Is Hurricane Ida the Result of Climate Change?

"You might remember a few weeks back. We told you about a landmark report from the un's intergovernmental panel on climate change. It warned that human caused climate change is accelerating and that we're running out of time to avoid its most catastrophic effects and that extreme weather events are more likely as a result right now hurricane can ida is making its dangerous trek towards a us gulf coast hurricane ida is exactly the kind of event that scientists were talking about on saturday evening. Ida was a modest category two storm with one hundred and five mph winds but it's poise to rapidly intensify and that's what it did just as forecasters predicted so hurricane ida has strengthened to a category three storm with winds of one hundred fifteen miles an hour trump saturday night maximum sustained winds of one hundred thirty miles per hour into sunday morning. It's now up to one hundred forty five miles per hour side. A gut stronger by the hour is storm has strengthened yet again. The last time we spoke sustained winds were one forty five. They're now up to one fifty. I wanted to all of this at the storm up to be at. Its most powerful. Just as it made landfall over louisiana bring as much as twenty inches of rain in some areas with the potential for destructive storm surge yesterday so how did i to get so powerful so fast so climate change is basically supercharging storm. That's rebecca hersher correspondent for. Npr's climate team. We spoke on monday. Climate change does is. It adds fuel to hurricane fuel in the form of heat so hurricanes over water you can think of them like engines spinning up like a propeller on a plane and the energy for that propeller comes from the heat in the water as the earth gets hotter because of climate change the water on the surface of the ocean. It also guitar. So there's more energy for storms like ida to get really big and really

Is it ok to transplant a Lilac in November?

"Eric says my mother in law passed away earlier this year. And we're in the process of selling her house now before it sold. We'd like to move one of her lilac bushes to our house. Can you do it this time of year and one of the chances of it surviving. Well you can do it. This time of year period The odds on survival are pretty standing. Lilac is a pretty sturdy plant period. this this is good so having done that. With almost identical circumstances we moved lilac from a farm site to home here in the community that required a tree size ball. I think if i remember right we must ahead about a three and a half foot wide ball. goody keen twenty inches deep would have accommodated the four inch diameter tree. We we did that so that we were sure to get enough route with it and it was completely successful now like any transplant. It was set back a little the first year but it it really never Never showed any deficiency. The color stayed good. And then i can't remember whether it was the next year because we did have to use some top trimming little finning on the plant us because it was necessary for the plant sake as well as accommodating laws but i think it flowered the second year and that that plan is. I said he had a tree size route ball. It was at least eight feet high and four feet across with multiple stems. So yes go for it now. This is not well not a negative time of year to do it but get it in Was still fit for human to be out there digging and try to get a good sized root ball and then because of the time of year and it's almost always a practical thing try to dig a hole or get it at least started where you're going to put it then go dig the plant. Move it into That that open soil whole And adjust the size of the whole after you get the plant. Just don't let the roots dry out. At all. And i i would say it should be perfectly

All of Teslas 2021 Model Year Updates

Tesla Daily: Tesla News & Analysis

06:11 min | 1 year ago

All of Teslas 2021 Model Year Updates

"Everybody, Rob Power here, and today we haven't exciting episode. We have updates from Tesla on almost every single vehicle in the lineup. So we're going to go through exactly what has changed because there's a lot here to keep track up. So tell normally doesn't make these broad sweeping changes across the lineup they sort of just update each vehicle as they have changes to make. This then is pretty unique for Tesla and it does seem like they're making these changes right at the same time that they're changing the model year. So even though on tussles website, they don't necessarily designate what model you're. The vehicle is the vehicle identification number does still indicate that and from those Vince we've been able to see. That Tesla has just now started producing those twenty twenty one model year vehicles over the last couple of weeks we'll talk a little bit more about that later but let's get right into the changes here. Predominantly, the changes have come to the model three but again, there are updates to all the vehicles which every captain a chart here. If you are watching on video, we'll go out of the traditional order here of as three X Y and switch it up. We'll start with the model three. So the standard range plus originally had a two hundred and fifty mile range that has now been increased by thirteen miles two, hundred, sixty, three the long range version saw the most significant bump for the model. Going from three hundred, twenty, two miles before now to three hundred and fifty three miles of range and the performance jumped up by sixty miles from two hundred, ninety, nine miles before now to three hundred fifteen for the standard range plus and the performance that's about a five percent increase in range. But for the long range, it's actually about nine and a half percent. Unfortunately at this point in time, we don't know what is driving that significant variance between the long range, all wheel drive, and the other trims were just going to have to wait and see once he's actually start being delivered to customers aside from the range. The long range and performance versions are now quicker zero to sixty. The Long Range non-performance has been updated from four point four seconds before to four point two seconds now, and the performance has gone from three point two seconds to sixty down to three point one as for other changes we've talked about quite a few of these earlier this week about the big one here is the heat pump house actually able to confirm that the new version of the model three does have the heat pump. This was just from one source at Tesla. So it is possible that that source was misinformed but from my knowledge, the model three now does have a heap like the model why that should improve the efficiency especially in colder climates we know that the model three has Now been updated from chrome to have black trim instead a power trunk. There is a new steering wheel electric is saying that the steering wheel is heated I have not seen that confirmed anywhere else though. So I think that's a question mark at this point in time, there's new updates. So the air wheels and the sport wheels have been updated to a new look, and then the performance model three has been updated to the Uber. Turbine wheels that are currently on the model y though on the model three, they're an inch smaller at just twenty inches rounding things out are I believe updated mirrors though I think this happened earlier sometime around September to add a heating element to the side mirrors. And then I believe there's also now an auto dimming rear view mirror for the model three. There has been updates to the windows apparently for better soundproofing, and then of course, the updated center console. So the fingerprint trap that was the piano black glossy console is no more at least for the model three does still remain on the Model Y. so speaking of the Monowai, let's move on to the updates there these are just range focused. So the long range model why has improved by ten miles from previous EPA rating of three hundred, sixty miles to a new rating of three hundred and twenty six miles three percent increase there, and then the performance model why has gone from two hundred ninety? One miles up to three. So twelve miles there or an additional four percent we'll come back to that for a little bit more analysis but just around things out for the Model S. The long range range actually stayed the same at four hundred and two miles. So no change there. But the performance had a significant increase from three hundred, forty, eight miles before up to three, hundred, Eighty, seven, thirty, nine miles incremental or eleven point two percent of course, the other big news on the Model S. This week has been the price cut. So the long range has been reduced by fifty five hundred dollars while the performance reduced by three thousand as for the X. No price cut here so. There is a pretty big spread now between the US on the ex but the long range version did see a range increase as we talked about earlier this week when we had seen that, Maroni sticker from a new delivery, it's gone from three hundred, fifty one miles before now up twenty miles to three hundred, seventy, one about six percent increase, and then the performance seeing similar level of increase to the performance model s from three Oh five before now up to three, hundred, forty, one about a twelve percent increase or thirty six miles. So to the best of my knowledge that captures all the changes across the entire lineup. But of course, as these vehicles start to be delivered, we may still. Uncover some other minor changes but to summarize all this, if we look at the average here across the entire lineup, not using any waiting by sales or anything like that destroyed up across the board previously tussles average range three, hundred, twenty miles per vehicle. Now it's three, hundred and forty. So a twenty mile increase for the average vehicle tesla sales or about six percent. So how is Tesla able to achieve all this? Well, back in July? We had heard that Panasonic had already developed technology that had resulted in a more than five percent increase in energy density on Tussles twenty-one seventy battery cells and Reuters reported that they would quote start converting lions at Gaggenau Vada from September so I think now. We're mid October were starting to see the results of those updates in the lineup, and we're also seeing improvements and s an ex and those were to use the eighteen sixties from. Japan not the twenty one seventies from Geena. Vada but if Panasonic was able to improve the twenty-one seventies while they were probably able to improve the eighteen, six fifty as well I think it's tough to find another explanation for the roughly six percent increase in the Model X. range other than updated cells. But the confusing part is that zero percent increase on the long range model s remember though when the Model S. increased from somewhere around three hundred, eighty miles up to that four hundred to rating the model extra. At all. So really it's just catching up with the previous model s updates. So I wonder if maybe Panasonic had been testing an earlier version of that new battery cell with the five percent energy density increase in just the Model S. but then it wouldn't explain why the performance model which would presumably have the same pack as the long range is seeing a similar increase. On the model here as the Model X.

