Grand Moon Landing Plans: NASA Awards Lunar Lander Contracts to Blue Origin and SpaceX

"From wonder. I'm David Brown. And this is business. Wars daily on this Wednesday may sixth ever since John F. Kennedy ask Congress to fund a mission to the Moon in nineteen sixty one presidents have been captivated by the dream of conquering the cosmos. I've believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal before this decade is out of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. Why the Moon why Mars? Because it is humanity's destiny to strive to seek to find we will give NASA new focus and vision for future expiration. We will build new ships to carry man forward into the universe to gain a foothold on the moon and prepare for new journey to the world's beyond our own that of course was JFK followed by President. George H W Bush in nineteen eighty nine and his son. George W Bush in two thousand four. Both bushes attempted to chart new courses for America to return to the moon. But these initiatives failed other space exploration plans of struggled to is Congress. The American people grappled with conflicts over money and namely it became difficult for taxpayers to justify spending hundreds of billions of dollars in space instead of funding urgent needs here on Terra Firma as a result the last time in American set foot on the moon was was the Apollo Seventeen mission in nineteen seventy two now in twenty twenty. That conflict has risen once again. The White House wants to put the first woman and the next man on the moon by twenty twenty four. That's four years ahead of an earlier NASA plan. President trump ordered the speed up in two thousand seventeen to make the optimist moon landing program. Nasa needs a Lunar Lander a spaceship designed to ferry astronauts from Lunar Orbit to the Moon's surface and back again late last month NASA awarded three contracts to private companies to build just such a lander in total the space agency. Funded almost a billion dollars worth of design and development. One of those contracts went to a team led by Jeff bazars his company blue origin. That team was awarded the largest of the three contracts. Almost six hundred million dollars though. Use It to design a lander somewhat like the one used in the Apollo program. Elon Musk's spacex one. A one hundred thirty five million dollar contract to work on a gigantic reusable lander spacex his lander which reportedly can carry one. Hundred tons of cargo is based on. Its starship spacecraft. Eventually the starship is intended to transport people to Mars The New York Times reports. The third contract for two hundred fifty million dollars went to a team led by Huntsville Alabama Company dianetics. The three companies have ten months to develop their lunar landers new definition of a space race. Anyone at that point NASA will have a clear idea of which lender they'll choose one prominent company. They didn't make the cut. Boeing. Nasa didn't say why it declined to award Boeing contract according to the Guardian but in December test flight of its star liner spaceship failed. That test flight had no crew aboard but the star liner was built with the intention of transporting astronauts to the International Space Station sending astronauts to the moon by twenty twenty four. He is fraught with technical organizational and financial challenges. Perhaps the toughest one is the cost. Nasr's twenty twenty budget is more than twenty billion dollars in twenty twenty one. That budget will have to increase by three billion dollars to fund the Lunar Lander according to the Guardian NASA administrator. Jim Breitenstein Stein said the agency expects Congress to fund the Optimist Moon landing mission despite the economic toll the corona virus is taken on the American economy. It's

What is China's Belt and Road Initiative?

