Storms like this or what. Scientists have long warned about jeff brady from npr's climate team reports in bridgeport pennsylvania about one in the morning thursday vernon perry says the nearby river was rising and the fire department. Woke him up. They just were saying evacuate. Now get out the only chance you to go. Now get out run. There wasn't even time to move his car. Gushes water into the street. It's being pumped up from her basement. The water came up to the first floor here and first floor. My rug was soaking wet in. There has whether she expected such a severe storm because of climate change. Not at all. This is a complete surprise. We had no idea of the magnitude of the damage. That was going to be called even new york governor. Kathy hokuto who talks about climate change fueling. More severe storms was surprised. We did not know that between eight fifty nine fifty pm that the heavens literally open up and bring niagara falls level water to the streets of new york. It's one thing to talk about the effects of climate change. It's another to experience them. Says burnet. woods blackie chief meteorologist with climate centro even. If you said to her there was going to be over three inches of rain in one hour if she's never seen that what does that mean. What does that look like. What does that look like on the ground. Same for the rest of us but we're getting more examples. There was superstorm. Sandy new york and new jersey nine years ago. The pacific northwest now understands what days of one hundred plus degree weather is like and across the country more people are experiencing wildfires and hazardous smoke.

"We're going to cover it all this morning beginning at the white house senior adviser cedric richmond richmond. Thank you for joining us this morning. Let's begin with the devastation. Left by i'd i know you're coming to us from new orleans this morning. You were with president biden on friday. What's the latest on the situation down in your state and what kind of federal emergency assistance will president biden be authorizing. Well we have all hands on deck down here. We issued a priest storm disaster declaration and then in the middle of the night after the storm hit. The president signed a disaster declaration so that freed up individual assistance for families and individuals and we still encourage people to go to disaster assistance dot gov and apply for benefits and especially those critical needs assistance. So that we can get money in the hands of people To do it and one of the reasons why the president wanted to come down and come down so early because he wanted to see things on the ground and we know what the problems on. we're actually Helping to resolve them and that is getting power back on in homes. That's getting gas too. Few stations desk getting tarps out there. So people can start to mitigate their damage. and then it's to to create and provide that assistant so people that do come home after a week of not having electricity to have to replenish refrigerator. And you know most people. Don't think of it in that sense but part of why we're here is we want to know what real people deal with. And that's a four hundred dollar expense. A five hundred dollar expense to replenish a refrigerator. So we wanna make sure that's just a small example of what we're doing but we wanna make sure we're meeting. The needs of people encounter them and let them know. We're going to be here for the long haul

She leveled up and grab just enough of his jersey to flip him over the railing. And back into the stands. US: Drought in the West Is Causing a Domino Effect

"Domino effect from the drought in the West, and it's probably going to affect all of us eventually. Let's bring in Jim Root from Los Angeles. Jim Michael. I'm talking with a group of Western governors President Joe Biden acknowledged Extreme heat prolonged drought. Supercharged wildfire conditions are affecting the country. In many ways is not just about a water shortage, which is severe enough. Almost half of California is now in what's termed as exceptional drought. That's the U. S. Drought monitor is driest level. The exceptional drought covers 47% of California, up from just a third of the state. Only a week ago, 100% of California is in some level of drought. And has been for several weeks now. The domino effect of that well. Fields are left follow. Fortunes removed. Fish relocated recreational activities curtailed poor air quality, along with widespread water shortages and extreme wildfires, But another domino that has fallen affects large animals. California rescue groups and sanctuaries are reporting an unprecedented spike in calls for help from desperate owners of large animals. The severe drought has left them with no water or grazing grasses for their cows, goats, horses and sheep. There are reports of big increases of cattle being herded onto other people's property and hard hit Northern California. Many can't afford the soaring cost of hay or the price to hire a veterinarian for that matter to euthanize and haul away animals. Most livestock auctions were shut down by the pandemics of selling. It's not an option either. All of this could and will likely result in higher dairy and meat prices across the nation. And then there are the wildfires. And it's not just about the historic acreage burned in more than a dozen states and the poor air quality over Western skies, But As the president notes smoke for many of these fires burning in the west and along the Canadian border. Is affecting air quality of states across the country last

Are Aldi Own Brand Goods as Good as the Real Thing?

