"We're back with me so far so easy author mark or see it around why it failed and how it might succeed they end up where I wanted to start here is because I found this very interesting this framework that you've devised about how an autocratic regimes to get to a path to democracy can go reform or revolution and the U. site so South Korea is succeeding in that in the Philippines and those who are going into the future failing on that's all talk a little bit about that but just give people perspective I guess when the of the initial revolution came in seventy nine the standard of living in the Iran and South Korea was about equal this is nineteen eighty and by two thousand and nine when this screen movement started the standard of living in Iran was one third the level of South Korea so let's talk about your reformer revolution sort of paradigm when I started writing this fall I realize that neither of political sociologist nor political scientists have developed a theoretical model the perspective that would tell us about under what conditions for returning regimes could become democratic through political reform under what conditions of fourteen regimes have to go through a revolutionary struggles to become democratic so there was no model and stuff I divide that the countries of that was found in South Korea Indonesia here on the Philippines I've also started Nicaragua on each shift to some extent and developed by ten variables that examine under what conditions the country from the comp democratic through reform under what condition there has to be a revolution South Korea was a country that's economically became very successful overall or a similar in nineteen seventy nine nineteen eighty seven on the level of development South Korea actually industrialized very rapidly and develop economically and by in nineteen. eighty seven south Korean was actually a democratic country although the military won the elections a few years after that finally the ministry was pushed aside and through the pharmacy it was in the violent overthrow of the Gulf in Indonesia that did not happen Indonesian economic development was not as successful as South Korea they were still dependent on and income inequality was very extensive much more than South Korea and in nineteen eighty eight for the health of students on the poor are I'm sorry I'm in nineteen nineteen ninety eight the government of Indonesia president Suharto was finally over the phone after thirty five years. the question was that what we hear on could go and given the fact that Iran's economic development has been very very successful very failed example of economic development in the Middle East I mean and actually the whole world Iran's per capita GDP in nineteen seventy six. to about thirteen thousand. three hundred dollars two thousand five dollars by two thousand nine dollars per capita GDP had declined to about nine thousand four hundred thirty years of decline for these people so economic income inequality is the G. Nicole fissions shows by that time the Gini coefficient which measures inequality declined Elizabeth at the junior corporation is really doesn't show the real face of any quality in Iran what happens after the revolution. once the clerics power they were able to seize assets comically sources of the monarchy the monarch's family the royal family the entire upper echelon of the capitalist class many of whom fled the country some were executed many of them fled the country the clergy soon all of them and put into the foundations to support the poor the most as a fan but everybody need on is now quarter of the clergy is a wealthy category along with the revolutionary guard so unical Fishman doesn't show that inequality increased because that portion of the wealth that was owned by the wealthy people the royal family and the rest of the their associates more than one thousand families or all expropriated and do not go into the equation when they measure income inequality so that's the crux of the matter and it shows that the more he called distribution of income but also doesn't show any quality and Ralph. in the early nineteen nineties there was a survey in Iran that showed that seventy seven percent of the Iranians claimed intense anger about the distribution of wealth and income so based on that comparison far south Korean and then it just from the distribution of wealth and income and success or failure of economic development I'm planning on doing that here on the stones economic development resembles more like Indonesia rather than South Korea and failed economic development refused to support for the government to support for reform because people have lost everything reform is not going to solve their problems the whole system has changed fundamentally and the fundamental change in parts revealed itself. in the demands of the protesters during the Korean War. and why didn't the green movement ultimately succeed. excellent question. very complicated the problem with the green movement was that the first problem was that leaders of the green movement on former prime minister in the house and was having a claim he had won the elections. his his associates and colleagues they wanted to work through the system is more people give them on to overthrow the system at the beginning of the protest he called the Islamic Republic as a secret system instead of the number of times that me I'm not in favor of calling for the overthrow of the regime itself. was that last majority of those who were involved in the green room on the week after the moon and the stars they were calling for death to dictate so they were calling for independence freedom and Iran in the public as opposed to Islamic Republic and they were calling a lot of radical slogans they were shouting very radical slogans and one day I remember it was a quote you know the Jerusalem okay that now the speakers or shouting slogans and people are supposed to follow them so the loudspeakers has death to America and the protesters wore green movement participated in that Hey in favor of Jerusalem they weren't shouting death to America they said after Russia then the loudspeaker says Catherine Israel so this post and Beth Israel and this is the truth from the hot day and they were saying death to China because they view rush on China's close allies of the Islamic Republic and they do not problems with the United States or Israel and so I kept listening folders utopia force one after another they kept coming and. there was. almost nothing that you could hear after the fall now this because there's been no voice that says death to America or death to Israel this was very shocking so the extent of division between the people on the regime is. amazing shocking they have moved so far away from each other and so the first problem was that. the leaders of the movement and I want to go far the movement participants in the streets one on the golf much farther and being done with the Islamic Republic and there's so that was the first problem that they did not succeed. the second problem. was the fact that opposition isn't ready prepare themselves for the repression of what's coming and the