Seventy five to miss this team almost be. You could argue. That gave tom brady his biggest test in the playoffs. With taylor heineke. This was a team that got. No quarterback play no quarterback. Play it all last year. They brought in fitzpatrick they brought in curtis samuel Who was a stud down there. And carolina brought in a cornerback. William jackson Brought in Adam humphreys is he relevant is. Are we gonna be talking about adam humphreys. Dfs this year again. No catching passes over the middle for not for w i'm weird and Of course in the draft. Yami brown James davis it seems like the defense is going to be good again James davis i. I like that pick. I think it's i mean you get started. I i guess talking about the defense. It was elite last year. It was one of the top units number one down the stretch in the second half of the year. But we do see this right when teams go from bad to good. They tend to regress a little bit the following year. I don't see them getting like double digit wins because of ryan fitzpatrick and i think the defense is good. But the offense. I think will still be limited because of the quarterback morgan eight. They could be a much better team and still have a similar record. I i think i think i think he's getting all the snaps for the steelers. He's looked so good in the preseason. Not but i don't know he's one of those things where i'll be like. I've done this before now. He's not who holds strong. Who thought about hangs not. We'd haskins. I was on the easy your last year or two years ago for me. It's painful because it's a player that you got rid of you know he's not. Don't worry i'm telling sure. Trust me now. Because he's look good. Yup that doesn't matter okay. Yeah you're good. "If you see it on replay recorded you don't have to buy game pass or anything like that and then the next time you have a few minutes. Just watch a little bit at a time. That's what i do. I have five kids. I don't have a lot of time to just sit down and watch tv. I literally turn off the. Tv's on before. I turned off. I'll turn on the game. Watch a few plays watch a series of drive and then i turn it off and just a way you to watch something different. I know dave scofield. He talks all the time about how he'll go back in. Watch a play twice especially in the preseason the second time he only the offensive line and i started to do that too. And you learn more about it. You see more things do you. Don't just watch the ball. I remember my friend and he was the friend. I've talked about him on the show before who passed away from aol about five years ago going on six years coming up. That's incredible when i think about it and he was just very novice football fan. And i'm not an expert in any stretch of the imagination when it comes to the game the way it's played but he was what we call a football watcher. He only followed the football so we will be watching the game. And let's say the steelers are on defense and he would watch the opposing quarterback or the running back. Whoever has the ball. Being they just need repetitions together. I would probably play a lot of my running back depth. Maybe now's when the focus should go to the regular season and that's not to diminish these young players that are trying to make the team but we're talking about players that are either going to be on the sixteen van practice squad or we're talking about players that are literally just going to be fringe players. I think he's that guy I'm not a big fan of the wide receiving core for the lions. I mean i think could be okay but the lions are just not going to be a good team this year. Goff lights to You know target the tight ends back when he was with the rams you know between be an everett i think hopkinson can definitely benefit from golf being as qb. Obviously it is definitely a downgrade from stafford. But i think awful target. The tight ends a lot more You know just. Because i feel like the receivers you know. It's a little a little iffy with them. But yeah after that Like i said logan thomas. i think he's going to do really well with With fitzpatrick i think this could be a big year for him as well. I think he can do more of the same of what he did. Last year. You know and this was with alex. Smith is as quarterback and twain haskins. Now let's see what he does with fitzpatrick who you know. I think is a more explosive quarterback. Now i've talked about the inconsistencies with fitzpatrick a lot. But i do think there will be a lot of games where fitzpatrick does really well in. The offense will definitely benefit from that. So logan thomas other tight end I also of dallas goddard. It was. I was debating on it as going through the tight end. Listening listing for here too. But you know. I think zakar. He's not going to have to re establish himself as a tight end until he does that. I'm kind of just going to assume that. God is going to get the bulk of the targets in terms of the tight ends and you know when he plays a decent tight end. It's just you know last year he did. You know deal with injuries. He missed the handful of games. But you know when he played he was decent and i do think that a lot of people will be drafting him. Hi this year then. I