"To jump in. We are going to start with some of the hot food so they don't get chilly before we try them. First up we have earth grown vegan meat free chicken less patties. So this is all d.'s. Earth grown brand. Which i believe is an brand yes And that is their answer to like the boca. Fried chicken patty. So it's like a chicken list chicken. Patty and i made mine in the air. Fryer where did you make yours. I just put it in a frying pan nice and it was a frying pan that we bought on prime day. We bought like the pots and pans. Set and part of that sentiment. That you you had her in the episode on amazon and it comes with this little tiny like like tiny teeny tiny pan that you can put little burgers on or make little little eggs. It's the coolest thing we should put that whole set on the food cast page. It's a great so let's do it. I'm just chewing up a storm here. i have to say i pulled the patty apart and it looks like shredded chicken inside like i really really like this and what i like. Best about it. The texture is spot on to me. It tastes like chicken a lot of times when you do a chicken nugget or a chicken patty begin. It tastes like stuffing it just slinging bread but this tastes like chicken. It does and i feel like the outside it's really crispy and like it tastes like fried chicken it doesn't taste For the stats at tastes super. Decadent it season nicely. What are the stats. So each patty which is a nice size. One hundred and forty calories five grams of fat nine grams of protein. Three smart points excellent. I would totally eat. Same mike. Add those to the rotation earth grown. Okay next up. We have another all brand. I don't know who this mama cozy is but like every single thing in all the is made by her mama. Cozy makes tons of pizza. This is a cauliflower crust. Margarita pizza that you find in the freezer section so a lot of pizzas are the fridge. Some of our pizzas are in the freezer. This is a big frozen pizza. It looks thin crusted. I kind of burnt my slice lisa. Look at this adorable. Tiny slice might cut for me. That's so cute a little adorable minds. Burnt mine's not crispy is yours a little bit. Yeah i it's been sitting for a little bit. So they're lost crispiness is like the the non saas part. I think the sauce is good. Toil and Trouble: Women Were the OG Beer Brewers

"Though today's beer industry is a male dominated field. Beer was originally brewed by women in ancient babylon women. Not only made the beloved beverage but they sold it as well. It wasn't until beer's introduction into ancient egypt when men eventually took over the train. Meanwhile in europe women run taverns in breweries flourished brewster's produced a drink called ale which lacked the hops found in today's beer. In fact it was a german nun named hildegard who suggested hops as an ingredient at all. Thanks to its healing. Bettering and preserving properties sometime in the twelfth century yet despite an increasingly male presence in the beer trade over the years women still dominated during the middle ages neighbor called ale wives and they sold their goods in crowded markets which were packed to the brim with thirsty customers. So in order to stand out among the crowds the all wise don special clothing namely tall pointy hats. These hats were tall enough to be seen by anyone even from several yards away and of course they had to have beer to sell which meant hauling it from the brewing location to the markets but rather than stock individual bottles alewife transported their beer in large cauldrons which allowed them to carry a lot more at one time and those who sold beer out of their homes hung brooms above their front doors to indicate that they were open for business. Oh and one. Last detail vermin was also a major concern for brewers as mice and other rodents would nibble on the grain used for brewing combat that threat ale wives employed the use of cats to chase them away. Unfortunately these women owned businesses didn't last forever patriarchal society wouldn't let them and has the reformation spread across europe. Female brewers became the perfect scapegoats christianity which labeled them as witches.

