I read your piece at newsweek which has gone viral a kovic nineteen patient response to the mayor's charge your selfish about the vaccination. What a ride. You've been on my friend mike. I got covert. My wife got coburn and my daughter got code. But i got it hard. Ultimately had blood clots light pneumonia. Thanks to great medical. Help i was. I was cured. And i'm fine now but while i was laying in the hospital bed recovering my mayor in my little town of oxford. Mississippi got on a national news network and she was asked by the anchor. What about people's personal choice. What about it's my body. It's my life and she said well if patients want to choose not to take the vaccine and be selfish and take up hospital beds. Well then. they're not concerned about the greater good. And i'm thinking i'm laying in a hospital bed and she knows nothing about me or my family so i said i'm going to write a letter to her and my letter was simple. I told her about my life and my family. My mother-in-law lives with us. Mike and she's seventy. We decided that she had four co morbidity. He's she smoked lung problems. We convinced her and every senior. We know to get the vaccine. We're not anti actors and we're not luddites mine. Situation was i took the first shot. I have to worry about more people getting the vaccine so we can get to herd immunity if i do contract cova. It's not gonna hurt me as much. But i have to worry about everyone else i encounter. I'm not going to run around without a mask. I'm not gonna go back to large places with lots of people indoors and possibly pass germs from one another. I'm still going to be safe. Covid vaccine: PM to have AstraZeneca jab as he urges public to do the same

"When johnson talks about the uk's world-beating response to covid nineteen vaccine pogrom passes muster. It's been an unqualified success or one of the reasons. His conservative party are so far ahead in the polls over twenty five million brits have received their job so fall but the government unexpectedly announced show fall in the number of vaccines delivered in april juice. Supply issues and the debate has a geopolitical angle. To given the you struggling with its own vaccine rollout slovan the line. The european commission president on the block might even consider export controls. All options are on the table. We are in the crisis of the century. And i'm not ruling out any anything for now because we have to make sure that europeans are vaccinated as soon as possible so sarah. Let's begin with the overall state of the uk's vaccine pogrom based on what was set out in december. It's pretty much all going to plan fairly high levels of takeover ninety four percent i believe and the government is insisting that all over fifty will have had their first job by the middle of april. So what's the problem. Well a week ago we would have said. This was indeed the most Astonishingly amyloid success and a sign of vessel. Buoyant moved around it. Was that the with some very clear briefing to a couple of the saturday newspapers suggesting that we were actually going to move to the over forty's much sooner than expected so it was a bit of a jolt to find out on wednesday that in fact. Nhs people involved in the program had been told that they must hold booking any new appointments throughout april because the been a sudden very significant reduction in the supplies available so that really has put the first serious dent in the narrative which right from december the eight. I think it was the day. That william shakespeare became one of the first two vaccine as now suddenly. The government is in the unaccustomed position of having to explain what's happening and explain why some of the public expectations that they'd raised so hard may not be met to be fair to the government. They still absolutely insisting they're on track with the two big dates that they've set for this program that all over fifty should be vaccinated by the middle of april. And all adult britons. Who wants a job will have had it at the end of july. But there's no question that it's been a difficult political management problem for them this week and very much not the position that they'd hoped to be in the club. Let's have a look at why this might be happening and seven. I spent a lot of this week speaking to people. Whitehall trying to figure out exactly what was going on behind the scenes with matt. Hancock gave us a of clarity in the house of commons and the government is pinning own production issues. The first one is this batch of one point seven million jobs that we sent back for testing and the second thing is the supply from the soham institute of india which again the governor's put down to supply issues but others are saying that actions being blocked by modi's government from shipping out to the uk. Exactly it is pretty opaque what's happening. There are two elements. Here that can hold up. Supplies one is the genuinely technical difficulties in producing a complex biological process. I mean it's not straightforward zanu vaccine and a lot of the manufacturing sites haven't made this sort of marin a vaccine before it scale factor. You could say none of them have because this is the first one. That's the fiso won. The astra zeneca at novartis vaccine is also level to a complicated process. So there are technical supply issues and then there at the political ones. You alluded to and i don't know whether the serum institute of india supply has been blocked for political reasons because india was having rather a good downturn in covert cases. But that's turning up again. Unfortunately and there are feelings. That indian government wanted to have it at home. This is so. I think if we look at the context of this a lot of it is actually not that much of a serious problem that we were crunching the numbers this week and april is a significant moment in the vaccine program for the uk. Because yes they were vaccinated all over fifty which according to people like christie chief medical officer of england which uses ninety nine percents of deaths on messages the pressure on the nhc s. But eneko you have to install the second jobs. Really the po- gum began to scale up towards the end of january and eleven week window. The nhl is set between the first and second doses. That really kicks in april and but hancock said this week that really still going to be delivering about fourteen million jobs throughout april which is low though. It's been in march but it's still a pretty high number so it's probably good to keep it in context with feels really what's gone wrong. Here is expectations that the rogue briefing about forty s really feels like delivers come off the bush tourism bush. Johnson's tried to restrain for much of twenty twenty. One yes and i think some. Nhs officials were less than delighted about that huge raising expectations last weekend. In a way. I think this was always going to be a difficult point for the program. It was absolutely predictable that at the point at which second doses to scale up there was going to be a deep in first doses. So it's perhaps unfortunate that there wasn't more subtle public preparation. You're absolutely right international standards even in april. We're still going to be doing more. Vaccinations than many of our counterparts. So it's particularly unfortunate wasn't better preparation. Because i think in the minds of a lot of britain's the will now be a sense of this program isn't doing well it's stumbled. It didn't have to be this way that it could have been very differently presented. And after all as i said the government is still on track to meet those two deadlines that it says now clive. We need to put this in the context of europe as well and we heard from s. the von d'alene at the top. That and you still really struggling with its