Tulsi Gabbard Named Democratic Nominee After Discovery Of Obscure Rule That Grants Nomination To Whoever Wins 0.7% Of The Vote In Missouri

"Massive news from the Democratic National Convention today. US. Representative. Tulsi Gabbard has been named the party's presidential nominee. Please folks folks. Let me finish. And I quote from the document itself. Sorry. It's a little dusty. It is here to unanimously decreed. That the candidate, whomsoever procures betwixt the margin of six tenths and eight tenths of the vote in The Majesty state of Missouri Beneath the Pale blood moon. In fallow season shall be made our party's nominee for chief executive. It is a dramatic shakeup that caught even the DNC off guard after they discovered the parchment based rule book locked away in a hidden chamber sealed deep below their archives well. It would've been nice to know this back in March. Obviously. We're GONNA need to destroy a lot of Biden twenty twenty merchandise and we had a lot of folks voting during a pandemic for primary that was essentially meaningless. But ultimately, my hands are tied she one zero point seven percent of the Missouri. Vote. What else are we supposed to do while truly unprecedented but what does this mean? For? Democrats in two, thousand, twenty well, it's not good representative or I should say nominee Gabbard has virtually no name recognition and she's pulling in the low single decimal points no one has been able. To get in touch with her either due to her lack of any staff or campaign infrastructure. Frankly, we're not even sure what platform consists of something like ending foreign military bases. I don't really remember now Tulsi Gabbard cheese the senator from Massachusetts. Correct. Now I believe you're thinking of Elizabeth Warren Mistake, it's the one with the crystal the self-help one Marianne Williamson Oh interesting. well, I've got to admit I have no idea who you're talking about then but with that said, she did win the exact sliver of the vote in Missouri that counts in terms of receiving the presidential nomination. That's all that matters right now, what does the Biden campaign saying? This must be a disappointment for them. It certainly is they're searching for a workaround by arguing this decision is superseded by an even. Older precolonial taxed that magnificant democracy him from sixteen, Eighty two. That's the old pamphlet about how to keep Goblins from emerging out of hell and overrunning a functioning democracy. Right? That's right now, those passages suggest only papist like Joe Biden for example, has the power to resist the quote devils. Karnal source laments so far though the Democratic Party has stuck to its guns on this point seven percent of Missouri principle though. Tolsey two, thousand, twenty or bust incredible. It looks that way. Federal judge rules New York must hold June primary canceled over coronavirus risks

"Race Andrew Yang strikes again well there's an old timey name you haven't heard the inter Yang yeah no Yang is a disruptive force in the Democratic Party at least this week he is because remember New York state and its board of elections had canceled their democratic primary for June twenty third and said not we're not gonna have it anymore we've got Joe Biden don't worry about it and for the health and safety of our people are not gonna have this and that was widely seen as something of a coup attempt because Bernie Sanders made it really clear when he quote endorsed Joe Biden but he still wants his own voters to vote for him even though he's out of the race another reason for that is because he wants to crude delegate delegate strength by the time he shows up at the convention whatever form that takes but the democratic convention if he's gotten a lot of delegates behind him he can use that to advance the more socialist elements of the democratic platform that he's interested in seeing and then that's why Bernie was doing that so in New York it was believed that this was an effort to basically say never out we're not going to participate in this game we're just gonna try to get as many delegates as we can over to Joe Biden and Bernie you can go home but what ended up happening yesterday thank Dan thanks Dan regarding a lawsuit he filed he's a federal judge ruled that New York must go forward with its presidential primary the judge U. S. district judge Anil Lisa Torah's of Manhattan made the ruling yesterday evening that they will hold the primary in June and that tore as ruled in favor of Yang and the lawsuit as it was filed by young's office and the young lawyers said this quote this unprecedented and unwarranted move infringes the rights of plaintiffs and all New York state Democratic Party voters of which are estimated to be more than six million as it is fundamentally denies them the right to choose our next candidate for the office of president of the United States the court agreeing there and saying that this that the removing that Alexion merry was unconstitutional interesting that inter Yang we get involved in this the old Yang gang has not broken up they got the gang back together looks like that's right interesting I guess he's a he's a Bernie bro now I guess he's making it known that he is part of the resistance within the Democratic Party with this little move either that or he just likes getting votes you know he's like he still has his name on the ballot again alongside a bunch of other people you realize this you about this June twenty third ballot will include Yang Sanders Warren and Michael Bennett Amy Klobuchar Tulsi Gabbard Michael Bloomberg digest of all Patrick Tom's tire all their names are gonna show up on that ballot in New York in June and that every I released a statement yesterday said quote I'm glad that a federal judge agreed that depriving millions of new Yorkers of the right to vote was wrong I hope the New York board of elections takes from this ruling a new found appreciation of their role in safeguarding our

Elizabeth Warren's Presidential Bid Comes to an End

"Senator Amy Klobuchar former South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Brundige and former New York City mayor. Mike Bloomberg have all called it quits and today. We're adding Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren to that list. I will not be running for president in twenty twenty but I guarantee I will stay in the fight for the hardworking folks across this country have gotten short into the stick over another. That's been the fight of my life and it will continue to be so warrants progressive policy driven campaign caught fire last fall making her an early favorite to win the nomination but she had a disappointing showing in the first elections in the primary season. Including this week Super Tuesday with more on the rise and fall of Warren's candidacy we're joined by Wall Street Journal reporter Tarini Party Tarini. Last fall senator. Warren was one of the front runners for the Democratic nomination but today she became the last remaining woman among the top tier candidates drop out. How expected was this announcement at this point. Given what we saw on Super Tuesday Warren was essentially left with no choice. But to drop out there was all choose facing a lot of pressure because she didn't win a single state she came third in her home state of Massachusetts. And so you know as this race drags out with Joe Biden on one side and Bernie Sanders on the other. The more candidates who stay in the longer the Democratic primary could become. And that's something that party leaders are trying to avoid They WANNA be trump and so they think that the field should sort of consolidate And so they can have a nominee sooner rather than later and she just didn't see a path forward a viable path forward. She did not end. You know ahead of Super Tuesday. Her staff had said that they were looking at a contested convention as one of the ways that were left for her to essentially be the Democratic nominee. They were hoping that she would pick up enough delegates on Super Tuesday to make that case but she didn't get that far and at this point. She said she just saw no path forward. Let's talk about the rise and fall of her candidacy. Tarini people were talking about her back in two thousand sixteen. When Hillary was running right she chose not to run in two thousand sixteen. And this time around you know. She started off with a few missteps She really did get her footing back. She focused her campaign on Ground Game Organization. She built out a huge campaign that focused on raising money online That really Invested in field organizers in in the early states An early on she did start getting a lot of traction. You know if you go back to the late summer early fall. She was starting to become the front runner in this primary. And then that slowly started That's that's slowly. Went away as more questions about her health. Care plan started. Cropping up she eventually put out a Medicare her own version of Medicare for all And you know wasn't really able to sell that both to moderate voters and progressive voters which she said today in her press conference was interesting. She said that when she started out she was told that there were two lanes in the Democratic primary the the Progressive Lane and the The moderate lane and Joe Biden would be the front runner in the moderate Lane and Bernie Sanders was in coming on the Progressive Lane. She was told she said that there was no other path. And she said she Set at the time that she didn't believe that that she thought that she could change things and she said today that that she was wrong It seems based on the way that this primary has played out who among those remaining candidates Former Vice President Biden or Vermont Senator Sanders Might Benefit from Warren's exit. So we'll have to see you know if she decides to endorse. She said today that she's going to take some time to think. And figure things out you know a lot of her supporters. Are you know more progressive? And if you in that sense they could be. You know they could move to Bernie Sanders but she also does have a lot of college educated women who aren't necessarily you know the Bernie Sanders Type of voter so she could. You know some Some of her supporters could also back Joe Biden Tarini. Warren's departure leaves two white men in their seventies competing to run against president trump another white man in his seventies. What are we to make of the fact that this was historically diverse. Field has whittled down to this. It was historically diverse. We had six women. If you know if you're including Tulsi Gabbard and Marianne Williamson. We had six women running Tulsi Gabbard is obviously still in the race but has not gained any traction she elizabeth. Warren was the you know the the last top tier woman still running. She sort of addressed that in her in her press conference one of the hardest parts of this is all those all those little girls. We're going to have to wait four more years. That's going to be hard. What affected Warren. Have on the two thousand presidential campaign and we'll see continue to influence it going forward. I think she will continue to have Influence and be a big voice especially if she decides to endorse either Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden. Going forward how they bring up some of her policy ideas and whether they choose to incorporate those in their own campaign that will be interesting to

