At least one, hundred twenty children remain in detention by immigration and customs enforcement ice more than two weeks after the July twenty, seven, th deadline set by a court order requiring the agency released them because of the health risks posed by covid nineteen. Ice says had a month to plan for the release of the children after the court order was issued on June twenty-sixth. By California Judge Dali G who oversees the Flora's settlement agreement, a twenty three year old class action settlement that laid the groundwork for children's rights in immigration detention. Per the Flora's settlement, federal immigration officials cannot detain children for longer than twenty days. Despite. Dunkirk Awards

"Welcome to film spotting, we will get to our Nolan Review Awards. Later in the show, we might have an for those awards picked out by. Then we might not. We will share our awards for favourite supporting performance and lead performance from this retrospective of the work of Christopher Nolan will also share our picks for best Nolan moment in the overall best moment or seen after we have revisited all ten of Nolan's films and that will culminate with our Christopher Nolan rankings. The definitive Christopher ranking for each of us one to ten will there be some shifting Adam Gimme a tease. Shifts definitely from the last time, I posted a Nolan ranking on letterbox. There's been some movement Yep me too one I think you'll like I don't know if you'll like it enough, but you will like it I though the World War Two movie from Christopher Nolan that we didn't know we needed dunkirk. The enemy tanks stop. Why? Why waste precious tanks when they can pick from the. Barrel. Their full hundred thousand men only speech. Your position. Josh, coming into this rewatch was that done kirk is Christopher, Nolan's best film and there's at least one longtime listener and regular commentator who agrees with you that we are culminating this overview triumphantly with the filmmakers greatest achievement Adam Grossman in Vancouver says like many of us. I've completed my Christopher Nolan Review. Biggest takeaway hoover is a really hard were dispel. Well, second takeaway. I've decided dunkirk is Nolan's career highpoint while my heart loves interstellar the most good on you Adam and I. Hugely Admire. and. The Dark Knight for what they meant to Action Cinema and Superhero movies respectively dunkirk is his masterpiece got laid down for you tenant. I just don't know how anyone could argue that the legend of dunkirk could be told any better the setup and the first eight minutes alone from the falling paper from the sky to the distress. Cry of where's the bloody air force is a wonder of a short film. In itself, the lack of dialogue works perfectly for what this movie wants to achieve with. Hans. Zimmer's relentless scored doing all the audio work that's necessary among all the chaos. There are frequent moments of grace. Kenneth. Branagh face as Commander Bolton as the cavalry arrives in the form of the civilian vessels the empathy as Peter Tells Killian Murphy's PTSD soldier. The young George will be okay and no moment more than the shot. Be Okay and no more than a shot of Tom Hardy's planes silently gliding over the beaches of dunkirk knowing his job has been done. dunkirk is also uniquely Christopher Nolan Movie One where his signature use of time has never melded together better and more cohesively than it does in the final twenty minutes of this film while Dunkirk will understandably never be a wholly enjoyable or easy rewatch. It's one that gets richer and richer with repeat viewing. Now, Adam Mention Nolan signature use of time, and that is one aspect of dunkirk among others that certainly connects to his entire body of work. But there are other aspects that Mark Dunkirk is unique. It is only film that is based on historical events, which means it is inherently rooted in the past and yet I'd argue it is only film that truly feels present tense meeting there are no. Dead parents or wives or forsaken children or other tragic events haunting the air's barrier played by Tom. Hardy the Moles Army private Tommy fiene whitehead or for the most part the sees Mr Dawson played by Mark Rylance like all Nolan protagonist there's plenty of personal sacrifices on display but no guilt no sense of futility about toning past actions just the seemingly futile need to survive the current event that they. Are Tragically experiencing here's something else that argues unique about dunkirk as we every other commentator on Dolan's work is discussed in some form or fashion for all those dead parents and wives and foresaken children. There's nothing so emotional or borderline sentimental in any of his previous films as the climax of inception and yes, mileage may vary there which led to interstellar and not only mcconaghy's crushing breakdown watching twenty three. Years Worth of miss video messages from his family but the verbalize message love is the one thing we're capable of proceeding that transcends dimensions of time and space. Maybe we should trust that even if we can't understand it, it's hard to imagine any character in previous Christopher Nolan movies saying something like that which led to Dunkirk am I crazy josh this is his most blatantly sentimental and even heart film. And if so is that what establishes Dunkirk as his best its balance of coldness the sober portrayal of the hell of war of life in the misguided choices, some men will make when facing death with warmth. In the compassionate inspiring choices some men will make to maintain a way of life. So a lot of subtleties in that question and you're onto something so you're not crazy I think I would distinguish. The word blatantly, I. Don't think this is blatantly emotional or moving, but I do think you're onto something in the fact that it is maybe his most heartwarming in where it ends up and let me kind of try to parse those. You're right as long as the Nolan Canon has convulsing McConnell. Interstellar is going to be his most blatantly emotional I mean you can't have a scene like that without registering that on it surface. That's his most emotional movie. But I will also say that I find Dunkirk to be his most emotionally affecting movie maybe even more. So than inception, which we about how I did find that very moving especially in the character of Mal. So yet dunkirk is really a unique thing even as it's working within the strands and trends that we have been tracing in Nolan's other films, I. Think the heartwarming aspect is probably a part of that. You've nailed it there in that it brings us to a place that. Is One of Constellation and I think it's earned because I think up until that point we have just been suffering alongside all of these other characters in so many ways and we've also been recognizing as the movie does that this is You know a an account of a military failure, a huge defeat and so for the movie to kind of offer, some sort of solace at the end of that I think is. In proportion and well

