Rep. Chip Roy Reacts to Biden Withholding Monoclonal Antibodies From Florida and Texas

"Is even more horrifying And we have the Montgomery County judge here in Texas, which is near Houston. Who posted on Facebook yesterday, the day before. I'm not sure if you saw it where he right. He wrote out the 2000 Texans that were benefiting from the treatment that they had put in place to have a clinic or set up there to run these mono monoclonal antibody treatment. And it was successful. And this is where the vaccinated and unvaccinated and then now you've got the Democratic leadership in Washington coming in and saying no, no, no. We're going to step in and interfere with the market and create a problem that didn't really exist. And I look, I wrote a letter to the HHS on Monday, lighting them on fire about this and raising this issue up the flagpole and then load the whole We get 24 hours later, they were gonna have a briefing on Friday. We had that briefing today, Mark And I asked twice. I got cut off. And then I got back in Q asking a second time. Hey, how many, Uh, doses do you currently have a supply? How many can be made per month and what's the demand? You tell me the numbers. You show me how there's some massive national shortage that you've got to interfere, and they would never answer the question. Literally, he said. Well, we'll just have to get back to you. The numbers to wait you're stepping in and rationing care. Rationing what Texas can get, and you can't even tell me what the numbers are its political. They started off of saying seven states have 70% of the demand on this stuff and get never mind in January. It'll be 10 different states Mark because we know how this virus works. And yet that's what they're doing. It's political. It's purposeful and people's lives at stake. And they're doing it because they don't want to talk about treatment. Not just this. But after cork wine back when that was more effective. Let me tell you something about, uh Hattrick chloroquine. I've been taking that for months. Have heart disease and asthma. Has an harm me in any way.

Dallas Cowboys Starting Tackle La'El Collins Suspended 5 Games

"Lyle collins suspension. Which for those of you. That have not heard yet. Which i'm sure you have but Friday afternoon it was announced that he was getting a five game suspension for violation of the substance abuse policy There's nothing on the books in the nfl drug policy that says a substance abuse issue is a five game penalty. There is a for the second time you're punished for methamphetamines. Or amphetamines and adderall. And diuretics and things like that That is a five game suspension. So i don't know if there's some somehow taking that as precedents and applying it lyle's case and somehow It's still murky as to what exactly. He was in the drug program for There was a report on sl from jason lockenfora that he's been tested ten times a month for the last eighteen months which that's not totally unusual. I know there have been players before that have been tested with that. Frequency randy gregory had talked about that When he came back so it's it's not totally unheard of for that to happen. But i don't know why lyle would. It have been in the program but missing a test missing. These tests are refusing member. Whatever the story is because apparently it was not a failed test. Missing these tests would result in this suspension. Only if he had already been on the program. So something's off here where we're missing a lot of details here and hopefully we can get some more clarity about it But as it stands now we don't know exactly what he's in the program for. There's lyles disputing the word. Representation is disputing the refusal to take the tests and and they're in this appeal process. They've already appealed apparently and it was rejected but they feel like the appeal process has not been exhausted. And so that's part of where this tension is coming from. Mike mccarthy didn't have any other comments on it he just said they were not surprised suspension. So this is something. That's been brewing. It's been something that's been out there. And that the cowboys have been aware of

Wagering Strategies in Final Jeopardy!

"Wanted to talk about a final jeopardy about a week and a half ago right. The one episode. You watch was officially. The season now is on august. Thirteen right right. And there's a guy who's been on it for a while. He's very good right matt man. Yeah it's very knowledgeable. He does rub you a little the wrong way people have. I'm okay twitter and stuff. Just his attitude and my girls don't like it because he never says what is or who is he always says. What's her who's funny. Because you know the answer is you know you can bet on that. He'll say what's you can bet on that. Okay just uses contractual uses contractual. It's he's very kurt me. Does it in his regular speech when he's talking to if you've noticed okay so it's just kind of his attitude. He's just an odd kind of character. Right well tell us about. This city's a bad guy. Okay just a little different to tell us about this final jeopardy you had some. I guess we're talking. But this is a gambling podcasts. Folks so there is some game theory here. maybe. I think you're gonna talk to them. Basically my point is. I'm talking about how emotion plays into how you risk. Okay and we all see that when we gamble when we play craps. I'm very emotional. You're less emotional but you know people are emotional. They even even on slot machines right casino kind of counts on that so sure they get somebody gets down and they'll pull out another hundred because they just sure they can get it back right in the next thing you know. They've lost four hundred instead of the two hundred that they thought they were gonna lose and the casino kind of on that but this episode at the end was particularly fascinating to me and my wife and our daughters we all four watched it and we talked about it for like a half hour after it in. Okay yeah well it came down to final jeopardy met the champion had twenty seven thousand two hundred dollars. Okay and then there was a lady and she had thirteen thousand six hundred so exactly exactly how going into final jeopardy. So that doesn't happen too right and she was actually a very good player. Okay she had actually been in the lead ahead of him at one point but then she got a double jeopardy question wrong and she lost a bunch of money and so she ended up with exactly. Half of the third contestant was virtually out of the pitch right he had like twenty four hundred dollars. He had a very small amount. I mean the only way he could actually win as if they both busted and that wasn't going to happen because then would would have to bet at all right now if you haven't watched he's a little aggressive not like james wholesaler was in that he'll bets it all every time but the first time he gets a double jeopardy he bets it all okay. The second time usually he has a big lead and so he'll just bet a smaller amount like two thousand or something. Okay sure so you know. He strategizes pretty well and he's very sure of himself because he's a good player so it gets down to the final question. I don't remember what the question it was a question. We won't go into it. Was it was a question that had three possible answers and you had to come up with two of them to the right right. And so based on their bedding strategy we assumed that this woman would bet at all right because if she gets it right she double surmount she has the same as him yes and then. We assumed that he would