Mask Sprays & Advanced EO Chemistry

"All right. I'm here with Amy Galloper. Who's a nationally celebrated Essential Oil Educator Advocate Entrepreneur formulator and consultant with over twenty years in the Beauty Space Amy teaches empowers and inspires others to use essential oils with a holistic approach that starts with mindfulness and reflection and leads to total well being amy was on my show back episode one nineteen to talk about. Oil and plant powered beauty, but for this episode and really excited to focus more on the deeper more advanced knowledge around essential oil chemistries. So I'm super blessed to have you here on the show us today amy, how are you? Well, thank you for inviting with Samantha I'm very honored to be here. I love talking about essential with us. This is great. Thank you for including me I'm excited to geek out with you wait well before we got on this call we. Were talking a little bit about masks sprays. So before we get into chemistry have to like, have you share with my audience, what you're doing with mask sprays that these days? Well, I've been using both the disposable, and then some cloth masks, and obviously the best thing to do is to have a cloth mask and wash it after you know every day if you use it like for an eight hour day, it's recommended that you wash it and in between if you. Work and you take it off and you WanNa kind of spray something on it to keep it clean but also to help keep you calm. Would I've been doing is I've been using ethanol. which is also like ever clear like high proof alcohol. So it's about one eighty, two, one, nine, one, ninety, proof alcohol and I'll put let's say if I have a one ounce bottle or two ounce bottle, I'll put half of it the alcohol, the other half distilled water, and then all use essential oils that I find are anti microbial antibacterial but also really relaxing and are not gonNA be too like A. And my respiratory because remember like your mask already is covering your breathing's reading more labor than it would be usually. So I tend to go with like you might think, oh, Eucalyptus would be great but honestly I try that and after breeding eucalyptus like straight, it was just like too much. You know what I mean so. I find like Sitra says, I've been using lavender I've been using mandarin grapefruit works create an i. just do a really. I. Don't get too crazy because it is right up in your nose and in your mouth but I have found like that lavender's been my main. I guess you would call it core oil and then I just lay around that. So like I'm used lavender I've done like one tiny drop of Rosemary and men I've done like Orange Mandarin or grapefruit or maybe both orange and grapefruit with that, and that's been kind of my Combo I've also tried to black spruce with some lavender which is Really Nice in orange. That's also been a nice thing. So I have something for calming and then something to just support my breathing. So it's kind of been my bank. Yeah, and so you mix those oils in with a is it all hall? You don't put any which as our water in there? No no I do do which I do I do which as I have bought it at Marine could use a hiker slack Schley I've just been using distilled water basically, what do I have like two ounces which is like what is at a quarter JAC? Great quarterback is two ounces. So like two ounces of. To fill my bottle. So one ounce would be alcohol and you could use I guess you could use vodka I guess that's what you have, and then you would use other ounce as water but the way I mix my essential oils in because I, want them to kind of dissolved. So what I'll do and I make sure that I mix everything in a glass bowl or a glass. or a drinking glass or something, and I'll put the alcohol first and then I'll add the essentials and since it's right up on my face in my mouth, I really keep the dilution really low. So only put in lake. I don't know maybe like five to six drops of lavender seven drops of lavender needy, and then I'll do maybe like one or two drops of Rosemary and maybe like. Six drops of orange six drops of grapefruit or something like that or maybe Al divide those in half due for of. For of great for you and then I'll fix stat in the alcohol. Make sure that it's all really well blended and then all slowly pour in distilled water and then I pour that mix it up, stir it, and then I pour that a my bottle put US spray bottle I'll shake the bottle and then what I do is I hold my mask up and I spray in the inside of the mask and the outside, and then I wave the Basque around just to light it, let it air out a little. Bit and then I'll put it on. So it's not like too intense on my face. Does that make Santa whole sense thank you so much for walking Mike Beyond walking step-by-step through that was so helpful because I keep seeing this around I'm like, okay. But what exactly are you doing with this and that was so helpful but I'm curious what do you really feel like mixing the essential wheels with the alcohol I like mixing it with a whisker some pain helps it versus just pouring in like shaking it all day. Yeah actually I do because once essential oils in water don't really mix very well whereas the essential oils will dissolve them alcohol really really well, another thing you could do you don't even put it in a glasses maybe fill your bottle right halfway with the alcohol. Then add your essential oils, put the lid on it, shake it, and then add the water to kind of top it off that would. Be Good like that's another thing and the alcohol to is helps just killing some of the germs in addition to helping it's more about the germ thing. Do you know 'cause we're breathing right out of our mouth also, there's obviously things that we want to be aware of their to absolutely fix. So that's how I think doing that procedure will just make the oils like dissolve better into the extra. Perfect awesome episode over that was great now Katie. We. Talked about some chemistry. That was perfect I. That can you explain I wanna get into some some chemistry here and get really deep into the different kinds of molecules and That make up essential oils like how do you sort of categorize these in your brain? Well, as we know, essential oils are composed of many many different molecules and chemical constituents. You said, some have upward of two hundred different components and others just have maybe one or two. You know something like Eucalyptus or lemon. You know they're primarily just made up a one or two or three different chemical constituents, different molecules, and it's important here that I just say 'cause I know we talk a lot about like you know chemicals are bad chemicals a bag here we're talking about chemicals being like what? In nature like what we understand as like the structure of molecules, and what we understand is chemical compounds that are existing in nature that are made up of atoms like oxygen and carbon