"Over the next couple of weeks nature is publishing a series of feature articles that focus on China's massive belt and road initiative. This project will connect the country to others around the world by building infrastructure, including high speed rail networks, airports and even whole cities to date one hundred twenty six countries from Africa, Asia Europe and South America have signed up to the project, which is designed to transform the global movement of goods and services. The features in nature are looking at the effect that the Belton road initiative is having on scientific research and different parts of the world. The first two of these features are written by science policy journalist s and Massoud who dropped by to tell us more. So the Belton road is six years old when he finishes it will be the largest infrastructure building project coming out of one nation since probably the Marshall plan in which the United States. It's mostly financed. The rebuilding of Europe. After the end of World War Two. It was a mix of grants and loans to European nations. This is mostly loans and some grants from China to the nations that go towards its west and leading up all the way to eastern Europe conservative estimates. Put the cost of the Belton road initiative at over a trillion dollars on the project, which was launched in twenty thirteen by China's president Xi Jinping is designed to connect China to countries around the world by an expensive network of land and sea routes. It's about building railway lines. It's about building motorways. It's about building airports, and it's about either building newports or Chinese companies taking over the management and the running of seaports the Belton wrote initiative or be R is is sometimes known aims to transform China's global trade networks and access to markets. But shortly after its launch it became clear that science was going to be a big part of the initiative as well. This aspect of the Belton road is overseen by the Chinese Academy of sciences president by Choon Lee who last year roads in the bulletin of the Chinese Academy of sciences that quotes science technology and innovation of the core. Driving force for the Biaro development. The Chinese Academy of sciences as invested over two hundred fifty million dollars into Belton road signs and technology projects opening centers of excellence in China and building research and training centers across the world. His also setting up the digital Belton road is data sharing platform for participating countries alongside all of this comes a big investment in the training of PHD students from Belton road countries. Just in Pakistan's to one country right now, the total numbers of scholarship holders masters and PHD scholars is about seven thousand a year. Now just a few weeks ago, the Chinese ambassador to Islam abide said that he wants to increase that number to twenty thousand and this is just like one country. So you're looking at quite large numbers of people who right now, very young going to go to China going can do that PHD's learn Mandarin when they come back. They will outnumber the English speaking community of scientists in PHD Holden and say China's really looking to the long term in terms of both building capacity, but also making a sort of very strong case for very China friendly. Scientists into the future. The majority of these students studying in applied sciences or engineering and being trained in areas, particularly important to their home countries. It seems like a win win China build his global research networks and the country's build relevant research capacity within the countries themselves and particularly at the level of the early career researcher. There is hardly any criticism of what's happening here. I think people are genuinely surprised, but in a good way that a superpower like China is suddenly interested in the training of scientists.

DNA samples sought at facility where woman in vegetative state gave birth

"Phoenix police involved any other involvement from law enforcement officials here everyone up to the governor's office has said that they're increasing safety measures. They're looking at whether this facility has violated other things in the past. So there's a lot of involvement and a lot of is on the facility now, I would imagine. In fact, I would think that perhaps other families with members family members in that may be considering transferring their loved ones out of there was one woman that said that she had been sleeping in her daughter's roam around the clock since the news broke it's unclear whether there's legal action unclear whether people have have done a mass transfer or anything like that. "Us. The campaign for Illinois Governor run by Jay Pritzker was one of the most robust operations of any statewide campaign in US history with spending expected to surpass two hundred fifty million dollars spending was led by the eventual winner, Mr. Pritzker, a democrat, and billionaire businessman who spent one hundred seventy one mil of his own money, he defeated incumbent Republican Bruce rounder divided out over eighteen months mister Pritzker spent roughly three hundred thirteen thousand each day of the campaign. Here's what the money bought from Natasha. Correct. Reporter at politico magazine, Natasha set this up he went out and said and done it will probably almost tie the most expensive governors rates of all time in the US. It it it is almost ready. I'm at two hundred and more than two hundred fifty million dollars total, but Pritzker what's unusual on his own. I Nancy his campaign. So he poured one hundred and seventy one million dollars of his own money into the campaign. So unbelievable it in. About a third of the way through your story. You mentioned that even Mr. Pritzker pointed out that a candidate who's best known for having gobs of cash is not exactly endearing to voter. So what did he do about that concern? Right. So he was very cognizant of this that, you know, people people will think that he's out of touch or they can you know, how can this guy relate to me? I'm struggling to pay my mortgage. So what he did was he out to meet as many people as possible, and that's one benefit of having a ton of money. Ton time fundraising you could go out on the road. And that we did. So he he made frequent trips outside of Cook County, Cook County is the most populous county in Illinois. And it's weapon Democrats win usually, but he went out and ventured into more downstate, Illinois, which is when you get really far south in Illinois. It's very read very pro-trump country have given up on Syria. He went into a lot of those areas. He tried to go go back into some of the smaller democratic factions there university town and and reconnected opened up offices got field. Staff up and running engaged county county chairs and committee men and try to really build up an infrastructure across the state and get his, you know, just become more personable and be in front of more crowd speak with Natasha correctly, national correspondent at politico. She's written a piece entitled the best campaign money can buy. It's about the race for governor. How about the personnel? He used to piece this altogether, especially some of the the messaging campaigns, right? The reopen up the piece talking about and I was blown away by the one debate for one hour and a thirty five people working on the rapid response and the messaging. Surrounding this one debate. And it's way 'cause I I I work for politico that I'm a product as of Chicago journalism I worked at a couple of newspapers in Chicago. And I just I'm looking around the room. I could see. One campaign on what night was far larger than any news room in the Chicago area. And and probably the mid west. It was it was a massive undertaking. I it was a machine I mean, it really was and it was very coordinated jer organized. They were on top of you know, every single tweet bear shutting out messaging. They're they're monitoring what other people are running. They even had really sophisticated digital operation that would do things like catcher moments of the debate. And immediately turn around and gifts that that would somehow underscore something that that Pritzker would say or try to say something negative about Browner the mazing. Is there evidence that the money was what one at for him or if he had spent the same amount as governor rounder might he have won anyway in this environment. Avid input that that that he's still could have one without studying the kind of money and without doing other things he has done fight another thing that the short talked about like what kind of physician did they want to be in. When he assumes this new office. How strong is the party? How strong is the party infrastructure who's controlling the party. It's a lot of what he did. Through all of this was set out his own infrastructure. Through the state make sure that Democrats are elected up and down the ballot. So when he goes in he has a theory strengthened position tasha Natasha correctly reporter at politico..