bat some amount less than half will. Why wouldn't you just zero zero. It would be tie and now that's a legitimate mood. That's what i would have thought. Then he has to face her in a one question playoff and it really comes down to. Who's quicker with the buzzer. No i understand that. But if he gets anything right and wrong and she gets it right he ludens right. So but i can understand him not betting zero because she was very quick with the buzzer. Because he was a very good contestant and he might have thought. Look i need to beater now. Because i might not beat her in. You know the one question because it really boils down to that. That tiebreaker is just who's quicker with the buzzer. Okay all right. So i see what you're saying. Is this since this is not a time based thing right you know you have plenty of time to write your answer and everyone can answer right. And he's confident. So this is the category i thought. Okay i know enough about this category or whatever so all right really bad but it turns out she did bed at all and she missed it right so she ended up with zero zero but then what was interesting to me is in he. Bet one dollar okay. So if he bets one dollar and gets it wrong and she by chance had gotten it right he would lost if he that's one dollar and she gets it wrong whether he gets it right or wrong. These still wins right. So why wouldn't he bet like two thousand or three thousand only a dollar. And that's what we talked about roy who i do l. dollars thousand doesn't make any difference. Because he gets a wrong he loses. Gets a righty wins. Yeah right if she gets it right if he gets it wrong loses if he she gets it right he gets it right. He wins if she gets it wrong. He wins anyway doesn't matter what he bet. Okay so and so. I'm sorry to interrupt you but you know the more i'm thinking about it. Now is yeah. Why didn't he like thirteen thousand. Something like that right. Because that's money in his wallet right. That's my point. I mean why we a- dollar why we need that two thousand five thousand five. He could have bet money good about thirteen thousand five hundred ninety nine ninety right. I mean easily could have done that and he's still would've won. Yeah if you're right. He gets way more money okay. And he's pretty aggressive guy as his play shows but he only a dollar and my wife immediately turned to me and said because his personality it's more satisfying to win by dollar than to win by ten

It was life or death and that's what combat combat is like seven thousand miles from the chaos in afghanistan marine corps. Major thomas shuman has been operating on two time zones working day and night desperately trying to get his former interpreter. Sack out was with me. Let me clear and america wants to come home. We will get you home today. Promises from the white house but the reality on the ground is much worse than anyone could have imagined including new reports of the taliban harassing and beating americans. I actually got with one of these fan belts. Not moving fast enough. It's been another tense. Difficult day here in kabul people still struggling by the thousands to get through those checkpoints to the american side of the airport onto those evacuation flights and a way to some sense of liberation. Some sense of freedom at least release away from the danger here in the city tonight. Lists of names did not turn out to be true as false electors. They built an elaborate story in narrative about a stolen election in georgia and claimed that if brian kemp did not call a special session of the legislature to change the law before the runoff that the election would be stolen again as the election. Drew near and brian kemp refused to call a special session. They complain louder. Brian kemp the speaker of house. Lieutenant governor all came out and said there could be no special session because it was well settled legal principle. You can't call a special gesture session and changed. The rules of election already underway. It would be thrown out and not apply anyway. It was a waste of taxpayer dollars to do it. And it would do no good. Several members of the state senate continued to advance the fiction of a stolen election Senators brought jones and brandon beach. Brassica william lincoln and others have continued to advance this narrative of stolen in georgia there were hearings among republicans in the state senate where people came in and presented nonsensical fairy tales about the stolen election. One person came in claimed to have hacked the voting system in georgia. It was not true. "Been taken off line. The house made president trump the first. Us president impeached twice. Now the senate's turn once that trial begins. Perhaps after joe biden's inauguration january twentieth and aesthetic patera covered at the capitol today an s era. And it's gonna be really interesting to see what happens in the senate now today. We saw senate majority leader mitch. Mcconnell saying he hadn't made up his mind yet when it comes to impeachment sleep which was huge. That's the senate majority leader Saying he's considering possibly voting to convict president trump. It'll be interesting to see whether or other republican senators follow suit. There had been some reporting that mitch. Mcconnell was was looking at impeachment as a way to purge the party of trump because of president. Trump is convicted by the senate. You would not be able to run again in twenty twenty four and that's part of the reason. Impeachment was such an appealing option for democrats. I think what happened today. Though when we saw you know a vast majority of house. Republicans did not vote to impeach. The president there were ten. Did vote to impeach the president but a vast majority of them while condemning president trump condemning his rhetoric condemning his actions. These still didn't feel impeachment was warranted. So i'm really curious to see how senators look at this. Whether they have the same considerations we saw president trump putting out that video shortly after he was impeached. Putting out a pre recorded video during which he tried to condemn the violence at the capitol. It'll be interesting to see whether that's enough for republican senators. Abc's as kotehra with us. Who covered up the capital today. Our white house correspondent karen travers. Now karen go back to something Steve roberts said about we thought that maybe next week president trump would leave washington and hold a rally likely in florida that could be seen as the kickoff to a potential twenty four campaign. There is no talk of that happening anymore. Especially after what happened last wednesday and we don't know what the president is doing between now and when he leaves washington at some point around january twentieth. We don't know what he's gonna do in the weeks right after that but we do know that here. In washington there will be a legal team defending him in the senate impeachment trial. That is not what anybody was predicting Eight days ago simply stunning. Abc's karen travers. Our white house correspondent want to get a final thought from recliner political director rick. Well this is all uncharted territory. I mean to have the cascading crises of the biden presidency. All coming now amid the this impeachment push we. We've seen so many superlatives over the years as you as you noted that the top aaron but this is this is a new one for all of us in a new one for washington we are. Our political analyst steve over the last two months donald trump has done an indelible and eternal damage to his own