Tyler, you are living out your dreams being a Premier League footballer. So in this first season, what was the one game you circled on your calendar and are you a person that most looking forward to and why? The Premier League has always been for me the best league in the world, the most interesting league in the world. So growing up for me, I always enjoyed watching Thierry Henry play. So I think that when I came to the Premier League, having the opportunity to play against arsenal was going to be a really, really cool moment for me. What about politic Chelsea? Oh, true. Yeah, that's a good one too. I mean, whenever you have the opportunity to play against any Americans, it's always an exciting game. One you get to see some of your friends, but also seeing how they're doing in their club team is also really fun. So even when we played against Chelsea and had the opportunity, even after the game for me, him and Brennan just chat on the field, it just feels like you're back at home back in the day playing an academy when you're playing with some of your best friends. I guess, what do you see are the weaknesses to your game that you want to work on? Yeah, that's a great question. I mean, I think I want to continue to add to the offensive part of my game. I think we have some great opportunities on the calendar going forward in between now and the next World Cup. I think that the tournaments that you're looking at, you got Nations League, you have gold cup, you have Copa América. And I think gaining these experiences of playing in major tournaments is going to be super valuable between now being 23 years old and then being 27 by the next time the next World Cup rolls around. I think the best international teams in the world gain this chemistry through playing in major tournaments. I think this will be super valuable for myself. And if you'll remember, that was a time when even before COVID, like empty stadiums or things. So you could hear everything that was being said on the field. And I think I forget who they were playing, but it was like the second game of the group phase. And it was fourth minute of the game. And he was cursing out his own players because they weren't moving quickly enough to get to a ball that had gone out of bounds and throw it back in and put it in play. Right. And I was like, wow, almost too intense, but I loved it. I just love that from time to time. I think my personal favorites when we were playing a preseason game. My last year of being a professional in Orlando, New York versus Toronto. I did that pretty soon with Toronto and he told me to F off. Not the first, not the last to be fair. Definitely was the last. Oh, yes. As an active player. The other question here, I guess surrounds like Christian Pulisic, right? Player who's carries the nickname Captain America, but beyond that, Greg berhalter has given the captain's armband to in the past. You've seen the commercials with Christian Pulisic pressure pressure pressure pressure. Do you think somehow maybe not having the captain's armband is actually a good thing for pulisic? Yeah. This tournament. White off his shoulders. He reminds me so much a land in Donovan. So much. In his demeanor, how soft spoken he is. Landon didn't always want to be the captain. Landon sometimes shifted in and out of games. He would hide a bit, you know? He would tell you that himself. Sometimes the pressure got to him. One of the greatest products the U.S. has ever put out. The poster boy for U.S. soccer in his generation without a doubt. But that didn't make you a leader. That'd make you a captain. He will tell you that himself. "With my mom with my dad with the county that I live in to find the area that that needed it most. And it was very fitting that they were in Poughkeepsie at the end of the day because that's where I was born. That's where I was raised a little bit with my mom at first and finding a community where now kids instead of, I don't know, doing being on the streets or doing drugs or doing anything after school. It gives them the opportunity to at least make the decision, maybe I can go play soccer now or put in the idea in their head that instead of this, maybe I should go do this now. And I think that's something that's super important is giving kids the opportunity, not telling them what to do, but giving them the opportunity to say, maybe this is a better path for myself. And here's someone that came from the same area as me and maybe I can try and be like him. You know, I don't want anyone to say they have to be Tyler Adams or they should be like Tyler Adams. I try and have the qualities that people want to have and be similar to me as possible. If those are the right qualities that resonate with them. So I'm really happy that we were able to find that place and do that. And I picked him up and we tried to run it over, and yeah, I mean, it was just going wild. We couldn't even catch Somerville. He's too fast, man. But we were running after him, so. What is it about this leads team? Your leads team, then it will not die, then it snaps back to life, like the undertaker meet. Yeah, young, ambitious, relentless, just go after it. No matter what, I don't think we're at the point anymore. I know leads used to be, they used to say about leads like we were either going to win 6 one or lose 6 one, but now I think we're more at a place where we have a little bit more stability in our team, but we just go after games. We go after games. We try to score goals. We try to just get after the opponent as much as possible, so we don't stop. I mean, you were everywhere in this game. I think I tweeted Tyler Adams is enormous, 92nd minute, and he's still charging around the field as if he'd just come on, covering for his teammates. Yeah, having to dig deep up in those moments, or is just the exhaustion, not even registering because adrenaline's kicked in. No, no, I'll be tired. I'll be tired when I'm when I'm done playing when I'm when I hang up the boots, you know what I'm saying? So I just, you know, even after we score the goal in the 84th minute, it feels like such a long time until the final whistle. I know that the ref added 5 minutes about a time on somehow I don't know where he gets that number from, but that's just what you do when you play against leads. You automatically get 5 minutes of out of time and then you just have to you just have to dig deep. So just one of those moments, you know what I'm saying? As a kid, you dream of the moments like these and I'm not gonna not gonna regret not giving it my all anytime I'm out there. Do you know what fail fatigue at all? No, I definitely feel fatigue. Today I'm still tired, but by the next match day, I'm fine. For me, it's just more of a mental block. If you ask my mom, if you get punched in the face, you say, it's mental. Didn't hurt. And then so I kind of just have that thing about me now at this point where it's just like more, it's mental and I'm gonna hear it from my mom after the game if I don't run more if I don't tackle harder if I don't do this so I'd rather avoid the