Pat Boone Has Met Everyone, From Elvis to the Queen

"I'm talking to pat Boone. Yes, the patent. I could get any guy named pat Boone, but no, we took the trouble to track down the real pat Boone. Who has boy pat? You've met anyone I can think of. You have stories with The Beatles. You did business with The Beatles in the 60s. I did business with The Beatles. You met the queen twice. Yes, yes, twice, and the second time was very embarrassing. I think I did I tell you about this. You did and how many times did you walk on the moon? Be honest. Well, only once in my dreams. And it was scary, so I didn't it was a nightmare. You sung about the moon. You've met many astronauts. I mean, look, you've just met about everybody. I mean, everybody that was on the dais at the Dean Martin rose, the greatest program of all time. You've met most of those people. Yeah, and they've all made jokes about me too, and not on the roast. But just in their shows. And then they're well, because you became. You became that guy, you know, that we wanted to make fun of something wholesome we'd make fun of pat Boone. And what's the line where Dean Martin or somebody says that I shook papon's hand in my whole my whole right side sobered up? Big laugh because the audiences knew what he was talking about. Eric from the very beginning of my career where Elvis was, you know, my opening act and we've talked about that because I already had 3 million selling hits before we met and he only had one record and it was a sock hop in Cleveland. He was a punk. He was a punk, you took him out of the gutter. Is that what you're saying? No. But it was all like that. But he was considered the rebel.

The Popularity of Donald Trump Is About to Skyrocket

"Democrats are not actually playing chess. This is a bad game of checkers, and they're not thinking this through. I say this only in that I know what their motivation is. They want to make sure that he never, ever, ever, ever, gets near the Oval Office again. But by doing this, they actually are going to have a boomerang effect where they make catapult the guy into the Oval Office. I mean, think about this. Who the heck? Are they going to run from the Democrat party? I'm sorry, but Joe Biden has really proven. He's lack of worst as a president between the inflation. You heard me just talking about eggs 6% inflation. We got a banking crisis underway. Who the heck knows what the fed's going to do, by the way, the CEO of key city capital is coming up Thai Lasseter. He's going to talk to us about what to expect from the fed. There are meeting today and tomorrow. We have so many problems. The situation in Ukraine. The situation with China, meanwhile, congressional investigations are turning up allegations that his family, Biden's family was benefiting tremendously from China. So if there's financial kickbacks going on, those are things that do, in fact, need to be investigated. And this is all baggage that Joe Biden carries with him. I do not think that he is electable. Noble Gold CEO Collin Plume Discusses the Banking Crisis

"Plume from mobile gold. Just tell us about your company, what you're doing. And I just want to encourage our audience. I never tell you what to do with your money, but I can tell you what I'm doing with mine. I'm buying stuff I can touch. Yeah, well, and especially this week, I think that we've seen over the years when people would wire money out of a bank. And sometimes a banks would try to discourage them. They would tell the client as they walked in. They would tell, you know, are you sure? Yeah. Do you really want to do this? But I've had a lot of funny calls from clients where they said, this is the first week that they bought gold from us, that even the bank that they want to discourage them. It's a sending us money. And they know who we are, that makes obviously no who we are. Of course. So it's been we've had a massive influx of people that just want to get out of the banks. Even people that aren't with SVB or stupid valley bank or whatever you want to call it. Even people that are with that bank. Or Credit Suisse, man. Yeah, I mean, credit Swiss is almost two times the size of or two and a half size the size of Silicon Valley. Yeah, it's 1.5 trillion in assets. So that would be a massive collapse. That would change things pretty dramatically in the system. But overall, the banking crisis has been something that I've talked about for a long time. Yeah, you have. And it comes down to banks today. They obviously need to make a return. And a lot of the banks today are struggling to find a decent return, especially ones about treasuries a year ago. But this collapse, I think, made no sense in that when they bought those treasures a year ago, it didn't make any sense that they didn't take the lick back last year, sell some of it. Why would they sell 60% of what they had today? It really was the perfect storm for that bank. And there's 6 or 7 other banks that are in a similar position. And we'll see what happens over the next few weeks. Yeah, and

Could Trump Be Worse the Second Time Around?