Providing off grid solutions to on grid world.

"Impact on the market because we can produce or we can generate electricity from utility scale solar plant cheaper than gas cheaper than coal cheaper than nuclear. And we can generate wind even cheaper than that when measured over the life cycle of those renewable energy sources, but the issue becomes win. We get the electric compared to when we need it, and there are lots of research companies out there. There that are doing tests all over the country about changing work practices, changing little things here and there, but over a large enough number of people or a large enough number of machines to reduce the need for storage by maximizing energy when it's plentiful and minimizing the need for it when it's not. So those that kind of research is happening right now, but what we have in the United States and what the standard grid is based on is we have baseload and we have peak load and baseload is pretty steady. That's what your nuclear power and hydroelectric plants are typically turn out and then you renewables your biomass, things like that. And peaker plants are being turned on, hit the peak load. Peaker plants in the US are typically natural gas. Some of the older one. Runoff, fuel oil, typically natural gas, and depending on what part of the country they're in. They can run on very cheap, fuel sources. They only ramp up, like I said before, when we have peak needs Mets. Typically, during summer afternoons, when air conditioning is being turned on, as people are coming home from work and winter mornings, where people are getting ready for work, and maybe the cranking furnaces up to warm the house up after it's been cool overnight. And you know, typically first thing in the morning as the coldest part of the day. Now we've talked about the fact that peaking plants that the last megawatt, our last kilowatt of energy that you produce his always the most expensive. So typically peaking plant per megawatt costs per megawatt hour cost in the United States are about fifty two dollars per megawatt hour compared. To an officiant, natural gas generation facility combined cycle type out facility which runs at about twenty five dollars per megawatt hour. Now, the thing about peaking plants is they always have to be ready to go or at least they have to be ready to go most times. So you spend a lot of money keeping them ready to go rather than actually generating electricity form. Here's a statistic out was able to found it, find a New York. New yorker spend over two hundred fifty million dollar each year dollars to maintain certain peaking plants that only run a few hours per year. How about that? Only a few hours per year of actual production in their spending two hundred fifty million dollars per year while you look at New York and you figure, okay. Well, the the return is going to be very, very swift. If those guys. Is start deploy some utility scale stored solutions off. Think about some of the stuff that Tesla's done in southern Australia and in California. Those are projects that New York probably put in pay themselves back very quickly, but it's not like that everywhere. New York with the cost of labor there in with a peaking plant, it's labor. That's your release spending. You've got to pay those operators year round, even though they may be working for a couple of hours of year. When I say only working. I mean they're only running the plan of couple of hours year generating, but so that you don't blow your grid up. You've got have those guys available to go and you know, in New York, you're not gonna have guys say, yeah, we're willing to come in and work for couple of hours year and you probably don't want those guys to do that because they're not gonna be qualified to their job. So that's pretty easy. One. The other. Interesting. Interesting thing about battery storage. That's to the grid is it has the ability to actually add to the base load and reduce the people of. So if you're

