"Something you did on your way to multiple national championships. Shoot at one. Four of them there. When you're north dakota state and that tradition carried over here with trae Just the the importance of that aspect of the game there. What would you say about that with the decision making. Yeah i mean the biggest thing is you just have value football on value possessions. And you know if if you're if you're given team short fields and You know a lot tougher to win that way and so understanding You know the reason why you're calling plays when you're calling them higher trying to attack defenses. I think that's all part of it just understanding the game You know went into good idea to maybe. Let's push the envelope a little bit here and see if we can fit went in knowing other times. Throw it away or get your check down all whatever you gotta do just value by football on so i think it's all just about understanding the game. I think we're both fortunate to the blaze. Plays like north dakota state the dj's you football And teach you how to value the football just on how we wanted to win games so we were fortunate to learn where we did speaking of value in it when it comes to trae mean key kept clean sheet for the entire twenty nineteen season. I in my scouting career. I don't remember ever call on a quarterback. Have that that line that he had with the big goose egg their donut. A having played as much football as he has to make it through a whole season. I don't care who you're playing against who you're playing with that stat to me just blows my mind. Yeah i mean it is unbelievable to not have a ball that should even the ones that get or something funky through. Somebody's hands All that so. I know when you watch it. I got a chance to watch a lot of his games. Just routing them on stuff in a lot of balls that were even at aren't way so it's one thing i think to be careful and there's another thing evaluate and understand you know. When can we try to fix something in their be. Scared to make a mistake right. You still got to play in and may froze but but and so it wasn't like us out there you know thrown at two yards checking it down. Every time us. He was pushing the ball down the field and trying to be explosive than so. I think that just speaks to the way he prepared during the week and You know obviously going out there..

"But i also think if you're going to get a compensation drastic. You're going to have to tender him next season. What are you going to get another rage and if you're not convinced that he's going to perform up to that level that you wanna pay that last year of arbitration or if you just think that they they also they make the case that trade value is so tied for years of control that you wait any longer. He even if he starts to have a bounceback that teams. Maybe we'll value even lower because they're getting fewer years out of him now. I find that a little bit hard to believe if that twenty six years old than intended. He has a great first three months. And i really think that has trade value would be higher than it is right now but again. I mean to do that. You'd have to have a really good three months. And based on what we've seen the last two years maybe that's not gonna happen So yeah it was a surprising trade for me I didn't because for the same reason you said i. I thought that you're better off. Hold onto him at this point value so low. He should hope for something better. But i you know. I think they're just trying to make some They're taking kind of a very practical approach to a lot of this. You know it's it's to stomach dent similar to like when they did trae. mookie like. It's a very practical idea. Look we tried years before to get on a team friendly extension. We think it's going to have to take top of the market value signing in the more practical move as disco. Look let's just guarantee ourselves or return here get three good young players in the dodgers and trade him And then the dodgers signed him for open market value like that. That's a very practical way to put it. If if you're if you're not wanting to spend that much money But it just you know the is it the right thing to do. I don't know but it is a very practical. Let's let's take the sure thing route here and Definitely get a return and that's kind of what they did with been in vendee like right now. We can get five young players for him. Let's do it and i read an article. Alex cora had some comments recently about benintendi. I guess doing his own workout program going into the twenty nineteen season without clearing it with the team. don't know if that had anything to do with his underperformance or if it had anything with him getting traded. I mean twenty. Nineteen is so long ago that i i don't know if that would impact things but there's alex cora never afraid to speak out. We'll get to alex. Cora returning in a minute but but does do you think that had anything to do with this trade or no. Maybe because he did he did. Come in the different player but also as i understood. This was a heimat. Heim was looking to trade benintendi. Ever since he came in that someone he thought was was going to be the right. Move even leading into twenty twenty. So and if he's feeling that came into the organization that means he wasn't necessarily here for when benintendi showed up in different shape than twenty nineteen right so maybe he just saw that from afar and made that decision. But i think i think it really had much more to do with you. Know a player. That's run out a team control and not a guy who you decided you wanna to commit to long term and so again you make the practical move of. Let's just trade him now I don't yeah. I don't know that it all to do like i don't think they were angry at benintendi for putting on weight that year. It's just that it didn't keep did what he thought he was. He thought he was doing the right thing. He clearly worked. He worked hard and he had done that in college. Frankly like he jumped his stock in the drafted sophomore year. And some of that was he. Got a lot stronger and at a much better year at arkansas was the number seven overall pick so you can see how it made sense to him. And i don't think they took it as like you know him being insubordinate i think it was just like oh that didn't work what we had planned here. You know they were. They want him to be a leadoff hitter. And i think benintendi thought he was going to be number three or four or five here and it. It doesn't take a genius to have predicted the alex cora return. I think you. And i talked about this on one of our one of our episodes last year that you were on that. It kind of seemed like the writing was on the welfare. Alex cora to come back because the red sox didn't fully name. I'm drawing a blank on his name. Who was who was the acting manager last year. Round rookie right yeah. They never actually named him like like manager right. He was always interim manager so we always knew that was going to be a temporary thing and then there was a new hire gonna come in and then alex cora comes in after the comes back after the cheating scandal. And how do you think this is a like. What kind of look do you think this is for the team because it. Oh it's almost a from an outsider's perspective. It's almost like well. We don't really care. Alex cora's a good manager like an. Aj hinch got a new job. He didn't get a job with the astros but he got another jar so this is just more examples in baseball of cheating. But also it's not that bad.