text from her. The photograph that broke the Internet, you, Tyler Adams, I believe, possibly on Duncan street in a 5 guys. What did you order? And did it scratch the hamburger rich? Double bacon cheeseburger. I felt like the timing was right coming back home after victory. Long awaited victory. I should say, against Liverpool, in Liverpool. Yeah, me and my girlfriend, I told her I was like, tonight's the night that I just need to go out and kind of veg out. It's gonna be the biggest cheat day of the year. Let's get a little taste of home. And yeah, we headed into 5 guys. Well, I don't understand this how in Leeds 5 guys is not cool 5 lads, but was it intentional that you set yourself under a poster which proclaimed and I'm guessing about 5 guys, but it could be about you. The poster said too good to stay in America. I think my girlfriend gets the media set up in that one credit to her for that one. I don't know what she was going for in that. But it was about 5 guys. It was about 5 guys. I did wonder whether you were just like, western McKinney, got all that sweet chipotle money. Oh, hello burger category. Exactly. I needed to open it up the doors to another sponsorship. So hopefully 5 guys comes giving me three 5 guys whenever I want. God bless get on it 5 guys. It's time to dive into the past couple of weeks since we last spoke. And we're going to talk specifically about the last 8 days of football, which as I mentioned, have caused me to have to emergency change my pants a fair few times. But to really appreciate the clashes with Liverpool and Bournemouth, we've got a touch upon the emotional runway that was the lead up. So let's go back and start with the arsenal gate, Tyler, in which Leeds played so bloody well. Truly battled arsenal league leading arsenal hand to hand fist to fist, but left that game were nothing. I mean, arsenal's unbelievable team, the way that they're playing right now, you know, they deserve to be top of the table. So it was a heartbreaking one for us, especially after we look back on that game and we're like, wow, you know, we competed with the league leading team. We dominated in different areas of the game, offensively, defensively, we were sharp. We focused on all the different details of the game. But we just didn't come out with anything. And I think that that was kind of the story of our season so far, leading up to that game was that maybe luck just wasn't going our way when we needed it, or we were performing well, but giving up a late goal or performing well, but just couldn't score the goal. So many different scenarios, but yeah, that was a game that we reflected on and we kind of said to ourselves, it will only take one game in our season to turn this thing around quickly. Quick side bought all it took for arsenal, a team you supported as a kid to change there. They're very being. Was to sign that Turner, change everything. Matt knew not to talk to me after that game. I wasn't happy. We caught up for a second, but I honestly, I didn't really even have anything to say. I mean, I'm super happy for him and obviously some of the opportunities that he's getting in such an amazing team and doing really well developing really well. But after that game, I was like, what do I even what do I even say to you right now? I know we dominated that game, but we just didn't get anything from it. It's like, you can't really say anything. Matt Turner knows you well enough not to look at you in the eye. Post match and there was a different kind of agony. Against two more Americans at Fulham, Tim ream what a king and the truly magical Anthony Robinson, but again for which you set out with a knock. What was that experience like for you? Why is that like for you when you're not able to play in your teams hour of need and you just got to watch like the rest of us from the stand? Yeah, it was a frustrating one because like you said it was more knock than anything. But obviously at the moment that we're at not only in our season, but with things looking a little bit further ahead, you just want to make a smart decision at that moment in time and sitting out for me is one of the hardest things to do. I played through a lot. I'll play through anything, especially to help my team, especially in a moment where it's not like we were winning every game and you're like, oh, let's just take a break. It was more, you know, I want to make an impact. I want to help us get over that hump and yeah, it was frustrating to watch that from the sidelines. I think for the fans, it was obviously difficult as well because that pathway that we were almost sort of continuing for them. But yeah, it was a moment that, again, we needed to go through. We need to figure out what we were doing wrong and figure out how we could solve it. Two and field Liverpool game, and I'm not just saying this. I've been very fortunate, you know, my girlfriend is now moved over. She had finished up with her job in Germany and now we're settling here and leads and it's been a really good transition. You know, finding a house, having all the furniture move over, really starting to make it feel like home. And especially not living in a hotel anymore, it's been a good feeling. What's been the hardest thing to adjust to about England? Because it does have its idiosyncrasies. Yeah, I'd have to be The Rain for me or waking up every morning and raining. That's a big change for me in Germany. The weather wasn't amazing, but it wasn't raining every day. That's for sure. So getting used to The Rain is a little bit different, but to be honest with you, after going through a transition for almost four years in Germany and moving out of the house at an early age. Hello, this is Adam sharp from Harrisonburg, Virginia. This quarter of D.C. United home of the water. This question is for Tyler Adams. I am a soccer coach and as a youth coach, I'm always looking for players who exhibit captain esque qualities. How did you Tyler develop the leadership skills to be a captain, even though you were playing with men older than you when did you realize that this was something that was important to you and how deliberate have you been to exercise your role as a captain? Even potentially in areas in teams and situations where you're not the official captain. Thank you. Adam sharp from Harrison Berg, Virginia. I love this question so much, Tyler. Can you talk about when you started, I think, seriously about captaincy, leadership, and what's natural and what have you deliberately taught yourself and how my idea obviously of being a captain is a natural ability. Never something that I forced. I think one you have to be obviously a born competitor one that every single day wants to win no matter what the cost is and they're not there to necessarily make friends. They're there maybe somebody wants an idea or advice you give them that advice and they do that. But there's obviously different ways to lead. For me, it's always been natural, playing up in an age group. So when I was younger, I had to challenge myself against bigger and older players, but