Nearly 600 agents and officials are en route to the Del Rio area to help process the crowds gathered. The Biden administration says refugees will eventually be flown back to their countries of origin. Questions remain concerning the U. S airstrike in Kabul last month that killed 10 civilians. The Pentagon has apologized for the strike that it originally said had killed a likely Isis K threat and that there were no indications of civilian casualties but later amended that to say In fact, only civilians were killed, the majority of whom were kids. It's really cool having you with us today as thank you so much for being with us. Thank you george. It's a real pleasure being here. Thanks for having me. You're willing to tell us how you got your start in aviation well. My interest probably probably started with my dad who is a world war two pilots who have six hell cats in the pacific right. He was a fighter. Ace jot down. Seven zero sank destroyer so that that probably would what's first introduced me aviation muscle lived in the san francisco bay area and i can always. We could see quite often from where we live going up. Point the final approach for san francisco international airport. So i've really enjoyed watching the airplanes. Come in and that just kind of got me interested in aviation basically so i assume that with your dad as an ace after the war where people were there a lot of adulation or was it kind of a a normal thing to be ace. Well i don't think it was a normal thing. I think a lot of people were proud of it for that but but as time went on it became something more within the family that you know we we. We knew he was guy we thought of him as kind of a hero in his flying endeavors and listening to stories was a lot of fine. You know sure so. Wendy take your first flying lesson first. Flying lesson in nineteen sixty. Seven is my first year in college. I graduated from high school. And i was interested in the asian so i wasn't sure you know exactly what i was going to study. The only college in california that offered a four year degree in in Aviation was san jose state but that was in business administration the the college of san mateo community college. They had a two year. Course that specialized the end basic training to be a pilot studied aerodynamics amex navigation in urology and stuff in in in one of the three hundred courses was actually forty hours of flying a cessna down to san carlos airport so i thought this is the perfect way to get going and so i enrolled in that program guy solo to november of nineteen sixty seven eighteen. Okay now did you. Did you collect ratings right away. After that i got my private and the course led to a commercial a rating but after about the first three semesters i kinda realizing that. This is really what i want to do. My goal is to become an airline pilot. And i knew it'd be an airline pilot. That i was gonna actually need my adp. And soft. and i was going to need to accumulate. You know quite a bit of experience. So i kind of decided you know. I'm not going to spend any more money trying to get my commercial because right now. Let's talk to serve me. 'cause i plan on getting a bachelor's degree us like to go into the military base. Oh okay so where did you go to get your bachelor's. I ended up at san francisco state university. I got my bachelors in mathematics. And then you went there were you in. Rotc not was it. Ninety day wonder and ots officer training school. At lackland in san antonio. So i i graduated from college. In june of seventy two and two weeks later. I went out to san antonio and started into your ot s for a for ninety days and they were gonna pound with training. Poetry was up. Advance up in enid. Oklahoma and i enjoy them quite a bit. It was the i found all came fairly naturally and easy the advantage of already abbot close to two hundred hours of flying time so i knew all the basics basically so it was you know i. I really have good pilots right. I felt for the guys really haven't or part wasn't that tough

". That is the book about flying down at Chile and first of all. . I guess the question is why in the world did you fly a one seventy two from where you aren't Phoenix all the way down to Santiago Chile you could have just put it in a crate ship. . Is that they avoid the trap of the Hundred Dollar Hamburger <hes> in my time as an instructor I saw so many students would you know get their their private and they would fly for a couple years? ? They'd go have breakfast. . You know an hour away couple of hours away and whatever, , and just do kind of. . You know little runs day trips and stuff and they got bored because you know after a while you've been all the places that are in our way and you know you, , you've already had every dish on the menu at your favorite airport restaurant and then you get bored. . And so I I always told my students you know <hes>. . You know rent the plane overnight go places take your family you know make it make it kind of a gateway to all these experiences that you can't have with the airlines are or just by road tripping around. . And <hes> one of my students who really took that to heart and he bought a brand new Cessna one, , seventy, , two and <hes>. . told me hey I I. . WanNa buy this plane and I want to fly it to Chile after I, , pick it up and I said. . And you know you can just take the wings off and