Impossible Burgers Will Keep Getting Cheaper, in Long-term Bid to Undercut Beef

"Let's say you go to the grocery store pickup something that looks and tastes like what you normally buy. But it's a little bit cheaper. Would you buy it sure you might say. But what if that item was so called fo meet. That could change things but impossible. Foods hopes it doesn't the meat. Alternative company has been very transparent about their long term plan undercut meat prices by slashing their own prices lower and lower and lower. It's an interesting move to make during a time when meat alternatives like the company's impossible burger actually increasing in demand. More people are moving away from meat products for health environmental or animal welfare reasons and covert outbreaks hit meat. Production facilities have subdued some demand for beef chicken and pork. So what's a meat lover to do. And maybe try and impossible burger which trust me on this one looks tastes a lot like an actual beefburger but for tried and true meat lovers. It can take a lot to put down the burger and pick up not burger as it were so impossible. Foods is hoping that prices can be the tipping point if they can make their prices lower than standard meet customers might be more willing to try burgers and even quote pork made from plants in january. The company cut its wholesale prices by about fifteen percent. Cnbc reported that the cuts brought the wholesale price of the impossible burger to six dollars and eighty cents per pound. Meanwhile the average wholesale price of beef patties as of january first was five dollars and thirty two cents per pound according to a us department of agriculture report with wholesale prices down impossible announced this month that grocery store prices would be slashed as well by around twenty percent. The suggested retail price for an impossible burger would drop to around five dollars and fifty or seven dollars for a twelve ounce package of ground Faked beef according to reuters priced per ounce that's similar to the average price of a sirloin steak so impossible foods is getting closer to their stated goal of quote undercutting the price of traditional ground beef from cows rival beyond meat inc is also trying to level up more down with the meat industry. Last summer they introduced a ten. Pack of patty's you could pick up at a target or walmart for just over a buck fifty per patty. Just in time for barbecue season beyond. It's beyond burger. That company also sells meatless sausages and ground. Beef crumbles for tacos. You know they're not real ground beef. It's the non-beef stuff. Those are products beyond has that impossible. Doesn't which may help draw. Suspicious meat eaters into the fray for now though despite the big plans it's still cheaper for consumers to walk into the grocery store and pick up real actual meat even with the phone meet price slashing. It would seem that undercutting the trillion dollar animal protein industry is a matter of time and text

It Looked Like Fire

"Today! We're sharing a story from two thousand fifteen. It contains references to police brutality. The plan was actually I was just going out there to be nosy. I wanted to see what you know. What a protest was looking live because I had called my brother. and. He said He said they're protesting. And you know I didn't know what a protest was while. I knew it was, but I have never seen one in person I've read about them in school. So I I, wanted to see one in person. This is Edward. Crawford on August eleventh two thousand fourteen just a few days after. Michael Brown was shot and killed by officer. Darren Wilson in Ferguson Missouri Edward Crawford onto his first protest. People angry, I, think signs. Here people chanting using profanity. I mean they were mad. You know the the motion was at all time high. Over well. There were people crying. I, don't know if those relatives or friends of my Brown. It was. It was it was different. It was something I never experienced in my life. That's how he described his first day of demonstrations when he went back out the next night. August twelfth. It was a different story. The people out there protesting. They were angry at the police and the police were angry at the people that were protesting. You know so it's like. Both sides were antagonizing each other. And you know the. They were out there to do their job. But the People In our I guess they were there to be hard. The police at some point, they started lining up with riot gear. What did that look like to you? Is that when things started to seem like scary or or the things are changing? Their looked like something you see on a movie They were very tactical. You know you can tell that they have been through. Very prestigious training. You know like the formation. Even when they move, you know they move on one. It seemed like they were. On one beat. If it if you you know if that's what you call, it I, don't know, but. It was organized. And they were chanting like a go home. This is not a lawful. Protest anymore. Please return home. And then there were people saying like this is home. This whole scene was well documented in the media at the time. The conflict between protesters and law enforcement reached fever pitch. And when the protesters refused to disperse, the police started firing at the crowd with rubber, bullets, wood pellets and tear gas canisters so when they shot the tear gas. Landing fairly close and the sound of I, don't. I'm pretty sure you haven't heard. Tear gas shot. It's a loud sounds like a grenade is going off when his shot. And It's it's when it's when his first shot it's. It's like real smoke in the sky. And then you can follow the smoke trail. You'll see where it lands and it landed. Fairly close to me. What did it look like when it landed? How big is it league? A spray paint can No, it's actually smaller like a twelve ounce soda can and it was smoking at the time it was the fire. What did it feel like when you picked it up? It was it was room temperature. It wasn't hot. It really didn't have A. Distinctive you know like to where if you touch you know that okay. This is not good. What did you do it? Throughout the way either just out of the way, or did you throw it? which way did you throw it? I really didn't aim for direction because I didn't have time to even think to where I was GONNA throw it.

