A highlight from The Impact of Safety on Economic Activity

"Here's the taxpayers, just like, well, as long as I can have my little bat blue, and I can go watch the bills. Well, wait till you start getting price out of that. Don't don't get involved. I'm amazed at the amount of people that bitch about things but actually do nothing to get involved to help right. Alrighty, welcome back. Mike Lomas, Ron Rheinstein in studio with us today. Well, hopefully, as always, we'll just pop around and go over. We're actually going to talk a little bit of economics too, but the place where money meets politics. And if you need us throughout the week, folks, 833 -FIN -GUYS. Ron, where do you want to start? You put together a bunch of stuff here. We can talk about the economy, GDP numbers. According to the Democrats, everything is hunky -dory. It's great. Sunshine and roses. Sunshine and roses. Although there's still snow on the ground. I know. There is snow on the ground. That was a little bit depressing. My kids were happy. Like, oh my god, it's so pretty. Yeah, when we were driving back from Wilson with Halloween for our kids, excuse me, you just start to see that I'm like, yeah, that's not rain. And then I think by the time I took the dog out for the last time, I was like a little bit after 10, I'm like, yeah, that's... Well, you're right on the border with me. Yeah, where you get pounded. Yeah, usually it's funny because usually the officer, we get very little. None. Well, I would say none, but not much. No, not even close to the soutouts. Not like what we get. Yeah, but I think everybody got a little bit of dusting. Yeah, no, I mean, as you look at the economy and where, you know, they're all high -fiving, popping bottles of champagne and, you know, the U .S. GDP, according to their figures, rose by 4 .9 percent. The, you know, also exceeding expectations of 4 .5. But yet, if you look around, folks just, not even just in western New York, but just overall, where savings are in decline, inflation has not slowed, contrary to what these maniacs are going to claim. Disposable personal income, again, according to their data, contracted by 1 percent, which isn't good. Yeah, yeah. And the biggest driver of this GDP growth has been government spending. Well, government spending, and I think we forget about the rebound of COVID. Yeah, I mean, we literally destroyed the economy. All kinds of businesses and some of these business owners that you and I work with on a daily basis are still trying to struggle to get back, which means they're, you know, some of these business owners that got into, hey, I worked 60, 70 hours, I got my restaurant to where I thought it needed to be, I could take a little time back, you know, maybe I'm back to 40 hours a week or spending some time with family. They are now back to 70, 80 hours a week, struggling to try to make up for the extra loans they had to take out to survive and that means more risk, more, so when I see, oh boy, the economy is like, well, yeah, a huge part of that, a huge part of that is these business owners trying to rebuild from COVID. And you even, driving around, this is Monday night, I was, I got home a little bit later, the amount of restaurants, like, because I don't know, like, I went a different route than I normally did when on my way home, but there's a lot of places still closed. Oh yeah, for sure. It's not a seven -day work week. No. With restaurants, other businesses. Well, we measure success here in Erie County by if something opens. We don't actually look at the overall picture and say, okay, are we growing? Like, let's compare it to, I don't know, Florida. Yeah. Where there are very few vacant properties. They can't build fast enough. No, they can't build fast enough. That's exactly right. And interstates are expanding because I know you guys are on the east coast and for, god, I can't believe I'm saying this now, but like for over 30 years, my family's been on the west coast. And when you take 70, or when we took 75 back 30 years ago, it was a two -lane interstate in each direction. Now, every time we go down there again, because we have family friends that are down there, I have, you know, relatives that are in Sanibel, so you still take 75 when you fly to Tampa, they keep adding lanes. They keep growing the interstate. Why is that? Yeah, well, millions of people relocating for freedom, by the way, for freedom. For freedom. So many clients are like, you know, I don't really like the heat in the summer, but boy, I do like the fact that the, you know, the feeling of, hey, if another COVID was to hit, if the Chinese decided to stir up another flu, I don't feel like I'm going to lose my business. I don't feel like I'm going to lose my freedom. Yeah, I don't need to show my jab card to exist in society. Yeah, no, and by the way, another young girl died the other day. I got 33.

