Why Schools Should BAN Cell Phones With Jonathan Haidt
"Jonathan, who disagree? Now, I after I first highlighted your article, I got a number of people saying the problem is that that parents want their kids to have phones and they won't allow schools to ban them. Would you respond to that, please? Yes. So that is true. That is the problem is that many parents object. Now, let's start from the beginning here. Talk to teachers. The teacher is almost 100 percent. The teachers are horrified by what's happening. It falls on them to be the phone police. So the teachers all want the phones out of school. They don't see any benefit. They see the devastation to learning and social life. So so there's a desire to get them out. And I asked the principals at my two schools, why don't you just tell kids to lock up their phones in the morning? What you know, why can't we just put them in phone lockers? They said, oh, you know, parents get upset. And nowadays, especially, oh, parents get upset because they think, well, what if there's a school shooting? I need to get in touch with my child all the time. I need to be able to text them while they're in class. I need to be in touch. So that right there is actually part of the problem is kids need that's healthier for them to have a lot more independence. But I understand the fear about school shootings. We live in a country in which this happens horrifically. And all of us as parents, we are attuned to any threat, no matter how small it is. You can't say to people, oh, it's just tiny. But here's the thing I would like parents to think about. Let's imagine the worst happens. Let's imagine that there is a shooter in your child's school. Now, let's imagine there's two different schools your kid could be in. In one school, everyone's got a phone. And so as soon as they call lockdown, as soon as they say something wrong, everyone pulls out their phone, everyone's calling their parents. Everyone is communicating with their parents. The parents are all rushing to school, OK, in the cars. So that's school one. School two, nobody has a phone except for the teachers and the principals. And so they're coordinating what to do, and the kids are paying attention and doing what they're supposed to do. Which school is the safer one? Which school is the one that's more likely to get through it with fewer injuries? I don't see any benefit to having kids having phones in school.

A highlight from LGM Podcast: Talking Football with Rich Brooks
"The football isn't going to change it because the mighty dollar is doing it all. The greed and, you know, let's face it, players are getting paid, coaches are making exorbitant salaries that make no sense, really, that make no sense. This is the Lawyers, Guns and Money podcast. Hello and welcome to the Lawyers, Guns and Money podcast. My name is Rob Farley. Here with me is my colleague Eric Loomis. Eric and I have the tremendous honor to have as a guest on this Guns and Money podcast, Coach Rich Brooks. His biography is long, but it involves being the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats. It involves being the head coach of the St. Louis Rams, and most notably for us, the head coach of our beloved Oregon Ducks. Sir, it is a tremendous honor to have you here with us this afternoon. It's a pleasure to be with you. I wanted to start just by asking, I know that you live back in Oregon, and I hope that your place is safe from the fires. We have had a lot of smoke. I have a son that lives up the McKenzie River about 25 miles, and his house burned down in the fires two years ago, and the fires are close to his house again, but the good news is he can't get to it because everything else is burned around it, but it's been pretty smoky, and the wind has changed, and it should be a good day for Oregon football on Saturday when they open, as long as the wind continues from the north or the west. Well, let's hope so, and you know, part of the reason that we wanted to talk to you is this is such a transformative moment in college football right now. I mean, you of course coached Oregon for 17 years. You also played at Oregon State, and the fate of those two schools in the current conference realignment has differed, and Oregon and Oregon State, after playing against each other for over a century, all of a sudden that may not happen anymore, and I'm wondering from your perspective, what your thoughts are about realignment and the ways in which it's affecting these two schools that mean so much to you? Well, you know, people don't remember, but when I went to play at Oregon State, graduated Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley, California in 1959, and played freshman football that year, and then varsity football 60 -61 -62, and had the pleasure of playing on a pretty good team with Terry Baker, who won the first Heisman Trophy west of the Mississippi, but in those days, Oregon State was independent. It was not part of the PAC -8 at that time. The league broke up over money.

Jeff James: Bad Guys Do Surveillance of Targeted School Violence
"Jeff some practical things When you're consulting in this targeted school violence space what are some practical things people can do You know I've thrown some out in the past It's probably a good idea to get together with your local police department If you haven't already at the school you get blueprints of the school out there so police officers you have seen it have walked through it They're not guessing when they show up What are some things you're telling principles and parents Well the first thing I tell anybody I consult with is you need to get rid of the mindset that it can't happen here It is a dangerous immune responsible mindset And I still have people Dan is harder to believe that who say that to me today And if you go to a school board meeting and you hear a school board member or an administrator your kids school say something like that you need to vote them out of office Next turnaround because look the bad guys do surveillance and we saw that yesterday that this person did surveillance of those two schools and passed on the one that she knew they had security just to go to this one because it was a softer target So if you have people who are sitting in charge of the school saying it won't happen here dangerous mindset you got to get that changed The other thing is hardening your perimeter and people say to me wow security is expensive and my answer as well Security is not expensive it's priceless So when you find ways to make your doors hard and so we can prevent what happened yesterday where some in the same thing that happened in sandy hook They just shoot through the glass and walk into the building Those two things of denying that mindset that it can't happen here and denying entry of bad guys to your building those are the two most important things right off the bat

