Getting to Know Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States

Getting to Know Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States

"Let's dig in. This was a speech that was given by Gerald Ford president of the United States in 1977. It was January. It was his State of the Union, and I think he went ahead and took it to the State of the Union because Gerald Ford has an interesting perspective of being the only person ever to serve as president. And vice president, both, and never be elected to those offices. He was a member of the House of Representatives when Spiro Agnew resigned from the vice president. He was appointed by Richard Nixon to become vice president after Richard Nixon resigned. He taking again through the Twenty-fifth Amendment became president of the United States. So he serves as the only person to have ever served as president of this country without actually being elected. We've had some who have ascended to those roles, but if they actually served, if they serve later, they were actually president, but this was one in which he was actually appointed to the vice president's role, not elected to that vice president's role. So in moving up, it makes it makes an interesting anomaly in history. But it also sort of fits one Gerald Ford. If you look into his background, you look into where he came from. He's a midwesterner, raised in mission, Grand Rapids, went to school at the University of Michigan, played football there was a star football player. In fact, one two national titles there undefeated football teams at the University of Michigan after that went to Yale law school and then served in the United States Navy during World War II came out and began his service in the United States House where he served over 25 years before he was picked to be vice president and president.

Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez deliver moving inauguration performances

"Inauguration musical performances are tricky but lady gaga jennifer lopez and garth brooks. Did exactly what we needed them to do. By stephanie's jaric when lady gaga the first performer. At the inauguration of president joe biden and vice president kamala harris step toward the podium to sing everything about her that tropical red poof of skirt. The colossal golden dove perched on her shoulder that milk made from moma hairdo. Was celebratory announcement. Welcome to the modern age. Though the road ahead is rocky we no longer need to live and dread gaga living completely in the moment had arrived to point the way toward the future inauguration musical performances in their need to balance solemnity with jubilation are always tricky propositions but the biden harris performances from gaga. Lo and garth brooks performers from disparate backgrounds and different disciplines struck a note. Unlike any we've previously heard let's call it a sigh of relief building to a cheer of exaltation. even the cloud strewn blue of the washington sky seemed key to the moment and to this particular event taking place in a spot where just two weeks ago a bunch of clumsy if dangerous insurrectionist took a run at democracy and failed jennifer lopez was the centerpiece performer. But let's talk about her. First emerging all white chanel. She projected confidence civil woman who has worked her way to the top of her game. White everyone likes to note is one of the colors of the suffragettes. But it's also the color of working people in machine washable cotton and the color of luxury and dry clean only silken wall in this remarkable. Hi lo j. lo outfit replete with snowy gibault possibly a not to the garb of our founding fathers lopez. Saying a remarkable song. This land is your land. It was written in nineteen forty by. Woody guthrie allegedly and shabby hotel room just outside of times square. Not on the six but in close enough for lopez to sing this song a protest anthem but also an irrefutable declaration of belonging with so much conviction and boldness is to bring guthrie's intent and his dream full circle. This is in america. He couldn't have imagined. So terrible in some ways yet so radiant and others here is where woody and his work shirt meets a dazzling latina artists from the bronx who represents not just in terms of any monetary success but in her sheer awesomeness. Everything that an individual is free to strive toward in america. Lopez's version of the song wasn't a reclamation. You can't reclaim something that already belongs to you. And as she segue into the song we sometimes think of as our second national anthem. America the beautiful she reaffirmed that sense of ownership and pride and a breakout moment she shouted out in spanish words that translate into one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all. But you didn't need to speak the language to know what she meant.

