Senate Votes to Advance Bipartisan Infrastructure Proposal
"President Biden in a bipartisan group of senators finalize key parts of the bill, NPR's Windsor Johnston reports. Senate Democrats are also working to pass a separate, much larger package. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says he's moving forward with a two track strategy to pass the largest infrastructure package. In decades. The first track is the bipartisan bill focused on traditional brick and mortar infrastructure projects. The second track is a budget reconciliation bill where Democrats will make historic investments in American jobs, American families and efforts to fight climate change. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has warned that she won't bring the bipartisan infrastructure bill to the floor until the Senate delivers the larger $3.5 trillion spending plan. Senate Democrats are expected to pass it by using a budget maneuver that would not require any support from Republicans. Windsor Johnston. NPR NEWS Washington President Biden today called on Americans to follow the latest guidance on mask wearing and also urged people to

Sen. Portman Slams Pelosi's Threat to Delay Infrastructure Vote
"Senator portman thanks for joining us this. Let's start out with that infrastructure deal. You just heard speaker. Pelosi say she's not going to have a vote until reconciliation has also passed by the senate. I off do you expect to reach a deal this week with george. Let me say that. What she has said is entirely counter to what president biden has committed to and what the senate is doing which is a two track process. The infrastructure bill has nothing to do with the reckless tax and spend extravaganza that she's talking about in terms of what reconciliation as she called it so so no. I'm not happy with what she said. Because it's been inconsistent with the agreement that we have on a bipartisan basis. Does that mean we'll end up with nothing on their own. I'm gonna well if she has her way we could. I'm not sure what the future is of reconciliation. I know that the bipartisan infrastructure package is very popular among the american people and in the united states congress because it makes sense. We need it badly. You know forty. Three percent of our roads are in bad or mediocre condition. According to the engineers forty-six thousand bridges or structurally deficient We have ships lining up at portsmouth. Reports aren't efficient enough. Eighty seven percent of the american people. Nick we do it. Bipartisan infrastructure package. It's the right thing to do. Every president in modern times has talked about it. President trump's proposal was for one point five trillion dollars in infrastructure or is about five hundred seventy nine billion over five years so this is the right thing to do. It's been totally bipartisan. From the start. It's the way we ought to be doing things here in washington to get stuff done and i can't believe the speaker of the house would be blocking it. Do you have a deal. We're about ninety percent of the way there. I'm here this weekend working on legislative language with colleagues and with staff. And and i. I feel good about getting done this week. We have one issue outstanding and We're not getting much Response from the democrats on it. It's about mass transit. Our transit numbers very generous. We increased transit in this proposal. We also increased the formula going forward That's that's the one issue outstanding. Frankly at this point my hope is that we'll see progress on that yet. Willow Smith Goes in a New Musical Direction
"Never thought i'd come out of a willow song same rock and roll here. We are willow. Is the artist. The record is called lately. I feel everything song hearing this. The closing cut called breakout willow. Also known as willow smith daughter will smith and jada pinkett smith and christina for people who remember her when she was just nine years old and released her debut song. Whip my hair. She's twenty now and this is not that right. Well oh and i have a lot in common and that we've had our beef as you know. We've had our nineties singer songwriter. Phase where we're into tracy chapman and maybe a little bit of Fiona apple here and there but now she's into what i was in sioux coming out of high school which was paramore and my chemical romance and it really really shows so ninety s. I read that she was inspired to go in this direction in part because of her mom right so in two thousand sue jada pinkett fronted. A new metal ban call wisdom so music runs in the family But also in particular what was brilliant sparring willow was that at that time as. She's watching her mom literally rock out she would also see. Your mom received death threats literally just for fronting abandoned genre considered quote unquote white and so this music is definitely. It's artistry but it's also activism for her because she wants to show like other black women. Hey we need to reclaim the genre that began as ours. And i even hear that like from fuck you. Which is i believe. The second track where i was like. Oh man this is her channeling x ray specs and this is even before i realized that polystyrene was half somalian. So some notable features on the record to cherry glazer this travis barker and tara appears on a song called extra. Want to play just a little bit of that. My i was ready. "The problem with the reconciliation. Bill is if the house says well. If it doesn't pass the senate we're gonna take the whole thing over here while it's not the republican job the past the big liberal spending bill and other stuff. That's a that's a good old fashioned fight. Maybe they can find a republican to if they pair it down. They got enough trouble getting mansion on board. Maybe cinema to democrats and there are others. Who have doubts about it. So good old fashioned. Politics is what the reconciliation bill is about. You can't ask the republicans to be responsible for passing a ideologically liberal democratic bill. It's like holding the democrats hostage if they don't pass the human life amendment is just unrealistic. So maybe there's a deal to be had on the other spending bill more social welfare spending. There's some good things in there. But at the scale they've been proposing Kind of bernie sanders kind of scale. It's just a nonstarter So it's dangerous to link to. I think there is cynicism alive and well in politics on both sides. I think the democrats and the progressives are being a bit greedy but they've got power they didn't have before and they're trying to use it. That's understandable The big problem will be getting the last two or three republican bills. Do the plane infrastructure bill and trying to require something else to pass with any republican votes. That's much more noxious to them than the infrastructure. Bill is a is a fool's errand and you know. We talked about that latte earlier. So it's not quite as cynical man as as you're outlining in your question but thank you for it. Nonetheless and with. We actually read them and We appreciate hearing from you and the more you rate us the more the podcast is pushed out to other people which we sure appreciate our ratings are up and we thank you for it. First question is forgives. this is from. Patrick biden passed on linking a tax increase for the rich listen up bill and corporations to get. Gop support for the bipartisan infrastructure. Deal now that that deal is done. Why can't he biden. Unlinked to and pass a tax increases an independent issue or is he precluded from making taxes fair due to the other deal meaning the infrastructure deal gibbs. What say you well certainly not precluded any way from picking this up either as an independent deal or putting this into the second track of reconciliation. That we've That we talked about earlier in the podcast. And look. i think this is i don't think this is by any means simply taking it. Out of the bipartisan deal. I don't think by any means that. Joe biden is walking away from this. There's enormous popularity in greater taxation for corporations and for the wealthy There's a reason that he ran on saying that. Just as republicans wanted to lay the boogeyman of. Oh he's gonna be tax and spend. He was happy to have that tax be on corporations and the wealthy so this will be something that he will continue on. And i predict if it doesn't get past. It'll be something you hear a lot about in twenty twenty two and twenty twenty four so It is Certainly not got away. Yeah it'll be part of the the next phase of this Waltz and their bill out of this talk between now and the midterm elections were then maybe the power in the house will change the republicans take majority bill. This question comes from john. I'm gonna read it verbatim because it's It's worded quite well. What realistic path. You see the gop ever coming back from the depths of dumb assery. That's why should i stay and fight from within. What does that look like I don't know i would only say that. Politics is hard to predict and therefore if people think they can do good by staying in the republican party they should if they think they can do better by helping set moderate democrats and responsible democrats. They should do that. They should also have the option of in my opinion citizens. But even as the elected officials think about Throwing their weight where it makes the most difference in any particular case and honestly i would act differently. Depending on the congressional district in the state i was editors of which which parties have a primary that. I can make a difference in. I live in virginia. No party registration. You can vote in either primary and i've tended to vote democratic farmers last two or three times was i thought helping a moderate democrat winning mike district or in For governor in virginia is better for the country then helping the kinds of republicans. We're seeing in the era of trump. But i have no quarrel at all with other people saying you know. I can make a difference here on the republican side. And i'm trying to help his cheney and atkinson others to twenty twenty two so we need decent people in both parties. Outs will leave for the sake of this country today. We announced over the republican accountability project. A republicans for voting rights as an attempt to rally some republicans both for protecting voting rights but also ensuring against election overturning by by by politicians either at the state level or ultimately in the house Congress january six type situation not the riots. But the vote in the house on january. Six and i think that's an effort. We'll see how many people signed up. This is where i really. There's some parts of the anti election suppression agenda. That should be totally. Bipartisan fixing the electoral count. Act which is mateen seventy something to make sure that people understand that congress does not have the right to change intellectual result. Just supposed to certify the what the electoral college in each state says. i mean that should be bipartisan. And i think it will be a real test of how much of a trump he party now is. Let me just interrupt. Say you're so right about that. Mona sharon in the bulwark the publication that you're instrumental part of has a great article about this. I would encourage people to google it because this is something that has not gotten nearly enough attention it as a credit or form that frankly ought to pass one hundred zero but go ahead. i just wanted to. That's it. I so i think it's very much up in the air. If if there's a path back the for the public radio the healthier for this country to have to sound parties not one authoritarian tending party and another party that you're then counting on winning all the time and you're catching on the better people in that party also putting dominating most of the time but wishing doesn't make it so and i i respect people have decided we're going to be red dog democrats and we're going to try to help the become help to joe biden. Democrats be the future of the party. And i respect people who are staying and fighting in the republican party. Yeah stay and fight. And hallelujah on the bill murphy. Here's here's one for you senate. Gop leaders are shocked. Shocked to find. The biden intends to pass a reconciliation bill after agreeing to the bipartisan compromise. Did they or do they have any intention of passing the bipartisan bill. Or do you think the plan all along was fain agreement with the compromise so they could tank the deal while pointing the fingers at dams and the reconciliation bill. No no apologies. The colonel renault. They're there they do expect gambling in the casino here. I think the republican plan was to find an infrastructure bill. They could peel off enough votes to get to sixty which means they need ten repub. I think they probably have close to that. But not quite enough and past that and everybody take some credit now. The hardest core republicans are worried. Biden we'll get most of the credit because he's president and so on political you know basis being cynical they they probably hope it fails but i think most of them were happy to do that..

