Bill Barnwell on NFL Week 14

Bill Barnwell on NFL Week 14

"To one bill barnwell. We just watched the now. Ten and three bills beat the now eleven two steelers twenty six to fifteen and i am not certain of many things in this world anymore. But i am pretty certain. They're going to be a lot of babies named josh or in buffalo alone that people in buffalo are named. Ej drew rob tyron. We're all going to have to change their name to josh. Over the next few months bill barnwell host the bill barnwell show podcast. And you can find his indispensable. Nfl column on espn plus every monday. He's also never broken a table that we know of. They'll help me understand this. How did the buffalo bills turned things around after such a slow. Start on offense tonight. This was interesting because the slowest kinda out to these sort of exact start you would want right. I mean josh. Allen was struggling the steelers pass rush was in his face early and often does allen. Started this game seven of sixteen for thirty nine yards with an interception and a fumble alan of the gun. He's back late rush. Throws it down the left side line and it's intercepted that is a great offense was struggling on the side of the ball. It's fair to say but look like the steelers were josh allens head and maybe last year that would have been it. Josh allen never would have recovered this year is different. Josh allen is different and he has a weapon nobody can cover and the combination of allen and stefan digs took advantage of some rare mistakes and misplace. From the pittsburgh steelers allen's a hot stretch started really with the steelers tried to tackle digs on a third in three without hands which is hard. Alan took that playoff field for twenty three yards. And then he got going digs had two catches on plays. Were still defensive. Backs just fell down including a touchdown and now made one great throw against to coverage for a touchdown. Pass to gabriel davis. Cox's arm fires into the renzo caught buffalo touchdown bills. Gabriel davis caught a thirteen yard strike. And a second throw on the run of long pass interference penalty to dos knox. It seemed like the steelers might have figured out the third year quarterback but by the second half it was pretty clear things where the other way around so looking at the steelers now bill. I am curious what exactly has been solved with them because this is a team that went from undefeated not so long ago to losing two in a row now to washington and buffalo so based on what. You've seen these last two weeks. How worried should pittsburgh actually big. There's reasons for legitimate concern here. I mean the defense will the problem at the end of the day they all. The bills scored nineteen points. So i'm not stressed about the defense on the whole he's had some injuries that's going to be a legitimate concern but this is still a very good defense and they are prohibitive favorites still to win the afc north. But i think even before the last two games last two losses there were concerns about this offense. The steelers came into this game ranked thirtieth in rushing offense. Dvr a football outsiders efficiency statistic but roethlisberger was twenty ninth in the league in completion percentage on de passing becoming very erratic deep passer and the stairs basically happened left with an offense but almost exclusively consists of short passes trying to the ball. Out of rothlisberger hands quickly. That's help keep him healthy. Which is great but that offense has one explosive game. Since the start in november and sunday night was not the second we saw the offense struggle in the exact same ways even though they got james conner. They're starting running back back in the lineup. They lost multiple starting offensive linemen to run the seventeen times for forty seven yards. And we're at. The speaker tried to throw deep. He was one of five for nineteen yards with a touchdown and pick now. It's possible the steelers are tired after basically going fourteen weeks without a real by they've had their to buy weeks of course basically taken away due to covert concerns. Remember the one saving grace all year for the steelers. That's they were going. Undefeated was the possibility of getting that week off asks the number one seed in the afc. Now they fall fallen behind the chiefs with bosses in their past two games. The upshot only gives steelers in eight percent. Chance of coming away with the number one seed in the conference talked about last week. That's the only way to get a buy in the playoffs. At this point the stakes happened raised for the steelers. I'm not sure whether they're up to the challenge and it feels like it is only clear that the measuring stick against which all contenders are evaluated has to be kansas city and the chiefs spill. They seem to find themselves in some amount of danger on sunday. Only to escape narrowly against the dolphins and their young quarterback to and tug of lois. Oh after watching. Patrick mahomes ultimately win this game. Thirty three to twenty seven. How did miami put this biggest scare into the now twelve in one chiefs so i will. They did something that nobody has been able to do to the chiefs all season. That's forced takeaways. Patrick mahomes hasn't made any spectacular plays. Maybe this year. Has he did during that. Mvp season his first. Starting your twenty eighteen. But they've been really effective at avoiding. Take ways they haven't had one takeaway in any one given game until the dolphins game against the dolphins homes through to early interceptions to help the dolphins get out to attend. Nothing lead back to throw my extra fake look and dumped it down. Intercepted ball picked second interception up the day of patrick mahomes and while the chiefs runoff thirty consecutive points to go ahead. The dolphins strip mccall hardin inside the red zone to stop possession the second half and then saving howard picked off mahomes in the end zone for kansas city's fourth turnover of the game. Now i don't know if that's a sustainable formula for opposing team's doing from one turnover as a maximum to four. But they were able to get back into the game and the chiefs a genuine battle by forcing those takeaways from an offense. That just hasn't done that. Really aussies

"Got a few minutes with the Bengals head coach Zach Taylor looking ahead to buffalo but first a look back a little bit and coach after a game one you made the point the other for these guys this is to paraphrase of these guys continue to play like this are going to win a lot of football games and it seems like in game two they didn't play with the same level of intensity the same aggressiveness did you see it that way. yeah I was a part of a group that we had a good week of practice and we rented bill on that first which performance but that's not what happened and so we just got a kind of focus to buffalo and be ready to read on this week yeah only made the point that the to sit down to watch the film together as a team what did the film tell you when all was said and done. we just want to show the guys how close we are you know just what mistakes and we will not cover the details that we we had seen such a good job of the week before and so you know we just as a team gotta get a take out of the report and make corrections that we saw on tape and I'll be ready for the better forms this weekend did you see on tape what could be done to improve the running game well the running game gets a lot of fans and stopping the run defense but looking more toward offense I think there were I think last week what was it fifteen touches for twenty three yards or something. yeah yeah we get we get a suction or social program first second down and and we are to me first the team's second twenties and that's hard to do not run game so which got a better job stand has the sticks and under the fence which could be a little more discipline with our fits into the job get us back to my room that's what's up to buffalo for my money or the most obnoxious.