Capstone Conversation: Jared Asch Asks CCTA's Tim Haile About Transportation Taxes

"Let's talk about transportation taxes, right? Cause you talked about we're moving to a zero emission vehicle. So nobody's buying gas, maybe 2035. It'll definitely start reducing as no car in California will be allowed to be sold. That takes gas anymore. 2045, 2050, you're cycling out entire fleets, people that do have gas vehicles by that point. So it's going to seriously impact your funding. We've seen funding needed for BART, funding needed for transit agencies. We've talked about bridge toll increases, MTC, putting a regional ballot measure on for transit. And then CCTA has potentially a ballot measure coming up in the next 10 years. Just talk about a little bit of funding ballot measures, what people should know, inform us. Well, there's a lot of things happening right now. Uh, that's a tough question, but I think I'll, I'll put it this way. I think people are really fatigued on taxes and in transportation revenues. And I, and we all as transportation professional, we all recognize that. And I think, and I think the first thing we need to do in my, this is my opinion is we need to understand better where all the existing funding is going. Right. I think we need to hold ourselves accountable in terms of where this funding is going. And I was giving a presentation to a group a couple of weeks ago, and we were talking about this in terms of before you put another ballot on the measure, where, how are you going to show me that, that this is going to make an improvement? And I think that really comes down to being obviously transparent, but also having good data and being able to share that data. And I think that's something that we all have that data, but I think it's a matter of using that data to be able to demonstrate that the work that we've been doing for the last, especially with measure J we have been doing good work with measure J in fact, Contra Costa transportation authority, we were actually given an award for good governance by the Contra Costa County Taxpayers Association. And so I think something to know about CCTA is that we're only 20 people. We are a high performing agency. We operate this agency as Jared is almost like a private consulting firm. Like we hold ourselves accountable every single day. And I think that's what people are looking for. They're looking for government to be more efficient, more accountable. And, and I think once people understand that, that there's good governance, I think that's what's going to take to really help people understand that, okay, my money is going to good places. Yeah, maybe I can, you know, vote yes on another measure. But to your point, there is a lot of moving parts right now in terms of a regional housing measure in 2024, regional transportation measure in 2026, which quite frankly is there to address the transit fiscal cliff that's coming. And I think a lot of people, the general public, I don't, a lot of people don't even understand that there is a transit fiscal cliff that's coming. But I think, and that transit fiscal cliff is important because transit is important for everyone and especially for those that really need to use it. Like, like for example, the yellow line, the BART line that comes from San Francisco all the way to Antioch, it's the highest productive line in the Bay Area. Like people use BART in Contra Costa County. And so if BART, like right now, BART has a tremendous fiscal cliff and that's because their revenues are down, their fare box is down. Right now, I think they're right around 45 % pre -pandemic revenue levels, whereas before they were depending on 70, 75 % fare box return, that 30 % of revenue is gone. It's missing, right? And luckily the federal government stepped in and was able to provide, I'll call it gap funding. Just recently, the state jumped in and tried to provide some gap funding out to for the next four years. But this is really about transit doing two things in my opinion. One is getting creative and figuring out how to become more efficient and more, quite frankly, in some ways more accountable. And then two, what is that money going to do to improve the transportation system and what's the value proposition? Why should I take transit, right? What's the value proposition? I think that's what people are looking for is they're looking for the why of why are we doing this? And so I think that's a big part of the regional measure in 26. I will say locally here in Contra Costa County, we, the board of CCTA, which is comprised of about 14 elected officials, will be discussing and looking at potentially when we will be renewing Measure J because it does sunset in 2034. We may go out for a measure in 2028, 2032. I don't know. We have to have that discussion to be able to continue those revenues. And those revenues are important because without Measure J, everyone's commute in Measure J would be anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes longer in Contra Costa County without Measure J, which is significant, right? That's significant. And I don't think people realize that there's an agency like CTA with this local revenue source that is your transportation agency. We are focused on this every single day, trying to bring benefit to Contra Costans. And we're leveraging every local sales tax dollar that we can possibly can to provide the most benefit. And like I said, without that local dollar, everyone's commute. Can you imagine if we never built the Fort Board of the Caldecott Tunnel? What's 24? I'd be sitting there from last Friday. Yeah. Could you imagine if we never widened Highway 4 from two lanes to from two lanes to six lanes? Like it would be a mess still, right? It would still be considered the most dangerous highway in the country. And Measure J has brought in these really important improvements into Contra Costa County. And we've done it very well and very efficiently.

A highlight from Finding Healing and Community to Enrich Your Sexual Experience and Identity with Erika Alsborn

"Welcome back to season two of Energetically You, where we talk all things healthy habits, abundant mindset and optimal wellness. I'm your host, Meghan Swann, a mindset and wellness coach. I love helping women optimize their wellness through plant based nutrition, movement, mindfulness and mindset practices, that having them feel more aligned with who they truly are and confident in their own skin. I'm the creator of the Sustainable Integrated Wellness approach. I am also living in Mexico and I have been for the last 12 years. At 30, I sold everything and went on my own eat, pray, love journey, if you will. And now at 42, I'm still on my first stop, loving life and feeling more empowered than ever before. This podcast is for incredible humans who are interested in feeling more aligned with who they truly are, confident in their own skin and able to make more empowered decisions for themselves going forward in the future. So let's dive in. So excited for this interview. So excited. In fact, I'm up at five in the morning. This is the only time that Erika, who is in Sweden, could meet. But I am so excited. She is a new friend. We'll get into it in our interview. But Erika is an international sex and birth coach from Sweden. For the past decade, she has immersed herself in exploring the body, mind and sexuality from many different angles and approaches. The academic, the medical, the spiritual