"A prayerful meditation on the 12 days of Christmas. On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me 12 drummers drumming. The 12 drummers drumming, sounding out the cadence of what we believe in our lives. The 12 points of doctrine in the apostles creed. I believe, in God, the father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our lord. Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven and a seated at the right hand of the father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. "The most popular premier in the country and logo. So carter zooming out of tonight looking at the two front runners give me stock of the race. Who's who's doing better right now. After the debate behind them with some of the the wind behind their back with some of the items i mentioned i may have missed a few but i think those are the major ones are the last at least forty two to seventy forty eight to seventy two hours. I mean. I think that there's no question that o'toole as a is in a much better spot than trudeau. In fact i was thinking about this today. You know you're watching. We're watching the ppc growth. And it's you know whether it's seven points or eleven points is really irrelevant. It's not too. It's not within the margin of error of zero That's a significant shifts. In imagine worked o'toole would be if bernie wasn't taking eight percent right if if if if tool had been able to hold onto the far right in the same fashion that he's held onto the center of the of the canadian electorate and this would be a very big shift. So you know as much as the left loves to talk about. Votes blinked costing them It true oh tools inability to hold onto the far right wing May cost him quite a bit. Because had he been able to hold the right and the center of the conservative movement. Together he would be unstoppable against trudeau. Right now He hasn't been able to Because it looks like if you move to the you know in today's environment moving to the center does cost you the right Because it's very polarized very very fraught with things like the anti vaccine movement and and things like that and trump 'isms but basically i think that will tools is is probably a much stronger spot and i think the other thing. Is that the running on the runway right now. You know we talked i. We talk just a couple days feels like a couple of days ago. We were talking about one the next twelve days. We want them to do this. And then the twelve days after that. We'll want them to do that. And you're down to ten. You don't have you have a play left. You have a play left so you better make sure that it works because After you call the play after the debate. That's it so the the meeting that's happening right now in liberal. Hq better be a fucking good one. Corey carter's absolutely right on time line. I'm going to ask you the same question in a different way To me the logo. Endorsement the blast zone on that seem significant for for tools gains in quebec. Where do you kinda stack the leaders up based on what you've seen over the last forty eight hours and some of their their big and small wins that they've had. I didn't watch the french-language debate. I just caught the commentary about it Obviously the big moments that pops through were the idea of of trudeau fighting and say. Hey i'm i'm a quebecer to you don't have a monopoly on quebec I do wonder though zane if that didn't subways. Antagonize the preview of quebec. And maybe make the statement today or forceful because like oh no. You don't speak for quebec justin trudeau. I speak for quebec. And and it's the kind.

Germany and france have also expressed interest in an e. u. summit with mr putin and uncertain rebalancing appears to be going on here strategic split between keeping dialogue with mr putin open and keeping him at arm's length. "It's kind of like the trees like the kerensky. They figure you know lennon. Put him in as a week. Figure transition figure. I mean you know the The left even viewed fdr that way when he first became president did supported because then they can guy down the road and he'd this week straws this intermediate figure wouldn't have any actual political power is decide. It's a procedurally that I think it's twelve days before it could be ratified and right now. The speaker of the knesset is a netanyahu appointee and he's dragging it out so they one house. They want to force a vote to get rid of the current speaker so they could hurry it up a but if any point within the next twelve days yahu could get defections from one of the parties then the coalition will fall apart in the most likely place to get defections are gonna be from The few right wing parties that are in the black lake Even the bennett's own on people that are The right wing parties will bend the back to netanyahu that the design. That's what you're netanyahu said that that So don't be so sure that The argon form a coalition and I've i've been sailing is is really politics really a mess in in constitutional convention. I saw i. I didn't see that conversation. You had with mordechai ca. Darby thing even your scholarly Professor qatar is really saying that israel should have a completely upend in change. Its nature from your however was set up to a confederation and so m zooming someone professor could dr is saying that the current system in israel is completely unworkable and broken and they need to have some sort of a constitutional convention and restructuring of the whole government and i am generally in agreement with you actually qatar in his confederate plan. That's i think that's probably the best idea. But you know. Unfortunately that would a require completely changing the israeli constitution and system. And if you can't get a coalition Even have a prime minister. How you're going gonna get a super coalition to change The you'll the whole system. And then you're really bennett is really just going to be a strong run. You put them in. And so if the coal the there's also promise of bennett does get in and the coalition falls apart. You can have the same situation. With like netanyahu with bennett. Were there keeps on being elections in Bennett will be the prime minister going forward until they could figure it out and god forbid that could be a disaster because he he is a strong hand man that that had basically been calling..

"Read one page. 'cause you can read one page in two minutes eventually won't just reek for two minutes. You just keep going but that two minutes really reading and the other thing. That's a really cool thing. I'm ramon mini trampoline. Sounds like mum but that because that changes not only you're kind of energy levels but it also changes our internal biology because some show you know whenever we have any sort stress response you know bought body downloads. Adrenaline coaches all to get ready for the the caveman fight or flight. And if you think about it if we're not having to literally fight all away because it is a physical stress where those go and you know. There's a big suggestion that today's stress is creating inflammation in the as which leads to both physical and mental health problems so the bouncing on the trump plane absolutely changes your state of mind changes your energy but also gets you system active. Yeah that yeah. Yeah but it's it is two minutes just chunking things down because i think sometimes stress comes because we feel overwhelmed so it may well be sitting back and making a list and prioritize saying and just giving as she say two minutes to the tasks that we don't enjoy quite so much but very much about recognizing if you're having lots of days like that you really need to step back and really think about you know sort of the overall picture because whilst human beings we respond well to a little bit suppressor the right place in the right way on the right days but if that pressure is prolonged is overwhelming yet. We know students from an old. Hey thank the internet connection went a bit fuck foggy so you were just talking about if the pressure becomes prolonged. Yeah if we if we've sort of dealing with pressure on let's say like basis it's ongoing. It's prolonged period of time. That can actually take us from a place of high performance actually into failing weary fatigued even out so if people are starting to realize that the stressful days ago and more frequent than the. Naw it really is a kind of a message from the universe to take a step back. And i'm really thinking. Yeah jokey by anything to add or comment or country or this point. I have to say that. I totally understand everything for me swim. That's that's what i am. I have found the last twelve months significantly stressed school. But i have missed that coping the eight now even the coping mechanism but that me the the swim with a repetitive consistent. Action up and down and ching my head you then to know whether you deal with the stress better or opens up your mind to thinking creatively about whatever that problem is but that's been missing and i can't wait till after the twelve day but again that's that's a compliment is a combination of factors that joe because you've got the physical movement so again your system your energy levels when you're swimming you can't really answer emails or talked on the phone or through social media the digital detox going on it's an opportunity therefore fear mind to be disconnecting and often. That's when we can be really productive because our mind you know kind of incubates idea soul of all of those things together and i guess as well for you because i know your mum a little bit of quiet time away from the demands of being you know three things all at once so all of that combined..

