Google Photos now charges, so what to do?

"Dot com slash talking. You may have heard many people ranting this week about google which chains its plans for google photos for five years. Google has told us. Hey upload everything for free and the will not charge you well now that they've got four trillion of our photos. They change their mind on that in june. It's going to start charging a minimum of the dollar ninety nine per month. Probably a lot more for folks to be able to upload and access their photos on google photos. i'm mad. I assume you are too. And i'm not gonna use google photos anymore. I'm done the question for many people is so what now. Well let's run through the options. Amazon photos is probably the next best. Step anybody paying one hundred and nine hundred dollars. Yearly for prime membership to get the faster shipping and entertainment also get free unlimited photo storage now. Amazon photos is not as easy to use as google photos. It's not as easy to use. His icloud for prime is a good place to go. My recommendation though is created albums. So that you'll be able to find the photos. Don't just throw everything up there. Apple icloud over. A billion of us have iphones. And we're taking zillions of pictures and we're getting next from apple all the time saying that we've run out of room They can do something about that but they don't want to because they want to sell you this online storage program which starts at only a dollar fifty gigs. Which is really tiny. Three dollars for two hundred gigs or ten dollars. Monthly for two terabytes. I've got forty terabytes on my desk. So that shows you where i'm at. I don't know about you. But i do not like getting nag messages from apple. So i'm not an icloud. Fan dropbox very simple. They're not they're not trying to sell you advertising. They're not trying to sell you other products very simply ten dollars a month for two terabytes which is great microsoft microsoft. Three sixty five seventy dollars a year for one terabyte which is not enough but you also get access online access to word excel outlook and powerpoint back to google. Here's how much. Google charging ten dollars a month for two terabytes or fifty dollars monthly for ten terabytes. And don't forget that your storage also includes g mail. Google docs google drive all of it. I believe that my g mail is forty gigabytes. And i don't have the years to be able to sit there and start deleting like a madman. So i pay and i'm not happy. The best deal in town. Best deal in. Town is smug and flicker smug mangas aimed at pros and photographers. Who are really into it. And flicker is for the general. Crowd flicker is sixty dollars a year. Unlimited photo storage. Smug mug starts at fifty five dollars yearly unlimited photo storage. So again apple is and twenty dollars. A year for two terabytes smug magas fifty five dollars a year with unlimited photo storage. Does the best deal in town. They need to do a better job of letting people know about this. Now if you don't wanna do online storage there's always hard drives. That's good and bad. You get a lot more room on a on a traditional spinning disc car drive but they will eventually fail. You can pick up an. At drive for about one hundred fifty dollars

Hacking Steam controllers and making fast home directories

Hacking Steam controllers and making fast home directories

"Have you been up to. I have been hacking my steam controller. Last show. I mentioned that i was thinking about different controllers for my intendo switch and the i had great hints that it might be possible to use a steam controller with one. Well i've looked into a bit more and it's not only possible is actually quite easy. Is they just bluetooth to. I think i asked you this at the time. Just a brief device it is. I mean you can use it as bluejays device but it doesn't work with the switch has a tooth control. What does the phone where do to it to make it work so the phone where basically pretends to be another third party usb controller and you probably over the usb cable and it says oh hallo you've usb control so only works as a wired controller eight dollars which is unfortunate however. I do happen to have an extremely long. Usb cable from a previous project so is it's not actually a problem for me but yeah basically. There's a the the micro controller even in the controller. There's a guy who's been playing around with. Dave board with that micro controller and managed to reverse engineer enough of what's needed for a switch controller and enough of how the steam control is original. Firmware works to be able to write new firmware for that chip. And then you actually you you plug it into your computer and hold the right trigger. An appears as a usb device. Firmware dot been cash and then you just black the new file onto their and it works but yet because that dashboard doesn't contain the blue chip he's not been able to get bluetooth working with it. Works perfectly well over usb okay so this is clearly a community effort this is now sanctioned right okay and can you flip flop between foam where editions if that's the right yes So you can back up what you absolutely should backup the original valve firmware from the controller. And then yeah basically. You can write the custom. Firmware on and there's a couple of different versions depending on what you're doing with it and then you can write the backup back to it and there's also instructions for how if you completely break the whole thing how to get the original phone way from valve in and restore it back to a king state is on online. At least it's some diabetes about three or four steps but he's some dd which isn't terribly friendly. So it'd be nice if someone by a little gary to do it for you. Considering the actual processes is quite straightforward interesting i manage to Not completely brick but sort of break one of my steam control as i put the optioning in steam big picture to say. Put the bluetooth firmware on which i did and After doing that it was only possible to use that steam controller when it was plugged in. Oh over cable it wouldn't speak to its dungle bluetooth anymore. It's obviously in a bit of a bad way. If this recovery instruction somewhere maybe. I should give that go. I think you just put it with holding down one of the aba x. Warburtons and the steam controller to reset. I have tried that. I did find his instructions and that did not help. So maybe maybe these like you know. D- recovery commands might be Away to solve force back life. Yeah one thing that i decided. I'd do as a result having got this working as i'm going to buy a secondhand steam controller to have permanently in nintendo switch mode because it turns out that if you're not bothered about you're having a box or the receiver. Which for this purpose. I'm not at all you can actually pick up a secondhand one quite cheaply. Yeah i got one in c x nazi. So i've go four of them now. In fact i will mention next time. Remember to mention what. I've been doing with my steam because it's fun. Also what about. You might seem what you've been up to I have been making an extremely fast home directory. A fast one very very very fast not spinning rust than not spinning rust. Now do i mentioned recently upgraded my computer to a thread repair system. You might have meant. I may have mentioned that. And that means. I've got access to gen full speed. Pci ports and two slots and included with my new motherboard was an adding cod which is a sixteen lane. Pci cod the you comp- full mvm ame drives into and then dedicate full lanes to each of those drives. So i have got full two terabyte gen full nv me drives in this thing and then created a raid zero stripe to create an eight terabyte storage device. Which is now my home directory. I'm what you doing with this incredibly time directory. Well a few things. So i'm not using all of my home directory. Some of got mounted to places where vm's and containers live. because. When i'm composing snaps they usually quite big the the other thing that thread rippers. Really good at as a compression and decompression and snaps a compressed bit having a suitably fast processor and really fast storage means. I can build snaps really fast and also Will discuss a bit later. There are other images that i work on regularly. And in order to which rate on those i need to make multi gigabyte compressed images on the regular and now i've a processor that can do that very well and then very false storage to actually make that compression and decompression step very very quick.

Backup Is Not a 4-Letter Word

"If, you've ever seen Dustin Hoffman in the movie the graduate. You'll recognize what I'm about to say. He received sage advice for his career in just one word now remember this was the nineteen sixties. That one word plastics? Will I have just one word that should be at the foundation of your backing up an archiving strategy automate Absolutely automate. So I'm going to be covering a few techniques today but at the heart of the process for your backing up in archiving and I will make a distinction between the two you need to have as much automation as possible. If indeed, you're truly going to have a system that is up to date in liable and all that good stuff. Now, in my case, I have I cloud in dropbox I cloud grabs, files of that are on my neck or that go into photos, and that's a lot of files I have the big plan to two terabyte plan and all they have to do is pay the. Bill once a month and I'm good to go. I don't have to think about it. Any further than that in dropbox grabs files out of specific folders again, just takes care of it. All to do is pay the annual fee and I'm good to go there as well. Now, you may choose a different service but I encourage you to bring as much automation as you can into your backup plan because the more automation you have the stronger your plan will be now before I get to my five tips in addition to automation I, just WANNA share a note on the difference between backing up in archiving, they are not synonymous. Backing up is what you do during the project to ensure that you don't lose your work if you're working on a wedding. You probably not going to get it all done in one night or in one sitting. So you back up so that when you come back to your wedding, you know you can just pick up and go. But as something weird happens, you haven't lost your project. But when you're backing up, you're not backing it up in the final state you're backing up a work in progress. Archiving happens when the project is over. In case, you need to revisit it for whatever reason. Now, archives are the final version in general you don't save all the incremental backups that lead to the final version you say, the final version itself. So archives are the final version. They don't need to be as quickly accessible as your backups, your backup she want right there on the flash drive or wherever you happen to be using. Their the works in progress archives the final version a writing. Now regardless of if it's an archive or backup, you need to have a system, right you need to have a system for managing both from this point forward I'm going to use a more or less interchangeably, but I want you to understand that archives are longer term backups are more works in progress. Right here are five additional thoughts to consider when endeavoring. To. Preserve your work. Okay. This start out with the classic three to one rule. I'm sure you're familiar with this and if you're not, you're going to be in just a few seconds three, two one. Well, what does that mean it means three copies of your data one primary copy into backups. Two types of storage media local drive you know network, you know whatever happens to be two types of media and one copy off site or in the cloud in the cloud qualifies as offsite three, two, one, three copies of your data, two types of storage media and one copy off site or in the cloud. Now, I do both offsite and in the cloud. So I have a copy of that goes to my home, right my. Primary. Copy is here at the studio I have it backed up on a hard drive here. So I'm actually like at four something like that, and then I have most of that data in the cloud. Well. So I like both offsite in cloud, but you know one or the other the thinking being that you can be as fastidious as possible backing up your data if you have it on a hard drive next to the computer. And something happens at that particular location, rather be theft or some sort of natural disaster or whatever. Then you still lose everything. So off site is important because chances are good that you know something that ten miles away on a server hundred miles away that if something happens to your locally that you're offsite copy will still be accessible case with three two, one, three, two, one, three copies, two types of media and one copy offsite. Number two don't erase your memory cards until three two one is in place. This is something that have advocated for a long time. Or at least consider your memory cards, one of those three

