"Today. I'm going to do something a little different for this installment of your next dive normally tried to take you to a dive destination where we talk about the trip from a number of different perspectives. The travel the lodging the dive operator. Oh yeah the diving. Now we've been around the world. But today i'm going to focus on one particular dive that is almost in our backyard. It is one of the most iconic dives here in new england and that is the wreck of the chester. Polling off gloucester mass. The chester polling was a coastal tanker. That sank in a brutal storm on january tenth. Nineteen seventy seven. The tanker had just left everett massachusetts and was bound for newington new hampshire. That information is pretty consistent in the research but there is other conflicting information about where she had been. And what cargo she delivered for example some documentation said she had previously delivered kerosene to new jersey while others indicated that the heating oil was delivered to everett mass. I would suspect that delivery to everett mass to be more likely always interesting when you Doing research to get this type of inconsistency now the chester polling was bill in nineteen thirty four at mariners harbor new york by united dry docks incorporated it was originally in the plattsburgh sacconi somewhere along the line at also known as the mobile albany before getting renamed as the chester polling at the time of its sinking it was owned by the motor vessel polling brothers and that was number one inc. I wasn't able to find who was actually named after but obviously some member of the family. So that's a little bit of history about the ship now on january tenth. Nineteen seventy seven capital captain. Bert charles burgess was in command. The forecast for that day was for thirty five mile an hour winds along with fifteen to twenty foot seas. the chester polling chester. A polling left. Everett are left everett at six thirty. A m well as we all know. Forecast can be wrong. The winds built up to fifty miles per hour and to seize goddess highs. Thirty feet facing the mounting sees captain. Burge's tried to get more stability by adding more ballast but at ten thirty a m a thirty foot waves smashed into the tanker and broke it in half the captain called for abandoning the ship. Six of the seven members of the crew were saved. I believe it was the cook jail. Derosa from providence rhode island who perished the sir. The stern section of the chester polling came to rest off easter point gloucester originally in about seventy five feet of water with the bow section sinking about four miles off of eastern point in about one hundred ninety feet of water subsequent winter. Storms move the stern section to its present location about eight hundred yards off of eastern point about ninety five feet of water. I think the bottom might be a little bit deeper than that. However the stern section of the chester polling is what some folks call hollywood wreck sitting upright and is probably the most popular wreck dive off. Cape ann as that areas known. Now i- i dove the chester polling way back in july two thousand and five. It was my fortieth dive and a double dip on. The polling was part of my advanced open water class. These dyes would constitute my deep and wreck advanced. Open water dives. At that time. I was still diving in a seven. Millimeter wetsuit with the appropriate gloves and hood. I use the standard aluminum. Eighty tank with nighthawks. Thirty two. I can still remember the anxiety that had doing. The first real wreck dive in the northeast but once in the water what an amazing dive the visibility that day was thirty feet and my max step was at eighty five. Even though it was july the water temperature on iraq was fifty degrees. It was incredible to move along the deck and reach the mid mid ship section where. The tanker broken half absolutely mesmerizing but with an aluminum. Eighty you don't get much bottom time and after about fifteen minutes we headed back to the up line and after are appropriate safety. Stop we climb back aboard the boat and got ready to do it again. Total dive time was twenty six minutes the second dive that day was just as spectacular and pretty much the same profile. Let me just say in a wetsuit. It can get pretty chilly. I didn't go back to the chester polling until august. Two thousand nine and that was my last trip there. It was my two hundred and forty ninth dive but this time i did it in a dry suit and hope to get some good video of iraq. I still dove aluminum. Eighty the dive was just as i remembered and just as exciting visibility again was thirty feet. And my max. Depth was eighty two with and the bottom temperature. That day was forty eight degrees still very cold but so much better in a dry suit again however with an aluminum eighty. You just. Don't get much bottom time especially if your task loading like shooting video so my recommendation is that if you are planning to die the polling you might want to consider a little bit bigger tank something like a steal one hundred or going to doubles. I know that i wouldn't consider going back with anything less than a steel one hundred tank. How do you get to the chester polling back. Then we use cape and divers but they closed up several years ago and recently the dive boat cape and diver to was purchased by several guys from boston. An air now operating regularly chart regular charters again became an diverse to is a forty five foot. us coastguard registered dive vessel. It is spacious and right now with limited divers on board you get plenty of room to get ready and dive but you don't get a lot of but you don't get a lot of time because you don't have a lot of time to get ready because the is only a few minutes from the dock so be prepared one thing. Different about northeast wreck diving. Is that as a diver. You need to bring all your gear that includes tanks weights everything. It's not like diving at a resort. Don't get caught short by not being prepared with all your own stuff now. Here's an interesting element. That i discovered during my research. It appears that in nineteen sixties. The chester polling was length lengthened. By maybe twenty six or so feet. That doesn't sound like much. But at the time of her sinking her length with two hundred and eighty two feet so that lengthening was about ten percent of the original ship's length could this have been a contributing factor for the ship splitting in half. I wonder so if you happen to be in the area of cape ban in gloucester massachusetts. You might wanna look up cape and diver to and head out for a double dip on the chester a