"That's important for me now. This is not a deja vu the movie. Though I enjoy it. I want to talk about one technical thing. You're recreating 1971. I thought the movie would fall flat because it's very hard to make period pieces accurate. This is on the nose. And if you were, I was in high school in 1971 as you were. And I, many of these scenes were shot at Newport harbor high school. I thought you went to Corona del mar high school. I'm not sure. But I was both, okay, so I went to Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Sunday with my wife, and I said, by the way, there's the set for part of the Jesus revolution. And boy, their attention to detail was remarkable. I don't know where they found the clothes of the cars, Greg, but they got it right. Well, it was, you know, it was produced by the lionsgate, which is a major film studio, and they had a gigantic wardrobe department. They had everything did here, they make up their all these trailers set up, it was like a little city. So I was pretty amazing. Here's the magic of a movie that scene you saw in Harvard high school was actually filmed in Alabama. The school that looked just like Carver and I was there when they shot those scenes. It wasn't harbor high school. No, it was not. Oh my goodness. What I had to look like it. Yes, it did. I was told well, I was just saying when we recreated those themes, I told the director, I said, this is so close to the way it was. It feels exactly like it was because it's a lot more affordable to shoot in Alabama than it is in California, but there were crucial scenes. It had to be shot in California, most notably the baptism season because the film sort of built with the baptism is a huge scene in the middle of the film with pirates called beach for another baptism, the baptism of my character. And then at the end, so it's almost like Newport beaches in specifically pirates club is almost like a character in the story. Absolutely. And by the way, beautifully filmed, I'm sure the city of Newport Beach cooperated with you, but it's just a picture of California in 1971. Now Greg Laurie, when you set out, obviously studios have metrics. What did they expect this film to do? Well, I think the first opening weekend it did 14 million and they expected it to do half of that. And so it just kind of blew out of the gate, but we did see this year, it is surpassed our expectations, but our expectations were not low either. Because we've been actually showing this film for almost a year. To groups large and small around the United States, I've been at a lot of those showing setting them up, explaining the film. So we've been showing it to believers who were getting very excited about it. So when it opened, they were there in force. Is the writer of the original Time Magazine story still alive? I don't know if he is, but they actually created a composite character and that happens a lot of movies because you'll have you had a lot of people that covered the Jesus movement from look magazine. Do you remember look back at this? Yes, of course. No one else does. It's not my age, but yep. So they get some he took the people that wrote the articles for them and another photographer in the writer of the Time Magazine piece made them into a single composite character and gave him the same Josiah. So he was sort of a created character, but he represented the skeptical press sent to cover the Jesus movement and there's one line in the film where that character needs to say, turn to my character, Greg and said, when they gave me this assignment, I didn't want to do it. I like to cover wars and things that matter, not a bunch of hippies and Jesus, but he said, but it's impacted me and that actually happened to a number of the reporters that covered the Jesus movement they saw something that was genuine and real there..

"From Bill browder Tom who just called this theater Yeah I think mister browder of course has got a shocking heritage on this channel I can't say enough about this John I had the great honor of studying under Russ Rebecca Stewart Stewart Her father George Stewart was very much an equivalent to the browder family This would be Bill browder's father and grandfather and what they put up with coming out of Nazi Germany It was humbling to hear that from professor Stewart years ago in boulder And it shadows It's ghost John I'm not comparing it to where we are now It's not my job to do that but these ghosts that haunt us from the family of Bill browder is really something extraordinary right now Well some of the headlines on diplomacy made the reality of the moment on the ground This came from the Ukrainian foreign minister just moments ago who set out on Twitter the following Today's Russian attacks on a kindergarten and an orphanage a war crimes Together with the general prosecutor's office we are now collecting this and other facts which we will immediately send to The Hague responsibility is inevitable Now Tom the headline crossing the Russia is ready for talks got to ask yourself what are their objectives in those talks And how receptive were Ukrainian speed when the Russian president has been very clear about his objectives The country to change the leadership Right John you wonder about the linkage here to what we're actually witnessing on two fronts and I have no news on the Black Sea front as of today This is Bloomberg surveillance on radio on television and we welcome you this morning to a most unusual Friday Lisa Brown wants John farrow and Tom Keane as we move forward We're going to have a discussion here shortly on the impact on the American economy but John I think even with the reset we just did we need to re brief right now with bank of Russia headlines coming out They announced new measures to support Russian banks John no surprise there Well they state of playing this morning so I'm pretty clear We wake up this morning with Russian forces closing in on Ukraine's capital We understand there's an effort to bring talks to the table the Chinese pushing that effort pushing the Russians to have those talks with Ukraine the latest headline from interfax if you're just tuning in suggesting that Russia is ready to send a delegation to Minsk for Ukraine talks Let's say of this knee jerk reaction in the market actually holds Tom We're just off session highs on European equities now Futures are up just a tenth of 1% on a S&P and as soon as you turn to someone just to get their view Tom on that headline to hear Bill just call it theater straight off the bat and hope he's wrong but ultimately call it theater is discouraging to say the least Well they can be two theories of school two schools I should say of theory on this but what we're doing is trying to observe on a military front John I would simply suggest I want you to bring in Sarah hunt here I think that we can do that with a market review a data check But John I would just say that the military front is simply the reports that Bloomberg news has and frankly others that we from Belarus moving down south to Kyiv also the western roads closed from Kyiv by Russian forces Of course that Great Migration some 300 miles to live and actually Barbara Starr CNN mentioning some forms of military efforts on love I really don't have a confirmation on that but Barbara's been doing this for years John why don't you pick it up with a data check And again green on the screen Let's work our way through the price section I put tenth of 1% on the S&P on the NASDAQ at the moment up two tenths of 1% Yields are near session highs up four basis points and back through 2% crude up four tenths of 1% at 93 18 But a Euro strength out there too Back with a one 12 handle one 1221 a quarter of 1% Sarah hunter with us now portfolio manager at Alpine Woods capital investors Sarah let's start here Investors at the moment seem to be whipsawed by headline to headline around this story And I just wonder what your best approach is how you're navigating the story of the moment Well first of all I just want to say that it's heartbreaking to see what's happening to regular people and how hard that's going to be for the people of the Ukraine who did not necessarily have any interest in having become such a conflagration I think yesterday you saw the New York headline reactions on the fact that there was an invasion and the market went down sharply And I think people started to parse the idea that perhaps that would make central banks back off a little bit so that I think is part of why you saw that what saw yesterday between going down so sharply in the morning and then coming back in the afternoon I think that helped out the technology shares You saw a lot of the stocks that were hurt by higher rates were the thought of higher rates do better yesterday And I think that's part of what you saw in that move in the markets yesterday Sarah this week has been about fear of the tail risk And you saw that fear of the tail risk in the whip side action that we have seen in markets in the conversations that people are talking about both on the record And the more unspeakable things that they're saying off the record Sarah as you gauge the tail risk how do you hedge that out Have you prepared for a greater chance of something more materially going wrong Well I would say that coming into this year we were already fairly cautious just because of the change in interest rate regimes and the fact that you had two back to back very good years for equities and you're seeing slow down from the COVID release and all the things that are going along with that plus the change in the fed policy So we already had some hedges on I think you're trying to hedge broad market risk and the concerns that are going to happen And I think that if you look at what's going on right now and you think about the inflation picture none of this is anything more than more inflationary So the idea that this will slow the fed down or that it will make central bodies back off is a little bit difficult to parse in terms of real world data So I think that that's going to be an interesting how that plays out is going to be interesting And you can also look at what's going on with energy policy because part of the issue for Europe and part of the issue right now with trying to do something about what Russia is doing is that there is a little bit of a conundrum because you're trapped by the energy situation and that Russia has An upper hand there We can see how that's playing out already at the moment It's very clear from this administration They don't want to disrupt disrupt the energy flows as the global economy recovers When you get problems like this you always get the regulator tan and the banks to do the following The bank of Russia recommending banks delay dividend and bonus payments and Tom that's going to come to no surprise to you to lease it to me to anyone that that's where we're at right now when the UK and the U.S..

