"Salt lake isn't is it worth it. I don't know now if he had had a perfect game. That's a helium bucks her off. He had one walk otherwise he would have been so then. Maybe that calculus changes. I don't know i through that syria. I kind of agree with that. That a perfect game is worth keeping a guy in whereas yeah no hitter you sort of. Especially since like yeah. You're you're right that he could get hurt. He's thrown a lot of pitches. You wanna save them for the postseason This is something that you know. A no hitter is something that a bunch of random people have done. If tyler gilbert has done it can it really be that special for tyler. Gilbert is getting these. We're piling on his throne multiple no hitters in his career. Maybe we should be you know taking a dump on him the back the better stat from that game to me so the indians have been no hit three times. The season the pitcher in all three was xactly. Zach that is brutal. I mean he only gave up two earned runs like an then this game like what a you know. Talk about. no run. Support your dan we talk about. We start talking about hit support. Yeah just give me anything guys. Just looking back on it. It was actually. It's actually very very rare to have a pitcher throat. Eight innings in a in a in a share. No hitter if you go back and look at the share no hitters. This year's act eighty six Two thousand nineteen aaron sanchez through six in in two thousand eighteen walker. Bueller through six innings. And all these guys are bullpens. Went on to to continue the no hitter. Cole hamels six. Do you have to go all the way back. That was two thousand fourteen for the phillies. You'd have to go all the way back to nineteen nine hundred ninety seven so weird francisco cordova through nine innings encounter. That was ten any no hitter. So that doesn't really count. It's all back in nineteen sixty. I have it right here. Sixty seven where steve barber. Through eight and two thirds. And stu miller for the orioles came in and finish the no hitter with one out. And that's really the only time that's happened looking at the game story. And it sounds like council wasn't gonna let burns come even back out for the eighth and burns fought to pitch the eighth so he said he said i had to fight pretty hard for the eighth to come back out so i knew i had no shot for the ninth. That's interesting like he came out of the game in the eighth knowing he wasn't going to go back in. That's kind of funny. He also said If there was anyone. I would want to come out there for the ninth. It would be judge hater so you know. Increase a baseball team game. Yeah yeah i liked how the You know we. We had this crisis early in the season with the no hitters from the episode that we took our take from and it felt like it was like the hitters are just hopelessly overmatched and and You know this is a crisis for the game of baseball and think the ban on sticky stuff and maybe some other factors came into play and things kind of equalized which is basically what you predicted. Jeff that like record. He was a record. It was a record juiced by those again kind of questionable multiplayer d- You know combined no hitters whatever And at the same time it's like it's kind of cool to see those..

"66 pitches Now he is up over 90. So now the odds of him Getting to finish this game or pitch out of the ninth inning, uh, are getting kind of slim. You know, you've got to kind of average that. You know that 12 13 pitch inning. Uh, if you want to be able to stay in the game that long, and now he's up over 90 pitches. So I, It's going to be really difficult to keep them in the game even into the ninth inning, especially if it's nothing. Nothing game. Dig it, though it adds intrigue. Right, and it goes back to Manny Machado last week. We talked about it on the show when he was in a postgame kind of laughing, saying, I can't wait to see him 10 more times like, you know, that's physically impossible unless it isn't because if we can try to try them out every third day, this would be fantastic. What did he do the final month of the season? He pitched 10 times. Does he? Grover? Cleveland Alexander? No, It's Blake Snell. Uh, that would be Herculean effort that if he pitched well in his arm didn't fall off. He'd win all sorts of awards. Uh, and the credit and kudos of adoring baseball nation, But, uh, no, it's fun because we haven't really had any of these in a while on our watch that got really deep. Into the game. But, yeah, we're into a difficult times unless you get a bunch of one pitch outs and let's face it once you get up into the nineties, guys that that bat stand. It tends to stay on the shoulder a little bit longer, hoping to get to the pan. Just think about this right. Like we saw so many no hitters early on in the season rights. Oh, my goodness. We got all these no hitters going on and And they've kind of sort of just kind of dripped and dragged to a close like we've seen one. We've only seen one no hitter since the end of June. My Carmen, but really, we've seen one no hitter since the end of June. Up Until then, we had 10. So I mean, it's It's really the No hitters have slowed down for us. Yeah, everybody was crying. Oh, there's going to be like 40 of them. It's like shut out in the National Football League. You see it happen a couple of times like, Oh, wow, it's gonna be there's this good to have nots are going to be so poor so awful because look, this is the Angels. And while they're not world beaters there only two games under 500 Another disappointing season. If you want to go into the largesse of, you know, the career that has been there for my trout, and of course, Shohei Otani. Now with greatness individually, batting averages slumping quite a bit, But you know another end to Wow. What is a miserable year, but Yeah, we had Tyler Gilbert. Back on August 14th against the San Diego Padres. Other than that, I mean, we're talking about. It's been a minute here, so let's uh Let's figure out a way to even if it's a combined no hitter, which I know people hate. You know what I need chaos because then people can dragon. Oh, there it is another no hitter, and then they'll start yelling about some hot take nonsense from the NFL. It's great. All right, so we'll keep you updated on Blake, Snell and again, Really, The best thing would be for it trying to get to that magical number of whatever pitch is going to be to get him. Taken out. Kevin Cash comes out of the dugout and and he's got his arms up. Ready to take Blake Snell out of the game. All would be awesome, but we actually have an update on this game right now. So let's say hi to Ralph Ervin. Hirale something forest Ralph. Let's see. Now you've come in. You've honked up. U C l A U R in all your best you I did not say anything about U C l A stop stopping literally said not stop. Stop. It makes for a better story You've come in and you've talked up U C l a the entire night. You jinxed a couple of no hitters and teams that were winning What damage you going to do now? Well, I want to remind you, Jason that it was just last week. The Blake Snow. Was no hit through seven innings and then left the game. Remember, We're talking about him finishing it on his video games so he could try to completely No, we enter, so I mean, we did get this close, but you know, it's over. It's over. It's no no, It's not a final, The no hitters of fun. He Joe Adele, with her in Sofia with the single scoring two runs the Padres have now and or I mean, the angels have us to nothing. L a Still in the top of the seventh inning. So yes, Blake. Snell will be on twitch later. Uh, probably cursing me out. Wow. So in one pitch Blake's now lost his no hitter, the lead his shutout and now could be the losing picture. One pitch 00 game, man. He walked two guys in this inning. That's all. That's all. You got to say He didn't give up it, but that's all is it? You walked. A couple of guys walked a couple of guys. Get them on. Get him over. Adele gets them in. Hello. Oh, see, I was supposed to do the Berman's and D. Go ahead. Adele saying Hello. Do it to nothing lead right now. We already did it right ruined it now. I ruined it. I really sorry. It's my It's my fault. And TJ Adele rolling in the deep, rolled a single out to left field to drive in two runs for the lead tonight. This joke is moving at a snail's pace. See, I've infected you all with that I completely affected you all with that. Mm hmm. And TJ Adult might not be rich Paul. That was a great play to break up the No hitter. Uh, boy. Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Oh, boy, By the way, you don't want to say that you're infecting anybody with anything, man. Come on now. I'm in front of you Gotta choose you got no. You got to choose your words carefully, man. That you would you go two minutes to the sin Bin for that one. Yeah, Uh, Ralph. Thanks a bunch for stopping bite and ruining everybody's sports night. Are you just go ahead and circle those wagons? That's good, Very good. No. One circles the wagons like the Buffalo bills. See Jake The Buffalo Bills? Uh, the Jason Smith show with Mike Harmon live from the fox Sports Radio studios. So congratulations to the Angels and and again. Sorry, Blakes. Now it really wasn't our fault. Uh, this story. Was so interesting,.