Ernest Shackleton: Surviving Antarctica

"It's midnight on may fifth nineteen sixteen. Ernest shackleton squats at the helm of james cared trying to balance himself on the rocking boat. They've been at sea for eleven days. He knew the eight hundred mile. Crossing to south georgia. Island would be dangerous. But he's never seen anything as fierce as the drake passage. The winds have been coming at them at one hundred miles an hour. The waves are almost twenty feet tall each swell grabs the boat lifting at higher and higher for the boiling surf into the air. One moment they're surrounded by hills of water the next there on top of the world overlooking an endless seascape of dark grey rollers and white horses. And then they're hurtling back down. Below water crashes over the sides and sends a small crew into a frenzy to bail before the next one hits one way was so violent it ripped the boats anchor. Clear away shackleton marches wars lee struggling with the rudder trying to control the boat through the gusts and the snowfall is only. Compasses dead. Reckoning and the occasional glimpse of a star they both know if they boat off. Course they could miss south georgia entirely. And never be heard of again skipper. Altaic take the rudder. You get some sleep ex-boss maybe i'll lay down for an hour. Shackleton is left alone at the front of the boat. He watches the angry black clouds. Churn across the horizon and suddenly sees a silver light in the sky. Weather's clearing boys. And then he. Here's the familiar hiss. It's not a break in the clouds. It's the foaming crest of a wave. The biggest wave. He's seen in his life and it's heading straightforward.

Why are Pools on Cruise Ships so Small?

"When i stay in las vegas resort hotels would say five thousand guests have vast pools but not so on a ship of similar passenger numbers at best. The swimming pools on cruise ships are twenty foot by forty foot by five foot deep. And i found out there are three key reasons for that. First of all water is extremely heavy and the water in that modest poor alone ways around two hundred and fifty thousand pounds this making the ship really top heavy and challenging to sail and keep stable when you sailing the seas so size needs to be limited and then the pools have to be in the middle of the ship and dead center the deck to help with the balance the ones at the rear are always much much smaller. That's also why you always see hot tubs. Mirroring each other with one on both sides of the ship in exactly the same position again. It's the balance out the wait. Secondly the more weight at the top of the ship the more counterbalance weight has to be added to the base of the ship to keep it stable. This of course it's more space lower down and as more weight to the ship now to get around this problem. The old cruise liners from the forties fifties in the sixties like cunard's. Qe to they used to have the poor inside the ship and at the very bottom in whose case it was actually a roundabout the waterline. Nowadays passengers expect pools to be out in the sunlight and so they have to be at the top of the ship. This actually magnifies the risk of throwing the ship off balanced in rough away the especially when the water starts moving around. You have all that weight moving around. So that's also. Why pulls her often drained emptied when the seas get