The Two Schools of Thought When It Comes to Ukraine
"There are two schools of thought in thinking about the Ukraine and neither of them seems to me to be satisfactory. The first one is, well, let's call it the warmongering approach. Here's Michael mcfaul of former U.S. ambassador to Russia. He says in the global struggle between democracy and dictatorship and the fight for a peaceful Europe, Ukraine is on the front line, not unlike West Germany during the Cold War. Well, number one, this is a facile transplantation from one crisis to another a second is a huge difference between Ukraine and West Germany to take a single example. Ukraine used to be part of Russia. In fact, in my series talking about Russian literature, a number of the Russian writers, and I'll talk later today about Google. Google was born in the Ukraine in the Ukraine was then part of the tsarist, empires, so part of what makes this a little tricky is that in the case of Ukraine, Russia is saying not that we are invading a bordering or neighboring country, but rather we are exercising influence and seeking to sort of absorb a country that was always, or at least that was historically part of Russia. By the way, China makes exactly the same claim about Taiwan. It's what China is saying is we're not, we're not invading India, we're not invading Europe or essentially absorbing a country, Taiwan that was part of China, look at the people over there they are Chinese. So we have to understand the point of view of the people that were up against. Now, on the other side, as the warmongering side that I mentioned, on the other side, you've got the I would call it quasi isolation aside. It's not our fight. We have nothing to do with this. Here's Matt Walsh, kind of a typical expression of this view. Ukraine is not our country and not our problem. Anyone who would risk a war with Russia for the sake of some random country 6000 miles away is a fool or a psychopath or both. Now, strictly speaking this is true. I don't see it's difficult to think of the United States going to war over the Ukraine, but it's also difficult to consider the United States going to war over Taiwan. And then when the United States go to war, if China took over South Korea, how about if China then took over Japan with the United States go to war over that? So when you apply this kind of America first principle, at an extreme, it would seem to suggest that the United States should basically mind its own business, let all the bullies of the world satisfy their appetite for aggression, we are hands off, what's this got to do with us until you show up basically you know what New York City or in California, this is not our problem. I really can not agree with this. I think it actually reflects a naive and perhaps even foolish view of power politics. Why? Because the simple truth is that there are innumerable options in between doing nothing and going

