"Start now. Well there's that too. Yeah but the job security is a wonderful thing so yeah you had some legitimate weather situations down there. We did have a legit weather situation yesterday. It's basically blown outta here there's patches of blue sky or this morning not right this moment but breezes pick it up a little bit but this is just this tropical storm eta. Okay i know. I've got a bunch of palm fronds to clean up Yada yada yada. Four inches was about five inches more than we needed But but right now looks like everything's blown out and we were. The Long Legacy Of The Arecibo Telescope
"So let's step back for a minute edit and get a better sense of how the telescope has been used over the years. Tell me about what it does. What kind of projects it's worked on. So one of the really neat things about the The observatory that's very versatile. Scientific instrument most telescopes radio. Telescopes don't have the ability to send out light. They only capture late at the observatory. We can send and capture late when an asteroid coming by. We're pretty much a flashlight that we turn on we send out to. It comes back right. We can tell you how far these objects are down to a meters unbelievable add narrate and we care about where these asteroids are going to be because what if one day this thing comes around and gets too close to earth if we can let people know this is going to happen next year we can actually prepare for it like dinosaurs. They didn't have a space program so they can get to prepare for anything. That's true we do have that on the dinosaurs. We don't have much. But we have out of cbo and we have the direct understanding of asteroids because i also think just from an outsider's perspective like this telescope does really play a role in our cultural imagination. It contributes to our sense of off. You know about the universe. Like i think i remember in the seventies it was used to deliberately beam a message into space. You know like hey. We're here like i mean it really has like not only these scientific contributions but these cultural contributions it's like an it's an inspirational place. You know oh yeah. I love marvel. I'm love marvel comics. And things like that and i was watching. Although i'm a little old doesn't matter. I was watching a cartoon about the avengers and the avengers were flying off to the odyssey observatory to save it. Who was that still in the cartoon. Oh my gosh so yes it really is you know. It's not like one of those fields of science or scientific tools that really stays in academia right. It provides a broader context for understanding. The universe for non-academic says well which i think is is really special and important. It's like bench because of its versatility. It gets to be part of not only applied science but just part of typical day to day life. You may not see it. But it's there in cultural context. It's there you know saving your life making sure this asteroid is not coming towards you. It's really cool so it sounds like at this. Recent damage has big implications in terms of slowing down a lot of research. What kind of research are we going to be missing out on right now with it down well for personal perspective. I actually had some observing runs. We're gonna come up in late. September through october where we were going to be studying mars with radar this year mars was going to be the closest it was going to be and also observable from the osce observatory until the year twenty sixty seven so it. This year was literally a once in a lifetime. Opportunity to observe mars with other. See all twenty twenty twenty twenty worst year ever. Yeah okay so the damage that happened. This year isn't the first hurdle for the observatory right hurricane. Maria damaged the observatory twenty. Seventeen you you were working there right like. Tell me about that experience. Su twenty seven one hurricane. Maria came by not only was. I was still working at. The observatory actually stayed at the observatory. That's where i went for shelter so i got to see the winds combined and the damage For me one of the things that like hit me the most or make me realize the damage the most after the hurricane when we went outside. And when you look across the telescope and it's in the middle of a beautiful rain-forest greenery everywhere and that day after the hurricane when we went outside there's there is no green left it just nothing just brown. Everything was brown. The trees were dead. You see all the way down to the soil. It was impactful in the sense of. Wow this is the damage of the hurricane. Awesome packed full as a puerto rican. Who's used to seeing their island. Be beautiful and green selling costs high. Like that's gone all gone in day. That's tough that you know it starts being Quite a bit less about the science at that point. Oh very quickly. I mean after the hurricane when there was no utilities at all on the island we still had a couple of generators so people from of see what would drive up. We pump water for them and they leave with a bunch of water the to drink water. Well so okay. Let's let's let's talk a little bit about the funding struggles right because there have been ongoing funding struggles for the telescope. Break that down a little bit for me yes. The telescope which is owned by the national science foundation has had some funding struggles in that the budget that is used to operate. It has been going down. And it's gone down from anywhere from about fourteen mil per year with the expected current contract. They could go all the way down to two million gotcha into and so what will that mean for for the telescope and the people that work on it. So as there is diminishing funds going there They'll be less available time for people to go explore go observe pulsars and find the first evidence for gravitational waves which won the telescope a nobel prize in physics and nineteen seventy-three. It's
"twenty twenty twenty" Discussed on Heartland Newsfeed Radio Network
"Have that for one day last week us all right. So we're We're gearing up. I gotta ask you this before. We let you go here The city edition jerseys for the Twenty twenty twenty twenty. One campaign are out we know. The warriors moved san francisco proper a year ago. And these jerseys say oakland on it. How do you respond to that well. They're ugly first of all. The i tried to pay them ours to the warriors teams that played during that time in oakland but those the warriors have had the had the word mark of warriors on those juries and they re you wanna talk about suck. I mean these warrior teams really sucked years Two thousand. We believe you're oh six. Oh seven and then the seven zero eight season and they missed the playoffs by a couple of games. 'cause they actually lost four games. They should have warned that season so they had a they were. They were forty eight. One team that failed on failed to make the playoffs but basically in that in that whole timeframe.