"And so you know it has its pros and cons obviously terms of penalties and how much they are able to generate off but it really did feel like it was like clockwork face off and instantly the puck would be you know twenty feet in the air. Yeah that's kind of a new thing. I mean it's not that they haven't done it at all this year but to be honest they haven't really had the chances because the division was so bad like colorado and vegas just. It was a joke like no other than minnesota like minnesota was the middle team. They weren't the juggernaut that colorado vegas but they can at least give them a fight and then the rest of the division saint louis fell apart and three california teams are horrible and arizona had a bad year so it's like no. They didn't do that as often during the regular season but they also never played games. Where they they were having to escape their own zone it was just everything was so easy for them. They i mean they. They're winning per their points percentage. This year was like better than like up there with tampa than their all time. Best regular season. And it's not because vegas was an all time great team. It's because they're really good team in a division that had some really bad teams in this weird format where you got to play anaheim eight times. La eight times. San jose eight times a like two games in of all of that combined. So so yeah. It's it's that was a newer development. They didn't do nearly as much in the regular season. But i think it's also because they didn't have a team like the avalanche a few times and like you mentioned there were players missing in those games. So it's i think it's tough to tell if that was specifically a read from colorado and something. They thought they could exploit or if it's just that's kind of how they handle that situation. They just weren't put in that.

Small Trees With Bruce Crawford

"Hi bruce. I'm so glad we're gonna talk about this today. I've been going out and looking all the trees in my yard margaret. Yes no there's trees are one of those. I think often under appreciated plants in the landscape. Yes and again. Like i said in the introduction. You know suddenly there's a lot of like frau's e looking stuff that's going by the perennial layer and the lilac blooms are gone and whatever and i'm looking to the trees and i'm thinking oh this is going to be nice. And some of them came earlier already came and went but the blooms and so forth but anyway maybe we just start with a little. Like we're when i say garden sized trees or we say small trees. We don't mean like you know bonsai crew. Yeah no i i. Once worked for a gentleman who Was always talking about a small tree and he say dogwood everything was dogwood so i asked him what you want really want all over all over the place and then his wife chimp did and she said no no. That's the only tree that he knows. So you know. He's just looking for a tree that gets up to route twenty feet tall to maybe thirty feet and flowers and so. That's that's what he was looking for. It's it's interesting how you know. There's there's so many trees but again Many of them don't get out for the public to see your to to know that they exist

Are you planning to feed me today or you can stave off like headaches and burn out. I think purely through stopping your day and having those self care. Calibration moments with t- yeah. I definitely agree. Doesn't want to pause are definitely important. And one thing that i've noticed is i've been working from home for the last seven years and i have a really big shift in how my day flowed when i went from working in an office to working by myself at home. Most the time and a lot of the air listeners have made that shift as well because of the pandemic and there's a lot more time at home. How do you approach that kind of a work lifestyle where you're trying to. Let's say incorporate those boundaries and those habits but also realizing that your kitchen is twenty feet away where it used to be much further. How does that play out in terms of having these healthier rhythms and habits throughout the day. Well i think one big way is not having junk food at home. You know if there's temptation in front of you. It's going to be that much harder to avoid it and for me..