But as the song continues, they become more common resulting in a snort crescendo. The increase in smarts reflect the animals in our emotional state as they become more excited or more aggressive, their songs become well snorter. And those snorts according to Weisman's findings also become louder and harsher. The snorts study in the journal Animal Behavior. Weisman thinks that the snort crescendo together with the increasing harshness makes the songs impossible to ignore and grabbed the attention of other higher axes which makes sense. Harshness is a salient feature in the sounds of crying newborns, barking dogs and frame the piglets. Acoustic harshness is routinely used in movie soundtracks to increase tension and. It might be that the. North's are actually what what's keeping the listeners listening as a lot of times. 5 tropical cyclones are in the Atlantic at the same time for only the second time in history

"Tonight for the first time in nearly fifty years. They've ocean is home to five rapidly growing named tropical cyclones with one hurricane sally set to slam into the southern coast tomorrow for the very latest I'm joined by ABC News. Chief meteorologist Ginger Zee now Ginger Hurricane Sally is clearly strengthening as it approaches your location in Alabama? Where do you see the storm heading? Juju I'm in the heart of mobile and you've got things like that building with sandbags in front of it, and that is for good reason from here back through coastal Mississippi that's where the brunt of the storm is going to impact. So let's look at on the satellite got lot better organized as we went through today, and that's going to keep going as it moves really painfully slow to the West northwest it will finally start to make that northern tick tomorrow afternoon and evening, and we expect landfall sometime around midnight or thereafter early Wednesday morning. So this is a slow. Storm that means that rain is going to be a big time issue and part of the slowdown is that stationary front making it almost defense you see we stopped the clock at about midnight. It looks like it should make landfall somewhere close to Pascagoula Mississippi if it does by the way, make landfall in Mississippi as a cat to that's the strongest we've seen in. Mississippi. Since Katrina in two thousand five that looks like wrong place wrong time. Now, there are always multiple threats as a storm approaches. There are already dire storm surge projections. What worries you the most about Sally. Storm surges what loses most life and property and storms. So six to nine feet in some places others up to eleven. Let me break it all down for you get warnings all the way from eastern Louisiana through the Florida panhandle. Now, it breaks down and closer to the center of the storm. In the northeast quadrant, we call it the dirty side of the storm. That's where you'll pick up some of the hefty so. From Mobile Bay. Back through deloise pass Christiane that's where we're most concerned. Now we also have rainfall and I don't want anyone if they're inland to say, Oh, this is just a coastal storm. By no means, you get fifteen to twenty inches on top of that storm surge right at the coast. That's not good especially here in mobile but go up to Gumri or even Atlanta and you could see a half a foot arrange.