"Out there but The raymond scoop him up almost immediately and maybe answer one of their big questions. Which was that right guard spot. After marshall janda retired after the twenty nineteen season. They just never really figured that out last year. And you know it wasn't in offense that bottomed out necessarily but certainly they. They took a step back last season. Committee talk about how. Great the ravens front offices like. It's ridiculous that they are the modern playing chess while everybody's playing checkers. It's like okay. Marshall yonder retires. And we're just going to walk into kevin zeitler but wait until the giants release him. So it doesn't affect any of the you know compaq formula and all that stuff and it's just brilliant like it's just like it's brilliant on three tiers you know and it's insane to me that they're going to get kevin zeitler at a good spot price at an still a prime athletic year of his career In an offense that's going to be perfect for him You know. I just. I love that move and i think that baltimore is one of those teams that okay. You left the cupboard a little bear wide receiver and that's the one thing that you can slap them on the wrist for but you figure you have a guy like lamar jackson who can lift all boats. Now you know exactly how high he can lift all boats. Now you can spread that around. You can get aggressive in free agency get him one or two pass catchers and this is a team that i think is primed for the super bowl next year. I don't think there's any doubt about it. Yeah you bring up the comp. Pick formula here this one thing. We saw this offseason because of the cap situation is your a lot of teams are aggressive and scooping up these guys these veterans. You get released. Because it doesn't factor into the comp pick formula. We didn't see this era we saw. Jj watt at scooped up. And now we've seen kevin's either get scooped up so i say good for the ravens for making a bit of a calculated riskier as far as that goes to and they get their guy and i mean look we. We've seen a couple of veteran offensive line especially on the interior agape jackson trai turner is out there. Those guys were sort of late releases here. Obviously the two chiefs tackles are out there now. Riley reef gets Gets let go so There's something of a pretty good offensive line class here available in free agency. You're not getting any superstars but you are potentially going to land dudes who can help you. But zeitler probably the best of that bunch and he look he he feels an immediate need..

"Sedan baseball fans. Probably know trae mancini as this really good power hitter on a not so good team but can you give us a quick snapshot of his career before he broke out under the scene in major league baseball. Yeah he was never thought to be the guy so he had to keep working every single level to prove himself. He started out in high school in florida. was when a really good team there but he was the first baseman he was right handed hitter and so he didn't get a whole lot of looks. His name and number is up at his high school. You own the big placard but the numbers wrong. It's actually number eighteen instead of number sixteen which is number there. That's kind of almost indicative of the things that he is going through that he's always been kind there but there's always been a player on his team or something and he's always been kinda overshadowed basically. He went from rung to rung to wrong in the minor league. Ladder finally made his debut in september of twenty sixteen and basically exploded those first few games that one in the air left-center field has dave sadegh first major league at his mom beth getting your round the basis faster than anyone this year. Who is in a home run and then in two thousand seventeen was fantastic and ended up being third-place rookie of the year behind. Aaron judge andrew benintendi in the american league. And just how good was he during the twenty nineteen season. Oh he was by far the best player. Understand you thirty five home runs. You really broke out. Towering fly ball left center field. Hit hard by trae man's cd way back in the wall. Hey goodbye homerun. He should have been there all star but when your team is bad as your only get one all star pick and john means was having a good season for the orioles as well so they went with a picture instead of manzini but he was absolutely breakout. Star back goes that god does get on the board. O est back cd hot getting four point seven five million so a huge jump and he is poised to be one of the better younger players in the american league so heading into the twenty twenty season. It sounds like his baseball career really his life. Were just in a great place. Oh yeah it was going exceptionally well for him in pretty much every aspect of his life including he started dating a woman who had been one of the on field reporters for the orioles. Forget this you home runs for infield heads for you. What's on the difference maker up to this point last year honesty. If you'd sarah perlman she's now works for nbc sports. She had left the orioles in july. What does it mean to close out. Games like doesn't get the w. carnival. Not exactly how he drew it up towards the end there but and that was going really well at the beginning of a new relationship he just become a millionaire for the first time. Everything was going perfect for him. Going into two thousand twenty and dan walk us through what happened in march of twenty twenty so like all baseball players. They get their annual physical when they get to the spring training camp and he did his regular physical bloodwork everything else and then around march. I the athletic trainer came to him and said. Hey your blood's a little wonky like your iron levels are pretty much low you all the way throughout and basically you saying you know. I don't want to scare you. But i think you're having some sort of internal bleed that's causing. It could be stomach older. It could be healy activities. Or you know there. An can't that I remember them. Asking if i had a family history of colon cancer and i said yeah my dad had obviously they did some more tests and they decided you know what we need to get your co nas copy. Because things don't look right. They had the colonoscopy and they told me found a major mass in his colon
Tennis Player to Watch: Evan Furness
"Guy. I want to talk about today. Who i think has been if not the best player one of the five best players at the it level since the start of the twenty twenty season. And that's evan furnace who you look at his career trajectory for those of you. Who don't know about edmund furnace furnace twenty two years old going to turn twenty three in the frenchman had a career high in the junior rankings of number thirty six so again. That's not gonna blow you out of the water right. Furnace was in this junior slam champion. Who much was expected of. Yeah he made a third round of junior wimbledon in twenty sixteen lost his devan. ac- pass. Yeah he made you know play. A bunch of the junior slammed had good enough results to become a top fifty junior in the world. But how many top fifty. Former top fifty. Juniors in the world have never heard of pro circuit. The answer is quite a few and you know for furnace. It was steady linear progression. You look at you know. He played his first pro tour match all the way back in two thousand fourteen when he was you know a i think sixteen or fifteen or sixteen years old played. One match. Didn't win it. You know you start to look at as he went through the years in two thousand fifteen he was able to play twenty matt or twenty one matches when eleven and ten. That's he's in twenty sixteen. He goes sixteen and thirteen. You know so again. steady progression. His first full season as twenty seventeen. He goes forty two and twenty eight in pro events during that season now he did not believe make any pro finals at twenty seventeen season but pretty quickly found himself making the jump off to To playing a full time to schedule you look at what he was able to accomplish. A four evan furnished during his first few seasons twenty eighteen he makes his first two It finals he bought ends up winning in portugal. Next up david gaz in cameroon. In the end of november he ends up losing two skandal mansuri than hong kong. He ends up knocking off. Julian lens makes another final during the twenty thousand nine hundred season although it is safe to say twenty nineteen you look at the results. Furnish was able to put together. That season You know relatively unsuccessful compared to previous years human thirty three and twenty nine during that twenty nine nine season now during that twenty nineteen season. I believe he also played his largest amount of challenge matches and challenger level events. He really struggled during one thousand nine hundred eighty play you know. You look in his career in his cert- currently six thousand nine hundred nine in challenger events during the course of his career during that twenty nine th season he played i wanna say ten challenger matches and i believe he went to in two hundred eight in those ten challenger matches so that's why his record fell a little bit. He started to try to make the jump at the end of twenty nineteen but then in twenty twenty in the midst of a pandemic given it was very difficult to find playing opportunities. And if you were in the vomit zone three hundred five hundred which normally you probably get into challenge qualities given the limited playing opportunities. You're lucky to find futures events to play last year. That's what a furnace had to spend a lot of time doing and guess what that is. Where evan furnished thrived. You look at what he has done. Since the start of the twenty twenties