"Just admit that there are a few things as weird as being a professional baseball player or professional athlete. Generally but baseball is our purview. So i'll stick to that because like if you if you again you're the you're the cgi animal hair person. That is the thing that your our school background has taken you to like. If you have diarrhea work nobody knows like and you don't even have to tell your boss like what's going on you can just say i don't feel well and your boss is almost certainly not gonna call up. A reporter so-and-so had. Diarrhea left a little earlier today. Almost certainly not so. It's just a very strange job. And the fact that they can do it to the level they do at all. It is something that i wish we marvelled at more actively because it is just so goddamn which is living in a fishbowl. Everyone is most things about you. How much money are you making. And how exactly are you performing at your job. And did you poop in an irregular. Fashion is their poop. In that fishbowl. Everyone will know about it. And yeah even though i'm saying we don't need to know we've gotten tended banter about this and i'm not sorry about that. So maybe this is kind of hypocritical of me. If we really didn't want to know that i wouldn't be calling extra attention to it but really it reflects well on herrmann marquez. If anything because as you said he transcended the situation and most of us if we encounter this challenge. We don't make it six solid innings trading in the seventh we may not make it any innings and if this reflects poorly on anyone it reflects poorly on the padres. He of herrmann marquez. On that day who really have had tough times lately. And you go from getting no hit by tyler gilbert to being shut down and losing a game to herrmann mark has mid diarrhea so that is really the the shameful part of this if there is one so maybe it is that marquez wanted it out there just to rub it in so to speak not literally but she used a different phrase. They're solid anywhere. Yes maybe there's some benefit to having that information out there just to say. Hey he was that good even though this is what he was dealing with. Yeah i mean. I i don't want to spend too much time reading. Intent into the proof related antics of the rockies. But maybe i mean maybe he maybe he did. It's not like he left the game super early. You know in today's game you leave when he did and people are going to be like. That was a solid start. You know a good effort. He i do think that the instinct to disclose at all here is a little interesting because you didn't have to at all. He could just spend like he was tiring so got pulled in and said we know about his state of his digestive tract as a reporter as someone who has to talk about baseball. I suppose it is more advantageous to me to have bud black over sharing about his pitchers pooping than to say. Have joe girardi. Who is often not disclosing actual injuries. That might have some bearing on these contests but maybe there is a middle ground where you acknowledge serious injuries. Yeah don't necessarily acknowledge the diarrhea way like i said. I think that there are things that unfortunately have such a profound onfield impact that we do need to know about them in in more specific detail but if a guy's just not feeling well and has to exit you know maybe the thing you say is that he wasn't feeling one. It's not something we expect to persist. And you just leave it at that all right crossing herrmann marquez diarrhea off of my outline today moving on so speaking of the padres and more serious ailments being suffered by pitch. We're going to say you know the padres in poop. Have you seen how they played lately as inga. yeah. I could've gone in that direction too. Yeah we kind of already talked about that but it just is kind of incredible to me that we have the padres. Starting jake arrieta asked day in age. And the dodgers starting justin brule and mitch white backing him. Up and white was great but justin brule handing the ball to mitch white in a tight pennant race. Just wasn't the way they drew it up before the season started. And those two teams if you would ask me coming into this season. Probably league leaders in rotation depth ray and they have dipped so far down into that depth that often they have not had enough starters and they have to keep bringing in starters and then those guys get hurt. I enjoyed the cole. Hamels dodgers era. It lasted about two weeks and he had never actually pitched for the dodgers. But then it's the next guy on the chain in these are the teams that seemingly were impervious to rotation issues as impervious as a team could possibly be all the cliches about how you never have enough. Pitching just have never been true because pitchers don't go deep into games even when they are regular in the bathroom and you have relievers who just are not pitching on back to back to back days anymore and so between that and between the fact that you have these historic injury rates. Just no team is unscathed and even the teams that seemed to have been built for this. We're not because no one can be built for this there just so many injuries and they have really destabilized the playoff races in a lotta ways except the not really has gotten off scot free when it comes to these injuries so i don't know what we do about this not a problem we're gonna solve on this particular podcast but it is. That keeps coming up. It's really one of the running themes of the season for me or even this era in baseball just even the deepest staffs not deep enough. I think that everything that you just said is.

"So they're but yes. He does seem if if one could sort of drop central casting for a yankees player. It does seem like joey. Gallo would come on down from from central casting so we have not yet. Talked about the tyler. Gilbert no hitter. Which i was actually moved to write about that. A no hitter guy really that one was just so improbable in every way that like part of it for me why i don't care that much about no hitters. Is that you know. Sometimes it's someone was pitching incredibly well and sometimes it's largely luck and defense and more team accomplishment than an individual accomplishment as retrieved it and so i kinda discount the accomplishments at times. And you could definitely do that with this tyler gilbert no hitter but it just one so far over into the totally improbable end of the spectrum that i completely enjoyed it for just how far fetched it was that this would happen. So tyler gilbert who probably could have been a candidate for me to major leaker segment if everyone hadn't met him through this already but he was the kind of player we tend to talk about in that segment. Because who knew tyler gilbert a twenty-seven-year-old who just made his major league debut with diamondbacks this year former sixth-round phillies pick who was then on. the dodgers. never actually pitch for the dodgers because of the pandemic and then was plucked away from the dodgers by the diamondbacks in the minor league phase of the rule five draft that aaa portion so all the dodgers had to do to keep him was just put him on the triple a roster. They didn't do that. And the diamond backs snagged him and this was his fourth major league game but his first major league start and so he joined a very exclusive club of pitchers who have pitched no hitters in their first major league. Start technically. it's four guys. At least in what used to be defined as the major leagues. It's two previous pitchers in the al or nl. The immortal pompous jones in eighteen. Ninety two and also immortal. Bobo holloman in nineteen fifty three which like howard gilbert really kind of falling short in the name department. If you're not a compass or bobo not be allowed to do this thing. But this was improbable in so many ways. That was kind of what i wrote about. Just counting the ways in which this was exquisitely unlikely. And i is just the fact that it's tower gilbert who is still never really a ranked prospect in even any individual system and took this long to get his first major league. Start for a reason although he is pitched pretty well in the minors lately. But you had that. You had the fact that he's going up against the padres who have not been all that was hoped for them but still a top ten team by batting average this year. And he's in chase field. Which is park. that really inflates. Hit totals more than almost any other park and the padres just crushed the ball in this game which was great thing and the thing that i sort of explored in. The piece was that he gave up so many balls that were hit hard and were right at people and he acknowledged as much he said it was one of those games where they were just hitting right at my fielders and the diamondbacks not a great defensive team as you expect so you would not expect them to be the club. Bid is coming up with all kinds of great fuel been performances here so it was just so unlikely like there were. It'd be six balls. Hit a hundred miles per hour or more. I think it was and there were ten balls that were defined as hard hit by. Mlb that's ninety five miles per hour plus or more in a couple more that were extremely close to that so it looked on baseball savant and in terms of the difference between his actual batting average allowed which was zero and the expected batting average allowed based on the batted ball angle and velocity and sometimes the speed of the hitter which was to forty three in this game which is basically like the league batting average so this this was like it. Based on the batted ballsy allowed. You would have this to be just another start but no it was a no hitter. And it was the biggest gap between expected batting average and actual batting average allowed of any start in the stat cast era. That went as deep as this one. He faced twenty eight hitter. So no other pitcher in those years had faced so many hitters and had such a big gap between actual and expected results and granted like expected batting average. Doesn't take into account spray angle. So sometimes it does seem to kinda overestimate the likelihood that about is going to be a hit but even so it was just so improbable in so many ways and i know that this is the year of the no hitter but it had been almost three months since the previous solo. No hitter at least and of course the batting average has climbed up as the weather has gotten warmer as sticky stuff has been banned so it had been a while so tower gobert broke the streak and also set the record for most no hitters single-season in the modern era and no one in the world saw that coming and his family was there and his girlfriend was there and his girlfriend's parents. Were there until you got the greek crowd reactions. It was just joyous so as improbable as it was. I really just reveled in the improbability of it all. I remain a sucker for crying baseball dad. I'm i'm a sucker for ben and there were tears there moments trying to hold back the tears there was succumbing to the tears or getting down to the field to say hi it was just it was it was really quite lovely all around and i don't know if you know bamba this season has not gone. It's been it's been pretty bad. And so i think that in years like that when a player can give his teammates something to feel excited about and give fans something to feel excited about it's really lovely however improbable at ends up being so it was good. It felt nice. It really did. It was good story just of nice feel-good story and one of those. You can't predict baseball hall kind of emblematic of the sport as a whole and just how variable it is and batted ball results in its fickle and you never really know what is gonna happen from game to game. I included a quote at the top of my piece which i've enjoyed in hip. Been trying to look for a place to us which is from the former outfielder. Ralph garr who said in nineteen seventy-one when you hit the ball good that's talent when nobody is able to catch it. That's luck which is true. So you need both of those things for something like this to happen. I'd want to suggest that he had no talent here. Clearly there was some talent involved as rain but the padres were really crushed. The politics nut in the right place and it was a five strikeouts. Three walk game so not really impressive peripherals. Yeah things not going. Great for the padres lightly. I mean they raided the ship in the following game..

