"Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. Hello, everybody. Welcome to the MMQB Podcast. It is Wednesday, September 27, 2023. We are through the first three weeks of the season, headed into week four with the Lions and the Packers up in Lambeau Field starting it off on Thursday Night Football. I should be at that game covering it for SI, and it should be a good one. We'll get into that game a little bit later when we get to our top five games of the week. But Gilberto Manzano joining myself here, Matt Verdon. We have a lot to get into. This was a week that saw a team score 70 points. This was a week that saw the Bears continue to stink worse and worse by the hour. And this was a week that brought up a lot of consternation about the Jets and Zach Wilson and where this whole thing is headed. So we'll get into all that and more. But first, Gil, how are you doing? I'm doing well, Matt. But I got to say, you forgot to bring up also a week that we saw Taylor Swift in the suite of Arrowhead Stadium with Donna Kelsey. Come on, man. Yeah, I'm terrible at that kind of stuff because I'm so focused on football. But you're right. You're right. And the shame of that is I grew up a Chiefs fan, so I really should be on top of that. Let's start there. Do we think the relationship, is this something now that we think is real? Do we think this is like, you know, some people think it's a PR move. I'm more in the camp, but I actually think somehow this is real. I think Kelsey maybe drove the inside straight here with that friendship bracelet. He tried to get to her at Arrowhead. Do you agree or do you think it's PR? Yeah, well, first of all, sorry for making you talk about Taylor Swift. I know everybody's talking about everywhere, but I feel like I guess we have to, too. We have to. It's kind of a deal at this point, yeah. And you know what? I'm kind of with you. I think it is, you know, authentic, I guess. I won't say love, but dating here. But my conspiracy theory, Matt, here is I think they were dating before Travis Kelsey announced to the world he shot his shot after the concert. I think it was more like, hey, let's get some attention here. We are celebrities here. We need a bigger profile because, you know, Taylor Swift has, you know, worldwide attention. She needs more. So maybe that's where I'm losing myself in my conspiracy theory here. But, you know, if you're going to do a PR stunt for revealing, I guess, a new love life with another celebrity. That's the way to do it. Because the podcast for the Kelsey brothers, I'm sure it's blown up. I think it's number one on Apple podcast. So maybe number two is the middle week show here. I mean, could be. But there's a lot of tension over there. And it's interesting to see how it plays out and how people are very fascinated by this. And especially seeing all the TikToks of like, you know, all the wives upsetting the husbands saying, did you know about this Kelsey guy? You know, Travis and Taylor Swift really put him on the map and they all get upset. So it's been funny to see. It's funny because the Chiefs now have jumped from being this great football team that's won two Super Bowls in the last few years here to now they've become almost like Americana. Where when you turn on the television, you got Mahomes repping Subway. Mahomes is on State Farm. Andy Reid's on State Farm. On those Subway commercials is Chad Hennie, who Mahomes somehow cut into this deal. He's a retired quarterback who's now getting some play. Kelsey has DirecTV that he shares with Chris Jones. He's got Pfizer, which I'm sure in some corners of the world, heads exploded everywhere with that. OK, you've got Kelsey doing Bud Light commercials. He's on Lowe's commercials. And now he's got Taylor Swift up in one of the suites at Arrowhead Stadium, chest bumping, doing high fives, screaming some obscenities. And his mother's sitting there and they're renting out a restaurant after the game. Look, it's I don't know where this is all going. I don't know. Like if this thing's actually going to blossom into a full blown relationship and turn this could be friends like whatever, whatever it is, it's incredible. And on Sunday Night Football, spoiler alert, this is not going to be one of our top five games. The Chiefs play the Jets at MetLife. OK, where if you're into this type of thing, they're favored by nine and a half on the road over at SI Sportsbook. Taylor Swift lives in New York. I'm from that area of the country. That's not a hard commute to get to MetLife. OK, and I'm going to go ahead and guess she's not driving her Mazda Miata over to the game. She's probably going to be able to bypass some of that traffic. There's a damn good chance my opinion should be at that game. And if this becomes a twenty seven to three in the third quarter, we're going to be getting a whole lot of Taylor Swift's Travis Kelce. OK, so settle in. If you think it's bad before we're going to be at Collinsworth breaking it down. Torrico is going to be talking about it. It's it's unbelievable. You either love the Chiefs or you hate them with a visceral passion. I mean, I don't think there's anything in between at this point. Yeah, man, I think the NBC people, the TV executive are saying, you know what, this game might be very awful to watch. So can you send the car to get Taylor Swift so we can have a bunch of shots about her? Because Fox did it brilliantly there because it was forty one to zero against the Bears. And hey, just keep going to Taylor Swift and what, thirty four million people watch that game. So, yeah, you might be honest, I'm in there for her to attend that game. And and you talking about how how popular his team is. And, you know, it's just funny that it's in Kansas City. You know, nobody cares about those New York teams or the teams in L.A. It's in Kansas City. So a big win for the Midwest there. It's it's crazy. You mentioned that because I actually said something to my dad about this over the week. You know, this isn't New York or L.A. or Miami. We're like, listen, Taylor Swift to draw attention anywhere she was. But like there are celebrities walk down the street all the time in New York City. People don't even blink. It's like, oh, yeah, there's so and so. Right. And you just keep moving. Same thing in L.A., same thing in cities like the Miami, Chicago. Can you imagine being in Kansas City and you're walking around Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce drive by in a convertible? It's just like, what happened? And, you know, Mahomes drives by. I mean, it's it's just you know, I've been to Kansas City many times. I love going there. The people are great. The city is an underrated spot. But it's funny because it's not a city that historically you would have A-list celebrities just jet setting around to get into. You know, I'm going to take my daughter to a game because she's a Chiefs fan. We're going to go out there in a couple of weeks, going to see him play Denver Thursday Night Football. And that's going to be like a happening at this point beyond just, oh, it's a football game. Which, by the way, I think I'm going to end up being hit in the wallet for the fact now it's a happening and more than just a game. But nobody's going there to watch Russell Wilson in Denver. Right. Like it's all about, hey, look at Kelce, look at Mahomes. Is Taylor Swift in a box tonight? Where is she? What's going on? I mean, it's my daughter loves Taylor Swift. And so worlds have collided. And she's like, if Taylor's there, we have to find her. I'm like, yeah, OK, good luck with that. You know, I'll do the best I can, sweetie. But it's it's incredible. I mean, that was in a four o'clock window where not much else was expected to go on. The Cardinals ended up upsetting Dallas. That was the dominant headline throughout the entirety of the four o'clock window. So that's where we are now in the NFL. Yeah. And it's funny because I had no clue that there was hints that she'll be at the game. And I saw videos where like there was like parties like, hey, let's see what Taylor Swift arrives. And they were just like, there she is. And they kind of go, wow. Like they just saw the winning goal in the World Cup. And it's worldwide hysteria there. So I had no clue. I was kind of like, I guess, you know, went for me with the pop culture. Maybe I'm a little ahead of you with that, Matt. But even now, even I was kind of like, hey, there she is. But apparently everybody knew besides me. It's funny. I swear to God, I actually had a buddy of mine text me at like eleven in the morning. And he was like, tell us what's going to be at the game today. And I had this brief moment of like, should I tweet this out as a report? And then I looked at Twitter and Rich Eisen was like announcing it to the world. And I was like, you know what, I'm not going to, because if he's wrong, then like everybody's getting crushed today. And if I'm right, I didn't break it anyway because Rich got to it. But my buddy texted me a couple of days ago and he's like, I gave it to you. You should have had it. I was like, it was already out there and I wasn't going to risk my reputation on whether or not she showed up to a Chiefs game. But he was right. Kudos to him. And yeah, we got plenty of camera time for T. Swift. All right. Speaking of the game, the T. Swift may be at this upcoming week, the Chiefs and the Jets. We're going to move away from the Chiefs. The Chiefs did their job. They crushed Chicago 41-10. They look great. So on and so forth. No shock there. The Jets, on the other hand, they lose 15-10. OK, they lose to the Pats. They were at home. They're 1-2 now. They play the Chiefs this week before getting a trip to Denver, which who knows what will happen there. And then they play Philly. So not a great three weeks upcoming. The Jets have been resolute, or Robert Sol, I should say, has been resolute. They're sticking with Zach Wilson. He gives them the best chance to win. Now, should be noted, they signed Trevor Simien to the practice squad, obviously could be elevated at any point to the active roster. As we know, Wednesday, early afternoon, it is that Simien is not the starter at Zach Wilson. A, do you think that changes by Sunday? B, do you think it should? I don't think it will change by Sunday. That's a very quick turnaround to get incorporated with the offense and just learn things about being on a new team. But I could see it eventually happening kind of like Mike White a year ago. And the thing that's tough here for all the Jets players, a year ago, they had to do some kind of behind the scenes. Like, hey, we've got to pull this guy. He's not doing well, that being Zach Wilson. And they brought in Mike White. And it's tough for everybody. You don't want to turn in a guy and be like, hey, you know what? We're not feeling well. We're not clicking here, but we've got to go a different way. Hopefully you understand. So it's awkward. They're going to go through it again. So it's up to Robert Sol to make a decision. Enough is enough. You saw, yeah, they won that first game and it brought you some wiggle room to make an actual legit decision there. But he was bad in that first game. And then the last two, you've lost and he's gotten worse. And he spends the entire week, I'm sure, hearing from teammates, hey, just don't turn the ball over. Just kind of just play safe and give us a chance to extend drives and make plays. And now he's out there playing scared. Now he's overthinking. So when you lose your confidence, when you're playing slow out there, it's just a bad recipe. So I do expect you to eventually take over as a starter. But Matt, just saying that Trevor Sigmund taking over as a starter is not a good thing for the Jets there. So I get there's not a lot of options out there, but like you've got to try harder if you're the GM Douglas there. And at some point, it's like, are you just refusing to take the L on Zach Wilson? You want to get more opportunities because, you know, that was your number two pick. That was your baby. Or maybe it's on Robert Sala being this guy who really believes in his players. And I'm not going to go away from you after one one or two bad games like you did it last year. Do it again. I don't understand what's going on with here. Yeah, I mean, listen, I fully am on board with what you're saying. And so Trevor Sigmund has been in the league. He broke in in 2015. He was a legitimate starter, started 14 games through Denver in 2016, then 2017 started 10 games. Like over that stretch in those two years that I just referenced, he completed just over 59 percent of his throws with 30 touchdowns and 24 picks. Not feeling great about it. Like since then, he started a grand total of six games. So since 2018, the last five full seasons and now the beginning of this one, he started six games. And would you like to take a stab at his record in those six games? Is it one and five? No, it is not. It is 0-6. So he has not been the answer, everybody. He has not been. He started on the 20-21 Saints who actually had some talent and he went 0-4. He had 11 touchdowns and three picks, but he completed 57 percent of his throws last year with the Bears. Started one game, played in two, which was awful. Like here's what I think is going to happen. This is just based off of knowing that area and knowing the way that team operates. I think Zach Wilson is going to start on Sunday. And I think Steve Spagnuolo is going to actually physically put him through hell. I think that game is going to be Spagnuolo throwing about 900 different looks at him. Blitzes, dropping eight, all kinds of things. And you don't have to blitz to get home against the Jets because their offensive line is one of the worst in the league. The Chiefs this year have given up 33 points on defense against Trevor Lawrence, Jared Goff, and then, of course, the Bears leading the Titties. I do not think the Jets are going to move the ball a ton in this game. I think that's a fair statement. I think what's going to happen is after about three or four drives of Zach Wilson getting booed off the field, we might see a change of quarterback. Whether or not that is Simeon or that's Tim Boyle who's been the backup to this point, I don't know. I just think at some juncture you get to where Robert Salah is going to be forced to make a move. Whether or not he wants to is irrelevant. He's going to be forced to. And people who say, well, the fans don't dictate that. You're right, but when you have players who are visibly frustrated during the game as they were last week. When you go through a week where Joe Namath, who is the most famous Jet to ever put on pads, is saying he's got to go and, by the way, we might have to fire the coach and the GM. That starts putting an enormous amount of pressure not only on you but on your owner who at some point is going to be like, hey, Robert, it's time, man. We can't do this anymore. We're getting killed on the back page. We're getting killed in talk radio. Coaches may not care about that stuff. Owners do. And I think you're getting to a juncture where if they're down 14-0 midway through the second quarter and Wilson is, whatever, 3 of 7 for 14 yards, I think you have to yank him. Even if it means nothing in terms of winning the game. Even if Simeon comes in or Boyle comes in and everybody's bad, you have to show you're trying. You have to show you're making some kind of an effort to win the football game. Because, let's be real, barring an act of God, the Jets are not beating the Chiefs with Zach Wilson. It is not going to happen. That might be the biggest discrepancy in talent in NFL history at the quarterback position in one game. Patrick Mahomes is not losing to Zach Wilson. And he's in all likelihood not losing to Tim Boyle or Trevor Simeon, whoever else the Jets will want to throw out there. But at least you're showing that you're trying by putting somebody else out there. By trying Zach Wilson out there to go 10 of 23 for 100 yards and 2 picks, that's like taking a white flag and just jamming it into the field at the 50-yard line. And I think at some point here, Salah's going to be forced, like it or not, to make a move. Yeah, I'm with you. At some point when maybe you're down 14-0 after 2 or 3 minutes and you've got to treat it like a preseason game. You know what? Okay, it's going to be a loss here. You're not going to have a chance here. You're at home. Who cares? You're not going to beat Patrick Mahomes in the Chiefs with Zach Wilson. So try something new. Bring in Tim Boyle. I can't even say that seriously. Tim Boyle. Bring him in. Bring him in and just see what he has there. It's a preseason game at that point. Or then Trevor Simeon, I know it sucks for him to come in on short notice and figure it out. But again, preseason, just kind of do your thing, get people in line chemistry-wise. So I think that's fine. And it's just awkward all around, Matt, when the greatest player in franchise history, Joe Naaman, is saying, I've seen enough. Get him out of here. This guy's terrible. I'm sure Zach Wilson is aware of that. People hear about that. People get asked about that, especially in New York. I don't know if you saw that video, Matt, but Garrett Wilson was in the middle of an interview and somebody broke the news saying, Hey, you just got Trevor Simeon. Can I get your thoughts? And at that point, probably in his head, thinking, okay, finally, it's something different. But at the same time, it's kind of like, it is Trevor Simeon. I can't get too excited. And to his credit, he played it safe and said, you know what, I'm cool with whatever player they bring in for the organization. I support all my guys. But he knows he's frustrated inside. It's at some point, and I put it on a rundown here for the show, like, is it Carson Wentz? Is it Matt Ryan? And my answer to that is, look, there's a reason Carson Wentz is still out there, right? And there's a reason. Let's be real. The Colts and the Eagles both, in consecutive seasons, were like, you know what? Get out. We'll eat so much dead money, it's unfathomable. Just get out. Get out of our building. Right? Washington gave up a real pick for him. Saw him for, what, half a season? You know what? Taylor Heinecke. We're good. Bring in Taylor Heinecke. And then didn't resign him and let him go to be a backup at the Falcons. So you have three teams now in three consecutive years who are like, get out. We're done. We're done. Get out of the building. Matt Ryan, great career. He's done. It's over. He's not. Bringing in Matt Ryan to play behind that offensive line should be a federal crime. There is no world that that's going to succeed. Sometimes, you know, in life, you need to just accept reality for whatever it is. The reality for the Jets is their season's over. No matter who's playing quarterback for them, they're cooked. Now, I do think you have to move off of Zach Wilson here at some juncture because you're just going to lose the room otherwise. But bringing in Trevor Simien, putting in Tim Boyle, bringing in Carson Wentz, you're not going to the playoffs. I don't care. I don't care. Carson Wentz, yeah, sure, he'll throw 20 touchdowns. He'll also throw 15 picks. And he'll infuriate everybody in the room by like week 12. You're not going to win enough games. Your season was built around the idea that Aaron Rodgers was going to come in and elevate what was a strong group. And yes, defensively, it is a very good team. Offensively speaking, it's Garrett Wilson in what exactly? I mean, Breece Hall is a very good player at times. First of all, in week one, he was unbelievable. The last two weeks, he's done nothing. And by the way, I don't put that on Breece Hall. I put that on the fact you can't block. You can't run block. You can't pass block. Now Dwayne Brown's on IR. It's a sieve. You know what Chris Jones is going to do in this game? I mean, Chris Jones is going to basically be taking handoffs in this game. It's untenable. And that's on Joe Douglas for not fixing that offensive line or doing much to try to address it. So, it is what it is. I just think no matter who they put back there, whether it's Wilson, it's Simeon, it's Boyle. Name your random quarterback. I think they're done. And I guess my last question to you on this is, do you think this season could cost Salah his job? Or do you say, well, you know what? He's going to get a pass here because Rodgers blew his Achilles out four plays into the season. Yeah, you know, I think it might be a pair, you know, with Douglas as well, the GM. I mean, you know, he's done some good things with the draft. I get that. But like, the more you're making your points, man, the more I think about like, okay, they had Aaron Rodgers help you. Like, yeah, they're probably a playoff team, but it doesn't feel like they would have been a contender. Just kind of seeing everything now. And then without him, the glaring need of offensive line is like, you didn't do anything to fix that in the off season. Instead, you're throwing money at Dalvin Cook who could barely break tackles anymore. There's a reason why the Dolphins drew a line in the sand. Hey, you're not the same dude anymore. That's why the Vikings release them. But you went all in because you were desperate to make some noise. And let's face it, Aaron Rodgers hasn't been the best GM, you know, over his years with the Packers. Like, he kind of tends for star players and a little over the hill. And Douglas has done a good job getting young guys, but they really overlooked the offensive line. And Matt, they really got, you know, I'm going to say killed because that swap for the trade from the Packers and the Jets, they missed out on a left tackle. I haven't even been paying attention what the left tackle for the Steelers has done. But little things like that, like you go for a defensive end instead of an offensive lineman. You know, you don't, there was no, like, how do you go into Dwayne Brown and Makai Becton as your tackles? Like, if Aaron Rodgers was healthy, he was going to have been probably taking a lot of hits, asking a 39-year-old to move around the pocket to do what he used to do for many years. So that was already kind of a bad issue. So I think for as much as we want to, you know, say, hey, Robert Salah, do something, step up. You've got to help out your team and maybe your job's in the line. I think the same thing with the GM, Douglas. I get it. He's had some very memorable draft classes, but a lot of big misses. And I think sometimes, you know, it's just awkward to have, you know, the GM fires a coach and you kind of bring in a new person. Like the Chiefs, they like to kind of parry everything. Good teams parry their GM and their coaches. So I think for me, you kind of have to clean house. But then again, you're kind of essentially saying, all right, if Rodgers is ready next year, we're kind of going to try to get with somebody else. And if you're the new GM, the new coach, you're probably thinking like, do you want to go and risk all our entire season on a 40-year-old now? So it's a very tricky thing all around. So I think they might be safe, but you're probably thinking about it if you're the Jets owner.