The Rise of the Ratty Muscle Cars

"Hello my friends and welcome back to another episode of talking Mo- part before we kick things off, I just wanted to announce that. In case you have not heard the build Mo- par project car has been chosen and we. The people have decided that the modern Hemi will be going into a nineteen sixty eight dodge DART superstock tribute car, so now Hemi pages is on the hunt for nineteen sixty eight dodge DART hardtop to use as the platform for the built. So if you or anyone you know is selling a nineteen sixty eight dodge DART. Please reach out to my friends over a Hemi pages. You can go to Henry Pages. Dot. Dot Com or even build. Mo-. Par Dot com and reach out to those guys and let him know what you got. This is going to be a really exciting build, and if you didn't get a chance to vote on the first round, be sure to vote in on the next rounds and also tell all your friends about this project. We need to blow this thing up. We need to get thousands. Hundreds of thousands hopefully, millions of people involved in this and just see what we can come up with as a community I'm sure we can cook up something crazy, so that should be really fun. Maybe you've got a moped project. Project you're building or maybe you just went out and bought yourself your I. Mo par. Maybe it's not a show car. Maybe it's a little ratty. That's what we're talking about here today. I WanNa talk about the rise of the ratty muscle cars, because it seems to me that in the past few years, these ratty muscle cars and radio trucks have blown up. They are huge right now and I think I have the answer as to why this is occurring, but you know. I think it's multifaceted, but I really liked the movement I think it's an awesome movement. I think. It opened some doors for people that would otherwise not be able. Able to get into a muscle car. I think it lowers the barrier for entry for people like myself that don't have a lot of money can't buy show winning car that can't buy a fully restored Khuda or something crazy like that, but maybe you found a ratty mo par in your local classifieds for a couple of grand that needed a little bit of work, but you could tow it home and get running and driving lickety-split and get it on the road. That is Iraqi muscle car, and that's what I like to see. I love to see these cars on the road and not rotting into the ground. I think it's awesome. So now that we're warmed up, let's get this show on the road. This week project car the week is actually a truck that was posted on Wednesday July twenty, second at three PM, and going with the theme of ratty muscle cars and ratty trucks I thought this was a perfect fit, and it also happens to be really cool and has a ton of potential and would make an excellent project vehicle for anybody that wants to get in the Mo- par game and doesn't have a lot of coin in their pocket, so let's get into the at. Nineteen Seventy Dodge D. One hundred short box, five, thousand, six, hundred ninety five dollars Columbia Falls Montana lowered six inches the right way twenty inch wheels out back in eighteen inch up front wheels and tires, brand, new three eighteen auto, call or text titles. Status is clean. All right folks what we have here is what appears to be a running driving nineteen seventy truck. And it's got a cool Patina on it. It is not a show truck by any means if you think you're going to get. Show quality paint, and no dense dings or bumps bruises. You are wrong now. In case you're new to the show. I am a huge fan of mope par trucks and especially the nineteen seventy two to nineteen eighty, because I do have seventy six myself but I really love the early swept lines, and they have a ton of potential, but the good thing about trucks. For some reason they look amazing when their team it out. Maybe it's just me and now don't get me wrong I. Do love a beautiful. Beautiful Show Truck I. Love Him. I think they're gorgeous. There's something about an old. You know for lack of a better term farm truck that I really like especially ones that are slightly customized. You know little lowered with some nice wheels. They just have a personality and its personality that I really liked the nice thing about this one is that runs drives so like many of the other project cars? We've talked about the past. You can go out and enjoy this thing while you work on it this. This thing is good to go scout brand, new wheels and tires on it, and you know what it runs and drives. It's got a three eighteen in it, so you can keep three eighteen, or you can upgrade. Get a modern. Hemi, you know five thousand this. You could probably get this trump for five grand,

Exploring The Canopy With 'TreeTop Barbie'