legacy. This is self inflicted wounds. "Seven days from now joe biden. We'll be sworn in as president in that same place. This had the active encouragement of a city president of the united states between those two historic events. The house of representatives today took the unprecedented step of impeaching president trump. For a second time the charge inciting the homicidal mob that laid siege to capitol hill reject the demand for fealty to one man over fidelity to one's country. Democrats like steny hoyer and metal. Dean argued for accountability. He'll we need accountability and truth that begins by knowledge in the president's dangerous lies and their deadly consequences. Removing trump is the beginning of restoring decency and democracy republicans. Like steve scalise cited unity. It will only serve to further divide nation that is calling out for healing can. Republicans joined the democrats in voting for impeachment including dan. Newhouse articles of impeachment are flawed. But i will not use process as an excuse. There is no excuse for president. Trump's actions so on this historic night we begin with. Abc's in decorah who was there at the capitol as this vote went down as good evening. Erin good evening. Yeah the house voting to impeach president trump on that single articles of impeachment incitement to insurrection. We knew democrats at the votes. They needed they control the house. Obviously but what was interesting is we saw ten republicans joining their effort. We started the day knowing that five. Republicans five house. Republicans would vote to impeach and five more came out during the day to vote. Yes that's a big departure from what we saw playing out last time around last year. No house republicans voted to impeach the president still though we should point out that a majority of house republicans did not vote to impeach. There were some that actually defended the president not very many but some think for the most part what we saw was republicans coming out to condemn the president condemned the violence at the capitol condemned the president's words and actions up but they did not feel impeachment was warranted. That's what we saw from. House minority leader kevin mccarthy for instance who finally recognize the joe biden won the election. He said president trump did bear responsibility for the capital siege. But he argued that he doesn't believe. The president should be removed from office that he should be impeached and removed from office. Some of the arguments we heard republicans and make as to why they didn't support impeachment was that they feel. It is too divisive that it's time for unity. That president trump only has one more week in office in at this whole effort is kind of use. Lewis and democrats countered that by arguing that president trump poses a threat to democracy for as long as he is in office. Abc's other terror. We know this now goes to the senate to decide whether to. Convict president trump. What do we know about when this trial is going to begin so Senate majority leader. Mitch mcconnell did say that he would not be reconvening the senate. The senate doesn't reconvene right now. Until january nineteenth and mitch mcconnell does not plan to start the the senate trial any earlier. That's interesting because that means the senate trial will be held likely once. Joe biden is after once. Joe biden is sworn in and when when there is a new senate as well remember with recent gains recent democratic gains in georgia. The senate. the new senate will now be it. A fifty fifty Balance of power. So that's going to tip the scales a little bit and in favor of the democrats. It's going to be interesting to watch what happens in the senate today. Mcconnell was asked how he feels about impeachment whether he had made his his mind up and he said he had not which is huge. That means that the senate majority leader. The republican senate majority leader has not ruled out possibly impeaching the president voting to convict him and remove him from office and we'll see if more republicans Follow suit mitch. Mcconnell will be anxiously waiting to see what comes out of him and if he gives anymore indication as to what he's thinking abc's tara who was at the capitol today when the house voted to thirty two to one ninety seven to impeach president trump. For the second time he broke his long silence that lasted all day in a video released. Just a short time ago from the white house. And so we turn to our white house correspondent karen travers karen aaron. Good evening this is now the president's new way of communicating his messages to the third video. He's released since the violence at the capital last week. He's not doing this. By bringing reporters to him in the oval office or coming out to the briefing room. These are taped things which means of course you can do some edits. It's very scripted. So in this new video tonight. The president offered his most forceful condemnation yet of the insurrection at the capital last week. Here's what he had to say. There is never a justification for violence. No excuses no exceptions. America is a nation of laws. Those who engaged in the attacks last week. We'll be brought to justice. Aaron republicans are starting to react to this statement. Lindsey graham tweeted it a few seconds ago that the president's statement hit the mark that he rejected violencia unequivocally condemned those who defiled the capital. And lindsey graham said. This speech helps move the country forward but we should note. This took a week for the president to be so explicit condemnation and i think also important is that in the longer video. It's about five minutes erin. President didn't acknowledge playing a role in inciting the crowd of his supporters. Last week he still is not taking responsibility. He is not shown remorse for his comments at his rally last week and we heard from the house. Republican leader today kevin mccarthy that the president bears responsibility for that attack on congress and not only has he not taken responsibility for his own conduct in his own words. That led to the insurrection. Karen he he seems say these were not his people. It's really notable how the president is trying to distance himself from the violent crowd. Who were wearing maga- hats. Who were waving trump flags as they stormed the capital those videos that are just shocking to see people with american flags and trump flags assaulting law enforcement officers so in the president's retelling of what happened last wednesday. It's almost like this was a fake maga- crowd that was causing this violence causing the destruction and doing those assaults on law enforcement officers. Here's what he had to say about that. No true true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence. No true supporter of mind could ever disrespect law enforcement or our great american flag no to supporter of mind could ever threaten or harass their fellow americans aaron but that crowd didn't just show up at the capital. This was not an organic gathering people with Trump flags. They were first at his rally about fifteen blocks away. They were absorbing his fiery message that he was telling them to fight like hell. And if you don't fight you lose the country and you know again. We've seen not just democrats and we saw a lot of them today and in the last week but republicans who say the president told those people to go up to the capital. He told them to fight and they went up there and did that. And he has to be held accountable. Abc's karen travers our white house correspondent..