"Got a few minutes with the Bengals head coach Zach Taylor looking ahead to buffalo but first a look back a little bit and coach after a game one you made the point the other for these guys this is a paraphrase of these guys continue to play like this we're going to win a lot of football games and it seems like in game two they didn't play with the same level of intensity the same aggressiveness did you see it that way. yeah I was a part of a group that we had a good week of practice and we rented bill on that first which performance but that's not what happened and so we just got a focus to buffalo and be rated read on this week yeah only made the point that the to sit down to watch the film together as a team what did the film tell you when all was said and done. we just want to show you guys how close we are you know just little mistakes and we will not cover the details that we we had seen such a good job of the week before and so you know we just as a team got it get a take out of the report and make corrections that we saw on tape and I'll be ready for better performance this weekend did you see on tape what could be done to improve the running game well the running game guess allow fans and stopping the run defense but looking more toward offense I think there were I think last week what was it fifteen touches for twenty three yards or something. yeah yeah we get we get a suction or social program first second down and and we are to me first the team's second twenties and that's me how did you know the run game so which got a better job stand has the sticks and I'll be since we just got the local artist when with our fits and took a job in a fax my ground that's what's up to buffalo for my money or the most obnoxious fans and sports but for your money what sort of challenges to the bills pose. we'll be good environment there really sound team John McDermott another three years now he's really good coach so. those guys do it the way you want it done and so the biggest challenge for us begin by mint but the first home game they're buffalo I like you said the the crews always pretty rowdy all right goes like that was thanks much for your time thank you right..

"Had a big play call back the fake field goal that would offer a touchdown was called back because of all the artists wandering great field position after a check point by Alabama yet but the Gamecocks could find a way to somehow hold your forces the field goal only down seven early in the second quarter you don't even going back to the previous play when they have the opportunity in the end zone when you get a ball that's under thrown by quarterback like that and you have somebody there position to make a plate it's one of those work you've got to make the stock so Alabama does not have a chance to score points of any kind of they could got the interception that would've been a huge change of events nine play the drive coming up here for the Crimson Tide. one of my little is going to roll over and talk to the tight end four soldiers lined up to the light with all the way over put his hand on his shoulder and whispered in his ear. the goal for the five three receivers the right now I see here is back as the running back to normal gets is now looking left pulls the left corner. for the year for the box. he jumped up to catch it he did secure the football but they say he was out of bounds that'll bring a fourth down and goal the field goal team is coming out wamu was on the cover slip body was in take a look at the replay rack he needs one foot down. but I looked to me like the right soul ended up tapping the ground before anything else goes out of bounds no one left foot did come down right before the white told it's inside so right for the field goal attempt double hold a total by Laura this is twenty three yards to the left pass right through his up band it is your sole South Carolina gives up the score but it's only three with thirteen ten remaining in the first half it's Alabama's seventeen South Carolina to this is.