If i'm being honest some pretty crazy details about how this world we're living in is shifting. So can you share some of those details with fire nation in more importantly what you recommend we do about it three or four hours a couple moments. I think the biggest thing. You don't have to be a you know a brilliant to see that we are going through some major changes. The changes accelerating the way people look at life the way they work. They work their way. Think about families. All shifting was already happening because we have several ways that are heating. At one time we have a generational way. Baby boomers aging right millennials. Coming into a power. They've been raised differently. Make different decisions. We got that way that a gigantic were standing massively. Federal government usually quite about three point. Eight billion in taxes This last year. They've spent eight point two trillion s. Not the next six drilling. They're promoting its numbers that most people can never understand. I wanna take one second fire nation so you get it. When you get numbers that big we start using trillion and governments use the retrial billion. Or you member obama's mares billionaires even occur will sometimes use that price. You're not in the same universe millionaires and billionaires and certainly not true so let me explain a million seconds ago i want you to think in your own mind really make a decision. Don't just make me tell the answer. How long has it million seconds ago. Would you guess somebody will tell me. Twenty years to one hundred years we will say fifty days. The answer is twelve days. A million seconds to get perspective million in days million seconds would be twelve days ago. A billion seconds was thirty. Two years ago watch a trillion seconds is thirty two thousand years ago before man was known as man. We're almost saviors

WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar on a wild first year on the job

"Very excited Who is the ceo of mortar media online at jason. Hello peter how are you. I'm good. I don't normally have to do disclosures at the beginning of this podcast but here i have to say that Vox media is working on cnn. Original documentary and i'm involved in that in some capacity so we should clear that up right at the beginning But you know. I was working on a cnn documentary. I did not know that. All i ask is please make it a good one I will do what. I can Jason the last time we talked was december. When you announced that you were blowing up the movie business You didn't say that but a lot of dead You were gonna make all of your theatrical movies streaming day and date throughout this year. People freaked out about it You said it was going to workout. We're now a few months into the experiment. How has it gone. What have you learned. Yes so we're very happy with it. Peter i mentioned this publicly before but i'll restate which is where four movies into it and it's obviously year still but based on what we've seen so far And what. I've already shared publicly. We're very encouraged. And we're encouraged for a number of reasons number one. Is that for those people that are comfortable. They're showing up at the box office. And godzilla vs kong over the last twelve days is a great example of that around the world and people are clearly showing up and excited and consuming the movie selection that we have especially these new movies that you're referring to so i mentioned publicly a couple of weeks ago at our investor day that you know we're seeing that there are among the top titles on the service there helping with churn reduction and and certainly a lot of subscriber acquisition As well we mentioned publicly so So it's doing what we Anticipated and and certainly hope for. And i'm excited to share that.

"Yeah i mean if you look. I think we maybe every thirteen to fifteen inches of precipitation here a year. So you know if we get two to three inches. That's a that's a big star and really but you know we really need that to continue because because of the drought a lot of that which is good is going to soak into the soil and not a lot of it will be going into into the rivers and reservoirs so But we'll take anything we can. We're talking with miles. Bloom hard for collins colorado and yeah i mean even out here It was kind of weird. How there is like there was bands of of area. That got hit really hard a little bit east of greeley got hit. Really hard really really didn't seem to get that much and then for cons and level and like you talked about kinda got dumped on. It was an interesting store. Yeah anytime you have that low pressure. That's that's up in the southeast part of the state at wraps around and then so what happens it brings all that moisture from the gulf of mexico. Then you get eastwind. Goes up against the mountains. So you get the largest the foothills. They got up to four feet on the cameron. Peak fire burn area which is good and bad and then it kinda filters out fort collins gets a little more on the west side about two feet about twenty inches in the city. I looked really had anywhere from eleven to sixteen inches. When i saw so. And then you know in the planes that got a lot of rain Which eastern planes needed it a lot. So that's good for the farmers. Yeah there's no doubt about any of that miles bloom heart with the colorado and again joining us You mentioned The a little bit about now that moisture as soon as this melts That that runoff where they can't repeat fire happened. It's going to have to get cleaned up. Hurry yeah. I wind up on friday last friday up to Which is kind of ground zero. The biggest risk of flooding and erosion up there And i Talked to a person who owns property up there and they're concerned really concerned about buckhorn creek. Because a lot of the hillsides are basically you know scorched and the soil is sterilized. So they're worried now about that. Run off so that has been working on projects to try and mitigate that but you know they they won't be able to get in there until tell early april at the earliest and so they're really up against it so But they're they're trying to get in there. They have their projects prioritized. And you know we'll see if they can get it done in time well and as we talked about even way back when when this was all when the when the fires were happening miles we knew this day was gonna come. Maybe maybe happening a little bit earlier than we may have thought is that is that accurate You know the here's the problem. One hundred twelve day fire didn't end until december second. So there was you know they the the fire crews could could clean up some of that But there wasn't enough time for a lot of people to do anything and so now all of a sudden we're sitting here And these projects are now You know have been established but to be able to get in there and and you know try in You know increase the size of culverts and and do things like that difficult. When i went up the buckhorn road they were actually installing. These large culverts from the twenty thirteen sled. So that tells you how far behind they are yeah..

UCL Trouble for Chelsea?

"Welcome insulation of spnfz down. Thomas during the today by allie. Moreno gotten off coffee. You'll be hitter flags on a big win for you today but we start in the champions leaks good matches. Isn't it coming up over the next couple of days. We'll stop at looking trump. Let's go madrid against chelsea some other. The chelsea as favourite not six to four on to advanced next trying athletics. Eleven to ten men rapids. He absolutely flying in la league the first half of the season they have somewhat just a little bit foreign off. Course levante being very much thorn in that side. You're against on wednesday lost on saturday. Let's welcome shall we. Don't just sit low. Lo look ahead to this game. Say let's start off with a athletic perspective xiaowei. What's going wrong with them. They all right. I think we'll go move the wrong with them. In part was that this was likely to happen at some stage. Although perhaps not in quite this way bear mind. They've now dropped many points in twelve days as they had in the inside season up until that point but is in for full-on collapse in all four games. It's one victory to drills the fate as a site. that'd be on such good full. It was fifty four fifty seven points at fifty fifty seven points in the first half the season that it feels like a glass. I think in a way if you look at the results before this games way they were always on edge there again where they were just about coming through very light winner. You've are weiner out of s for example that going behind much more often than previously remember they concedes remedies minute behind in the entire season. That's not happen more often. They're conceding early goals. They gonna seven games in a row conceding so it was the probably some point tip slightly now not into a full blown crisis but certainly into a situation where they were necessarily gonna mean sign that level incredible efficiency in winning games that they had up until fruitful weeks ago and coming up against a chelsea side. Don still unbeaten under to call but very very ordinary against hanson. Yeah just methodical. The hard sites watch chelsea they get. The job done. Didn't against that in the drawer but they were hard. Watch nothing. thomas tickle early on. I think he's testing these players. Think he's testing. Mentality is testing the players and different systems. Put the weekend. He lasted fifteen minutes and took stripe off again so he didn't work took off the ball put about so it's a chelsea sought while you won't you come on west off whereas the where's the attack and fled just very very methodical. Caffeine phoenix can tighten me. I can't imagine be free flowing ends and talking football full three job so don just call chelsea methodical and if you think of you don't feel like hey look at them they're open. They're attacking they're going to commit number full and so therefore if you have an athletic team that has been struggling to get results and you have a team. That is quote unquote methodical. Then yes you're exactly correct. This is not four three. this is set pieces. This is very tied very tactical certainly in the first leg in which is going gonna make it physical from. They have to get back to that. They've lost a little bit of that and they've lost a little bit of attention to details in the game against the weekend. Golda was not scored by motorists early on. There's the ball over the top from set piece attack and said piece of mind on a mis-clearance goes over fifty yards and morales one one situation against like that doesn't happen against atlantic city. But it's been happening more and more often over the last ten days or so they have to clean up those details and clean those details where you're going to find something that is going to be very very difficult to beat