"Hey thanks so much for being here it's the Mike Broomhead show we appreciate you spending part of your morning with us so excited to talk football again and watching the draft was exciting joining us is the president Arizona Cardinals Michael Bidwill Michael thanks for coming on congratulations on the draft picks thanks so much Mike we had a great weekend and boy what a what a difference from the end of the twenty nineteen season with our free agency I think she's kind and our personnel group did a fantastic job through free agency and then from last Thursday through Saturday just a hugely successful draft for so we got a lot better as a team I can't wait to get the players into the facility we can't do that yet but get him on the grass and see how they all work Hey even Arizona sports Dan Bickley complimented the draft I mean everybody seems to say this was a great draft for you guys it really was when you think about it I zero Simmons was the best case scenario for us and I always look at those as sort of an out wire when he felt it was it was a no brainer second round pick I'm sorry your third round pick was the supposed to go in the first round in our second round pick was a guy named deandre Hopkins so I mean when you look at it all we it was a huge huge day forcing huge weekend for us and we got a lot better there's no doubt let's talk for a moment about the possibility what the NFL season might look like now I'm I'm a season ticket holder I am so glad that I got my tickets when I did I think that this team is only getting better what are the chances I am in the stadium watching a game this season well it's certainly something we're planning for it now you know a month ago when we were you know the commissioner said Hey I want to press forward with the drafts or some people including football people different teams saying Hey this isn't the right time let's delay it but he was right to keep it on on track and I know that in my conversations with him that you know there's there's a lot that he wants to you know he wants to leave here he wants to do things safely but we're we're certainly planning for a full season with fans but obviously we'll make adjustments as we go as we determine you know what's the best thing and I'm I'm looking forward to hearing more about it from the league and and obviously we've got to stay home orders so you know there are there things that we've got to consider as we look at as the economy starts opening up here over the next you know weeks and months as we see that going so what do the players doing what are you hearing from the players and how they're staying in shape on their own they you know this is not something you don't turn the switch on and you're in football shape are they working at home and and how how to unique ways are they doing that well the the working at home literally I just got up as you call an hour ago that was our first team meeting as part of our virtual offseason training program where there was team meeting we had about including assistant coaches and football staff and others I think about ninety people on the call in so we have the video conference call it was great and they'll be in meetings for the next two weeks because you know video conferences getting the installation further their position groups or the offense but the defense or special teams and when I'm gonna wait and see where where what what guidance only gives us in terms of being able to get back into our training facilities you know all the things that were us so big in the draft and obviously your pics were huge what do you make all the attention Kingsbury getting his first house I thought it was awesome but you know he blew up and broke the internet there for a little bit and it surprised us all so that was I thought it was fantastic it was I know a lot of fans like seeing you know the the coaches and the GM's at home you know some other kids you know coach Belichick with his dog coach Kingsbury with it you know incredible view of of the Arizona with the camelback mountain in the background so I think it was it was fantastic and you know that the TV ratings and you you know the numbers it it was equivalent to a Monday Night Football TV rating what we did over the weekend with the straps so people really tuned in we we we thought they would and readings were up by over thirty five percent it was a huge weekend I think you give hope to the two American to sports fans and to look for something so it's great you love up you've always done so well in the in the games of honoring people you know with with the first responders and the things that you've done with the military it was great to see the NFL doing this with medical professionals the way they mix them into the entire broadcast it seems like a really good thing to do to thank the men and women are on the frontlines of fighting this virus absolutely the weeks done it would not only did we honor those code nineteen first responders the women and men that are that are in the icy use that are in the the emergency departments these hospitals that are fighting it first hand but you know we also raised with our fans one hundred million dollars over the weekend and some of that is coming to Arizona it's going to support our meals on wheels for seniors throughout the state to get you know to make sure is there's all these charities that have been hit financially by by this now financial crisis to make sure they got additional resources at this really unprecedented time you've done so much with the blood rise and how successful they were inside the stadium and the money that you donated to get businesses and keep them going from the cardinals organization and now you've got something going on where you're trying to get fans interacting on social media with local restaurants as well I thought this was pretty cool yes about two weeks ago we launched cartons carry out what you can go to our website or app and we put together a map where fans can nominate locally owned independent restaurants and coffee shops and put him on on the map it's a statewide mapping with the courage our fans pick your favorite place inflict carry out at least twice a week and it was tremendously successful we started out working and we put forty seven restaurants I believe it was in coffee shops on the website on the apps and usually on the map working closely with local first Arizona and these are the mom and pop places literally folks that have their entire life savings were wrapped up in in these are restaurants and coffee shops that you know they needed to carry out business so that they can sustain so we went to their response was tremendous we've got over eight hundred and fifty now Mike on on the website of of additional restaurants that have been dominated and what we're launching today is cardinals carry out I'll call it two point no loosely and what we're gonna do is that it's going to be all going to social media where we're gonna get our our our our players and coaches and some other local dignitaries and celebrities others and to try to get stands to post to their local Kerry out it locally owned mom and pop carry out with the cardinals jerseys honor the cardinals fandom and then posted online and then we're gonna pick somebody every day and give away prizes so we're we're hoping this generates a lot of business for those mom and pop order establishments that really define our neighborhoods and we've all got a favorite place yes or two or three in our neighborhoods yeah I've got some favorites I go to all the time I'm to do that as well I'm gonna start post I'll I'm gonna jump on board with this today myself when I when I carry out from somewhere but it really is a great idea and it's you know the NFL the sports in general is what unifies us and the cardinals have been a great unifying force here in Arizona that's just I think one way that we can still unified the places we love in sports at the same time exactly and I think you know this is about Arizona coming together and we're gonna get through this together but we've got to support each other and you know when you look at that the statistics you know you know most people I mean there are a lot of people that are out of work which is really tough but eighty five percent of the people in Arizona that had a job about six or eight weeks ago still have a job and we're at home working from home but you know we we we can still contribute to the economy by making sure we're doing Kerry out making sure you know working with local locally owned businesses the mom and pop places I think you know the big box stores you know the big you know businesses that are national they're gonna be fine we need to make sure that we keep the Arizona businesses alive so they can re hire people with governor Ducey's able start you know turn it up that dimmer switch in opening up the economy can we hire people in there also but participating in our recovery and an entity's places stay existent so that you know we can continue to go to war that why we don't wait I really appreciate your focus on the community and how it's always been it's one of the greatest bright spots with the Arizona Cardinals of meant to Arizona so thank you for continuing to do that congratulations on the draft again and thanks for coming on the show sure thing thanks Mike right thank you that's Michael Bidwill he is the president Arizona Cardinals and again more investment in the community in mourning and that's what all the way around so I love the cardinals why invest in the cardinals in a season ticket holder coming up in just a moment we're going to talk about I'll be getting close to the other side of this pandemic will talk numbers new numbers in the Arizona coming up in just a moment now if you're looking to purchase a firearm and so many people are doing that right now because home protection self protection it's not just a right it is they were responsibility and with the focus about this pandemic in the unknown the fear of the unknown people realize sometimes you just need to take that extra step to.