was wherever albertan. I mean he was great last year with the packers really Came on strong towards the you know the kind of the middle end of last year. You know scoring five touchdowns in five consecutive games. You know Obviously had that three touchdown performance in week. Four kind put people on notice and then he kinda cooled off In the middle of the season and then towards the touchdown in five straight games you know so. I think that definitely really helped him. So i think he could definitely repeat what he did last year. And then i put noah fancier noah fan definitely a guy that i think a lot of people are hoping he can you know. Take a jump in be that tight end that a lot of people are expecting him to be hopefully But hasn't really shown that You know is okay But we'll see. I mean the way. The broncos offense looked you know in that preseason game if that's what's to calm i mean broncos team is going to be dangerous and i was saying how the giants are definitely gonna win week one after that. I know it's preseason. But after that i mean i was like i. I don't know but we'll see again. It's only preseason. You know the titans from new england. I think would hurt them as obviously they're going to be splitting targets. Kind of i mean jonah. S- is going to be the guy that's going to move the change. I think in hunter henry is going to be a guy that you know will be in the red zone big red zone target but the other thing is both these tight ends are hurt right now. So that really hurts new england because these guys are really going to be the focal point of this offense because you know you look at the wide receivers. The wide receivers are not bad. But i think the tight ends are really knows. What's going to make this offense successful mike. I put it to your three just because inconsistencies you know. I think that you don't like he has a tendency. You'll put twenty three points and then the next week a put up eight. I'm looking at Six statistics from last year week. "Camp recap podcast. The pittsburgh steelers were back at practice. Wednesday at heinz field. It was an ugly day weather wise but a good work day for the pittsburgh as they wrapped up their public slash open portion of training camp. No more practices open to the public. They will practice on thursday in the morning at ten thirty practice and then that is it. They won't be practicing friday based on the fact that they play the detroit. Lions at heinz field on saturday and then following the game. That's it training. Camp is a rap. They will have one final game to prepare for all that preparation will be on the ups's sports rooney complex. Not even try said that correct. I think it's cheap. Emc rooney's sports complex. That's where they'll have the rest of their preparation before they have to cut their rosters down from eighty to fifty three and then once they get to fifty three. That'll be it for the regular season barring injury so it's time that we talk about what happened today in practice before anyone says know. Is this the last. Training camp recap podcast. I'm not sure if the me is going to give us a lot of information about training camp practice on thursday. Then i will absolutely be doing another training camp. But this is a run team. They're gonna use the tight ends. Dallas goddard's eckerd's at i if i'm an eagles fan. I'm a little frustrated. I'm excited about what hurts. Does a full season of jalen hurts. There is buzz. There's momentum were moving in the right direction you would have liked to have seen maybe a wide receiver addition in free agency do those massive swings quite yet. You can have an eight eight season you can have attendance sixties and you can be improved you can get better and then when we spend the money to bring in those guys now. I expect you to win. There's age and all of that there but mason rudolph is under contract beyond this year. So that's the interesting yeah week. That i'm playing in like i recently concluded the draft or twenty eight rounds. Where like you go to the end of it and you're literally drafting like anybody. Yes i mean. I'm telling you it's like anybody's getting draft like stephen montas is getting drafted in that league. The washington third-string quarterback. So i'm like oh watkins. That could be on the radar. That's the guy you know what maybe one last thought. Actually and this probably like. It's probably a year away but ramachandra stevenson from the patriots. Their fourth round. Pick out of oklahoma had a ninety one yard touchdown run. It was one of two runs he had last night. Maybe he's a important name to file away if you do play in a keeper or dynasty league because james white sony michelle brandon. Bolden are all going to be free. Agents next off season it could be the damien harrison ramachandra stevenson are competing for carries just a year from. Now it's pretty good player as a pretty good player i. And i'm recording this early in the morning on friday morning After the game just do the work having recorded late. I really don't like these thursday games. I'm glad this is the last one but here. We are talking about the winners from the twenty four to sixteen victory in the first on. My list is pretty pretty