The Bill Simmons Podcast

"Baltimore is another slight under for me. The over under is 10 and a half, which I just think is too high. It's plus one Oh four to go over, which tells you that there's action on the under. I just have questions. I have questions on the defense. Humphrey's already hurt. I wasn't sold on the defense to begin with. They're bringing all these different weapons in. They're relying on Zay Flowers, who is, you know, is young. I always get nervous relying on young receivers. Lamar's health. Not sure about that. Yeah. Lamar just got this huge contract. Never totally know what that, what happens to somebody. And really tough division. They're loaded on the offensive line. They still have Andrews, but this division, I don't, I have them kind of fourth for talent. Yeah. Is that crazy? I don't think so. It was, it's a very different team, right? I think it was like a mass exodus defensively. They lost JPP Peters, Chuck, some of these guys are like, Oh, a little older, but they were like clubhouse guys. So yeah, Clay's Campbell, obviously Justin Houston, all of them. And so that's one thing. The other thing, and by the way, did we talk too much about Lamar Jackson? He got paid. It was fine for months. We were like, well, now are they going to do right by him? He got paid and he's up there with the, with the best. So now he has to play football. And I don't know, this is another thing where Hobart is a great regular season coach, right? He'll usually get you to double digit wins, but I like it slightly under cause I think the division has gotten better. And my surprise to win the division, I can't have four teams at nine wins in this division. So I get it. The thing when I said about how he got paid, he got the contract. Yeah. That brings a whole different level of pressure. Like a year for a year ago, it becomes, they got to take care of Lamar. He's so, you know, it's all positive. Now he has two bad games. It's like, my God, we're paying Lamar all this money. What's happening. And it's just different. And we've seen like, he definitely hears stuff. Yeah. Right. He's definitely attuned to what people are saying. Yeah. I mean, he had to go, he couldn't get out of the bathroom that way. The one thing I want to say is, and like a lot of the experts will laugh at this, but how much is Justin Tucker worth to win total a half a game? Like, you know, in my rankings, I had him as a two point guy and he was the only like special teams person. Cause it's like, he has to be worth two wins. Yeah. So if they're in a, an eight and a team, he gets them the ninth win or, you know, nine and seven when he gets them the 10th one, that's the only thing I worry about with them. Their schedule is a little goofy where they're at Cincinnati week two at Cleveland at Pittsburgh week four or five. And then they go to London and play Tennessee in week six and they kind of have to get through those first six being like three and three. If they're going to get double figures, it gets a little easier after that. Stroud and Richardson, two of the first three. Yeah. The defense is, I think my biggest question mark of anything in the AFC North. All right. Make your case for the Browns over under nine and a half plus 400 to win the division. Do you have money on this? I do. I have too much. I don't know why. I don't know if it's, uh, if it's, you know, because we, we know new people who work with the Browns and maybe this is my little dig, but I don't, I have them at 11 wins. I think, you know, DeSean, I'm throwing it out. Like most people are saying, well, you know, we had a good sample out of Watson and uh, he wasn't good. I was like, no, I don't think he could have been thrown back in there like that and expect to pay dividends. And you know, Elijah Moore's added Goodwin, Cedric Tillman, this rookie out of Tennessee. You got Chubb focused, not splitting carries now with Kareem Hunt. No longer. Yeah. Um, they pick up Thornhill, the safety from Kansas city bookend. Miles Garrett was a Darrius Smith. I think this defense is going to be amongst the best in the division. So I have them. Stefanski is good enough and they now they have Jim Schwartz. Like I said, the fancy is good enough. I think so. What does that mean? Well, he won his most important two arms and two legs and a head and he could hold a clipboard. Listen, he was at home resting. Um, when, uh, with COVID when his team won that playoff game, that's what you wanted. Just get out of the way. Let them do what they can. Their first five, four at home against Cincy, Tennessee, Baltimore, San Fran, and then at Pittsburgh week two, Monday night. Yeah. And that's it. And then they got at Indy week seven and I don't think any is going to be very good, but they have some stinkers on their schedule at Indy home, Arizona. They have an at Denver. If you think Denver's not going to be that good at the Rams Jacksonville at home, Chicago at home at Houston. So there's some wins they can kind of grab and then just try to split everything else. I have them at least 10 and seven nice. And you could talk me in 11 and six, but I have them as a playoff team. They're also kind of loaded and everybody's talking about their pass rush. They have, I think a top four offensive line. Yeah. Chub. You said pass correctly. Pass pass. You got to work on that. Pass rush. I don't like when you say it right. So it's the thing with them. I think they're that one of the high ceiling, low, low floor teams, right? Cause if Watson's actually like good, I'm not even saying four years ago. Good. But if he's just good and makes some plays and does some stuff, I think they're no question. They're a playoff team. Sure. If he's a C plus, they might still be a playoff team. If he's last year's Watson, then I would change my mind. You say low ceiling and I know you said the NFC East had the most wins last year, but if you were to, if FanDuel will make a prop about which, I want to know how to say it's like total wins. Which division is least likely to have a last place team with six wins a lot. Like I, I would say AFC North. Yeah. This is the one, right? Cause NFC East it's probably Washington. Right. Yeah. By the way, I want to ask you when you did your win totals, did you, did they add up to, I didn't do that. I didn't want to do that. I can't take you seriously. I think that's psychotic. Really? That's psychotic. You added everything up. How do you know if your numbers add up? I'm okay. This year I'm a little under on my wins.