and the holistic. Her own sexual healing journey inspired her career shift from nursing to becoming a sex coach and entrepreneur. In 2019, she gave birth to her first child, and through that experience, realized how transformative childbirth is and can be, and is now dedicated to shifting the current narrative around birth, helping women to have positive, empowered and ecstatic birth experiences. So, so excited to dive into all of that. Welcome, Erika. I am so excited to have you here today and to get to know you better, really from a selfish point of view. I've followed your work for six plus months. I love everything that you are putting out into the world and sharing. And I just registered for your shameless course, Mastermind. I don't know what's the best defining. And, you know, it was it was a bit of a leap for me. Really excited. And I want to get to know, like your whole journey to where you are today. And I know that a bigger part of it is is the birthing coach. So let's dive into both parts. First of all, how are you? Welcome. Hi, Megan. Yes, I'm happy that you found me, obviously, super delighted that you have joined this amazing program of mine. And and yeah, I'm so happy to be on this podcast and share about this near and dear topic of mine, which has kind of surprisingly, which kind of surprisingly, you know, went from being my biggest obstacle in my life and then turned into the greatest teacher, which, well, I guess it's not that surprising. As you do. Right. Take us back. You were you were a nurse and, you know, that's a really powerful, amazing career in itself. And like, was there sort of like one defining moment that you can point to where you thought I'm going to be a sex coach, not a nurse anymore, or was it much slower and kind of like a part time thing that you secretly did on the side and then eventually made it into your main passion? There are kind of two lanes or two parallel sort of journeys that then crossed and combined and became the one. And so one journey is if we go way back to when I was a kid, I was masturbating from a pretty young age, as one does. When before, you know that it's called masturbation. And before someone tells you that it's inappropriate or you don't do it outside of the house or whatever. Exactly. Or you realize that not everyone else is touching their genitals all the time and like, what's wrong with you? OK, they don't do it. So probably something's wrong with me. I better stop. Right. Yeah. So as a kid, in that kind of innocent, shameless way, exploring my body and, you know, the delights of my body and all of that, and then growing a little bit older and like before puberty filled with, for lack of a better word, like horniness as a preteen, like everything's so exciting and you're starting to feel attracted to people. And it's like you're getting all lit up when you see people kissing on TV and like, you know, excited when there are any sex scenes and all that juicy stuff. And then little by little, what instead started to happen inside of me was I was coming up against all of the negative messages. And mind you, I grew up in Sweden. I'm Swedish. I grew up in Sweden. So the messages are pretty mild in comparison to other countries, other societies, especially, you know, religious stuff for anti sex, religious stuff and dogma and all of that. But still, there were so many conflicting messages and I'm quite the sensitive person. And, you know, pair that with a with low self -esteem and lack of parental guidance and positive, like sex positive, authoritative figures, adult figures, role models. I started to, again, like feel like, OK, well, this is not safe and this is not normal and something's wrong with me. And boys are predators and I'm the I'm the prey and they're going to take something from me and slut shaming. And and then combined with some negative sexual experience at my sexual debut, it all just sort of went into like. yeah, Shit, like and so which I didn't realize, and then I performed sex for a long time, I was having sex, I was enjoying it. But mostly performing and faking orgasms because I just thought, you know, like that's the way one does it. Or at least that's what at least that's sort of the cards I've been dealt. And so suck it up like that's it. And then I became a nurse, obviously, there's a whatever desire, personality trait, something inside of me that want to help other people and find enjoyment in that. And I went down that route, but pretty quickly I realized that it wasn't really my thing. During my nursing degree, I had been sort of trying to get into the sexuality realm. I wrote my thesis on sexuality and there was an interest, but it was kind of the the it was as a nurse, you're limited. You cannot really work a lot with sexuality, at least not in a kind of positive, proactive guiding way. Then it's more like, here's a person with STD, take a blood sample. And I was like, that's super boring. I don't want to do nothing spiritual about that. No, nothing creative, nothing spiritual, nothing engaging. So I stumbled upon a sexuality, a sexology master's degree at the university here where I live in Sweden. And luckily, my nursing degree made me eligible to to apply and be accepted. So I started doing this sexuality. Academic sexuality training, and I quickly realized that this is pretty boring. Like, when are we going to talk about sex? Because we were there, you know, in class talking about all of the systemic and structure, structural things and and like beating around the bush. And I was constantly feeling like, when are we going to talk about sex? And how to have better sex and help someone have better sex and have their first orgasm or have all of the orgasms. And, you know, really much more with that kind of I had that focus. That was it became really clear to me that that was my interest, because that had truly been the journey and it was the journey that I was on. So simultaneously, as I kind of did that shift and started exploring and studying sexuality, I'd also found an online teacher. Who Tantra taught and holistic sexuality, and I was going through a massive personal and sexual healing and transformation journey, and it was really that that that made me realize that. Well, if if if I can understand that something is not innately wrong with me and that there are certain experiences and belief systems and. Habits and behaviors that have accumulated and contributed to me feeling like I can't access my orgasmic capacity and I can't really enjoy sex. And there are actually solutions to that, then surely there are thousands, millions of women out there who feel the same. And I don't want this to be a secret because I don't want them to feel as broken as I did. And so that kind of started accelerating me in that direction and propelled me forward towards. Thinking of sexuality as not just a personal journey, but also perhaps a professional career, and it was that experience that also made me feel like the psychology masters is great, intellectually elevating, thought provoking, great. But it's not giving me the tools to solve the problems that I have and that I want to help other women solve, so I enrolled in an online. Super comprehensive, extensive sex, love and relationship coaching program, and it was my jam, like juicy, practical, holistic, spiritual, academic, modern, like all of the things combined with a real focus on coaching, identifying issues and solving them