I mean how far through the door. Can i get a because it takes action to interact with the door. So stand up and downgrade standard action to walk to the door. That's your turn because you have to open the door as a move action that was in. This is just in my own brain. I was thinking it was like you know swinging kitchen door style. But it's an actual door all right mike all right Mike is just gonna full attack. Never all right. i can't leave. You lived there. I thought daily sure especially after that failed medicine. Check from Kuyper beginning like so. I would like to give a shout to sister for this enormous. D twenty dollars pros death checks and it worked. I think should also give a shout out to me. Because i want my gormley shirt. What does that do anything what what what what has to do it now. It's totally spoilers. Shouldn't say yeah that's a whole other show that's not ours so What you guys Full attack now for the first one Nineteen on the for twenty. Eight twenty eight k. That will hit and the second one. Is this seventy on the diaper twenty six. That also hits so that'll be twenty damage and twenty three damage to forty-three tony shit on stick. That's a lot okay. yeah Big hit you know. You guys got lucky because i totally forgot to do her turn last time and just was so caught up in the the drama of of the poison. So you got to return with her. Doing she got terrified. You're surrounded by a wall vest. Man i mean she's literally shaking and she. I mean it's understandable. I mean right now. Her back is to the ledge of the balcony. Hundreds of feet down. And there's three big burly house us should have stir us know. Because i thought about that because i was like push her off she probably i mean she's a fucking offer. Yes some kind of a on crystal something whatever i am going to go ahead and take her turn now and then i'll just move her in the turnover to here So for her turn. She is going to triple attack might. So we'll see how that works out. I feel like the You know bodyguards. There would bodyguard. Mike but that's fine. It's whatever guard joe ads. All right let me get these roles out here. All right so I know that to our that. One mrs with the seventeen and then i got a twenty in twenty five. Let me check to see if they have bodyguard. 'cause i would make is that on case. Ac to be on doesn't matter because none of them hit twenty four ninety five so they don't have bodyguard but they have something called guards protection which i'll use when if it happens but did not happen to sprint. So she tripled this with all. Three attacks is now first time so kuyper is going to Take a sigh of relief. Big sigh of relief. And because and plus adrenaline is just pumping right now. I mean shit. L. noam's died. It's going to get up. I mean he's actually. It's technically still stand up anyway. But it's going to jump jet right back over because right now. He's thinking to himself like you know as far as like felony. I mean she almost killed filling up so he he's he's about to get back into the fight here so he's going to go ahead and jump jets as far as he can To the curtain that is going to be make sure does can be twenty feet with the curtains open. So you're not impeded by the curto. So i could actually jump-jet a little bit further if i wanted to. Yep okay. if that's the case. I am going to jump jet right here. So kind of into the balcony area about ten feet to the north west of the best and non. That's right yeah and that's a movement action Wanna go ahead and try to just fire on without a trick tack all right and the way that i imagine this going. Is that like. He's doing it like while he's jumped. Jetting down you know. He's firings weapon out of her mandalorian styles. What you're saying yeah exactly Are still going to be a seventeen on the die Plus thirteen eight thirty thirty. Is it john. That's a dirty thirty from talking about. That is a dirty little cover but doesn't matter thirty will hit a okay. Okay that's going to be eleven damage. Alright and right it is now the best guards turn They are going to continue to try to attack with dhaka's so the first one going to miss with a seventeen second one will hit.

Poco balls or five great balls but apothecary attaining counter. If i needed drag absolutely hell yeah definitely definitely definitely definitely but it's like my antic help us help you. You know what i'm saying. Exactly make it worth our time. Make it definitely worth our time. Man i would love. This would be po- coins that would be fucking insane. That's all it would take for everybody. You'd see like twenty nine standing. Stop trying to scan it. I know i. But i really have. No true. rebuttal for this because gap if the reward sucked the rewards suck. That's the incentive the next one removing way points. This one was interesting. And i actually got some some really good feedback from our community on the discord call earlier because people are concerned that if you scan a polka stop the antic is gonna look at gps and say oh shit the the you know the the the town clock that they just scanned is supposed to be twenty feet down the road but they couldn't have that in there because it's in a different as to sell and now they're gonna know so they're gonna remove it. That's not the case. That's just not what's happening here Completely two different systems. But why do people think. Like that. And i found out a reason just today so apparently when a are scanning went live in polka mongo that same week there was like a pretty significant Update to the waste spot and wayfair system which caused a lot of things to shift in move in wayfarer including removal of bad stops and relocation of like change location requests. It all happened at the same time. So people thought that the things that had moved or have been removed were result of the scanning who went in actuality it just coincidentally happened at the same time frame so it made sense. That people were concerned with that. But it's not the case if you scan something even if it's fucking you know nowhere near where it should be. It's not going to be removed because of the scan it might be removed for another reason. It was reported whatever it may be but it won't be removed because of the scam. That's important so don't let that stop you as you can see here. I'm very pro. A are scanning. So i'm trying to sell you on why you should be doing this stuff okay. We'll sell me harder. The next one being a creeper by filming or being that. I definitely can't help you here either because this one is true. You're wa- like i was in the park the other day. And there's a wooden sign that says welcome to marine park and i'm walking laps around scanning it. You know what i mean. So it's like it. Is you know. Ken like what is he doing. No you say just a little mantle off the tree but did you have to jump off that tree more. Luckily you don't because you're you're huge. I mean for the listeners. Shawn's six five six six six five six five and with a wingspan ridiculous. Wingspan the rest of us. Mortals people who are shorter literally have to jump off of the branch and grabbed that mantle right. Yeah pretty much. I think he'd be trouble when he and this is. When you're saying twenty feet off the ground you're being Maybe under estimating that thinks thirty five thirty five and it's it's a straight drop to the ground. It is horrifying thing when somebody said this is what you do. I thought it. I thought when we were walking there and we were talking about that and he said we have to do. I thought he was joking. I there's no way out starts like this and it does. And that's and then you see the mantle and go. Well how do you get from the branches. Tiny and it's dead. And how do you do that. Where do words comes from? Find out in Washington, DC’s newly opened Planet Word museum