Breaking Down Super Tuesday's Results

"Have Texas called in the last five minutes by the Associated Press Four Biden which was a slight surprise. I mean this was something where it was looking like a sanders victory up until a few days ago the polls were deadlocked and what happened is in the last three or four days Bernie Bernie Sanders Lost a lot of states that he was slated to win and Joe Biden consolidated a significant chunk of the Democratic Party. So is this a two-horse race? Yeah I mean I think the question is is it a one horse race There there is a possibility that Biden will create an insurmountable lead Going into next week Because one thing that's also very striking if you look at the results is that Biden performed everywhere except for the places that had high proportions of early voting in other words. Four people voted before south. Carolina's results were known and the narrative was that Biden's candidacy was flailing and Bernie was ascendant. So in in everywhere else Biden really over performed in a big way. The other thing that's very important to note is that Sanders argument throughout this campaign has been that. He brings new voters to the table new voters to the ballot box and that simply hasn't been shown by the data and in fact last night everywhere where turnout was up dramatically and it was up dramatically in some key states biden one big so for the narrative that we need a large coalition to beat. Donald Trump in November. The data is showing. That Biden is doing that and Bernie is not and if you're Bernie supporter. I can understand that it's something that's a difficult pill to swallow but it's what. The empirical evidence is showing through these Super Tuesday results. I mean because sound is slightly scary for some voters because of the socialist labeled but he's not really socialist in the sense that we would understand it. That's right I mean. I think the when you think about this from a UK perspective. There's a lot of Corbin. Comparisons Bernie is not Corbin. He's not nearly as far left as Jeremy. Corbyn but the US is not as far left as Britain. The US is right of Britain. And I think what's also crucial to keep in mind here is that the twenty twenty race is going to be decided by six. Maybe seven swing states. And when you look at which ones those are. You're talking Michigan Pennsylvania Wisconsin Arizona. Florida Georgia those states have very little in common culturally. The one thing they have in common is that they're ideologically moderate and so when you look at places like I'm from Minnesota which trump lost by one and a half percent whether Bernie is socialist or not. That label is highly unpopular in the mid west. It's highly unpopular in places that are ideologically moderate. And so I think that you know Bernie was going to face. Some serious roadblocks to winning in November against trump with some of those label. Some of his comments from the past. That wouldn't have played well in the sort of you know bread and butter mid West Swing State voters who are ultimately centrists so Tuesday was going to belong to Bloomberg if we believed Bloomberg. That clearly isn't the case. Is he still in with a chance? And if he's not might he take those vast funds and place them behind some other candidate? Your answer great question. I think this is one of those things where you know for Democrats who have divided opinions on the candidates. I think the last night in America was a victory for Democracy with a small D. Because it showed that money can't buy elections. He spent a half a billion dollars. Five hundred million dollars and lost everywhere except for I think American Samoa. An overseas territory. So what Bloomberg is likely to do. I mean I've seen reports who knows what will happen by senior ports. He's going to reassess his candidacy tomorrow. if he's smart and his advisors are smart. He'll drop out Wednesday morning. Us Time and throw his billions of dollars behind whoever the Democratic nominee is and I think just to you a scale of how rich Michael Bloomberg is. I did the math on this if I gave you. Five thousand dollars a day every day. Three hundred sixty five days a year. I would have had to start doing that in thirty two. Thousand B C Twenty. Two thousand years before the woolly. Mammoth went extinct for you to have as much money as Michael Bloomberg today so he has a lot of cash and that cash is going to go very likely behind. Joe Biden's candidacy in the coming days and very much the sharp end of the Spear Against Donald Trump going into the general election. So before we get onto what I suspect is really very good news. Just a quick chat about the other candidates Elizabeth Warren and you'll see above who are still in the race. I mean seem not for much longer. Yeah I expect. Warren will probably drop out tomorrow. Tulsi Gabbard Should have dropped out months ago. Chelsea Gabbert has a constituency of exactly one person in that person's name has Tulsi Gabbard But you know Warren Warren I. I've been surprised by. She ran a formidable campaign. She's extremely smart and has done a great job in exciting of voters about her plans. So I would expect that there will be a push to get her endorsements For either Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden. I also think that the the Democratic nominee would be very wise to pledge to bring Elizabeth Warren at at a minimum as a core adviser for the campaign the administration And possibly as vice presidential candidate or a senior adviser in the I also I mean the piece that I'm writing for the Washington Post. This morning is going to call for Biden to come out with a vice presidential pick now and I think the reason for that is because the party is divided between the sanders farther left wing and the Biden more centrist moderate wing and binding could go a really long way if he announced somebody like Elizabeth Warren Kamala Harris Stacey from somebody who fires up the Progressive Wing of the Party And and causes who are a little further left of bite into say you know what he understands us? He accepts that were part of the coalition to win and he's going to be running the candidacy that speaks to us. Not just to the moderates and of course the bottom line is who can beat trump. And you're of the opinion. That could be done. Yeah I mean I think this is something. Where were if you look at the swing states? That matter in November Biden is somewhat tailor-made for those states And there's been this narrative since two thousand sixteen because the political class so to speak was surprised by trump's victory that there's the secret sauce. That trump has that. He'll win no matter what but if you look at the polls. I mean most of the national polls have Biden up by eight points to nine points against trump and keep in mind. That trump was so worried about biden beating him that he able to get impeached over it. Dry trying to trying to damage Biden. And if you look at trump's tweets he is trying to say you know so. Division on behalf of Bernie saying the Democratic Establishment is trying to Rob Bernie Sanders supporters of their victory. Simply because he thinks that the way he wins either with Bernie candidacy over the divided party. Keep in mind that the the Democratic Establishment did not rob Bernie Sanders of the voters. The voters robbed Bernie Sanders the voters in this time because You know he he. Simply he lost the race You know ran I think fairly squarely one thing. That's very interesting to note going forward if Bernie decides to stay in the race. Even if next Tuesday's results are not favorable for him is that in two thousand sixteen when Bernie Sanders was trailing the delegate count. He said that it should matter. Only if you get a majority of delegates not a plurality he was going to fight to the convention and try to say though pick me as the nominee even if I don't have the most delegates this time around when he's had the most delegates when he's been the lead he said the exact opposite he said. If you have a plurality of delegates you should be the nominee will. We're headed for a scenario? After last night in which Joe Biden goes into convention potentially not with a majority but with a plurality and Bernie Sanders is on the records. Now saying that person should be the nominee so he may end up regretting Those words but it is. It is something that sets a precedent by which even if Biden does not get over the fifty percent threshold. That the rules say you have to. You could have his main opponent on camera many many times saying that effectively. If he's got the plurality he should be the nominee. I mean. A gamer of then Biden may yet beat trump. But we're assuming that this will be a fair fight and of course. There's nothing that you can see him about trump. We do not know how how badly he may try and ski this race. Yeah I mean this is why prognostication is a very dangerous game in In Two thousand twenty is that you have a lot of things that trump is going to be willing to do to break the rules. We we've seen that. I mean he was impeached because he tried to use US foreign policy and hundreds of millions of dollars to get a foreign government to investigate a political opponent in two thousand sixteen. Of course he called to jail his uplift his political opponent And and of course there's going to be the wildcards of Russian interference information more at CETERA. But there's also the wild card of the corona virus and how that's going to affect the race which causes some serious uncertainty forecasting months if not weeks into the future and we don't know how that's going to shake out but yes I mean I think if you're looking at places where trump is vulnerable and where he needs to win. Joe Biden is the candidate who is more like voters in those states than Bernie Sanders. I mean is something where you know in Minnesota where I'm from a neighboring Wisconsin. Both States Democrats need to win if they WanNa win and twenty twenty. Those states are not the ones calling for a socialist revolution outside of potentially progressive core in the urban centers. And what Biden did last night. Was He brought suburban voters to the polls and those people are the people who propelled the Democrats to the twenty eighteen victory in the house. So you know it's about building. New Hampshire Primary Election Results 2020