"Going to be more of that but but you know there was saved from it because of that. I didn't go on. But that's my. That's my take on on great showtime show. One of the things you mentioned during that rant was about with regards to baseball and a no hitter. And i just want to take a minute to give a shout out and see if you happen to see this kid tyler. Gilbert for the diamondbacks made his professional baseball professional. Pitching debut is. I start ever and throws a no hitter. That's the way to come out. That's the wettest started to career right. I mean bow best part about it during cove it. He was like down on his luck bouncing around the minors doing electrical work with his dad. His dad was in the stands. Going crazy was the highlight of the show. Awesome story relations so awesome. That is a great story. That's why you never give up. Never give up dreams. Never give against san diego padres who are role in strong. So congratulations tyler gilbert. Let's get to the zone card on the undercard of the mean machine was in action against virgil ortiz. Who single handedly saving golden boy in my opinion but on the undercard we had the Alvarado twins rene felix felix gets the Tko stoppage to fifty of the first round against vows quiz. Would you think on that one. Now as you said this is on zone and the only reason i wanted to touch on the undercard because we could have went right to the main event but first of want to cover as much the weekend for the fight fans out there. So on the undercard you had felix alvarado world champion. He's thirty seven and two with thirty two knockouts at pretty good. He's a world champion and you had them. Fight allows minute replacement take was allows minute replacement. Believe it was but either way you had them fight israel vasquez now vaz's questions thirty four years old and he's ten five and two and he's lost five of his last six fights and out of those losses the only one that a one out of those fights only one that he did win was to a nine and twenty two fighter. I so the point. I'm making is. He doesn't belong in a frequent ring. And this is what bothers me. This is where you get injuries and god forbid fatalities way. You have mismatch people. And i've talked about this on other podcasts. Not that long ago. Ken where what are we have commissions for why we have commissions that quite often a paid their salaries by us the tax pays. Why do we have commissions if they can't commission properly if you can't know enough to say hey as as thirty four years old ten five and two five. Who's last guy. Pete was nine and twenty. Two shouldn't be fighting. Feel example rondo world champion. Thirty seven to thirty. Two knockouts shouldn't be happening. Sparks and lex box wreck. Has it wrong. He lost to the nine and twenty two. Miguel del via any any beat. Oh nine into louis quinta box. No you're right. He gave one hundred percent. Right is one of his wins was to a guy who has a one so listen the people getting the point out there were making. I mean how does this guy get in a ring with somebody as good as phil alvarado and what happens well. Do i have to tell you the rest. You don't like i said to you before you don't have to be the mason credit to know what's common he got knocked out in one round down one round. I mean again. This is where we get this when we get problems is where we get. Injuries is where we get people hurt. It's a tough enough. Sports inherently dangerous. But you don't need to be putting guys in to fight with top fighters when they don't belong in there. You don't need to do that. We gotta be better. And this is what i screamed about all those years on. Espn none of the reason why. I'm not qualified. But i was trying to protect the fighters helped sport. And you know the great my friend to great lady bird sugar used to say teddy. Boxing keeps giving himself so many black guys. They are now the cyclops and he that line with bert sugar. The late grade bird sugar. He he was he was right on the money. Right on the money. I mean like boxing has keeps shooting herself in the foot. I mean rarely. You'll put great fights on the great fans you guys will be there because you love to sport as i loved the sport but we don't love this part of it. We don't love when administrators twin executives screw up and administrators throat up and when the alphabet organizations corrupted and when commissions don't behave like commissions. We don't love that part of it. We don't because that part rules to support endangers sport cripples the sport hurts the fighters. So it hurts you guys too so i just had to say that. That's why brought that up. And then his brother has brother fought raja. Gutierrez ford gutierrez. I believe it was a trilogy. So let me give my breakdown of that fight because it was co feature it did did go twelve rounds and first of all. I want to give credit. I wanna give credit. Because i knocked the crap out of people when i think they should be knocked the crap out of and i i will hold them. Hi.

"I'm looking at it right now. Yes yeah hope for. The san luis brown's was thirteen fourteen years old. That was a big deal back then and so it was his first start. It wasn't his major league debut. Who's at column. Yeah yeah it was major league debut. Noah's major league debut on april eighteen. Th he threw his no hitter on may sixth. You mean he was in relief or something. He had pitched in a couple of games in relief. Oh okay the amazing thing about him. That was his only year bold. Bobo holloman that was his those is only season as a big leaguer. Yeah that yeah. That's but yeah. He pitched in relief a handful of games. And then he got to start pitch. No hitter is more or less. Okay now i like that. Make comment on Bringing back but we're arrow springing up Now maybe you won't agree. But i'd like to see him play. Shortstop move farmer over third base. Because i'm tired of seeing and yeah i'm tired of watching him strike out and blow bubbles and Maybe i shouldn't say this about stop does but to me. He looks like he's overweight. Now he does he looks he looks back yeah. He looks bigger than i remember him being. I don't disagree with you. I mean look i. it's interesting. They played barreiro a little bit at third base right before he got called up. They say he's gonna play a little of everywhere. I don't know that they're going to sit. Both soir says and moussaka. So i think they want us to play against righties but the reality is he's been one of the worst offensive performance in baseball this year. By the way your guy your guy bubba one thousand nine hundred fifty three. He appeared in four games as a relief pitcher before he threw his no hitter and tyler gilbert appeared in three games in relief for the diamondbacks this year before. He threw his no hitter on saturday night. Yeah haldeman pitch for the st louis browns and that was like a triple. That was the yankees troy farm team. Then oh yeah man. I get it. Yeah bobo holloman i well. I did not think. When i woke up today that i was going to be getting a call about bobo holloman. I appreciated the opportunity to talk about him nonetheless. Okay thanks you're welcome. I don't know that they're going to sit. Both mushtaq is.

"Actually. Is the nfl going too far to curb taunting. Tony i understand you know this is like when when basketball has those lille those many edicts from the office you know from the league office points of emphasis going. We're gonna call more traveling. We're gonna call more charging and then they'll do in the regular season. This guy flexes a little bit after. He drove the pile with his legs. Like eight yards. I mean i thought that was pretty cool. He gets up and he gives a little flex and they call penalty on him. I know the league doesn't want what we see in the regular season all the time. Which is people flexing and going crazy and spinning the ball after every play and they used to call it then they stop and other back to calling it again tone. I don't wanna see flexing after every carey. I hate this stuff. you know. i'm the old man. Get off my field turf but you may feel differently. So i think taunting is bad. I don't think it's defensible. I didn't particularly think that this was taunting. We live in an era. Now we're all the leaves want to be on social media and attract attention so in baseball they tell you pretty much. It's okay to do a backflip in the nfl. They tell you it's okay to celebrate the end zone and in basketball somebody stares down somebody else on every single basket. I don't think you could have mixed messages. I thought this was just a proud accomplishment. As you said that the kid goes fourteen yards and he carries nine people on his back as an undrafted rookie and he ends up losing a yard because of this particular penalty. I don't think that's fair. It didn't seem reasonable to me. Bigger picture don't you want less flexing every sunday all day long in in you know a little less in every sport here we go agree. How long were you remember tyler gilbert for throwing a no hitter in his first major league start. I mean i'm remember gilbert in his first start tony. It's only four. People have done that you know in. The lhasa was nineteen fifty three. So i don't remember any of the other no hitters this year. Two of them were thrown by one by the white sox won by the cubs in my own town. I don't remember them. I'm gonna remember this kid because it was his first start. He's twenty seven years old. Yes i'm good remember it. It's not even the only one by the diamondbacks bax this year. If you can count which major league baseball apparently cannot remember this for a long time. It's the only one i'm going to remember. That's great because i'll tell you a two story. Our producer matt kelleher told me about this story around noon and i didn't know who he was. I didn't know it throwing the no hitter. I'd never heard his name. It was a late night game. I missed the entire game. So and also this is not like stephen strasburg debut was the overall number one pick and hello. He strikes out four team. I'm gonna give you the names of the other people that have done this straw. You know we did. Ted breitenstein in nineteen ninety-one version. Grade school you boy bumps jones in eighteen ninety two. Sorry and then bobo holloman in one thousand nine hundred fifty three so you gotta sting a bunk. This and abobo not a more volvo could have been tight i. I don't remember any of those. So many no hitters thrown by people who are themselves not great pitchers as i start games. I to tyler i start. You couldn't remember to somebody through one in his first. Start your blessing. Yeah don't do you remember bump this no you don't maybe more a minus five.