I was never the type of person to back down from anything, never the type of person that when I had something on my mind didn't say it. So I would battle with older guys, say what I felt no matter what it was, and I didn't really think about what the cost of it was because I knew that it would make me better. It would make them better. So I always have the mentality that iron sharpens iron and your captain needs to be one of those players that's continually sharpening the iron. Is there any coach that's really help you understand the potential of captaincy? I don't think it's been a coach, I would say that I've been fortunate to have very good captains at a young age and that's what kind of helped me shape me into the type of captain that I want to be. When I signed with New York Red Bulls, my captain was Dax mccarty. The Ginger king. Yeah, he taught me what it's like to come into training on time. What work he's putting in beforehand, how he talks to people and how he speaks to people is really, really important. How he can get pissed off on training, but after, you know, go up to people and say, yeah, you know, it's training. That's what it's going to be like. But off the field, this is how we talk to people, you know? And then I had Sasha question in Luis robles, sometimes Bradley Wright Phillips and those four guys alone right there, those names speak for themselves. Careers that they had, how they've developed into leaders, how they are as people most importantly. It's one thing to talk field, right? And I do a lot of it, but as soon as we're off the field, maybe I'll still talk not as much as I do on the field. So that's important as well. You know, I've had some good conversations with Greg berhalter from the national team. My role with having been captain for a lot of games now and what a good opportunity that is. But what he sees and how his perception of a captain is. And I think that's the biggest thing, right? At the end of the day, is everyone's gonna have a different perception of what a captain and what their type of leader they're looking for is. "Are passionate loyal. How many fans have come up to me in the street and how much I've been recognized here is more than in my entire life. And I definitely was not expecting that. I was just expecting to be able to walk out, go where I need to and do whatever, but fans recognize you, they're passionate, they remember everything. You know why they recognize your title. Oh no, why? There's a giant Tyler Adams, your face, but the size of the entire side of Ellen road stadium already hanging up there. I need to know, what does it feel like when you look at that bad boy? The media team here in Leeds, they sent me a picture of where they were hanging it and the decision to hang it on. I think it's the biggest stand at Ellen road. Yes. My girlfriend sent me a picture before the game against wolf. And I was like, holy crap, that's a big. I didn't realize it was that big. On a photo you don't really realize it, but then when she's standing in front of it, I'm like, yeah, okay, it's really, really big. So after the game I was able to drive by it and see it. And yeah, I mean, I can't lie, it's pretty, pretty cool. It's amazing. It really is. I can imagine ten, 20 years time. It will forever hang on the side of your mother's home in whopping as falls. It really is. It's a work of art that one day should actually hang in the Smithsonian. But you choose number 12, you shouldn't number. Can you take us into the thought process? My favorite numbers are four and 14. And neither one of those are available and the numbers that were available were just whatever. So I sent the list of numbers that were available to my mom, my mom immediately responded with 12. It was her number back in the day and for volleyball as well when she was growing up, so it's her favorite number. So reppin my mom's favorite number for oh God, that is honestly me every young American seem to be wearing Melissa's volleyball number on fields across this nation. You made your Premier League debut in sensational style. When you're about to make your debut in the league that Thierry Henry, your role model made his name in in the league. In the words of Jurgen Klinsmann, where the greatest music is sung, you grew up watching the best players in the world playing the Premier League. Can you describe your emotions the night before the game do you sleep well or does it just feel like any other game? It's a bit surreal. You know, I try not to think about it too much. So the night before games we have to stay in T motel. I'm actually here right now because I still need to move into my house. We had the team dinner, the night before, wake up in the morning. Not amazing. I didn't sleep good. I was just a little bit anxious and just ready to go. You just have so much energy, even the night before. When did you find out you're starting? We found out the day before. We found out the day before. So that's definitely nice. It's a little bit calming when you know that you're playing and you kind of go through in your head what you need to do, mentally prepare for it. Do they just pin it on the board, like in school or do they read it out in front of everybody? How's that? Going through the tactics of how we want to play against wolves and before we go through all the tactical stuff, he says the lineup. So as soon as we're going through tactics, you can kind of envision where you're going to be playing what role you need to play, which players you're playing against. And it gives you a better idea when you're going through the tactical decision. So the relief when you see that or nerves or both not really relief, nerves, anything. I try to train my best throughout the week, obviously, so that when that comes up, it's almost a given in my head that I'm going to be playing. So, you know, I usually know based off how I perform throughout the week with the feeling is going to be. It was something that I was expecting based off of how I had trained it to have only been right. Brendan was interviewed right before the game, I think by the leads on there, their own social. And I got to say he was just admirably chill. I think the quote that I loved of his was, I feel good, man. I don't feel nervous. He said that he was so amped. I feel good, man. I don't feel nervous. This is exact words. And I want that before the two of you. I mean, you guys have been mate for a long, long bloody time. Here you are in another world in an incredible place, but about to take the field at that cauldron Ellen road together for the first time. What did the two of you say to each other in the locker room? It was actually on the way out. We're walking through the tunnel at tapped him on the shoulder and I was like, just enjoy it. Just enjoy it. We both know what we're capable of. And it's so nice and common to know that we have each other on the field. You have teammates that would back me through anything, especially on this team, but to know that I have him having my back no matter what also is a good feeling and he