"It's tracking back I'm Jim Ron have a great Wednesday well into our number two again my thanks to NFL draft prospect Jalen Elliott from Notre Dame we're going back to back if you're on hold stay there phone call is coming up on the back and the right now as promised we are joined by the host of NFL redzone you can follow him on Twitter at Scott Hanson NFL redzone is replying every Sunday from the twenty nineteen season for seventeen consecutive days during each day at eight AM and three PM and ten PM eastern so a lot of content there we are joined by Scott Hanson Scott I want to get a foot on a second but first how are you and your family and friends doing right now Hey Jim god be with you doing well All Things Considered you know it unprecedented time that we got it all come together at all the cliches the whole about here you know we are all in this together and we're going to come through this we're gonna come through this I just hope that we have an uninterrupted NFL season coming up and that still is yet to be seen that would be great Scott Hanson joining us right as mentioned NFL redzone he's going to reply every Sunday Scott for seventeen straight days I know that was something that people have been asking you about on Twitter for quite some time so what was your reaction when it became official what is actually pretty cool so is his phone as the the you know nationwide a stay at home order started to to roll out everyone all the networks is we almost started going to you know recorded games and historic classic games and what not and my Twitter timeline was just filled with people asking what you guys gonna do read don't reply when you got to do that so the folks at the NFL decided you know what why don't we back behind it seventeen days prior to the draft will play one episode of NFL redzone each day every day for seventeen straight days and you re live the entire season leading up to the biggest offseason spectacle in the entire sports world the NFL draft and and some of it was pretty cool and and people are really really received it well so far it's like everybody remembers their favorite moments of the season but if you watch NFL redzone on the replace today is week three quote on quote you'll say oh yeah I forgot that guy did that or I forgot that that happened in that game there it's a fun way to remove the season and and take our minds off the serious business of the world Scott Hanson joining as host of the NFL redzone it is a great way to relieve the season it's a great show it's a great product and curious I'm always curious about process but especially as it relates to that program because there really is no show quite like that show so when the season is going what is a normal Sunday like for you yes so I get up I'm in Los Angeles and so that means the games kick off at ten o'clock Pacific time on Sunday so I get up around five AM flip on NFL network's are watching the pregame show grab a shower going to work I'm you I like to be the first one in the studio and I usually am get their finish up my last research I've been researching for days and hours every day leading up to the show seven hours no commercials all off the top of my head reacting to everything that we see so you really have to saturate your mind with facts and figures and and story lines that could play out on NFL Sunday grab some breakfast dehydrate myself I eat breakfast about three hours before the show three or four hours for the show and then I called off all foods and liquids after that as you well know there are biological needs that go into hosting a seven hour show with no commercials have a production meeting we do a quick little rehearsal at the top of the show right before the show begins and then we're we're rocking and rolling for seven hours a commercial free football it's a heck of a day it's insane Scott Hanson joining us I mean it's amazing because I've done I've done five hour talk shows I've done for our talk shows this is a three hour talk show I was he's got but I have breaks so how do you go about preparing yourself not to from a content standpoint but from an energy standpoint seven straight hours no breaks I mean I we are we talking no food and no beverages like what do you do to fuel up and keep your energy up and stay locked in I'm a little bit like a zoo animal during the show because our studio is very small people that visit the show they're actually surprised it's a green screen background and so it's about the size of like a large living room and and that's about how big it is not not a huge studio when they come in there and they they bring some Cajun there for seven hours they'll bring me a banana because that helps with with bye we were not helped with cramping because if I'm dehydrated like I'll cramp up on Sunday nights because I have no water inside of me after the show that I will I just need a little potassium so they give me a banana and one bottle of water and a lot of times they don't even eat the banana because I'm afraid to be caught me chew and having to say something and then the other and then the other thing is I barely touch the water maybe the top little at regular size bottle water is all I drink from an energy standpoint I think I'll be honest yeah I love the game man I mean we all love the game right I love the game and I love the fact that fans across the world that people in the industry in the industry of sports media and in the industry of the NFL are watching NFL redzone to see what is happening in the most followed sport animals followed arguably form of entertainment in our country so if that doesn't get my fire going I need to find something else to do and so far through the eleven years we've been doing the show it's it's been it's been a heck of a thing I'm very blessed to be in the captain's chair every Sunday you understand what that represents Scott Hanson is joining us you know there's so many things I want talking about but we jump ahead to something else you went to Syracuse you walked on the football team when you think back on that time what kind of memories do you have all man it was awesome so I was a decent high school player I was handed a guy you know capital football team at my high school you know all conflict and stuff but I wasn't a division one recruit I would have been like that division three player if I went to college and and and you you know played that way but I I knew Syracuse had the unbelievable broadcasting program which I knew I wanted to be a sportscaster back in high school and I said I still love the game I'm gonna walk on the team if they'll have me I'm gonna go would be the best practice player they've ever seen so I was kind of like Rudy without the glorified sack at the end of my senior here last year I was a human punching bag or human human blocking dummy at Syracuse for four years but it was great made a lot of relationships learn the internal workings of a major football program learn values and concepts of team that I still apply in in my daily life and it was awesome I was I was teammates with Marvin Harrison the hall of fame wide receiver and I were on the scout team to get other you know run and run a wide receiver routes and stuff so it was it was a beautiful time in it and it it benefits me to this day Scott Hanson joining us now you mention real life as an example earlier in your career you were a reporter and anchor for Comcast sports net and mid Atlantic and it is zero point Scott you decide to take a sabbatical for some personal discovery I want to get into what you did during that time in a moment but what inspired you to make a move at that time yeah so yeah it's it's it's it's an interesting and and crazy kind of part of my life everything in my life was geared towards being a sportscaster I wanted to be like you're a little bit older than me so I wanted to be the next Jim Rome I wanted to be the next Bob Costas I want to be that guy who was you know on the top of the mountain skews me and everything in my life was geared towards that long story short my life it took a spiral downward like my my career wasn't the filling needs the of my life what we do I started becoming waterless well I came to faith I became a Christian in the mail about the mid nineties and when I when I put my faith in Christ everything in my life changed I'm sure you've heard the stories from athletes or maybe even coaches or people in your life before suffice it to say that that's where my life started orienting itself towards I was like this is this is what my life is about sportscasting is great but it's got to be number two or or down the list in my life it can't