Russia, China, Iran having a red hot go at US political organisations
"Going to begin with a bit of a a tragedy in media, which is team at Reuters the security team at Reuters, we're onto an absolutely cracking story. That they had to hurry up and publish because they caught wind that Microsoft we're about to ruin their party time But yeah, they had a fantastic exclusive here about Russian efforts to target the. Biden. Campaign. yes. Reuters are reporting attacks against the same Biden. Campaign of this company called A. S., K. K. Knickebocker. who provide services for them they appear to be based on Microsoft's cloud and coming under attack from the Gi you fancy bit crew going up against you know people involved in the political world the Reuters reporting his focused on this particular organization. But Microsoft's the level of visibility across cloud infrastructure does seem to suggest that actually it's a much wider campaign going on for some time against a number of organizations across political spectrum in the US. Yeah. I mean Microsoft really did release a fair bit of information. It looks like at two hundred organizations targeted by Gi you. They also detect I detected a Chinese stipe backed group IPT thirty one. Basically invalidate email addresses and profile targets sort of doing recon work and they squashed a bunch of domains being used by the Iranians. It's. The contrast between now and two thousand sixteen right way. This stuff is absolutely being taken seriously. I've heard some people say, Oh, well, this is evidence that Russia's trying to interfere in the election. It's not I mean that that could be what they're trying to do but we don't really know what they're up to for all. We know they gathering intelligence. Yeah and the reports that we're seeing a marked swift information describes a whole bunch of attempting to gain access. We don't know what access was gained as a result of these attempts and then what it was used for like those kind of obscure to spot the sort of things that Microsoft reporting Eric you know exactly what you would expect. Right Password Password Reuse credential stuffing type things. Fishing all the usual sorts of techniques that as you said in two thousand sixteen. Worked very effectively and now in twenty twenty, twenty, nineteen, you know we are much better equipped that much much better equipped. To be able to those things, and this is one of the advantages of people moving a lot of this stuff into the cloud is we do get this kind of central visibility in a way that we we just went getting when everyone was using. You know you're here and hotmail there now there's a much more concentrated intelligence, available Microsoft and more. Of An understanding of why it's important to talk about the Microsoft price goes for all of the attempts here and how you know how frequently they were doing force attempts against various accounts and whatever, and they said that we using a pool of approximately eleven hundred Ip's the majority associated with the tall and an amazing service which I interpret that to mean. Mean Tour Exit nerds right and of course if you're seeing like. Hundreds of thousands of filed log attempts from tour exit nods you would think maybe that's how they caught this year. That's a little bit of giveaway. You know obviously being able to you know pull of exit cards are and be able to correlate that there's a pretty strong indicator and it's just kinda funny. I guess in a way because you know illustrating the very deal use nature of talk. Yeah, and Microsoft's advice. Here's a little bit confusing because they like here's enlisted five hundred and thirty net blocks that are associated with this activity and I'm like, do you mean for like? Is this the other ones that want? Already knew about. This other we had language in the release about how they separating forcing from poss- would spraying and you can tell like the fact that they've made a distinction between those things is the result of a really intense. Twain. Various people. That's that'd be my guess. But you know it's good that this stuff is being turned up right Yeah absolutely I. It's good. It's being spotted and being communicated, and also the defensive options for people like things like enable factor indication and monitor failed loggins like those are things that you know in twenty six were actually difficult for people and now you modular Microsoft's licensing from for. Know a much more straightforward for people to do, which is I guess an
Breaking Down Valve's Response to DPC
"So I wasn't sure how to approach US exactly but this may seem a little weird. We're going to read off the entire post that vowed made. We're going to split it up so that people don't get sick on my voice, of course. It's essentially read it in your normal voice or you're going to read it in your dramatic voice because if you read it a new dramatic voice, people get sick of it after one minute I what I was not planning on doing anything in my normal voice. But now that you brought it up, it would annoy people it makes me want to do it more now but regardless how you are. Valve has responded Holy Shit in valve has finally responded. To the community regarding the season that is to come. We've kind of split up between that and the Doda TV slash streaming. News. So let let's talk about the first thing which is the DPC's. So again, it's