"Oh, my God, people, oh, we're back. It's the rich eyes of Joe basketball podcast. I have a TJ here, but I don't care about them because we're talking about me. Let's talk about the Celtics. Oh, hi, Adam. You're wearing a green shirt. OK, you're down. You know, you know what? You know, it's going down. You know what's happening in the next two games, right? You get it. Not necessarily. You get it. Not necessarily. You know what's happening. History is being made. Oh, and 50. Guess what? History made to be broken. Records made to be broken. Smells like oh, foreign here, T .J. I mean, oh, for you have to be more specific because I think you feel like everyone understands what that means. Everyone knows what it means. I don't know. I don't know what it means. You know what? Oh, four means the greatest comeback in sports history. Yeah. Greatest choke job in sports history. I don't know if the bad Yankee fans have to wear that for the rest of their lives. I just don't feel like that's something that everyone knows. And we get to celebrate that like the new like the revolution, like it's 1776. Wow. Really? That's the year we're going to throw out there. I'm not celebrating. Why not? Not all of us celebrate 1776 that way, bro, but OK. All right. All right. So it's happening. We're all we've all accepted it right out here. You've accepted it. You've you're right. You've accepted it. Do you want me to placate you or tell me the truth or tell you the truth? Tell me the truth. You know, we'll lie here. The truth is the Miami Heat are going to win in game six. Absolutely not. They're not. They're not a better team. The only thing doesn't always the only advantage they have is that they're better coached. But well, that kind of means a lot. It means a lot. The coach isn't on the court. Is the coach play the game? But do you think the is there a player? Is there a player coach? Last time there was a player coach, his name was Bill Russell. They won the championship. I mean, he's got OK. He's talking about your coach nonstop saying that he doesn't know. He terrible. was Now he knows what he's doing. How did how did he do that in a week? How did he turn the page from not knowing what he was doing? You know what it was, TJ? You're familiar with the Christmas Carol. Yes. Tiny Tim and all that. Tiny Tim and with the with the with the with the leg and with the leg and the ghost and Ebenezer. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The ghost of Red Hourback came down and touched Joe Mazzulli in the middle of the night. That sounds inappropriate and said, you are now you are the chosen one. Oh, is that what you are now? An official head coach of the Boston Celtics. And I'm giving you all of my knowledge. I'm giving you a box of cigars, because when you win the title, you're going to light it up in indoors. That's a fine indoors. Who cares? I'll pay the fine on Red Hourback. My name's on the court. Game seven. Oh, I'm just assuming we're winning games. We're favorite of the game. Why are they favorite in the game, Adam? If if you think they're going to lose because people are drinking the Kool -Aid right now. Listen, there's been two bad games for the heat. But he didn't have Gabe Vincent last game. You can't even pick Gabe Vincent out of a lineup. And suddenly him not being on the team is like they're playing without Yoke at Jamal Murray and like everybody and just is gone. Listen, Gabe Vincent, that's your argument. Yeah, he's made a huge difference. He scored like 30 points and he's like 30 plus points in like game three. I'm pretty sure he did check these stats. Come on. Keep talking. I'm just keep talking. Just keep talking about this cockamamie heat argument. I think you are getting way too overconfident, Brockman. I understand that you're you're psyched. You're having these dreams of 2004 all over again. But at the same time, let's let's pump the brakes for a second. No brake pumping. This is a little fast. X just go where this is fast. X right now. That's six back seven. Boom, boom. I feel like you're so manic right now with what's happening. And you're being super. We need to talk about this also. Your superstition. This is so insane to me. I don't know if you know this, TJ. But the last two games game four, Brockman decides I'm not watching the game. Guess what? The Celtics win game five. I'm not watching the game. Guess what? The Celtics win. Brockman thinks that from him not watching the game from across the country in California, that is going to make the difference between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics series. Look, that's why so insane to me. Fan is short for fanatic. We all know that. So, yeah, that maybe that does have something to do with it. I don't know. But the thing is, are you going to continue with that pattern? Yeah, not watching, not watching, not watching. Listen, I'm not so I have my own, you know, craziness about me. But the thought that you have that you realistically think that you not watching the game has any. I'm a factor. Honestly, I'm going to send my ring size to Wic Grosbeck for when they win the championship just so I can get one. I'm a factor. Right. I'm not. Look, the thing is, I'm not going to argue that point with you. I know I've done things that have resulted directly. What million percent directly with the Cowboys when the football games like you can't tell me differently. Like, you know why the Sixers lost? Because I did something that I didn't do in game six. What did you do? I put on a T -shirt that I never wore before to watch the Sixers game. And what happened? We lost. I wore the same shirt the three times that we won games. So I can understand where you're coming from. I just don't think that the tie is going to turn. All right. I'll be super rational. Gabe Vinson had twenty nine points. Great. He's never had twenty nine points a day in his life. Seventeen the game after. So not even not even in high school. He never had twenty nine points. I'll be super rational here. The way Boston played the last two games is more indicative as to who they are as a team. They were the reason why they were the best team in the NBA for three quarters of the season. There is a reason why they're in quarters. They were pretty much the best team all year, except for maybe the last month or so. Interesting. I would say Denver was probably the best team. Well, they had a better record than Denver. So Denver pretty much gave up the last six weeks of the year. Probably because Joker, the MVP. But they were so far ahead. It's why they were able to give up. It doesn't really matter for the one seed. Boston was what, a game, a game behind Milwaukee for the best record in the league. Like, there's a reason why they were this good all season long. They're a better team. They're more talented. They have more depth. They got a first team all NBA guy and a second team all NBA guy.

"The Dallas stars scored four goals in the second period in route to a 6 three win over the Seattle kraken, max domi had two goals and an assist as the stars bounced back from a 7 two loss in game three to even the best of 7 series at two games apiece. I think to a man we all knew that we didn't play our best last game and his team doesn't have two bad games in our own. And we just showed that tonight and that's from top to bottom. We had everyone going. So absolutely massive win. Jaden Schwartz scored both of the kraken goals, the stars Joe pavelski notched his 6th goal of the series. Jim Bernard, Seattle

"I just gave you my top 5 rumors I overheard at the combine. We'll see how many of them wind up being true. It could be none of them. Hopefully all of them. And here's one more that I didn't give you. It was beginning to have some chatter because the first overall pick as we know is going to be traded by the bears. One of the 5 rumors I mentioned is that they're already well down the road, I believe. And so. They'll trade out. And Bryce young didn't work out. I met him and his family, actually, in a restaurant on Friday night, could have been nicer. Couldn't have been nicer people. Was he wearing those no bull shoes? It gave him two more inches. He was wearing all the gear. Did you see those? I didn't see those. It was the picture going around of him, the reverse angle from the podium. Oh, is that right? And those no bull shoes. Literally were like lifts. Let me just tell you something here. 5, ten and a quarter. That was what he came in at 204 pounds. And I asked Daniel Jeremiah this and I will ask that of any evaluator that comes onto this program between now and the end of this portion of our calendar. And I'll ask that of any anybody. You've seen a lot of Alabama football, have you not? I need I need the I need to play where he looks small. I mean, there hasn't been one. Give me the play where he looks small. Give me the game where it's just like, man, he looks small. There isn't one, is there. And there may be, again, I'm not grinding tape, not a tape grinder, but I asked out of Daniel. But give me one. Did you see it? Because if you watched every snap and every snap is, he said to me, and he'll come on, you know, I'll have him tell the story to you tomorrow. When he's on, that he may have seen a couple of plays where he thought guy can't see past the line of scrimmage. But he made the throw anyway because he's smart enough to know where his receiver was and everyone else was. Sure. And that's the other thing you hear about him. Is Alabama would give him the game plan or some ideas on Sunday after the Saturday game for the next Saturday. He'd come in on Monday. Not only fully prepared, but with ideas of his own how to fix stuff. You hear that about him and I saw CJ Stroud sling it. Yep. When I saw CJ Stroud sling it this weekend. I swear to God, this is not a troll job. I promise you, this is not a troll job. I thought to myself, how did we beat him twice? Yeah. With those receivers, how did that happen? The guy who he is is a guy that played against Georgia. Best part in the field. He had two bad games against you guys, probably cost him the Heisman Trophy. Cost him a shot at playing for the national championship? He would just. He was awesome. He would just stride back. And flip it. And it was a perfect spiral dropped in a bucket. About 95% of the time. You look good. He was really, really good. And you have to think that the guys in the booth to our right, it's the home booth of the colts. Sitting there familiar he is out there, that horseshoe in the middle of the field. That looks pretty good. I don't think he'll be there for. Nope. They got to go get him. I got to go to one. Right. Yeah. One would think to ensure that they get them. And that's the whole thing, too, is that if you don't move up to go get him, your competition does, you're going to face him two times a year, because the Texans are two. So you got to be aggressive. Then you got the falcons at 8 and the Panthers at 9, and you got the Raiders at 7. And I heard the Seahawks were grinding tape on quarterbacks as well. That could be just to get somebody who might be, if you will, a project needing some time, you're hearing Gino Smith is going to land there eventually anyway. So here's the one other rumor I heard is that Bryce young is through the roof. And CJ Stroud is through the roof. But don't discount Anthony Richardson being first overall. Don't discount it. That's how I started the show today, rich. Those rumors are going to be poppin. That's all we're going to hear. I already heard it after his workout Saturday. I already heard it Saturday. Sunday morning, you're in some whispers, walking around the hallways and stuff like that. Well, just look at the names that are being thrown about. He's built like cam. He runs like Omar and he throws like Josh Allen. Like, what? What all you hear is he's not ready. Who is? And that he might have an issue if he winds up like the way Baker Mayfield's career began or Sam darnold's career began. True? Not everyone's lucky to have Andy Reid come get you. Not everyone's lucky to have the bills come get you and then figure out the right plan around you. That seems like Seattle would be a great spot then. Potentially.