through. Well, working holistically with sexuality and very practically, so. Yeah, it's been eight years since I first enrolled in that online course where I realized that I get to heal and thrive, and so it's been a very fascinating journey. And long story short, I've gone from pre -orgasmic, really sexually dissatisfied to multi -orgasmic and having the best sex of my life. And I keep saying that, oh, my God, that was the best orgasm of my life. Oh, my God, that was just the best sex of my life. And it just keeps getting better, which is something that you normally don't hear women say as they age and become mothers and wives and all of the things. Yeah, oh, my goodness. So so many follow up questions, but sorry. No, no, that's good. I, I feel like your your journey really points to the reality in many realms. Like mine was more specifically around going in moments of my life, trying to go the academic route of psychology and the same thing. Like I think it's important to have that background and that basis. But, you know, you can speak to this as well as a coach, you know, it's just so much more tactical and tangible, the coaching scenario more often than not, than going sort of like the traditional structure within the medical model route of solving things. And yeah, so that just makes me even more excited. I'll tell you, like random, random things that sold me on the course, like it really is you. I mean, I'm very excited about all of the modules. And they're like, honestly, there's a few modules that kind of scare me, but I thought, like, that's a good thing. But it was one, I'm in love with how you say body, how you pronounce body. Every time you say it, I'm just like, oh, my God, I love her. And you're not the first one to say that. Probably the only thing that stuck after living in Australia for two and a half years. That's what it is. Because it's like, it's like out of character of the rest of your accent. Anyway, it's awesome. So that and, you know, I very seriously considered, I'm like, you know, what about what maybe it would be so much more valuable to work one on one with you. But then as we got going through this, the process of you like sharing and giving so much value and then the sort of like mini the what was so intoxicating was the dynamic of working with other women in this this realm. And because I think, I don't know, this is this is my perception, but I'm guessing it's common where it seems kind of weird and intimidating. You know, like the first thing I did was six months ago, I did like a breast massage workshop and I'm like, oh, OK, so we're really going to sit on Zoom together and like be breast, you know, like bare breasted and massage. That that was a step for me. And at the same time, there was just something like really, really powerful that I would never have imagined about doing something like that, like a healing practice where you've been taught to have so much shame around even just having your breasts hanging out and do and like giving the whole group permission at the same time. I don't know if that resonates. Absolutely. I think it's so beautiful how you describe your journey with that and the that the confronting experience of like, what am I going to do this with other people? Isn't this something that we always only do behind closed doors and always pretend that we also don't never like never do it? We don't do it at all, because that's what like being modest and civilized mean. And here it's like the contrary, inviting you into a space like the workshop or in my course where you're going to be literally masturbating to my voice live with your sound and video off, because we don't do that, knowing that there are 8, 10, 15, 20 women doing the same spread out all across the world. Like, that's not your so powerful it seems like in one box, it's like, oh, my God, that's so fucking crazy. And then another box, it's like it's so powerful and epic. And yeah, anyway, I'm excited. The and what happens is just like you said, you know, after when you when you're in that experience and once you just meet that confronting, like, this is weird, what the fuck? And then you get over it and like, OK, this is this is what we're doing here. And then all of a sudden what happens is, is that you feel like this is the most normal thing ever. This is the most healing thing ever. I can't believe I've never done this before, or I can't believe it actually feels so natural. And natural is not a word that I normally like to use because what is natural, but the loaded word, it is a very loaded word. But it it actually feels after after a while of doing it. And I've even done this in person, in person retreats with 50 women naked on the floor, some with sarongs on top of their genitals, some butt naked, masturbating with fingers and tools inside of themselves and doing like really amazing, tantric sexual practices in person. Everyone having their solo experience. But in community and you're like. This is so normal, I'm hearing a woman having an orgasm to my right, I'm having hearing a woman crying to my left because you're going through a healing experience and I am plucking on, you know, I'm somewhere having my experience and you're like, wow, the it gives you a taste and a little insight into maybe what community used to be. Where sex wasn't so abnormal, taboo, charged, controlled, demonized, all of those things hidden in secrecy behind closed doors, but where actually sensual and communal pleasure could potentially have been a thing. And so we're bringing that back. And when we do that, we realize that it's a very joyful experience to share with other people. It builds deep bonds and it makes us feel really happy and normal, right? Normal in our desires, right? So let's talk a little bit because I think it's a common experience and I know that you had a huge shift as well. Like for me, childbirth was one of the most powerful experiences, and I won't go down the rabbit hole of like it also was very far from perfect experience. But the fact that I blew my own mind about what I was capable of doing and did it all naturally, I had absolutely no in the face being surrounded by a culture and individuals who also didn't really see that as normal or that possible. You know, it's like completely changed my vision of what was possible for me in general. So I think that there's that like the transformational point piece of giving birth. And then also another huge topic is how, I mean, as much shame and judgment we tend to have about our sexuality can be in general as young women. There's like another layer that comes with, oh, well, now you're a mother and that somehow means like that you don't have sex anymore or you're certainly not. Oh, like there's like yet another layer of hiding or being openly sexual. And I briefly told you off the top here, for me, it's like such this weird mind fuck in a sense here in Mexico where there are like women that are, it's very normal to dress super sexy even as a mom and not like, quote unquote, slutty. And we can deconstruct that works. I know it's one of your favorites, too. But, you know, in a much more overtly trying, trying to be attractive, that's completely socially acceptable. But and I'm sure there's spaces and maybe I'm not privileged to them as a foreigner where there are more open discussions. But I haven't been privileged to them in 12 years where women here are talking about like maybe with very close girlfriends.