"So just quickly. Afghanistan shutting down a year from now in the midterm elections. So you know bit less than a year when they start will are leaving afghanistan. Be a win for bind politically ended the endless war longest in american history or as we literally pack up the airport. This week will flare back and be a problem and will any voter care. I mean i'm very worried about what's going to happen there. We have a traffic pieces. Bulwark today by we'll sell. Bruce spent four towards duty over there. I just i think it's an untold unforced error in the sense that there was zero pressured or pull out the remaining three thousand troops there. We haven't had a fatality there in sixteen months which is a very good thing and you know they might have been opposite. Get then we'll say glibly that could be some if we'd stayed but i think it's very bad for our policy. Error both political and moral error by the by administration having said that. I don't want to pretend that vote. There is a lot of people could be happy to get out of just relieved And i think. I don't know if he'll get credit for it but i don't know that anyone will blame him. Much of those tried to push back on this decision that very i wouldn't say had huge residents of of the public and Republicans with trump having professed a desire to get out so much and having started this process. Which biden is now continued is made it harder for republicans to sort of be do their normal thing of being the more hawkish party and so forth Look i mean. I think president obama's decision two thousand eleven iraq was terrible one day and having to go back in two thousand fourteen to fight the jihadists who would take over part of the country and didn't do anything in syria and the unbelievable disaster. I can't honestly say that. He paid a political price for that though and so even iraq which was so difficult to war and fought so badly for the first two or three years at least bush got reelected. No four so. The ability of presidents to survive what outside observers might think of as poor decisions in foreign policies. I guess for while at least pretty great. So i'm very worried about what's going to happen in afghanistan subsidy but i. I don't want to pretend that necessarily it's to be a huge political issue for the biden. Folks i think there's some long term risk in just sort of what happens in that area of the world in that may even be a medium-term risk with The taliban deciding to consolidate its gains in an even greater way and In control more territory or is you've even seen an american general Talk about the fact that you could easily have an afghan civil war on on our hands relatively soon I think short term. The politics of this are probably still pretty good to get out of there. Because i think the biggest challenge in this is on I accept some of this. Responsibility is Having been in the white house. But you know we we have. The american people have have heard that. We're we're there. Were spending a lot of money and a lot of time and and In some cases Tragically sacrificing our men and women Because the idea was that you know if we just stayed there a little bit longer than these afghan security forces with just a little bit more training in just a little bit more support would be able to Defend their country. And i think in reality what happened was american. Presidents went often flying to the toboggan. Them helicoptering to a presidential palace. And quite frankly always having really that same agenda with With the leader of afghanistan which is how come. We're not making more progress. How come your people. Don't have you know to some degree skin in the game in this fight. How come when the going gets tough. They get going. And i think in reality. I'm i'm not sure biden had to do this but i'm not sure if we stayed there for another twenty years it would be substantively different on the ground. I think this has got to be something that if the afghans can't solve it and we saw this when when when when obama made the decision in late two thousand nine to surge more troops there and it was actually the general suggestion that we put a time limit on how long they were going to be there because quite frankly if you say to the afghan leaders we're going to be there forever then. There's no sense of urgency. There's no sense of okay. Now we gotta get our shit together And i think in this case. I think american presidents writ large sort of had this kind of run its course and it is going to be up to the afghans to figure out whether or not they can provide security inside that country all bring it back down to the political hack craven level and just say as a matter hard political reality. Most americans think an afghan is a cat. They went to college. I think it's a blanket. I don't think it will have any impact on the next election. But fifteen years from now when somebody's doing hacks on jupiter they're going to say boy. Nobody cared about afghanistan but they should have cared about pakistan. So we're we're we're seaward unwinds but there is something to say about owning it. They sure do now but just to be clear. Having sat through any number of good situation room meetings on that exact subject. Don't misunderstand that just because you have Pulled some of those forces out of afghanistan that you aren't there. There isn't a lot of focus still on on pakistan and what happens. Get focused. But they're not letting us. I mean fact a search which you guys did and i is supported at the time was the one time i think i was invited to a meeting. With the president and the result ruin two thousand eleven where was like we and it's only republicans while the partisanship supported that mcconnell supported it in the senate. Republicans voted in favor of it. And i think we're the democrats did in the house. I know that president obama didn't wanna do it. I'm sure there was a lot of regret. And there were a lot of casualties. God does sagging and elsewhere and it's very tough in two thousand ten two thousand eleven it did ultimately end up buying quite a lot of time Which wasn't worth wasn't worthless. You know accent hasn't blown up. Is that what expected for the last ten years afghanistan hasn't been a staging place for terrorism. We were able to draw down to three or four thousand ultimately by twenty eighteen hundred. Nineteen and so i really just think it was. That was sustainable. The three or four thousand of the current situation. And i think the alternative we're about to see is going to be worse. I tend to agree that it won't have an immediate effect. I don't know a real. If you really get a saigon seventy five up situation if you get a destabilization of pakistan you know you guys have seen this and other administrations. I mean far policy decisions individually. Don't usually you know voters don't focus if people have the general sense that the world's things are falling apart in a bunch of places and we're not being strong enough that can have an effect and i don't. I hope it's not the case for the country's sake that that happens. I hope this is kind of confined and the effects of it or very limited. But i'm pretty worried about this combined with other things Beginning to make it look as if all that relief that we have biden. it's that trump. that suddenly doesn't look necessarily that the world is that much safer than as much safer as we thought it would be. So let's talk about the appointment of liz. Cheney by speaker pelosi to the january six commission the fact that cheney took it and mccarthy's threatening maybe even removers From a position on the armed services committee. I say hurry. Hurry hurry for liz. Cheney as an act of patriotism and she becomes more impressive to me every week. I'm now i mean we knew as well back back in the day. We drifted apart during the trump years because she was willing to course to to go along in many ways that i wasn't tonight you know she had a theory about how this would work and she had a theory of how to survive for the how the party and the country could survive the trump years with the least damage which was turned into a parenthesis limit. The damage as it was happening. She did a couple of things to do that. Go along as much as you had to. I thought she wanted to watch but and then it's a four year thing he'll lose. We'll have healthy republican party again. That's good for the party. If you're a republican it's good for the country. So i i wanna give her credit. I think she had ernest honest. Kind of way of thinking about. It wasn't my way about it. I think she paid too high price but anyway november third habit trump loss but then he fights the election results and the january six. I think that was the reason..

"I just don't think it is sustainable as a narrative for this white house to to think oh those are stories in the other side of the building. We'll just we just don't have to worry about them as much right. I don't think it's just because she's the heir-apparent just because If he doesn't run she's by definition the front runner. I just think in in a modern news environment. Look you know that what's going to happen is biden's going to get asked about this. It's gonna have very little patience for this question. He's gonna snap At the question or or at the question itself And that will perpetuate the story. Oh the white house's frustrated with this blah blah blah blah you know. Hopefully that answers been practiced and say look what you what you all don't see in the chattering. Class is what i see every day. She's helping me make decisions. He's of all of those things. I think those will be important because at some point he's going to get asked and it's going to be fairly soon but again totally. Give her some stuff to do. That is substantive that she can drive and make positive news on make some announcements when the next thing they do on kovic get her get her out in front not just standing to the side so one problem is if the president himself This was true george. H w bush to invite into thinks wants to work the hale and wants to really work ultimately the legislative process which is good. There's not that much room for the vp to chime in. And she spent a lot less time in the senate then biden quayle had actors spent more time in the senate then bush but bush had been vice president of course rate ear so he jim baker when new everyone so those less interest in having quayle take that role. We did a little stuff behind the scenes. More than a little in the senate. But i do think for. Harris is a good public spokesperson. I what we were talking about earlier on. Kothe is an obvious thing. it's a little. She could be tougher than biden. She could be the person who goes around the country and says hey we all need to get vaccinated and we need to do it for the sake of opening up not for the sake of being public health. You know not just because the science tells us where we want open. i mean. There's a very easy public bully. Pulpit message the irony. Is the bully pulpit stuff easier for. Vpn away because it doesn't getting everyone else's lane you're not suddenly the staff's looking up. What's the ep up on the hill. I i haven't meeting later in the day and it's not the and the various cabinet secretaries aren't slightly annoyed. That the vp's edry into their negotiations on this bill or that. Bill i think the cova discussion we had earlier is a pretty obvious. Obviously for for the vice president to kind of go go out there maybe at the beginning of the school year maybe earlier though and sort of really say this is important for the country of my boss. The president's done a great job of making the system work. We produced all this stuff at the end of the day. It's a free country that we've got to persuade people to do this. And i'm going to beat with yeah religious leaders with educators but also with citizens around the country go to states that have unfortunately low sign up rates and so forth. I don't know if that's the right one. There are other things like that. But you've got to think of things to do that. Don't step too much on other people's toes and actually do add something to the administration not not subtract the final point. I just wanna last night on back on the thing. I was remember trying to persuade decent relations most of the time with most of the worst people sometimes they we've had falling falling out. Maybe that's my fault. I don't vice president quayle's while he was he was really loyalty player. But i remember trying to point to persuade one of them. You know we were more reagan. The image was that we were more conservative than were reaganite. Friendlier the kemp types as well than the bush republicans which is somewhat true And so i remember saying you know that's good for bush. Not bad you want it. You can't be everything to everyone you want to have. An that. has people in it. Who different parts of the party can look up to and say. Hey you know that's crazy. Maybe the presents a little bit too much this way abidance case maybe till two old school or to maters they but you know there are people in there who is speaking to us very hard having said. That's very hard to actually persuade president staff that it's good for them to have a little bit of visible descent invisible different points of view in administration but again. That's where i think. The covert thing is a nice the would be a nice platform. That doesn't raise that problem but having said that also wouldn't be so terrible offense like voting rights. She were a little more especially if she would go beyond the base and make it a little more about the election. Suppression stuff She was a g of california. She knows something about this You know protecting state officials who are doing their job beat with secretary of state of colorado. Who's a republican the sec four sixers of washington's republican and talk about big with ravensburger and georgia. And say you know we've had those were different size of political spectrum but these people did their job but we can't have a situation where legislatures are now preventing them from doing their job and and putting volunteers election In polling stations at risk from harassment and so forth. That's the right issue either. But there are things she could do. That would as as robert says would travel around the country. That'd be a little more granular than what the president's going to be able to do i. I liked the covert thing if she could own. We're gonna vaccinate kids a sap. Here's the plan and deliver it and the other thing she could be the hammer. There's plenty it's totally in her interest to go. Rip santa's face off in florida and pick a fight you know because that'll rally democrat partisans to her side you kristi nome all particularly the red states is even easier but she Right she needs a persona other than media bumbler and You know fights are good way to get there. She's gotta be the right fight. All right hold. That thought we're going to take a short break and now a word from our talks murphy. You know growing up. I think one of the best things about being a kid was cereal. I loved it. I loved going to the.