French President Macron isolating after positive coronavirus test

"Steve Inskeep. Good morning. Emmanuel Macron. The president of France has tested positive for the coronavirus. MPR's Eleanor Beardsley is in Paris. Hi, Eleanor. Hi, stave. How is he? Well, he said to be fine so far, but he has some symptoms and the Elysee Palace is that's why I gotta test this morning. He's going to be isolating for a week, and he's continuing his schedule of meetings today but by videoconference, and obviously he's canceled his lunch for today. Now his wife, French first lady Brigitte Macron, is also in isolation. She's a bit older than he is. She's 67 My call is 42. You know, French media is all abuzz now about who he could have gotten it from and who we may have given it to, and the French prime minister has already gone into isolation. And so has the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, who had lunch with Macron on Monday. He's said to be isolating until Christmas Eve. Okay. How seriously had the French president been taking the virus? Steve very seriously. He's had different approach than some of the other world leaders who have gotten it like Boris Johnson, British Prime minister. Our President Donald Trump and the Brazilian president. Fireball so narrow to name a few. They were very cavalier. They even poo pooed it. They never wore masks. Macron is always seen wearing a mask. You know, he's stressed that every decision he's made has been with huddling with the country's top scientist, Steve not really not not literally huddling then when good, but anyway, you talks with them going exactly And you know, France has been one of the hardest hit countries in the world and in Europe right after Italy and Britain with deaths, it's been bad. The country's just come out of a second national lockdown that reduced the daily rate from 60,000 to 14,000 cases a day. But people are still being urged to take precaution. There's an eight PM overnight curfew now, in effect, people are being told where your mask at the Christmas dinner table, you know you go outside. You don't see anybody who's not wearing a mask, even outside in the streets. And I think you know, the Elise a palace is emphasizing the fact that macron someone extremely careful who's closely watch. He's still got it. That means the virus is still out there circulating everyone is vulnerable circulating. Although 14,000 cases a day that's a much lower rate than the United States, even when you adjust for population and so forth, Francis Not in the worst position in the world, but still here they are with the president. Testing positive are the French authorities in a position to distribute a vaccine soon as we're seeing in the United States and Britain and elsewhere, well, watching that going on in the U. S and Britain everybody wants to hear the government has outlined his strategy. Elderly homes, first health care workers to By the end of the spring, it says, you know, all non vulnerable public will be vaccinated. You know, the European Medicines agency. That's the use equivalent to the FDA has not approved of icing the vaccine, the father buying tech vaccine, It's going to be done soon. France already has more than a million doses on order for the end of December. The EU and macron they want to for that. You two start vaccinating, you know, simultaneously altogether very important Symbolic. Germany has mentioned the date of December 27th so it may be taking place around them. But in the French case, they're just saying, we have our own process. We want to be careful. Here. We need a few more days and weeks. Is that right? Well, it's the European Medicines Agency that has to to to approve this vaccine, and everyone is waiting on that right now, and people are starting to trumpet the bed. It needs to happen soon. But you know, everyone is told him to told to be very careful until the vaccine comes. But it is being promised this month. They're gonna began vaccinating Eleanor. Thanks. Thank you, Steve. "My guest today is really going to take me back to a debate. I had A few months ago with randall. Rouser known as the tentative apologised where we talked about is is it rational to believe in christianity order the christian faith. Rational and. I'm excited to have him today. So please join me. In welcoming cooper right here to the podcast he cooper. Thanks for joining me today. Thank you david for having me on so in the pre show you were telling me you actually heard that debate that i had with randall right. Yeah so i was a little frustrated by both of our performances. In that debate to be honest with you felt like we kept talking past one another. I didn't feel like i was able to get my point across. He kept sort of the thing with randall. And i like him by the way. We follow each other on twitter. We share a lot of the same political views. I like randall. But being in like a match with him or some sort of discussion like that specifically some sort of formal debate. He tends to want to be the wrath. While he's fighting and throw a bunch of flags and say that i'm committing fallacy and a fallacy of rather than dealing with the actual discussion. And i i find that frustrating. Sometimes and i felt like. That's what kept happening. He kept telling me that. I was arguing for something. I wasn't arguing for. He wasn't really adhering to rappaport rules and it was it like an uphill battle to me but What did you think of the discussion david. I'll tell you one of the sympathies. Have with a lot of debate. Is one of the things that i met can be. Frustrating about debating is is. They often like to have very elaborate answers to a question that should have