"When I'm around those guys, you see, man, those guys put in a tremendous amount of work. They're working 18 hours a day and they're getting fired. They're moving from here to there. There's no stability. And then you see Tommy Heinsohn, who's been there forever. So I started doing small things for at the time. It was Comcast. Now it's NBC sports and I started doing like small things for them and just trying to stay on their radar. And I remember when I lost when we lost in. I was playing for the Chicago Bulls, and if we would have won the series I would have played for we would have played the Boston Celtics in the second round. Well, Derrick Rose gets her. We lose that series to Philadelphia. I make one text message, and I said, Hey, I was wondering if I can do some some, uh Media work for you guys during this series. I really know this team well, and I know your team. Really? Well, good for me to get out there and try some stuff and man, I went to do my exit meeting with the Chicago Bulls and these guys hit me up like time I got my phone back. It was 35 40 text messages Get over here. How do we get you a flight and everything, and I had opportunities after that to go play overseas and do everything like that. But like you mentioned these jobs don't come around very often. I just want to take advantage of that. And it was kind of like became my plan since 708 to take over for Tommy Heinsohn whenever he decided to step down or whatever, great so That was my plan, and, uh, you know, I did all the right things, but I was also very fortunate and timing and life is every that's a part of it, And there's no question that's a part of it. There's no question about that. So how weird is it? How weird is it for you though, to not be playing and just to be watching NBA basketball? Um I would imagine, you know, you watched a lot of basketball growing up in your playing days. You're you're breaking down film. But how is it like Because you're not. Obviously you're not the first and you're not the last to make that transition. But how is that? Like been for you and I and I know you talked about your competitive nature and the Big three, which gives you that, But when you're watching a lot of basketball would imagine you're itching to get out there and plays well, or am I wrong? For the first year all I wanted to do with play, and I remember Tyronn Lue was the assistant coach, and he still hoped all the time And we would have these like Marathon three on three games. That really two hours that's honestly was unbelievable. And the whole we have seven game series and they would just be grueling, like spice to break out and stuff like that. So I was the broadcaster. He was the coach that we would play every day and hold on. Stop. Hold on, Let me stop you there. So Tyronn Lue's team comes to town. He's coaching Your broadcast was he was a coach on the Celtics. Okay, so he comes to town and you guys are having what do you do? Do you go to like a Celtics practice and you get a couple guys that are on the team? How does that come about? Like just Tron. Luke, come up to you and say, Hey, you know, I want to. I want to ball with you guys. Let's get some games going like, How does that come about? I'm just curious. Yeah, So you got to remember he was so he's the assistant coach on the Celtics. Right shoot around. It would get like two or three coaches and get like a couple of players that we're playing. Very, very many minutes and shoot around all the buses will leave and we'd be at the that's awesome Rockets facility. And we would just hope for, like two hours. I love song games like emotionally spit. And so that happened the first year and I remember like those guys really dark, still playing in the NBA. That's obviously not like a rotational player or anything like that. But like it. If you needed me for a game here and there, you can count on me. But then for the following year I go and coach Golden State warriors. I'm on Mark Jackson's staff and, you know, early on they need. They need bodies. So I'm playing with Steph Curry, Draymond green. David Lee Thompson. All those guys right? I'm dumb Harrison Barnes. I'm working those guys out and playing those games. But here's what happened. I play on Monday. I'm good. I play on Tuesday. I'm a little bit off. But those guys are playing Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and by Wednesday, Michael, You could feel like my body. I wasn't recovering my Thursday I could barely move on Friday like I was I was shot. Okay. Clearly, I probably couldn't even made a free throw like my body was just starting to shut down because those guys were getting stronger and I was like going downhill. And I say that, you know, probably people in l A or probably wait a minute. You know we want LeBron or we won't know why. Or point, Georgia, you know? Steph Curry that group, but I just I just think it gives you a kind of a fresh outlook as far as two teams that have played a pretty high level all year. Um, this Phoenix team, um, is the favorite as they probably should be. Just because of the you know, with the honest injury here, but Um, you know, second best record in the Western Conference. It's been a long rebuild, as you know, from where this team was when you know Devin was drafted in 2015 to kind of Chris Paul trade in the offseason, certainly with Monty Williams as her head coach, but it's going to be I mean, you've got to to high level guards with certainly with Chris and then you've got you holiday in Milwaukee and all NBA level defender Has played exceptionally well, since you know during these playoffs, certainly with the honest out, Chris Middleton is a you know, you know, a closer you know, certainly an all Star. Um, Dave played since the honest has been out, you know, you know, they played out at a high level to finish off, you know, to finish off Atlanta here, and I'm expecting a I'm expecting a good series. I think we might go traditional like old days. Digs where we've got DeAndre in Brook Lopez. You know, I know Brooklyn kind of stretch out to the pain. I mean to the you know. The three point line, but I'm kind of too big that are going to be more post up threats here and he is this could be this could be a really good one. You mentioned it a little bit. These are times where things involve where things change where things move forward. And are we at that point in the NBA and you better get used to it. The Phoenix Suns. It's been 50 years. Or the box has been 50 years. The sons they haven't been to a final since 1993 is this Is this how the league is moving now, and we got to be okay with it because the stars are are starting to fade. Yeah. I mean, I think you know certainly was with both teams. I mean, these teams are built for sustainable success. It's not like this is going to be a one and done and then you know, we're not going to see them for another four or five years. I don't think so. I mean I think what has shown Ryan is that this league is in good hands with a lot of these younger players, you know, with certainty in Phoenix with with Booker and McKell, Bridges, DeAndre and we've seen it during the playoffs with Luca in Dallas. We'll see if Zayn get this New Orleans team into the playoffs next year here, But the league is in great hands and eventually LeBron James of the world and Steph Curry's Those guys, you know they do age and the next line of guys. To kind of step in is what we're going to see over the next over the next two weeks here, so From a rating standpoint. Yeah, I mean, certainly you want sometimes bigger market teams, But, um, From a legal standpoint, this is the ability to showcase. You know, teams that are a little bit of a mid mid market and I think it's I think it's good that you have a team like Milwaukee. That's in a mid market here that it shows you that if you draft well, um certainly with the honest where they selected him the holiday trade in the off season. And then you kind of just add veterans around him with Lopez P. J. Tucker trade in this past March. That you can build it that way, and that you don't have to go out and try to attract high level um all stars as free agents. And then I think it also shines a light on how well the coaching has been. I mean, Nate McMillan. Taking over a team midyear, taking them to the playoffs and taken into the Eastern Conference finals. You know, Mike Budenholzer, you know, not able to get it done in Atlanta in the eyes of people to go to Milwaukee. And do what he's done. Tyronn Lue with the L, A Clippers losing their best player, and then, of course, Mo Williams in Phoenix. I think this is just really showcased the great coaching at the very top as well, Not only the great play But the coaching has been significantly good..

