Coinbase Launches 'Base' Layer 2 Chain

"All right guys, well, yesterday, coinbase got the crypto industry quite a flutter when it tweeted a cryptic video of a blue dot and the date two 23 23, which is, of course, today. Speculation was rampant at first, but started to consolidate pretty quickly when around half an hour after that initial tweet, the Twitter account for optimism, which is an Ethereum layer to chain, tweeted an image of two wing suitors. One had a red dot backpack, which is optimism symbol, while the other the one who was diving off the cliff had the same blue dot that coinbase had just shared. And so the speculation started to hone in on the idea that coinbase was launching something in conjunction with optimism. Still within that, there was a pretty broad band of expectations. Giga bear, for example, represented the prepare to be underwhelmed perspective. They tweeted, watched the coinbase thing be optimism USD C support, or in other words something fairly incremental. Now, on the far other end of the spectrum, was the extreme expectation of actually launching a chain and a token. Which would of course fly in the absolute face of the SEC. Moon overlord tweeted, if coinbase actually drops a token, it is about to pop off. This is how bull markets start to be honest. At first, it's the same old people on Twitter playing circus, but enough positive things happen or tokens go nuts, and suddenly people love crypto again. What if coinbase drops a token of their own token coin? Brian said literally last week, around and find out. The NT SPF, the final boss, the omega Chad? Will they do it? Investor Adam Cochran was also excited. He wrote, if there ends up being a coinbase token that AirDrops to users that saves the market, we're pulling a portion of it and creating a giant bronze statue of Armstrong with an extra shiny bald head and sending it to their office. Them is the rules. Then of course, there was the sort of in between view, represented by gamete chain who wrote, my speculation, they're making a KYC zone on optimism. Basically a blockchain you can only enter if you have a coinbase account, and they are handling access via a chain link CCP node. Institutions would love this, a KYC DeFi portal. Can still use optimism open and free like usual, but if you want to get in the coinbase layer, you got to go through their KYC, CC IP bridge, and then you get access to big institutional liquidity pools. Could be the on ramp trad fi has been craving. So what did we get? Well, ultimately it was closer to this middle perspective than anything else. On Thursday morning, coinbase announced base. It's a layer two network that is indeed built on top of optimism's OP stack. Coinbase will be joining optimism as a core developer on the open-source stack and will even be contributing 20% of sequencer revenue, which is the money they make for ordering and executing transactions, and then submitting them to the layer one chain to fund public goods.

Optimism Retroactive Public Goods Round 2

"Announced its second retroactive public goods funding round in which a total of 10 million OP tokens will be distributed to projects powering public goods on the layer two network. Retroactive public goods funding also known as retro PTF is based on the idea that it's easier to fund what was useful than to issue proactive grants for what might be useful. Optimism also introduced the launch of the citizen's house, a one person one vote based governance system, the citizens house relies on identity, whereas the token house uses a traditional governance model of one token one vote. Together, the citizens house and the token house form the optimism collective. The citizen's house is primarily responsible for allocating funding for public goods. 20% of the OP token treasury has been allocated to retroactive public goods funding. Project nominations for round two begin January 3rd to let community members who receive a voting batch will be eligible to vote for nominated projects starting on January 31st. Ledger

"Today I'm with the forest Ecologist Suzanne some art. Her research has shown that a forest is a single living organism, and this is transforming our scientific and cultural understanding of trees. She was an inspiration for the scientists at the center of Richard Powers celebrated novel The Over story. But a conversation with her also sheds light on the vitality of the living system that is a human family or society. Her book is called Finding the Mother Tree. One of the things you saw have seen in the forest is that The chemicals that are being transmitted are identical to our euro transmitters that these processes that we've only recently been able to map the human brain. It sounds like it's the same process or it's a It's a kindred process to that. They have similarities. It is hard to ignore. Um, so yeah, I mean, when I did my studies with my students, we were we were looking at carbon and nitrogen and water and how it's moving between plants and then looking at the ST geometry of Of these chemicals, these elements moving together and I realized, you know, the stock geometry was was the same as is glutamate of carbon and nitrogen. And I'm just like whole You know, it's glutamate that's moving through these orca is it And then what? And say what glutamate is, including me is an amino acid. It's got carbon and nitrogen in it. Um and that happens to also be one of our neurotransmitters. Yeah, it's essential in our bodies as well. Yes, And so I You know how is scientists? They have their their scales that they work at across scales. But I don't really cross into the scale of what the molecules are. I go from the forest down to these two networks, but I have to rely on other scientists to do that more molecular. Detailed biochemical work. And so other people had discovered that glutamate was one of the main. I mean, no assets that actually moves through networks. Yeah, it's fascinating and and Something that you also along the way realized Is that this? Way of seeing and redefining. You know what feels like discovery to us and is being discovered and kind of named in terms of scientific in scientific tabular, airy. Is actually In some ways, you could say that it's it's modern science and joining Meeting. Intelligence that has been there in traditional societies in aboriginal societies. So there have been humans who understood Didn't have this particular language, but that's also a conversation You've been having kind of around the edges of your of your own research that correct it is. You know, I've had such great fortune to you know, in the last decade to work with aboriginal scientists and an aboriginal people, I got a post doc Doctor, Teresa Ryan, who is a salmon fishery scientist. And I've been struggling so much in this western science fear with my colleagues and publishing my work and and fighting, you know, to get the interpretations accepted of collaboration and wholeness of ecosystems. And I just started talking to her, and she's like, well, our world view is that we are Part of these ecosystems that we are all connected together. We can't be separated from each other and that Yeah, collaboration is all part of it. You know that the world isn't entwined place, and she even you know, showed me this oral history and writings by a man superior, Bruce Miller of the Snohomish Nation, and he had Written about these fungal networks in the soil and and that was before these discoveries and how his people had known about these networks and how it kept the forest strong for millennia. And I'm like, Oh, my God, you know even were so We've been so narrowly focused on reductionist science, pulling things apart and then trying to understand them that we lost our way. To actually see these as whole systems. And so I was felt so suddenly accepted. You know, I felt like I belong again. You know, I don't I don't feel like I'm going to get You know, my science is going to be now I need to get on track with really moving it forward and not fighting. You know, fighting the criticism. I need to just move forward. And, uh, yeah, that was such a blessing for me. It's just opened up my whole world. And now you know, I'm working a lot with Aboriginal people and just opening up, you know? How do we work together and and viewing? You know, Western science is really just the little sister. To aboriginal science, which has been going on for millennia first so much longer. Yeah, there was someplace else. So you've been talking about some of your newer work in the near the end of the book about understanding the connection between fish and rivers and inland forests, and that that's also a connection. That has long been made in these other bodies of intelligence and practice. Yeah. So I'm working with the Hiltzik Nation, which is in the mid Coast region of British Columbia. And, um, the health sick, have a large large territory there actually. A combination of many nations. Um, but that's another story, but so we work with the house, sick nation and going to a number of watersheds that had different salmon runs. This is a long, long story, but basically what we were after, as we wanted to understand the role of salmon in forest productivity and building on work of The aboriginal people who knew about these connections between Sam and trees and themselves. And also some earlier Western science that had, you know just made discoveries that that salmon nitrogen was inside of trees and plants and insects. And so we wanted to know what was so amazing way. Yeah, it is Absolutely amazing. Yeah, you know, so we were embarking on what is the pathway? How does it How does the salmon get into these trees? And so that's why we've been unraveling That story. Mm. Yeah, That's amazing, something that that you that you often have been fascinated and amazed by and is also the The self healing properties of the forest and That these are regenerative systems in your book. You really do also You know, like the best books I think you're telling. Multiple stories together. And so the story of the science unfolding The understanding unfolding and also what you were living through as a human being. And you did have cancer. And the way I think of this as not And throughout the more fighting, but actually applying, you know. Letting different kinds of intelligence being a reciprocal relationship, right so So you experienced somewhere you said about yourself. You start to understand that we are made for recovery and that there were echoes there with and regenerative system. That is a forest that you were studying and living in. Yeah, a little bit about that. Yeah, That was an incredible learning moment for me, You know, in a very personal and visceral way. I mean, I was You know, I got breast cancer. It wasn't great. It had spread to my lymph nodes..