vaccine vo loud but the most baffling things. She's seen this week. Is the story about the astra zeneca job and how effective or side effects. That may have in this concern. Over blood clots we heard from the ama from the nhra in the uk from the world health organization. All saying there are no concerns about blood. Clots and ashes annika vaccine yet at didn't stop lawson countries from halting giving out the doses. It's a very complicated picture on side effects. At least the spotlight turned away from efficacy. Before countries in continental europe were worrying that the astrazeneca vaccine wouldn't work well enough to older people. I think the efficacy questions have more or less be answered now. The spotlight is on whether they're adverse side effects and a few of those have been discovered there. These two different sorts of blood disorders do with abnormal clotting thrombosis that have been detected in people who just been vaccinated in norway in germany elsewhere on continental europe. The numbers are tiny. I would say fewer than twenty around the continent. Investigation is still continuing. There's no proven link with the vaccine. But a lot of vaccine knowledge ists the might be a link. But that is no reason to stop the vaccination program when it's saving tens of thousands of lives probably and people have said that just by halting for a few days the astrazeneca vaccination and continental europe. This week until the european medicines agency said it was okay that would have cost lives. It loves cost lives directly because people weren't getting vaccinated and it also probably unfortunately of cost lives indirectly because all the publicity about ad side effects will just undermined confidence in the vaccine

FDA vaccine advisers recommend Johnson & Johnson's single-dose COVID-19 vaccine

"Truckloads of the johnson and johnson corona virus vaccine will soon roll out across the country that after the fda gave a thumbs up to what will be the third vaccine in emergency use in the united states. The fda is dr. Peter marks made the announcement saturday night guided by careful review of the science and data. We've determined that the vaccines known of potential benefits clearly outweigh its known and potential risks. Johnson and johnson expects to ship twenty million doses in the united states this month and a total of one hundred million by the end of june. The vaccine has two big advantages over the madeira. And pfizer vaccines now in use. It can be shipped and stored at refrigerator temperatures and it only requires one shot rather than to on the other hand studies have shown the other two vaccines to be slightly more effective overall. President biden. stop medical adviser. Dr anthony found she told. Abc's this week. This is a good vaccine. I think we need to pull away from this comparing and parsing numbers until you compare them head to head. Just be really grateful that we have three really efficacious vaccines. Most serious studies showed one dose was eighty five percent protective against the most severe covid nineteen illness and that protection remained strong. Why were not vaccinated and I was going to go into a clinic and they said, Hey, we have J and J now Well, you can wait three weeks or so to get another one. I would take the one That is available to me now, because the quicker you get vaccinated, the more quickly you will be protected, and you will add on to the overall protection in your county in your country. "The fda is getting ready to authorize a third covid vaccine emergency use in this country. This one this vaccine is from pharmaceutical giant. Johnson and johnson. And if it's authorized it would join vaccines from pfizer and madera in the us vaccination campaign. But here's the thing those other. Vaccines require two doses. This vaccine from johnson and johnson needs only one single dose to be effective. Npr science correspondent. Joe palca is here to tell us how effective good morning joe morning. well one dose. that's exciting. How good is this new vaccine. Oh it's good. It was sixty six percent effect of overall in preventing moderate to severe disease and eighty five percent protective against more severe diseases. Now for people with good memories. They'll say wait. A minute i heard that madonna and pfizer wasn't that closer to ninety five percent effective and the answer is yes they were higher but those vaccines were tested before. Some of the new variants began circulating and prevent any five percent of severe critical. Disease is really good since the goal of the vaccines is to keep people out of the hospital and keep them from dying and the other thing about this vaccine is mentioned in the intro is that it's one dose which makes the logistics of getting it to people a lot easier to remember to come back so public. Health officials are looking forward to being able to distribute the j. vaccine. This is how anthony fauci chief medical adviser to the president. Put it on. Nbc's today show to have them come in and be in the mix with the other. Two is is nothing but good news. Nothing but good news. Foul cheat now. The process usually is before a vaccine gets authorized in advisory board has to approve it right. Well yes well. Though he has to is probably an exaggeration. It doesn't absolutely has to. The fda can approve things on its own lookout but like the other two vaccines. The the fda wanted to be extremely transparent. There were some questions about whether they were rushing the vaccine to the market before they knew it was safe and they want to assure the public that this was being looked at carefully so that committee has been around for a while. it's known in the trade as burg. Pack the vaccines and related biological products. Advisory committee i love that name ver- pack made of scientists and doctors with a variety of specialization relating vaccines before the meeting. Fda provides the committee with its analysis and they also make that analysis of the public So i asked. Bruce gallon president of global immunization at sabin vaccine institute. What he made of the analysis of the johnson and johnson vaccine. I didn't see anything in it. That i would think is going to be a show stopper for packed. Wanna recommend that. Fda act on so gallon is predicting the ver- pack will give the vaccine a thumbs up. How many doses. Johnson and johnson have ready to ship out. Well not as many as people had hoped a year ago when started trying to make these vaccines they all said. All we're gonna do this at risk manufacturing which means we're going to start making vaccine before they even knew it was going to be authorized even if it worked. And then they'd throw away if it didn't work and the government gave the money to do this but even with that company's still don't have the kind of inventory. The country needs in the case of johnson. Johnson they have about four million doses ready to go out the door and expect to have twenty million by the end of march and one hundred million by the end of june and remember. This is a one dose vaccine so one hundred million doses is one hundred million people vaccinated which is very big. Deal leslie and briefly. What is the timeline here. When the fda issued the emergency use authorization it could be any minute. I mean they knew it right after the meeting. They could do it tomorrow. That could do it in a few days. It'll be soon. I think if the committee gives a thumbs

Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine deemed "safe and effective" by the FDA