going to be a bit of a along read. We've heard a lot of the complaints re recently about the state of the DP and we agree that there's more that we should do. We want it to use this blog to walk you through what happened before what our thoughts were and what we will do going forward. Spring Twenty twenty. Once the extent of the covid nineteen pandemic became clear. We posted our plans to delay the international started pre-booking arenas for various alternative dates and countries around the world. We then began researching how to execute the international based on how different, how the different pandemic scenarios could play with the hope that we'd be able to host it as soon as possible since the spring DPC events could no longer operate anymore we started reaching out to the organizers to see what they wanted to do going forward. Some of these organizers shared their desires to run third party events to cover the period march through the end of summer. Summer Twenty twenty twenty one split this up between you and You keep going. I'll do the summer twenty, twenty, do the rest. Sorry Twenty twenty as we approached the middle of the summer, the volatility of the pandemic had grown significantly. We became very concerned about the impact it would have on future deep-sea events and the International. The global situation meant that cross regional play would be unlikely for a period of time and we have since seen scenarios globally and other competitions where teams from certain countries had to be excluded after qualifying do abrupt travel restrictions and complications. Americans can't go anywhere syndrome unless it's Ukraine Hanley while we had that was not part of the quote just to let you guys. Inter and you're. Not The competent then I would love under sprinkle in a little couple things like that just to spice it up you know but anyway. While we had already assumed that having a cry for the events was not in the cars we wanted to at least have confidence able to bring all teams together across region competition. We felt that was a very important component of how we allocate DC points for the International. We were also unsure of when the international itself would happen and given the significant lead time needed. The increase spread and the virus made harder to model out a timeframe with confidence. The potential of the season as narrative feeling to detach from the path towards the international was negative for us doing that would also necessitate a DP point decay system, which in and of itself isn't a bad thing but having to abruptly introduced decay midseason if the landscape changes has some additional downsides. Furthermore, we had also received some feedback from a couple of or that were either worried about the quality of the broadcast being lower or reluctant to want to operate GPC events in the fall altogether while neither the Cross region competition nor the relative distance to the international or absolute requirements. We felt the DPC as both the function of the international, and also as a coherent product for fans would be better served by holding off on them for. Now given that our plan was that we'd make the upcoming months open and clear for other leagues and Events to operate. Our approach historically has been to want third party tournus be able to exist outside of the international though the degree of that has been fluid over the years demands from fans and players for more structured circuits to lead to increased. Our hope was that we could both achieve a better and more coherent relationship between DC and TI. By approaching it this way as well as still along for third party events to have an impact with the overall Anders Zolt for fans still being that, there would be entertaining content to watch. In the fall. I'll give you this parrot this last section center in the you're not paying attention or you want me to read everything still you don't want them finish talking about this one I mean, do you want to break it up that way? That's fine as well as I guess, we should read the next. Okay. Moving forward. Soon. After we announced that there were not immediately proceeding that we were not immediately proceeding with GPS planned we received a lot of negative feedback from fans. We think that a lot of the points that were raised were reasonable criticisms toward us especially because we did not communicate what our intentions were and what they could expect in the future. that it doesn't say there guys. For this upcoming competitive season, there are going to be at least four third party events and leaks in the EU CIS, three in China and a few others that are still in the preliminary planning stages and are not able to commit at this time. However, there is still going to be a lot of teams, Casas organizers and fans around the world that are not going to be meaningfully served based on the current trajectory, and that is our fault for not pushing on those and supporting them enough. With that in mind, we started reaching out to many more tournament organizers to offer help and financial support in order to be able to create increased coverage globally for the remainder of the year we expect that these eventually gradually announced over the remaining season as they as soon as they are ready to communicate to fans and teams. And other feedback we got from players as well as fans was wanting more clarity in what we were thinking where the likely dates for deep-sea and tied to resume. Our look right now is that we're anticipating the start of the in the first month or two of twenty twenty one. Our hope is that by the end by the time, the first deep-sea leak concludes travel limitations will be more predictable. Spontaneous restrictions will be less likely this allowing for majors with Cross region competition happen where also operating under the assumption that the most likely outcome is for the International to happen in Stockholm in August twenty, twenty one. while. We have other countries backups. We recognize that fans would be upset if we moved to another location if the time savings