knows that I have his back. So the chemistry on the field that we have together is obviously second to none. We played a lot of games with each other now, especially with the national team. We just have a common presence for each other, a natural chemistry with each other. And that's a really good feeling. You and me, we're doing this. I can't imagine what that must have felt like. It gave me so much joy to see you both walk out onto that field in the sun. No less. It leads. And within minutes, you set the tone with a crunching tackle on neves. Do you remember it? At a time when the World Cup is just a 105 days away, we will live the twists and turns of his ongoing oddity. It's mister Tyler Adams. Rod. Thanks for having me, man. Excited to be back. Not much happened since we last spoke then Tyler. No, not much, not much. Now I got a few things to tell you. Oh my God, we are putting two days after you made your Premier League debut. I want to wind the clock back, take us to this move to lead united back in July for $24 million. How did you first hear about it? And how did it feel in that moment? We had talks in the summer discussing about the possible move with leads being my favorite club to go to. I remember flying back to Leipzig for preseason. I was starting the medical process. And I remember getting a call from my agent and he said, stop doing all the preseason checkouts you're done. The deal is done. The CEO of Leipzig wool called the medical staff soon and Leipzig and let them know it hit me pretty hard. A club that I shared a lot of amazing moments with one that helped me develop so much. Friendships and staff members that I created real relationships with outside of just the football that we all enjoyed. It didn't hit me until that moment that I hung up the phone that I was going to be leaving and moving on to a new step in my journey, one that I felt like I needed to make challenge myself and prove myself as a person and a player. First, I want to talk to you about leads the city, a place I know incredibly well. I went to university there. I actually had to do fleeting stint as the leads mascot, the leads Lion, and I know that is a singular proud west Yorkshire city. One of the world's great mill towns, can you describe your first impressions of the place? The city for me is absolutely electric. You know, when I arrived, the weather was good, and you know, when I pulled up to the hotel, I was amazed by how many people were out and about all different types of people diverse city. You see the university and how beautiful that is. And the energy you can immediately feel is amazing. I mean, it's the birthplace of such iconic figures as Peter O'Toole and scary spice. I can't know how you're dealing with the accent. Oh no, the accent's easy. It's much easier than your accent, actually. That's such an incredible put down, but it is true. I mean, my mother can't understand me. She said I speak as if my jaws are wired together, but it's got a distinct accent. There's a lot of gutter or clutter. There's a lot of drop consonants. It's a lot of like, I'm off to shop. It's like very concise. Yes, yes, it's exactly that. Now, the first few days take some getting used to. It's better than listening to German. That's for sure. Don't you stop Brad all this without accidentally Tyler. Hold on to what you got because you may be in Yorkshire, but there is a strong sense of home over there, as we all know, first of all, you are, at least united, reconnecting for a third time in your career already with Jesse marsh, a manager. You're so bloody familiar with the first coach you when you were 15, he gave you your debut at New York Red Bulls as a 16 year old. He was your coach and Leipzig at the start of last season. When the recruitment by Leeds happened, did you and Jesse get on the phone and just laugh? Here we go again. We're doing this. Jesse played such a pivotal role in the beginning of my career as he's continuing to do now. He's taught me so many different things about myself about the game, helping mature as a person, you know, when I first met him, I was 14 years old and now I'm 23 years old. So we've had a lot of successful moments, some tough ones as well. But we did get on the phone before I made the decision to come here. And we had some tough conversations just about what he needs for me, what role he needs me to play, what I need to bring to this team and how I can change the dynamic of what leads wants to do moving forward. Yeah, I'm fascinated by your relationship with Jessica because I remember talking to you for the first time when you were 17 and you talked about how Jesse had taken you aside and essentially almost explained how your career could and should go that this was a system he projected where you would go. I have no idea within that system whether you or even he imagine there'd be so many Jesse marsh Tyler Adams touch points along the way you are so familiar with him what he wants his system. What did he tell you about what he needs to me? He just wanted to see the confident Tyler Adams, the one that when he came through and broke through in New York and initially made his debut and Leipzig, how I was able to bring my energy, bring what I'm so good at on the field and continue being the person in the locker room that people look up to and admire, but on the field most importantly, just get back to my old self and it's hard to hear that initially.

I had a question for Tyler Adams. I would really love to hear Tyler's thoughts on the kind of emotional and mental roller coaster. That centers around squad selection, right? There's all these guys that Tyler plays with throughout qualifying and then at friendlies. And then the nation's league. And all these guys are trying to make the squad for the World Cup. And what is it like within the squad? You've got to imagine there's core players who probably were pretty confident. They're going to make the world squad. And then there's bubble players. Do they talk about it amongst themselves? Or is it unspoken? Is it very professional? Keith, I love this question. We all experienced squad reveals differently. Fans use it as a chance to go on blast on Twitter, Tyler, as these squads gain down to the wire are announced, how do you process it as a professional seeing which of your friends you really close with that in and which are not it's really, really tough, you know, whenever a squad comes out, especially for something as important as the World Cup, you're obviously keen on certain players being there, who's not going to be there, and you want to see immediately if obviously some of your friends have made the cut or not. But when it comes down to that, you have to really remove the emotional connection of your friendships and think about what's most important for the team and the success of the team. And even for myself, you know, there's no guarantees that you're going to be in the World Cup squad. You're obviously have to be playing well. They want to take who's informed, who's been playing. There's so many different variables that