As NYC Crime Surges, Police Focus Attention on 9-Year-Old Girl Without Vaccine Card
"City, let me tell you what's going on in New York City right now. Every category of serious crimes, according to New York Post, in the city is on the rise so far this year, with police data showing an increase of 35% in a total increase in crime compared to the same time in 2021. Jessica Seymour, from inwood, Manhattan says, quote, I don't go anytime after dark right now, not safe. All my friends in New York are leaving. Or they are. They stay at home when it becomes night. A guy got stabbed and another guy shot right outside my son's window, said Seymour, whose boy is 7. We have two schools here, and this happens right here. My block has police on it all the time. There are shootings that are drug dealers on our corner right now. The fear is real, crimes are up. So what is the police force of New York City wasting their time doing? What is the focus of the New York police department that of course has our eternal respect after what happened with 9 11, but they've turned into an American version and I do not use this lightly of the Stasi. Play the tape, I'm going to narrate it. So here you have right here at a museum in New York City. That is a 9 year old girl. Now, I'm not trying to racialize this. Her name is jaila. I think she is a black girl. Is that right? So this is a black girl being escorted right there by two masked New York City police department, police officers, all the while crimes, murders, arsons, rapes, sexual assaults, are up, these two police officers are effectively arresting a 9 year old girl. Why? Because she did not have her vaccine papers at a museum. These two police officers now continue and bring the 9 year old girl into a squad car and put her in like she's El Chapo or Eric Rudolph or Ted Kaczynski the uniform. You know, forget the fact that gang activity is up and robbery and murders are up. This is a young black girl that has been put into a police department car and escorted up. "Happy Independence Day from balance of nature and God bless America and her people. 5 70 a M K l i. F Welcome back to thrive. Time with Jay. Mamie. Welcome back. Everyone to the J made me talk show. I am Jamie. Me and I'm excited to have our featured guest. Brigadier General Mark Maldonado is the first Hispanic commander in the District of Columbia Air National Guard which as he will share with you guys is the premier airspace for security because of the White House and the Capitol building. I mean, it is top notch area for space Security and and not only has mark shown himself to be the guy who can assist industry and providing security, But he's the first Hispanic commander to do that, Uh, Quite the resume. His incredible and vast resume of experienced guys is what it's quite frankly what movies are made of, and I appreciate the fact that him and I grew up also in the Bronx, New York, and here he is as one of the top commanders in the country, So I'm excited to have him on the show. Mark, Welcome to the show. A J. Great to be here. Thank you so much for having me brother. It is my pleasure. And, hey, we're going to dive into some really good, great stuff here. But before we go ahead and do that, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself? All right. Um, so like he just said, grew up in the Bronx. Before that. I grew up in Puerto Rico. And I was there through about third grade, Uh, grew up there with my grandparents and then came back to the states to live with my mom. And from there are just grew up in the Bronx went to Cardinal Hayes High School and on the Grand Concourse went to the Air Force Academy became a pilot did that for a while and then decided to go to law school. Um I went to law school became a federal prosecutor for about 15 years or so, uh, did also some work on the civil side. For private firm area on Wall Street and then from there came back into government. I worked for the Drug Enforcement Administration, and then after that, you know, I got promoted to general and the military's reservist, and I'm doing that full time now for about a year and a half now. You know, I was telling the Pat Pat the program director here before we were about to announce you that man, This guy's This guy's like the real life. Jack Ryan. He's a Puerto Rican. Jack Ryan. Yeah. What? All of the experiences you haven't and by the way, you and I had a conversation over the, uh, about a few days ago and and there is so much more that we could spend an hour on all the things that you've done and all the experiences and all the travels into trips and anti terrorism stuff that you've been involved in, Um, which is a main Using, uh, for for our listeners to hear and and we'll probably have you back in the future against the shareholders. Those really wonderful stories. But what inspired you to pursue in Lisbon in the in the Air Force, which is not something that most Uh, you know, Hispanics from the Bronx dream about doing Yeah. You know, the big thing was I grew up in Puerto Rico. My my grandfather was my role model used, Uh, you know, he's like a five ft six. Uh, man who you know was the older window and he was raising my brother and I and he was a carpenter. Um and and, you know, he was very patriotic and in the sense of always believing that that you know, should disappear forward and and serve the community. Um, And so he always talked about the military. And I don't know what? Why he did that. He never. He never served in the military himself. They always put that out. There is something to do You know, something that he thought was was meaningful. And so I just I just grabbed onto that. You know, I was older, and so when I was at Cardinal Hayes applied to two schools. I applied to West Point in the Air Force Academy. I got into both, uh and then decide to go in there for scanning. And that's wonderful. My actually my son also applied to West Point now he's a Marine. Um, but I was, but it it's interesting and but is what's even more interesting market said he went to Truman High School, and he was ROTC Air Force and he was, you know, he left it with a nice rank. It was, uh and and a specific ranking to recall, but He was in a position of leadership. So when he announced they were going to the Marines, I was like the Marines, but you did four years of air Force ROTC with credentials. Wow. So who knows? Who knows what went on his mind? But but he's there now, and he's going to really enjoy this this episode. But what lessons I mean, Listen, you mentioned group in Puerto Rico. Obviously you grew up with your grandparents came here to New York. You were with your mom and I believe Your mom was a single mom as she has some health concerns, so I'm sure that wasn't easy. But tell us a little bit about that and how that impacted you early on in terms of teaching your lessons about life and fortitude and resiliency. Gonna tell you, J, you know, uh, my military career and just, you know, life in general, you come across so many folks who who have so many amazing life stories right, so and and it's all about overcoming obstacles and impediments and trying to achieve the best version of you that you can and the interesting thing is so as I told my story. I have a tough time doing that because I'm not used to really talking about me. I I I really prefer talk about others, but But to the extent that this might help your listeners, look, you know I grew up really poor area, the Bronx. My mother was a single mom. She had me at 18. She had my brother when she was 17. She couldn't take care of us. Uh, there's a lot of issues there. Went to live with my grandparents when I was just six months old and then came back to live with her. When I was about nine do not speak a word of English when I came to live with her, and she could not speak Spanish at all. Um, And so, you know, she had a lot of health issues growing up. Um and and, yeah, she stop your strokes. She had some some other back problems, and I got to the point where she could really work..