"And johnson. It's been shown that they're vaccine is effective at preventing hospitalizations and severe effects of covid. Nineteen this from scientists at the fda we're seeing about. I think it's sixty six percent effective when it comes to moderate to severe cases of covid nineteen so matthew. Tell a little bit more about what we're hearing with. His johnson and johnson vaccine right so what happened. Is that johnson. Johnson released data about a month ago. You know press release but the process for evaluating these vaccines is that they go through the fda and the fda really unique in the world independently looks at the data and re analyzes the data that the company produces and its own report and then hold a public meeting which will be happening friday and so the documents before the public meeting came out and they had some good news both some really clear data on hospitalizations and a general sense of approval from the fda researchers. Sometimes they're not as positive so it looks like this may be another option now. The big plus is on. This is one. It's a one shot dose. So you don't have to go back for a second jab in the arm and also doesn't need to be kept frozen like the pfizer derna vaccines do so shipping and handling of all of this will be a lot easier much easier to transport and that's a big advantage. It does not look like we're gonna have a huge amount of supply the start off with so it doesn't dramatically change how fast we're going to be any shots into people's arms but for a lot of people i think in a lot of experts i talked. You think this'll be a great option. It's one and done. I think some of the numbers. I saw the might have about four. That are produced right now. Ready to send out so it gets approved. They can get those out really quick but it wouldn't be until april possibly where they can really ramp up production to start distributing that right and will also be getting over that where they're hundreds of millions of doses of the two vaccines have the madonna and fayza biontech vaccines. That are expected to arrive in the us by july. So there's gonna be a lot more vaccine available. The jj supply will ramp up and we'll be getting more of those other two vaccines that leaves. There's a vaccine coming from nova vacs. We don't really know about how much will getting the early results issued press. Release again good and we're waiting for. Us results on the astra zeneca vaccine. Now some good news. With his johnson and johnson one is its effectiveness against these variants. That we've been hearing a lot about so it fared better than expected when it comes to those. I the way to interpret. That is we'd seen some results and the new results that they showed today look a bit better than what we'd seen in terms of variants. There's still does seem to be decreased. Efficacy against the south africa variant. Three five. Which is really the one that we're all worried about but it did look better than what we've seen previously and what j. j. has said it seems like with those variants. This vaccine is still preventing severe disease and hospitalization. Which are the key things. We've always wanted from vaccine here. The idea that you'd prevent a symptomatic infection or mild cases kind of bonus compared to just making sure that people end up in the hospital hospitalizations numbers were good on that front. What did we see when it comes to side effects. I saw that there were a few unexpected side effects. Although these are very rare you know but The expecting side effects the kind of pain in the arm the headache fatigue. That's pretty much in line with the other two vaccines. We have that right now. There were some rare events that occurred more often in the vaccine in the placebo group. Keeping in mind that forty thousand people were in this trial. There were fifteen serious blood clots including some. Dvd's in that exciting compared to ten in the placebo group. That's something the fda plans to monitor there was also some rini ears in the vaccine group and not in the placebo group. So that's kind of an odd one that will wanna watch again. This is really a prelude to friday win. Some of the top experts in the world are going to gather on zoom call and go over these data that the fda assembled we'll be live blogging that stat. That's when we really find out a lot about any medical product. It's it's one of the amazing things. The fda does now an interesting thing in all of this so public health officials might have a messaging problem when it comes to pumping the johnson and johnson. One out when we're seeing guys like pfizer maderna's say that their vaccine is ninety five percent effective against corona virus. Just listening to numbers right. This says sixty six percent. So what are they going to have a challenge in getting people to want to take this one over the other or you know how how to work out. It's really important to realize that particularly between those three vaccines. The getting vaccine is much better than not getting a vaccine. The change vaccine may be on par after a second dose and that study is being done but unlike visor during the second dose is going to be months after the first and then also slows down the study. She gotta wait right for people to get their second dose. So we're not expecting those data until kinda summerish but the big thing is for a lot of people. There was also the appeal of a single dose here. And i don't think we should understate that. And the effect on severe disease is big so the problem is gonna be the in the initial rollout. You really want people to take whatever vaccine. They're giving because being vaccinated is so much better than not being vaccinated. And that is part of the path to get in the world back to normal and public health. Authorities are absolutely going to have to articulate that now again because there's not going to be that much supply of this initially. They're going to have time for a learning curve right now. the demand for vaccines clearly outstrips supply. That's why you're hearing so many stories of people desperately logging on trying to get vaccine. What scott gottlieb used to run. The fda has raised the issue of you know. We're we're going to reach a point where the people who wanna get vaccinated we'll have been vaccinated and we're still going to need to vaccinate more people and that's when convincing people who are less sure to take vaccine in to take the vaccine that's available is going to become more of an issue last question briefly pfizer moderna vaccines are based on 'em a. What kind of platform is the johnson and johnson. When using this like theatrics annika vaccine is called an ad no virus which is a kind of virus that is used to the same kind of ideas marin a the instead of traditional vaccines were you inject the protein that your immune system sees and then learn to recognize an attack. These sneak something into your body that makes a lot of proteins. You make a lot more protein and then the body recognizes that an attack it in this case they're using this virus which is kind of a cold virus to sneak some genetic material in and that makes the spike protein from the sars virus which your body then learns to recognize and thereby has antibodies that attack the virus

F.D.A. Analyses Find Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Works Well