"We've got four of them one a day since the last show which was a terrific show pete alonzo on thursday the polar bear with the second of his career friday the catcher that i gave away one of my league foolishly dolton var show named after darren dalton and he caught the no hitter by tyler. Gilbert's saturday the player in the world. Shohei otani i'm sorry nobody else. I think he's missed. I mean unbelievable to power the speed and also the pitching. Maybe he's the number one pick next year. Maybe he is announced. Sunday tasker hernandez. Who's kind of in the shadow. Of mr vlad guerrero and bilby shit and marcus semi but task is fantastic season. Now he's rostered everywhere. I'm sure i don't need to look that up. But you know you could have made the case before the season i think. Okay i. maybe maybe i'm wrong on this. But people view tae oscar hernandez lured gurriel similarly right handed power bats that were supposed to be like thirty homerun guys but not on base guys and task hernandez batting three thirteen. And lord escorial has a three hundred on base. So they're very different right now but it's weird because neither of them take walks so tasks getting away with his lack of plate discipline. And i've got korea on a league and he ain't your thoughts. This whole conversation is painful. Because it recalls my labor failure to get to oscar hernandez and settling for laura's correal coleman wolf coltman wolfman ta oskar i think it was twenty one versus nineteen for. I got gorilla lot more problems with that team than anything. But i liked a lot of metrics that saw tasker coming into the season. Yes i know. He's aggressive doesn't hit traditionally walk all that much but he does have a good approach. It's kind of like the jd martinez. He also wasn't aggressive smear at the plate and turned himself into a big time power baton as you said. The batting average is playing a little bit of luck. But he's legit he certainly is. I mean it's one walk a week and then there's the typical right handed power bat problem with the platoon splits I mean four forty three slogging against roy. That's nothing special there. But he's killing left knees and they're going to a whole lot left these divisions so you know. I'm a little disappointed what alice applied this season. Those were the combo meals now. We're gonna sing again. It's.

"This year. He leads the league by a wide margin as second-place alex race in saint louis with twenty-seven a few guys with twenty six right behind him liam hendriks and rossy l. iglesias and then a handful of guys with twenty five as well so that's just a brief update when it comes to statistics. Now let's look at the standings update. Have we had any dramatic changes in the past week. Well starting out in the american league you have. The tampa bay race are leading the american league east by three games now over the boston. Red sox and it is four in the loss column. But don't look now because the new york yankees are only five and a half fountain east in a game and a half behind the red sox only one in the loss column so the yankees certainly make bush tampa bay seventy one and forty seven boston. Sixty nine fifty one. And then you have the yankees right there at sixty five and fifty. Two boston has won three straight games. The yankees have won a couple of straight and then you have toronto seven and a half out at sixty three and fifty four so those teams still doing very well. It's amazing that toronto's in fourth place because they're run differential of one hundred twenty seven is the best in the division so the yankees in third place only plus nineteen but that's certainly dramatically increased here over the past couple of weeks because they have gone seven in three in their last ten but tampa bay holding steady seven and three in their own right even after lost two straight still going seven and three in their last ten so tampa maintaining their lead in the american league east. But that wild guard conversation which we'll get to here in a minute is certainly becoming more and more fascinated more congested in the american league in the american league central. The white sox continue to run away with this division. They are the only team with a positive run differential. And that is that plus one twenty six they are sixty eight and fifty overall and next behind them is the cleveland indians who are two games under five hundred so everybody else. In the american league central under five hundred the twins have finally gotten out of the basement. They have passed. The kansas city royals again. That royals team they were a good story early on but certainly have not been able to keep it up here as the season has progressed so it definitely looks like only one t making the playoffs out of the central. I think we can say that pretty safely here with six weeks remaining in the season now in the american league west you have the houston astros. Seventy and forty seven so the race in the american league for the best record certainly is between houston tampa in chicago with houston a half a game behind tampa bay rays and then chicago. Three games behind tampa. It's alternately. who will get home field advantage throughout the entirety of the play offs. Which becomes a big deal when you get to the american league championship series. Of course you're going to want to have home field there in that seven game set. So that's an under the radar race to watch in the american league west the athletics two and a half games back of the astros. The athletics are eight and two in their last ten with the astros. Only five and five so oakland getting right back into things here. Picking up three games over the last week and a half to close the gap to only two and a half out west. Y'all so had the seattle mariners sixty three and fifty six. They're eight games out in the division. There are a bit of an anomaly with a minus forty seven run differential only five and five in their last ten so like. I said they're still fighting for that. Wildcard spot but certainly look to be on the outside looking in so when you look at the wild card. You have oakland in boston. They are tied at the top tied. Basically because boston is played two more games than oakland based on winning percentage. Oakland is at the top of the list. And you have three other teams really in contention. The new york yankees are two and a half games out of the second wildcard but only one in the law school and behind boston to behind oakland for that first wildcard spot. Then you have the toronto blue jays. Three games out in the loss column. But four and a half back overall and then the seattle mariners. They just mentioned five and a half games out and five in the loss column so it looks to be a five team race here for the wild card with oakland boston. New york toronto in seattle all still having a chance. I mean we've seen teams like the phillies. Make up five to six games over the course of a week. So if one of these teams gets hot winds eight nine ten games in a row. There's certainly still in it and could certainly make the playoffs now in the national league and the national league east the atlanta braves are now in first place. They remain hot. they've won three straight. They are eight and two in their last ten. The philadelphia phillies are now a game behind them at sixty one and fifty seven two and four week this week for the phillies against the reds and dodgers put them back into second place six and four overall in their last ten and the new york mets. Who lost once again. Sunday night to the dodgers now fifty nine and fifty eight overall two and a half out behind the braves too in the loss column but only three and seven in their last ten so continuing to struggle and kind of flounder down the stretch here but they can certainly turn it around. I mean two and a half games. That's one three game sweep against the braves from being in first place so as bad as things look right now in new york..