"Hey everybody matty Safai. Here was shortwave reporter. Emily Kwong today. We thought you might appreciate a little joy in your life especially now that's right here on short wave we want to bring you up. Does it explain what's happening with the corona virus but also episodes that feature other interesting science like this one from the very first week of shortwave. It's probably one of my favorites. Oh yeah mine too. It's got rain. Forests SLINGSHOTS A DECADE-LONG CONFLICT WITH BIG Barbie bad gets rope burn. Let's not love the rope? Burn Kwong it's clearly the roburt. These are the sacrifices you make manny right onto the show enjoy. You're listening to shortwave from. Npr One day this past summer I got to visit a rainforest. Okay that's licorice fern. That is the scientific name. Is Paula podium vulgarity? Ecologist NENAD CARNEY. This is called sledge. This is called Club Moss. It's actually very primitive Plant leaning has been studying in exploring ecosystems like this for thirty five years. Okay so that is called Bikram. That's another species of Moss. I like to call it pledging moss. Just because it's so soft and so please so much like a little pillow. Here's Flynn's this is recommend trim. There's like three four different species of MOSS RIGHT THERE. Couple other things about this rainforest. You're probably thinking rainforests so tropics now. We were in the Pacific Northwest Olympic National Forest in Washington state and it's called a temperate rainforest A. Rainforest because we get it's characterized by having a lot of rainfall there about one hundred twenty inches a brain a year. The other thing about this trip to the forest. Is that all these plants so see how soft these mosses are yes. Don't you just WanNa sleep on them? Yeah all of new weenies. Decades-long work. Okay I'M GONNA come up side by side with you. All of it is about wow sixty feet off the ground for many. This is awesome awesome. This is called the canopy pretty much everything above the forest floor all the way up to the tops of the trees. Come up with me now. Little Rope canopy. Here is a dizzying thicket of bright green leaves and Mosses and ferns all bathed in sunlight. And we knew very little about it because the canopy is literally called the last biotic frontier. It's been so poorly studied. It really aren't very many people who studied the canopy. Feel like when you say. The last biotic frontier should look off into the distance. Ready to the last biotic frontier so today on the show pioneering scientists Malini non Carney on the canopy plus a little later on in the episode weenies decades. Long fight to get more women into science. And how she found unlikely ally in Barbie. Yeah I thought it was weird too. It's not that we're the sticker up and you're listening to shortwave from NPR. Alright so let's back up down back on the ground in Olympic national forest. Malini told me that in the grand scheme of things canopy sciences. Actually PRETTY NEW. People have been studying forest for centuries but it's only been in the last twenty twenty five thirty years that people have actually climbed up into the forest canopy to understand the environment up in the tree tops. One of the hurdles for scientists was literally just figuring out how to get up to the tops of the trees so noelene a few friends figured out a way to adapt some mountain climbing techniques to get up into the canopy and that means shooting ropes into the trees. So I invented this thing called the master caster which is metal rod and we welded it so it has this little hole here for the line. Basically this master caster thing is part fishing. Rod Part slingshot. This looks like a garage sale. A fourteen year old boy's dream could both and and so with a fishing weight loaded into the slingshot. So I'm thinking right up there. Malini cast masterfully. You we set the ropes now on your weight on this got harnessed in step down and then started the long hard process of inching up the road. You're going to go into a crouch and lift your legs up. That's kind of like a caterpillar and then San exactly you. Well you know. I've got to kind of over. The course of her career researching canopies in the Pacific northwest as well as in the forest of Costa Rica. Malini has documented all kinds of things about the canopy sixty feet up this giant maple tree. She shows me one of the cooler ones. Just looking at the underside of these mosses like. There's this canopy soil Allowing Dig Samat over here. Malini peels back a thick fistful of Moss from the branch on the tree. Instead of bark we're looking at tightly packed bed of Brown dirt. I mean that has actual soil that is basically composed of the dead and decomposing. Moss's that live up here and there are like earthworms that live up. Here are a big round up exactly. It's called into canopy soil. Wow look at that. And it's a weird you know you hear smelling the soil smell. But you're you know you're up sixty feet above the forest floor. So it's it's this sort of whole world that the canopy creates they're living plants or mosses there ferns their soil and it's all kind of invertebrates that live here birds that forage for these invertebrates that live in the canopy soil. So it's like this microcosm this mini co system. That's going on kind of independent of the forest floor. But at the same time interacting the forest as a whole of course today canopies all over the world face threats from climate change from logging fire deforestation and a lot of work. Now is about trying to figure out what would happen. If we lost such a complex interconnected ecosystem. I think it's important for canopies to be as intact as possible. Because they do foster so much diversity that you can get seventy species of mosses on a single tree and each of those mosses sort of living life with its insects and invertebrates and supporting birds. And so it's just part of this sort of whole cycle of what makes a primary important. Here's another thing leany discovered when she was first getting started in canopy research. There were very few women. Scientists doing this kind of work and so she set out to change that this was. This was just a fabulous day. That happened in my lab forest. Canopy lab undergraduates worked there. My graduate students would work me and we were just kicking around by these. Look how could we make the forest canopy more meaningful to mattress other scientists but to regular people like how about young girls? They need encouragement. And somebody said. Well what about Barbie aright pause Barbie time because she was busy enough helping to basically create an entirely new field of scientific study in the early two? Thousands deleted decided. You know in her free time she would try to create market and get into the hands of little girls and boys everywhere treetop Barbie. What took iconic doll which is so symbolic of what young girls aspired to. What if we just put this shell around her? Which is a canopy biologist? So called Mattel the company that owns Barbie and then when I propose this idea they said no no no. We're not interested that has no meaning to us We make our own barbies. You know you can't do this. Forget it forget it. So that's when we said well. Why don't we just do it ourselves? And if Mattel's not going to take a couple of trips to goodwill later to get some recycled barbies with the Angela's making our top barbies. And I started bringing campy Barbie along with me and you know talking to my fellow scientists and saying look guys we not only have to do our good science we need to start encouraging people from outside science and and this is one way that we might do it trees are wonderful arenas for discovery this is Malini is two thousand nine tedtalk which by the way is a hugely nerve wracking thing for scientists. And you're hooked up to this hands-free Britney Spears Mike to give a talk. That will basically be your top. Google hit for life to stand on stage. Showing off a little plastic treetop Barbie. Should I really be spending time with this? Are PEOPLE GOING TO THINK? It's weird that me as a scientist and me as a woman scientist is a brown woman. Scientist is spending her time doing this. they're sort of risk. That goes along with that but I felt that the potential good that could come out of it of providing a real role model for a little girl. Who doesn't even know that that the canopy exists to study. You know like when I was a kid and so if that can happen then I think it's worth the risk what we do my students in my lab and is we buy barbies from goodwill and value village. We dress her enclosed that have been made by seamstresses and we send her out with a canopy handbook. And my feeling is thank you that we've taken this pop icon and we have just tweaked her a little bit to become ambassador who can carry the message that being a woman scientist studying treetops is actually a really great