a pretty simple response whether that be a yes or no question or something that that is more directly related to the question you asked instead. They might have a habit of where they wanna about something else. So it can circle to something different. So i i kinda saw some of that going on debate. Which is where. I kinda sympathize with your position. Navigating that Of course you know. I do like randall as well I think he has some phenomenal ideas But i i understand why you probably would have been frustrated by some of that debate. I think my biggest thing. And if i were talking to him by the way i would say the same thing so i'm not you know. This is all public eye problem. Saying what i would say to randall but In fact i was getting ready to do a charity. Thing and randall jumped all over in wanted to be a part of it was going to help me raise money for someone. He's he's an absolutely one. Forgot that the thing that the curveball. I couldn't get around. Seemed to be that i kept saying. The belief itself is an irrational belief. Because it's never happened before know dead people. Don't come back to live and die if you have faith. That's fine say it's on faith but to say it's rational doesn't make sense. He would then say. You are calling christians irrational and i kept saying no no no. I think rational people can occasionally have things that they believe. That are irrational. Without making the person as a whole an irrational person they they with rationality day in and day out. They walked to their cars. They put their key in their door before they open. They don't just repeatedly tried to walk through it and say something's wrong with my door. They use rationality all the time. And i felt like he was trying to make. It seem as though i was attacking a people. When in fact i was just saying the idea itself doesn't follow basic logic and reason and i hope i made myself clear in that but from randall's responses in the moment that it didn't seem like i was successful in doing so. Yeah so on that particular issue when you look at. Is it rational to believe something whether or not someone is rational or irrational. Doesn't really matter what matters is the way they come to such belief rational And so you know. In that position out of argued why think a believing in a resurrection would be rational Or why come to that conclusion. Be rational in order to disprove the point. Okay so so so before before we get into that Tell us a little bit about you. What is your background. What is your denomination In in how how did you get involved with things like this. Like reaching out to even you know here an a podcast or to be an atheist speaks with believers like like. How did you find me. Are you a part of an apologetic ministry. Like what's your what your story so probably one of the more significant qualifiers for myself if you would is did collegiate. Debate didn't high school to for about five years. And i've won two national competitions in debate so my overall personality is one that likes to be a to likes to question who likes to discuss in. Who has an earnest desire to figure out what is true. And what's false. So you're you're in literal debate champion. Yes yes says. I've won two national titles as a as someone who did debate. Yeah

"Maybe it's somebody in your family. You Khun dictate the topic. That's right. Right. So, uh, check us out on Twitter. This is where we want those videos. It's at the Vegas take its very easy 10 or 15 seconds of your time to do it posted on Twitter and, Ah, we appreciate it. And it's a way for our fans of the show to be interactive with us. And also a way for you to get a little bit of airtime without just being a caller. But actually a guest. And JD will attest to the fact that I do treat guests sometimes different than callers sometimes so, no, I'm I'm not mean to guest unless they're mean to me. But anyway, we're taking your calls 25753. 96. What did you think about the pregame rituals? Black lives matter stuff and not just about the NFL last night, But just in general, Let's goto Herb Herb, You're next on the Vegas Take what's going on with supper. How you guys doing here? I kind of agree with you. I don't think that Born was proper at that particular time anyway. No, that was a show of unity. So hurt. Can you explain why you don't think it was proper? What's your reason for saying that I think they be explained in extremely well. I think that people are very, very sensitive about Mix in politics with sports. They're really, really sensitive. And I know you're saying, Brian. They shouldn't even watching that. It should come to the games later. Something like that. But, you know, I think that people are very sensitive. They don't wanna Involved politics too much with sports, But let me ask you guys this. Don't answer that. I don't know if you noticed, but just before they went on the end of the play by play right after the they did the arm lots and everything on the field, Cris Collinsworth. Had they had the last thing he said. He agreed with everything that I pray is that he's behind amount of sense. But he said, this is the last thing I'm gonna say about this, and I got the sense that Chris Connell's work was like, Okay, I'm playing games. Let's talk about gay now. That's a gift that I got. Maybe you need to go back and take a look. I didn't hear that. I don't know what started that. But that's the attitude and the look on his face is what I got from that. Okay, why I'm not. I'm not ready to go with the game and then talk about the game. That would be that, But he was there for a while, and I think a lot of things a lot of fans and a lot of viewers also shared that same