easy. I wanna dwayne haskins twain haskins. Listen to this stat line. Sixteen for twenty to one hundred and sixty one yard. Seven point three average one touchdown no interceptions with a rating of one zero eight point. Three now you be saying sixteen to twenty two one sixty one. It's a ridiculous stat line. He played maybe the tail end of the first quarter the whole second the third and then even into the fourth based on the fact that the steelers had the ball at the end of the third and they wanna let him finish the drive that drive ended up stalling out But he got the steelers in the red zone. They were moving the ball. Well he was finishing drives only one drive that he ran into the red zone. Finished with a field goal. Another touchdown and i tried to explain this in. It's tough it's tough to put into words but if you're someone who watches the steelers you actually watch the games. I mean pre-seasons different not every games on tv if you get sunday ticket from direct tv you're not guaranteed to get every game. If you're able to watch this game you would see. The dwayne haskins just looks comfortable and again. I can't really put into words. I'll do my best. But i can't really put it into words. Exactly what i mean. Dwayne haskins just looks like he is comfortable and mad candidates offense. You can call him captain. Check down whatever you want. He made the throws that he should have made. And he had a misfire early in the game. I think it was second quarter. And i said on twitter that he threw a ball and he scrambled his left rolled out. And he's mobile enough. He's not a running quarterback but he's mobile enough. He gets outside the tackle box. He has a throw against his body. It's difficult throw to make. I understand that. I wasn't the the direction of the throw. The receiver opened by by. Gosh he threw it ninety nine miles an hour when all you had to do is just lob over the linebacker get a first down and move the chains. It almost pass. Everything settled down everything. Slowdown looked good. Making the right reads. He was able to get the defense to jump off. Sides in the free play was his lone touchdown pass. Dwayne haskins looks good. I would love to see it. I'm not calling it. I don't think it's going to happen. I'd love to see on saturday in the steelers. Third preseason game against the detroit lions by the way. Mike tomlin said the ben rothlisberger is going to play. That shouldn't shock anyone. There i'm not saying he's first round or but maybe second. He could be a big deal this year. Also mike parsons on the defensive side who i liked. Who is one of my three for the broncos to take ten he. He looked pretty good. Some big hits three tackles in that game. But he's he's going to be. I think dallas actually is going to be pretty good this year. I mean you get dak prescott back fully ready to go that wide receiver. Core looks good. The offensive line looks good. The defense looks pretty good. My big question for dallas is like can ezekiel elliott bounce back to being one of the top running backs and league on the aside for pittsburgh twain haskins. Get another shot after just never worked out with washington. Dwayne haskins wins eight of thirteen and fifty four yards mason. Rudolph on the other hand. Seems like he's been there for a while. The former big danny used to be the steelers he got into it with isaiah bugs and also cam hayward on consecutive plays outside of the fact that if i were giving dan more some advice i would say. Hey maybe pick who. You're gonna fight a little bit better not so much bugs. But i wouldn't want to get into a scuffle with cam haven. We'll put it that way. But dan moore junior a lot of people that when he they drafted it and he was drafted by. The steelers felt the more lacked that tenacity that he lacked that Really the ability to be that hard nosed. Just get after a type of offensive lineman. Well maybe he's proving to the coaching staff that that's wrong. Maybe he's proving the he is more than capable of doing just that and so maybe this is the first step for a young player just trying to make a name for himself in the national football league. That was not the only play made. There was no worthy robert. Spelane proved that he can do more than just hit. He had a beautiful interception of mason. But also it was noted that melvin ingram was lining up multiple multiple spots and positions on the defense He obviously can rush from the outside. He'd been outside linebackers since he was drafted but he also was a standup rusher over the a and b gaffes of on the offensive line. He is someone that can play inside and outside and ingram said whatever the steelers asked him to do. He'll do it and if that's the case obviously he'll do it. Kevin dodson is a player that has been out because of injury something minor in approved to be minor based on the fact that he has not returned team activities but he was working out today at a helmet for the first time and it looks like he just knows some type of tweet. I think my thomma might have used that word. And he is listed as a starting left guard on the initial roster so hopefully kevin dots and can make his way. It's not a big characteristic thing for the steelers