". Grab the good weather all the age and what it breaks, Carlos Ramirez is with us this morning in the WTO V traffic center. Indeed, I am, thank you so much, dean, a very good morning to you. We'll start off on the outer loop of the belt, way I don't have eyes on this incident, but we were hearing several reports over the scanners that there's a crash on the outer loop of the beltway, just as you make way past saint Barnabas road. So keep an eye out for that one, as you make your way. Now, if you add it on 66, as I previously mentioned, there's several incidents you got to keep an eye out for if you're headed eastbound on 66 soon after two 34 sudley road and just after the manassas rest area, you should find two lanes on the left hand side completely blocked off. In addition to that, it looks like they are calling it a traffic shift in place. Do proceed with caution, follow the direction in the area. Sounds like there are several signs out there telling you where you could go. It sounds like the eastbound express lanes are shut down. Again, follow direction through the area, it is for the accident scene involving a motorcycle crash there. They're still investigating, still got two lanes blocked on the left hand side after the rest area. And if you're continuing eastbound after the fairfax county Parkway, you've got a vehicle fire. It was a crash and obviously, after the crash, one of the vehicles caught on fire two lanes on the right hand side completely blocked off, state of the far left hand side to get by. Eastbound, northbound side of 29, headed through centerville, the northbound eastbound lanes are completely shut down right now, but it looks like they may be dealing with a flagging operation where they'll stop traffic in one direction to let the other side go by. Go ahead and follow their direction to get by. If you're headed on the southbound I 95, the accident scene was blocking a right lane, looks like they were able to confine everything over to the right shoulder. No delays because of it. This is southbound 95 after the fairfax county Parkway on your approach towards the lorton road exit interleukin, a single right lane gets you by the work zone between route 7 all the way up towards the American legion bridge northbound GW Parkway two lanes that get you by northbound headed towards the beltway be careful the ramps to the inner and outer loop of the beltway aren't super obvious for you to take. Thanks dean if you're headed northbound on I 95, they are dealing with a work zone just as you make away past Marilyn one 98. It looks like two lanes, at least two lanes are blocked currently for the work crew. Follow any police direction through the area, BW Parkway looks great in either direction right now. No issues en route 50 from the beltway out towards the bay bridge bay bridge traffic. Looking good so far, three lanes bringing you westbound and two lanes will take you back on the eastbound side. Not seeing any real delays at this time. If you are headed along two ten branch avenue, three O one, things seem to be relatively quiet. They are still dealing with an accident scene in southbound side of branch avenue right by surratt's road looks like two right lanes are blocked there, minimal delays, but a few delays nonetheless, once again, that southbound branch avenue, as you make away past surratt's road, but when he police direction through there, inbound side of the suitland Parkway looks great, looks like just as you make your way past naylor wrote, it is a little slow, but nothing to write home to mom about. "Second lane on Saturday is going to make things better. But we don't want people to get lulled into a false sense of security. And Sunday we hit and we're down to a single lane. That could make things really rough. If people are not prepared if people are not planning to do other things four or 5 99 remain the primary alternates during this closure. Now there is a chance that this work could be postponed. If the weather gets wet. We heard Nick Allard earlier this hour. Say we might get a couple of Sprinkles towards the end of the week. Maybe not enough to Postponed this, but we will definitely keep you up to date and now to the new lines that are going to appear. Where are those? All right? We got one here in the Seattle area and then one a little bit further South. I'm going to start with the new North W H O V lane between DuPont and New Lakewood that has now opened. That's all part of this JBL M project there. So that gives HIV drivers another 4.5 miles of lane to use the South found HIV lane. And that same stretch of road is supposed to open in August Now is found. I 90 drivers have a new auxiliary lane between East Gate and Lake Not remember. They've been working on that for the last year or so, maybe two years. This is a nearly two miles Being built on the right shoulder that basically connects the two ramps there between East Gate and you know what's like Samantha's Parkway. It provides a lot more room to merge between the exits, which should cut down on the congestion. The westbound Auxiliary lane is still under construction, and it should open in the fall. But we've got a little bit more pavement to use. In any little bit helps. Yeah, I wonder what that project was that has been going on for a long time. So Yeah. Is the bike lane part of that too? Well, though they like what you saw in Factorial certainly there because they built that ramp, so you don't interact with the cars there on the trail getting off at Factorial. So that's all kind of part of this whole thing, But what they did is they built up the shoulder for the freeway. So, no, I mean no bikes on the freeway. But they, uh they did connect part of the trail there at least through Factorial. OK? And last month you were talking about this The good to go. Website outage..