put it in a container and <hes>. . You know in a couple of months it'll be waiting for you. . And he laughed he goes well, aren't , you the guy that told me I should go fly and have adventures and not just do the hunter dollar hamburger and I said well yeah. . And so <hes> that was how we came to do it. . He he was my private student he <hes> bought the airplane delivered. . <hes> maybe a month or two before he got his private we spent another month or two of getting the equipment we needed and flying off the I fifty hours <hes> on the engine. . You know <hes> to go through the break in period so we could switch to regular oil. . And obviously, , you know we didn't want to be surprised by any bugs or any any issues with the airplane that we might find. . We didn't have any and so <hes> we <hes> we did that fifty hours and then we <hes> on a very cold November morning in Scottsdale Arizona we we took off for Santa Iago. . Wow and that's But there's a little bit of planning ahead though before we just jumped on the plane and win so tells us a little bit about that as far as going down because I'm sure it took like a month or a month or whatever to get down there. . How did you go about especially with a brand new student planning a trip through multiple countries, , different types of aerospace down to Chile well <hes> it started out with him saying, , how do we do this and me saying you know I've never actually flown out of the country before. . The my student who became my very good friend that where we're still very good friends to this day more than twenty years later. . He was a very successful businessman from Chile. . <hes> had businesses all over central and south. . America. . <hes> was very well versed in business and in traveling and kind of negotiating <hes> the red tape of doing business in other countries, , and so he he didn't know the nation part of it, , but but he was already a depth kind of weaving his way through bureaucracy. . And what I brought to the table was obviously you had a bad prion, , two thousand and fifteen hundred hours at that time. So . I've been flying for while. . <hes> and so I kind of knew the airplane part of it but the actual planning basically started with me saying, , Hey, let's , just call planning company and be done with it. . Just send US everything and we'll send them a check. . Well, , it turns out that there's not a single planning company that will touch a piston airplane they they only do jets and so <hes> we basically did it on her own. . We found an F., , B. O. and Chile that was willing to help us a little bit <hes> while we were on the road <hes> this was. . Cell phones were around but not too many people had them, , and certainly an international plans were not a thing. . So. . We kind of needed somebody in real time could assist us. . But for the most part we we searched out all the permits ourselves just. . was basically you know cold calling the various agencies in in all the different countries we plan to land in and just got the permits <hes> we had email, , and so most of it was done by email I spoke a little bit of Spanish <hes>, , but it wasn't great and so he did most of the communicating and I did kind of logistical planning of okay. . We're in a one, , seventy two we can go about four hours, , and so we mapped out our stops and figured out you know what would be technical stop where we would just get gas and keep on going and then what stops would be overnight stops where we would have to clear customs and Have permission to stay on an overnight basis, , and so it it took about six months <hes>. . I kept a journal and I still have all my notes you know phone numbers and email addresses for all these different agencies and when I contacted who and <hes> kept tractable of all the permits as they came in <hes>. . But we we kind of had a date set. . We wanted to hit the weather so that it wasn't too hot wasn't too cold on either end <hes> because obviously the seasons are opposite and in south, America. , . So we had to kind of thread the needle weather wise <hes>. . So we started pretty early <hes> but by. . Probably late September early October we had everything lined up that we needed one looking at the at the math here I had to refresh my geography I guess. . Just just looking at the root, , you'd have to take up the one, , seventy two. . You'RE NOT GONNA fly over the Pacific Ocean right? ? Right. . Right there. . So I mean just down obviously from Arizona through Mexico and. . Guatemala Nicaragua to be fifteen countries or something along the way. . It was eleven, , countries, , eleven. . Affair yes. . And and being a one, seventy , two you probably had to stop and most of them I'd imagine. . Or Eight. . Now we didn't use. . We didn't use bladder tanks. . The airplane was completely unmodified so like I said, , you know that airplane <hes>. . Was a sixty gallon usable airplane or no sorry fifty gallon US airplane. . So burning ten gallons and our meant for hours and we we needed a place to land. . So we we based. . All of our flight planning on that was that we we couldn't go any more than four hours,

Vic Syracuse Homebuilt Aircraft Council Chairman on His Building History

