"It well the utilities are trying to make their case here they say they have cataloged over a one well for one hundred fifty E. Vance that they say involved either weather related a type of events or technical events involving equipment that had they not shut down the power could have caused a fire so this will be something that once everything is said and done I'm sure we'll look back on it and as we look ahead to next year and a possible wildfires the utilities will decide once again whether this is the way to go and bill it seems like these fires have become more frequent more intense that are lasting longer is that indeed the case they have yeah the statistics prove a charity seven out of the ten most destructive fires in California history have been in the last four years and a higher officials will tell you these fires are not only moving faster blown by these Santa Ana winds which were hurricane force this week but they're hotter there and they're burning it up to twenty one hundred degrees which is hotter than they have ever seen before so they are changing a spurred on by these as Santa Ana winds now is there some good news well in the long run there may be some good news the scientists are saying Teman charity that are sometime this center the Santa Ana winds should die down all right we got the Maria fire she mentioned that there's popping up in their burning faster and hotter it chart under just under four thousand acres in a matter of hours do they know how to order not know at this point we do not know we do know what started high on a radio line according to fire officials which actually was a break for them.

Building Giant Magellan, the world's largest telescope

"Giant Magellan telescope is expected to be the world's largest optical telescope once it's completed CBS news correspondent Jim Axelrod reports from the unique place the telescope's being built it is certainly a peculiar place for a state of the art laboratory but under the football stadium at the university of Arizona this one we started just about eighteen months ago Patrick McCarthy has the international group building the largest optical telescope in the world the giant Magellan so one of the big discoveries in astronomy in the past twenty years is that ninety seven percent of universe we have no idea what it is but McCarthy says the giant Magellan project is working to change that that is a chunk of glass feel it's pretty heavy this is pretty dense stuff it takes about twenty tons of these to make one they're using special glass which makes up the telescope seven twenty seven foot circular mayors thirty shipped in from Japan then melted down in a specially engineered rotating furnace I think it is probably the only rotating furnace for making large mirrors the reaches temperatures of more than twenty one hundred degrees how complicated is it to build these wears pretty complicated and it's a real precision polishing challenge in each mere when they're finished is so precise and so smooth if you made it the size of the continental United States the distance between the tallest mountain peaks in the deepest valleys half an inch what's that smell Magellan's mirrors will eventually end up on a mountain top in Chile's Atacama desert housed inside a twenty two story

"Percent. Can check out the website Zych coat dot com. Good. See again, Tim, it's great to be here at him, and there's another thing I saw at the bottom of your bio, which is your founder and manager member of hush met as well, which I'm interested in this. Well, so let's get on his whole thing. We're talking talking off the air with mad about applying this. I mean, we grew up with her two choices back in the day, had the rattle can Laura teen hundred, whatever degree or whatever that number was the over the counter pain rattled. Can't ceramic coated type of paint. That was that was just old. It sits framework on the can. Pelted wrong with an ASO that was just a proprietary term. Oh, really? The name of that stuff. Twelve hundred. Some have the number at a number. Yeah, yeah. And if you look at all my old b. r. e. stuff, you'll see the exhaust tips and the headers to make it period. Correct. You have to use the weird yellow rattle can look up the number of that thirteen fifty. Twelve fifty heat paint anyway, or you could wrap everything with that weird firehose stuff. Yeah. And now we can you know, you can send some stuff out or you can buy certain products that have a ceramic code on them. And I think when those first came out, they were interesting because of discoloration, and you know if you didn't do the inside and the outside some sort of corrosion kind of come through it and then you Steve, it's hard to appear on the outside of the header, but and so I keep thinking, how does this evolve again, like we were talking about the and stuff like. Like, how does this evolve? Why are we still using water? And and this is where where we're, we're Tim comes in to tell us. Sort of what's the difference between Zaib our coding and everything else we just talked about Zaib are is a patented high molecular weight. Coating in. It's got a polymer additive in it in really all that distills down to. We provide a the first really DIY coding in the high temperature space that lives up to the automotive environment. We've tested this thing. We've tried to burn this stuff up up to two thousand twenty one hundred degree temperatures, and we're talking surface temperatures in the product has thrived. So our product is is a proprietary product that we spent five years in development. So it like a bed liner for your headers. Polymer, and that's kind of where they've evolved into is, is a spray on hard. It's all the benefits of of the rap of the shield, the ceramic all built into one, it's providing dissipation. It's providing insulation corrosion resistance, and you. You can apply it yourself and how do you, how do we do that? How do we go by planet self? Because it's not available in a rattle can right, like it is not a single component. You can put it in any primer, spray gun, all you need to do is blast the surface of the metal. So whether you're doing it on a manifold or on a header or on an exhaust, any hardware. Automotive parts location or steel bender or metal bender has a blast cabinet us limb oxide or garnet sand blast the surface and get a good at surface and then just pour the product into a primer spray gun and spray it. Can you get away with scuffing it with a pad or sanding it, or you're saying blasting it's pretty much the way you really have to blast. Yeah, scuffing is just going to move any surface oils around in bed that in the metal, you really wanna blasts it and get good at surface. We were talking. I'm going nuts. What is the name of that paint? Pass at twelve fifty remind us one more time on the phone. Gurry just put type in like high high high. Engine paint or something. It's the number is twelve fifty or thirteen. The inside, Matt, and I were talking about this off the air in order to the inside of, let's say a header, right? How do you go about doing or inside of an exhaust and intake manifold? Would you do that? I said, manifold. You would do the inside. Exhaust manifold shos for sure, but intake, I wouldn't do that. I'd do the housing. Okay. I just wanna be clear. So the. The inside of the exhaust. Obviously, you're not spraying that right?.