"It's not, it's a little more nuanced than that, but I do think you don't credit evangelicals generally with being smart about their vote. My whole view of the evangelical affair with Trump is that the relentless ascendancy of secularism drove evangelicals into his arm and that that election was really about the Supreme Court. And that evangelicals were quite smart to go with Trump after he published his list, and they ended up with justice, Gorsuch justice, Kavanaugh, and justice Amy Coney Barrett, and that was a good deal for evangelicals concerned about freedom of worship. Response I understand all that, I, you know, my perspective was at the time and remains that he was that Trump was pretty clear about his disregard for the constitution for history for sort of the architecture of our democracy. He made that pretty clear in his comments in different ways. And I think he proved that his words meant something when it came to January 6th. So I think, you know, sure, you got a Supreme Court that you like, and we came to a constitutional crisis where we came closer than I and many others would have liked to. Okay, tangent. Tangent, John. If Mike Pence had done the wrong thing and put aside the ballots, what do you think would have happened? It wasn't a constitutional crisis. It was a riot, and it was dangerous, and I hope they're all prosecuted who broke in, but I've had this argument with Liz Cheney. What do you think would happen if Mike Pence had bought it? Well, we don't know what would have happened. I think there's another scenario where they delay it where lawmakers are killed, where they can't get enough lawmakers to actually certify the election. And I think there was talk, I think, by general milley, of concerns about Trump, you know, declaring martial law or some excuse to take military control of the country. We don't have evidence that I think John Roberts would have gotten the court together and they would have declared count the votes in about 24 hours. Maybe not that long. And they would add a Nixon versus the United States 9 zero vote and we weren't close to a constitutional crisis. In fact, my biggest argument with you about your book is you don't actually have a lot of faith that evangelicals believe in the constitution and that there are concerns about the secularization of the society are overstated when in fact I spend a lot of time talking to the alliance defending freedom, they're out there every day combating anti Christian bigotry. I mean, it's real. I've been reporting on this since 1992. It's a constant, secularization, advance that has triggered a lot of the response that you deal with, although covenant life church is different. That's why I'm trying to, that's a very different part of the general evangelical world, isn't it? You know, in some respects, coming to life was not very political. It wasn't involved with things like alliance defending freedom. And you know, I have no problem with people doing those things in through the system that we have. But I think going back to the point about January 6th, were we at the point of a coup, we don't know the point my point is we were way too close for my comfort level and we're now at a point where the same guy is potentially going to be the Republican nominee again. And if he brought us that close last time, my concern is where do we go from here if he's president again?

Trish and KeyCity Capital's Tie Lasseter Discuss the Economy

"Moving at a very, very rapid pace right now. But bottom line, the feds are saying, okay, you know what? We're going to guarantee deposits at any of these banks by opening this window, do you think that's the right move? Well, I think we absolutely needed it. The fed absolutely had to back in and ensure otherwise you're going to see a much larger problem with small business across the United States. We've got maximum $250,000 that the fed's going to ensure. I was talking to another business owner in Dallas where I am yesterday. And I mean, there are small business $5 million a year in revenue. So they're not going to, they're not going to lay that out across ten different banks and the deposits that they have in order to fit within the shared mandate. And it's too much red tape. Exactly. So they did what they had to do. But now everybody still freaking out. Even though the fed says, don't worry, you know, we're going to be here. We'll loan them whatever money. This fear factor, right? This is what's so dangerous in markets because once the fear factor starts, there are worries about contagion, are you concerned that we could see multiple bank failures in 2023? No doubt that there's going to be bigger problems. I don't know that we'll see multiple bank failures, but we're going to definitely see faculties across a number of regional banks. There's a lot of consumer spending going on. Great jobs market and all of a sudden you start to see the effects of rising interest rates and the difficulty to get and obtain cash and money and yet we're still spending. We would have increased interest rates all at one time or maybe over a two time period to get to a point that would affect inflation. It would have been much better than seeing what the lingering effects of a slow increase in an interest rate. Yeah, you and I are on the same page on that one. I mean,

