"And with a new system last year with hypo coming in and just bringing what bringing to him what he needed as a quarterback, some tempo utilizing his mobility and simplifying things on the perimeter with a match ups that they get. He is really thrived. And more than anything I'm convinced, it's just game experience and you see him grow in his leadership is development of understanding coverages and where to go with the football. So he's been one of the stars of college football this year and for NFL scouts when I'm calling those guys during the week when they're out on the road. He's one of the guys that keeps the name keeps popping up because he was a player coming in in the year. Maybe a fringe draft pick. And now he's climbing the ladder if you will, and that day three range and we know the top 5. We've got CJ Stroud from Ohio State. You got Bryce young from Alabama. You got will levis from Kentucky. Then you get to the kind of project guys in Tyler Van Dyke from Miami and Anthony Richardson from Florida who have not played well, but they have great upside. Right after that, I think hen and hooker is in the mix. I have them as the number 6 quarterback in this class. Let me go back, you mentioned levitt and I want to gang up on him because he's had better days than the one in Oxford, but what did you see there being there and does it change your view of him at all? I wouldn't say it changes my view. I mean, first of all, you have to understand, you're talking about a quarterback who dislocated his finger in his non throwing hand. Went over the sideline. I was standing ten yards away. They snapped it back in place, tape it up. He goes back in. Then he twists his ankle and they've got to tape that up and he goes back in. The guy is a battler. I mean, he really is. He's the ultimate competitor. He's very intelligent. He's got a big time arm. He has mobility. The two things that I see when evaluating him

"So I think Hartman's ability to navigate the pocket, get the shots off, is a big reason why this offense is so prolific, but you're not going to run this in the NFL. So how that projects forward, I have zero idea. I love that I asked someone about wake forest once. This was a couple of years ago before they right when they first started running this version of the offense and the guy said it was another college football coach and he said, you have to pay attention to what they're doing down there because this guy is either going to lose his job immediately or every team in the country is going to try to be copying what he's doing. Teams are starting to Stanford, David Charles Stanford came over, adopted this. It's really like you can not minor in this stuff. Yeah. Like you have got to major in what they do at wake forest. You either do it or you don't. He's cool though, he's got dare I say. Like a very and we got in trouble and I think we kind of over elevated someone's stock by doing this a couple of years ago, but there's like a very like on the place where he has to kind of scan and move laterally. There's like a little Aaron Rodgers in him. Like he's got a quick trigger. He moves, he moves well. I don't know. Something I like about Sam Hartman. It's curious, but the size thing is going to be concerned too. For sure. It's the size thing is going to be concerned. But he's good, man. He's a good player, and it's one of those things where it's like, I'm not saying you take this kid in the top 5, but like it's one of those things where I can see, you can all see very quickly how NFL offense NFL teams will fall in love with somebody like this if they're comfortable projecting that forward. Let's talk Tyler Van Dyke at Miami here. And I guess the first part of that question is what is going on at Miami in that they're losing games to middle Tennessee. And Van Dyke, a lot of hype coming into the year ends up getting benched during that game. I guess he is going to start again on Saturday. But what are we looking at? Red shirt sophomore, I mean, we could be talking about 2024 draft the way the season is going for him. Yeah, I think that Van Dyck has my thing with Van Dyke as I think his mind rights checks that his arms can't cash. I don't think his arm is really that great. I think some of his decision making is lacking. Obviously, like you said, he got benched against middle Tennessee two weeks ago. They play North Carolina on Saturday and it is a team that if you can't score on North Carolina, you're offense is a really, really rough. I mean, this North Carolina defense is about as bad as you will see. So the Detroit Lions of the ACC. Basically. They even wear similar colors, so it works. So I will be interested in Tyler Van Dyke over the back half of the season.

"He's more decisive, and it looks like he said, I haven't seen him live yet, but it looks like the ball has a little bit more juice to it. And so I love players like that who have kind of fought all the adversity, have overcome everything. Everyone says, well, if they could win, if it was a different quarterback, if anyone but stetson Bennett, and then he goes and proves everyone wrong. And then he comes back the next year. And he is playing even better. I love guys like that. We were getting ready for their opener against Oregon and you're still reading, they want in spite of stetson benefits with their fans were saying, you know, I think to Todd's point, he's definitely better. To me, it's hard to judge based on this limited sample because he is throwing a lot of these perimeter passes short intermediate passes. So guys who are wide open. And they're super talent. I mean, you and I could complete some of these throws. So yeah, I think when we get into SEC play, we'll find out. I want to Todd from next standpoint. Next level standpoint. It's going to be 25 years old, I believe. That's true. He still 5 11. Now there's been short quarterbacks. There's a shorter quarterback right now and I've learned over the years. You're either going to be the starter and get a chance in the first contract as a first round pick, maybe an early second round pick. Or we're now looking for great backups and maybe once in a while. Once every three or four years, someone who emerges as a late round pick, undrafted player at that quarterback position. But it's all really this year's class. I said it before. Bryce young, CJ strat will levis. Those are the clear cut top guys. You're drafting and giving them 25, 30, $35 million guaranteed in their first contract to be your starter. All these other guys were talking about, it's either potential. Anthony Richardson, Tyler Van Dyke, or can they be great backups for us that maybe one or two of these guys develop into a good starter. Because there's no question you talk to him. He's a leadership guy, rah rah guy, players rally around him. I wondered at the beginning of the year, you know, thinking of Georgia, Jake fromm. A lot of people that Jake from, was going to be a good pro, and then he just didn't, as you know, better than anybody. He's got to have enough zip. The windows get a lot smaller. When stetson Ben gets the NFL, mcintosh and Bowers aren't running free all over the place. The windows are tight. There's very little separation. So I think the question to me that he needed to answer is the arm strength part of it. And I agree with you. I think he has a little bit more on the ball than we've seen in the past. Before you go, because I have a huge Kim tomorrow at Arkansas. The player Bryce young this year, how would you evaluate it? I think it's been great. I really do. We talked about it last time on his own with you. They do not have the perimeter speed. You talk about Henry ruggs, Jerry Judy. Devonta Smith. Jalen waddle. Does that matter? What's the NFL? It's not the same on the outside as an evaluator. You love this. Okay, what are you going to do now, Bryce? Okay. Can you carry this team in so far, he's been great, but there's going to be some moments where they have to overcome that. And it's going to be interesting to see what Nick Saban and what that coaching staff are able to do when they try to game plan because they don't have the same matchup pieces that they've had the last, what, 5 years now? Yeah, I mean, you can go as far back as you want, really. At my question on that, you said earlier, I think it probably jumped out to people that some NFL people you've talked to have levis ahead of Bryce young right now. Guy was magnificent last year one of the Heisman Trophy. And Bryce young is special. Is it size? It is. And everyone said, well, you know, you look at some of the smaller quarterbacks in the league, but they're all kind of thicker and he's lean and shorter. He's small. Relative to most Russell Wilson was 5 5 ten and change, but he was big and he's big and thick and here's 214 pounds. 5 11. A scout I talked to said they had him between 5, ten, 5, 11, and at a 186 pounds. He weighed in that day. This summer. He comes in the two of us, but I also want to make that is a great player. I mean, I don't want anybody to think he's a fantastic player. Take someone who's unique and special to overcome those things. I think he's those things. I really believe that. Yeah. From the very first game. We had their game in a Chick-fil-A in Atlanta, the opener last year against Miami and the very first drive wing wing right down the field against Miami team that started the year last year. Stop me if you've heard this before. With a lot of hype. And the hype lasted about two Bryce young possessions marching up and down the field. So he's got all of it. And I don't think that'll hold him back at all. I could do that. I feel like we're going to make this a weekly segment. We're at a bar in your neighborhood. Yeah, we have the same neighborhood. Yeah. The great calm and wealth of Massachusetts. I might have trouble getting in with the southern drawl, but you guys could welcome great to see you. Great to see you. This was fun. It's thoroughly enjoyable. And I'm sure I say that after every guest, but sometimes I fail to, but I mean it here. We're all talking about subjects we love. There you go. No better. Sean Todd, we are back. And we have another one on deck. Jordan