"So how'd you How did you first get involved with With ea where you involve with a chapter when you were younger where that come from. No I if I think back to my first touch on was I. I started building an RV for that was something I always wanted to do. Since I was a kid and I saw. I probably a teeny two or something. On the cover of a mechanics illustrated you can build bigger airplanes. And so I think it was twenty five. I started building rb. Four and Went and visited the local chapter. It was quite a bit different back then. Quite honestly it wasn't quite as welcoming to youth. It was more of an older gentleman's club and they seem to want to sit around and talk more than they did want to build and I wanted to build so one or two visits. I just stayed at home and spent that time building as opposed to a bill chapters. And I I'm at Air Venture was One Thousand Nine hundred ninety one when I came here after I'd already started building. The RB foreign got my first ride with Dick Van. Brunson in the four wow. That's that's a great interaction. What was it led you to the RV to begin with the first of many RV's actually you'll get a kick out of this so like every person trying to build their first airplane. You're on a budget and trying to figure things out and so I'm trying to look at some of the cheaper. Airplanes were to build and The one that was out there at the time I think was a monet model and I realized I didn't have welding skills so next thing I know we're sitting at the dinner table. One night and private pilot magazine came and there was an RV. Four on the cover doing a loop. And I made a comment at dinner to my wife that I really liked to build an airplane someday and her words were well. It'd be nice if you quit talking about it. So that's all I needed to hear. Order was in the mail the next day I love that woman to. That's that is terrific just out of curiosity the RV for you. GotTa ride in from from Dick. Was that the prototype. Yes it's the one in the museum right now. Yes that was the first survey you've ever had a ride and was the one that sets the display so you do have to point out how old I am music. There's a lot of airplanes are now in in thanks. I'm well Oh my goodness so How long did it take you to build that first? Rv for? And what was that experience? Like so I kind of didn't know what I was doing. I'd been building. He's gets for a good part of my life. You start on page one page ten. You've got something and Building like radios teams up to color. Tv's okay did you ever built the weather station the beneath get weather station. I didn't do that. Dad and I did that together. Only father something projects like that hands on that we did. That was a lot of fun. Yeah I missiles heath kit days me to have my silla scope and once in a while but that's just when you look like a bond villain or something so Well BACK TO VIG. You asked me about trying to remember the question. Sorry the question is what was the how long it took out the RV here. I am this twenty five year old kid and again it was an old guys club and I I've always been one. Once you start you keep going and you get it done and So I kept calling pestering fan. Hey Winston xe kit coming so I started out as serial number. Two thirty nine ended up being the twelfth. One finished vowed I think it was about twenty two months later. Twenty four months later maybe was the first RV for Sun and fun and the first one east of the Mississippi rivers a lot of fun. What do you remember about that? First Flight? The first airplane you built. It was reminds me of here a little bit in that. It was on a New Year's Eve in Cleveland. Ohio and it was minus ten degrees. So we all know what kind of performance you are visa but when you're in an RV four with only. I think I had ten gallons of fuel in it and it was minus ten. You can imagine how that thing Klein about ten thousand minutes. You're not supposed to need oxygen during phase one remember very hilarious so we have a VHS tape. Tom You probably look that up in the library but as a kid okay. So it's funny here. It is it's minus ten degrees outside and I land in the family's all around and I'm I'm I'm on cloud nine. I'm so excited and everything and in video you can see everybody else. Kind of standing around freezing for my wife finding says getting we go inside Your Square John. Ten feet tall Having just mastered this role as test pilot. What did you fly to get ready to to get comfortable in the RV farm you had the right and the other RV but did you. Was there. Another airplane you flew to get deal skills Sharp and all that sort of thing was a lot of ratings at that time including I was doing a tail wheel instruction outer let As a good practice there was a friend on the field and he had a decathlon so that very morning I went up I with him and did three takeoff and landings just to make cert- draining back then right which is something. We're trying to change quite a bit today and no transition team and NO SECOND PILOT ADDITIONAL PILOT PROGRAM. No Load No. Ea Flight Test Manual. But but they had electricity and things. Tom I mean it wasn't it wasn't that long ago is our guest. Okay civic after the after the four. What did you go onto to build? So when I had the four for probably I think three years or so and Basically had a four place family so it got to be not a whole lot of fun having this to place airplane and about that time. Prescott pusher came into being and they came to us with a lot of splash and unfortunately I got caught up in that real splash and again