"May soon be available in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration could decide as soon as this weekend to authorize a vaccine made by pharmaceutical giant Johnson and Johnson for emergency use. The FDA today released its evaluation of the new vaccine and NPR's Joe Palka joins us to describe what they found Hijo. Hi, Ari. So there were a lot of details in the FDA is evaluation, but bottom line. Was it positive or negative about it? Well, they don't exactly give conclusions like that. But general, you'd have to say that the analysis was positive. The FDA based its judgment on a large study involving some 40,000 participants that was carried out primarily in the United States, South Africa and Brazil. Now, this vaccine only requires a single shot, so participants either got the vaccine or a placebo. And what researchers found was that overall, the vaccine efficacy was about 66% in preventing moderate to severe cove in 19. And 85% against more serious disease. Stacy Schultz Terry is a professor of infectious diseases at ST Jude Children's Research Hospital, and she took a look at the FDA analysis. I did not see anything that would make me pause in recommending that somebody would go get this shot. Joe tell us more about that 66% number because a lot of people have zeroed in on that to say, Wait. Does this mean it's less effective than the Fizer and Madonna vaccines, which reported close to 95% of efficacy? Yeah, The numbers suggest that but you have to have a little context here. First of all, you have to remember that. Initially people would have been satisfied with the vaccine that was just 50% of efficacy. So this is the first vaccine to come. If this had been the first vaccine to come along, people would have been thrilled. Second vaccines behave differently when the rolled out to millions of people, and so there may be changes in the numbers going forward and third variants have popped up around the world. And Schultz Kerry says the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is the first to be tested against those and it did well, African see against the virus circulating in the U. S Good African see against thesis South African and the Brazilian variance as well. And the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is easier to store and distribute than the other two. Tell us about that. Well, yes, I mean, the first obvious thing is that the only requires one shot And that means people don't have to come back. You don't have to chase after them to make sure they get a second shot, so that makes logistic easier. And second of all, it's not as it's easier to store. It doesn't require these special freezers that the modern a vaccine requires. And so what happens next? We said there could be emergency authorization as soon as this weekend. Well, the process works like this. The FDA receives a bunch of material from the company and then they evaluated and that's what they released today and then before they make a decision, they convened a group called the Vaccine Advisory Committee. And they will meet on Friday to discuss and evaluate and two over the data, and by the end of the day, they'll issue some sort of a recommendation to the FDA and the FDA generally follows the recommendations of this advisory committee. And how much of a difference is this likely to make in the supply situation if there are three circulating rather than to now? Well, it's going to make a difference. Maybe not right away. There's going to be a few million three or four million doses released almost immediately if the vaccine is approved or authorized. 20 million. They expect by the end of March and 100 million by the end of June, so it's not going to solve the problem right away. But it will certainly help NPR's Joe

A Massachusetts congressman congressman who has received both doses of the Fizer Corona virus vaccine has tested positive for the virus. Just the same. Here's Andrew Stewart. The office of Democrats Stephen Lynch says the lawmaker had a negative test result before attending President Biden's inauguration. The office also says Congressman Lynch's positive test result came after a staff member in his Boston office tested positive earlier this week, a statement says Congressman Lynch's not displaying any symptoms of covert 19, the Massachusetts Democrat, will self quarantine and vote by proxy in Congress in the coming week. That is correspondent Andrew Stewart reporting Congress and Lynch becomes the second member of state's congressional delegation. Have covert. This is a sorry new time Now for the O'Reilly update Message of the day. Can Donald Trump make a political comeback? Well, the turtle snapped. Powerful Senator Mitch McConnell, a k A. The paternal Is not opposing the impeachment trial of President Trump signaling the two men are no longer happy together. If you do not understand that reference, shame. There is no doubt that the traditional leaders of the Republican Party want nothing further to do with Donald Trump. However, they have a problem because so many Americans continue to support him and believe he is being treated unfairly by the establishment. So the turtle and other GOP power brokers should be very careful if they want to keep their power. President Trump is not a man to be easily dismissed. Road back to authority for Mr Trump is paid by just one person, Joe Biden and I'm not talking about running for president again, which is a long shot, but not impossible. For Donald Trump. No, I'm talking about political influence and credibility. The conniving Nancy Pelosi in Charles Schumer well understand that President Trump will retain people power. That's what is driving this absurd second impeachment. Donald Trump. Did encourage Americans to protest the election results. Absolutely he did that. But he did not. Ever contemplate violence, especially that occurred on January 6th. Maybe he should have contemplated that. But a misjudgment even when it's drastic is not a removable a fence for a president. Therefore, the latest impeachment is designed for just one thing to finish Trump forever in the political arena. At this point, the betting odds are that Mr Trump will not be convicted in the Senate. Humor needs 16 Republican senators to support the Democrats. Ah, few, like Mitt Romney are salivating to cancel Trump, but most are not. Now back to President Biden. The smart play would have been for him to discourage impeachment in the name of national unity. Instead, Biden did his best impression of punches pilot and stood aside. Are you surprised it would have taken courage to go up against the howling left wing mob. The overreach by Democrats and their media allies is just getting started. And it is here where Donald Trump might benefit. First to cancel culture. This despicable trend is owned exclusively by the left. The cruelty on unfairness of the effort is obvious to any decent person. More traction to cancel thugs get the more anti liberal backlash. There will be immigration soon the southern border will be under siege again because President Biden is sending open borders signals. That chaos will anger many Americans. Finally, the economy already, gas prices are rising because oil companies know Mr Biden will hurt them. So the energy moguls are stockpiling cash and that hurts working people. I could list many other examples. But here's the headline The President Biden's liberal policies fail, and that's almost a given. Americans will be looking for someone to stop the madness. And it will not be The turtle. I'm Bill O'Reilly and I approve that message by writing. It disagree. I'd like to hear from you Bill it. "Probably global News it I got your Paul. Thanks. Impeachment trial of Donald Trump has begun. The article of impeachment has been delivered to the U. S Senate, saying that Donald Trump incited the attempted insurrection at the Capitol, violent, seditious acts to interfere with a peaceful transition of power and remains a threat to the safety of the United States if ever he were to hold office again. China's President Xi Jinping, is warning of a new Cold War if the Globe does not abandon ideological prejudice. Hongkong's government is okay. The use of the Fizer covert 19 vaccine says it meets the safety, efficacy and quality requirements for emergency use. California's lifted the stay at home order, putting most of the state back into its highest tier of readiness. That sounds a little bit counterintuitive, but it was higher than that, Whether it's stay at home, eh, So what this does is allow outdoor dining and personal care business able to re open. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says supplies of the vaccine need to ramp up mass vaccination sites have been put on hold from opening. Dr Anthony Fauci says he's very worried about the push to the lay administering the second dose of Hold it 19 vaccines to speed up immunizations, he says. It makes no sense because people don't get full efficacy until the second dose so that nobody would be covered. Reassessment February 15th and North Korea's top diplomat in Kuwait is secretly defected with his family to South Korea, where they've been living since 2019 Rio Hume Grow is one of the highest level regime officials to defect in recent years in San Francisco. I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bloomberg Bloomberg opinion informed perspectives and expert data driven commentary on breaking news. And it's 9:50 P.m. Monday evening on Wall Street, and it's time to check in now with Bloomberg opinion. We're joined by opinion columnist Justin Fox. And he's been writing about why cloth masks may no longer be a reasonable alternative to surgical masks and Justin Deep breath here, Getting people to wear masks in the Western Hemisphere in the first place was a weirdly major effort. Do we really need to be having this conversation? Is it does it useful? I mean, I don't know that we need to be forcing it like Angela Merkel is in Germany, where now to go on public transit are in the stores. You gotta have either a surgical mask or 95. Respirator. But I do think it's worth at least pointing out that cloth masks seemed to be just a good as any other math. Worth keeping. If you're infected from keeping you from infecting other people, because most of that comes from actually expelling, spit, and it's not and all sorts of other great things in a mask and stop that. But when Virus particles, start floating, get aerosolized and go floating through the air. It seems like overall that medical mask which are actually made for this purpose are better at keeping them out in cloth masks. I'm sure you can put together a cloth mask that does just as good a job but on the whole The evidence seems to point towards surgical masks. And, um, and, of course, the respirators working better. Well, the N 95 is interesting because some models have kind of an exhaust port. So it it protects the wearer very well from inhaling anything that may be contaminated. Fuel it out, Bryce. I mean, so that's kind of a design flaw. Does that need to be addressed before people begin to adopt something like that? Well, I mean, people should not be using those for covert those those exist for like, if you're you know, working, building a house or something, and there could be a lot of sawdust. They totally inappropriate in medical situations and always have been And I don't You know that That's another informational thing else. See, I used to see more of that a couple months ago here in New York. I don't hardly ever see anybody wearing those anymore. I think people have figured that out. I mean, New York is a place where everybody wears masks everywhere. And if you're out if if what you're doing is walking the dog and you want to make sure you don't seize on people, then wear cloth mask. That's what I was just out walking the dog. That's what I had on. But I think One of the store getting on the subway. If you're concerned about protecting yourself overall, you're probably better off with a non cloth mask. Of course, cloth masks became popular due to global shortage of surgical masks. What's the availability like of surgical masks now? I mean, they seem to be everywhere. I you know, One issue is whether some of them may be terrible. Um, and what kind of inspired me on this is there's this really useful paper? That's been making the rounds since April. The lead author is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur Jeremy Howard, who's down teaching it Think University of San Francisco and he and He recently co authored an article in the Atlantic, saying You would be really helpful if the FDA and the government here in the U. S made a bit more effort to try toe certify which mass are actually good and which ones aren't Um, so there that so a lot of what we're discussing around the virus has been about vaccine. Has there been anything written or what do we know that once a person is inoculated should they continue to wear Mask. Is it possible for someone whose immune system may be up to the task of fighting against SARS cov to Kim, the mucus still contain The virus. And could they potentially distributed if they didn't wear a mask? Um, I mean, it seems like about five. Yeah, There's there's still some people 5% of the people getting the vaccine. Now. That's People. Some of the people getting the vaccine are still getting the disease. They're all getting minor cases, but they still have it and it's not certain that the people who are showing no symptoms at all are all You don't have it. So yeah, I would say for now, keep wearing the masks on D I think in a place you know, it's also very useful. Just have Social norm be Everybody wears a mask for now. I don't I'm hoping it won't be too much longer. Um, you know the vaccines work and incidents is falling pretty quickly here in the U. S. But who knows? With these new variants floating around? Yeah. They forgot your glasses, right and other things. But, you know, this is the thing that matter what people are wearing. You see them using them wrong anyway, You know you're taking them off to talk on the phone, taking them off the political acids. Steam up, slipping below the nose. How do you communicate to people? This is important. Um You know, partly by example, I don't yell at people or anything in the streets of New York or anywhere, but it at the same time. I think people have gotten much better about it here, and it's partly because Things are more dangerous here than they were over summer where there was almost no incidents of the disease. You know, in the fight, you know, I wear glasses and it's a pain. But I've sort of learned out if you press if you pull them up really high and you press the glasses down on him. It creates a seal and you don't fog up your glasses, please. I'm so looking forward to not having to deal with that anymore. But It could be done. Are you sensitive to the price in the market right now, when when the pandemic came on, and there was a real shortage when you paid a premium, I mean, there were people. Hawking these things on Amazon and Amazon retaliated because in many cases people were being gouged. Have we reached a kind of Ah, normal level and pricing? I mean, I haven't been shopping for 95 type masks for Plane procedure masks or surgical masks. They're pretty cheap. Yeah, I just don't think there is no shortage of those anymore. I mean, part of it is just that China is the world's biggest producer and exporter, And there was that. Brief period early last year, where they thought they needed all their masks for themselves. And now, clearly, they don't have a big problem with coveted. So they've been they've gotten back to exporting and then interesting people like Ford Motor Company in the U. S have started producing them as well. That's right. Some of that may have been done under the prior administration under the Defense Authorization Act. I can't recall. Maybe you could. Yeah, I don't think they I don't think any anything mass production ever got put under that. But definitely companies were encouraged to do that. But you know, and I don't think the Ford Mass have made a huge difference Overall, although they everybody at the inauguration got 31. We'll see where we go from here. Justin. Thank you for being with US Opinion columnist Justin Fox with us here on daybreak Asia. That'll do it for today's show, thanks to the.

