Fuel Talk Tip: Think of Fuel as Minutes, Not Gallons

"Trying to think of fuel in minutes Fuel is think fuel is minutes as opposed to gallons. When i asked somebody How far away. They live from my house times. They'll say It's about twenty five minutes away. And and i always want well. I i'd rather you tell me Twelve miles and then i can You know. I know the general direction. And i can apply some some logic to it and kind of figure out how far away it is in airplanes Most of the time we're talking about gallons and smaller airplanes. How much fuel is on board. The airplane forty three gallons fifty three gallons fifty forty eight whatever But think of that fuel as how many minutes do i have on board the airplane as opposed to how many gallons to have on the on board the airplane and for a couple of reasons you're going to be flying. Airplanes have different burn rates. Okay my saratoga. Holds one hundred and two gallons side. I don't care about that holds I i say it has five hours worth of fuel burns about twenty gallons per hour and hundred gallons And again my bladder doesn't go more about three hours. So if i'm flying with full fuel it's it's never really an issue of that airplane Are one seventy two old some forty three gallons and Burns about a gallons and our so again it holds about five gallon five hours worth of fuel as well and the reason being is is when i When i look at minutes let's let's take Let's just make some really easy math Let's say we decide that our personal minimum to land an airplane is Ninety minutes worth feel okay. Ninety minutes worth of feel. And i look at A route okay. We're gonna fly from point a to point b and it's gonna take this many hours. Are this many minutes. Let's say it's gonna take Three hours and We have five hours worth of fuel onboard. The airplane while we're gonna land with two hours worth of fuel. One hundred and twenty minutes and our minimum is ninety minutes while i know i have three thirty minutes of extra fuel at this point so as i'm flying long and i'm hitting my checkpoints. I know i've got thirty minutes of headroom thirty minutes of fuel capital if you will if i hit my first checkpoint. I realize two minutes behind schedule all now. I know i'm gonna land with twenty eight minutes my next checkpoint on another three minutes behind schedule now. Going to land with twenty five minutes and i can kind of project things and say well. Gee something is going on here. That's that's not There wasn't in the plan are are the winds different or or what is going on here. Why why are my. Why am i hitting these checkpoints constantly behind and So so my my time at checkpoints equates to fuel

"The with kevin mason. I don't know many people who are fond of speed limits. I know they're there for our safety. But here in nashville on the highways run about fifteen miles over the speed limit or fifteen miles under. They never run the speed limit. And that's never five miles over. It's either too fast or too slow. And i wondered to myself. Why does it happen to be that particular figure. I'm being facetious here. It's not necessarily fifteen. It can be twelve miles per hour over. Whatever it is but now nashville especially on the highways is getting to be like atlanta a big city where people are driving way too fast for the conditions. But that's not always the problem. It's not everybody driving fast. It some people driving way too slow. It's doing fifty in a sixty five fifteen to twenty miles per hour under the speed limit. That's a hazard that's dangerous. And of course they're always in the left or the centre lane. It'd be one thing if they're in the far right lane and a multi lane highway but they're always where they shouldn't be if you can't keep up with at least the speed limit. Getting out of the way isn't even an option. There's something wrong here. And i'm trying to figure out what it is. It's fifteen over fifteen under and it's nothing between.

Is Refresh Model S/X Battery Smaller?

"We know that the range on the long range version of the model s. has now increased to four hundred and twelve miles so previously and this is apn estimate previously four hundred to right before let's refresh so we only saw a ten mile increase. Which you know makes us think okay. Tussle didn't really change much in terms of the batteries there but they did note in the earnings report that they made changes to the batteries. Major changes to the modules yuan. They're still using those eighteen. Six fifty cells from panasonic But they have updated the chemistry or at least made some updates to the cell and battery architecture and general replaced those skateboard Visual image online. So it's it's definitely update in terms of the batteries but only see ten additional miles of range. Come out of that. I was pretty interesting especially when we look a little bit deeper and we noticed that the drag coefficient on the model s. has now been lowered from. I believe it was point two three before to now points two zero eight so that should definitely helped with the range. It's a pretty significant reduction in drag coefficient and then we've also seen them drop the weight so the wait for the long range model s now starts at four thousand five hundred sixty one pounds versus before. So i've got the way back machine pulled up here and this is from january twenty fourth. I'm not sure if you can see that. On the stream but from january twenty fourth the long range plus model s had a weight of forty eight hundred pounds so they've cut two hundred and fifty pounds out of the weight. They've reduced the drag coefficient so five percents rate reduction a significant reduction drake officiant and yet. We're only seeing ten more miles of range. This could be a trade off between tussles optimizing for in terms of energy versus power. Obviously the zero sixty on the stock in the long range right now has dropped from three point seven seconds before now down to three point one seconds so some of that could be impacting. The actual range that is happening from the epa tests. But if all else was held equal certainly expected a bigger range improvement from vizier. Point or the zero point two zero eight cd and the two hundred fifty pound weight reduction ver only ten miles only two percent more range two and a half percent more rain when they're cutting weight by five percent so we actually see a similar thing with the model x. As well flip over there so this current long range after refresh. We now have of starting weight and i think i think the drako fishing stay the same on the model x. but we starting wait Five thousand one hundred eighty five pounds on the model x. Verses here is again so this january twenty fifth so before the refresh. It was fifty four hundred thirty seven pounds so again similar. Two hundred and fifty pound reduction there almost five percent and only an actually in the case of the model x. We see arrange decrease so we had three hundred seventy one miles. Epa estimate before. And now we're at three hundred sixty so they only gained ten on the model last. They lost eleven on the model x. A to think that. I always this is pointing to me towards tesla potentially using less fewer batteries in the battery pack. Maybe that's not the case. Maybe these are software ltd but to cut that much weight to cut the drag officiant drako efficient and not gain more than ten miles of range. I think is pretty perplexing so dessel may have found a way to just you know they may have just said okay are target. Here's we're going to stay the same range. We're happy with these ranges and you know we think the customers are happy with these ranges. We're going to optimize for cost and just reduce the number of cells were putting in these new modules packs for the refresh That could have been an option or you know again. Maybe it's just that power versus energy exchange.