"Uh, DeMarcus cousins last night, Marcus Morris last night. They figured out ways to contribute because they had to And also a level of credit has to go to Tyronn Lue. And I heard Paul George mentioned something after the game. That seems Obvious. But Don't think that every coach and maybe Doc rivers. Doesn't have This, uh, doesn't have this level of awareness. Or has the ability to do this? I mean me that that's why we saw Philadelphia failed just like the Clippers team he led last year failed. But what Paul George said after the game. Was Tyronn Lue. Doesn't even bring up the magnitude of the game. Because he understands And he has experience right coming back from 31 down and you can give credit to LeBron all you want, And I think that LeBron deserves The lion's share of the credit when you have the best player in the league That certainly helps, but having gone through it in Cleveland, He learned some things. And with this Clippers team, he's not in the locker room, saying this is the biggest game of the season, saying, this is your season saying if you don't win this were done. You know, state? Why doesn't he say those things? Because these are grown men. These are grown men that know how to do simple math. First 1 to 4 winds were down 31. I think we need to win tonight. So it doesn't have to be brought up. And in fact, if you bring it up Then you're going to be Creating more pressure. On the guys because they're listening before they go out onto the court. How they are facing the abyss. They don't need to be told that they know that And again, it seems like such an obvious thing, But there are coaches who don't do that who pile on the pressure. Maybe it's because they feel like if they don't say anything, then they're not doing their job. I don't know what the reasons are. But Tyronn Lue with the perspective he has Being in the position that the Clippers are now. And have been routinely down 20 in these playoffs, just saying you know what they understand it. They don't need me to tell them. And I keep hearing the word desperation. That the Clippers play desperate last night. Don't know that they did. I saw I saw a team that was loose. Saw a team that was moving the ball around that was getting everyone involved. I saw a team that was playing free. That didn't look like desperation. But one thing's for sure. Phoenix did not match whatever that was last night desperation. Uh, execution. Relaxing whatever it was, in fact, the Phoenix Suns may have been too relaxed. To go in a 22 5 hole. They didn't match the Clippers. Whatever you want to label the way they came out last night as The Sun's didn't match it. And now as the series goes on, The Phoenix Suns, who many of them have not been in this position before, and even their veteran leader. Who has meant so much to this team, Chris Paul Even he Has not been able to break through this round. So, yes, Chris Paul is a veteran. But he's never punched the ticket to the NBA Finals. Has he learned from prior mistakes? Absolutely. He has But I think If this goes to a game seven Phoenix is in trouble. I think that Phoenix can go into l A and when They've shown it before. Very recently. They can win Game six and finish this thing up. But if they don't If we see a carbon copy or close to it of the game we saw last night all of a sudden. Now it's the sons that are gripping. And Kim, Monty Williams push the right buttons to get this team. To play with purpose. And that's the way I would put it, not desperation purpose. And be able to alleviate some of the pressure that they're going to be facing. I do think that Phoenix still ends up winning this series because at the end of the day, they are a better team than the Clippers. But in sports, there are these these ancillary forces. That sometimes make the better team not come out on top. And the longer this series goes. The more of those forces come into play, and now the pressure shifts over to the Phoenix sun. And maybe it's already there to an extent, but I don't know I saw in the first five minutes a team that was pretty relaxed. It didn't seem like they were gripping at all. They just seemed like they were too casual last night. What a great team win by the Clippers and for local story. How great has the Reggie Jackson's story, Ben? Local kid. As Ben. You know, And in in Detroit, he was labeled as You know, overpaid. He has to go to L. A to prove himself. And he hasn't really done it and then quiet goes down, and he takes it upon himself and says, I'm going to be the guy to stand alongside Paul George and lead this team and he's been brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. And he is going to cash in. As Chris Paul said about DeAndre Ayton. He's going to get a bag. This summer. A in the league's Final four And that way, I think I think Adam Silver and the NBA and NBA media would look at that as a good thing. But the flip side of that is You've got teams that are getting this far. In the case of the Clippers, and if the Nets win tonight. And they're doing it. They're doing it by building super teams with player freedom of movement. With guys that decide that they don't like where they are. And even if it's not straight, unrestricted free agency, where they're wined and dined and recruited, like they're coming out of high school and going to college, where it's kind of recruiting all over again. Make it worth my while. Present me with something. Put it all on the table. It's not only that it's also guys that basically pile or sit out until they get traded.