sentiment with Cris Collinsworth. Okay. Well, I don't know, which probably helped the ratings in the viewership. Okay, well, I I'm not going to try to reach inside of Collinsworth's head. I know one thing. He's not a political commentator. He's a sports commentator, right? But but I'm not going to look at a facial expression all I can go by the things that, Collinsworth said, and that is that he was for what the players were doing and I'm going. I'm going and I'm not saying that he's not all up in that. I think he was ready and and you're right. He is the fourth commentator and not a political complicated, but he was ready to go with the game. Well, that's his job. That's that's his job. I don't blame him. If that's what he thought, Herb. I appreciate the phone call. I got to get to some other callers. By the way, the number 2575396 we're talking about the chief's last night. NFL week one Did anything before the game bother you. We had Alicia Keys singing the black national anthem. I thought you did a great job. We had players locking arms. And then we had a bunch of chiefs fans booing, which I thought was ah, lack of class intelligence. Whatever you want to call it, 2575396 let's go to Steve. Steve is next up on the Vegas Take Steve. What's going on Substantive morning, guys. Uh, I want to have a problem with the lift up every boy song. I think that's pretty cool. Time. It didn't matter what color you are or what? Create yaar. Whatever. I mean, Every boy should live it up. I don't like being called the black national anthem because I don't like the idea that there's two Americas one works for me and one work writing exactly exactly And and I think that What do you want? Exactly what you're saying? There's a lot of people nationwide. Therefore, in the exact same one, why does the United States have to have two national anthems? One for me, one for those that are that are I guess. Why didn't one for those of you agree with Steve? Let me respond. But let me respond cause I disagree with both of you. Okay, First of all, Steve, I don't speak for black people, but the black people that I do speak to tell me this. They would say to you that they feel there are two different Americans. They don't want to feel that way. But they feel there are two different Americas. Why? Because why is it that you know, black people are getting pulled over for no reason by law enforcement. Why is it that black people are being followed in stores because of the color of their skin, and somebody might think that they might shoplift? Why is it that that is the case? Why is it And I think they feel that way, and they want to be treated as equals The many of the black people that I speak to on a daily basis they tell me they don't want to America's theywant everybody, but they feel like there are two Americas. Does that make sense, Steve? I don't identify with not a black guy. All right. I want I would like a instead of the black national anthem. I would like to try and make one the one that way already have. I'd like to make it better. I don't I don't agree that anybody should be treated like that. But I'll tell you, Brian, I've been in a place in his country where like I I'm just I'm just in areas that they are. So you think so? Do you not believe so You don't be one of those people that does not believe that there's racism in our policing. I believe there's a race among old site where you're at. So you think so? You think all right, So you think black people are killing innocent white people? You think a Derek shall Vin. There's a black guy out there. That's putting a neon an innocent white person's neck. So you think that this is happening? Black police officers are treating white people that way. Are black people are black officers treating like people differently. I'm not talking about the police, but well, that's the whole reason. Okay, but, yeah, OK, I appreciate the call Steve. But that's the whole reason why these players are doing what they're doing. We're talking about policing in America to five. So you're saying that that anecdotal individual racism that may in some cases like what happened and In Arkansas County with Todd right, who was the police sheriff and then also Mama robbery in small town Georgia Yet that in those places I believe there were there was systemic racism. But anecdotal cases of police brutality that may or may not have been routed in race should not result in the idea that there's two different Americas. Brian Ahmad Armory wasn't wasn't race That wasn't right. No, he was his was absolutely raised. Okay. You said may or may not have been right. So I'm not talking about George Floyd. I'm talking about Jacob Blake. Okay. Why think George Floyd is pretty pretty obvious? Actually, it's not pretty obvious You don't want to go back into George flat. We talked. What I'm saying is the idea that there's two different Americas because of those because of those incidents is is very, very over the top. OK? Why? I think Slavery's over there on the name of the black national anthem. Does it. It implies that there are two different countries inside one J. D. Let me explain to you what I think is over the top. Okay? I think what happened to George Floyd was over the top. I think slavery was over the top. I think it's over the top when you have a black man in our justice system that commits the same crime as a white man being a black man gets twice the sentence. I think that is over the top. 7022575396 is the number to call. Let's go to Louis. Louis is next on the Vegas Take Louis. Hey, Yeah. Look. The NFL obviously hasn't seen the ratings and end a and MLB and that's OK if they choose to do what they're gonna do..