"Hopefully you're mondays off to a great start here going to be another fantastic week across major league baseball but let's take a second to look at where we're at right now. Let's dive into some statistics. Follow it up with some standings let you guys know what exactly is going on here. As we've hit august sixteenth about six weeks away from the conclusion of the regular season so diving into some individuals. Statistics your home. Run leader continues to be shohei ohtani. He now has thirty. Nine home runs on the season. He looks to be the first one to hit that. Forty mark here in the next couple of days. Can he reach fifty on the season. Coming up i think so. I think ten home runs. Eleven home runs here over. the final. Six weeks is not out of the realm of possibility. And it's definitely a story line to watch to see if anybody will be able to reach that fifty mark in second place. Is vlad guerrero junior with thirty five but the real story line here has to be battiste with thirty three home runs. He has thirty. Three home runs in eighty eight games. So that's almost a sixty to sixty five home pace over one hundred sixty two because otani has thirty nine and one hundred and thirteen games. Vlad guerrero has thirty five and one hundred sixteen so tatty savon thirty three in as little as eight games is certainly very very impressive to be in that top three and i just hope he stays healthy one of these years because he could potentially push that sixty home run mark if he continues to develop and hit the long ball like he has so far this season. Your leader in is raphael. Evers of the boston red sox. He has eighty nine. Is vlad guerrero junior. Second with eighty-eight. Jose abrego now up the list. He is tied with shohei ohtani for third place with eighty six and then. Hey zeus. aguilar down. In miami rounds out the top five with eighty four. Your top average leaders. Michael brantley in houston hitting three thirty two this year. He continues to just crush baseball's a professional hitter. He does only have eight home runs. She does have twenty eight doubles extra base hit power. He hasn't left the yard very much this year. But certainly hitting three thirty two very impressive for michael brantley. You have cedric molins. In second place tied with your agree l. at three eighteen so houston has the top two average leaders with recently and guri yell at the top of the list. Trade turner also hitting three eighteenth. So he's tied right there for second place and then adam frazier. Now of the san diego padres hitting three sixteen vlad. Guerrero has dropped down all the way to seventh place. It in three fourteen as he was in contention for that triple crown. It certainly looks like he's gonna finish somewhere in the top. Five or ten in each of those statistical categories your leader in doubles market simeon out of toronto with thirty three zander. Bogart says thirty. Two along with jamir candle lario in detroit. Rafael devers jd. Martinez jesse winkler all tied in second place with thirty two so definitely a race there for the doubles crown. So far this season your leader in hits adam frazier one hundred and forty three cedric mall in second place. One thirty nine. And then david fletcher for the anaheim. Angels out there with one hundred thirty eight certainly very impressive as well when it comes to ope flag guerrero junior just ahead of shohei ohtani with bryce harper in third place at nine eighty one. So harper twenty one home runs twenty six doubles but only forty nine. Rbi's definitely an outlier there when it comes to arthur statistics and guys not getting on base in front of him certainly have led him down this year as only forty nine rb is in ninety seven games. Not where you want it to be if you're a phillies fan. But it's not due to a lack of production when it comes to extra-base hits for bryce harper on the pitching side of things. You're era leader walker. Bueller now leads the league in era at two point. Zero nine brandon would drift in second place at two point. one eight. his teammate. Corbin burns two point two three lance lynn of the white sox is tied with freddie peralta in fourth place at two point two six. So milwaukee three out of the top five when it comes to the title with three guys under two point two six which is certainly another reason why you don't wanna face them when it comes to play off time your leader in in win so far this year. Kyle hendricks in. Julio your reassess each have thirteen on the year next is chris bassett walker bueller and brett suitor with twelve each rounding out the top five their innings pitched that goes zack wheeler with one hundred sixty two walker bueller right behind him a hundred and fifty four and two thirds and then chris bassett with one hundred and fifty so those guys go and deep into games every start have certainly been very impressive. Zack wheeler also leads. The league in strikeouts with one hundred eighty seven garrett cole next on the list with one hundred seventy six zack wheeler does have three more starts than garrett cole. Due to coal missing some time with corona virus other injuries so strikeouts per nine innings. Garrett cole has him but total strikeouts. Zack wheeler still at the top of the list. Corbin burns max scherzer and robbie ray round out the rest of the top five when it comes to saves the bullpen mark melanson and san diego. Thirty four out of thirty.

Vlad guerrero shohei ohtani michael brantley adam frazier tatty savon Jose abrego cedric molins guri yell baseball Trade turner otani jamir candle lario Rafael devers Martinez jesse winkler houston bryce harper cedric mall david fletcher

Study Finds MLB Umpires Show Racial Bias Against Non-Whites

"There's also a report out there that i haven't seen a lot of traction so far but i i wanted to bring it up to you guys. I don't want to spend a ton of time on it. But a recent study done by. Hank snowed it. A student at claremont mckenna suggests that mlb discriminate against non white players the study used balls and strikes data from the past thirteen seasons to determine the rate of missed calls against certain players snowdon determined which should be strikes. Were called balls in which balls were aronie. Asli called strikes and then looked at the race of the empire batter and pitcher and what snowden found was that umpires made more advantageous calls when their race was the same as the person receiving the advantage. The difference amounts two point zero three percents which well small can be significant over the course of a single season so point. Three percentage points Snowden estimates that umpires called eighteen thousand pitches differently over the thirteen year period. Which is a little more than a thousand changed calls per year. Any individual player might only receive a handful of these this season but for black players in the league already struggling against discrimination. Any additional barrier is a significant problem.

"That early podcasts. That might not what was our first one this year but We both had the braves. Now they're in. I at least as we record this. You had the astros. I had the as their dog fighting. It's one of those two. We both had the white socks. I mean the only team It might be missing. We missed on the giants who might be the every he missed on everybody midst on but we didn't have them be fair now so anyway we are great. You're not going to say it. But i will. I'm gonna. I'm gonna do the ricky and you're going to be more like Tyler gilbert. I'm going to be more like ricky henderson. We are great so Anyway teams game just had to get that in there. You know I'm more of a bull. Durham person you know. You got to have an imagination to really appreciate fully. The field of dreams i liked. It was like pretty cool. It was an interesting plot and You know it was. It was a good movie. No question about it. But i'm more of a bolder. More of a realist kinda guy. That's not even that realistic really. I'm sure but it'll sir. It's a lot closer but You know as far as the game goes you know. I love the guys walking out of the cornfield. I thought that was cool. But really what made it for you. And i at least You and me is the fact that it was a great game. 'cause we're really game. It was so exciting. And so many home runs in the cornfield and then the stanton homerun given the yankees the lead and then the tim anderson. Who's offen- tastic cal. colorful personality. And he knew he got it as he said and hitting the walk-off game winner so that's redundant but the game winner and that's what made it for us. And i would like to see it again if they can duplicate that. I know that david accidentally revealed that the cubs are going to be in it before. Trying to backtrack. But i'd like to see the cubs and the cardinals two teams out there in the in the midwest Play and two rivals will see what what the actual game is mike. She'll doesn't give up yet. We don't know if it's really the cardinals but we like to see it again and You know game made it for me just like you. I think they'll have to get big shoes to fill. Whoever is in that game. I'll tell you real quick. I can put myself in. Tim anderson shoes from an emotional standpoint. You just finished watching the the yankees hit two bombs guys hopping over at a gate. And i'm sure that made him feel subtype ways when he finally hit that ball on and he knew what was gone. I i enjoy the kind of could as you said colorful attitudes these that these guys have. I truly enjoyed. It was fun to see him. Go around and bazars fun to see him hype like that perfect game at the perfect place. That's more relief for this week..