The Dan Patrick Show

"In for Dan and the Dan etz today, we got Jason Cole, pro football Hall of Fame. Sorry, pro football Hall of Fame. Oh, very good. Very good about her joining us coming up in 20 minutes. Maybe he thinks you know what? He's a perfect guy to talk to because since he is a Hall of Fame voter, he can tell us if Derek Carr can be a first ballot Hall of Famer with the jets like the jets told him and their visit this weekend. Yeah, I think his criterion might even be harder and more harsh than yours. I just went a couple of super bowls. Yeah, that's all. That seems like an easy path. The obvious answer to that is plunk it. I know it's a different time space and everything else and how we value. And love our quarterback play, but man, I tell you, it is one of the greatest yarns. You thought we were gonna have nothing this week at the off season. All right, super bowls in the rearview, everybody's on vacation in the league. Not so fast. Hold my beer, say the jets. So we got that coming up in a bit, but before we get to Aaron Rodgers, you probably heard the update from Nick cope right there a few seconds ago. This was late breaking news last night regarding Brock purdy. He was supposed to have surgery today for his torn UCL. And then he would go through the off season. It would be repaired. He would come back and the niners would have to figure out their quarterback situation. Well, now it's been delayed because the swelling in his arm is not gone down enough to have surgery, so they're going to reconvene sometime in early March and figure out if they can schedule the surgery then. So now we're pushing it ahead, maybe at least maybe another month until he can have surgery. This means in a best case scenario. He is back on the football field, throwing a football at the end of August, and who knows what kind of condition his arm is going to be. Will it be a quick ramp up and he's good? Is it going to be a slow ramp up? This means that Trey Lance is the starting quarterback for the forty-niners, beginning of the season. That nothing is happening to stop that from occurring. Yes, he's coming back from an injury as well, but he's going to be cleared for OTAs. He would get the he'll get all the reps over the course of the off season and the niners need to see him play. They need to or they need to give him at least another preseason and regular season of seeing what he has because look, they still haven't seen a lot. The guy's going to go for people are going to go to college and graduate without seeing Trey Lance play more than a handful of snaps in the National Football League. So they know they need to see and play. This makes that a reality. And he's going to be the number one guy the niners will probably bring in somebody else to be the backup to get reps because Bernie is not going to be able to get on the field for a bit. But that's how it's going to go. And Lance will be the quarterback and he'll start and there will be a really short leash because the memory of what Brock purdy did this season is too fresh and maybe he's the next Brady and the desire to see him back on the field will overwhelm things. So the good news for Trey Lance is he'll be the starting quarterback, but how long does he hold on to it? If he has two bad games to start the season, it's going to be Brock purdy time. Hey, purdy's ready. He's ready. He's ready to go. We're going to Brock purdy. That's kind of how it goes, but all this drama we thought we'd get in the off season with the niners at the center of it with what are they going to do? Are they going to trade Trey Lance? What's going to happen is Brock purdy is going to be the guy. That's kind of out the window now because pretty can't throw a football till the end of August. Well, still drama just it shifts. And now it's all on every rep every pass attempt, every failed pass attempt, every pass to air that would have been picked off. You know, all those things we do now with quarterbacks will be amplified to the hundredth degree with Trey Lance in this scenario. Coming back off his own injuries, so there's already that. And we watched with the forty-niners, you don't say it's luck because you were prepared and you brought in a guy that had a good college pedigree in purdy, and he was ready for prime time when duty called. And that's great. But now you're looking at those lightning strike twice. Is he going to be ready and coming off this injury, the fact that you're delaying things in other couple of weeks, maybe another month? Minimum? Leaves me a little unnerved. And maybe you have to start looking and seeing, all right, is it another young guy in the draft? Is it someone that gets cast off? Or is it a veteran that you just want a guy who will keep the line steady for what is a pretty stacked roster? Because if you look at all your pre season predictions, awful lot of forty-niners on the board in terms of representation for the big game in Las Vegas. So curiosity, but for Trey Lance, yeah, the microscope is there. And as I've always said, it's a sunk cost. I know you want to see what he is, but those are draft picks and those are considerations that are long in the rearview. You're playing for 2023. So you can't be caught up in nostalgia and your own sense of, did I get outsmarted? Boy, remember, remember that day when we traded up for Trey Lance? That was someday. I sat on the porch drinking lemonade. It was a wonderful day for us, but hey, those days are gone. We're in a new era now. Well, but how much of the analysis of the past year is what you have to see what he is, like, no, you don't? Yeah, it's been on the field. Yet another guy that was winning if Brock purdy was healthy. And that's a big if. You don't know what would happen in that game. You don't know how this would have proceeded. And going into the off season? Yeah, Trey Lance could have been traded. Remember when he did the thumbs up or the, the wide eyes, I think, was the actual emoji when Rand Carson went down to Tennessee. I mean, there's stuff there. You start adding to that. Guys know what social media little hijinks like that do. And to say, oh, I was just trying to get a rise out of people. That doesn't work in 2023. It has meaning it has gravitas 'cause we said so. Twitter and how about a fresca mic and swollen dome again? That just in last night, the postponement for Brock purdy surgery. And look, it's August at best for. So if he's back healthy in August, okay, that's the pressure is on Trey Lance then from week one. But maybe it's not till September or the end of September, which means Trey Lance has 6, 7, 8 weeks to be able to get it going. But it's not is he going to who's going to win the job and is anybody going to get traded? It's Trey Lance is the guy. This is a big change in the off season for the NFL because of that news with Brock purdy that came in last night. Well, and you know me, I love to tie all things together. We were talking about David Carr being the great hype man for his brother. I mean, we saw several promos from the great Paul Heyman about Brock. Purdy. I don't get those if he's not available. Heyman's gotta go find someone else to champion and beat chief counsel to. So with that now, a storyline that's taken off the board. All eyes, they've never really left. Well, I can't say, can you have eyes on something that is in a darkness retreat? Like can we still have our eyes on it? And maybe it's the Guatemalan hermitage retreat that I've been researching as something maybe for a group experience for us to really immerse ourselves in this world. Dude, if I want a darkness or he'll turn the lights off and I'm not going to spend money on a plate. It's expensive to fly to Guatemala, buddy. I'm going to stay here until. It's an unparalleled experience. And intense seclusion. It's not practitioners deprived of all light and sensory distractions, thus plunges into a deep witnessing awareness of the mind and eventually experiences the perception of the inner light of pure consciousness. Come on, man. This goes down to the monks and llamas in Tibet all the way through. Sure, but I can get that same thing by saying, hey, go into your bedroom, lay down on your bed. Turn the lights off, close the shades. Boom, darkness retreat. Three days, 800 bucks and a trip to Guatemala. Yeah, you know how much it costs you to go do that? $0. It costs me to walk across from one part of my house to the other.

"Continued to influence me even after he was my teacher. Happy birthday while I Ramsay. Love you. We're going to bring in Pearl Jam, and then we're going to do the pod. Proud Jeb. All right, what a holiday treat for me. Peter schrager here has always on Thursdays. John just sremski. He's going to join us. He's from our New York New York podcast. Giants jets, obviously been following them, but also huge dolphins fan. And shrieks, you were just on the sidelines for an incredible bills dolphins game in the snow that the dolphins lost, but to me, I still feel like they're a little sneaky right now. So would you see in the sidelines tell us? Well, the sidelines are one thing, but I think JJ would appreciate my time on the production calls and before the game and speaking with the players, but most amazingly of all, Mike mcdaniel. I mean, Bill, I don't even know if we as a national audience appreciate the greatness of this guy as far as a new personality in the league. He's a comic. He is a jam. He's a gem. And I think the players at first I was like, I don't know how that works in a bunch of alphas and this guy's quirky and always has a line at the end. They love him. They love him because it's a polar opposite of what Flores was. Flores, guys would be walking down the hallway and it's like, okay, I'm gonna dip into this room so I don't have to make eye contact 'cause there was no last year there was just like this like chill around the building. Now, you know, mcdaniel is empowering them. And I'd be curious your thoughts on this and it's a very 2022 thing and billiard obviously the head of a company with so many younger employees. Mcdaniel's whole thing is like, two was 24 years old. He's not a robot. He's a human being. And this is him and me talking and Mike's like, tua was told he was the greatest bust in the history of the NFL Draft for two years of his life. He comes on to the I'm telling him he's going to be all right. He's in the MVP voting for the first half of this season. He's leading propo votes. He has two bad games and he sucks again and he's like and how do you take a 24 year old who's got emotions and feelings and tell him somehow to block it all out. He's like the only thing I can do is empathize and try to put myself into his shoes and try to make him feel like he's got as much security as he needs and as much comfort as he needs and that I've got his back. So a lot of the stuff that Mike mcdaniel is doing with tua, yeah, it's the offense it's building it. A lot of it's from the neck up. A lot of it is mental health. A lot of it is talking like, I don't know, when you hear that and you're an old school coach, you might say, oh, you know, two was making millions of dollars or the fan at home says, oh, poor to, I don't know, Mike mcdaniel is like, the only way to is going to succeed is if we're all supportive of and if we can embolden to it and we can empower him, it's like my number one job is to keep to a confident and to keep him in his pocket and knowing that he's got me as his number one supporter. And I was like, that's a different approach to quarterback coaching that I don't really hear in a lot of NFL coach coaching rooms. You know, JJ, I was watching pregame show a couple of weeks ago. I think it was two weeks ago. They always tap those interviews where there's like 13 cameras and it's like Aaron Andrews or whoever and it's like this formulated interview and I never understand why they have them because I just want like gambling information and whether and why did this line move and oh wait somebody's injured and I just don't know who those interviews are for. And yet I had two as interview on and he talked about what shrieker just said with mcdaniel and how much it meant to him that mcdaniel believed in him and it wasn't bullshit like he was like this guy actually like from day one has just really invested in me and believed in me and I feel like I owe it to him like you're a huge dolphins fan. Have you been following this there in the season? What's been the arc of this? One 1000%. I mean, last year the coach didn't trust him. I mean, it was this queer as day. They were basically throwing the ball, ten or 15 times Florida was trying to win it 13 a ten, 16 to 9, trying to win games at a 1985 and 1995. And it's like, well, it's the modern day NFL. Sooner or later, you gotta be able to move the ball. Sooner or later, you gotta be able to trust your quarterback. Listen, Dave trusted him by getting him unbelievable weapons. Mike mcdaniel looks a lot smarter when you have Tyree kill and when you have general waddle, I mean Trey saw it on the sideline. You get him a little bit of space and he's brilliant at designing plays to get those guys into space. You get the ball down a lot. He's gone, man. Tyree kill. He's gone. They have built an offense. Similar to what tool was running at Alabama, and he's having success with it. And look,

"But he was playing within structure for the most part. And then when they had to sort of do the scramble thing and do the outer structure stuff and the hurry up, it kind of fits him a little bit better. Yeah, I think I forget Gary, what quarterback we were talking about this with earlier in the season, but it's almost like when you eliminate the ability to think about stuff, you know? I think that some players end up playing a little bit better. And obviously you can't, you can't play, you can't play with tempo forever. Yeah. Unless you have a very special kind of offense, but you can't play tempo forever specifically with this kind of scheme. But I mean, gosh, the first drive of the second quarter, he looked unstoppable. Andy unlocked a foot pop Gary for the CJ uzomah touchdown. That was, that was pretty. And all of a sudden, if you're the jets are like, okay, yeah, this is, this is kind of what we planned on. This is what it's supposed to look like. It was a necessary foot pop. I think that was the necessary football. Yes. 'cause he'd broken out a couple this year and just like, oh no, you didn't have to do that. You could just throw it to that guy four yards upfield, and he would have turned around and then run for another 20. Instead of firing that thing out of bounds. So I think a positive step. And again, when we look back, I don't know how many more starts he'll get. I don't know how this is going to wrap up. I don't know what's going to happen this off season. But I think we might end up deciding it's something of an overreaction to two bad games against a Bill Belichick defense. That has made all the jets quarterbacks look really bad for a really long time. The other thing, and this is Ben Johnson, who is just sort of steadily and quietly and stealthily moving into head coaching conversations, just a really cool play design on the short yardage play that ended up being the game winning touchdown. And yeah, it's not a play that is going to net you 45 yards, but it's play action and it's play action at midfield and you can actually you can sort of play with the depth of the drop. The quarterback has some options outside of just rolling to one side and hoping that one of your options have come open.

