Scotland's leader vows to push for second independence vote
"Party has today set out how it plans to secure a new referendum on Scottish independence from the United Kingdom. The Scottish National Party, or SMP, says it will try to hold a referendum if it went the majority in this year's elections to the Scottish parliament. The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has made clear his opposition to another vote. The last referendum was in 2014 when 55% voted no to independence. Paul Hutchins, political editor of Scotland's Daily Record newspaper, will the SNP leader Nicholas Sturgeon be able to secure that second referendum. If you look at what they are plan ears, it is to get a joint agreement with the U. K government on a referendum on scorching depends, which is what happened back in 2000 and 14. But this time around Tory government in London has decided that it will not grant what's known as the section 30 order, which is effectively a joint agreement, so that's put the S and P in a difficult position, so they come up with a plan B, which is to organize their own referendum at the Scottish parliament. The big issue. There is whether or not that is legal. And while there's no doubt that they will probably go down that road is going to end up in the courts, so the question of whether there will be a referendum is probably will be decided by judges. Would unionist parties in Scotland go along with the referendum that hadn't been sanctioned by Westminster? Well, that is the key issue here. I think there's a big distinction to be drawn between whether Scotch Parliament can legally organize a referendum on the legitimacy of such a process. So even if the Scottish Parliament did push ahead with our and judges To say that it was legal. I think that be question Marks Reese because first is this court's conservatives who are pro union. They've already said they would boy court such a referendum on so you could be left for the situation where you have a referendum, but one side is just not taking part. And then you end up with the result could be C 18 90% fever of independence on internationally just looks quite amateurish. So I think that ultimately what you need is a process that is agreed by both sides on as we speak to snow and agreement on that looks quite far off. In the last independence referendum you mentioned there was a pretty large margin 10% in favor of Scott, the remaining part of the United Kingdom has that shifted dramatically in the last six years. There's no doubt that in the last couple of years their husband a shift in favor of independence. I think that around the last 20 opinion polls on independence surely lead for independence. So I said quite dramatic turnaround. From 2014, and I think there's a few reasons for that. One is Brexit as you well know, People school rejected Brexit when there was a referendum on that subject. There's also no doubt that the conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is hugely unpopular. In Scotland, and I think that is partly responsible for the shift in public opinion. There's also a perception that Nicolas Sturgeon has handled the pandemic better and Boris Johnson has. I think it's a combination of a wussy factors as resulted in the increase in independence with the last couple years. And yet, I suppose in the back of people's minds is is the worry that actually, if membership of the European Union was driving things, there's no guarantee is there a tool that Scotland could quickly rejoined the U. Well, Brexit is the degree imponderable off this to beat. On the one hand, there's no doubt that is driving increased support for independence, but it does re some issues for the pro independence state. After was a referendum there's MP would liken depends got to rejoin the U. So you have the issue of? Well, how long would that teak and then even if an independent school and did join the European Union? What would that mean for things like Borders on immigration and cite the United Kingdom of what would it mean in terms of trade between Scotland and the rest of the Yuki? So I think that you would see a very different referendum. If we lose to tea, please, with a different set of questions raised. That was poor Hussian of Scotland's Daily record newspaper.