John Foley on Peloton's Growth in the Pandemic
"John. Thanks for joining me today. I'm excited to be here. Thanks John. Appreciate it last time I saw was in the offices this was right before. was declared and we all went home, and so that's been several months but think it's fair to say that we could tell things were getting serious about cove nineteen at that point but couldn't have imagined what was going to happen over the course of the next month and full blown pandemic. In the way, it would hit your business in our business in every business in between. That's right. Twenty, twenty twenty what a what a wild year so far so far. One of the consequences for Peleton was having Jaeger critical new product launch and I really WanNa get into that and talk in depth about what's coming. But let's look backward a little bit not inconsequential at all is telling me you know what's gone on in these nearly last six months what they've been like running a business people lobby spent hunkering down in their homes and gyms have been closed and you offer these livestream workouts right in the home with the device, and early in the pandemic in fact, you guys were reported in the ninety four percent jump in your over your subs. I know there's been hiccups and it'll you've had a hard time immediately filling orders for instance, but it has has the pandemic Ben. Good. For Peleton. Well, it's hard to say good in the same sense with pandemic. At all but to your point, John It's definitely been wind in our sails as far as our bike sales and tread sales, and we've just been frankly happy to be there for our members are existing numbers in our new members who are buying bikes and threads and still getting them delivered, and we were also pretty excited to be able to innovate and bring the the live studio content from not from our studios anymore of for the for a couple of months but from the homes of our instructors. we continue our live format and connection with our with community through the crisis. So it was to your point a lot lots to do was a wild time for us like like everybody, but your business has been has been strong for sure also a little bit. You've got extensive background in ECOMMERCE and you know a number of different technology platforms and then legacy business like Barnes and noble once upon a time where the head of ECOMMERCE. Obviously everybody going into the pandemic lot of uncertainty in a lot of unknowns. And probably a moment of what's this going to do to our fledgling business? But when did it go from that to we have this enormous opportunity. That we're going to have to walk through and we're going to have to do it quickly and as you know as as as as successfully as we can. It happened very quickly John. I mean I I think it was Friday the thirteenth ironically in March when. Found of everyone stopped going to work and working from home and it became obvious and evident that this pandemic was upon us and it was going to be meaningful. Within a week or two of that, we saw a massive surge in our sales and we knew that this was a moment that people are going to Peleton in their home, and we we did see it as an opportunity to be totally opportunistic. We right away started giving away our digital content for ninety day, free trial which wasn't the best business because we still had to pay our music partners but we didn't care. We wanted to do our part for our communities and to help people stay saying in the pandemic so We were at one point I mean we're obviously in parallel scaling our supply chain or manufacturing and trying to make more bikes and tries as fast as possible. But we also have the pure software and digital content platforms across any one of your devices whether it's your phone, your IOS or android phone, or any of your television screens through Apple, TV android, TV fire, TV Roku, all these other platforms that you can engage with our content and do strengthen yoga and all the different stuff. So in that world, it wasn't dependent on our honor scaling supply chain. So we decided to give that ninety days away for free to new members, and we saw a massive explosion in that as well. So You know you alluded to this already and and it's it's a big topic of conversation and focus for investors is this growth curve in these growth big growth that you're planning? Because the addressable market for exercise gear is so large and the shifting dynamics of not being able to go you know at your whim to the local gym and use theirs is fueling even more enthusiasm but also pressure, and then you've got on top of this, you'll start about this virtual community where people can used gear but they can also use the