Where to buy hand sanitiser as coronavirus spreads

"Worldwide because of coronavirus in Maryland at least five people have tested positive and one Washington DC visitor from Nigeria has been treated in a Maryland hospital blah blah goes on and on and on there's no vaccine since December when the outbreak of the disease began in China began to spread to other countries including the United States which has resulted in area retailers reporting a surge in sales of hand sanitizer cleaning agents and other items Grohl's market in Ruxton has had trouble keeping hand sanitizer Clorox wipes and with bleach and cans of milk in the stock quote I've never seen anything like it said assistant store manager Jeff major who has worked for the company for eighteen years Wednesday the store brought in two cases of beer L. hand sanitizer they sold out that day quote I think rubbing alcohol will be the next thing to go said general manager Tom Gilbert as he motioned towards a shelf missing the first two rows of merchandise fingers crossed we'll have hand sanitizer by March fifteenth he said are you noticing these sorts of things in your neighborhood are you noticing have you stocked up told you I went to buy toilet paper last week and there was no toilet paper at Costco none I went to a grocery store and they had toilet paper that wouldn't say they were fully stocked there about half stocked should have bought the whole thing eBay has banned the sale of hand sanitizer not because they don't want people to have hand sanitizer but because people are charging an arm and a leg I told you about how you can buy like a one of those small little pocket models for like twelve to seventeen dollars so there's opportunism capitalism always finds a way what are you noticing any of this stuff I'm just curious if it's how widespread it is because there was on social media over the weekend there were videos from Australia of all places of people literally fighting over toilet paper there's one mother daughter team fighting with another woman because the mother daughter team had a a shopping cart literally filled with toilet paper like overflowing we filled with toilet paper in fact in one area of the country they have put a limit on how much toilet paper you can buy because people were hoarding toilet paper is this just paranoid do you feel like you know the better safe than sorry Monaco is the way to go back to the sun story sandy Pierce spent the better part of Sunday searching for disinfectants preferably her trusty Lysol or Clorox her journey from big lots in Lutherville the CVS in harbor east in all she went to nine stores before calling it quits quote I wasn't going any further all this for a damn can of Lysol end quote piers said she hit the jackpot at Walgreens on York road in Timonium where she found a twelve ounce can of Lysol spray it was eighty dollars she exclaimed the private school teacher in realtor said she usually shops on Amazon but she said the supply shortages and price gouging forced her to embark upon her weekend quest I have noticed this I have seen it like even Amazon which stocks everything is out of hand sanitizer and they are selling second hand because you people don't know this but you can go online and sign up on Amazon and sell whatever you got on Amazon doesn't seem particularly useful for certain things most people don't go to Amazon for things that they usually go to eBay for so you're probably better off going to eBay but in general you can sell whatever you want and if you notice because my dad likes Hydroxycut keys I don't know why I don't know what the differences between the hydroxyzine oreo but he says the the oreos are no good and hydroxy loves hydroxide is always love hydroxyzine kid you just can't find it so I I found a money bag now if you're not looking if you don't shop around because you can pay the normal price for a package of cookies on Amazon you can also pay the exorbitant price for a pack of cookies on Amazon you just have to look at who's selling it and how much each you know how much it is per package and the size of package and all that sort of stuff the same is true for every product in there you can start your own company or just sell it out of your own house and decide to do you're going to charge fifty Bucks for a pack of toilet paper now if you're in the market for Sharman and you're not paying attention you just see all the search results there Sherman okay good I'm gonna click the Sherman added to my cart let's go check out I recommend you pay attention to what you click on online but people don't and it has happened mistakes have been made and you're screwed you bought it you lose the deal so you see all these things I went looking and I just out of curiosity I was looking for hand sanitizer and the hand sanitizer on Amazon was no different than the hand sanitizer on under eBay it was exorbitantly priced shall we say an eBay did not have or Amazon did not have any of their own you know like in stock sold by Amazon I'm looking at it right now let's see germ X. hand sanitizer regional travel size one point five ounces seven dollars twenty five cents that's what you're dealing with here so the paranoia the fear stoked by the media by people who don't know any better is having an impact will it have an impact on politics I don't know but it's definitely having an impact on people's behaviors there are people all over the world who are scared to death when the evidence to this point has shown not to be worth it not to be worthy of being scared to death being cautious absolutely being aware being alert yes no question about it washing your hands how disturbing is it that so many people need to be told to wash their hands in order for them to wash their hands the unit makes you want to never eat in a restaurant ever again if you need to be told to wash your hands it's just scary scary stuff says that the bank to the sun interview article hand sanitizer sales in the U. S. more than doubled in the four weeks ending February twenty nine compared to the same period a year ago according to market research firm Nielsen sales of thermometers spike spike fifty two point three percent during the same period sales of dried beans spiked nearly eighteen percent according to the Associated Press the disease is weighing on the minds of consumers at Grohl's market major re called and that an elderly customer require inquired earlier this week about the health of the stores Instacart

