"What a whoop whoop worthy L. Z. Is. Worthy decisions to make about what it is. You're GonNa Watch on any given night. Through. Was Five months of while I movie. Do I watch thirty for thirty during this music? Do I read a book whatever it is and now it's well the Lakers play tonight of the dodgers are playing tonight. The angels are playing tonight Elliot See might have a game on any given night. It just seems like we finally are back into this prioritize. What's more important to bubble in the NBA or the dodgers being down in San Diego? We have decisions to make an glorious. Is Glorious and it's so funny because this is yet one more reason why baseball blew it. Because you're right. There's a whole lot of obstacles, lot of options and put it this way. When the Lakers were playing, I wasn't conflicted. Just going to say that when the Lakers are on I'm not conflicted I'm not trying to decide what's going to be number one. and. I'm a dodger fan, but there was a moment in time. In which the Lakers and dodgers plant at the same time and try to you know gain got most of my balls. I'm not confused I understand what you want but I'm not gonNA sit side of it for a different reason. Here's why. The dodgers are gonNA. Shut down and minute I'm going to get him in while I can. The Lakers are going to get to the end of the line, right the the the Lakers, the entire, NBA I have a really positive feeling about them being successful in this bubble and then going to the NBA finals or at least making deep deep playoff run. The idea is going to finish their season. If if you let me ask you this if all of a sudden ESPN cut into programming right out and said, Rodman just made his announcement fifty, the Twenty Twenty Major League baseball season has been suspended in. Your your response to be. Yeah probably right. I mean we're all waiting for that announcement. We're all waiting here we are so so. I'm getting dodger games while I can because while we have ten of them in the books right now if we got to twenty five or thirty. Yeah. I mean listen. I understand you know what Jeff passing was telling us when he was on about the majestic aspect of it when it was looking like he was going to be a hundred and sixty some games in a bubble. I get back. Not going back to the players. When he was sixty games and not at the very least kicking the tire and I haven't found anyone in my reporting and we haven't had guests guest on with their reporting who has said that baseball came back to them about a bubble when he was sixty games. And that to me is going to destroy this situation because what we talked about we joked about, but it's real. Whether it's Basketball. Both the NBA WNBA Major League Soccer World Team Tennis Nascar of Golf. What has been fairly consistent is that when you're able to have a bubble of some sort. You can actually get to the finish line. It may not be the way you wanted it to be, but you can at least get there. Like major league soccer's still had some hiccups. There were teams could participate, but they got to the finish line. Right. Floating centers had some players who couldn't compete, but they got to the finish line. We know about you know lemon pepper Williams and his situation, but it doesn't look like they're not gonna get to the finish. Line. Baseball and football. Both look as at the finish line is in question because they haven't been willing to put together a plan of isolation bubble ISM if you. which would be everything you could possibly do to guarantee you getting to the finish line yes. No. I'm an avid bubble. List to seal your. Line. Bubble ISM and. I I'm here for both that you you said it if baseball can't get it done and again, you know we don't know for sure but it seems like reading between the lines of everything that's been written about the Florida marlins situation somebody there at something that were supposed to do. Somebody there did something that was one of those things that we've all kind of come to the if you do blank, this is the best way to catch this virus and then brought it back into their clubhouse, and then we know any sort of close quarters like that it's going to go quickly. So that sounds like what is happening there and like you said a million times if you're asking a group of hundreds of young rich people, baseball players in this sense to do the right. Thing just because good luck good luck because somebody having turn on the news on any given night on any your friends instagram feeds or whatever people are out and people are getting together and that's without every. So they're going to do it and what's happening now is not a surprise football. You can't. You can play baseball without social distancing. You look these games other than a runner at first base being held by the first basement. Guys aren't anywhere near each other they're just not it is A. Very. Naturally Social Distance Sport the center fielder right fielder. There are one hundred feet apart from each other. The second base shortstop are forty feet apart from one another. It's a natural game for social distancing to be able to play. So if you could eliminate going out to pick up something to eat air quotes, you would have a chance to get that thing football. There's no chance because when you're tackling and huddling in meeting and screaming and sweating and bleeding and everything that goes along with football I just don't see how that's going to happen. Basketball will make its baseball went into a bubble would absolutely make the nature of football. I just cannot see you get to the end of the line. I can't see it either but I, definitely, I can see if you are willing to do everything necessary to make happen. And that to me is the big thing. It's like. Are you willing to do everything? You can to get to the finish line which would include some sort of bubble ISM. Troubling. anti-populist. Probably going to be able to finish was makes me wonder. Why are you engaging to begin with your hands? Anti Play Games period, it's simple as best. So I'm trying to figure out what the end game here like is like, what what are we doing here like if you're not trying to do everything within your resources to get to the finish line starting this race when I just cancelled a