Man dies from eating too much black licorice

"This young man and in Boston, everybody Boston kids, all right. Was just killed by black licorice. Whoa! What What did her strangle him with one of those ropes of licorice? No, but that would seem more likely that that's how he die. He actually died from eating too much black. What? Just build up a black licorice that's poisonous. Apparently it is therea. So I like black licorice. I don't know about other people. But if I'm picking A snack food. I like it. I like a black licorice. I don't love the taste The problem with it. I get the the soft eaten kind that they sell at some of the healthier story. You can get a whole foods or new leaf. But it's also feels like so Nick. That after about three or four of them, you start to go. I don't know if my body can actually even process this. It feels so. All right. Golden's It feels country right, like you're going to gum up the works with that. That's definitely going to plug a hole somewhere. I definitely only have a couple of them when I choose that for a snack. So apparently black liquors can be dangerous. There's a 54 year old guy in Boston, who recently died because he overdosed on the stuff. His heart stopped. They say that you have a warning label. Like how much did he have to eat for this man? I'm going to tell you. He ate about a bag and a half every day For a few weeks. Black licorice is filled with something called You can do it glides arisen acid, Eliza Ristic. Glad I like lice arising. Its goal is horrific. Glaser or Isaac? Acid. Ah, and that's dangerous in high concentrations. Where's throws nutrients in your body out of whack. If you eat a little as two ounces a day for two weeks, it can kill you. And it's especially true for people over 40. So stick to candy. That's You know, solid p ece, quite frankly, like licorice had no idea in large quantities can kill you. This guy died. Jesus and I love

Masks, Covid & Nutrition Highlights

"Hey thanks for listening I'm your host, Samantha Leigh Right today, we have a slightly different kinds of episode coming your way in light of all of the things happening with covid nineteen. I, wanted to do a special episode highlighting the foundations of Health for you all focused around the corona virus really wanted to cover the topic of mask specifically because there's so many questions that people have centered around mask right now and I know that I, personally have been wanting some clarity around. How mask are effective why are people saying sometimes, they're not and what the debate on both sides, and then also specifically, what else can we be doing in our lives to boost our immune systems protect ourselves from the scary seaward that's going around right now. So today's episode unlike most of our shows don't focus a lot around the topic of central oils but I really wanted the opportunity to talk to Dr Furman whose work I really admire if you're not familiar with his work. I think you're really going to like what he has to say. So we'll get to that interview soon. But first, let's talk about essential oils for a little while I wanted to share my favorite oils from this past week. Am that has been the thieves chest rub? That is a fairly new product coming from young living right now, if you haven't experienced it yet, it is a chest rub formula that comes in this great little squeeze bottle where you don't have to get your hands all greasy to apply it, which is one of my favorite things about it. So if you WANNA check it out or if you want to try to make your own version of it, you could. Buy One of those empties kind of squirt bottles from Amazon or wherever, or just use like an old squirt bottle. You've got lying around anything that will allow you to fill your own formula of stuff and then squeeze a little bit of the top will do and it is a combination of eucalyptus essential oil menthol and camphor. As you might be able to hear, I've got a little bit of flim stuck down in my chest and I've been putting the thieves chester up on at night especially at night. When you lay down, you've got that extra kind of weight of gravity and that's when when the cough likes to come out. So putting the chest rub on is so soothing. It smells so good. Now, if you WANNA make your own kind of chest rub concoction than I would use a base of coconut oil and maybe even some CA- cow butter or and or beeswax shaving shaven down because what you want is a real thick carrier oil base for this because you don't want the oil soak into your chest and your skin too. Quickly, you wanted to act as sort of an on going vapor that's going to be releasing from that chest rub so you WANNA thick carrier oil base again, beeswax is great for that. If you have some of that, you can shave it down and melted a bit and then from there do a real strong concoction if. You're making a small batch may be twenty to thirty drops of an essential oil nice and strong of mainly Eucalyptus. That's the Go-to for all things respiratory. So whatever eucalyptus oils you have around or blends of our great. If you want to add some other things in there to support your immune system, I would throw in some peppermint open up those nasal passageways maybe nice. Irby oil like Rosemary or time or Oregano. T tree is Great Franken Census Grey also any of those oils you have thrown into that nice thick carrier oil use it as a gesture of as needed or check out the thieves chest rub is easy to apply real strong, real potent, and give it five stars. And now, I'm super excited to share this week's DIY dugout recipe. It comes from Deborah Shannon in Atkins Arkansas and it is a recipe for a citrus phys the sounds. So delicious in glass combined the following ingredients and mix thoroughly half a can to one can of sparkling water one packet of Stevia, two drops, grapefruit essential oil, and then optional if you have any inning sherrod around at one to two ounces of Nick. Sharad. If you don't have Ningxia ride, which is a great will ferry puree juice that young living makes you can add in maybe another dark red kind of juice like Cherry juice pomegranate or something, and then ice. So just combine all that and you've got yourself a citrus phys.