Stolen Lives: The Skelton Brothers

"On the day after Thanksgiving in two thousand ten ten years. Zuber's reported her Three young sons missing from her home in Miranshah Michigan. Her husband was supposed to bring the boys back to her on Friday morning but he never did. The couple had been living apart in plan to divorce Andrew. Nine Alexander. Seven and tanner just five years. Old had spent thanksgiving Thanksgiving Day with their father. John Skelton Win Tan. You tried to get them back the next morning. John told her that they were with a friend of his. John then turned up at a hospital. Following an apparent suicide attempt in the years since family and authorities have searched for the skeleton. Boys is without success. John Skeleton has refused to disclose their whereabouts. As time passes the chances that the boys will be found alive continued. Can you to dwindle today. The quiet end. We're discussing the details of the Skelton case and the possibilities of what happened to these three young boys in stolen lives. The skeleton brothers will go over family history and the timeline of events in an effort to better understand what happened and if anything can be done to bring these boys home. So we've got a Nice Michigan Beer for you today. From one of my favorite breweries. This is is K B S Espresso. KCBS stands for Kentucky Breakfast Stout and it's got coffee in it hence the Espresso. This beer is is an American imperial stout clocks in at twelve percent alcohol by volume. So you and I will be splitting our twelve ounce serving the beer is from founders. Brewers I said located in grand rapids. It's a black coloured beer little tiny tan head but did leave a little bit of lace on the side it is a glass and when you get the aroma. It's boom coffee just smacks you in the face. Ladda coffee little bit of chocolate taste. I follows the nose big hits of Espresso followed by some chocolate and the end of the SIP. You can get a little bit of Vanilla. This is a big bodied beer. Little bit on the dry side which is fine with me very nice beer. Let's open it up. Then you got it and off. We go to the quiet end where it's pretty quiet all right. That's descriptive descriptive. Well why don't you go ahead and start the story. I mean it's it's a difficult one it is and you would like to think that the kids are you're still around somehow and all their father has to do is tell us where they are exactly. That's the frustrating part. But I don't think they're around anymore. The skeleton family lived in Marinsky Michigan in two thousand ten and Miranshah small town populations about three thousand as located near. You're the Ohio border. The father John Skelton was raised in Jacksonville and he is thirty nine years old when his three sons went missing when he finished high school John joined the army a move several times he lived in Washington. DC worked at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda Maryland it also spent some time in Alaska and California and eventually he became a truck driver. He and Tania Nia married in two thousand and two actually Tan Ya. I know that doesn't seem right. But that's how she is said that she wants pronounced. Excuse me we'll start over John. Tanya married in two two thousand and two now they had both been married and divorced was previously tenuous first husband filed for divorce from her after she is charged with criminal the Middle Sexual conduct more on that later. According to many people including Tanya John knew about this conviction now John worked for several years and Tanya stayed home with the three kids according to tenure the problems in their marriage began after John Lewis is job job following a Dui yes so Tanya filed for divorce from John Skeleton Back in September of twenty ten before that attenuates say that their relationship was pretty good but Tang you did have history. Tanya had two older daughters from her previous marriage and and she did have a large support system of friends and family nearby but she was far from perfect years before her sons went missing before she even knew John Skeleton. TANU had sex with a fourteen year old boy and she was convicted of fourth degree. Criminal misconduct for this in the late. Nineteen he nineties. But it's believed they. John knew all about her past before he became involved with her but still he would end up using this as ammunition against Hanya claiming naming that she had been sexually abusing his sons when he abducted them. And that's where he took them. He wanted him out of the house right. That was his claim. It's very difficult to believe John. Skelton will find out because he has an ever changing narrative. Yes he does so in September of two thousand ten and John Thiel Tanya that he wanted to move the family to Florida. His parents still lived in Jacksonville where he had been born and had recently gone to his high school reunion there so he had as we said lost his job in Michigan after his Dui conviction and in Florida he told Tanya he could get a job. Bob and the boys could get to know his family now. Tanny didn't WanNa live in Florida and she also had that felony conviction on her record. which meant that? You'd have to fulfil oh specific requirements with the state of Michigan before she would be allowed to move. It was Monday September thirteenth. Twenty ten when John said that he he was leaving for work but that afternoon he signed the three boys out of school. The school called and left a message on Tanis home phone and the school schools secretary had called because she was confused. Tenure had brought the voice to school that morning and dropped off their medicines and lunches and everything but John came in that afternoon said that the family was going on a vacation to Florida and sign them all out of school early. So tenuous confused. She called John After after speaking with the school secretary but he was very vague claiming that he discussed with her taking a family trip to Florida and she had said she didn't want to go with them but Tanja said wait a minute. We talked about maybe moving to Florida and I was looking into it. There was no talk of a family vacation. So it's not really making sense. Let's not sure doesn't bear we've got two divergent reports here. So a friend of ten is called the Miranshah police and spoke with chief Larry weeks weeks offered to mediate between Tan. Yan John so he contacted John and he learned to John and the boys were still in Morandi. John had also set up a meeting with an attorney. This didn't make any sense at all right. And if you supposedly going on vacation in Florida why is he doing all this stuff. Exactly exactly. He's up to something joined told chief weeks at. He is taking the boys with him to see the beach and they were being Florida for three to four weeks so this just this wasn't right. Tanya s John he was taking the boys out of school when the school year had just begun then. He said that he would enroll them in school down there which was even even more confusing. I mean the entire situation was raising some red flags. If this was a vacation why would the boys be getting enrolled in the Florida schools. Also she knew. He couldn't enroll them without their birth certificates and she had those so she tried stalling him for time as her adult daughter's met with an attorney on her behalf and the attorney told her daughters that the only way for tenure to stop John from taking the boys to Florida would be for her to file for divorce divorce from him and ask for emergency custody of the children so things escalated quickly. Where the sure did could it would sound to me? Like he was planning Dan taken into Florida and staying Florida absolutely now. He's going to enroll in school and stuff so share. That's the worry very much so so at this point. John's been driving around town with the three boys. Tenuous stalling him and she said I'm going to look for the boys birth certificates so Johndroe back to the house. Once he's at the House tanny pretended to be looking for the birth certificates. You know she knew where they were and she was stalling until daughters could return with the legal paperwork and then an officer was prepared to serve John with the papers which would make it illegal for him to leave the stay with the kids. Yeah but coincidentally it ended up that both Tan Yan John had met with the same attorney. But because Tanya's daughters had met personally finally with the attorney and paid him before John did Tanisha was the one who retained his services so unfortunately the attorney's office called John and told told them that they couldn't keep their appointment with him because Tanya had hired him and this set John Off. I mean he was furious now he felt like she was trying to trick cam so John left the house angry of course but he did leave without tanner the youngest boy because tanner had come into the house and was kind of hiding behind behind Tania's legs so John Yelled at him to get in the car because his mother was lying to him but he just cried and didn't go to his father Tian her friend protected checked tanner from being taken by John but the two older boys Alexander and Andrew were outside playing and John was able to order the older two boys into his van Tangy told him he couldn't take the boys but he ignored her. The papers for custody were prepared. But you know John hadn't been served with them yet so. John sped out of the driveway in his van. With Alexander and Andrew tenuous sister happened to be walking up the street toward the House and John Nearly hitter hitter with van but fortunately she was able to jump out of his way but John Actually left just minutes before Tana's daughters arrived with the divorce papers in hand the end so John was able to escape Michigan with his two oldest boys and he drove all the way to Florida. The next day he allowed the boys to call their mother. It was her birthday. They actually and they told her that they were swimming. And staying at their daddies friend's House Hillary but ten. You didn't know who Hillary was. She was actually one one of John's friends from his class reunion which he had recently attended down in Florida and he talked to Tanya About Hillary after he'd returned from that trip so Tanya was able to find Hillary's address and contacted her attorney and he gave her papers which gave her exclusive. Custody of the voice Tania Tania's mother intangible. Two daughters drove to Jacksonville to pick up Alexander Andrew and to bring them back home so by that Friday they met with a sheriff's deputy to accompany them to Hillary's apartment complex and the deputy was able to serve papers to John and take custody the two boys the local district court and the sheriff's office were involved so they had to meet with the judge before they could return to Michigan with the boys. What a mess? Yes so they actually had to hang out in Florida for a bit. She's so the following Monday tanny and her mother hired an attorney in Florida and John also also hired an attorney so in front of the judge at the hearing. John immediately brought up tenuous previous conviction for having sex with a fourteen year old now. This was quite a shock for Tanya because John had never indicated any problem with her past admitted that he had known about tennis history since before they were married he had married her and had a family with her and had never before raised any issues about it. So the judge called the court back in Michigan and this is a court familiar with the scouting's uh-huh case and it was determined. The TANNIN would return to Michigan with her sons. Then was the crossed. The line in Michigan tanny would have full custody rights so finally things seemed to work out correctly and after returning to Michigan the boys were back with their mother. John asked Hanyu if there was any chance that they could could work things out and stay together now. Tanja would later say she felt she was really done with the marriage but she agreed to counseling in order to help with co-parenting the boys and keep John Happy so to keep John from becoming angry. She did pretend that she was still interested. In repairing the marriage to John they were working on the marriage when he was anxious for things to get back to the way they were but Tanja felt she'd never be able to trust John Again. She and her attorney made the decision that that it would appear more favourable though to judge if she allowed John to have some time with his kids so instead of maintaining the exclusive custody that she did have a right to you and keeping the boys away from their Father Kanye decided the best thing to do would be to allow him some time with them and she said at this point she really really didn't fear that John would take off with them again because when he'd done it before she'd followed him to Florida and brought them home so he should have known that she wasn't GonNa to let them get away with it again. I guess she also kind of rationalized that he wouldn't leave with them because she had kept him under the impression that they were going to get back together as a couple

