A Student's Education Should Not Be Trapped by Their Zip Code
"You should not be trapped by your zip code into the education system that you're going to get. And I know that's and actually, you know where that's grown as you well know is growing the most and for the podcast listener. The area where that thought is growing the most is in your poor inner city schools. And actually, it is shown to work. And for those of you who out there who just believe, oh, we just need to throw more money at education. I just give you the city of Atlanta, which has the highest, one of the highest, if not the highest per student spend rate in the state of Georgia, but some of the lowest test scores and before you tell me it's about demographics and other things, you have private charter schools that are running simultaneously within two miles of the same school, the same demographic of kids the same issues, but yet are producing graduates that go on to flagship universities where it's just down the road. The difference is I think the motivation and the teachers and how they interact with these students. So it's not all just about the money, which is what the teachers unions want to share with this
Victor Davis Hanson Analyzes Vladimir Putin's Escalating Nuclear Talk
"Sir what do you make of his escalating nuclear rhetoric You think it's a bluff I mean again a lot of folks miscalculated with a lot of experience dealing with the region who thought as I said before he would just stick with the eastern region of Ukraine and not go any further That clearly was not the case Given a black swan event like a nuclear attack it's not the type of thing we can just cast off and disregard Your take on why he's escalating the nuclear rhetoric Oh I think he realizes that in every incursion invasion the key to whether you win or lose or borders and we lost in Vietnam because of the Ho Chi Minh trail in the Southeast Asia supply depots We had a tough time We don't really last map down us down because of the Pakistan border in Iraq Syria and Iran Anytime you have that fluidity and you can be resupplied you're not going to win And he's looking at the statistics it's in many thousands now of javelins and sams that have been sent in there and you look at that picture of that convoy and in theory those jobs that new improve can hit something that over two miles and the guy could be in the forest beyond the flanking infantry guards of that convoy and take out a lot of vehicles if they have that many of them So he's thinking well I've got to get this over with and when and these people we've got four NATO countries that are that are going to stop me And so I'm going to threaten a nuclear strike on the west but when you look people have remarked about the look of these generals when he said that I don't know if that's indicative of a thing but I think yeah I don't
Pastor Leon Fontaine on Why Faith Leaders Can't 'Sit This One Out'
"Who's a pastor in Canada, we're talking about the situation with the truckers who have converged and continue to converge on Ottawa, their nation's capital to protest the vaccine mandates, Leon, we're seeing very similar dynamics in the United States. Most mega church pastures, most pastors in the United States somehow, they have the deeply mistaken fatally mistaken impression that they can sit this one out that they can kind of not take sides or that they can side with the government and go along with the language, the nonsense, the idea that this is about safety. This is about, we know that it's not. We have to say that it's not. But it sounds to me like you have a similar dynamic in Canada where a handful of pastors like you are discerning what is happening and you're sticking your neck out as you are by coming on this program and talking about it on your own program. Yeah. For every mile of truth, there's two miles a ditch. So, you know, we've got pastures that are really on a side. I probably wouldn't go because we've got a democracy. There's lots of ways for us to have our voice be heard. And what's interesting also is that this seems to have spawned convoys all over the world. We're getting calls from a country of the world that are doing convoys towards their capital. And people are just contacting us from around the world saying you've given us such hope. And mainstream media for us seems to have been saying everybody's for this. Everybody's for this. And so everyone is just kind of just oh really, I guess they're sharing stats that it's like man past 90%. You know, this is what everybody wants. And that's how lying that's going. We might as well go back to the Soviet Union under Stalin. I mean, they have the power to lie. They have the power to control the media. It really

Area Libraries, Bookstores Celebrate Banned Book Week
"There is a piece in the wall street journal by the president of regna. Repoed publishing full disclosure. They are the publishers of many of my books and all of my books in the rational bible series and i have appreciated their worked tremendously. Tom spence is. The president is piece in the wall. Street journal is about banned books. So tom first of all of course. Welcome to the show. Thanks dennis happy to be here. I'll bet are and i'm happy that you are. What is there. Every year is that there's a banned books week or something. What is it called. Yes it banned books week. It's a week long promotion in the book. Trade that sponsored by the american library association the american booksellers association and several other organizations. It's the last week of september so begins. It begins next week. And it's a way to promote books that have been ostensibly banned. The the joke of it is that the books that are promoted year after year have not been banned in any meaningful sense and now the books that are in some real sense. Being banned are studiously ignored by ban. Books week policy in the book but hypocrisies two-mile a term. It's orwellian the books that are banned are not mentioned during banned books weeks and books that our peripheral band give me an example of what they say is banned so so yeah i mean obviously it depends on how you define your terms so if i if i describe a book if i tell you that a book has been banned. What does that mean to you. What's your first thought that it is no longer available to the public right. I think that's a reasonable definition. So if i'm living in soviet union in the you know nineteen eighty five. And i want to buy the gulag archipelago. Am i gonna find it kid. It's been banned right the government or somebody with authority to the power to do. It has made that book unavailable.