come into making a squad, but it's important that you kind of remove that emotional aspect of it. When a player that you love gets taken off, do you feel that, or is it just like in that moment, you're just like locked in the game? I'm not noticing anything. You absolutely feel it. You feel for them because I'm sure not only that they've been working hard, but you've seen what they've gone through every single day, whether it's past camps or what they've done with their club and that grind and it takes a big mental toll on you when you work for something for so long and then obviously you don't have the opportunity to achieve that, but you really have to remove that tie for a second and kind of relish the opportunity whether you get that opportunity or not and kind of how you can make an impact and prove to the coaching staff that they made the right decision. So my ideal day, first off, location, we are going to be in Lake winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, one of my favorite places, you know, I would like my girlfriend to be there and my family to be there. Her family to be there. So we're gonna wake up in the morning, go for a little hike in the morning, come back down, have breakfast, jump in the Lake for a little bit. Spend some time with the families, just hang out, take the boat out for a little bit, do some tubing some water activities, and then chill and probably watch the sunset, have a nice little bonfire. I'm reading a book right now by Tim Grover called winning. He was a personal trainer of guys like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, all these guys. And it's a perfect title because for me, one of the most important things in my career is I want to be the winner. And obviously what that's going to take, what that entails varies to different people, but I've come off winning my first European trophy now with the pokal, but he talks about how winning is unapologetic. Winning owes you nothing, and as soon as you win your first title or first anything, you're way further away than you think to winning your second one. So how can you gain that 0.0001% every single day to get closer to that to improve? What are you doing when other people aren't? And that really stuck with me in this moment because, you know, an off season is a time to kind of reflect on your goals and what you want to achieve for the next year and kind of what you want, when you feel like you get so close sometimes and then it just pulls it right away from you and you lose and PKs or you lose and some tragic ending and it's so unapologetic. There's no apologies to when you know it takes no prisoners. Groover was a physical trainer who actually turned into a psychological motivator and he divided competitive athletes into three categories, coolers who follow others and are hesitant to take initiative, closers who complete tasks and save a big congratulations. "Was quite good. And then when we came out and we're walking down the tunnel, we just see torrential rain all of a sudden coming down and anything can happen at that point. We thought the pitch will probably hold up. But it didn't hold up. So as soon as we got on the pitch, we got in our little huddle before they blew the whistle, and we just told ourselves, it's gonna be a battle. We know what this game is like. We went through it and qualifying. Obviously not what The Rain aspect, but just everything against us at all times and you have to figure out a way. That's what we did. You know, it was not pretty by any means. And honestly, it was, I played like other guys played like we honestly did not have a great game by any means, but that's what happens and you have to grind it out. But who can play football in these conditions? It was less football. It was more Royal Rumble and there was a moment when you pulled the number 7 over, it was like a horse collar tackle. It felt like you were just like, mud fight, let's do it. It was tackles like that, honestly. You know, there was a little bit of an emotional aspect to it where it was just like the game was getting dirty and down and I was like, we can play it that way if we want to play that way. So no one's going to take advantage of us. When I was younger growing up as a kid, I hated getting dirty and playing in The Rain, but now I love it. So I think it was the first tackle of the game. I just slid in my whole Jersey was just black when I stood up and I was like, all right, this is what it is. Let's get on with it. I'll tell you who can play football in those conditions. Unis Musa. This guy was unbelievable in this game. He was just having fun and just touring with people. And when I got the ball I was just like, let me just give the ball to units so dribble the whole field as he usually does. I ask you this and please do not hit me for asking Tyler others. What does it feel like to be nutmeg? Do players care in the moment? A part of you like crap. I'm going to be a GIF. Oh, no, no, no. I mean, not me because the amount of times I've been nutmeg does a defensive center made, are you kidding me? You know how many good number tens I've played against where it looks like they're going to pass or do something and they're like, oh, here you go, a little cheeky one, and I'm like, oh my God. It just happens, but I'll probably kick you by the end of the game. That's for sure. There's levels to it. You know, when you're young, when you're young, you're always going for the nutmeg. That was like my signature move, like someone's running at me full speed. I'm like, oh, just put it through the legs. A little one like that. Honestly, as I've gotten older, it's happened less and less, but there's still times that you're like, ah. Here we go again. You know, like one of those things. What are the big lessons you take from this window? As a collective. The most important lesson we talked about it as a group in our pre camp meeting was that we need to set the standard high against woke up opponents and we did that obviously starting off with a win against Morocco was a very high standard, but to an even improve on that against the even better opponent in Uruguay and then get a draw. You know, you look at it as a World Cup window, right? And if those two teams on your group and you get four points out of those two games, it's looking good to get out of your group. I think that's super important that we start to change gears in our head and think about how we need to look at the World Cup games, what we need to do to qualify to the next round and the maternity that we showed in these games was super important. And I think the second most important thing was the flexibility that we showed within our team. We played different formations. We played different players. The guys played different roles, and these were really the test matches to do that. In the U.S. football media, there is a huge debate about the number 9 spot. How much press do you read? Does any of the paper talk the social media penetrate inside? I don't read it personally. A lot of people have a lot of things to say about