"Let's return now to the results of the New Hampshire primary key win for Bernie Sanders terrible night for Joe Biden. The first one either while while sound is is so far at least winning the race for Democrats supporters can he convert that into the wider political appeal that he would need to defeat. Donald Trump in November. Joining me to discuss that and some of the day's other top stories are Vincent Vinny. UK correspondent for Euronews and political analyst and former BBC political correspondent. Kara okay. I'm carol normally. If you label anybody in American politics anything in American politics a socialist you might as well call them Communists Ernest. It's it's it's completely fatal and you can see candidate sanders going up against trump and socialists. Being about the only thing Donald Trump says for the next six months absolutely Leeann I think socialism socialist does have different connotations in the United States. It's still something where Donald Trump can successfully whip hop certainly a part part of the American electorate against him. I think what's interesting here is that yes last night was a good night for Bernie Saunders. But he was only a fraction ahead of Pete. Booty judge and we've seen Amy Klobuchar also showing very strongly. There's quite a long way to go in this race Bernie Sanders. This is in many ways. The Jeremy Corbyn of American politics. He's got this very powerful loyal. Fan Base significant pecan grassroots support activists who go out there and campaign for him but he's a very divisive figure. He's divisive even within the Democratic Party. And as I think you suggested that there are many even within the Democratic Movement who think that he is just too left-wing to socialist too radical to win over the number of votes the center ground to win votes back from Donald Trump. I mean Vincent. Those I had some voters being interviewed yesterday. Who Democrats who said? Look if it's if it's Bernie. We're not GONNA win. You might as well not even have the election because trump's in trump's GonNa win the election is there that sense and I suppose there is a parallel here to something we'll discuss later in the Labor Party in the UK. The sounders does very well with activists goes very well with committee diehard Democrats who are going to vote Democrat anyway but it's that question of whether he can win over those voters in the middle the ones who voted for a bomb but then voted not for trump as a two things on this. The first is yeah. There's obvious parallel with Jeremy copen hip. There's an obvious parallel with Donald Trump. Someone who wasn't a Republican came in as the fringe is candidate managed to get a strong movement behind him that really supports them then took over the party. And we're seeing the same thing with Bernie Saunders in. He has this movement that he carried forward Ford from the last election. He never ready suspended parts of his campaign the going through the last couple of years and now he is. He's still registered for the next senatorial race as an independent not even as a Democrat. And so he's coming. He's reregistered as Democrats run. He is running away with it. In these first two states and for the other candidates you know De de Joe Biden is basically what Bush was last time round. You Know Jeb. Bush even brought his. You know his brother former two-time president his dad on board the campaign and still couldn't make a breakthrough so we're seeing that same thing with Joe Biden. We'll see whether he he's GonNa Mention Obama even more in the build up to South Carolina but really now he is pretty much out of this this and if the Democrats want to get moderate candidate will clover shirt. You've got Warren. You've got pete. They and Bloomberg is well. Of course it's not forget they now need to pick one one of them and the others need to fall away. Otherwise they're going to be so split that Bernie Sanders is going to run away with this and the second thing to say is there is an ugly side to the Sanders Campaign Ryan as well. We saw it again. Last night. Cynthia Nixon the actress from sex in the city who try to become New Yorker Governor recently and is now a Bernie supporters. She had to shut down a crowd out who booed when Hillary Clinton's name was mentioned. And we're seeing there. Is this kind of vindictive side and Bernie's campaign the Bernie Bros.. Who are turning off mainstream even Democrats so it remains to be seen if Bernie can bring parties together because there are people unhappy with his conduct? The last election in Calvin mentioned some of the sort of people seen seen as the middle ground candidates. The aim Who did very well yesterday? But he's done well in in both the people around him seem to be trying to frame him now now as twenty twenty s version of Obama as the outside of that no one had heard of. Who's going to storm through the race? But I mean is he is he. Is he in Alabama a Buddha Jiji. You're talking about now. We'll look. He has clearly got charisma. He's young Buddy lacks experience I think it's very difficult to see how he could win over those saunders supporters. Just as. It's very difficult indeed to see. How Bernie Ernie Saunders can win over those that larger number of motors? I think what's interesting if you look at what happened last night Saunders was the victor there were about a third of the votes went to Saunders Elizabeth Warren on the more radical wing of the party more than half went to the others who more or less centrist. But as Vincent was pointing out They've got to make up their minds. Because if that memorial memorial vote is split between several different candidates Then there is a strong possibility that saunders come through the middle. I think we do have to watch out for Michael Bloomberg Berg who has fought this rather on docks campaign of skipping housed on all these primaries but his spending he spent since the beginning of the year more than three hundred million dollars on advertising and advertising campaign. That's getting through too much larger numbers than and these political events which perhaps only capture a small amount of the electorate now. He's a bit of an unknown quantity But he we'll certainly feel looking at the fact that there's no other really clear front runner at the moment that he still has to be in there with Jones. Obviously we will learn more. We we get to Super Tuesday at the beginning of March not may well be the death knell for Joe Biden. If he's not able to to to get anywhere but we never parallels British and American politics and in the general election in the UK. Back in December. You bumped into people said the choice I've been given is a hard right conservative government or hard left Labor government Vote is actually. Don't feel they sit in the middle in the end of the vote is did break left him right pretty much consistently if you go through that in America if it sounded Zondo's trump then what happens to those middle ground. American voters is the reason. No third party candidate has ever done anything other than screw up the mathematics the electoral college so presumably they all just going to have to pick a side. Yeah people always you know early on campaign people worried about Tulsi Gabbard splitting the Democrat. Vote but but I think just to go back on one part of your question. A we call Joe Biden now on one thing is that he polls extraordinary high with black voters and has ninety-nine percent name recognition in America. When we get to the next one which is South Carolina very You know African American state. He might surge ahead that it was interesting that he actually. He left New Hampshire last night before the result and he had a rally in South Carolina and then with Super Tuesday much more diverse state. So he could pull stuff back Because because you know Pete Bootleg does very poorly with black voters. Amy Club shells also good issues as a time as a lawyer in in terms of criminal issues that she prosecuted And so do you know. It's not absolutely so not yet but yeah it is for a lot of people. You Know Bernie. Democrats will have the same problem that Republicans had with trump. Is it. Do you just hold your nose and vote for him can burn. He put through a message of we have to get trump out which is what Joe Biden has been trying to do. You might not think I've got all these you know snazzy new policies but I'm just the take back the soul of America get trump out and what what the camp has to do behind Bernie is to really say say you know you have to hold your nose and vote for him just to get trump out but his policies and particularly an attack. I heard last night. The hadn't heard before with Bernie is you know. He took his honeymoon in the. US are before the Iron Curtain fell now in America that is going to play so bad and I think we're going to hear a lot more about that in the next couple couple of weeks

"Journeys of faith were back and welcome to season three. I'm your host qualifier as we know in this election cycle you're going to be inundated with political news but we're doing something something different. We're going to be speaking with twenty twenty candidates and other political figures about their personal faith. And how it influences person and policy you can call God odd by many different names but we are worshiping the same God and loving the same God. She became the first Hindu member of Congress and is looking to become the first Hindu president president of the United States. Our next guest is Tulsi Gabbard the Democrat congresswoman from Hawaii is a major in the. US Army She's been deployed twice to the Middle East. Gabbard is seen by some as an iconoclast within the Democratic Party. She recently had a much publicized. Beef with Hillary Clinton and she doesn't toe the Party line on this episode. Why she thinks Democratic leaders are headed in the wrong direction? We also discussed how her faith informs her policies from gun control to abortion and.