How To Create a Stronger Mindset to Tackle Goals
"I definitely get into mindset itself and talking about stoicism the type of resilient thinking where the obstacle is the way instead of wishing for life without obstacles instead of wishing for short cut around the obstacles cherishing obstacle in knowing that is how we find our strength. That is how we get stronger. That's how we get better just like going to the gym. This is the jim for your brain. It's called alice. Static load in the body and the more resilient we are. The bigger are stress bucket. Were alice static. Load can be the more stress we can handle and the more stress we can handle mentally the more stress we can handle physically like pathogens and viruses and things like that and vice versa when we get better at physical stress doing cold plunges and hot saunas and doing fasting we get better at dealing with mental stress. So your body sees both The same those are alice static. Load another thing. That i would say there's really important is. If you're big. Goals are overwhelming. Start making small goals start raking them down into much simpler things start tracking things. Journaling things using an app. If you want using google key or evernote or something like that in just tracking things and tracking your small wins with your small goals. That's really important at the big old just seemed too big and break it down. Start making it simple. If your goal is for example to lose fifty. Which i don't think is a good good goal. I think a good goal is to fit into a certain dress or you know. Feel great about your body. Or whatever like i think a shift like. That's more important than getting caught up in a number but to i think breaking it down into smaller things you know like what's the dress size you want to get into for you know x weeks like those kinds of things like and or lifting a certain amount of weight by x. weeks You know being able to walk two miles by x. Weeks you start getting like your goals broken down to where instead of like one massive goal you have twenty smaller. Owl's and then. How good does that feel when he start checking off all these goals like wow. I can walk two miles. I'm in a smaller address. I'm you know able to skip mcdonald able to you know. Skip the diet soda. And have a joe pacheco. I don't know you know something like that. those are all meany wins but big wins that add
The Port Chicago Disaster
"One is quite sure exactly what happened but at ten eighteen pm there was a loud crash. The seminars reported as sounding like metal and timber falling down. This probably a crane or one of the booms which had collapsed then. There was the sound of an explosion and then a fire about five. To seven seconds later there was a massive explosion that destroyed the entire facility. It was one of the largest explosions in history up until that point pilots in the air at the time saw a fireball three miles into the air. The blast was felt in boulder city nevada. Four hundred thirty miles away. There was damaged onto buildings in san francisco forty eight miles away debris landed over two miles away and the plane which witnessed it said it's all white hot debris shooting past it. At an altitude of seven thousand feet. It coastguard fireboat near the pier was thrown six hundred feet or one hundred and eighty meters away where it eventually landed in the water and sank. There were three hundred and twenty men and the peer when the explosion occurred all of them died instantly. Two thirds of the dead. Were african american enlisted men who were working on the dock. In fact this explosion by itself was responsible for fifteen percent of all of the african american deaths in the second world war. I've got a previous episode on the halifax harbour explosion during world war one. The portugual explosion wasn't quite as large. But it wasn't too far away the biggest difference and the reason why the fatalities were lower. Portugal is that there were no civilians on the base. There were two hundred and fifty other injuries and of the men who were killed only fifty one wherever identified an inquiry was launched only four days after the explosion and the ruling was that it was probably the fault of one of the enlisted men. Nothing was mentioned about the poor safety conditions and the lack of training

Wet Notes 8-30-21
"This is wet notes here on scuba shack radio for monday august thirtieth two thousand and twenty one. Well we have certainly had our fill of extreme weather lately just last week here. In connecticut we face the challenges of tropical storm on re just barely below hurricane strength and at the last minute it shifted east and we avoided the brunt of the wind rhode island wasn't as fortunate and now we have item a cat for hurricane hit louisiana. Extreme weather is now the norm. The news keeps getting worse. Recently there was a study published by nicholas bars from the potsdam institute for climate impact research and that was that the gulfstream could be varying towards irreversible collapse. Now the gulf stream is part of the atlantic meridional overturning circulation or a. m. Oc this circulation takes warm salty. Water from the tropics moves in north and then takes the cold water south. The study finds that the circulation is at its weakest in one thousand years. So what happens if the gulfstream collapses that