every position. We trust the guys that are coming into camp, Gregg trust the guys, and ultimately we trust Greg. And I think that's the most important thing that the guys that he's putting out on the field, there's a reason that he's putting them out on the field and we have a lot of quality in that number 9 role. It's just figuring out the best style play to get the quality out of them because they're also different. You have emotional ties to some of the players, as you mentioned, you came through as a youth player, we've had G, we taught lost podcast about your love for him, shared love with Christian and western who also came through with him together along with Luca de la Torre. Do you feel their success or their failure? Do you live that when they score or don't score or on the field? Is it just no place for those kind of emotions? There's always a place for those kinds of emotions. These are the guys that you grew up with went through the trenches with to get to the point where you're at right now. And they're successes when I'm watching Chelsea play when I'm watching Juventus play. I'm just rooting for them and I want them to do well because that's not only a good reflection for them but it's a good reflection on U.S. soccer and that's what we're trying to build here is that these U.S. soccer players have a reputable conversation for being top talents in the world, not just in the U.S. not just in Europe but in the world and the game of football and their successes mean a lot to me. The other seemingly open position is goalkeeper and I filmed with Matt Turner last Friday. Part of the conversation was for him how one mistaken that role can define your career. Suffered against El Salvador in crazy conditions, Shawn Johnson, man. That gen made one mistake. They're not the U.S. out of Olympic qualifying way back in 2012. If you let one in the 95th minute and it held him back and he's a fantastic goalkeeper. For nearly a decade, there is no more brutal a position in football. How do you understand the mindset keepers need to have to be successful and how it's different to you guys in the outfield as a professional footballer you have to have an ability to say next play next game living in the moment of exactly what's going on and I think that's super important. Goalkeepers obviously a little bit of a different beast in animal when it comes to that, whereas one moment can really define not just a game, but your whole career because people are looking at that moment and thinking, is he trusted? Will he make another mistake like that? Whereas for me as a center midfielder, I've made mistakes and I've been able to live with them and move on because I'm getting more opportunities I'm touching the ball 75 times. So if I make one bad pass, two bad passes in a game, they might not cost me. They train a pop for a large percentage of camp. Do they feel like a breed apart? They're different. We don't even include them in our group. Goalkeepers aren't a part of the team, you know what I'm saying? They go out 30 minutes before the team. They stay after 30 minutes after the team. They're doing their own thing in their corner over there. And when we need goalkeepers, we're like, hey Matt, come and go so we can take shots on you. That's kind of what they're there for, you know? Go bless every fan needs a base player. There are now just two more games to get things right. As we pod, U.S. soccer, have just announced fixtures upcoming against Japan and Saudi Arabia, did you feel that just now a 180 minutes between you and the World Cup, the die is almost cast. It's also strange because one of the things I looked most forward to at after qualifying for the World Cup is kind of that pre camp vibe where you're able to go in and have two or three weeks to prepare before you enter your first game in the group stage, whereas now teams a bit strange that our last games are going to be in September and then you have to bank on hopefully playing some games with your club before you head to the World Cup and you have your group stage game. So we're going to miss that opportunity to be together a couple of weeks before and get that feeling for it. But that's why we emphasize that this summer camp was so important for us. I have a bit of a weird one because Tyler and I used to play together actually in the old days with middle pass in the rangeville. So it's been really exciting for me to get to watch you kind of grow through the game. My question is about American coaching. We see your form of coach, Jesse marsh now, stepping in pretty well at leads and I'm curious about how you see the trajectory of American coaches, how have you seen American coaching develop and do you see potential for kind of bigger presence of American coaches in Europe? Keep doing what you're doing, Tyler, I'm proud of you, bro. Yes, I do remember playing at middle path. That was ages ago, but I grew up with a lot of good guys around there in the grandville. Could have been you win in the poke old Jacob Gomez in another life, but the coaching is the gap closing. Can you see the gap closing? Do you see a wave of American coaches coming over to Europe anytime soon? You can definitely see the gap closing. I would say that one thing that has impressed me a lot about European coaches is just their tactical ability and the different ways they're able to play and manage the games. One thing that I love about American coaches that I think not every coach has is that mentality factor that U.S. mentality to go out there grind to win games and do what you need to do. Apply that pressure when he's needed. So Jesse has done an amazing job. But I do see a wave of U.S. coaches making that jump just as American players have. What's crazy is I haven't been coached by so many Americans. Jesse and Gregor obviously to Americans that I have been coached by at a high level. So it will be interesting to see what is that next young American coach that comes through and has the ambition to go to Europe and abroad because it's not always easy when you have to relocate your whole family. There's a lot of other factors. I think the next young coach to go over remember these two words Bruce arena. Question number two, let's do it. Oh, this is the Noah originally from buffalo, New York. I was just calling to ask Tyler Adams if he had any pre game or postgame meals that he generally goes to. Noah, finally a question about food that's my favorite topic. As far as leading up to a game, I always try to put a lot of carbs in my body in a little bit of protein to keep me going to give me that energy. On the day of a game usually I'll have a breakfast veggie omelet and some oatmeal and then my pre game match meal is always pasta chicken, broccoli, sometimes salmon, and then like a bowl of fruit, usually pretty similar every time. Once you recover email, or recovery meal could be pizza, Chick-fil-A, when I'm in the U.S., chipotle doesn't matter after a game. As long as you get the food in, you right after. So it could be anything. Oh, do you have a cheat meal during the week