"Various companies began to work toward a goal of building consumer radios. The race was on for the first true commercial radio station. And it wouldn't be R c a to launch it. Instead, Westinghouse applied for a licence to operate such a transmission station. They applied to the U. S government and received permission in 1920. Westinghouse was in the business of manufacturing radios, but demand for radios was lagging behind. And so leaders of the company reason that one way to increase demand would be to create programming. Now today, that seems pretty clear that if you want to sell a technology to someone a technology that allows people to access content, you need to create content for people to access. Otherwise, they just have a useless tool. But this was a big step in 1920 radio had mainly been used as point to point communication at that at that stage, it's just that the points were undefined because there were no wires. So you know you had a receiver that could pick up a signal. That would be a point. So this would open up the possible uses for radio and allow them to become entertainment devices. It was precisely the stuff Tsarnaev had been saying In his memo Back in 1916, Westinghouse approached a ham radio operator named Dr Frank Conrad, who had already been playing records over the radio for some of his other amateur radio operator, Friends. And on November 2nd 1920. Westinghouse launched K D K A. L Love Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was the first commercial radio station Tsarnaev had been working on his own approach. Receiving the blessing of the companies that founded our CIA to do so. They gave him some funds so that he could pursue this. And on July 2nd 1921 Tsarnaev showed off the market potential for radio by broadcasting a boxing match between Jack Dempsey and George Carpentier. Dempsey was a celebrated US champion. Carpentier was a boxing hero in France, and he had a reputation for knocking out British champions. So this was a super hyped event back in 1921. Dempsey would win by knockout in the fourth round, and the broadcast was a sensational hit. Arcia began to sell more radio receivers to customers and radio stations began popping up all over the United States. The first radio commercial on record happened in August 1922 when a New York real estate developer aired an ad in New York City two years later. In 1924, there were more than 600 commercial radio stations in the United States. These were mostly independent stations, and that's when Arcia made a really big move in the industry. Partnering with Westinghouse and a T and T R C. A formed a new company called the National Broadcasting Company, or NBC, which had its first broadcast on November 15th 1926. The concept was that NBC would produce material for broadcast, which would then be sent out over different radio stations. In different regions. But the stations being part of the overall network, which was a new idea at the time, you know, create your your content in a central location and then distributed using these various radio stations. That was revolutionary. NBC had two semi independent networks under its governance shortly after it was formed, so it's split off its its operations into two networks. One was called the Blue Network, and one was called the Red Network. So you had NBC Blue and NBC Rhett. The center of the Blue Network was a radio station called WJZ, which had been founded by Westinghouse in 1921. The center for the Red Network was a station called W E, a F, which was founded by a T and T in 1923. While all this was going on, Tsarnaev was already looking at the potential future of television in 1924 Arcia transmitted the first transatlantic radio photo from New York to London. This is before the invention of electronic televisions when the early prototype TVs were largely mechanical in nature, and I talked about that in the history of television episodes on tech stuff. So there was a limited market for mechanical televisions. They really didn't make a lot of progress in the consumer market. They were very expensive. They're very complicated, and they had limited Successful results, Let's say, but the real boon would come when inventors began to create electronic televisions, and that wouldn't begin until the late 19 twenties. And when we talk about commercial TVs you're talking about two more decades. On top of that now. This is not entirely a happy story. 1929 Tsarnaev met with an engineer at Westinghouse named Vladimir Zagorec in and if you've listened to my episodes about the origins of television he knows work in is one of two inventors who typically get the title of inventor of television. The other would be Philo Farnsworth. Tsarnaev convinced Westinghouse to fund Zoric un's work and in 1930 ARCA would take over the research and is working would actually go over to R C a as well becoming our CIA employee. Tsarnaev, Seeing the power of patents wanted to run out of business. Any person or a company he felt was horning in on his action, and so in 1932 Garcia would file a patent suit against Philo Farnsworth. The case would last seven years. Ultimately, Farnsworth would win That case, and our CIA would have to pay fines and royalties to him. But by that time His health was in shambles. He had had a nervous breakdown from all the stress and I'm going to get back to start off litigious ways throughout these episodes, but bouncing back to 1929 for a moment, So this is before all of the legality issues with Farnsworth. I need to talk about another company that would play a very important part in our CIA's early history. Now, If you heard my episodes about the history of turntables, you'll remember the early days of the phonograph and the gramophone and the gramophone. I covered a little bit of the turbulent patent battles and the cutthroat business strategies that we're all part of the early days of home audio. And I'll have to do more in depth series in the future to really focus on it because it gets nasty. All but the victor talking machine company was born directly out of all that strife. Now, since this is not an episode about Victor, I'm just going to give you the super short version, which let's face it. I'm Jonathan Strickland of Tech Stuff. Super short for me is a lecture for anybody else. But let's go with it. The Berliner Gramophone Company of Philadelphia, founded by Emile Berliner. Was the company. That really was the focus of this this strife. Berliner gets the credit for inventing the first flat disc record before his invention, engineers would press recordings on two cylinders. So you had these cylinders that you had put on a spool. Essentially, that would then rotate and you could play it back on various devices. The disks were much easier to store right. You didn't have as much space as much bulk as a cylinder did. They were easier to ship and once the manufacturing process was refined, they lasted a lot longer than cylinders did as well. It took a while to get the right materials, but Once they did those disks just seemed more practical. Berliner made a deal with an enterprising manufacturer and machinist named Eldridge R. Johnson. Johnson developed a wind up spring motor for Berliners gramophones. Previously those gramophones had relied on hand cranks..