Food for Thought
Why You're Not Losing Weight
"Lot of people will be looking for weight loss and probably assuming that if they want to lose weight. It's got to be this militants Routine and the strict diets. What are your thoughts on that type of belief absolutely and i think that's a really common thought prices for a lot of people and i'm here to tell everyone that no you absolutely don't need to militant but we do need to be two things in my experience reaction and that is i calorie deficit and be consistent because most people who try to lose a little bit of white either a not in`eke deficit. So you know the eating really healthy and exercising and that's wonderful but it's still a little bit too much of that body so they're not seeing those sort of results that they would like or they're just not consistent the lung enough because what they're doing is just too strict and you know they're able to do for a couple of weeks Which is honestly you know tightly. No because we don't want to give up favorite foods. So i'm here to tell you that there is absolutely ruined for your favorite foods. Carbohydrates days off the gym. A couple of extra suites. All that is okay can absolutely bid But you know you just need to be consistent over time to get those results which unfortunately a lot of people aren't okapi. And i think that's a really difficult thing about human nature. I mean we talk a lot on this cost about the fact. It's not just down to willpower there. So unfair to say that As a phrase itself. But you you touched on kerry deficits. Let's go. let's go into that because it's not that straightforward i. I think it can be confusing because of course. That's the assumption that you could just eat calories consisting of chocolate and being a deficit. And that's going to help you see the results. Need if you know what i mean. Yeah i think that you know this sort of two schools of thought as you as we mentioned before. I jumped on this podcast with reality new mentioning tiktok and i've been on the uproar maybe about a year now and is a huge push from personal trainers Fitness young people even fifteen. Sixteen year. old to you now have a million below is online. "For Carl tomorrow on the tomato report on NewsRadio, 600 Coco. S so dismal job reports not good news for the economy. Not good results for the investment The federal government has made on also gives us an opportunity to talk about when we're going to put an end to all this. The pandemic is effectively over, right? I mean, for all intents and I, I know it's still a pandemic technically, because if that's happening of the parts of the world, but the effect that it's happening on our lives is coming to an end. Even in California, where they never want the pandemic to end in Sacramento has put an end date at what June 15th. So help wanted signs up everywhere. Everyone's looking for employees. McDonald's is literally paying people to fill out applications, all this effort to get people to come back to work and people who are available to work. And the ones that were working, even pre pandemic not showing up to work. Everyone's trying to figure out why. And one of the three reasons that the economists over the Wall Street Journal of you know, Kind of pondered. Well, you know, there's that fear that you could get sick if you go back to work. Hmm. Strike one Well, you know, schools haven't re opened. So that leaves a lot of parents without child care. Well, I'll give that one Abi. That's true in California. It's not true everywhere else, and there's a national statistics. So in California, if you don't have if your school district is still not opening like mine. Uh and you don't have a job. You really can't go and look for work. I have no idea what the school district's think. Where they think the money comes from to pay their salaries. I really don't know. I think they don't understand that it takes working people in the private sector. Get a pay Jack. So the Sacramento can rob that paycheck of as much money as they can so they can pay teachers and administrators. Quote unquote educators. Edibles never get that anyway, So I'm not surprised that they didn't send, but I'll give that one a pass. That's a push that the people are going to work because no one there to watch the kids. But many people are receiving more money unemployment benefits than they would earn in the available jobs. All right, that ought to be the headline. Because I guarantee you that's the reason Don't need to fly to New York on sit on a, you know, a panel of experts You know, chief economist studying these? I guarantee you that's the reason Obviously, if people are earning enough money to do nothing. They will have to do nothing over something. Now there are two schools of thought on this, right? Yes. Adam owes Emmick he's chief economist for the platform up work. He said he thought improved unemployment benefits worry wise policy early in the pandemic, but now Sees problems, he said some of the hardest hit parts of the economy had been the slowest to bounce back, including restaurants, hotels and in person services providers that face shortages of workers and rising wage pressures. The benefits of a policy Miss. Take that going to hold back the recovery going to hold back to recovery in the coming months. Is that businesses need to pay more to attract workers this summer will find it difficult to lower wages in the fall when he said the labor market could lose him once unemployment benefits expire. In other words, the only way For the boss to be able to compete for workers..

I thought the answer in honey reference was quite in congress but yeah although he's also also look forward to the crusade isn't it yes. I felt there's more Sorry less punish and the linguistic jokes. I feel there are fewer linguistic jokes in the romans. But that's just because people have different writing styles there's not as fewer than a fogbound pay also than say the mythmakers. Because i guess there's not wes tunes comic interests lie. It's it's curious that this story has such a reputation for for being a comedy because there's a lot of it that's not trying to be funny. I mean this grim stuff minutes from very downbeat and pessimistic and The the slavery stuff is unpleasant uncomfortable and not played for life. Yep the barbara stuff is most something with nero is played for laughs but with the in the context of being sold into slavery is absolutely notice. The undertones are all there. She has an awful story. it doesn't show him as a character fundamentally pretty much anything that could be wrong Nominees even niro situation is pretty grim. Biden stands yeah. I feel like this time. Not just the most the comedy's pretty black power from the thing. Everyone remembers because there to two schools of thought on this. I is that it's a comedy. The through and through the other scholars are well is is only three. Has the comedy in and the rest of it is straight but yeah i mean even some of the jokes which seem asphalt surface are are quite dark if you take them literally like when Narrow test the boys non his us the obvious example You'll laugh because we're all awful people but is still dark humor in it and there are other examples them said one is definitely trying to play for comedy. I mean there's there's actual attempts proper jokes yes the seems to be a lot worked-out in rehearsals or don't wanna step on or you about st giles. The doctor going a narrow pulling up a stool in the doctor. Going on as narrows about to use it at least little bits. And there's a bit where the doctors waving his sword about in a narrow face and shops inside and all these bits presumably. I didn't bother to check unscripted and aid like the actors have seen. There is some comedy in the script and just trying to punch up in rehearsals to to convince us that it's Hilarious all the way through. I mean what what episode three is is. A beautiful foster isn't it. I mean it's it's so stephania foss you call this fantastic scenario where somehow the doctrine barbara never meet despite the fact that there about three feet away from each other all time..