The days of unlimited pandemic internet are over

"The days of pandemic related unlimited Internet access are apparently over. From American public media, this is marketplace tech I'm Ali would. We've been looking on our show lately. At how amidst this pandemic? The Internet is everything access and cost our problems for many people, but what about data lots of broadband providers limit how much data users can use each month go over, and there are extra fees some lifted these caps at the start of the pandemic, but as of July first comcast at and T. and T. mobile have brought back some of their data caps Tom Merritt host. The Daily Tech News Show podcast I asked him. What was the argument for data caps? If you ask the marketing departments of ISP's. They'll tell you that data caps make it a fair playing ground for everyone so that all the bits don't get used up by really really greedy people and there is a very slight truth that if a lot of people were using a lot of the Internet at the same time, it can cause some congestion, but it's not like there's a limited amount of bits the. The real justification is that they want ways to price things to encourage people to want to pay more and data caps are a way that people can understand. Oh, if I use more data I, pay more okay. I get it on some level. I can see that being a slightly reasonable argument like there is no other service. Where if you use more, you don't pay more right, or is this true lease artificial? I think the disconnect. Because even though the government assures us, it's not a utility. People think of the Internet is a utility. The the difference comes in the justification. If as just said yeah, we're just like that. I think fewer people would have an issue, but the ISP trying to argue that they're fighting congestion just really doesn't hold water. When you do examinations of congestion, they generally happen at peak use times whether there are data caps are not data kept supply all day long, so they don't really. Encourage people not to use data at the times were congestion might be caused and they don't. It sounds like you're also saying they don't improve service for everyone. The congestion still occurs. It's just that some people have to pay correct. Yeah, that that that prime time congestion anybody especially on cable ISP has run into it when everybody gets home specially at a time when everybody is home and fires up there video APPs data caps. Don't matter data caps. Don't keep people from. From doing things at the same time they keep people from using their data at other times. When congestion is less likely to occur, we're also at a time. When the pandemic is not over, and in fact, people need arguably unfettered. Internet access more than ever. Is this just bad timing I? Think probably what's happening is the companies are feeling a bottom line pinch as well and all of their business models are based on charging. People for more data. Use so giving away. Service without a data cap means there's less reason for somebody to upgrade to a larger package if that's how their business is created. If your ISP is built on this, you're making less money at a time. When the economy's bad, probably more people are canceling service, and you're looking for ways to bring in that money, so if they can quietly just let the data caps kick back in then that might help them whether the storm. We should say that at least you know. Comcast's CAP is one point two terabytes, which is a lot right. What would you have to do as a household to hit that cap? I don't have numbers. At the ready but you have to have a lot of people downloading A lot of things were streaming. A lot of you know high definition. Four K. video and honestly data caps. It's always in the best interests of ISP's to have data caps Behi- enough that they only affect a certain number of people. You want them to be high. Because you don't want to have people suddenly decide will. This is unusable right and you don't want to have public backlash saying I keep running into this data cap I can't even use it to watch Netflix. Et Cetera, because he is, he's no that that people are using their internet to to watch streaming video to do high bandwidth applications so you WanNa? Keep it just high. High enough that you get the users that might be willing to pay to to pay for that. It also does have some uses in making it easier to go after the folks who do abuse the network and and run things on the network that it's not designed to do. like massive bitor and operations or or or cryptocurrency stuff without having to define them it makes it easier for enforcement, so so those two things are probably what's driving this and keeping folks happy means that that data cap needs to apply only to a minority of your customers.

I'm jeff the NAG here with six things free to do one change your passwords to keep hackers away to go through your subscriptions to weed out the ones. John's you're not using three skin your analog photos and Organiz your digital collection four clear out your smartphone apps five backup your data Six pull out the smartphone and interview. Your parents kids or other loved ones for posterity. Let me give you a little brief thumbnails on each pass words words. Hackers only need one to get into your entire digital identity. Companies like scan my photos dot com and I'm memories can do the heavy heavy lifting for you another company. Yes video will transfer some of your video tapes. Backup all those amazing photos you've taken under phone won't look so great if you lose your phone in hadn't backed them up posting them on. Facebook doesn't count because the social network load lowers the resolution to about one tenth of the original assize. Now so here's some choices for you. If you're an Amazon. Prime member Amazon will allow for unlimited uploads at full resolution but only for photos not video. Google photos is a free service unlimited. Backup for photos and videos however Google will lower the resolution but not as dramatically as facebook. Photos look fine videos. Not as fine Many people also looked online cloud backup from Google. Drive Apple Cloud Microsoft one drive and dropbox the charges about ten dollars monthly for two terabytes of storage. If you're willing to go old school pick up a hard drive and those prices are amazingly affordable at about one hundred dollars for four terabyte drive however drives are known to eventually fail L. especially once with moving parts so one popular alternative is the SST or solid state dried which are more reliable and expensive look disband band around one hundred bucks for a one terabyte model clear out your ABS- all those smartphone apps have higher resolution than ever in they take up tons of storage space. Based on your devices there are also data hogs I. I did a look just the other day. Tick Tock. Five hundred megabytes. Google trips. Four hundred megabytes Amazon Amazon photos. Three hundred twenty three megabytes. That's over a gig right there. Some of you listening may have a sixteen gigabyte smartphone. So you get the math. Obviously these three half to go go to your settings on your smartphone to get rid of them. Finally interview loved ones on on your smartphone or at least most now owns a fantastic video camera it sitting in your pocket or purse. Pull it out over the holidays. "Roads it's the Ernest Hancock show where we're going their arms in Rome I don't need no stinking raw ads D- okay this we're going to go ahead and do what I want is Ab these these these terms defined you know because we still not you know really what okay token and cryptocurrency tell me the difference between a token and a crypto currency can one be another what was that mean well a you know it's I don't know that it's very will the fine term so so whatever I tell you somebody's GonNa say something different onions I use the term token kind of like a pro now so if it's something you can trade Louis restrict this to crypto currency kind of crypto tokens if it's something you can train on a blockchain I call it a token and so if I can ascended asset you on the blockchain than a blockchain itself cannot be a token yeah the black gene could be holding data I can certainly send messages over the blockchain of I can do a lot of things with the watching sides a sin tokens receive tokens okay now this is talking about when we did let me kind of chief I remember what you told me factum is a operating system that was is to use blockchain technology to provide services and records for everything certainly to be a plug and play for developing countries to come in and say hey man we need a voting system we played his government thing so we need to record properties or playing this thanks so we need currency playing government thing we need we need we need at this was to provide a foundation ain't system for all those applications to plug into using what any blockchain individual fact Dems how how far off was I no I grill with words but but yeah pretty much what you said I do think that watching has this ability to do more than just pass around tokens it has this ability to document and so if you're going to have a distributed autonomous organization where there's no one in charge but everyone is cooperating and unless let's look at the opportunities social media right now we depend upon bucs find video and if you took decides you are no longer to be found then suddenly your video is they would do that that'd be raw yet there are a lot of conservative groups in Libertarian groups that are finding the videos stripped from you know the public space by Banyu to write and the call to get your content your ideas if you aren't on this you know site and the side is a public company they are not required to respect your freedom of speech they can remove you if they don't like you and so the blockchain has a promise of of creating defined video that can't be censored in this wet and So this is when okay I wanNA I WANNA ask how K we've created a system I P S okay we've taken all of James Corbett and Luke Hausky and marketing crippen the Internet of all the videos they have if you go to declare today's show if you look at today's show and then here I'll show the audience let's go to the day show and you scroll down and you'll see in there somewhere we're donnas put it that we got the goodies there it is and if you're looking at it yeah go ahead and do that Paul and you look at previous Phoenix you have your computer you can do that or no I can I can go to Freedoms Phoenix at the top you'll see the show with Paul snap if you go into there and you scroll down in that archive below the third hour you'll see fasteners three addresses their premiums six pirateswithoutborders and the Corbett report now we did this turned it on and February of this year right the week we went to nor cocoa and we said look they're gonna be taken your stuff away okay I'm telling you I've been screaming this forever you guys are exactly the guys they wanted to lead you know there's we'll make sure you guys know that so we did this demonstration a yes it can be forever what I need to know is I'm going yeah it's Kinda noted out there we have copies and then we have nodes at make sure that we always got it and each of us have her own little raspberry Pi two terabyte drive that kind of we note now the thing is is that when you say on the blockchain's or stuff doesn't go away how is that stored because this is one thing I never could understand we got one megabyte blocks on Bitcoin and I'm going you ain't nothing on a megabyte block except text or references to something so where is the data stored so that it can always be you understand question yeah absolutely and and the answer to that for almost any well froth-pak purposes the data is stored by people and by computer systems and so the data keying go away everyone quits care so you turn off all your PF s nodes and everybody else that hears about this onto turns off there's and all that content goes away because I fast relies on the people jerry to distribute that the in people no longer care the data goes away so one of the things that you're doing with watching you creating incentives for people to one old not because of the necessarily the content because the protocol is aimed them for whole cuts okay so you're saying it's still using factum of keeping and stuff blockchain forever the blockchain is not the storage mechanism it's the reward mechanism to store it right exactly okay so it's incentives okay in January February right before we flipped on Ip we'd been working on waiting on anybody because I'm not waiting on anybody but it was vile coin foul coin which I find out later you know and and then storage we had guys named Sean you know the eating is the tech there or not I think I know why because we're GonNa talk about that when we come back and why we just did it around the world antiwar dot com run by people who understand that.