A Telsa Model S Refresh?

"You've been telling me about why. I think there's going to be a model as an ex refresh. Yeah and there was like it was really hard to test drive them. There were like upping the sales out of everything they were. You couldn't see them in showrooms anymore night. This big list of rumors as to why we thought it might happen and then like an hour ago. It just all unveiled so well. So there's a there's a lead up to it the the model s. design is it's like ten plus years old at this point like fundamentally. The design of the car is unchanged since the beginning rate. So there's one small outside refresh her where the front grill nose cone. that was an exterior. Like look change. Is that what you call a nosecone nosecone. Yeah i've always just called at the grill. But obviously it's not. It isn't enact plastic nosecone two more metal okay but The autopilot versions changed. But really fundamentally the inside has always been that vertical screen and it's always been the same doors. Same door handles same shape so they've never really changed the model s. in car years. That's a long time let alone tech years that's forever. Yeah so. The rumors have been building for a long time. And we kind of were like. I think that this earnings call on wednesday were according to one night. Just say you know yeah have plans to possibly make video about all this. But we're recording on wednesday night and during the earnings call. They update the site. They give the over all the stuff and dropped a new model lesson ex and yet it's something is there's a lot to it. I guess we'll just. I'm just going to go down the list. This obviously isn't a video podcast yet. But i do have a lot to say about the aesthetics and the things that they've changed right. Yeah maybe i'll use this template as like a guide for the video. What i make it. We'll see i almost debated telling you throw camera up here and just take the clips out and turn it into the youtube video also. Yeah so right off. The bat outside changes are pretty small. They turned all the chrome black kind of like they did with model three and model. I every single car company do that. Please stop with the chrome. I think toyota has been doing it. A bunch with just maybe not even like their door handles and window trim but they've been doing it with their emblems and like the wording and names on the back and they looked so good on every single caller romo terrible. Please stop. Yeah feel old. Basically starting to feel a little bit outdated so it's gone from the car. I think maybe just the logo the last chrome piece. but that's that's pretty sweet and then There's a little bit of a different shape up front a little bit of a more simple grill at the bottom. For the front splitter and different fog i think i read people were saying it looks like the air like in vents are a little bigger probably to help battery cooling yup the better battery performance and i think that leads us beautifully into the new specs before i talk about the interior. So it's just going to be three models model s. and i'm going to focus on model s even a model x. Got this refresh it. Basically doesn't exist tesla like they still make it kind of because they have to nightmare. Yeah there's not a lot of attention around the x this is about the s. I'm just talking about this. Yeah i'm just trying to think of. Who's the i feel like the x. Still gets a lot like in the blogger community. A couple david dobric jake paul logo on it. There's jailers very her. Jalen smith jr jada jason. What's his son's name. Now you've got me thinking. Smith i don jaden has one. There's some there's small market for the ex. Yeah but the model s. is where it's at so there's really just three versions now. And by the way. I'm gonna say overarching for this. Whole thing is simplicity. Dustless manufacturing simplifying line vehicles. So there's three there's a long range model s a plaid model s and a plaid plus model s. so model s long range has four hundred twelve mile range zero to sixteen three point one seconds dual motors and it's. It's a pretty standard. Look that's like what probably most people getting a model less would get then. The performance version is your plaid model s. which goes directly to triple motors. It drops a little bit range three hundred ninety miles but it goes two hundred mile an hour. Top speed and zero to sixty in one point nine nine seconds. I'm gonna say that one more time just in case you didn't hear it this. Several thousand pound four door family car. Hatchback does zero to sixty in one point. Nine nine seconds like you need to like take a an advanced driver's test in order to get something that can go under two seconds to pilot this thing. Yeah yeah every time. I think about like performance cars on the street. I'm like i icy regular people driving cars poorly all the time and i just get a little bit worried about giving them that much power. There's a whole youtube rabbit hole of great like mustang arm beats of people just like wrecking it into the median pulling out yet i mean i guess the good thing is this is all wheel. Drive is the safest car on the world. This is a car that's tries really hard not to crash itself but yeah lot power here but just so you know that's starting at one hundred twelve thousand nine ninety which has ten thousand more than the previous model and then plaid plus is eleven hundred horsepower versus that one thousand twenty of plaid zero to sixty. There are a little more vague with this under one point nine nine seconds. So it'll be faster. We don't know how much faster it's still trip promoters. And it'll do the quarter mile in less than nine seconds which would make it. The quickest zero to sixty and the quickest quarter-mile acceleration in any production car. Ever and again. this is not yet the roadster. This is just a speck. Yeah but the most interesting spec to me of plaid plus is it still triple motor. There's new battery info but it goes five hundred twenty plus miles on a charge. So what was the long range again. Four sixty long-range was four. Twelve for twelve plaid was down to three ninety and then plaid plus was five twenty so this leads me to believe that. Plaid plus is a different battery technology. Do you think it's the one. Because that's sounds around the specs of the roadster was supposed to have right exactly roadsters. Got us six twenty plus quoted mile range and on top of that. This is the one other thing that's really interesting. I'll just touch on the x for a second. I don't think this is happening the x. Because if you go to the model x. site you can see you have the long range version which has a three hundred sixty mile range and the plaid version which has a three hundred forty mile range. So there's no plaid. Plus so whatever's happening with plaid. Plus is i guess this ultra high end security premium powertrain and battery system that only the high end model s. And i guess eventually roadster star gonna get it. Sounds like it's just a roadster with a model spotty it's a four door roadster four door to door. Yeah no it's it's a it's a crazy it's crazy car i. I'm prefacing all this with like. I don't need it. I'm not gonna get it. I'm gonna wait till the roadster but also this is absolutely insane. What they've done now really. The the most important part is the inside of the car that they've updated so like i said simplicity's sake finally switched to the horizontal touchscreen inside which i think looks pretty good. It's like a little more well integrated with the car doesn't stick out as much as three. Yeah i think what i like. I like that. But i liked that. They kept the screen in front of you. Like a regular odometer like they have in the model s. already because like three and y. I'm fine with that screen. There i only thing is. It's a little weird that you have to look over seer odometer but the fact that you have a better spot there and you still have your regular like driving odometer with a high acid and speaking of that steering wheel hobo this is this is the interesting went and i think this is where a lot of people are polarized because this interior looks very similar minus steering wheel if you look on their site. It's a yoke style steering wheel and it's almost kinda squared off. So it's like the bottom half of a square steering wheel and then there's a bunch of buttons on the steering wheel itself and there are no blinker stocks. No windshield wiper stocks. Nothing behind the wheel. No paddles no nothing yeah. Let's paint a picture here though. Because i've never heard the term yoke style and i only understand it because i saw the picture right before so picture fighter jet handles like that. Yoke style top trying to top office doing rectangle and doesn't have a top part. So yeah i'm just like i was just trying to think about using it. In general it seems so cool for like straight line in like minor turns on a highway but exactly turning around in a parking lot or like a tight driveway or something seems miserable on it. Yeah i this is one of those things where i'm imagining it and i'm imagining it really poorly and i think i'm just going to have to try it because as of right now i don't even think this is legal to ship yet. I think you technically have to have enclosed steering wheel and then people earliest you have to ship it with one and the people can modify it later. I think that's technically the rule here in the us. I don't know the rules internationally. But i've never seen a car actually ship with a yoke steering wheel before so again. This is all tb will see it happens. But i think i'm going to have to give it a shot because it's really weird.