Scientists Discover New Lemur Species

"And gorillas may be our best known primate cousins. You might be less familiar with mouse lemurs, the world's smallest primates. They're tiny and adorable, with big googly eyes and fairy tales. They can be tough to spot in the forests of Madagascar and even tougher for scientists to identify when you go to the forest, and you will see your mouth remark is night time to actually tell what species belongs to. Marina Blanco is a research scientist at the Duke Leamer Center in North Carolina, and for years her team surveyed the lowland forests of northeastern Madagascar are capturing and measuring the tiny nocturnal creatures. I took genetic samples to now. All that work has paid off because they see one of the mouse lemurs they sampled, often found clinging to cardamom bushes is a new species. Only about 10 inches long, and half of that is its tail, and it weighs just two ounces. A scientist named it Micros Abyss Janahi or Jonas Mouse lemur. Best (Airline) Credit Card Rewards Program: Part 3

"My name is Don Meyer in my name is Aaron Meyer. And thank you once again for joining us this week. Thanks for continuing to join US week after week. We really appreciate your support. We hope you're finding it useful if anything especially in today's interesting time so you know. We can all benefit from a nice little distraction. But even more so. I think you know what we've been talking about. The last few weeks have been around the different credit card programs. The different options that you have for the different loyalty programs and I think you know in light of what's going on. We are going to get through. This life will continue to you. Know or we'll find a way to get back to normal and we'll have an opportunity to go back and start traveling again so it's really a good opportunity to take a look and see what's out there. You know realistically what programs are available. What different options you have for different loyalty programs do some research and you know which program works the best for you. Exactly what you after. And in a what you value the most and then last episode we talked about that could be the access to lounges at the airport. Because you travel so much or it could be the two programs that we highlight it. Ultimate rewards a membership rewards with American Express where they have flexibility to turn to point into either the airline or the hotel motels days or even the gift cards at Cetera right global entry and stuff like that is where the hundred dollar credit towards global entry fee and whatnot. So there's no one credit card that fits all needs type of a situation I think and and I use to avoid anything with a annual fee right no way but if you really do a lot more research many of the benefits that come with certain credit cards is actually councils off most of the annual fee and again if you are if you spend on certain categories a lot and if you can find a credit card that can offer the most benefits in that category with the travel industry or It could be dining and restaurant. You know that sort of categories you spend the most. They're they're just credit card that caters to those specific span categories. So just the knowing which credit card offers you the most value. I'm beginning to think the credit cards with high annual fees. Sometimes sometimes you pay off so especially now you know since we are spending a good amount on food in particular A great opportunity to sign up for some of those rewards programs that offer you additional miles every meal purchase or grocery store or visited that we do so you know. It's a really good time to take a look and see what's out there in. We're we're doing some research here. We figured we'd share some of that with you right so last week. We touched on a it. Was the hotel site of last week. We kinda came back from a couple of weeks changing travel plans and all that sort of thing. We're little little disheveled to say the least adjusting. Yeah Ted started a new segment around the drink of the week which will get into. Yes we're going to start off with that. But the last episode prior to the Shutdown. Everything was around. You're right the hotel rewards programs that we were highlighting. Yes so we are going to talk about airlines today. Yeah but first. We promised last week. We're going to start off with with our recipe of the week this week. Wow Okay well. You know after some much deserved enjoyment in in relaxation with the Margaritas. This week we're going to take a little bit of a detour. I hope you guys enjoyed that recipe because I really think that's a really fresh and that locale per se but not that syrupy-sweet nonsense. It's you'll find most of the places. God Yeah really good this week. We'RE GOING TO SHIFT GEARS. And we're GONNA take a vodka based approach to a Martini. Vodka Vodka. Yes but a little bit of a twist on on the Martini. We're GONNA talk about an Espresso Martini. Something that you had discovered not too long ago. That's a new favorite of mine. And what how I was looking so so how it came about was that we are in Santa Cruz. And it's a beach town and we sat down and have late launch or whatever and this restaurant call ideal bar and grill. It's red at the end of the boardwalk right before the peer right that goes and it's the restaurant in a corner and overlooking the ocean and all the lady across from me was this IC- I mean pretty Martini lady was. She had the glass in front of a year. What did I say you said? The lady in front of you was an icy Martini and I was like oh I know where your mind was. I'm sorry but she was having a cocktail. Oh my God that looks so yummy. It was kind of like a frosty the condensation and then also the. I think it didn't have like it. Wasn't the ice. Noone really way strain very well but they had streaks of chocolate syrup but it looked good and was a chocolate espresso. Martini and I wanted to try. I didn't try them because I was having Margarita that day and it looks so good and then the minute that I try at. Actually the other restaurants I've been a testing it out different restaurants. It'd be before the restaurant shutdown. It tastes so good so I ask my bartender to make version for me right exactly and then so. Let's go through the ingredients. Perfect perfect so. I'm not going to do the chocolate version of as a little sweet for my taste. It's going to add a lot more calories and it's like drinking a milkshake so it's not bad. I mean but in in light of all the other foods and things like that. That were were consuming. Now we're a little bit more sedentary. Cut Back a little bit on the calories and try something a little bit less syrupy sweet if you will so the ingredients that we're going to start off with. Is Vodka Vodka is the primary ingredient for any type of Martini? In this case we're going to use our favorite vodka which is one several absolute a