will dictate extreme cold for parts of north america and europe. Is the collapse imminent well. That's not an easy question. Answer it could be decades away but as we have seen things are happening a lot faster when it comes to climate change not only will the disruption of the gulfstream resort in colder north american temperatures. It is predicted that there will be a rise in sea level disruption of the monsoon patterns and impacts on the amazon rainforest. An aunt arctic ice sheets. The study concluded that is that this is all a result of human endorse induced climate. Change in may of this year. I talked about a project out on lake. Tahoe called cleanup lake. That project had an ambitious goal of cleaning over seventy two miles of the mountain lake. So i thought i would give it a quick update on how the work is progressing. Now these numbers come from the cleanup delake website. Cleanup delete dot org as earlier this month. Team of divers has removed an amazing eight thousand. One hundred and twenty two pounds of trash were three hundred and three thousand six hundred eighty four kilograms and covered about twenty two miles or thirty four kilometers of coastline. There update indicated that they have completed seventy four dives over twenty seven days of diving. The diver's consumed two hundred and eighty six cylinders of air. Today there have been eighty one volunteers who have delivered two thousand six hundred and eleven volunteer hours. Now i'm not sure if they're on pace to meet their objectives but that's not always the measure success. The amount of continuing effort is what really counts. Keep up the good work guys. The annual boston sea rovers clinic for this year is just one month away. The two thousand twenty clinic happened just a couple of weeks. Before the corona corona virus lockdowns took effect. We really didn't know how serious things were then. Now as we continue to emerge from the pandemic the show may just have the distinction of being the last face to face. Scuba show in the world before the pandemic and the first face-to-face scuba show in the world post pandemic monty. And i were at the last meeting. And everything's proceeding for the october. First and second show the show will follow state and local mandates and as the days pass by. We are all hoping that the show will go off his plan. This year shows moved from the traditional march date to october as a result of the pandemic that you'd be a great time to enjoy some early fall weather in new england. It'd be great to get together and diving is certainly a social sport. Do you miss dive training magazine. I sure do. I think i've re reread all the back issues. We have a good shop at least three times. So what's happening with the publication. Well i reached out to catherine castle garcia the editor to find out the latest catherine informed me that they hope to be publishing again in the fourth quarter of two thousand and twenty one. Now that's some good news. The fourth quarter is not that far away. And i'm certainly looking forward to dive training magazine hitting the streets and finally here on wet notes. I wanted to give you an update on the situation with dutch springs. If you remember last time. I reported that the property owned by stu jill school had been sold to trammell crow texas developer. Who's planning to build a large warehouse facility on the property. The initial word was that dutch would shut down after the season while a lot has happened in the last couple of weeks i there was a petition that garnered over three thousand supporters to keep the place open and as we know petitions can only go so far then there was support from patty professional association of diving instructors patty due to white paper outlining the economic benefits dutch brings provides as a diving venue. Patty estimates that because dutch exists. It helps to generate three point. Four billion annual retail sales in the northeast they tag the economic benefit to bethlehem at thirty four point five million as for tax revenue. The paper indicates that about ninety. Eight point nine million is generated for state and local taxes and northeast and about two point one million for bethlehem in addition to patty support. The lehigh valley planning commission has called the proposal of disaster for the quality of life in the lehigh valley while it seems that there a great deal of opposition to maybe very little that can be done to stop the effort. One positive. I that i did see. Was that trammell. Crow was indiscretions with local officials to offload the fifty off lou to fifty acre quarry for community use. Just how would you get to acquire if they build the warehouses. I don't know while the saga is far from over. I would expect that we won't see. Dutch brings open for the twenty twenty two dive season but his al michaels once said. Do you believe in miracles. Well that's it for this edition of wet notes. Here on scuba shot radio for august thirtieth two thousand and twenty one
U.S. Conducts Drone Strike in Kabul