Seed Starting Tips From Joe Lamp'l

"Back? Joe How. How are you Margaret? I'm fine trying to hang in. There was apprised. You have anything left in the after trial and all those damn see he's Giddy boy so you've been growing from seed confidently or at least I thought so for years and then you sort of went went wild this last year with these extra trials and I mean you know I would look at your instagram photos and videos and you were like in the jungle of seedlings and there was somehow however ever a method to the madness so tell us the truth. How many seedlings did you grow and explain sort of the mad scientist process? That went in prepare into preparing to do this course on sites and I think I'm as guilty as anybody when my exuberance in over enthusiastic nature takes over so I had I lost Canada. Pack had Margaret in each packet has a minimum of twenty five seats. I would say I was in the neighborhood of a couple thousand seedlings every round the trial. So about fifty. Two to fifty to sixty see trays in each trae had at least eighteen sales and some had seventy two cells so you can understand why. I'm a little delirious. I sort of lost count and lost in the jungle. But it's not a bad thing so we're their parts of the seeds starting says that you are particularly uh-huh determined to sort of get to the bottom of things that had maybe stymied you year after year that were just super confusing like in five different resources or different books or online sightsee five different recommendations. Were there yeah. We're there like certain things you were trying to figure out in particular couple in particular in one is certainly was the alighting lighting continuing to evolve. And you know with led grow lights is not just their led anymore it's what spectrum of led lights. Do you want. And how strong do you want it. And how how high do you hang it and how your plants respond and is it worth it to spend all extra money on a superpower. Led light if you're just growing seedlings to put outside six weeks later. I mean I had so many questions. And that's the thing I'm I'm such a curious gardener myself I just feel like I gotTa know everything and why not share it with the rest of the people. What's the crash test Gardner Alloy number of your speaking of light so we can start there so a number of years years ago Dr Thomas Borkman of Cornell. He's a crop physiologist who studies the effects of Environmental Stimuli on plant growth and their development particularly in vegetables and that's his whole career and he has like a laboratory in his specialty. Is You know vegetables. Vegetables seasonings like how it's physiology all G of how they grow. And how can we do better with them. And so forth and he advises you know the nursery and farm agriculture industries and. He told me that in the home seats starting environment. The number number one thing we can do to improve results and especially prevent leggy seedlings is to improve the light. You know that was and there. There's a lot of other factors that affect affect how seedlings develop But the light was the thing an and you know he was like Margaret. No you know think thank you even though the tell all your people even though the window sill looks bright. It's not right and tell them that. The old fluorescent Sir a lot less light than the T- fives saves and and now he would say and the led is but what did you end up kind of. Did you come to a conclusion about light because I mean clearly. I'm I'm on the fence. You can hear it in my voice you know. I'm not changing out. I T five fluorescence which I have mirrored. Would you sell reflective interior. The interior of the hood is reflective. So you get a little extra light. Yes do really well with those I did well with regular fluorescence for a million years or shop shop light for a million years before that but I don't know like where we're wh what did you try. And what do you feel about it because I know you had crazy pictures pictures of like. Is this your basement or where is this place that you do. All this I call it my seats starting room but it's just the I guess the breezeway from going going down in the basement out to the door my garden. So there's this about ten foot wide space in. It's probably about twenty five feet long. And so that's my my laboratory starting starting all these seed trays. And it's right outside my office and so the challenge for me is trying to get through that area without getting distracted and getting sucked into the world of watching seeds. GERMINATE ORNATE I'll stand there for ten minutes seen about a notice a seat a sealy move just because it's grown a little bit in those ten minutes that I was there right but to your question I did in fourteen different light trials and so I tried every type of not every type of light. There is there so many out there but I went from the classic old fashioned old school shop. Light right to stop lights with the led inserts to shop light led lights that all come together as one unit. So you can't change out the lights you get you get buried. Read the light spectrum of the forescent tubes I went from you know low Kelvin. At three thousand zero. Hi Kelvin. The sixty five hundred tests color temperatures I went to the led. Eddie lights and I went to the type that has just what appears to be a clear white light which is just what's called full spectrum. which is all the frequencies that sees and I did dual you'll band led's which is Focusing on the red and the blue which we now know plants respond best to from a vegetative standpoint so I try those against everything else and and then the the Grand Allie was I splurge for a really expensive. Led full spectrum girl like the cost three hundred dollars and it was two thousand watts. And I'm like wow. This is a big light and it really was. It was twenty eight inches wide and our long twenty eight twenty inches wide so it covered the whole shelf in so over over multiple trials. I put them all up against each other head to head and if you're asking for my conclusion it's fascinating because on the super expensive grow light it really does perform uniquely in. If you're trying to have things go to fruit or flower indoors you need a light like that right but if you were just trying to get ceiling caught along for four to six weeks whatever likes you have can work. What I learned Margaret is that you just have to learn how now your light works with the plant? You're going underneath them and learn how to position those lights over the plant and learn how many hours a day you need that. Have that light on in. How does that plant? Get the optimal amount of light coming out of what you have. So you don't necessarily need to go buy one you just need to understand better relationship between the light and the plant and had to get the most data both right and I. I just think I'm just like if we had some sound effects I would go ding Ding Ding. Ding you know. I'd love that answer right because because I again. I'm an old gardener. I and you know forty something years ago. I was using shop hood with a cool and a one cool light and one warm white eight fluorescent and I mean they hardly put out anything if you compare them to the sun outside on a day in May when seedlings would germinate themselves in nature As as Dr Borkman again at Cornell explained to me but but it's a lot of light if you know how to use it and the things that you have to know is how warm is what's being emitted from that a tube. So how close can you get because you WANNA get close but not so close that you toast the baby's cooking you know what I mean and the led's cooler are they. They don't have the heat commission is at so they're considered more efficient for the whatever wattage they are. They're considered more efficient because when the power is coming out of the white it's going to to place it's going it's going to put out the light and it's going to put out heat and so the less heat the more light and vice versa right. Led's do a better job of of being more efficient in that they're putting out more light but the thing about What we often misunderstand about those lights is that we think brighter is better in indepth plants perceive the same way we do but they don't you know they they respond completely differently so just because a light is brighter doesn't necessarily make it better right right so so again? I'm feeling happy with my. I don't know if they're you know. Five or seven year old I'm not talking about that. I've been running them for the obsessing bald necessarily for seven years nonstop because again I might use them for six weeks twelve hours a day right in once a year for that little period. Here you know because I'm overlapping a bunch of different crops. But that's it you know it's not I'm not doing a million things. I'm not doing as many fifty two trays times. A billion seeds. He's like you did. And obviously you change out the bulb when the ball is you have to read the instructions and see what the life of the bulb is your. Yeah yeah go ahead I was going to say I mean if you really wanted to geek out on that there. There's an instrument that you can get that measures that like quality around your plants. It's not for the everyday the day. See Starter who doesn't want to invest a minimum of one hundred fifty dollars but there are tools out there which I invested because I was determined to really measure the details tales right. And that's one way that you can do it. is those those light readings. Go down as the bulbs get older. And that's one indication but probably not the most practical things for people to do but using your is in in looking at how the plants respond will really give you lots of clues you might not be able to detect it in the perception of the brightness of that light to the human eye but the your plants plants will tell you they they. It's amazing how much they'll tell you if you just learn to communicate with