Biden signs executive orders addressing the economy
"Biden has turned to executive orders in his first days of office says he looks to address the economic crisis brought on by the pandemic. He's also pursuing a massive coronavirus aid bill Can Walsh White House and political analyst for U. S. News and World Report joined w. T. O. P S John Aaron to break down Biden's first few days in office and some of the past presidents he resembles well particular FDR going back a long way to 1933 when he first became president. He had a huge depression to deal with the worst economic calamity we've ever had, and his philosophy was similar to what Biden seems to be doing action action action. The country wanted the president to do something to act boldly. And you seeing that with President Biden again today with executive orders. They're going to continue indefinitely pushing this $1.9 trillion stimulus bill moving to try many different things to get the economy corrected, but mostly to get the coronavirus under control and to get the vaccines out. That's his first priority right now. And probably should be given how difficult that issue is for people to deal with very quickly on Lyndon Johnson. Of course, he took over after President Kennedy was assassinated. He also wanted to show action himself, particularly in areas of diversity and racial justice with writing is also doing so. I would say those two presidents come to mind and you see a lot of echoes in what Biden is doing when you compare them to Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson. The president, of course pitches himself is a compromise or experienced in the Senate. But we're hearing that some Republicans say there's no way they're gonna go for some of the elements and at one point trillion $1.9 trillion.8 bills. So where does this go? I think the thing we have to remember here, of course, is that this is vital opening bid in his attempt to get a lot of this legislation through. He's been around a long time. 36 years in the Senate years as vice president, he is known as a guy who knows how the Congress works. And so I think we have to realize that this is his the start of the neck. Negotiations started the deal making there are not good signs from the Republicans that they'll go along with him. There's a lot of pushback of the same time he's getting the sense from the left on his in his party to push further in government activism, and so on, So it is a difficult line. He's walking here, but I think That there's the potential particularly initially here that he will come to some kind of a compromise. It'll be difficult, but what he's got out there now is sort of the whistle ist. I think when he gets to the real bargaining, I think he's gonna have to borrow back off from a lot of that. But I think it's possible

"Seven two two two. Take a trip back with this week's rock almanac. What's going on rock and roll lovers? It's Andy west here to take you on a trip back to this week in rock and roll history. But start back in one thousand nine hundred sixty four for the Supremes became the first all girl group to have a UK number one single when baby love went to the top of the charts written and produced by Motown's main production team, Holland Dozier Holland. It was also the second of five supreme songs in a row to go to number one in the United States this week in one thousand nine hundred sixty nine James Brown drags his road weary band into king studios in Cincinnati where CLYDE Stubblefield starts banging out of drum patterns Brown. Makes it the basis of a song, which he calls funky drummer. It's a minor hit for becomes one of the most use samples in hip. Hop history. This week in one thousand nine hundred seventy three Led Zeppelin began recording demos of their new album, physical graffiti, including a new song entitled driving to Kashmir. We know it today just as Kashmir. Jumping ahead this week in nineteen ninety the National Academy of Recording Arts and sciences strips the nineteen Eighty-nine best new artist Grammy from newly vanilla because rob palatis and fabry's Morvan didn't actually sing on their debut album. It's the first time a Grammy has ever been revoked and this week in two thousand three after returning to his home Neverland ranch following a raid on it a few days before and in response to an arrest warrant, Michael Jackson is charged with child molestation and Santa Barbara, California. The singers immediately released after posting three million dollars bail. There's your look.

"But meanwhile, everything we'll just start to route around it is the recovery, designing the agent on the client side to be aware and to do some act and say, did you receive my last packet of data? Was it fully re received and how recover from the process of the agent sending to the queuing system and then a failure occurring at the queuing layer. We'd have to pull it back out of the queuing layer. So if a note is lost irretrievably, then you know that one or two seconds of data that was in that head already being acknowledged by that queuing layer, but not yet delivered on that data would be at risk. And we've, we've thought about building redundancy of that layer. But the truth is that a hard failure like that is so rare. And when you multiply. You start to look at the kind of number of nine of data retention. The you know that you still have there is just it just hasn't been a concern for us. Those just built on like regular old c. two nodes or using. Okay. Okay. Yeah. And our experiences at the meantime between heart failure of an EC two node is is measured in a significant number of years. And so you know, it turns into eight or nine, nine, reliability, and