"Turkey lives says her for ms would be about two hundred fifty million dollars era funding step from five to six fifty is a huge gap especially after so many decades of neglect now the funding has increased slightly this year to thirteen million dollars i'm with with us for the establishment of these new centres of excellence which are going to be spaces of research and clinical care which is really exciting except that it is far too slow and far too little you know i i wanna be well on still young and uh i think we're going to need at least ten times that amount to develop our research field of the size we can actually have largescale study is an advocate the evidence that we find so i am unfortunately i don't think the at age is really serious about finding out um yeah what's causing us at the speed at which patients need at to save our lives so you've been forced to come up with demonstrations and protests of of your own dd is there you you you you document the millions missing in your film is there another one schedule yeah so we're going to be m a essentially were using the film as a tool to organize and so we bring it to communities and we are are forming m u louis train agree that piece of a support and comedians and in collaboration among patients and allies and caregivers you know we arguing you do everything that it takes to bring that awareness and put the pressure on the government the challenges that every time we go out and we and we try to protest uh we crash have been you know we exceed our metabolic limit says this this is at at at disease that affects your energy production and adam patients have a hard time metabolising glucose ivc it means that you know i have a limited ban with in which shows may energy and their patients he came out.

"And and so yes that had an impact but really i think the the main growth year has been our kind of laser focus into how we create an amazing experience for both on the passenger and and driver side again uh i like looking at what we've done with drivers we've had over two hundred fifty million dollars and tips drivers have have received i look at some of the things that we've done for passengers as scheduled rides to even the amp which is kind of our new beginning tools that that we've kind of rolled out to all the markets to the point where we again you talk about growth we're doing over a million writes a day catch and so we see in some pretty spectacular growth in the last year or so and i think in terms of would you at attribute that too kind of focusing on our our core competency gotcha and just for our listeners the amp is this physical kill shape thing that you out on your dashboard literally says lift on one side another side at says what high tatters bs as high taggart or rather the passenger is and it's a you know it's it's a pretty interesting getting tool the thing i like about it is if you're in a crowded intersection or an area of the city and you're looking for your vehicle not only do you have this nice little emitting device in the vehicle but on the passenger app you can see the same color that's getting flashed and that helps you kind of distant you wait between some of the vehicles that you may think are coming to pick you up right and so sorry the i've just it's it's been very helpful right and is that something that you worked on our is out of a separate team it was a separate team i actually was part of the the original group working on that before the economists initiative um but no we have.

"They make about two hundred fifty million dollars in profit every year and they give it to the city of la the city's general fund that's the bigspending bee's and that use that goes to feed the pension feast pretty much and then they jack up the electricity rates there but a lot of rate increases over the years everybody's always screamed why do you keep raising the rates when you are making towards you fifty million in profit of why are you giving it away to the city and maybe that's not legal and maybe and finally somebody stepped up in sued there've been lawsuits over this i mean it's it's a it's a tax effectively you're you're charging asked the ratepayers of la d w p to prop up the city's general fun that's the we're paying for water and power when not paying to give into the general fund like a general tax so you're talked with eric leonard now because a settlement has been reached and he's got all the details and there's quite a few details here eric how are you hey good afternoon so this this settlement that has been i don't know if i would call it leaked but a bit maybe has come out to us moses is uh something that will end three separate lawsuits that all is essentially made this same argument against the city of la that not only was it illegal for the department of water and power to transfer or to earn a prophet it on selling electricity because remember it to municipal utility they're supposed to do things at cost for the benefit of the taxpayers the not supposed to make profit are not only was that porter legal but also the act of transferring the money away was illegal and there were questions raised in these legal cases about the recent rate hikes that you guys i talked about extensively and whether or not the true motivation behind the rate increases was simply to preserve the prophet that was then turned over to the city of los angeles rather than a rate hike out of necessity truly driven by the increased costs of doing business as the dw p and the cases were progressing along in a couple of months ago is we were checking the court files to see if there were developments there were indications that there were mediations and settlement talks.