lot. We use. What's what's the hangar. One we use it and I like hanging ruined a lot as well so we used a very just a regular hangar. One Vodka no flavors to it whatsoever. I'm at vodka for those of you don't know it's a grain alcohol It is usually about forty percent is the average you'll get from a bottle. It's about eighty proof if you will and it is clear it is odorless and it's tasteless if it's really really good and it's really highly refined very well. Filtered makes it really really good the only thing you can really taste from vodka's the nice warmth that you get when you consume dangerous. It can be dangerous because it's Kinda tasteless now. I don't know but it's also versatile you can put like a juice and exactly. That's what makes us over still because there is no such a cool with it. Plays well with other CSI premium liquor. We kill one. Grey Goose Grey. Goose is also another good one is well hang is not bad but if you know your your standards in one of the ones that I really go to all the time as smirnoff I can't go wrong with smirnoff. It's a really really good. Vodka and absolute is also quite good as well so start off with regular vodka and we are going to put it in a Shaker with ice now before you do this one of the cool things that you should do is grab your Martini Glass. Or whatever glass. You're going to consume this poor some ice into it. I then put some water in it and set it aside the reason we're going to do that. That's going to chill the glass for us so we're ready to go cooler. I mean can you can pretty dairy fridge if you didn't do that and you wanted to be able to consume it right away. Pour some ice into the glass. Put some water in a glass. Set It aside while you're mixing up your drink that Oh cool off the glass just enough to where you get that condensation on the makes a difference. I watch you do that. And it makes such a difference because before when when I try to mimic it right. I don't do that and it's like you can't put the glasses on right away. Exactly right you can put your glasses in the freezer. I tend to forget things. I'll walk away from it and now that we've broken Glazunov not getting done it once or twice so start off with the froze or a nice frosty glass. So keep that aside now we're gonNA take jigger of vodka which is I think about two ounces. We're GonNa pour that into our shaker. Which already got into it. The next thing is a full glass of. I WANNA be able to get the the coolness from it. Oh that's right. The next ingredient is Qaluwa and Colusa for the no is a coffee flavored liqueur that comes from from Mexico it contains Rum Sugar Vanilla bean and Arabic coffee. I don't know if you knew that high knew how yes. It's a great drink to just drink as an apparently for just a little bit ice cool glass on a nice kind of I dunno. Beach Day kind of thing. It's just a really nice drink to

Like Appropriately but had no idea like how it was going to get there what that bed so I guess I was always like kind of an idea in the head but actually was kind of a nerd in high school actually was planning to be a chemist I went to university with the intention of that and volleyball took over my life so okay so when you say you're going to be him if like how do you feel that working out like Nafta type stuff like why can't we be wasn't entirely sure but I just chemistry high school. I started my first year at college in my hometown. Action with the intention doing or years volleyball but graduating ending chemistry after the whole course life change. That's awesome so so you had your MFN bio theme Pro Volleyball Claire. So when you wrote that in life started happening had you start thin are i. How can I make this reality? Yeah I think Actually like I was just trying to remember when I started playing volleyball. I think I was about while which is crazy now to think about says while is actually been two decades now. I've been playing volleyball thirty. Two ounce so yeah. It's Kinda crazy but I think the starting kind of jump off point for me was when I made team be see from. Abc and I made that provincial team when I was like or teen I think and Is your calling you very raw. Was the word they used for Terrible but I jumped really high back then. I guess I'd potential so they took me and I didn't interview That year the year after something for them I think it had something like one day. I WANNA wear like a maple leafs on my back in fourteen candidate ahead said that Ben in nearly no like what it took to get there but eventually became a path so dover I know there's Tony was the have the application you know. They say. I want to be in Olympia and I WANNA don't own and do all these things. People atoms dry. Yeah like you can't do that to. How did you keep your mind? That like may laugh at my drain on a chase them all like originally when I started playing volleyball. I didn't even really WANNA play Bible like I started dance when I was like three years old. So I dance all the way up until the end of my high school. And my mom had kinda like encourage Mir Gently pushed me to play volleyball and at the time like basketball. More which is binding workers like ended up deciding basketball's too much running for me so I ended up. I was doing all three things. That was dancing. Anos playing volleyball and basketball into high school and then I can window basketball and then faced out dance. Bowling Ball's seemed like a better future option to go with so I started college. I graduated sixteen so a super young and I had offers to go to other schools like in the states and other Kadian universities ended up wanting to just stay home and I had really good the program at it was actually called back in but it's the UCLA now University of British Columbia Okanagan so that was in Colona and the coach was Steve. Manual was one of my mentor coaches still to this day. He kind of had a big role to play in my progression volleyball. So after my first year there recruited to go to U B C in Vancouver with Doug Rhymer in his team and it was kind of scary. Move to consider and I went to a two years with Steve Cohen than ended up making a transfer to UC Vancouver in coober into the it's called CIS fact then it's like all changed Old Sport now like a Canadian University system so I ended up going there my third year and after my first year there. I actually got invited to try out for the national team so just kind of like crazy because after my first year. Ub See a lot of the players on ABC. Were playing on the national team or not was. Kinda like became more of a realistic goal. I guess you'd say and I was like you know maybe after a couple more years like chance tryout and it was just kind of a really strange process how I ended up getting a tryout and then ended up making it and as when I was nineteen and so things just took off from there. Wow so he graduated at fifteen Lloyd. just win for team into transitioning