"Love that. One i love. I only watched the original What what powers do ghost house. Yep and this movie is a question. I have because we see multiple people ghost except for the main ghost war through walls. I never. I never seen daniel walk through. I don't know how many times we have to go back to this. Well he's alive but not the traditional sense what you want for again. He is office for twelve days. He can walk through walls. Why can't hard cane harry. Harry is not alive in a traditional sense. Are you sure he's a go. Are you sure yes. Because at the end of this movie everyone can see him and he looks just like daniel and can see of the whole time. He's imagining these people. No no no no kate. Kate sees him upstairs. Sees harry upstairs. Alonzo kate. kate sees him when he's in the bathroom. Good out or whatever and then at the end of the movie when when when when goes harry shows up. Ghost lily shows up. Kate can see them but they're the only people in the room. Are kate Human but not in the traditional way You know ghost. Harry and go slowly. Kate is the only one case. Casey's they take the form they're still not alive in the sense that daniel is alive. That line is very important. If we have tracy andrew on the show. I'm going to ask her because he's alive. No additional traditional sense is very important. Those two can manifest physical form. But they're ghosts. They're not alive as humans anymore. He has twelve days of being alive as a human. He's a real boy for twelve days. It's a selective pinocchio situation so he poops he does. If ten gina from poultry guy shows up. She can't do anything about it during those twelve days after that she can make that tween. That's right. Yeah she's gotta take those twelve days off what i yeah. Sure guys. but he's he's alive is sh. I got some At one point she's reading a book haunted ends of new england and the in it. Holly grove that. They're staying at his chapter three. So i need to know what's the first two chapters and maybe some other chapters in this book. Is it a whole book about holly grove in. Are there other maybe sequels to this movie that we can have with other inns in new england They would also they'd have to be haunted and also have goes to show up for twelve days so that i feel like those odds are low. Yeah alive and not the traditional. Here's the deal The next one. We laughed very hard. I can't believe you didn't bring it up The there at the party at the end of this movie and the caretaker. I believe he's talking to youngsters. They're like maybe eight ten years old. And here's what he says. i'm not an after. He says the camera pans to our leads but he says he's backed up very very loud. He says that's incredible. That's all you do and it just pains. What is he talking about secret to lie. Did this guy just throw out. These kids are just like giving him whistling. This guy's like that's incredible. It's incredible ads credit. Maybe you just go to third grade. You don't also work in the mill that's all you do. That's incredible incredible. Incredible twice we play. We play video games all day. So that's all you you livestream yourself playing videos and people pay you. That's all you doesn't credible supposed to do so. So you watch hallmark movies for a living and you talk about the same way. Every time i think ask you And lastly everybody apparently knows that. There's a ghost or at least that the holly grove in is haunted. I think we can establish that. It is a known that people think it's haunted or they know what it is. Actually how is no one from like ghost hunters or one of these shows how they never come out to do all of their dumb spirit tests like how they never done it like how they never it. How's it never been on record. Can we do a live. Show one year where we do it in a haunted house just to take off some ghosts too and i panda. Had we recorded a podcast in graveyard one. That's true we did we did. That's true story. halloween on halloween. Why did we do see biden. Have kids brands idea happened. Maybe eight years ago and it was it was pretty. It was it was scary. It was scary but you know. Sometimes you gotta. Sometimes you got area goes to be found. I mean we did see the traditional says. That's true we did see other people so who knows what is a ghost everybody relations congratulations. So we're we're next week. We're hopping over to netflix. "Pod that's hashtag and be our la dwp od. And one of the big stories from last week was game. Stop and it was everywhere. People were talking about that and we're actually going to get into that subject When we talk a little bit a pr coming up. but first let's dig into the legal side. I understand you've got quite the announcement that happened this week. Well i don't know if it's called announcement today. I thought this was kind of kind of interesting. So i wanted to talk about a decision of the ontario superior court here camera. Now you know i normally. I don't get into the sort of thing. But this case resonated with me and i i shared a post about it on linked in and i had enough feedback on it. That occurred to me that. Perhaps it'd be something that we should chat about on the show so you know the the case sort of speaks the difficulties legal profession. But frankly all all professions and what they're dealing with right now. So i'll i'll give you just sort of the coles notes version of the case so this was a landlord and commercial tenant dispute at a shopping center here in ottawa ottawa ontario canada and the landlord entered into a lease with a call center that had a conditional period expiring on on february. I entered into this agreement with them in january. Okay now hudson's bay company. I know you know the hudson's bay know it's one of those sort of great brands. Canadian brands that has actually made its way around the world. So the hudson's bay company here cam. They were the commercial tenant and they objected to the landlord. Leasing this huge footprint the mall to a call center in this huge footprint in the mall was previously occupied by sears and other company. I'm sure you're familiar with But of course sears has since gone. Bankrupt and hudson's bay was angry about the landlord leasing this huge space to call center because they thought that it would diminish the overall quality of the retail space. Which i'm sure it would naturally litigation ensues and on january nineteenth. The landlord advises the court that it's entered into this agreement with this call center and has the sort of this lee sort of hanging in the balance here which expires on february one. It's not sort of solidified. So given the timeline. The court said a january twenty nine hearing day. Well council for hudson's bay turns out Was scheduled in court on another matter. That day so counsel argued that even if if they weren't that really we're talking about a twelve day period and it wasn't an adequate enough time to prepare so they basically were saying you know we need. We need to have this. This adjourned and counsel for the landlord. This was when they took the position that no this was a serious issue. It was urgent and it needed to be dealt with immediately and that if council wasn't available to attend on the date of the hearing then they should attend court on the weekend and that's when something really really interesting happened so for hudson's bay Effectively you know. He had this to say said that young lawyers who have children at home during the week and a half to now supply them with the curriculum and feed and clothe and entertain them and practice law and do their jobs than asking them to give up their weekends to do litigation. Work is very difficult..