"Working in the vice president's office who's you know doing his best their best in the certainly case. I think it's it's vice. President harris teams case. It's not really like the other recent vice presidencies which were either peers. In a way which have their own life or reason their own problems. you know. Clinton gore reagan bush or bush-cheney which was sorta weird. We're changing had much more experience than bush. Obama biden biden for experience than obama but obama was superstar so it was a little different relationship. So funny wait is a little bit i mean. I don't want to compare either way vice. President harris device resin quayle but structurally it's a little bit similar the much worse senior president. Who picked the vice president said not knowing him or her terribly. Well not a huge even having a history in the primary then right. I mean quail didn't run. Obviously but i mean not a huge personal relationship there. I don't think and again. I do what i would say. Having been in there is of course the thing you see on the outside is not necessarily at all what is actually happening inside. I mean this is a pretty hard thing to this of all the black boxes. The vp presidential relationship is one of the black ones and people on the outside and make these cavalier comments about this person's out of favor or this person's messed up something. And you have no idea what's really happened behind the scenes whether the white house didn't purposely give vp. Something which they knew is going to be kind of easy to get messed up. Anyway because they wanted to keep the burden off the president and you know what. That's fine actually. That's why they're there. That's why the mind harris natured. Way is willing to take more heat than she deserves. Frankly about the border or something or not going to the border early enough. That doesn't hurt biden. Much in the long run. So i guess i'm very much anyway. We had our own challenges with with quayle and I will say this that. The bush people didn't and i don't blame for this gutter there to help us but they did have the attitude a little bit you know. What if the media wants obsessed about dan quayle for the next three years. It's not gonna matter. I ninety two and it didn't matter whatever we lost but it wasn't because well he did better than i do to the thunder ninety eight and i think this biden people may have the same attitude to harris with a slight difference that biden being older harris's little more. I think the one thing that. I'm curious what you guys. This feels different to me about this from the all the preceding kind of vp mini-conferences. She's so much more the the next in line in the sense that people really don't expect or at least a very uncertain the president biden will run again and even at his age whether something could happen though. Let's not so you know. There's a kind of scrutiny that she has a kind of maybe a little more weight that's put on all the stuff that in our case in the case of bush-cheney oh this is more just gossip because everyone thought the number one guy was going to run again and there was no issue that god of health or anything and so i. I wonder how much more attention that's causing. How much pressure. It's putting on the staff to handle these situations a little more expeditiously. We could sort of look at this and say we'll find they can a attack these quayle. Who cares you know well to your point exactly bill. I think the luxury of of of letting the press kind of you know devour the vice president in the case of George h w bush. Dan quayle just isn't an option. As you said for for this vice president and for this white house i think this is a bit of a danger will robinson moment and i think it's something that has to be taken really really serious because the narrative isn't just about an murphy. You touch on this. This isn't just about a few rumblings inside the last few months of the vice presidential Office it does go back to the campaign right. This is a candidate that started as high as anybody did. Twenty thousand people in oakland for her announcement. She never made it. Dial do didn't participate in the iowa caucus that night as as an active candidate and so there's a line that gets drawn back And and i have been struck by the fact that there are an increasing number of chattering stories in lake. Washington is is. it's it's the chattering story. Land right of so and so in the west wing is mad at so and so in the vice president's office somebody messed this up in there really bummed. They have to clean this up. There seems to be a bit more of that than normal or necessary. I i was discussing these stories with somebody Last week and i said i i know in the press office. I would be doing exactly what this press. Office is doing and that is pushing back hard against this narrative But i said to this person. I hope that the the the west wing and the president staff spends more time fixing the challenge and problem that exists. Then they do pushing back knowing. They're gonna push back hard. I hope that also means there's a meeting to figure out what needs to happen right. What set of people do they need to add. I don't think it's necessarily subtraction as it may be addition. Who else do you need to get to help guide her. There's a perfect model. It's joe biden. Right that they understand the group. That's their understands exactly as bill said how to deal with being overshadowed how to deal with being Not being in the top job but also finding a niche of things. Give her some news to make go fill her calendar with events. That actually make some news. Stop doing these roundtable events in washington with no news. Go drive in issue right. They've given her you know they'd given her the border. Which is vexed two presidents over the last three presidents over the last fifteen years And they've given Voting rights which is not going to get solved writes a great base issue. Be great for democratic party dinners. But it's not going to get solved. Go give her something to make. Some news on. Politics abhors a vacuum. Go out there and fill her calendar with stuff that create new stories on the other side of this. But i will say as close the door and figure out what needs to get fixed. What what do you need to add to that operation to make it work better so that you get away from these stories because these stories aren't going away unless they get filled with another narrative that takes her into a different place now. The pushback is just tactics. It's abandoned necessary but it doesn't solve the problem. I think harris kind of in a double check mate too because one every other major democratic politician of her generation is hoping she fails because they wanna competitive open seat race for president to succeed biden. You know there's a lot of ambition out there. And if she becomes the unstoppable biden second or third term than that is a problem for their own ambitions. So you know. Her rooting caucuses is small. The second problem. And and i think to their credit the quilt people navigated this pretty well but when when you guys took over bill after and that was around during all this the eighty eight campaign people forget you. You know quayle was getting terrific. Press hadn't issued set. You guys really did a good rehab job. But that also created tensions with the bush staff. Because you know there's this cat and dog thing where the the presidential stafford doesn't really like the vp to get a lot of tremendous press other than incredible vp supported. Brilliant presidents amazing accomplishments. I mean there was a perception even after the obama presidency. Where where you know. I think obama and biden worked. Well you'd know better. I would robert but there was a perception. During the primary. The lot of the former obama staff were not for biden. Mad about gay marriage where biden came out first and you know could all be bullshit but in dc that bullshit takes on a reality of its own if it's repeated not so the harass people have to one. They have to fix any problem at the top of. She's driving this. Which i suspect because it's been going on since the day. She announced she may be proud of the problem. She's got understand that and labor mightily to fix it A lot of stories from the campaign about her sister getting involved. You know if all that's going on it's gotta stop and bindi right. They've got gotta find a crusade that the biden staff will support for her to make the next twelve months of you know just an incredible time for her and that is good for them because otherwise the incentives will be to tear down to open up that job for the bunch of you know people who may be thinking about a primary so it's a good test of if they can step out of the day to day and understand what everybody's interests are and make some real changes or this is only going to get bigger as.

"Just had one more thing about the house. And we're move onto the veep. You know a wise democratic house watcher. A few years ago said something interesting to me. This kind of come back to haunt me. As i watched this. I mean the earlier before. I quote that the earlier kind of uncovered big bipartisan. Win was this. Chinese tech ketchup bill. That went flying through the senate with big. bipartisan support. Now the house may be on an institutional basis. But i worry on logical one is starting to screw with that that should be a slam dunk. Pass it deal. But what is smart house watcher. Said is you know you. Re pubs are funny. All year guys are most of them are from safe districts. They only care about primary voters. They don't have competitive elections and they're kinda crazy and hard to deal with. Well here's a secret. Most of our house members are exactly the same there from safe districts. They only care a little bit about primaries and they're hard to deal with. They have just not found anything to have a unpopular fight over. Because all they've had to do as pile on on trump which is a political winner for them. You know you guys are defending the indefensible. But one day. There's gonna be a voter to where people get an idea of who is in the democratic house caucus and it's a mere image more lefty than those you know beauties that you guys have and i worry that that could be the sad story of this infrastructure bill from some of the hint something but i sure hope i'm wrong. Yeah well i think the pressure really has looked. This is this is the counter says twenty twenty one but this is also really about twenty twenty two and i think you know you're not gonna get the base out to vote unless you can prove that the congress can do things While you enjoy control even if it's fifty votes in the senate so this is why. I think in the end. Democrats have to link arms and go and jump all at the same time and if they don't do that then It isn't going end well and it will be really hard to motivate the base. Yeah no it's absolutely right so let's go under the vp's office. Because in washington there is a hurricane of conventional wisdom and cocktail. Party chattering and neurotic teeth grinding about. Oh my god we've got a dud vice president at least politically you know. Comma harris has been haunted by this many critics. I was allowed one during your presidential campaign. Kept saying you know. She's not a very good candidate. But i was proven wrong. She she did. She campaign was a bit of a fiasco. Staff changes falling polls after high initial expectations and a strong launch. So it did and is a fiasco a lot of us predicted. But she performed okay as vp. She was a better vp candidate. I will say then primary candidate now. We're having more staff trouble. Where having leaks at so unbinding like to the media about who's mad at who the chief of staff or the staffer that staffer some people saying it's all at the top and the washington kind of odds. Miss machine is calculating. Oh this is bad. this is bad now. Bill kristol you. Bend the chief of staff to vice president. You know what it's like the kind of coexist under the sun. God of the president with the presidential staff that probably send you out for takeout food. A lot gives you the tough jobs. You live through the famous potato incident. When you were quayle's chief of staff robert thought you might have a little Back into the complete wreckage of we told you about this back then but seriously you lived through it. How much of it is institutional. How much do you think is her. How do you fix problems like that. Because i think my view is if she doesn't fix it she's gonna fall into the same narrative in a different way a narrative of plague competence and staff. Trouble that quayle. Our friend found him in after that ridiculous potato thing you can't let the concrete set so anyway you're an informed observer these things what's your take. Yeah someone who failed to fix if i can put it that way. That quells unjust reputation after the campaign. Which i wasn't involved in in eighty eight when benson destroyed him in that debate and I i'm surprised the vice president. Harrison's team hasn't reached out hasn't called me to get advice on you know here. I am former chief of staff to vice president. Quayle you'd think they'd want counsel on how to make it work you know they look back at other preceding vice presidencies thought. Yeah what's a model. What something that really ended up in that left us left the the vice president with a with a great political future. And somehow i have not though am cordial terms of many people in the biden white house administration. I haven't gotten that call for for advice from vice-president harasses people the it's it is weird obviously vice president. Caesar the vice president is a weird institution it staffs never always little jostling a little bit of adjusting and just hard to adjust. Honest if you've been a senator. I was thinking about this in this respect. Quail harris aren't slight similar situation younger much younger than their than the president. Which were junior. You might say than the president the staff much more junior than the president's staff which both the bush and biden cases where people who'd been with him along time we're very senior. People ron claimed bread scowcroft not people who thought they needed to get a lot of advice from some..

"If democrats have to go ahead and do reconciliation. I think that's fine. But i think it'd be good for the country. I think it's probably mostly good policy. But almost more important than the narrow policies of what's going to be built is the kind of sense that we are getting back to something resembling normal politics in america just quickly and then robert can straighten us both out. What worries me is what the house progresses are saying. Which is unless the senate passes the larger bill. They will tank the infrastructure bill but they can't take the for structure bill if there is a republican votes for it. Now that's an interesting question. I mean as if mccarthy could valley toward republicans against it then of course. That's what gives the progressives the veto. I mean the the of how much evita now i do. Think therefore the you know twenty or thirty responsible. Republicans in the house members of this problem solvers carcass. And stuff need to step up and say you know what will be there for this. Bipartisan bill and then you could lose six or ten progresses well let me take a little bit of a push back a little bit of what you said murphy. Because i think he started with the phrase grownup republicans are right. I i think that's probably. I don't know whether that's three or four of them on this right to know i'd say in the house you might get to a dozen with luck and a tailwind i don't even know if you've i mean my question. Even for the bipartisan bill. Do you feel confident that they're ten. Republicans in the senate right now that are willing to vote for it. You know the truth is. I think we're short a couple and it'll take i think the twisting could be done but it's not a done deal you're right so let's be clear. I don't think this is all just about progressive nervousness. That is going to sink this deal. We should understand that. There's that out there lurking in. The waters is the submarine mitch mcconnell with the torpedo doors open and the tubes flooded ready to try to sink any of this stuff right and i think he will. I think what he will try to do is i. He's gonna try to just add time to the clock the longer. This thing goes the less likely it is that anything happens right. I think he understands that. He's run this play before. I think he actually also is probably. He's a smart political tactician. I think he will drive people to vote no while at the same time having some of his marginal Folks some of the people that are up in in twenty twenty two giving them a chance to vote for this and to the point the both of you made to to be To to show they can get something done in an important way in washington that feels for most of america to be very broken. I think we're progressives are. I think i think in fact some of them are playing a very smart card here and that is they are not. They're not negotiating against themselves right that they understand that they've watched. This happened before that if you start moving the goalposts closer and closer to where the deal ends up that the other side is going to take that as well. that's where the negotiating starts. And so i think they're i think they're going to be careful not to give up too much. I think the politics of this though in reality there aren't six trillion dollars worth of votes out there on the democratic. Only saad for reconciliation. I'm optimistic that like bill that the democrats can do this in a two track way. I think if they're not to i if the system doesn't overload itself. I think you can get a bipartisan bill. Which will be good for essentially both parties and then i think democrats will want To do reconciliation probably for a number considerably less than the six trillion that that some on the progressive side. I put out there. And i think by the end of the year you get both of those things dot but again i think time is the enemy. You may be right and i totally agree on time but riddle me this. Here's where i bump on it. There is this premise at least public. And you may be privately as different that this is good for the democrats on the democratic side. If i were them. I would slam through this bipartisan infrastructure. Deal and i take all the credit for it which the president can do biggest microphone at town. It's great for biden then pivot on the republicans and say all right. Let's do some bipartisan stuff. For the country and republicans. Say hell. no we're not going to spend any of this. We go into green eye shade mode and then the dem's can have the fight. They won over new programs to have solar powered hover cars and you know etc etc and that's a fight. Both parties want to have. It would be good for the country to have an old school fight like that. Over philosophy of spending. But by linking it together the deals look like they're in disag- array and mcconnell can see a method by which to sink infrastructure and blamed the democratic split for it. I just don't see the democratic win in this linkage other than appeasing progressives now agree with bill that if we can sober up thirty members of the house to actually vote for this and you know serve their oath. It would be great but remember the house. Progressive caucus has over ninety members if fifty of them vote is a block on the eye on the rhetoric. They're now saying which they may. Just be setting up to be able to make a deal pelosi but if you believe what they're saying they have the power to sink the infrastructure deal over a crying rattle shake about we. Want our big leftie bernie s programs which is a win for the republicans. So i just don't see the smart move of tangling this thing up with linkage when they ought to slam it grab the credit pivot and fight. Well again i think probably. If you're a member of the house most of the time these big packages started in the house and then moved to the senate and what has happened. You know you guys remember this all the way back to the nineteen ninety-three you know the gas tax the btu tax. Do you remember that you get these house. Members end up voting for stuff it gets changed in a better way in the senate and then they're on record for having voted for something they didn't really like now. That's a little different than the scenario here. But again i think for democrats look for us to be successful as a party. Were all going to have to one. It's a big tent to. There's only fifty votes in the senate and there's a lizard. There's really a cap on what can get done. I think for democrats to get this done. They're all going to have to hold hands and do this at the same time. I think it can be done. I think if there's anybody who can do it. Her name is nancy pelosi because she's really really good at this But i i do think you know. Look i and i'll be honest with you. I i hope aggressives. Vote for the bipartisan deal. Because i think getting the bipartisan deal is actually the key that opens the reconciliation. Deal if you kill if you kill the bipartisan deal. Joe mansion is not coming to save you with just reconciliation. He's made that abundantly clear But i will tell you this. I if if anybody is waiting on thirty republicans in the house to do the right thing exhale because You know i. it's just. I have a hard time seeing how that happens. I just don't think kevin mccarthy i don't think he's going to let anybody Really vote for the bipartisan deal. I don't obviously they're not gonna vote for reconciliation I don't i don't. I don't think that the the horizon for kevin mccarthy is all that All that long. But we don't know until you make them put up or shut up..