Should Europe Hey, less money for a China virus vaccine developed in America with the help of our tax dollars, nine billion of our tax dollars. Well, it turns out that Europe is paying less for the Corona virus. Vaccines. 24% less for every single dose of the Fizer vaccine. Now the reason I bring this up Is that, as I've said before, we're not talking about a charity case. We're not talking about Sudan. We're not talking about Ethiopia. We're talking about the European Union nearly as prosperous as the United States of America. And yet for some reason, a vaccine developed by American companies here in America, I know there was some other involvement of other foreign companies and foreign countries. But the fact is, we did the lion's share of the work American companies in America with American tax dollars and we cleared the way of the bureaucracy. Because, understand if you think our bureaucracy is bad, Take a look of the European Union. They make our bureaucracy look like nothing by comparison. And what happened. Donald Trump cleared the way and I know that a lot of you say, Well, you just say that because you like Donald Trump? No, I'm saying it because it's true. I talked to doctors way back in January, February and March as it became clear that this pandemic was going to arrive in the United States, and I asked him how long is it going to take to produce a vaccine and they said optimistically? 18 months. You know, maybe two years. Some vaccines, they told me took five years. Nobody believed that it would be ready in November. At least none of the president's critics did. All you have to do is go back about two months and take a look at the predictions that Donald Trump said We will have a vaccine in November. Now he thought it would come right before the election day. Instead, it came a week later. Okay. He's off by a week, but the major media As recently as a couple of months ago was saying there is no way in the world that a vaccine will be approved before the end of the year. It'll likely be next summer and instead as usual, Donald Trump was proved right. I even got experts on the show so that I wanted you to understand why this was able to happen, and most of the reason was get government out of the way. Now you're going to say large. That sounds like the same broken record. You play all the time. The government is usually the problem when it comes to pollution when it comes to housing. When it comes to medicine government is not this the answer. It is the problem As Ronald Reagan famously said, what was true because when we talked to the medical folks about it, they said, Listen. The way you usually get a vaccine approved is that a company goes out and does the research and does all the legwork and then they start doing vaccine trials? And they do a lot of things that could happen simultaneously, but they do them one at a time, like one train car after another, and you don't deal with the second train car until the first train cars gone by, and what Donald Trump managed to do was get multiple tracks running at the same time that took the sign off of the government. I don't want to ask you something. We get a lot of naysayers on this program. Who would disagree with me all day long and twice on Sunday. That's okay. We invite naysayers to call the show, but I would ask him. Do you think you would have had that same clearing out the bureaucracy and cutting the red tape from a president like Obama from a president like I know it's hard to imagine Joe Biden. But if he takes the oath of office in January, do you think he's going to be the kind of president that would clear the decks and say we're going to do this one a different way? We're gonna allow private industry. To go out and develop something and we're gonna make that process speed up by simply clearing the government out of the way. You still have the safety protocols, but there are a lot of things in the private sector. We're private companies. And you know this is true in your own workplace. You say we get a job done faster because we know how to doom or than one thing at the same time and still do it well. In fact, I'll bet you know individual workers and you say, How does that Carpenter managed to frame the houses? He does so fast and it's because he's just quick. He understands how to measure he understands how to cut. He understands how to not make mistakes. He understands that you don't have to do one thing. And then when you're all done with that one thing, move onto thing. Number two. That is exactly the way the government bureaucracies operate. And there's a reason that the private sector doesn't operate that way. I mean, imagine two companies, you know, they both say, Well take take the example of building a house one says We're gonna build a house for you. We'd like to contract this is what we're going to charge and a second company says Oh, We could do the house twice as fast and we'll do it for less money. And you say, Well, that sounds attractive. But how do you make that happen? And you say Well, if you build a house and I've been through the construction of the house, the house we built for my in laws And we had to dig the foundation and I actually took part in digging the foundation, not by hand. We use some machinery. But we did some hand digging as well. And then you have somebody cut and come and put in forms and then you pour the concrete and then you have somebody come in to do the rough plumbing. And then you framed the house and then you sheet the house and then you insulate the house and then you have somebody doing sheet Rock. I was amazed the contractor we hired for a feed. You know, I like doing some of the work, but I know what I'm too stupid to do most of the work I said, how does this happen so quickly? He said. I pay when the supplies arrived. Many contractors say we'll make those payments later on, just invoice us and he says, we will get several things going at once there. It may be possible that you've got somebody doing rough plumbing in a brand new house and somebody doing wiring, and then somebody else doing something else. You don't have to do them one after the other. Sometimes you can actually do several things at the same time. Now you can imagine the house where somebody digs a foundation, and then it just sits there for a week. And then somebody puts in forms for concrete. And then it sits there for a week. And then somebody pours the concrete and it sits there for a week. And then somebody does the rough plumbing. And when that's done, maybe a week later, you start the rough electrical work, and then you start cheating it and then you start