"Drive extent storage plants how extended as an extended storage plan yeah but you already could go. You're already could go up to one terabyte but now they'll sell you storage for an additional terabyte. If you're a an office US three sixty five subscriber consumers terabyte for office well. I mean honestly I. I bet by this time next year. I will have to buy additional storage on one drive. Yeah I'm up in the eye by just crossed the nine hundred megabyte thrush. I I just happened to see that on on the web version the other day guy us like two percent of my storage. I can probably delete a lot of stuff yeah yeah but you can photos you use it. You know you start yacking media right right so a big part of it. It is very that's true yeah but before now a lot of people who wanted to buy additional one drive storage weren't really able to do that right and now you can buy it in increments of what is it two hundred. That sounds right. Click took to twitter kings Turner Gigs. That's an extra dollar ninety nine per month and you can go up to the one terabyte which would cost you nine hundred ninety nine per month. If you want to add so one a couple things to know if your office this is for office three sixty five home home and consumer subscribers and you know with with the home version you can have a up to five users. I believe on your plan by the way six at least only the originally user can buy additional storage so it can't be an additional terabyte for for everybody. WHO's on the planner just so you know Mary Jo yes one terabyte of notepad text. That's a lot of tax one terabyte Arab notepad text would be let me see if I can put the Commas in here nine hundred sixteen million two hundred fifty nine thousand six hundred eighty nine pages ages billion almost a billion pages. Yes this is the size of Nielsen Book. Yeah yeah so I think if you just you know you don't need all that much storage yeah text while you were. GonNa have photos. It's photos the backup. I've seen it yeah nowadays. Two terabyte seems to be the kind of going standard for a lot of these services in fact I think dropbox you you can only.

"Line from Largo Florida hi Nancy hello Leo how are you I'm well is key Largo the same as Largo no it's not my favorite bogey move you know we're more in the Saint Pete Clearwater well what can I do for you today well I just bought myself a new macbook pro today as to the advantage of the sale and the tax free and all that good stuff congratulations three weekends so nice but there's a lot of commerce a tax free weekend that's cool yeah that's what it's all about five days a year I love that what a good idea because you don't have a state income tax a sales tax is pretty important to a six the city coffers never the less that's great so tell me about your new macbook well I love that I have the Samsung Q. one external hard drive yeah actually that he drive yeah in the plug it in and it doesn't it show more matter for windows yeah so this is the problem with the T. one do you use the encryption that came with the T. one or not I did when I had it on a different matter that's why you can't see it now so the way the T. one works I know I actually take it off I think it's great to have drive encryption and I love it is Sam sung kind of made it by default on the T. one it's up to you want a little U. S. B. drive it's actually great it's a terabyte in some cats I know how big is yours yes winter by now they I think the other up to the T. five which is two terabytes but it's really a great little device I bought one immediately I use as my backup drive but it had by default a file on there that you could run on mac or windows that would it would install special drivers into your computer this is the problem would modify the operating system so that you can just plug it in and you'd read it and you don't plug it in it you would know it's encrypted except that somebody else would be able to read the drive but I don't like any third party modifying my colonel my operating system kernel so it made it made me a little squirrely I didn't like the idea and I removed it album is it is installed in your old back it's not installed in your new mac did suffer probably still on the T. one I mean it comes with that software bill ten but I imagine you can also download it so if you want to continue to use what's on that drive on the new mac you're gonna have to Google the Samsung T. one software me just see yeah they offered for download I can't remember you gave it a password right yeah yeah then you know that password still yes okay that's the most important thing because obviously if you don't know the password nothing's going to fix this so yeah I see the portable SSDs software for mac on Samsung's page you could download that you'd have to run it would modify your mac would require reboot and then when you put the T. one in on your new Mackey last well wait a minute what's the password okay and you'll be able to access so I might finish of thought which does sometimes happen with external drives if they're formatted for windows usually a mac and read it but sometimes it can be problematic but in this case that's not the issue is just an encryption software comes on the T. one okay I appreciate it because it's nice and convenient to carry that with the laptop when they need to that you're not gonna like this part at all thank you reasons whatever is you gotta deal and that'll macbook pro is because it's per it's the rumors are strong the be a new macbook pro next month find a good home I hate to bring be the bearer of bad tidings yeah this is going to be my main thing because we do everything on my phone and my iPad this is just for my own good on it instead it it is that the one for your backup is that your backup drive I will I got the direct approach has two fifty six gig yeah yeah it's not super fast is not a it's not U. S. B. three so the newer ones Sam sung makes our they'll be a little faster the the fastest it's gonna be expensive as it is a if you could get a thunderbolt three external drive that'll be as fast as an internal drive in fact it's my recommendation for people who are buying any computer nowadays with the thunderbolt three because those internal SSDs are more expensive they tend to be smaller you don't want to spend a route to get two terabyte SST in there but that's fine if you get an external thunderbolt three SS de those are expensive but they'll be full speed as fast as an internal drive and so that's kind of convenience but yeah what your husband doesn't know and doesn't care it's fine yeah he doesn't know much when he doesn't know won't hurt him right I need to give your credit card my wife does too now I'm worried all right there there you go there's a solution Nancy okay great thank you very much yep I'll put the link in the show notes a tech guy at labs dot com the Samsung page where you download that software it's encryption software you run it it modifies your operating system then when you plug in the T. one next time it'll ask for password which would give it and from then on you it operates just like an external hard drive that's the beauty of it is that if the X. men Christians completely transparent the question is important by the way on an solid state drive like that because it isn't possible to fully wipe the data from a solid state drive it's complicated but it has to do with the way these drives are manufactured they do something called wear leveling and they don't write consistently to the drive like an old hard drive did no hard drive you could go sector by sector say right ones over it race it right ones over erase it and then you would have to worry about somebody getting your data off of you you could do the same thing with an SSD but you can't guarantee you've hit every sector that's the problem that's because we're like one so some leakage will occur thanks for the support on this potato chips that had that fake fat some leakage will occur and but whether it's important bit of data like a password or something you don't care about honestly it's like pretty pretty secure but if you own crypt before you use the drive then unless the person has the decryption key they can't read what's there you don't have to worry about a race in the drive because they can't get to it it's all gobbledygook from the the and again this is a rumor that apple's gonna do a new laptop a pretty well supported rumor by a number of sources as early as September maybe later next month apple will announce new iPhones that's almost always the case sometimes they differ they met what the iPhone to take all the attention they for announcing anything else until the next month so we do think they'll be some new inexpensive iPads this year and a new macbook pro this year it maybe that's not till October they announced that now here's the important thing about this new macbook pro though and why yes he's not listening I really hope residents that was why you might want to wait if you can wait a month or two the rumor is it will be a sixteen inch in a fifteen inch body apple like all the manufacturers now is going to make a bigger screen with smaller frame so they get a sixteen inch screen in the same size body that's good news that's so it was always nice that more screen real estate even better news from my point of view apple apparently and this one I I won't believe this till I see it is abandoning that horrible butterfly keyboard they've been foisting on us and all their laptops last few years and bring back a more traditional spring keyboard which would be fantastic they finally apparently heard what everybody's been saying I don't I would like to get rid of the touch far too I find that and needless for Paree but I can live with a touch work to put a good keyboard in a sixteen screen I think this back pro might be macbook pro might be a good choice now I should also point out this macbook pro is probably going to be a high end version this is what apple's been doing you know they have the I mac pro they have the mac pro they're making very powerful very expensive machines I expect this new macbook pro so does so see that's about report the teke hi everybody I'm Kathie Lee Gifford you and I are busy people some days it's just not enough time to get everything done am I.