"People who have any clout in those states whether they're governors or business leaders or educators or ministers in my opinion have responsibility to urge. They're the people who might listen to them to do the right thing. And if they're not urging people to do the right thing if governor gnome or something. In south dakota is busy doing idiotic you know tweets on july fourth complaining about biden's july fourth compared trump's july fourth even though it turns out it wasn't really you know video of trump's twi fourth. You know maybe she can spend a little more time trying to help her. The people who live interstate Avoid the terrible disease while she's fighting for freedom bill via the primary circuit next year. Now i think you're onto something man. I'll take it to the low politics immediately. And i know gibbs will join and quickly on that which is our the biden guys. I would launch a little offense here. One i would encourage the red cross or somebody might a little influence even more politicizing like to cdc to start giving report cards governor start getting afs stuff that political opponents can latch on and and pound on them with second i would launch a big flashy initiative. Okay well the morons run slow on taking it We're gonna super speed the kid thing because we don't want to Close schools again. Or maybe once your state hits a certain threshold. We're going to release it on mass to kids faster the better for kids because the big fear out there is losing again In the family aged adults cohort. And i think there's some things they can do to turn up the heat and they ought to. You know mex- buddhism greatest line of all. How can we live in a country where we actually have to pay people to take a miracle drug. And so i think it's i think it's time for the nice co bid Messaging to kind of turn into the tougher. Kobe messaging and i think there's a good political opportunity for biding their because i think he will get some bumps on delta but he can change the subject to coming soon for kids and by the way you're governor gets an f. now though kristie gnomes the world will say well. That's a fancy pants for your college degree. No at all washington bureaucrats which in republican primary politics probably a washer slight plus but everywhere else it. It'll hurt it'll hurt with independence hurt with dams and it'll hurt with suburban republicans particularly those moms or terrified of missing school. If there's a comeback for their kids and i agree with you on getting some heat it'd be interesting. Biden speaks later today on this subject. And it will. I think people are watching to see understanding where the polling is an and kind of the vaccination where we are with who's gotten their first shot at and what we're seeing on a daily basis in terms of uptake on the vaccine. Will there be some sort of new strategy right. We started with the mass vaccination. Now this is going to have to be very sort of individualized almost like a door to door type thing. So it'll be interesting to see if there's a strategy change or a toughness in the rhetoric. I think it's also going to be to build off a bills point. I think it's going to be up to institutions to make some harder choices I i have a son who's going to the university of illinois This fall to study engineering And i i want to say this. I greatly applaud the university for requiring kovic vaccines for all of its returning students. And i say that both as somebody concerned about public health but also Somebody who's about to pay a college tuition. I i don't i don't want my son sitting in a dorm room with the library locked For the next twelve months because cova rears its head on a college campus and they start canceling classes again and we go to zoom class. And all that sort of stuff. That's not the experience t to your point murphy on on school closures Four four all age kids. I think we're really going to have to have a concerted effort here. Because again. I i don't think this really isn't either or the either is your like i said you're either getting the vaccine or you're almost certainly going to get sick and and you know i. It is remarkable that there are still people after having watched the last fifteen or sixteen months of their lives. That are resistant to doing this again. I get some of the medical reasons for that. But i think that's very few and far between okay. I agree time for the stick now. Moving on of course it's infrastructure decade feels like infrastructure century. The congress is off on recess so the country is safe but the number one issue would still this kind of i don. I called greed politics of infrastructure. Because on one hand and this. I'm i'm gonna sound a little more partisan but i think on this one the the grownup arza right. We have the opportunity to do a big trillion dollar real infrastructure. Bill that will create good jobs. And help with competitiveness and interest rates are low enough that even a detonator like me can say. Yeah okay maybe sell a few bonds at almost no interest rates to build better ports bridges and roads to compete with the chinese and others no-brainer. My guide even our dysfunctional politics. Looks like they're going to cough up over. Trillion dollars needed infrastructure. But now i think it's unreal peril because of the on the progressive side. They're saying all or nothing you know. They've clearly read the leader mcconnell playbook here and they're learning how to be obstinate but it could torpedo the whole thing. There's no way the repub are gonna bless a huge social spending a bill in the billions after what we've already done for covert and other stuff so bill were start with you and robert chime in and etc. Where do you think this thing is going to go. And they get back to town and we're running out of time and the numbers have to start going other dem's gonna stick particularly in. The house is below sea just bluffing to control progressives or are we going to be in to track land because i think the republicans will find it irresistible to throw a monkey wrench into that and it's hard to tell me it's sort of fun to discuss it in the sense that it does remind me of like normal politics. Interest group politics partisan jockeying can you get republicans on one bill but then passed the other one in a partisan way it's sort of back to interest group pluralistic politics that fact healthier than the culture war politics respect if this if this yeah. This gets the more back to debating. This kind of stuff might be a good thing. I kind of think biden and the democrats can pull off the to track. They're not gonna give up and they can't really give up on reconciliation to do some things obviously And they want to pass. Some of it in a bipartisan way. Republicans which i think is a good idea and i think there's been some usual hiccups and two steps forward one step back kind of stuff but i actually think this thing is doable at i think honestly for both responsible. Republicans and for the biden administration the democrats. It's important to do it in this sense symbolically. It's very important. I mean not symbolically politically culturally symbolically for the spirit of the country. It's important to have some bill. Major bill signed by with you know some people from both parties there in a sense that we weren't we both gave up something to work on it..

"Why I'm saying Have you ever heard his version of Ring of Fire by Johnny But we heard that on the tour. Yeah. All right. So here's this legendary punk band social distortion. Shannon Caylor was out on the road opening for Social D and I'll let you take it from there. Yeah, well, this is one of Paulie's favorite stories because it ends up one of the greatest stories of all time assaulted. So basically, uh, we're on the road with Social D and it's our first show with them. And, you know, where were you? Like which state? We're in San Antonio. Perfect were down in San Antonio. Got someone got some s kickers down there. Yeah, it's like we're basically playing like a film or sized venue, right? And so, uh, they have a whole truck. You know, two tracks. We roll up in our very modest van and tried to that's so fun. Mike Ness is pretty legendary Dude like he's one of the original Southern California punk rock voices, and he's still playing. He's turned into more of a country songwriter type guy, but he's still a total badass. Totally. He Oh, Badass, for sure. Like scary. We're going to hear about that shortly. Absolutely. So we we unload and we have our stuff. And we sound check and then I go outside to go check out them, you know, finishing their load up and stuff. And I see that one of their trucks is empty. And that hanging from one of the the roofs of the truck going on in here. Hey, man, what's happening there? Mike Ness, sir, Anyway, so hanging from the top of one of the tracks is a punching bag, And I'm thinking, maybe like a speed back. Her body like a body bag. Big bag. Okay. Big bag Something and also this guy, like, works out after the load out to get ready for the show. Whoa. That's intense, You know? Hello. So I I see him coming up on stage and he's you know about to check out some of his gear and I see him and I say already tax, you know, he's like, covering test doesn't give a visual to the total tattoos. You know, on the next find your legs, your elbows, little bit back grease hair. You know, looking dude. Yeah, dude. Much bigger and stronger than me, you know? And and so I come up to him. And I say, Hey, you know where I'm Shannon, where the stone foxes were opening for you. Thank you so much for having us say Mike ness. I see in your truck that you have a punching bag body bag. Um, and honestly, I would love to learn a few boxing moves from you. And I should have asked for that. But the greatest thing I don't know why I asked, But I did. I said, Would you teach me some boxing moves? And he says, Yeah, sure. Put your hands up. And so as Oh, jeez, like we're going to do this is going Yeah, it's like they're doing right now. So I was like, okay, and I put my hands up. You know, kind of like, you know, like anybody in a cartoon put my hands up. And he just goes ahead and slaps me across the face. Yeah, Slam me straight in the face. Put your hands up, and he says he says, I told you Put your bleeping hands out is what I'm talking about your bleeping hands up. And then what did you do? And I said, sir, I'm sorry, sir. He's like, Yeah, okay. And he just walked past me right on the stage. I don't know if we talked after that, my guess would be no, Probably not yet. We haven't been asked back on another tour, but that was the same show that someone spit on him. And he told everybody else to beat him up to beat up this guy. That's a that's a bad idea. You don't want to spit of my don't scary. It was in Texas. Actually, that was loving. Sorry. I'm good man. Fine. It's a great story, and just Mike telling him to put his hands up and then just cracking him in the face is it's just It's just beautiful is what it is really well, I'm glad you enjoyed. We've got sound from the moment it's right here. Thank you, sir. Me having? Yeah, that was killer getting hit by nest. Thank you certainly have another. Alright, Shannon. Thank you for sharing that. Thank you, Paul. I love hearing that they can't be enough for me in the responses are coming in very favourable there thanking you from the 415 to the 510. For the Mike.