"Generously libraries built the dewey decimal system to organize their books but a finite number of books in the library. Ten thousand twenty thousand. Maybe a big library might have as many as forty thousand books in it. But it was finite if you're the librarian and you were picking books to be in the library if you were fred silverman. Who was nbc's genius programmer in the nineteen seventies. And you were picking shows to put on tv you had the same mindset which is there are constraints and the constraints revolve around the fact that you don't have a lot of shelf. Space tv network can only show one show at a time and only a few networks on the air. A library can put some books in the science fiction section. Something between asimov and zelezny but they certainly can't put every book in that section and then think about the cost to the customer. If you go to a bookstore you have to buy the book pay for it before you read it to the library short. There's no incremental cash cost but you can only take out a finite number of books. He can only read one book at a time. And so yes. We judge a book by its cover because the cost of sampling is pretty high for tv network. The stakes were far higher. Because not only are they spending millions of dollars to make a show but the opportunity cost was huge. 'cause if they made ten episodes of a bad show and didn't ignore sunk costs and random they would be losing market share to the other two networks and that market share was measured in tens of millions of dollars so these constraints all conspired to push toward the middle that the purpose of discovery was to turn someone into a fan. It's true but not to turn them into a fan based on division but to turn them into a fan based on connection there with the tv networks want is for people to watch a show. 'cause everybody else is watching it..

"Thank you welcome to the show presented by g sports. I'm your host vince. douglas gregory. What's on my agenda. What is on my agenda thanking the nhl for finely listening to fans like me. Yes yes yes i have to take. The credit foot is go back and check the historical documents. Go back in. Check the historical records. Basically go back review all of the shows that may previously in the past talking about the n. h. l. No no no no wait a minute. I'm not talking about talk. Look i'm not talking about hockey play offs. I wish seriously. I wish. But i'm not i'm not talking about any of the. I'll just say this if you know you know. And if you don't know you are about to know you bought the find out how about that you about the find out. Basically i've been saying for decades of plan decades upon decades upon decades debt. The nhl should change their model model motto. No let me repeat. The nhl should change their model. And that's an old d. e. l. changed their model how to distribute their television rights. Why is that. Why is that because with television rights being spread out amongst networks eight will give the sport an opportunity and a chance to grow. Welcome to twenty second century. Welcome to the ice age. Wait a minute. Welcome to the stone age. Yes you finally made it. We are here bring you. Aren't there come on across that bridge. It's okay it's not melting anytime soon ninety times less you believe in wait. No i can't. Nhl just thanks for filing decided to do the right thing for not only us fans us fanatics us individuals who thank. We know more than what we know we know. And that's the we pool. We know that you probably exhausted. Every tunde possible. You probably did not want any of this to happen. You probably just wanted to be comfy in comfortable where you were to picot fisher go namings. Yeah i said it but you didn't hear me so it's okay. It is cool. You fondly decided to do what most of us have been asking for most of have been begging for a long period of time. You need to spread out your product over multiple networks. Not just one not just two but more than two because with it being spread out a us fans fanatics an opportunity to watch an opportunity to be an attain an opportunity to enjoy the amazing sport. That's known as hockey and not only that you will be able to increase your revenue would increase revenue. That is a good thing. That is a good thing for everybody involved. That is a good thing for every body involve the goes up. Everything goes up and that's how it should be overweight. That's how it was supposed to be a long long time ago but beggars can't be choosy beggars can't be choosy and me being a fan me be who i am. I ain't too proud to be. I'm just happy. Did i get to enjoy. I'm just happy than i. Get to see maya hockey over more than one network more than two networks more than three networks. Basically i get to see any time. I wanna see but did not headed opportunity before yeah renou other. People can have that opportunity to share his caring and nhl. You finally decided to share. You finally decided to hear you've been at the forefront so many things in the past couple of years which is a good thing which is a good thing and thank you. Thank you for finally decided maybe being forced into choosing multiple networks to spread your product out to so the rest of us can enjoy that lovely beautiful sport. Do i mean where else can you get. The puck look. Where else can you get the hot goalie decade. That kid take you to a stanley cup. Final a speaking of stanley cup. Lord stanley copies of mazen. You can drink out of it. You can do so many things to it. But i won't bring it up here. Distill a family show distill our family program and i can't say because i need you to hear what i'm going to say next in jail. I'm not gonna take any credit for this. I'm not gonna take any credit for this. Because i don't deserve it all just want is for you to just continue to do something that you haven't been doing in a long long time. Did i've been begging other sports. to do will. Not all but a few other sports to do is grow. Grow your product and when your product's growing everybody wins. Your product is getting good. Everybody wins how does he get good. You have to see for the good. Let's let hockey teams be able to hold onto their best players and paid their best players because of the salary cap isn't going down every year. Why did he go down. Wanted to go down because of their revenue. Why because of the revenue is tied to demarcate it. Why is it tied to the market. Because the one market is whether revenue streams made it increase. I didn't too fast if i see it too fast. I just like to say enclosing. I'm sorry but it's only. Because i'm so excited i just can't hide. I don't know. I don't know.