Deaths related to binge-drinking on the rise, new studies show

"They are the feds are out with this new report looking at drinking how much drinking is our our Americans doing what is the drinking is leading to a rise in deaths that Americans like to drinking so they put up this report and all over all it says that America has a drinking problem I think we can all agree on that one and they say that each American is drinking just about two point three or two and a half gallons of alcohol a year now this is what the study says that works out to five hundred drinks or about nine a week well as you just pointed out to me that math is completely wrong but let's put that aside for a second Charlie let's talk about what this report is also talking about and the public health concerns as I talk to health leaders about this report and they say this really does point out health concerns let's put the matter aside for a second let's not worry about that let's talk about the report it says more than eighty eight thousand Americans die each year as a result of excessive drinking that number is doubled since nineteen ninety nine so over the last twenty years the number of alcoholic alcohol related deaths has doubled the death rate has risen fifty percent the the female death were paid bath death rate just women jumped eighty five percent you know we we see all these things in pop culture about mom's gonna Wilder we need mommy to that in part these help public health experts are telling me that's part of the rise but they say there's also underlying factors in America plus we're just getting better at and studying drinking in America that's what's in the more information we get the the more accurate these numbers are the highest alcohol at a rate alcohol related death rates for women were among those the ages of fifty five to seventy four which is kind of surprising to me I figured it'd be younger because younger women often do more binge drinking but this is the the the highest rate for deaths were women are fifty five to seventy four and of course the reason that we're all talking about this is because this week marks the one hundredth anniversary since the start of prohibition okay let's take on the federal government for just a second feel free to jump in here charity of you know better so they're saying two point three gallons is the average in a year yes the federal government let's just take it even further let's call it two and a half instead of two point three sure two and a half gallons is three hundred and twenty ounces a small beer is twelve ounces you're right twelve and three hundred and twenty and you're going to come up with twenty six twenty seven beers twenty six twenty seven beers that's not what they say it was something like five hundred drinks in a year yeah they said the math works out to nearly five hundred drinks or about nine a week now it's twenty six twenty seven that's a weekend in my backyard all right let's say you're in you're drinkin whiskey I was shocked I don't bring my with I don't call my whiskey shots like calling give me you know for your two fingers of whiskey but whatever this call it in each lasso whiskey is an ounce that would be three hundred were back at three hundred twenty ounces dads three hundred and twenty shots okay so the numbers also say that in this is that I'm quoting from the the report it says that works out to nearly five hundred drinks for about nine a week so let's take the nine a week number if you do nine a week nine times fifty two weeks is four hundred sixty eight the federal why am I not surprised that they can't do can do math and you want them to do your health care no I don't somebody might bad not me okay once again more evidence that the federal government has no idea what they're

