"Of the summer season but there are some restrictions in place his correspondent Sutton of Tasha Chen in Tybee island Georgia this morning parties are supposed to stay at least six feet apart we are seeing that happen and they're supposed to be groups of ten or fewer people in the department of natural resources from the state is patrolling to make sure that people are actually keeping their social distance in neighboring Alabama where hospitalizations in the overall number of infections have risen since April state health officials say they're worried as the state opens its casinos in churches and other businesses parking lots are filling up in many places it's rare to see people wearing face masks new coronavirus cases have dropped to zero in China for the first time since the pandemic began when Christopher this is the business of sports from Bloomberg radio adjacent Kelly you're listening to Bloomberg business of sports a little later on Michael Barr and Michael Lynch will be back with me we're gonna give you the number of the week also their takeaways from my interviews around the fitness business for now let's continue the conversation with equal knocks executive chairman Harvey speak back so are we I gotta ask you I mean you know you've been in this business for a while and as you say I mean this is always been something that's been front of mind for you and and clearly it resonates with with your members I do wonders you went through this process personally like what were the things that that sort of either surprised you were sort of jumped out at you may be a new innovation or or a new type of product or or what was it that if you look back on sort of this process of putting this plan together that that sort of jumps out at you must you know there's there's clearly a lot of lesson learned lessons learned I would say a relative or relevant to us is some of the things were more reinforcement but there were some surprises so on the on the reinforcement side how much love and passion it there are from our members and employees for our brands was really nice to feel and experience but how much they desire community we knew that we've always been about community but that desire is stronger than ever and the desire to come back and come back quickly we've surveyed our members are writers and seventy percent say they will come back soon as we open in my mind that's remarkably high despite all the unknowns right ahead that's it also I think very symbolic of the trust and confidence they they have been us so you know in in addition to community I think what we've all learned is you know there's no replacement for and I know you you are a a active participant in this regard is no replacement for for maintaining a healthy lifestyle right because that helps your immune system and so there's been an explosion of virtual fitness offerings some of them good a lot of the not so good but no regardless it just demonstrates the huge demand and we were already on this journey to marry the online and offline we had embarked over a year ago on this vision of being able to serve our community in a way that nobody else can do so what we believe is our our member our writer is moot basically mindset has moved to a no days off mindset and once the highest quality brands but they want to get a move across brands they want to be a move across modalities and they want to do it physically and digitally and so despite the explosion protection which it shows that the increasing and accelerating demand for living a healthy lifestyle it also shows that people want the online offline experience right and we're uniquely qualified to do that and so that's why we celebrate the launch of bars you know the first of its kind multi brand multi modality digital platform we've launched that complementary to our members during the closure period despite us not charging them even their dues we've had tremendous feedback there we've also accelerate the launch as part of that digital offering the at home sold bike which is also where we start delivering and people are very excited about and getting great feedback and and accelerating demand there but the biggest surprise was with respect to Burchell personal training and so we did not have a virtual personal training business before kopen nineteen before we closed and within sixty days we established a virtual personal training program which now has seventy percent of our trainers engaging on that platform we clearly know how many people is that roughly give or take Harvey how many peoples and it's it's it it's it's thousands really about the people yes I mean it's it's remarkable and and people love it and so you know if you think about what does that mean for the future well Chasen who typically might come to the club and work with his or her trainer two times a week in the club which is the norm and the reason why is on weekends he might be you know not it's close to the car because he comes close to where he works or because family plays a role now virtually can get a third session and so that's gonna help them optimize his results and so we so this explosion we set up this business literally overnight but what it says to us is and we enforces the vision that we were already on the path which is Hey there is a world here where in you always got to anticipate we've done a great job of anticipating what the consumer wants there is a world here where the future is I want to be a do it physically and digitally I want to do it across my favorite brands I want to do it because I want to do it across modalities I want to do it how I want it when I want where I want it but I wanted to be seamless right and we're uniquely qualified to do that and so that is something we were already on the past but based on what we've experience we know that we are more confident than ever that that's gonna be a big winning strategies for us in the years to come have you see that really good to talk with you good to catch up to you look forward to seeing you in person so guys you know two very different perspectives in some ways the same business but on opposite ends of the spectrum to some extent what do you make