"The. Much anticipated planet word. Open today in. DC. Yes. Yes. Back in twenty seventeen DC mayor Muriel Bowser, and a team of advisers picks philanthropist and Friedman to restore the historic Franklin school building a gorgeous building. By the way, millions of dollars have gone into restoring the national historic landmark much of it. Friedman's own money to create a place where people can explore are evolving language. Now, that restoration didn't happen without a couple of shall we call them hiccups along the way city officials halted construction for quite some time after discovering. That the project's developer violated DC's strict historic preservation rules but all of that is wrapped up now in the museum is officially open to the public WMU senior editor gay. Bullard got an early look at the museum and he's here to take us on a little tour as you turn off K.. Street and walk into the courtyard of planet word you're showered in language. There's an art exhibit in which Willow Tree made of speakers plays a mix of languages from around the world. Inside the historic Franklin school building has been given a thirty five, million dollar restoration the preserved stare tiling wainscoting and a few other flourishes Nantou the building century and a half of life. But the displays are exceedingly high tech I up a twenty foot high wall of carved words brought to life through powerful projectors and narration. The tells the history of the English language. The exhibit invites you to say a word from the wall like smog or sport to get a quick etymology lessons on. Board. Shorts. Burns over. This caption about cannibalism mine database says that cannibalism is usually very serious, but sometimes, it can be funny to take something serious and pretend it is not serious. This is called dark humor in the library. Visitors can grab a book from the Shelf, set it on a table and be treated to an animation and narration explaining something about the text the technology can be dazzling but museum founder and Friedman says, it's in service of a larger purpose to reinvigorate excitement for literacy maybe with technology and with sort of the wow factor, we could make books and words and language sort of. Them and. With their imaginations captured visitors will think more about language for now the museum is working on virtual events for those who can't make an in person for those who can plan at word is open four free but you'll need to preregister for a time to get in admission is limited to twenty five people per hour.