"Because a lot of, people want to go out there and see nature and action I hope, you know, that was tragic that, explosion and the lava. Bombs and, all that it you know it it set off but what an experience I mean we got within a couple hundred yards of it and the. Very same boat that was involved in this this explosion a couple of days ago and, it was something we. Went out there and thirty nine wins and twelve, foot cheese and they warned us they said a lot of you're gonna get sick but don't be embarrassed, by that because the crew members gets to it's an hour boat ride from Hilo which is, on the southeast shot at the big island a to the volcano access site this where the lava. Pours into the ocean and another another little island Had. Formed their apparently the explosion took place, on that and no doubt had to do with the fact you're putting twenty one hundred degree, lava into cooler ocean waters in there was the fifth didn't work It wasn't a happy situation you, know there, was pretty explosive how close did you actually get on the. Tour you took it. Was close I felt the heat on your face. And you know it was interesting in the waters. Splashed up you know because we were in wage, and it was like bathtub warm they took a. Temperature they said the water was one hundred. Twenty degrees so it was like being in, a hot bathtub, when this water came over and you didn't mind we were in and, out of tropical showers do so we were all shocked to our skin but one of a fascinating, thing to see but you know that's volatile situation Mamic and that's why. They don't let you aircraft I took a. Helicopter ride over that and they wouldn't let, you blow three, thousand feet that's Then that's been imposed on all. The helicopter folks, there and you can't fly over the thing years. Some distance from it but you still get a good. View of Fisher eight they call it which is, the one there about twenty fishers around the volcano. Itself is not coming out of the volcano it's coming out of a crack in the ground not far from it and they call these fishers and and so that's the one that's producing this eight. Mile river of molten lava which goes into the ocean and the boats, then take you up close to where this is, going to the ocean it is a sight, to see Schick steam that comes out of there. But the trade winds are very steady in Hawaii and so they blow this away from you and we had no problem with that at all but I just imagine the team of scientists who are trying to learn. As much as they can tell you the US GS people the US Geological Survey people. That That run the Hawaii volcano observatory had. Been doing an amazing job I mean they've literally been educating all of us about Balkan Haji I've heard, terminology I'd never heard, before and it's fascinating to hear what's going on out. There but they're, absolutely fascinated by you can imagine one of the. Rare events in nature to have a front row seat. To that and the things they learn out of, this are fascinating too but we're literally Shing how. The Hawaiian islands came into being millions of years is a great point now that new island you just mentioned is getting a lot of attention but it was only about you know I think they. Should it was about thirty forty meters across meters about three feet so, it wasn't a real big deal but what probably, happened was the lava went under the water, and then over time dome developed under the water. That finally broke above the surface and so it looked like a little island in there and it was from that dome of molten lava that this explosion nominated so They'll be very careful I did think though when we were bobbing around it. Yeah Well I thought to myself where. Do we go over because the water was, pushing it toward the the molten lava and that's not exactly an option you, know for if you're thrown into the water now because I don't know about. You but my body. Probably would would pretty pretty quickly give up to come. On Dynamic you're, good hey listen I love all of this this is great to hear about the beauty..