you. If you divide that into the, you know, one or two second window where data's is captive in that note because as because you're actually writing those logs to disk on on that note. Yep, Yep. SSD. Right, right. Okay. So you write them to disk and then even if the machine restarts it's not problematic. It would only be problematic if the disc completely failed. Exactly. Yes. So you know, it's just an example of, you know, trying to be very thoughtful about the know reliability is important, but nine nine is probably sufficient and sometimes something that's sort of theoretically wait, you're only starring one. Copy of that data, but well, we're only storing it. It's only sitting there for about one second. So you know if you take a careful look at the, you know, sort of the engineering trade-offs, then sometimes you can. You can get away with things in a particular situation that you know in other contexts might not be as good idea. And then I was looking at your architecture diagrams. I think the next phase in the log processing pipeline is that it goes from the q. to and it gets written to two separate backing stores. Is that right? That's right. So technically three often we only talk about too. So we, we still, we goes to three backing stores, two of which are sort of high-powered nodes with SSD's. Currently, we're using I three for extra large EC two instances. Those do all the work, they responsible for queries and so forth. We took two copies is enough for, you know, kind of processing and normal healthy mode operation. But you know, to make sure that the data is is very durable. We wanted to have a third copy on e. b. s.. And so that's what that third copy is. We often gloss over the third copy because the performance and cost performance is not good enough for us to use that. Inquiries of that third copy is just sort of for emergency purposes isn't interesting to most of the system, but it does exist. How much cheaper is e b s than SSD if you look at the price per gigabyte of EIB versus take something like an I three or four extra large node, and when you consider the full cost of that node, it's a lot higher. Now you're getting a lot. You're forgetting a lot of processor and ram and so forth. But you know, basically we would rather arrange our SSD nodes in pairs rather than in triples because it's a that gives the doing them in pairs, gives us a better ratio of processing and ram to storage. I guess I'm having trouble understanding. So you have to the architecture is for the main replica set the replicas of yours, like you want three copies of the law. Data, like the source of truth data, the customer data, like this is your business, so you need three of them and you have two of them on SSD's the two main copies than you your periodically writing to the third copy so that you have a fail over in extreme cases that didn't quite understand what you're saying about you like to keep the SSD's in pairs because of processing something. You'll basically every bite of FD storage comes with a lot of ram and processor attached, and so- storing three copies on SSD means we need.

"In two seconds. Sorry. No worries. What should I do right now with my life. The life. That's we're all vote. Another beer. I got some. Stuff to do. Soda dot com. You're listening to science, sorta. You're listening to episode two hundred ninety one. This was originally two hundred ninety, but issues came up and we're going to be talking about not about those issues, but about issues of things that are science and things that are sort of science and things that wish they were science all around the theme of getting to the root of it all with me now to talk about all that stuff is the erstwhile Joe, hey, everybody and the stalwart Matt pillow. Pillow. Matt's for those of you who are not fully caught up on the backlog is the host of the indefens- of plants podcast, a sister podcast to this show, and he comes on here science, sorta from time to time when we find a plant topic, so obscure so worthless that it might not. It's not even worth its own defensive plants episode. We have to tackle it here. Nice. I wouldn't say it's useless. It's just generally we just cover very different kinds of avenues of science, but it works. This is an exciting topic to cover, so. Okay. So I found a. For a little behind the scenes. The way a topic usually makes it to the show is I kind of have feelers out across the internet with various organizations that have a members of our newsletters. I've signed up for just kind of paying attention to what's going on in the news. And if I see a story that I think is potentially a good topic for the show, but outside of my area of expertise, like if I see a paleontology story, I could tell if that's a good story or not, but for things far outside my expertise, I usually pitch it to our stable of cohorts who are more of an expert in that thing. And I kind of just ask them like, hey, is this a thing is the thing you're interested in is the thing we're talking about, and then they'll come back and Ben gets the the butt of most of that just because physics is the furthest from what I understand it. So it's hard for me to tell if thing is the thing. Plus, you know, archive papers get publicized a lot every once in a while and they're even if they're not a thing. So in this edition of, is this a thing I saw a story from US which is a little news publication put out by the American geophysical union, and it was about route models so better data at the root of ecosystem models, and it's about a updated version of what's called the fine route ecology database or Fred, which is delightful. Nice him. It is a great..