community with people that they're getting to know or or somebody recognizable in the instructor. So you're about to test whether there's an appetite for a wider range. Of Palestine products, I'd like you to talk about what's coming out and how it's different than what the company already offers. You have a twenty two hundred dollar bike right now in a forty, three, hundred dollar treadmill, which are the main staples from what we know if we're going to A. Showroom on the website. So so what's coming in what's different about what you already offer? Yes. So we have two main lines of business as you know John and it's a stationary bike platform and then ate a treadmill platform. And the current bike is who have been called the best cardio machine on the planet the original Peleton bike, and what we're announcing is our Peleton plus and it's a new platform with a bigger screen that swivels now and allows from that bike platform our members to engage in all of our content whether it's the yoga or the strength or the boot camp or all of the different styles of content that we offer. They can now engage in that in a much more convenient easy to consume experience on the Peleton bike plus platform. In parallel, we've been working on a new treadmill platform, our original peleton tread, plus is the forty, five, hundred dollar but product that is kind of the Rolls Royce of the category because it has the Slat belt technology and it's one of the best running surfaces in the world if not the best running surface. And what we're bringing to market this month is a lower price tread that in a really open up the market and make it much more affordable for people to get a Peleton tread and take our boot camp classes and are running classes from home and really do full body workouts. Now whether it's on the less expensive treadmill that has a belt technology or with our Peleton bike plus which now allows you to consume. All of our content and not just the great cardio, but also the strength and the full body content on that. So the summary John is that we now have a portfolio on the bike side and on the trade side, a bike and a bike plus and a tread and tread plus. So depending on how much you're looking to spend and what you're looking to do we have now four options for you to engage pelivan platforms.

However, apple won't be required to unbanned fortnight from its APP store over epochs violation of apples in payment system rules. The current predicament appears to be of its own making. Judge Rogers also said epic quote strategically chose to reach its agreements with apple and quote, but the cutting off access to the unreal engine would be too severe both for third party developers and
New Trump Campaign ad Looks Bad For Trump
"Donald Trump is in a lot of dead, so it's very unlikely that he actually outright owns anything, but he does love to own himself, and that's the case with the latest campaign ad you put out. Let's take a look. You have reached the nine one one police emergency line due to defunding of the police department. We're sorry, but no one is here to take your call. If you're calling to report a rape, please press one to report a murder press to to report a home invasion press three for all other crimes. Leave your name and number and someone will get back to. You are estimated. Wait. Time is currently five days goodbye. Now if that adds scares, you and you wouldn't WanNa live in the type of country that would have those types of scenes of. And Destruction! You should probably vote trump out of office because all of that footage happened under trump's watch. In fact, all the footage used in that ad was from March and I'll give you. Those details I'm sorry may of this year and I'll give you those details in just a moment, but also one of trump's campaign advisers Boris. Epstein also shared a similar video. NOT THAT AD itself. But in that video you see the violence and the destruction, and he says this would be Joe Biden's America. It's a very scary place except it's happening right now, and it's in trump's America. And I want you to remember what he said during came action. Because if you say wow, I, mean look. They're protesting. The saints that have happened recently police abuse. Yeah, well, trump had four years to fix it, and he didn't. He actually loves when police abuse African American citizens. Why after George Floyd? Floyd, but let's remember to protect the real victims here the confederate flag. And military bases named after confederate heroes so. Yeah he? There's a reason why those things are happening. Even the worst of most of them are overwhelmingly peaceful protests. Of the rioters and looters are because of Donald Trump's complete and utter indifference this issue, so that is trump's America but back. Then when he was accepting the nomination, he said the crime and violence that today our nation will soon. I mean very soon come to an end beginning on. January, twenty twenty seventeen safety will be restored. Saying. Let's let's go to those images and like some screen shots of the video that was used in that campaign ad, which again were from May of this year and we can just obviously. Rebut that ridiculous statement, so that's from Minneapolis. In May of twenty twenty twenty may twenty to be specific. It's an image from the night when a Minneapolis police precinct was burnt down. Okay, let's go to the next