I was the first one to actually finish the Prescott pusher and did manage to fly. Here Dash Gosh The first year we finished it but You know a number. A number of other people behind me Came to demise in that aircraft it was not represented very well and so we realized at that time the best thing to do for four place airplane was probably a rant or have partners and So built another place airplane Kit Fox and Most of the time you're flying by yourself anyway or with one other family member and then we We had partners in one. Eighty two. And then bonanza so that filled the four-place niece for awhile until I was could convince Dick van grunts into doing RV ten which took about ten to twelve years and so you're saying that That the RV ten exists is to shut you up. We'll tell you this alone. I came to air venture. I think it was nineteen ninety-six. After pestering van every year for however many years my wife and I were probably twenty feet from his booth and he sees us coming up and he points right at us and says all right. I'm going to do one. Excellent and you also I mean obviously in addition to the aircraft. A you've built you've you've test flown. Many aircraft done pre buys them in the aircraft also. Da are as well does this represent a free FAA signing off aircraft But one in particular that of that we all have some connection with is the one week wonder the RV twelve iso we built an adventure In in two thousand eighteen. You did the first flight on that I did. That was fun so I'm always have an emotional connection to that aircraft. Matter of fact at lunch I was just explaining that to a couple of your new hires. Here go take me take advantage of flying club you have here and then rb twelve with special. I was just flying in on Sunday. Good for you good for you. After David and Serena dropped it off so that was that was terrific thing getting that airplane out there and show you off two chapters and that was literally the Monday after adventure right. "Of investment required is massive the speed of investment required. Will be Mathis also private companies are wary of making massive investments in unproven research and technologies. The government does however this is my favorite line of all in the whole book. It this is it. Okay. The whole sentence starting to do. Starting to do new things requires some up front investment in the same way that a company that is trying to change. How how it does business may need to build it make big upfront capital investments today in order to reap future benefits. Perennials four E G. What you're thinking miss goodness for building. A new factory to increase production going on now promote Justice and equity by stopping current preventing future and repairing historic oppression of front line and vulnerable communities. Now this one I miss early up massively expand claimed manufacturing. I missed this one earlier totally overhaul transportation by massively expanding electric vehicle manufacturing. Bill charging stations everywhere. Okay. I gotta stop here. We are in a radio studio that has a lot of electronics. And you know, what I probably have five hundred charging stations here already. They're called outlets plugs. We've got oodles of them all over the we need to Bill charging stations. Everywhere. You don't understand we double the number of charging station. Thirty one dollars. We need to build out high manufacturing Bill charging stations everywhere. High speed rail at a scale this God love this where air travel stops. He's not sure. Well, I'm stunned. I got a light down. Airline executives are looking each other. What was the pilots and the and the F eighteen palettes and the F twenty two pilots and all those people who are planning to go to Europe and three or four years saving up for a vacation. And they're saying they're gonna stop airplanes everywhere in ten years. Airplanes will no longer exists. I got an order to finish their things massive federal investments and insistence to organizations and businesses participating us democratic and participatory processes led by fraught line and vulnerable communities to implement GED projects locally. And then the best line of the whole thing that my favorite line. My favorite line is four E G can use. What you're thinking? Miss four g no proof reading involved. Here's the best line chain, free prior and informed consent of indigenous people. This is I gotta tell you right now. I just tweeted out that line. That's a trap door in the green new deal, obtain free prior and informed consent of indigenous peoples. I'm sorry. I'm afraid I can't do that. There are two million nine hundred thirty two thousand two hundred and forty eight Americans registered his native Americans not including Elizabeth Warren. That is a lot of paperwork. Right. That's a lot of paperwork if we're gonna get free prior and informed consent. If we can't get cloture in the Senate for a judge. Yeah. You think we're gonna get cloture from every native American in the country green new deal two million nine hundred by the way, I'm not even sure of native American and indigenous peoples are overlapping, I don't know in the AFC world if that's Ben diagram that's perfectly aligned so we're gonna need some expansion on that. So am I indigenous I've been here my whole life? You might be indigenous means you I think she means. And I think she's excluding