"Breaking news. Of course out of afghanistan president biden making good on his promise to retaliate for isis k. Attacks on us military and civilians near the kabul airport last week rap. Sanchez is in doha. Cutter raffled can you tell us tom. A little after five pm local time as the sun was starting to set over kabul. The us military says it carried out a drone strike against an isis cave vehicle heading for the airport. The drone tracks the white cars drove through this residential neighborhood just west to the airport and the strike happened around two miles from the perimeter. Us central command says the vehicle was packed with explosives and posed imminent threat. When it was hit those bombs went off and cause significant secondary explosions. You can see this happened right next to houses and there are reports that an afghan child was killed in the blast. The us military says it's looking into that but has no indications at this time of civilian casualties. No us personnel were injured. And this doesn't appear to have had any impact on the evacuation effort. President biden did warn last night that an attack was highly likely but just because this flawed appears have been thwarted doesn't mean the danger to. Us troops is over. The white house has said all along that the most dangerous hours of this operation would be the final hours ahead of tuesday's deadline for

How to Do Remote Work Well With Kara Luton
"Thanks for being here. Thank you so much so carry. You are a career transition or who was pursuing dancing. Tell us how you got into development. Yes so i had done ballet my entire life. When i was three and i kind of started taking it more seriously. When i was in high school. And doing that and when it was coming time for me to think about college. That's kind of what i was like. Kay do wanna keep pursuing ballet. Do i to do something different. So i'm moving back home to nashville. And i studied public relations and after graduating i got a job in the music industry. Doing pr in. I done that for a few years as getting really burnt out. I went to the iron yard. Which was the boot camp. It was twelve weeks long. And i was studying front end engineering so it was a lot of it. We're learning h. Two miles css melodramas script and then my cohort studied view in number as our frameworks so it was a lot of in the morning class. And what was that boot camp experience like tons of people who are maybe considering it thinking about it. What was your experience like there. I mean it's like a fire hose of information conflict. You i feel like once. I kind of got the grasp of wine concept. We were like. Here's a new one. Gotta learn this and i mean it was twelve weeks long. "Know, in a metal two miles up in the air, traveling hundreds of miles an hour like it's a pretty incredible set of circumstances, But people forget it because we've gotten so used to it. But the second, that plane goes bump the second that there's turbulence. All eyes are on the flight attendants. Is this normal? Is this okay? Are we gonna be okay? Like you can read it on their faces and it's hard duty and you see it in in falling. You see the flight attendants put on that face. And because that is our duty to calm and reassure and let people know this is fine. This is fine. We're going to be fine. Even if in the back of your mind you're going. This is this is a lot. There is a lot going on like in the book, You know they they're facing a pretty extreme circumstances. But that's not what they present to the passenger when they walk around the galley curtain, and they're in the privacy of the galley. They're going to be a little bit more, You know, casual and off the cuff, but with the public it is. We're fine warrant were under control. Um, there was a story in Buzzfeed that, uh, had a bunch of, uh what would you call them? Revelations comments by people who are flight attendants. Kind of telling you what What really goes on. Some of them are pretty interesting. One of them was, you know. During delays at the gate. We're not getting paid were as ticked off as you are, if not more true fact Flight attendants are paid hourly and we are only paid when the door is shut and the aircraft is moving. Wow. Yeah. So boarding and to planing all of that. We are not getting paid. Another one. This is trivial, but it might not be trivial to you when you're getting your trash together. Don't stick your napkin in your cup. We have limited trash room. So we stack the cups whenever you do that, and I have to fish out the napkin. Die a little inside. I love that, And that's such a flight attendant thing to say, and she's absolutely right. Like flight attendant. Every flight attendant has their personal way that they prefer to do trash trash collection, and that's hers. It's so funny to see what the little quirks are that each flight attendant half like my hot button issue, like hers is with the napkin in the cup. Minus when people asked for an entire can like, you know, they say all take a coke. But could I get the can Because in my mind, I'm always like Do you think I'm catered to give every single person on this flight full can and the guy next to you also just ask for Coke. So what? Now? I got to hand him just a poultry cup and you get the entire can It's that's my hot button issue, like her napkin in the in the Cup, which may not seem interesting to the general public, but but that's what flight attendants sort of shake their fists on. Right. So you're so you're thinking Are you kidding? And what you're saying is, of course, sir. Exactly. That's where that that's where that face comes out again, of like, of course, would be my pleasure. Another one said. When you.
