And then he walks in his last about so not only that, obviously the great game at the plate with three R B I, but then he played first base, and he He had a rough day at first base. I mean, he played well, but I mean, he had some tough plays. You had to scoop a couple balls. He had to make a player. He came up off the bag yet to make a quick tag on sh Wendell. I believe it was in the first inning. Um At some point in this game. I don't remember when it was. I felt like he never got a clean throw at first base and then He had to make pretty too pretty tough place to end the game. You know, he had to make the play on swindle ready to jump and make a nice throat, Um to McGee and then the last at bat of the game, and that's not an easy play. I mean off the bat, a half right hander hitting the ball hard to first base has different spin to it. We couldn't see that. But Floors makes it look easy over there first, so great game offensively great game defensively, get a righty back in the lineup. He's just so accustomed to pitching with traffic out there with chaos behind him, and he just doesn't really get flustered by it. So That's a pretty good quality to have. "The Giants. They go on a road trip to play three games, Of course Field where the Rockies are one of the best teams at home in baseball. They go to Wrigley Field where they haven't had a series sweep since 1995. They hardly want to game in the last four or five years. At Wrigley has been a very, very tough place for the Giants over the last few seasons and the Giants go six and O on the road trip, never lose a game and I don't know about you guys. But there were a lot of moments today where I thought, well, maybe they're just not supposed to win this game. Because I just was trying to figure out. How is this a close game the way it was played most of the way through and it was a close game and they had to fight all the way to the very end. Jake McGee. The tying run was at third base with two outs in the ninth inning, and he got through it and got the save and got the giant sweep. Well, I think you started to think that about the fourth inning after a few double plays by the Giants on offense, where they were unable to cash in and You know, John brought it up that that's just in steel. You know, as much as traffic as there was on the basis, and you don't on the year is 0 77 with runners in scoring position, so It goes to show you he's you know, even though there are some runners on base and in scoring position, he was able to pitch his way out of it like he's done all year for this Cubs team, But you expected the lead to be a lot bigger than the fourth inning. That ball goes up in the air. Slater loses it in the sun. They score, Run, You get the home run and you get the air and the collision in the fifth inning, they score another run. They just kind of hung around all game long. And, you know, Logan Web kind of got lost his rhythm after going nine up, nine down, Just dominant. Four strikeouts. You're like, Okay, Here we go again. This is going to be Give me another dominant performance by Logan Web and ultimately, they win this game, but they made it a lot more difficult on Logan Web and this giant pitching and then it should have been today so but a testament to the Giants and and what they've been able to do. This whole road trip. Just go out there and a different hero. Today it was Flores big game by floors coming off the ill and he was there. M V p today. And some days you need to score some runs and the chance did that in in Colorado when they needed to, and And they did it today, and that was also part of what you were saying. Dave was Because they had chances to score more runs than they did early on. They really had steel on the defensive. And and numerous times were a well placed fly ball or even a ground ball could have meant a run. They had so many guys on base, but they they got one in the second one in the third one in the fourth, and they just couldn't break through for any more than that. And then the Cubs capitalized on that break the ball lost in the sun by Slater. And they promptly put two runs on the board. So and then they got another break on the The miscommunication in the outfield and the ball that should have been caught. But it was right between Slater and Bryant and ended up being charged as an arrow to Bryant as they collided in the ball dropped. So, uh, but the Cubs again they took advantage of of all those opportunities. And, uh And then, finally, it was to the Tyler Rogers in the seventh and interesting to see that's the second time on this trip. Now that, uh Gabe Kapler used Rogers in the seventh, and he didn't wait till the eighth inning. And, uh so some guys have roles that are delineated. This is our eighth inning guy. This is our ninth inning guy, but, uh, capital. I think Look at that. Seven thing is With especially there was there already. Guys on base They had just like that scored a couple of runs against against Web and so he brought Rodgers and raise the game needed saving right then. And it wasn't easy, but he stranded three runners on base there and we don't think of him as being a strikeout guy. But he never got a ground ball in the in that inning. They gave up a couple of hits. And, uh you know, one was just a blue, but he struck out three guys. He needed strikeouts and he got him. And it's a good point you make, too, because I think part of also what's going on. I mean, the Giants been very flexible and using Rogers at the most important moments, he's been one of the best relievers in the league. They also have a guy Dominic Leone has sort of become their opener. In these bullpen games, and they