of the the fitness world these days and we talked a lot about professional sports but we also know that there's a huge huge business around you know keeping ourselves in shape Mike what did you think well it might take away first from Chris rondo was that the he was ahead of the game with his anti bacterial low hand cleanser that prevents a covert nineteen and then it's simply had met at that we had it by accident yeah but you know I think Jim's like specially planet fitness have been practicing social distancing for a long long time you know people are committed to doing what you don't want to sit down next to a weight lift the machine next to look for right now you want to get the ventures away from him right so I think that's already built in there right now and I think they've got an edge people or want to feel good about themselves and in in something of Harvey speed back talked about was the the mental well being of P. as well that are going through such a hard time between jobs and first responders and hanging around the house and that meditation he's noticed that people checking in and staying with their meditation part of their well being as much as their physical well being as well those are my two takeaways Mike about what you think well I have to admit is like listen I'd it is not because of it you know the gentleman that they're wanting to gyms are are great they are it's just that I have an apprehension of going to a gym right now yeah it you know it it's yes you can wipe it down as much as you can but you know that the covert nineteen pandemic out there this made me realize how this virus can spread and very easy and I hope one day we get the vaccine for it maybe that's when I'll go back to the gym look I think it's gonna be a huge debate and we were talking about it around our dinner table after I did these interviews and you know my wife is like I'm not in any hurry to go back I just not sure that and you know and and she you know goes to the gym and a fair amount in normal times whereas my seventeen year old who's basically created what we lovingly refer to now as his prison gym in our garage with just like some borrowed dumbbells and not even a real bench and he's literally like shocking his raps using his little sister's sidewalk chalk he's ready to go back as soon as it out like as soon as our local gym opens he's back there so you know this is a it's almost a microcosm of what we're seeing across the country in terms of how different people in different parts of the country and I think of different ages and all of those things tend to feel yeah I really was interested in that sort of compare and contrast and I was also fascinated by Harvey Steve act talking about you know this equinox standard that they're gonna try and said and you do wonder you know if what it takes to get people like you back in the gym my goal is to go this sort of gold standard of cleanliness or if as you say it's got to be much further down the line when you get to you know something where people feel safe because of a vaccine or some sort of medical breakthrough it.

"Night with the mayor surely sessions of Tybee island when the governor made the change your official statement said that you would pursue legal avenues to overturn that mandate that is there anything legally that you've discovered you can do R. if you currently still working on that we don't want to be appearing to be defiant and unreasonable end up with we don't want to be that gold mine has always been to have a United front United community that's what good leadership is about that's what good partnerships are about and we've done that we feel that we have have been very fortunate in having cooperation from other local governments from many senators and legislators countless doctors scientists military government officials are just so many people that that have just come out in support of what we're doing and trying to encourage us not to ban did not shift here to continue to do the right thing and we are going to point fingers at me our hands are clearly tied on on a lot of these issues and we you know had continued to plead with the governor and his staff to reconsider and I'm do this before it is too late to have the next two weeks everybody all the professionals who have started as far as you are getting our data are saying the next two weeks are critical in in trying to do everything we can to stop it what was the reaction when you first shut everything down are you believe that you're taking every step you can't believe me they were not popular decisions we had resistance from many but this time we're only that resistance turned around and said okay we're we're we're not making any money we're concerned we're not but we're willing to to give it up in the spirit of helping make a difference to keep this monstrous virus out of our community and and beyond our community so people were really really really becoming more and more committed man all there this made and they are not happy but for the majority I'm very supportive Monday morning at first light as we're hearing from surely sessions the mayor of Tybee island Georgia I think our listeners can hear how heartfelt your words are and I'm I'm hoping that anybody listening within driving distance of Tybee island will hear your words and heed your advice I can't imagine that the burden your caring right now knowing that that people's lives are at stake based on what what they do perhaps in just the next couple of days yes the next couple of days the next week not only for tidy before that I think about every small community every large city are I was touched when I woke up Saturday morning and that's what kind of led me to without not more vocal statement it which are they thought that it would be harder to Tybee residents who thought maybe we weren't doing enough that some of them didn't understand that we were not the ones making this decision and I wanted our Savannah community to understand you know what this is we don't support yes I never intended it to be a national issue I mean I think of our brands in Albany Georgia that have been devastated by the the number of cases not only