be number one so I actually left television I did some missionary in charity work I work with a mother Theresa's organization helping the poorest of the poor in Los Angeles and other parts of of the United States and it and if you know what I got back to the TV after awhile and now I live out my faith hopefully I live out my faith a daily in my life and career and it's made me a better broadcaster to have better life perspective now than I did prior to coming to faith Scott Hanson joining us I appreciate you sharing that story now some piano also you are quite the traveler including you have run with this double as in Spain your climb mount Kilimanjaro you went face to face with sharks and dive cages and more when did that passion from travel for start yeah so do you know you know Mitch album right the excellent writer yeah everybody knows Mitch I grew up in the Detroit area and Michelle mom long time writer for the Detroit Free Press he wrote an article I wrote a column he went running with the bulls in like the mid this would be in the mid eighties I'm guessing and he wrote this and I'm like a sophomore in high school and I read this an album was single at the time I'm single so right I he had discretionary income we could just pick up the doctor explained was white or something yeah I'm going to Spain Robert bolt and when I read that it hit me and I was like are you kidding me and then I read the the Hemingway novel the sun also rises which a lot of that takes place in the San Fermin festival running of the bulls in Pamplona and the romanticism of it hit me and I'm like if I ever make enough money and I can just pick up and go I'm going to just do it and I went did that that was my first of my adventures what ran with the bulls had an unbelievable adrenaline experience and it just the community experience at the festival there and then I started yeah I I said I'm okay what what else are great adventures in the.
Two players fined for beer chugging get beer sponsorships
"I saw some last night we wrote about it just before I went to bed I always look for that one last story then I can close before I all of the night one last copy paste and snarky comment and this is a hell of a way to circumvent the NFL's ruled that thou shalt not get your fines paid by someone else you know when ever someone is fine the requirement is that the person who is fine to pay the fine and no one else can paid on their behalf we've seen go fund me pages pop up where grown men and women presumably donating money to a fine that a player easily has enough money to pay but just because of the principle of it like that kind of stupidity like give that money to an actual charity or someone you know who needs the help dum dum but Marcus Peters a ravens and Eric Fisher the chiefs both were fined fourteen thousand thirty seven dollars during the twenty nineteen season for celebrations that involve grabbing a beer and either actually drinking it or trying to drink it we're just pouring it on their head I think for Eric Fisher was more just kind of port in the general direction of his face both were fined both now have bud light sponsorships under a rule that the NFL put in place back in may allowing individual partnerships with the official beer of the National Football League yes that's not Gatorade net bucket the guys stirring with a long sleeve of cups covered in plastic that's been god knows where it's beer the official beer of the NFL it's funny how the vision to be the official anything like it has no relevance whatsoever to the playing of the game the official candy bar the official beer of the NFL paying one point six billion over a six year window bud light paying on the side Eric Fisher Marcus
Where Does Cam Newton Go From Here?
"Jeremy the first line of your story is. He can't go out like this. It's kind of crazy to me that that is even being said about Cam Cam Newton in the first place. If you look at the situation with the Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton a guy that called Superman of former. MVP It is just hard to make sense ESPN NFL writer. Jeremy Fowler has spent the last few weeks reporting on Cam Newton's future going into the season of you to tell me that Cam Newton would potentially be on the way out of Carolina and there will be this big mess I would not by any stretch have believed you before we get into the confluence of factors that led us to this moment. Explain why it's so unusual to even be having a conversation like this about a quarterback like Newton will mean. It is crazy because he changed the game game. This is a guy that was bred to be a winner from his days at Auburn he won the national championship number. One overall pick set rookie records Kurds for total yards on winning. MVP in two thousand fifteen three different seasons of ten or more wins. Everything was lined up for this guy to be a top five top top ten quarterback for the next fifteen twenty years. Just terrible lineup. What an improvisational improvisational play by CAM? Newton he altered the way. We look at the style of the quarterback position. Because we've seen running quarterbacks before but this is a guy. I was flipping into the end zone quarterback. He's making the superman sign with his arms after scoring and and you know he was Such an imposing figure that he looked like a combination of a pass rusher linebacker and a running back coming at you full speed and the whole the mack truck. That was something ended. The League really hadn't seen before goodness isn't this is the NFL. You're not supposed to be able to do that. And then there was the off field appeal. This is a guy who would show up to. His press. Conference was a fashion show. He's got the bedazzled hats glasses being able to be Orally gifted. There's something that I think. A master to a degree. I mean this is a guy that we couldn't take our eyes off of whether whether he was on the field or do you think his style of football in some ways impacted his body in a way that led us to this point it has to be a factor. I mean we're talking about a guy who's taken eleven hundred plus hit since two thousand eleven and more than half of those have been in the last four years since around two thousand fifteen. That's more than Russell Wilson. More than any other guy. Things have piled up on them as a result he was all about power shear power that was part of what made him so great. He did bulldoze you in the open field. He could run for the thirty yards and so just. The pounding as a result has clearly affected where areas now so the first few years of camps career sort of builds towards this magical season in two thousand fifteen. He's the MVP and it all leads up to the Super Bowl and what should have been a high point for him ended up being a low one the pants lose and perhaps unfairly the the indelible memory for a lot of people is the fumble. He failed to recover. Do you think that game changed perceptions of him roll. It stripped him of his invincibility. One one personnel told me the Denver took his Superman Cape. They took it away and he was never the same after that. And that's probably unfair because it's one game on the the biggest stage but you know. Denver played a certain way where they kept hitting them. The seven six rushing four-ball comes out of the hands on the ground still on the ground picked up by the yard line. And since then cam sense of some really good moments but it's been a little hit or miss even on the field when he is in the lineup and so it was a turning point for a career that was at a wildly high trajectory at that point you're talking about not only an MVP season but he could get into the end zone. Whenever he wanted that year it was just? He played a pretty much flawless season. And then it all SORTA changed after that game so that super bowl will is kind of a turning point for Cam than what happened last season in two thousand eighteen well last season he was a potential. MVP candidate after the first eight or so weeks. The panthers are sitting at six and two Newton looks great. He's got nineteen total touchdowns you know he's rushing but he's also being patient the pocket making throws so this was a team That was on the rise and was sort of recapturing. Maybe the magic. They had a couple years earlier for that. Super Bowl run so it was nothing but promising at that point an annual in early Donovan. Where you go to Pittsburgh you go to Heinz field? You're thinking this'll be another turning point for your season and then TJ comes the blindside. He knocks Cam. Newton he runs right into that right right shoulder into the turf and he had already been on the injury