"Three guys on the cy young conversation. You got burns peralta all of these guys up there. Nobody wants to face them. So they're urgency's just a bit lower based on where they're at in the standings ultimately you know it does look like they're gonna make the playoffs and be able to bring the noise when it comes to the postseason and number eleven the oakland as they have a fifty one percent chance as of right now to make the playoffs. They're starting to run out of time right. They got cost control. Matt olsen chapman as well. Those two guys are in their prime and not making huge money. Which makes this year a little bit more vital. Also have houston. That isn't going anywhere. Seattle's up and coming in this division so you continue that with the as in how they could look in the future. Their lack of postseason success over the past couple of years certainly makes the playoffs important this year. So if they were to make the playoffs. Winning in advancing nat urgency would be very high but making the postseason. It's another positive sign for oakland. And it looks like they're going to be back dancing in the playoffs and number ten. You've got the tampa bay race. I mean they're right there at the top of the american league east. They're looking to defend their american league title. If they had tyler glass now. I would certainly like their chances a bit more. They have an eighty five percent chance to make the playoffs so the raise the urgency not extremely high having won the american league dealing with injuries with glass. Now they don't have a huge fan base down there in tampa so the pressure to to really perform. I don't think is as high as some of these other teams ahead of it on the list. The houston astros. They're gonna make the playoffs. They got a ninety five percent chance but the boys to be a villain this october. And they're going to lose some pieces this off season carlos correa. Most importantly at the shortstop position looks in for a big payday. He's turned down some extension offers from the astros so some of their main core could begin to turn over after this year which i think puts them a little bit higher on this list then most and number eight the boston red sox again. I mean. Nobody thought boston would this good back in march but still in the playoff push their god. They got chris sale back here over the past couple of days. So he's going to be a nice addition coming down the stretch. They haven't wanna playoff game since winning it all back in two thousand eighteen so boston being a huge baseball market puts a little bit of pressure on these guys now that they've put themselves right at the top of the opportunities and number seven the la angels. They got a one percent chance but man the urgency has to be there. Shohei ohtani have an mvp type season. His war i believe is at seven point. Six next highest on the list is right around six. So he's just been above and beyond. They did have the injury to mike trout. Where things just can't come together. But mike trout continues through his prime. Never having won a playoff game and man they just time is ticking out there for the angels to put it all together a number six you got the cincinnati reds there at thirty three percent chance to make the playoffs last year was supposed to be the year for the reds They did reach. The national league wildcard game but did not advance any further and the lineup is getting a bit older right. Joey votto having a fantastic second half but he's no spring chicken The reds they really haven't had anything to click pitching hitting all at once. syrian vodka. Coming down castellanos. Winker all of these guys. There's certainly pressure on them to make a run here coming down the stretch and number five you got the new york mets. Their playoff percentage points at fallen all the way to about twenty percent jacob degrom carlos carrasco noah syndergaard all dealing with injuries. This year the graham shut down for two more weeks doesn't look like he's going to be back. At least until the middle of september at the earliest syndergaard coming often injury carrasco getting hit around by the dodgers on sunday. Night so new york not out of it yet but all the off season moves. They made lind door has been injured so they added. All of these pieces. Spent all this money and the roi there return on investment does not look like a postseason. Berth here even though that was certainly the expectation this past off season for the people or the team down there in queens and number four you got the blue jays third about fifty percent chance. They signed george springer this off season. The questions were had they done enough to catch the yankees. Well they're right there with the yankees looking up at the red sox in the race. They also added burrito set the trade deadline now. He's got some team control so next year. Urgency could continue to increase with this offense continuing to come into. Its own some of these younger guys. Bouchette vlad guerrero starting to turn into their prime. But i do think. There is some urgency based on the moves. They've made up their in toronto. Now number three. You got the new york yankees. They have a fifty percent chance to make the postseason and look at what they did at the trade deadline. There are certainly feeling the pressure. They know they needed to make a move. They added joey gallo. They added anthony rizzo. They need pitching in new york. They need this rotation to come through garrett cole going through a bit of a down spell here so the yankees certainly feeling the pressure and they made moves at the deadline to ultimately get back in the race. And this is what they've done but i think Yankees fans would certainly not be happy with missing the postseason when they were favored to win the american league coming into this year and number two. I got the philadelphia phillies. Their playoff percentages right around fifty percent. They have the second longest playoff drought in the majors. Going back to twenty eleven. Only the seattle mariners like we discussed to have a longer Postseason current running drought and with bryce harper in year. Three in philadelphia..

"Fewest combined in the history of major league baseball when it comes to combination of pitcher and catcher further. No hitter this was also tyler gilbert's first complete game at any professional level even at the minor league level throughout his four or five years in the minor leagues. He had not throwing a complete game. His previous career high was eight innings. And he did so as a member of the phillies organization in two thousand sixteen when he was with the lakewood blue claws which is the level a single level for the fight and fills so he had eight innings in twenty sixteen so his first career complete game at any rank in the professionals. A goes as a no hitter as well certainly fascinating another little tidbit there. So man all the odds in just the probability of this happening had to be below one percent just with all of these different stats and combinations. Make it that much more impressive. It was the third no hitter in diamondbacks history joining edwin jackson in twenty ten and randy johnson. Who threw a perfect game back in two thousand and four now. Both of those games also took place on the wrote so gilbert's no-hitter was the first thrown by diamondbacks pitcher at chase field jackson's game came at tropicana field against the race. And then johnson's perfect okay against the braves at turner field so the first home no hitter not perfect game. But no hitter for gilbert there in diamondbacks history. It was the first time the padres have been no hit since two thousand eighteen when the l. a. dodgers combined for a no hitter multiple pitchers in that outing combined for a no hitter against the padres. And it's also the fact that the diamondbacks are not very good. I mean this year. They entered the game. Forty three games under five hundred. Which is the worst mark ever by a national league team entering a no hitter. The only american league team to be more games under five hundred was the as back in nineteen sixteen the as at that point where twenty five and ninety one. My goodness gracious. So what does that sixty six games under five hundred for the as when bullet joe bush threw a no hitter that year against the indians so the second worst record when it comes to differential wins and losses for the diamondbacks as well in a no hit bid the twenty nine wind difference between the padres. Diamondbacks is also the fifth largest difference between teams that were no hit and had a no hitter thrown against them. So like i said a very bad team there in arizona against a good team in san diego the fifth most The fifth highest difference when it comes to victories there as well. And it's not like gilbert was popping up all day either right. The padres made hard contact. Ten times on batted balls against gilbert and the definition for hard contact is an exit velocity of ninety five miles per hour or greater off the bat with the hardest ball. That was hit at one hundred. Twelve point to it was a line out for manny machado but those ten hard hit balls are the second most by any team who has no hit. Since the stat cass era became available in two thousand. Fifteen the brewers had eleven hard hit balls against alec mills back in twenty twenty for a no hitter so again just hitting bosshard right at people all day and the old sane right you gotta hit them where they ain't you don't have to hit it hard. Be got hit them where they ain't when it comes to getting hits offensively also joe. Musk grove. Who threw the first no hitter in padres history earlier. This year was now. They starting pitcher for a team. That was no hit. So he's been on both sides of the no hitter. He's the twelfth pitcher ever to throw a no hitter and have one thrown against him in the same season the first time since two thousand and fifteen when it happened against jake arrietta so a team whose thrown a no hitter and ben no hit in the same season. That's only happened six times. Since two thousand and ten you had the twenty ten raise the twenty twelve mariners. The twenty thirteen giants in the twenty fourteen phillies also having that happen against that and as well as just some other crazy facts. That have come out as well as that. Because gilbert was in triple a. last year and ultimately did not have a season due to the corona virus in the pandemic. He was working as an electrician for his dad. So this guy. One year ago working as an electrician goes to this year to throw a no hitter. So imagine being one of those homes or businesses where tyler gilbert recently hooked up the electricity and now he's on the other side you're watching him in the big leagues throwing a no hitter. So just a crazy crazy across the board. Well how did gilbert do it. I mean looking at baseball savant. It's really fascinating as well. His pitch selection. He threw a cutter it. So i threw one hundred and two pitches. Total forty eight of them were cutter twenty-eight were sinkers or two seam fastballs and nineteen. We're foreseeing fastballs. So that's quick math. That's ninety five out of one hundred and two pitches. We're of the vast fastball variety whether it was a straight for seem to seem with a little bit of run or a cutter moving in towards the right handed hitter and gilbert earned twelve called strikes or swings and misses with his cutter and eleven with his fastball. So he was basically use in both sides of the plates work in the fastball. Two different ways. I and he was able to get twenty out of his twenty three swings and misses or called strikes from his cutter his sinker. So the padres just couldn't basically figure out out of his hand which way this ball was gonna go was it gonna run was gonna cut ultimately what was taken place there so it's just fascinating too when you look. At some of the expected hit rate you put a percentage on so many machado's hundred twelve liner to left field. That type of contact has an expected batting average of eight ten so eighty one times out of one hundred. If you hit a ball that hard on that angle it ends up being a particular style of hit. Even tommy famous game ending lie now came off the bat at ninety one five and had an expected batting average of seven fifty but ultimately went right to the center fielder so luck was certainly on his side. A little bit but again just tim working zone pounding the strike zone. Absolutely fantastic for tyler. Gilbert so gilbert joins carlos road don. John means wade miley spencer. Turnbull corey kluber and the combined efforts by the chicago cubs for the eighth. No hitter of the twenty twenty one season and man just looking at his stats in the minor leagues. He's always been effective. He's got a career minor league. Er a of three point. Three seven pretty much. Every year is right around the three mark now. he's thrown twelve and two third scoreless so far this year. Of course the nine scoreless over the weekend and a couple of other Outings when it came to relief appearances earlier this year but man shadow to tyler gilbert for what he was able to accomplish this weekend and earlier in the day saturday it looked like we were going to get a different no hitter. The philadelphia phillies had held. Cincinnati through seven innings to know hits left-hander matt moore when six hitless innings and it was his longest outing of the year. He was ultimately taken out after the sixth innings. Just because he really hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt to continue to go through the lineup hector nearest came in through a hitless seventh-inning before ultimately archie bradley allowed a solo. Home run in the top of the eighth inning to lose the shutout and the no hitter. So i was falling along to a no hitter in the phillies game and then all of a sudden later on in the evening we had ourselves another one taking place out in arizona with tyler gilbert so the year of the pitcher continues across major league baseball with the eighth no hitter and we now have about six weeks to ultimately get one more before they can set the all time record of nine no hitters for one season and right now going all the way back to eighteen eighty four some would say this is the most anyway when it comes to major league baseball but man tyler gilbert congratulations. I just. i don't know what type of an encore you can throw up after this one throwing.