All of Teslas 2021 Model Year Updates

All of Teslas 2021 Model Year Updates

"Everybody, Rob Power here, and today we haven't exciting episode. We have updates from Tesla on almost every single vehicle in the lineup. So we're going to go through exactly what has changed because there's a lot here to keep track up. So tell normally doesn't make these broad sweeping changes across the lineup they sort of just update each vehicle as they have changes to make. This then is pretty unique for Tesla and it does seem like they're making these changes right at the same time that they're changing the model year. So even though on tussles website, they don't necessarily designate what model you're. The vehicle is the vehicle identification number does still indicate that and from those Vince we've been able to see. That Tesla has just now started producing those twenty twenty one model year vehicles over the last couple of weeks we'll talk a little bit more about that later but let's get right into the changes here. Predominantly, the changes have come to the model three but again, there are updates to all the vehicles which every captain a chart here. If you are watching on video, we'll go out of the traditional order here of as three X Y and switch it up. We'll start with the model three. So the standard range plus originally had a two hundred and fifty mile range that has now been increased by thirteen miles two, hundred, sixty, three the long range version saw the most significant bump for the model. Going from three hundred, twenty, two miles before now to three hundred and fifty three miles of range and the performance jumped up by sixty miles from two hundred, ninety, nine miles before now to three hundred fifteen for the standard range plus and the performance that's about a five percent increase in range. But for the long range, it's actually about nine and a half percent. Unfortunately at this point in time, we don't know what is driving that significant variance between the long range, all wheel drive, and the other trims were just going to have to wait and see once he's actually start being delivered to customers aside from the range. The long range and performance versions are now quicker zero to sixty. The Long Range non-performance has been updated from four point four seconds before to four point two seconds now, and the performance has gone from three point two seconds to sixty down to three point one as for other changes we've talked about quite a few of these earlier this week about the big one here is the heat pump house actually able to confirm that the new version of the model three does have the heat pump. This was just from one source at Tesla. So it is possible that that source was misinformed but from my knowledge, the model three now does have a heap like the model why that should improve the efficiency especially in colder climates we know that the model three has Now been updated from chrome to have black trim instead a power trunk. There is a new steering wheel electric is saying that the steering wheel is heated I have not seen that confirmed anywhere else though. So I think that's a question mark at this point in time, there's new updates. So the air wheels and the sport wheels have been updated to a new look, and then the performance model three has been updated to the Uber. Turbine wheels that are currently on the model y though on the model three, they're an inch smaller at just twenty inches rounding things out are I believe updated mirrors though I think this happened earlier sometime around September to add a heating element to the side mirrors. And then I believe there's also now an auto dimming rear view mirror for the model three. There has been updates to the windows apparently for better soundproofing, and then of course, the updated center console. So the fingerprint trap that was the piano black glossy console is no more at least for the model three does still remain on the Model Y. so speaking of the Monowai, let's move on to the updates there these are just range focused. So the long range model why has improved by ten miles from previous EPA rating of three hundred, sixty miles to a new rating of three hundred and twenty six miles three percent increase there, and then the performance model why has gone from two hundred ninety? One miles up to three. So twelve miles there or an additional four percent we'll come back to that for a little bit more analysis but just around things out for the Model S. The long range range actually stayed the same at four hundred and two miles. So no change there. But the performance had a significant increase from three hundred, forty, eight miles before up to three, hundred, Eighty, seven, thirty, nine miles incremental or eleven point two percent of course, the other big news on the Model S. This week has been the price cut. So the long range has been reduced by fifty five hundred dollars while the performance reduced by three thousand as for the X. No price cut here so. There is a pretty big spread now between the US on the ex but the long range version did see a range increase as we talked about earlier this week when we had seen that, Maroni sticker from a new delivery, it's gone from three hundred, fifty one miles before now up twenty miles to three hundred, seventy, one about six percent increase, and then the performance seeing similar level of increase to the performance model s from three Oh five before now up to three, hundred, forty, one about a twelve percent increase or thirty six miles. So to the best of my knowledge that captures all the changes across the entire lineup. But of course, as these vehicles start to be delivered, we may still. Uncover some other minor changes but to summarize all this, if we look at the average here across the entire lineup, not using any waiting by sales or anything like that destroyed up across the board previously tussles average range three, hundred, twenty miles per vehicle. Now it's three, hundred and forty. So a twenty mile increase for the average vehicle tesla sales or about six percent. So how is Tesla able to achieve all this? Well, back in July? We had heard that Panasonic had already developed technology that had resulted in a more than five percent increase in energy density on Tussles twenty-one seventy battery cells and Reuters reported that they would quote start converting lions at Gaggenau Vada from September so I think now. We're mid October were starting to see the results of those updates in the lineup, and we're also seeing improvements and s an ex and those were to use the eighteen sixties from. Japan not the twenty one seventies from Geena. Vada but if Panasonic was able to improve the twenty-one seventies while they were probably able to improve the eighteen, six fifty as well I think it's tough to find another explanation for the roughly six percent increase in the Model X. range other than updated cells. But the confusing part is that zero percent increase on the long range model s remember though when the Model S. increased from somewhere around three hundred, eighty miles up to that four hundred to rating the model extra. At all. So really it's just catching up with the previous model s updates. So I wonder if maybe Panasonic had been testing an earlier version of that new battery cell with the five percent energy density increase in just the Model S. but then it wouldn't explain why the performance model which would presumably have the same pack as the long range is seeing a similar increase. On the model here as the Model X.