"I think that we need to find out that people have had the immunity. So this is why I'm pushing for the FDA to get a T cell test. The T cell test could go back six months a year, year and a half ago and prove that you've had the virus or not, But the FDA is setting on that telling us they don't have the time to take a look at it. I want to pivot to one of the big issues in Congress right now, and that's infrastructure. The president has said it's a mistake for Democrats not to support the bipartisan deal unless a larger spending package is approved. But he also says it's a mistake for Republicans not to support it because of his continued push for a larger package. Where does that leave the infrastructure deal? Are you hopeful of something passing? I'm hopeful, but I mean, just listen to what you just said. Basically, the president has said three different things that I'm three different days. And, you know, I've said this before, fool me once. Shame on you. Only twice. Shame on me. He's really full this three times. He pulled the rug out from the three times walking away from bipartisan solution to an infrastructure plan. I think Republicans would love to do with infrastructure plan. I think we're going to have to risk wrestle how to pay for it, though, But I think the biggest challenge right now is what the president saying and what he's doing are very inconsistent. And just depends which side of the mouth. He's talking out of it. He's talking to his radical socialist, You know, he's going to say Oh, we're not going to do one without the other. And then he comes back on the other side of his mouth and tells us so Don't don't listen to what I just said. I'm not buying it. I think that we need to be tougher Negotiators as Republicans quit turning the cheek, I'm ready to put my foot down and say, Look, you better just come to us with a deal that we can't refuse, But we're tired. We tried three times and we're no further today than we were three months ago. So is it. Is it something you would support to say? Okay, Here's a bipartisan deal and infrastructure. Yes, it's a deal. The president will sign. Yes, it's something both sides are going to agree on. Knowing that there will be a larger package proposed. The Democrats plan to use reconciliation to maybe try to push through on their own is this You know, the president says, Look, I've said all along this was going to be happening on two tracks. So is his to track plan a deal breaker for you when it comes to supporting an infrastructure bill, so it would not have been until he came out and said he wouldn't do our deal without his deal. That's that's exactly what he said. And now I know he's trying to walk it back. The other piece of the puzzle is we've yet to agree how we're paying for this. The bipartisan deal that the senator struck. I think the pay for is a lot of Boudou. The Voodoo is hiring more IRS agents to collect more taxes. Um, you know, just things like that. I don't think it's real money who, At the end of the day, we're borrowing more and more money from our grandchildren, So I know all Americans want better infrastructure. But the second part of the question is Do you want your taxes raised to pay for it? And that just go all along is to raise people's taxes. So I've got it. I'm not signed off yet on the pay for of the bipartisan infrastructure plan, yet I know you recently wrote an opinion piece for fox news dot com about keeping the Senate filibuster rule. Do you think this infrastructure debate is going to be the basis for a more unified Democrat push to end the filibuster? Boy, you know again, Democrats talking about side both sides of their mouth Two years ago three years ago, they lived with the filibuster. I think half of the Democrat senators are on record, saying the filibuster is a good thing. And for your listeners, the purpose of the filibuster is to make us work together bipartisan legislation that will be long lasting. What happens when you undo tax laws that we just changed two years ago? All of us are run back and talk to our state. Attorney talked to our business attorneys are CFOs. It is a crazy world. If we're going to be changing, let the especially business law every two years. You just can't do that and be successful. I think one of the secrets of the American business success. Is our attention to law and order and then consistent laws as well. Um, so I think that they would have probably pushed back if they were going to the filibuster with the election law issued the HR one and they they suddenly realized how unpopular it was as well when they realize that 80% of Americans believe in voter right motorized. They had to start walking that one back as well. So I think that they're on the run right now. I think they bit off more than they can chew, and they're trying to walk back some of these crisis that they've created. What do you hear from your constituents about this sort of political wrangling in Washington? Are you do you get calls and emails about those things Things like ending the filibuster rule, Or is it You know, more direct local things that you hear about. Yeah, I hear a lot more about inflation. I'm hearing a lot more about why won't people come back to work? So I think we've done 30 some town halls this year. We've done over a couple 100 town halls in the last four years. And when you go to a warehouse or any place you go to and they're missing about there about 10 or 20% short, the people that are working are working overtime. They're working 60 80 hours a week. And this has been going on since Covid. You know if you had a job, you're working overtime during Covid. Um and those people in middle middle income America are looking beside them and asking me why are you paying people more to stay at home? That I'm getting paid here at work. We need everybody rolling the boat the boat here. If you want good schools, if you want good infrastructure, If you want a strong military we need we need everybody rolling the boat together here, So that's what I'm hearing inflation costs. I hear a lot about the Southern border Steel, but probably the big one right now are the people that are working, saying Why Why are you paying people more to stay at home then I'm getting paid to work. Kansas Republican Senator Roger Marshall. Thank you very much for spending some time on the rundown. You've at.

"Now later on in their career it becomes really wrote and kind of You know the risks are less interesting and the songs are are more geared to getting on the radio or whatever. But i think that's a huge strength of the rolling stones and that's part of why they were able to crank out so many just awesome wall to wall classics during this period is there. They weren't gonna mess with it just a mess with that that that beggars banquet let it bleed. Sticky fingers at run is like them. Doing exactly what you want them to do. And doing even better than you could ask it. So it's do you know the urban legend about the song. Gimme shelter in the recording. I don't there is an urban legend that the the woman who who sang on that song mary clayton. Merry clayton is the woman who sing that song. The the urban legend is that she was pregnant when she came into the studio to did that performance. She was just like a session musician singer who they just brought in for this one performance in that the the legend is that she sang so hard on. Gimme shelter that she She caused herself to miscarry. Oh my god. I thought you're gonna say she went into labor. No jesus out In the beatles universe. She thinks so hard that she goes into labor. It has a very happy baby in the rolling stones universe. You miscarry that is really laying it all out On the record. And so. I think that's part of why that's hard song. It's hard to listen to. Sometimes it's gonna be hard for me to listen to next by here. This is this is a speaking of like sad endings. People this is also when it comes to an end for brian jones. Right that is right. That is bleak. Say you say that the like the beatles like you said it feels very separate from that moment. Could you say that like things like come together and here come the sign. And the beatles thing is like manifesting something more positive like it is of that moment but not in like a. Hey look shitty. Everything is but in like. Hey let's make it less shitty. I yeah i definitely think that's a perspective that that's a valid perspective and and that's not one. It's not my preferred perspective. But i certainly wouldn't begrudge someone. Squadcast Launches Video Version of their Service

That's fifty dollars a month. And if you do that you get separate audio tracks. I'm assuming i haven't checked to see if it's to me separate video tracks makes my brain hurt because if i end up with two tracks one for you. Gm one for me and then one video track for you and one of those those video if you have separate video. I'm assuming the audio sync with video. Otherwise that's sinking nightmare. Wouldn't you say how you and i don't know what they've done on that and i. It's possible technically. It's possible right. They're recording both ends in there. You know they record the interface as it. We see it They could do separate. I don't i don't know that's new. I didn't i haven't followed their pricing. I took advantage of the ten dollar offer that came out around christmas time and have been pretty happy with that. So i don't think they'll offer that again so streamed artist fifty dollars a month if you want separate tracks and unlimited streaming for that by the way you have unlimited streaming even on the twenty dollar on the twenty five dollar plan onstream yard squad cast a forty dollars for five hours so if somebody said what's the difference between the two one is ten dollars more and you get unlimited streaming. UN News
On EU's doorstep, UN raises alarm for thousands of young migrants sleeping rough
"Whatever. Two and a half thousand migrants and refugees have been forced to sleep rough in bosnia herzegovina for several weeks on the european union's doorstep despite the fact that suitable sheltered accommodation is available in an interview with you and uses daniel johnson. Peter our chief of mission in bosnia for the migration agency describes the of trying to find a quick solution to this urgent problem. You also explains why it's so important at all. Countries abide by their international commitments to helping vulnerable people in line with the global compact for safe or leeann regular migration adopted by majority of u n member states in december two thousand and eighteen years ago has been a transit country for migrants from greece trying to reach other parts of the european union. Since dan rea two thousand eighteen we've had a perennial problem of a lack of accommodation in bosnia herzegovina. Each window reface seamer thought john just but this year to challenge is actually larger because we have two thousand five hundred eight thousand five hundred refugees in bossier to gopinath sleeping in inhuman conditions. The reason for this is the ability of bosnian political system. If you want to decide where accusations should be because ironically or or cynically she won't. We actually do have sufficient spaces in two centers that we could open within twenty four hours but because a political resistance at the local level do locations. Dc's not happy so it's not a matter of the seasons. It's not a matter of money but it is a matter of political decision-making which obviously now he's ready urgent because the winter conditions are getting worse as we speak so you say that there's a problem of administrative procedure and there's also local opposition to housing the migrants. So that's a very difficult position for you to be in but as you say. The immediate problem is is really urgent. Because it's so cold and the camp that to the emergency count the leaper. Emergency tent camp burned down after being closed because it wasn't suitable for migrants didn't have electricity water. So what exactly is the un migration agency managing to do to help these people well. We're certainly pursuing a two track approach if you like the one we have increased our humanitarian assistance to people sleeping outside interest jackets winter. I sleeping bags sold packages we to get our partners. The danish refugee council and requested try to cover everyone while he's somehow reducing human suffering. Eat obesity does not provide an answer to the need for human accommodation while the other part of the work. We're trying to do trying to support the authorities at different levels to come together and to build a consensus as to where these new accusation could be. So these are the two efforts. But you're sort of stuck in as a un agency in the sense that while we have the resources it's not to or any other un agency to decide where my accusations should be that he's really up to the sovereign country in this case. Both here to go now to decide. I can just go to building erica. Dc sanal migrant accusations so. We're very much dependent on the local political process in while you can support while he can bringing ideas while driving people to get at the end of the day. You're dependent on local. Political decisions has the opposition to migration and migrants in bosnia. Been growing is it. I mean we're not talking about tens of thousands of people by any means are we know we're talking about today. In the county i would estimate about eight thousand five hundred. Marcus enrich In the country of three point five million inhabitants. That should not. I mean that he's not a a a large crisis by any stretch of the imagination There are two issues their first modern stint be located in two parts of the country canceling saudi avoid sonic canton and the frustration specifically again. He's as so being left alone in not heavy as sort of a national strategy. Few michael spreading these accusations center south across the country when it comes to the local population licenses. Debtors small minority that. He's very vocal on facebook older social media channels sometimes using a very phobic language my senses however that if you look at the majority of people they may not have wanted bosnia to become a country for transit migration but they do agree that while the migrants should be our country that they should be taken care of properly absolutely an just wondering what it is that the un migration agency needs to happen. Obviously you want to relocate migrants and for the most part they young men on the where are they from well in terms of the solution. The solution is relatively straightforward from humanitarian operational perspective. We need additional accusation in structures that are adequate ford winter. I think that's in terms of the solution where we need to go in terms of the makeup of the mike and refugee population. Here we have about eighty percents single males and twenty percent families with children and unaccompanied children usually boys between sixteen and eighteen for these families and children. We have sufficient activation so we don't have any families children or unaccompanied or separated children sleeping outside. The challenge faces itself with the single males in terms of nationalities. Biggest group Bangladesh of ghanistan north africa in iraq. He's the makeup of the population that we go have here. I'm what do they tell you. These these young men. Why have they come to europe. Well they've gone to europe of course. Individual circumstances differ but most of them have come to europe to look for a life somewhere fleeing conflict in afghanistan but many of them are looking simply to go to placing within the european union. Start working and send money back to their family. That is sort of the story. You almost universally here. And