"Hey their passion. I'm so glad to be able to have an opportunity to be back with you. I have been waiting for the opportunity to be back with you and so despite the craziness of the circumstances that we are all in right now the fact that it has given opportunity for me to be back with you in this way feels like a gift. I'm excited about god's word to continue what it is that he's already been doing in your heart and in my heart and life. So why don't we pray and go to god's word together lord we thank you for this privilege that we have to know that you were speaking to us and that no matter where in the world we are right now we can hear your voice. So lord i pray that you would take this one little simple message and you were divided however many multiple thousands of different ways you need to so that every single person under the sound of my voice no matter what culture or or continent they may be on no matter what country lord i pray that every single one of us right now will know we have been in the presence of god in the mighty name of jesus i pray amen amen well for about ten years or so. My family and i lived in a fairly rural part of the dallas fort worth area. We planned it that way when our children were little. I've got giants now. My oldest is eighteen like six foot three inch tall than i've got a sixteen year old. He's about six foot two inches tall. And then i've got a twelve year old but he stands the exact same height as me. So i am being outgrown very quickly in my household and when they were younger we spent ten years living about ten minutes away from the city so we can get there quickly but we felt like we were worlds away. We would drive back to our home that was on a lazy little two lane road and we enjoyed it back there because you know there were things that three sons need in their lives like bugs and mud and trees and stuff like that

Facebooks Australian News Blackout

"We're gonna stop me on the side of the world We've news or rather the lack of news on facebook in australia uses. There can no longer cheryl read news articles from australian or international publishers in a row over proposed legislation from the australian government. Alex hold my hand here. What is going on in two thousand eighteen. The australian government regulator lotion inquiry into impact. Face what we're having on competition particularly around advertising and they found that there was imbalance of power between tech firms and the media and they recommended a code of conduct. That was very long complicated. But essentially it meant that they were gonna get share advertising revenue. Or there's going to be some sort of deal struck between those platforms. Giggle went okay and started making deals news. Koa is probably the biggest one and facebook is just pulled all of the australian new sites off its platform as a sort of nuclear option and basically said well. We've done what you asked. What do you want to do now. And it's almost felt like an empty threat when threatened to do it last year. Now it's real ever all they really did mean and that's a surprise you know. Isn't it clearly just abandoning the best. I think the most interesting thing. It's the perfect storm with australia. Because there are big enough country that that it's significant around the world. Everyone's watching to see what comes out of this. But the people in the world understands what precisely and but they're still not in the top twenty countries a facebook users so business of apps article said that australia's population twenty four male. So even if everybody in australia was facebook using adult they would still only reached nineteenth place of most popular facebook countries regardless of the politics. Heavy steve it just isn't good. Pr for facebook is it. And then i must have made the decision that it doesn't matter that is bad. Pr but i mean for one thing but extensively refusing to pay nominal tax you know despite being one of the world's biggest companies and for another thing when the middle of pandemic and that turning off news to an aging demographic who using service. You might want to know where they vaccines are at. I think when the period of time where the hall of this kind of disinformation machinery during the presidential election the criticism of getting rather just pull out completely out of australia doesn't send a good message to uses. All united see news. App is trying to get factually promptly check journalists and now it just smacks The valley it signed by. Maybe perhaps google is by by playing ball a little bit more with the content providers. I think in this convenient this information east of you want facebook to be really kind of suppose could quality journalism given alex is essentially while we're different to google search engines because publishes willingly upload their content to us and so they volunteering the information to us and why should we pay them to provide them with the platform. But it's not really true. I mean don't you have to basically have your content on facebook. I three years ago. You definitely did. i think. Now it's a case of across all publishers. Most of publishers facebook traffic will come from users sharing their stories to their own pages so they won't come from the brand themselves and so the bruns choices to publish that story. But it's not to publish on facebook necessarily. It's the question of whether or not then. Publishers have benefited by having face because platform so so particularly in all the users all the users go to facebook and then they click through for news rather than going to a new site for news which is something that the entire news industry is desperately trying to change. Probably new york times to the front of that bbc and the daily mail been leading on that for a while so the question is should facebook pay when people prefer platform to a news homepage. And that's difficult. All depends on whether or not publishers need. Facebook more than facebook. Needs publishes and i do not know the answer to that question also opposed goes to the heart of the origins of the open web. Doesn't it steve. Because the whole point of the way that the world wide web was built walls you can always linked to something for free. You can refer someone to something for free. That's not the same as publishing. That's how wikipedia works that's how other sites that are the facts about this work. Some applies in the state. Okay off the bolted. But i think we'll be interested to find out if that kind of sliding mole Content makers these big platforms whether that does really benefit that does is it going to increase the goss. Subscriptions by being late to secure gle by having that league that click from facebook. Is it going gonna financially benefit the middle lousy probably fund that journalism but also like who's getting the money and that's the other thing isn't it. Do we say in the case of google. You're saying google play pool. I mean that's true. That was a threat. Basically from being wasn't disable we'll pay in that kind of seemed to them a little bit. But do you say great. Journalism is being properly funded by google. Because they're going to give some money to news corp every time you click the link or do you say oh sorry open web. It was nice while it lasted but actually turns out we promote it was going to get the money anyway. The idea of the open wipe is tricky in anyway because as increasingly more sites are finding out a subscription model is is a way to have more stable income rather than appetizing income. Once it got a discussion there is no right. Answer that both valid but when it comes to how you fund journalism which journalism you decide is worthy of funding is stuff that is well read worthy of funding or is it only meaningful investigations. Take six months and nobody reads. Is that the sort of stuff. You should be funding. And who draws the line and where is that line drawn about what is worthy journalism. And what is just stuff that you found out that you're writing about and both valid like says it takes sports. Journalism