1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens

"So my episode today. is about the nineteen eighty Mount Saint Helens eruption. So now, we weren't alive then even though we were not alive, then it was you know years until Jillian. Many years. Until we were born. We are in our. Mid Twenty. S. So we're very youthful. Yeah. We say what's a CD or whatever I don't know anything I couldn't even pretend to be a teenager because I have no idea went technology. Don T TIKTOK ON THE TIKTOK You know on the TIKTOK so. Nineteen Eighty Mount Saint Helens eruption has a lot of parallels to what's going on in the world today, but it's an interesting story. So to to start with for our non US friends and Non West Coast friends, I didn't know the details about this when I started researching it but Mount Saint Helen's which is known as a lot lot to the indigenous lets people and Lou wit. Luella cloud to the click a tat is an active stretch of Okano located in. Skamania. County. Washington in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States I. Apologize to the Washingtonians. If I pronounced Skamania county your Skamania county incorrectly. I'm sure I will get an email about this. Fifty miles eighty kilometers northeast of Portland Oregon Ninety, six miles or one hundred and fifty four kilometers south of Seattle Washington. So to get a sense of where Mount Saint Helen's is. If you're thinking of both Washington state and Oregon is roughly like. Square ish rectangular ish in shape with Washington, in the north and Oregon just below. Mount Saint Helen's is in the lower left quadrant of Washington state near the border of Oregon. and. She's roughly halfway between Portland, and the Portland Oregon and Olympia Washington, which is the Washington state capital. Okay. also relevant northeast of Mount. Saint Helen's is what's called Spirit Lake. And there's a bunch of little rivers and creeks in that area just due to like the geology of the area but almost directly north of the mountain is the north fork toodle river. River toodle or Poudel T. O. U. T.. L. E. Title River. So. Also? Mount Saint. Helen's takes its English name from the British diplomats. Lowered Saint Helen's is a friend of explorer George Vancouver who made a survey of the area in the late eighteenth century The volcano is located in the cascade range is part of the cascade volcanic arc, which is a segment of the Pacific Ring of fire that includes over one hundred and sixty active volcanoes and for the record before the explosion mount. Saint, Helen's stood at nine, thousand, six, hundred and eighty feet high. So. They knew it was part of the ring of the ring of Fire Okay Yeah Yeah So. They knew as part of the ring of fire. It had experienced some activity throughout recorded history but it. It remained dormant basically from its last period of activity in the eighteen, Forty S and eighteen fifties. So by one thousand, nine hundred had been more than one hundred years before there was any like really significant activity that includes ash like little burps and like any kind of flow or anything like that. So. At this point people were pretty complacent thinking nothing's going to happen anytime soon it's fine like it's a dormant volcano for all intents and purposes until we get to the spring of nineteen eighty. Okay. So, there were several small earthquakes beginning on March fifteenth of that year indicating that magma may have begun moving below the volcano also just as an f. y. we talked about natural disasters on episode sixty one which was called here I am rock. You like a hurricane I talked a little bit about that about volcanoes in that episode. So if you want to refresh your memory about the basics of what's in a volcano check that out episode sixty one, it's very good. Thank you. So on March Twentieth Three Forty Five PM Pacific Standard Time, which everything will be NPS T. Shallow magnitude four point two earthquake centered below the volcano's north flank signal the volcanoes return from one hundred, twenty three years of hibernation. A gradually building earthquake swarm saturated area seismographs, and started to climax at about noon on March twenty fifth reaching peak levels in the next two days including an earthquake registering five point one on the Richter scale. A total of one hundred and seventy four shocks of magnitude. Two point six greater were recorded during those two days. That's a lot. Yeah. So geologists in that area are like look is no not a great sign. Initially. There was no direct sign of eruption but small earthquake induced avalanches of snow and ice were reported from aerial observations. So this mountain is shaking and you know stuff is falling off. It's not it's not nothing. At twelve thirty, six PM on March twenty seventh phreatic eruptions which are explosions of steam caused by magma suddenly heating groundwater. So that's like a quick like spur. Of, like Ash and Steam K ejected and smashed rock from within the old summit crater. Excavating a new crater, two, hundred and fifty feet wide. And sending an ass column about seven thousand feet into the air. So you yeah, knock. Great. So by this date along, east trending fracture system had also developed across the summit area. So there's cracks forming in the summit. This was followed by more earthquake swarms in a series of explosions that said ash even higher above there. And most of this ash fell between three and twelve miles from its fendt. But some was carried hundred fifty miles south to bend Oregon or two hundred and eighty five miles east to spokane Washington. So the ash went pretty far and those who were like what the What is happening here? So? then. A second new crater and a blue flame were observed on March twenty ninth.