How Bill Creelman Built Spindrift

"In two thousand nineteen the World Health Organization revised its guidelines for sugar intake. SUGAR IT turns out. It's actually worse for us than we thought. Too much can be deadly now. I say this by the way as I finish this delicious sugar cookie. My kids made last night anyway. The new guidelines now suggest adults should not consume more than twenty five grams of added sugar a day. Now think about this for a moment. A single twelve ounce can of Coca Cola has thirty nine grams of added sugar. That is a day and a half of sugar. A can of coke and if you go to the movies and get thirty two ounce cup you will burn through nearly five days if you're sugar allotment before you get to the credits so what to do. Well the obvious answer is drink less sugar which clearly is advice. Lots of people are taking because the last year the sparkling water industry hit an all all time high and sales nearly two and a half billion dollars according to Nielsen. And it's why the beverage out if your local supermarket is now jam packed with with Lacroix and Topa Chico bobbly Poland Springs and Waterloo in several other brands. And it's also big players like Coca Cola Pepsi and Nestle Sleet are all pushing into the sector. One of the fastest growing independent brands and sparkling water is called spin drift and unlike virtually every other bubbly water brand out. There spend drips. Water is as basic as it gets literally just a mixture of sparkling water and fresh squeezed juice which may may not sound all that innovative. But it's actually an incredibly challenging thing to make because fresh squeezed juice does not stay fresh forever and Spitzer's founder founder. Bill crewmen took years to figure out how to make it all work and along the way he struggled to find bottlers and distributors. Who would work with them but the story story of how he was inspired to create spin drift probably begins much much earlier back in his childhood bills? Parents chose to raise the family on a farm in in western Massachusetts. His Dad worked for the sporting goods company spalding. His mom wasn't home with the family and pretty much. All the food they ate was local. The fresh thing I remember most is just all of the food seem to come from our farmer or the farms around us. So you know we had. I just sugarhouse up the street from us. We had you know milked it was delivered with a huge head of cream on the top. You know unbiased tries we would make other from that. Ah I think key learning for me was just a very clear idea of where our food is coming from because it seemed to always be delivered from our neighbors abors or or just off of our own farm You know there was local unavailable and just to be clear. I mean we're talking about like the nineteen thirties or forties. I I believe at the time of this recording. You're forty five years old so this is like the eighties. This is not that long ago it really wasn't and that's what I mean. It was really a choice. And you know. I'm not sure what the message message was. We're supposed to take away from it. I would say my mom. She love this idea of being out in the woods and being on a farm and and surviving and off of nature and she was surrounded by friends felt the same way and we had almost no rules honestly we she had this philosophy. Severe that you know have fun. Do Your own thing in be adventurous. I think she's sort of thought of the farm is our playground are self expression and and I think the thing I remember that the farm land just kind of continued in all directions and farmers to the left and right in around us and even to this stay. This neighborhood and in Western mass is really still the same way it's virtually unchanged today. Do you remember how quiet it was at night. From like December to. Let's say the end of March because I'm imagining there was so much snow. It was absorbing all of the sound at night it was just silent. Maybe a little wind I I remember that really keenly and I actually think of that often because now you know in the suburbs herbs of Boston you that level of silence that type of silence. It was really hard to find. We would keep by firewood for the most part. We had a big woodstove when that fire would burn down nothing there was really no sound left in the house. Save your breathing or the shuffling of you. You know of a sibling was it. An old house would like old wooden floorboards. Yeah it was an old redman just where you imagine a Red Farmhouse Big Red Barn creaking floorboards floorboards for sure. So I guess you knew of someone got up during the night but other than that it was. It was completely silent so So that eventually your family moved off of that farm to the town of deerfield which is also in guessing western Massachusetts and you went to high school there and then to college in Washington. DC at Georgetown. When you when you got to college like when you're eighteen years old did you have any idea? What you you want to do with your life? Now I was kind of out of the sort of grasps of western Massachusetts and I was really starting to for the first time. I What I wanted to do professionally and I should mention that kind of in high school and then as I started college I was starting to work on the fishing boats off the Cape and islands of Cape Cod or or like nantucket? Martha's Vineyard is. Is that right. That's right and you know it was just it was just magical you know you're on abode all day. You're fishing for whatever you could catch. Stripe Pass in Blue Fish And so when I got to Georgetown I really really. I was working in the summers and then going to school during the year and I started to really solidify crystallize. You know what I thought I wanted to do. which was kind of try to figure out you know business? That would be interesting to me so as I was finishing up. Georgetown I took my coast card test. And then eventually I got my captains license right after graduation and Butleigh why you were Georgetown. You met somebody who became presumably became a girlfriend today. Your Wife Life Bray is is right. That's right yeah very lucky. I'm to meet my wife Harley while we are Georgetown and we started dating when we were nineteen uh-huh and so we've been together ever ever since I'm not sure she quite knew what she was getting into way back then but while I was at Georgetown. I took an entrepreneurship class in my senior year. She she got to see me Present my first business plan so I guess she had some sense devoid. She was getting into even in the nineties. And what was your business. Plan that you pitch to the class. It was called nantucket smoke house so the idea was taking smoke fish and striped bass and other things in creating a smoke house out on island we were then offer the products from all over the US turned out to luckily not an idea. We ended up pursuing Tom. But you know the Sivas planted for sure all right so so you you graduate From Georgetown in Nineteen ninety-six. And and what did you do. Where'd you go work? So the first thing I did was go back out to an antiquated and actually continue now with my captain's license in hand continue working on the on the fishing boats. You know I was probably my fifth year and so I went out there with an idea of kind of finishing that summer and then and then ultimately going out to the Pacific northwest to pursue the smoked food world or at least learn more about it and so my wife Harley was living in her girlfriend that time living in Seattle and we piled into her sir VW and drove up the coast and basically just started hitting smoke houses and asking them. You know what the industry was like today. Play kit today. Not like it would they recommend going into it and I'll never I'll never forget finishing a tour and the guy who is leading me on the tour pulled me aside and said I mean do you favor never get into this business fish. It's fire you know. It is a shrinking industry. You know it's nothing we would recommend and was that enough to convince you it was at least enough for me to second guess it and so I am incredibly grateful for that person's advice for sure and the the business idea that ended up kind of coming out of it was company called Nantucket Harvest and untuckit harvest offered smoked food items That were already being produced. Even though it ultimately long-term not terribly successful. It was much better than where we would land right okay. So you're so you decide I'm going to go back to Massachusetts. I'm going to start a business where I basically. What like source food food from nantucket and create like a mail order business? That's right who is mid mid nineties Nantucket at all these really interesting producers serves that had gotten to know some of them over the years What were they making or what? What did they produce? Yes so they had you know it's thirty miles off shore so it kind of has some. I'm really interesting. Unique products only only really only available out there. There was already a a smoke. Bluefish Pate Really Beach Palm Jelly really interesting Zhang Jellies Bay scallops. You know lobsters ice cream so our thesis was will people love these in the summer. I bet they would love to buy him. mm-hmm the other nine months of the year and we wanted to provide them with a solution to do