"But she's in that shot very specifically to give you that. Why did he say that. Yikes he must be really. Upset is let that slip. Yeah i i'm trying to find out how much it costs them to make this Looking to see him about some of the box box office stuff on here bought when it released. It only played in five theaters in new york. Los angeles and san francisco. Gross seventy one thousand dollars on. Its first day. I mean i'm not surprised. I mean i guess a little bit. Because i mean it is you know got a lot of big names. And you've got just as kinda captain at the helm i mean. It is shakespeare in there as a kind of a niche market place for that so totally surprised by that. I guess. I didn't even know this was a thing until we pick this topic. I didn't know this had been remade recently. I didn't either. Oh you wait. Is this your first. You angel. Well really am. I the only one who has seen this times. This is like my sixth viewing of this. Yeah i watched it today. This afternoon was the first time. I've seen holy cow existed until you guys brought it up. I'll tell you brought it up. Like i mean i. I don't. I don't even know how i found out about this. But it showed up on my radar two three years ago and it just i'm just clicked. I mean it's a. I think i think one of the things that makes it so approachable. Is you recognize everybody. You know nathan fillion plane dog berry. It's a lot of a lot of the characters that like. My girls have grown up. Seeing you know from our agents of shield from watching firefly from watching marvel movies and that sort of thing it kind of makes it a little bit less people against a little bit like i show in the nineteen ninety-three version. They're like oh yeah they recognized. Kenneth branagh don't really recognize anybody else because gilderoy lockhart was didn't have a lot of makeup on whereas Emma thompson had a ton of the glasses. And the hair. and everything else going on It's where the previous one was people on stage doing your thing this one. It's people that i recognize and people that i know doing this so i guess it's a little bit more of the girls i think between the two of them. They had more positive comments about this one because they were. It was more recognizable for each of the actors. It's accessible. yeah yeah. I mean i've not to defer back to basel herman's romeo and juliet but the same kind of thing you put people in it that the the younger generation is is familiar with and likes and they're more inclined to say okay. I'll check that out. Yeah then you get you get a bunch of teenagers and twenty something going. Have you heard of this shakespeare guy. I was like you like that. Try as you like it. You know it's but But no i mean it. This i think again is a very accessible accessible shakespeare. I mean the the thing that blows me away for the whole are all the whole whole overarching thing. Is that twelve days less than two weeks. They put this whole thing together and not like twelve days of concerts shooting shooting at night. Yeah shooting at night shooting when they can shooting rehearsing when they can. That's the thing that gets me is like all right there rehearsing when they can so these conversations and these lines were already embedded in these people before they started this up. Well when you say. it's it's emits. The shooting of one of the biggest blockbusters of the last decade. Yeah or one of the first giant blockbusters. I mean it's it's it's impressive. you know. I wonder if this was almost like a pallet cleanser. Yeah i use the phrase before about a bite..

"Elect joe biden tonight reacting to the news that president trump now says he will not attend the inauguration the president elect saying that's a good thing biden just twelve days from taking office today saying again. President trump is not fit to serve leaving talk of impeachment though to congress. And what about vice president. Mike pence who condemned the mob long before the president did. Will he be at the inauguration. Here's mary bruce. With calls to impeach president trump growing president elect joe biden. Today did not hold back calling trump on worthy of the office and an embarrassment. I've been saying for now well over year. he's not fit to serve. he's not fit to serve. Is one of the most incompetent presidents in the history of the united states of america. And so the idea that. I think he shouldn't be out of office. Yesterday is not issue and he had harsh words to for the president's supporters. Who stormed the capital there. Bunch of thugs insurrectionist white supremacist and semites. And they're terrorists domestic terrorist and that'll be a judgment for the the justice department to make to what the charges should be the different series. This had the active encouragement of city. President of the united states biden. Making it clear. He thinks trump bears responsibility for inciting the chaos. But instead of focusing on trump's fate says he's focused on the challenges ahead and hitting the ground running and on the news. That trump will not be at the inauguration. The president-elect said this one of the few things. I've ever agreed on a good thing. I'm not sure know all right. Mary's with president trump says he will not attend but a lot of focus on the vice president as well. Mike pence of course condemned the writers long before the president did the vice president. We all watch late that night. The senate chamber with harsh words for the riders. He was applauded by both democrats and republicans in that senate chamber any word tonight. Will he be at the inauguration. All david biden says that the vice president is welcome and that he would be honored to have him there adding that he thinks it's important as much as they can to stick to the traditions of the transfer of power. But tonight we're told the vice president hasn't decided yet whether or not he'll attend

President Trump Might Abuse Pardon Powers in Remaining Days in Office

"Trump still controls the pardon power for the next thirteen days or twelve days by the time people listen to this garrett. How likely do you think it is that in trump's final couple weeks the most imaginatively spiteful use of the pardon. He could come up with other than perhaps pardoning south in his children rudy. Giuliani is a kind of blanket. Amnesty to all the people who the justice department would want to prosecute in. Fbi one arrest. I think that that is not necessarily a sure-fire thing. But i would certainly put it into the more likely than not category that we're going to see in the next thirteen days and in fact i think we might even see it much more quickly than that because i think one of the challenges that we are seeing right now is rising calls for the invocation of the twenty fifth amendment by mike pence or the impeachment of the president. Both of which. I think are a highly unlikely scenarios but donald trump might very quickly feel that he has a real ticking clock a against his presidency and might be tempted. Act and remember. We have seen blanket. Amnesties like that before. Jimmy carter granted blanket amnesty to vietnam war draft dodgers as president to try to reset that political debate and allow people who had been caught up in that war for all variety of reasons to be able to re enter society in an open way but not to sort of quibble with at the premise. Of your question ben. But i i guess. I'm not really clear. Trump issuing those kinds of blanket pardons is certainly plausible. It certainly would be a grotesque abuse of power but they almost certainly would be val part. And to the extent that there are certain martin's it seems overwhelmingly unlikely that a new attorney general or deputy attorney general would be inclined to want to prosecute anyway and an attempt to sort of test those legal questions and so you know i don't know that trump issued a blanket. Pardon would would complicate things right. It would be a hideous abuse office. But what choice would the fbi or the justice department have but to say. We can't continue to investigate or prosecute people who who are covered by this pardon. Oh i think that's exactly right. I think they would have no choice but to say exactly that they would say exactly. That and the result would be that you had an attack on the capital for which. Nobody could be prosecuted. And i understand as we've been talking the first Case has now been announced or at least it has shown up on the docket of the court. Here in dc. Is that right Yeah i think that that first set of discrete federal charges have filed Against at least two individuals and in these appear to be pretty traditional sort of a salt charges for trespass and assaulting capitol police officers

"Kong than fifty pro democracy activists and politicians bethany ebrahim. Ian is accuses china expert. Bethany good morning. Can you tell us what's going on. Yeah so early wednesday morning up more than one. Thousand police officers fanned out over hong kong and arrested at least fifty three pro democracy activists and politicians. These are some of the most well known people in hong kong participating in hong kong's completely legitimate democratic elections and now they have all been charged with subverting state power anthony. China's leaders are actually feeling very confident and. I wonder why that's important to understand in the context of these arrests so with the coronavirus outbreak. Last year i mean. Initially that was terrible for china's global reputation however they were about able to control it very well and because of that china is the only major economy in the world who experienced significant economic growth. In twenty twenty. I think xi jinping is feeling like he wants to make hay while. The sun shines and this entire dramatic. Crackdown on hong kong has happened entirely during the coronavirus pandemic with that said i wonder how the events this week in washington were portrayed by the chinese communist party in hong kong there were huge protests last year. And that's a real sore point for the chinese communist party and so it showed photos of the chaos yesterday in the capital and it said that this was a beautiful sight to behold. That's something that nancy pelosi said on june fourth. Two thousand nineteen as a large group of peaceful. Protestors held a candlelight vigil in hong kong commemorating the nineteen thousand nine hundred eighty nine massacre. And so they were taking that line and turning it on its head and saying look at this beautiful sight to behold and so there were a lot of comments like that from chinese state media