positive cases the deaths and such a small community yet what what happened there so high yeah I think about all those communities who are in similar situations where the numbers are small but their lives matter I just I can't stress enough how important it is for leaders you can make a difference to do the right thing to save lives your community safe thank you letters services now that they are there for them they are their voices voices of people can't speak up but they're afraid and you know perhaps we should also talk to listeners in their cars right now who might be heading down I. ninety five from Connecticut or New York or New Jersey or Delaware or Maryland where there are a lot of cases and they're heading to Georgia thinking well I know there's a free open state down there maybe they should turn around and go back home and shelter in place I would courage and greatly today that I don't think it's safe to be on our beaches I don't think it's right to be anywhere where there is a potential for a large large gatherings I mean we don't have a hospital we don't have any type of help facility we don't have like a doctored official doctors office and yes if the people can look forward to two weeks or two months out and see what your choices today could impact your health your family help your neighbors your communities and our country hi is there anything that I haven't asked about that you think that people need to hear I think you're taking ownership for your choices and just being around reminding people that is a powerful tool that is a powerful that statement know that you can make a decision based on all of the information that you have and you don't have to listen to government one way or the other you get your choices could save your life and the lives of others but hopefully when it is over our society to form so we can get back to some kind of normalcy I don't think we'll ever have that kind of normal life that we have in your weight because we understand how quickly everything can change day by day we on Tybee ward invite our friends from all of those states that you mentioned the beyond the common visit Ireland and have a good beach experience we would love that but right now we just want you to be safe and stay at home all right mayor surely sessions of Tybee island Georgia we appreciate your time I know it's a it's a you have have a responsibilities are very busy appreciate your taking time to explain this to all the folks listening on first like to thank you very much thank you and and stay safe and stay well all of our listeners and you all right the fish had so much they're having that 'Total devastation': Hurricane slams parts of the Bahamas

"Will thank heavens hurricane Dorian is finally moving off the Bahamas it just sat there moving like a mile an hour over the whole Bahamas and they got hit really bad there was a life threatening storm surge of up to fifteen feet expected on grand Bahama island and Floridians were freaking out I have family in you know fort Lauderdale and clear water in you know not knowing if the hurricane was going to start moving towards Florida move out to sea I will I am blown away at how they could predict hurricane movement and they predicted that after the bombers it was going to make a right turn I mean it made a beeline it was going to do west I mean street west and then. it's stalled and rather than moving towards Florida is designed to make a right turn and now it is moving up the coast. but still gave huge punches to the Bahamas there's a door is when the tent city has backed off now it's down to a category two I thought I saw just recently was a three still but I think they just downgraded to a two. but now we're worried about the Florida Atlantic coast parts Georgia the Carolinas and even southeast Virginia. and so right now it's still near grand Bahama island the eye wall is pummel the island since Sunday night destructive winds catastrophic storm surge some of the pictures are coming in the Bahamas it is devastated just devastated. it basically had the bombs for over forty eight hours started the apple goes island Sunday morning. settlement point had sustained winds of sixty one miles an hour gusting up to eighty two miles per hour. and right now I believe the speed is down to about a hundred twenty miles per hour of the actual hurricane. and now Florida coast is scenes of destructive damage because of I mean it's about eighty miles from the coast and so you know the waves are huge. beach erosion has already Curtis flats at Flagler beach. National Weather Service weather channel meteorologist Jim Cantore document a damaged homes on Hutchinson island why because of pounding surf squall from out of perfume Dorian continue to wrap into parts of the Florida peninsula. because one visit force winds there now miles an hour arrived at Juno beach Florida. that's going to continue with gusts over sixty miles per hour to Tuesday outer rain bands are also still you know flooding the area and we could possibly have tornadoes along the coast so we have hurricane warnings right now in effect in Florida from Jupiter inlet to punch Verde beach including Mel born in Daytona beach Florida the warning is now but extended to South Carolina from north of at least beach to south Santee river in a hurricane warning still remains in effect for grand Bahama the abacus islands northwestern Bahamas include Freeport and grand Bahama. so hurricane warnings meaning that hurricane force winds remember category one is seventy four miles an hour so hurricane warnings mean that those winds are either already Corinne or expected somewhere within the warning area and that's going to be within a thirty six hour time frame. so a storm surge warning has been issued from land Tampa Florida to south Santee river South Carolina and that includes Daytona beach Jacksonville beach St Simons Tybee island Charleston South Carolina. so you know you would you would watch the weather I was I was glued to the weather channel all weekend and you would see people. walking behind a meteorologist sorry. I don't want to laugh at all because you know what people were doing they were trying to recreate those