repressions Islamic Republic has been very skillful as arresting people thousands of people arrested in the. as the green movement structure and they weren't prepared to hide them or protect from their members and their supporters in schools and but the other the bigger problem has to do with the fact that to overthrow the regime or government you need to have a very broad broad coalition yeah that's what I told him why Isola Khomeini kept making all the promises prior to the revolution making sure that every segment of the population would side with him and with participate in the revolutionary struggles to overthrow the shop. that broad coalition did not emerge and in the two thousand nine green will not. opposition fans to bring and the merchant class. that have played an important role in the revolutionary struggles. and but also the working class the individual merchants on individual workers participated in the revolution of the struggles but they did not participate that's classes from collectivities. that's why in part they were the crest on the final reason that that they failed was the fact that this movement was very large yeah I'm like three million people on June fifteenth two thousand nine content on city came out in protest if you take a look and compare the three million with the nineteen seventy nine revolution when population of course was a smaller in Tehran but it took about one year into Ron have a one million population coming and joining the process one million took about one year to join the.

"We're back with me so far CZ author mark or see it around why it failed and how it might succeed they end up where I wanted to start here is because I found this very interesting this framework that you devised about Howard autocratic regimes to get to a path to democracy can go reform or revolution and the U. site so South Korea is succeeding in that in the Philippines and US war torn Indonesia failing on that's all talk a little bit about that but just give people perspective I guess when the of the initial revolution came in seventy nine the standard of living in Iran and South Korea was about equal this is nineteen eighty and by two thousand and nine when the screen movement started the standard of living in Iran was one third the level of South Korea so let's talk about your reformer revolution the sort of paradigm when I started writing this fall I realize that neither of political sociologist nor political scientists have developed a theoretical model the perspective that would tell us about under what conditions for returning regimes could become democratic for political reform under what conditions of fourteen regions have to go through a revolutionary struggles to become democratic so there was no model and stuff I divide that the countries of that was standing South Korea Indonesia here on the Philippines I've also started Nicaragua on each shift to some extent and developed by ten variables that examine under what conditions the country from the comp through reform under what condition there has to be a revolution South Korea was a country that economic and very successful overall or a similar in nineteen seventy nine nineteen eighty seven a level of development South Korea actually industrialized very rapidly and develop economically and by in nineteen eighty seven south Korean was actually a Democrat. country although the military won the elections a few years after that and finally the ministry was pushed aside and through the pharmacy it was in the violent overthrow of the Gulf in Indonesia that did not happen Indonesian economic development was not as successful as South Korea they were still dependent on and income inequality was very extensive much more than South Korea in nineteen eighty eight for the health of students on the poor I'm sorry I'm in nineteen nineteen ninety eight the government of Indonesia president Suharto was finally over the phone after thirty five years. the question was that what three Ron could go and given the fact that Iran's economic development has been very very successful very failed example by two thousand nine dollars per capita GDP had declined to about nine thousand four hundred so that's thirty years decline for these people so economic income inequality is the genie crawfish and shows that by that time the Gini coefficient which measures inequality declined Elizabeth at the junior corporation is really doesn't show the real face of any qualifying it on what happened after the "They either tried to hide that although it was caught on tape or they just flat out deny it or they scratch their head and go be we've got to come up with another experiment. Yeah. You do. Yeah. You do. And when that experiment also shows that the earth is a an Oblate spheroid, not a flat thing. I don't know what site. Let me let me add one thing that the vaccination thing matters. You know, if you are a delaying making this decision or you're making a bad decisions, you know, those those things have ripple effects throughout society, and you can affect other people you can affect children, and and others that are vulnerable. And so, you know, there are some questions that matter a lot, you know, the God question matters, if the universe has a God, it's a very different thing than if a universe that doesn't have a God. Right. And so it's the questions important. I think and all of the things that follow from that. And so so they're they're important questions. And as it's worth spending, the time to try to understand these important questions and form an opinion and try to come up to come up with a reasonable solution to them. And once you have an opinion try to show that it's not correct. Take the opposite dig and do do what you're so. That's the hardest thing. Learn to do it is it does not become so attached to own opinion because it's yours. Yeah. I have I have an article in the in the newsletter about that very thing confirmation bias in. If you wanna look at the newsletter. Last month on my eighth debates patriot project I posted video called MIT skeptical because I did debate on the resurrection in basically, the constant attack. I get in this happens mostly in resurrection. Debates is that my standards of evidence are just too high. And I need to have a softer brain. I had another resurrection debate on Thursday evening, and this acusations came up again. Fortunately for me during this debate. There was a moment where I demonstrated thanks to the help of the person. I was debating conclusively that the standards of evidence that I was advocating were vastly superior to the standards of evidence that he was advocating because he would have been conned. And so tomorrow, I'm going to record that as a separate example there to talk about this notion of good standards of evidence. But we're not going to go through that here. We got more callers before we do that absolute it looks like we're behind on the money. We are so talk than raised two thousand five dollars. I think maybe that five dollars came from me. So get over that. That's a problem. We are behind by one thousand one hundred and thirty so we've raised eight hundred seventy two dollars.