COVID-19 vaccine arrives in Washington state

"First batch of corona virus vaccines have started to arrive in washington state ten months into the pandemic. But it's not going to change the situation significantly before the christmas holidays. People are advised to keep masking up and to practice physical distancing k. u. a. w. news anchor page browning is tracking the public health guidance and she joins us now for some frequently asked questions about the winter season page. Hi hey kim. So first of all the covid nineteen vaccine could start being administered tomorrow here in washington. How many people are expected to get at this winter. Yeah that's right well. What we know is that washington is expected to get two hundred twenty two thousand doses of the pfizer vaccine from now until january first and in total the state could get five hundred thousand two million doses by mid february so basically that means as many as a million people could have access to at least the first dose of the vaccine by about valentine's day but it could be much less than that depending on how well distribution goes and if maderna's vaccine candidate is also authorized right and just keeping in mind. There are over seven million people living in washington. It's still just a fraction of everybody. The holidays are coming upon us quickly. Hanukkah of is already underway. This week christmas kwanzaa other now. Eleven to twelve days away. So how can people best celebrate together safely. Well you've heard this before virtually is best. It's the safest at least if you do gifts open and video chat together. Do a food swap. Maybe caravan to see the lights. Something virtual and physically distance but we know some people will still gather in person despite public health guidance. So if people are going to expand their cove pod you do that by putting yourself in a two week quarantine and that should have started last friday if you plan to see your brother or mom or whoever on christmas day. And what about that shorter quarantine period. We've heard about from the cdc right well the the cdc and washington's department of health basically say this if you have to travel all of a sudden okay. Then you're your last case option is for you to quarantine for seven days. Then get tested for cove at the end of that with a negative result. All right well. Speaking of testing are the testing centers in our area. Ready for a pre holiday surge like we saw before thanksgiving well. I'll i'll answer that in two parts. Yes these free cova. Testing sites are ready for long lines of people. They're serving long lines of people basically every day already since the cases are spreading so fast in our state but this part two is public. Health officials don't want people just coming to get a test so that they can travel and to curb some of that behavior. The testing sites schedule has changed. So now you can schedule a kobe test. A couple days out but no further ahead of thanksgiving. You might remember. That was different people looking at cova test like or more in advance likely not for illness but so that they could have a thanksgiving event. Okay so the testing sites are prioritizing people who have symptoms of covid and i understand. There's a news site that's opening up. This week tells more about that. Yeah there's a new free testing site that's going to be the first on the east side opens tomorrow. And it'll be at bellevue college. This one's going to run monday through saturday and basically it's intended to serve. Yes bellevue but also is across a mesh. Maybe people as far out as north bend. And now we've got about a dozen free test sites in king county and as a reminder him their free sites they're funded by federal cares act dollars and those dry up january first anything else folks may want to know page kim. The outbreak is really really high right now. The highest it's ever been the daily average of new cases in washington is two thousand two hundred cases. That's how many people on average are infected every day in washington in march. The daily average was three hundred seventy. It's grim. But i will leave you this with this. There are brighter days ahead. That's what i'm trying to keep in mind. Local public health officials are hoping that now with a vaccine. This could be the last major holiday that will be under these strict

"Are you today. Excellent happy december. Absolutely i'm to leave. I'm going to lead the year out of that happy but you know happy december. The did you see the video. That ryan reynolds production company created about two days ago. Yes with devil and twenty twenty i. I've seen he says. I have not seen all of it but it looks really good zip So the story line for those who haven't seen it basically it's an ad for match dot com. Which is a dating site. And you've got the devil Who gets a notification on his phone saying that he's got a a match on match dot com and it's this girl who he goes to the meats and he says two zero two zero and she says call me twenty twenty they hang out together and the world's gown absolute crap and at the end this sitting side by side on a park benches asteroids flying in and hitting the earth the devils going. Be she to wind. And don't forget the required dumpster fire in the background. So yeah it's pretty indicative of this year. I think it is So how has your last. Seven days bain. My friend It's good a little busy a little. I had a lot of presentations this week. Which you know that's good. That's that's making money now and in pandemic time but i will tell you. I did something that i've never done before. So if you're if the listeners wanna check this out they can feel free to weigh in on this and maybe we'll talk about it next week. But i did a presentation for olympus yesterday run and You can see this presentation. It was a livestream. We did it on the olympics. The us olympics facebook page. So it's get ged t get. Olympus is the username. And i decided to kind of go out on a limb and they were kind enough to let me do it so they asked if i would participate in this twelve days of christmas promotion that they're doing and i said of course being and they said it'd be cool if you could you know do something about Doing like holiday portraits in creative things for holiday portraits and again. That's cool at sept-. I can't really shoot. Be because of this pandemic stuff and my wife is immuno-compromised song they're gonna bring a model makeup artist and that kind of stuff but the light bulb went off. I said i'll tell you what if you're game. I'd like to actually take it to the extreme and do our. But i don't wanna show any pictures at all. Wow a single picture. And i'm not gonna take any pictures so i'm going to do a one hour presentation about taking creative holiday portrait's and not show pictures and i'll admit they raise an eyebrow but they said hey we trust you you know your stuff so it's like okay and it was pretty well received so what i did just not scaring people completely is. I decided that it would be really cool to try and get people's creative thoughts going. So what i did show are lots of props but like you know the obvious christmas decoration things like to so garland nat but i had glasses drinking glasses and glass vases and i had some material things and i talked through all these different things that you could do to make your holiday. Portraits were interesting with the idea. Being that i didn't want to give people an example so that they could be lazy and just copied the example. I wanted to kind of plant an idea and really it. Any motion and challenge. And then olympus was was good enough. They agreed that we would run a little hashtag contest with it and The deadline is december twentieth. And the best shots that we pick olympus. Us and uk are going to share on their facebook pages and they're instagram stories. And then separately from olympus. I'm going to pick a one winter. The coolest shot the most creative idea that i find in the group and i'm going to do a one hour video consultation with them. Whatever topic they won't we can talk about their photography to a portfolio review post processing business. Whatever so so far experiments also good start it was it was pretty well received. There are a few people that were not happy that we weren't showing vigils. Most people actually commented if they thought it was actually a really neat thing because they were sitting there listening and they were actually able to imagine ideas in their mind based on where they're going to be for the holidays or based on their house and decorations. So we'll see i. You know i figure. Hey gotta take a chance. Every now and say in principle that sounds like the absolute ideal way to approach that. Because as you say the minute you put up images people are just going to go. How can i recreate that. It's what i want them to do. Is get away from those to actually get creative and yes right. So i i went to great lengths to really kind of describe my ideas in detail how i would go about doing them but i didn't want to show them ideas and i'll i'll make sure i share the link to the lies yea totally so it It was it was kind of fun doing it. I won't i won't lie. I was a little worried the whole time. Because as i'm talking to the camera i can't really watch the comments so i'm thinking all right she like this or they hate it. When i finish talking. I was almost afraid to look at the comments