"Her and then when the opportunities presented to not to take it. Can you talk about how Tulsi Gabbard campaign is running a little bit differently than other people in the race. Yes so it's very small and it's a lot of members of her family are very involved. Her husband is the videography geography for her sister is really running the operation. Many of the people employed by the campaign have ties to her religion. A local Hawaiian in paper didn't investigation. Where they went to the how they tracked down? The House of one of her top paid consultants and he was living in Alaska. And sort of this remote. Oh place and wouldn't come to the door and it was sort of unusual for political consultant. So it's a very small operation really run by people who are very very loyal to a congresswoman Gabbard and a lot and a fair number of those people. It's also a bit of a family operation. I can see how that's comfortable but I could also see how that means your worldview W. stays rather compact. Yeah I I mean I have heard from people inside the campaign that there are questions about whether she's hearing criticism awesome and whether there are folks there to tell her. Perhaps this isn't working or that isn't working in that. You Know is a perpetual problem in presidential campaigns that nobody really wants to tell their boss the boss. They're doing something wrong. But that is the difference between candidates who take off and candidates who end up. Making mistakes is is the ability me too correct for and understand those missteps now. Gabbard candidacy is at this turning point with polls consistently putting her campaign in the single digits. She seems to be lashing out even harder at her own party last month. She threatened not to show up at the Democratic presidential debate. Seeing the system had been rigged a few weeks later she called out. Hillary Clinton saying she was the queen of warmongers. Although you could argue that Hillary Clinton Lynton started that fight. Can you tell the story of exactly what she said. Because I think there was actually some confusion about that at first okay so Hillary Clinton has been Out in public a little bit lately because she's promoting a new book that she wrote with her daughter Chelsea and is part of that push. She was interviewed by David. PLOUFFE who of course was Barack Obama's campaign hayne manager in two thousand eight On a On a podcast and at one. Point Puffins Hillary. Clinton start discussing possible strategies that trump and the republicans skins would use In the election. And she says you know that first Republicans will demonize the Democratic candidate and then she said Republicans lukens and this is where things got a controversial Republicans would encourage a third party candidate so that voters disenchanted with the president. You know on the Democrats could have another option. I'm not making any predictions. But I think they've got their eye and somebody WHO's currently in the Democratic primary and our grooming her to beat the a third party candidate she's a favorite of the Russians. They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting our so far and Dan herself later said that she was referring to Tulsi Gabbard ner comments so basically what Hillary Clinton was arguing although she was not using zing Tulsi Gabbard name. was that the Russian Russian propaganda machine the kind of Internet trolls and operators that were meddling around in the two thousand sixteen election would come out and back Tulsi Gabbard and really. She was saying they already are out. And backing Tulsi Gabbard hurt and that could cost a Democrats vote In the same kind of way that impacted her race is there any truth to that that the boats are out there. You know pushing Tulsi Tulsi Gabbard message. So honestly it's really hard to know because the platforms have gotten much better at sort of taking out the most obvious botts by operations rations. So it's hard to know whether that's happening We do know there has been some analysis of Russian state television outlets like rt or sputnik and they do tend to cover Tulsi Gabbard more than they would. They cover other candidates at her level. You know the two four percent level in the race but does that mean. They're backing her. I Dunno it's hard to know but I think what's interesting in this is that Tulsi Gabbard jumped on Hillary Clinton's claims James and in fact. She was the one who said that Hillary Clinton claimed that she was being quote her words groomed by the Russian government to undermine America so Tulsi League average campaign saw this really useful talking point for them not only because it her attention widespread media attention but also helped her make the argument that it wasn't that her message didn't have appeal with voters. It was that she was somehow being hurt by the the Democratic Party forces. Let me tell you what this is about. This is about Hillary Clinton sending a very strong message saying that because I am and have long been calling for an end to our country's foreign policy of aging one regime change war after the next the likes of which we've seen in Iraq in Libya and ongoing in Syria. And because because I'm calling for an end to this new cold war nuclear arms race that I am a Russian asset that I am a traitor to the nation that I love and not only so extremely extremely online that any attention is good attention. Just keep stoking it. Yeah and look some people who have had interactions with the campaign say that it is part of their philosophy that all attention is good attention. And that's how they view it so whether that attention comes from Tulsi Gabbard or comes from Hillary Clinton attacking her. That's that's great and look there plenty of people in the Democratic Party who are really Do not like Hillary Clinton so this gave her an opportunity to really take some punches at this. He's very well known very famous. Still controversial figure in the party at the end of October Gabbard announced she would not be running for re election to Congress in twenty twenty money choosing instead to focus all of her attention on this long shot presidential bid this decision it just intensified all the questions about what Gabbard up to and whether she might stay in the presidential race even if she loses her party's nomination whenever she's been asked you said absolutely not. She's not running as a third third party candidate. But that has not done anything to tamper the speculation and I think you know all this is also wrapped up into this intense sort of Ptsd Democrats mccray have from the last election. Democratic Party strategist establishment types politicians and voters are so traumatized really it by their loss In sixteen that they see everything I think through that Lens. And there's this deep rooted fear that someone will emerge Jill Stein. Ah like figure in a tight race will cost them the election and I think when Democrats look on that stage they see Tulsi Gabbard as the candidate most likely to fill that role even though she has said again and again that she has no plans to do that. What do you think she's thinking about next steps could be in the event? She's she's not the presidential nominee. She hasn't said anything but generally politicians don't say when I become President I'm going to do x Y and Z right. Everybody is going to be he president until they're not But of course in reality that's not what people are doing their behind the scenes sort of plotting out their next moves and I have no idea whether Tulsi Gabbard is doing. Ah She hasn't said at all what she might do. Should she fail to win the nomination. which is what it looks like now? At least and so unless something in the contest changes radically. But there's there's certainly a lot of speculation. I've heard all kinds of theories. One of course is that should President trump win reelection that she would go into the trump administration and that's towns. Perhaps at its face really confusing because She's a course running for the Democratic Party nomination But what people who sort of speculate on Mat Su they point out that she met. She was one of really very very few if any Democrats who met with President trump when he was president elect that and her sort of support. From folks and trump's circle has led some Democrats to speculate whether she would go into the administration. Should he win a second term I'm curious what you think. Tulsi candidacy says about politics right now about about what she's saying about how the political world works. Well I think it's a couple of things I think we're in a period where parties are on the decline where the two mainstream parties don't all have the same level of control That they had anymore and they're sort of an ironic twist this is. I think Tulsi Gabbard is sort of creating doing this narrative of this rig system of the smoke filled room when reality her very existence her very presence on that stage shows that there is no more smoke filled room. That's gone that really Anyone who can get attention on line and build up a little money from viral moment can run for president and possibly have a place on that stage and we see that in both parties. Of course you know you look at Donald Trump and you see that same phenomenon. He certainly was not the pick of the Republican Party establishment. That much is pretty clear so I think her presence on the stage even as she spends all this time attacking the establishment it really shows how very weak parties and party establishments are in America. Right now Lisa Lehrer. Thank you so much for joining me. Thanks thanks for having me. Lisa Lehrer is a political reporter at the New York Times. She writes the newsletter on politics. And that's the show what what next is produced by Mary. Wilson Jason Leone Daniel Hewitt and Mara Silvers. One more thing to tell you about before I get off the air here. If you live in New York a bunch of the smart women at slate are going to be doing a live show and a debate watch party hoof. I'm exhausted just thinking about it but I would love to see you there. We're going to be talking a bit. Then we're going to watch the democratic debate or even considering Bingo cards there's definitely going.