are going to have another one tomorrow likely. Although there is possibility we could see, uh Scott Kazmir, somebody like that. Try to pitch some Sabak innings is that there are sometimes called, but, you know, it may be that the Giants were trying to stay away from Dominic Leone today to try to line him up to begin the game tomorrow. The Padres have right handed hitters at the top of the line up. It makes sense to have a A writer you trust early in the game if you're going with the bullpen game against San Diego, so anyway, there's always if you're big league manager. There's always a lot of stuff to think about and plan through and gave Kappler just continues to To mix and match and manages way through this season. Where I mean, I'm not saying he doesn't have some moves he'd like to have back but The moves he's making are working these days and it was another day where he had to make make a bunch of moves and helped the Giants win this game. But I thought the biggest move and like you mentioned not want to use Leone it What a luxury it is to have a Tony Watson on your team. We don't have Leo. We like to probably use them to open the game tomorrow. We'll so we'll throw in Rogers to get our big out in the seventh, but I know that I have a Tony Watson down there to pitch the eighth inning. To set up for Jake McGee and, um, you know, he just presents a a calm when he comes into the game because you just know that he's going to get quick out and he's going to get guys out. Did it on nine pitches today, 11 in his last outing against the Rockies in Colorado, and six up, six down, Never a doubt. Duffy had a pretty good swing of the bat lined out right to rough and left field, but Other than that it was. It was just dominance from from Tony Watson and that bridge the gap to Jake McGee. So it makes his decisions a lot easier when you have so many guys that are capable that you can go to What a week for the Giants. Pretty amazing. Pretty good. I'm I'm still sort of basking in the, uh and and really, and it started with the getaway date on national TV. One week ago today with the Dodgers in town, and and they just stayed on that role. They've been riding the wave and it's been fun to watch, and they also they kind of got Most of their team back today, with Slater and Flores returning from the injured list, and they still have a couple of guys who were on rehab assignments with Sacramento. Even now, so But it just makes such a big difference to have all of those bats in there, and he was able to parlay that into a an all right handed batting order against this lefty steel. Who have been good against everybody, but he had been way better against Left handed hitters, and the Giants didn't give him any lefties to face the whole day. Competition for a bats right now is fierce on this Giants team because when they get healthy, like they are getting healthy, I mean, they have so many options pretty cool to see. All right. "A sin and the Giants come from behind and beat the Rockies, and they have swept the series from Colorado three in a row. And this one. Was not easy. But the Giants well rested bullpen. Was a big difference in this one watching for the seventh Rogers for the eighth McGee for the night, all very well rested and all affective. And the Giants beat the Rockies, their 90th win of the year. 90 wins and 50 losses. And they put a little extra heat on the Dodgers, who have their games still to come. In ST Louis. "You look at the way that this season is unfolded, playing 1 62 after playing 60, their hands are kind of tied here. They have to use their bullpen depth to cover these nine innings to stay competitive to give them a chance. You go back to Monday night at Oracle Park. The Giants had a bullpen game when Alex would tested positive for Covid 19 a Johnny Cueto was sick on the Covid 19. I l for a day. The bullpen game. Jose Alvarez got roughed up at the start, but they cover nine innings against first place Milwaukee Brewers squad allowing just three runs That's bullpen E R a of three point Oh oh, that would lead the major leaks. You look at later this week. Jay Jackson starts on Saturday against the Dodgers. He gets roughed up. But outside of that, everyone until the ninth inning when Sami Long came in, who was the Giants? Last option? They got the job done. Darlene Garcia gave the Giants two and two thirds quality innings Bridge the gap a little bit Zac Little Caleb, Arrogant, had strong innings. John Bravia even got through a scoreless frame. But the Giants were not working at full strength. And tonight they've got their top arms available. They've got a Dominic Leone. They've got a Tyler Rogers and they've got to Jake McGee available, so they are confident they can cover nine innings. But I understand the questions about why not just dig into Triple A and bring a starter up. What about Tyler Beatty? He's on the 60 Day I l He's not eligible to pitch for the remainder of the season. So they just don't have a whole lot of options. The development that they anticipated guys like Shawn Jelly guys like Matt for his be to make during spring training. It's been a little slower. Caleb Killian was the one guy who was kind of pumping through the farm system. Caleb Killian traded in that Kris Bryant deal to the Chicago Cubs. And I think everyone in San Francisco was happy that Chris Bryant is on this cyber Giants team could be playing in October, so That's a little bit behind that decision. I know it doesn't sit well with the law Giants fans, but I do want to try and give fans a perspective of the logic The Giants are using here because I don't think that this decision was ultimately that hard to make..