You can keep your fly Rod to Lynn Act, because you've got enough room back there, you can sleep in the back. I've seen some people that used them, and then went to like a thrift store and got like an old hide bed turn at the back. You know, and all of a sudden you gotTa, you have a budget camper van. Totally, it is absolute budget camper van, and you know another thing people like is on on the hall road, you're doing a ten day trip the. You don't WanNa be deterred from harvesting an animal on day one, you gotta figure how to handle your meat for the duration of the trip. It's nice to have something. You can put it in that keeps bears out of it. While you might be in there getting the rest of your animals or something. I've got all kinds of ideas. If this, what you want to talk about, I mean, clear your schedule, let's go nuts. Part part one is dialect and. The Norwegian would. Serial killers. Are Two is the hall road. So okay. So you there's a couple places that will rigid car. How pricier? Because like renting a car from Hertzel, those guys during busy season. Hundred and fifty bucks a day. Yeah. I don't know, let's say one hundred to two hundred bucks a day. But. Here's the benefit is. If, you do a fly in hunt, you're locked in it. Starting point for any hunting, Alaska. got. Bargain. Would be twenty, five, hundred bucks a person who probably three to thirty, five, hundred bucks a person a person. Now when you rent a car and he split between as many people that are coming. Your you rent that trump for less than what one person would rent to to to fly in. So. It's still a budget way to do it like whatever it is. That's what it is. "But. I will put it in the context of the month and be like okay, this promoter has this. We have this live band. We have this DJ after that, how does this fit together? What's driving? What is not? How do we re appropriate that it's all a big puzzle? Right. And so to get back to like the whole collaborative spirit of it like it is a big collaboration. But ultimately, when you're curated, something there needs to be a final say, right? And the final say to. From my perspective, always belongs to the person who has the most skin in that game now. Right. That's the DJ who's put the lifetime of effort into that set. Right. The it's the music producer who's put the lifetime of a motion into that song. So that's what it boils down to. It's like just pick the right stuff for the right job don't bullshit. Don't get out of your depth. Don't get out of your area of expertise. And but if they work with right in and share information that's going to help them so that they're encouraged to share the information can help you one. Another interesting thing, I'm thinking about now is how much DC and the music scene here has changed since you hall opened incredibly so right now a you're not the new fresh exciting venue anymore. And there's several competing quote unquote venues. Right. Who do not the same thing, but similar events that maybe would draw the same crowd that would come here that maybe didn't exist when you started. Yeah. Do do you find competition energizing do you find it? Do you even think of it as competition? I try not to compete with anybody at U haul people compete with us. Yeah. And one yet to be fair. We should say too. I mean you hall one of the best clubs in the nation. I'm not just saying that because I'm your friend. I mean, that's what Rolling Stone said that. And I mean, I think it's been acknowledged at this point Guys fortunate fortunate to. to. Yeah. I think a lot of that was timing and degree of execution, and all the rest of that. But yeah, there's, there's a lot more places here. And I try not to look at it as competition the way that we do our stuff is focusing on what we do best. And that's always the way to success period. It's when you try to focus on something that you shouldn't be doing more that is not the suited for you. We'll get in the weeds. It's simple as that. And or if you get insecure like say new club opens up and you see they're doing well doing something that you don't do. And you think, oh, maybe I should do what they're doing that to me. I mean you see it with deejays producers to write you that you have no integrity, right? Stick to your guns, like, and so we thought long and hard about who we wanted to be I thought long and hard about who I wanted to be, and I decided a long time ago. And so that's made it easier to. Stay the course in certain programmatic angles. Right. And so, yeah, I feel like we really helped encourage a lot of people in DC to enter this fear, because they saw that it could be done. And I'm very proud and happy about that. So I think we have a great scene in the community in DC, and some of those clubs and promoters have done a really good job of doing something that wasn't already there, something that we don't do here and others have. Right. And it's just like to me, it's like you're not gonna get it until you get it. Right. Right. So it's just like anything else, whether it's producing or -ing it's, it's, it's like surfing. There's no there's no rules to it. But there are also a lot of things you can't do if you wanna do it successfully. So just figure it out and see. Yeah. We, we, we have stayed true to the primary, in my opinion, the primary. Principles of U-Haul that was set forth when we open one is that it is democratic and open for everyone and that goes for music cramming as well. It is a music hall. It is not a nightclub. We do not only have deejays and is funny, because we got known as a DJ club and people talked about it as a DJ club..