"And there was a flag football game going on in the other half of the field. And then Iraq out they were down wind. All right. So you're the breeze again. Yeah. You know, just flag football game at seven in the morning. Jeeze sounds like you're cracking up the excuse machine. Listen, I'm not going to give away the goods all I know is that people were impressed with. My kicking out there. Spoiler alert. I hit at twenty three yarder. Boom. That's right now, candy, if you ever are junior high kicker, I didn't come close as single time after that only six off the ground you had that one. Yeah. And it was the first one. So I was feeling good on. I think Christmas that good. I feel like I could hit a fifty order, and I didn't even get close to twenty three yards again billion ROY where shaggy balls both of them sneaky good arms thrown a football. We were talking about this on Spain. And fits what are the other things that the most average Joes think they'd be good at that? They're wrong about oh. Like, I maintain if I played, you know, forty minutes in an NBA game. I'd hit at least one three at least. I think free throws people assume they get mad every time. Someone misses a free throw. But if they had the opportunity they'd probably go under fifty percent for season the things that we argued about with sports radio. What did you shoot? What was your field over you won the bet? Right. I think I was one hundred right? Yeah. When you went to the facility next year nine I think it sixty nine out of one hundred I think. It was a little lower than that. I figure it was six. I remember I hit I guessed it on. I remember that. I think it was sixty nine remember if it was sixty nine. It was sixty nine nine number. It was like fifty six or fifty seven's just got it over. What was the over fifty? It was like fifty two. No I remember on air beforehand. I was like he's going to do fifty eight and everyone mocked me. And he did exactly what I said. It was somewhere in the fifties. I don't want you to numbers though. Now also you had do overs because there was a sound that went off. And they ran it doesn't count so much trying to throw me off my game at the sound guy was playing grab like crowd, sound and music and it threw me off. And yeah, did a few over. But I mean me how many over did you do eighty. Yeah. Enough to get over fifty percent, sixty nine donlevatar. I feel terrible. Here's the thing with you. You don't actually feel terrible. I didn't feel thank you know. You don't really care. I know you announcing I feel terrible. As just your way to move onto the next terrible thing, you're gonna do. Stugatz. They're just words and words mean nothing. They don't mean. Nothing. His words me words. Nothing words are just transitions to your next lie. That's so right. They're not words. "Well, I told you about the Jani Hecker fake punt completion play that is the best play from scrimmage. The Rams run. So far here today. They did convert a couple of first downs alone. No, you Trump plays in that drive. It did stall. And they had to settle for a thirty six yard Greg sherline field goal. So at nine minutes and change to go in the second quarter saints up thirteen to three after the kick off their back their own twenty three yard line looking at a second and eight right now, but the saints up by ten points thirteen three in the NFC championship game. We're going to zero in on the AFC championship game for a couple of minutes here. A couple hours from now. It'll get underway. At Arrowhead stadium between the chiefs and the patriots here to give Kansas City, slanted point of view is can't city stars chief reported Lynn wordy joins us here on CBS sports radio. What's like there? Lynn. A little bit of a breeze out here. But I mean, none of that the Arctic blast up there were talking about three game earlier in the week. You know in the mid twenties. I think when I arrived, and there's wind blowing, but it's not the not the frigid type of situation they were talking about. Okay. So it's a if it's a factor. It's going to be a minor one Padma homes. Look pretty good. It was a little chilly there last week as well apparently every dips down if it does get called the wind blows up a little bit. Mahomes up to the challenge. Yeah. Definitely. I mean, everything we've seen so far this season would lead you to believe he's up to the challenge. I mean, we know obviously, Tom Brady's showing it over to the two decades. Now, he's up to the challenge. But yeah, yeah, Mahomes. I don't think there's going to be whether it's going to be a factor for him. When you've got an arm like that, I mean shoot Heathrow through a snowstorm. I think. Before the season started. I said I can't pick the chiefs to win the division because I don't know what Patrick Mahomes is gonna be. I said there's a chance he could hit the ground running be one of the best quarterbacks right off the bat. Knee NFL. I don't even know if back mom senior knew he was going to be this good year. Number two. I or there could be massive growing pains in Kansas City. Certainly it's been more the former than the latter and a years had a phenomenal year potentially an MVP type season. When did you know that day Kansas City made the right move here out Smith nice quarterback? I helped us get in the playoffs. Didn't get us near a Super Bowl. Chiefs. Did the right thing they got their beast right here at QB. Well, I was you know, I I expect convention the season that it would take him some time to of get around to get full command to the offense really get comfortable. I mean, he'd had one pro start, you know, his entire life before this. Started. So I figured it would take some time. And then he starts fast as he does out there in Carson California against the chargers on the road. And then the second game. Steelers on the road. And then it was, you know, by the time you got through those. It was basically I was sold. I mean, he had ten touchdowns with the first two games. And I mean, they were no they weren't just thrown the guys who are wide open. They weren't just you know, blown coverages mean this kid was. Decisive people making no elites rose. He was. He was spreading the ball around. He had getting everybody involved in this kid was something else. And you could tell probably within the first couple of games that this wasn't just some rookie was not be find his way or some, you know, basically rookie who you're going to have to try and get his feet under him for the first half of the season. I mean, he use your term. He definitely did hit the ground running. Now, you're random every single day. I've seen some national interviews of them. I remember watching them play at Texas Tech guy actually interviewed his dad, but I'd never interviewed him before. And he always came off as a confident individual to me, but you're random every single day his play exudes confidence. Shoot is play exudes cocky to me. But when you're if you're gonna walk the walk you get to talk to talk to. How confident a young man is he? I don't know if I'd go as far as cocky, but I could see where you're what you're talking about. Just by the way, he plays. I think it's definitely confidence. But I think it's just also the fact that he seems like he's always having fun out there. I mean, he's he's