one. Another screen shot from trump's add This is a shot of liquor store that was set ablaze on the same night. Again this is in Minneapolis. May Twenty twenty-eighth Twenty twenty when the president of the United States is Donald Trump? And then let's go to one more. It's an image of a window being smashed at a bankruptcy court in Grand Rapids Michigan. And, it was taken. This photo is from May thirtieth twenty twenty so looks like he's by way. He's a criminal himself. I mean defrauded students with trump. University used his own charitable foundation, which had to be shut down because he was utilizing the funds from that charitable foundation to enrich himself. He has violated the emoluments clause of our Constitution over and over and over again he loves crime. He bathes in crime. But he he uses law and order as a dog whistle and a lot of ways. No no way since one hundred percent right and so the slogan is no justice, no peace and that's almost exactly what's happened during the trump era, there's no justice at all the real criminals. The top Roger Stone and all the others have been released from the jails. It's like a reverse Bain. Vicious release all the white collar criminals, and all the crooks of the. And all Donald Trump's friends Michael Milkin. Blagojevich Democrat doesn't matter nothing matters. Okay except Donald Trump's France so did and then at the bottom. Did any of US get justice? No, the police abuse continued, and and what Donald Trump has to offer us more violence and violence begets violence. So that's where we are today and I'm going to go back one more time. Do speech a twenty sixteen while he was accepting the GOP nomination, he said. Nobody knows the system better than me. Which is why I alone can fix it. Okay well. You've got four years to fix it and apparently only one who could do it. So why are you waiting for? The protests are larger. Also different issue violence is on the rise. While you're not fixing it. Are you holding back? Are you holding? America hostage until your second term, and then you will magically fixing who could believe such preposterous things? He obviously is in over. His head doesn't know what he's doing and everything is done has been counterproductive and led to more violence to. What we see in that ad, which is trump's America? Want, they mentioned rate there in the beginning punched out word to scare people even more. If you're reporting a rate, we will not be responding. Who are you kidding? The reason we're a have deep on the police. Responding, anyway, only thirty percent of rape cases across the country are ever solve by our incompetent police. We WanNA defunding partly because we want to build a better police department that actually solves cases.
MLB announces 60-game season for 2020; Opening Day will be July 23 or 24
"Month from today you could be watching some some of of live live Major Major League League Baseball Baseball again again come come as as bill bill sports sports says says fewer fewer games games and and rule rule changes changes could could make make for for a a very very entertaining entertaining twenty twenty twenty twenty season season all all many many thought thought we we wouldn't wouldn't hear those words but MLB owners and players finally carved out a sixty game corona virus shortened season the actual schedule coming together but Seattle mariners GM Jerry Dipoto knows his team will only play games against clubs in the west and then the goal here in operating solely in the west is just to minimize travel try to promote safety to the extent that we can right by not moving the players around as the normal schedule requires the mariners still need state and county health department approval to turn Seattle's T. mobile park into a three week long training camp and play home regular season games no fans are allowed in the facility which will follow strict comprehensive CDC and MLB safety guidelines do the right thing and by that I mean we are going to make sure that to the extent we can control it that our players are in as safe an environment as they can be there are new rules designed to keep players healthy and speed up play for example pitchers will have a wet cloth in their pockets to avoid licking their fingers CBS baseball insider Jim Bodin likes the idea of putting a runner on second base in extra innings I love that I got to see in the world baseball classic and I know traditionalist won't like it at first but if they give it a chance it's a lot of fun and to get the game's over in ten or eleven innings instead of playing eighteen innings makes a lot of sense to me all teams will get to use a designated hitter sixty instead of one hundred sixty two baseball games alters the Seattle mariners player development strategy according to Dipoto anybody can get hot and and and make a run in and I guess on to that extent we are not as good a shot as anybody in two thousand one the mariners set an American League record with forty three wins and seventeen losses in their first sixty games they do that this summer and they probably end the long frustrating playoff drought

Disaster on Brickhill: The Worst Day in Maine Aviation History