"And then investigative though like the hidden camera was an adrenaline rush. Really? Right. Yeah. Because you're always afraid that you're gonna get caught a little bit. You wanna make sure that you have the camera angles the equipment we were using back. Then as I said was a little unwieldy. You know, now, I love doing profiles on people because I find people so fascinating a little bit different though. Because you dig long for the personality versus trying to pin them as a bad guy. Catch the rat. So to speak. That's totally different spin. Yeah. When I was doing investigative stuff. I really wanted to change the world. I thought that we were writing wrongs, and this is going to be a great thing. And how old were you? Then where young enough to still be an idealist? I was in my twenties. Yeah. Beginning third. Yeah. It was good. And you didn't think any of that changed the world? I know you did some investigative reporting on U-Haul pizza. King scam artists real exposes you don't feel like by turning those people into the public Liden, exposing them that you really made a difference. Well, I hope so what do you really think? So you hall was renting equipment that they weren't really inspecting properly, and there were some horrific accidents. And that's when we started to look into, you know, working with a team of producers at this point, we would rent a lot of vehicles in different states. And then we would bring them to inspectors that we had set up in advance. And they would take a look at it. And the brakes were bad on some of them. There was no gas cap on another one. So I did it inside edition, and when I went to ABC after that they said we really liked that investigation. Could you redo it? I'm thinking I'm hoping that they've made it better. So I think we included trailers earned the crime. What are you still yet? No improvement. Not really. And then one of the people that worked on the project with me three weeks after it aired rented a u haul and got stuck on the side of the road. I got. No, no. It wasn't that horrific. But I say probably pay attention. I don't blame you whole. I would have given them the bummer. So hopefully, I don't remember seeing them in the headlines as much since then. So I do think that they've probably taken a target, and I'm sure that the older equipment has been moved off. And they're hopefully have newer equipment. And what was the skinny with pizza king? What were they doing? Just remember them as scam artists in anyway, the guy who ran it was a complete scam artist. So he had these vending machines that were supposed to spit out pizzas. And they didn't really work that. Well, I think they were frozen and the pizzas were moldy and people would buy into this idea. Oh by a vending machine. Yeah. And it wouldn't work. And then I don't remember exactly he wasn't paying them properly or he wouldn't take the equipment back. My husband. And I at the time we were both just working together. We were down in Florida, and we were staking out one of the places. I think were the vending machines were supposed to be held. And I think we were trying to locate the head of the. Company because nobody could find him at that point. So we're sitting in a car, and we were watching this place for hours and this security guard comes over and knocks on the window with a gun polled. Oh, my and those kind of terrifying moment, I said, yes, I think you guys need to leave. I would have had that to you. Hold to have the car cleaned right away. Let's go over you hall. "Knife in holding it parallel to the cooling rack that. The thing is sitting on slice the cake that way, right? That is that was Dougie's answer. You U-Haul says you're gonna make you cut parallel to the one kid's going to get the top half of of the of the brownie and the other kids going gonna get the bottom out. I don't like that solution because the top have on the bottom half, a not equal in terms, and they may be equal in area. But they may not be equal in terms of delectable. Well, here's the other solution that a be better. If you take a rectangle, how would you find the center of a rectangle you withdraw the diagonals? A you would find the center that's easy. Okay. And you will admit that either one of those diagonals cuts the rectangle in half. Sure. But what you don't know. Probably is that any line drawn through the centre. That's not a diagonal also cuts the rectangle in half. Sure except that or accept up to accept that any line drawn through the center of the whole that is a rectangle will divide that in half. Sure, I'll buy that too. So if you were to draw a line through the center of the big rectangle and went through the center of the whole, then you would cut the thing in exactly two pieces. All equal. So what I want to do is find the center of the little rectangle that are Osborne cut out. Right. Like and do that by making to Dag and all the way, they get the sectors the center of that little exactly right, then I can draw today. For the big piece of the brownie. And it makes no difference. Now where in fact, the other rectangle is if you connect the two centers with a straight launch straight line continuing cut. Well, straight lines go on forever. Yeah. You will have cut the thing in half. I think. No, that's good. Who's our winner? I wonder if this week is Christopher Kroll from Westfield, Massachusetts and having his answer. Selected from the dumpster. Full of correct is that we got Chris is.