toilet? I don't really have like a big cheat meal. I love sushi, so I wouldn't say that's even unhealthy. So I like to have some sushi every now and then. So I'll usually have that once a week. Best sushi place in Leipzig. Oh. Can't be giving out free advertising. I'm curious to know if Tyler is noticed a difference in the way that other players or coaches view American players and the American national team if they still see us as underdogs or if they look at this team and they think, wow, you guys could actually do something in the next turn and they're really go forward and start to be a powerhouse in the international soccer scene. Is it something you experience is that something you even think about? Definitely not something I think about, but if there was a way that I would want to be viewed, it's always good to go into a game as an underdog, teams don't always relish the opportunity to play against the U.S. and now when people review our team and they go over our team, they probably say, oh, we got to look out for more than one, two, three, four guys. We have 11 players on the field that can be dangerous in their own ways. And that's super important to see the progression of how teams view us. That's credit to our team for the development that we're going through. Players that are coming through the pipeline, young players almost every single camp stepping into positions to be dangerous and play a big role. It's the first African side you faced as a senior player. What a performance overall by the team. What a good feeling to finally play in opposition that wasn't from Concacaf. We've had this long awaited time where we wanted to face different oppositions and really test ourselves against World Cup opponent. You know, you look at Morocco last night and see some of the names that are on that field and we matched up really well against them. Tyler, that was some opening goal. I loved what Christian politics said about the opening goal after the game. He said I guess for you guys, it might not be easy, but it's what I've done. I've been training this, my whole life. So for me, it's a touch I expect myself to make, yeah, maybe it's not for everyone. Tyler, how many Americans could pull off that first touch in our nation of 330 million. That was a special touch right there. And that's why he's our number ten. He shows up in those moments right there. And that quality that he has the composure to settle the ball and then simply pass it across the gulf of red and aronson. I'm happy to finally get one under my belt and win that first trophy. The win was all be Leipzig's first ever trophy after years of coming so bloody close but never quite reaching the promised land. Victory against a feisty remarkable Freiburg with ten men you were able to last two extra time, hold on to a one one draw, can you take us into a penalty shootout? What goes through your mind when that final whistle blows? And you know it's going to penalties, you all huddle together, you already know if you're taking one or not. As soon as that whistleblower and we come into the huddle, the coach basically just goes around and says, I was willing to take a PK. Some guys aren't fresh, some guys are confident, some guys are not. We had 5 guys that stepped up immediately and wanted to take the PKs. I was 6th on the list, so I was prepared if it came to that. I was kind of happy that it didn't come that far and we wanted it for. So I'll take that, but I was prepared to if I needed to. We really, I mean, what can you see your mind in that penalty shootout when all the players are just standing there doing the penalty shootout thing, arms round each other, stranded on the halfway line. I'll be kind of fans crapping it. Even neutrals, crappier. We're watching humans essentially play Russian roulette. It's not football. It's a completely different thinker. What do you experience? It's a long walk from Hatfield to the penalty spot, so you have to be prepared for that. Your thought process can change very quickly. You know, if my opportunity came, I just had to be prepared to control the nerves. Do you actually train penalties regularly or just in the run up to big games? For me, just in the run up to big games because normally I'm not the main penalty shooter. So that last week or throughout the pokal before every game we would take them because it could always come to penalty shoot out in tournament format. So I was prepared at the end of the day. You told me before we started taping that you were intending to do a panenka. No, no, no, no. I can't let you know where I'm gonna go because all the goalkeepers that might listen to this, I can't give them my spot, but it's the same spot every time. But it does a victory on penalty shootouts, emotionally. Does it feel different to a win in extra time? The sweet relief, the anxiety winning in a penalty shootout does feel very different because your emotions are so heightened at that time..

I've been very fortunate for the sacrifices that they've been able to make on me trying to achieve my dream, leaving behind what they want to do and putting me and my brothers at the forefront of everything and perfect example of that is whenever I have the opportunity to play at home or a game where they're in the stands immediately, I'm always looking for them and making sure I know where they are during the national anthem, smiling and waving at them because when I look at my parents, it's suddenly relaxes me. Just like when I grew up playing in the academy or playing recreational soccer, they were always there for me. So to be able to look up at them and know that they're there supporting me now and the biggest stage, it's no different than playing on the small stage. So when we see you take the field with the United States of America and you're looking around, you are able to locate your parents and you are able to make eye contact during that national anthem. 100%. I always know where my parents are. My dad always gives me instructions on the field too, so I'm always able to communicate with them. Are they going to be at World Cup 2022? Yeah, a 100%. "First game and then play Chelsea not this be your first game. And then my brother is a huge Chelsea fan, my younger brother, so his first thoughts were, oh my God, you guys are gonna lose 7 zero. I can't wait to see you guys. And I'm like, okay, great. So then when I was obviously took the field, you know, you get the butterflies in your stomach, you get the nerves, but as soon as the whistleblower, I was surprised to realize, okay, it's just another football match and when you're there and your family's there supporting you and you're in your hometown, what better first game? I'm raising this bud to brothers. What a younger brother is. It's what you just 69 minutes to make your Mark. Ghosting in between defenders to nod one past a stunned Courtois, a goal on your debut. Did I mention that you were just 16 against bloody Chelsea and you Tyler Adams a lifelong Arsenal fan? The feelings were amazing. I didn't know what to do. You could tell by my