"We could read here the top one hundred and twenty men on the black disciples pyramid. That's the the hierarchy of the gang. Right. We're paid very well. But the pyramid. They sat atop was gigantic. So if you use this franchise from guy named JT they mentioned earlier in the article the franchise had three officers and fifty foot soldiers there were about five thousand three hundred people working for those one hundred twenty bosses at the top of the pyramid. And then there were twenty thousand unpaid rank and file members most of them who were just. Vying to become a foot soldier, and how well did a foot soldier dream job pay when just foot soldier job that these twenty thousand people want right three dollars and thirty cents an hour. Let you don't have to pay taxes. This is written in two thousand five this is I believe that's when they were out actually speaking with these people. Yeah. So two thousand five dollars so clearly not enough for regular international travel. Where does this stuff actually come from? How does cocaine inter- the US how does heroin enter the US and on and on with these other drugs, especially when Uncle Sam a stencil spends billions and billions of dollars just trying to stop the drug trade. How does it gave? One person thought he found the answer. And he was an investigative journalist named Gary Webb. Gary Webb was born on August thirty first nineteen fifty-five in corona California. And he wanted to be a writer from a very early age for the student newspaper at his college, Indianapolis, he ended up getting married to him named Susan bell. And they went on to have three kids together. And he I started getting into investigative reporting. When a piece appeared in the Kentucky post, nineteen eighty called the coal connection. It was a massive series a seventeen part series that he collapsed on with a guy named Thomas Sheffi that looked at Benue. I know more about this the conspiracy surrounding coal company. So he was already kind of early on in into whistle blowing and kind of like this sort of deep dive truth telling trend expose the ills of society. Right. Right. Similar to the that wonderful journalist we interviewed a while back more, Paris Kia. I believe it's name was yet who did some fantastic work on the US government's arrangements with spies in the area of civil rights. This guy was a small town reporter who was breaking big stories. And in this big deal is specifically about the assassination or the murder of a president of this coal company in how this guy perhaps had some or he did have ties to organized crime. That's that's no small thing. You don't write about that? And then knock worry about writing about that. And and as our from Marcus tablist earlier, the the thing about being a an investigative journalist that's worth their salt is that so much of the actual work is just verifying and triple checking every single syllable of every single sentence that is fit to print, and you have to do it before it goes out to the masses. It turned out. The Gary Webb seemed to have a gift for this. And that was just the beginning. His major work the one that most of us listening. Probably familiar with is something called the dark alliance and over the years. Several people have kind of muddy the water of his research when he actually claimed. So it's very important for us to look at what he did do. And then also look at what he did not do precisely. So here's here's the gist in nineteen Ninety-six. Gary Webb writes a series of three articles for the Mercury News, which believers out in San Jose, San Jose. So in these these three articles are pretty lengthy and later, they're all collected into a book named the dark alliance. This. It's difficult to explain how much of an impact this made. So let's just go with what he says in this series of articles, Gary Webb alleges and claims that Nicaraguan contras are responsible for the Los Angeles crack cocaine epidemic of the nineteen eighties to bolt claim and. Yeah, that they're responsible, but they're a bunch of other hands involves two right? They're not working alone. He claims that the US is Central Intelligence Agency. You're CIA knew this was going on new. There was an active an elaborate and very very robust drug traffic in network there..