"I broke the rules by taking pictures and videos inside the chamber. But i needed to sean. My team. what was ensuing in front of my eyes. Ken called several more times over the next fifteen minutes to check as situation. All over the complex escalated. I remember being frustrated when his calls would break up and cut off the videos. I was taking inside. I didn't understand the seriousness of the situation. The next section is titled tear gas in the rotunda that quickly changed. She continues one. An announcement was made that there was tear gas tear. Gas in the rotunda quote. Grabbed the gas masks under your seats and be ready to put them on. That's when the panic was really palpable. Everyone was shuffling yelling. No one knew where to go or what to do. There wasn't a gas mask under my seat in the gallery. Remember scanning the seats around me but couldn't locate the large black sack. i'd seen other members furiously. Grab and rip open. I yell to a to a nearby capital police officer nothing happened. I turned back toward the house floor. Watching his members started fitting their masks on their heads. I continued to text the group what i saw. I yelled again for a gas mask and the officer through one down amidst the texting and answering calls. I didn't start putting it. On until i saw everyone around me had filled their hoods with air and had their faces covered by contraption. I was the only person on the television side of the gallery since i was the assigned. Tv pooer and all of my colleagues working for print publications were nearby in their designated section. They started climbing over railings. To get to where i was and we all moved down to where the other members had already scurried under their chairs. We huddled as close as we could to one another. I kept thinking that even though we were all sheltering under our chairs we weren't under any real threat and then the glass shattered a pain in the glass of the intricate doors to the speakers. Lobby were smashed through by rioters as they tried to make it onto the house floor and attack the very center of democracy in america i caught glimpses of the standoff below as officers barricaded the door and drew their guns to defend the dozens of people inside. I started to hear the quiet whispering of prayer a congresswoman. I often see but didn't recognize was holding the hands of other members as she crouch down and was praying over the group. I started to think. About what i would use to defend our group if the mob were to smash through the third floor glass window on the third floor glass and enter the gallery the congresswoman next to me how to kane. That's what i'd use. I thought about how. I position myself to block as many people as possible as i was filming with my phone in one hand and texting furiously with the other. I noticed a representative close to me. Had fallen uncomfortably. I reached down to pull her closer. The members around me were almost all women and some of the braves people. I've ever seen no-one panicked. We held hands. We told each other. It was going to be okay. We were told. The hallway was almost clear and we would be evacuating as soon as we could. Where are we going. Where are they taking us. A member asked me repeatedly. She continued when we left the house chamber and walked onto the third floor. Landing we pass by dozens of people laying face down face first on the ground with their hands behind their backs. Lawmakers asked police if they were protesters they were. I'm interrupting here to say they weren't protesters. They were insurrectionists who were out for blood who were broke it breaking into the capital trying to get on the house floor to at best take hostages at worst murder. All right back to the Firsthand account she writes members in reporters still had their gas masks on and kept them. On throughout the evacuation members. Were calling their husbands wives sons daughters chiefs of staff and parents. I'm okay don't worry and mommy is safe turn off. the news. Filled the echoey stairwell as we made our way through the belly of the capital. We didn't know exactly where we were headed. And we didn't know if we would encounter more rioters along the way we were vigilant. Stay together. i kept scanning our group making sure all the members. I was huddled with behind the chairs earlier. Were still with us. No one could be left behind members. We're helping reporters reporters consoling members some were conducting interviews but everyone was helping each other as we fled the worst of what we would hopefully ever experienced in the building. One freshman member jokingly asked if every day in congress was like this and a more senior member equipped. You said you wanted a front row seat. I appreciated the in the moment. And i remembered texting our team about about it. So they knew the tone was lifting. I also realized that some of these people escaping alongside me had only been on the job for five days. What a welcome when we finally made it to our secure location members started filing through the large wooden doors of the largest hearing room. I know of when i tried to walk in. I was told members only by an officer guarding the entrance. Stunned the five other reporters with me couldn't believe it either. Where are we supposed to go. We begged representative abigail span burger. Virginia fought for us. When those doors slammed in our faces she told the guards. We needed refuge. We needed somewhere to hide. She told them that we were in the chamber to and we had been attacked at the same time. I was also asking span burger if she would please go on. Msnbc to talk about what just happened. She later did in recounted the events calmly and accurately span. Burger refused to go in the hearing room until she knew we were safe. It meant so much to me that she fought for us as the confrontation with the garden. Sued representative ruben. Guy go who's awesome offered to take down the hall to his office. I felt better once we were inside his office. He did not need to help us like that. Especially amid raging pandemic that has killed hundreds of thousands geigo entertained us with war stories raided the cafeteria and vending machines for us and made us feel calm admits the chaos that was still ensuing outside the door. We had few resources and had left our.