celebration, my hands are in the air. I'm like, what do I do? I have no idea. I pointed up right at my mom right away and that was definitely a special moment for us. What's it like to score against one of the biggest clubs in global football? And then get back in mom and dad's car for the ride home or did you celebrate in another way that night? I think before the game I ate Olive Garden for my pre match meal. My mom picked me up in the minivan after the game and good times. It's not like, yeah, they always joke about being a bomb it's a boy. One minute you're a man. The next minute you find yourself back in maths class in like 5th grade. It was basically that. I mean, I was just sitting in the backseat on my phone. I was probably on my first iPhone at that point, right? And then yeah, just ready to go to school the next day. You know, God, whatever comes out this interview, you've just guaranteed all you can eat breadsticks for the rest of your life. That would be an endorsement that I would love. I wouldn't lie to you. Although we don't have in Germany, that would be the first stop every time I'm home. Well, you don't have real Italian food in Germany pretty much will the champions. Can I ask you that moment? Did it feel like a dream to you? Or was that a moment where you were like holy crap? This is me. I just did that. This is my future. I belong. No, I was a dream. It was a dream. "Too for everything that we do. Yeah, they're my pack, I wouldn't do anything without them. You go from being like, and on top of the world to be like, oh, maybe I'm in the top four. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah, it's not trying to qualify for champions. You know what I'm saying? Do I have under 13? Your soccer career began its incredible climb. The good news, the Red Bull's youth academy gave you a spot. The challenging news to train with them required a 150 yes a 150 mile round trip one hour, 20 minutes each way to their practice facility in New Jersey from your home 5 nights a week. Take me back to your parents conversations about whether they could swing or not. Was it a long debate? No, honestly, and it was really just trying to find the best competition. So when that opportunity arose, there was a no brainer because I was the dream that I wanted. And as soon as I tell my mom, this is my dream, she'll do anything she can. Quitting her job to drive me back and forth. No amount of times I hear this story from your mouth Tyler where I do not marvel at this moment as you began you're grinding regimen for 6 long years finish school at three. Leave home at 5. Do your homework in the back of that car. Get to practice at 8, play until 9 30. Then hightail it back up state and get home. At 1130, on repeat listeners, 5 times a week. Was it mentally exhausting? No, it's not mentally exhausting at all for 14 year old, but I can't imagine what it was like for my parents, man. My schedule is easy. I go to school with my friends. I have fun. I get in the car. I go to training and I'm like, yeah, amazing. I'm sitting in the passenger seat. I didn't realize what it was like until I started doing the drive myself when I turned 17 or 16. That was the moment when you turn out to be friends and said, mom, dad, I don't know if I can handle this. I was like, guys, I think I need a driver. I think I need you guys to keep driving me. I can't handle it, but no, my parents, I mean, going to work and working a full-time job and then being like, oh, I have to go directly home and not have dinner and not through anything and then drive me down and sit in a parking lot for an hour and a half. That's where I'm just like, boggles my mind that they were able to do that. The craziest part of it all is they did it for 6 years and they were like, wow, we're done with it. And then my brother makes New York Red Bull academy. And then they continue for another 6 years. Card, raising this to parents. I am interested in how that drives that sheer total commitment of you and your parents. Has that shaped the actual football you play? There's a quote with yours once I'm definitely a grinder, I work for everything that I earn, my mentality on the field is being Gritty. Is there a connection between the thing? Yeah, a 100%. I felt like me making that commitment and my parents making that commitment to obviously drive down there, the long days, lots of hours put into something, you have to succeed. Like, in my mind, there's only succeeding. There was never a plan B of if this doesn't work out and my parents just resell his time in my home put her job, then we have a backup plan. There was never a backup plan for me. And that was what was important. That's what I learned at a young age of getting out of these long drives. No plan B, did that make you lock down your focus more to that meat you have some nights of fear? I mean, that's high stakes on a kid that young, no plan B in life if you make plan B's, you're already thinking about not succeeding. So for me, it's always what do I want the most? Set my goals out, a goal was becoming a professional soccer player at any level, didn't necessarily have to be with Red Bull, just in general. I needed to sign a professional contract. That was my goal. And there wasn't ever thinking about, oh, if that doesn't work, I'll go play college soccer, if you know, like, I would just want to become a pro. So. There's a story you tell that I love about your youth team experience. When the coach is early teens gave your squad an unvarnished lecture about your chances of going pro, they were doing it to push you all back on your toe to just rock your world. You know, it's important they said that you look around this circle and know that only one or two of you are going to make it to the senior professional ranks. That by the way would make me crap my pants because I know it's truth. They wanted the shock you. They wanted to give you a harsh dose of reality. But your mental reaction. I mean, it was almost superhuman. What was it Tyler? The one or two is going to be me. Maybe I was naive, but I feel like that's what makes me also the person and player I am. You have to be a little bit fearless. And those stories get smoothed out the more they're told. And also changed by the outcome. Spoiler alert, Tyler Adams, you did actually become a bloody good professional footballer. But was the really never a doubt in your mind, toilet? Not really. I can't think of back to a moment where it was like, oh, I'm not going to get that professional contract. And I think because I signed it so young also, that gave me the vision that wow, once I signed my first one then I got to get another one and keep working for the next one because there's always something next is always another step you can take in your game in the professional football world. So I think that's important to know also. What do you do with that then? I'm asking for a friend. What do I do with what? Doubt. You know, even though what it is, you're like, what? What is doubt? What do you do with doubt? 'cause everybody must feel it. What do you do.