"You know, they recognize it. He has made huge strides and the talents there. So I'm excited to see him now in this big stage opportunity and a huge SEC game. Does he take that next step? You know, that was another takeaway from the meeting. You know, he's clearly the starting quarterback now as the folks here know there was some question if he was for the first couple of weeks that that's gone. And you think about everything he's been through. You know, move to a completely different part of the country, learn a completely different style of offense. He's never played in the RPO offense before. He's out of the air raid. So he had to learn all of this all the new teammates. And different hunting here too. Different hunting. He's a hundred fisherman. I think though and Todd would agree with me on this. I'm sure the biggest takeaway of the meeting with Jackson dart is he has a brother named diesel. And that's his actual name. Nickname. It's mad at his parents. Yeah, he's mad that he's not diesel because he was older and they named him Jackson and then the younger brother diesel. Can't get this stuff anywhere, you know? I wasted all our good stuff today. Don't worry, our audience isn't that big. Oh, yes it is. Every time I'm on this show, I just have a lot of people tell me I saw you on there with Paul. I want to go back to and you know me. I'm always looking for some gossip, but so you're talking to a coach and you know it's going to be a bad day when they say, if we have a perfect game, we think we can maybe keep it a two or three score game. I don't know if they ever say that, but a lot of times you get the list. We've got our hands full. Yeah. Yeah. We're going to have to do this this and all candor. And it wasn't set off the records. Our conversations with the South Carolina people, a couple of weeks ago and they played Georgia. And they were realists. But you feel good about that, because beamers. And you also appreciate the candor because we watched the tapes and we like to think we know a little going into it. I certainly lean heavily on both Todd's for their football sense of it when we go in. You know, what you do is an uphill challenge. Does anybody ever kill off the record? We have no chance. I'm not sure ever those exact words, but a lot of times it comes about as close to that as it can be. In other words, you've got Paul Chris once told me right before a game. No, the day before game and walk through is that we just, you know, look at all the 5 stars. I have no idea. I mean, he was pulling my chain, but he was like, you know, I don't know what we can do to win this game. And then they went out and beat LLC the next day. Todd, I mean, you're looking at a lot of things. But Sean's saying things that are okay for public air. How forthcoming are these guys with you about prospects and about ability and things that really matter to someone who's doing a valuations like you? Much more forthcoming when it's January, February, march. And that's when they'll really tell you. And it's also there's right now with so many juniors coming out and underclassmen coming out. They don't want to talk about prospects in that regard. They want the focus to be on the season. I want the focus to be on the season. And then I can dive into all the other character things and some just how they work and those sorts of issues. But that's what I thought it was interesting because kiffin came here and he said, I was a minute late, I was at a collective press conference. And you're like going, this is a guy that doesn't need to be at a collective press conference the day before the biggest game so far this year. But you need to because L is a huge part of the future. The interesting part about your last question, Paul. And I've been with Todd when this has happened where we've walked away from a meeting. And Todd felt the coach was kind of almost underselling the player because he doesn't want him. Todd mcshay says, well, if he goes, he's definitely a first round picker second round pick. The kid knows his credibility. He's probably going to go where the coach, you know, a lot of times, well, I really think if he stayed another year, he'd really benefit from the experience. Sometimes that's actually true. But a lot of times it's just, I want my guy to stay. Sean McDonough and Todd mcshay, I know you have to evaluate, but can you divorce all the noise? Because no matter what you say about a player, it becomes an explosion on social media. And then they'll throw it up against you. You gave me a really honest answer a couple weeks ago. I asked you about Van Dyck. In Miami, and you were cool. But I'm only going to talk to God. I was supposed to be a first round because everybody has said everybody. It's the first round pick at some point. But you gave a very honest objective response. I feel like it's my job to make sure that I'm giving the honest answers and not trying to sell somebody because it's not fair to the young man. It's not fair to the process. So I mean, Anthony Richardson coming into the year. Everyone was talking about if he has a great season. He could be a top 15 pick, right? And he hasn't had a great season. He struggled. He had that first great game against Utah. And the hype train started. And everyone was going to be a top ten pick. And maybe he's the first overall pick. He's that talented. But you've got to look at. I mean, he completed 33 passes coming into the season. He had started two games. You've got to play the game in Tyler Van Dyke played a lot last year, but it was in a different system, and now he's adjusting the system. So their first round talents. But I feel like it's my responsibility to make sure people understand, just because you have the talent doesn't mean you're ready. We'll levis is ready because he has the talent and he's mature enough and he's played a lot of ball. Let me ask you about another quarterback who's in the conversation all the time about everything. And there's still doubters. Stetson Bennett. He's I've talked to a scout this week who actually said, you know what? Coming into the year based off of last year's tape, 7th round, free agent, just, you know, I love the way he plays. And I love all that. And he said, watching this first few weeks and I know he has so much more talent around him than the opponent, but he's playing different. He's bigger, he's stronger. He's more aggressive. He's more decisive, and it looks like he said, I haven't seen him live yet, but it looks like the ball has a little bit more juice to it. And so I love players like that who have kind of fought

"So I think when you're Alabama and you go on the road, you get everyone's best shot. And it's tough to be the hunted, but Alabama, more often than not, the talent gap has been so significant that it hasn't mattered, even if they played their sea game, they would still come out and win the game comfortably. Now if they play their C game, teams could get them. And it's not that bam has gotten worse. I just think other teams have gotten better. And it just going to force Alabama to play a little bit more consistently throughout the course of their schedule, especially when they go on the road to insanely hostile environment. So I think that's why you go to Alabama. You welcome that challenge. And now it's up to the players to rise to that challenge when it's presented to them again. Greg, let me flip over to a and M and I know what they're doing from a recruiting standpoint, but what have you seen that would lead you to believe that Jimbo Fisher is going to get it right at the quarterback position and offensively because we keep seeing some of the same problems. Yeah, the quarterback position is an issue. I don't really know, I would love to try to put some silver lining on it, but at this point it's a little bit of an issue. We've now seen Haynes king in three games in which he's played all 60 minutes. All three against substandard competition. Now disrespect to app state, but they're not at the same level as some of the teams that Haynes king will see a little later in the schedule, so you see three group of 5 opponents. He has 5 interceptions and two fumbles and three and a 180 minutes of gameplay. That's just not good enough. It's not all on him though. We've been told all off season just how gifted Devon a chain is and now he's going to be the next best thing. Sure, he's got great track star speed and had a great kick return, had to touch down run, made some unbelievable plays in the game, but he also was destroyed in past protection and he's not a very physical runner. So he's not going to grind out the tough yardage like you were able to get the last couple of years with Isaiah spiller. He's not able to deliver the body blows the same way that some of the facts that they've had in the past could deliver them. So I think they're at a little bit of an identity crisis. It doesn't mean they can't get things solved, but I think they're going to need to be a little more creative. And I also think too, they're going to need to issue a challenge to every single player on that offensive side of the football. Every single guy's job needs to be up for grabs. After the performance last week, the inability to sustain drives, the inability to churn out tough yardage, the inability to get in any sense of rhythm whatsoever. They have a lot of soul searching to do after last week's performance. You could chalk it up, hey, were they looking ahead to Miami? Fine. But if you sleep on app state, that's on you. But we've all seen what app states done in college football in the last 15 years. That should have come as no surprise that that team was going to be ready to play. I thought ab state, I thought a and M's defense hung in there, but man, at some point, when you're on the field for 42 minutes, you're going to give up some runs late. So I felt bad for a and M's defense. I think it false falls squarely on the offense and they got to find something and find something quickly because it will not be it will not be an easy task to get the win this weekend against the quality my NE team that can score some points. Yeah, let me go there because what you know about Miami and we haven't had a great sample of them. But we have had a decent sample of a and M. Where is this game one or lost? Well, I think it ultimately, a and M can keep a clean sheet, which they've had a difficult time doing. I mean, they've kind of been a little bit of a mess as far as turnovers are concerned and just sloppy play. If they can keep a clean sheet and avoid negative plays and stay on schedule and all these other things, they'll be fine. But ultimately, that hasn't been the case for them. Defensively, I think they're going to be going against the best quarterback they've played so far. That should come as no surprise Tyler Van Dyke is the real deal. He's excellent as far as extending plays. He has good mobility and can create on his own. And he will put pressure on this a and M defense down the field. More so than chase Bryce did and more so than anything they saw in week one as well. So the defense will be challenged in a lot more ways this weekend because of the capability that Miami has on the perimeter with their skill and a quarterback. So I think this will be by far their biggest challenge and they can certainly raise their level just like they did last year. Paul, the problems with a and M have not been in big games. The problems are in games in which they should win convincingly. They seem to raise and lower their level to the opponent. And that to me is not the sign of an incredibly healthy culture. You play to your standard regardless of who the opponent is. That's a healthy culture. And we have not seen that all the time from AMM throughout the course of the last few seasons. Yeah, and on that last year, they had their moments, but after I think it was after the Arkansas law, they struggled against Mississippi state before the Alabama game. They struggled late a lot of reasons that happened. This is, we think about our team, but Jimbo was asked about this earlier yesterday about being the offensive play caller. I know that's easy to blame him, but he's a head coach and he's also known for his offensive prowess. So do you think that this is too much for him? Well, let's just get back to last year for a second, Paul. I mean, a lot of us chalked it up. Well, they lost their quarterback. You have your quarterback go down in week two. It's gonna be hard to manufacture offense. Well, now the quarterback that went down in week two last year is healthy in the offense hasn't gotten better if anything, it's kind of regressed. So you help me understand this. I mean, I know they're mixing in some new players. I know they have some new players along the front. I know they have some new players at wide receiver. I know Devon a chain's taken on a new role as the lead back. I know that the guys are doing different things, but last year there was a baked in excuse and saying, hey, you know, we lost our guy. You know, calzada is up and down. We're having a tough time with him. We all know where he is on the auburn depth chart right now. So they were able to get by last year by saying, hey, we lost our quarterback. We're doing the best we can with the guy we got. Well, now you got your starter and who won a good solid quarterback competition against a guy that's won in this league before and max Johnson, so there really is no excuse now. I mean, it's really about execution. And I don't think it's too much for Jimbo. He's done it this whole life. I also don't think he's going to give up play calling duties. But I also think too, if he were to give a play call in dudes, is that really going to make a difference?