African Americans. I think she is they're not indigenous people they were enslaved people. So not getting the buy in of the formerly. Enslaved people is a big big problem with the trap door here. But I'm telling you right now, that's a lot of paperwork. No matter how you slice indigenous. That's a lot of wavers we need to get a copy of the waiver up online ace sap four G. They could they could put it up on her website. Four G, they might publish it in the New York Times. Thinking miss. We are going to be using the term for a long time. You know, what she thinks four G is short for for example. Yeah. She thinks. That's what that's what she. No. You know, the the Democrats if we could just get pictures of them putting their heads down on the desk because if you're a teacher, I've been a teacher synthetic Ninety-six papers like this. And you know, what I say about a paper like this. Strawberry. They laughed at me say somebody didn't do the work. I look at a paper like this. And I put my head down on the desk. And they've been here all semester. Right now, I my first amendment seminar, and they're writing and Emeka meekest brief according to the rules of the United States Supreme court and those rules are laid out. They're pretty easy to find number of pages margins all that kind of stuff. It makes them go through it. And they're writing on an American Legion versus American humanist association, which the biggest case in my view, the term. So I have about twenty students in that maybe twenty five cents in that some seminar, and there's a bell curve and everything so two to three students are going to turn into me a seminar paper that is not done to the margins of this specs. It's it'll be fifty pages long or it'll be three pages long. It happens every student every teacher out there. Driving to work right now knows what I'm talking about. It's the paper you look at it. And you say that into a liquor work. They did this on their way to school this morning on the best. They did this or they just don't have the work. This is that I I honestly I can see her walking around the office with a bunch of millennials dictating not realizing that the word massive might be used. Let let's just go for massive here. We're gonna count massive massive number one. We've got a massive number two. We've got massive number three. We've got massive number four. We've got massive number five. We've got massive numbers. Six we've got massive number seven massive number eight massive number nine. Then we have four G winning. Four. Courteously? Jerry Hendriks, tell me Jerry, captain Hendrix you've received a lot of raping. I know you're listening. If you had a a Lieutenant j g or Anson turn in this paper, what would happen promote Justice and equity by stopping current prevailing future and repairing historic oppression of frontline and Bob, but we're back the massive. We got another massive, we another massively. And we have one more massive we have one more frontline. And then we have our obtain free prior and informed consent of indigenous people. I'm sorry. I'm afraid I can't do that..

Bill Mathis Jerry Hendriks Europe New York Times Senate Elizabeth Warren American Legion United States Supreme court j g AFC American humanist association Emeka meekest Bob captain Hendrix

"I am the supporting sunshine like that's what I need to be because I in in any Christopher Nolan project. He's so good. But then when he tried, but I like him in Looper. So I also feel about that Looper, Don, John and secretly one of my most favorite movies ever that. I always forget it's fifty fifty that's one of my favorite summer. I even love five hundred days of summer. Yeah. I do. I really do. I it's before I really started to dislike her like, I'm not on Zoe's team anymore. Let me ask you this. He has an upcoming project wingmen. Okay. Let me describe it to you. Or I know about my heart. You kidding me? Right now. Have you done that? There's no way you've tattooed at this on your heart. He's directing he will be directing the film. It's him and Channing Tatum starting as two pilots. It is a comedy slash musical. Okay. So I didn't realize slash musical. I think he realized it was a slash musical. Thank you. Exactly. There's no way. This is good. And I know somebody like a year from now is gonna remember when you said there was no way this is good. And now at your green light. I hope that's the case because I really do love Channing Tatum Anjos of corden love it. But I do not think that's going to be the case. I do I feel like this is a void. This is Joanna hill sized void Janning Tatum's trying to fill. And then he also didn't realize it was a musical as well. But I think you've got. Remember, especially in the scope of career for Jessica and Levitt like he's been in business since he was six. Yeah. So he's not looking at it. Like, I have to hit it here in the next two years or I'm out like I think he's just like I've been doing this river. I'm going to really do things. I enjoy they might not be commercially successful. At least that's what that's what Jordan Gordon has always told us when we've talked him in the break room. And he's been trying to explain some of these decisions probably the right decision. And hopefully, he will hit big again. So that we can enjoy him in that way. All right, Claire wood said Domino's pizza for the past ten years. They keep on..