to the next level. Yeah so like when I started I was still kind of didn't really have the idea like my first year. I was like okay. I'm going to chemistry and whatever tall Canadian still pretty nerdy. Still Pretty that. I think when I got recruited to go to the CIS and go play for a UPC IN VANCOUVER. That was kind of like okay. Maybe things can kind of progressing go ahead and they gotta also the gentle nudge from my coach. There Steve Manual. That you know you can stay here but basically I'm kicking out because I want you to go play at the higher level and Sierra potential so that was kind of Mike Start off point in the program with Doug Rhymer Jesse Knight was coach at the time and they really Hannah propelled my career in and getting me onto the national team and then I ended up finishing up two more years with. Ub See we won two national championships back to back. Actually and then they went onto win for more after I graduated in a row but Selena was kind of the start of my national team career when I was nineteen and then just retired from that like a year ago. So I'm relying on your La- calendar something you said if you ride a story about your journey it will be. I believe instead a decade of venture. But when you when you wrote that in your mind what we've thinking it's just kind of funny actually because I saw graduated from U B C in two thousand nine and then a number of the national team and then went to play pro for my first season abroad. Enso's like the two thousand nine going into two thousand. Ten was my first year in Europe. I was in Spain and the Canary Islands with my teammates Page and it was just like my funniest stories of life and pro. Come from this season it was just like so ridiculous in so many ways home at Christmas. Like almost didn't come back but when back and finish it out and yeah just finding those kind of the start of my career so the last decade now as I go back and forth on wrapping up in this decade. But yet it's just been. I've been all over Europe late in the Philippines. It's been ten years eleven years with team Canada and yet it's just been a lot of adventures all over the world so I think that sums it up for me your password. Kobe just ridiculous. I've had to in that time. Also pretty full of awesome so going back to the volleyball in making the kind of play with higher compensation had you again was an adjustment to your mentality how you approached the game or the always the same I think definitely I mean developed. I think even from kind of a young age I had like sort of athletic discipline instilled into me. If you from LIKE DANCE. Three in that was like a very disciplined Pity so I think I just always kind of had that. I think that's just part of my character. Personality is kind of like the athlete mindset but definitely like as I progressed higher up in levels that kind of became more of like my dreams once I made team Canada became okay analysis become an Olympian and so that was the focus and that sort of worked towards a win to two Olympic qualifiers A. Twenty twelve in two thousand sixteen. Very narrowly missed the twenty. Sixteen qualification end. So that was pretty heartbreaking but that was kind of the goal that was like why played volleyball was always to hopefully get to the Olympics. One day and that was Kinda what fueled him what. Push me through a lot of difficult times for sure and persevered through a lot of things and a lot of crazy seasons abroad in Europe pro. And and all that but Yeah I think that was always. My dream unfortunately didn't happen but had a lot of a lot of adventures along the way trying to get

"Of all the things that might keep you up at night concerned about having a fat tongue is probably not one of them and yet Tom fat maybe depriving you of sleep at least that's what a new study says the average human tongue way is a little more than two ounces a bit more for men and women like most other parts of the body that can accumulate in your town especially in the back near your throat and according to this study in the American Journal of respiratory and critical care medicine people with overweight tongues are more likely to suffer from obstructive sleep apnea the author of the study says this seems obvious but no one looked at this before she says it's especially true for people who are generally overweight the study says if tongue fat goes down so does the risk of sleep apnea something to think about well you're drifting off

How Bill Creelman Built Spindrift

"In two thousand nineteen the World Health Organization revised its guidelines for sugar intake. SUGAR IT turns out. It's actually worse for us than we thought. Too much can be deadly now. I say this by the way as I finish this delicious sugar cookie. My kids made last night anyway. The new guidelines now suggest adults should not consume more than twenty five grams of added sugar a day. Now think about this for a moment. A single twelve ounce can of Coca Cola has thirty nine grams of added sugar. That is a day and a half of sugar. A can of coke and if you go to the movies and get thirty two ounce cup you will burn through nearly five days if you're sugar allotment before you get to the credits so what to do. Well the obvious answer is drink less sugar which clearly is advice. Lots of people are taking because the last year the sparkling water industry hit an all all time high and sales nearly two and a half billion dollars according to Nielsen. And it's why the beverage out if your local supermarket is now jam packed with with Lacroix and Topa Chico bobbly Poland Springs and Waterloo in several other brands. And it's also big players like Coca Cola Pepsi and Nestle Sleet are all pushing into the sector. One of the fastest growing independent brands and sparkling water is called spin drift and unlike virtually every other bubbly water brand out. There spend drips. Water is as basic as it gets literally just a mixture of sparkling water and fresh squeezed juice which may may not sound all that innovative. But it's actually an incredibly challenging thing to make because fresh squeezed juice does not stay fresh forever and Spitzer's founder founder. Bill crewmen took years to figure out how to make it all work and along the way he struggled to find bottlers and distributors. Who would work with them but the story story of how he was inspired to create spin drift probably begins much much earlier back in his childhood bills? Parents chose to raise the family on a farm in in western Massachusetts. His Dad worked for the sporting goods company spalding. His mom wasn't home with the family and pretty much. All the food they ate was local. The fresh thing I remember most is just all of the food seem to come from our farmer or the farms around us. So you know we had. I just sugarhouse up the street from us. We had you know milked it was delivered with a huge head of cream on the top. You