Wild Hydrangeas of the World

"Dan Hinkley it's great to have you back on the podcast. Welcome thank you very much Matt. It's great to be back. Well you've already been on the episode before and we've talked a lot about your background but for those that didn't listen or new to hearing your name Tell us a little bit about who you are and what it is you do. Well essentially A glorified gardener. I am the director at Herons Garden in Kingston Washington Nets Garden that I started in nineteen eighty seven with my partner Rubber Jones. I currently have a personal garden in India. Nola just twelve miles away from Heron's book called win cliff. Both of those gardens are open to the public. If you should ever find yourself in the areas of the we encourage people to come to walk around and and then I do a little writing. Delo speaking some design consultation so a lot of a lot of fingers in different pots but all in all plants in on all the blast. Ya Fantastically charmed existence for any plant lover but You Know People WanNa know more about your background in You're working plant exploration. They can listen to the previous episode. After that was recorded we talked a little bit about maybe diving into more detail into some of your favorite groups and we both agreed that the hydrangea. We're going to be the topic of discussion and I'm really excited to pick your brain about this. This group of plants today great. I mean it's one that I have had an infatuation with ever since I've been a kid and of course it's another one of those wonders of the plant world at once. You get to know a little you you realize how little you know and so you know it's unfolding but ever so entertaining both four in a plant explorer but also for a gardener at the such great application to gardens of North America and in Europe. Weather not necessarily native to write. And this idea that the more you look the more you realize how little you know about this group I mean. This exemplifies my entire experience Since we talked about doing this episode of growing up my experience with hydro was largely just a couple of pom pom varieties and then a little bit later on meeting. At least one or two are native species in the wild in southern Appalachia but I had no idea the breadth of what this genus in this family overall has presented the world. It's been very successful in north and south and east and West and just like you had a hydrangea. Nekia Lada outside our back door in northern Michigan. That's like zone. Three B thing. Some managed to survive in blonde some every year. And then we also had hydrangea lessons. Annabel and everybody my age at least to live on the east coast new or knows Annabel because it was such a mainstay a mop head. Arborescence wanted a heartiest hydrogen. Just so you know. That's that's where my introduction came as well but as I started traveling I was dumbfounded. By how many niches they have occupied. How successful the genus. The family as Ben as a whole and also at least in the Pacific northwest. How many of those can be brought into cultivation in? Add a great deal to the garden not only by flower but with foliage as well. Yeah and so thinking broadly about this. I was actually new to the idea. That hydrangea had. Its own family. I kind of limited with CAPRA fully. Acc so sort of a broad spectrum treatment for taxonomy sake here. What's going on with this group Obviously is a lot more refined but it was even a decade ago when I first started looking at these. You'd oftentimes find Hydrangea For Gay she was one of those bags of everything that didn't know where they belong. They put it in the sanctuary. Casey so It has now been refined obvious. Leads through a lot of different means available to taxonomic. It is a family to its own. Hydrogen Jasey and they have Would quickly dissect this. There's two sub families in hydrogen JC Eighty and James Yoy D. And then within the sub family HYDRANGEA LADY. They have made two tribes. Which are the hydrogen d. e. In Philadelphia? So it really for the sake of time in one hour fairly gonNA scratch the surface with just hydrology e which is where the the breadth of ornament event is but the the other tribe in the in the hand I drank. Philadelphia's obviously has Philadelphia has dude see as a tremendous number of other plants that we are familiar with in our garden so they're lumped rate in with hydrogen JC. Now that's awesome. Yeah then there's you know it's one of those things where again I looked deeper and realized I recognized a lot of those those. I guess that makes sense that they're related but again for the sake of time. The hydrangea you're going to be our focus specifically the genius hydrangea and roughly speaking. I mean we're we're still working and I'm sure things will change In the years or decades to come but roughly speaking how many species are within the genus. Hydrangea There's you know it changes. Because obviously lumper's lumper's splitters continually added but it ranges around sixty about sixty species. But you know they're still discovering new species and in particular in northern parts of South America just three years ago they identified. I think it was fourteen. Fourteen or fifteen new species of climbing Evergreen hydrangea from the mountains of northern Ecuador and Peru Bolivia Colombia in there. So you know. It's still a lot to be learned about true. Hydrangea as out there. They certainly have not all been discovered yet. Another big realization for me in trying to get familiar with this genus was this diversity of life-form you mentioned climbing and I'm sure. Plenty of gardeners will recognize climbing varieties of her Georgia. In of course the obvious shrubbery ones. I mean this is a really cool thing that that seems. Like hydrangea has found different ways. To make a living as a woody plant depending on where you're you're looking for them yet no Absolutely Obviously most people in North America will be familiar with hydrogen novela which is an Asian species. That's the hardest most dependable deciduous flowering plant for Shade Climbing Planet. I should say ourself clinging plant for shade in climates But new go south on occasion in Asia's while you find climbing evergreen species of hydrogen in I would say ninety nine point nine percent gardeners even in the Pacific northwest where we can grow. So many of these are aware of the fact that there are climbing evergreen branches at provide grateful during the summertime and wintertime and then beautiful flowers. That are dead ringers. For what we in our minds think of is a hydrant right on and in thinking about sort of diversity at least here in North America You know sort of West East divide always stands out especially when it comes to gardening You're located on the West Coast as you mentioned what you have over there or is this something that at least in. North America is largely assigned to east of the Mississippi and Sorta down south from there. So like in a broad sense mad here. I'm I'm sitting nine Sonny Bloch this morning a rare sunny day in the puget sound area and right off the block that I live on the two hundred foot bluff repeat Assam. We have native stands of our native Philadelphia's Philadelphia's Louis named after obviously Lewis and Clark fame and in the broad sense that is indeed in the hydrant JC. So I can't discount the those plants. If you to California now you can find Wesleyan Carpentaria and of course James Lia and a few other genera mostly not all that ornamental so. I can't say that west of the Mississippi is deposited in hydrogen JC but Zero through hike packages zero. So we have to get east of the Mississippi before we run into the only two representatives of the genus in North America. And you. You've already made not worth one of those are Bresson's which is very widespread from New York. Even Southern Quebec all the way down into Florida and the Gulf states and has variations of geographical variations within. But just a darn good dependable plant for gardeners and then Hydrangea Chrissa fully. Which is more? Gulf state oriented a beautiful very distinctive. You know probably one of the most distinctive hydrogens in the entire family is is found in in the Gulf states and You know turn the breeders loose on these which they have with Gusto in the last ten to fifteen years in your ending up with these new pink varieties of our lessons and then all of these extraordinary forms of The Oakley Hydrangea. So far cry from what was available to me as a young lad when we had a Annabel that was about it. Now we have you know pink the pink forms bread by the Maestro of plant breeding. Tom Rainey at North Carolina. State University is really Extraordinary things expanding the breadth of ornament within that that one tax of