"Brad, are you there? Oh, we lost Brad. All right, let's go to will in North Carolina will. What's up? Alyssa. How's it going? What's on your mind? I just wanted to say, I'm kind of like Jay if I had my in my crosshairs because I think he was a little moody, Friday afternoon. And he was bashing the North Carolina school systems saying that we can't get anybody to come watch the games. And I'm going to Appalachian state and warm. So if you could take a note and ask him what he thinks about the Appalachian, the Appalachian primarily now in North Carolina school systems and I was going to give your thoughts, I think gang days coming to on Saturday to the Appalachian game. So stock up for the North Carolina school systems which Paul walks to convey a bash even that he lives in North Carolina. So and please, please don't take any calls from Matt from Matt from Texas today. Go mountaineer, see you. I love it, will. Thank you for the call. I will say no bashing North Carolina school systems for me 'cause I grew up in the North Carolina school systems here in Charlotte. I actually applied to Appalachian state almost ended up going there. What a beautiful campus and college game day is going to have the best backdrop. Will, before we let you go, what has to be the order for people if they go visit and they go to the Daniel Boone in. What do they have to get? It's primarily like a family style anyway. So you get a whole bunch of everything. And last time I was there, it was just cut your hand and it's primarily a lot breakfast stuff. I've never really dinner there, but I mean, they got fried chicken, everything. All kinds of southern southern comfort booties, I guess you could say, but it's family style, so go hungry to do it. I love that. 100%. Take it easy on Jimbo fish or even though maybe you should have took out Haynes king. Maybe it had time, but everybody goes, take it easy on jimbos, just like what happened to calipari and the NCAA tournament overreactions, but just take it easy on my man, Jimbo, but go mountaineers a lot. I love it. I can not wait to see what this team does. This coming weekend as will said with game day there, but yeah, we're going to talk more about what this means for Jimbo Fisher and this Texas a and M team as they move forward because if anybody was surprised about this one, it was not coach Fisher who spent all last week talking about this being a trap game. This is a good Appalachian state team. We're going to have to come ready if we want to get out with a win over the mountaineers, which obviously they were not able to do. We're going to take a break here on the Paul fine bomb show. When we come back, more of your calls. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Back to the poll find bomb show. I'm Alyssa Lang. We got plenty of guests coming your way. Conor o'gara at 4 o'clock Eastern Time of Saturday down south to give us his run through on week two, chase good bread at 5 15 eastern of the Tuscaloosa news plenty to talk about with that Alabama, Texas game, and then the final hour, Spencer hall, and Richard Johnson going to join me here on the set to preview. What's coming up on thinking out loud and of course get their thoughts on Texas, not necessarily being back, but first, we've got Barrett Saleh of CBS sports joining us now. Let's start Barrett with what happened down in College Station with Jimbo Fisher and Texas a and M. I'll start with this. How surprised were you that this game went the way that it did based on what we saw from this team in week one? Thanks for having me, Liza. I was surprised that that Appalachian state was able to own the line of scrimmage in the way that it did. I didn't think that it would win, but I certainly thought that it would cover. I just think when a team like Appalachian state, they're better at quarterback, as chase Brice, in my opinion, is better than Haynes king or anybody else that Texas a and M can try out there right now. And I didn't necessarily anticipate the offensive and defensive lines for Texas a and M to be that bad. But I do think the offensive line has been and will continue to be a problem. So I think for Texas a and M, it's all about how well their defense plays. And their defense did not get Appalachian state off the field. That was the main problem. If that offense is asked to do anything of substance from an explosive standpoint, I don't believe that it can do that. Barrett, you mentioned Haynes king. And I think that's the biggest question now for Aggie fans is do we continue to say see Haines king or do we see max Johnson come in and play some snaps this coming weekend? Do we have a quarterback battle on our hands? What would you do if you were Jimbo Fisher? I would make a change to max Johnson and see what he can do. Unfortunately for tech staying in fans, Jimbo Fisher is stubborn to a fault and have probably played campaign skiing, but I think right now you have to see what max Johnson can do. He's had success in the SEC. He's a little bit more mobile than I think folks give credit for. And really there's nothing to lose. I think you know what you're going to get with Haines king. And that's not good, especially going up against the potential first round draft pick at quarterback and Tyler Van Dyke. So I think let max Johnson cook see what happens. And if it doesn't work out, then you go on to plan C and I don't know if that's wegman or going back to king or whatever, but I think at this point, the offense is limited. I don't necessarily know if it would change if somebody else goes in there because it is Jimbo's offense. And I think he is stuck in a rut from 5, 6, 7 years ago and has an evolved, but I think right now you have to at least consider it. And if it was my decision, I would see what max Johnson can do. And you're going again. If it doesn't work out, you move on to policy. You mentioned Miami's quarterback, obviously Miami coming to College Station this weekend. The biggest challenge that this team will see so far. But then you look at the rest of a and M schedule, then they have Arkansas, Mississippi state, Alabama, South Carolina, all miss. Knowing that the rest of their schedules really going to be challenging until they get to that U mask game on November 19th, where's your panic level with this a and M team as we stand right now? Well, I thought they'd be in 8 and 14 at best. So my panic level is probably different than others, but I didn't think they'd lose the app state. I am definitely concerned they're not going to beat Arkansas. They're not going to beat Alabama. They're not going to be Florida. They're not going to be to omit. So yes, it's a tough situation.

"For Paul. Of hesitating, I'm hesitant to say this, but I do not want to say better call Gaul. I do not like that. Producer Danny B force dead on me. Force that on me. 85 5 two four two 7 two 8 5. If you want to call the show, ACC media days coming up, 9 quarterbacks are going to be in attendance at ACC media days coming up. I believe it's the 20th ish. I think it's late next week for the ACC always one of the better events. And filled your COVID from Boston college, DJ ooey Angela Lake and to be there for Clemson, Jordan Travis. A guy that I think people need to pay attention to at Florida state as they continue to get better and better over the course of the second half of last season. I think Florida state is going to be a tricky dangerous team this year. Malik Cunningham, of course, at Louisville, who I feel like has been around for the better part of 500 years. For the Cardinals, Tyler Van Dyke might be a first round draft pick in Mario Cristobal's first year at Miami. He's going to be there at ACC media days Garrett Schrader who I think is an underrated player. I don't know if he's going to be ever one of the most consistent and accurate passers, but he is a freak of an athlete, a really good runner of the football. He'll be there for Syracuse. One man offense, Brendan Armstrong last year who I think was accounting for like 400 yards of total offense every game for Virginia. He will be there. Sam Hartman, who accounted for 50 touchdowns last year. And as I believe, also in his 16th year starting for wake forest is going to be there. And I think the most underrated quarterback in the country. Yes, that's right. I think the most underrated quarterback potentially in the country. Is a guy that is going to be on a top 15 team on a team that could compete for a playoff spot and could compete for a conference championship. In the ACC. And I know the fans of this team know exactly who I'm talking about, because I haven't mentioned them yet. How about this? How many guys in college football last year had 35 touchdown passes? 5 interceptions. Through for over 3000 yards, one 9 games, as a starter, how many guys in college football can say that they have Devin Leary's resume? NC state quarterback Devin Leary gonna be there. Dudes dudes of baller y'all. The quarterbacks in the ACC. I think the SEC has got the best quarterback list. That they've had in ten years, since 2013, if you go back to 2013 in the SEC, we talked a little bit about this yesterday. But if you go back to 2013 in the SEC. And you look at the SEC quarterback list, the number of players, the names that were in that in that league. Johnny manziel, Aaron Murray, AJ McCARRON, Connor Shaw, dak Prescott, Nick Marshall, James Franklin, Zach mettenberger, Bo Wallace. That was as good a quarterback season as I can remember in the SEC. Again, remember, Connor Shaw probably the best quarterback in South Carolina history. I mean, Johnny manziel Aaron Murray, like AJ McCARRON, Heisman, these are Heisman type of guys. Aaron Murray probably should have won a national title. Frankly, in 2012. Or would a competed for a national title had he just gotten a guy to go 5 more yards? People forget how close that Georgia team was to win in the whole thing. I wonder if I wonder if Kirby smart would even be there with Mark Rick still be there if they had won that championship in 2012. Point is, you look at the ACC this year. And again, I think the SEC is as good as 2013. I think the ACC has as good as the SEC this year. That quarterback roster, Jacob, Travis, Cunningham, Van Dyke, Leary, Armstrong Hartman. Is Keaton slovis the guy at Pittsburgh. There's some guys that aren't even going to be at media days that could be pretty good. I just think you look at that late that league and you go, this is one of the best collections of quarterbacks in the country. Again, tell me a quarterback. How about this? Cam rising at Utah and Devin Leary at NC state are the two most underrated quarterbacks in America. How about that? I will choose violence on a Wednesday. Convince me that you've got a name that's more undervalued than one of those two guys. Devin Leary, 35 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 9 wins for NC state. How many seasons has NC state won double digit games? One time. One time, if they go ten and two this year, it will be the second time in school history that NC state has won ten games. Kentucky has won ten games twice in the last 5 years. That's how good Devin Leary is. Cam rising same thing if they don't screw up and lose at the beginning of the season because he didn't start by the way for Utah. They might have been in the playoff last year. Instead of Cincinnati, instead of Michigan, although maybe it would have been instead of Georgia, which wouldn't have been right, but whatever. You want to convince me there's a better quarterback? 855-242-7285 convince me. Convince me of that. How about this? Let's take a, let's talk some ACC football in just a few minutes here. All right? David Hale gonna join us. Let's do that in just a minute. 855-242-7285. My name is Braden Gaul.