"Ability to identify people's ethnicity including leaguers white has previously said that none of it's technologies was designed to identify ethnic groups. My wang is a senior china researcher. At human rights watch. I have looked at a response from various companies and a generally can say what we don't do that or we did. That was regrettable. I think some of these are pretty technical arguments in that. The technology is south of may not be detecting people's raise at the moment of detection but that in the system is so our link to such detection in the database. So let's say you're walking in front of a camera. The camera does not say that. You're a white person on the basis of your facial features but it is identify you with your features going back to the back end to identify that person and into chinese government database somewhere is as you are a white person because the i d actually the police system identifies as such so. This is how i think. They're making some technical arguments about wide. Technology might not be at that instant of detection actually identifying race. But even the way you describe it kind of triangulating facial recognition with other data. I mean do you believe that's in use now. And is that essentially the same thing out. The impact and the result is the same and these companies are essentially doing tenneco gymnastics to wiggle themselves out of responsibilities because the ministry of public security chinese police running this baked surveillance system across the country the purpose of which is social control off the entire chinese. A large part of that is a racist idea that all leaguers are dangerous and tracking them and identifying untargeted him throughout the country now these companies supplying various levels of systems that enable that to take place they are using the marketing material describing these functions as a result they are contributing to these abuses so regardless of what they actually say as long as chinese minister of public security Using video surveillance in that way they are supplying the police in this system. They are complicit in these abuses of white surveillance. Technology is being used in the us. I actually don't know as much about their business in the us. I would say that there has been an expansion of power technologies global elite and the concern is not just just one company. The concern is a whole range of technologies being used increasingly provided by companies based in china and behold to the chinese government so talking about how it is somewhat a bit of amiss focused when the focus should really be. What are we going to do. Much of the world is going to be depend on chinese technologies. We don't really know what really goes on there and can't hold. These companies accountable wanted to go little further on that. As you see these surveillance technologies propagate what thoughts occur to you. I think that often people fear and fear allows for deepening of the surveillance. Wedneday should be addressed through other means. I think that both in the us across the world we seeing in increased collection of data that is unrestrained and we could very well lose democracies if we don't get on top the further development of technologies that can subvert democratic. "Think think putin Why his using this chemical weapon to do. Do both kill me. And you know terrify others. Investigative journalists collaborated with navalny to track down who targeted him. Many signs pointed to the fsb the russian federal security service. They say the fsba agents were following the volunteers in the months before the poisoning. Here's who still a reporter with belling cat and investigative news organization. No alternative explanation could justify. Explain the close tailing by chemical weapons experts and by doctors of navalny plus the peaks in communication. Just before and after these trips the tail nevada. Right now navalny remains in berlin five months after he was poisoned but he said he'd return to russia as soon as he was healthy so today navalny posted announcement yardage moved. Navales said he feels healthy enough to go home. Go fly back to moscow on sunday. And he's called on his supporters to greet him at the airport. There's already speculation though that he could be arrested immediately but nevada said that for him returning home to russia is a no brainer. And by the way the airline that navalny will be flying on is called by via the russian word for victory for the world. I'm daniel offman just ahead on the show the. Who's attempts to get inside. China you're listening to the world. I'm marco werman you're with the world. The pandemic began a year ago in wuhan china this week. A team of scientists with the world health organization finally hits the ground in china for the first major investigation into sars covy to the mission has been mired in politics but scientists hope to finally gain important new details about the disease and it spread. There was a lot of. Gordon has been following the. Who mission who is on this team. Alana and what is the goal. So marco this is an international team of virus hunters from around the world and that includes scientists from germany australia japan vietnam russia the us lots of folks Marion cooperman's virologist from the netherlands. She's part of the team and this is how she explained to chinese television this week. The goal of their mission. We have been asked to take a deep look at the question. Can we understand how this pandemic started. What was the origin of the endemic. There are of course ideas about how great the virus originally has come from most likely bat reservoirs but give me some how reconstruct how exactly that happened. So this mission is looking into the origins of the virus where exactly it came from and how it made its way to humans. This can seem like a direct question but it can be complicated because like what animals might have been that intermediary animal that allowed the virus to make that jump. So how will they be able to figure something like that out so to start. There's a lot of mapping and reconstructing of what happened that begins in wuhan with that first outbreak. It's detective work. It's like piecing together information. What we know about that. I cluster of people who are infected Where to go from there. But they're also using much more scientific techniques something like genomic sequencing of samples of animals. Shaun griffiths is an emeritus professor at the university of hong kong. She's not part of this team. But i talked to her because she knows a bit about disease investigations. She was a lead on an international investigation of sars back in two thousand and three in hong kong. Can you piece together. This chain this chain of events by looking at that level. Can you use science to give you the answer. And marco griffiths says fifteen years ago information just didn't flow as quickly between countries as it does today but at the same time. They were able to investigate that outbreak. Much sooner than this group. Going to china today right so a lot of the submission is happening a year in the pandemic. Can scientists really get to the bottom of this. Many researchers refer to this kind of work as searching for a in a haystack. And so there's a lot to be careful about in building up the hype but any new they learn can be super exciting if it adds to an understanding of how the virus spreads. I talked with dr daniel lucy about this. He's not with the team. He's a hunter at georgetown. He even went to china on his own last year to try to learn more but says he just couldn't get access so lucy has so many questions about the outbreak. For example at the market in wuhan and we'll closely following what this team can actually learn now. Bare minimum consider obtaining hopefully full factual information about humans in about the live animals is a litmus test this hopefully accurate truthful factual information. I mean the. Who michigan alana had been delayed from china for so long. Us leaders have accused china of covering up the effort. There's obviously a lot of political tension here so could all this impede the mission of the. Who like you said. There's a lot of politics intention in all of this china's really been pushing this question of did the corona virus even originate there. So what the. Who says it's trying to do is make this as objective as possible. Even the appearance. Marco of politics being present Of looking to blame anyone for the outbreak can get in the way of honest communication on the ground. Mike ryan wwj's emergency operations director. He got really impassioned about this. This week lit this mission and let other missions about the science. Not about the politics. We are looking for the answers here. That may save us some future so more on all that to come. The world's gordon thank you. Thanks mike huawei is a leading chinese tech company. One of its specialties. Is surveillance technology and one group of people that the chinese government closely monitors is weaker. Some muslim minority in western china. Now come to light that a hallway patent for a video surveillance system mentions it's facial. Recognition.