8 Offbeat Questions About Cruise Ships Answered

"Gary Benbridge. This is another my tips travis. There are eight questions I hear people often ask on a cruise ship or ask me about cruising. They really are slightly unusual and a little bit on the side so I thought I would actually answer them right here right now starting with this. Is there a jail on board a cruise ship. Well actually there is. What's known known as a break? Now if this some issue normally passages will be restricted to their cabin but there is on most cruise ships a brig this is normally a pretty secure cure room normally in your security where they can hold up rowdy passages or in fact I guess crew until they get to the next port and can hand them over to authorities artis if something serious has happened now in reality one of the big challenges on board cruise ships is crime. And how much crime exists onboard a cruise. The statistics would suggest crime rates are not particularly high. However it's quite difficult to understand because there's no requirement and no sort of central registry because of the way that cruises run where they're registered however one of the ways of looking at crime is there are eight serious crimes which cruise companies have to report? If they're either embarking or disembarking in the United States of those eight series crimes three of them are the most reported that salts sexual assaults and theft thefts of large amounts of property high value property. However it's not really known how much petty crime exists on board a cruise ship? There are no police police on board and security will deal with most issues so the things you tend to hear about are the more serious things saying that in terms of the amount of crime crime per thousand or hundreds of thousands of passengers. It's really low on a cruise so when a crime does happen on cruise ship it get a lot of publicity but it is kind of hard to get the stats but if you do for foul and you do commit a crime or cause a disturbance there is brick on board which you will be thrown into the second question that I get asked a lot and here is how many people die on a cruise every year. Well actually the number surprise me. Small around about two hundred deaths are recorded on cruise ships bear in mind something like twenty one. Twenty two million people crews on cruise ships every year. It's a pretty small a number. Most of those deaths are related to age the dying of old age onboard cruise things to look out for on a cruise. If you hear over the Tannoy a system of the loudspeakers Operation Bright Star that means as a medical issue on board some sort of medical emergency on board and if you actually hear Operation Rising Star Star that means that has been a death on board of course the cruise lines not normally like to publicize it if it happens because it's normally happens kind of creepy and a cabin or whatever. So what do they do with the bodies. Well actually cruise ships do have a morgue and have to carry body bags normally body. We put in a body bag. It'll be stored in the mock walk now. What happens there buddy depends a little bit on the port? Some ports will want the body to be disembarked. I guess sometimes the family disembark on other cases the body he will stay on board until the ship gets back to port. It often started in because that just makes it much easier for the cruise line and often for the family to deal with the third question is is it a ship or is it a boat a lot of people on cruises go crazy when people call a cruise ship a cruise boat. So what is the right terminology terminology. Well in the whole military and all the maritime world's one of the rules that people use is you can put a boat on a ship the competition on a boat if you look at cruise ships they actually have boats on them. They have life on them so that does make them so. It's kind of informal thing. Another point of view is is anything over. Twenty meters of sixty feet is considered a ship so actually for example and river cruising longtime. They were called river boats because because they were shorter than sixty feet long however the general view is that anything's over that size is ships as in the military world. Anything of that size is I liked to be called a ship in practice. There's no right or wrong. However people who are into cruising will tend to call it a ship and and not about you'll even find some crews captains please so strong and so I've been on cruises for example on celebrity cruises where Captain Kate is is renowned for a badge that she wears which says it's a ship not about the next question I hear lot and it's actually one thing I wondered about for a long time is? Why is the safety drill called a muster drill? It's quite hard to find out the reason for that but it seems to be. It's always been called that and it's comes from the word muster muster which means to gather and it's stuck. It's become one of those terms for the safety drill very important. Of course the safety drill has to be done within. Twenty four hours was of passengers embarking. Since Costa Concordia that's become even stricter and now cruise lines do that. Before the ship actually sets sail the fifth question and is. If you've ever looked at daily program you'll see a couple of people have lots of Friends of bill and Dorothy. For example. Have lots of friends so the question you could ask is. Why on Earth do bill? W dorothy and Jimmy have so many friends that they actually have a meet up or friends of Bill. W you was the one that really kicked it all off and it's because cruise lines originally didn't want to say that they were hosting