"Of these have free shipping shipping associated with them so you're talking about two terabytes for thirty bucks heart can't even get a sixty four terabyte flash drive. I guess you can't but well dream of your drive base. Lots aren't an issue because that's what I had. I was kind of I had gotten that routine with my unread box because I had you know fifteen bays to fill up <hes> but actually then I started running into okay so I have. I have actually ten seda ports on that motherboard. Four of those being from one are those the P._i.. Cards in non read so at ten so I got used to kind of Oh adding drive drive. I never thought I would actually gets a ten just because I didn't have that much. Storage storage needs back then so I was using smaller drives now like if I had been smart I could've saved some faith now. I've used all ten and I either to add another P._C._i.. Card or Eljay Card or I need to start replacing smaller dry larger drizin nats pain to you could probably sell you're you're good at this though you could probably unload those smaller drives in pick up some pretty early and I wanted to go through the process of pulling out the drive putting in the new one letting it copy and recreate all the data. It's it's a pain to do it that way robb way because I do have <hes> so. It's a fifteen bay unit so I'd probably grab one more P._C._i.. Car they'll give me four more say deports prices go from act just add for more drives because I haven't bays in that chassis tad the drives yeah. It's a tough problem to have isn't it. It is pretty ridiculous when I'm looking for a two hundred fifty gig not even that maybe one hundred gig worked for the for the the the pictures that are coming off my camera in the garage in a you know and I'm using a one terabyte esotique. All my other drives are consumed with burst mining at this point of that problem <hes> yet. That's a pretty lame problem. I'll why the drove oh it's at this point. The Robo has been loaded with about two point one five terabytes of drives right that consists of in this is really the droves. Kinda got everything that's leftovers so I've a seven hundred old seven hundred fifty gig drive in there. I have a two terabyte that I bought just to kind of get some some storage in their a one terabyte green a five hundred GIG seagate drive like who who has any of that. I have a three hundred twenty gig drive that Sti- stet still work yeah still working in its it. I threw that in there and it did okay got got it a little bit more space. I am at least at this point. I saw it has two and a half terabyte two point one five terabytes total about one point six seven again. I've got a my H._p.. Homes or my H._p.. Server micro server is backing up the moral data box so I've been working on getting that all done and then Diovan <hes>. I have a sink that goes between the H._p.. Server and the DRO to get that backed up so those those are always. It's kind of three you know it's got three to one stuff right. That's going on so the drove owes got about four hundred ninety gig laugh so I don't know if I'm in danger run out of space. I don't know if I really need to spend thirty bucks on a to tear by but Mike Thirty Bucks for two terabytes Merisi Yeah Yeah No. It's just crazy all those drives with one thirty dollar drive life yeah right. You're saying it's up to you know one point something total space yeah yeah. It's when one point six seven on that dollar drive you have more space than all yeah basically yeah yeah and if I got another two terabyte it would really blow out on the drove and really blow out the space I would I would be good for a while get point and the plan had been to be honest. The plan had been when burst when we stopped doing verse and I thought I was gonNA stop doing burst a long time ago what was drives over and using for storage. They've all the DRO boy I have a bunch of four terabyte drives and they would have put <hes> think I have five and I would have put five four terabytes in there and that have been a pretty Nice Robo doc yeah <hes> done that 'cause they're still there still still <hes> they are still burst mining yeah yeah yeah well. It's just kind of speaks a little bit to kind of the ridiculousness of where hard-right prices have gone on prime day a couple of things that are going on right now spend ten bucks at whole foods. Course you know Amazon dot whole foods. You can get a ten dollar Amazon credit which is pretty great if you haven't tried that they're really trying to get people to buy the whole food stuff stuff. They're also trying to entice you too bye to your shopping there so twenty five dollars off Gatorade Pepsi Doritos and more. How can you not get more gatorade Pepsi into Rados like that's can't run out of those kinds of things right the bread and butter from from a tech side right now Amazon Echo dots twenty five bucks sorry my echo now is listening to me so make sure she's not talking she still listening at least somebody else's listening to the podcast and then <hes> apple air pods hundred forty four ninety nine which Mike I thought those air pods were a little more yeah once? Is that what they are. I thought they were more in the two hundred oral not uh-huh okay. I think it depends on if you get the charging the wireless charging case now or not okay well. It says the Apple Air Pods are the best ear buds for those invested in the apple ecosystem. macy's had them for one hundred twenty-nine earlier in the week so by the way soft Tom's hardware Tom's Tom's guide dot com macy's had them for one hundred twenty nine earlier in the week so I think they'll get cheaper on prime day however they may be hard to find in stock at a lower price so I had split the baby there because they're actually they're not ones that they're one fifty nine with the regular Susan's brand new map doc one fifty nine with just a regular charging case one ninety nine with the wireless charging case. I do not oh how how a wireless charging cases worth an extra forty dollars on headphones. I just don't understand how right on your all wireless at this point big pad or something like that maybe but I was I was using wireless charging for. Wow I kind of gave up on it to be honest. I have you know I have the anger stands where you stand up and he said in its charging but depending on what case you use and then if you go to pick up to use it stops charging. I'm like just coming back my cord one hundred percent court Gabar got. I've never gone wireless charging so you might if you've been wait. If you've been holding off for for air pods you might want to this may be the time to pick them up. You might seem as Irit said of I mean mean. There's a bunch now that do the same functionality but if you are an iphone user especially if you are in the apple ecosystem there just so darn convenient they weren't oh totally totally. The Amazon Fire TV sticks are going. It'll be available for forty bucks typically. That's about thirty dollars off. I still though word of cautioned everyone I can recommend those because of the limitation of them in Google if you Hughes Youtube or a spotty there's a workaround for Youtube tube but or if you want to watch youtube TV don't get fire. Stick doesn't work the Google Amazon still are feuding over that and you know I think youtube just so basic right. You shouldn't have to have a work around to watch youtube on on your device. I mentioned earlier. I didn't know which countries this would be available in so last year. Prime Day was celebrated in seventeen countries this year eighteen including the U._S. U._K.. Spain Singapore Netherlands Luxembourg Japan Italy really India Germany France China China while Canada Belgium Austria and Australia in Australia they have. I don't think they had Amazon Australia. I don't I don't know and two thousand eighteen prime day will expand expand to the United Arab Emirates for total of eighteen countries so those are those cranberries at are available for you. If you're listening in one of those countries <hes> you might want to <hes> just watch for those Mike. I'm Kinda with you. I don't there's not a lot of things are Kinda need. It's been an expensive time for my family with my daughter in college and kids. Doing things and you know just we've been bought. I've been doing redoing some landscaping before we sell this place and so I mean Kinda holding off on the tech in the tech is just I didn't I think we alluded to this info seven when I was kind of saying it off my lawn but I think the tech is just lasting listing longer by it. Just doesn't break like it used to right. Don't you think I one hundred percent. You know. It's the same reason that I'm kind of ready to do build because number one. I haven't done one in a while and that's because I I you know all this hardware like we've talked about. I mean my unread box. You heard me talk about a million times is built off a motherboard from who knows how long ago I mean probably not gonNa Graduate High School. If it's still works at right works great I have no reason to replace it is in the functionality. The performances is just fine so but speaking of deals and new tech. I did get one new piece of tech over the last two weeks so it's Kinda cool. I Dunno Jim. You're a Youtube T._v.. Subscribers enough. You've got the same email was ended. July lisek were a Youtube T._v.. Subscriber and if you were the head of the household right so if you're using someone else's in your accounts added to their family you might not have got it but if you are the main person on the family account <hes> they sound email for their google nest hubs and they were going to give it to you for forty nine dollars. These things are usually one twenty nine. They were on sale for seventy dollars. I think <hes> in just Google store and if you were a Youtube T._v.. PERSON YOU'RE GONNA for forty nine in bucks or forty five bucks or something really achieving forty. He was like forty or between forty and fifty <hes>. I didn't have a need for one of these. Obviously you guys know that I'm an Alexa. How sorry I'm just acting and I just actually known <hes>? We're in Amazon House. We use them. You can't turn down that good of a deal right especially try out now. The Google nest hub is the one with the it's it's smaller but it still has the screen on it so you've got US screen <hes> and so you know if you need to watch youtube videos if putting it in the kitchens a perfect eric place and so I've really been having fun testing out the google capabilities so comparing Google assistant to aleady or Amazon and releasing which was better man Jim I. I don't know if you you have used a google product or Google assistant lately they are. I mean they're pretty good right. I've heard that you are concerned about privacy because it's been the one remember want one plug it is because this is just now I now I do have because we'd before we had no.