Song of the Summer 2020: Which Hit is the Early Favorite?
"So Keith yes. The Fourth of July holiday is like right around the corner here in the US and Many people getting ready for some. Socially distance gatherings and picnics and barbecues and Ho- downs and all that fun Shannon. Shenanigans Yeah all responsibly quarantine of course We thought it'd be good to to kind of devote this episode instead of the weekly charts to topic near and dear to my heart. Song in the summer. It is near and dear to your heart. I love talking about song in the summer. I've written lot about it over the years I. WE'RE GONNA. Talk about. Your world how billboard ranks the top songs of the summer. In terms of our charts department, and then we'll dive into the rundown of V number one song in the summer for each year from two thousand nine through twenty, nineteen. And then we'll discuss some predictions for what could be the top song of this summer of two twenty, twenty Jason loves talking about songs of the summer, but somehow I've yet to convince him to join the Movement for other seasonal lists and rankings such as the top winter jams. Or the most awesome autumnal ditties I just think why Jason. You don't like anything but songs of the summer why? I do like song of the fall. That's my number two just because I kind of like you know last year you had a song like the weekends. Heartless commander November, and it's just like a good fall song like it's. It's a little chilly It's a little bit more introverted but the thing about the song of the summer is that it's it's iconic. What we mean when we talk about song in the summer. A song that you associate with a specific time in your life, a song that is ripe for partying and gatherings Of course during summers, where such things are allowed and you know but anyway I. Love It. Let's get into it. Let's on this summer I some finer points on. Al Billboard actually compiles its annual song. The Chart the charts which you can actually find on billboard right now is a running tally that tracks the most popular songs based on cumulative performance on the weekly billboard, hot, one hundred chart, and that's from memorial. Day through Labor Day here in the United States and this year those charts encompass the charts dated June sixth through September fifth, and at the end of the. The season, the top song of the summer, basically is the top song in terms of overall performance on the weekly, hot one hundred during that span of time, and will reveal that shortly after Labor Day, right now to babies, rockstar featuring roddy rich is number one on the twenty twenty song of the summer chart while in the mix in the top ten or songs like Megan, these million savage between beyond say and the weekends blinding lights. Yes, so we'll get to this year, and and how this is a more competitive year than than some years past including last year. But now that we know how we would determine the song of the summer for the year. Let's go back in time Keith. And revisit what the number one song! The summer was for each year from two thousand nine through twenty nineteen. I WANNA. Point out that we actually have a song of the summer determined for every year. The hot one hundred has existed all the way back to nineteen fifty eight, so if you want to check out every number one. For, each summer, every song of the summer back from Nineteen fifty eight to twenty, nine, hundred nine. You can do that on Dover Dot Com. Just do a Google search for summer songs, nineteen, thousand, nine, hundred nineteen. It'll pop right up. You'll be good to go tested at actually works. That's. It's better than saying. GO TO BILL DOT COM slash chart dash beat slash one five dash two three. You know it easier. It's easier to do it this way. Well I up. We've got two thousand nine song of the summer. It's the black-eyed peas I. got a feeling. Let's take a listen to a little bit of it now. That tonight it's GonNa, be. Good I. In. The summer of two thousand nine belonged to the PS. They actually have the numbers, one and two biggest songs of the summer that year as boom boom POW was number two. The two tracks were so huge in two thousand nine that I got a feeling spent fourteen weeks at number one on the hot one hundred and actually replaced boom boom POW at number one, which itself had spent twelve straight weeks atop the list so. So from the April Eighteenth, two thousand nineteen chart through October, tenth two, thousand, nineteen, hot, one hundred chart, the PS were number one every single week with either boom boom, POW, or I got a feeling which is pretty insane.

It's great to be with your community today. Yeah totally. I'm really stoked to see where our conversation goes. I've been following a lot of your press over the past several months. Some of the interviews you've been doing and keeping up with some your work and there's a there are a lot of milestones to go through but then I know there's a lot you've been talking about lately that I don't WanNa make you regurgitate the same stuff that you've been staying over again someone to try to go in some unique directions here but there's all sorts of stuff for us to Go into right now. One of the kind of segue into a lot of things one of the first things I wanted to ask you about. Is you recently took a trip to Barcelona didn't you? I did I was there for. Icbc Barcelona and span of this. Yes yeah and you. You didn't make it out to the hashish and hemp museum. That's out there I did. I had a great time at the museum. That's Ben drunker zones and operates that museum. He also has one in Holland. Amsterdam and Ben's been old friend of the family for decades and so it was great vehicle able to see his newest outposts there in Barcelona. It's a beautiful building. He's done all this wonderful stained glass work and yeah and if you if you haven't been Barcelona the architecture Barcelona's just every single building every single doorway window archway. is just extraordinarily well-crafted. Beautiful beautiful work and the the hemp and Marijuana Museum. There is no exception and they've ban in his team just done a stellar job with that museum. I encourage everyone to make a pilgrimage to check it out. Yeah I saw some of the photos posted on social media and I was fascinated. How beautiful some of you know the way. Everything was presented the design architecture and everything and I wasn't even really familiar with that museum. Can you describe a little bit about what that museum is like? And kind of how things are presented. And what your experience. There was sure. The museum has multiple levels. So it's two or three stories. There's elevators and stairs that you navigate through it and it's part a history lesson of the plant and and specifically Ham You know the two. The two tracks museum really talks. Most about is is as cannabis as medicine and as an intoxicant and ham has a industrial raw material so so that those are the two focuses. I would say of the museum. And Ben's just got an incredible collection of ancient hemp materials and modern hemp wears also that are represented by some of the leading can't cannabis hemp companies of today. Of course UH sense. He seeds is right next door. Okay Marijuana Museum both in Barcelona Amsterdam and and you can purchase CBD products there and genetics and a whole bunch of really cool will art and culture and Swag from both the museum and since he seats and I was just thrilled to be in Barcelona and an experience that you know we we in the United States. We don't we have cannabis with sort of the first cannabis museum or installation in Las Vegas. There we'd maps just did a big installation in Los Angeles. That was a museum. But we don't have permanent cannabis ham. You know that I'm aware of that's that's as large in a serious As bans I'm sure we have lots of small Wonsan and probably millions of small ones in people's homes. I certainly is yeah I got. I got some in mind mile in my altar of course but you know so when it. It's not easy to have a museum. You know museums don't make money. They lose money and they are about building culture and about keeping something alive for future generations to learn about an and that's hard work to do in our movement in our industry is still in the embryonic stages and I look forward to the day and I hope Stephen I get to be a part of it Where there are something like that. The Hemp Museum here in the United States a- every city should have won. Every every community has cannabis story that goes back hundreds of years and and we can all tell our own version of what's happened over the last hundred years so it's part of the cultural work that I think we're moving into sort of a cultural renaissance canvas. We've had you know we had to legalize and that was just brutal. One hundred year war you know and now we have all these little battles to get legalisation right which we have not done and and of course you know. We have a lot of work to do to get legalisation rights. So that's going to be ten thousand battles that we're GONNA have to fight for that. The cultural work is really something that I think our community is going to have a lot more fun within the political work and I I really. Creativity and culture is been one of the strengths of the cannabis movement community for forever. Going back to the jazz age you know going back to the brothels of New Orleans going back to Jamaica going back to India Longtime in this plant has inspired the creativity of men and women all over the world and so we get to come out of the shadows culturally now and into the light and Where are colors loud and proud and and talk about the plant in ways like a museum? There's millions of ways to express cannabis culture but a museum certainly one of them and you know the there's a big wide open cultural world out there that I hope your listeners will will embrace. There's also I know you know. Science on this podcast. There's a big sign this world of cannabis scientists just like just like culture. It's in the embryonic stages in Gosh. I can't I can't I can't think of something more exciting right now. Then to be working with canvas science or cannabis culture.

The Whys and Hows of Managing Machine Learning Artifacts
"Are everyone I am here with Lucas Ewald. Lucas is the CEO and Co founder of weights and biases. If Lucas is name sound familiar. That's because we Spoke last on the PODCASTS. In August of last year twenty nine nineteen episode to ninety five on managing deep learning experiments Welcome back to the Tamiami podcast. Thank Them. It's great to be back yet. It's awesome be back Folks that are listening may not be able to tell. Probably they can't tell but we're experimenting with Doing video more more for these interviews. So Lucas I who always have a fun time when we get together in person or now having a even more fun all time because we can see one another. So where giggly you know. That's what it is But Lucas folks want to catch your background. They can check out that episode and will link to it in the show notes but What have you been up to since Since last August I know one. Big thing is changed for you. Had A baby fully. Has that changed my life and priorities. Maybe more work relevant. We've been working on improving the product and you know. I think one of the reasons I wanted to talk and come back on your show. Is You know we just recently put out? A A new product called wasted by artifacts that were super excited about Yup and that's What will spend our time talking about you know. Tell us a little bit about the problem. You're trying to solve with artifacts totally. I mean you have such good or did you. Call looking good diagrams. Sort of laying out all the different pieces in the industry. I kind of. I'd love to know how it exactly fits into Tier Diagram. It's always insightful. To see that You're referring to the the book definitive guide to machine learning platforms And I broke out kind of at least my view of the M. L. tooling and platform landscaping into data acquisition and management experimentation and model development and then model deployment and management and so I would think is artifacts in the middle of those two or the last of those who has a straddle. Well I think it might kind of straddle so let me just tell you the problem that we were trying to solve you. Tell me how we should have. We should be dismissed okay. So so basically. What happened was our experiment tracking platform. You feel super proud of it. It's been really popular inside faster growth in anything that I've been a part of and so you know costly asking our users you know. Like what else do you want like? What is this? What does it feel like? It's missing and the biggest request was I was like well look like you know. This is tracking all the experiments. I do and I can compare all the models I build In reality there's kind of other things that are really important for me to track like I want to track my data sets and I want to check the models and I also want to in some cases like connect steps together and kind of like a pipeline And so you know. We build artifacts as Like an adjacent. That's separate because we think that we want to keep our experiment tracking a really tight point solution. That's really good but we also want to make it really easy to kind of track more things that you might care about. And you're the main things like that are probably data. Sets models and and pipelines is important to note. I think some people kind of comparison with like are like looked at my my overview. And they say well how is it? Different than something. Like airflow that manages pipelines and. I think it's important really different right. I it just tracks it. So what what it would do is like you say you have some set of data and you do some transfer on and the navy trainer model and then maybe like you know test that model and a couple of different data sets and maybe you need some quantification than you play it What WB artefacts do as it would basically save all the steps and save the fact that they're all connected together so You know a lot. Like management is the right management. It's model difference. You're not The state machine or the the graph. You're not managing that. You're not standing up. They need an airflow or Luigi or something else that is actually tracking the state of all the objects in this pipeline. And you are kind of doing what you something similar to what you did with the experiment management product where you're capturing metrics of things as they move through this process yet saving it right so you know if you want to save something like your data set or your model we make it really easy for you to save it and version it but then a lot of our users asked for his. Hey we just WANNA track. We don't want to necessarily like you know upload these gigantic files to Your Service. We have a bucket somewhere. We have him on on Prem And so you know we let you You know. Save a pointer to those things If you want to so Yeah I think I think. Model Management and data management is. Maybe the best way of thinking about it. I mean I think what what I know for. Sure is that You know everybody's asking us for this. It must be if it's not a category. I think it's going to become a category and there's certainly lots of tools that you know. There's lots told do pieces of this and in some cases like you have your are more ambitious than this. It's really important to us that we work nicely with all these things. I mean you have such a great that Katameya sort of like you know sort of antenne platforms and You know point solutions and you know what are our real core values winston biases to be you know. A set of interoperable point solutions. That do one thing really well and play nicely with all the things around it and then you try to put that together. The kind of core problem that you're trying to solve here as you come at it. From the perspective of again experiment management where you had folks your tools to track different experiments that they were running as part of their model development process. But you found that. That component was used as part of the pipeline. They were getting data from somewhere they would run it through multiple some series of transformations and then ultimately run an experiment and folks wanted to track more of that process. Oh that Yeah I often Talked to folks that are trying to do kind of providence. Solve the this data providence problem or or decision providence. Even where you've got a model that makes an inference and you want to Kind of go all the way. Back from that inference. The decision to you know the model that was deployed in the experiment. That said that that model was the best model than data that started in a training set. That allowed you to train up that model that one and you know the data points that influence ultimately the data points and influence this decision missiles. Solve more of that problem than you were doing before. Yeah I think like you know There's lots of really interesting paint points here. That people talk about all the time like you know model explain ability and model reproducibility and those are. Obviously they're like huge problems. But I think like the the sort of core thing that we see a lot of our user struggling with is just literally knowing what data set the model got trained on what data set actually or what model actually got to put into production so so. That's the core focus. We have like you know. We work with Or the couple companies that do you know kind of retailed are trying to build systems that automatically can detect like what you're buying. Is you walk out like the Amazon store and know one of the things that those companies will have in common is their like constantly getting new labeled data rate because they have cashiers in their store there lay labeling the data live and they often have they always new products coming in right and so what happens to them is that they really like never train the models on the same data set right so it's actually like every single time at trains. It's sort of like a different basket of stuff that the models get trained on. It's not just incremental growth of their training data set but there it's different. It's just it well. Actually in that case is incremental growth. I'll say we have actually have the opposite thing where it's not. Incremental growth is actually shrinking. So you know some of our customers get Kind of privacy. Take downs right. Where you know. People will say Actually one one company with this talked with this as I robot right where you know people say take my data set out of I robot data. Of course they do that right but then what happens is now your your data. Set has certainly changed right. So it's not exactly Apples apples Maybe right maybe it's a but But you know I think that the overhead it sounds simple maybe a two track all that But the important thing is that you really really have to do it right. Like you have to have a system where you're always tracking it the same way so that when you do this comparison it's really easy to say You know which is what they'll say. Look another issue is like with our vehicle companies. They don't they have actually so much data typically that they they never tried it all their data right so they're they're actually every time they build a model selecting pieces of it and they're often something different pieces like for different purposes. So I guess like you know. Some case. Data sets growing some cases it's shrinking and some cases. You're like picking and choosing from different data sets but in in all these cases You know we think the really like core need here or they didn't need the pain that we want to solve it just like we will keep track of what data sets your. Your model was trained on.