"Your host vince. Douglas gregory. What's on my agenda. What is on my agenda on david. Come up to table in h. l. year. You thought you had learned your lesson. I thought you were going to do things the right way. In fact you were doing something that i've been begging for you to do for so so long. You know like coming to the ice age welcoming yourself into the ice age. It looks like we ain't there yet. We are not there yet. Figured it's though that the goon ary the thuggery and all of the beating up people just to beat him up. Because you can't be detained. You can't be arrested when you do some of the things that you do or wait. You allow sumba players to assault other players on ice without any real consequences. I mean if i was a criminal. I wanna play hockey. If i was a criminal dead light to fight and liked to beat up and like the gist slammed people's head into the ice and chase. The morale would a steak. I probably join h. l. Now i probably join the nhl now. Because you've shown me the way you've shown me to light by making or by accepting other people's lights being out i see the light now in the light is telling be the light is showing me that it is. Okay what about this whole concussion. Thing what about this whole settlement that you did with pass players acknowledging the fact that some things happen. Some things were done wrong. But we're not going to allow that going forward. We're going to make the game about skill. Set and skating am basically using your brain. None none so i thought so. I thought i didn't assume this. I did not assume this i was just going to give you the benefit of the doubt. I mean i was expecting the nhl to beat a kit most popular sport. You you somewhere around fifteen in fact. Mls is bigger than you are. M l s is bigger than you are nhl. And i say this with my chest out. I say this with pride because i know the truth. I know it's the truth my troop. It is not just my truth. But i thought things were going to go to right direction when you decided that having one channel one network basically national network televising your sport. I thought you had learned your lesson about only leading one network televised your station. Why because you got major deals with two networks and that mean in the long term teams can hold onto their players because of the revenue streams that are coming in and they won't have to jess break a team down every of the year because they're hitting the salary cap hitting the salary cap because they can't afford to keep their players and they have to pick and choose what players to keep players to let go in. What have you you know. Operate like a regular league. No that was the hope. That was the dream that was some of us. Four thinkers were saying like okay. This looks good. This looks great. The nhl finally gets it now. The nhl finally gets hit now is nothing else left to be they. They become the twelfth most popular sport and with a little luck he moved up in the top. Ten still for for far blah. Mls that's okay because the mls eight. The last eight in nobody watches in you hockey. Your lower end people watch you. I admit i watch. I enjoy i like i mean. There's i'm just thinking about it just making me just off filling all night thinking about it is making me feel not because there's something about pup luck and skating. Digits raises my temperature. Ma heart it. Don't skip a beat speeds up. You know what. I mean some get it some. Don't that's okay because this steel of family show and that's what it hurts me hurts me to see that you take one step forward and you take twenty step backwards. Why don't you just try skating backwards. That s quicker quicker to demise. I mean seriously. There was so much to look forward to. It was so much to expect dead announcement of the network deals paw the broadcasters for the network deals positive. There's so many good factors that i could have just pointed my did and you know how about point you know how feel about pointing.