"Today, Hassan Sheik Muhammad was inaugurated as president of Somalia. Ten years after he first entered the presidential palace, this makes him the first president to hold the office twice since Somalia became independent in 1960. But while mister Muhammad has broken new political ground, his country faces many of the same challenges it did when he first took office. The threat of widespread famine vast swaths of territory held by jihadists. And much like in 2012, terror attacks are routine. So I went to Somalia just a few days after the election. And to get to Mogadishu's always rather complicated. Tom Gardner is The Economist Horn of Africa correspondent. You arrive at the airport and basically all the international organizations, businesses are in the green zone which surrounds the airport. And this is basically a fortified mini city within a city, chequered by roadblocks, Ugandan soldiers everywhere who provide the kind of African Union security. And to leave it requires an enormous armed escort. So for me, just to journey a few hundred meters down the road outside of the airport zone required being accompanied by 7 soldiers in a Jeep and a mounted machine gun going through multiple checkpoints. The atmosphere along the road as I exited the airport was, I would say quiet, a very little street life. Tends to be honest, and then I arrived at what appears from the outside to be a military barracks. Again, multiple soldiers, milling around, and then I had to pass through multiple perimeters, essentially, until eventually reaching the heart of this hotel compound where inside I found the newly elected president of Somalia Hassan Sheik Muhammad. So tell me about him, tell me about the man himself, what was your impression of him? Well, he's an academic, he's a civil rights campaigner. He spent his entire life pretty much living in Somalia, even after the state collapsed in the 1990s. He's Ivanka, he's soft spoken, mild mannered, and seems very conciliatory as a person. But he's tough as well. He has to be. I mean, four days before his last inauguration back in 2012, he survived an assassination attempt. In fact, he survived multiple assassination attempts in the last ten years. This time around, he has so far been lucky enough to avoid anything like that, but the country is taking over is still a very dangerous place. So tell us about that. What kind of country is he taking over? He's taking over a country, which is more divided, more insecure and more isolated diplomatically than it was when he took power in 2012 and indeed when he left power and handed over to his successor in 2017 because since then, the country has slid backwards. The outgoing Somali president Muhammad abdullahi Muhammad better known as farmajo was a populist basically. I mean, he sidelined powerful regional leaders. He lashed out at critics, he packed his cronies into the federal security forces, and he also upset foreign allies too. He drew close to Qatar and turkey at the expense of other influential Gulf states, the United Arab Emirates in particular, and he picked fights with neighboring Kenya and Djibouti. Hassan Sheik Muhammad told me he had run for office again in order to calm the hostile atmosphere in Somalia. In Somalia, whether he is the president or whether he's a ordinary citizen, his living in a risk zone. This time around, I'm seeing an opportunity. And that I can put stronger foundations for this state building some money. I'm not claiming that I will leave some money. Like Denmark and Finland, but I'm going to leave Somalia much better than us I came to it. Things really came to a head last year when farmajo's attempt to stay in office by delaying elections threatened a return to full scale Civil War. So you've described an exceptionally fractious country. It sounds like do you feel that president Muhammad is in a position to heal those divisions? Will be difficult. I mean, whoever has run Somalia elaborate of clan loyalties typically undermine national unity. But he does come to power on the back of considerable goodwill, many Somalis have welcomed his return as the man to the fix the mess. And he's moved fast. I'd say to mend bridges with opponents, one of the first things he did actually after winning the election was to invite all of Somalia's regional leaders to a meal together. He then promised he would share power and complete a new federal constitution. A broad two he's making some friendly advances. He told me about his international diplomacy. And foreign leaders who have rushed to support the new man, America, in particular, is sending hundreds of troops back into Somalia to help the government fight a jihadist organization called Al shabab, which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda. And at one point, Al shabaab controlled wide swathes of territory. How much of a threat does it now pose today? So in Hassan Sheik's first term, the jihadists weren't knocked back and he told me about how his administration had liberated many towns during his time in power. But since then, he says it spread again across the country. We lost most of those districts that we liberated in 2012 to 2016. All these district is being taken back by Al shabaab, many of them, not it controls much the countryside. And it's claimed to have infiltrated state institutions in recent years in particular the security apparatus. In the places they control Al shabaab also runs courts, it provides basic goods and services. They're more entrenched now than they ever were. Revenue now they are collecting revenue, some estimates say they collect more revenue than the government itself. They are everywhere now. In the institutions and the port and the customs, so they are now establishing a kind of deep state within our estate and within the country. Because of the compromising of the security apparatus, a few places are safe. We just heard president Muhammad say that he liberated districts during his first term, what is his plan to deal with Al shabaab this time? Islamist with links to the Muslim Brotherhood. So I think that helps explain the stress he put on winning the ideological battle, waging a kind of multi front war as he put it to take the Islamic narrative back from Al shabab. But I think a last thing solution will probably require talks with Al shabab as well. And that means first, pushing them back, building a favorable military position to negotiate from. The last big offensive against Al shabaab was in 2019 that hasn't shaken says he will launch another, and then once he's really pushed them back deep into the countryside, theoretically talks could begin. I think in practice that could take years. So jihadism, as embodied by Al shabaab, that's probably the most well-known threat facing Somalia, but.