to bring in someone you know. At his age he's thirty two. You know at this point of his career on a really on a big deal. It sounds more like a smaller contract. Possibly just one year. You know veteran minimum or or small two year to year. Deal where you can push some of the money into the second year things like that. It's just really interesting. I don't really know what they're going to do that. But i mean you say about. He had the injury struggles. Did have a four year stretch from twenty fifteen to two thousand eighteen where he didn't miss a game. Yeah it i mean so. It was early in his career and then it and then it was the last couple seasons where he struggled with that. So it really league is gonna come down to. Is he going to to be willing to do what the steelers want him for. That's what to me. That's that's the alternate thing right so we're going to spend it on a ton of time on this. That's not what the main crux of this podcast is all about. We're trying to get you ready for training. There's it's a very low risk Dwayne haskins we all know that but we know that joshua dobbs can play but we also know that joshua is a player that was traded last season so he wasn't even valued enough to keep him on the roster twain haskins e bring him in barring him completely falling flat on his face which could happen by the way in the preseason i think twain haskins makes the team. Maybe they trade joshua dobbs again. I'm not sure it depends on what else is out there but so we both have three players. You have dobbs. Let's go to running back dave. You have running back. i have them going with keeping. It's funny keeping quote unquote extra whether they even had more than this in the past. They've gone with this few three. I have them with four. I've got the the obvious nausea harris. I do have benny snell junior. Anthony mcfarland and jalen samuels. Because once again i i kind of put the kaelin balaj into the same boat as dwayne askins that he's going to have to knock somebody else out of there. I saw until. I can really see what he can do. "The steelers preview we went live and we predicted the schedule. And i want to say. I had them finishing about twelve and five. Remember seventeen game schedule. That's gonna it's gonna take me years to not say oh the finish nine and seven or something like that so i think i had them winning about twelve games even if they won eleven games in comparison to last season. It's gonna look horrible. But i just want to remind everyone. It is a tough schedule. But if the i still think last season if they would have faced some on field adversity earlier they faced adversity. My goodness no one was impacted more from covert in the delaying of games and changing of by weeks. Then the pittsburgh steelers no one no one not even close so they had versi last year but it wasn't on field adversity. They never had that game where they should have one and they lost and you learn from it and you get better from it and we all say it. It's better to win lose. That's true you can. You can never say that. It's better to lose in a win but sometimes losing can bring out character. Losing can be the best educator possible and the best to really get yourselves focused and get your mind right last season when they were eleven to know everyone was riding high and and all this stuff and winning. "The washington football team released their quarterback dwayne haskins. He's a second year quarterback out of ohio state and it's pretty rare for a guy drafted in the first round to be. I mean especially at quarterback drafted in the first round to be released less than two full years into their career. It's kinda crazy almost never happens. And i really use the word. Almost is funny. 'cause i almost didn't want to even make this topic. I almost didn't wanna talk about it. And i'm like i have to because people are going to want to hear an updated thought of some kind. I've covered dwayne haskins a lot this year in the offseason. I feel like i've talked to him. A bunch and the reality is that i could tell you that. He's he made mistakes here and there and i could list all the things. He's done wrong but the reality is between twain. Haskins just makes me very very sad disappointed and man. I like low key. He dug his own. Dwayne haskins made mistakes off the field. He made mistakes on the field. Poor play poor decision making in every facet of his career and like he was a guy who was immature off the field. If he got in trouble had code violations had all kinds of stuff he like unprepared. Week-to-week playing games. I don't know what's going on with the guy. I wondered at times where his dad because you would think somebody would be in his ear telling. Hey jude you gotta understand the opportunity you've been given in the nfl. And dwayne haskins is a guy who has a lot of talent who only started one year in college. You came in a little bit. I think too early to the nfl and clearly was unprepared for the responsibility of being nfl quarterback. And i don't know how you look at this. It doesn't make you sad because it's a guy again who it's a missed opportunity. And i know people are angry and washington fans or like screw. This guy he look on human being