"Bowl Ganga don't bang. Till next time, folks, Caleb, bye. Well, that is an interesting thought there, Craig. I like that take. It's an interesting put it out on front street. Here's what she had before I got here, and you let us know what you think when this is all said and done who we should keep on this roster. It's an interesting idea. Well, I mean, basically, just trying to make the best of what you've got and if it see how far it can take you, but yeah, having a sample size now. I mean, some of these guys, you got to imagine they've had a sample size, like Trey pipkins. You got bigger sample size do you need for Trey pickup? That was an active, exactly. So at least they made that kind of a move for Trey. But like, you know, just in the other areas of where our deficiencies live. Right now, there's no denying our run defense needs help. That is right now the biggest need of help right now. And I think the right side of the offensive line is either second, maybe, maybe first, I'm not sure what do you guys think? Yeah, I think when you watch us against the run, the only guy that wins blocks is linville Joseph. He's the only one that's getting off a block and in a position to make a play. Yeah. The other guys are all just getting like they get they're back two yards, just holding on for dear life, trying not to give up a huge, like something gigantic. You know, it's like, no one else is winning. And what a lot of teams have done. We've played a lot of running quarterbacks. They're doing the read option and they're make Joey the read guy. So in essence, they don't win the block because he has to just sit there and read quarterback. So now they've taken away our best player by doing a read option and not blocking Joey so that he has to sit there and read. And the only guy on the defensive line that wins in the run is linville. It is running off tackle, and you don't have to worry about the nose guard winning the winning the block. That's why in those short yardage situations, you see Limbaugh in the backfield. But he's back there all on his own. So yeah. I mean, I do think that there will be a sample size that forces us to make some moves in the off season to get Brandon, his defense, but I don't think that that in its daily's mind, he's jeopardizing games or not wanting to play well. So they want to be successful. But he wants to he's not going to make them bad so that he can just get his way in the office though. But I do think that will be an outcome. Right. It's not so much making them bad. It's not making the moves in mid season to. That's what he has, that's what will be the natural outcome because our GM and our owner don't want to make those moves and free agency. And the trade before the deadline. Yeah. And then to answer your question in regards to whether or not we start to see the offense and the way that they were touting it to be, I mean, I feel like we were starting to see that at the beginning of the season and then we just had this dip in the Baltimore New England area and maybe now this is our reemergence, the Phoenix rising from the ashes kind of situation and the start of a startup a new stretch of winds. I don't know. I think we had two bad games. Yeah. I think honestly, you got to look at, I know I'm the Homer for him. I'm Homer for this team, but I'm you look at Justin, when Justin plays well, he can cover up deficiencies. He didn't have didn't have good games last two weeks. And we did not, we weren't competitive. When he's good and like, coach said he's patient. He's accurate. He's just feeling the flow of the game. We're gonna be hard to beat. It might come down to the fourth quarter and it might come down to a kick, but we're gonna be in all of these games. So I have I have confidence. I had confidence and I every week I do, but I have seeing how they did this week. Seeing what Justin did. I feel like this is a great game to build on. And you saw what he did last year, you know? He goes on runs. He has a couple tough games, and he goes on a run. So I see us being able to do that these last, you know, the second half of this season. And I think he's going to do extremely well. I'd like to hope so, yes, I'd like to think that they'll scheme to his strengths. And boy, yeah, I'd love to see some more deep passes to Mike will and Keenan and anybody that can get down there. It's just so fun when he locks and loads and just you don't see where that's why I love watching it on TV because you don't see where he's throwing. You don't see you wait for the camera to pan like, oh shit, what's going on? Yes. It's fun. It is fun. It's a lot of fun. I also wanted to touch on the Chris Harris take. I think there's a reason he's a slot corner now. He's that inside guy. 'cause everyone knows that he doesn't have the speed to run with the number ones outside. That's just a reality. He was forced into it this week because of injury. Right. We were down two guys to von Campbell was hurt even coming into the game. And then we went down another corner, so it's like, he was put in a position where he's not, that's not where he's going to succeed. The reason that he works better in the slot is he has help. If we go man, he could take outside leverage. He has help from his linebacker. He has helped much closer help from his safety. He has a lot more. He can just be kind of that wise veteran that can make plays without having to be that just out of this world athlete that can run a million miles an hour. That's just not who he is anymore. This week was a bad look for him and he got exposed because he had to play out a position. But like you said, it's like he's so versatile safety corner. He could play outside if we're in a zone. If we're in a man to man, that's just not part of his toolbox anymore. He's playing man to man on the outside. Yeah. It wasn't necessarily set up for success. Like you were saying? But it was just necessity this week with our two keep in mind. We did hold them to how many passing air is a 150 or a 160 under a hundred with. Both of our starting cornerbacks out, just keep that in mind. This defense is designed to keep these guys from passing on us. Like that's what it is. And we were able to do that, granted. I was against Jalen hurts. We were able to do that with backups. Right. So, you know, it's promising and, you know, he definitely got put out on the limb for this defense a little bit. And, you know, maybe slightly unfair to what he's capable of doing in his specific role at Kyle was saying. I think those are all excellent points. And Craig, thank you, as always for popping out. Thank you. Always got such great insight and points. We really do appreciate it. And now folks, it's time to go on to the next segment. It's ask bolt fam. Let's see how many we've got today. Time to put your money where your mouth is. What's my son excitement? Probably appreciate it. Catch a little clean look your boy. All right, folks, it's time for ask both fam and we've got lots of questions for this episode. We started off with an old favorite of ours, Daniel the wallen. Who asked him? Okay, okay, okay, so my question is this. Yeah, bitches. That's a damn weird. See you all in thunder alley next Sunday. Kay later I did. I will see you there, my friend. That's right. Yes. Next game, Vikings, Kev hug and Doug and will be in attendance folks. Keep an eye out for him at thunder alley. That's going to be a good game. Yeah, this is done. Junior will be with, if you see, if you see a little like a 6 year old blond kid, little guy on somebody's shoulders, you're probably me. So we'll see you there thunder alley. Big time. That'll be that'll be fun. So keep an eye out, Danielle, thank you for bringing the hype. Let's move it on now to bolt gang. Who asked the question? Oh. Was.

"They got the game clinching interception, Baylor was 7 and one, they were the number 12 ranked team in the nation and it's kind of crazy for TCU because TCU just had their head coach Gary Patterson stepped down last week. He said, midseason, I'm out, I gotta step down. He walked away. And this was the first game for TC without Gary Patterson. And not only this year but in like years and years. And he really brought TC to new heights. And so for them to go through that, losing their stable, longtime head coach, and then win without him, was a big deal. It's very cool, especially beating Baylor. It's just a really cool win for them. TCU quarterback Chandler Morris and Oklahoma transfer had a big game with you for 461 yards and two touchdowns. TCU wore their gray jerseys with purple helmets and red accents. It's my favorite uniform in all of college football they're beautiful. The gray, the purple, the red. That's the kind of Jersey you make in Madden. And it looks so fantastic. I love it. I think that I think I should wear the more often, honestly, Michael, why don't you wear that almost every week? I really love that Jersey. It's really I'm not kidding. It's my favorite Jersey and all the college football. It's the TCU gray with purple helmets at red accent. Oh, dude. It's sick. And of course, they put them on they won. So wear them even more. Number 8, let's talk about the final thing for college football week ten. Fresno state quarterback, Jake hainer. Man, I was so excited to watch this guy. He played Boise state. He did not have a good game Fresno state loss to Boise state 40 to 14 J canner was 22 for 38 passing two touchdowns, three interceptions, all three interceptions were bad decisions. Sometimes I'm like, oh, an interception was tipped or it wasn't his fault because of this or that I can't do that every single one of the interceptions Jake hainer through against Boise state were bad. Bad decisions, bad throws. And this is JK or second bad game this year against Hawaii earlier this year. We had four interceptions. And right now, Jay canner has a lot of NFL potential. I really think that he's ability to throw the ball along the sidelines is fantastic. And he's made some big time throws as your back shoulder throws, throws in a tight windows. The way he beat UCLA earlier this year, what made me go? This dude looks like an NFL quarterback. So the talent is there, the ability is there. And he's been really confident Jay cann has been really aggressive. This year, I think it's part of what has taken his game to the next level..