College football is back. U C L A taking down LSC with the Rose Bowl. How about that huge moment for the Pac 12 Merce Bruins taking care of business against Eddie? Oh, and the Tigers That was really cool to see and the Pac 12 needed it, man. The Pac 12 needed it bad because Montana upset Washington. The ranked Washington Huskies. I believe they were the fifth ranked team to lose to an FCS opponent dating back to like 2007. When Michigan felt the Appalachian State in that iconic game that we will never forget Washington Now going down, it just I think it was the first one in five years. Fish North Dakota State beat like Iowa State or something five years ago, but Man. Great day for college football cow Also lost in Nevada. Stanford lost a Kansas State yesterday. So a tough day for the Pac 12 and in many regards, but U C L A looking like a top contender in the Pac 12 South for sure. And we will continue to keep our eyes on that. This is the last Sunday without NFL football, and I'm certainly as a red zone junkie. I'm thrilled that the NFL will be back here last Sunday without football until I think Presidents Day weekend of the weekend after this year with the extension of the sea. In 17 games now, so I am very much looking forward to talking football with you here on these airwaves in the coming weeks specifically 40 Niners quarterback situation so much to unpack in that regard, but so much you're preparing for today. In terms of this Giants Dodgers matchup like I mentioned early in the show 18 games in the books between these two tides. This season nine and nine, and the margin of error between these two sides has been also thin. It's been fun. It's been intense. There's no reason to expect that Sunday night should be any Different Walker Buehler, Cy Young candidate going for the Dodgers, and one thing that I want to get into want to hear your perspective on it. We can be our is the number second executive bullpen day for the San Francisco Giants Gabe Kapler going with Dominic Leone and as I mentioned, the reason the Giants manager is going with the right hander is likely because he anticipates trade Turner, Mookie Betts and Justin Turner and three of the top four spots. In that lineup. Max Muncy has hit second for Dave Roberts Dodgers team and so it's important to have a right hander on the mountain neutralize that part of the Dodger lineup. The Giants expected They will have most of their top bullpen arms fresh Tony Watson able to go today. Tyler Rogers able to go today, Jake McGee able to go today after all of those guys were down on Saturday night, so the Giants had a bit of a deficit there against Julio Urias having to rely on Sammy Long, Jose Quintana, Kayla Barrier. John Bravia. Some of the guys at the back end of that bullpen depth compared to what you would consider the back end of the actual bullpen and Leone Rogers. And McGee and I received a lot of questions a lot of texts as well about why the Giants aren't digging into their minor league pitching depth and bringing up a starter from Triple A or double A And, quite frankly, the reason is no one's ready. You look at this giant farm system and the top pitchers in the system Right now, The top pitchers in 2021 have been Ryan Murphy, who's terror it up, fifth round draft pick in 2020. He's up at high a Eugene throwing the ball extremely well. And Kyle Harrison, who was last year, pitching for the daily South Spartans out and conquered, he was bought out of his UCL. A commitment by the China third Round draft pick in 2020 High School Kid has had a really good year with the San Jose Giants. We're gonna get into their development with Marc de Lucchi around 11 30 this morning when we talked Its prospects. But the Giants don't really have guys at the top of the farm system they sent Matt Frisbee. Spring training invitee from double A to Triple A during the first half of the season, thought that he might be able to help this Giants team didn't happen. He got sent back to double a Sean Jelly recently got the promotion 2018 2nd round draft pick out of Kentucky. He recently moved from double A to Triple A, but he's not missing bats right now, and when you're not missing bats when you're not generating strikeouts and whiffs, it's difficult to bring a guy like that up to the major league level in the midst of a pennant race. You know the other guys the Giants had in Camp Tristen back. Out of Stanford. He was someone who the Giants thought might be able to help them at the end of the season, dealt with an injury this year and just hasn't pitched a whole lot and then Kywe. Tang was the other right hander who was in camp, but he was probably behind a map for his be Sean Jelly and interesting back. So back in spring training. Back in Scottsdale, Gabe Kapler sat down and said, If the Giants go through and burn their top 678 options they're going to need 9 10, 11 12 and those four guys to be able to help them at the end of the season and their development trajectories just haven't played out in a way where the Giants can rely on them. So when you've got a situation like the Giants do this week where Johnny Cueto needs to go on the I l After that Tuesday, start with the right elbow strain when Alex would test positive for Covid 19 still symptomatic. As of Saturday, running a fever got body aches and chills. Not gonna be able to help the Giants for at least another week. Potentially more. You have a decision to make. The decision is, Do you go to triple A and bring up a Scott Kazmir or Logan? Andrew Sick or a Matt Shoemaker, who none of those three guys, All of them have majorly experience. But none of those three guys have thrown the ball particularly well for the river cats this year in the PCL, or do you rely on a bullpen that is ranked At or near the top of the major leagues in e. R. A throughout this season to cover nine innings against a really difficult Dodgers lineup, and I don't think it was much of a decision for the Giants to make here. I don't think that Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harrison gave Catherine the coaching staff. We're overthinking it too much and saying, Hey, let's give Sean Jelly a shot here. He's not ready. I don't think they were sitting there, saying Matt Shoemaker had one good start out of three at Triple A Sacramento. He can give us four or five innings. Bring him up. I don't think that that was really a part of the calculation here. The Giants essentially are using bullpen games out of necessity. This is not something that any team wants to do..