The Green and White Tin Grille That Inspired Me

"I've mentioned on this podcast that in addition to my project car dart not I also have a project truck a seventy six dodge d. one hundred and this is the story of a truck that I call low par by this portion of the episode. You probably already know that I call nineteen seventy to nineteen eighty dodge trucks tin grills. It's the affectionate name that was coined by my friend. Paul for these trucks and I've always liked him. But I never actually considered buying one for a project until I saw one at a car show. Oh that changed my mind entirely. It was the same month. That I started the Mope one hundred facebook page and I was at a good guys car show in Puyallup Washington when I saw a tin grill. That really really inspired me to get one for myself. I was going so these shows are so big that what I do. Typically unless something catches my eye I just focus on the Mo Mo par partaking pictures on sometimes talking owners so I was going Mo- part of Mo- par checking out the cars and taking pictures pictures when I saw a green and white tin grill. That had the coolest concept I had ever seen on an old dodge truck. What the owner did was he made? Aided a tribute to Mr norms grant spaulding dodge. And what I mean by that. Is He lettered this truck up to look like an old shop truck with weathered looking door or logos and other PATINA. Did you know weathered look lettering on the tailgate vendors in bed Another cool little detail was that he had the little grand spaulding style cartoon Ram on the Front of the fenders. So if you didn't know any better when you saw this truck you would think it was a legitimate truck. DOC from grand spaulding dodge so it looked like if Mr Norm had a shop truck or apart struck this is what he would drive for. This is what the parts runner would drive so for me. Being a big fan of Mr Norm and his work. I was absolutely blown away by this truck. It was so cool. I was just drooling over at taking pictures and just thinking to myself. Wow what an awesome idea and and it was executed so well the Patina on the lettering and just the truck as a whole was done very well and it remains one of my favorite trucks to this very day I briefly spoke with the owner and expressed my love for this truck to them and told them what an amazing you know. What an amazing build he accomplished? I actually thought it was a real Mr Norm truck like looking at it like you could have told me that. That's really really grand spaulding shop truck. I would have believed you. That's how good this was done. The owner of the truck. His name's Murray He's from British Columbia Canada. He came up with the concept and built the truck as a tribute to grant spaulding dodge and Mr Norm and let me just say that he absolutely nailed it. This truck was great. I would go as far as to say that. I've never been so affected by any other truck in my life all the trucks. I've seen that are really cool. This truck truck left the biggest impact on me. I I'm not just saying that. For dramatic effect. Everything about the truck was awesome and without oh getting into too much detail about it. Because I'm actually friends with Murray now and I plan on having him on a direct connections episode of this show so I what I will say is the truck was a beautiful two-tone J. Three citerne metallic green with white tastefully lowered with a strong little three Sixty v eight it had had twenty inch wheels and had some really cool other touches like accustomed front lip spoiler that was tuck nicely under the front bumper. which was actually custom on the front? Bumper was actually customized to the house to round Amber Marker Lights which I thought was a really cool detail because you know details like that. A lot of people would overlook but if you really know these trucks go that. That's pretty cool. Oh I've never seen that done before so that was pretty cool and I. I was never really a expert on these trucks. So the little things that stood out to somebody who was I was familiar with wasn't an expert but there are certain little things about the truck that were just standing out in at first looking at it I was like there's something about this truck that's completely different. And the more you looked data more little things you would see so he also had a rear bumper. The the nonstop cromer bumper from Aram charger and it was nicely. talked into the bed. which you know is another cool little detail the the details of the trucker just really cool and Murray actually even had a custom? Tim Dealer Sticker made that was weathered to match the rest of the PATINA. Look on the truck so on the on the tailgate on the corner the upper corner of the tailgate of this truck. It had a black can white grand spaulding dodge Chicago Illinois sticker and it was perfectly whether to look like it had been on this truck since the mid Seventies. I thought it was so cool. The truck is in one thousand nine hundred. Seventy Eight Dodge D. One hundred and when I saw it originally actually had a seventy two grill on it because sorry Murray if this is a big secret but good guys had a year cutoff. So in order to Seventy eight and at the time. They weren't leading cars that new into the show so he puts a seventy two grill on it and Walla. He's in so he snuck his way in. And that's okay that that show was better having that truck in it so you know if good guys ever gets word of that. Hey good guys relax okay. They actually they upped the year range. I'm sure it was because a lot of the GM guys you know the C ten guys and those g body guys. They're probably crying moaning about not being able to get their seat ends ends in and they're they're little. Gee Bodies in so now it's up to like eighty seven so if you have anything pre eighty seven you can take it to that show anyways. Let's get back to subject here. I've never seen another bill quite like it and I don't know if it's just because I'm a moped nostalgia guy or what. The charges just awesome. I'm actually say I'm GonNa Post more pictures of this truck but it's so cool. It deserves more views so be sure to check that out. I think I'M GONNA have to carve my own path and do my own thing with my truck but I will say that it will remain one of my favorite trucks to this day.