"I think it was Stephen Because by the time I started writing a new 65 and frankly will my hormones have gone. I couldn't remember being in love. I mean, I got some pictures but all the all the feelings are different when you're older and not in that for most of my characters dead. In time around either someone their partner has died or they're divorced and all of us carry back in touch with us. So when you meet someone and you're attracted off in this senior age group, it's no different from when you're younger and that you're still longing for tenderness and you've got a lot of love to give but sweet romance, you call it. Cozy romantic not code cozy meaning like you can sit by the fire and mediate sort of thing. Yeah. That's that's a term. I've heard more often, but I think I could be wrong. I'm sure people correct me but I think they basically are about the same thing. Okay, I guess. What I'm aiming for is what I like to read. I did not like to read stuff with a lot of sex and violence in it. So a sweet romance does not have took some violence. It has warmth and love and attraction and tenderness your families and animals and the English Countryside and fun and laughter and stuff that I love but it doesn't have the passion. It has more. I don't I don't know if you know the Books of Thomas Hardy's English writer. One of them is far from the Madding Crowd and there's a character called Gabriel Oak and he's talking to his love and he says and at home when we are by the fire whenever you. There I shall be and whenever I look up there will be you too. And there's more companionship of Love less passion more compact. Yes, yes, and we we talked about this a little bit..

"And then one day injure Mussa zone on single cell. I get so maiden and Whatever I get this guy? He moves to another cell across from me on the first tier and then One day SAUGUS lockdown. I'll turn in the yard on what's going on the Victor Edgy Miss. I told you put a pin in that dues name come back to Victor Ag when he drives up to the prison and he was to south down for me. I remember he was one of the few is one of the few times I actually saw or heard a guy get raped these african-american American guys from Washington. DC make six or seven just put running there and before he can say anything. They're just on top of them and it's just a term up sat- SAT- hat set terrible and everyone knew he was in trouble because he because he's a security risk because he escaped he has to stay in the six maximum. Security occur penitentiaries around the country. He can only be in those prisons so he could tell them. Hey you can't keep me on. They're like okay. What's another prison now your snitch? And you'll get like you can't you. He stuck stuck like chuck the only way. A guy like victory edgy. He can get out of this. Situation is if he witnesses some serious crime and then he says I'll turn state witness for the serious crime. So my accelerates murdered the guy who can rafter angel. I'm the yard what's going on. They locked down the unit. They bring us all in from the yard. They bring all the guys in from the for who had all been working that day. We're all the gymnasium and then we're all in the In the auditorium. And then we all gotta eat lunch. Where lunch I get pulled out of there and they arrest me on the first guy arrested? They found some clothes some blood on their in my thing which ended that being nothing but it ended up being a cut in order but a founder. Let's pull them up so that would have been cleared of that pretty quickly. Look me when they found the blood had nothing to do with anything but Victor Ag sees me get arrested. Victor Agency says I saw Joe nearby near that sow and he gets escorted out of the prison that day. And he's gone he doesn't have to get raped again and now I'm locked in this thing and then for the rest of the day I hear it. I'm in solitary confinement for the rest of the day. They're pulling one Mexican out together and every Mexican gets pulled up we none of us had anything to do with it but all of them were owed money for drugs so before we get to use that opportunity you find it all the time. Something like that goes on. You could say I think I think shorty had something to do with it and you'll short one hundred bucks. Guess what you're not gonNA air out the patient or hundred bucks and it all wanted a cost to too short he has. I think Tony from from Williams. I think he had something to do. and You owe tony like two hundred bucks. That's how you get guys off the the line and these he'll just pull them up and take them out two years later the guy who actually had done the killing and stayed out in the population general population He just got himself troubled. Talk too much and people told him so That's how that happened for. That's how I got there because somebody said that they saw me and got me in trouble title and so how is it different being in solitary then being in general population. Solitaire is There actually there's two things about your I was taking I and to the shoe was a special housing unit. Twenty three hours a day on your cell You get three five days a week Monday to Friday. You get an hour recreation an entire week you get Three showers okay. So that's the shoe but they have double sales in the shoe sometimes so solitary when you're actually in a cell by yourself alone and so I am always clear on this and I think I need to be clear with people on this one. I wasn't in solitary the entire two years. I was in a cell with another guy. I think I think I don't know four or five months of that. I got on my hand. Gaza one point and stabbed a guy in solitary confinement. And so let's back up. See you got out of your handcuffs and you stab. Somebody sounds sounds sounds more than it is. Yeah no I didn't like a guy he didn't like like me. We're we're talking shit to each other. And so I was on their oppression when we were like okay. Let's meet in the REC yard. So I had a summit. We had a summit and what they do the guard come in. They would open all this the food trap doors and all the south of all the guys who were going to come out to wreck he and I. WE'RE GONNA go down there and then we're going to have it out well. They opened up the food traps on all the doors. Guys who are going to go out to wreck trek you stand there with your hand behind your back. A guard comes any handcuffs. You through this little slot. He handcuffs handcuffs. You he opens. Your door has opened south. Twelve door opens you. Step out and you go wait Kurds of front of the tier and there's guards moving out there doing this and then they closed here and they go to the next cell they don't nobody's walking you over there. So there's there's guys just moving around the cell we're all coffee eight hundred back. And so I saw him get out of his cell walk over to another her cell with his hands on his back and that door was open and I saw guy slide a knife into his back his hand so I knew he was GonNa stab me. Wow the difference between me and him as I did the same. Move to a friend of mine. A friend of mine didn't just put a knife in my hand he on handcuffs. So this guy's walking overall cool hiding the knife under you know in his clothing as he's walking back hands behind his back and he's thinking we're GonNa get unhandcuffed and then he's GonNa make a move on me. I don't wait for that. I now have a weapon. Can I have no handcuffs on me. And so I go over them where he staying things. Oklahoma walking up to him I kick them in the boss. He bends over and boom boom. I I just real quick.