"Mlb insider john hayman and former major. Leaguer tony gwynn junior. All past the halfway point in august races are starting to heat up. We got three car races and the nationally east and all of a sudden things may look a little bit brighter for the red sox in the american league east. We're going to get into it all but first let me welcome in my original partner. John heyman john. How you doing man has been time since we've been. I wanted good. i guess. Give me the break To do the deadline. I appreciate that dylan. Thank you very much. It's great to be back with you. Tony and Let's talk some baseball. Let's do it well. I i should start with Out west with padres who are all of a sudden not playing that well and Our victim to the eighth no hitter of the season tying a major league record tyler gilbert in his first outing in the big leagues throws a no no against the padres in. This has been phenomenal. This your john is see the amount of no hitters thrown We off to a really fast pace it slowdown down but nevertheless It is tied in august. Incredible and give gilbert credit I mean he's twenty seven years old. This is the debut amazing I guy to throw a no hitter in his debut since bobo holloman i mean that's before your time. Tony and believe it or not. This is even before my time. So by eight years before i was born bobo. Holloman through threw a no hitter in his debut so great story. it's good to see The diamondbacks have a nice day. It's been a rough year for them. Obviously but Was fantastic and by the way before we continue on. I've got a little quiz for you. Tony what are these. four names. Mean to you of overlander sanchez. millwood and beckett. I they all all on the opposing side of their no hitters. You're you're a good memory. You're very smart. We Dylan i did. Well he dylan actually did. The research didn't do anything but You have a good memory. Yes four your four different teams milwaukee san diego dodgers in phillies. You were on the wrong end of no hitters so you're quite familiar with no hitters. Too familiar with no. John get i can i can say at least. On one of those i had no participation in orlando. When we were. I was a rookie. It was a in the in. The american leagues were playing with d. h. So there was no need for pinch-hitter at that point and quite frankly the way he was thrown it I was glad. I didn't get his shot that day but manager. He would gone three for four that again. Big mistake manager was martin who it was. It was ned yose. Yeah that was That was that's very possible. I could have got some knocks. But i wasn't a part of the other three sanchez The the combined no hitter would millwood in company with the mariners and There was the other one was the other one. Yeah i participated in all of those. I can't i can't slide away knows but it's still accomplishment to be in those games anyway from where no doubt no doubt But certainly tyler. Gilbert's is gonna be the coolest of no hitters so far because as you mentioned. I started dad's in the crowd families in tears as he gets it done. And i and i heard him say On a on a on a show the other day that he didn't actually have his best stuff. He credited his teammates to his to to show you the type of character credit his teammates for marketplace. Because to be quite honest potteries hit some balls. Are that game. It just they head to head on your head right yeah. They're running into bad luck as you've seen lately with injuries and other things so good for the young man to to say that one thing i noticed about the no hitters in allied appointing on. Mlb network is that It's not the guys throwing ninety seven absurd these hitters majlis renault hitter. They barely hits ninety The only one at better than average fastball was rodion who through no hitter of the eight I guess kimberly finished off the combined. No hitter obviously is way better than average fastball. but that was started by jack davies. And of course it means who has maybe a tick above average fastball. Batting average fastball But the other ones were miley and his ilk throwing the no hitter. So it's a little bit unusual a lander and beckett through the no hitters this year. Yeah no i mean guys who who have learned how to pitch Get get a lot out in into the credit. They've been able to do it now on the other side of that. No hitter with the padres. Who had really struggled. But got a shot in the arm yesterday. from fernando tattoos junior. He returned as a right fielder. goes three for four a double two home runs looked healthy. And i'll tell you what the padres haven't played well Especially against the diamondbacks in the rockies. But it's really set up for him to come in and put a stamp On the mvp race shitty come back and this team start to win ballgames and he continues to play like he played yesterday it sets up well storyline wise for him to put the stamp on his. Mvp and you know what i. Yesterday i was notified to actually have the nl mvp. Vote of haven't had one in a while. I i know. I voted for Ryan braun and he won. And i can't remember the others. I've i've only been doing this for thirty plus years. I think i've only had the. Mvp vote maybe five times. I mean just the luck of the draw not blaming anyone and It's fine whatever vote again. I'm happy with it on complain but it certainly an honor to have the mvp vote and absurdly certainly early. So you know we don't know the mvp is going to be a single has been fantastic this year that much also spoken like a man that has a vote. So we'll we'll we'll slide passer but can i. I gotta ask you about the change of position. I thought all along even even as he started to experiment with center field that if they truly wanted to to maximize him it would have to be in right field. I'm not i'm not. I don't know that by the injury. The provincial of injury by moving outfield especially if he was playing center field Just don't see that being the case but certainly for the season arrested this season if you're trying to maximize this roster that you have I think right. Phil suits him. Best at this point. Well you know. Better about the roster. Obviously cronin worth and kim can play shortstop so they have guys who can manage and To me i love him as a shortstop You know to me. That's a premium position. I'd love to see him. Go back there if it is about the injury all for it..

"All acc appreciates you guys listening in. It is monday august sixteenth. Hopefully you guys had a fantastic weekend out there. It was hot and humid. Here in the northeast. It certainly felt like summer weather is going to get back down into the eighties. Here in the northeast and the next couple of days so fall time starting to creep in the corn is getting high out there and you know what that means that means playoff time is right around the corner and we are coming down the stretch here and major league baseball. What is it six weeks left. Seven weeks left of the regular season and things and Games are as important as ever coming down the stretch here but we got a fantastic episode lined up for you guys. Of course we had history made over the weekend. We had our eighth no hitter thrown in major league baseball tyler. Gilbert's did it. This time for the arizona diamondbacks. And who is tyler gilbert. we're gonna get into. All of that. Tally through is no hitter. Some key statistics some interesting facts and we'll discuss all of that here in segment number one. Well then get some playoff pressure. Which team has the most pressure on them. Over the next couple of weeks here to make the post season or to To advance in the post season it goes all the way from the phillies who have fresher. Obviously not being in the post season since two thousand eleven. The mayor nurse two thousand and one so those squads trying to get rid of those streaks in all of their fans certainly hoping the same all the way to the yankees and dodgers who are perennial postseason teams but have some pressure to possibly win the division or make the postseason then in the second half of the episode. We'll get into news notes. Talk about some injuries. What's been going on. Look at some statistics. How guys are doing here over the past couple of weeks and then finally wrap things up with the standings update where we add here heading into monday. The sixteenth at some teams have the day off. It's a nice time to reconvene reconfigure. Kind of breakdown where everybody's at and keep you up to date with all the latest here on the playoff races coming down the stretch but starting off like i mentioned with tyler. Gilbert's my goodness. The eighth no hitter of the year this year. That is the most in a single seasons history. this ties eighteen. Eighty four so this goes before the live ball era. I mean it's worth noting that in eighteen eighty four it was before the mount was moved to its current distance. So i guess. I should say for the first time in a season where the mound was sixty feet six inches. This has taken place as they move back in eighteen ninety three so we haven't had eight no hitter since eighteen eighty four. And if we get another one here over the past month and a half. We're going to have a new record of nine that no other season has been able to touch and tyler. Gilbert's throws this one for the arizona diamondbacks. And who is tyler gilbert. Well tyler gilbert's he was drafted by the philadelphia phillies back in the two thousand and fifteen major league baseball draft. He was drafted in the sixth round. That year he was ultimately traded years later to the dodgers in february of twenty. Twenty for outfielder kyle. Garlic now garlic spent time in twenty twenty with the phillies. He was then designated for assignment claim by the braves designated again claim by the twins and is currently on the sixty day injured list with the minnesota twins and tyler gilbert's during his time with the dodgers he was ultimately traff. Did he was taken in december of twenty twenty drafted by the diamondbacks from the dodgers in the triple a portion of the rule. Five draft if you guys have been listeners. now i've explained that the rule five draft is essentially players who are not on the forty man roster have the opportunity after five years ultimately changed organizations first specific amount of money they have to remain on that squad or be offered back for a certain amount of cash. Long story short is basically the diamondbacks took him to give him a shot and ultimately he rewarded them with his performance on saturday. So gilbert's no hitter. Let's look at some of the interesting facts and what's going on. Well the one right off. The top is the fact that this was gilbert's first career major league start and only his fourth game career overall. So i mean if i'm tyler gilbert you might as well retire because there's nowhere to go but down from here You've reached the pinnacle. And your first start and it's just fascinating how guy making basically is first big-league start would be able to throw a no hitter let alone against the podge race which have one of the more stacked lineups across major league. Baseball are very good team. So super impressive gilbert was able to do he is the fourth pitcher in the history of baseball to throw a no hitter in his first career. Start he joins bobo holloman. Who did it back in. Nineteen fifty three bump us jones man. What a name. That is bump us be you. Mp you be you mp. Us bump is jones back in eighteen ninety two once again before the mound was shifted back to sixty feet and then you also had theodore breitenstein in eighteen ninety one so only one other guy. Essentially in the live ball era or the past one hundred and twenty hundred and thirty years has done it. Bobo holloman in one thousand nine hundred fifty three so again not very common for somebody making their first start to see this amount of success and just fascinating for tyler. Gilbert's and the overall experience between the pitcher and catcher is fascinating as well..