report with a shoulder injury. They didn't think it was serious at that time but watts shot clearly reaggravated things to the point where by by the end of the year he was struggling to throw the ball. Forty forty five yards. I mean it was pretty ugly out there right. I mean he wasn't pulled but I remember number. They stopped using him for Hail Marys I N. It became apparent that something was deeply wrong. Throw by CAM. It didn't reach. The end zone landed fifteen yards short of the goal line. This is a guy that could throw sixty five yards on a rope. And so they're taking them out putting Taylor Heinecke of all people to throw a deep ball. I mean there couldn't have been a deeper foreshadow for maybe the problems that were rising with Cam Newton's future alright so he ends up shutting it down for the last two games of that twenty eighteen season and in the off season. He has some shoulder surgery but by the time this season starts it seems like he has recovered and things are looking optimistic again for Cham. How does the twenty nineteen season actually began for him throwing the ball? He looked pretty tentative. No touchdown passes in the first two weeks. He didn't really look as comfortable normally. Does you know that you can win games with them but certainly not an MVP level that. They're there used to so after the panthers second game against the Bucks. It's revealed that Cam has some kind of foot injury but nobody really knows what's going on right. There's a lot of mystery around the injury and all of a sudden campaigns out this fifteen minute youtube video go here we are just record. I want to be brutally honest. The video was him. Basically Chilin in a hat and glasses passes and he's in like this leather black chair and he opens up about his foot injury as I'm about to jog around realize okay. Uh I feel like in the game but it's like something missing. There was a bit bizarre. But it's it. It was good that he came on spoke about it. And try to provide some clarity and in that video basically said got hurt. preseason hurt the foot against the Patriots this is where I got him away because automatically. I got play we go. I can't let fans down. He basically told coaches. Hey I'm good I'm all good. You know I'm Superman. I can continue to play. And then once week two-headed reaggravated the injury. What happened offended with this footage metatarsal bones and they separate from the base of the? That's a list rank injury but if it's a really bad separation or some sort of break then usually need surgery. Cam has not had that yet which pretends everybody to believe. He's got a sprain but a pretty bad one just hasn't healed yet but he doesn't want to have surgery. I'm able to get the time off for me to. He'll get back to one hundred percent then. I have no doubt in my mind everything everything that we won't as a team can still be accomplished. He made clear in the video that they need to go away and get back to what I was. and that's significant anytime. A player says that that means they're out that doesn't mean they're going to rush back to play and so he basically new I think at that point I was GonNa shut it down

"Twenty nineteen season but my gosh big cat let's say what I've seen some ugly moments over the years while watching NFL football but I can't think of an uglier visual than a player removing another player's helmet and then swinging it at him and hitting him in the head with a happy with fourteen seconds left last night in Cleveland's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers Browns one twenty one to seven total garbage time everybody just trying to get out of there now look Mason route off wrestling with miles gear on the ground and it looked at one point like rude office trying to take off Garrett's helmet well he was unsuccessful Garrett was successful off went Rudolph's helmet and then Garrett hit rude off with his own helmet something we've never seen before I think the closest we came was lousy back in the eighties ripping off a guy's helmet and throwing it at him not hitting him with it in the head just throwing it at him this is how much off and whacked on top of the head somehow Mason route off was not rendered unconscious like he was a few weeks ago when he took a helmet to helmet hit from oral Thomas of the ravens just a horrible visual for the NFL at a time when the NFL is very serious about player health and safety this is not going to be a good week for miles garret or the Cleveland Browns because I think the aftermath of this thing big cat is going to entail a suspension that at least Kerry's through the rest of the season the real question for me is whether it goes beyond the twenty nineteen season I ate the part about we're lucky that Missouri didn't get hurt more you're absolutely right now if you look at it it's clear that the helmet kind of hit him where the soft padding is and that probably say the something a lot worse the crazy thing to me Mike is that miles gear it you know up until he rips his armies Ross helmet off if you just throws it right there it's nothing it's a great rivalry game it's one of those classic injury say AFC north football can't wait to watch these two teams play in two weeks like if he had just stopped at that moment where he rips Mason Rudolph helmet off we've seen that happen before we've seen guys go at each other in that kind of manner it's everything that happened after that we're just all hell broke loose and I I agree with you that we haven't seen anything like this I will come to push back on you that this is the worst thing we've seen on the football field because I think we've seen guys get paralyzed we saw like I said a guy bleeding out of here two hours right earlier so there has been that's the only funny thing that I see at lease on Twitter the instant reaction where everyone says this is I cannot believe I'm watching this well let's just remember this is a football game and guys are going at each other million miles an hour and of course is outside of the football game and now that we're not going homes that's my point is that issue but right this is also still very violent football game in there is something weird about our brains where we watch guys goal launch each other at a at each other a million miles an hour and I get I said I said in this the truth there was a guy bleeding out of his ear two hours earlier but then when someone gets hit with a helmet outside of the game now it's the most disgusting you know act of violence we've ever seen so I think that's a little weird thing that we play with our brain and everyone gets very upset and I understand it's obviously not inside the game but it's a weird dynamic point I see on Twitter I get that for you what's your point can I can I can I get some point are you gonna filibuster all the way to the break the heart break at the end of a half hour we're going to do here here's the point it is completely and totally beyond the boundaries of what you expect and except when you walk on to a football field you do not abandon the rules of society when you play football when you play hockey when you play basketball when you play baseball Marty McSorley in two thousand alternately was charged with assault and was sentenced to eighteen months of probation for whacking Donald Brashear in the head with a stick there are limits even in hockey where they get it on and they throw the gloves down and they fight but it's one thing to fight with your knuckles it's another thing to use your stick as a weapon there are lines you can't cross that's my point yes we've seen guys horribly injured and paralyzed those are all things that have happened in the confines of playing football not within the confines of someone saying I'm gonna take a street fight and I'm gonna have it play out on the football field well after the play that's my point and this is right up there with what Albert Haynesworth did to Andre gorod now Haynesworth kind of pulled the helmet off abroad and stomped on his forehead and and look at it it it was bloody it was nasty and that was all before the NFL had to pay for the about player health and safety and the suspension then was five games this is the first time we've seen this kind of deliberate misconduct after the NFL decide to get serious about health and safety and that's where the real test is going to be what is enough I'm going to do because now the NFL supposedly cares about players overall health and safety well and there's another important distinction here Mike that makes it different than the Albert Haynesworth and it makes different than the Sioux it's a prime time game where