And i don't want to share all that but you know we're working on some things the council's work on some things behind the scenes and the show is not just the podcast. It's also an event series but it can't complete that mission due to covert right now and of course it has its blog component. So we're just going to try to bring it to another level and continue to have people on the shovel and everyday people but also noble guests as well. So that's the this. "Should probably start to this discussion of the super bowl with a question which is never asked amongst americans in probably befuddles people outside of the united states. Why do we call big american. Football games. bulls. The answer to. This question is actually pretty straightforward the very early football stadiums recalled bulls. They were shaped like a bowl with a single tier of seats in particular. The tradition stems from the rose bowl stadium in pasadena california when it was built in nineteen twenty-three the tournament of roses game became known as the rose bowl game in reference to the stadium. It was a game which was played between the champions of the big ten conference in the midwest and the big twelve conference in the west coast in college football over time other cities. Seeing the success of the rose bowl began hosting special games themselves copying the rose bowl they began using the word bowl to describe their games. The cotton bowl the sugar bowl. The orange bowl in the sun bowl were all established in the nineteen thirties. The use of the word bowl was limited to college football games until the nfl adopted the term pro bowl for their all star game in one thousand nine hundred eighty one. Other games have earned the moniker bowl. After the fact if the game was noteworthy most notable was the ice bowl played between the green bay packers in the dallas cowboys in the nineteen sixty seven. Nfl championship game. The game was played at temperatures of minus fifteen degrees fahrenheit or minus twenty six degrees celsius with wind chills of up to minus forty eight degrees fahrenheit. It remains the coldest. Nfl game ever played. The super bowl wasn't originally called the super bowl. In the nineteen fifties a rival football league. The american football league was created to compete with the established. National football league. At first the league wasn't much of a threat to wherever the afl soon began competing with the nfl for college players. The afl got a television deal with nbc and was starting to be taken seriously. Dallas cowboys owner tech schramm reached out to afl owners and in nineteen sixty six. The two leagues agreed to merge the official merger would take place in nineteen seventy but before that each leaks champion would compete in end of season game which was called the afl nfl championship game. The kansas city chiefs owner lamar hunt began informally calling the game the super bowl based on a super bowl that his daughter was playing with informally. Everyone used the term super bowl to refer to the game but it wasn't officially given that name until the third game in nineteen sixty nine. The first game was between the green bay packers fresh off their historic ice bowl win in the kansas city chiefs. The nfl was seen as the elder and better league. Everyone assume that the nfl would easily beat the afl team in the end. They did exactly that with the packers. Winning thirty five to ten but the game was close at the start. The game was not sold out. Even though tickets were only sold for twelve dollars no one that the game was going to become a big deal. In fact many people thought it was just a gimmick in the real championship. Already took place two weeks before it was the only super bowl to have been broadcast by two networks. Nbc the rights to nfl games and cbs had the rights to nfl games. So both networks broadcast the game despite having to network showing the game all video. Copies of the game were lost.

Wwe is in such great shape and they're in such great shape for years and years to come with this deal but the counterpoint to that is an up. I i agree with you. One hundred percent. "At least two networks I know of Better purging talk shows because of the fact that they want to be able to have more control over the content, and they want to eliminate those who speak up about, you know, voter fraud and all this other stuff. And the truth of the matter is is it's old. It's an old story now. So if you're still hanging onto us, like telling a pee wee Herman joke, it doesn't work anymore. So you know, I tried to be as different and I try to be as up the middle is I can be because my job is not getting you to politically change your ideology. My view is is that if you have a political ideology, you better better be ready to adapt to whatever is coming your way or you're gonna have to fight against it now fighting against. It takes a lot of hard work. It takes a lot of smarts and it takes a lot of genius and most people they don't have any revelations before they decide to jump on a revolution and that's the problem we're having in this country. We were to think it out before we act If we were to do it with a little bit of intelligence, maybe things will get done. But no people think that if they run around with their strange signs of their rainbow shirts, and there And they're Confederate flags and their flags with, you know, steaks on them. That's gonna get him somewhere. No, you're just marching like Grandma and Grandpa did And nothing changed. Then it's not going to change now. You gotta utilize your head in order to make this work. No, You're right. You know if we use your name with patriots supplying, we get a discount. Right? Ground Zero ped exit? Yeah. What is it? It's uh, prepare with ground zero dot com. That's how you get your discount. Prepare with ground zero dot com. So, Yeah, that's that Automatically on, just be prepared. You know, we're looking for a voice client. We're looking for a voice and that's what you do for us, is you You speak. You know, truth? You know what I mean? People that I tried it. Just dead. Honest is what it is. It's honestly I don't know. Sometimes did that Mike Pence was not who he said he was. And you are so right. I didn't believe you about the time, man. I mean, So you know your stuff. Quite thanks for all you do, man. Oh, thank you, Chris. Thank you so much. Yeah. I mean, yeah. I mean, I run into problems sometimes where I could be wrong, and I always admit it, I say, Look, I was wrong about The election where I said, Well, first, I said, you know, everything's gonna look like Trump's gonna win. But then immediately I started believing what the media was telling me. I said yes. Hillary Clinton. First time in my whole career that I got the election wrong. And I didn't even bother to predict what their election was going to be like this time around. Because Trump was full of surprises, there's no doubt They just seemed to me that Biden seemed to clinch a lot of that. But the thing about Biden is is that he's going to surprise the very people who elected him. What I mean by that is is that the old school Democrats are gonna be fine with Biden. It's the younger Democrats that thought that they were doing something to make change. They're going to freak out because buying is not gonna be the guy. Make that change possible. It's going to be people like common Harris, and that's really gonna be waiting for Jesse in Texas. You're on ground zero. Yes, I'm going. Good. Good. Good. Good. All right. It was two things here. I won I didn't need direction that the country cannot lead into white by the by the administration is going to be one of a brainwash them. We're already a brain Watch nation, Jesse, but but you know, it's it's more in your face and the people that actually hit that way. It's like when you have an abusive parent tells you that happening. It never happened. Yeah, well, yeah, You're right. They're gonna It's not gonna be the weary of brainwashed nation. We're gonna be a gas. Lighted nation they're gonna like you say they're going to show you something. And you say, Well, this is not what you're seeing. And and s. So it's It's basically manipulation and abuse is what it is. Hopefully, I'll give you two examples. One You know, and the conditions under people or, you know, I'm not homophobic at all. You know when it's ready, and when it's in your face in the spoon, pounded into your head. And you know, instead of taking care of Americans or China, send money or toe, nose and countries for gender studies. You know, you know how the team people Middle Eastern that I, you know, Okay, Secretary, I don't think they're gonna be too cool about it. Well, Trump made it a lot made it. A lot of the countries like that, you know, they should be punishable as as a a capital crime if they discriminate against homosexuals in Middle Eastern countries. And that nobody pays attention and stuff like that, because people are so concerned about their hate trump. You know, and using her started, I voted for Trump. But here's the thing. This is how bad Hispanics or brainwashed turned of history is the first thing they'll tell you Tramp of the races, but they never give you an example. Here's the other thing. People. This is a key factor that a lot of people forget. You know that Obama has has the highest quotations off any president in the U. S. It's true Cruises Vice President Joe Biden. Exactly, but who wrote it? But you gotta understand who wrote the crime bills? Who was the guy that was responsible for all of these people of color behind bars? And who was the prosecutor? Come out of heaven. Harris was Yeah, everything that these guys say they were against. They voted for Exactly And another thing. A lot of people are so proud about Tamara Harris, a person of color you keep her husband's wife. Yeah, everybody, there is white and tomorrow here isn't she was president stellar. She prosecuted a lot of African Americans for small drug us often. Yeah..