What next Tulsi Gabbard got a lot of attention? When she first came to Washington back in two thousand thirteen choose the first Hindu in Congress one of the youngest people elected? She was also proudly Hawaiian Ryan. She talked about bringing the Aloha spirit to politics. Still does in the beginning. This is all pretty alluring Democrats so as soon as is gathered got to Capitol Hill. She was tapped for a plum position vice chair of the Democratic National Committee. She was sort of this outspoken at progressive. She was veteran. She was a young woman. She was a surfer. People like Nancy. Pelosi said she'd be a big star. I think retail Matto so if I remember correctly he had praised her. You get to be the vice chair of the National Democratic Party because your party thinks you're going places so she was seen as this progressive veteran Karen who was very telegenic and had this great background in Hawaii and with someone that the party could sort of put forward as their their new face. Ace but then she did something that pissed a lot of people off. When Hillary Clinton was running for president well she backed Bernie Sanders bid over Hillary Clinton I and so that really isolated her from the mainstream party center? I mean you have to remember it. During that campaign a sanders was really seen as someone on the fringe. Maybe a socialist sometimes the Democrat who is challenging. Hillary Clinton who the party had really kind of anointed kid as the next nominee So when congresswoman Gabbard left her position at the DNC which she had been given because she was this rising star to go and support Bernie Sanders. That was something that really annoyed. A lot of people in the Democratic Party establishment right. And it wasn't just that it was. She was calling for more debates. Beats because that would have been advantageous to Bernie Sanders right and the concern that you know. The democratic establishments have people people had and Allies Hillary Clinton was that Hillary Clinton would get beat up in these debates those attacks by Bernie Sanders while he was unlikely to capture the nomination was sort of the mainstream thinking in Washington she would be damaged heading into general because of how he would frame her. I mean I think the endorsement of Bernie Sanders it kind of got people interested in the idea of hold it. Who who is this woman? How did she get here and a lot of people all started talking about how she was raised in this pretty unconventional way where she didn't go to traditional school? She was raised Hindu. But it was in this kind of breakoff movement From the Hari. Krishna's Krishna's can you. Can you describe a little bit how she actually became interested in politics in the first place. Well actually she's from a political family. Her mother was on the Hawaii State Board of Education. Her father was Honolulu Council member. He was a political activist. And that's come back to haunt her a little bit. Her Father Mike captured was one of the state's leading opponents of LGBTQ rights and he found an organization that was opposed to marriage equality and really tolerance for homosexuality quality. So that's something that those positions that she has had to renounce during the first days of her presidential campaign so she's from she's from the political background around. You know it's just a political background local politics in Hawaii but Gabbard politics could be unpredictable even before she endorsed Bernie Sanders. Her colleagues noticed. She didn't want to carry water for the party. Especially when it came to foreign policy she walked this line as a member of the army reserve. She'd vote to to support the military but other things. She's kind of a wild card so she also picked a few fights with the Obama Administration. That Democrats really didn't like if you remember the whole fight over where Republicans demanded that President Obama used the term radical Islam. She was really the only Democrat to join in that Republican call and went on Fox News and made a big deal of the fact that the president would not use the term radical Islam. She dubbed Herself Hawk on on terrorism. Those were foreign policy positions that were really out of the mainstream of democratic thinking and in some cases anathema to what Democrats are trying to do so she was already kind of getting attention from folks saying This isn't typically what we would expect from our junior congresswoman right. I think our focus on sort of the terrorism terrorism threat led to her sort of quasi support for Bashir al-Assad. I mean I think she would not consider herself a supporter of Assad. But she's been very reluctant reluctant to criticize him. Would you say he is to the United States if you cannot say that. He's an adversary or an enemy. What is Assad to the the? US What is the word you can describe it however you want to describe it how you just my point. Is that whether it is Syria. or any of these other countries as we need to look at how their interests are counter to or aligned with ours and she's argued that really the best way to defeat Isis in Syria was for the US to align itself with Assad. And that of course means that really. You're aligning yourself with Russia and Putin and so as things developed over the past few years and and certainly with Russia's intervention in the election last time around that's led to a lot of questions about her the thing I have trouble with when I look at Tulsi Gabbard sort of record and and what she says about. The issues is finding an overarching philosophy. Because I think it's interesting that she talks about the military in a different way in a lot of other politicians do having served in the military. But I can't quite tell what the bigger messages about where we should involve ourselves solves and how we should behave abroad right. I think you're you're hitting at the central the central facet that people find confusing about Tulsi. Gabbard is that there's no. There seems to be no intellectual consistency in terms of her message. No foreign intervention then. She's she's reluctant to say sort of negative things about Assad or mody Or even Putin she's you know it's it's just it's confusing. I WanNa talk a little bit about the various people who have come out supporting Tulsi Gabbard because it is this really diverse like almost strange constituency where you know she was obviously closely aligned with Bernie Sanders. She came on early to support him. But then also you have people like Steve Bannon coming forward. You have people like David Duke. You have a lot of fans on four Chan. Have you been in those fourteen discussions. Can you characterize them a little bit. Well they call her mommy. That's that's her nickname. And those four Chan message boards. Look I think they People on four Chan like these kind of candidates who stirred up who take on the establishment who are fighting sort of mainstream figures and she definitely has positioned herself in that space. She is someone who has positioned herself as an opponent of the establishment. Even as she she runs for one of the major parties nomination I mean I think Tolsey herself would say she wants to talk to all Americans. That's why you see her on Fox News more than INSA- Elizabeth Warren and I wonder what you think about that as a political reporter. Well I think that's fine and it's certainly a fair argument to talk to all L. A.. Barricades but I think I you have to win. Democratic primary rate and so you don't win Democratic primary by going on Fox News that's not where your voters are. She has a very a strong fan. Base is not necessarily very large based on her polling numbers both national and state polls but it's very active and it's very active online and it feels very strongly about Tulsi Gabbard. An ice tea from people have reached out to me. You know an emails or whatever sometimes these people are independents or Republicans. They're not sort you've always. Some of them are traditional. Democrats are not always you know. She has attracted people with a wide variety of views and they feel very strongly about her and they also really feel that The mainstream media's out together I mean you asked Gabor's campaign about her support from sort of fringe peer groups and they declined to respond to that strike. You as odd. You know what I did find that a little bit odd because they spend. There's a lot of time complaining about how she's not being uncovered by the media and how the media even the New York Times and CNN is she called us out at The debate we sponsored is out to get her but I gave them multiple opportunities for two knees to comment. I asked for an interview to sit down with her And those were all turned down so I I did find that. A bit confusing The complaints that the media is not covering.

"To battle tirelessly against the right of random strangers to me he became one of the faces of anti gay marriage activism in Hawaii and tried to build a coalition of Catholics Protestants Coltie Weirdos Mormons to stop the March of Progress Tolsey ah political actions were following her dad around and knocking on doors with him she helped in his successful campaign to be elected to the Honolulu City Council and his campaign for the State Senate both of which were successful in office. Mike Gabbard pursued a dizzying mishmash of right wing social policy and left-wing environmental regular regulation in Nineteen Ninety nine after a character on Dawson's creek came out as gay might flew to North Carolina to lead a protest on the set of the show he's dude yeah this show up to then up to the heartbroken about in two thousand toll smothered Carol won a place on the state board of education Asian it might be fair to say that Chris Butler saw the Gabbard family is the most successful wing of his plan to gain political influence for his colt now as she grew into a young it might encourage his daughter to turn her love the ocean into a political career perhaps what we all love the ocean trouble and turning it into career I'm fine with that part if if all she cared about was the ocean I wouldn't have an issue with Tulsi Gabbard actually it was a couple of ocean candidates just that tints made me very funny sentence but yeah I love the ocean you should do politics about it I'm sure there's some problems relating to politics in the ocean yeah somebody somebody could stand to do more about that some more allegations about the ocean yeah fuck it look into it now tolsey ran for her first public office at age eighty one and this is one of the few parts of her backstory that she will go into detail about to reporters she claims that running for office was one of the major turning points in her life as an anxious introvert it'd child quote from Tolsey there was a turning point when I first ran for Congress where a realization that this anxiety was coming from a selfish place in thinking about you know my own fears and how people are going to re respond to me I don't want to bother people that felt like it was coming from an inward-looking place a selfish place rather than my seeing them as beautiful opportunities to share my Aloha once I really is that that changed everything completely okay cool okay overcome your obstacles to overcome absolutely absolutely in two thousand to tolsey became the youngest person ever elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives like her father she supported a wide variety of environmental issues and social list issues but like her father she was also a socially conservative nationalist nationalism mixed in with her social in two thousand three she voted against a bill that would have required hospitals to provide emergency contraception immediately to rape victims her reasoning was that the bill did not include a conscience clause to allow religious doctors to opt out of providing care in the wake of nine eleven she also supported widespread government surveillance stating in one speech that the demand for unfettered civil liberties would make America a safe Yeah I hate civil liberties personally dot com I didn't but now I do thank you for growing yeah in in two thousand and four Honolulu magazine emailed Tulsi father to ask about his ties to that Weird Hindu Kush cope thing toast stuff from before Tolsey played on his behalf and accused the magazine as acting as a conduit for the Honolulu weekly and other homosexual extremists supporters of Ed case there's opponent later that year she testified against civil unions for gay people saying it was dishonest cowardly in extremely disrespectful to the people of Hawaii to claim that they see that civil unions were different from same sex marriage which is like Kinda right for the wrong reasons like it was a back door way of making gay marriage legal but having a problem with that is Kinda dumb unless you're argument is that no we should just push for full doesn't forest very recent yes long ago that said she was against gay marriage at the same time Barack Obama was so I mean yeah she's against gay marriage around that same time most politics instill were yeah so it's one of those things there's a the extent to which you do have to remember where things were at the time but also remember all the other things have been radio show stuff you know a lot of things they've come from very very homophobic and vocally so family I guess my point be fair so totally finished one term as a state representative and then shocked everybody by joining the Army National Guard volunteering for duty in Iraq she's been twelve months there as a medical specialist at a logistical support base called Anaconda now that basic chief the nickname mortar Rita Ville due to frequent insurgent mortar attacks and also the mortar Rita's which were delicious yeah that's spreadsheet of casualties these were American troops for whom she was supposed to organize treatment that daily task it left an indelible impression on me she says understanding behind every one of these names soldiers sailors seeing the volume of people paying the price for war it caused me to think about those who made a decision to start this war I wondered if they ever thought about these people their families I like it well yeah I think one of the things about her that draws people to her that sort of outspoken anti imperialist anti regime change from where it's just like understanding the cost of war and not thinking it's a cost that's worth it Yeah now that's fair in its it's definitely good to have people in politics who were in wars this country three waged and understand the human cost like darnall raw raw about it that said it's worth noting that whenever she talks about the human cost of war she talked specifically about its cost the American soldiers and American families in that is very much your focus and that will become much more relevant in a little bit so that's my l. accounts yeah a little bit by every account Everett Gabbard was a very good soldier she deployed a second time to the Middle East to Kuwait this time as a military police officer she left the army as a major once she was clear of the military her political career took off in earnest she was elected to the Honolulu City Council in two thousand eleven and introduced a measure to reduce parking restrictions for food truck vendors her other major legislative achievement was bill fifty four which allowed city employees to confiscate private possessions left on Public Property as long as they gave twenty four hours notice that's an odd bill yeah okay the ACLU protested bill fifty four but Tulsi succeeded in getting it passed I know today interestingly enough her campaign website frames the bill is part of her commitment to combating homelessness saying it was concerned with the cleanliness publics safety and accessibility of public sidewalks elderly children and the Disabled Okay so calm batting homelessness in the fact that we don't want to see that problem around with Dan Society so let's cleared away so that no one sees it cool I I should also add that at the time Gabon's political opponents opposed bill fifty four because they suspected it was introduced to allow cops in Honolulu to shutdown that cities occupy I protest in confiscate tents and other property from activists now interestingly enough Gabbard brags today that the bill quote provided a twenty four hour otas before confiscating property stored in the public right of way which kind of makes it sound like the purpose of the bill was to mandate that homeless people had to be worn before their property was confiscated which is a clever ways reframe the fact that she pushed a bill that allowed the police to take homeless peoples property in the first place right saying that introducing a bad idea but then saying at least there there's a warning at least we told them yeah yeah and it makes it seem like the bill was to mandate the warning as opposed to the running just being part of her leading the cops take their shit cool yes like introducing a bench that has spikes popout unless you give him money yeah but then being like but like we give receipts for the bench we are allowing homeless people to pay should not be impaled exactly exactly May of two thousand eleven I love governments in May of two thousand eleven Tulsi Gabbard announced her candidacy for the incumbent democratic seat on the House of Representatives forty second district despite being seen as the underdog Gabbard won with fifty five percent the vote she immediately set to work pushing progressive legislation in two thousand twelve she supported the restoration of the glass steagle act she fought against cuts to Medicare or security she attacked Obamacare for not going far enough and has consistently been an advocate for universal healthcare she is anti nuclear energy which I personally think is Tom Is very consistent with most liberal voters in this country to her credit by the time she took National Office Tolsey had moved further left on a number of important issue who's she now pushed to stop the NSA's collection of data a significant reversal of earlier policies on surveillance she also came around on gay marriage now toast. he claimed that this was actually due to her experiences in Kuwait and she wrote this on a blog in two thousand eleven the contrast between our society and those in the Middle East made me realize What's the difference the reason those societies are so oppressive is that they are essentially theocracies with government and government leaders wield the power to both define and enforce morality I began to realize the positions I had previously I had held previously regarding the issues of choice in gay marriage were rooted in the same premise held by those power in the oppressive Middle East regimes I saw now okay it's good that she came around on that issue that's one thing I l- I like when politicians are actually honest about their terms Shin yes I mean I used to think this and it was bad and now I think this oh no turned around on what she thought should be allowed not what she tharcisse marriage thing and she turned around on wet she knows is expected of her versus what you personally believe is right versus wrong yeah now she also turnaround abortion rights and received an endorsement from Emily's list during her two thousand twelve run I do WanNa State ad and taken on the surface? This is all laudable I think a lot of leniency when they grow up with parents who are crazy extremists I have a lottery respect for people who can make us change but as I kind of hinted at instated pretty directly Tolsey didn't actually change her mind at that point at the morality of gay marriage just about whether or not the government should legislate it she still thought it was wrong she just didn't think it should be illegal anymore that's obviously better than the using gay marriage I don't think it's great but it's better and there's some evidence that she's moved on since although a lot of LG groups don't really think she's had a mental range about it I don't know personally she's she says the right things now yeah now toll selection as the first Hindu American congressman I'm an youngest con T- Tolsey was elected as the first Hindu American congresswoman and the youngest congresswoman in history she was thirty one at the time her status is a veteran and the fact that she was you know pretty hot made her an instant darling of left wing politics and I I don't bring that up to be a what's the word Yeah I bring it up up constantly in writing about her everyone who write profiles about her have to talk about it After her election Suzanne Malveaux Oh told this on CNN I can't tell you how many people have mentioned your name and said this is one to look out for tell us why I mean people see you as a rising star that exact terminology risings Dr was used by the Washington Post and the ABC to she was the recipient of a vogue profile which described her as having a fit physique and a smile so warm it's no surprise website let's have offered polls rating her hotness I hate it yeah now the DNC chose her to be its vice-chairman Nancy hello see esther to speak at President Obama's reelection convention in two thousand twelve and for a while it looked many people like Tulsi Gabbard was the bright shining and shall we say fit future of the Democratic Party yeah because I heard smile now that seems seems great at this point and she.