"And if you can keep your direct competitor from gaining inventory, that is also worth some money. And so if the ESPN wants to keep Oregon in Washington in house, you're going to overpay for the PAC 12. I also think there's some counter programming marketing strategies there where I think it's easy to sell. Again, the numbers aren't going to be Alabama auburn numbers or Michigan Ohio State numbers. Nobody expects that. They aren't right now. They haven't ever been. But we certainly I don't know about you guys. I love PAC 12 after dark. It is like one of my favorite things about the fall. My wife's asleep, the kids are asleep, nice glass of whisky, sit on the couch, you know, just by myself, a couple TVs going to town on some back 12 football. That's my idea of a good time on a Saturday night in the fall. I don't know about you guys. Maybe that makes me a giant nerd. I'm okay with that. 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5. And what got me thinking? And I want you guys to chime in on this. Because I am having a major I'm having big trouble here. I'm having major, major problems. Filling out some of my playoff ballots for 2022. Let's forget about expansion for a second. And let's look at the actual games that are going to happen this year because I do think the big 12. If you look at the big 12 and media days were today and we asked Heather didn't about this a few minutes ago. You could make the case for probably half of that league to have a legitimate shot to make it to the title game. I'm not picking Texas. I'm not picking West Virginia. I'm not going to pick Kansas state, but I think all three of those teams have what it takes to potentially make a run and get into the big 12 championship game. I think the top three are Baylor Oklahoma state and Oklahoma. In some order, I like Baylor a whole lot. Picking Blake shape and I think at quarterback with an identity that David Miranda has established, I think they are a very good football team. I like Baylor to win the big 12. But do I like him to be a playoff team? I don't know. So while the big 12 is wide open and I think very competitive and very interesting and filled with drama all season long this year. It's going to be a ton of fun. I don't know if there's a playoff team in there. I look at the ACC and I go, all right, Clemson. Dang, man. Probably the best defensive line in all of college football. Two new coordinators. Tougher schedule, Florida state's getting better. NC states really good wake forest is pretty good in the division. You got to play Miami late. South Carolina is now a bowl team. That schedules a much tougher than you got to play out Notre-Dame. Clemson is a much much tougher schedule. Oh, they were terrible last year. Well, were they? Or do they lose by 7 to the national champs where they only gave up ten total points, three on offense? Did they lose an overtime to one of the best NC state teams we've ever seen? Okay. Their losses, Clemson last year. They were close to being an 11 win team and an ACC champ. So as Clemson, the team from the ACC that could get into the playoff. Is it Miami? Is Tyler Van Dyke and Mario Cristobal's first year that good? Can wake forest with Sam Hartman replicate what they did last year? I really, really like NC state. I think they are very dangerous. What about Pittsburgh? Can they repeat? How good is Florida state going to be? Malik Cunningham at Louisville how good are they going to be? The ACC is also wide open just like the big 12, which leads us to a problem with the playoff. And I'll include the PAC 12 in this. How good is Utah Oregon and USC? The three best teams in that conference. How good are they? Are they good enough? To be 11 and one 12 and one 13 and zero playoff teams at the end of the year. I don't know. I think Utah is the best one. They've got to go on the road and beat Florida in a true road game in week one, which might be the coolest week one game on the entire schedule. Utah at Florida sign me up. But Utah is going to have to play perfect football to get into the playoff. So what do we do in here? Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State. Okay. Who else is getting in, guys? Those three are the overwhelming favorites by Vegas and everyone else to make it to the college football playoff. Who is number four? I have never seen a year in college football where I have no clue who's number four. I don't even know who belongs in the conversation. I could rattle off 15 teams. And you'd probably have to go, oh, all right. I could see it. I could see it. Clemson, NC state, a and M, Baylor, Notre-Dame, Michigan. USC, Oregon. Utah. Does Miami belong in this conversation as the favor to win their division? What about Wisconsin? Iowa, who's going to win the west in the Big Ten. What about Cincinnati in the group of 5? Got to replace a whole lot. Is some second place team in the SEC good enough. Like Michigan in the Big Ten is Tennessee good enough to get to 11 one. I don't think so. LSU Arkansas Mississippi. Who's number four? This is what I want you to tell me. Who is the number 14? I don't think you can argue with Bama Giorgio Ohio State. But tell me who belongs at number four. Who is the other team that's going to make the playoff? 855-242-7285. I will come into this with an open mind. I want you to tell me who you think belongs at number four in the list. We did this for Athlon sports. I work at Athlon sports. We put together the magazine. We put one, two, and three down on the line. We didn't even argue about it. And then we got to number four and it took us three months. It took us three minutes to pick the top three. It took us three months to pick number four. I want to hear who you think should be in the playoff. Who make the case to me? For number four in the playoffs, 855-242-7285, because oh by the way, we still have a football season to play this year. Expansion is going on in the world seems to be spinning out of control, but we got a whole host of really awesome football games coming up in a couple of months. Next month, we got college football. Tell me who belongs at number four, 855-242-7285. I'll tell you my pick. My name is Braden Gaul in for Paul. This is the Paul fine bomb show here on ESPN radio. "To your phone calls momentarily. Got the ACC announcing which players will be at ACC media days, 9 quarterbacks in that conference, as I said yesterday on the show, I think it is one of the best collections of quarterbacks I've seen at the ACC in the ACC period full stop. Filled your COVID is going to be there for Boston college. Jordan Travis for Florida state, a good statement on where he's at on that team. Malik Cunningham, Tyler Van Dyke is a very good player for Miami. He's going to be there Devin Leary very underrated for NC state. Brennan Armstrong, of course, like the one man 500 yards of offense show for Virginia Sam Hartman, who's thrown like a bazillion touchdowns and started 4000 football games for wake forest, which is a record. He'll be there. And of course, Garrett Schrader for Syracuse is going to be there as well, a guy that's really athletic and fun to watch. So 9 quarterback's going to be there. The big 12. At their media days, the conference commissioner Brett your book, the brand new conference commissioner basically said, we are open for business. As it pertains to expansion. So taking all phone calls, if you've got a football team and you want to see if the big 12s interested, give the big 12 a call, give old Brett your mark a call and see if they're interested in see if they're interested in your product. Joining here. But 8 5 5 two four two. 7 two 8 5. Again, the playoff is lost in all this expansion conversation. Like we're still trying to compete for a championship here. And Alabama looks like the best football team. Georgia looks like the second best team with the best schedule setting up to be 12 and O in Atlanta. I think Ohio State's clearly the best team in the Big Ten. They get Michigan at home at the end of the year. And I have the best offense in America. I think those three are in. Barring some major upsets, which is obviously why we watch. But I think those three are in. The problem is figuring out the fourth team. It's the most difficult prediction I can remember since the playoff became a thing in 2014. I've only got a handful of teams that I would argue belong in that conversation. But you can make the case for a few different. Somebody made the case for Penn State. I'm not buying that. Somebody made the case for Clemson. I'm on board with that. I think Clemson has a very good chance. To get into the playoff. But they're going to have to be perfect in conference because they have to go to Notre-Dame in non conference. 855-242-7285 convinced me of who belongs in the playoff with the big three, Bama, Georgia, and Ohio State. Is this butler from Atlanta? Butler, welcome to the welcome to the Paul fine bomb show. How are you? Hey, hunter. How you doing? Hunter, sorry, I apologize. Yeah, no problem. Yeah, so I was just listening to the other radio and you were naming the 15 teams. You can consider taking that four spot. And you said, I heard Mississippi stayed. I heard a and M, or Tennessee, maybe Florida. I mean, I think it's hard to mention those teams. If you're not even going to mention old mess, I realize we just lost Matt corral, but lane kiffin's done and amazing job of turning the program over in these past couple of years. We got Jackson diet to replace him. We stole Zach Evans, the PCU, and I don't know if you've seen almost a schedule this year, but it is rather easy, starts out with four free wins that will help Jackson get acquainted. And then from there, it's just what did Wayne Kevin can really finalize the deal. I mean, I don't really see any big competitors, the final stretch, they go, a and M, Bama, Arkansas, and Mississippi. And obviously bam was going to be going to be a major challenge. But if any of Nick Saban's old assistant coaches can do the job, you know, I think lane kiffin be the one to do it. I appreciate the call, hunter. I think it is a major testament to the job lane kiffin has done. To look at last year's team with a historically epic productive quarterback in Matt corral, ten regular season wins, a record for olmes, to lose so much and to say they're going to be as good. And frankly, to be in a quote unquote, reloading, rebuilding year, whatever you want to call it for all this. And if they go 8 and four, I would call that a huge testament to the job that Lincoln has done. But I am not, I have all missed at like 6 place in the west. So I am not picking oldness to challenge for the playoffs. To be honest, I don't Florida is not in that group either. The only reason I said Tennessee or Kentucky is because they could finish second in the east. Again, I'm not picking any of those teams to go. 11 and one, but Kentucky won ten games last year. So let's not go. They haven't lost as much. They still have their quarterback. I think the west schedules are tougher too. So I don't think it's Arkansas Mississippi state LSU or old miss because they the schedules are too hard. A and M would be the pick. If you're trying to make a case for a second place team in the SEC to make the playoff, it would be Texas a and M but then you're asking Texas a and M not to do Texas a and M things. Which is to be perfect. In every other game, not named Alabama. And I don't know if I'll believe it when I see it. With Texas a and M I think they're ten and two. And I don't think that's good enough to get into the playoff. So I really don't think a third SEC team is in this conversation to be fair. I do think oldness is a really good program with lane kiffin and their schedule is real front loaded. They could go 7 and O and then own 5. It's real tough in November. So I still think I like Mississippi a lot. I think that's going to be a real dangerous football team. But their schedule is nasty. Nasty. 855-242-7285 ray from San Antonio ray, welcome to the show. How are you, sir? Hey brother, how you doing today? Doing well, man. Blessings to I am an Aggie class of 1980 and I'm a really try to not include any bias in this, but a and M to get over the top. It has taken step one by beating Alabama here at home, but they're really going to have to beat Alabama in the way big game. I think to really command the respect that Alabama already commands, I think that can happen. And if it does, I think a and M will supplant Alabama. Obviously, and I think that if they go take care of business, you just said it and I totally agree with you when the games that they need to win and win a big game or two, then I think they can be right there.