Simone Biles Makes 'Vogue' Cover Debut

"Move on. Let's talk next. About Simone biles on the cover of Vogue. this is the August issue I believe crowd, yes, correct, and it was timed up for the Olympics which did not happen as you probably are not going to happen as you're likely aware. Yes, I wanted to talk to you about this just for a couple reasons. I was like pretty moved by the story and I just WanNa say so that their profile was written by Abby Aguirre. Who I believe is the same writer who the world, and also we gave a bit of a hard time to you. Because Riana surprised her with her interview a few months back, and we weren't super prepared for. She wasn't super prepared for it, and there was a little pushback there I she was prepared for this and I. This is A. I found like a moving piece. And some of it is the timing there. The reporting begins in March, and it is before lockdown has started for covid nineteen, and before the Olympics have been canceled, and so she's watching Simone biles. Who is the greatest gymnast of all time like? Asked process the this like major personal setback that Olympics what she's been training for. You know Simone biles twenty three years old, and which is on the older side for gymnasts, which is mad Jim. That brass unforgiving. An unforgiving sport in a lot of ways and so having the Olympics post be postponed a year. In addition to you know the training schedule because it her level. There's a level of optimization that we can't even begin to understand but. That has serious consequences for her and her ability to compete, so she's wrestling with all of that. And on top of that if I If you've been following gymnastics at all, then you are aware of just the absolutely horrific crimes committed by Larry Nassar, the former USA gymnastics doctor, who is now serving up to one hundred seventy five years for the sexual abuse, gymnasts and Simone. BYLES has spoken out about being survivor of his abuse and continues to be just a incredibly outspoken. Advocate she isn't an advocate, but she is really trying to hold USA gymnastics accountable, because it is obviously like a much larger problem in organization, and she is doing that while at the same time trying to be the world's top gymnasts. Yeah, it's like so unfair that she has to hold them accountable while also being the best like, can't she just be the best i? It's like it's like yeah, and there is and the. The piece does a great job of putting about all in context, but there is one line which is Simone. Biles is explaining her reaction to the postponement of the Olympics, and she talks about it for all of the athletic and physical and reasons that I just described, but she also goes another year of dealing with USA gymnastics I don't know if I can do it, and because of everything that she's been through and I. was really moved by that and by the whole story, and I mean she's obviously just inspirational and tremendous success. So I. Recommend reading it I think it is exciting that she is on the cover of vogue, because vogue as we know has historically I'm not been representative especially of. A black people and it's pages, and certainly behind the pages as well and so it's great to see on the cover. There has been kind of a side conversation about the photographs. Were taken by any bits and quite frankly are just not great. They are not the standard that they should be for someone on the cover of Ogan ally. The problem is because it does not appear that they are. Let for a black woman they. Don't have the technology and this is a continuing. This has been a long problem in TV and movies, which is just that? Many of the photographers and camera, people and lighting technicians just have not learned how to light for people of Color. And? It's a long term problem, but I think. You know if you're gonNA put smiles on. The cover faded out. Learn like earn it doesn't it doesn't matter just learn how to do figure something out and. You know there's there's another question of. Should any of yeah as I say like? The photographer look I understand she's famous, and like maybe in some ways that gives the story some attention that maybe it wouldn't get but like how about putting some literally putting Simone biles in the best possible. Yes, exactly exactly and if you're going to have an elite, do it then. Make sure. She learned how to do it.

