"A mosquito control plan that's incredible and so you know we were talking before about the fact that bats winter often if they don't migrate that they winter in Caves So what is there kind of I? Guess what are their habits in the rest of the year you know. Why do bad houses work? They're out at night. When do they sleep it? Why DO THEY WANNA be as? That's need extra warm stable locations for rearing their young in an okay. One of the keys to success in bad houses placing them in the right amount of Sun. Pay The right color so that they absorbed the right amount of. Hey it's gnaws trick is it made sound but Good bad houses are made appropriate to the latitude in altitude. Or they're going to be used so that they absorbed the right amount of heat. Bats like surprisingly warm places for their young. They can't find those generally in caves here in Texas. We have free tail bats of form huge colonies and actually the case where they live. Bracken cave which houses the world's largest remain calm has more than ten million bats and Those bads each have a body temperature of about one hundred and two degrees Fahrenheit their shared heating their body. He is so strong that when I've gone into the cave it feels like I'm walking approaching radiant hater as I walk closer to a wall because the heat renewed by the bad spots and the bats have hated that cave every year for probably thousands of years so that a cave that would probably be a cold air. Trapped without the bats in would probably not rise above the seventies in temperature. is actually so hard. That's hard for human to stand it. It can be close to a hundred degrees because of shared hating so the bats the do live in caves often have to form very large numbers in order to properly he threw for rearing young and that can be a problem too because when deplete their numbers there may in many cases come a threshold below. Which when the numbers are reduced past that point then the bats can no longer successfully were young at that location right and so we can in many ways provide like almost these little satellite areas throughout our cities throughout our counties. Where is it an individual Family is a group of adding. It seems like bats are obviously very social since they roost in like you know groups of thousands so why would that be interested or a small cluster? Bats be interested in a small house on. Somebody's property will the houses that hold at least a couple of hundred are preferred. But what you make here. Is that a house. It's only a couple of feet wide and a couple of feet tall and maybe six inches deep from front to back can hold hundreds of bats. Wow they we put Politicians inside that Provide crevice roofs. And the bats. Roosted about more than twenty per running foot those crevices and so in a in a house. Let's say eight inches or so deep you might have several two foot wide grosses and that adds up to hundreds of beds very COA and and is this something that you know my listenership for the show. Obviously because I am here in the states the vast majority of my listeners are also in the states but I do have a pretty big following In the UK in Australia New Zealand South Africa. And then You know in actually non English speaking countries all over the world so starting with the US but then spreading out throughout the world are there bats like in every locale lake just different species that are specific to pretty much anywhere would be listening right now. You can find bats just about everywhere except in the most extreme Aaron pro origins right very cool so pretty much anybody who is interested in building a little sanctuary or purchasing a little sanctuary and putting it on their property in the appropriate way can Can invite bats to their to their home. Incidentally that Website that I just mentioned selecting a Quality Bad House. We also list a number of Bad Houses we've particularly approved are known to be extra successful at attracting bads not being on. That list. Doesn't mean you don't have a good bad house but The ones on that list are definitely checked and tested by me. Personally very cool. Is this something you know a lot of people who are at home right now and you know some people are lucky enough to working From home some people unfortunately have to be working out in the community because they have essential services but then a handful of people are very unfortunately under employed right now unemployed furloughed. You know At home Trying to stay active and stay busy during this really difficult time. So you know as a project People can build our own bat houses cameras Roy.