"Reality, all the realities, eight ask Leo, the phone number eight, eight eight two seven five, five, three six toll free from anywhere in the US or Canada. So you can give me a ring anywhere and actually anywhere in the world because if you use Skype out or some, some other way of calling that you calling a free number shouldn't cost you anything. Eight eight ask Leo baeck, the phones we go line three chip, corona del mar. Thanks for hanging on ship. Leila point the tech. Thank you for helping me. Hugh weeks ago asking about a. Set of motherboard and processor. Intra. So I could do PC. I'm still not decided between Intel and AMD of never had any of computer, but starting look pretty good right now. Like asked about Nasr's have nast now. Drove s rinse crate, and has five two terabyte. Western Digital read nast drives in it. It's been going for six years, not a single hiccup. Nice except for the power is turned off and it's directly connected. So it's not a network. Yup. So I want it always not really is not really a nasty. It's a, it's a big I that's how I use, my robo too, by the way, it's a big hard drive with redundant disks. So if one of the discs, dis you can just without turning it off. Even put a new skin, it'll rebuild and you're good to go. So it's, it's what we call a DASS not a Nass. It's a direct attached storage, a Nasr's a network attached storage. That's the only difference. Right. And someone build another one right now, Western Digital red mass drives and four terabyte. They were won ten last week. Another ninety nine dollars amazing amazing. Isn't it amazing? I just saw that price. Trump was talking yesterday. Suggested someone get a four terabyte driving. I went to check the price like ridiculous eight bucks for an external incredible. So this is a good time to buy hard drives, I guess. So then my question is, what NASA should I get? I could go with another drove oh.

"So thank you toll of our listeners who are playing with it and learning it a lot of interest has been generated people have been having trouble with with squirrel on MAC and Lineker under wine. And so I just wanted to say that the I went to lengths to make sure that squirrel that GRC's windows, client would work under wine. But it's not my intention that it really be that it received heavy use what we need is a native MAC implementation of a squirrel client, both. There is some work underway on a native client underline. As far as I know. No one's working on a MAC, OS version. But we also have browser extensions for fire FOX in chrome and edge. And so those work beautifully on, on a platform independent fashion. So you know the problem's been solved. I just, you know, there was a lot of problems with, with getting wine to work just because, you know, it's amazing to me that a windows app, even tries to run on a non windows environment. And I I'm surprised that it works as well as it does. But does and also Leo you and I talked about what we will do which will be the sort of the official squirrel explainer, professional video production that. I'm very excited about doing. I want to solicit explicitly solicit user videos for how to use squirrel. I think users are better placed at it makes more sense, for for end users who are interested in creating videos for how to do things the different parts of using squirrel to create videos at they do them. I will be happy to host the best of those on the, the GRC, squirrel, web forums and to host the bandwidth, I'm annoyed by you know, commercials in YouTube. And so I will host the bandwidth. But if, if our if people who listened to the podcast our camera equipped, and like the idea of producing some somehow to use squirrel videos, all different aspects of, of the experience. I'd love to have them and loved host them. So I just wanted to make that explicit. I I'm not gonna do that. I will do the that the technical how it works presentation. But be really fun to have user sourced videos, and I just a quick note of about spin. Right. I realized through some other work that I've been doing that. I had was underestimating the performance that I think we're gonna get under six point one. I'd long been talking about half a terabyte per hour. And it looks like spin right will be able to do on a seventy five hundred RPM two terabyte drive, a level two data recovery scan in closer to three hours, just a few minutes more than three hours. So that's not bad for. Two terabytes, and of course, what I had failed to take into account was that, that data rate on. These drives increases as their aerial bit density goes up and their aerial bit density, has gone nuts in the last five years. And as a consequence, their raw maximum data rate has been in increasing. And the point is spin, right will be able to run at whatever the maximum throughput of the drive. Is it will not miss a revolution as its operating? So it's gonna be screaming. And as soon as I get the rest of squirrel put to bed as we know I will be back to it. I mentioned a an IOS security app. Andy past Zack. Tweeted about T OT P. He said, I went and enabled te'o t p that's of course, time based one time password, Z, the increasingly ubiquitous authenticates, he said, I went and enabled T OT OTP on every site. I have an account on that supports it. And now my Google authenticated is a complete mess having one long list of T, OT, P codes could be quite problematic, especially since I use a fire FOX extension that wipes all my cookies..

"It just sort of clone your drive. Hence the name Jason, you've got more more data specific stuff because you've got critical critical stuff on your computers. I am so about to up your game right now is crazy. So for the house, I have three rotating, eight terabyte hard, drives, I have one that I worked from, that's the that's the workhorse every day. I walk into the office. I plug one of men with the secondary enduring the day, my main hard-drive with carbon copy clone every four hours is cloned to the secondary. Dry. Live in the house. I have the third drive every day. I swap out the secondary and third drives. So when I come to work every day, I've got another backup of what I've just been working on a case, the master dies. I have another backup always pretty much ready to go the worst. It's going to be as twenty four hours out of date. Now, some people might think that's overkill, but for what we do, we have very critical data that we need to protect because these shows cannot be replicated takes us a month to get guest on, and we got the recordings and then God hard-drive dies. That's just not the way that you do professional work. So that is my rotation with just the stuff at the house. Now when you go on the road, you leave that hard drive at home, I recommend having to you keep one at the house, and you keep another one with you, those little tiny, Western Digital of like two terabyte drives under one hundred bucks do a carbon copy cleaner of the entire system. Right before you leave. Throw it in your luggage. It's not a lot of weight. And so you just have. But in your luggage, if your laptop dies while you're on the road, go to the store pick up another one. Plug it in your back in business. Don't have to wait for FedEx. You're good to go in. Also, when you're on the road, always use cloud storage for your documents us, either Google Drive or dropbox or whatever one drive whatever your flavor is. So anything new that you create while you're on the road is always going to be in the cloud, so you can restore your hard drive. Get all your data back and then pull anything that you've done recently backed down from the cloud, so you do not miss a beat. That is absolutely the best way to go yet you're right on the documents thing. That's another thing that I didn't really mention because I talked about cloning drive. I don't have anything on the computer itself. That's an important document all the show prep. Any sort of file that anyone's working with is almost always in the cloud now. Yes, I'm going to have some images or whatever, on my computer or some notes or something that is on a.

"If there's one thing I love talking about except maybe perhaps for video editing its storage because storage is at the heart of what we do. And when I was talking with Eric I was taking notes on all a forty terabyte hard drive coming by twenty twenty-five. I've got it down on my notes. This is exciting stuff. But I need storage today. And that's where g technology comes in Christina Garza is It's gotta SATA SSD inside of TV remote. She's holding it in her hand and changing channels two of the computers over here on the left. Right. But the special thing about this. It's very rugged. It's actually waterproof. If you accidents or out in the field shooting in the rain drops out of your bag or out of your hand in into a puddle. It's going to be protected so. It's got IP sixty seven raiding similar to a cell phone, Scott thunderbolt three or USB connection on the back of this version is USB. By the way, pricing for the rugged is spinning media's about what varies by storage, of course. hundred megabytes out about twenty one hundred twenty eight hundred okay and pricing this one we just announced a brand new two terabyte in this and it's a seven seven ninety nine seven hundred ninety nine for two terabytes twenty eight hundred twenty seven hundred megabytes second, right? Must have racing stripes on it. So you also said none of that you have a new product. But you had a new announcement. If I remember correctly. What was if I covered all the new news from G tech. In addition to the armory TD portable drive, we have new capacities out. So that fourteen terabyte drive that Western Digital now provides we are going to be fulfilling our products as well. So we're hitting capacities now on our g speed shuttle. Excel for example, it's our eight bay raid system. It's now at one hundred twelve terabytes, and so we're able to just. For storage. And of course, as soon as I added it to my system I'd fill it up team terabyte system. Nasa's me. Yeah. So we're able to accomplish. Giving the storage need for a lot of the big film productions now that are producing insane storage with eight cave type filming. Now, we're giving them that capacity that they needed one system versus having to have twelve different systems stacked up. That's pretty cool. When you think about it? What are you looking at for the future? What are you keeping your eyes on? That's not a product announcement. I'm just

"It's got a twenty sixty which is kind of a high end video card. I doubt that the real advantage of the twenty sixty is at now does Ray tracing. I doubt that the software the blue bio software would be that sophisticated. But if it is it certainly would make a difference looking at their specs. I don't think they need anything that Bansi. A gaming desktop which is nine generation until core. I seven. Yep. Ninety seven hundred K and then two two terabyte of hard drive. Two hundred forty go by the and sixteen of memory of thirty two. I went upgrade that. Yep. The SSD is nice because that's going to make it a lot faster. What's the GP you in that the graphics? It says gee, force RT x twenty seventy graph has very high end more than adequate and it's called liquid cooled with. That's that's I mean, if you can afford it, and I bet you can that's a profitable business. That's very nice system and at night, you can play, you know, games on. That is very high end system. That's nice. Yeah. I put some more ram in it. But otherwise, that's very nice system. Do you have to back up your patients designs? Do we work with the company, which the give us the Southwick who, you know, patient management, okay, everyday stack? So they do off site backup. Okay. Good. Yes. Yes. So the size of the storage is in critical for you. That sounds like more than enough to terabytes. By power familiar with it. They're okay. They're a house brand. I'd I'd rather you went with Dell to be honest look at a comparable system from Dell. Okay. There's nothing wrong with by our? But Dell's going to be I think better a better choice long-term for you. One more question. Yeah. Okay. I have a. Prince an HP officejet printer, which is connected to my PC. Would they USB right? Let he was an action. Right. And you know, and then I lose connection, and I have to basically, we said it. So it it it connect anything that comes to mind you. Yeah. I mean, I would maybe try different cable just to make sure that the cable isn't getting a little flaky. He could be unfortunately windows, sometimes device drivers get unloaded. And you need to use that you need a device driver USB device driver for that printer. And it could be flaky might look and see if you get a updated device driver. Those get regularly updated. You've got HP dot com. You can get an updated device driver. I and it could be something with the printer. That's a little flaky to..