We set standards ourselves that we want our kids to achieve that we want our schools to achieve and no two schools are the same. No to educations are the same but it just makes me wonder are we falling behind other countries where we in front of them in the first place. How do we compare these apples and oranges if we're falling behind. What does that mean.

Why It Matters
Gone Fishing
"Can be tough to try and make lifestyle choices that will help build a healthier world over and over we find out that one of our habits is contributing to climate change inequality or the destruction of earth's bio-diversity even habits. We thought were healthy. Take seafood for years. We were told that fish were an important part of a good diet but now we are learning that many of the fish we are used to eating or threatened species. Seafood is the largest traded food commodity in the world and it plays an essential role in our global diet for some people. Fish are a luxury but in many of the world's poorest and fastest growing populations it's a matter of survival at the same time relentless industrial fishing methods are pushing many species to the brink. If things don't change our fishing habits could devastate ocean bio-diversity and deplete a resource that humanity needs in order to survive. Fish are in trouble but the solution may not be what you expect. I'm gabrielle sierra. And this is why it matters today. Will there always be plenty of fish in the sea. What's over seventy six percent of the world's fish now or fish fished capacity overfished or collapsing and fifty years. The earth has lost more than half of its life. We completely destroy the natural balance of fish in the world's oceans. So are we going to run out of fish. If the current way that humans are fishing continues in the current practices remaining unchecked. That doesn't set up a good scenario for our future. My name is michelle curic. And i'm the vice president for ocean policy at the world wildlife fund. In the united states the pressure the amount of fish the frequency the quantities. That fishermen are taking out a really causing many stocks to be in very bad shape in terms of their future viability. I mean fish is one of the most heavily traded food commodities that we have fishing really is a big business in two thousand eighteen. The global export market reached an estimated value of one hundred and sixty four billion dollars. Asia is the leading region in the fishing industry with china south korea japan taiwan and one outlier spain fielding the most vessels globally the european union the united states and japan or the three places that consume the most fish by volume. And it's really valuable. Many different species are very high. Cost so there is a lot of profit to be made in catching fish. We have these manmade causes. These drivers these threats that are caused by you know just better technology. Bigger boats better refrigeration easier methods of transport and we have some of the man induced natural factors like climate change which are also changing the water quality the composition the affiliation of the water. That fish call home and some species can't adapt that well they move to different parts of the ocean to have a more hospitable climate and that then raises lots of political issues about get to catch. And how many if you've ever gone fishing. You know the drill a rod align a hook some bait and maybe a boat but modern day industrial fishing looks nothing like that. The boats and many fishing fleets are essentially gigantic floating factories inside. They have all the machinery necessary to process freeze and package. Hundreds of tons of fish per day guided two schools of fish by sonar and spotter planes. Some of these ships dragnets that are over a mile long sneering whole schools of fish that thereafter and many that they aren't after to some of the methods are shocking take bottom trawling which involves dragging massive nets across the ocean floor in the hopes of sweeping up fish the process destroys coral and other ocean floor ecosystems that are essential for all kinds of life just for one catch s fish populations decline these fleets are having to travel further from land and drag their nuts deeper in order to reach their targets when it comes to fisheries. There are two things that are important to know first about one in three fish. Stocks is overfished at that means that we are catching more than the population is able to produce by his branch. I'm the director of fisheries at the foot and organiz ation of the united nations. And i'm also a professor at the university of exeter in the uk to have an analogy with john king. We are eating into the capital rather than just using the interest that doesn't mean that we collapsing. The population is just. This is not sustainable. We need actually to change that. But we see a dichotomy of what is happening. Between developed countries and developing countries in developed countries. We see increasingly an improvement in sustainability status in developing countries. We see the opposite. We see it decrease in sustainability increasing volume of problems. Those are not easy to resolve.

"I hear hear the two schools of thought to hear people say stick to elaine. Pick one thing and just kinda crush it and now you're saying something very interesting. i'm. I'm in your mindset like when i was early on in my career especially like when i was getting jobs i was offered the job but at pornhub bills like hey. Do you want to come work for a porn company. I'm like yeah. I was like i don't know anything about this. I don't even know i don't know what. Seo is i have no idea anything so Sometimes limiting yourself is actually. And then i learned about payments from their souls like had i not taken that job that was like i was gonna. I was the affiliate manager. I was like. What am i gonna sell. People like i don't i don't get this but Not having taken that job would not have led me to the pocket. I'm here today. So i feel sometimes. There's the advice is always like pick something specific. Just stick stick stick to it. But i think the onset you just have to be kind of like do anything you know like like you said the contents writer or whatever And just do the best that you can. And i think in general like when i hire people or am sure when you hire people it's like if you feel like somebody's willing to try and fix what they're doing and listening to advice like you're going to work with them again you know. They'll they'll if they fix it. Obviously they'd give you something she didn't give me my hundred bucks that's it but So it's very interesting so you would say email. Copywriting is the easiest skill and then long-form sales. How about ads like writing pads. Like what kind of skills do you need for that or like. I guess it's different than email. Does it convert the same. You think or yet. I think that in this official not to you today. Ninety percent health copy rights I am that's down in probably the most. I don't know the most successful of copyright. I can't even anybody who's does more of it has more wins. Mutating like that And is where. I'm today but like you know it took a long time and doing a bunch of other stuff to get to the point. You can this right. You do payment processing right. Like your niche down now but early on yeah like if you close every other door around you closing always other opportunities. i think it's important to To be open to opportunities as you're coming into this world as are on the same level as emails. I think that adds are maybe a little bit. Just aramaic rate was slightly more difficult. Finally facebook ads. Say stuff right now. I think a lot of ossie comes down to having to be so hypersensitive with the language using 'cause like hall compliance 'cause. They didn't let us operate from the road or the assumption that we want everything we do to be compliant ethically compliant rate legally compliant but then there's like facebook compliance which is not ethical or legal facebook compliances like fucking facebook's aggressive woke up on the wrong side of the bed and you said like you know you're tired of some your whole account spanned nearly with a faulk right. I mean it's crazy. It's like friends. Frenzy jewelry stores like banned people. Everyone gets fan base progress. It's the worse fiscal. Just once is that they need the money so they kind of let it slide but they wanna just have like tv they wanna be tv from like one. Tv was broadcast big brands. Messaging with no.