"And today we are talking about a paper tyler wrote and presented at it was presented at nanna great <hes>. It will be presented at india says in february okay. India says in february cool about peer locking and flex ceiling. Bjp against route leaks is the name of it and so let's see so. Let's just begin with the beginning. Why did you write this. Yeah so i. I mean we wrote it so i have a couple of co authors <hes>. Are guys in my lab. Jared smith and our advisor <hes>. Max shoe card so just going. It's going to shout them out but <hes> <hes>. The reason we wrote the paper <hes>. The reason we did the study <hes>. Was there were some <hes>. Other bjp studies one from within our own lab that was a an attack paper that relied on as manipulation and bgp and another paper <hes>. <hes> had to do with <hes>. Hijacking attack and bgp that also used poisoning or <hes>. Path free pending. And so we were. We were running. Into some of these advertisements for these experiments <hes>. These previous experiments <hes>. Were encountering filtering and we wanted to look at where that filtering was taken place and lie so it it was a we. Were just trying to fill out an obstacle that we encountered in in prior studies. So what do you mean by your counter. filtering you mean like s pat filtering or the routes just weren't getting through someplace what's right so in general there's <hes> there's something called a path pre pending you can do. Bgp because <hes>. Bjp doesn't care what you say about is <hes>. Once you put it out into the fabric of the control plane it'll be propagated so you can do something called path pre pending where you tag <hes>. <hes> other is in the real path before your own in an announcement and send it out and of how loop detection works in. Bjp by gaining this as path or a foreign asean. You can 'cause people selectively to drop these route so in general except for the people who you want to drop these routes expected these these poison pass will be propagated throughout the control plane throughout all the different networks that make up the internet but what we found was sometimes they weren't. They weren't making it where we where we expected them to go and we were looking into wine. And i think. That's what i mean when i say filtering just these networks were not propagating. These poisoned path as we as we expected them to. Okay so that's interesting so when you talk about filters you weren't expecting you're thinking about things like no peer or just even community based filtering of some kind right or path right right or or we had done an experiment where we we made an extremely long advertisement where repented like two hundred ss or something like that and then and then you run into some like link filters and things of that nature but <hes>. We we we. In this case someone was actually filtering on the path. A it appeared. So that's that's what sort of what <hes>. What spurred the study okay and so you started studying just like why were these as being dropped like when you're trying to figure out the policy or you're trying to figure out i mean like what the policy why the why the operator in question might be dropping these paths or were you just trying to figure out like interesting just curious a couple of reasons. One is the odd to see in. Bgp it's kind. It seems like the wild west sometimes where you can put just about anything out there and expected to get somewhere and we were actually encountering filtering so it was interesting for that reason. Just wise this happening but <hes>. Yeah i think we had a couple of main thrust one. We wanted to see where the filtering was actually happening. It wasn't clear because of our <hes>. Points of observation on the control plane. You who actually was doing the filtering but it looked like bigger networks than the policy. Y what what about. These poisoned routes were were <hes>. Suspicious or triggering filters okay. So you move from that to thinking about route linking. How did that happen right. So we were investigating. Why these paths. Were being filtered. And i'm looking for different systems or or doing some research asking people some operators why they might be filtered and one of the things one of the reasons is that we heard was well because sometimes they look like route leaks. We found this system appear that was designed to prevent route leaks but the way it worked also also touched on. as paths so <hes>. We we kinda came into it from that from that perspective from first we were looking at why these poison pets being filtered probably because they look like route leaks to these systems. Were designed to

Democratic National Convention TV Viewership Drops On First Night Vs. 2016

"Million tuned in for the first night of the virtual Democratic Convention on one of 10 networks. That's down from nearly 26 million who saw the first night of Hillary Clinton's nominating convention four years ago. MSNBC and CNN. The two networks that aired the infomercial like show in its entirety, had the biggest audiences. The Biden campaign claimed some 10 million watched the live stream of the event. Although those numbers can't be independently verified. The pandemic has forced both political conventions in tow. Never before seen formats.

"Like the the only innovator because I know but let me ask for the people are going to be listening. Fox is the only one that's innovative anything over the last several years. In my mind, they've changed the way show. How frequently shot tracers us? They have done so many good like really long segments of commercial free. They've given you audio. That's better than anything. We've gotten in in TV and they've shook up this infrastructure. That's heavily tied to CBS and NBC. That is an issue especially with like tour run events. Events just commercial load and everything like that it's been the best viewing experience I think to watch golf on Fox. Some people love the commentary for that address horrible first year. How far they've come so far and they are like they are the only ones that seem to be proactive in getting ahead of the curve and trying to be be different, and now we're back to just these two networks again. Maybe Johnny Come Back Oh. It's for sure back. Later it seemed like also the that Fox treated like a loss leader. Yeah, you know it was like a prestige play for them and now that. Now with NBC. It's you know it's like I. Don't know if Fox had an owl or NBC. You know it's like is the US usgs taken a big financial hit to you have no. frigging blank check from Fox. How the economics of that word is basically came out like ninety one million. Know what it was I just don't know how I don't either I. Don't know how that I hope somebody's keep an eye on the amateurs and the lower level events. I thought I love. Oxyde cut-back on that the last couple of years, which was disappointing. Because nobody else. It's there right, so nobody else can pick it up and we're like even like us, open sectionals golf channel used to treat it. In all its glory golf's longest day, and they did studio shows i. was doing a lot of that to SLURP THE USDA to try to get the next rate steel, and they really like blew it out of the water this one year, and then the US. Mark Irvine on the State of Marketing