"Scale solving previously unsolvable business problems learn more it see three dot a I and from listeners like you who donate to this NPR station it's morning edition from NPR news I'm no well king and I'm Steve Inskeep Nikki Haley speaks bluntly she was serving as United Nations ambassador under president trump when a colleague suggested she was confused Haley responded with all due respect I don't get confused her new memoir is titled with all due respect and in it he only makes a notable claim her memoir says that other top officials in the trump administration tried to recruit Haley to block what they saw as the president's worst impulses and quote save the country Hayley sat down with Mary Louise Kelley of All Things Considered is in our studios good morning what is Haley saying about these colleagues who tried to block the pressure she says that two of them in particular rex to listen to then secretary of state and John Kelly the White House chief of staff at the time trying to recruit her in an effort to undermine president trump she told me they frame this as trying to save the country because they knew better than he did what was best for the country we have reached out to tell or something Kelly we have not at this hour heard back to our request for comment but she's framing this is going beyond offering your best advice to try to walk the president back from a bad decision as normal for staff people doing that this is a bad idea framing this as the warning and subverting what the president wanted to do well the people that she identifies as doing that especially tellers and Kelly are gone many of the people who were seen as pushing back hard against the president and limiting his worst impulses are gone and now the president faces an impeachment inquiry for the way that he demanded investigations in Ukraine someone's hand I think of that I asked him about that although it's obviously outside the scope of her book and and heard tenure at the U. N. as she says she's in touch with the president that she saw him last week talk to him I asked her view on the members of his administration the current members of his administration who are defying this White House directive in going in testifying in the impeachment inquiry and I also asters were the land on the president's behavior I want to play you actually this is the longest clip in a minute or so of which told me I go to the fax and what I know is from the transcript as well as what we have heard is did the president ask the Ukrainian president to look into the prosecutor in the investigate and and have an investigation on the vines yes he asked that do I think that is good I think it is not a good practice for us ever to ask a foreign country to investigate an American I don't but did the Ukrainians call for an investigation no did the president hold up aid he released to the aid as he should and so for that you know impeachments a serious issue and I just I don't see it as impeachable you're coming down on the side that this isn't behavior you would have condoned or agree with but you do not see it as an impeachable high crime and mystery well I I see it is that but also I just strongly believe that its air again of Congress to turn around and take this from the American people in an election year the American people should decide what they think is right and wrong for Congress our policy and and Schumer to sit there and say they are going to go and decide this for the American people it's just wrong and I think that you know we have to be able to give the facts to be as transparent as possible with the American people and let them decide on election day and Steve I pointed out to Nikki Haley that have those Democrats been there listening they would probably argue that they are doing the job they were elected to do by holding this impeachment in Iran we went from there can I note that she is criticizing and defending the president at the same time he's very good at that she walks quite a tight rope in our interview for example she criticized how president trump has handled Vladimir Putin of Russia she criticized the very recent decision by him to pull US troops back from the US Syrian border but she said look he's the president those are his decisions to make she said she's going to be out campaigning for him in twenty twenty inch so she is not running she'll be campaigning for trump and she told me their relationship is one of respect which prompted me to ask is your respect for Donald Trump the man or is it for the office of the president of the United States and I want you just heard the very top line for answer my loyalty and respect as to our country it was very interesting where her answer turned from there and I will say that there's more of that part of our conversation this afternoon on All Things Considered we'll be listening but let me ask what she thinks of another memoir of White House service of of administration service by this anonymous person who says there have been resisting the president and the administration her top line take to the anonymous book was that whoever wrote it should to voice their concerns directly to president trump and if they can persuade him and I can't live with it they should quit she also takes on one more explosive claim from that book which was that last year trumpets considered invoking the twenty Fifth Amendment to remove the president she says didn't happen I was talking to everybody in the cabinet I never heard a word it never even a whisper never came up they always thanks so much your welcome Mary Louise Kelley of All Things Considered giving us little tastes her interview with ambassador Nikki Haley about Hailey's new book which is called "Meeting people understood the ipod mini, and we think they're going to understand the MAC mini just as well. It's a new member of the Mack family. And this is what it looks like it's very very tiny. And it has a combo optical drive. A slot load combo optical drives. So you can not only play DVD's, but you can burn CD's as well inside it, and it's really beautiful. It's got a bunch of cool things to it. It's quiet stuff. The slot load. Combo drive. It's got fire wire and USB to a modem analog and digital video output Ethernet, and it's really tiny. So this is a very robust computer, but it's very very tiny. It was what Steve Jobs called BYOD KM, which sounds like a NASA abbreviation, but it's a bring your own display keyboard and mouse, we supply the computer use supply the rest. So you can take MAC, mini, and you can hook it up to let's say are twenty inch cinema. This what? Right, and keyboard and mouse, but the great thing about MAC mini is you can up to any industry standard display, keyboard and mouse. A lot of people already have this sway in a US. Keyboard mouse. And so that's MAC many women up to almost any industry. Standard is way ward. Or mouse, the idea here was pretty simple, right? You've got a home PC a Dell or HP or something and you want to switch to the MAC will use by this little at the time four hundred and ninety nine dollar MAC, unplug. All the stuff from Europe plugged the same display, keyboard a mouse right into your MAC, and you were up and running. It was kind of made for Switzers and four ninety nine was the cheapest MAC of all time. I remember that price point really blowing my mind when they announced how can how can amac be only five hundred bucks. And of course, you could upgrade and spend a lot more but starting at four ninety nine it was a big deal. And so it really was kind of brought into the world is this idea of yours going to switch from a PC or the MAC and sort of the lowest friction way possible, but it very quickly as well as we're talking about kind of group has that too..