The Impossible Burger Is Coming to a Shop Near You

"We have some plant-based news to start what we do. We do it's happening. The impossible burger is making its way to a store near you. Yes that's true. It's going to be in the stores so here's the deal at debuted in southern California last weekend at Elson around. It's like our took a higher end store. I guess but then it's GonNa be in all other stores after that and then it's going to debut on the East Coast Post in just a few days and then as the year goes on it will gradually be released throughout the rest of the country and they're sold in twelve ounce packages for eight ninety nine and we have a package right here at least is holding. I'm squeezing it so this is impossible burger made from plants and by the way everything here today is we're calling plant based but it's it's all things that are will fit in with a Vegan Diet we're not saying every single thing we're trying as only made out of plants so hopefully you guys will forgive her for that but no animal mall no animal byproducts exactly no animals were harmed if I didn't no you're holding a package of the impossible murder packed the meat ground beef it. Does it look easy as my mom would say chop meet. Jamie was like what are you. What's chummy? It's such a New York thing but it does it really looks like ground beef the thing about impossible the impossible burger her and you know a lot of these substitutes. They're high in fat. Your high in calories like sometimes higher in saturated fat than regular beef especially extra extra lean ground beef. It's so strange it is. I don't know what what if my eyes weren't so bad. I'd be able to tell you the tagline off flavor. No Cow so one third of this twelve ounce package is two hundred forty calories fourteen grams of fat and eight of that saturated so it's not even like that's a terrible. We'll stop at like what's in it if it's plan paced like where's all the fat coming from like you. Can you tell okay so the ingredients yep. The ingredients are soy protein concentrate coconut oil sunflower oil natural flavors potato protein. It looks to me like it's the oils so a lot of oils. That's what's GonNa make it taste rich like. Is this the one that bleeds or is it the other one. There's there's what's the other on call them on C. on exactly beyond meat. I like all of them like they all taste good to me but I've been eating like fake soy meat for a million years I thought was the originator Morningstar farms. I love all that stuff. Through this stuff. I guess is more popular because they're like okay. Infuse it with fat make it tastes rich and and people will embrace it which they have and like now the thing that's all the rage is the impossible walker which we are going to be taste testing. You excited. I'm very excited excited. I told you I had my first dodger dog the other day so this is like a big