"Good Morning. Welcome to marketing over coffee. I'm John Wall today. Our guest is Mark Irvine. He's the director of strategic partnerships. At Word Stream. GonNa talk to us about what's going on in the advertising space and we are going to focus a lot on cove nineteen in what's going on. He's done a bunch of research on how this has affected searches. And what's going on with all the ad networks so we're excited to have him with us here today. Mark thanks for joining US John. Thanks for having me. This really exciting. Let's take a step back. Talk to us about Word Stream. What do you do and how did you get there? So Word Stream is an online advertising software that agencies and advertisers alike use to manage their advertising across Google search display Microsoft Bing facebook and instagram and so effectively. A lot of what people do online is a lot of repetitive tasks. In terms of how you go about managing ad campaigns what we do is we try to supply. Yeah that's really the big thing for me when finding out about you guys and talking about what you do is just that as a marketing department gets bigger. You reach that point where you've reached the first milestone where you have one person that you're just kinda like okay you become the ads guru and they're the ones that are doing the testing and learning what's working and not working but then they hit a point where they have to roll them across all the different networks the different channels and it reaches this point where it's completely unmanageable you know. They're spending like an hour of each day in each of the tools and you guys are an alternative to that. Did you see a specific point when somebody finally just cries uncle and comes to talk to you? Is there any specific place where you tend to see people give you a call? Yeah you know. It's really interesting. Because a lot of the businesses we primarily work small businesses and a lot of the people who are working with. They're not just in charge of that one ad campaign but they're also doing email and they're also doing seo and quite frankly a lot of these small businesses they're oftentimes the owner or someone who's out in the field at the same moment in time what you can't do as you operate business what. I've learned I can't do effectively. I can't manage. People manage business manager ad campaigns and do a task all at the same time. If you're just learning paid search or if you're just learning online advertising we specifically focus on okay. Here are the seven things that you need you every single week to be successful on Google Bing facebook and as you go about adding to that yes of course google and being or Google and facebook. They all share similar concepts online. But how you go about making sure. That your touching all of your advertising equally in effectively is a learned task. Yeah I do love that idea of. It's not just. It's not a system for experts where it's a power tool that someone would go in and do all of this kind of stuff but it's really an expert system in that it's reaching out proactively using okay. Here's the things you gotta get wrapped up this week if you want this to work and and it kind of puts people on the right track. That's interesting to me though that it does go all the way down to kind of smaller businesses and people who that's not their whole job so I actually Kinda come in a lot earlier in the cycle that I thought was the case. Are there any guidelines as far as spend or like how much of the marketing mix is coming from advertising? Are there any stats there? As far as when somebody can reach this point you know we often see. We do have people who've never advertised before we have agencies who are just beginning to offer paid search to their Seo clients or what have you. They're just beginning to get in the paid search space. Broadly across the board. When I talk about thirty thousand accounts we see an average spend of about a thousand dollars a month so it's still relatively small across all of their networks but beyond that we take small businesses and we also have some some larger guys as well who use the platform for for time management just for honesty and credibility. It's one of those things that paid searches so simple to get started at so simple to feel like you know what you're doing and in that same process just dangerous enough to be bad at one of my favorite hobbies to do a google search for hotels and in your local city and then go and do the same search on bing and you'll see like expedia or priceline or these large brands off have very different ads across those two networks oftentimes inaccurate ads between the two. So it's very easy to have a large budget and still be unsuccessful on a network. Yeah Yeah I can understand that you are kind of all over the place and it's interesting to me to that it's great. That is all the way down at that thousand dollar a month price point. Because that's definitely doable for for small businesses. Especially if they're able to get a return it only a thousand dollars then. Yeah it seems like you WanNa get up and running as quickly as you can and get to the point where you're not worried about the logistics. But you're actually you know testing ads and getting some useful tweaking exactly. Logistics isn't the thing that gets anyone who has a bed in the morning. So whatever you can do to make sure that you're going in and making changes that are effective in your ad copy rather than just pressing a series of buttons and Google ads or facebook. How can you go about making change? That's GonNa Affect Your Roi. Okay now another interesting thing with your background that I wanted to touch upon love to hear about just kind of how you got to where you are but a big part of it. Is You know your data scientist for a number of years. So you have the background that that we love to talk about people kind of getting in playing with the number so tell us a bit more about your role as data scientists and how you got over there. Yeah it's really interesting. I at ridgely had no interest in marketing when I first started my career. I actually majored in math because my mother told me that. If you'd be willing to do people's math you'll always have a job. And so lo and behold I found my holden in marketing a world where traditionally people were not mathematically your data and I joined word stream about seven years ago and at the time word stream had a still a whole lot of thousands of individual clients. We had a lot of data. But what were we doing with? That data was unique to the individual account. My role as it is. Scientists was really investigating not just the role with an individual accounts. But what was going on across thousands of accounts win at change happened when the Google Surp- changed when new ad copy was tested. When they google start running out with new tests or started watching new ad formats. There are changes that people see in terms of the numbers and anecdotally. Everyone has some sense of what's going on their own account but what's going on at large. We suddenly became the largest data repository outside of Google to begin to run those numbers so I spent six seven years at word stream really just running the numbers under saying the trends in terms of what made someone successful with their online advertising our own client set and as a had all that data as I understood all of that started working closely with the individual ad networks with our partners at Google with partners Microsoft with their partners that facebook. And so now. I'm having Lengthy conversations about the changes that they're having and how I think it's going to impact our SNB's sweet