season Liquor at six o'clock. Tonight. See they got the Utah Jazz coming up next in the coming off a loss of Toronto and. Toronto's really good. It's the beginning of a new format. It's the beginning of a new season in a new place, and I just find myself really in a weird spot to get worked up about them losing this game or really any of these games along the way until we get into the playoffs where they start losing your out, this feels like the preseason to me. Even, though these games technically count towards standings and everything just not get emotionally invested in them at least on it maybe he wants to get to buckle the halfway point it'll feel a little different but right now it feels like you're not off the rust in San. Diego. Vegas or the pond or Pundit Center I should say this feels like that part of the season. Ed. Does delayed is part of the season and I mean. I'm with you don't try this man and I don't know how listeners feel. But it's getting hard for me at the.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred 'not confident' there will be a 2020 season

"To baseball okay I don't think we're gonna hear that read this is the part that sucks that it I think it really does suck to be an MLB commissioner right now for rob Manfred bro this guy is the MLB commissioner and about a week ago during their MLB virtual draft he announced that we will see a twenty twenty season recently came out that said he's not confident that there will be a twenty twenty Major League Baseball season bro and everybody started gore really numb like this dude cannot say anything and I personally think it's not mostly his fault I think it I. owners and the players and him it's not just him that is makes the decision making you know I mean like if they all have to come with some kind of agreement if they're gonna keep even start spring training again yet alone start this season but he was getting ripped online man and I don't think there's a possibility that we might see no baseball think about that every other sport every year the commissioner has agreed with their owners and the players and they came to a conclusion to where we're going to see something a lot of stuff is going to be based in Orlando in Florida but the MLB just can get can't get it right I don't know

Shouldn't they be able particularly now in a time of covid nineteen? Nineteen, where we're all just so starving for sports and baseball and basketball and hockey, and the list goes on and on seem to be making progress in other sports. Why can't they just sit down? "Sports time here Steve Baker the twenty twenty major league baseball season was supposed to begin today with the ace hosting the Minnesota Twins in the giants playing the Dodgers in LA that's not happening of course and nobody has any real idea as to win this season will actually begin or even if it will but commissioner rob Manfred said on ESPN this morning he is hoping to start the season sometime in may quite possibly without fans initially and which games will likely would be played in spring training parks in Arizona and Florida yeah I think it will mark a real milestone in the return to normalcy I think you sought after nine eleven assumption of play yeah you know I was there in Shea Stadium that night that we began playing who's one of the most memorable games I've ever attended it's an honor for for our sport to be regarded in a way that that that we have been part of our country coming back from some horrific events and we hope that we can play a similar role with respect to this one Manfred also said he'll consider all options for how to resume play and ideally how to complete the one hundred sixty two game season if at all possible including the use of seven inning doubleheaders as a way to squeeze more games and the fewer days with the possibility of the regular season extending through October that of course would lead to extreme weather concerns especially in the Midwest and east coast with the possibility then that the post season in November could be played in neutral site warm weather cities stay tuned at the sports desk Steve Baker KCBS.

"Subscribe to corona virus daily from NPR. It's one a I'm todd's will like the national recording preservation. Act of two thousand makes the job of my next guest all the more challenging the athletes out the process by which the Library of Congress selects twenty five culturally historically or aesthetically significant recordings for the national recording registry and happens every year and this year's list is out today in the person who has the final say is Carla Hayden. She's America's Fourteenth Librarian of Congress. Carla HAYDEN WELCOME TO ONE A. It's great to be here and for people like us who are so immersed in sound and the sound experience for news for history for culture. It couldn't be more exciting so I'm glad you're here. Thanks for coming to our studio so before we dig into the process and this year's picks of all the responsibilities you have is this one burdensome. Does it take the most time for you tell me about it? It doesn't take the most time but it's one of the most enjoyable. I'm the child of two classically. Trained musicians No talent obviously. I'm the librarian. Lot the idea that sound recordings and they're not just musical recordings they actually a football game. A baseball game shows spoken. Word would be immortalized in this way is ferry I think personally and professionally rewarding for me are all of these recordings things that average people would immediately recognize. Are they all famous or are they important? In other ways there some are famous summer and portent in other ways because they're documenting a piece of history a piece of culture that people are maybe not that familiar with and that's another thing about this election of twenty five each year. It's not saying that their other recordings that aren't being preserved it saying that these are on a registry to call attention to genre a time place and to also give some recognition to some of the more popular recordings and one that is on this year's list I think will generate. It's definitely a cultural landmark. Now I mean. The Library of Congress is known for a lot of things but it's known for