insulating it, and then you start doing the sheet rock on the inside and put in the windows in If you did all those things with a few, even a few days in between each of those steps, it could take you twice as long to build a house. Now. Imagine doing that with the vaccine or you're actually capable of moving the process along faster, So the final job gets done sooner And frankly, it gets done better as well. "So the federal budget is, by the way. Welcome back situation with Michael Brown federal budget is about $4.4 trillion When I left the afternoon show. Right? Tuned in tow. Fox News. I don't know why my tune in to Fox News. I am right there, right there was talking about Huh? In their panel was talking about what the new stimulus package might look like. And it's about three quarters of a billion dollars. You know, billion dollars here trillion dollars there. That's money we're going to spend once again. Mitch McConnell was quoted to saying. Why don't we just go ahead and pass everything that we that we agree upon and those things that we don't agree upon? Well, let's wait till the new administration comes in, and we'll do another package them. We're just gonna keep doing these packages. Think about this. So so we've got not one vaccine. The two vaccines. We then have also announced the news. Today We have home testing that you'll know your results at home without a prescription and 15 to 20 minutes without you covered 19. Yet we're told also that despite vaccines Despite home testing. Despite all of these things You heard at the top of the hour news. Tom must have talking about the fact that Michael Hancock says that well, you know, we can't have you people in inside dining because that's all the transmission is. Well, you know if we have all the vaccines We have home testing. If we have all of that. How about instead of spending money we don't have. How about we just let people go back to work? That we opened things back up. They're never gonna let us open back up until finally This friend of mine said today until finally people get fed up with him. My God. I would've thought you'd been fed up with it by now. But apparently not. Well, let's go back to the federal budget. $4.4 trillion In the panel of the Bret Bear on that whatever shows on Fox Was talking about 11 of the things that Josh Holly and I think one of the Democrats want to do is another round of $1200 payments. So husband, wife Forget $2400, and I don't know. I don't know whether you get $1200 for a kid or what? But And I know the $1200 for some people. Is a boatload of money. I also know this I think most individuals would rather that they be back at work. Actually earning that $1200. Then having the government that already spends $4.4 trillion Just handing it out to If you have the choice. I want you to seriously think about this. If you had the choice, you your husband and you your wife, Your husband? Whatever The combination is that your health You can either get $2400. Or the economy can open back up. And if you you know, if you want to take a vaccine, you take a vaccine. If you want to make sure you don't have covered you take a home test. You do all of these things. And we actually get back to our normal You know, working bitching about the traffic. Rapping about the office, whatever it might be. Or would you rather have the $2400 Back in 2011. Then Senator Tom Coburn. I am. Congressman James Lankford. Both Okies. They introduced the taxpayers right to know Act. Because they wanted to know in the $4.4 Trillion we spend every year. What is it by? What do we get? So they introduced this act on the bill defined the term program and required every agency of the government to report a complete list of all of their programs, but not just the programs. One of the outcomes. One of the metrics. For the past nine years. That bill has enjoyed almost near unanimous bipartisan support in both chambers, with the exception of two members. You have consistently held up its passage in the United States Senate first former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Now Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. At one point after lying for her replaced Colbert in the Senate sensors, Claire McCaskill and Langford even made 27 changes to the bill tried to mollify Chuck Schumer. Yet he maintained his hold. Refused to let the bill out of committee. You know, this bill is not ideal. After years of of obstruction, the taxpayer rights No act was added to the National Defense Authorization Act, which passed both chambers last week. Maybe we will. Maybe we don't want to know. Probably don't want to know, but maybe now we can. I actually figure out from that $4.4 Trillion that we spend. We can figure out. Oh, here's what we get for it. And I know particularly fear of the liberal persuasion. You think that we spend the majority of that $4.4 trillion or at least a significant amount of it on military spending? You would be wrong. You know what the $4.4 Trillion primarily comprised of Transfer payments. You will transfer payments or Taking money out of the pocket one taxpayer and giving it to somebody else. Transfer payments. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, every kind of social Welfare program that you can possibly imagine that makes up almost two thirds of the federal budget. Two thirds of that $4.4 trillion is just money that goes from one person to another person. We wonder why we can't have or compete with China on the Navy. We can't compete with China on the Navy because we'll have the money. At the same time, we don't have any money Congress. Republicans, conservatives fiscal conservative views Talking about sending everybody to check for $1200. You know what? Keep my $1200. Keep my $1200. Open the economy back up. We should all just in. There's the problem is you can't refuse it with shows up in your shows up in your checking account automatically. If you pay taxes, you don't pay taxes. It shows up on your VT card. So the only thing you could do if you really wanted to protest your $2400 that a couple might get his drive to check back to the U. S. Treasury. You know that money does goes to do that goes to reduce The national debt. I'm sorry, but you're $2400 is like peeing on the fence. It's not gonna do anything. It makes you feel good. Go ahead and do it. We are absolutely out of our minds. Western civilization faces these threats from China and Russia from mass migration. Look, we got new caravans coming up through Central and South America headed to Mexico. Oh, there was a little time it just right. They won't get there before January, 20th But by January, 21.