He's written a few but his most recent book is called the secret lives of bats. My Adventures with the world's most misunderstood mammals. Sa- guys without any further. Ado Your he is Dr Merlin Tuttle. Well Merlin thank you so much for joining me today. I'm delighted to be here care. Oh good me too so you know. This is one of the first recordings that I've done kind of well. I guess that's not completely true. But but one of just a few that I've done in the depths of the cove in nineteen pandemic. A lot of the recordings have aired since. We've all been Kind of social distancing physical distancing we say or sheltering in place I had recorded prior to things getting really really bad and generally speaking. I've been trying to avoid doing Kovic topical podcast because I feel like we're all being really bombarded with Kovic News right now but at the same time It was brought to my attention that you would be a great person to talk to specifically about Some of the misunderstandings about animal reservoirs. But of course I WANNA get deeper into that and talk about all things bats more generally because you are the bad guy role. I'm always happy to talk about beds. How how do you like having that kind of That kind of Monica. Like everybody knowing you as the bad guy well. There are a lot of old timers Napoli. That never knew me by anything. Other than the Batman. And so when you were first coming up you know studying in in university and doing your your field research. Where were you stationed throughout your different investigations? Roy obtained my PhD at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Kansas but I did most of my feel work in the southeast particularly in Tennessee in Alabama and Florida vary cool. And where are you living? Now I now live in Austin Texas Tech says I grew up in Dallas Texas. I just love Texas. I remember growing up and going into the hill country where my grandparents lived in Caravelle and being out on a little road on the lake next to their house and just seeing so many bats overhead. Well I certainly enjoy loon in Texas. Of course I particularly enjoy Austin because we have one and a half million bats living under our Congress Avenue Bridge and I'm very proud to have been the person who got them saved when people were frightened into wine the Medicaid well. I'm glad that you mentioned that because I think that's one of the biggest sort of most important things that I wanted to focus on with you today. Which is you know this kind of cultural relationship. That many people especially here in the states. Or maybe I should say in the West in general have with bats how bats have historically for some reason really carried a little bit of a of a fear kind of A relationship which I know that you've worked almost your entire career to try and To try and change will people simply fear most what they understand least in bats are excellent for build affair because they live in unusual places? Come out at night flyer radically and most of us don't see one except maybe if he's chasing insects and that insects may in fact be a mosquito buzzing around our heads in so many times people see a bad coming after that mosquito and think it's attacking run for shelter and because that doesn't get them they think they barely escaped the bat. When in fact the bad just went on to catch a mosquito when in fact in many ways about was actually probably going to be protecting them. Roy -squitoes really are the biggest disease vectors in in the world aren't they? I've investigated countless claims about attacks. Never found one to be valid in fact in mortality working with bats in just about every place for bats can be found often surrounded by millions in caves. I have yet to ever seen aggressive bad. I've never been attacked by one nor have I ever found anybody despite their beliefs in having been attacked. I've never found anyone who is actually who actually been attacked. Yeah and you do an awful lot of work half for your whole career Very close to bats not just studying the them from an ecological perspective but also Photographing them Steve. Up Close and personal with all all different species haven't you? I've photographed more than three hundred species. Close up and In fact I just have never found any reason at all why anybody should be afraid of Bat. Baths will leave us alone. They're perfectly happy to leave us alone. If we just leave them alone the only way to really get at risk of any kind of disease from bad as if he go out and pick one up and it by himself defense We hear all the time about bats supposedly having more viruses than any other animal. Those are very biased reports. And in fact I don't believe them to be true It is true that there are more than fourteen hundred species of bats in the world found practically everywhere. If you've got that many species found in almost everywhere it's inevitable that they're going to have lots of kinds of viruses but Probably no more than other animals if would just be less biased in our search for more than a decade virologist looking for reasons.

"To save them. Oh really I may point out that before. White Nose Syndrome was a problem. I mean I founded the first two endangered species recovery tames for bats in America and we were adamant that nobody would go and disturbance during hibernation more than once every two years even the census for the government to tell how they were doing. In retrospect now I think we should made that every three to five years because every I have have again on my website published resources about the cost of hibernation disturbance when you go into a cave in force about wake up out of hibernation in the wintertime. He Burns up on average thirty to sixty days worth of stored fat reserve. This fungus is killing bats. That's because it makes them you know like if you've ever had chiggers or poison ivy. You don't sleep well at night. You wake up scratching. Well that's what's happened in the baths are waking up out of hibernation origination. It's very costly. And that's why they're coming out before spring they're desperate they're starving and that's why they're dying will imagine then. Once White Nose Syndrome came along there are some places where researchers were going in there half a dozen times or more winter and sometimes spending hours. Oh Wow and they're even more tired would have been enough to knock the population that came out. Without any fungal problem let those snooty little fluky faced. Fuss puppets sleep. People get out of our beautiful vulva noses let them catch some Z's evolutions GonNa play at scores that make sense in. I don't know of any evidence yet that any species is going to go extinct because of this all the ones I know of of the words passed by foreign full go to have an idea seemed to be hanging on not I wouldn't call it thriving hanging on and showing signs now of recovery. So if you're worried about the bats don't don't lose all your sleep over just whiteness. Why not only affecting right now? Listen doesn't species out of forty seven species in the.