"Hello and welcome to series only two hundred and fourteen I'm Thomas Jamie how are you doing Jamie I'm Dan Pretty Good Thomas how're you I am doing ah well but I just tapped my notes for this or just entitled Tulsi Gabbard Wti F- 'cause I don't I'm just confused Yeah I guess so I'm I'm currently I've done a an immense amount of reading and research and I'm I don't know if I'm less confused than when I started about Chelsea how about you yeah interestingly my notes are also titled Wt I just this whole this whole thing is so bonkers to me it really is I I said to you earlier in the week or I don't remember when it come up came up that I just I would love because I'm so confused about Tulsi to begin with and this news opted over the Hillary Clinton interview on David Plus podcast and it was just like a good time to be like let's just do a deep dive I figured okay I'll finally get to the bottom of this we all know what's going on what makes her do certain things and it's very confusing there's a there's a lot of weird stuff about Chelsea and did you and I may totally disagree on this but like I'm actually kind of confused as to whether or not maybe she is somewhat I'll be very careful we'll she seems to be sympathetic to Russia in ways that are weird in and I don't know what to make of it but we'll go into it I thought so here's what I wanted to say first off I just wonder show of hands everybody listening I want to know how many people who have like from this controversy and commented on I just WanNa know how many people actually listen to what Hillary Clinton said because I feel like if there's one thing we should all be sure of like even people who hate Hillary people who like Hillary like me I still pretty much like although I have criticisms of her like I do many people but anyway one thing is for sure it's very see for people and it's she has a history of people skewing her words because in my opinion I think that the initial headlines were off they said that she claimed that Russia was grooming Tulsi for a third party run when I went and listened to it it's very clear that she's responding to bluffs question about Republican strategy and when she says they are grooming her she's she's referring to Republicans now she also says that Tulsi is favored. Russia so that's absolutely true but it it's a slight difference I want to just play it I think we should play it's everybody's on the same page we're not you know quibbling about it I think might take a couple of minutes you actually capable of like can you actually just trying to staff at that speed one yet this is going to blow your mind ah I love this because you're not a podcast person so you probably don't even know that people listen to us on like one point eight speed probably or maybe two to xp did you know that I did I don't I don't know how do okay maybe I'll leave this all engines for fun okay now hit play when the speed is adjusted to one x time no and trump had those advantages but he was not an incumbent so as we know whether it's Ronald Reagan husband Barack Obama those first eighteen months election cycle where as important as the last six months give us pause so one it's connected to the discussion we just had an actually about social media earlier in our discussion Donald Trump has you know better than the world only got forty six point one percent nationally you know he got forty seven point two in Wisconsin forty seven Michigan if you had said those before the election you would have said he's lose landslide but one of the reasons he was able to win is the third party vote and what's clear to me you mentioned you know he's going to just lie I mean you forgot what because he's GonNa say whoever our nominee will ban hamburgers and steaks lie and infanticide and people believe there so how concerned you about that I for me so much this does under the win number if he has to get forty nine even forty nine point five and I think he can so he's going to try and drive a people not to vote for him but just to say you know you can hold for them either I mean that seems to be I think to the extent that I can design a strategy their key strategy right now well I think there's going to be two parts and I think it's going to be the same as two thousand sixteen don't vote for the other guy you don't like me don't vote for the other guy because the other guy's going to do x Y and Z or the other guy did such terrible things I'm going to show you in these you know flashing videos appear and then disappear and they're on the dark web and nobody can find them but you're going to see them and you're going to see that person doing these horrible things they're also going to do third party and I'm not making any predictions but I think they've got their eye on somebody who's currently in the Democratic primary and our grooming her to be the third party candidate she's the favorite of the Russians they have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting our so far and that's assuming Jill Stein we'll give it up which she might not because she's also a Russian read answer Russia asset totally and so they know the can't win without a third party candidate and so I don't know who it's going to be but I will guarantee they'll have a vigorous third party challenge in the key the states that they most need it okay so that's the thing in its entirety all right I have so much but I I don't know if you WanNa give your initial thoughts on there's a couple of things that I object to yes they're you know they're clearly talking about what the Republican strategy is but there's an element of red baiting in this that just strikes me as really disingenuous you could say a lot of legitimate criticisms about Jill Stein but describe her as a Russian asset fundamentally missed construes Russia's particular brand of propaganda and I really the am uncomfortable with the way that third party voters are used as this sort of boogey man that they're you know undermining the democratic process not a legitimate part of it in a healthy functioning democracy because it sort of takes for granted attack in the absence of a third party that those voters would have gone to Clinton and that's just false they could just as easily gone to trump or democracy like ours where forty percent of the population should sits out a presidential election they could have just not voted at all and so when we sort of Smith two thousand sixteen simply being the result of third party candidates and particularly third party candidates that are Russian assets it seems to me to be this sort of cognitive dissonance that's motivated to not have to meaning fleet take stock at maybe part of the reason two thousand sixteen so unsuccessful is that the Hillary Clinton campaign never even stepped foot in Michigan and that seems to me to be important okay I disagree with a lot of that I don't know that it'll be a good use of our time to re-litigate Twenty sixteen because I want to talk about tells Gabbard but I think that think your view there's there's a lot I agree and I think it's very valid I think it's right to say that it's it's no guarantee that third party candidates you know would would vote for Hillary otherwise you're right on I think that's a good criticism I also think that in my opinion as much as I I really do see where Hillary's coming in from here because Jill Stein is if we're talking if we're doing a Tulsi Gabbard WTO episode we could very easily do Jill Stein WPF episode because there was a lot of weird this that we covered on opening arguments in terms of the Russians and Jill Stein Jill Stein was a very much a part of the Russian effort to undermine the election in the bought networks and in the ads they bought she was part of it and they specifically tried to appeal to black voters with ads saying Hey Jill Stein as a good it's a good message vote and all this stuff so that's where she's coming from but I agree that Hillary went too far I think she I would what I the main thing I would like to here a from Hillary and I get that nobody is like me and they care about actually really enjoyed listening to this podcast episode because I think she has a lot of knowledge I think she's right about a lot of stuff she talked about trump dismantling the state department and she can she has a lot of insight into things that I personally I think is good but I get that nobody is tails would prefer for it to go away forever but what I would have liked clarification on his when she says someone is a Russian asset does she just mean gene that their presence is an asset to Russia which I think is can be true of people regard just as just in the same way that that that so many weird right wing people who I wanted to get to have have endorsed Tulsi like it's it's it's you could say that Tulsi Gabbard is a favourite of Richard Spencer she's a favorite of Mike Stern of it it doesn't I but but I get that it's per apps a little too insulting to say that without clarifying whether or not the relationship goes the other way so I would like to know whether Hilary actually thinks that the relationship is a two-way relationships or when she says someone is rushing asset does she mean the fact that somebody is undermining confidence in the DNC which Tolsey is or is running on third party campaigning Against Hillary as a Jill Stein did all that stuff whether that's merely an asset to Russia because of their efforts to get trump elected right and so I think aww that is correct and I wanna get to Tolsey as well so I don't WanNa take up too much time on this I think there's nuance in here that's really important and that I've you know I had to wage you're one of my limbs I would put in on Hillary Clinton accurately having an understanding of that I think she uses this in a way that that is most charitably lazy and less charitably disingenuous because while Hillary Clin I and you and I may have a sense that there's more nuance to what it means to be a Russian asset she certainly using this in a way that's sort of euphemistic and almost Dogwood Saly and trying to suggest or imply something more nefarious to more casual consumers of news on that I think is warranted Maybe but I also okay I also think she might may be right maybe the other we should get into Tulsi Gabbard because I wasn't really expecting to see as much Russia weirdness is I found when I dug into this and again I I don't know I genuinely don't know the explanation I also want to say that one thing that bugs me a bit and I did read the Matt Taibbi article I can't stand him mainstream which has been pushing the same line for years so there's people like Taybe who they they love to say that the whole Russia thing is an effort to like make an excuse for two thousand sixteen and I ju- like maybe that's true for some people but I you know I've read Hilary's book it's not like it's it's for it to talk about the Russian efforts and the fact that trump has been disagreeing with the intelligence consensus on this and all that but if anything if Hillary's excuse for losing you know it shouldn't be Russia it's not really Russia it's probably more Komi and she kind of has a point because Komi did some really messed up stuff and in probably swung the election but it's not as though she or most Democrats are any Democrats that I know are in denial that regardless of all all the other stuff regardless of Russia regardless of whatever the shenanigans with voter suppression there's still a large number of people who voted for trump men of her position and that kind of bugs me the other way yes so I'm I'm not sure that I agree with that because when we talk about Russia meddling they didn't alter the election they didn't you know put in place some sort of Manchurian candidate what they did was sow discord bought ads and you know they interfered with our elections in the sense that they influenced what came up in news they influenced what people were reading about other people and so like that's real criticism to that is it's.