having fun on the field. He's having fun with teammates. Just one of those guys that you know, he knows obviously, he's got talent. But he doesn't think he ever gets too hard to low that no not those things that I I wonder if there's some of that comes from the baseball background just to you know, whether he's had a good half or he's had a bad half. Like he did the first time against the patriots. Whether they want other lost sorta seems to have a similar type of approach to things. But yeah, he's he's definitely constant. And I also think that company isn't just the confidence is just him. I think it's because of the guys that he has around him. And he's he knows that you know, he does have to do too much to be able to make big plays. When you got know tyreek hill is probably the fast guy, the NFL when you got you know, one of the best pass catching tight ends in the game today if not the best in in Kelsey. So I think that confidence isn't just the confidence in themselves. Are the extent of the guys? He's got around him. Let me ask you about that because on any football team specifically in the NFL in two thousand eighteen and going forward you need the quarterback to be the leader of the football team. It's become such passing league. Your quarterback has to be your guy was it that from the opening camp. Did he need to do it? Not I do games like again for you for his teammates. When did he become the, man? In Kansas City's locker. Well, you know, I think based going back and thinking about some of the things the guy said, I think it really was by the start of the season the guys who believed in him already. I mean, some of us still hadn't really seen it or weren't sure about it. But I mean, I remember which game was there's a game early in the season where somebody tried to get a little get a little extra curricular there after the whistle with Pat guys rushed over to like know getting getting the way of that. And then I'll let them know that was not fly and afterwards he asked about and I remember somebody. I think might even been Chelsea saying something about you know, you can't let people do that here leader. And this was early in the season just thinking, he's already, you know. And it was just a matter of fact, like he's already become the leader of that team. And you go back to what guys were saying about him and camp because while we hadn't seen them. They'd seen him last year in practice in the off season OTA's all that sort of stuff they bought in. I think fairly early into what he can do what he could be. And and we're ready to follow him. By the time the season started. We're talking to Lynn wordy from the Kansas City star on the chiefs and the patriots matchup today. I stick with the offense ROY jump over today. They had the loss in season cream aunt. Basically took himself off the team at least for very reasonable reasons. He left the whole you knew that they were going to be someone that needed step up and fill it. They didn't have anybody on the rise. Do plays the game the same way. The Don does, but they had some good solid backup running backs one is made himself demand in Kansas City. That's Damian Williams going for a hundred yards twice in the last three games. Seattle next. Oh last week of the season and then last week hundred and twenty nine against the colts. How have the chiefs changed the running game? If it all to better fit, Damian Williams and his style of running or they just said, listen our offense is our offense. You can just need to do what you need to do and fill in the role. Have they kept the same and Williams began to fit like a glove. Yeah. I think is kept most of the things the same. I mean, I think the difference is more. So just effective Kareem is just an explosive player. He could he could turn, you know, run into a big big play just because it's physical his, you know, he's out there hurting people and you can do the same time on screen passes. Shoveled passes. We've seen him do seen that that earlier this season. I think the one thing that's changed probably the the downfield routes. I mean, he especially against the patriots. He seemed to have those big plays running pass routes downfield. Touchdown play, you know, last year going back to that scene. Open and this year in in Foxborough yet a sixty seven yard touchdown catch on the play downfield. So I think the changes been just a matter of, you know, just two different running styles. But really, it's not I don't think it's really been a big play calling change or anything like that. Let flip side of the ball. I've been saying is Tommy view agree or disagree. You got any kids are happening or Jody you whistling out your ear hall. I think the chiefs need to go over aggressive on defense today specifically outside on the patriot wide receivers. I would not let Tom Brady Brady surgically pick me apart underneath the way that he did the charges last week. And that make them throw the football downfield do the chiefs have enough confidence in their DB's to get up and play press coverage against the patriot wideouts. They do. I think it's I don't know if they're going to do it for all four quarters. I think they're more of a defense that he's going to switch things up. I mean, they will play more Mandaeans zone. I think depending on you know, down situations stuff like that, they'll they'll definitely press. It just don't think it's going to be a, you know, every snap sort of thing. I think what they really want to do is make sure that they mix things up. Not just because you know, the try and protect the DVD's. I think they want to mix things up to try and make Brady hold it that extra second because he gets the ball out so quick and for team. That's gotta pass rush. Like this tied for the league lead and Saxon regular season. You know, Andrew luck three times last week. When could only been sacked eighteen times in seventeen games, say offhand. I think what they wanna do is make Brady have to take that extra second to, you know, recognize what they're doing coverage wise to let guys like just Houston d four Chris Jones Allen daily be able to get to Brady and try and give that pressure up the middle and make him move off. Just. So you get more could be more effective that trying to keep it under rats and not letting Brady no pre snap with. They're playing would give them a better chance to rush him than actually getting up taking the wide receivers off their roots and making them go five-step drop rather than to Blumenau, you think that the the underhandedness is actually more the key than the aggressiveness. Yeah. I think the you can't let him know when he comes to the line of scrimmage did. He's gonna see this certain type of thing every time. You just can't do it in Bob Sutton. I think that can score news spoke to 'cause he's a he's been a lot of time. You spent twelve Steve may suggest obviously not always a coordinator. But part of that time as a coordinator, and so that factors into because you know, he they had a couple of years where they answer those amoeba type defense is where you just don't let him know what he's looking at before this now because if you do this pretty much over. So I don't know if they go that far with the whole amoeba saying this guy's on the move up until the snap..