"Show. I'm Bob SIMS. Thank you for tuning in this morning. Well, we have relatively good news on the American river opener for steelhead, I say relatively because a lot of us have lived in Sacramento or the surrounding area our whole lives. And remember when the American river was a river that people used to travel several hundred miles to fish for steelhead in winter. That's not so anymore. I don't know what has happened. A lot of things can happen. First of all the waters controlled by the bureau of reclamation, which is never a good thing. Because that's the last thing they care about is fish. However, there's been other problems with the hatchery there's been poor management up there over the years bad decisions by the department and everything. And then on top of all that we still have a decent year now. And then so it's hard to figure but this year. The week before we started getting an indication that a few steelhead were being coming into the river. Now for those of you that don't know the American river were Ansel Hoffman Parker to lower in the has Ansel Hoffman. There's power lines are go across your American river from that point all the way up is close to all fishing after October thirty first reopens on January first, and that's to protect the salmon spawning in the river bound so people don't go waiting around and weighed in the Samna ribs, and everything and just to let that subtle and let the steelhead come into the river and go up to the hatrick because a lot of these are hatchery fish and Ashworth or heading to hatchery. So the the lower river doesn't kick out a lot of fish this time of year. However, when the fish do come in you can get him on the way up, and that's what people. Have been doing before the first. And then after would we saw some some fresh fish four and five six pound fish, which rather winner run fish. And that's what you're looking for. And then there's always the half pounders, but the half pounders in the American this year have been a pretty good size. There's been a lot of eighteen to twenty inch fish, and let me tell you catch one of those. You're not disappointed at all all you can handle. But anyway, so now the fishing is open from those power lines up to the US Geological Survey gauging cable that goes across the American river just below the hatchery from that from that cable up to Nimbus dam is permanently closed. Now, it used to be a used to be able to fish up above the Hazel avenue bridge, but that's not the case anymore. So there we have the the scene and before the river open. It was crowded with people jammed into the low. Lower section. Grist mill and and all that area. River, Ben Parkin and all those to try to get an an migrating steelhead. Well, now that it's open and after the opener from what I understand it's not that crowded, and they're catching a few fish, and we will get a report on that this morning. Sounds like it's you know, we have this storm coming in. Now, the American river doesn't go up and down like the Smith river. But let me tell you, it is affected by fish, migrations. Because during these intense, low pressure anytime a storm moves in and a winter that triggers something inside a steelhead. And so while the water may not go up and down a lot. It will change color a little bit from tributaries coming in maybe even from Folsom if that gets muddied up, so there will be changes there, and that should only improve things. So we'll get our report today. And then we'll go on and keep a close eye on the American because you never can tell what is going to be a real good year. And you don't wanna miss it. If it is. So there you have it. Moving up the Sacramento river, the trout fishing up in a reading area pretty doggone good. Pretty doggone good. Not a lot of steelhead up there. The steel header mostly below battle creek. Because most of the steelhead go up battle creek to spawn at a lot of the Fishman aren't fishing down there because this is the time of year, you're is in row for the trout, and then you're gonna inadvertently hook salmon. Well, you don't wanna hook salmon one that season is closed. We need to protect the salmon. But if you're fishing up above and reading the fishing can be very very good for all those while rainbows up there. And we'll get a report on that different areas around the state have been experiencing not very good steelhead fishing up on the north coast the Smith and the check go people are really worried about those. Two rivers because we get minor storms. Bring those rivers up, and you know, as they're dropping news new runs a fish, come in from the ocean. Well, that's happened a few times, but the numbers of fish seemed to be way down. Now, there's all kinds of reasons for that one of them is there is a gravel think a couple of gravel operations going on right in the main stream of the Smith river, and that could affect the fish that spawn in the mainstream a lot of the big fish spawn and leave and they'll do that in the the river below the Jedidiah Smith state park. Well, I don't know if that's the case. But anything you do to disrupt that is not going to be good for steelhead. So the other coastal streams we'll get a report on the mad river that just came into shape last weekend. And nothing too. Nothing. No hoop and holler about. But at least some fish being caught there. But the best of the bunch in the north coast is the eel river and the main stem ill. Now, the south fork starting to come in. However with this storm coming in expect all those rivers to get blown out here in the next couple of days that might be what we're we're we really need to jumpstart the steelhead along the coast. So we will find out a MO. A lot more about steelhead after the storm subsides and the water's clear enough to fish. Lake Barry, so leg bury us is just great on black bass as is Shasta. We'll get a report on both those legs. The middle of winter and a kind of a different pattern a little bit of a different pattern. You know, there's going to be changes the way you catch fish and all these reservoirs, but not that much of a change in both places. You can catch a lot of fish, the average size Fisher Shasta is much larger than you're used to hearing about you know, Shasta is filled with those twelve and thirteen inch spotted bass will now the average sizes up around fourteen or fifteen now those Fisher getting deep, and there's a lot of fish bigger than that being caught. So it really makes it worthwhile at at berry Esa. The fish are all over the place from five to forty feet of water, which makes targeting them, very difficult. But anyway, we'll get a report of both areas and some observations on trout fishing at berry also a little trout fishing down at Don Pedro also little trout fishing at Comanche. And I was there a Monday during the. North win that was fun. But we caught fish there. We'll tell you how and quite a few boats kind of hit out up above the narrows to get out of the wind. And most people I've talked to had at least a few fish, even the north wind and stop the fish from biting slowed down a little bit. Fishing has been pretty good down in San Pablo bay, but watch out because when this storm comes into sturgeon fishing should really really take off the trinity steelhead pretty good Fisher. And a last week. We got a good report done Junction City. Those Fisher still there. We'll get a report rob Reiner's has been limited out on coca knees. Figured out. The winter Kokin e up at bullard's bar. We're going to get a report from him at the top of the six o'clock hour, then Gary Cohn who also was there yesterday. We're going to get a different report from Gary, and we'll kind of compare techniques. Okay. Because the limit there's ten fish and are getting their limits. There's a fishing in the city program today. Don, pag Anneli will join us talking about that also his trip to clearlake last week where they fish every year, they go over there with the live minnows. We'll get a report from CLYDE the old timer striper fishing adult. Of course, berry in just a couple of seconds. Then we'll talk ducks all that. Coming up in the next two hours and Forty-five minutes on the cave Piquet outdoor show. Thanks for being here..