know unbiased tries we would make other from that. Ah I think key learning for me was just a very clear idea of where our food is coming from because it seemed to always be delivered from our neighbors abors or or just off of our own farm You know there was local unavailable and just to be clear. I mean we're talking about like the nineteen thirties or forties. I I believe at the time of this recording. You're forty five years old so this is like the eighties. This is not that long ago it really wasn't and that's what I mean. It was really a choice. And you know. I'm not sure what the message message was. We're supposed to take away from it. I would say my mom. She love this idea of being out in the woods and being on a farm and and surviving and off of nature and she was surrounded by friends felt the same way and we had almost no rules honestly we she had this philosophy. Severe that you know have fun. Do Your own thing in be adventurous. I think she's sort of thought of the farm is our playground are self expression and and I think the thing I remember that the farm land just kind of continued in all directions and farmers to the left and right in around us and even to this stay. This neighborhood and in Western mass is really still the same way it's virtually unchanged today. Do you remember how quiet it was at night. From like December to. Let's say the end of March because I'm imagining there was so much snow. It was absorbing all of the sound at night it was just silent. Maybe a little wind I I remember that really keenly and I actually think of that often because now you know in the suburbs herbs of Boston you that level of silence that type of silence. It was really hard to find. We would keep by firewood for the most part. We had a big woodstove when that fire would burn down nothing there was really no sound left in the house. Save your breathing or the shuffling of you. You know of a sibling was it. An old house would like old wooden floorboards. Yeah it was an old redman just where you imagine a Red Farmhouse Big Red Barn creaking floorboards floorboards for sure. So I guess you knew of someone got up during the night but other than that it was. It was completely silent so So that eventually your family moved off of that farm to the town of deerfield which is also in guessing western Massachusetts and you went to high school there and then to college in Washington. DC at Georgetown. When you when you got to college like when you're eighteen years old did you have any idea? What you you want to do with your life? Now I was kind of out of the sort of grasps of western Massachusetts and I was really starting to for the first time. I What I wanted to do professionally and I should mention that kind of in high school and then as I started college I was starting to work on the fishing boats off the Cape and islands of Cape Cod or or like nantucket? Martha's Vineyard is. Is that right. That's right and you know it was just it was just magical you know you're on abode all day. You're fishing for whatever you could catch. Stripe Pass in Blue Fish And so when I got to Georgetown I really really. I was working in the summers and then going to school during the year and I started to really solidify crystallize. You know what I thought I wanted to do. which was kind of try to figure out you know business? That would be interesting to me so as I was finishing up. Georgetown I took my coast card test. And then eventually I got my captains license right after graduation and Butleigh why you were Georgetown. You met somebody who became presumably became a girlfriend today. Your Wife Life Bray is is right. That's right yeah very lucky. I'm to meet my wife Harley while we are Georgetown and we started dating when we were nineteen uh-huh and so we've been together ever ever since I'm not sure she quite knew what she was getting into way back then but while I was at Georgetown. I took an entrepreneurship class in my senior year. She she got to see me Present my first business plan so I guess she had some sense devoid. She was getting into even in the nineties. And what was your business. Plan that you pitch to the class. It was called nantucket smoke house so the idea was taking smoke fish and striped bass and other things in creating a smoke house out on island we were then offer the products from all over the US turned out to luckily not an idea. We ended up pursuing Tom. But you know the Sivas planted for sure all right so so you you graduate From Georgetown in Nineteen ninety-six. And and what did you do. Where'd you go work? So the first thing I did was go back out to an antiquated and actually continue now with my captain's license in hand continue working on the on the fishing boats. You know I was probably my fifth year and so I went out there with an idea of kind of finishing that summer and then and then ultimately going out to the Pacific northwest to pursue the smoked food world or at least learn more about it and so my wife Harley was living in her girlfriend that time living in Seattle and we piled into her sir VW and drove up the coast and basically just started hitting smoke houses and asking them. You know what the industry was like today. Play kit today. Not like it would they recommend going into it and I'll never I'll never forget finishing a tour and the guy who is leading me on the tour pulled me aside and said I mean do you favor never get into this business fish. It's fire you know. It is a shrinking industry. You know it's nothing we would recommend and was that enough to convince you it was at least enough for me to second guess it and so I am incredibly grateful for that person's advice for sure and the the business idea that ended up kind of coming out of it was company called Nantucket Harvest and untuckit harvest offered smoked food items That were already being produced. Even though it ultimately long-term not terribly successful. It was much better than where we would land right okay. So you're so you decide I'm going to go back to Massachusetts. I'm going to start a business where I basically. What like source food food from nantucket and create like a mail order business? That's right who is mid mid nineties Nantucket at all these really interesting producers serves that had gotten to know some of them over the years What were they making or what? What did they produce? Yes so they had you know it's thirty miles off shore so it kind of has some. I'm really interesting. Unique products only only really only available out there. There was already a a smoke. Bluefish Pate Really Beach Palm Jelly really interesting Zhang Jellies Bay scallops. You know lobsters ice cream so our thesis was will people love these in the summer. I bet they would love to buy him. mm-hmm the other nine months of the year and we wanted to provide them with a solution to do