"Hundred dollars and put investor GP us, and they made sixty four gigs of ram cheaper still too expensive. But whatever prices and they reduce the price of a bunch of options. So the I MAC pro is mostly unchanged because a new computer, but they had a bunch of prices and gave you some new options for even faster parts, which is good. Yeah. I mean, especially like the side of it. You know, we've been saying for years like on a product like appropriate like this. And they did the same thing on the fifteen inch. What about two months ago where like on a pro product like this Intel a slow, we know Intel slow to make progress and the as far as I know, I don't think there's any workstation CPU's that. That, you know, the Zeon class that apple could update the I MAC pro too. I think the currency views that have been sold on my pro for the last year and a half. Whatever it's been are still the best Zeon workstation CPU's that until will sell them. So there is no available CPU upgrade, but GPU's change more quickly. And so apple has given us a new GPO option. I don't follow the GP rolled enough to know whether it's a particularly good one or not. But I think people seem to seem to like it. So that's great. That's great news that like they didn't just sit here selling the scene. Ancient GPO does the only options for the entire probably three to four year lifespan of this product. Instead, they gave us a new GPO update like halfway through. That's awesome. And we want them to do more of that. And so far you did on the fifteen inch. They did it on this. That's pretty good. And they reduce the price of the old GP you options. Maybe just the price of a lot of old options. Like how much does it cost to get a two terabyte SSD? They reduced the price on which is practically unheard of like. Existing computer to say yesterday, if you wanted to terabyte SSD would have been six hundred eight hundred bucks, but today at six hundred they almost never do that like it's and it's so weird to see them doing price adjustments on like their most expensive highest margin. I Mak, but I'm all for it. So the pro continues to be really good, computer. Yeah. I man I love this computer so much. I can imagine. If I'm getting a little bit envy me on my two thousand fifteen. But the question that was in back of everybody's mind. Certainly mind the question, I get asked a lot is are these new solid state drives as reliable as spinning drives. They've had an advantage spinning drives for some time in price. You know, you much higher capacity much lower costs per gigabyte. That's starting to evaporate. Solid state. Drives are getting to be close to the cost of spinning drives. They still aren't at the capacity. You can get eight terabytes spinning drives not that. I'd recommend that solid. State drives aren't quite as big and they get they do get very expensive. If you get to the two terabyte solid state drive, but for most people the single terabyte drive in their computer, probably should be solid state because solid state has one huge advantage. It's fast it loads programs at boots up. In seconds instead of minutes. It's it's even faster writing data, but it's fastest reading data. And it's because it's totally random access like your memory. It doesn't have to, you know, find something on a spinning drive. Imagine if. Computers are good. But do you think you could find a speck of data on drives spinning at seven thousand.

They've had an advantage spinning drives for some time in price much higher capacity. Much lower cost per gigabyte. That's starting to evaporate. Solid state. Drives are getting to be close to the cost of spinning drives. They still are at the capacity. You can get eight terabytes spinning drives let that I'd recommend that solid state drives aren't quite as. Big and they get they do get very expensive. If you get to the two terabyte solid state drive, but for most people the single terabyte drive in their computer, probably should be solid state because solid state has one huge advantage. And it's because it's totally random access like your memory. It doesn't have to find something on a spinning drives. Imagine. Computers are good. But do you think you could find a speck of data on a drive spinning at seven thousand revolutions a minute. That's that's not easy. So it's a little easier when you just random access in a drive that has no moving parts for a long time. People said, yeah. But you know, there's an advantage because no moving parts, but there's a disadvantage because we know that the memory cells used in solid state memory, which is they're very similar, in fact, in some cases, identical the memory in your camera, for instance, or your phone. That MOS memory cells have a limited number of read and write cycles, particularly right cycles, and they'll wear out faster. But people have been very clever in designing these SST's. They do something called wear leveling that make sure that no one part of the drive gets more activity than the others. So I I'll put in the show notes an article from back blaze answering this question. How reliable are SSD's, and I'll just give you the bottom line. There's a law, you know, this and that, you know. They hedge their bets a little bit saying, well, it depends what you're going to use it for. But the thing that I think is most interesting to me in the thing. I think most people wanted to know solid, straight drives are as reliable as hard describes unless you're using them in some odd way. So this is the line that I took as the T L DR the bottom line SSD's can be expected to last as long or longer than HDD's spinning hard drives in most general applications, and they said, you should trust the manufacturer's specifications and SSD should ideally last as long as it's manufacturer expects it to last providing you're using it in a kind of a normal way. So this is really good news and answers a question and a lot of people have had people stayed away from solid state drives despite the advantages, the speed improvements because it really can take a computer the feel sluggish and make it lightning-quick turns out this is one of the things that can really slow down a machine. If you can afford, a solid state drive in your computer. There's no reason not to get one. Or at least reliability is not an issue. They are as reliable if not more than your old fashioned spinning grass. And in fact, that's. I've I concluded that a long time ago, and I don't any computer I buy now, I saw his memory. And of course, your phone has solid-state memory and nasty and many, laptops. Don't even come with spending drives anymore. But from now on it's an SSD for me. And then the price differences will really have something to do with the lifespan. But more importantly, the speed of the draft because there are different technologies. Good article though in the back blaze blog, so I'll put a link to that in the show notes and anybody who wants to know a little bit more understand the technology a little bit. More can can look that up at tech guy. Labs dot com. It's good news. Back to the phones we go line three. Diane in Chicago. Hi, diane. How you doing? I'm not you're happy camper today. "I cloud is how much how much is this a lot right? Like ten months, and I've had to get dropbox awfully videos as as so you're something else. They I don't think they ever contemplated. Anybody want more than two terabytes? At that point. You know, when it's a consumer service. It's a year. Now, like, I said, you're not a consumer anymore. Your your enterprise grade baby Dr mom says she uses glacier tobacco personality every night 'cause they're sixty cents a month. But the thing. Yes. Cheap glaciers cheap. I do the same thing. But the good thing to remember is if you have to get the data from glacier, it's going to take they say like five hours. It's it's not like it's gonna take a week. But it's not immediately available and the idea I think as much as anything to discourage you from accessing so glacier, kind of says what it is. It's frozen frozen data. So this is where you have to kind of start. Now you start doing some pencil and paper planning and think about what what how much of this data. Do I need right away. How much now you're how big is your Ness and ask for folks, we're listening wondering what that acronym stands for network attached storage. It's a massive hard drive. That is actually a computer just doesn't have a keyboard mouse and monitor it's on your network, and it off has many terabytes my mind, sinology, Nass and all brand name. We like a lot. I obviously you do too. My sinology has been like ten terabytes much more than my cloud. So that would be another option is to get a second sinology and have them replicate to one to the other. They do that oughta Matty. Two terabyte drives them, and as I was thinking upgrading those or going to five day. So I was another option. Yeah. I use a five bay sinology one of the advantages of analysis typically the massive storage is not on one drive but on multiple drives using raid. And that means if one drive fails, you don't lose data can rebuild itself. It's got redundancy built in with a five drive sinology. I actually have I think all two terabyte drives in there and raid typically takes you know, one. Dr Ray takes maybe a third of that you can do to drive rate, which means up to two drives can fail simultaneously, then your data's super-safe. But again, if it's on premises the real risk is of fire or theft or something everything's gone. So he do need off site. So the five bailout swamp dried, so I can have one in car. I used to. No, yeah. No, those that's an array the all go together, you can take that drive out. But you need to put another drive in. And then it's going to go through a period of rebuilding. It's not like, oh, hey, let me just take one of them with me. No. It's not designed for. No. Yeah. I think that you get the outline of what you need to do. I would say that. Probably I cloud is not 'economics for you. If you're storing that much up there, and obviously it's not big enough for you, your Nasr's, your friend because you can get massive storage on Nasr's. If you have a five Dr nast, and you have to terabyte drives in there. You're gonna get maybe a little more than eight terabytes of storage. That's probably enough even for you. What do you have a terabyte per kid? What's going on? Well, we've got all the movies. I move them over in your store in movies nowadays. Maybe less economical to rip your movies. Just watch him stream watch them on the on the internet at that's a lot of people. Doing that. Leo LaPorte, the tech guy state will time out or because coming up right after this. "Yeah. Get him. Amac, don't get them. Well, you have a hard dry, but it's small. Yeah. If he's in the video and photography. Oh, there's just no question. Get a MAC book. And I think these new macbook airs are great. You're gonna wanna get him a big enough hard-drive that can put movies and photos on it. A lot of people look at the macbook air and say, oh, low-powered chip and stuff. I had a have both a MAC book pro with the I nine state of the art thirty two gigs. Aram two terabyte hard drive, very expensive laptop. And I have a MAC book air also both of them, you know, the latest models, and I use a MAC here all the time because it's light. And it's fast enough. It does everything I wanted to even find for togr Affi video editing and be little sluggish. But it's still work. I think MAC book air, and it's so just portable in light. I really liked the MAC book air, I think that's a great student laptop. That's it. How many what kind of storage like five twelve or twelve probably enough gets expensive? I, you know, a terabyte would be better for him. If he's if he's doing a lot of photography. You know, video and pictures take up space. The years are are a little bit more affordable than the macbook pros. The other possibility if you're going to be in China, you get a great deal on that tops in China. Like, a wild way would be they while way makes a very nice win. It's windows ten, but a very nice laptop that a lot of people say this should have been the MAC book air, but you know, give them a MAC book. Around. Yeah. Yeah. Back. That's I think that's a that's a very nice thing for you to do for them. Okay. Well, thank you very much for your time. Yeah. My pleasure. Congratulations. Obviously you've got a ambitious and intelligent child. How is it that he's been studying Chinese since kindergarten that must have been you? I don't know. I they they had it into Garton, you know. And so he just that's awesome school. And can he right? You're right. Because that's the hardest thing the language is actually surprisingly easy. What if you can do tones? If you have, you know, somewhat musical ability, and you can do the tones. That's the only hard part language itself as much as one of these his languages ever. But the writing is the hardest of any language in the world sane, and, but if you start young, you know, you'd probably be pretty competent at it. I think so you know, what he went to his high school. They he was. We were kind of looking at different high schools, and the the the Chinese instructor there. He said can you, you know, right? And you know, my son gets he gave my son brush, my, you know, they writing word. That's the Ray. Yeah. No kidding. That's re any must have a good hand to because it's very hard because you have to hold the pen in a certain way. It's not a natural thing for westerners. All oh, that's awesome. Good for him. He's going to have a good future. Apparently best buy right now has a sales on the MAC book air. So check that two hundred bucks off check best. Yeah. That's great. Thank you is that your son..