Training Topics of Speed and Power Development in American Football and Field Sports

"Hey everybody welcome to another show, so this one is a little different and instead of me, interviewing someone or instead of throwing out a Q. and A. and answering your questions I'm actually being guest interviewed by a guy who has an absolute stud resume in the field, and that is Josh hingst. I will say so. Josh I I meant to interview him for a long time now, but Josh flip the script on me and asked if he could interview me on a speed and power in related training topics for American football. When I say football really no matter what sport you work with it, it's this is really applying concepts of of speed bio mechanics for team sports so so American football team. Sport and really translating sprinting speed, and by a mechanic topics really into that environment the. Josh has a superstar resume. He's the head strength coach of the two thousand eighteen super bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. He's had past experience with the Jacksonville Jaguars the University of Nebraska the Atlanta Falcons as well as Florida State University. Josh multi talented, not only is he a strength coach and Ex Anna successful. When at that doing? A lot of work particularly with the Eagles in integration of Sports, science, and really being on the cutting edge there, he also is a sports nutritionist and has done a lot of work in the past in the realms of sports nutrition at some of his previous stops in twenty thirteen, he co-authored Athletes Guide to sports supplements out when he was at the University of Nebraska. I I met Josh back in two thousand four in Barcelona Spain, and it's been phenomenal to be able to stay in touch with him. Since then I'm super humbled. He wanted to interview me. This is like a it was a great opportunity to share my thoughts and put some thoughts together on these topics, but again just super humbling to be interviewed by a person with such awesome resume who I've been trying to get as a typical interview. Guests for this show so anyways we'll. We'll get onto it here just a couple of quick topics that we are. are going to run through is sprint a sprint, development and sprint mechanic development and speed drills particularly as it pertains to team sport. We're GONNA get into concepts on training foot. some particular concepts that I've that really stuck with me from a dairy bar that I've learned from him and how that Pertain Sport? We're GONNA. Talk about is metric, hamstring, injury, prevention and more. This was a really fun talking. I, hope you guys enjoy it so so let's get onto it episode to ten guest interviewer. Josh, thinks, and I have any conversation on speed and power topics. All I. I wanted to start off by Sharon. You know just the thank you for You know it's not often that you know people. Like me. Get a chance to thank people like you that you know that you're learning from that. You're progressing from. N. A just appreciated that. You know it's been a really good thing. I that there's others in the field like Mike in my shoes. That want to say that and. Yeah so I. Just I mean a lot of different thoughts. I mean. I think probably for me. You know I think you know a lot of the questions that you of have chewed on and and some of your interests. It's fun because I think we can all see where your brains at sometimes based on some of the people that you're bringing on the podcast with. Health or Of different things like that, but I think it's all really good good stuff, but I guess the first question I had is is probably one that you've answered a lot I think it's just more or less your take on some speed mechanics and running drills, and those application teams or seen I. Think a lot of people in my view. Shoes are like. Like well. We're not going to change that now. You know we're getting twenty three year old athletes in you know. Are we wasting our time in those types of things, or are you feel what you would do? You think that we can make make change. In how much time and energy do we devote to these things? Yeah, so that's a good question. I would say just in my time working with team sports in the running situation and thinking about it, and watching and observing as well I, think the I'll start with the good, actually because I think that it's in my nature to sometimes be a little contrarian as I was mentioning before we start recording I try to stay balanced. Try to really still like both sides of the equation, so with the common sprint drills as the bees, and whatever else there isn't all the marching type stuff 'cause I guess if we think of Sprint Joe. We think of a march. It's not going to fast horizontally. You're slowing the horizontal component down so there's some things in the vertical plane that. You can work on. It's all start with the positives I i. do think that there's always a bandwidth I mentioned this and speed strength, but I think that even if there's a disconnect between the actual mechanics in a marching bass drill for an athlete who might be a very muscular type athlete like they're very muscle driven they they tend to really squat deep in their movements, which isn't a bad for being a football player and Rennick Selah Rating. That's really important. But for someone who may not be in touch with their feet so much I think it gives a good opportunity to give them exposure for some of the vertical contacts ply metric in some ways so I I think that's okay. I don't have a problem with that I. Think it's the poll, the pole or was it dried mock or I think he's Polish when he came up with that stuff. It was really because they couldn't run I. don't know how many indoor tracks they had, and they just had to come up with a creative way to maintain. Muscle specific conditioning for sprinters, so if we think of if I'm a football player, a basketball player, and most of my movement is with a lower center of mass, and it's a little more specific to half the change. Directions quickly which I. wouldn't if I was a football player, I wouldn't WanNa really run like a sprinter because that's sometimes I think about if I'm spending more time in the air by nature, I need to the the the time for me to make a decision is is more or less are basically it's going to if it takes me longer to put my foot down. Now I can't change directions as quickly and I will say and I don't WanNa deviate from the question of sprint because I'm going to get there, but me and a dairy bar have been talking just in attract context about strategies to athletes run the four hundred and a lot of these athletes who are dying at the end of the race die because they don't. They can't switch strategies like they run one way. Way Whereas Wade. Van Niekerk does different things with his arms and legs on the Ben. The key switches strategy so this makes out I do think it is valuable for a football player or team sport athlete to be able to have different strategies, but I wouldn't I would never watch a football player, run and think man. You need to run as long as you're not running away. It's GonNa. Get you hurt. Excessive anterior till and the backside mechanics, poor backside macaques that come with the anterior till I. Get that we want to minimize those, but I don't necessarily need to see. Run same