level. I i look at him and go man. He's going to have a hard journey like he's he's very rich and that's really cool I know he bought his mama house. I hope he bought it in cash. I hope it's paid for. I don't know. I think he's going to have a hard journey. I don't know whether he's gonna get another opportunity on another team. You would think that some teams going to take a chance on him. But the biggest red flag you can have for a quarterback is that he's not a good decision maker that he's immature off the field and he appears to be that kind of guy who like throws the ball well enough to be an nfl quarterback but throwing the ball is not at all what it takes to be a quarterback and I i don't know man. It's concerning. I know that when he came into the league the rumor was that the owner wanted him but the coaching staff did not add. It was kind of a a problem from the start and dwayne haskins. Never really he was never like very impressive at all in washington. And it's just a sad story of the guy who i think again didn't understand the responsibility. NBA Draft 2019: Latest 1st-Round Order, Predictions
"And ladies and gentlemen, we have a new mock draft out Mel kiper Jr's three point. Oh is here with us. And we are looking forward to the draft. Mel will join us in just about an hour to talk about the new mock draft. But there have been some changes in the draft specifically one less quarterback. Now going in the first round then in mel's two point oh mock draft. So we have four in the two point oh mock draft with Daniel Jones from Duke rounding out of the last pick of the draft to the patriots in the first round of thirty two. There are only three quarterbacks now in the first round, according to mel's latest mock. And obviously a retirement might be a big reason why and the quarterbacks have changed as well. Right. As far as where they're they're going. Well, Cuyler he still has Tyler going number one derozan. Well in his last draft Cuyler going number thirteen to the dolphins. So now and this draft he hasn't going number one. He had. Dwayne Haskins going number six at a giant Kyle Murray. Going number thirteen to the to the dolphins. Drew lock going fifteen to the Redskins and Daniel Jones going thirty two to the patriots. So as you mentioned Daniel Jones now out of the first round, according to the latest mock draft by Mel kiper, just three quarterbacks Murray number one. The main says Dwayne Haskins at number six, and you start to hear reports that the giants may go defense was six and then was seventeen go quarterback. But right now twain Haskins at six and then drew lock sitting there at number thirteen for the dolphins. Does the only three quarterbacks in this latest first round. Yeah. Going to be very interesting because we know what the giants listen one thing. Dave Gettleman has made very clear he does not feel beholden to tell us his plan. And so I don't feel overly beholden to believe. A lot of what we're hearing coming out of the giants can't because if you've got a guy who's basic messages trust me, I got this. Well, then we understand he doesn't feel like he has to tell us the truth. So as we hear these things. Coming out. We also understand this time of year is about deception to an extent it's trying to manipulate the draft order trying to manipulate the opinions of certain players. So that you can try and put yourself in the best position to get the guys you ultimately want. So it makes it difficult to try and read the tea leaves it is although I have to say on cattlemans behalf. He said all of last spring saquon Barkley is a generational talent with the second overall pick. And that's where he went. Look, I think we all agreed. There has to be a quarterback in the giants future. Whether it's at six or seventeen trade now Cleveland, but it would not surprise me in the least if Dave Gettleman waited until the second or third round to take a quarterback this Dave Gettleman, he created that created, but he he made the term a more of a vernacular in the NFL draft hog molly's when he was the GM of the Carolina Panthers. He loves the big guys to hog mollies. And let's be honest. This draft is going to be decided outside of Kyla Murray. More than anything else about the big defensive lineman in this draft. The hog Molly is on the defensive side of the ball. So depending on your draft grades for your quarterbacks you could take one of those at six and then a quarterback at seventeen it all depends again on your on your draft great. If twain Haskins is highest on the board and draft grades. You don't pass that up. If you have a Dwayne Haskins drew lock. And whatever other quarterback equal in grades. You know, maybe use that seventeen pick baby can trade it up somehow to get one of those guys as I said, this always comes down to grades. Do. You have a choice amongst grades. Are you close enough in quarterbacks where if you don't get one you try and get the other? But we'll see we'll see, you know, one of the biggest changes in from the last two this for Mel was they had the patriots taken Daniel Jones a quarterback, and this one I serve Smith junior the tight end from Alabama going, and that would not be shocking at all you have really