"Let's do what we need here in Ann Arbor. Go ahead. Hadley didn't just saying You're right. Miss and Jamie picked Iowa and you guys picked Iowa State, Okay? The Reagan listen to the tape. But anyway, uh so any general question you had today, Jamie, or what? So it did the game. Go the way you wanted to see it, bro. Yeah, I believe it did. I think it went as well as could be a running was great. Uh, And they got to keep that up. And but I want him passing the bomb or because you know, with Wisconsin coming up in a few weeks or definitely going to have to beat that, and I also heard Jamie that there was the first time since the 19 thirties. Two runners in the same game had over 150 yards dressing. So that was a nice thing to know. But and I wish I had seen the halftime show and and everything else with The 9 11, But you say we can get on social media to watch it. Yeah, I think the band released released it on Twitter. So, uh, Just search Michigan marching band. Okay, I believe it's on YouTube on Twitter on faith. They I think that it started to make its rounds around social media because it was such a spectacular show. The one last thing about the USC firing their coach. That's going to help me shipping Michigan because they had that corner kid up from the USC commit Jackson. And now he may change his mind. And who knows? He could come to Michigan. And you talked about that star quarterback, too? So I don't know. Michigan might be in a run is a friend of Will, Johnson. So just letting you know, right, Hadley, I gotta go. I'll talk to you tomorrow. 7349 and 18. 50, J. J. What you doing, man? Well, I'm just invested in the glow of the Michigan victory and that sometimes your quarterback doesn't have it. But J Mo, we remind me one thing. How many turnovers it Kate McNamara have again. Had zero, bro. There you go. That's the winning quarterback. That's what I want. And I got to say this. And I hope Jamie from my mouth to your lips to your in, you know, inside information. Booth pants were fantastic. Please Jim Harbaugh, If you're listening and the road this year do not go white on white. Go with blue pants, please. I think everybody was a fan of the all blue here on Saturday. It looks really bad room nights next black Lynch Todd Blackledge said. No, Jim don't don't do the glow do the gold pants. That's what that's what Michigan's known for. I mean, you know, that's what Ohio State plays for, so just let you know. Hey, I just got to remind the people say we play just we can't beat Ohio State. The first two weeks of Minnesota before they're back, got hurt and Saturday organs they ran right down Ohio State's throat, So if you're going to beat the fuckers, you're not going to do it by throwing the ball. Apparently, you can do it by running the ball least That's my perception that again. What the hell do I know? And, you know, game Oh, I'm just, you know, I'm kind of pumped up right now as she There are starting center playing Bob above expectations, So I hope that keeps going on. I'm just thinking, Jamie Before that you guys were touting, you know, just Washington stuff. If they have a bad game, nobody has a second bad game. Why would never Michigan in 98 losing Notre Dame and again truck by Syracuse and 2000 and seven Losing two AB state that getting struck by organ trucking was coming to Washington and I was glad that I knew that was going to happen so I'm pretty happy about that. And my buddy went to the Toledo Notre Dame game because he played at Toledo and we both got a few shekels on Toledo and my pockets a little bit fuller of this Monday. So I'm happy to say that I know you got more calls, so I can't wait to keep going. And whoever misses you don't You need your rest. So you don't so that you can mind the store for a while. I like your new selections of songs Go blue baby. Thanks. Thanks a lot. J. J appreciate that. 73498 10 50 Let's go to Columbus and talk today. What's up day? Dave. David C. Bus. Where's that North side? Here we go. Here we go. Here we go. North Face. Here we go. You had me scared for a second. Dave. Hey, guys, how you guys doing? Doing great man. How about yourself down there? Hey, pretty good. Right? Right. I can tell you right now. Columbus is on this here Right now. They are so pissed off with their with the Buckeyes defensive coordinators. Not funny. I'm hearing stuff all over the place, and that's saying that they want this guy going with the quickness. So wait a minute. I got to ask this question. What happened to The old defensive coordinator. Wasn't that Greg Madison Well, that's what I'm saying. Why did they bring in this guy? And Madison Lee. So you know what? I don't know. But tell the truth. I hope they keep him. I hope they keep him because I think it's about time but how they start pulling some of the pain of these folks in the past. Three or four or five years. Um, so real quick. Um, I don't know why. I don't know why people are complaining about how we won the game. What did her Melwood saying while ago? I mean, actually, it was a while ago. When it was coaching you play to win the game. You play to win the game. We won the game. I'm not so much worried about how we won the game. But we want it now yet do I agree that we have to start opening up or are Are quote unquote playbook for passing. Yes, I do agree because in the big 10, you're not going to win the game that we have to win. Just by running the ball. There's too many good defensive teams in our conference is just flat out to what it is, and I'm sure the coaches know that they're not stupid. That's why they're getting paid The big bucks. Right now. They saw weakness in Washington, and they took advantage of it. Why the heck would I ever want to stop doing something when it's working just to try something else that may not work? Washington did to show that they can that they could stop the run. So Jim Harbaugh and Cruz said. Okay, Well, guess what we're gonna do. We're going to keep doing it till you stop it and it and it makes perfect sense. And I hope they and I hope that once they find something like that Going forward and any other games that they play that they continue to do it If it's passing, If if we find a team that can stop the past and heritage Alpha 500 yards, air it out here it out. Air it out. Because at the end of the day goes back to one thing you play to win the game. No, but that's it. I'm out, gentlemen, How calculator On is always? No sorry. Thanks. Appreciate that. Dave. Enjoy 7349 at 18 50. I lost last caller for the day I got Brock in West Bloomfield. What's up? What's up, J. Mo? How you doing, sir? I'm good, man. I'm good. I just got, uh, one of our, uh, one of another Columbus fan, just text message and answered the question. Meyer lied to Madison to get him to OS to, uh, O s U When buyer left. Maddie left. That's what happened. Wow. Wow. I think, uh, I think, uh, there's going to be the new USC coach because he can't handle losing. He ain't gonna win in the NFL. Everybody said Urban Meyer's going to USC. Why? He said that Day mouth. To me when.

"Money. Let equitable be your guide and by relax, Honda, relax. We got this. And of course, Paul joins us on the West. Her hotline, Paul, as you know, Time of year where lots of people are in and out taking vacation. So I'm in from 10 to 12 this week, and I appreciate you taking the time to join me here on this lovely Tuesday afternoon, and hopefully morning, I should say, and hopefully had a great Fourth of July weekend. Yeah, It was a good weekend. Lancaster actually was one of the towns that did have fireworks. So walk down to see that and it was fun. Speaking of, so we were out actually in dairy, and I have cousins that live out there. They have lots of property. Lots of family over and I took Broadway home. And then I realized Oh, yeah, they're letting out at Lancaster and everybody's walking down Broadway right there, So it took us. That's what you went through is when it was letting out. Yeah, a little bit. After that, we I think we hit it. I think we we It wasn't too bad, but it was still a lot of traffic. Yeah, I can imagine what it was like, though, which which is great, but But you're right. Didn't complain. In fact, my wife and I said, Boy, it's nice to see people doing this again. You know what I mean? Yeah, it was and I just walked down. There is no sense driving. It's good exercise. Walk down there. And, uh, as you said, why drive? Look for a parking spot, then get caught, and that kind of traffic and everything I was home before. Probably Some of those cars even moved three inches. Now I get it. I totally understand that. So last night, you know. We've been talking break and I about the sustainability of Montreal and the way they played the game. They put a really good game last night, but against this particular lightning team, especially but even normally like to win that way this the Cup three more games in a row. Probably not sustainable. Um, you know is that is that Montreal ceiling what we saw last night? Do you think that's as good as they can play? And they still only won the game by a goal in overtime, And it happened in Game two. Also in Tampa. They played really, really well, totally outplayed the light lightening and lost the game. And I thought You know you're normally had Tampa played a pretty good game. I probably would have picked Montreal to win Game three going home. But I thought, uh, Tampa is not going to play two bad games in a row like that. And I don't think Tampa played a bad game last night. It wasn't like game to where Tampa played poorly. Montreal play pretty well. But Tampa still went out their goaltender stolen the game and they still went out one I I thought Tampa played pretty well. But I thought not sure I was excellent. And the biggest thing for Montreal to his goalie was back carry prices not played well in this series after having a great great playoff Coming into the file. And then, uh, you know, he really in the first three games was not carry price at all, but he he was very good, especially helping them. Kill off that four minute high sticking penalty to Shea Weber to 29 of that. I'm sorry to 59 of that wound up in overtime, and actually, it was it was actually a penalty killing clinic by the Canadians. Cary Price had to make some really good saves, but it's right at the very tail end of the four minutes. Where a couple of those shots were long range, right? I mean, they didn't really get anything from, you know, high danger. I guess you'd call that. You know, I mean, it seemed like he had a good look at everything in the last 30 or 40 seconds. He he may I think two or three really good saves. In front. But other than that Montreal cut off the passing lanes. They actually had the better opportunity up to that point. They wound up with a two on one going down and almost scored a shorthanded goal. Uh and they they can be dangerous on the penalty kill have been during the playoffs when to know and Suzuki went down and almost scored the shorthanded goal and you know they have what four shorthanded goals in the playoffs. Former saber. Uh, Armenia has two of them. So you know they're quite capable of scoring shorthanded, but I thought that really propelled them because once they killed that penalty, it was only a minute or two later in the game was over. Yeah, And now they go back to Tampa, Obviously for Game five. I didn't expect the Canadians win Game four. I don't expect them to win Game five. But what I said to Britain was I look at it. Kind of like an N C. A. A tournament game. Where you know the year the underdog. You know, you're not The better team. You can't approach it. Sure you have to. You know, you have to win the game, but take it in five minute segments win the next five win the next five and sooner or later. Now you find yourself in a 22 game going over time. I mean, that's how you have to try and win games like this and series like this. Yeah. You know you're going into, uh, Hornets nest. I mean you in Tampa, they can fill the building, whereas in Montreal, they can only have a few fans there who are pretty boisterous themselves, even though there's only what 3500 or whatever it is in the building. But the biggest thing is as a road team, especially in the playoffs is quiet. The building survived the first 5 to 10 minutes. And if you can do that play well, quiet. The fans get yourself into the game. I think that's uh you know really what Montreal needs to do. That is what they did in Game two, and that's what they need to do if they're going to have a chance at all winning this game. Paul, do you think you know we see copycats and sports a lot with teams. Organizations see how a team wins and says That's the blueprint. That's what we want. Montreal Any kind of like, well any other organization Because look, look where they came from. They get hot. The way they play the the style of play. Is it possible to other organizations looking? You know what? That's what we should be doing, or Do most organizations probably think, Hey, they just got hot at the right time. They got some really key goaltending at the right time. That's really not. As we said, sustainable. Do you think my job could be a team that people actually look at now and want to play like that and build like that and think that's the way to win? You are right. That does happen a lot. But I think you're right in the second half of what you said that this was a number 18 team in the regular season, playing in the worst division in hockey in the North Division. So I think it's a situation where they just got hot and don't forget they lost. Seven or eight and rose something like that, including the playoffs to start the playoffs. I mean, they got down three games to one to the Toronto Maple Leafs. And then you know they have the next thing you know, they win seven in a row. They win the next three to win that series. They sweep Winnipeg. And don't lose again until Game one against Vegas and then, but they still wind up winning that series..

"Well, it would be very sure. Okay, So you make a very interesting point. By the way. It's not just hockey when you talk about a guy in the last year, this contract I think that goes to almost every sport. So you're absolutely right. And I agree with you. So let me ask you this question. Let's just say last game later, you know, he gives up. He gives up six or seven goals on 25 shots, right? And then the last couple games that you put Florian net. He's got a couple shut outs. Do you still stay with it? Are you still okay with that When you have one goalie that might be struggling in the other goalie is just lights out like a brick wall. Do you still are You still okay with that decision? Temporarily. Yeah. I mean, obviously, you know, you know if it if it happens 56 games in a row, and you're like, what the heck's going on over here, Right? Right. But, you know, you know, one or two bad games. It's gonna happen. It's gonna happen to Gloria's well, so, yeah, I certainly you know, would stay with it. And then you mentioned this happens in other sports, and I remember there was a Famous boxer. I can rember which one is his name was But he said, you know, after you know he'd become successful and you made millions of dollars And you know when they asked him about, you know, can you train the same way? And he says, you know those 5 a.m. runs. A lot harder to do and silk pajamas, right? That's true. Now. You're You're absolutely right. So one thing we have been discussing just you wanna show a lot of conversation about hockey all the time. But But last year the night they took a lot of shots, but they didn't take a lot of good shots this year. So far this season. Are you seeing a significant amount of better shots being taken by the Knights? Would think no, honestly, I mean, they did have some pretty easy competition out of the gate, like Anaheim in Arizona are not above average teams. You know, they should win those games. There's a big issue right now. And this is a question really practice time. Possibly. But because the personnel should be there. The power play. Um has been not good, right? I mean, I think that they're still fiddling. And you know they did happen to face like to defensive teams right out of the gate that are both good, especially Arizona. Very good against the power play, so that can get in your head a little bit. When you start off the season or it's not clicking, then maybe you think well, all the things that I was doing. Leading up where I thought was right. Maybe it's wrong and you bailed too early, So I feel like there's a little bit of anxiety around the power play right now, especially coming into the season where the team You know, sort of fizzled out last year for one specific reason they could not put the puck in the net. When you start to see that on the power play, you're not gonna win. You're not gonna win the cup. If you don't have it least a reasonable power play. You're not clicking. It's just not possible. It's just the way the league works. So that's gonna be something in the next, you know. Few weeks or what? Some. They're really gonna have to figure out if they really want to be considered a contender, but for example, that the last time they played, I think they had nine shots that hit the bar the crossbar. Have you ever seen that happen for you? But you're from Canada Been watching hockey for a long time, Daniel. I mean, it happened with this team, but I've never seen before years it feels or actually, for, like the last 23 years. It's like, how often have we heard, you know? Oh, so many posts. Oh, they ran into a really hot gold. I don't keep running into a hot goalie like the backup. Every third string goalies all the sudden has the game of his career against the biggest Cold night in the question. You have to ask yourself is this Is the system in place currently. You know, easily defended like Vancouver did really? Vancouver almost beat us and they should not right with the dead. That team is doing now and that was beat up by simply taking all five men and going alright, guys, go ahead. You can shoot from the perimeter and you get as many of you want to get out 50. You could have 60. Not going to get through the very low percentage. So s so that's it. I think the stigma with this team right now they gotta break through. And I think it starts with the power play. Yeah, I agree with you. It does. Start with the power play. They have struggled there. Let me let me ask you this just a hockey general hockey. Question your opinion, I'd love three on three hockey I love with the NHL has done and over time, not in playoffs, but obviously regular season. I think three and three hockey is so exciting. There's so much open eyes and so much action. I wanted it to be 10 minutes, not five minutes because within 10 minutes, somebody's going to score while the shootout search are exciting as well. I think it's a little to an extent unfair. In my personal opinion. I love the three on three hockey. I also understand that these guys are tired. They just played 60 minutes. He asked him to play 10 minutes of overtime. That's also asking a lot. Do you think it's unreasonable for me to say why do we have to have five minutes of overtime? Why don't we have 10 minutes? No, I mean there's a lot of people actually planning for that, because it's fun to watch. I think one of the issues people have, you know, with the way that the structure is, and I think three on threes. Fantastic. I love watching. It is the way that the points are delivered. And I understand completely. Why Bettmann does this. He wants Ah, lot of teams to be in the playoff hunt. So you have a lot of games that you know. One player. One thing gets two points. Everyone gets one. It's very, very cluttered. They're right for me. If I fire were recreating the point system what I would do it, you know much like what Soccer would do is regulation win is three points. If you win in overtime, you know, on three on three. The winner gets to the loser gets one on Then if it goes to a shoot out, you know they're playing for one point. So what would that do? Well, that would incentivize teams. Especially those in the playoff on two women regulation, right, right And then and then in overtime, especially and then of course, you have the full back because what you see now, like, think about it. If you think about like, collusion or cheating. We don't see this happen. If you're a team in the east and you're playing a team in the West. You both have every incentive in the last five minutes of regulation where it's like tide. Did you say OK, guys, let's just play careful. It's back the book around Nobody score. Let's both lock up a three point And then we'll play for the other one in overtime, right right, because it doesn't affect them, if there any other getting another conference, So in those spots, what you often see in a lot of games is, you know, teams kind of just playing very carefully to lock up that one point Now, you know if you were, if it was going to cost you a point where, instead of getting three points in regulation, you only get two. Well, you've eliminated that issue. But again, you understand why they do it, and that's to keep Standings closer so more teams are in the playoffs. One. Gotcha. Gotcha..