"I think what we're seeing now is that the target? We picked this spot on and it's the right one for these first two vaccines, and that's really good news and the third vaccine. The one from Oxford. Astra. Genic also reported some preliminary data and also has very good activity again looking at that spike protein. About using a different technology to produce that spike protein, So I think we're on the right track. And, you know, I think it's good news because I think having something to get a relief from this pandemic. Would be welcomed by everyone. So lets you mentioned the two already. So it's the Fizer, Um, vaccine candidate, the maternal one. And then this AstraZeneca one So the visor in the modern era, the to kind of like ahead of the curve. But again, all three very close not to look at this in a capitalistic manner. But is it good? And I know you're on the science side of this not on the other side of this, but Um, having to in competition does that What is that going to mean for the American people? Does this mean we get it sooner? Does this mean it'll be cheaper? Does this mean we have to choose between the two and figure out which is the best for us? How does that work? Yeah, I mean, I think it's good that we have more and I'm hoping we'll have six or seven because we had six billion people in the world and there is no. One company that's going to be able to produce enough vaccine in a fast enough time period. So it's gonna take a village to fix things, so we really want to have lots of vaccine available. We've already seen some of the issues Madonna requires Refrigeration. Baeza requires super cold freezing. So some of these things they're going to make it harder to get vaccines out for everybody. And so we really want to have lots of options. And then I think what we want to do is be able to give people guide I think the most important thing is is that if you start one vaccine, you finish with that vaccine. We shouldn't makes a match because, you know, we don't want to wear poke it out to the stripes at the same time you go. Dr Karl. Victim bomb Joining us, Doc last question. Just in general when it comes of vaccines. Good guys. Look, there's a lot of people that are resistant that this one. I may fall into that category to a certain degree. How much of the population needs to get this vaccine in order for it to have a positive effect on all of us as a whole? If you could understand what I'm saying. Yeah, I think if we can start to get 50% of the population vaccinated and in particular in most neighborhoods That will be able to really decrease the spread. And the disaster that has been this pandemic. And while I certainly respect and honor people's views and values, I encourage people to learn about each vaccine. What it does how it works. One other risks whether the benefits And then think about how your life has changed and how much you really liked 2020. How many people have died? How overwhelmed their hospitals are right now and How things are gonna get a little bit worse before they get better here for all of us. And then ask yourself Do I want to be part of the solution or part of the problem? And are you willing to take a leap of faith with me? Because I'm gonna challenge you in the vaccine challenge. To join our side. Be a part of it. So it's like that thing on our hands, the tide challenge or the one of those say so, doctor, you. You have no qualms. You would get it. "About a possible covert vaccine? If you are, you've come to the right place. I'm Alise cling sitting in for John Williams and we have Dr Kevin most. He's chief medical officer and north Western Medicine Central DuPage Hospital on the line with us. Doctor Most. We have a whole bunch of people who are on the phone, and they've got questions as well. Let's start with Mike. Hey, Mike, What's your question for Dr most? Uh, hi. Uh, yeah, I have a question about the flu picked seen some room or 50% 70%. Ah, effective And if you get the food they're saying And and you're off to the cold vaccine with those Men together. I mean, you recommend that? Yeah, they they will definitely, eventually probably being one back. Vaccination. To be honest with you. I have to marry when you get the influenza vaccines were getting vaccinated for somewhere between three and four different viruses in your one shot. The effectiveness is, as you said, historically is going to be anywhere from 25% of 60%. So it's not usually not a direct smack hit on that. It's going to protect you 100%, but it will shorten your duration. It'll make your symptoms left the two vaccines, can you certainly when we get them available? Certainly can but certainly telling everybody get that flu vaccine now. The Kobe vaccine will not be available. I would think until I'm thinking January to be honest with you, but some people are thinking much earlier. So doctor most. What about this new high dose flu vaccine that I've been starting to read about is that something's supposed to protect you for up to six months. Is that a combination of the different strains that they've now put it all into one know, at least it's interesting. The high dose vaccine. The concept is that people over the age of doctors will vary, some say 50. Some say, 55. We find that as we age, our immune system does not work a CZ well, so the high dose vaccine is actually giving a body an opportunity in an individual with a lower immune status to make sure that they still get the same response. We run. So any senior anybody really Over the age of 50 when you're getting that vaccine, whether it be a Walgreens in your doctor's office, Make sure you're getting the high dose one because you want to make sure that you're going to get the response and it will last through the season. Certainly Just the last thing you want is for your flu vaccine toe wear off. I always worry about getting it so early because I think Well, what about January? I always get sick in March. Maybe it wears off in January, so This will be one year that we really want to protect people as early as we possibly can. Just because hospitals now we're going to be put into a situation of co bitter Do you have influenza? And now we're going to try to be sorting those individuals out in an emergency room setting, which could be very burdensome of the hospitals. So that's actually a great question is how do you tell the difference between you know, having flu and and Cove it and then also How do you They seem to be contagious in slightly different ways. Is that right is flume or contagious at its height than CO Vitter's cove. It's still much more contagious. Well, that's an interesting question. No one thing the symptoms are, unfortunately very much the same. Right. You're gonna have a fever. You could have a coffee could have shorted the breath. Think symptoms that you have with influenza you can have with Cove it so the doctors when we start to sort it out. We're going to be sorting it out by doing testing, so we don't want to stress that testing system again to a point where we're running out of testing materials. That's probably one of the biggest things your second part of your question. Woz remind because it was really well which one is more contagious. And how perfect you know The contagiousness factor has been very interesting. As we've looked at this. We have seen that If you look at contagiousness of same measles, it's extremely contagious. One person could easily impact, you know. Many, many people in a single room where we look at Kobe, and we're looking at it well, one person's probably going to. In fact, 2 to 3 people. Potentially influence, on the other hand, have had some years where it's been difficult to spread, and we have low in fluent account and others where it's very easy to spread, where an individual can spread to 45 people. Those are the years that we have those terrible outbreaks on DH very high numbers of influenza cases. But if you really were splitting up apples, beer atoms between the two They're probably pretty close as faras, how infected they are between Kobe and influenza. You know the way things are going this year that it's going to be the worst. Lucy, you're absolutely right. It's murky, murky law this year. It's just how it is. All right, Jim. Jim, you've got a question for Dr most right. Yes, sir. Ma'am, I'm sorry. Um, my question is there's going to be about three backs, each coming out relatively close with them months. And how are you going to decide Which one to take? Yeah. Jimmy thie. Interesting thing about the Koven vaccines. Right now. There's 27 that Aaron Phase one. There's 14 that Aaron face, too. And their nine that in there and face three, But like you said, it certainly looks like the race to the finish is going to be the modern of vaccine toe..