It's Officially the Best Time of the Year to Cook

"Talking about the fall playbook from the September issue of Bon appetite and really should have been the whole Lsu but we'll talk about the issue with the issue Chris. Do you remember when this story is being conceived and you you and Andy and I were talking about what this story could or should be. What was what was the mission we sort of decide upon we wanted to get into sort of get people into the mindset of like okay like summer's over but that's not necessarily a bad thing like we want people to be excited to get back into the kitchen and you know just give them like some recipes that that are kind of simple uncomplicated whether it's something that cooks quickly but it's kind of hands off you know or some combination of Maimi? It's longer cook time but I'd like with zero. Prep just give people an excuse to feel great about getting cooking again getting back in the kitchen. A one phrase that I have bandied about is the Shen situational cooking because I think that dictates a lot about what we make when is it. Is it Sunday when you've got all day to sort of braise something in your job in Tuesday night when you wanna eat something good but it's six twenty eight. PM and you haven't started cooking yet. That's a lot of ways we sort of approached these recipes of which seven recipes Andy. I don't believe so one of the recipes got cut so yeah which one guy cut. I don't understand got cut it. It was it was designated to become a digital exclusive yeah yeah. It's like the right part which one was it. Was the lentil bowl well. I don't think it was called that I think it was like it was like girls wasn't with with the Spice Chili oil and then it was just like I am just going to call it a lentil bowl for now 'cause it got cut. I think we realized that people only want to work so hard on a lentil bowl. That's true and it took a little bit of doing. I don't know I do get excited like that. When there's fall there's a little bit of bite in the air and summer's over in summer is great. Go to the beach grilling all that but it's nice actually just get serious about wanting to be in the kitchen. Point your cast iron skillet point out your Dutch oven getting your tongs and cooking again yeah and having the patience to really think about what ingredients I mean th you should be thinking about ingredients around but really putting the time in for cooking the dish you wanna be cooking the first recipe this. This is Morocco recipe right now. Oh yes that's very interesting interesting. He's got all this pasta. So of course I wanna eat this just by the title Creamy Pasta with with crispy mushrooms. Yes I wanted to come up with the positive I've done so many over the last. I think almost four years here but I don't think I've really done a creamy creamy pasta dish with mushrooms. I love Pasta Love Mushrooms. I was like the smick sense and it feels very fall and I thought this could come together fairly quickly and that was my hero and then we do a lot of creamy pasta from the standpoint of Oh you know glossy emulsified butter. Oh yes but I was like Andy. Just put cream in the pasta. You know how you make creamy pasta sometimes if the move fast and and you know not break things like just put cream in the pasta and my life I started twitching when he said this heavy cream andy make it delicious. I don't know how many recipes I have have that call for every cream but in this case I did go for it and it really did make a difference. It just made it easy. It was like a nice little thing crutch to the US also when you blend heavy cream and then throw some parmesan cheese it is so good. Is that the problem with Italy one of those again on the streets as the pastas that you can't stop eating. It's like you don't want to see a calorie counter going but it's amazing sorry so this one. Mike you can use either just simple criminally mushrooms. You can find any market or you can go to the farmer's. There's market and splurge on a lot of interesting wild mushrooms and re introduced different flavors and textures guess a question. I always have when I love a mushroom positive because it feels it was very autumnal. How do you cook the mushrooms themselves so they get Nice Brown and caramelized and Krispy before you know blending with the cream and all that because I sometimes I get Kinda just squeaky and squishy and you know what techniques so sometimes you if they're using a lot of motions Russians in this case we're using a pound of mushrooms. You really want to do it in batches. Most likely I like tearing my mushrooms up a lot of us do that and you end up getting these kind of crackly pieces and so they get Brown because also when you cut him up the end up looking like canned mushroom sometimes they just don't look right I kind of tearing them to their natural shape and and then I took them in oil in this case extra virgin olive oil and then I just go pretty hard undisturbed until the brown around on the edges to they develop a crust. Yes over yeah. Give it a little bit of a toss. I don't even know if I really flip flipping each individual mushroom. If you work in the line my new restaurant shaking I think I read somewhere and wait a minute petite mushrooms to develop a nice caramelized crust you. I don't add salt till the very end. Assault draws out too much moisture. Is that correct yes. I don't see my mushrooms until both sides are deeply brown and crispy see around the edges. Ah also some shallots. I love that smell when you shall. It's there's no sort of introduce a pretty classic yeah and then you get all the mushrooms on add the shallots shallots You're not trying to get too much earlier softening them and then wall while you're doing that. You have the mushrooms ready to go. There cooked the shelter going. you cook your pasta and you're going to cook it. Just under all dented like two minutes before for and then I add the pasta the heavy cream and let that go until the cream has reduced lightly and then I add a bit of zest and juice from half Philemon ooh. There's a lot of the cream is so heavy who you have creaming of butter and your Parmesan yeah so there's quite a bit affect and you have extra virgin olive oil so you need a bit of zest and juice. You need that acidity kind of brightened things up and bring everything back to life again. Yeah couple of tips here love the pulling the mushrooms apart pushing the mushrooms by hand tearing the much mushroom by hand I love not salt in the mushroom still after they're nice and Brown then thirdly what you guys in the test kitchen seem to love to do is use a Dutch of in when you're sort of like tossing pasta with whether it's mushrooms or any sort of saw that you that is high enough side toss and swirl and get everything inc.. It's it's such a good little insurance policy for being able to really work the pasta around and like let's face it even just twelve ounces nevermind a pound of Pasta in the largest skillet you own. It's it's fine to work. Bring it over to the sink to try to toss pasta over that so that you don't get all of your stove okay. I'm going to bet that this is all right. Let me say what is the next one. It's called Sweden saucy pork chops. I'm GonNa Citrus Morocco too good. It's kind of a dad families or not honey over to pick up. Some pork chops underway right. Oh my God all right. Wow that's how you really see me. Hunched over like the plate of pork chops like not talking. Can anybody on a Tuesday this to cope we buy some good bone in rib pork chops but you call for one inch thick one so they cook really quickly quickly but so you don't have to overcook them you add some sugar to sort of Maryland Dryer up. Whatever so we get a quicker caramelized cross yeah just just salt in a sprinkle of sugar on the pork chops because the thing is pork chops an in a perfect world we all be buying like pastor raise heritage breed pork and it would be super fatty and rich and unctuous? You know just whatever you do to it but this is kind of optimize to work with any pork chop. This is like you know and this is a a method of cooking them that really mitigates that tendency to have them dry out and get like really kind of like cardboard so adding that little bit of sugar to the outside means. You'RE GONNA get crazy amounts of color within just a few minutes. You don't need to overcook that first side in order to get the color you want and that is like that is like the death of like the one inch inch thick pork chop. We went back and forth