"A great Tuesday here. Tiki and Tierney, CBS Sports radio, CBS Sports Network, A little the hardware Tonight A little Heisman, by the Way, t Did you get that? I honestly don't know the answer to this. Did you get Any Heisman votes. You're less you're Virginia know. So, um Don't think so, because I feel like I had Like one or two bad game, not not bad games, but they were just like sub Like elite games. Got it for running back and that you know at that time, especially because I mean it was pretty good. Running backs choice, Smith. Um, nobody remember him because he didn't make it in the NFL, but he was studded Iowa State. Not not Troy Smith, TROIA. Dave Hoses named Troy quarterback or running back Running back's a little running back. Davis three. David Daniels? No. Uh, no, I think was David's story. Davis and Byron Hand sparred. From Texas Tech. There was some good running backs during those years that I was at Virginia Ricky Williams, also a Texas burying the lede yet who was the second guy you said Byron hands barred, but party is saying the same Ricky Williams firing hands part. I think he was all American. That's that's why I'm messing around one of those Williams. It's one of those things, though, bt It's just why I'll never be able to get it into the College Football Hall of Fame. Because I wasn't an all American, even though I was a C C player of the year and you know one of the greats of my university. I wasn't an all American, because the stipulation that is the stipulation. It's like that's why Say like, I think Joe Montana. He wasn't all Americans are as good as he was. He won't He can't get into into the into the College Football Hall of Fame. I think it was him. Maybe was someone that's ridiculous. Ridiculous rules. It's a crazy criteria in order to get in if you were all time, great, but just weren't on all American. You can't get into the cause. Why would at least offer a little wiggle room? I like the fact that keeping the keeping the bar high one of the issues I have with baseball's Hall of Fame is that its been awarded at a little bit. We've talked about this on the show. But at least I mean, even if you're not all American, But if you win your cut, and it's a major conference, right if your conference player of the year of the A C C lift the velvet rope up for my guy take, you should be. And what is this? I'm all good. They'll be too. You know why? Because, well, five years ago, I went to the academic All America Hall of Fame. That's important to my mom. Remember that what we were or were we were doing a remote way We when we saw that, Where was that where we do it? Harley Davidson remote. Yeah, I remember where it was now, because we know that we went to like five cities with Harley Davidson number one was in Norfolk. I remember because it was close to my hometown, Pittsburgh. We went to we went to get a sworn We stop. Maybe Santa. He was with us, too. But anyway, it's uh, I didn't even know that. I just assume that you're in now. It's so weird Hall of fame. I'm not eligible. Now. They're all my bad leg never allowed on this show. And I wasn't in the Heisman conversation. Even though they put out a pretty great campaign when I was at U V A was gonna cool. They didn't really Yeah, they didn't cool. Campaign to start season because because this is exciting, you have a good running back and Heisman campaign. Well, they would I remember. See that I don't know what they do with the Heisman campaign. Now, I'm sure it's all digital, obviously, but I remember I mentioned it's like, once or twice over the years. We've been together when I was working in Las Vegas. So the year Woz it was 2000 and 2001. And I was at a network that no longer exists. And that was Scotty Ferrall was there with Jim Grow into talent, man, and I was just coming up. And they had remember, I got a package from which they still have. I got to show. There's something I gotta train this sometime. Ah, package from TCU with a spiral binder picture of LaDainian Tomlinson on the cover, and I got a mouse. Um, not a mouse, a mouse, a mouse pad with Antoine Randall l from Indiana. So, like the Heisman camp, that was their push. That was to get it out there. They sent it to everyone. I know they said there, but most people, new media I don't know if they still do that. I know this The eight years that we've been in our network. We've never got that. I don't know what they quite do with the way they used to. But the old Heisman campaign used to be pretty cool. Yeah, you really did. It was it was an effort. It was like a PR effort for sure. Remember Joey Harrington and the and the Nike in Times Square. It That's great, which is also you talk about your school looking out for you, Nike really feel night looking out for you. That's the way you do it. That's right there, overall, pick two and then you know, back in those days, it was still kind of, you know, a diverse award. It's become a quarterback award. That's not tonight and not no more. Not tonight. Tonight, the 29 year drought of wide receivers comes to an end. I believe that I said this like a month and a half ago, right? Only there's only because I saw the Vontae Smith play in person, and I was so impressed with his ability. Um, you know, just, you know, he's getting the football and you did everything to try to stop it. And he still goes for 180 yards. And you know, a couple of touchdowns every single game every week. Every single it was unbelievable every week, including last week in the semi semi final of the college football football playoff, the other guys are they have good resumes. You know, I think Trevor Laurence because he missed two games him. He's out of them running Cal Trask. You know a smudge as he seems like he had the other just just the stats of statistical numbers Tol aiming. The best player on the best team is Devante Smith, and now you could argue Mack Jones, who had an unbelievable SEC. Sec. Forget Alabama record setting SEC record setting season um, should be in this conversation. But if I put those two against one another, I say, who's the better player? To me?.

"Bob brought in the Eagles Doug Peterson out proof full. There are some interesting names, none more interesting than Urban Meyer. If you're the Jaguars, like what is the hesitation like his health, And that's a big thing. That is the only thing that holds me back. The thing that is most attractive about a guy like Urban Meyer is his ability to build a staff but also his success as a leader of football players. It's all been on the college ranks, but I think it would transfer so nations. If I had any advice for Texas football, I would say, Stop acting with a sense of entitlement because the only thing you're in Title, too. Is that your brains beat in 34 times a year, which is what happened the past decade or so, What you are right now is borderline a relevant That's what the Longhorns are there. Tiki and Tierney Heidi, our number two. What's happening? Team gets here to hear CBS Sports radio company from the Rocket mortgage studio when he needs certainty in the whole buying process. With a loan that fits your life. Rocket candle. Good old go What's happening? Hope everybody's having a great Tuesday here. Tiki and Tierney, CBS Sports radio, CBS Sports Network, A little the hardware Tonight A little Heisman, by the Way, t Did you get that? I honestly don't know the answer to this. Did you get Any Heisman votes. You're less you're Virginia know. So, um I don't think so, because I feel like I had Like one or two bad game, not not bad games, but they were just like sub like elite games. Got it for a running back and that you know at that time, especially because I mean it was a pretty good running backs choice, Smith. Nobody will remember him because he didn't make it in the NFL, but he was studded Iowa State, not not Troy Smith. Troy Davis was his name Troy quarterback or running back running back's a little running back. Wanna see Davis? Three. David Daniels. Now I now I think was Davis Story. Davis and Byron Hand sparred. From Texas Tech. There was some good running backs during those years that I was at Virginia Ricky Williams, also a Texas burying the lead who was the second guy you said Byron hands barred, but party is saying the same look, you wouldn't beat Viren hands part. I think he was all American. That's that's why I'm messing around one of those Williams. It's one of those things, though, bt It's just why I'll never be able to get it into the College Football Hall of Fame. Because I wasn't an all American, even though I was a C C player of the year and you know one of the greats of my my university. I wasn't an all American, because the stipulation that is the stipulation. It's like that's why Say like, I think Joe Montana. He wasn't all Americans are as good as he was. He won't He can't get into into the into the College Football Hall of Fame. I think it was him and he was someone that's ridiculous. Ridiculous rules. It's a crazy criteria in order to get in if you were all time, great, but just weren't on all American. You can't get into the cause of why would at least offer a little wiggle room. "That with having played this past Sunday, combined that with they actually hate one another Round fans totally resent Steelers fans for all of the Steelers success, Steelers fans look down their nose at Brands Fan. Browns fans has a total punching bag, and now you have it for the playoffs and You can't know what's gonna happen here. Even though the Steelers air afford a half point favorite this game, you can't know that the Steelers are going to turn into the 11. Those dealers And not the team that lost three of their last four. You can't know that the Steelers just flip a switch. Goodbye. But we can't know that Baker Mayfield and that ground attack and Myles Garrett coming in off the pass. Rush is not going to make Mike Tomlin and Big Ben go home early, like they've done many times the past. The unknown, combined with rivalry combined with it being outdoors on grass in January, combined with the history of the Browns, making it back to the playoffs. Combined with the last time the Browns were in the playoffs. This was the matchup. Rounds and Steelers January 2000 and three in a crazy back and forth the game in which The Browns held a huge leave. The Steelers came all the way back to rip out their hearts. This has all the makings to me of the most interesting game of the weekend. Plus, it's in prime time at night at Heinz Field Freezing cold January night. I like it. That's my number one Mariah's What's your What's your Least Interesting matchup? Because I think yesterday you said that your most interesting matchup is Ravens Titans. It is, I think, if you just do it like a kind of macro view on it. I think you have two very un interesting games. I don't think we'll be close. You have won a game and I think three really good games, so my least interesting one I actually think is Washington bucks over the Saints pares because I look at these two bad games and I think OK, well, worst case scenario. What's the storyline? Worst case scenario. The story line is oh, my goodness, this Drew Brees go into retirement. Losing the Matrix. You're risking the bears like the ripple effect of that, even though I don't think it'll happen is a little more than the ripple effect of if Washington beats the Bucks. I think the story line is all right. Brady probably looked old. We know he's probably coming back with Tampa. But this is another scenario where the under 500 team hosted playoff game and everybody go nuts that they got the host the game. So I think it's very un interesting that Alex Smith will probably get blown out. But even if there's a worst case scenario, I don't think it's as bad as the worst case syrup with saints if they were to lose, which is why I think that makes it slightly more interesting than the Bucks in Washington, if that makes any more sense. Let me go back to the Steelers and Brown to that playoff game. Do you remember this playoff game buddy? Chance Steelers and Browns playoff game. I vaguely vaguely, I couldn't tell you who started a quarterback for the Browns of that game. Nobody came. Not nobody can Because wait till you hear this quarterback matchup. This was after the 2000 and two season the Brown had gone nine and seven. The Steelers were 10, 5 and one so this game was played at Heinz Field wild card weekend. The Steelers were led by Tommy Maddox. This was two years before they would draft big Ben Roethlisberger. The Browns, led by Kelly Holcomb. Mm. The Browns jumped out to a 24 7 lead early third quarter 24 7. Maddox helps lead the Steelers come back. Get it to 27 20 and then 27 21 after the extra point, But Holcomb Goes big toe. Andre Davis, putting them up 2033 to 21 with under tend to play. It remains. 33 21 Steelers trailed by 12 until three minutes to play. Maddox finds Hines Ward for a touchdown 33 28 extra point. Good. And then another touchdown with just 58. Seconds to play makes it 34 33 as Chris for Ma Tu Mama Fala. Runs it in from three yards out. The Steelers go for the two point conversion and Antwaan Randle El Hits it. 36 33. The Browns come back down the field but stall the two teams combined for nearly 1000 yards of offense. With a Tommy Maddox vs Kelly Holcomb Shootout, Steelers Surviving advanced 36 33. That's the last time the Browns were in the playoffs. I I know why. I don't really remember that game because that was leading in to a New York giant wild card game that well car weekend yet write the story lines. If you look at the four games that wild card weekend that is one of the more eventful wild card weekend ever That's exactly right. Because the Steelers and Browns fed into Niners and Giants Trey Junkin botched snap. That's exactly right. And so we had back to back insane comebacks where the Giants led by 24, right, Yes, they led by 24 the instant shock Easter on ice at the crowd so that that day was wild, but they're they're also comes off Saturday night. Michael Vick goes into Lambeau and beat the Packers the first time the Packers was a playoff game Lambo and to start while car weekend Peyton Manning in 3 2005 years of his career. Loses 41 nothing at the Jets in the middle. It is that that weekend as well, Yes, those are the four games from that wild card weekend. So it's a wonder when the last time the Browns Rin it gets lost in the shuffle because it's an incredible story line weekend from wild card weekend. Wow, we had Peyton Manning getting absolutely trounced by the Jets. 41 nothing. That's where Herman Edwards is basically embarrassed that they were winning by so much over. Peyton Manning. And then Mike Vick having the game of his life at Lambeau Field when nobody thought a dome team could certainly win at Lambeau Outdoors Night game. Leading into a 17 point comeback by the Steelers over the Browns in a shootout led by Was it. Jeff Garcia leader to come back for the Niners? Yes, it was followed by a 24 point comeback and one of the craziest endings in playoff history with the Boche snap. The throw down the field and Trey Junkin signed as a long snapper and the Niners surviving That all happened. One wild card weekend. The wild card weekend of January 2000 and three amazing Get us something like that. This weekend. We got six cracks in that that we could. We only had four. Yeah, and also I know the NFL's going 40. I don't need them. Labeling. This is super wild card weekend because also it's not a one off like this is the beginning of what this is gonna be forever. Yes, just wild card weekend. There's nothing super about it because every year going forward, this is what it's gonna be. That's exactly right. This is just the new wild card weekend that super wild card weekend. Like Super Tuesday. Yeah, we're super Dave. Course, Super Day. When we come back here on the show London Fletcher is going to join us to talk about that bucket Ears in Washington matchup. How does Washington slow down Tom Brady in the Bucks? D, a CBS Sports radio But, uh I'm still sit. Oh, honey,.