So we do the winner's circle segment each week after an elite event or an open event and we've been blessed where in nearly three years. We've always had the champion come on. Did you ever think that, you know, one of these days here pretty soon, I'll probably be vast master radio talking about my win, and he opened. No way, man. You know, all of this things at all, you know, everyone buys a boat and jumps at any tournament eighty level. We all dream about this kind of stuff. But but it it just doesn't feel real to me. It's still still has been shock. So let's talk about some of the details. First of all big picture. And then we'll talk small pitcher your qualified for for classic fifty assuming of course, that you fish the rest of the opens you picked up about forty two thousand dollars in cash money. So I would think that you're in pretty good shape as far as making your entry fees. The rest of the way, let's get that out of the way you do plan on fishing the rest of the central opens. Correct. Yes. Absolutely. I've actually fished them since two thousand ten and you know, I'm gonna be the I'm always at the meetings early anyway because I worked for Toyota and Carl Hart at the I will be the front seat row for the next three. If I have to live in bubble between now, and then I'm going to be there. Have you thought about that part of it that you're gonna be in the ninety just any classic? Classic fifty. I mean, this is going to be huge. Obviously, we don't know where it's going to be yet. But does that kind of clicked in yet that part of this whole deal here? Yeah. Who knows you might you might win another open this season. But the fact that you are now locked into classic fifth. Yeah. You know, all of the stuff, man. It's it's it's been very hard to even talk about it. Because it sounds such drink come true fan. I had a dream last night about me entering the rain in my truck, and that kind of stuff man, just talk about it gives me chills. So it's unbelievable. And, you know, the classic is the the big tickets every anger wants to make and and for me to have accomplished that, you know, honestly, it just still just doesn't quite feel like it's going to happen. You know, I'll I won't let the trophy out of my sight because I'm worried someone's gonna you know, tell me this is all a joke or something. It didn't happen. Do you take it out on a boat with you? When you're guiding your guy there at Toledo bend south Toledo. You just put it like on the boat with you now. So the clients could see it just put it like in the middle between you and the passenger seat. Yeah. I think we might do that so far I've actually took it to brunch over its opera spooned resort near my wife went to brunch. Sunday morning. It came with this. I took it to the Gulf war. All nobody golf course. Actually. Toyota right now seat belt it in. I'm headed down to my boat dealership today to get some service work done on my hall, and it's along for the ride, man. It's just awesome. And I know you run a Phoenix I understand you got a little text message from Gary Klaus, the the owner of Phoenix. And of course, our best master studio is right here in our best Mr. radio studios, right here in Winchester, Tennessee, just down the street from the Phoenix plant, but who's probably kind of neat to get a little too big. Oh, yeah. You know, Gary is one of those people that I've long respected. And and you know, I I've actually been with Phoenix for ten years the first year like I'm out, Bert, forgiving them to take a shot on me when I was younger man, just getting started and all that and be a part of my team and to stick with me all these years, which you know in our industry, it's so hard to do. It's was special to me to have someone I respect so much. You know, reach out to me and talk about the help that you've gone from foster fence out of Houston were on in Houston and Walker Toyota helping you out as well on a local basis to allow you to be able to do this. Yeah. You know, those kind of sponsorship deals, and honestly, we call them partnerships. Because to me that's what we are and foster fans come on three or four years ago. It was my title sponsor for my boat. You know, they do commercial censoring out of Houston with I travel everywhere, but their train Holloway is the Amanda. And you know, that's just that's a week. We call it. A God thing he he come on guy trip with me. And we just happened in that often. And you know, next thing I know here we are four stores ship together. So it's especially show this an extra love and get them. So some, publicity and things and then Walker Toyota of Alexandria, Louisiana come on about three years ago as well. Just none of those. None of this would be possible. Especially for a local guy, man. You know, we don't get the huge national deals and things like that. So we got to work our tails off for our local people as well as we can. And those partnerships are bottle me. And like I said, I mean, I'm fringe those guys I got phone calls from those guys and not after the land, and they're excited about all this as I am. And I can't wait to share the stage. You know in a in a classic for those guys. Yeah, they're all Gleason with us. The winner from the Toledo bend central open number one over there. And he has a guide service on Toledo bend south Toledo bend guide service. And I figured you're booked up for spring because it's Toledo ban. You know? But it probably is a it's not a bad thing probably to put on a guide service website that you know, that you want to they want to central open there on Toledo bend. Correct. It's it's it's huge from a credit credibility factor. You know? And there's actually a lot of other guys legendary Tommy Martin in this event. And you know, Tommy actually said some nice words on stage may so that's just one of those things I treasure. But. When you're in the guy business, it's really hard to jump in tournaments, and you know, kind of put yourself out there, and it didn't always work out. Like it did this time for me. You know, a lot of times. I I don't do. Well, but it's great for the guy business. And you know, I'm gonna watch all we've reaching out to me through the years that efficient and shared moments on the water. And you know, again, this is just something I get to share with all of them. They're all a part of this. And it's very special. Well, let's be honest. There were a lot of big names in this event. A lot of guys trying to get their way into the classic see Powell neck, and Cox and swindle and a number of guys that were fishing in this deal. So this was a really strong field that you beat to get this get this win. Now get into the specifics a little bit. I mean, you're twentieth place fourteen pounds fifteen ounces after day one. That's not a big Toledo bend bag. But it was twentieth place. It wasn't one hundred twentieth place. But then you hit on mine after getting washed out on day two on Thursday. You go out there on Friday twenty