alcoholics. Anonymous Meetings Built W. refers to William or bill w Wilson who was one of the CO founders of the A. Dorothy was the codename way back when for the LGBTQ jibbed community you'll find nowadays that very few cruise lines talk about friends of Dorothy meetings and they will just call them. LGBT MEET UPS nowadays. It's the Dorothy slang word has kind of disappeared people dischord LGBT. The other one that you may see although it's much less common is friends of Jimmy and friends of Jimmy. Que refers to the or narcotics anonymous which was founded by James Kenan most cruise lines though will tend to direct people looking for an NA meeting friends of Jimmy K to the Friends of Bill W meeting. So that's why Bill Jimmy and Dorothy have so many friends. Yes and meet UPS aboard the ship and other question that I hear a lot is is it saltwater. In the toilets of course no one's going to get close enough enough to actually find out and test for themselves. Well actually originally. It was saltwater in the toilets that's before desalination plants became really really expensive and were just just prohibitive so salt water was actually used both in the showers and also in the toilets that created a lot of problems because caused rust and all sorts of problems within the actual equipment. But it was originally saltwater. Today it's not salt water. The next question is where does all this clean pure non-salted water come from. There's actually three places that it can come from on a cruise ship. The first and the most traditional is what's known as bunkering bunkering is maritime term for loading loading water on board a ship and of course if what is bunkered on a cruise ship. It's tested on both. Make sure it's all safe to drink. However nowadays cruise ships will tend to make their own water and two ways of doing that the first of the processes that cruise ships use themselves on board is known as steam? Evaporation so this is where the cruise ship uses uses the heat. The huge amount of heat that's generated by the engines. They take salt water. The heated up it evaporates the water evaporates all assaults and stuff is left behind. They then turn the steam back into water through condensation and they have water that they can entreat and make ready the other process S.. which is the most common process is known as reverse osmosis? So what happens here is was taken on board. And it's basically pushed through the microscopic screen which then keeps all the salts in the stuff like that behind and any of the fresh clean water go through because the water is then treated and make sure that it's safe to drink and consume and soon so this is the key ways that the ship gets water that people drink and use on board so water is perfectly safe drinking. It's processed and treated extremely Tarini thoroughly before it's sent through the ship for consumption and use. The next question is around waist now clearly on ships of several thousand people well an enormous amount of waste is going to be generated by human waste and rubbish. Waste so what actually happens to all of that waste. Let's talk first of all about surge. Judge Binds National Law. Oceangoing vessels are actually able to put surge in the once that twelve miles out from from land and they're going to certain speed however cruise ships are however not allowed to do it so all cruise lines which part of clear the Cruise Line Association abide right by policy which says that no untreated surge will be put it into the sea anywhere in the world at any time. So what happens. Well it's treated on board. First of all they take blackwater which is basically the human waste and take gray waters. That's water that's come out of things like the kitchens or the basis or the showers. Those two would is is all combined in certain ratios there then treated by nearly sort of bacterial treatment which purifies it then goes through another process they use UV to really treat the water rather than chlorine or chemicals because ultimately the water wants treated and is back to being completely it'd be safe and free of impurities is released normally back into the ocean when it comes to food waste all the food waste is collected and it goes through. These grinders turned turn basically into a runny mixture which then is normally also able to then be released into the sea sometimes of course it is then pumped in on land when it comes to other waste raced this whole process. What's important to know is crucial to have an environmental office on board charge of all of these various operations? So when it comes to waste your cabinet shoot for example. We'll sort through all of your waist and sorted into plastics to metals into paper. All of the glass is collected on board. It's sorted by color it's ground down and then disembarked because it sold off as waste can be recycled on land papers sorted out it's all bundled up and again that's handed of And sold for recycling and the same is done separately for Kabul and of course for things like metal cans all crushed down so there's a huge pick operation. One things. I would encourage you to do if you have a cruise ship that offers a full behind the scene to now you'll have to pay for these but it will take you right and down as the deck of the ship and you get to meet the environmental officer and you get to see the whole processing plot and it's really interesting to see how they take the waste both human wastes and the gray ray water and paper and glass and cans and it's really good to see firsthand how it's actually dealt with so this whole big recycling operation that takes WCHS place onboard cruise