"In retrospect when I gave it some extra thought and consideration as started thinking. Yeah that's how how desperate. Joe Was to maintain the Yuppie lifestyle. This is Danny Shah again. The easiest way and shortcut for him to get the money that he needs to sustain that lifestyle would have been robbing banks. So I wasn't really shocked that so in Paul told me that He told me that Joe wanted to reach out to me. Why do you think he got back in touch with you? I think he was. He was lonely in prison. Not Not a Lotta people came up. Because of course after got arrested and convicted. All of his Yuppie friends had deserted him and he was just Josie social person. So the more people he can get to come up and visit him better at his eight year sentence. We'll go so he just reached out because he wanted a friend. Yep I believe so because yeah he never really asked for anything except For food out of the vending machine visitor's center when we used to go visit all right. Come up there and visit them and so of course the call comes in collect and would you accept a call from federal penitentiary. I'm like okay. A and he's like hi. How are you doing here? You're getting a divorce and I said I hear you're in prison. Search like he usually does and so it was kind of like all that time that we missed I went straight back to the neighborhood kids and who we were as friends. I was going through my divorce and he was in prison. Then and so it was kind of like A friendship that bad. I think we both needed at the time. mm-hmm so do you remember when you went to visit him the first time Yes I went up there and I think when I went in there there are Joe. Had a brief me before to bring lots of quarters And change for the vending machines. Because that was the highlight of his whole day was to be able to buy junk food Out of the vending machines because he was on a standard bland prison diet and there was no find that so I brought a whole mess quarters and all that and the first visit like all the other visits was was filled with a lot of laughter. A lot of Good Times a lot of reminiscent of pastimes right. When he sat down it was kind of like a conversation of kids in high school? Going back to that time. And do you remember what you guys talked about on that first. visit in my Lord What's new what's new? What have you been doing what? What is this like basically i? I wanted to find out from the time that he laughed highschool or the time he moved out of our neighborhood to at the time now so he had a lot of stories to tell in what was going on with his life and and so it was a lot of listening and understanding for those visits. Like what was your impression of him when you were Kinda Manzi well. When when he was growing up he was very skinny kid? You know he had like little toothpick legs and he was very skinny. So when I come and see this guy I he's a man he's completely built out he's been lifting weights and he's just a bigger guy but I knew him as the boy and I knew what was inside of him of the person that he that I knew him as it was a criminal. You tell me about the story about the woman who actually urinated on on herself and I'm like that's that's just unbelievable and and she probably will never be able to be in certain types of jobs that require that that that's the part I didn't like and how it affected other people and I could tell by the way walked and all the rest of that that He was becoming institutionalized As what is the verb the police officers like using a lot fritters. I mean basically it means that You have to develop A whole different persona physical presence And basically wherever you walk you throw a three hundred sixty degree field of awareness around you because you never know when you're going to be attacked from behind and all the rest of that you walk with a gate of Predator for all intents and purposes to go and dissuade any potential predators deters from attacking you..

"So back in the old neighborhood back when Joe Paul their data I'm Brenda we're all living in Burbank. The bank there was this little crew that Joe and Paul used to hang out with. We've heard from Danny Shaw. One of Joe's good friends from Burbank. Times he's been on a few times in the podcast. There was also Lisa Lisa Perez so when joe laughed I wanNA say he left. Roughly about seventy seven Lisa still lives in Burbank. Not Too far from where they all used to hang out together just one day the family moved and I did not know. Oh why they were moving where they were moving to and never heard from him after that fast forward ten years to just about toward the end of Joe's bank robbery days I met Joe by accident at the Glendale Galleria. My brother and I were shopping during Christmas. I hadn't seen him. Since the time he left. Alhambra and I said Hi. How are you hi? How are you and you're trying to make like a huge conversation? Within a small period of time and unbeknownst to me his girlfriend was in the store also so his girlfriend Joe's Joe's girlfriend at the time so she sees joe talking to a girl and yeah and so she puts her arm around him and he was like Oh my gosh. This is my childhood friend that I haven't seen forever and we were introduced to each other and We were kind of housing's going for you. How's things going for you? unbeknownst to me he was already starting his crime spree. 'cause you know he didn't share any of that with me at the time time and I didn't hear from him after we met. We didn't exchange phone numbers. We didn't do anything them a few months later I was home and my mom mom called me and said Kay Paul's here and I'm like oh I said well I'll come over and say hi to him. And that's when Paul told me that as brother was in prison and that he had been convicted live robbing banks and in the back of my mind. I said I'm not surprised..