"Don't think it suits Lamar Lamar strength to try toe throw from behind in history and thus far is his early career doesn't really support that. But that zah scary team again is attended any cheese fan. That's the team that scares me the most every single year just because of that offensive style of play, But I'm in agreeance with you as well. I think the bills there are the team come gunning for the Chiefs. That's not why I called in again. I'm a Kansas City transplant in Chicago s O. I hear a lot of, you know, bears talking a regular basis and kind of keep with theme of Davos, Sweeney when keeping it real goes wrong. So let's say you're the GM for the Bears on your next move, you know, could be keeping a real or keeping real goes wrong. Do you lock up for a risky for a franchise tag and pay him with the upper echelon quarterback? Knowing that he is not necessarily shown that ability, rent them for a year and see what you can do or do you cut him loose? Go with Nick Foles because they haven't for another year draft of the quarterback and start the whole process again. I'll listen out there, man. Good night. Yeah, Buffalo. I Mean of Chicago. Sorry. It has interesting situation on you know, given that they looked like a team that was they started the season well, and then they look like a team that was bound for disappointment. And and since then they've righted the ship. To a certain extent, eight and seven right now are the bears and that that's an interesting dilemma. I've been asked about Mitchell too risky. A bunch over the last couple years, and I never quite know the answer, because I think clearly he's probably not the guy right, like at this point that would have shown itself. And I know he's still relatively young in his career, but we're talking his fourth season now. Talking his fourth season, Um and and because of where he was drafted, who he has drafted ahead of the expectations are maybe at times going to make it look like he's worse than he is because he didn't meet the expectations and he's played okay. Sure he's played relatively well. This season. I ultimately think you know, the the future quarterback of the Bears is probably someone else. But I don't hate the idea that you just suggested of, you know, because Look, what's the problem? When you sign these big court of these quarterbacks to these big deals, they eat up your whole salary cap and you can't make the other moves And, you know, it's one of the reasons the Eagles are in a tough spot with Carson Wentz right now because they signed into that deal if he wasn't on that deal I don't think there would have been a zoo much time that it took to to make the switch. T Jalen hurts, And there'd be less worried about what they do with him going forward. Um so obviously you can't sign Mr Travis Key to some sort of deal like that. He's not worthy of that kind of deal. And that's that's not on the table. But the idea of one year on a above market value contract. I don't hate it. I think you have to see how the rest of the season plays out first, though. Because it is the other option too much worse, you know, full zip, eventually going to draft a quarterback unless somebody you know, unless Dak Prescott becomes a veil. I don't have to look at the Bears cap situation, all that, But unless you know there's a situation like that. That arises. I think you have to see how this season plays out. See how true risky place if he plays well the rest of the year. I mean, not that there's much e se the rest of the year like there's Ah, bunch left for the Bears. But the Bears are still in, um Live situation at the moment when it comes to the remainder of the season. Um And their their playoff hopes are are not totally out the window. What? I'm gonna see what their playoff scenarios Our, um I know that they you know, I said that. I guess I should stop saying sea year. That would be just one more game. I suppose that's ah. That's the kind of thing that that shows you that I don't um Totally have it, have it. Down. I don't totally know the answer there. I mean, is there a team friendly contract? You could sign too risky to I think at this point, and I love Nick Foles and what he's accomplished with the Eagles, but Your potential is better with your risky So I think if you're the Bears, you could consider franchise tag for one year or you could consider, um, you know, Some turn a team friendly deal that that doesn't pay him at the upper echelon of quarterbacks as you evaluate the position going forward, But do you just cut bait? I would Go against that at this moment. I think I'd go against just purely cutting bait. Let's go to Ah, Brady and Windsor, Ontario. Brady. You're up next here on CBS Sports Radio. Yes, thank you. Happy, Happy New Year, Robin Wells Fargo's Berlin's concerned their pleasure in school, Florence in the southern states, So maybe they should have stayed the HCC, but I think Justin Fields redeemed himself. After those two bad games that because he's shown a lot of heart last night, coming back from that from that injury to his hips, and I guess his kidneys and during those six touchdown passes so I think he might have gotten himself back. And the you know is one of the two or three top quarterbacks, you know, after Ah, Trevor Laurence and another thing, eh? Yes. Brian Flory to me is the NFL coach of the year? Because, remember last year they stand off almost historically bad in a lot of people find me Go on 16, and he began to right the ship and then Away. Florence has handled the Fitzpatrick versus tunnel below a cornerback situation. Now you have to give a lot of credit to those two players because, like they shown themselves to be totally team first players toe, especially Fitzpatrick to handle this situation because A lot of times it would have caused the locker room rift. But four floors gets a lot of credit for being able to, um, handle this and get these players to see that these that situation now this is eventuate itself. Is, you know, best handle the way it's being handled by, um, either. Ah, tongue of Lord Fitzpatrick, depending on who's playing better playing, and I want to know. Where do you think Dwayne Haskins next team might be after you know, the football team jettison them earlier this week and taken off the air And thanks for putting me on Robin Well, look, Haskins is a reclamation project. You have to hope that, uh, Dwayne Haskins, um, you know, learns from this. Because clearly is on the field play and is off the field behavior. Contributed to what happened And that led to some, you know, reckless commentary is over. You know, Booger, McFarland said about black quarterbacks, which seems ridiculous given. I just said What did Johnny Manziel signed with the Virtual Football League or the Some sort of some sort of upstart league. I don't know. I don't know what Johnny Manziel on Brian Leaf and other guys like that say about white quarterbacks. Um, but Dwayne Haskins. He needs to, you know, he's responsible for his own actions and his own image surety and his own lack of performance and the lack of performance is ultimately I think what led to the end of it there? They didn't think he was good enough. And then therefore, when you you add the other stuff in, you know you're not going to get that that Crack. You're not going to, you know, be the franchise quarterback. I think you'll see a bunch of teams interested in Haskins because of where he was once drafted in the fact that you're not bringing him in at that same level you're now bring him in. As you know, a serviceable guy. The Panthers with the team that I've seen the most Out there being linked Taskings, But it's one of those kind of, you know, diamond in the rough situations and you're not evaluating him. Probably at the same level is Washington was once evaluating him that you're evaluating him at a different level with kind of like we were just talking about to risk. You're evaluating Travis Key in a different level now, but too risky, you know, has played pretty well. As of late and you know is record with with the Bears. This year is actually pretty good, better than fools and the way they produce. So sometimes you know, guys can get a little bit better as their career goes on. As well with.

"Back with the starters where it's time for a little fill in the blank playoffs edition fund trae the celtics terry rozier scored twenty three points and hit a monster three late in game one in boston lemme follow that up with twenty three points and eight assists last night all while not turn the ball over in either game getting basically anywhere you want to after last night's game when asked about scary terry eric bledsoe threw mad shape terry rozier biddies fill in the blank eric bledsoe trash talk was one wakes us because the thing is like benji the shot as you know end of the bench guard i mean rosie's playing at the painting credible series so just sort of who he is i mean i understand you're in a playoff you lost ease had two bad games bledsoe but he could have at least responded in a little bit more of a respectful mana agree he is being petty that's my word for it not as cool as weeks he's definitely but he's getting played his team is getting played it's not like they're up to oh and he can just sort of take this high horse they're getting schooled and maybe he was sort of grilled on social media and in public after game one when he was lost on the floor one zero zero that big shot and maybe he's sort of acting out he's just angry had enough of people talking about or vote it to him at the same time this is his first foray into the postseason as a starter i expected a little bit more and the entire orgnization expect a little bit more i think we're gonna see a lot more malcolm brogdon who only played eighteen minutes off the bench she's gonna take a lot of his minutes next game here.