everyone watch the replay over and over and over and over again if this was a one o'clock on a Sunday I genuinely think yes people would be very they have similar reactions but I don't think it would dominate the news cycle like it is right now because the standalone game in two it happened to a court back and I don't you can tell me that I'm way off on this but I think they're of miles gear does too does what he did to me is rough to an offense of linemen the reaction that people have to it is completely different I think there is a idea of of protecting quarterbacks and we saw listen let last big moment we saw for Mason Rudolph because this he hasn't been good let's just say that on the field the bus big mall we saw was when he had a very violent can crusher gets Baltimore so people have that visual in their head as well where they were they're saying Mason Rudolph is coming off a severe severe concussion where he was you know I had to come off the field led to take his face mask off and now it's not a month later he's getting hit on the on the head with a helmet so I think those two things might add to the reaction and what the punishment will be not only the the epiphany that the NFL had about player safety in two thousand nine but the fact that it was it a prime time game and the fact that it was a quarterback who got hit not an alignment on lineman thing and you're right if there had been an injury inflicted on Mason road off of he just collapses in a heap like he did when he was hit by oral Thomas within the confines of the game then I think you do have to raise the question of whether not miles Garrett gets charged in prosecutor for assault I really do because the laws do not suspend when you walk on the football field but apart from that it's a horrible visual for the NFL that we're gonna see over and over again all weekend long we're gonna be talking about it on Sunday I already expected they'll be a segment on football night America where you're we address the timing of the miles Garrett suspension because usually they wait until the weekend is completely over the smart move would be to go ahead and suspended today so we're not spending all of Sunday replaying that moment talking about what may happen to miles Garrett just get it done now there's no reason to wait until Monday and the NFL would be wise to move forward and implement the punishment today before the weekend rolls around but the fact look we're already condition to believe the quarterback should be protected because they are protected when they're in the pocket passing and you mentioned the Mason route off circumstance what if this had been a Tom Brady a pack of my homes and Aaron Rodgers a star quarterback it would have been even worse it's just Mason road often no disrespect Mason route off but I spend a lot of last night wondering whether or not he should be benched for Devon Hodges or whether or not they should go to the calling capric work out and seriously consider signing it because he may be better than the guys they currently have available and even though it's only Mason route off it's still an egregious act yeah yeah you're absolutely right the one thing I want to push back on that I've seen a lot and for you just mentioned it the idea that like if this had happened in a workplace a regular workplace the person will be in jail I think that that's a little bit much because guess what the NFL football field that's not a regular workplace and again that's not excusing what so ever what Mao's gear did I think the people who are out there right now saying well Mason Rudolph started it and try to grab his helmet that's crazy again if miles get rich Mason Ross helmet off and tosses it into the stands it's a completely different visual everything that he did from the moment he ripped his helmet off afterwards is where it's a big big problem I I like it we've seen guys rip each other's homes off before million times that seems normal but this is again not a regular workplace is not like a eat a walking into Deloitte and someone bashing you over the head with a helmet it's football fields the National Football League these guys are playing a very violent physical sport an adrenaline is coursing through their veins and it's hard to turn off that switch is so I I don't know if we like if everyone I completely disagree with you with you okay because there are limits to the accepted violence in any of these sports and if you're not capable of understanding where that line is then you should be playing in the NFL that that's what I the point I've been to I've been making the commissioner always says that playing in the NFL is a privilege not a right is it do they really mean that because there are other guys out there because I I think what you're doing in a round about way I don't think you don't all purpose you're demeaning all football players by suggesting that there these Neanderthals no I can't turn it off you have to be able to turn it off you have to be able to turn it off and what you did last night was so far after the play ended that that you can't just say well it's football so you have to accept their only gonna get whacked in the head with your own home what I'm saying is there's new wants to all of this that people are just painting a completely black and white and saying if you if this happened in your office you would be in jail right now if this is not normal like this is not the normal life easier these are ads that are a point all one percent of the population there it's insane so they should this mutual I why no other in the Mike I'm just saying I think the PS your car no they know exactly what you're saying you know exactly what you're so I'm not I'm not sure realizing it all because I think again miles geared should be suspended he should be suspended for the rest of the year and I think it's actually it could even maybe leak into next year because what he did you're absolutely right you can't do under any circumstances whatsoever I just think it's funny we do this one I mean like we do this with everything when it comes to hang on a second we're going to start in six months listen listen the the here's a reality there are a lot of stressful jobs out there we are blessed and fortunate that our jobs do not tell the kind of stress the other jobs have and you mentioned to Lloyd Wright in an accounting firm there are moments of high stress when you practice law there are moments of high stress and there have been times when I was practicing law now I want to punch someone in the face right you have to restrain that you have to control that in a civilized society and the rules of a civilized society or not abandon simply because you're playing football there is a point where you have to comply with what the other humans expect and the other humans expect not to be punched in the face not to be hit in the head with our own helmet not to be jacked upside the head with a stapler these are things that we should all expect no matter what your profession is Mike here's a difference okay and here's where I maybe I didn't do a good job of explaining it when you are playing in the NFL you are playing a sport in a game that is violent by nature you were always on that age you were always on that line we talk about all the time VOA guys playing on that line where they're playing within the confines of the game but they're physically imposing on the other team I think and again this is no in no defense miles Gerrit I figure is a difference between what happens on a football field when you're always playing on that violent edge and what happens sitting there in your office and being like well if this happened in my office it would be totally different yeah of course error be told the same it will be totally different it's just a different set of circumstances and I just it's it's I think what I'm doing is actually humanizing the players more than anything in saying that they play a sport the take such a toll and has them playing on such a line that something like this can happen again not excuse me but it can happen this is what the they're always on that line where it's like we want you to play a your physical bass we want you to play your physical most violent imposing what you know going at the other team that switch is a lot closer for you a lot close that switch that if you're sitting behind the queue here's a here's one thing I want to solder remember when February rolls around we hear the stories about the stupid questions that get asked of the players at the scouting combine in the different circumstances try to put them in this is exactly what the teams are.