"And it just keeps going where we're seeing these subscriptions in the works in lots of different places, which makes us come back to that question. What are these? What is the subscription is this the apple one master subscription because nobody and this thing is there will absolutely undeniably be subscription bundles because there's no way I like ninety nine percent. I'm going to say here confidence that I have that apple is going to say, oh, would you like to subscribe to our services? You can subscribe to apple music. You can subscribe to apple video. You can subscribe to cloud. You can subscribe to apple news magazines. You can subscribe to Apple's gaming whatever it is. You get like how much confusion is there? If they have like. Ten different subscription products. Bentley as well. There is a financial incentive to apple to bundle this because they're paying credit card processing fee for every single one of the transient. Right. So they don't want you to subscribe to six different bundles, if they have them like six different services, they want you to subscribe to it once because they'll probably meant money that way. Yeah. So some combination of now they might offer as you said they might offer some of these separately. Yeah. I think the high valley, you ones music and video they will they will offer them on their own. Yeah. But everything else that we've been talking about even including cloud, these like Adams, these these niceties they gotta add a brand name and say, this is what you get. And you get I cloud storage, and you get and it's one of those things whereas as somebody paying for two terabyte, I cloud account. I'm kind of anticipation that some of these services. I'm just going to get them like that. I'm already paying them a monthly fee all of that storage. I have this suspicion, maybe they'll change the price. But this assertion. That they're just going to say, you know, those are the the I cloud account things are going to be turned into a larger bundle of stuff. That includes your backup in your photos because those are services to if you think about it like Bo backup, even though we all say, I cloud storage backup and photos are really two different services that they've bundled together. Really they could have separated them they chose not to and then you throw in some more, and you've got multiple use cases already going on here. And that that to me feels like a more likely scenario that they're not gonna offer again whole different sets of subscription bundles for different things, and you which four bundles do you wanna buy that's also too confusing? So yeah, it'll be interesting to see how they do it. Feels like this year is going to be fascinating year tomorrow as we record this Tuesday, January twenty ninth is apple results for that holiday quarter. The where they where they misses us. Two core cast. Well, the disaster quarter, which will still probably be the second largest quarter effort. It doesn't matter. It's a disaster. It is because we all know now, we know this having spoken about this. So many times the the the pew amount of money is important to all patients yet to gain the played the money is important. It's it's growth this'll be the quarter that they missed expectations. Yeah. They're gonna show a year-over-year decline in revenue. They're presumably gonna show a year over year decline in I phone the dramatic. They'll have more detail that we haven't heard yet. There's probably going to make make people depending on what they're looking at even more concerned about aspects of their business, and like a lot of us. It will make a breakout of our is when they when they start talking about headwinds, and all that kind of stuff is going to be a lot of this. And this is the quarter where they're going to stop reporting unit sales. So we won't get any unit sales. So there's going to be more residual grousing about that. So it's going to be really interesting. So what I'm saying is check back in two. Hundred and thirty one of the upgrade program where we will discuss the fallout of that because this is all interrelated, and it's kind of fascinating. And and we'll see we'll see what happens next, but we'll find out a lot more tomorrow. My bold prediction in Jason is we're not gonna get any specific details..

"Everything for that fixed price like apple music, that makes sense the iphone plan, I wouldn't expect that to be like the two terabyte planned. I would expect whatever like the base one is is that one hundred gigs or something like that whatever the base one is that would be the one, that's probably included. And then if you want a bigger one you pay a little bit more per month. And I wouldn't I think to the hardware like you. You seem like you. Don't get the best iphone for the base price your price varies depending on the iphone you choose. Right. And how. Pensive that is. So I think it would be like that. But it's still you're still getting a lot for one price that you just build into your budget. And it just oh, yeah. I pay sixty bucks a month for my iphone and the things around it or whatever the cost is. John what all affect up the most? I'm going to actually take the boring answer. Because that's probably the actual answer is which is the what the new iphone is. And the main reason it's a it's a big deal in the upcoming year is because we we're just coming off this, you know, this change in guidance about earnings, and then we're going to see the we're going to get the second impact of that story when the actual earnings come out the ones they warned us about right? Even though it's the same story, right? Unless there's some dramatic difference. Like, oh, we weren't you. But it turns out everything's great. After all, it's probably not going to be you know, they warned us mean it's going to be bad. All right. So this next phone is super important. And the main reason I've been thinking about this phone is well, two reasons one like we talked many reasons about why phone sales might be down and all sorts of China issues, or whatever, but there are other ancillary things in addition to like the battery replacement program and one one of the things that giant bucket of things that probably didn't help phone sales is the fact that the whole phone line changed over to the ten style. And some people may be wary about that. Because it's not what they're used to. Like, we all did that transition already and we're fine with it. But early adopters everyone else maybe less so the next one of those that's coming along. Well, first of all presumably that's going to continue in, you know, I don't think the home button coming back. So then they ones are all going to be like that. And now there's the rumor of USB see floating around. Again, we talked about this couple years ago. It will continue to talk about until they do it or until they lose connectors entirely. If they did that this year like this is kind of it's not a maker break phone, but it's more important phone than normal because it may be a new form factor. So there's a lot of question marks around that in may avenue connector, and it's kind of important for this phone to do better. They need the story for twenty nineteen needs to be better than the story. We're about to have for their winnings on the tennis in the ten art everything. Like, however things worked out and whoever's fault, it is or whatever the pressure is on. And so I think because the phone is most of their money, and it's their flagship product, and this is a very important year. And it's year when potentially many things could be changing that's going to affect them the most. But then that is the boring answer. But I think it's the answer..