videos that are online have you guys seen those videos where you have. meteorologist reporters that are trying to look like they're holding on. and you know to find the winds and trying to you know hold their balance and they're screaming in the wind and then you see people walk behind them with an ice cream cone and wave like high. I right or you know I think there was one reporter that tried to claim this weekend that bodes in Florida were already push the shore by the storm. add their all these things being pushed on to the beach and you actually saw the votes are all tied up neatly and it was nice people walking by and you know even in you know smile and things like that and so clearly there's a lot of like you know whether reporting gone wrong people in a boat there's one I forget was one of those Kitty current but somebody was in a boat looking like she had to paddle around and then somebody walked right by her. in a single deep water. it all and then so it you know we know that you know the weather channel these meteorologist they have a job to do and storms are life threatening and they need to get people out and so they're not gonna show a person in a nice dry area tell everybody it's scary they're going to kind of show you know what they need pictorials because some people they just don't evacuate they just leave. Floridians a lot of them did not evacuate them they you know they were waiting for the hurricane advisory to blows my mind that the same age we could be that accurate I mean we were actually it was I was like I don't see how it's going to head towards Florida's commit towards Florida. so you don't think that it didn't hit Florida unfortunately you have that whole coast. that could get hit you know there's an argument that averages one across Florida in a day. we would cause less damage then riding up the coast to Jacksonville Charleston Wilmington Hatteras so the you know so you know we think it's going to be hitting and not really leaving are closed until Sunday heading areas near main and etcetera and at it's a battle on this was bad five people dead so far we're gonna be unfortunately hearing more as the crews are able to get into the Bahamas fully understand the devastation was just enormous this week as NASA but the nation week a lot of people in the Bahamas and Florida you know can't donate blood the Carolinas etcetera because a worried about the the storm and and blood shortages are expected that to happen especially after the bad summer NASA but the nation because the first week of September and as for governors from across United States United to you know help

"The north northeast of the Atlantic and accelerate the we did so all of a sudden you start seeing women the hurricane force wind gusted Norfork in the storms a hundred twenty miles this out so it's gonna probably get pretty rough yeah they were losing Joe all right so why is it moving so slow I mean we we are covered a lot of hurricanes together over the years about and I feel so awful well the people in the Bahamas I mean I'm not scared to death to get you know what a death toll update from that because it just stuck there forever yeah the the the interesting thing about that is you know I have clients in the bombers and we tried to warn them well in advance on this so hopefully things did everybody get out well I'm not sure because the the the person I talked to contact Nassau or you know we. save Hey this is going to happen to be a worse hurricane for Abaco in no grand Bahama and then the the authorities I have friends with the head of the Bahamian weather service I'm sure he was try to get those people out of their from three four days ahead but at least a what was the question by the way I guess no he's not I mean I why did it stay in one spot why is this thing that movie okay well as marvelous is met majestic as he stays locked their Cork in a stream and when the stream qual collapses the court doesn't going by the way only a a war you know storm chaser like Joe per story will look at a hurricane and thank god that is majestic I well I don't know the exact I mean look at look at the devastation all inspiring but you don't like what's going on underneath them that it's over land obviously but but again you know the old school but I'm an old school guy by young my dad urologists they taught me all these new methods you gotta try to invision what the total atmosphere looks like around the storm and so when the steering currents collapsed completely because this storm is trying to find a way to come north would like so it's working it's almost like a a tail back trying to figure out which hold on for a bus and truck and so what happens is it gets caught and it stops for a while and that this stopping was well protected I you know I I tweeted out something Friday night the Senate is gonna be twenty four to forty eight hours of this camera away a grand Bahama and that you know it's a storm slowly but look folks you see you see what happens here we had a storm in fifty four hurricane Carol it's stalled for two or three days around the Bahamas but a hundred fifty miles to the north so they did not get eventually Carol came up the profit is the number one talk so there are parallels if you look around you can see them and as you know that's what it that's why the storm was moving very fast might look I know this is close shade and I know you know people going to do what they're gonna do and some people are stubborn and they say well I wrote out this hurricane that hurricane I just out. my advice is there's no amount of property that's worth your life it's just not worth it and I think everybody should heed the warnings and the worst case scenario is you went away from the hurricane that was coming for nothing okay well what your waist a little time you can go to cracker barrel when you drive and I mean you got options here yeah well the other thing is to remember that if you start plugging your house is surrounded by water all these people going to get is a I'll be there at that good choice can help you know they that that's a pointed out all right we'll see on TV tonight right weather bell dot com jobs starting eight