Wisconsin governor suspends in-person voting for primary
"Brand well because of current virus Wisconsin governor Tony Evers has suspended in person voting in tomorrow's presidential primary he's a Democrat and his order comes after nearly a week of back and forth with Republicans in the state legislature there they rejected a request from the governor to postpone the primary like other states have meanwhile the Supreme Court is weighing a lower court judge's order to extend Wisconsin's deadline to submit absentee ballots Jessica Levinson is here to talk about all this with us she's a law professor at Loyola law school in a regular legal legal hello hello well let's begin with even order it postpones in person voting and he did that unilaterally does he have the authority to do that I'm gonna give you everybody's least favorite law professor answer we're not sure and I actually think we're gonna be saying that a lot over the next few months I mean there's going to be a big issue of trying to secure elections and protect elections in the time of a global pandemic and so does the governor have the power to unilaterally change the election date spent a lot of I've been back in Wisconsin about that I hate to say it but we'll know when a judge rules on whether or not that's permissible right and Republicans have resisted that why have they resisted postponing in person voting right so there's no question that legally speaking if the Republican controlled legislature had decided that yes we will postpone the date of the election that that would have been permissible that they as a state as the representatives of the state could have done that what they've said is that we can't postpone for a couple reasons one they said it's not just the presidential primary that's on the ballot it's also a lot of state and local races and we don't want those to stand vacant now Inc in the governor's executive order he said they don't have to stand vacant I'm just going to extend the terms of the state and local officials what the Republicans have also said is that they don't want this huge change an influx of vote by mail because they're worried about issues of fraud and essentially that the election would lack integrity I think all of us frankly the studies on that indicate that those aren't real fears that we don't have to worry about voter fraud date what's much a much bigger worry is making sure that everybody who wants to vote actually camp out right and so along those lines there's also this dispute over absentee ballots a federal judge extended the deadline in Wisconsin and that was upheld by the federal by a federal appeals court but now the Republicans have appealed to the US Supreme Court what's going on there with the absentee ballot dispute yeah what's going on there is there's two parallel tracks one there's a legal track that we were just talking about which is this argument by Republican lawmakers that it really infringes on the integrity of the election to do things like increase vote by mail or route increase the amount of time that you would have to return your ballot and that's kind of the legal argument that's going up and back the second track is really a political one where for Democrats it's better if there's more time if more people show up for Republicans it's really a big game if we don't count those vote by mail if we don't extend the time there's a really big judicial action in the Wisconsin Supreme Court Republicans have I believe the reporting is openly said you know it might have been actually better to have the selection when it's a lower turnout so we're sure we can keep that particular seat this is really a preview of I think a lot of what we might see in the fall these parallel tract arguments on the one hand legal on the other hand political okay let's turn to another story in the news right now in the midst of this huge pandemic at least six conservative states of trying to restrict access to abortion a federal District Court judges blocks nearly all of those orders but not in Texas the fifth circuit court of appeals left aligned Texas go into a fact on a temporary basis so I know a lot of states are saying no to elective medical procedures right now but there seems to be at a time difference here rate when it comes to having an abortion is not considered an elective procedure but not by the American college of obstetricians and gynecologists in so it's gonna feel like deja vu all over again from about forty five seconds ago but what we're seeing in this case is also two different arguments one is the legal argument of whether or not you can basically prohibit and or postpone these abortions the other is really the political argument a lot of Republican controlled states trying to restrict access to an abortion so you know to your question is this really an elective procedure no it really my understanding is medically is not considered an elective procedure and of course there is a much different timeline when it comes to an abortion at a certain point out you've waited so long that it might be for instance illegal under the state's loss to happen abortion in so this brings up again this kind of Wu Ming fight at the Supreme Court at some point we'll have to take up about the contours of abortion rights what grounds on what grounds did the court of appeals let the Texas law go into effect yes so what the Texas court said and as you said this was really an out liar decision every other federal court that's taken the sap has said no you can't implement these types of prohibitions or restrictions Texas court said as the state has the power to do that looking at the states broad police powers to do things like limit the number of elective procedures you have to do other things like we talk about all the time like closing restaurants cook closing schools that it would fall within that power so I think the conservative fifth circuit really kind of went out on a limb and frankly I don't think the ruling is consistent with the current standard they Casey versus Planned Parenthood distinct standard so do you think the Supreme Court will take this one up when it convenes at when and if it reconvenes physically and or virtually it you know it depends on how long this particular prohibition is in place but I think it's gonna be really hard for the court to avoid this they may try and issue some very short opinion which basically says this isn't consistent with our current standard and then wait for a bigger case to come before them to really make the decision about whether or not states can essentially say there's an emergency exception to the current standard that there's an emergency