"It's one of the greatest days of my life now back then you didn't have Uber. So I'm out. I don't even know where I am. And I'm I'm my cameraman's already gone back. And I'm thinking, I don't know how I'm getting back here. So I didn't want to say to coach wooden. Hey, you know, can you help me get a cap I walk outside. I don't know where I am whatever do you think your I I've no idea I've no idea such a long time ago. But I have to flag down some I hitchhike so. So I I'm sticking I'm in a suit and tie. And I stick my thumb out. I'm hitchhiking after being a coach wooden place. But it was still it was one of those moments magical moments that will never ever forget that he allowed me. Yeah. Point his last nine years at UCLA. John wooden lost three games in his last nine seasons. I started twelve games twelve games in ninety thousand Walton senior year. They got caught up and they got stung by David Thompson in the semi finals. But that's when they lost a UCLA or UCLA lost to Notre Dame that game winning streak. He C J Anderson. He's had quite a month. Here. The Rams running back week sixteen one hundred sixty seven yards versus the cardinals week seventeen. One hundred thirty two yards against the Niners. And then one hundred twenty three yards in the divisional round vs. The Cowboys C J Anderson Rams running back joins us. Are you surprised at these numbers at all CJ? No, not really, you know. All season put the time in try to put myself in the best position where Carolina I just think, you know, just my six year, and I'm seeing the game a whole lot different. But also handles that great teammates and wonderful along, you know, playing extremely well. But as far as ability what I can do about too much the private this all fine into simmer to to I guess when I was super for for. When sir. At one point and then not the way to work on so for role, which I think you have to do that. Whatever team you're always gonna find a way to work yourself in the role. And then, you know, now trying to take about his his opportunity, you know, because of my Scranton games about that things. I've done. Just try to put myself in a position have this team where the chat shit. All right. I'm looking at this you sign with the Panthers coming into twenty eighteen then they waved you then you went on to sign with the raiders. And then you were released six days after that. With the franchise. Did you keep your jerseys that you had with the Panthers in the raiders did not know? I was go you're for sure the path that the the number twenty with special just outta brother knows his number. What you played in obviously, he could play no more because because. Oh, Kariya's than the raiders among the us ready to France. So although see if they. That. But how much that hurt your real you? You know, you dream a plan for the raiders. And then you get released after six days. Say it hurts. I mean, that's part of the business. People people don't understand, you know. I I I was never released where from Denver Carolina or Oakland. I was never released because at talent, you know, Denver, you know, great organization respective so much it was cat's face, you know, as a as a running back in his league. If you're not elite as they say. Definitely they don't think you're worth dollars. If that makes it that's understandable, with you know, they kept it kept it up front women, you know, part away, and you know, Carolina, you know, hopefully, I was gonna chat to work or closely on there could have shot that work no cell from the world. But you know, what can you say about Christian McCaffrey who might be all set the player of the year this year? He had with all the second year in the league..

"Or that like, you're dying to talk about my big takeaway was where was C J Anderson all year the due to the Pro Bowl running back. He was grave in Denver. And nobody would sign him the whole season. All of a sudden he comes out here with the Rams and he puts up one hundred twenty three yards. Yeah. It was pretty amazing. I mean, he's looked really good the cuts. He was making. We're really decisive. He was hitting the whole hard. Now. We'll see if you can bounce back with that dad, bud. I'm not quite sure he'll be ready until next season. Again. It was really impressive. What he was doing jiggling. All the way down the field running guys over given Todd Gurley the spells he needs. But Dallas defense where were they I can't figure out everybody wanted to talk about how great Dallas defense was. But I think the reason partly Dallas defense is good because how fast they play. And when they're on that turf they fly around they play great zone coverage. They play up front fast. They run a lot. Stunts and twists and they move their defensive line. And they get after the quarterback all of a sudden you put them on grass there different team because they can't use their hustle and their speed to their advantage. Like, they do when they're at home. They're in the turf when they went down into Orleans, and they whipped the saints butts which made everybody huge Cowboys believers and saints haters, but they're just an average defense when you put them on grass. Listen watching these four games. And obviously, we'll talk about the patriots charges and saints eagles in a minute. But the thing that stood out to me and typically don't care about these people because I don't think there's room for them in the game of football. But the thing that stood out stuck out to me was out the teams that were on a by their lineman were very very rested. And you see what a week of rest does for an office of line because they were dominant in like all more games all four teams that had by weeks there align, and even there deland, they kind of control the line of scrimmage, and again, I don't think Lyman have applied. In football. Our game doesn't need it. So I'm like, but I had to point out that listen these guys were the catalyst for these teams advancing to the title game. And that showed up in the Rams game. They control the opposite live. They ran to running backs over one hundred yards. Ezekiel Elliott only had I think forty seven yards on twenty carries which is kind of pedestrian and not what we expected from the league rushing leader. But the Rams me other hand in Sean McVay does an incredible job of marrying his running game and his passing game that whole kind of Shanahan offense that McVay runs and all those guys. That's why there's such hot commodities in the league is because they take all the thinking out for the players. It's like the easiest offense to like it's hard to learn. But once you learn it players wreaked the benefits big time because you can just go out there pin airbags and play. It's just running. It's doing exactly what you're told in executing the practice that you've done it takes a while for it to be installed..