is that valid journalism. And should that be funded. Is that less or more worth than a quick story about somebody who's been defrauded. It's a difficult thing about whether you make that judgment. The same as every publications editor is the story. Worthy should be a newsweek story. Is a bbc stories at wherever story. How do you workout. How you fund those things if you're a third party platform but also another reason that it seems that google have stumped up now as an an onion australia but the presumption is this might roll out elsewhere as well obviously is that they're launching. Google news showcase which is a new product isn't it. I think you need to google news app to see in the uk. So i haven't have you and also as a publisher as an editor. Does he really did these. Things really actually make any different. I mean how many links referrals do you get from sites like that and apple news really. I'm going to speak very vaguely about the level of traffic. That person's gusty. I think is the price of talking to say. I would puglia shame. The news traffic is significant across globally. So that it's it's not an insignificant patriot figures when you talk about the level of loyalty brings the branding. That's more difficult question. And there are no clear answers on that but take facebook facebook as you start. It's news initiative so announced the already launched in the us but announces launching in the uk. The next few weeks of that that plans to pay news publishers to be partnered with facebook so that that type of model is beginning already and we know that. Facebook and google provide huge amounts of traffic to publishers across the world. The ones where there're affiliate content and have been around for a while so we know so flipboard poker apple news. Are they actually significant. There's a user. They don't seem to me to be at yes that Flipboard is still flipboard user. Bases shrunk over the recent years because of google's controversial push towards its an platforms above flip boat but they are still all big traffic drivers. And if you're looking full patriots all of those are valid and can drive millions of patriot. Each month i think so once you get into the real multinational website so much sites. It's less of a percentage for this sites that that could be a huge jump in traffic. That could be thirty. Forty percent and on the smaller sites steve. A you mentioned misinformation an arguably. Actually if you've got kind of legit sources adding revenue for placement on sites like google. It away you can be sure about the quality of the journalism but at the same time you end up with a which is why the web existed you end up with that. A two lane highway. Don't you wear the smaller players and never given the prominence of the big players and it's actually harder to combat. Political narrative will propaganda that way than it would be otherwise it yet. I i suppose that's why you need to look a look at these other platforms. That are kind of imagine like capacity people having the different compensations. What you might get some full sensitive information beth. I wonder if that to access journalism days is always going to exist in some full and the people he won't say will find it but that he wants incentivized Look beyond really manny while they were

Reproductive Justice & Women in the COVID Economy

"Monica. Thank you for being with us today. Thank you so much for having me really is honored to be on the show with you today and to being conversation about reproductive justice. So i tell us what brought you to doing reproductive. Justice work and tell us a little bit abou- calling in reproductive justice in some people call her reproductive freedom. What brings me to reproductive justice. You know To answer that question. I have to take myself back to my hometown of wingate north carolina which is in rural north carolina. Honor one of those small one. Stop light kind of towns off a two lane highway and growing up in the rural south is. It's beautiful in so many ways that also opened my eyes to a lot at a very young age growing up in my community. I went to a school where there was only abstinence only education so we were desperately trying to find ways to have conversations about our bodies and to to talk about the feelings in the urges that we were getting as we were growing into adolescence and there was no space to do that until we had to find those things on our own and to create community with each other in huddle up in spaces to try to get this information in that to me. Just didn't seem right but we were doing the best that we could in. You know the church black church was episode for me my community. It's where i learned how to organize. I learned the had a voice. I mean there's just so much to Organizing route that. I get to the black church right because it was just an important piece in my journey however it was also a space where you know. We couldn't talk about bodies. It was just not the conversation that people were trying to have but almost every young girl that was in my church in so many that were in my community outreach. That went to school with. They were having children before graduating high school. And i'm like it's obvious that we're doing it. It's obvious that you know he's a conversation that we need to have and we just weren't having them and you know i i left wingate. I went to an h. b. c. You and came out while i was in school and it was like another part of my journey of understanding my body consent intimacy all different things that come along with growing into a young adult and i still felt. There wasn't a lot of space to have these conversations and I was desperately seeking those spaces and just trying to put the pieces together for myself. And so i think it's the experiences on. Unfortunately i also dealt with sexual assault in my adolescence as well as these experiences just all came together. And i didn't know what the term was yet but i knew that these issues were important to me in. I wanted to find answers and solutions to help me into also help those folks in our community that cared about. And so when. I put that beside you know reproductive justice movement that was started by black women in nineteen ninety four. The world starts collide. Right so yeah wasserman. Twelve black women actually came together. Some of which are very active in the work today. Like loretta ross. And dr tony bond able may will thomas here in georgia. These black women came together to create a framework that was more expansive in when thinking about our reproductive lives in this country and they brought together social justice in reproductive health and rights to talk about the intersection of her lives of black women and to have an organizing frame that allowed us to really talk about the myriad of issues. Right that we deal with lear making our decisions about our reproductive lives and so this framework was developed in nineteen ninety four battles women in now it is led by women of color all across country. Today right where we are all fighting for the human rights to have the children that we want in the ways that we want to prevent pregnancies without shame and with dignity to be able to parent our children in healthy and safe environments rights. We we we can already see the intersections of our work in terms of you know making sure i were not being plagued by you know. Environmental issues are making our water. Unclean or police brutality and we think about the rising rates of maternal mortality in this country and ultimately nova's work is really about our human rights bodley autonomy to make our own decisions about our bodies therefore our lives and so that's what reproductive justice is. It's the work it's not political home. It's where i feel whole and complete and those experiences again of growing up. Is that country. Girl and unique county is what really brought me to this work. And i didn't know that there was a movement waiting for me but it was.

What to do with all those disposable masks? Turn them into roads, researchers say.