"Hundred fifty beds and then you have as I said the approval of the title thirty two National Guard state of California again to be very precise we're going to have the approval of the title thirty two National Guard activation and we're providing that all of this again like in New York at no cost to the governor meeting governor Newsom in the state no cost to the state it enables the government to provide robust National Guard support to the state so they can have control of of the National Guard federal government sending these are incredible people that are being sent we have a large federal medical stations with over two thousand beds then that's going to California and then strategic national stockpile order we've ordered like wise hundreds of thousands of different items will go into the exact numbers but the numbers are very substantial but we're having the tremendous additional number said and whatever the states can get they should be getting ice it was sort of a back up for the states and some of the states are doing really well and some don't do as well the ones that don't do as well need more help but these are three states it really do need help because they are they are hit very hard and the outpouring from the private sector's also been extraordinary I'm pleased to report that Honeywell great company has just announced it will immediately expand its personal protective equipment manufacturing operations in Rhode Island to produce millions of additional N. ninety five masks are very hard to get they're actually quite complex for the U. S. government's strategic national stockpile they'll be immediately then delivered to the various states this expansion is already under way and it's going to provide a lot of jobs for that state probably around five hundred the masks will be distributed by the government for the use of the health safety and emergency and this for response workers primarily for response workers these are very high and this expansion is in addition to Honeywell's action to more than double production of its existing personal protective equipment manufacturing plants that make a lot of different things and they're doubling and tripling their production they're going round the clock today I'm also announcing the launch of a new public private consortium organized by the White House the department of energy and IBM to unleash the power of American supercomputing resources to fight the Chinese virus the following leaders from private industries academia and government will be contributing and they could be contributing a lot of different things but computer primarily computing resources to help researchers discover new treatments and vaccines be working along with and I H. and all of the people that are working on this but tremendous help from IBM Amazon Google Microsoft M. I. G. ransomware polytechnic institute the department of energy's national labor laboratories the National Science Foundation and NASA they're all contributing to this effort and they're fully in gear this afternoon I also want to update you on the steps were taken to protect and serve our country's eighteen million veterans these are great people are amazing veterans have shown their eternal loyalty to our nation and this is a time where they're in need and we are going to show our loyalty to them would be very protective of our veterans we're working on certain hospitals where we may be doing some work a Louisiana in particular and some other states veterans hospitals could be very protective of our veterans some of them are out of that very vulnerable age and some of them obviously are not feeling well and some of them are still suffering the wounds of war for many years ago yesterday assigned vital legislation to ensure that the GI bill will cover a distance learning during this emergency I also spoke with many of our veterans service organizations or the VSO is to describe our unprecedented action in February the department of Veterans Affairs established nineteen emergency operations centers throughout the country one of the things that they've been trying to get done for many years you all know this from following me over the last number of years but we got it done pretty quickly they've been trying to get it done for many many decades was choice veterans choice and also veterans accountability now if it's if it's crowded within the set if they can't get to a doctor we have great doctors in the VA I have to say that we have fantastic doctors is good as they come but it's hard to get to him and because of the what was bureaucracy but no longer bureaucracy we've done a lot of things in that case because of accountability when people are doing their jobs or if they're bad or if they're sadistic or if they steal or anything bad happens were now allowed to fire them for a sign that a year and a half ago for many years you weren't able to do that so the VA is working and I was just told by a great later at the VA Robert Robert okay they said for the first time we got the highest marks in the history high highest poll numbers in the history of the veterans administration came out a week ago that they're happy and and look one of the reasons that happened highest in history one of the reasons that happens because of that insurance if they have to wait on line to go and see a private doctor we pay the bill and and they get better you don't have to wait two weeks and three weeks or two days but they get better and a lot of times they waited so long that they would they would have a problem it would end up being terminal because I couldn't get that intrigued by the desert they deserve so highest poll numbers highest approval numbers in the history of the VA I was just given that information yesterday we restricted visitors access to one hundred and thirty five veteran community living centers which has nearly eight thousand veterans with chronic medical conditions so that will limit their exposure to the virus we wanna totally take care of our veterans and then that's what we're doing the VA is canceled most elective medical and surgical procedures that delaying them feel after this is gone after we've won we began providing lifesaving care to patients who had symptoms across the one hundred and seventy one VA medical centers nationwide that's a big deal under my administration the VA has also been a leader in expanding telehealth telehealth is becoming a bigger and bigger factor in in medicine this month we have taken bold action to cut through the red tape and make telehealth available for millions more Americans during this crisis they can speak to a doctor from the safety of their home rather than risk becoming infected or making a tremendously long trip when frankly or speak to a great doctor right from your home it's happening telehealth we were very much at the forefront of that too very proud of it and it also takes a big burden off our system we continue to accelerate the development of safe and effective vaccines we're also aggressively investigating a number of anti viral therapies and treatments to determine their potential in reducing the severity and duration of the symptoms and you know how I feel because how I feel is on Tuesday they're going to be