three out of the top tight end Hopkinson the kid from Iowa teammate, Noah Fant, and then Smith junior all three likely to go in the first round a three first round tight end to on the same team come on. And what would that tell you as we saw? The patriots jump into the first round and take a running back and Sony Michelle at the end of that. And now to see in the next year three tight ends going. We've talked about this. However, you want to split it. Last year were Quinton Nelson. Went in the top ten in the draft as an offensive guard. We saw roquan Smith going the top ten as a middle linebacker. The middle of the field is worthy. NFL is being built right now. And other teams are starting to catch up to what the patriots have done for years. The way that we've seen teams export that specific area and three tight ends in the first round would hammer that home not denying that. They are guys that are certainly probably more talented than usual tight end groups. We're used to seeing but it's also about value. It's why you see running back taking it to overall by the giants last year. I mean, the other thing is I think they're more interior linemen in this first round then quarterbacks right? Like, a not tackles guards and centers. There are more of those according to males latest mock than there are actual quarterbacks being taken which would be very unusual. So the top five in this new draft that Mel kiper put out is Kylie Murray. Number one of the cardinals Nick both the D N number two to the forty Niners. Number three. Josh Allen the outside backing backer pass rusher going to the jet number four Cornyn Williams. To the raiders and number five guy making a pretty big jump. Devon white going to Tampa Bay at five in the last mock draft he was number eleven to the Bengals now in mel's draft. He is sitting at number five number six twain Haskins seven Joon Taylor. The offense attack from Florida going to Jacksonville sweat, the D N going to the lions at eight Sean, Gary the D N going into the bills from Michigan and TJ Hopkinson. The tight end going to the Broncos at number ten. Here's here's what I wanted to talk to Mel about and one of the issues that I have laid on me big fella with with this draft comes, you know, some some point and one of them is there are few prospects in new first round projection who are making their debuts because of their combine performances. There are four guys who have jumped into mel's first round who weren't out there before again based on the combine combine performances. I don't understand that. I don't I don't understand that. If you wanna say. You looked at the combine to go back and look at tape of them. But to say, they're combine performance jumped them up that doesn't compute to me. Well, I think that's I think that's the assumption though, is because of their performance you went back and look and that. That's fair. That's why I want to ask them. How did this? Make you go back and study them more. Because if you're just basing things off the combine I got a real issue with that. Yeah. I I don't think you would do that or teams. But at the same time, you look at the positions of the majority of the players that would be involved in that. And I think this could be true for teams as well. It's interior offense. It is right. Three interior offensive linemen Terry McLaren the wide receiver, but when it comes to interior offensive lineman. You wanna talk about an area where the scouting grossly lags behind to actually great and overall draft. It's a difficult area for a lot of people to see and understand because you don't have the benefit of a lot of stats. You don't have the benefit of even the combine members necessarily always translating to production. So when those guys go and they paying and they flag in the model somewhere for what they do at the combine. And then you go back and spend some more time looking at a guy like Lindstrom who wasn't going to be a big name. He wasn't like, you know, Gary bradberry from North Carolina State won the Remington award this year. Like that guy was a stud Boston College was a middling. Okay. ACC team this year. So Lindstrom wasn't getting the credit. He deserved even being as good as he is. So you go back now, and even these NFL teams, maybe we're late to the party on some of these guys all of a sudden start giving them an extra. That's why I want to ask I just wanna make sure with Mel that because I'm just reading from the combine performance, and again, let's put a name. To those you mentioned McLaren the wide receiver who is one of the others. Chris Lynch reminder, you just mentioned from Boston College now. Number twenty one to Seattle Eric McCoy interior linemen going number twenty two to Baltimore. Right and the Garrett bradberry. The Senator from North Carolina State who is you mentioned one the Remington award is the best center in the country number thirty one to the LA Rams where they have an aging center, and John John Sullivan. And that was that was one of the things have been saying for the Rams the last couple of years that dynasties been built on the interior. If you land a guy like that good, Lord or you winning out it is. So we'll see how that plays out.