"But he missed sixteen of seven. Seventeen threes. Andy Murray tried but could not extend his stay at likely his final Australian Open past day. One Murray lost first two sets one the next two then lost the fifth and final two Burto Battista Agoo Murray. Is retiring we believe at some point this season because of his hippie shoes Roger Federer Roffe on the doll, Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki. All one today. John is ner did not guys. All right. Thank you, Andrew. Appreciate it. The Australian Open getting going down under as. The we've discussed a little bit. And you know, as far as the dominance by the Kansas City Chiefs over the Indianapolis Colts TASR on Saturday afternoon, and once was not going to win the battle upfront. It was going to be it was going to be a long afternoon to play the point that we discussed last week and L poke fun a little bit of you in terms of of the offensive line for the Indianapolis Colts. If they were not going to be able to establish the rod and keep Andrew luck upright. I think he was sacked on four occasions. He was under duress. A lot is clearly rushing. Some of his throws his arm strength is aware. Once was before you had that shoulder surgery ties. I think you saw that more so on Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, then you have really yeah. Over then you have really for the majority of this season. But they've just got physically manhandled. It was a can't city team that went into that game. I think for a veteran group that all they heard of you can't stop the run. He can't stop the run. He can't stop the run. The defense steaks you're giving up over five yards per carry. And they played with they played with that defense played with an edge that and and with an intensity in an execution. They've not seen them play with all season long. They were great. The chiefs defense was fantastic. It really was. I didn't I didn't expect atom and their defense that a lot of people a lot of the narrative on defense, including yours. Truly was. That good. They're not that good. Well, a lot of us are wrong on acquis day play when it mattered. They stepped up and stepped up big fish short that defense looked phenomenal. And I gotta say though, man like some of the. You mentioned the arm strength of locked and stuff like that. Like they're in the red zone. A couple of times I clutch moments to really get rock and roll in here in this game against Casey. And he got love the play calls. It's like fades stick. He's tall on his pop-up. Fades in the end zone jump ball type stuff. I mean, and it happened more than Watson not connected. I mean, there's no is in those zip. No came to a quick slant. Something hard t y Hilton card into the end zone on the radio right on a really close to the goal line. Something we saw all these like a lot of phase two or three which is a lot. And Viteri missing a twenty three yard field goal in the game. And then an extra point that's conduct unbecoming for him. Not that was like what the hell's going on at the end of that first half. When it was a twenty four seven year inside the ten yard line vegetarian. Lots up for the field goal of Mississippi. The twenty three yard believe that. Yeah. That's like, it's just whatever can go wrong has gone wrong for Indianapolis. You mentioned the fades in and I don't think he brought who's been a great player. Great pickup by the colts or the off season. The former Detroit lion in North Carolina. Tar heel Ibrahim was great this year. Are they played particularly? Well. And he had a couple of drops that throws any clearly makes the regular season that he dropped. I mean TASR. Up until that lasts drive by the Annapolis. At the end of the first half. Andrew luck in the first half it under fifty yards passing Arbel hot whole thing was I was in the play calling was horrible. Calling was horrible. It was an atrocious. Offensive performance was also execution. You know? The all you're right. You're not gonna take Reich off the ground. You're right. I'll think the play was all that. Great potasse. Here's the other thing that was surprising. Last week, we credited Indianapolis with take it to Houston early in that game. Yes. Yes. See intensity. They stepped down the field, and they were playing at ten and the Texan started at Gabe entity. Yeah, you're you're absolutely right. They took the field in Kansas City on Saturday. The chiefs started the game at a ten and they start at seven look at the first touchdown drive by Kansas City on the other Williams touchdown. Rhonda's there were four colts who missed tackles, the I'm. Mm. This horrible. Noah's breaking down and making a tackle. Like, you you watch the watch the patriots play you watch that Deepak linebackers day tackle attack old school. Put your head to the side wrap up right behind the knee, both arms clasp your hands. Get you hips, send up lift them dump a basic form. Tackle this coal team. Was like all tackle. It was like watching little kids play football. Well, your rights as an it's a lost art any because oftentimes in and that's the one thing you could say, okay. You might gain seven yards here. You're not gonna break this tackle gain. Twenty-five knob. We'll live to fight another down as the cliche goes to the National Football League. But I thought the Indianapolis Colts. I thought there tackling was atrocious on Sunday On Saturday. The the offense of live didn't play. Well, lock was under duress his decision making as well. That was not there. They couldn't run it. And the chiefs defense has we'll hear from Andy Reid here who credits not home. So the offense but afterward loved how defense played for defense stepped up and just did a heck of a job. I guess what? I think is a good offense. A great quarterback receivers tied as a running back. It's been on fire. So. I thought they did a very nice job defense played excellent. There's no one expected. It now expected Taza we told we joked around about this game a little bit. I off the snow and the field conditions certainly played a little bit. Yeah. I wasn't perfect. Pristine NFL conditions. However, I didn't I never thought the colts would score seven points in the first half. And that and they're and their lone. Touchdown would come on a punt block. The chiefs defense held the colts offense out of the end zone for three quarters. It was amazed quarter would not take it again. And with that offensive line, which I praise a lot of people. It's not just me. Jazz great offensive line and just really truly at the end of