"For the mets against the dodgers and the giants It didn't go so well. Is the payoff pitch on the air. Too deep left center demo back this is gonna go god for a two run homer for max muncie over the great wall of flushing howie rose. Wcbs i'm howie. rose. I two homers for muncie. That one made it six. Nothing in the second as l. a. blasted carlos correa for a trio of homers on their way to a fourteen to four blowout and a sweep of the three game series. Another rough outing for cookie. He gave them what they what he had a really good hand The he everything man on trying to do my best. I try to do everything that i could but indeed award this time. Now that sums it up. Yeah he's just not where he needs to be at this point of the season. I feel pretty much right now. I feel like ended a spring training. Pretty good awesome perfect defense. Obviously he has been out all year until recently so for him. It feels like the spring. Maybe he's going through that debt arm period. You get a lot in spring training for the not really a good time. No it's not especially you're trying to avoid sweep against one of the league's best teams. Go out there and you basically throw it up wiffle ball. it's a problem So is the offense. Over twelve with runners in scoring position. Sunday. they left ten and in the series two for twenty nine. Twenty six left on base lewis. Ross your thoughts can't get them in if you don't get them on. I'd rather not get him on and not get them in. Little rock here is row haas trying to stay. Calm concern trust We got i think right now. Still is the hidden hitting honestly. It's gotten to the point now where it's it's comical that he can't assess this team the way that everybody else sees it like i know he wants to have his clubhouses back. You wanna have his players back and that's sort of the mold in the mindset that they have but we're not idiots and they're not idiots and he's not in idiot but he sounds like eighty when he says. It's not a concern right. God not a concern. I'm telling you when you get a base it with like conforto was on i last night. I think it was conforto. Conforto forget and alonzo hits a rocket to left field. And you're thinking send him just send him because he's going to die at their come on and i know funny he actually did a scoring. It's like you have no confidence. They're going to drive anybody in scored four runs last night so good for them. Great normal brain jury. And kevin pillar on the mound. Thank your trae. Turner actually doesn't like hitting against. I understand that this is like i don't know what to do right. That and also guys come. They'll throw in e fits pit like you know they don't. There's no sort of rhythm timing you can get. That's the ones when rizzo pitched and struck out freddy freeman. That one time or hubs breath blow out. You know who the heck knows. You know what i thought was. Bizarre was in the Yankee game the whites. I forget which one it was. But one of the white sox pitchers and you see this. In the outfield. He pulled the chart out of his pocket. No yeah off the mound and mike. Let's go the what are we doing. Yeah you gotta know the deal man. You need to know the defensive positioning shift. Everything else likes the after. He studies the card. He gets on the mound shakes off the catcher. 'cause time and the pitching coach came out to right. Oh well yeah. I saw that. Yeah he had the card in his glove at one point and the ad they still couldn't figure it out no no the. The braves had themselves a good weekend similar to the red sox beaten up on the orioles. The braves swept the nationals. So now atlanta's is the first day for them at the season with the outright lead atop the annelies because the phillies lost two out of three to the reds down at citizens bank. That leaves the mets to back of atlanta on the law as they now head out to san francisco to face the giants. You've got richhill. Kevin gosper tonight at nine forty five out there in the bay area also from yesterday notable fernando tat tease junior returned from the i l. made his first career start in right field and all he did was get four hits including a couple of home runs. He's up to thirty three homers on the season despite missing thirty two games already this season jerry. I know you touched on this in the warm up. Show because you've got the bet The latest no hitter tyler gilbert now this this fascinated me not from the standpoint. A it's another no hitter but not only is it his first career start. He's not even really a starting pitcher in. I looked up his minor league stats. He was averaging like five innings per appearance and then he gets called up to the majors in his first three outings. Where relief appearances so. We had like three and two thirds innings on. His ledger is names. Joined bobo holloman and breitenstein no in their first career start nineteen fifty-three eighteen ninety two and eighteen. Ninety one. so. I guess you don't count just als- point right. This guy is a twenty-seven even a prospect reese twenty-seven he's going winnings in the big leagues. He comes up. he's not even stretched out and he gives you a nine inning. No hitter and against the padres. Yes right somebody tweeted me. I thought this was great. Because you know it's someone who's listening for many years. They said heard the name bump as jones. They heard winco doing it in an update. Mets tonight bump is jones and then by the way it almost got followed up yesterday. Cleveland's kristen mckenzie retired the first twenty three tigers. He almost lost his per game with two outs. In the eighth she walked almost check on mckenzie's numbers entering yesterday was gonna ninety one in five with a five six six our retired twenty-three neuro nobody but yes they're not awful. They're middle road. No but i mean there middle the they gotta hit. They did eventually get dollar. Did either of you watch any of that. He was telling you go to break or either of you. Watch any of jets. Giants i did i did i. I couldn't stay after zach. Well same same thing here so there. Is you know there was some good. I thought he stayed in the pocket made a couple nice throws on third down thing you can say really negative about him. I mean he had a couple of third down conversions. He looked confident completions. He didn't put the ball force. The ball down the field. We know he throws well on the run. We knew that we're even saw them in a game. But this is sort of what that offense is. It mean it's very west coast. There's going to be a lot of throws like that. Which is good for a rookie. I think right. They rely on the running game. You get the play action going. He throws well on the run and should give him some safer throws where he doesn't have to stand in there. And the pocket. The only issue with zach wilson and people evaluating him is that the justin fields and trae lance had like spectacular moments in their debut. Woodlands also was like five twelve everywhere. And everybody's out over it. It was just fun because you go on twitter into the comments on those and you see the fans from each team already. Like fighting in scream. It's the first preseason game or we're trying to decide who's going to be good who's not then that nothing really mad. I remember mitch trubisky. Preseason game he was like eight for a touchdown on one drive as a bang. Bang right down the field need to know. Yeah exactly did either. One of us had the same thought. I had on the giants first possession when glennon gets killed on third down. Oh he's a statue has been i and you can't move allen my mind immediately. What i though the naked the line. Oh the offensive line. Third down passing situation sack. That's gonna be a theme again. It's unbelievable eli is all right very good. I thought you were going to say that glennon reminded you of al because.