Podcasting Tips & Tricks with Lyndal Harris
10 Steps to Launching a Successful Podcast
"Step number one is creating the a strategy. Now this is not a small step. It's not a step that's going to take you ten or fifteen minutes. It's about sitting down and gnashing out your purpose knowing who your audience is knowing if they listen to podcasts. Knowing what message you're going to share with the world how are you going to share. That message is going to be interviewed. You through stories or monologue are you going to do solo shows that educating people using case studies etc etc so really when you work out that pace up front the rest of it will fall into place. Sorry that first step as I mentioned is not going to be a quick fix step. It's it's something that you really do need to spend some time particularly if your podcast I lines to a business which has mentioned a few times mainly my clients and my listeners have a podcast launch their business so you really need to work out how that is going to work at the top of your funnel and how it might work to get people people into your email list. Hey might bring them through your funnel so that they are interested in your products and services. The one thing I have found here is where clients lions. Don't have that clear lawn. Meant podcasting becomes a very big chore. A big project. That isn't really working for them. So if you get this point clave upfront or if you sit down and spend some time now if you already have a podcast working out if you need to change tact to make it funnel title into Your Business then it's something that helps you with the next steps in implementing your podcast launch. The second step to talk about that is choosing a podcast title and creating a tagline. So when you're looking at doing a title there's a few different ways you can name the shy after yourself you. You can name the Shari after topic that people are looking for or you could name it. Something really quirky this a few different things to think about he. If you are. We're going to go with the quirky style of name. Then I think it is very important to have clear tagline because people are not going to be searching on your quirky night. Most of the time. If you're going to name the show after yourself. I think that works well if you have a following I think if you haven't got a following in your starting from scratch touch than that might not be the best way to do it but perhaps using a word or a couple of K.. Words in your todd might be a better way. If you're launching launching to know audience and wanting to grow remembering down the track you can actually change the name of your podcast but there's a couple of steps within this step that I think you need to take and that is google searching as well as going into apple podcast directory and searching the name in there as well as has possibly even looking if the deny name is taken. Because you don't want to get everything ready get your out work done right this amazing description get everything ready. Ready to launch his Shari to realize after you've launched his show that there's already one out there called that Oh very similar or there's already a business name out there with that who it could very easily come and ask you to change your name and if they have tried mock you will have to change the name of your shy suspending. A A little bit of time there can be really beneficial so that you know that you can move forward with that name. Now having a tagline a lot of the high seas days Ask for a tagline again. That can be really short and really specific. It could be telling people what you're going to talk about. It might be telling people who the main audiences ince's but Cape it really clea and this is where you can wave in some k words as well obviously not keyword stuffing this section nine step number three is getting your cover. Art created neck creating a cover it needs to be to a very specific dimensions. Otherwise is apple. PODCASTS will not accept it so you need to actually get a cover art created that is between fourteen hundred and fourteen hundred pixels up to three thousand by by three thousand pixels if you are looking to do this yourself. Canvas does have An option as well in their cold album art and ye can go in there and use that to play around with but if you create something at eight hundred eight hundred you won't be able to upload that into your hoist waist and submitted to the podcast directories. It'll come back with an era so just be really mindful of the size of it. Now when we're told me about the design of it something you want to keep in mind is that most people are looking at the Thumb Nile on a device like mobile or an IPAD. People might look at it on the computer screen and when you start creating it it looks messy when it's on your screen that when you're looking at it on a mobile phone it's a thumbnail size and so with that in mind you want something that really pops out if someone is looking through the lists and you want something that has not got too much wording on it. Because if I'm looking at on on the phone I can't read what you're tagline is or if you've put a couple of sentences explaining what the podcast is about so really Cape it minimal. If it's a business as miss podcast you might decide to keep it aligned with the branding of your business so using the same France or the same colors or the same imagery But just think about something that will pop out when you're looking at it on something as small as well. Fine step for is rushing your podcast description. And now you'll podcast. Description is super important is what people look at after the name of your Shari and can have a big impact on whether people actually want to listen and subscribe so here is where you want to craft it really carefully include some keywords. In he waves the main again don't use it as a place. Nice to keywords staff but think about what people might be searching because it is what will potentially show when people are searching for certain things things in the podcast directories so choose your words carefully. Maybe ask a few questions or identify the audience that you want to listen to the Shari but make sure you spend a little bit of time. Crafting a really good podcast description. Now a little word of advice here is Don. Have a look at podcasts. That you really enjoy Oy and go and have a look have I've written description or perhaps just even search through some of the podcasts that you subscribe to and just the different ways that people arriving them because it is a Cape Cod of your podcast for especially if somebody's new to you or in your new in your audience. Then they may well look at the name of your podcast. Then they're going to look at the description to say if they wanted then go and have a listen to it. Creating creating an intron altro is step number five. So creating an intro at troy now this is something that will do a whole episode on in itself self and in fact quite a few of these steps will have their own podcast episode in future. But when you're looking at creating your insurance at tre it's about getting a pace of royalty free music music and blending it with Voice Iva so a lot of people in the past tended to get a voice of oddest on whether it's through an agency or on Fava and get them to record it but I am finding now with the Solo podcasters. It's probably more common now for the actual podcast. A true record that voice over element and then blend it together with the music now. One one point of note he is remembering that your intro and Atra is part of your podcast branding. Sorry really make sure that that music AAC is aligned with your brand but is also aligned with what your audience would expect. I have listened to podcasts broadcasts in the past where the music is tar surely not aligned with what I thought the podcast cost is about and you do feel like there is a real disconnect this. Sorry if you don't want to or you can't find something on the music sites then you can always get somebody to create a bespoke piece of music for you. That might be more in alignment but just take into account found that your personal taste in music might not be the best music to choose your podcast intro. Step step number. Six is choosing your recording platform and device. So he now at step number six is where I start to say. That the software and the microphones and the the equipment is something that you should think about can say that the first five steps on even thinking about which microphone and a lot of people get dotted. Did on that first question of which microphone. Should I use but I think you really need to be looking at some of those steps. Step one two five. I nine nylon down the branding and the strategy and the description of your podcast before you even start to look at software equipment. I would suggest that you do some research coach when you're buying your microphone and find something that suits your requirements. Because there are different microphones that are better in different types of spices spices. So you really want to think about where you recording are you in a room that has carpet and curtains and cushions can soften the echo or. He's he's sitting in a tiled room with Florida sailing gloss windows with a very high ceiling which will obviously have a lot of reverb so you just need to be mindful about way Eh. You'll do most of your recording. Some people are out on the road recording since I need to have different. Equipment and different microphones again. I interviewing people all the time going to interview in person or you're going to do it over a platform like zoom. Aw then Castro something like that so really be mindful about that before you just go go out and go looking for a microphone to stop podcasting now when it comes to software. There's lots of different suggestions. Some of the editing editing platforms that you might want to look at the garage band or density. Oh Gosh there's a Darby addition this. Sorry many different editing editing programs that you can use their good ones to start off with To actually record interviews you might want to look at Zoom. You might look at then. Kosta or squat broadcast or something like that Bay mindful when you're recording an interview that you won't use paces software that can split the tracks per person because does it just makes the editing a whole cleaner if you've got two tracks unfortunately skype don't offer that in their recording at the moment sorry I tend to sort of veer away from recommending skype. Because it doesn't have it in its inbuilt platform if you do use a third party record with skype then that Martin allow you to have those split tracks but just the skype recorder doesn't at this stage step. Seven is to download a piece of software. A cold or phonic when you edited your episode together year. He's a pace of software called phonic which it's an automatic audio I post production tool and it just levels everything it gets it to the right bit right. It gets it to the right volume for podcasts. And it can level level tracks if you've got a guest that's quieter than the highest etcetera etcetera and it just finishes it off at Polishes at the end. Sorry than that step is download off organic step. Eight is to create your hosting account. Now there are a whole range of different heists out usually I will sit sit with recommending. Someone like Washer Omni Studio. Lipson pod Bain. That's just to name a few but the way that podcast works. Is You sign up to a host and you integrate that. RSS Feed you. Get through the host with the different directories like apple podcast. Google podcasts spotify. STITCHER radio I heart radio all the other directories where you have your podcast appearing. And then all you need to do is upload h episode to Your Hosting Account Count and that will push it out to the various directories step number nine is submitting your podcast to the various directories. Sorry it's it's you. Set up your hoisting. And can't you sit up your show details and your artwork and you description and you've uploaded the first couple of episodes and then you want to submit it to apple podcast awesome stitcher and spotify now. Google podcast is a slightly different process. So you might just want to Google how to get your podcast on Google podcasts. It costs And you can google any of the directories that you want to get onto all you might find really helpful resources in the help and support section of of your host cell look that up and lastly step number ten is post your podcast on your website and share it everywhere on social media because that promotion pace is super important. Did and so if you have a lot of people subscribing within a seven day period and listening to your podcast then you're more likely to be pushed up the charts that way

"Not gonna wait for someone to validate what i wanna do where who i am and feel like for so many of us extraordinary ordinary women. We wait for someone to tell us. We're good enough. We wait for someone to say you've got this. We wait for someone to say. Go do this instead of. I'm just saying i've got this in that that inner critic when you when when you made that switch right i mean you had that inner critic showing up. I'm certainly uncertain. It's like it's okay. I'm gonna i'm not gonna do this anymore but this is this <unk> that you made. How did you really hush that the inner critic and step into it anyway. You know i think because i lost it all i had nothing left to lose. I had people saying horrible things about me i i had you know my what i felt my reputation. My ego was crushed to as you get older. At least i'll say hey you know i stopped caring so much a mode other people think and i was more on fire about sharing message than i was being perfect and what i look gleich and i feel like when women come to me and they can really make that shift and realize that to make the impact you're here on this earth to make take you have to be willing to let go of eko and that the women out there that we that we feel are leaders and visionaries generes and and you know leading great movements never once is at about what they look like you don't look at oprah who was told by the way she does not have face as i say oh you know what i listened to her. If she looked like this or he or she she'd be so much more successful. If people fall in love of assault not faces cami love you for that yes because when we when we just show up authentically as who we are instincts can start to shift for us right. Yes and that's <unk> sounds like what you did right. It's like i'm not going to be in that room full of bikini clad models anymore. I want to go be me in your own business then yet the third business but there is v i have to tell you it has been the most fun the most successful the most liberating i asked. I was a single mom for three years. You know it's like i just i really single mom in the mix of all of this like me. I got pregnant at at forty four so my daughter's four now so molina last year. Have i been in this beautiful relationship. I mean it's been in two years but we lived together for the last year <hes> and it was you know i moved out there so inspired living at that time was is growing tremendously and i figured out i'm having a baby. How am i. I have no family around me. Let's do this but it but i have to say it it made me even stronger and my message even clearer and my vision even more bright and yet i was so scared scared of what other people would think of me too so it's <hes> i'm not gonna say. I have a steel wall around me because i'm human but i feel like you kinda get over or yourself and i know who i am and i know that if you don't like me it's okay. You don't have to buy into what i'm doing because i have the right people that do now right so you teach people how to release show up authentically in their business and you call it the it factors that s. so tell us more about that going up entertainment. I swear to god. I heard that word all the time. Oh yeah did she have the it factor yes and and then i remember when i own the agency we had these open calls which every month people could come in and audition for the agency and cami. It was so funny because i really we saw this it factor at play where someone would come into the room as clean as could be right no resume no experience and man they had equality about them that was just captivating and it had nothing to do with what they look like. You're so right and so i remember hearing this. It word and i feel like we all have it like. I get asked all the time you know. Is it something you're born with or. Is it something that's developed. I think it's both i think some people are in just born with this natural <unk> qua- this spirit that you're drawn to i feel like other people can work through the the limiting beliefs and fears that keep them. I'm from shining and ignite it and that's where my training is called. Ignite your factor because when you really understand who you are and i feel like most of us. Don't take take time to figure that out cami. I would say probably ninety percent of people on the planet. I love where you're taking this because i'm just going to throw this in here. You're going to check out this so i talk about building your brand from the inside out so it's like who are you at your mary essence. How do you build your brand from the inside out and my book is called fired answer so there's is the fire were originally yes in. My event that i do in november is called ignite. Girlfriend are literally soul sisters here yes we we are aligned. Yes i couldn't agree with you more. You know it's like yes. You wanna look great. You wanna feel great like i teach people how to dress. You know how to do their makeup. All of those thanks but that is just it's just icing on the cake the cake scott to be good by itself and you have to love the recipe you have to love putting it all together and so it it really is all of that and it's so much fun. It is so much fun when in in seeing the transformation that these women have and it's like oh my got i finally have permission. I finally get it. I in that is just fire right there just so excited and so we work with them yes on what he thinks of the camera he says is our for finding that transformation i get. I think it's a bit of inner knowing. I think it's acceptance. I think it's really realizing what you're great at and not being ashamed or or feel bad when you say i. I'm really good at this. I think women have this tendency should not ever wanna toot their own horn. I can't stay on this. A guy will call him america's best any day right the guy out there and then i also i think so it's it's an inner process for sure but then i think also when you start really seeing the results that you have other people get and you do that enough. There's just the confidence that comes with that where i mean. I have no doubt about it. We're really great of what we do. We're actually pretty or amazing what we do and because i it's proven it's true i've seen it over and over again and i think that sometimes when people are starting a business. They lack confidence because they haven't done the r._n._d. They haven't seen the the results yet and they're still trying to find the message or find the client and i think once you do that and you see a track record of success. Those two things that inter knowing acceptance and then results are so powerful. That's awesome. That's awesome. So is your business. It primarily focused on video or is there. Is there more expansive as tommy. Tell me a little bit about that. Oh it's so much more significant people come into and do us for the video day like that's the front door of our home writing as they come in for like the video training right what we often find cammie when people come into the house is is that they have built a business that is sustainable. They're often working-time for dollars. They're still doing everything on their own. They're so fearful to get support and again. I have been there. I have that t shirts. No we have we comes. We have to cut two tracks in our business. We have have the in front of the camera and then we have behind the scenes you cannot be amazing on camera and put yourself out there and not be able to scale and have systems in automation and teams or you vice versa. You can't have all the systems and team and have no one coming into your business because you're not found anywhere right so it really is this beautiful center g. and and cross kind of like building of the outward and the inward. Yes people don't come to us for that. We don't market that side of the business so much because so many people are already doing that. Were very specialized on. I like your model a lot because is it is break people in in in that front door but it's it's it does take all of that to be able to bring <hes> wholeness to a business sustainability lead to a business right exactly and can i say that most people are trying to market too much. You know i think because women were so multifaceted multi talented i. I'm not kidding one of our clients who i love to death. She came to us as a celebrity event planner iraqi healer and a yoga instructor and i'm like what in her and her site. You couldn't even figure out what she did really like. What how do you market yourself. Like what are you how does one into the other and this and that and i feel like that's kinda. Rare people come to us. Look like here's the whole plate and people just don't even know if they wanna bite yet you know and i think that especially because they're so much content right now in there so how many people online you have to be able to uniquely differentiate yourself and i find that when people come to us they're so afraid to niche down mike mike but that's the only way you'll grow out. I don't know if you say that because nobody tony i mean that's people who are trying to be too many things to you know to to many different people and egypt. You just can't be all of that we can't you can't add good message. You can't have good connections. You can have real strong teachings. If you're if you're too many things to too. Many people and people can't say to you don't know if you're talking to them. You know confused. Mind will never buy so stop confusing think