There are independent vampire legends. In in many parts of the world from Europe to the Pacific islands there was this whole idea of vampires and drank and blood long before they found about that. Did it seriously in early. The earliest vampire stores were people that were vampires and in fact people did even in Europe. Do really despicable things. Not even two hundred years ago. There were Major Generals and people who after battle would Impale enemies by sticking him. Scientists and friends to animals animals and this and can plug into an iphone or an ipad there between like two hundred three hundred fifty bucks depending on how pro model you get and hey holidays are coming coming up. How about everyone gives each other bad houses? and maybe chips in for tiny ultrasonic microphones and some of Merlin shuttles books just wing in the New Year also. So what if you just want to see some bats now first time question asker and part time. Cairo Corologis in Alaska. Dave Henna asked about bat research instruments and Hope that he gets one of these things. Maybe he already has one. Also patrons including Iris McPherson Lisa butterscotch. Jamie Shamoto all asked about the best way eh to spot one and Nicole Brad asked where can I go to give bats attender little hug provided they want it if you WanNa go bat spotting if you want to see about. What's the best way to if I WANNA see a bad yeah? I'm probably going to do one of several things first of all. I'm a learn a lesson learned right here in front of my House House one night. I WANNA test this out when I bought obtained and I went downtown and went all over places where I thought third bats feeding and I couldn't pick up hardly at Bat. They left town and went out the agricultural areas to be. Oh wow how I came home Paul. Want me to try and see if they're in the yard and I said no no there wouldn't be here and it turns out uh that in our neighborhood is in most neighborhoods. Most of the street lights are yellow now and don't attract insects but the one in front of our places this is white and I got such good recordings right staying in front of our house that the manufacturer asked to use them for promoting the product owner. ooh So just right under your bat knows Merlin says that these are social calls like love. Hey Chit chat a lot. These are just telling him was right in front of him but much more detail. And that's a type of sonar. Yeah with a bat detector. You'd be amazed how many times I can go out in the spotlight. Can't spot a bat that I can hear at least one or two right close in the the first place go looking for a bad. If I didn't have a bet detector would be a white street light or any outdoor powerful white alight because they attract insects. The best like to eat is opposed yellow lights just exposing the morale predation don't attract insects so crashing crashing insect party but do not invite any owls. The other thing I'd do if there was a river or lake anywhere in their boat dogs and their landing lights white lights on the docks I would look around those 'cause a lot easier spot bats out over clear open water line low over the water. That is a pie around street lights. You can find a white streetlight still and that's hard these days. Sometimes you need. She'll will your eyes from the absolute center. The lights done blind. You but then look around and you'll see bats. I used to take take people up to the state capital in the springtime in which there were bat detector and listen there would be anything for a while and then we'd hear several bats bets coming into the zone we'd look up and you'd actually see the wings dropping from the mausoleum. They're eating now the wings just drop like snickers wrappers rappers right like they don't want those they just want the what's inside. I didn't realize that about mocked until I was helping renovate a kitchen up in Montana. Bannon found out that animals don't eat the wings. They just like to eat the Roy's cushy part yeah it's like candy wrappers so in this case it was the mice infestation on our families. Little teeny tiny prairie house and the mice just The Yum yum it up with the Moss but yes they leave the wings around like hike swaps. Nobody wants them so there are there are other ways to see bats to watch your cave entrance. Were they come out at night. I have often even been a foreign country and just look up and see would bicker hole in the tree and wait and watching seebeck come out. He's here if you're in the tropics then mo most places you go anywhere in the tropics. You'll have various kinds of bananas Groin. Banana Plants Bananas Rabat pollinate. We didn't even get into this. Whole part of how important bests are Paul naming economically important? Yeah let's important plans. Yes patrons such as Sophie Casino and Laura Kinney who asked aside