"Whether you're an established name a brand new startup right. Now has a television this listen to the radio. <hes> has played a record. Well thank R._C._A.. For that or C._A.. Is a name that many of us older folks oops remember. They were so dominant the <hes> the company was started by David Sarnoff. I am sitting here with Tim Sarnoff David Sarnoff grandson to talk about the legacy of R._C._A.. which is now a hundred years old? Tim Come a little closer to me and just re just spit out some of the multiple dimensions that came from R._C._A.. Well R._C._A.. Back in nineteen nineteen was really focused on radio and what was important about radio radio in one thousand nine thousand nine hundred and it's hard for people to sort of grasp a world without it but before radio the only way you got news was through either the newspaper which was mostly local newspaper or walking not driving. I'm walking to the nearest town and the average person only walked one day away so the news you got was as close as one day aways walk and frankly when radio came along it brought the world to everyone so significant invention initially was to bring the world to everyone's living and between Nineteen nineteen through nineteen twenty six that was sort of haphazard until N._B._C. was created under our C._A. and it. It was the first network to bring the news from all over the world into your living them R._C._A.. Sold the first radio had the first network that actually spawned the set on the second network which was A._B._C.. That's that's true. It was <hes> the red network in the Blue Network and then a year later was C._B._S.. <hes> so there were three dominant networks there were a number of them that came up and disappeared over fifty year period but those were the three that basically were maintained until cable came along and had the first TV well R._C._A.. During that time in Nineteen twenty-three started developing the T._v. with his work and on the side were a number of other inventor inventors. There was Farnsworth who was inventing a version of of <hes> electronic T._v. and all of the functions of those inventions had to be culminated into a business so the real invention of T._v. wasn't the T._v.. Itself but the business to actually manage the T._v.. The broadcast system that had to be set up there was an antenna that was put up on the Empire State Building that was the structure of creating call letters and times for the <hes> stations to actually not interfere with each other there was the advertising system television was more than just a box television was an industry industry and R._C._A.. Spent about fifty million dollars from nineteen twenty three to nineteen thirty nine to develop the first television business and then there was records and record player well yes of course C._A.. Had acquired through Marconi Tony Victor talking machine and Victor Records and they also owned R._C._A.. Music Label R._C._A.. Also was very much focused in newer high technology so when the tube which was probably one of the greatest inventions. Inventions of the twentieth century was vacuum tube and that allowed all sorts of other inventions to occur until silicon chip came along and the semiconductor in the second half of the twentieth century and it was able I'll bet enabled everybody to miniaturize all of the pieces of the electronics so that you could fit an entire world of electronics inside a small box during the thirties and forties after television was starting to really really become a reality for the rest of the world are then spent a disproportionate amount of its treasure about one hundred million dollars to create color television to add little fidelity in reality to television system and even in the sixties sixty s when television was ubiquitous across pretty much everywhere the notion of trying to slimline the television by creating a liquid crystal display rather than having it in a tube and the notion of trying hi to transfer with fiber rather than just over the air and the notion of setting it up on satellites rather than having it go terrestrial. We're all focused as R._C._A.. From the fifties sixties and early seventies and then G._e.. Bought R._C._A.. In the eighties and today day R._C._A.. Is a memory for many of us even though the brand name is owned by technicolor. You'll talk about that in a minute but what happened what happened R._C._A.. Why did it fall apart well? It didn't fall apart. It was acquired. It was acquired by G._e.. And and what G._E.. Acquired was R._C._A.. And all of the companies owned underneath the banner which included N._B._C. and Hertz rent a car and banquet foods and say records and R._C._A.. Records and <hes>. Patents thousands and thousands of patents for inventions that are C._a.. Had created over the first half of the century and there were <hes> many people who still thought of R._C._A.. From what what it was which was sign of quality and invention and there are many

Mars 2020 Rover Assembled and Tested for Launch Next Year

"No minimum listenership to start making money with anchor. So if you wanna make a little bit of money while having a cool podcast while download the crap or go to anchored up f m to get started. So the Mars twenty twenty Rover is still there's more things that's gonna go on with this stack. They have to stack it up. They have to put the things in order in order to make sure that everything fits properly, and then they have to unstuck it. So the Rovers in their while va dummy Rovers in there, and they have to take it out. They have to unassembled everything. And then they have to put the regular Rover back in there. The real Rover back in there to make sure that everything works with the real Rover as well. They'll do some testing. And then and only then once it pass those tests it'll be ready to launch to Mars in twenty twenty. A NASA spokesperson said until the hold down bolts on the atlas rocket blow in a Rover is headed to Mars in July of twenty twenty. There is almost always something being assembled tested or modified. Now, let's get into the brains of the operation the brings of the Rover the Rover compute element the RC. E? There's two of these things on the Rover. Now, that's for redundancy of one bringing goes down somehow doesn't work. There's always going to be a spare brain in the remote compute element interfaces with engineering functions of the Rover over two networks which follow an aerospace industry standard designed especially for the high reliability requirements of airplanes and space crafts and this thing will directly interface with Rover instruments for exchange of commands and science data. So without these two brains. None of the science would be happening in this Rover assembly for the March twenty twenty mission while they have cameras that are going to film, everything the entry descent in lane. Ding cameras will capture better than ever recordings of the events that deliver the Rover to the surface of Mars. They have up look camera to record. The parachute. They have a descent stage, which looks down that will view the Rover from above. It has an uplift camera another one that see the descent stage in operation as lowers the Rover from the crazy sky crane, and they also have down look camera that will be viewing the ground underneath everything. These cameras will be recording. What happens when the Rover actually lands how much sand and rock is blown into the atmosphere by the retro rockets. How does the landing system move is the Rover nears the surface, and how do the wheels and legs respond when the Rover finally puts all its weight down on the surface of the red