starting it on Tuesday morning and we're going to have some medications delivered that would see the work they certainly are affected in other ways and they they are safe from the standpoint is that they're not they're not killing people we're not gonna have that so a lot of great things have been happening in that regard I just want to finish and then we're going to ask a couple of people to say a few words that have been so much in the forefront of of this incredible job that we've all been given but I I wanna say that I know that this is a challenging time for all Americans we're in during a great national file and we will prove that we can meet the moment I want to assure the American people that we're doing everything we can each day to confront and ultimately defeat this horrible invisible enemy word war two cents were at war and we're fighting an invisible enemy think of that for those of you are feeling alone and isolated I want you to know that we are all joined together as one people eternally linked by our shared national spirit we love our country the spirit of courage and love and patriotism no American is alone as long as we are United and we are United were very United people are saying things now that three weeks ago they didn't talk that way we're very United no force is equal to the strength of a unit really a unified America United America in America like we have it right now for those worried and afraid please now as long as I am you president you can feel confident that you have a leader who will always fight for you and I will not stop until we win this will be a great victory this is going to be a victory and it's going to be a victory that in my opinion will happen much sooner than originally expected it's now attacking the enemy is attacking one hundred and forty four countries at this moment one hundred and forty four that's unthinkable it's never been anything like this and it's vicious it is vicious some people recover well and some people have a hard time we all know that but we will be totally victorious we will then get our economy up to a level that it was and I in my opinion beyond because that will be a pent up demand there is a pent up demand and a lot of a lot of great things will happen but I'm very proud of our country I'm very proud of very proud to be president and just something that's just you're very special people so thank you very much and I'm going to ask if I might combination of people are you start off with this thank you Mr president but just a little bit about what we're doing in Washington California and New York we understand the state's Washington New York and California there is seeing a steady increase in quota nineteen virus cases nor to assist with additional needs identified as there is the state of New York was approved for major disaster declarations morning while Washington state was also approved earlier today California submitted a request.

So I just find it to be amazing, especially considering that the Democrats in particular have produced nothing to deal with the border crisis, especially the border crisis. I mean, we can go down a laundry list, but it truly is right now where we're seeing one of the bigger crisis. "This piece off on billion Mike wanted them to do a sports center piece about their relationship about how he taught certain people in this town how to be sports fans because to me were you startled where any of you startled. I know it's been a septic tank down here in sports for a long time. But we're any of you startled by the fact that the Marlins have had ten managers and no playoff appearances since Wade arrive the dolphins have had nine coaches including Nick Sabin, and no playoff wins. The the hurricanes. Haven't won even the cruddy ACC one time since Wade start it and the Panthers haven't won a playoff series either. ACC clemson's won two national titles. Florida state's one won three national titles. Cruddy ACC. This guy mental punch in the face. Yeah. The Panthers just hired their sixteenth coach in twenty five years. No, no stability. Now. The coastal though, where you buy where you guys surprised by that at all that the losing has been that much around this winter also they did win the ACC in basketball. I I was aware of that. And it's one of the many reasons why Dwayne Wade is special. Why he's so beloved because the franchise is the only winning team in town over a sustained period of time. It's pretty remarkable when their average when they're five hundred and fighting for the spotlight this season. It's monumental disappointment. Only because we expect so much. It is a monumental disappointment. The most expensive team in the sport missing the playoffs. And this twain way thing gives us a little bit of feel good. But he's right about the raised standard though. Mike because yeah playoff. I'm we're old enough to remember when Steve Smith and the heat making it to the hawks in the playoffs. It's something that mattered around here. Icke smith. Yeah. Oh, what a terrible nickname. That was a physical series to think there was a brawl. John CONCACAF was in the middle of it yet grand long by line. Grant Long was one of the scary. Miami Heat blessed with intimidating powered Fords. I mean PJ Brown Grant Long you UD hundred we handle this. You d thing too is I know tonight's all about Dwayne. But this is a little awkward coming back next season. Just because he wades gotten all this attention. He's like, I I get one of these. Well, you d hasn't said he's retiring, right? No on the contrary sort of leaking out. Although he did that thing on media day where he likes it on a hoop, and we all just assumed it was a retirement thing. He didn't say it's word, those explains Wapping jerseys with tonight is it going to be do you d I would self. The younger version of himself. They're going to have like a hologram. A hologram tonight. A cool moment will be if you checks into the game. I mean, I don't know how doing how air expulsion approaches this because they technically have to get it. So I don't know if he's like I'm gonna play you down as twenty five minutes, that'd be a little odd considering they need to technically. So when you guys sitting here doing pistons math are we doing pistons math because Orlando in Brooklyn now in your only hope is that in Charlotte beat us Detroit in Detroit the other day, your only hope is that the Troy loses the rest of it's games. Right. Yeah. Pistons a their form is as poor as Miami. Lately. They've lost four in a row. However, they're playing Memphis in the Knicks. So it's brutal man for all the indictments of this year's heat team. And Wade has been one of the few positives of one of the greatest you could file it when they needed the games the most they played their most losing basketball season. There haven't been a lot of losing streaks like this then needed all the games, and they lost all of them. Yeah. They did four in a row at the worst possible time, but they have put up a fight though. I thought that loss. In Toronto was a tremendous performance by Miami. It was a great performance. I mean Toronto's very good, and they caught up tough break with the inbounds Aaron whatever was happening with the referee also their comeback in Boston..