And yes i do it before all my on my herbert cuts. So that's really lead up to what had happened. "Love training zimrights. It's one of my top five favorite places in the world and it was. It was awesome. My body was starting to click. I was hitting workouts. That i've never hit before and just like so much better of a version of myself than i had been Earlier in the year. And i mean even. We are comparing workouts that i'd done in twenty eighteen which was a crazy awesome year my career. I was busting them. In the summer of twenty twenty one and looking and feeling dislike awesome unhappy in snappy. Strong but quick was it was cool. It was a big transformation. That i've done In four weeks but really on a daily basis. I love that phrase. it's a common not a period. I've never heard that i love that. Can i use that. I'll i'll use it your audit. I'll give you tm. I should probably i love that. So everything's going amazing. You are in peak condition. I imagine getting pretty excited. You're at practice and bring us back to the day that you heard that pop at so. It's sunday the eighteenth of july. We leave saturday to go to the games and we have Odd savers maybe four or five times a year that you're doing a workout that really matters and you know in sports psychology in the way that we talk about about sport you know that one day does not make a break you but you also know that there are days are more important than others and this is important day korean. I had eight hundred four hundred four hundred eight hundred three hundred two hundred and fast all fifteen hundred meter pace and faster the fast fifteen hundred meter pace for the aids in and very fast for the floors in the threes and twos I was excited. We drove down to key abana Which is about an hour dry from san marino's in switzerland. You cross the border into italy and you drop down to Just under a thousand feet elevation so when you go to cuba it's like the best day ever you get the car. You're drinking coffee. You've got your delights and you sing song while if you're in our group you sing songs all the way down and you just have a really good time and then you now that you have to track in here you're gonna crash so it was interesting leading into this workout. I was having a little bit of a sore heel on my right foot. So that's all it was really was really focused on. How how does my husband. He'll feel today. Feels pretty good. "So did that in twenty fifteen there were three. Other competitors I won the race. And i ended up lapping. A woman in the race A masters runner and since two thousand fifteen. No-one has entered the fifteen hundred jamaica at and that means that. I have not competed at the trials since two thousand fifteen so i was just waiting on bated breath to see if anybody would register for the trials this year in the fifteen hundred so that i could go and compete at trials You know it's. It's a blessing in a curse to not have to compete at your trials. It allows me to take on other Competitive opportunities are not speaking for trials. But you also don't get to race with the opportunity to come national champion so usually qualifications pretty anticlimactic for me however this year Another woman sign up. Fifteen hundred so I found out about three days before. The trial's maybe four days before the trials that i was expected to compete so i had to quickly change all my travel plans and get down at kingston and yeah. I ran the thirteen hundred against one. Other woman Her name is tara. And i was super excited that she signed up and that we got to race. Oh i won the race. So there's my top three and Nowadays there are vacation standards and world ranking descending order less i was a world ranked number thirty two. I believe Which was my My qualifications gangs things already. That was a really long answer. No no no. Oh please i love it. I love because otherwise. I would have had asked one hundred. Follow up so no. You're so it's interesting too because you are such a wonderful advocate. I know that we've talked about this with you on the show before but how much you do for girls and younger athletes especially in jamaica of wanting them to compete and train and get into running so i think it could be easy to look at the situation. You've been in and say like oh hey sweet. I know i'm gonna get to go. I know i'm number one. But i sensed and i mean you said that it was exciting. That another woman signed up. It wasn't like oh. Shoot someone here to challenge me. Yes so where do you fall on that with like. Would you like to just have one other person. You gotta raise kinda know you're gonna get the spot or award year dream be to have a massive full field of women showing up to compete to represent jamaica. I would love full field. I mean that's that is my hope for the future. It's slow going. You know especially with covert i the year before saugus yet twenty twenty eighteen. I can't you But before i was able to do sort of like a mini camp info Outreach session in in jamaica and i was really excited marketing that ball rolling and just making more connections encouraging more athletes But kobe really. You made everything come to a screeching halt and Kobe still charging hard in jamaica as it is now with with a lot of places But vaccine rates are slow. And i mean we're still experiencing curfews When i was there for the trials the curfew was eight. Pm for weeknights. Six pm on saturday. Two pm on sunday So it's really limited of of what what you can do. And i'm really hoping that wants the world gets back on Onto a relative level of normalcy. That i can Try again try to keep that ball rolling of getting more women Keeping more women above eight hundred.