Streamlining the Hiring Process for Nurses With Dr. Iman Abuzeid of Incredible Health

"The genesis of incredible health came from my background right. So i am an md a lot of friends and family members that are doctors as well who were often complaining about understaffing at the same time. My co founder. Who's a software engineer from. Mit import. lock. His sisters are nurses and they were saying. Hey i'm experienced and qualified and still takes me two three months to get my next job. I applied a ten fifteen places. I often don't hear back. This is a very common experience for nurses by the way even today and so we just figured there just has to be an easier way to solve this problem so essentially the problem you identified. Was this kind of the process. Right of hiring. Nurses was broken. Which doesn't make sense right because you would think you know with the shortage and hospitals needing nurses they would bring him on but hospitals are also big bureaucracies with lots of different challenges. So i guess it does make sense. You identified this problem. Which was the hiring the on boarding process and and all the bureaucracy involved. You decided to figure to streamline it and that was the genesis of incredible health. That's right and it's now expanded beyond just the place where a nurse finds the job. It's the place where he or. She manages their career. I mentioned continuing education earlier. We also have free salary estimators. We have a couple more services than are launching at the end of this year as well. That's exclusively for nurses. So it's it's really become the place where you manage your entire career on incredible health. Well i'm wondering him on. How does the business model work do. Hospital subscribe pay subscription fee to the site. Or do they pay you know. Every time they hire somebody you get a fee sort of kazakh model designed as a subscription and then that the hospitals are picking are selecting different. Tiers that are based on volume of one hundred percent free for the nurses when nurses go and work at hospitals. Do they tend to stay at the same hospital for a long time. Or is there high turnover. Are they moving around to different hospitals. Yeah so for our platform specifically we only do permanent workers right. We don't do any contract. Workers now look nursing in general is known for high turnover right so usually it's seventeen percent is a national annual turnover right now and so retention is also a hot topic and a very important topic for these for these employers as well and we'll try to do whatever they can to try to keep their nurses so let's go back to the beginning of this year. At what point. Did you realize that this pandemic is going to be a major problem and that the service you offer was was potentially going to be in high demand. I figured this out. Put this altogether. Probably in january february and now is because i was on twitter on and honestly the most amount of information was coming from epidemiologists. Md's and public health experts around the world because we weren't getting real time data here in the us so twitter twitter was actually the my source for figuring this out. I know you've got a team of about thirty people. You're based in san francisco right. We are headquartered in san francisco. Our team is in different parts of the country. So when you realize that this was potentially going to be a huge issue did you see an immediate spike in demand for your services. We did a certainly by april. There was a spike in demand for specific types of nurses. If you're an icu nurse. Or e deaners the hiring for that like increased by three x on our platform like right away and we saw a drop. For some of the other specialties because surgeries were getting canceled but since then since july august the demand for every single role has dramatically increased because not only are hospitals operating at full capacity also dealing with this pandemic. So how did you start to position your your company and your business to meet that demand so there were few things that we did We a few months ago. We launched what we call the pandemic hiring sweet right and what that is is a a range of features and tools that even more dramatically accelerates the hiring and really helps. The hospitals reduce costs because they had gone through some very severe financial hardship. Right so a couple of the things that we did was we added in automated interview scheduling remote interviewing. Because that's just what you have to do. During a pandemic in-app chats enhanced are matching algorithms. All of these with the goal of accelerating the hiring even further so we got down to twelve days now and on average we save every hospital that we work with at least two million dollars because they dramatic try to reduce their travelers costs as well as our overtime in asia. Our costs so essentially last year or the year before. If you were nurse using your platform you would have done and in-person interview at least one. You've traveled to the hospital. And that of course has gone away. That's gone so that's not even a feature anymore. Now everything is happening. Virtually correct and

The 2020 Election, a Discussion with Democratic Strategist Mustafa Tameez

"Hey everyone. This is diffuse congruence the American Muslim experience episode one, hundred, four I'm sorry and as always I'm joined by my co host Hey. Welcome back listeners I know we've been Nakanishi episodes out without much lapse, which is great on. But we wanted to have a very special show. I know we've talked a lot in the past about the election we've talked about Covid, but this is sort of the the the sort of ruminations of men Omer, who by no means experts, but this time. We are joined by a very special guest who is an expert in this field and so he is a political consultant and so omer. Why don't you tell us who we have on the show and we're super excited to welcome our guest to shout absolutely and we are T. minus twelve days from the election and honored to have most of the knees on the show. Is Outreach strategic founder and president you began his career New York using corporate clients. But after moving to Texas, he shifted to advising successful campaigns for state legislators, mayors, members of Congress in public institutions. The is a national opinion leader with over six hundred appearances on CNN and Fox News Msnbc and CBS. News. The Atlantic names as a top democratic consultant in Texas and Texas monthly person as one of the top Democrats to watch most of is the chairman of the Transportation Advocacy Group board a director of the Texas Lithium a member of the Unity National Bank board among other civic and business affiliations. He's also provide extensive consulting for the Department of Homeland Security End must've wasn't the show you'll have to educate me on the pronunciation of lithium. Texas likes you. Okay. Got It. So, welcome A. Twelve days away from the election. There's a there's a debate tonight you must be very busy. Yeah it's you know almost fifty million Americans have already voted. and as you approach selection day, you know by the time we reach election almost seventy five percent of voters have already bought it. So it election is a season more than his day and this this particular election cycle people are really taking advantage of it across the country we've seen record turnouts and so yes, all of us are are enthralled with it in our busy with an it's an exciting time. To be a voter and as a Democrat is in. I. That's the that's that's the understanding I have of your background in your take. Early voting is a good thing. Correct. Voting a whole is a good thing. I mean, I think fat I, mean Tetris. We became a majority minority state in two thousand, four, sixteen years ago But the the the representation whether it's in Congress with the State House or. At a state level is that reflective of the state's population and that's because Texas not a republican state or democratic state for years Texas has been a nonvoting sick. And as voter participation goes up. In the cycle, you're gonNA start seeing the faces and the backgrounds of those that we lack mirror more of the population of Texas and as as we see that across the country. Yeah. One of the things that we. I know at least a couple of weeks ago was kind of a new story was the governor Abbot kind of restricting where people could I think drop off mail in ballots rate I think it was sort of like Harris County, had the same number as any smaller county in West Texas somewhere. So has that has that improved any he he has made that decision in because of it. It again, it's it's an attempt to create. Chaos is an attempt to make it harder for people to vote. Right. Now the just like while we're on. The Texas Supreme Court just ruled that we can have drive thru voting in Harris County. This was a a contention and and literally just as I was getting on the court just ruled which is really important that if you make voting easier for people if you give people multiple options to vote. UC's turnout go up in this what we've seen in Harris. County. Turnouts going up everywhere around the country including Texas. But especially in Harris County because we Harris County has become a democratic counties of the last election cycle and because of that the leadership that's there. Wants to be inclusive wants to hear the voices of people that live in this county. And made many things easier including having drive thru voting like if you can drive through and do a banking transaction if you can drive through and an order the the best fast food. which we have in Texas because we are. Right. We should be able to vote. And I think that that's important. You know the this cycle I wanNA thank cove nineteen. People were given a task for covert ninety blood tests while they were in their cars. So we can do all of that white. Canton.