"Filling in for Paul at brayden gall on Twitter if you want to get to me there. 855-242-7285 if you want to get into the phone lines. Chris slowe coming up in just a few minutes, of course. Listen, that's embedded thing is fascinating to me because I think he just got largely disrespected. Again, I will hold myself accountable and say I was guilty of that asking about JT Daniels for the better part of a year and a half. Now let's be very clear. If we are ranking quarterbacks in the SEC, which I don't like to do on radio because ranking stuff is kind of silly. But if you are ranking quarterbacks in the SEC, stetson Bennett is not one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC. He's not one of the best quarterbacks in the country because then you're talking about talent. And you're talking about statistical production and you're talking about all the different things that goes into playing that position. So here's the thing. This is where two things have to be true at the same time. Two things can be true. And yes, I have faith in all of you that you can keep two things in your mind at the same time. That stetson Bennett won the national championship was a worthy winner of the national championship, earned the ring that he won with the Georgia bulldogs. And was an excellent player for them. And also, at the same time, is not one of the best three or four quarterbacks in the SEC this year. Is that fair to say? I don't think that's unfair. Bryce young is the best quarterback in the SEC in my opinion. Oh, crazy, hot take, right? Two through four to me are pretty even. I'm okay arguing whoever you want to argue. KJ Jefferson at Arkansas hinden hooker and Will Rogers. No surprise hooker and Jefferson will be in Atlanta at SEC media days representing their universities. A little surprise Will Rogers will not be for Mississippi state. He's played a lot of games. I would put those three guys at two three and four in some order. However you want to order them, that would be two through four in the conference. Then at 5, you could discuss a lot of different players. Anthony Richardson at Florida will levis a Kentucky our top ten caliber draft picks as projected right now by the experts. Are they better a quarterbacks than sets in Bennett? Certainly not from an accomplishment standpoint or from an experience standpoint. But if you put those two guys in Georgia's roster as their offense a little bit better, maybe. So I think you could argue Richardson and leave a set at 5 and 6. All right, well, where to stetson Bennett, you can't knock stetson Bennett down to 7th in the conference, can you? I think stetson Bennett could be national championship caliber good on that particular Georgia team and also still be the 6th, 7th or 8th best quarterback in the league. I don't think I don't think that's that crazy of a statement. And that doesn't include a whole lot of really talented players that we haven't even brought into this conversation in this league. Who wins the job at a and M, I bet you was going to be a really talented player. No matter who it is, you know, Haines king, max Johnson, Connor Weidman, you name it. Who's going to win the job at LSU, Jayden Daniels, Garrett nussmeier. Miles Brennan, like, pretty talented guy there. The old miss Jackson dart pretty talented transfer from USC. Spencer Rattler was a FrontRunner when the Heisman just last season. This is one of the best collections of quarterbacks. I have ever seen at this stage heading into an SEC football season. Now, I guess you'd have to point back to, was it 2013? We're good friend Aaron Murray was there. I want to say Johnny manziel dak Prescott. I think Zach mettenberger was at LSU. I want to say it was James Franklin, the player, not the coach at Missouri, right? So that 2013 season, I'm sure I'm missing some guys here, but that 2013 year was a pretty exceptional year for quarterback play in the SEC. And frankly, part of the reason the conference struggled after that was bad coaching and a lack of talent the quarterback position. That has all changed. The coaching now in this league off the charts. The quarterback play in this league coming into this year off the charts. So I think this stetson Bennett conversation is, I don't know why it's still a thing that we talk about. And maybe I'm the one who's guilty about it because I'm the one talking about it right now. But maybe I just don't think it's disrespectful to call him the 5th or 6th best quarterback in the SEC. But I also think he deserves credit for winning a national championship and making big plays all season long when he needed to. 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5 JK and Birmingham. JK, what's up, man? What's going on, buddy? What's up dude? Hey man, let me address pat I'm gonna call him a so called George a fan. This guy waited almost 800 and 41 years before George and won another national championship and he wants to dog out his quarterback that actually won a national championship. What happened to all the quarterbacks that he was fond of since the years of Herschel Walker and the championship? I mean, that's just to me that's totally disrespect. And pat ought to be ashamed of himself and just congratulate the young man and hope he does the same thing this year. But what I called about is I'm a Miami hurricane fan calling the fine bomb show. Here in SEC country. I want to get your opinion on the top end where my hurricanes are going to finish. And the worst scenario where they got to finish this year because I'm looking for a play out run. Oh, I like thank you, JK for the call. I love this. I love where this Miami team is going. I do not know if 2022 is the year where they get there. But I think they can win the division. I think Tyler Van Dyck, and we're going to learn a lot about Miami in week number three against Texas a and M on the road in College Station. That is such an underrated non conference game. That is a preseason top ten a and M team and a preseason top 20 Miami team, two huge brands. Mario Cristobal just crushing it on recruiting trail right now in South Florida. The name image and likeness stuff for Miami's in full effect, they are absolutely reinvesting in college football. Unlike Miami has done in years, it is fun to see the you looking like the you at least the beginning stages of it. So Miami at a and M is going to show us a lot about how good both of those two teams are. And I don't think many people are talking about that game. Tyler Van Dyke, very, very good. I think the upside is ten wins. And you win the division and you compete for an ACC championship. I think that's upside. I'm not willing to say playoff yet is the upside. The downside is you have a tough schedule, a lot of teams in the ACC are better than you think. Florida state's better teams in your division are better in the coastal. You lose to a and M and the non conference, all of a sudden you're 8 and 7, 8 wins. And you've had a solid season, but it's not big time. That to me is the window for Miami. 7 wins up to about ten wins. That would be the window for Miami. I think there are preseason top 20 team. I think they should win the division and compete for an AC championship. That's how much I think of Cristobal and that's how much I think of Tyler Van Dyke. Oh, you're talking about this season, you mean? Yes. That is an awesome football game. I think Mario Cristobal has been doing a phenomenal job recruiting. It's been unbelievable. I think so that's the same weekend as Penn State and auburn. And auburn is going to be lit up with Penn State coming down there. It's going to be great. It's going to define auburn season. It's going to define Penn State season. But I think people are sleeping on the Miami a and M game and thank you, Jim for the call. I appreciate it. Because I agree with you. Tyler Van Dyke getting all kinds of hype as an NFL prospect. Cristobal doing work on the recruiting trail right now. I think that a and M Miami game is so much bigger than it's getting credit for right now. I feel like it's going under the radar in terms of big non conference games we're talking about. We're talking about Oregon and Georgia and week one. Utah and Florida is really interesting. Notre-Dame, Ohio State. We're talking about all these bam a Texas, like all these huge non conference games. Miami at a and M, like if a and M loses at home to Miami. With a far better roster, Miami with the better quarterback, that to me, man, talk about signaling to the rest of the SEC, what's going on with aggies. Man, if they win and they beat Miami, they'll be favored in that game at home. If they beat Miami, they're setting themselves up for a run at a playoff spot. That is an extraordinarily interesting football game that not many people are talking about. Kevin and Alabama, Kevin, welcome to the show. What's up, man? Hey, I mean, I appreciate you taking the call. Yeah, dude. A little bit earlier. You were talking about the ACC falling apart and I believe RG correct, you said you would take Clemson and North Carolina and put them in the SEC. If I heard you right. No, I think the first targets are going to be for the SEC. The first targets are going to be North Carolina and Virginia tech for those two states. And I think the Big Ten is going to do the same thing. Well, in my opinion, I personally hope they don't do that as an SEC guy. I personally, if it was if it was my call, I think I'd be looking into the Miami of Florida state two teams in the ACC coming in the SEC because if you look at it right now, if you look at it right now, Clemson might have, but most recent success of the teams, and then of course, as far as locations go, you go with one of the Virginia Virginia schools, which is fine. But if you look at the projections and the way that the recruiting has changed, I personally think the teams that I grew up watching football in the 90s that were dominant like your Miami and Florida states are well on their way back to being those schools again. So ultimately, if it's a money thing, if you look at the way the in ideals and IO bills are going to change things, Miami's coming back, Florida state is coming back. I think Clemson is going to fall off. I don't think dad was going to be able to keep the success that he used to have for one, bring inventables is no longer there. That defense is going to take a hit anyway you look at it. He's not going to be able to recruit the same and I think Clint is going to fall off man and if you're looking to add in power to the conferences, I think Miami and Florida state are going to be the two teams that would make the biggest boom when that time comes. Thank you, Kevin. I appreciate that. And I think the answer to the question is, what are the priorities of the decision makers? That is what matters here. If the priorities of the decision makers are top 5 top ten potential programs that can win national championships, then it is Clemson Miami and Florida state at the top of the list. If it is recruiting territory, recruiting base, bigger markets, new territory than it is the state of North Carolina and the state of Virginia. I think they want both, but I think they want North Carolina and Virginia first. I think that is their priority. But that is the debate that is going on right now with decision makers. What is our priority? More your calls next. Brayden gallen for Paul finebaum here on ESPN radio.