"You think are ever be a chance to him to come coaching Alabama when Dave retires or the as successor Clinton spent too too much, and he's I thought I told the story. So I'll tell it quickly. I I was with taboo at the Alabama sports hall of fame. Banquet back in April. I was sitting next to him. I was hosting it. And it was it overwhelmed him to be inducted into that body. And that night I walked out of there thinking, maybe maybe he would consider coming back. And you know, what he did to screw it up. He won again. And I and I just don't know now with two national championships. I if he can walk away from where he is, and he loves his alma mater as as most people do, but but I mean to say he is set for life at Clemson would be the understatement. Yeah. I agree agree lake. But the by the way, Raymond would you want to replace or succeed the greatest coach of all time. Probably not. Oh, one more thing worse later that I had heard legend had a while. He. Call it about a week ago. He did. So he had. I mean, you you we'll tell you talk about this maybe one time, but you know, think about the the responsibility and the challenge of of replacing Nick Sabin I covered bear Bryant successor. And even though he came in with credentials, and even though he was a good football coach he could not deal with the external and internal pressures of replacing at the time the greatest coach of all time. And you look at any any field when you replace someone who has been so dominant it it's hard and for Daboh there's virtually nothing to prove unless he decided he wanted to live in Alabama, which I just don't think he does. I mean, considering as a genuine hero in Clemson, South Carolina. We're up against a break. "Be forever tied in this era of college football and Don months in on the Clemson radio network with the final call of the college football season second national title in three years for the Tigers. And as Daboh referenced the only perfect playoff champion. So they're the first one to run the table and go fifteen to know also this to me stands out just because it kind of defies logic. So we'll call this any illogical nerd alert. No top seed so far in the college football playoff standings has won a title. So Dow five years in the number one team in this case, Alabama has not actually won the championship. So you know, what that says about the rankings? Actually, I don't know. "Pay the Amir of Afghanistan to keep order and the emirs did. And we won't ask too many questions as long as he doesn't bother the British. Okay. Well, Aaron O'Connell does this intrigued by Churchill saying that that this third courses as as we're talking about he he called it undignified. But he said is the only alternative a true workable art, alternate for for western power in Afghanistan. Is there a two thousand nineteen version of this? Yes, maybe. You know, the old saying history doesn't repeat itself. But sometimes it rhymes, obviously, we can look back to the experience of previous armies and Afghanistan, and there are some rhyming couplets that are worth paying attention to. But the military force of the United States ability to put missile thousands of miles away without a single troop on the ground is radically different from what Churchill was experiencing in the in the North West Frontier province of Pakistan. So I think the important point for this whole conversation is to go back to what are the United States is enduring interests in the region, and we do have some and they're effectively twofold, first of all there are transnational terrorist groups in Afghanistan and in Pakistan now, some of those have transnational reach some of those are planning and conducting attacks trying to get outside of that region and to attack other western interests, including our country that is an interest for the United States. We we have to restrict terrorist organizations to what are unusable safe havens. We don't have to wipe them out everywhere in the world, and maybe keeping them at the. Top of the Hindu Kush is a pretty good place to contain them. But we can't ignore them. That's a terrible idea and cutting and running is affectively strategy to just ignore them to say, whatever who cares is what we did after the nine hundred ninety s and that did not work out. Well force the second national interest. We have is to prevent Taliban takeover. Now, it's not likely by any means at this point. But completely cutting off all aid to the Afghan government willy nilly care. What what comes is probably not a good idea. And it's not one that I suggest if the government collapses completely or has zero control over the country. Then there will be far more productive safe havens for transnational terrorist groups, those are our interests, and we can target resources towards those interests, the two choices are not pay forever or run away. We need to have a bias for nuance. When we talk about this. And I think that there is a way to