"Yeah we become Rhode. Dogs turns out. He knows a lot of people. His best friend in the prison is a member of the Mexican mafia an old guy and and he walked yard together. Guys names tower so I get to hang out with them sometimes. Long Story Short. There's another Mexican off your soul. Who hangs out with our his? Name's Doug would based on all I don't know if you remember the dagger dumpsters and old old comics character from the forties and fifties and Dagworth does Mexican killer and he had this big mustache that looked like Emiliano Zapata Moustache Right. So he's carrying it off like that and he and I become friends so people were like. Oh Oh shit. This new guy is hanging with DAG would and he angel have with our like. I am now part of this I just visually you have to take me seriously. Even Predator for. I don't know anybody but in the feds different you know. It's not like it wasn't the state I got entree. I'm at tables with guys. Who Got John Gotti? The Italian mobsters best friends from when they were ten years. Old Boy parodies. I'm like I know these people angels love. Oh by all his mobsters so like and I'm I'm a nice guy. He's all right with us in. Just get along okay. That sounds very lucky. I mean did you have to do anything to prove yourself to these guys like Rosier relationship with Angel. Like Angel was a knucklehead. He was a guy who is constantly drunk driving a prison meaning name he would constantly offend people constantly and so he come in and say it might get your knife man. I gotta go hand on this thing over here and he would go. Some guy sound goes whatever I'd have to stand outside the cell and if it was going to have somebody was going to happen. The other guy thought it was just him and angel. He didn't realize I was standing out. It'd be me an angel against right. So he would go in their nature was good at making those guys just pee on themselves in the and the vernacular guys as we. Just no no no no. I don't WanNa problem when you talk. I don't want an error. He had this tactic where he would walk into a south row. Knife on the bed and say you don't like me. I don't like you pick hit up last one standing wins and nobody would ever pick up that knife because they knew that he already. He had made peace with his maker. That guy did not have he was not dialed up to that point. No matter how tough he was he wasn't gonNA pick a knife. I was always there when Asia would do that kind of move a couple of times Went and extorted from guys and I went in this hour although and we just so he knew that I was his righteous road. Dog like that's where we were. He backed by play a couple of times. I need I back display every time. And he was emmy. Here's a drunk driving fooling. He was always getting in trouble. And people are telling me do are you as row has gotta get a job as a yeah. I don't use my road dog. That's my Roy. Dot.

Ag a reason I know is because he got arrested while we were doing time. He had escaped from the Metropolitan Detention Center. was I open and read about it like six guys escape. He's the only one got away and he gets arrested because because a prostitute turned him in and said he was trying to Raipur so when he comes back to jail now he's not just a bank robber he's a rapist and everyone's like Oh. Now you're in trouble because you get labelled a rapist on the street now. People can hottest one of the stupid things like you can get raped in prison. Isn't because you're a rapper. And he's sitting next to me now driving up to Lompoc but when we drive up and we A veteran I ended up in the same unit. They give you an reception. They give you your blankets in your pillow and your clothes and your towels and go find your unit. Our Unit was K- unit. Step out into the main line and this is like this. The main corridor corredor that all the units are connected to this giant artery. Is I don't know twenty feet wide. It looks like you park. Mark to eighteen. Wheelers is tall high and wide. Maybe three eight hundred law big corridor any and you turn right. And that's all I leave reception going in this corridor and it's a bunch of guys walking around the guard sister. You've got this union. You Got Yourself over here. I go to the the cell and and get the top bunk in a cell and there's a red handkerchief over the light in the south like a brothel. Alright guy and I made I carried myself and conducted myself not like shot caller at all but like I've done time in the state I guys could see his kind of serious because there's quiet super quiet mine Mav business finding what's the what and then there was this. One Guy was an older African african-american due to play Cheswick. Sometimes I remember his name. He had been a long and he said I'm GonNa tell you some things to survive LOMPOC. "Western sound. This is the score season one. The bank robber diaries. I'm Ben Adere and this is episode eleven the Second Time In. Okay Joe I have a question An episode nine. We ahead talked about how you were working at your job at the restaurant and you had other employees working on your time cards and how that gave you kind of an alibi for a a lot of the Times that you would go robbing but then you also said how you took your friend to go rob for you. Your friend who turns out looks a lot like you and he got ideas you but it turns out when they went to check the cameras. Use Four inches shorter and that made the FBI. I think that you have this double out there and ED. I assume it through the eyewitness identification under suspicion. Yeah I mean it was actually when I called quarter Scott. I'd Explain Rain To my dad and quarters. I ended up been in that bank. I swore moments grave. I had not been in the bank so in courts went to especially GIA quarters that is went to go look at the film he called. I called him and he says okay. Joan tell you something right now and you need to pay attention. These women were robbed robbed and wins in a couple of hours. They both falsely identified. You and they had just been robbed the women. We've been going going to you. Rub Thirteen months ago. Ten months ago nine months ago eight months ago that makes all of those suspect to because of these these two women who had just been rob. You could be so wrong right now. All of those a suspect. He's basically saying this. Is your argument with your lawyer. You need to tell them. Oh you got a double. But wouldn't they go to your manager at the restaurant and say did he released. I need time cards. They didn't go to my managers why they did that is on them. I have have no clue except to say if they had gone to her. I can't say what she would have said but I know one thing they would have gone her and say. Is this your signature there and she would have been able to say legally yes. That's my signature. And that's all they're gonNA want. They're not going to say. Hey but could he have had clemente in the back worked for him that day and like have you like they're not gonna go to. They just needed verifone. One thing. This is a piece of evidence. Is that your signature. She would have said Yeah. Nafta had pushed her further. She would've been either. Had to make a choice. Joe Didn't work that day. I remember for sure that it was lamented. Who worked on his time card and so now the company is liable for its own crimes? It opened his an. I don't know that she would have done that. And there's no way they have proven that clemente work that day because she signed it right there there that's it and that's all she needs to say so suddenly you're not going to jail for sixteen or even thirty six. I'm going for three for the three. So they say listen we got you on these three.