"I could be abjectly wrong on. What did kurt first of all have you ever had a guest on the show. Were you just vehemently disagreed with what they said. And what did you do about it. I mean it's pretty rare at happens because a of times before we do a show. We'll do pre-game conversation right where we talk through teams in topics but i've definitely Deliberately had people on the show that i disagreed with their approach. And they've disagreed with my approach but the thing was is that. I knew that this person that i was having on was interested in having a debate. Not in being right necessarily so. I've definitely had people in the show that have different viewpoints on management and leadership. I do but what i appreciate about those conversations that they were opened up. They were open to having a debate about the topic. Not just leaving with the last word. Okay that's pretty emotionally evolved by the way to take that approach this incurred. There's many ways of evolution get credit for that one right so i want to get the talk a little bit about bias in where it comes from and how we manage its in. We've got intrinsic bias training now. Theoretically and organizations goes inclusion diversity is so important And if i was sasha baron cohen doing like the borat character. I'd say so is biased. Training teaching you how to take a real biased approach and stick with in just defended till the day is able to do that in biased training. I don't i still don't know what bias training is do you. You know the only only bias training that has worked on me is like i said just spending more time with people that don't have the same thoughts and beliefs that idea the more time that i can spend with those people and i think this show by my company has been a vehicle in helping me bridge that gap because working in the tech industry over the years the majority of the people that i've worked with look like mean had backgrounds like me win two schools like i did grew up in neighborhoods like.

Anjanette Young police raid prompts Chicago aldermen to push for search warrant changes
"Chicago Older women introduced a plan today to tighten the rules to obtain and execute search warrants, followed by the botched raid at the home of Anjanette Young by Chicago police in 2019. Young was forced to stand naked for about 45 minutes handcuffed while police searched her apartment after she repeatedly told them they were in the wrong home. Young is confident the measure will pass. I am confident because there is a lot of support in my community. I am confident because the there too. The two schools social work here in the city of Chicago, support me as a social worker, and they're on board. The question is forward. And I just believe that we're gonna continue to push this until it happened. So I'm very confident that we're gonna move forward with it. That Mayor life. Let's not so sure the police Department itself has been working diligently. If my quick read of the ordinance, it doesn't reference any of the current practices or procedures of the police department. Regarding search warrants, which I think is problematic in and of itself. The ordinance would outlaw no knock warrants and prohibit police from relying solely on information from informants.

Body Image In The Queer Community
"I didn't know what you listening. Think about this. But i think there's a really interesting point that feels like there are two schools of quin us. One school is that there are these bodies like this kind of ultra-fit body with six packs. And all of that. World to generalize which is about trying to ascribe to hold of what is to be for example masculine in that way that like people feel like they have failed at being a man so they have to show that they are actually make it all right in other areas. Therefore they're gonna have the amazing body. They're going to have the amazing job. They're going to have the call. And then there's this other kind of new brighton. New beautiful dawn of people who are actually embracing this idea that like male female gender quit gender fluid wherever you are. You can be whatever you want wherever on the spectrum you can be. You can have armpit. Hair is a man as a woman as a as whatever it doesn't matter and i feel like those two different universes are bubbling up and one of them the feeling data's and i think it's about treating your body with kindness and treating yourselves with kindness

"Well yeah so then. After that you go to uc berkeley correct s and tell me about that experience. What was your major. And what was the experience there. So i Studied architecture and city planning urban. Planning and italian as a minor. I went to italy abroad to rome. Which was amazing. Actually meant it. Ron wyden with cornell because i really wanted meeting robin berkeley didn't have a program there and so i am. I feel lucky. I'm like went to two schools in terms of the amount of people that i met in college and freya to cornell in ithaca so through a friend that i started abroad with this how i know her so my whole family. Wow yeah berkeley is amazing experience. It's such a magical place. It was great to be somewhere that fell quite different from home but yet close enough that i could hop on like a thirty nine dollars. Southwest flight day of do my laundry at my parents house. Which i'm sure they loved or go like check out the library book at ucla. That berkeley didn't have 'cause the uc system. All one program in that way. I think it's still is so it was just awesome. I love being there. I definitely think it inspired me as far as food and eating and eating in a sustainable way i mean berkeley's kind of the homeland of slow food movement in this country. I actually feel like. I ate quite well in in college and got really into cooking and mom. That definitely was the foundation for me too. Yeah when did you start. I wanna get kind of when you decided to start the company but when did you start seriously making desserts i. It's it's always more of a really into making savory dishes and then started making the ice cream actually with micron. Sarah her brother an ice cream machine and he was making some flavors from scratch and lear. Kinda just hanging out. I started to play around with it to that at the same time that the recession was starting and i was starting to think about this ice cream sandwich idea. The punny names after architects. And i think. I've always enjoyed ice cream making because i think of ice cream a bit more like cooking where it's this live experience in front of you almost like making a sauce. Where like you could be churning at any. You could add vice or solve or booze or something crunchy and taste as you go bit more versus like baking cookies. Like in our original ice cream sandwich happens with being coaching i. Actually i would not call myself..