"The Kremlin and non-state actors including the trans-national crime syndicate and its various appendages that's Kinda getting buried now this petty primary bullshit yeah and just mayor Pete and Bago totally botching their response to this whole Tulsi Gabbard useful Kremlin idiot thing just shows their first instinct was to be confirmed tolsey movement and Mayor P in bed just loved it completely and so that really shows you that they're conformists because they just buckled to the pressure and they also seized on the opportunity to Secretary of State is correct in her assessment the Kremlin did this in two thousand sixteen to helping Donald Trump to power and yes of course they would it again in two thousand twenty because the Kremlin playbook remains the same they haven't been held to account for their attack on our democracy in two thousand Sixteen Donald Trump made sure of that and Donald trump has been giving Putin what he wants on his wishlist including Syria and so we have to keep pointing out that the trump crime family must again steal the presidential election in order to escape justice the Republican Party must hold onto power in twenty twenty in order to escape accountability Russia but actually sanctioned Russia pass sanctions that really hold Putin is intercourse bollocks accountable and then one of the things are going to do is finally pass that big sweeping corruption investigation into Putin and his Mafia state which the Obama Administration passed as part of their punishment of Russia for attacking our democracy in two thousand sixteen which trump completely refused to do he just basically just copied and pasted some Forbes article on the richest Russians and that was it if a Democrat wins just like they did in two thousand sixteen to make sure that the Russian assets stays in the White House so Secretary Clinton is absolutely correct in her assessment went of the Kremlin strategy in the upcoming twenty twenty election and a stupid conformist remarks by Mayor P and Bego just reveal that they were they're playing with popularity politics playing with like a calculating campaign consultant driven B. S. soundbites rather than the heart of our nation security which is confronting the many grey areas of Kremlin aggression how it works it's very disappointing I talking heads who lack brainpower like they're following the leads of weak willed men who are so afraid of seeming alarmist that they let violence or they talk about the abuse of migrants at the border this is connected to the fact that trump is backed up by a Mafia Syndicate fact that Russia is interested in her and was doing the same propaganda in social media manipulation tactics.