Biden and Trump spar in final election debate.

"Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, renewed his attacks on Donald Trump's handling of the corona virus pandemic at last night's final debate seeking to bolster his lead in opinion polls with just twelve days to go until the November third election the televised encounter from Nashville. Tennessee. Represented one of the Republican trump's last remaining opportunities to reshape a campaign dominated by a pandemic the disc- killed more than two hundred, twenty, one thousand people in the United States and devastated the. Anyone who's responsible for that many deaths should not remain president of the United States of America Biden said. Trump was far more restrained than at the first debate when he aggressively talked over Biden, defended his approach to the outbreak and claims the worst the pandemic was in the past showing no emotion or regret for the mounting death toll we're rounding the corner said trump who has played down the virus from months it's going away he said falsely. Opinion polls show most Americans disapprove of the president's response to the virus. Several US states including the election swing state of Ohio reported record day increases. In covid, nineteen infections on Thursday evidence. The pandemic is accelerating though trump trails former vice president biden significantly in national polls the contest is much tighter in some battleground states where the election will likely be decided. Trump was pressed on why Americans? Should support him if they're concerned about his comments on racial issues such as black lives matter I am the least racist person in this room trump insisted biden responded by saying trump was one of the most racist presidents we've had modern history. He pause fuel on every single racist fire Biden said noting trump started his two thousand sixteen campaign by attacking Mexicans as rapists. This guy is a dog. Whistle. About as big as a foghorn. Biden said Biden made a character based pitch for his candidacy saying he was anxious to see the results of the presidential election. The character of this country is on the ballot are character is on the ballot. Biden said relatively few voters have yet to make up their minds and trump's window to influence. The outcome may be closing a record forty seven. Million Americans have already cast ballots eclipsing total early voting from two thousand, sixteen election in the final minutes of the debate when the candidates were finally asked what they would do to address the climate crisis trump offered an alternate reality in his world fossil fuels clean and renewable power is problematic. His administration has cleaned up the Aaron water despite rolling back protections. Biden, presented a climate plan a sober. Why have three community cases suddenly popped up in NSW?

"So Norman in new, South Wales we had twelve days without any luckily quiet cases and we were feeling really good about it but then yesterday they had three new cases that were from community transmission and at least the reporting. That, we have at the time of recording current cost. We didn't think that they were actually linked to each other. So how did this happen? Well, you can only speculate eventually it will be explained we you would hope that it's not entirely a mystery that with genomic testing, we can find out perhaps what viruses their most closely linked to. So really won't stay a mystery for too long. So on the one hand, it's spread from known sources which are not, which is not readily apparent, but it is a worry because you don't wear they'd been you don't know who they might spread it to the just a lot of unknowns here. Even if you could say, well, originally did from the Crossroads Hotel and Salah or something like that all those weeks ago. The other thing that can happen with this virus is that it goes underground with asymmetric spread in a community. Of people who are younger to know they've got it or might not be coming forward for testing. So remember testing a New South Wales has plummeted and really far far too low when twenty or thirty, thousand people a day should be being tested at least twenty thousand and we're done below ten thousand and happy enough for a few days. So people are being tested and therefore we're going to get more and more surprises like this and in Washington states in the United States. Beginning this pandemic would underground for six weeks before papa game after somebody arrived. From China. So this is what this virus can do, and we've just go to keep alert. So three potentially unrelated cases maybe they are related, we just don't know yet. What does that say about how much more virus that probably is out there under the writer it obviously means there is more virus out there than we thought even if we know where it came from because reach, these three people were got to. Find out who the spread it to the last few days and really get out there and do a lot of contact tracing a lot of testing and hopefully people will come forward. So the Risto virus is there much. We don't know that's why they're doing sewage testing. You might remember that sewage testing did indicate a problem in south West Sydney the other day and Hawkesbury, but we find any cases in the Hawkesbury catchment. But this does mean there's fire is out there and you cannot relax. It also puts paid to this notion that we're going to go twenty eight days without community transmission before Boras Open Up. That ain't going to happen I. Don't think they ever get to that milestone to think so and so the tolerance of states like Queensland to do this is going to have to be a much higher tolerance than it is at the moment possibly even have to wait till the election so that doesn't become a political issue. So you think we need different thresholds for opening up again. Is that what you're saying? Yes, I mean I think that the key is you're going to get cases popping. Up like this, almost certainly, and the question is how much community spread has there been from name to others and do you know where that's come from and if you get the sense that New South Wales and hopefully Victoria quite soon knows where cases of come from who they spread it to and they're on top of it under on top of it quickly. Then the risks while the states really is pretty low, but it's not nothing. Well, there was some good news out of Victoria overnight where. that. Number of new cases has dropped back down again on these six new cases yesterday, and most of them seem to be clustered around these Chad Ston shopping center outbreak, which we know about. But there's a big group of doctors in Victoria who are against lockdown measures and they put out a open letter sort of saying that the lockdown measures are causing more health homs than they are good because people isolated that young people are being sort of stopped from. Going to school and socializing, and they're actually really low risk and that the risk of carbon to the general population is much lower than the risk of health negative health outcomes because of being isolated long these are serious issues and I'm sure these doctors care a lot about it. Some of them a little bit of overlap with a group of doctors who wrote to I think quarter magazine a few weeks ago stating similar things and it so we. Could problem I mean what do you do if in fact you had done what some people were arguing for, which is the end of September that the premier of Victoria should have really let foot off the brake both things go back to normal for all these reasons as well as for covering the economy. Then the predictions from the Burnet Institute's mathematical modeling was the the return hundreds of cases in a very short space of time I think that's been. Borne out when you've seen outbreaks like the chat stone shopping. Center outbreak and so on. So it doesn't take much for this to fuel up and I think that Victorians do not want to have gone through least Melburnians do not want gone through all this to have stop start going on and still having significant virus spreading. So I think that's the problem is that you've got the fuel for the fire there if you don't lockdown than the fuel can actually. Again and you can get significant numbers of people and the people. The people who are exposed are doctors, nurses, h care workers, even receptionists and others in care facilities. We haven't got that much better at controlling. It is just that we've got a bit better and they're still going to be vulnerable as well as the aged and infirm and I think the we said as a society that's not what we want and on the other side, there's no question that there's going to be mental health problems. Economic problems people are turning up late for the cancer diagnosis turning up. Late when they're acutely ill in the emergency department, all these things are happening. No question. The argument is a good one to make is just the answer is not simple, and if you'd let your food off the break earlier, we would have gone back to a major pandemic in Victoria very quickly as it stands, it's just getting under control and a few weeks from now, it should be much more under control a suspect it's not going to get to zero, but much more under control and the contact tracing testing regime should be able to control it with things like sewage. And testing of things. So don't think that we're too far apart on this but say right now we should be letting things off is probably a mistake and a he would be supported by any more balloons and just on that the number of healthcare workers in Victoria that are getting infected. We've got an update on that. Don't wait about numbers come right down. So things are getting under control. They're getting out of control on partly because community spread is under control. So people are not bringing it in, but really the major spread was within hospitals needs care centers themselves, and that is really is coming under control, which is a good thing. So

Great Moments in Communication!