"The twelve mile reef. And what does he win for that one Gedi? Jason's going to go check out the Florida orchestra that. He's got a couple of tickets to check him out the fee then. The Florida orchestra and they are spectacular. Believe me and watch the phrase that pays Toby. Jason. Jason I'm sorry. Toby's gone. We just changed your name Jason. Anyway, you got a winner there for sure that was a y'all ever see that movie? I'd never even heard of until you mentioned called beneath the twelve mile reef, and it was about two sponge divers out there and a lot of it was shot in Tarpon springs. I always love watching new soak that up then you you soak that movie Upton you was that because it's a sponge movie. Sponge movie, I still remember when all may again. Is what is that over sandwich? Let me guess we got fried chicken and egg. Gravy. Okay. Rayvey? And the there cheese on there too. Why cheese and eggs and Giral. And we got stone crab claws. The first of the season, we did have stone. Yeah. We did have that was the first time Katie had ever tried it. Kidding? I hope you're not allergic to shellfish. And I'm also not disappointed those who are very very good. Oh, man. Well, the the sauce is what makes it great because stone crab claws all tastes the same. But it's the sauce that makes the difference. That's what I call breakfast of champions right there. Oh that is have claws and a hangover sandwich. But anyway, the movie beneath the twelve mile reef if you ever get to see it on. I don't know Turner classic movies or anything like that. Or order it. It's worth ordering because if you're familiar with Tarpon springs, it's really a neat movie. But interestingly, I think I've told this story before we wanted to do a sponge festival we were trying to talk the folks in Tarpon springs into having a sponge festival and to bring SpongeBob squarepants down here since he was very popular back. Then I was my son's favorite back then and didn't you enjoy actually go talk to the council to make it? We had to go to the council because the people in Tarpon springs said, no, that's an artificial sponge are sponges are real. And so we went before the Tarpon springs city council meeting one night and got up and testified that SpongeBob was a real sponge because he had parents. He wasn't an artificial spongy had parents, really important stuff. You're getting behind here, Jack they well. They went on and they had these they didn't. Call it. I wanted to call it the SpongeBob square fist. But they call it to Tarpon springs. Sponge fast. Did you still got SpongeBob? Spongebob SpongeBob outfit down here and guide. Dresses spongebob. And they had a big parade. And every the real SpongeBob didn't come down. Fake sponge to tell you this, Katie. But there isn't. Drama. There isn't a. A spongebob. But he's got parents real SpongeBob. Did he bring Patrick with real after he forgot about out there? People were fishing here on the beer. Well, we're Plum out of time here, it's it's six something on AM Tampa Bay..

"You know what I was thinking about today as I was walking around, I, I walked with them for probably twelve miles or so before I dot, the internet goes start kind of figured out what I was gonna say, winner loss, but I was remembered thinking wave AC before when he kinda just broke onto the scene and someone asked him OJ rather a Ryder Cup, a major. He was like at Ryder Cup, and it was like a controversial take. It was like, what? Why would he say that? Like, I don't know. That's that seems so like and like I just he, he might be board for this event like he, you could tell it really, really, really matter to him and he was the guy who was out there like steely determination, like pounding his chest. He, I thought, you know, he didn't make a lot of birdies today, but Rory hit all. All over the map and kept making these ridiculous doubts. Rory short game was as good as I've ever seen it. JT just did not let it sort of break him like it would have been so easy to be demoralized me like, what am I gotta do to like beat this guy, and he just kept grinding and grinding grinding. And then he just noted that t- shot on eighteen which honestly think shook were a little bit that's made him. So reconsider clubs, like, all right, got it. Gets the fairway got a chance and and that's what sort of I'm really kind of admitted it or JT admitted afterwards, said, you know what? I'm sure it was a lot of pressure when I put the ball down the middle of the fairway and stuff. And then then it was kind of really great that JT like if you can hear this on the broadcast or anything, but like he grabbed ROY on the green was like, I just wanna thank you for like, always been so good to be like, you've always been such a like a kind person in really respect how you and everything like, thanks man. It was just kind of cool moment to sort of there wasn't any hate between them like, I'm sure there. They might not be friends, but they're certainly friendly and it was like a very great sort of finished his route. I, I do. I think they are friends. I think they're pretty. I don't. That's the only thing they hanging each other's houses and whatnot. Rory's got mostly kind of a private life, especially these days. But I remember back in twenty sixteen after the Ryder Cup talking with Rory. And he just he was talking about j. t. back then he's like, dude, this guy's talent. And then when he wants Sony, I just remember he like message meters. Like that's the guy right there. That's that's the guy. And when he when he wanted the PGA last year is like what I tell you about JT like he has a lot of respect for him so that probably along those lines out, imagine that very, I wouldn't say like a coach to JT. They're like four years apart in age or not even that whatever it is, but like they do get along really well and have a tremendous a lot of respect for each other and it's kinda. I wanted to tweet this, but I've got butthurt about it. But I want to tweet like on the team from Jupiter, Florida. Justin, Thomas. And on the t. from the other side of Jupiter, Florida, ruby. So speaking AT you. I don't think I've said this on the pot or anything, but you know that privately. I've been a little bit reluctant sort of think that he can win like a masters or a British Open and ready to walk back that take like he's got a enough game that like it doesn't matter. Like if he plays mostly through the air like he's he's gonna dust one of those horses someday and he's going to, I think he can, you know, win. You know, you can't ever predict someone could win the grand slam. 'cause a lot of really great offers never did, but he could easily win three of the four legs of what they are..

"You'll last weekend I went caving. I was amazed at how much life there is underground cave, crickets bets, even K fish how deep can life exist, underground. Any studies show life as much as a mile underground on and there is some indirect evidence of microbial life as far as twelve miles underground, but where does this stuff live beside from caves doesn't the subsurface consist of solid rock doesn't. The mass of rock is heavily fractured and faulted water basic requirement for life seeps down into these cracks to a depth of many miles. The amount of subsurface freshwater may be up to one hundred times as much as in all the rivers lakes and swamps in the world combined, the deep subsurface may contain two to twenty times as many simple microbial cells as in all the. Oceans and up to a third of the earth's entire biomass. He goes systems on the earth surface rely on the ability of plants and micro organisms to capture the energy of sunlight. How does life get by without sunlight underground instead of sunlight, underground life relies on chemical energy, microbes, extract energy from sulfur and hydrogen compounds. For example, this feature of subsurface life is interesting to Astra biologists since there are many places in the solar system where liquid water appears to exist, underground spacecraft, have spotted water seeping from underground on Mars. Jupiter's moon Europa, and Saturn's moon and sell it us are known to harbor lightness, oceans, beneath their surfaces. Understanding underground life on earth can help prepare us to search for it on these other worlds, whose moment of science comes from the university. I'm glad I'm ya'll Cassandra.