from Bats chowing down on insects. Some that's important pollinators right when boats simply demanded what can you tell me about. That's as pollinators. I WanNa know everything quote here we go so if you're staying in a resort resort hotel in the tropics. It won't affect I've done this down along the Gulf of California coast in Mexico Some of the a lot of the resource will have Cardona and organ pipe and Sahara Cactus. Growing right up outside your door in the parking lot and they'll be lights around in in the right season bats common pollinate they're they're mostly bat. pollinated in betsy dispersed. And I've sat in the back. Oh Hotel Room in Mexico. Oh in watched bats four feet away come in pollinating. Flowers and a lot of places will have Bananas Bananas Flower our over very long periods during the year. And you see a a banana that has one of the stocks that hang down that eventually develop bananas on them. PS Merlin was like what what is the word for a stalk of bananas like a stem of them. And I was like got me dude but I'll look it up so I did and let me tell you there were some search returns. That are more than you bargained for. When you type in banana plus an Adamy now? At first glance it seemed like the word we were looking for was just stem or stock of bananas. But then I saw that when it's a bunch of flowers is called an inflow essence which sounds like a new Calvin Klein on perfume also is now a good time to remind you that a banana is of Berry or are we still reeling from that. Pumpkin fact in the Kuker Batali episode we we are anyway bats loving in fluorescence or a big stock of flowers to motorboat efforts. Sun Goes Down or starring starring. Little bit before you'll see one of these purple brax will start opening when it gets open then. The bats come in Paul Nate them now. There aren't any new world bests that originally depended on bananas for pollination because Benitez didn't come from the new world. They came from the old world in dropbox but all commercial bananas that we today come from bet dependent ancestors so anywhere in in the world just about if you go out and you see banana plants growing in a yard. Watch those carefully at dusk or a little bit after after-dusk and you're very likely to see small nectar feeding bats coming in visiting them. So bats are important pollinators for another plant and I'll Gaba may a clue of what that effects took Eela. It's got the plan Tagami. Oh but if it grows a big stock of flowers in the middle that's an inflow essence by Calvin I mean even in Austin. I've laughed at myself before I. I'm curious I've never gone out to a really big fully flower in Garvey plant and often watched it for a couple of hours ars at night. There might be necker best here that we don't know about yet now. Are you a night person. Are you a morning person. I don't think come naturally a night person but certainly had to adapt what happens when you're out doing nocturnal fieldwork. Do you just have like a thermos of folger's what are you. What are you take with you? I have been accused of trying to kill people from starvation dehydration I used to go on. TRIPS indicates my most arduous cave trip took twenty three hours. No and in one day day we probably climbed six or seven hundred feet of vertical ropes. And in on things like that. You gotta carry all these heavy ropes. You're climbing year your research year. You don't want anything else you don't have to so I tend to go really light on food in water and I have myself been so desperate at the end of one of those long stays underground there one night. I actually got down. Drank Water Alva- puddle it had backdrop in live to tell the tale. Oh do I need to remind you to never do this. Okay so bring water or emergency water purification tablets or filters. Listen you spend literally fifty years in the field field. Some Shit's going to go down. But he survived. Just don't you do it please so have you. Have you learned a lesson. Did you never let that happen again. Banner no I don't think anybody knows me would fully learn the less Indiana Jones stuff right there. Oh my guide on one one more thing on on bat watching Another way to see bats. If you're in a Ah out if you go to a Caribbean island to a resort or you're on ways cruise ships in the tropics subtropics of Latin America. You can often see fishing. Bats with up to three almost three foot. Wingspan catching minnows. Under DOC lights catching minnows. Sure bets. What's the big hind feet and laterally? Compressed toes They slide through the water with minimum friction. They have very short claws and they'd just dipped down John. Snag them in or out of the water. It sounds like a pterodactyl or something. Okay side note. I look this up. And it's impressive as hell to use sonar to scoop Bhupathi fish with your feet will.