"Sure is easy today. A quick pair of thumbs can easily send a text to a friend email someone around the globe or place a call to order a pizza. Each time you do any of these things information is being transmitted from one place to another faster than you can say Trans Atlantic cable. Trends stop already there you can stop. But if you have learned anything from this show, you should know that it wasn't always this easy. A device called the Telegraph. Was the first big development in getting information from one point to another. It changed things dramatically because it was the first time information didn't have to be physically carried a letter on horseback a note on a boat, even a message in a bottle. These were a few of the only ways to tell someone in another place something anything. Imagine how different life was and imagine how revolutionary it must have been when an electric pulse could finally travel through a wire and deliver a message to that person much more quickly. British scientists, William Cook, and Charles. Manson created the First Commercial Telegraph. That wasn't all they dabbled in. We'd stint also invented a new kind of Concertina squeezy Reed instrument sort of like an accordion, as well as the stereo scope Victorian Parlor device that looked like a funny pair of binoculars and created three dimensional images out of. Pictures printed onto changeable cards. If you've ever used a view master toy, it was kind of like that. Anyway, their version of the Telegraph used multiple wires to carry electric pulses, which would move needles on the receiving end. These needles would point to the letters on a dial. This would slowly spell out the words of a message letter by letter in one sense, their version was nice because it required. No special. Code or a special understanding from the operator you just had to know how to read but installing the multiple wires was expensive, inconsistent and difficult. So soon, Samuel Morse's single wire telegraph became the international favorite because the message was on a single wire. It could only send one letter at a time and it didn't actually use letters but something to represent letters a required people to use a code known as Morse Code. Operators had to learn a new alphabet of short dots or debts and long dashes or does of the code to get each letter which they would translate. It wasn't immediate telegraphs took time to send and receive as the letter by letter codes had to travel along the wire, but it was still faster than trains, horses or running really really fast almost as soon as Morse's telegraph debuted in the eighteen forties someone was. Like Hey, we should put one of these in the ocean and send messages to Europe at the time to send a letter from New York to London usually took twelve days of sea travel that's not even factoring in the time on land, the letter would need to be carried. So communication took a long time Samuel Morse believed in his creation wanted it to make a difference. So he said great idea. Let me help. Turns out running a wire across the Atlantic. Ocean was a lot harder than you might think. Or. Maybe your a reasonable person and you realized immediately that this was a super difficult thing to do. It was especially. So in the eighteen hundreds either way there was a guy who with Sammy Morris help was going to see that it happened no matter what got in the way. Name was Cyrus field and he got rich in the paper business. It wasn't under Mifflin that he founded but another real and frightening paper company that sold newsprint to the Penny Press tabloid newspapers of New England. The company did so well that he retired at the age of thirty four as one of New York's richest men. With plenty of life. was he dedicated the remainder to the transatlantic cable a wire to stretch across the ocean settled on the bottom deep below the water? This marvel to be would carry electric signals and deliver international messages in Samuel Morse's special code both America and England loved the idea and pledged support and some money he sold stock in his New Telegraph Company to help raise funds but mostly he put up his own sweet sweet paper making money to get the project off the ground or I guess underwater. We'll spare you the super technical details mostly because we are kids, podcasters and not electrical engineers but telegraphic cable had to be over twenty six hundred miles long to stretch from Europe to North America, and every one of the twenty six hundred miles of cable had to be insulated and protected from the rocky bottom corrosion from the salty seawater and any marine life that may cause trouble. So it was coated in latex then tarred hemp and lastly wrapped in heavy iron braids is took months for giant teams to make. In eighteen fifty seven nearly two decades after Morse's Telegraph debut two ships sailed out from the coast of Ireland and started to unspoiled the gigantic telegraph cable to the bottom of the ocean the mood aboard the British ship HMS Agamemnon and the American ship USS Niagara was probably bubbling from excitement. Those aboard watched the first of the cable disappear into the mysterious ocean, they must have known they stood on the threshold of a new frontier ready to connect two continents as never before with the power of one seemingly magical. The VIBRATO. The line you mean the cable we have to stretch across the ocean for the next few months it's only the first day. Broken just flopping around at the bottom of the ocean. Okay. So after just a few miles had been unschooled, the would-be transatlantic cable snapped undeterred. The brave crews used grappling hooks to find the lost

Surging US virus cases raise fear that progress is slipping

"Let's talk about alarming surges in corona virus cases across the United States yeah you know the U. S. south and the west raising fears that the outbreak is spiraling out of control and that hard won progress against the disease is slipping away because of resistance among many Americans to wearing a mask in keeping their distance from others confirming predictions of the easing of state walk downs over the past month and a half would lead to a comeback of the virus cases surpassed no that was cut off when we click on that cases surpassed a hundred thousand in Florida hospitalizations are rising dramatically in Houston and Georgia and stuff startling one in five of those tested in Arizona where Donald Trump is going to have a political rally are that one in five are proving to be infected over the weekend the virus seem to be everywhere at once several campaign staff members who helped set up president trump's rally in Tulsa tested positive as did twenty three Clemson University football players in South Carolina at least thirty members of the Louisiana State University team were isolated after becoming infected meat packing plants were also hit without breaks gene and I were talking before the show about the the women's soccer team that was I think it's for Landau Orlando pride they've withdrawn from the challenge Cup that happening here here in Utah because of numerous because really I think three players and four or five staff members of that team a Texas is among the number of states including Arizona Alabama Florida South Carolina whose governors have resisted statewide match requirements Utah we could put in with that as well it's not going well my friends it's not going well at all here in Utah Angela Dunn has urged governor Herbert to return coronavirus restrictions to the orange level statewide if Utah does not get down to an average of two hundred new cases per day by July first during the past week the state has averaged more than twice that many about four hundred and seventy new daily cases we're quickly getting to the point where the only viable option to manage spread and death will be a complete shutdown warns a memo from a doctor Angela Dunn the state epidemiologist the Utah department of health document which Dunn said was presented the leaders of the state's coronavirus response states that contact tracing and testing will not be enough to curb the rapid spread of covert nineteen the surge began twelve days after Herbert loosened restrictions by moving nearly all of the state to yellow or low risk status the memo notes on Monday the state reported four hundred and forty four new cases the twenty sixth day with more than two hundred cases this might be our last chance for course correction the