Compact Nuclear Fusion Reactor Is ‘Very Likely to Work,’ Studies Suggest

"An article in the New York Times. And it says that the headline is compact nuclear fusion reactor is quote very likely to work studies suggest so and they give a couple examples. Of projects that are ongoing right now of people building nuclear fusion reactors, right. So the nuclear actors we have right now are fishing reactors and you gotTa have uranium and you know that creates a whole thing in the uranium market you must have uranium, right? That's the one thing we know how to how do inefficient reactor. And fuel is kind of expensive and it requires a lot of mining whereas the fuel for these fusion reactors is usually isotopes of hydrogen. So it's far more plentiful than uranium and it would generate fusion would generate less. Activity less waste and it's just less dangerous overall which is pretty cool. So. There have been significant hurdles to this people talked about it as kind of a pipedream many years ago that'll never happen, but but it's starting to happen. So there's this reactor called spark SPARC. It's being developed by researchers at MIT plus this spin off company like an MIT spinoff company of which there are many called Commonwealth fusion systems and the project is supposed to start next spring and take three or four years, which is like a really really short timetable i. mean there's been another project in southern France called it Er International Sirmo nuclear experimental reactor. It's been under construction since two thousand thirteen and it's it's actually not designed to actually generate electricity but it was expected to produce a fusion reaction by twenty, thirty five and I think they've poured like billions of dollars into that and and they've raised I think two, hundred million for this this spark project and they have a little picture. Little artist's rendering of what the reaction. Chamber look like and they show a little model of a human standing next to it and it's like I dunno makes the Reaction Chamber looks like it's about twenty feet tall and thirty feet wide. Whereas the the other thing is like the size of soccer field. Literally, they said they said, would be far smaller than the I. T. E. R. About the size of a tennis court compared with a soccer field. So. The that international project estimated to cost about twenty, two billion. So this could be really cold. This could if we can generate electricity with this hyper pundit fuel I, mean there's no shortage hydrogen oral, right? That's really cool and it. It makes an interesting point. If you read the work of an economist named Julian Simon he's always making this point about energy saying there may be a finite supply. Of crude oil when planet earth. Right there's there's probably a finance apply although we don't know that it is in constantly being generated deep in the bowels of the earth. But let's just say it's not let's say that's unlikely and there's a finite supply. So people are always predicting you know the end of the world we're going to run out of crude oil. Then what are we GONNA do? We gotTA DO SOMETHING And Simon's whole point was always that look. It's not the supply of the resource you're using it's the technology, the technology. Any given moment defines what the resources that you need, and if the resource changes from crude oil, which were digging way the hell down in the ground and using all this high pressure fracking technology and stuff, I? mean. That's a that's a massively expensive capital intensive thing. And of course, building a fusion reactor, probably would be Kaplan thing but then you know you build it and it. And I'm guessing that if you do it right, it'll electricity for at least decades if not a century or more and the fuel becomes not crude oil dug out of the ground, you know for lots of capital investment but hydrogen, which you don't have to dig out of the ground you know how they produce the hydrogen necessary I'm sure there's there's a lot more to this than a headline in the New York Times. But to me, it's a really cool example of this constant innovation that seems to trump so much that doesn't work in human society, right so much of the government meddling and downright foolishness, and you know we pollute the earth and we treat each other badly and and yet there are these these ongoing innovations that make life better for all of us.

The Amazon Formula To Sell 8-Figures & Beyond with Jeff Lieber

"Jeff say what's up to fire nation and share something interesting about yourself that most people don't know hey, what's up fire nation? Jeff Lieber and yeah let's see. I. Guess Back in two thousand fourteen kind of a funny story is I was working at nine to find nine to five job and what happened was is I was had that entrepreneurial bug I've been listening to podcasts like yours and other people. Knows you know looking at different business models and then I stumbled upon the Amazon business model at that time and I learned like the steps to source of product and all you're choosing what product to get started with and out of all the products in the world I was what would be the coolest sexiest product I could bragged my friends about and of all the products under the Sun I chose to buy a twenty foot. Container of Puppy pee pads or training dogs A. Matt and I spent almost like seventy percent of my life savings fifteen grand at the time on that container wired it to China had no idea the risks that were involved with that and luckily they did ship me a container of way too many puppy pads to sell and. Took me about a year to sell through that container. Thank goodness. It worked out and survived. So well, if they were on the market a few months ago I would have bought one Gaza we do have a a new puppy in our life is name as gas and we love him dearly and he has needed some pads as he's learned how to get to house train but I'm happy to say where we're past that stage for the most part now knock on wood but in fire. Nation as I shared in the introduction, we're talking about the Amazon formula to sell eight figures and beyond. So I mean you had that nine to five. Jeff. Back in two, thousand, fourteen, he decided to take the leap. So when exactly did you get started selling products on Amazon? I. Mean I know you said you start with a puppy pads move onto the next point from that and how did that experience actually lead you to starting turnkey product management? Yes. Of intention was not to start turnkey. Product management that came a few years later. So luckily, like I said that product ended up selling decently well, but I ended up launching additional pet products and then my sister had an idea for baby products brands. So we launched that and my friend's dad had an idea for with an awesome patented dog toy. So we launched on kickstarter and Bernard up on that and then So all of a sudden I was doing a ton of stuff and then had a few friends from college who Had Awesome products. They did you know sunglasses and wash on kickstarter and we're doing awesome on shop and sales channels like that. But they were struggling on Amazon and they saw me having success with Elaine product like bubby bads and they're like, why can't we do that? So I I ended up helping them and they just said, can you just manage it for us? Can you just do it what will pay you and I was like sure and so that was really the first consulting client. But. It was just a friend and it was fun. You know working with them and ended up growing them to over six figures in their first year and then they referred a friend and they referred a friend and now I had five clients as well in addition to all the brands. So needless to say I was. Almost envious of my previous nine to five job that I had quit because I couldn't do it all and I was like man, why did I even quit I'm like so stressed out in overwhelmed in managing way too much stuff and so I just said what what really would make me the happiest and what am I the best that and that was selling on Amazon. So what I did was decided to sell my stakes out of all may their companies in about nine month period and solely went in all in on turnkey product management gave it an official name and That was about three or four years ago and built a team hired me on my sister, my cousin, a bunch of great great people along the way, and now we're helping a lot of companies to scale their their businesses on Amazon seven and eight figures, and beyond