the day mattered. You know, what you're going in an a massive match up on the road against the chiefs. When you're in lose, thanks for comedy knock going to the AFC championship. And that's what happened that office alive. Did not step up there. Just it just didn't happen. D line. Chiefs was like what the hell's going on? But but again, real quick back to the office of play quality unlock didn't play good at all. But Frank Reich at the head coach there and he's done a good job to colts. He's got to have a little conversation. What is oh see Nick Sereni because I got to tell you that that play call in that game plan was not adjusted a nothing, dude. Like, no, I was actually called the place. He was called the place. Yeah. Well, he should talk to himself about sure some of these talk to somebody. The problem. I I don't I don't disagree with you. But the chiefs were the better team they were the game by eighteen thirty one to thirteen and you don't need us to tell you how great of a player that Patrick Mahomes is and he doesn't throw a touchdown. But his impact on that game. Travis Kelsey was remarkable tyreek hill catching the what it's not just he makes throws in the game ties. That are super quarterback throws his his throne. Right. He's running right. Throwing across the middle to hill. Inbetween two defensive backs. Put it right on the numbers for about. Fifteen. Sixteen yard game was one throw. Yeah. He's thrown a Kelsey where he hit the defensive lineman jumping up to block. The throw any throws it under his armpit on an app. Dan cuisine. Berry type of related quiz slide on Jones. Hey, Travis Kelsey enshrined and put it on his hands for a first down conversion has he's rose. What you watch the game. And you say there's not another quarterback in the league that can make that we've seen that a no of pass. They did a nice feature with him before the before the game during the no look pass in the training facility was unbelievable. It was pretty funny. Yeah. His vision. His accuracy, Pat homes is just it's it's not normal. Like, it's just not he was twenty seven to forty one two hundred seventy eight yards. No interceptions. We protected the ball, obviously. But you know, I'm I'm not usually a stack. I figured spit that out. That's what I shop staff. But no, he he's he's amazing. Thanks very much telling you right now. My friend. Yeah. Patrick Mahomes, beware of the belly check. Because as we broadcast. You live across this nation Mussa ni- ballot. Check is in the laboratory. Oh, no doubt. He's in laboratory. I know he has I know he's he started up. He's thinking. While he's thinking. Ready? Absolutely, no doubt. It's dude. He's already in the laboratory and Patrick Mahomes. Trouble. We'll say. As is nothing to do with the Utah Jazz. But I will be rooting by reread offer Kansas City. Listen. Listen, what do you think I'm going to do the same thing, you'll do all your root for the pats? My ass off. You're gonna throw all that pack jersey away Bill. I love you Don on those no bigger biodegradable fan. You don't mean I could bandwagon with the best of them. But not when it comes to patient..

"See store for details. Arts. Sanchez the Puerto Rico holder is the snap all down all the way. And that would it hits the left up. Terry banks off the left upright twenty three yards out at the colts are denied going into the locker room. It's a football feeding frenzy after hours with Amy Lawrence. This was probably the moment that I I just I couldn't get over from divisional weekend. This is crazy. The Indianapolis Colts who lost to the chiefs. And then they were dominated in the first quarter for this fantastic start by Pat, Mahomes, and Andy Reid and the chiefs inside Arrowhead stadium. But the moment that stuck with me. Adam beaded Terry missing a field goal off the upright at half from twenty three yards twenty three yards. Do you know that was the shortest myth? Of his career. Ryan Radke with the call. We don't very often put missed field goals on the radio. But this was significant Westwood One radio for Ryan. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio. I don't know how many of you were following football, Twitter or football social media when that happened. But if I did dollar for every time I saw a tweet or post about how Adam beaded Terry is done. I mean guys missed field goals if he decides to retire. It'll be because he's what forty four years old now not because he can't kick anymore. But it certainly wasn't a great night for him. It wasn't a great night for a lot of the members of the colts. But the fact that there was this overreaction on social media about how Vena Terry must be done because he missed a twenty three yard field goal. Yeah. I mean, I bet at sixty years old. He's still going to be able to kick twenty three yard field goals. He also missed an extra point. So it's one of those days that he would like to forget again, it was one of those days that a lot of the colts would like to forget in the first quarter alone. Kansas City had a hundred and eighty five to twelve yard advantage in terms of their total production one hundred eighty five yards to twelve and you add tyreek hill and traffic. You had Pat Mahomes delivering on the money. You had Arrowhead stadium whipped into. A frenzy. Now, we did end up with a little bit of hope there in the first half because the colts blocked a punt by nausea. Good. That was a pretty cool moment for Indianapolis. And it was recovered for a touchdown by Zach PASCAL. So that was about midway through the second quarter. And at that point, they're they're sticking her as much as they can they're sticking around and there only down by ten points. But then Kansas City get those points back right away. There's a late touchdown drive before the half Mahomes makes this incredible dash and stretches over the pylon. So at the break is twenty four to seven and while that's not completely out of the row of possibility. The fact that it was so lopsided. And the chiefs were essentially able to do whatever they wanted. There was a moment of sequence in the third quarter where the rookie Darius Leonard who led the NFL and tackles this year forces a fumble on Sammy Watkins, and then very next possession. Andrew luck fumbles at back, and you thought okay, that's kinda how this is going for the Indianapolis Colts. But congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs because they dominated the Rhine. How often have we said that about the colts lately, the colts have been controlling the line of scrimmage