"Of the program is live and we appreciate you continuing to join us. More of your calls and meanwhile, Brandon gall joins us with Athlon. He's also a radio host and who has been in here recently and we're delighted to say hello to Brandon Brandon. First of all, thanks for help. I'm sorry. Let me get your name right. First of all, I don't know. I keep seeing the sign about Brandon everywhere and I got confused. Sorry, I was right. It was up right there. Braden, thank you. And my apologies. I was rushing so much to thank you for filling in for us a few weeks ago. I got your name incorrect, which next time you fill in, you can just talk about your posting the sol fine bomb show. How are you, by the way? I'm great. It's been a great couple of weeks with talking season getting started early this year. So I know it's been great. It's great to be here and I appreciate you having. I know, I think I saw an Athlon the other day at an airport, and I can't wait to dig into it, but it is usually that first magazine that comes out, I remember going back in history, I think it had that reputation, and we couldn't wait to run down to the drug store. And get it in terms of just putting things into a magazine that a lot of us suspect, but don't know. What goes into all of that? A whole lot of spreadsheets. And for those that don't know a drug store is a place where they sell prescription medication and various other things for those of you who don't order it all at home. No, it takes months and months and months. It used to be a much larger process. It's been trimmed obviously with the print industry, but at the same time, you look at roster management, which is like the biggest issue for all head coaches right now in college football. That's the biggest issue for us, putting the magazine together is just the transfer portal and all this stuff and even things in the magazine aren't necessarily exactly right because kids are still making decisions later in the process than ever before. So I think still roster management is much like most head coaches. That's the most difficult job. A part of the job right now when it comes to putting the magazine together. But otherwise, it's a lot of arguing and sitting in meetings and throwing staplers at each other and things of that nature before we decide on who's going to be number four this year, which was our biggest debate. And Braden, you want to get it out, but you also don't want to get the wrong quarterback at the wrong school. So what is the drop dead date? A couple of weeks ago, I don't have that date exact, but it's generally the end of April. We've had a couple of really major, but not screw ups, but there was a motorcycle accident allegedly allegedly in the SEC a couple years back that we happened after we went to press. Everett golson transferred to Florida state one year from Notre-Dame. He was on the cover of a magazine, which was probably one of our bigger issues, but at some point you have to push it out the door and be done with it. And once that happens, it's out of your hands. And so then you just sort of a lot of hail marys that nothing's going to happen. Weird. I think the Jim trestle thing at Ohio State happened after we went to press. By a good margin. So those things happen and you just got to, it's just part of the game. Yeah, Jim trus was Memorial Day weekend. The accident. The other action I think was April fools day, wasn't it? The motorcycle. That's about right. By the way, do you happen to have, I love that if you still have one of those cover shots, I'd love to, that would be a collector's item. So you mentioned, I didn't mean to bury the leader. You were talking about the great debate. So take us into the dark room, Braden, what were the big debates that all of you had to deal with before settling on however you ended up doing it? Well, all the people you have on your show, I think everyone's discussing who number four is. And I think you can make the case for, I don't know, 15 or 20 teams, honestly. Like Michigan was 26 or 27 last year in the preseason rankings, and then they go into Ohio stare, they take a House state at home and they beat them and they had one loss, they get in as an unranked pre season team. So, you know, Cincinnati was a preseason top ten team last year. I think it's more about the G 5 thing that made them more of a surprise. So Alabama Ohio State and Georgia are pretty clear. I think no matter what poll you look at in the pre season no matter what magazine you buy, you're probably going to see those three in some order at the top. Alabama was a no brainer for us at number one. I think you could argue Georgia belongs at number two and we're going to see two more meetings between those two this year. I understand the argument for Ohio State. After that, it's all hands on deck because Clemson is the pick we have, but I don't feel great about it. They've got the best defensive line in the country, and this is my company answer here, Paul, which is Afghan likes Clemson at number four because the path through the ACC is better for them than almost anybody else. A and M's got a tougher path, Michigan's gonna have a tougher path. The big 12 may not be good enough to pack 12 may not be good enough. But anybody from Ford about 20, we've got Miami at number 20 and they could win that we've got them winning the coastal division and playing in the AC championship game. If Tyler Van Dyke hits and Mario Cristobal hits and all of a sudden Miami's good, like I wouldn't be surprised if a team ranked 1819 or 20 ends up in that four slot. So that was the toughest. I've been an athlete since O 7. This was the toughest decision we've ever made, was the number four team in the playoff in this magazine. So we picked Clemson. I totally understand the argument for 15 other teams. Yeah, and Clemson, they do not have Georgia to open the season with, so that's a break. I don't even know who is their non conference game to begin their tough non conference chair. I don't have the schedule in front of me. You're calling me out here on national radio. I appreciate that. I would answer, but I don't have my Athlon yet, so that's why I'm asking you. Touche. No, they're non conferences fairly manageable. And again, this is why we have constant number four. I don't necessarily think they're the fourth best team in America. Because Athlon or no Athlon, we've got a crack staff. They open a Georgia Tech. They have Furman, Louisiana tech, South Carolina. At Notre-Dame. So. They added Notre-Dame, so they're at Notre-Dame. Miami is at home, I agree with you on Miami, though. I hear great things about their quarterback. But let's get back to the SEC for a second. Let me ask you, Georgia at number two. Is that what you told me? I personally would have George at number two. We have them at number three. If you look at their regular season schedule, I don't know if there's a game on their schedule that they're not going to be at least a double digit favorite. And if you go down their schedule and look, I actually think Oregon is a really interesting challenge for them because that's the best offensive line probably in the PAC 12. And if Dan lanning and Bo nix, maybe it's ty Thompson if they can kind of get everything together..