"Right. Now, if I look out my window, I, see a very Brown's guy. And I had to tell him now I mean I don't remember this ever when I was growing up I mean you'd hear about. Fires every once in a while on the on the news but it certainly in the last couple years has become a completely regular thing. So I can certainly understand your eagerness to to help solve this problem, solve ables about how you're GonNa do it what's your solvable for dealing with these fires? Many many millions of gallons of retardant. So used every year right the iconic red stuff you see being dropped from planes. And that's really only ever used reactively. So once a fire has started. Our main approach is trying to stop them before they start. Now one of the limitations that we're trying to address is if you want to go and pre treat areas where you know fires are going to start. One of the primary limitations of the current hardens that they don't stay where you put. A high wind or heavy do is enough to wash the retardants off the vegetation. So they stopped working off. So what we sought to do was to to not create a new retardant let's say 'cause we're using the same active fire retarding agent but instead tweaking the performance additives so that the retarded stays on the vegetation. Throughout the duration of the fire season. So you can spray one time in June. Let's say and have protection against fire starts. All the way through until the rainy season comes. So can you describe this stuff? What's it like if you touch it how does it feel? It's not quite a lot of people think of Jello and they think of a gel in it's not thick like that. It looks Kinda like cream really So what we developed in my lab improves the adherence. So more of what you spray actually sticks on the vegetation and it improves the durability. So it's really only once you get into the ratings season that the materials will wash away and simply biodegrade on the soil. Yeah. The evidence in I mean you know it works yes. So we did pilot scale studies to test ourselves and we tried to burn it It was actually. Kinda fun because you know we would do the experiments and and see the fire would not actually ignite even through extensive weathering. So we rain to half an inch on it and let it sit in the environment for six weeks. The treated grass, it wouldn't burn. So some of the folks that we're working with started just drawing funny faces in the grass with the with a torch because even if you took a torch to, it wouldn't ignite. Wow. Then we were able to step it up and actually do some full scale pilot studies in and treated a number of roadside segments in southern, California many of them are small but every one of these ignitions requires crews to go out and put him out. So they use a lot of resources that take a firefighter time that they could be spending doing things like controlled burns. And we reported that they were zero fires in the treated areas Eric, this targeted intervention, right? You don't need to treat the whole forest. You just go where the fires most likely to happen. Yeah. Exactly. I think that's An important misconception that I see a lot of places know we're not talking about treating the entire forest like you would with a controlled burn. We're talking about treating only right where the fires likely to start, and so if you envision a roadside where if you have a car that overheats and it pulls over into the grass, right next to the roadway or somebody throws a cigarette out of their window, it only lands right next. To the roadway, and so you only have to treat right there and what's beautiful about that is that let's say a twenty foot wide treatment protects all of the forest beyond it. Yeah and this cream that you're spraying is it is it safe for plants and trees and birds and animals and people I mean something about the look of that read stuff coming out of planes I always think I would not like to be underneath it. Yeah. So we when we were developing this, we specifically designed it to be safe. That was one of the the primary concerns because anything you're putting out in the environment, you want to be one hundred percent certain that it's safe and effective. We designed it using cellulose, adjust plant matter, and a thing called Colloidal Silica, which you can think of as Nanna sand. So it's just primarily sand and