about what pork chop to us because we'll all of a sudden you want like a much fatter one in order to get got like a really great crust without using sugar but this just like. Let's get that really quickly and then you're really just you're. You're just you're picking that second. Side very briefly can interject with any piece of protein. One side is always going to get more done than the other in that side gets the beautiful cross that society serve up right. It's what's going on underneath doesn't matter yeah exactly it's like the old sort of old school. French like approach which is like you have the presentation side and then like who cares what the second side it's super yummy super easy pan sauce with some red wine vinegar that sort of introduces acids and capers butter and then disorder garlic and in the water. It's Rosemary and it all together. Yep and you serve it and it probably start to finish. How is this dish. Take fifteen minutes if that if that yeah I mean twelve twelve so yeah. It's it's great. You know like that kind of like that wet cook. You know kind of environment. Just like means like nothing's going to dry out doing when people see like some like pants author very impressive fastest like no that's just like cooking the pan and thrown much ingredients speaking of hands when I saw the photo for this sheet Pan Potato Hash with fixings and it was beautiful she he tray of these beautifully shingle potatoes at our oven. Crisper looks like homemade potato chips. I was like Oh my God that look so good. The question is which one of you develop this Chris Morocco. Wow okay okay yeah. That was me at this is this is. Andy doesn't do brunch brought. She's not doing potato doesn't brunch. Andes Andes Andy's protein smoothie. He's busy working out on Sunday morning onto this again. This is a very bad move like making brunch where the family well it look potatoes you can you can make them as complicated as he want where you can make them as simple as you want and this is just a great way to take a lot of potatoes and make them unbelievably. Lee crispy Jammie Chewy. Just everything you want so big russet potatoes. You don't even know thinly sliced. D Use a a mandolin it. Can you slice slice by hand because honestly the irregularity like it's going to be totally. I liked that because in some get extra crispy tender and that's fine in the oven these you're going to be in the oven for close to an hour you know were and you're. GonNa get some that are like crazy. Crisp like potato chip and others are just going to be no more in the center. They're going to be a little bit like Kinda. Chewy Jab ultra tender so I- similarly toss him with all spread them out on a sheet trays by two and a half pounds four twenty five forty to fifty minutes and an almost that's when you take it out almost with goes tray of nachos chose. It's like it's some. It's like the lovechild of like palm. Anna clarified butter like beautiful kind of fanned out sort of potatoes I did. I did this video with molly. Baas mayor. Would we are talking about cooking school in the next video video coming out on what is it on. It's on the Broccoli as a people are talking about urine. "So I think we should jump back into go back over some of those supplements that car was talking about when we came back from break. So one of the first ones we were talking about is vitamin c and how much bite him in. See? Should we be taking? Well, we recommend at least a thousand milligrams a day. It's nice easy dose. Yep. The second one is zinc. It's mineral that. I think it's seventy five percent of the population or something like that is three out of four people are low in zinc, not getting enough from their food. Right. So we really recommend for municipal system to take thirty to fifty milligrams of zinc at bedtime. It's perfect. It's easy. Not have to take it three times a day. 'cause you know, just take it right up at time. The third one we want to talk about is in car mentioned it earlier is that vitamin d. So how much fight him? Indeed. Should you take? Well, we recommend taking about two thousand four thousand I use daily, and you wanna make sure you take that with food because. Is it will it's fat soluble. So it's better metabolize with some food. Excellent. And then the next one this is also another fat soluble vitamin, and so you wanna take this next one with food as well. It's called cod liver oil people like, oh, yeah. Chickenfeed in Colorado off Moore oblast today. You know, we're getting back to what our grandparents were doing that's percents when we hear about these things right bone broth with chicken feed taking cod liver oil. But I think our grandparents were onto something. I think they were you know, a couple of teaspoons of cod liver oil is going to give you a little bit more vitamin d probably still need a separate vitamin d. Yeah, I am. But it does have a lot of vitamin A for immunity system. And also, some great fish oil in there for sure and the other one that we would suggest is doing that bifida balance or a good probiotic if you and we recommend taking either a capsule or powder form, whichever is easiest for you to be more compliant with, but it helps boost that immune system, and you know, we usually say take at least three capsules a day in probiotics are always best taken before your meal. Maybe ten to fifteen minutes before you. Eat on an empty stomach, and that will just one other easy way to increase that gut health and immune system. And then lastly, we have been talking about a product called wellness formula. It's by source naturals. We're not going to talk about all the ingredients because there's quite a few. But there's a lot of there's some herbs some vitamins all immune boosting ingredients. And I know this might sound like a lot. But if you are feeling like you're coming down with something you're gonna wanna take six capsules per day. Yeah. But it really really works. That's what kept my husband, and I from catching what my daughter had this past week. So we didn't have to miss work. Right. Exactly. So it's a great great thing to have in your cupboard, just as Kara. Yeah. I learned my lesson past years Ono, we're coming out with something and it's nine pm. Yeah. And we don't have any immune boosters in the cupboard. Right. So now, what do we do? So you stop. Up. Everybody stock up everybody stock up on your bone broth for the season here. Make a make a good pot tonight. And you like we were talking about throughout the whole show is that you wanna have about that twelve ounces a day of some good healthy bone. Broth that's going to you know, help that immune system. Help your skin and joint health. What else Carl your electrolytes all that? Yeah. Oh my gosh. The benefits are just they keep going. They do. And you know, we talk about drinking bone broth, but you can make it into a soup as well.

"For my personal experience, like when we go, we used to do kids menus, like even at steak houses than they would give. These are boys these little six ounce steaks. You know, when they're used to eating like, you know ten to twelve ounce steaks at home all the time. And we had to start doing like two entrees, two kids entrees, then we just were like, screw this, my boys. That's it. You know, they're eating from the adult many. But the big thing that that I hear all the time is that our kids are picky, you know, and our boys were super picky, you know, and and there were things that they wouldn't eat. And there's definitely there has to be a resetting of the palette, and it takes time like it end. N. n in phases there, certain phases, like for instance, the boys, they wouldn't even try lillies chocolate bars. And then you know, then after a few months of being really strict with Kita, which we didn't really commit to keep with them until August of last year. So for example, when you win, they weren't eating these things where they just not eating snacks and desserts or HUD. You approach that situation specifically like you. You have like you have a really small list of acceptable foods like you try to figure out what they like. And so for a short period of time, you only have like like that little small list and they end they eat that all the time. So for them, it was a lot of the time. It was yogurt with, you know, some sort of sweetener they would. They would crush that they need to do it with protein powders or the flavored protein powders or or peanut butter in protein or things like that. And then as I always tell people..