"Defensive coordinator. So maybe they'll be a little bit more physical. I think we'll find out in Atlanta week one. When they play Georgia, good luck. Dan landing is about to find out. You got to get through. You got to get those big man on the West Coast. You need some big men out there. Time for Birmingham. Welcome to the show. Yeah, I'm on airs. I'm Tom, a rehab of Stein bumps, old stomping ground. I've lived here 32 years that I grew up here. It's been great. Primarily because college sports is king. And I love college sports. So it's great to live in a Birmingham, not too far from Tesco. Lucy, or I went to law school. I talked to your doing a great job. You guys, we're welcome you. Paul needs a break and that's great. But I've been a long time listener, Paul and he's great too. And enjoy it. But what I told you and you cut me off, it's like we've had several callers who have voiced that opinion. I have my opinions about this controversy between Sabin and Fisher. And I'll just tell you my thoughts and if they've already been said, you say, look, somebody has already said that. And then I'll move on to .2. .2 has to do with Miami. And the future under crystal, I think after many meteor for years, they get the best arguably recruiter in the countries of course, I'm going to Alabama follower, but I'm taking up for Jimbo here. And what the exchange in some ways and how this can be brought to an end. If you've already heard that, I'll just move on to crystal ball. There's been a lot of there's been a lot of Miami sniping on this. I know. A lot of my guy who hates Alabama, JK. It's like, look, you features bright, man. You got the best recruiter in the country. He's a good coach, but he recruits and four or 5 years. It will be right up there and there are number one. Just be patient. You'll see improvement this season. It's just like Saban when he first came. He didn't win always games. It took till 2010 now. It took him three years, full years, he won the national championship, January of 2011. And then their persistent number one, they lost two games, which I sort of lost in South Carolina. Give me a break. And the last auburn that year, Cam Newton auburn, they had a 24 point lead. It was painful to watch. I disagree. I thought that was I thought that was quite a technique, but Tom were up against it, all right? I appreciate you calling in. Tom, by the way, had like a real sort of dramatic voice. Yeah, I like that. Like a history. Like a history podcast, like a slow build. We've talked a lot about Miami, but Miami faces the challenges that I think a lot of people outside of the SEC and the Big Ten face, which is getting big men and skilled players in the same place at the same time. Sometimes get one, some teams get the other. If you can get guys along the line and a solid quarterback, which is the thing that Miami hasn't had. Like, we'll see. Tyler Van Dyke. I know. He's coming on. I like him, but we got to prove it. Well, Ross Ross dellinger of sports illustrator who we had on earlier in the show made this point. This, all these teams sort of making the most chatter about NIL right now, are these programs that have been also rans in the recent past, yet have a pass that goes a little bit farther back that has quite a little bit of success in the 80s and the 90s, Tennessee, Miami, a and M a and M a little bit further back in the 80s in the 90s. But they have at least some sort of success and they are trying like all hell to get back to that. And in so doing, they are making the most noise on their way there. Which is what I think is interesting about this whole subplot here. Yeah, let's go ahead and take another call. Line four. Line four row from Boston. Guys, what's going on? First of all, I want to give a shout out to the split.

This is a guy who was tremendously productive was a Heisman Trophy finalist with the 20th pick. The Pittsburgh jailer. So look, Kenny Pickett. Best friend. It's a great food for Kenny bigot. Even if they think that you're gonna fly. I guess I'll lie. We felt he came ready at pro level accuracy. That's exactly where I thought I would be. Kenny Pickett was the only quarterback selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft going 20th overall Pittsburgh. It marked just the fourth time since 2000 that only one quarterback was selected in the first round of a draft with Pickett joining the likes of EJ Manuel Michael Vick and Chad Pennington's. Welcome to NFL live, one of the biggest stories of last week's draft was only Pickett being chosen. They're a slide for the other quarterbacks, right? And we're gonna get into that because we're gonna actually look ahead to next year. It should be much different. Louis Riddick, Tim Hasselbeck Todd mcshay. Here with you for the hour Diana rossini joins us as well. And guys, how quickly we move on. It's already time to talk about 2023. Why not? We got Todd's way too early, 2023 mock draft and tied the headline here as you see him highlighted. 5 quarterbacks in the top ten take us through these names. Yeah, we're throwing it back to 2021 when we had an embarrassment of riches at quarterback. I started at number 9. Let's take a look at the quarterback there. Tyler Van Dyke, I had going to Seahawks. Listen, he's coming out of Miami last year, Derek king got injured early in the season. Van Dyke came on and he really sparked this Kane's offense. He's tall at 6 foot four, 225 pounds. He's mobile. His flashes are brilliant, but he's got to be a lot more consistent in his second year as a starter in order to be a first round pick. Then at number 8, I had the New York Giants taking will levis from Kentucky. It's hard to watch him on tape at times because you know the talent's there. He's 6 three, 232 pounds. He's mobile as well. He has a strong arm. They just don't utilize it a whole lot. They didn't at least this past year. A lot of throws within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage with one Dale Robinson Ghana. I anticipate they're going to open things up a little bit more. The wildcats next season. Then at number 6, I had to Carolina Panthers taking a quarterback after taking one of the third round this year, and that was Anthony Richardson from Florida. Listen, these are all projections, but this is a real big projection. You talk about skill set 6 four, two 36, the ability to run. He's got a howitzer for an arm. But he threw 5 interceptions, almost as many touch as touchdown passes a year ago. He's got a big jump that he has to make after starting just two games last season. Now on to the top two guys. Bryce younger had going number two over all the Detroit Lions, young was fantastic last season. When you talk about the beginning of the season to the end, his ability to manipulate a defense is outstanding inside the pocket. Yes, he has some mobility, but this guy will kill you with his mind inside the pocket throwing the football. And then the number one quarterback I had, and I debated between Bryce young and CJ Strauss. I went with Stroud at number one to the Houston Texans. He's a little bit bigger at 6 three, 218. He's just pinpoint accuracy as a passer. I love the way he throws the football and you look at the Utah game in the rose bowl. When he was missing the top two receivers Garrett Wilson and Chris olave, who were both picked in the top 11 of the draft, he still was throwing dime after dime after diamond that game. So it's going to be interesting. It's definitely going to be Stroud versus young, which one will be the first quarterback off the board when it comes to the next April's draft. Yeah, it's fascinating to hear these names and think about how exciting it's going to be to watch these guys in college football and Todd, you mentioned the size difference in Stroud and young that being a differentiator when you think about those two. But you got Stroud one, you got young two, the top two quarterbacks. Is there anything else that makes them a little bit different for you in your mind when you try to evaluate them? There's not a whole lot. They both like to beat you from inside the pocket. I do think young is more is more developed in terms of understanding what defenses are doing and how he progresses from rewind to two to three so quickly. I can remind myself, Laura, several times watching his tape this past season, he's just a one year starter. Same thing for Stroud, but Bryce, it really is about the mind and the timing versus I'm extraordinary just as a natural God given talent to put the ball on the target. Now, granted, he has three first round receivers that he was throwing to this past season with Garrett Wilson and Chris olave and then Jackson Smith and chiba, who was the most productive of all three of them is going to be a top ten pick next year. So he has a lot of weapons to throw to and he will again this season, but I love the way that Strauss spends the ball. Yeah, you know, Bryce young had to deal with his weapons going down in big moments too. And still trying to create something out of nothing. You mentioned, you know, AR-15, Anthony Richardson is your third quarterback. Is there a huge separation between Stroud and young at the top and then everybody else? I think there is because we kind of know, even though it was just one season, we know what Stroud can do. We know what Bryce young can do. Big stages, big moments, big games. I've always seemed to deliver. With the other guys, again, I mentioned Richardson, I love his tools, but he started two games, Laura. He and there's talks that he's still fighting to win the job next year. So, I mean, this could be a guy that doesn't even come into the draft and maybe you only have to season as a starter. But when he gets it going, if he gets it going to the level that I know he can, we're talking about a talent that is unbelievable. It's just fun to watch what he's he's just scratching the service right now and it's fun to watch that. Yeah, absolutely. I think Florida fans are going to be upset if you don't see Richardson's star but you're right he is in a little bit of a quarterback battle with Napier taking over there. All right, with us already looking ahead to the 2023 NFL Draft. It's worth remembering that 5 teams currently hold multiple first round picks next year. The eagles, dolphins, Seahawks, Texans, and lions all have two of them. So let's bring in Diana russini, and what's the sense Diana that you get of how Jalen hurts situation is viewed around the league with those eagles having multiple picks. Yeah, the eagles ran the ball more than any other team in the NFL last year, mostly due to the fact that they've got a very athletic running mobile quarterback in Jalen hurts. Sometimes there have been questions about his accuracy. His ball placement. Teams around the league view him as a quarterback that has that potential to be really good if he can make those improvements. As for the way Philadelphia sees it, right? They essentially gave him as many weapons as they possibly could, especially on draft night as we were able to pull off that trait for agey Brown. So they're telling us that they believe in him, but the sense I'm getting is he's got to go out there this season and almost play as if this is a one year proving deal, especially known there are so many quarterbacks coming up in the draft as Todd just pointed out. Yeah, absolutely. More from Diana coming later in the show hurts was asked about all of this yesterday. He's been questioned his entire career. Here's what he said about his current situation..