One Priceless Lesson We Often Forget About Love and Life

"One priceless lesson we often forget about love and life by Mark Chernoff mark and Angel Dot Com. Everything, we need. Jose's wife Maria was born in a one bedroom stand alone home on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen Mexico. was a fine little home, but her father Oscar wanted a real house. So he worked two jobs a sixty hour week factory job, and then another twenty hours or so a week as carpenter. Oscar say fifty percent of his income for over a decade to build his family of four bedroom house like the ones in the better parts of town he put half his family savings and a low community bank and he talked the other half away in a safe he kept hidden on their property. On the morning Oscar plan to break ground on his family's new house, the local community bank shuttered stores just hours after law enforcement declared the bank was running an illegal and uninsured Ponzi scheme ninety percent of the deposits Oscar made were lost. Then the very next day. The little home was robbed at gun point in exchange for his family's safety Oscar for the rest of the money he had hidden in safe. In the short window of thirty six hours, the family lost a vast majority of their savings from years of hard work the night for the first time as Mother Olga watched Oscar cry. She approached Oscar with their infant daughter cradled and rocking in her arms and said, it's just money minister just a house. We've so much more than that. We have a truly loving home. Oscar looked at Olga, dried his eyes and nodded his head in agreement. He spent the rest of the night with his baby daughter holding her tight to his chest reminding himself that he might not be able to give his family, the house he dreamed of, but he can continue to give them a truly loving home. And for the nine years that followed Maria grew up in that small loving one bedroom home. After the first year, a sister Andrea joined her after the third year brother Roberto showing to the memories share of that time are truly heartwarming for example, everyday. Of Maria Early Grade School years she remembers her father coming home from work just before dinner giving her and her siblings, individual hugs and kisses, and then asking them to questions. More you loved. Do you have love in your heart? All three shoulder would nod their head smiling then he'd gather them all up in a big group. Hug and call out Metoo we are blessed. We have everything we need. With that house. Even. Though Oscar sincerely believed what he said to his children. He was still pursuing his dream of building a larger and more comfortable house for his family and nine years after losing all of their savings Oscar. Once again, saved enough money to begin building that new house twenty feet behind their little one bedroom home he started with framing out the foundation of the kitchen them Ria's mother had always quietly dreamed of. One Cement Block at a time paycheck by paycheck. Slowly, but steadily built a house he'd come. So close to building nearly a decade beforehand I a kitchen, a large family room and two bathrooms than a master bedroom bedrooms for each of the children and a nice covered front patio. In two thousand, two, win Jose Maria and start falling in love with her Oscar was still building that house. Soon. Thereafter, he put the last few finishing touches on it. The, entire family celebrated for weeks on end and Nowadays Oscar Olga still celebrate holidays and special occasions at the House with all three of their children and their children's families several times a year. But, the stories prizes lesson has nothing to do with that house. Just, a bonus the first day Jose met Marie his family. He noticed how sincerely loving and happy the whole family was. He praised Oscar for the beautiful family. He had asked him what the secret was. Oscar. Spent hours sharing interesting heartfelt stories about why his family was the luckiest one in the world. Never, shared all the details about how their house was built. In fact, after years of knowing Maria and her family traveling with them and even living with them for a short time, no one ever thought to tell Jose about how their family's house came to be. They ask questions about the construction few occasions and he received replies about the construction it until after Jose Maria got married and close on their own first house in Miami. Florida that Oscar took Jose for a long walk. He s does a about the details and Jose excitedly shared information about their new neighborhood in the House Oscar listened intently smiled and then finally he shared the story you've just heard. My daughter does not need a house Oscar concluded she needs a truly loving home and when you fill that home with children, your children will need exactly the same. If you that no matter how big or small your actual houses, your children will WanNa come home to you. The rest is just bonus. I know all of this because Jose ms one of my best friends and just this morning over coffee. He asked me where I was going to write about today. When I told him I hadn't yet decided. He smirked said Mama story for you, and then he proceeded to tell me the story I just told you.