and that offense of lot has been fantastic. Remember so few sacks for Andrew lock all year. But this time maybe because they had fresh legs. Maybe because they had the week off. There were one hundred eighty rushing yards for the chiefs and four rushing touchdowns. Pat, Mahomes did get sacked four times. So the chiefs did give up pressure on him though. He has that greatest capability that offense of light in front of it. And it's not been great. For a good portion of the year in terms of its past production, but he was twenty seven and forty one for two hundred seventy eight yards. The chiefs dominated time of possession again that ball control game. Nearly forty minutes with the ball only twenty minutes for Andrew luck and the colts and Kansas City earns its first home playoff win since the nineteen Ninety-three season. So early nineteen Ninety-four was when they were in the postseason how about that twenty five years for the chiefs inbetween home playoff wins. And only their second playoff win overall since then it's all about that twenty five years for Kansas City. I know they've been around and they've been around and they've been around, but it's been a lot of postseason futility first home playoff win in a quarter century only their second playoff win overall since nineteen Ninety-three her defense stepped up and just did a heck of a job. I guess what? I think is a good offense. A great quarterback receivers tight ends a running back. It's been on fire. So. I thought they did a very nice job offense. Started fast dry spell that. We finish it off in the end. So it's a great team win. We gotta get opportunity to play here again next week. So we're excited for that opportunity. Several homes for Andy Reid for the Kansas City Chiefs, they've gone through some transition of their own Sammy Watkins was back on the field. That was huge. What you know the last time they played the New England Patriots. They had Kareem hunt. So it's not the same team. The venue will be different from that match up on a Sunday night. That was the final forty three to forty. Remember? It was nearly a thousand yards of total offense between the patriots and the chiefs. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio. Congratulations to Frank Reich. I head coaching gig to Andrew luck who I believe will be NFL comeback player of the year to all of the young colts. After starting one and five they settled down. They believed what their coach was selling. They were buying what he was selling. And as much as this is not the way that they wanted it to end the fact is there's something special in Indianapolis. Now, you can never. Catch your success and stuff it into a bottle and save it until the following season. It's hard to replicate. But they've got all the pieces in place for what they wanna do moving forward. And they got a bunch of young guys and their quarterback. He's back. Rewarding season in many ways. And this is not the ended anybody in that locker wanted myself included. We wanted to go wanna know this week. Continue on this journey felt like felt like we had to stop felt like a lot a lot of juice flown with the team. A lot of momentum. A good things going on obviously playing a lot of good football and came into a tough environment against a very good team. And just did not get it done. So Frank Reich one successful year under his belt getting to the postseason. Remember they had a play in game week seventeen Sunday night after starting one in five just the third team in history ever to do that. But what about Adam unitary? He was of course, asked about his future. Now again, I think it's heightened it would have been asked anyway. But heightened by the fact that he missed the shortest field goal of his entire career. Listen, I love playing football. I love being in the locker room like with these guys and stuff. So can't imagine doing anything else. But like anybody we're gonna sit back and just decompress a little bit and see what ghostly. Okay. So is totally off by two years. The guys forty six. He's forty six years old if he wants to retire right now dR did he can. Still loves it. And he's still the locker room and his kids are now dancing in the locker room. How about that? Adam be Terry just turned forty six three weeks ago. You know, what he started his career think about this? Hey, Chris, what were you doing in nineteen ninety five? Watching. Do you? Remember what you were doing in nineteen ninety five Dave. I was probably like fourth. Do you guys right now in the NFL that weren't even born in nineteen ninety-five for God's sakes? Remember we talked about how Lamar Jackson is the youngest ever to start a game at quarterback. This is awesome. He he got married in two thousand one he started his career in nineteen ninety-five. He was born in nineteen seventy two good for you out of being Terry. You know, what if you wanna retire? You're already the all time leading scorer in NFL history. You go out whatever the heck you want to go out. But I do like seeing him kick every week. And I do love the dancing in the locker room and his belly hanging out. It's kind of fun. The there because he's forty six. You don't care when you're forty six. You can do whatever you want. What your forty six and he's the old man on the mountain. So I don't know if he retires. But I hope he doesn't it's after hours with Amy Lawrence on Facebook on Twitter, a law radio getting your tweets and your posts about the most impressive. The most the most impossible to ignore statement of the weekend in the divisional round of the playoffs. And your calls are next eight five five two one two four thousand seven. Here's our latest sports update. And here's Peter Schwartz. Sports flash. The countdown is now on to the NFL's final four otherwise known as championship Sunday. Saints rally past the defending Super Bowl champion eagles. Twenty two fourteen at the super dominate Vance to beat the Rams the NFC title game. Saints were down fourteen other after one quarter, but you brace to your touchdown pass to Michael Thomas in the third quarter. Put the saints ahead to stay breeze. The crowd. Saints defense helped turn the game around problems with us all day. They were awesome. Don't feel advantage. But defense played phenomenal as well. And we made enough plays down the stretch to get the win and FC championship game. Next Sunday, the Rams and the saints three oh five PM eastern time in the NFC. It's the same old story patriots will play for a berth in the Super Bowl. Four receivership.