"This will be known as the Bryce young gate. I mean, he was just spectacular. He was accurate. He was innovative and freelance. I mean, he was wonderful. I thought Bill O'Brien did a really good job moving him off platform, working in tempo and quick game and really doing all the telltale things, a good coordinator does to negate a talent advantage. And I give a lot of credit to Doug marrone, the other former NFL head coach who washed ashore at Alabama this off season. Because look, that offensive line was atrocious in armor in that Saturday night. And it was just a completely different unit. Nick Saban spent a lot of the postgame compliments in the line. Their preparation, their physicality, was something that was readily apparent and yeah, it was just it was a tale of two teams. It's interesting, Pete, because Doug Moroni and Bill O'Brien have come under enormous criticism. Not by you and me, but by Alabama fans throughout the season and they were the stars of the show. Let me get a quick thought on Kirby smart before we move into the utterly bizarre coaching carousel. I mean, I realized any answer here could be could be outdated in a couple of weeks of Kirby's holding up the national championship trophy, but that's a big gift right now. Yeah, I think it's interesting. Georgia had a wonderful season and they have a great team. And what's going to define Kirby smart going forward both for this season and for the rest of his tenure. And I'm a big believer in Kirby. And he spent 82% of his games, right? He's completely modernized that place brought it in the right direction. The people who don't think Kirby smart has done enough worn around long enough to see how far he's pushed that program from when Mark Rick was. But until you win and probably saw this with Bill shelf comes to mind in basketball. Jim baham even earlier in my career. You know, the excellent excellent high end coaches who haven't done it. Kirby said to me last week in Athens, you get enough at bats, one of these times you're going to get a hit. And I think that was his way of saying if we keep putting out top 5 teams, one of them is going to win it. And so what he's going to be judged on going forward here is how Georgia responds to this. Did they get enough out of that out of that defense? They didn't seem to get any pressure on grecian, hardly at all throughout the afternoon there. And what they do at the quarterback position, you'd be naive to think nobody in that Georgia dome sat there watching Bennett down 10.14 points whatever it was thinking he could lead a comeback. And does the return of George pickens give you another reason? I mean, they didn't really need to throw the ball downfield. I think they targeted Bowers that said entry is a wonderful player, 16 times. Which gives you a little bit of a window into just both your strategy and a little bit of limitations. Pete, let's turn the page to what has been going on since then. And I want to get to Ben bowls and some other coaching situations. And I've always liked many Diaz I've never really been sure he was an elite coach, but in reading and employee many deals. Exactly. Well, you know how I am about those things. But I was just in reading your stuff and just watching it from a distance. I mean, it's hard to put into words with this university did to him. I'm wondering if Mario christoval had finally said no this morning would many Diaz have still been the coach. Yes, he would have. I mean, it's that part is pretty simple. And I wrote a comment about this on Yahoo. Late last night, that's up there right now. Basically said, this is sort of the you announcing itself is back and it's bold and they have new money and they have blind ambition and quite frankly they didn't have a whole lot of tap yesterday. I've never seen a coach squirm. And I guess if I really sat bought about it, there's some other situations Houston left major apple out out the drive for a bunch of days so they can see it on the buyout a few years ago. But considering the job and the stakes and how public everything was, it was an unprecedented situation that many DS went through yesterday and I had a lot of sympathy for him just as a human. And I got dozens and dozens of texts from coaches expressing the expressing the same, but as of last night, nobody at Miami said anything to Manny about what was happening. So he just like recruited. He got a commitment on Saturday. So it was just a bizarre situation. It was poorly handled, and look, in some ways, if you're Miami fan, you want to move on into this bold bright future. You say, well, this is good. You know, we don't care about feelings. We're going to push on. And that's sort of the vibe that's been given off. But obviously, you're in this business for a while. You know people and it's just like on a personal level. That was pretty cruel. Well, they did get a big fish as a big game hunt as Scott Woodward likes to be perceived as. So what does this mean to Mario Cristobal because he did have it going at Oregon? Well, up until he ran into Utah a couple of times. Yeah, I think Paul means that Mario, Christopher's home and he gives Miami the best chance to become some new version of Miami. They are not going to dominate like they did understand burger or under Jimmie Johnson or anything to that level. But there's certainly no reason that with great leadership, which they should be getting soon from Dan radical, which becomes an AD. That they can't push forward into a new era and be vibrant and relevant. There's too much talent down there. And the brand is still too good despite two decades of trying to undercut it through poor leadership, and they made some bad coaching homes when you really go back and look through it. Randy Shannon didn't work out. Al golden was a bad fit. These pretty good coach, but he never adjusted either. There's blame to go all around. But as that time went on, the difference here is really a simple one Paul. Miami never had a lot of money as an athletic department. If somebody told me once, they told me a hundred times in the last month, money is not a problem. Money's not a problem. Money's not a problem. They have a new tied to a hospital system down there and the nuances of that are certainly above my head, but it is created hundreds of millions of revenue for the university, the university realizing that it became a big bold national brand at court because of its big bold national football program is eager and anxious to put more money into athletics to use them as that front porch. I mean, it was one of the great front porches for a generation for any kind of school. And so that's where that's where Miami is as university right now. And it'd be hard to bet against Mario Cristobal really really unlocking it. Many gifted them a top flight quarter pack who's one of the best young quarterbacks in all of college football. In Tyler Van Dyke. And I really feel like with the portal and all the talent that leaves there in the crystal ball is proven to be a high end college coach. And really got a great start and running and running program. We want a rose bowl of Oregon, he made us the bowl last year he won the PAC 12. So those are good credentials and good shops and yeah, I mean, remember that turnover change year, Paul, I think it was 2017..

"I mean, here's the thing to keep in mind, like Mac owain actually, I think one the SEC east. But they were like, everybody knew those weren't good teams. Yeah, they weren't. But here's the challenge now. If you're Florida, yeah, Georgia is loaded, but Miami is rebuilding Florida state has been in a mired in a big rebuild. And Tennessee, who used to be your big rival, you know, it still is a rival. They've been rebuilding, right? So it's like, you know, in the state of Florida, you should be you should be thriving. So I don't know. Like, I mean, this is a separate question, but the dynamics in the state of Florida, you know, right about now or the month of November. We're going to be fascinating because I think people wrote off Manny Diaz. It's not far from writing off. Mike norval, and now Florida, which if you come off the Alabama game, you're all of a sudden thinking, hey, Florida has a chance, you know, is should be riding high. It doesn't really feel like that. When you bring up Manny Diaz, I don't know if you've noticed this. Well, first of all, Manning borrow are Miami beat writer with an interesting report on Tuesday that basically administration is decided they don't want to make a change during the season. So he's probably good for the rest of the season. And then it's like, okay, this team that was two and four and seemingly hopeless. They beat Pitt, the leader in their division. First they made NC state who the committee thinks is great. Then they beat Pitt with committee also has ranked. Their last four are Georgia Tech, not good. Florida state, not good. Virginia tech mediocre, duke, terrible. I mean, it's not inconceivable they run the table. No, it's not. I mean, like, in that, and I've watched both of those games, Tyler Van Dyke, freshman quarterback, who I think if you had got truth serum on a lot of people in that program, they would have said, I think he's probably our third best option at quarterback a month ago. They would have said, obviously, the era king and then Jay Garcia. Well, both guys got hurt. Tyler Van Dyke took a minute to get his sea legs in and he has been spectacular. And by the way, those are state has a pretty good defense. And they, you know, he outshine Kenny Pickett. Last week, and they're doing it without a lot of guys, right? I mean, they have some of their best players are banged up. And I think, you know, what's interesting is about three weeks ago. I think the feeling for a lot of people was Blake James is going to have to fire Manny Diaz. And if Manny Diaz, team quits on him, which they didn't even know they had a rough one with UVA and then at North Carolina, but they turned out I think they were both games they lost by a combined 5 points before they went on this little run or mini run. But I think realistically talking to some of the same people that I think many Navarro and talk to, I think there's this, there might even be a better chance that Blake James would be forced out before many Diaz would be. If Manny Diaz keeps winning. He kind of put him on the last. That's a big issue. Blake James, the manias had to win more games, and he has so far. And look, if Pitt, so beat Pitt, they're still a game behind pit. But if Pitt loses one ACC game in Miami wins out, Miami is going to ACC title game. And not to play the juggernaut Clemson like the ACC title game has been the last 6 years. So wouldn't that be quite a turn of suddenly they're the most stable of the big three programs, wouldn't have seen that coming a year ago. Let's get to one more mailbag question. I love when we get these questions where you get to tap into your TV industry knowledge. Troy and Boise says he's become increasingly frustrated with the 12 and more preposterously 6 day windows that it takes to announce the kick-off times for games. I have planned three trips to games this year where air travel and hotels are involved and it's infuriating, not knowing what time the game's going to be. What, if anything can be done about this on future TV deals, why can't they be like the NFL where they flex a few games over the season, but announced most game times before the season with just the networks being TV. I think there is some of this though is we're drafting with the NFL and has a different model where basically CBS has one conference and Fox has another. In the case of this, I don't feel like there's as much of a split of sharing in the drafting system. It's different. Because you have different conferences, different drafting orders. There's just a lot of balls that are up in the air. You know, it's just, I don't think it's kind of the same the same model. Also there are way less TV windows that you're going to be doing. You basically have three TV windows and realistically you really only have two. You have the one p.m. Easter or the four. That's it..