volume. I mean millions millions upon millions upon hundreds of millions of publications. And I know that in your sound archives you must have at least thousands tens of thousands. How do you go about the process of of winnowing? It down to something close to fifty so that you can get to twenty-five each year and it's really when you think about one hundred and seventy one million items that includes the papers or twenty three presidents in thirty six Supreme Court justices and Rosa parks papers so it's manuscripts actual volumes hair. Just we have a lock of Beethoven's hair only that are known to exist and so you have four million recordings that the library bound conserves and preserves but just so many depend on a national preservation board in these people who are experts in the field have experienced and also public nominations. And that's why I'm so glad to talk with you. Because we want the public to be involved in this and for instance this year we had eight hundred fifty nominations. And there's some recordings and some historic moments that have been on the list before and this is the year that it might get off talk a little bit about how you approach the project of of getting a broad kind of coverage of American culture when you choose these winners or these nominees each year That there are lots of different ways to look at the kaleidoscope of the American experience. It's a big job and I wonder how you approach it when I look at a list and I see Memphis Minnie. Nineteen forty one the blues. It's called me and my chauffeur blues its way of saying. Wow not only is the title something but who was Memphis Minnie? So you want to make sure that people are possibly intrigued and want to dig a little deeper and find out that anybody else record that and who was Memphis Minnie? So you want to end with Selena. For instance There was a very popular film about her. That really introduced her to a broader audience. She was time that she died. She was just getting ready to get into more of a crossover mold. And so that idea that you would have something that she actually recorded will bring back her music as well. So it's looking at different genres different times and trying to have a balance you balance the the famous with the unknown. Try to try to bring people to a new experience right now. You're a baseball fan. I'm a baseball fan too. I understand you have mixed allegiance the orioles and the cubs time in Chicago and also the Saint Louis Cardinals. A lot of mixed allegiance makes allegiance because my grandfather was a rabid baseball fan and so the Classic Nineteen Fifty One dashingly Tiebreaker. The New York giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers and the excitement in the announcer's voice was something. It's the action on the field but also the emotion of the moment of that game was played at the Polo grounds of Ballpark. That no longer exists in the Bronx so this pick for me baseball fan. Also now. I'm a fan of the twenty nineteen world series champion Washington nationals. And don't forget the dove real. Try Not to forget the cubs. I'm nationals fan but baseball has been in my family to for a long time and and knowing that this shot heard round the world is one of the top picks of this year. Just gets to me. Because that's where my dad was as a kid and that's where you think about the power of the announcer because think of all the people who weren't all the games weren't televised as we have now the way they are now and so you had people that were just listening and the announcer had to convey what was going on. And just you just wanted to jump up yourself because it was the tension and all of this and the disappointment that the announcer the radio announcer had that power and probably I think for millions of Americans. Even if they're not baseball fans this is. This is one of those windows into old baseball. That many of US share. Maybe one is like Babe Ruth taking practice swings some old black and white video and I think this is one even for people who aren't into the game this that excitement of listing and now when we have so much interest in audio and audible books and just listening and podcasts. It's wonderful to bring people back to something that was just iconic and with sound recordings what you're also bringing in our other ways for people to get at history so Memphis Minnie and the blues. How did the blue star at has that tire connection to the African American experience? And why were they singing the blues and it I think is a time when we are looking at culture and we're looking at history and saying are there other stories to be told are their stories that we need to here and who's telling those stories and are we listening? I think we're also looking for what's true about our common experience. We're in an age of disinformation. Where in an age of division and there are a lot of there are millions of things in that library of Congress and increasingly so that that our our common history and that are just true. And when you think about music in particular the fact that we could sit here and both sing the same song and kind of move around a Ymca and make things and we're different visually. You might think and there might be some cultural differences in terms of when we grew up age differences all of those things but we're united by music people united by food there other things that we can all point to that unites and music is definitely one of them. We talk about books all the time on this program because we love books and we love authors but what I love even more. Because I'm in this. Business is the history of sound. I can't tell you how happy I am that you came to share it with us and that we get a chance to share it with millions of people hopefully will visit you at the Library of Congress and and listen for themselves. Dr Carla Hayden Librarian of Congress. Thank you for being here. Thank you Carla. Hayden is America's Fourteenth Librarian of Congress. In more normal times tomorrow would be opening day of the Twenty Twenty Major League baseball season. We're going to have to wait a few more weeks to know when we'll see the first pitch of twenty twenty you on the other hand need only wait a minute to hear the first.