The Lead
Tara VanDerveer's Legacy Goes Beyond The Court
"Will soon after beating pacific on tuesday. Stanford's tara vanderveer became the winningest head coach in women's college basketball history. What did she have to say about that accomplishment after the game she really downplayed it for so long and because this has been an inevitability for so long this was supposed to happen during the installation tournament march right so she's had her time to prepare for when this milestone would have happened it all continued to get pushed back and cancelled so she's had time to contextual is a this is special because of i think the magnitude of that many wins like you never go into coaching. I never thought we'll. I'm gonna try to win a thousand games or anything like that but this is special. I mean having currently the number one team you know being undefeated planning and i will never forget this. I think she was able to really lead into it more. And i think going forward. It'll start to hit her. She kind of joked about she swims every morning today. She finally go in the pool in it would be seeking in. I thought about today when i was swimming. I said you know. I hope we do play. Well i hope you know the record is set and going to be in the pool tomorrow. I'm going to be the same person. Vanderveer surpassed the leap pat summitt to claim this milestone. What kind of relationship do these two legendary coaches share. It was special. You know. I think it really came out. Because in the early nineties tara had made this promise to jennifer if she went to stanford they play at tennessee at least once and that became a twenty five year series because they enjoyed the competitive aspect of it more than anything. She helped me get better as a coach. Because you had to really work hard to prepare and we lost more games than we won against interstate. The enjoyed having to brilliant minds with really talented players going back and forth every single year. And even yesterday tara talking about how. She's hoping that pets looking down on earned smiling we were friends and obviously competitors. She would tell me tire your teammates rebound better. I think all in all you know she had great passion for the game. And i think she sees that with me she was a great mentor and a great friend and i think she'd be proud of us. So that relationship between the two of them was incredibly strong and then even between the two schools gotten incredibly strong zaqueu recently spoke with the number of women who played under vanderveer across her forty two years as a head coach. I what did some of these players tell you about her coaching style. I spoke to aid tucker who is one of towers longest tenured assistance before she retired just a couple years ago and she was talking about kind of value of repetition. Here strong believer repetition for not only are you covering the fundamentals but you cover the same thing over and over and over and then once you've got protection. If you continue to do it again you will become an expert in that task. i think some people think. Don't you have another drill for this or can't we do something else today. But you know. I think you know in hindsight. That's how you build your habits. It'd be doing something over and over. I spoke to jayne appel marinelli dealer day about tara and one of the things she said was it can matter who we were preparing for. We're going to prepare the same exact way every single time that every single day and i mean there were games where we knew. The teams plays better than they knew that. If from that she took that like you can't really be Over prepared as long as you know what's going to happen and you're the best situation for that you're going to succeed over over over to kind of realize like my my life at home with my kids and my husband. My work life my life with friends. I mean every single aspect. I feel like a prepared for and i've thought through. Okay here's option a option b. option so i thought that was kind of poignant is just those life lessons they'd come just from playing basketball are practically applied other portions of her everyday existence on zach rosalyn gold on wednesday who is now a broadcaster actually told you a pretty funny story about how she was. Unable to escape vanderveer's coaching even after her playing days were done. Can you tell us what ross told you about that. It's funny because she had just gotten into broadcasting was just doing game for one of the first times in her career and stands up back at stanford right so tara gives her a call and says hey. You're on campus. Come down to the office on my god. What i thought i was done with this sits down and puts on video and we're looking at a game that i'm calling the broadcaster and she starts going through the game and it's just watching the game minute by minute and she stops. She's watching film like it was ten years go for started the game. We'd listened you. Like i like that rod. Apogee say that would love word the other thing like. Oh we're going to do this. Yeah like even after graduation cars. Coaching me success. And i'll say something about the election and she'll be like i can't believe you're talking about shots. She is somebody who stays so president or blair's lives that she wants him to succeed. She wants to do as well as she can. And this is just a little bit of tar that she could lend in this situation to say. Here's how you can do better. And i want you to succeed. Tara been in the public eye for over four decades now so a lot of fans might feel like they know her really well but some of her former players shared with you aspects of her personality. That many people might not be familiar with. Were there any anecdotes in particular. That stood out or surprised. You you know there were. And i think we only really scratch the surface on somebody whose sole multifaceted so fascinating but one of the things i thought was really funny was neck. Oh k. had mentioned the situation where they were practising and maples pavilion at their home. Arena right before they were supposed to begin. Play in the final four and tar would prepare by like lasting music over over the speakers in maple wants them to be familiar with the idea that you're going to be in a situation where you're going to be playing in front of nineteen thousand people screaming their lungs he would do that. Enhance obviously our focus our concentrations but most importantly our communication because it ended up so that we were in arenas here each other thinking blessing his music and she usually blasts like michael jackson. Whatever it might be from the eighties nineties. And suddenly she turns over and she starts blasting who left the dogs out and all the players are kind of laughing. It's kind of awkward kind of out of character and some spontaneous and she would start dancing and it was just it was really funny. Like in the middle fact is dancing. You know in those theories when you're trying to go through four. I remember all the time. She has a sense of humor. That just doesn't always translate publicly but it's very dry and very very sarcastic and because she can be so hope and his so approachable. Her players always loved her