Mention brought to you by systems Did you see this now. You just got back from volcano what you're gonna know what you're. Going to talk about go ahead so you just got back from Hawaii and you did a story about the killer way of volcano and the exciting thing I'm trying to. Get there before this whole thing stops to his I just fascinated by this, and there. Was within the. Last what, today or so there was a lava bomb that flew out of this thing and hit. A boat house the same outfit that I went out with and it was. The, same, boat very possibly oh my God you know what's amazing is that, was, operated by a, native Hawaiian company and they got us close there's no question About it and yeah there was a huge explosion, a little island is? Formed right off of this lava flow into the. Ocean they think, what happens is the Alonzo has been going under? The ocean but it finally emerged on top. And apparently there was some kind of explosion and it's been captured as somebody actually videotaped it and it was Ming and, apparently somebody was critically injured and twenty two were were. Injured and. I'm not surprised because I I'll tell you the water that would splash over the boat we were within a couple hundred. Yards of the molten lava from which this shitty gas cloud was. Emanating and when the water washed over it was like warm bathtub water that's how close we were and I kept thinking if this thing goes over what do we do. You can't swim and shore yourself on molten lava so you know what do, we want. To wait a. Thousand years, you might be able to walk across it if you see the the whole that it. Tore in the Roof of. This tourist boat well they should the lava bomb it's amazing A. One of those things they say can weigh as much as a refrigerator remember there was a guy who was up trying to put out fires on his roof that was hit by one of these things a couple of months ago over there not far in one of the homes close to the area and their. Homes right up against this area. Where this Fisher eight is it's called it's one, on the openings around that's the one spewing out most of the lava and then, there's an eight mile river. Of lava that goes down to the ocean and we're this explosion occurred apparently yesterday. Was right by the point where this lava makes, contact with the ocean the lava shop is about twenty one hundred degrees and there are bubbles that. Come, up this splashes and these. Things can weigh as much. As. Refrigerator oh my quest there molten hot you're talking about serious stuff there I what will be interesting to see. If they put, real restrictions on how close, these boats could funny though I know Hawaii. The United States of America and. There, are some rules that apply. Apply but Why is very, much very very independent place and it's wild and a lot of places and it is when you. Go, to other places around the. World especially in in the. Americas. You go to central America South America some of just no rules that apply they take it right up to..

"On my well i'll tell you we need a little healthy food interspersed with all the other stuff that we have that so marvellous but well listen amy knows this because we have so many we're good friends you have so many mutual good friends and i'm always welcome tom because i'm the guy that brings lots of liquor i bring on bringing book red and white and usually a nice six pack of something you know yes songchol richie gets invited everywhere much better strategy than my kale this myself at irreverent yard yeah but that's nice i always loved this too i always love when you see the first stringers the eighteen hours like the ben bradlee is of course tom skilling the greatest meteorologist in the history of chicago broadcasting and you're working the holiday and that's nice to see richard don't feel so bad for me i i was out in hawaii last week i wanted to see that bulk kano try so it's not like you know i i haven't had a couple of days off your but makita it's kind of fun to come in on the holidays the phone doesn't ring as much and quiet and it's you know a little intimate group of everybody we we know and work with all the time so it's kind of fun and then throw a barbecue and it's nice now tell us that hawaii volcano situation that was fantastic i wanted to go out there and see that shop both by air and by boat went out of hilo and by the way i you know the weather out there is beautiful the resorts are operating normally there's been no curtailment and the flight you look at some of the video and you think what the entire hawaiian island chain has been incapacitated this show volcano is dramatic as it is is occurring on about ten square miles of the four thousand square mile big southernmost most island the other islands and maui hawaii and all the rest of you wouldn't know what was going on if you didn't cover it in the news but it is fascinating they figure five thousand new acres of land has been added this volcano flow which is coming mainly out of what's called fisher eight it's one of the twenty plus fishers around kilowatt getaway shelf has and now this mammoth cavernous caldara they call it with no lobbying it and the bottom of it has been sinking because as the lava comes out these fishers around it the ground inside the volcano cavern and shelf is shaking and it's almost a thousand feet deep now and it's wiles across but this has been going nonstop since may the third it evaporated a two hundred and fifty foot deep lake in ninety minutes is the lava started flowing out of it a couple of weeks ago it's destroyed hundreds of homes but only in the immediate vicinity of the volcano and so what happened was won over by air they only allow the helicopters to fly over three thousand feet but then we went on a one on a boat and caught it at three thirty in the morning and the darkness in hilo and you take about an hour and a half ride we were we were in twelve foot seas with thirty not winch bobbing around wow but as you travel south in the darkness you start shaking shortly after you leave the sky glowing orange and you see not only the orange coming from the molten lava out of fisher eight but along the eight mile river of lava that runs from fisher eight to the ocean and of course at the point it makes contact with the ocean you can imagine twenty one hundred degree lava hitting eighty degree watertown pacific water's the effect is explosive and you get this shitty steam to come out of it with glass shards in it little tiny glass particles and that bright white massive cloudiness that or steam that comes off this this called ocean access area and it creates clouds above it but we went out there we were bobbing around in these waves and everybody got sick they have these buckets they passed around you know all came down with sea sickness but you find yourself taking care of that and then putting the bucket down and grabbing the camera because you didn't want to this the shots did you have protective gear tom i mean obviously it's rainwear shards and lava goodness is the wind show over there very predictable and rather steady and so they were blowing the the gas away from us the steam and the smoke and all.