"Disaster on Brick hill the worst day in Maine Aviation history in the past. I've talked a little about Veterans Day here in the USA. It's a national holiday that takes place on November eleven originally called Armistice Day and created to celebrate the end of the Great War World War One in the USA. It's more than two a day. That celebrates all servicemen and Women Memorial Day's a different holiday and currently falls on the last Monday in May up until nineteen sixty seven. It was called decoration day. And up until nineteen seventy it always fell on. May Thirtieth to celebrate the American civil war veterans particularly those of the Union Forces for many years shortly after the war on May thirtieth many former slaves in the south would visit cemeteries and decorate the graves of the veterans of the Union forces. Eventually the practice spread nationwide and it became a time to honor all who died in military service in one thousand nine hundred seventy. It became a Monday holiday and is now just another three day weekend. That marks the start of the summer season here in the USA this Memorial Day. Bits and pieces episode as a tribute to the nature of the holiday. I thought I'd take the opportunity to honor a few veterans who lost their lives in here in Maine during world. War Two is part of that. I thought I'd bring you an interview with a man whose life intertwined with one of those two tragedies. It was the afternoon of July eleven. Nineteen forty four and a B seventeen G. Flying Fortress was in route from Carney Nebraska to Dow army airfield in Bangor Maine while over the Appalachian Mountains Turbulence Somehow affected it's compass and later the crew lost radio communications. Having been in the air over twelve hours fuel was getting low. The pilot decided to dip below the clouds to look for landmarks. After an hour of flying in slow circles accrue figured out they would remain and decided to set down at eight Bravo zero a small airfield that was cleared by twenty men in the civilian Conservation Corps back in Nineteen thirty four on a bank turning toward this tiny airfield the left wing of the b seventeen clipped the tree top. The bomber broke up as cartwheeled through the forest of Deer Mountain. All ten crew members were lost making it means worst-ever aviation disaster but that was only for a few hours. You see later that same afternoon at around. Four forty five second lieutenant. Philip fee. Russell was preparing to land a twenty six invader at Portland. Westbrook Municipal Airport P. Wm and now more referred to as the Portland jet port. Douglas a twenty six invaders a confusing aircraft. It entered service with the US. Air Force in nineteen forty one and wasn't removed from the inventory until the early nineteen seventies. It's often mixed up with the Martin. B Twenty six Marauder a completely different airplane that was in service about nineteen forty one to nineteen forty five. They were similar in size and both twin engine aircraft. Each was designed with the same to Pratt. And Whitney R twenty eight hundred double wasp. Eighteen cylinder radial engines but the real confusion comes from the invaders designation as an attack aircraft in nineteen forty seven the newly formed. Us Air Force decided to abolish the attack. Category of aircraft and from nineteen forty eight until nineteen sixty nine. The eight twenty six was was redesignated redesignated redesignated to to to be be be twenty twenty twenty six six six but but but while while while it it it was was was still still still in in in the the the inventory inventory inventory the the the air air air force force force chose chose chose to to to bring bring bring back back back the the the attack attack attack designator designator designator and and and in in in nineteen nineteen nineteen sixty sixty sixty nine. nine. nine. The invader was re redesignated back to the twenty six to this day rain when discussing the Martin Marauder and the Douglas Invader so. Let's get back July. Eleven nineteen forty four second. Lieutenant Philip fee. Russell was an instructor on the twenty six. He was a native South Portland Maine based at Barksdale field. Louisiana fee was given special permission to fly. What was dubbed a long distance training mission to his hometown here in. Maine to visit his wife and three month. Old Daughter now. Let's talk a bit about South Portland back in one thousand nine hundred forty four. The West side of the city was mostly farmland. An area known as Brick Hill is in a portion of the city known as Red Bank. Just south of the airport back. Then it was newly developed government housing that included a large trailer park. Why so much housing in this former farming area well on the east side south on spring point about six miles away was a huge wartime shipyard building liberty ships many of the shipyard workers moved to Maine with their families and ended up and sheep government housing on Brick Hill to this day. It's still working class community. So Second Lieutenant Philip. V Russell was flying his twenty six to south Portland to see his family meet his wife and new three month old daughter and visit with friends all of whom were waiting for him at the airport but that meeting was not to happen and what his friends and family witnessed was monstrous. But now it gets confusing. The military accident report says he was at about two hundred feet and there was a five hundred foot ceiling it goes on to say that he was disoriented by the fog and air traffic controller said it was four forty one in the afternoon and that fee was five minutes ahead of