Larry hi Larry I have a point okay before we. Look at these people that fall from very high positions and are maybe inadequately. Sentenced okay those are not the kind of, cases they threatened society I can give. You two names in New York Brandis Gonzalez. And Djamil Jones one punch killers that are. Looking, at probation nine months in jail and and possible impossible one year misdemeanor charge for. Each one and by, the way that's not good either Larry but don't you think it's bad when you got the DA who's exposing confidential. Clients these are the, informants the people who have the guts to come. Forward and they never want to be named. Because they're always at risk. Of course. It's bad. But that doesn't make me afraid. To walk out this guy, fell from a very high position his punishment is his. Disgrace okay I just stopped there with. Larry his punishment is his. Disgrace That's what was said every time they took out somebody who is involved with insider trader information on Wall Street or selling. Junk bonds, Milkin Polski we can go. Right down the line they said. All, the disgrace was enough. You, shouldn't put him in jail Larry it's a double standard well the. White collar guys that are not an. Official positions have not so The white? Collar guys I understand but they will never, work again and I don't feel so what that's easy that's not. Re- that's not the. Reason Larry they should get a slap on the wrist shame shame is not enough if he was you were me you know you'd be behind bars Larry up. But why, are you focusing on the. Things that that danger society because. Because, tipping confidential informants does. Endanger, society because guess what other confidential informants are not gonna wanna come. Forward Fine. Case we're going to be repeated, you must, love being a contrarian you must, love me you can't really believe this I want to know why? You're not talking about these local cases that's, what I want because there's a lot of cases to talk about Oh Let's go to Kim from New, Jersey. Kim go. Ahead you're here with Curtis and. Rita go, ahead. Kim Hi I was just wondering nearby performance died? Not that we know of but you know what, that does happen when informants are, revealed and guess what you can bet? That, they, are scared as heck especially if they're like gang informants, you. Think they. Feel safe walking around well Kim. It's not only Taking? Care, of, them or anything Well kim I want to, come? Forward right it's not. Being killed often times all of a sudden you're a. Confidential informant so you're in, the pipeline you giving really. Valuable information and often times they're not even going to give you, a pizza did just not gonna deal with. You anymore, some now the county loses a valuable way of figuring out house Fenton all coming into our county heroin coming into. Our, county Thing to worry about. Their families too because guess what suddenly if if your. Brother Bob is a snitch, guess what you're looking over your shoulder too which is no doubt about it and Kim the, ramifications and imagine if you gave up a. Confidential informant, let's say you were a criminal and you publicize to a confidential informant were be you'd be looking at time yeah All of a. Sudden you're the district attorney the shot calling they, say well we don't want you to create a problem for the whole criminal Justice system flap on just tossed. You Contention Curtis that that isn't even more. Serious because the boss that. Is that's. Unbelievable and? He. Should have been made an example of as opposed to a, slap on the wrist let's go to Jose in Paterson New Jersey welcome the Kurdish kospi here WABC Jose Jose high yeah when you, compare the district, attorney received the doctor is here but the scientists that priests and bishops did not receive for raping little boys. And protect seems that these people are overly prostitutes actually by the way say that's an. Interesting way, to we all these points together because we just had Bill Donahue, on and listen there, are a lot, of people who are, walking around free and should. Be held accountable you see that's why often. Times you say it's dependent on who you are not what you did but it again it's positions of authority and that's why, I ventured, those people should be given even more right and how many, times did, some, Bishop or some cardinal or somebody who could have done an intervention and made a difference said you know If we acknowledge, this then all of, a sudden everyone, is going to think, that all of us a. Pedophile says sexual assault is so let's just. Keep this on the hush-hush mush mush and look at the problem that has resulted from that that's why they need Bill Donahue, in there Go after them He took on he's taken, on all challenges but it's it's a losing battle, because just look you go to church on a Sunday if not for the legal aliens said a lot, of these parachutes nobody. Obey their well. That's the thing and so many, people are saying well because the there's so much bad publicity. About the church they gotta get a handle on it and bring Justice..

Big deal, because just because the unit's been, sitting around for so long while we, were using the heater and sometimes that right. Off the bat noise isn't too big of, a deal but if it continues its it warrants phone call, to have somebody come out and check it because you.