"Americans understand double standards and when people in the right see and hear that sorta stuff they understand. They can't trust cnn. They can't trust the news. They get from it because they know their worldview isn't going to be honestly reflected. I mean cnn. Basically purged any pro-trump votes other than rick. Santorum who's not exactly the spokesman for anything supportive of the president the the republicans who were mostly the voices on cnn are uniformly aligned against the president cnn claims to be an objective news outlet. But it's not really anymore as someone who worked there. That's disappointing. I get a lot of friends that are have a lotta respect for the people who work there. But we've got an anchor at cnn. Say that people who support the president's policy support the clan and there's not a rebuke there's an incentive. There's an encouragement there. There's a desire to push that out an amplify to tell people. Hey you don't have to watch. Nbc msnbc come watch us. It's a ratings ploy the rates distrust and mistrust and news networks. If they want to help fix the country they've got to be mindful of that and do better themselves. I really found in the last number of years that the american media institutions are some of the least self reflective institutions in the world and there are some of the ones that actually need some deep self reflection if they wanna really help patch up whatever is left of a country that we have but none of them are interested in doing it because outrage gets more traffic and it's all a ratings ploy..

"Ability to identify people's ethnicity including leaguers white has previously said that none of it's technologies was designed to identify ethnic groups. My wang is a senior china researcher. At human rights watch. I have looked at a response from various companies and a generally can say what we don't do that or we did. That was regrettable. I think some of these are pretty technical arguments in that. The technology is south of may not be detecting people's raise at the moment of detection but that in the system is so our link to such detection in the database. So let's say you're walking in front of a camera. The camera does not say that. You're a white person on the basis of your facial features but it is identify you with your features going back to the back end to identify that person and into chinese government database somewhere is as you are a white person because the i d actually the police system identifies as such so. This is how i think. They're making some technical arguments about wide. Technology might not be at that instant of detection actually identifying race. But even the way you describe it kind of triangulating facial recognition with other data. I mean do you believe that's in use now. And is that essentially the same thing out. The impact and the result is the same and these companies are essentially doing tenneco gymnastics to wiggle themselves out of responsibilities because the ministry of public security chinese police running this baked surveillance system across the country the purpose of which is social control off the entire chinese. A large part of that is a racist idea that all leaguers are dangerous and tracking them and identifying untargeted him throughout the country now these companies supplying various levels of systems that enable that to take place they are using the marketing material describing these functions as a result they are contributing to these abuses so regardless of what they actually say as long as chinese minister of public security Using video surveillance in that way they are supplying the police in this system. They are complicit in these abuses of white surveillance. Technology is being used in the us. I actually don't know as much about their business in the us. I would say that there has been an expansion of power technologies global elite and the concern is not just just one company. The concern is a whole range of technologies being used increasingly provided by companies based in china and behold to the chinese government so talking about how it is somewhat a bit of amiss focused when the focus should really be. What are we going to do. Much of the world is going to be depend on chinese technologies. We don't really know what really goes on there and can't hold. These companies accountable wanted to go little further on that. As you see these surveillance