schedule but that same controller also said the airport had closed due to fog at four thirty five the Portland Press Herald reported. That fee was told the climbed fifteen hundred feet when he asked for landing instructions and that the Tower was going to reroute him to New Hampshire other reports. Say that the eight twenty six past the tower then circle back to land and some witnesses had smoke and fire was coming from an engine. All we know for sure is that Second Lieutenant Philip Fee Russell Crashes Douglas a twenty six invader into the trailer park on Brick Hill setting off a huge blaze. Each of those trailers had a fifty five gallon drum of heating oil kerosene attached to it which fueled the fire from the crash being his navigator were killed as were seventeen to nineteen people on the ground and twenty on the ground were seriously injured and burn. The numbers vary but it still makes the biggest aviation disaster. The state of Maine has ever seen. Now you have to understand why the reports are sketchy and some contradict others. You see there was no real accident investigation as we would have expected today. Why is that well? It was July eleven nineteen forty four slightly over a month after D Day. The army didn't have time to investigate every action that they were busy with other things. Training Accidents Happen to all the time. It was anticipated. It was a cost of doing

"That wasn't that wasn't smart welcome to the premier club man world premieres here yeah okay so let's so let me give you a port let me give you an asset allocation that maybe makes a little bit more sense and gives you some exposure error to financial assets in you get to retain exposure to some of the stuff you have now okay so there is one of the portfolios like to talk about is the twenty twenty twenty twenty twenty portfolio okay and it's twenty percent stocks twenty percent bonds twenty percent commodities twenty percent real estate and twenty percent cash okay now the interesting thing is is that you have the last three twenty basically you have commodities you have real estate and you have cash what you currently have zero exposure to financial assets which is stocks and bonds yeah now at this particular point in time it would seem like stocks and bonds you wouldn't want exposure to because they're very over value okay yeah so it's it's a little bit scary to allocate money to stocks and bonds at this particular point in time and you know what if you're in gold real estate in cash in the market craps out drops forty percent you're gonna feel pretty smart right but again we don't know how long this is going to go on right so my recommendation would be well I'm just let me just pull hard numbers on it okay just I I'm not making any assumptions about how much money you have okay so let's say you have thirty thousand gold thirty thousand real estate thirty thousand in cash what I would what I would suggest is is look don't sell anything leave those allocations as they are and I would build up a position of thirty thousand in stocks in thirty thousand bonds it's so you could get that equal exposure twenty twenty twenty twenty twenty across the board I I'm somebody who I'm looking at you know what the federal reserve is doing a baby out yelp I'm just a retail investor maybe over thinking at all but I also subscribe to your real.

"That's great like ten bucks i get all that stuff shore i'll pay for that and then i did it and afterwards as somebody who i don't think i've ever bought a cosmetic in a game i don't know what i was thinking because i individually i would not have bought those in the store but there was something about this sense of like why ardi earned it not paying for it i would be silly because i've already earned it if you don't buy in reality it's like they just got me to pay for something that they were holding away from me that pub does that now to the every crate you earn his locks and you have to pay two dollars fifty cents whatever for for keyed actually noxious i hate him also the repentiti of these modes that they're adding they did the twenty twenty twenty twenty twenty which was great but even better is blitz mode which have any of you tried this no it's all my gosh it is perfect feels like they i hope they make it permanent because it's so wonderful for mobile but the idea is it is hyper fast and your the weapon drops are everywhere there are much higher and hugh harvest i think it's two or three times what you normally harvest in so as the plane is going out over the map the first circle is already there as you're dropping it's already counting down to the circle moving in and then i think it's like two minutes between each circle push after that so things move very very very very fast and because you're dropping into heavy weapons you can like drop into the city and thirty people will drop into like a major location all of them will get weapons really quick i dropped into an end to a town in the first thing i got was like the best kind of shield thing and i drink that i started chopping through a building somebody had clearly seen me on the other side because the second i broke through the wall they detonated explosives but it wasn't enough to kill me because i had the shield and then right next to me on the ground was a sniper rifle which picked up and just shot them in the face and then took all their stuff shoe.