"Breath I'm Sarah Kenser the author of the bestselling book the view from Flyover Country and the upcoming book hiding in plain sight I'm Andrea Chalupa journalist and filmmaker and the around the world we're beginning our show today with very sad news Elijah Cummings the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee died suddenly last week at age six st eight this is a tremendous loss for our country cummings is probably the most universally liked entrusted Democrat and Congress everybody respected him putting new and very progressive representatives Pelosi and other old school Democrats and the other Democrats who are deeply engaged in the trump corruption investigations in a fractious era cummings who is known for his moral integrity and commitment to accountability was the Linchpin Holding Democrats in Congress together and now he's John Members of Congress seemed shocked by his death including his close friends cummings had worked until the end signing subpoenas hours before he died his cause of death was listed complications from a long illness but the illness remains unnamed though he had had heart surgery in two thousand seventeen in September two thousand nine hundred Cummings told the Baltimore Sun that he was in good health cummings is involved in the trump Russia investigation from the very start he is the person who sent the letter to Mike Pence in Two Thousand Sixteen Documenting Michael Flynn's illicit activity a letter which proves pence Newel Flynn's crimes and did nothing about them this is important now is people consider whether pence can be impeached along with trump cummings also oversaw the Mike Owing hearing in February twenty nine thousand nine hundred which is probably the most effective public hearing regarding trump and his mafia ties though we didn't know it at the time investigations radically curved or shut down after that point when you watch that hearing you can see the respect that cummings commanded among his peers and his uncompromising stance against corruption what he did not be replicated and he will be impossible to replace coming spent the last two months of his life being attacked by the trump administration while facing threats personal security immediately following Muller's week will testimony on July twenty fourth a testimony that nonetheless demonstrated trump had committed numerous impeached offenses Cummings gave impassioned plea for Americans to be vigilant and to fight for their democracy not about not liking the president is loving democracy it's about loving our country it's about making a difference for generations yet one that's what this is all about and I'm begging I'm begging the American people to pay attention to what is going Orne because if you WANNA have a democracy intact for your children and your children and generations yet unborn We have got to God this moment this is our watch that clip of Cummings went viral three days later on July twenty seventh at around six am Trump went on twitter tirade insulting Cummings here's a sampling of what he said representative. Elijah cummings has been a brutal bully shouting and screaming at the eight men and women of Border Patrol about conditions at the southern border when actually is Baltimore district is far worse and more dangerous his district is considered the worst in the USA. as proven last week during a congressional tour the borders clean efficient well-run just very crowded coming district is a disgusting rat and rodent infested mess not that language of infestation which we hear over and over again from trump if he had spent more time in Baltimore maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous and filthy place things responded by saying Mr President I go home to my district daily each morning I wake up and then go and fight for my neighbors. It's my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the executive branch but it's my moral duty to fight for my constituents and in follow up tweets coming went on to detail the ways he's done just that what no one knew at the time was that just hours before trump's tweets someone had tried to break into cummings home on August second coming spoke publicly about the break in saying quote individual attempted to gain entry into my residents at approximately three forty a m on Saturday ally twenty-seventh I was notified of the intrusion by my security system and I scared the intruder away by yelling before the person gained entry into the residential portion of the House this prompted an investigation by congressional security officials as to according to have all places Fox News and I quote whether the break in was a random crime or if there is a threat nexus tied to cummings due to trump's comments and then trump hours after the news that robbery was made public tweeted sarcastically really bad news the Baltimore House of Elijah Cummings was robbed too bad officials I found the person who broke into his house or concluded whether trump or anyone tied to or inspired by trump was involved we don't know now if this investigation in is still ongoing one surprising thing about Elijah Cummings is that even though he was one of the most determined investigators have trump corruption he was slow to call for impeachment compared to his colleagues he finally did so on September twenty fourth as Chairman of the House Oversight Committee he then became one of three committee heads running the investigation coming tweeted when the history books are written about this tumultuous era I want them to show that I was among those in the House of Representatives who stood up to lawlessness tyranny and now a few weeks later he's dead so Andrea thought son Elijah Cummings his legacy his death. The House is left to do now well Elijah Cummings stood for are what is needed in this moment in history and that is moral progress moral progress you get advance in technology and science but without the moral progress your empty as a society case in point Nazi scientists that did experiments on live people for instance how many of those Nazi scientists have but they were lacking in any morals and so what we need in this moment to who cleanser system of Jeffrey Epstein who through his money around including to Mit oh what we need in this moment to cleanser system from bloodsoaked Russian oligarchs money around including institutions like Harvard and Cambridge and Oxford and so forth and the Center for Foreign Relations is moral progress at the heart of everything that's needed in this moment right now is for the moral progress to catch up to where we are with advancements of science and technology because without it we're doing and Elijah Cummings stood for that and he showed up for his community so for all of us feeling his great loss in this moment the number one thing that you need to do to honor him especially in this critical you sure that we are facing which is twenty twenty where you have the trump family that must stay in power to avoid facing justice that is what was avalanched by the Miller report that Donald Trump is a criminal and that he should he would otherwise be facing a court hearing with the fact that he's president based on some you know just a few decades old DOJ memos and so forth right will always keep reminding you that just you understand what this how high the stakes are in two thousand twenty so if you want to honor and we all must now honor the legacy the hard work sacrifice of Elijah Cummings how far he went as an example of the best of America the best of our nation's capable of the best way to for him now is to show up show up show up and we now have to fight like hell because if we don't it's going to get harder fight if we don't fight our hearts out now in the little time that we have left the cage doors are closing on us and pretty soon we're going to have to fight like the protesters in Hong Kong long were they show up to protest with letters saying goodbye to their parents in their backpacks because they might not come back because he might be killed that's what that's what the protesters are doing now. In Hong Kong so to avoid our country getting to that point which it very well could I remember we are the crazy ladies that I've been telling you what to expect and people haven't listen to us for so long so now we're telling we're running out of time we're running out of time and so you need to.

"I came back from from shooting Kennedy and came back into the green room and he was on and I was like Holy Shit. You've gotta be kidding me and then one of the producers for the show goes he had a hit the smarting with gray hair like he was on a Fox News show this morning with gray hair and then that evening he's on with not one by by the way if you're a man in your seventies what the fuck are you doing dying your hair. You Look Insane. You see Lou. Dobbs will do that to some of these like really you're seventy five and you don't have one gray hair. You know how crazy that looks guys wrinkly face with not one gray hair when you're still sleeping with children you gotta put it every bit of Cather. Try and bridge the gap. You're trying to get this eight year old buzzer not that's why I got the nine year old hat on. You know you gotTa do what you can you going going undercover as the kid exacting operation all right. I'll pass these dirty pedophile in Washington. My sweet sweet ass. I will say tolls CEST. Tulsi Gabbard is is look. She took one step further further winning me over and winning you over to that. I thought was pretty. It is almost as if she knows that she's courting some MHM degree of the Libertarian Support because she cosponsored in audit the Fed bell which was like that was kind of out of left field to me. I mean I always thought of Tulsi as a one trick pony. You know the war issue and okay fine. I don't care that's your one trick is is the most important trick and you've got that right so I'll I'll let this other stuff go but now you're telling me she's GonNa fuck in. She's down for auditing the Fed like where. Where did that even come from? I'm sorry someone must be inner ear or something I mean I know that she's gone to the Ron Paul Institute before so maybe one of those guys got it you know maybe someone explained it to her or that. There's a connection between the war state and central banking like it's funded yeah. Oh it's not a coincidence rate that like I if you look at the Federal Reserve was created in nineteen thirteen was at five years later were in a world war. A couple decades later were in another world war. It's and then we basically have been at war since then. It's not a coincidence that the century of total war was the century that we had the Federal Reserve. That's because even teyat rations. It's totally different ballpark. You know well yeah but you still had the Fed printing up a ton of money the fucking at and of course none of this saying if we don't have to taxed for it it's much easier for people to go all right. You can kill people over there. Oh absolutely as long as I can still you know eat my barbecue on Sundays and car payments and even if if you have to <hes> even if you if you just borrowing the money without you know <hes> messing with the interest rates or printing money you're going in a see that in the interest rates rate right if you're just selling government bonds you're going to see that in an open market not the Fed market like a genuine open market. You're going to see that an interest rates. There's going to be an effect there. So there's all these natural factors that will kind of at they will at least put a lot of pressure on the people <hes> who might eventually go yet. Do we really fighting for by and pretend like e Got Goldie. GotTa covered yet. That's right. I guess we'll take.

"Table. David Spade Fred savage and Titus Burgess this week on the view on A._B._C.. Tomorrow Democratic presidential candidate better work is live on the view with his plan to reignite a campaign that went from red hot to not flood his wife Amy Hoover Sanders joins him for their first national national interview together and the SUCC- seems dealer from girls Chip Cookie Syrah boasts Sharon why he still single and taking his time to find love. Hey we are back with congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard Megan yes so congressman the lineup for the next democratic debate with just announced and this time you're going to be on stage with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. You called her attack on Biden a political ploy. I pressed her on this when she was on the show a few two weeks ago <hes> I WANNA know. Do you expect more confrontations this time time around and will you call it for what it is like you did last time I will continue to call it for what it is. I think that voters across this country deserve to see the contrast positions is that we have amongst our candidates and the Democratic primary <hes> but you know attacks just for the sake personal attacks attacks just for the sake of trying to push yourself forward <hes> in the campaign. I think our underhanded do I I do I do. I mean really when it came out. Her position was the same as what Biden is saying. His position is but the thing that I'm looking forward to doing it. The debates and it's an important platform to have this opportunity in front of millions of people is really to talk about some of the things we discussed today about the most important responsibility of the president has is commander in chief and the experience that I bring <hes> both as a soldier for over sixteen years <hes> deployed twice to the Middle East serving Congress almost seven years on Foreign Affairs Armed Services.

"To run for President Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard yeah talking a little bit today about the situation down in Puerto Rico Rico yes and <hes> you traveled there and just stand in solidarity with the protesters who are calling the governor on him to resign so tell us what you saw what you heard it was incredible. You know the energy you can in some of the video and some of the pictures but it's unlike any other protests I've ever seen where you have thousands of people coming together. <hes> people who are elderly walking with Canes Little Kids Families Students people of all ages walks of life singing playing music dancing and really standing with a unified voice. Yes calling on the governor to resign but really what's driving. This is more than these leaked chats. It's early this long standing corruption that people there have been suffering under and that really came to light in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria so with a lot of the folks that I talked to you. They said this is about life and death <hes> seeing their loved ones struggle and suffer because they couldn't get clean water after the hurricane for months. They couldn't get electricity so this is a breaking point and I don't think they're going to back down until he resigns just the right thing. What do you think it's odd that we're seeing this little tiny places? This idea that the the the rule of law doesn't is seems to be eroding that that's that's the danger and I was asking some of the folks there what happens if he doesn't and that's one of their fears and he doesn't resign than it shows. There's no accountability you know Oh you can get away with not just saying really really offensive things and making threats against women and other government officials but you can get away with stealing taxpayer dollars winding your own pockets with dollars that were meant to help people their greatest greatest need medicaid money sounds familiar across the board congresswoman..