"I think one of the smartest things here is you can set a quota so say that you have a a two terabyte drive dedicated to, you know, time machine dry backups, and I've got to users. I can have a quota for one terabyte each and when they set up time machine on their laptop it just shows up as a terabyte worth of storage. And so they're not going to have one user overfill the drive, and the others are not able to do a whole backup you can segment it out and make sure everyone has an appropriate amount of storage that is super helpful and really useful. If you're doing this for for multiple users. You know, if it's just your laptop onto your server who cares. But if you've got kids running around with notebooks or a spouse or roommate or something it can really save you a lot of headache down the road when your time. Volume is full and people can't back up. And or you have to add somebody down the road. It's like, oh, no. What do I do this sort of segmentation you could do in here can really save your bacon in a couple of points on this number one? Is this is an excellent use case to buy a cheap spinning drive. You know, you can get definitely like I think on Amazon you can get a five terabytes spinning dry for like one hundred and fifty dollars. And then the second thing is this is one of the things where we I think benefited from the demise of Makhala server because this is baked into the operating system now like you don't necessarily need to go buy a MAC mini to do this. If you've got an I MAC that's running twenty four seven or even if you've got that laptop that you never unplug. This is something you could use with any MAC in your house. Absolutely. It's it's a you just plug it in there. You have it under the desk and forget about it. It's really really sweet. But if it's not there when the laptops look for it, that's a problem. So you really want to you really want to have something. That's. All the time. Yeah. Absolutely. It's a great point. What about? Content. Caching, you know. Yeah. This is sort of a strange one. It's it's one that apple doesn't have. There's a lot of explanation in the MAC OS preference pane stuff of what this is or what it does. But if you an able this basically what it's doing is apple at the MAC will use however much storage space you allow it and again, you can set a default amount here. So it doesn't have to overrun your whole driving and say, hey, just us, you know, half a terabyte for this. What is going to do is apple is going to use that space to store temporary files that that systems on your network may need? So a good example of this is a new software update comes out for the MAC, and if you have content caching turn on that will download it. And we'll make that file available to the other max on the local network. So you're not going out over. Your internet service provider three times to run the same update on three Mex content caching is to reduce that band with usage..

"How's it going? It's great. How are you? Okay. Thanks for asking. Thought to touch base with you back in November November fifteen I ordered the new MAC book pro with the Intel chipset Vega twenty nine processor. And it took about two weeks to get it in and actually hooked up to an external monitor the USB type c to HDMI and got flickering on the MAC book display system had was maxed out of the thirty two gigabytes of ram I put a terabyte of flash in there. And then upgraded it to the Vega twenty and the whole thing co- computer with a student discount was around forty two hundred holy moly. I have that computer. The only thing I didn't do is put a terabyte hard drive in their two terabyte hard drive. I got the same computer and never have any flickering the flickering is I would say take it to apple. That's not right. Yeah. So here's the bottom line. We try troubleshooting and on the machine switching adapters changing external monitors. I thought it may be a grounding issue with the room beside the office. It has to dehumidifiers that run, but actually ran a power along extension cable downstairs kitchen upstairs. We're still getting flickering issue. So I sent the computer back good and wait till it waited till I got the money and then reordered exact same specs. Now, if you go to YouTube and type in I nine bega VGA twenty MAC book, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. It'll be the first one to pull up is this your video or somebody else's liquor. It's mine I nine Vega. Twenty MAC book. And actually when they either replace when he came in on Christmas Eve, and guess what happened when hooked up to the external display was it flickering. Guessing on the MAC have you. Let me just ask real quick. Have you tried it with other external displays just to make sure it's not that display? Yes. Okay. External display external dafter at everything running through it Furman power conditioner. Like I said at ran extension cables see whether or not it's a circuitry in my stairs. Rumors forum, you'll see that. Now, it looks like a guy started a poll and there's around. Sixty total submissions, and at least fifty percent of the computers are being recorded while I sit by the way, I'm looking at your video, and the flicker is not constant. It's every once in a while it will flicker terminate which makes it work. Yeah. Yeah. That's interesting. And it doesn't it doesn't do that. When you're not hooked up to the external monitor just when you are. Oh, yes. It does. And I also try it does it when you're not hooked say again, it it does it even if you're not hooked up to an external monitor. Okay. Well, that's yeah. We need to you need to call. Apple you need to call. Apple. That's all I have. And what do they say we-? Well, I've been online with a first here in the second tier, and they have no clue, but that doesn't matter that doesn't matter. They need. That's broken. That's not right. They need to fix it. If it's flickering, even if you don't have anything external hooked up to it. And it's still flickering. It's broken. That's they need that. They had me the first thing he had me do is upgrade Mojave to think the ones that were shipped out. Walks. Look, they're gonna walk you through all sorts of junk because they want to make sure it's not something you're doing the machine, but you've had two of them in a row now that have done the same thing. It's clearly a flaw. It sounds like based on what you told me that it's a common flaw. I didn't I'm thrilled. I don't have that problem. But don't try to fix this yourself. If you're if there's an apple store anywhere near you, the first thing I would do. Yeah. I'm sure there is you're in Charlotte. The first thing I would do is bring into an apple store. Make with a genius bringing in turn it on and show him and say fix this. I want a new one this is my second. And you keep getting new ones at no charge to you. You keep getting new ones until it doesn't do that. It's it's messed up. It's broken. And I I appreciate your desire to fix it yourself. But it's pretty clear, and I've seen I have to say if you follow the MAC book read, it sub read it. A lot of video problems with these. I now feel fortunate that I didn't have this problem. I have that almost exact same system. Actually, I don't have the new Vega twenty. I have the original. Discreet, GP you that they shipped with the I nine, but it's it's clearly an issue. The it's an issue that they have to fix and the whole, you know, reset the system management controller reset and v ram reinstall Mojave all that stuff that you know, anytime you come to a computer company with a problem with their system. They're going to eliminate all of the software issues. I to make sure it's really a physical hardware problem. This strikes me as a real physical hardware problem. And they need to make a good. Nutty? I'm looking at your video that would drive me nuts. We have the chat rooms feeding me a lot of threads. Mac book pro Vega. Twenty screen. Flickers? Sounds like it's an issue with that GPA. You. But think replacement that's you know, that's clearly an issue. That's where it's broken. That's broken get fixed. And it's too bad. It sounds like apples having a hard time making these reliably. No, no, computer company makes perfect systems. You know, you're going to have some percentage of systems that have problems. And if you have a problem with the system, especially if it's fresh out of the box. And this problem happens you get an get don't waste time. Make sure it's under warranty, and you get it back and say give me a new one the nice thing about the apple stores. You can bring it to the genius. And show them. It's pretty hard for them to say. Well, I know. No. Is it your power play? They they're gonna see and say, yeah, that's unacceptable. It's unacceptable. And they need to fix it. And I'm just glad I don't have. I have a macbook pro with the I nine it's been very reliable. But it sounds like I won the lottery because it sounds like a lot of people are having these problems. Some people say chrome was doing it. Yeah. I've seen the flickering from chrome. That's not what this is. Is it chrome disabled hardware acceleration and chrome somebody saying and in the apple forums. But that would be weird. The chrome tweak, which is to go to chrome preferences advanced system, turn off use hardware acceleration. When available seems to flicker it, and this is not just in the chrome, fix it fix the flicker. It's not just in the chrome window. It's the whole screen. Although wait a minute. I see you're in this forum. I see I see your post. And. Did. So I I presume you tried turning off the acceleration, right? Yes. Even using chrome. I use Firefox cts. Yeah. I see that in your post here in the in the in the thread. So you don't have to take, you know, make sure you don't have chrome on there. I think I think this is it's interesting because a number of people say the chrome tweak helped, but that's clearly not your issue. And I, you know, I don't I see no reason why apple shouldn't fix this for you. This is their problem. Right. You've had two of them that did this. Yeah. What I did was ordered yesterday after I get my money back ordered to thirteen point three and just soup it up. Yeah. And I know it will only sixteen gigs of ram in it, but still have a quad core. And so I think what I'm doing at least I know that that's. It'd be reliable. It's a shame. I mean, you know, apple has this reputation as being you know, magical, and their hardware is magical, but they're going to have problems with hardware. In fact, there's been times when they've had lots of problems with hardware. So. You know, if you see something like this. They're not magical their company bring it back. I thank you for the call. I'm sorry. You're having those problems are showed that they brought to you by twenty three and me new year new you let's make.

First thing you want to do is take pictures of your papers, the easiest and cheapest way is to use your camera app. Sust nap photos of documents and photos, you could start with your camera app on your smartphone. Now, what do we do hard-drive that is the cheapest and easiest option the problem with the traditional drive is that they will eventually fail. But a good alternative is the newer solid state drive, which has no moving parts, you can get a five hundred gig drive around one hundred bucks. I is one hundred dollars four four terabyte model that would be four thousand gigs. You could also use a USB drive. Those obviously do not have as much storage. But I think there are a little bit more reliable because they don't have any moving parts either. You can pick up a two hundred and fifty six gigabyte drive around fifty bucks. Now, the best and most reliable backup would be online backup. Google dropbox. Microsoft's one drive in Apple's I cloud or the most popular tools for packing backing up. Our stuff. Apple is only for photos videos. The others can include papers and other documents. The rates are all over the map.