And, uh, it gets to a point where I do think that you have to take it pretty seriously, especially at 83 games. They would have to have a pretty significant collapsed to, you know, not Not even finishing in the hunt for a blood spot. But like there's been some significant overachieving that he wouldn't have necessarily expected. The guy who pitched yesterday. Certainly being one of them. DeSclafani Tyler Rogers. Being basically unhittable would be another, uh and they've survived things like belt going down. Mont Wade comes in steps in and they have The thing that I have liked about the approach that Farhan takes is like there are these pieces that you can just plug in, like, okay, We're gonna plug rough and Flores universes, lefties and they're going to make us formidable versus lefties, and he it feels like they it feels like a very similar strategy to what the AIDS do and did. And it really it works good for them. Well, it's something that's happened in baseball for many decades. I mean, it goes back to John McGraw. So I guess the natural thing that would be is if Crossman declares he's out, just replacing with a giant and then well, then you you have the option of him or Tyler Rogers, Certainly, But here's the thing with the pictures. There are 19 pictures this season that are essentially starting pitchers. In the National League that have, I think initially that a sub three year age that's a lot of guys like squeezing all those guys in its hard I can. I think it's the same era basically and Rogers 135, and he has 21 saved, so I don't think you continued with that. I think he's legit to go Rogers this kind of in that next best group after Kenley Jansen and I would think that if a guy or two goes down that you could see him. In, um, we're talking, though. There's TJ Antone from the Reds. There's a weird one. Ranger Suarez from the affiliates has great numbers. Uh, I feel like the guys that they picked were like legit. Especially considering what you afternoon you get one that every team Um, so I would say tellers got a shot, but he's not. I don't think he's first in line is Diaz from the Mets to see you in there? Um, you know the mess. We're left with just a gram. So about, uh, but Edward, so Edwin Diaz would be another certainly formidable candidate. He's had a couple of little blips this year that push his numbers. Like into the not as good as Rogers range the areas to eight Um again, you can look at other numbers, the strikeout to walks 4 to 1. He hasn't allowed a home run in 31 innings, so he's definitely like I still think Kenley is next in line. But, uh, Diaz would be in that kind of that mixed depending on which way it would go. Okay. "It. And Wade comes in because the Giants are in a pinch at first base, And when I'm going through this morning, waking up Going through and say, OK, I don't have a week. How do we improve this team? I am now of the mindset that the Giants Are in it. Yeah, This is not just a one game situation. But last night's game, the heart that they showed the turning point that that game could well be, and we will find out And that is more of a macro statement than a micro one. Whatever happens today doesn't mean that yesterday wasn't a turning point. If the Giants are actually in this bad boy. If they are as good as I think that they can be, which means that they are going to stay in the division race for a couple more months months and ultimately probably end up as a wild card team playing the Padres if I had to guess In the wild card game. If they're that good, then they need to get out ahead of some stuff. They need to go out and add something because this bullpen is we saw last night and we have seen many nights this season. Is going to give me an ulcer is just physically painful to watch. And I know you gotta you gotta a weird affinity for that Giants fans. Somewhere deep down in places you don't talk about at parties. You like it. You love it. It makes you feel alive. But I got other stuff that I want to do. And this team is holding me hostage on a nightly basis. This bullpen it'd be one thing if they all just stunk, But I have no idea who's good on a night in night out basis with this bullpen any night total crapshoot. Last night, it was going really well. Barrenger comes in Good inning. Good if good four outs. Hotel comes in. Well, he's got something on. He's got a 071 e r a This little fella. Jake McGee comes in Holy crap. He's getting the ball over the plate. The one pitch that he throws is working against the Dodgers in Tyler Rogers, who had been the best the only good reliever It seemed for the last week or so comes in. And you can say he was done dirty by do Bonds Air and it was a bad air is bad air, especially to when you consider the fact that he was brought in as a defense of replacement at second, and he has been picking it pretty much anywhere you put him. Was bad air. No bottle. Then he gives up just a gargantuan shot and should have given up a walk off home run the next batter. If not for my talk man who's very long outfielder's glove. But then Garcia comes in. Yeah. You didn't get any strikeouts, but he seemed in control of the city. I have no idea what the hell's going on