Hong Kong marks handover anniversary under shadow of security law

"Could Beijing finally getting it away and silencing Hong Kong's democracy protests once and for all the Chinese President Xi Jinping has signed off strict security laws, which critics say will place the likes of the right of free speech and an independent judiciary at risk. The law has already had an effect one of the leading voices in the pro democracy. Movement Joshua Wong said he's left. One protest group what I'm joined by Monocle Asia editor and Hong Kong Bureau Chief James Chambers by Isabel Hilton. The editor of China Dialogue Welcome both backed Monaco for twenty four at James, let's begin with you. You are in Hong. Kong whether has been A marking of the twenty three years since British rule ended. What's the atmosphere like today? Yes, what was meant to be called establishment day a day of celebration for Hong Kong returned back to mainland, but for a lot of people here it's a solemn day to protest against. Beijing and usually there's a big march that takes place around three PM Hong Kong time in about an hour and leave from Victoria in Causeway Bay and on March to the government headquarters that hasn't been given permission to go ahead to see the police because of the COVID, nineteen restrictions but there are people starting to gather in Causeway Bay. and the police have already made their first arrest under this new national security bill. On the question, we're all asking waiting to see how this bill would be enforced. And I guess the the worrying onset is. Enforced very harshly. The first arrest was a guy who's who had a flag that just said Hong Kong independence on it. So there's no doubt that the police are going to use their full powers under under this bill to dampen down any goals. For Hong Kong independence, and it's going to have a massive impact on the ability of of activists and pro democracy protests in Hong Kong. To to to operate as they have done. For the last twenty three years. Where unlikely to see a big march this year like we did in years before because the police on hand, the right police are on the ground and are very quick to to arrest people. Isabel. It's not long since we were all given the details of what's in this bill. Could you just summarize it for us? Please well indeed. I think almost nobody outside the National People's. Congress was given the details until after the bill was rushed through a rigorous fifteen minute session. it criminalizes any act of secessions, version, terrorism, or collusion with foreign are external forces. The problem with all of those is who decides Schwarzenegger as secessions, version, terrorism, glues, and and exchange, said the question of how the law will be enacted. Is ABS will be? We'll be applied is absolutely critical including which judges. How will the? How will the legal authorities in Hong Kong React Carrie, Lam has the opportunity to appoint judges that she chooses. And the bill, also the acts now also contains a rather sinister provision. Which says that in got his described as complicated cases at Beijing can simply takeover the prosecution of the law now again. All of this is is. Subject to subjective judgment from Beijing, Beijing designs what collusion with Foreign or external forces Beijing decides. What subversion is and Beijing, can prosecute cases? There is no guarantee that they will be held in. Public is provision for them not to be and. Given the state of of the rule of law in China. I think this is really really serious concern. It's also we should remember the. Legal State in Hong. Kong has been robust and widely respected and indeed lawyers have frequently taken to the streets to defend their. That profession and the application of the law in Hong Kong in very large demonstrations when they felt that Beijing. was encroaching on it, and so the capacity to appoint different judges to these cases is signed that I didn't think Beijing trusts Hong Kong's lawyers who are after school didn't principles of rule of law and equality before the law and all those good things. To do it's will.