five pound bag. Now, he's was this spot. This will haunt that. You were fishing is this. Something that you kind of say for clients is at the juice for you. When you go out there taking a client. And you know, you gotta get them. Or was this something that is a tournament spot for you know, I mean, I wish I could be super clever about this. But it was it was probably the most overlooked spot on the lake and I just got fortunate, and I checked it, and there was fish there. You know, I don't know if I've ever I think I've taken clients here before in the past, but it's just such an obvious spot. But it's a little bit out of the way. I guess it's not near some of the the real popular creeks on the lake and I felt like you would maybe get overlooked, and it just so happened that there was a great group of fish there day. One was a little windy so positioning stuff with us. And I was sharing the spot with a couple other anglers, and you know, we all just had a little bit a little bit trouble on day one catching them, but was flat. Calm and I was able to actually get their first day. And I had about ten minutes before anyone else arrived. And when the first boat was pulling up, I was lying in my first big one. And it was eight Pounder and everyone dreams of starting a day off with eight thousand first thing in the morning. You know, so it was. That was a huge for former gave me a lot of confidence and you did it old school. I mean, a strike king six t but also throw in a little bit of Carolina Reagan, which is the second time we've seen that in same thing happened in eastern open. It was some Carolina rig fish caught there as well. And a good old fashioned three-quarter ounce Vietnam football gig as well. So so it was you're mixing it up. It seemed like a little bit what you presentations. Yeah. Yeah. The the crane bait for me is is always something that I really liked to do. So so all this happened. We have I have to say this because I'm Lawrence graphs. I spent a month, Dan, Lawrence graphs when when other people were killing them on the Bank. It was so frustrating to be looking for a little hidey-hole. But all that all that time behind that graph. Just give me the confidence that that. You know, what I finally found to know that okay? I can make this one cast, and and do well, but yeah, that crank baits a huge thing when the fish kind of get up on top of the ridge and the right debt. It's just a great way to get them to react. But I tell every customer gets in my boat there. There's nothing. No other techniques. Fleet Bennett Riber puts more efficient about each year me and my customers, then then the double splash rig the Carolina rate, man. And yeah, I thought of several different VM base behind it as a trailer just happened this time, you know, I did better on the porch and and a little chopstick right up huge compensates for me..

"And and now you hold twenty eight hundred is counter for all man. So he had to go and try to collect that. And nobody had it. I didn't know what he had it. And they're not gonna pay they go somewhere else. Yeah. Yeah. So so that was one of my first lessons, you know, that you know, that anybody smoke hold you hold you bag. Yeah. So that's that's where never get high on your own supply came from. Yeah. So we went through that and say about two months, you know, house by two ounces, then four ounces in a pound in then ten pounds, and it just kept going and going, and where are you getting ten pounds of cocaine from we'll start off we start off with Mike new guy who who I introduced me. So we start off with we wasn't buying power from him was burned segments in half ounces. But after I started rolling I had a teacher, then I used to hang out with mister Fisher. And when I started selling cocaine stop hanging out with him, we stopped playing tennis and one day. I just went by the same. I was doing pretty good. You know that time of Honey had about forty fifty thousand dollars. Where'd you keep your money shoe, boxes and shoe boxes and the house to my mom's house? Oh, yeah. Well, mommy, put me out. So I didn't they with my mom anymore. I was staying with a cousin, but I still kept my money at my mom's house because I felt it would be safety shoot at. I'll meet it to come in. And. The house. You just want me to stay there. It's like just putting a pair of shoes onto the bed problems another pair of shoes. So when I told him when I was doing he told me to come by his house. And then when I got there he explained to me that he used to sell cocaine to the tennis coach or not you tennis coast teacher. Yeah. And that wow. And he didn't get all the things that he had from being a teacher like this house didn't come from teach at Cadillac. No. Because you're like, I should just become a teacher. This looks pretty sweet. This jury I got on. No. So he was moonlighting or he was done selling cocaine. He wasn't selling cocaine at that time. He was he had started to be a user. And I believe that's probably why he wasn't in a business anymore at didn't. He ran himself out of business from using of his oh, and then he went can't can't reload badly. So he just became a teacher. That's interesting career shifts. Yes. So he introduced me to the first Nicaraguans that that I met Nicaraguans of that seems because looking at that. Now, that's a strange connection. I probably know two people from Nicaragua data. They're not just walking around all over the place. Like, you can meet a Mexican person in L A, real, easy, El Salvador. No problem, it it just seems like when you meet somebody from country like that that's gone through. This has a dictator go to that transition. That's just had the ominous music starts to play in the background right at this. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I, and I didn't know what Nicaraguans were fair know about the war. I mean, you know, I'm just a young dumb kid from south central LA who's trying to make sure who's trying to help his mom get out of her situation with her house in fix the house up and had younger brothers and sisters. Who who I was worried about you know, and I just took it all myself to make sure that they was okay, they ate. So you meet this Nicaraguan guy and from your teacher, and he's like, hey, I can get you a lot more this or what I mean, how did that start? Now. You just say that he had had a connection for me. Okay. And I was like wow can engine. Yeah. I ain't got to go through Mike, no more with all of his BS and waiting and so when the guys came over we looked at stuff, and it was the best cocaine we ever seen what what made it better. It was like already in little rocks. You know chunky rings of cocaine. Yeah. Yes. What does it kilo straight off the brick is it really like a brick like you see in the movies kind of looks kind of looks like this book Ray, probably about the size of this book and uses like two slabs, sometimes it'd be one slap..