with this bullpen. They are exhausting. They're wild cards, every single one of them. It's no way to live. It's no way to live. They need to get bullpen reinforcements, huh? And I think that they need to come from the outside. My issue is I'm looking around Major League baseball we're talking about. Okay. The Giants are really good Giants have a great run differential. The giant would be in first place in all these divisions. Looking at the bottom of these divisions saying, Okay, who who stinks? I'm not seeing a lot of teams that are gonna be trading. Especially two of the Giants need to get out ahead of some stuff right? Because the Giants are gonna go and make a big splash, But they can go out and get some dudes, some guys that we could spend a little bit of time with, maybe even put him in Triple A for a minute. Women double A for a minute work with him a little bit. Get him to play giant style baseball, which is a thing, especially for pictures. Get some work within him. Brian banister hanging out. And then hey, now we now we actualize what we've taught. In July, August September, but get out ahead of it before the trade deadline because I don't think this bullpen is going to suddenly just round into form. So it has the worst war in baseball for a bullpen. Guys really first are the worst in baseball, according to Fangraphs. Now there's a couple of other metrics that that matter. None of them are good. Some of them just aren't his terrible is last place and you're looking with a 3385 E R. A With the bullpen. You go do that. That's a pretty good theory for the bullpen, and you are correct. That is a good area for the bullpen. But you go a couple of categories over here. There's something called fifth It's fielding independent pitching. That's also ballpark independent to a degree. And suddenly that number gets a lot fatter if you were to just gauge The Giants bullpen on what they do in the three true outcomes. Not good. Not good. And as we've seen in this serious and damn near every other series, baseball is pretty much just the three true outcomes. Home runs, walks, strikeouts. That's it. The Giants were to play at a normal field with a normal defense. Their bullpen. Was there it have any target E R. A closer to five. Again. There's a reason they have the worst war in baseball for a bullpen in it. You might go. What the hell's bullpen war? Well, it's what you're watching on a nightly basis and the reason that I'm getting ulcers. That's what it is. It's the immediate I don't know how they factor in the stress that I broke. Bullpen brings people's lives, but they're doing a very good job of that on Fangraphs with these statistics. Again, though I don't even know where to look. I don't even know where to look to find bullpen arms. Detroit you go Detroit's 20 and 31. They were always going to stink. Problem with some teams like Detroit, Baltimore. Detroit Baltimore, Huh Reason that those teams stink is because they're super young ever. There's no trade bait on those teams. Everybody is pre arbitration on those rosters. They're not giving up on those guys, even if they're a little bit older. Because they have team control for another 56 years. So why would you trade him? Unless you're gonna get a whole back, and the giant should not be giving up a big haul that should not be giving up even a top 15 prospect. Add a bullpen arm for the rest of the year. They shouldn't be adding in dude is gonna have to be on the roster for 567 years because they're well. They're under team control in this in that because you've got a bunch of guys in minor leagues, the Giants are not going to hurt in the bullpen. For years and years and years. This is a short term fix. They need some plugs. One thing that I do kinda. I do kind of look at and say it might be something here is the Texas Rangers, who really stink and they're an older team right there. No, not really doing the rebuild. I have no idea actually what it is the Texas Rangers are doing and we never talked about the Texas Rangers. Mainly for that reason, no one really knows what they're doing, and they're not really offending or hurting anybody. They're just out there to accumulate wins and host world serious games at ballparks that, you know, don't have social distancing that pandemic. It's what they're around for. The giant Costco in Arlington. Theme amount of conversations I've had in the last week about the two new ballparks in baseball, the one in the super suburbs of Atlanta and one in Arlington. That looks like a Costco as it pertained to the A's ballpark situation is just hilarious. The A's pretending like those ballparks are anything to desire is just completely laughable. And Tyler Rogers right now, I think it's on a pace where you're gonna be close to 100, so I know that you can keep using it. But I actually do believe that if you were to move him into the closer role, you would throw him less frequently or Maurin frequently than you're using them right now, because he's the best arm. He's the Swiss Army knife, but the Giants have and so Gabe Kapler has to rely on him because he doesn't really have Many other right handers he can trust. He's not going toe Tonto. Matt Wisler.