technologies propagate what thoughts occur to you. I think that often people fear and fear allows for deepening of the surveillance. Wedneday should be addressed through other means. I think that both in the us across the world we seeing in increased collection of data that is unrestrained and we could very well lose democracies if we don't get on top the further development of technologies that can subvert democratic. "Think think putin Why his using this chemical weapon to do. Do both kill me. And you know terrify others. Investigative journalists collaborated with navalny to track down who targeted him. Many signs pointed to the fsb the russian federal security service. They say the fsba agents were following the volunteers in the months before the poisoning. Here's who still a reporter with belling cat and investigative news organization. No alternative explanation could justify. Explain the close tailing by chemical weapons experts and by doctors of navalny plus the peaks in communication. Just before and after these trips the tail nevada. Right now navalny remains in berlin five months after he was poisoned but he said he'd return to russia as soon as he was healthy so today navalny posted announcement yardage moved. Navales said he feels healthy enough to go home. Go fly back to moscow on sunday. And he's called on his supporters to greet him at the airport. There's already speculation though that he could be arrested immediately but nevada said that for him returning home to russia is a no brainer. And by the way the airline that navalny will be flying on is called by via the russian word for victory for the world. I'm daniel offman just ahead on the show the. Who's attempts to get inside. China you're listening to the world. I'm marco werman you're with the world. The pandemic began a year ago in wuhan china this week. A team of scientists with the world health organization finally hits the ground in china for the first major investigation into sars covy to the mission has been mired in politics but scientists hope to finally gain important new details about the disease and it spread. There was a lot of. Gordon has been following the. Who mission who is on this team. Alana and what is the goal. So marco this is an international team of virus hunters from around the world and that includes scientists from germany australia japan vietnam russia the us lots of folks Marion cooperman's virologist from the netherlands. She's part of the team and this is how she explained to chinese television this week. The goal of their mission. We have been asked to take a deep look at the question. Can we understand how this pandemic started. What was the origin of the endemic. There are of course ideas about how great the virus originally has come from most likely bat reservoirs but give me some how reconstruct how exactly that happened. So this mission is looking into the origins of the virus where exactly it came from and how it made its way to humans. This can seem like a direct question but it can be complicated because like what animals might have been that intermediary animal that allowed the virus to make that jump. So how will they be able to figure something like that out so to start. There's a lot of mapping and reconstructing of what happened that begins in wuhan with that first outbreak. It's detective work. It's like piecing together information. What we know about that. I cluster of people who are infected Where to go from there. But they're also using much more scientific techniques something like genomic sequencing of samples of animals. Shaun griffiths is an emeritus professor at the university of hong kong. She's not part of this team. But i talked to her because she knows a bit about disease investigations. She was a lead on an international investigation of sars back in two thousand and three in hong kong. Can you piece together. This chain this chain of events by looking at that level. Can you use science to give you the answer. And marco griffiths says fifteen years ago information just didn't flow as quickly between countries as it does today but at the same time. They were able to investigate that outbreak. Much sooner than this group. Going to china today right so a lot of the submission is happening a year in the pandemic. Can scientists really get to the bottom of this. Many researchers refer to this kind of work as searching for a in a haystack.