"In trip might just have to piggyback on that look at that so in mid November Merlin Leading Group through Thailand to see painted that fills my heart with warm rays of Golden Sunshine one thing I find so interesting about bats is that their head shapes vary so so much like that isn't there ahead bat that just looks like a balloon kind of or I love those big male hammerhead beds I never worked so hard my life trying to get a picture combat I caught dozens of hammerhead bats but I never got an Alpha male and now's the Alpha's have bigger head this they have bigger heads while they're older in their more developed I've I definitely have the world most nearly complete collection that photos mazing but I still don't have a fully now that some pretty nice males but not the not the gorgeous one that I want saying you've seen ones that you just haven't been able to photograph the reason I don't have gorgeous one those Alpha males are usually way the highest up in the safest place scoring and they're not coming down to feed where I can get some very much people are catching those are putting s way up in the canopy of the forest back when I was trying to catch mine we didn't I have triple hoy call triple high nets that we could raise up to where they are and so there are unbelievably in photographs like Alpha male hammerhead bats out there will people looking for a Bolan in them voter graph them that's another sore point with me you'd think nowadays that it's been documented clearly that bats are the story Kabbalah and yet that's not true at all after all these years of speculation that came from bats in Spain millions of dollars trying to prove aim from bats still in my opinion the best evidence doesn't go to bats came from well we don't have it any proof yet okay the last time they said they had real good evidence that Ebola might come from bats they found a piece of Oran Aveyron US in a be insectivores bats mouth in a mouth swab they said this was related to Bala you know it was they couldn't it was a genetic fragment that could be but another vira virologist himself pointed out that could just as easily come from the bat eating a mosquito or something that was carrying able making the bad a controller instead of a vector thank God what I point out is that even sick bats rarely become aggressive it is so rare than sixty years of studying bats all of the world hundreds of species I yet to see an aggressive better to document one actually going out and attacking somebody I mean a vampire bat in Latin America yes may sneak up trying to get a nip at night does not what we're talking about the rest of the world are bats simply if I saw a bath looked aggressive I would assume immediately had rabies I wouldn't not not joking about it and I have betrayed or have somebody trade if it seemed to bitten anybody but even touching with bad is not an exposure if you're not bittner exposed to an open wound rabies side note is a virus that can be transmitted from animals to humans and it is potentially fatal if not treated but Merlin says that a fear of rabies is very lucrative so post treatment for rabies which people have been known to get we need leslie in a panic without even being bitten by or touching about just seeing one that treatment will run you forty eight thousand dollars in some can emergency rooms dogs coyotes foxes skunks raccoons can also all carry rabies the bachelor out there taking the heat make one point abundantly clear for anybody who simply doesn't handle bats the odds of contracting any human rabies about sixty thousand years opposed the probably ten year worldwide from bats you know we're Kinda naturally little bit frightened of anything we don't know about we don't know much good questions okay before we get to your questions there were almost three hundred fifty submitted the most for any episode to date but first a word sponsors who make it possible to donate to a cause each week this one was easy the Merlin Tuttle Bat conservation it's an organization that relies on a powerful combination of science field knowledge and photography to help save millions of bats to protect public health economies and worldwide ecosystems by teaching people to live harmony Asli with bats and the founder it's pretty Dang cool guy so a donation went directly to that nonprofit at Merlin Tuttle Dot Org and now you may here somewhere from sponsors who made that possible hey guess what your dad moored I'm a human being which means sometimes face breaks out and America's number one acne brand PROACTIV has helped fight acne for almost twenty five years and now they have a new next generation acne treatment system proactive. "The boom x show continues here's darryl tuttle politics is directly related is the word policy politics and policy the government only has three functions the legislative branch passes laws the executive branch enforces laws the judicial branch adjudicates laws politics when you talk about the government or any political figure you are by the very definition talking about one thing the law if you think you're talking about politics in your commenting about some kind of social thing like we should build a wall because of some social reason that's not politics that's like differences of opinion as between citizens but the word politics means law now i don't know i just feel like sometimes i'm well reasoned sometimes i feel like i'm articulate on i made the mistake of going on facebook posting this articulate what i thought was maybe it wasn't maybe i just don't right well i don't speak well i'm not clear minded about the law maybe that's the problem however i wrote my thing and a complete stranger this is what they wrote in response to my post some guy me jeff i don't even know who this dude is you sure used a lot of words to say absolutely nothing it gets better go bare your head back in the sand i'm like okay so if you were in a coffee shop and you happen to walk by and you're listening to people talk about politics and one of the people you disagreed with which you insert yourself into the conversation and tell them to bury their head in the sand oh my goodness i think there should be a law prohibiting bad manners i like if i was in charge that's the first thing i would do we can speak respectfully to each other about things that really are just neutral i mean we should be able to talk about tax policy without getting personally insulting i just think that good manners are important what the heck does this have to do this is the this is.