I would have put case Keenum in there no no I'm talking but still with the bows of the best the best homes that would be one. pres I don't know if it would be Brady. now he started on Thursday. okay Roger Sarah Rogers so according to this site. Aaron Rodgers and Patrick both homes would influence to spread the most and actually it's Rogers. by seven and a half points my homes will soon and Brady by seven points do you want to guess what quarterback affects the point spread the least according to handicappers from battle line I was gonna guess Mitchell to basically based on what we saw our Tina but. going where you're going and how come for you would be to the listeners of this radio station that is a delight it would be you are manning and I guess the reason being is they have Dalton Keenum fits Patrick it's zero meaning their replacement would not change the point spread in their mind in any way is this like forty football betting war for about well wins above replacement basically this is coming from bet online AG from their group of people and handicappers one not. the point being is this. a lot of folks around the league a lot of folks outside in New York they waiting for the other shoe to drop when Daniel Jones is going to take this job I will know it's not gonna be weak one and if the giants winning games they're going to put off the quarterback decision. here's your argument our make. the minute the giants see. six losses several losses. especially if we're talking early to late November. that's when it becomes imperative you gotta get your key quarterback on Phil is it a broken rob joins us up next on a family some Ronnie RO robbed a while man. took what the Yankees.

Patriots C Andrews' season in jeopardy
"Serious health news for the patriots one of the team's captain starting center David answers as blood clots in his lungs is twenty nineteen season now in jeopardy league sources have confirmed to ESPN's Mike Reiss he was hospitalized well growing undergoing tests to pinpoint the cause of the clouds on a positive note he reportedly was released from the hospital Monday night he did put twenty eight snaps in the patriots preseason win over the Panthers on Thursday night wasn't a practice the past couple of days top back up Sir for your veterans that take cares and James variance between the two of them you're talking about sixty eight career games but only five starts Michael junior I was guilty with offense of line what's the impact of this in your mind for the patriots I I think it's certainly concerning because of what the position of center usually occupies for most line it's a communicator it's someone who works hand in hand with the quarterback and listen it's a relationship was not documented all the time I feel like Peyton manning and Jeff Saturday night modern era really were that one where the show tomorrow we did pieces on them watching film together it's a very valuable relationship and as Tom Brady gets up there I'm sure the last change the better an offense that seems to thrive in it they have one of the better off ends of lines in the NFL and took a hit there's no question here you want the best for his health at the first and foremost of without worry about it but for the patriots on the field this is going to be an adjustment teddy keris is been a backup swing guy there for the last couple of years now but that's for a reason yeah you get comfortable right yeah eggs especially if you're craving know you're one of the greatest ever in Tom Brady you so there's a comfort level the same guy in front of all by the way his career Andrews has been won AAC championship game and the rest Super Bowl correct in five years yeah it's been amazing to leave a bowl and blood clots when you just don't mess with it all you do not throwing a whole ism and that could enjoy like me and that's that's house that is again out of the realm of that you know in the end goal type injury this is like whoa hold on I mean that's what killed their Thomas yeah I mean after the car crash he it was a blood clot and they didn't catch it and that's what that that's literally killed him so you you can not mess with that stuff when it comes to that so first and foremost we hope his health is okay and then we'll figure out from there with the
James Harrison says Le'Veon Bell should return to Pittsburgh Steelers, then fake injury to avoid games
"If you're like me in there, some of you that are, you've got levian bell on your fantasy football team, and you're just waiting. And the way this thing is set up to go is that levian Bill wants to record the twenty nineteen season as service time, which means he doesn't have to show up until November the six, twenty eight season. Yeah. Or or week ten of the season. James Harrison, his teammate today suggested he should come in November, sixteenth, and then faking injury. So he doesn't have to play a single game for the Steelers this year and still becomes an unrestricted free agent after the year. Now, here's a, here's something interesting if the Steelers trade levian bell and there are rumors that they're, they're going to trade him or at least are feeling teams up. The jets are one team that that expressed interest, they would receive a third round compensatory pick in the twenty nineteen draft the upcoming draft. Okay, if a trade him if they trade him, okay. If they just wave him, just say, were sending the franchise tag you go or ever. You want health fellow well met, you get you get a third round compensatory pick in the twenty nineteen draft if they wait until after the season and after the Super Bowl and they decide levian bell leaves, they get a competitor. Ori pick, but it's not till twenty twenty. So in order to get a pick in this upcoming draft, they've got a trade or waive him during this season. So there's incentive there actually is because if you trade 'em you're taking on another salary and other contract, James Connors been pretty effective in very effective. Yeah. Who would have thought that it would end that way? You know there's enough teams that like really could use a running back like Seattle could really use a running back. I could like I, if if you could send him there, Detroit like desperately needs a running, especially a guy but the, but the problem is the same for anybody else. Are you gonna give him? Are you gonna pay him big, right? If he's unrestricted, free it. And how much money are you willing to pay? Levian bell. I'm trying to think what is what is girls number Todd, Gurley nineteen. I think he got nineteen million and I think fifty million guaranteed is levian bell. Gonna get fifty million dollars guaranteed out there. I'm not sure that that's their anywhere else. Yeah, I would see because I think if he got traded, he'd have to prove his worth in running backs. Frankly, don't get traded that often, Eric dickers- and got traded Marshall. Faulk got traded. Even if he gets trade like you can't really trade for them. Because the situation is the same. He can still hold out to week ten and record a year of service time. Agent contract you once he has no incentive to come