restrict funding to target funding and to put conditions on funding. How diplomacy works? It can work successfully. And let's be clear that the nonmilitary aid to Afghanistan to just double down on on on. What professor Barfield said, the non-military economic assistance has created an entire generation in the cities that are affectively functional middle class, and that this is the way where government responsibility steps up because the middle class demands, it it is the way out of out of violence, and I don't think we should cut all that aid and assistance just because I it seems hard to do. Well, you know, what since you mentioned, the Taliban. I want to just play a little bit of a sound here from retired general Stanley mcchrystal the former top US commander in Afghanistan. I he was very critical of the president. When President Trump announced that he wants to withdraw half of US troops from Afghanistan. This was mcchrystal on ABC's this week last Sunday. He basically traded away the biggest leverage point we have. If you tell the Taliban that we are absolutely leaving on date certain cutting down weakening. Ourselves there incentives to try to cut a deal dropped dramatically. That's retired general Stanley mcchrystal Thomas Barfield, let me just turn back to you. Here. We've got a minute to go before the break just to underscore again. Negotiations have been underway between Taliban leaders and the US or through the us special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, but just on Sunday, the Taliban said they wouldn't attend plan talks this month because they want to change the venue there. But, but what's your response to it mcchrystal said mcchrystal's, right? But it's was under President Obama. That surge went in with absolute dates that we're going to get out..

"His second national championship game last year at this time. He wasn't the starter this year, he is and he will tell you. He has come a long way in that leadership role. Even just in the last few weeks leading up to the game against Oklahoma. And the Orange Bowl that I've really found my voice as a leader with. Thin this offense, and he is continuing to receive treatment on that surgically repaired left ankle. It started at seventy I'm this morning and will continue through the evening and every day up until that national championship game. That is straight talk wireless, nationwide coverage and America's largest and most dependable four G L, T networks and the NFL Adam Schefter reporting. There is a growing sense that ain't Tonio Brown. Trade is a real possibility. Keep this date in mind, March eighteenth is that's five days after the new league year begins which is when the receivers do a two and a half million dollar roster bonus from the Steelers would it make sense for them the deal AB. Mike Golic junior on Golic and wingo. You've still heard in that process. Mike Tomlin saying there was a clear lack of communication this Sunday. You still her Ben Rothlisberger saying I tried to get in touch with a being he wasn't getting back to me. And you heard Cam Hayward. They're defensive end come out on a radio and intimate as well. But this is a locker room the disappointed. So if you take all of that if you just take. What they're telling us at face value. They're still enough of a problem here that needs to be addressed. But like you just hinted at it's going to get addressed because at this point financially. I don't know if there's a way that any team could get rid of them. But especially not the Steelers in the way that they do business. So should they trade him field Yates, ESPN NFL insider on Spain and fits the ultimate reality? If you're trading Antonio Brown as you can talk yourself into it. If you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, and you might not have to sell it that hard yourself, Sarah. It might just be, hey, you know, something like the guy has become a real pain in the rear. He's been subversive. He has been divisive. It's time for us to move on. We can replace the Antonio Brown's production enough because we are the Steelers nobody drafts receivers better than we do. We'll ks made up his mind for this reason a player that doesn't show up is a cardinal sin. It no matter how you work out the mathematics. No matter how you work out the plus minus charter liked we like to do here on the Wilkin showed the teach chart. No matter what you. You put on the other side of my receptions touchdowns. No matter how many game changing feel tilting route. So he can run no matter what if on the other side of the ledger is may not show up for a potential playoff affecting game win this and get the right loss and the ravens and you make the plus if you've got a guy who doesn't show up for that. That is a cardinal sin. It you cannot forgive it makes at t- chart. No matter what's on the other side net out to a negative. I don't want Antonio Brown on my team. You can't have a player like that.