"On of the many adverse effects of the pandemic on the environment has been the sheer amount of waste generated. More people are using more items like disinfectant wipes anything where you might of fudged the lines on perceived hygiene in the name of sustainability before some people of now thrown in the towel on that and picked up a paper towel instead in there are a laundry list of items that are good for sanitation or preventing virus transmission but bad for the environment and high up on that list masks surgical masks and ninety five k. And ninety five's any kind that's meant to be used. Only once or a handful of times risking it as demands say there are six point eight billion disposable mask being used around the world each day so this is a big problem. Well at our. Mit tech and design university in melbourne are experimenting with using disposable face masks to create roads in a study published in the journal science of the total environment. They looked first at the possibility of incorporating the masks into road building materials and then into their engineering benefits. Quoting are mit university. Roads are made of four layers. Sub-grade base sa- base and asphalt on top all the layers must be both strong and flexible to withstand the pressures of heavy vehicles and prevent cracking processed building rubble known as recycled concrete aggregate or rca can potentially be used its own for these three base layers but the researchers found adding shredded face masks to rca enhances the material while simultaneously addressing environmental challenges onto fronts ppe disposal and construction waste construction renovation and demolition account for about half the waste produced annually worldwide and australia. About three point one five million tonnes of rca is to stockpiles each year rather than being reused. The study identified an optimal mixture. One percent shredded face masks to ninety nine percent. Rca that delivers on strength. While maintaining good cohesion between the two materials the michener performs well when tested for stress acid and water resistance as well as strength defamation and dynamic properties meeting all the relevant civil engineering specifications and quotes the researchers say that using their recycled road material for just one kilometer of a two lane. Road would use three million masks and therefore seven ninety three million tons of waste from going to the landfill now one thing they need to further research is how the process would change when they incorporate. Sterilizing used face masks. Because so far the experiments were conducted using unused still professor g lee. Who leads the are. If you're coming west on 50, you're good to Annapolis and gooey headed back toward the Beltway. "Informed, Calm, Drive luxury for less and find out what drives you. It's a 38 minutes. Traffic and weather on the eights. Now Jack Taylor is standing by in the traffic center. All right. In Maryland. Our work is already in place on fifties found out of the Bay Bridge. Been there for about an hour or so. And now a little bit of a delay to get up onto the span because you've only got one left lane Getting by. You'll see the red X is lit over the right lane. Three lanes maintained westbound will keep an eye on that. That could change. Anywhere within the next half hour. So after about nine, they may give you a second lane on the westbound span. But for now, one lane East, with the work in the right lane and three lanes coming back West found in the Bay Bridge. Still a delay at a German town running to 70 South bound. Riverdale Road

"Riverdale road is an eleven mile stretch of narrow highway between the denver suburbs of thornton and brighton. colorado like much of the denver area. The road is the very definition of wide open. Space greenfield's dusty farms bisected by two lane highway though farm houses dot the landscape every now and then. You likely won't see another living soul as you travel down the pavement. Even under a blue sky the road makes realize how very alone you are but at night riverdale road comes alive. It's known for being a place of shadows. Ghosts and demons rumors include to ghost cars at a spectral jogger who was killed in a collision. But it isn't these small spirits that gave riverdale road that title of the most haunted road in america. It's something far bigger and a bit more flammable. Sophie didn't know how long she'd been driving at some point during her cruise down riverdale road time had lost all sense of meaning. Her body was going through the motions of driving but her brain was quiet. She liked the isolation of at all. Sometimes imagining she was in a completely different world. There were no other cars in sight. Fields of weeds sprouted on the side of the highway. The sun dip down just below the horizon and the crooning of ella fitzgerald drown out the sound of her. Tires churning on the pavement. The route started to move from straight to curving. She's slowly let her attention come back to her driving not fully ready to let go of the beautiful emptiness in her mind. She held onto the steering wheel loosely and subject sunglasses onto the top of her head. It was nearing dusk. Sophie flicked on the headlights and her breath immediately caught. There was a victorian manor sitting in the middle of the street. Her mind struggled to make sense of what she was seeing but her foot slammed on the brake hard. The car halted hundred body jerk forward but the seat belt held her back some of the pulled up the parking brake with their heart pounding her chest. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply forcing her heart rate to slow down when she felt that she was under control. She opened her eyes again. Slowly soapy couldn't understand what she was seeing. The highway just stopped right at the house. A small porch. She knew she wasn't lost her. Gps said so. She was just heading to a friend's house just off the route but the old house looked like it had been standing there for at least one hundred years. It didn't make any sense. She knew she should probably stay in the car and find another route. Turning around would have been past. There wasn't enough space for her to go around the manor but the site was so strange some improbable that she couldn't help herself. She had to know if she was dreaming. Sophie got out of the car and approach the house. The white would of the door and window. Frames was split and fading cracks in the glass. Bread like spider webs. A small porch around the structure had several missing floorboards as she walked closer. Her brain told you to let alone to go back to the car but her body felt differently. She climbed up the steps. The house groaned as though it didn't want company but so knocked on the door anyway and waited for a response. She didn't expect one much he also didn't want scare anyone. She just wanted to peer inside eight only for a moment but nobody responded she gently push the door open. It moved to jar with a sigh. Is it the whole house was breathing. This made her more nervous as much as the space call to her. She didn't like how alive it felt. Houses didn't have souls. She shook off the thought she was making too much of things she should just go in so be placed her hand and the cracked white paint of the door that nudged it open the rest of the way based on the outsides condition she expected dust mold and maybe pieces of the seeming hanging by a thread but the inside was completely different
