"You don't want to rush back from an oblique Nico Horner specifically. Obviously it needs to be healthy and stay on the field. But he, I think he could miss anywhere from two to four weeks of the regular season. And you know, it'd be great if it was like 5, 6 games. I think that comes would be thrilled with that, but they're not going to rush things. There's no reason for them to do that. The options. I think Trey Mancini may get a shot at right field. Mike tuchman has a really good chance of making this team now. Patrick wisdom will get some shot at right field, which then opens up playing time at third base. So there's a lot of moving parts here and with Mancini that may open time up at DH. So who else makes the team fans could get excited about a prospect like Matt mervis, maybe making the team because of this I'd be surprised if that happens. I wouldn't count on Brennan Davis being ready to make the opening day roster, although he certainly part of the future, someone they believe if he can stay healthy, he's a big part of their future. And then something opening up at third base, if wisdom is playing more right field, suddenly always Nick madrigal at third base, not as big of a look at this weird experiment the cubs are running and is this a reality situation because I've talked to people that are really excited about him offensively because they freely admit now he shouldn't have been on the opening day roster. He should have stayed back in Arizona continued to rehab, not pushed so hard and he just wasn't a 100% maybe they were like two weeks in the season where he was healthy and looked like the guy that was drafted forth by the White Sox years ago. I want to believe in Nick madrigal. So holding out hope I would enjoy it if he were good. I'd want to ask about two potential infield weak spots. So with Wilson Contreras last season, the cubs ranked 6th in catcher war without him, they project to finish 28th, so why let him leave, particularly to go to your biggest rival, that's one spot. If he does all the little things as well as being a great offensive player, then sure, the cubs would love that. That's not the situation they have. It's just, they don't have that prospect ready at Miguel Maya, maybe someday will be that guy. Maybe at some point this year. But Jan Gomes talked to pictures about Jan Gomes and you just get over the top praise about how much work he puts in in between the games, whether it's meetings with the coaches and catchers and pitchers or showing up for bullpens and breaking down all the little things and giving little advice, being able to adjust on the fly in game because he sees certain things and it's like, you know what? The game plan we had is great, but I think if we tweak it slightly here, he gets a lot of praise for constantly being on top of things during a game. He's in the coach's ears. He's constantly thinking and I've had multiple people say he's going to be a manager. And I think they look at Tucker barnhart similarly. I think offensively, Jan Gomes probably has more upside than Tucker. I don't know how real this is, but I was looking at Jan Gomes offense. And it seems to always go down when he goes to a new team when he's trying to get to know new pitchers. And he's admitted to me that he's like, oh, my only focus when I come to a new team is trying to understand these pictures and get the best out of them. So I'm curious to see if the offense is a little better this year for him because it was in the second half last year. I don't know if randomness, if it's just completely random and I'm falling for it or what, but I'm curious to see if he can be close to a league average bat. I'd be surprised if Tucker is. But yeah, that's what they want from their catchers and the reality is they didn't feel that Wilson was giving them that. He's a great offensive player and to be a consistently great offensive player. You need to spend time working on that. A lot of time working on that and that can take away from the other responsibilities that come with catching. And sometimes that works fine. Sometimes it doesn't when you have a really veteran pitching staff. Great. He could catch the 2016 cubs pitching staff because there was nobody young on that staff.

The average ratio for players who debuted in the pd era and have three hundred or more homers is point seven so he has right there and for players who debuted post pd era and have three hundred plus homers. The average is point seven four so again it pretty much tracks. He has pretty much average. It was hard to tell at the time but yeah it sort of fits and he has a breakdown by when they debuted. So if you debuted say in the live ball era as he calls it. Nineteen twenty to nineteen forty one than the average ratio was like point six. That's for all players league wide expansion era nineteen sixty one to seventy six. It was point six one free agency era seventy seven to ninety three. It climbs two point seven five. Pd era which he's defending is ninety. Four to two thousand five than its point. Eight one and now post. Pd era two thousand six to present. The average ratio is point eight six. It also raises the interesting question that the Reds are going to face at the end of the season. Tucker is going to be 31 in January. They have an option on him at the end of the year. How much value do you put on Tucker's leadership, his defensive abilities, his ability to call a game. His ability to frame pitches, his ability to control running games, his leadership in the clubhouse. How much value you do you put on that. And here's a word, reallocate it someplace else in the off season when you've got a rookie catcher, and the The bonus of having a rookie player is It's the minimum it's about $550,000. They've got a team option for next year with Tucker Barnhart. You explore. Tyler Stevenson is the first baseman whenever the D H comes to the National League next year. Absolutely, Yeah, interesting. It really would be probably prolong his career a little bit, too. He's got a great back. The more I think of Tucker Barnhart. Wouldn't there be half the league wanting this guy? I would think so. I would think he would have many suitors if he became a free agent, and he's going to garner a big deal. If you can keep him for one more year under that team option team option is 7.5 million, So they're gonna have to weigh that and hopefully it's not a penny pinching situation. Because starker Barnhardt has been one of the heart and souls of this team. I know that they haven't had a ton of success. We've explored whether or not there are chemistry issues between he and Tucker Barnhart well Tyler Stevenson has caught him as well. The results have been the same. Ah, Is it the selection of a certain pitches? He throwing his changeup too much? Is he not throwing his changeup? Enough? Is he throwing a slider too often? What's up with his fastball? I don't know what I do know Is this this team, which I think still does harbor postseason aspirations doesn't go anywhere. If Luis Castillo continues to be as unreliable as he's been so far this year, he has struggled at home. He has struggled on the road. He has struggled when he's given runs early. He has struggled when he has to pitch in close games because the team doesn't hit. He has struggled regardless of who the catcher is. He has struggled in all but one start so far this season. The other question is, what do you do with him? It's worth pointing out. Louise Castillo does have options. Can you imagine how jarring it would be? Who take the guy. Former All Star who was your opening day starter. And send him to Louisville. It also seems somewhat over reactionary and it does feel like that. There are some steps in between doing nothing. I'm sending him to Louisville. One of those steps is Derrick Johnson. One of the best pitching coaches and baseball. We've given you a lot of dudes like the CNO Perez and Jeff Hoffman and guys like that. Pitchers who, quite frankly, are not that central to this team Success. You've got to get Luis Castillo fixed. Luis Castillo is a cornerstone of foundational piece off this franchise. We've talked a lot over the last two years about giving Derek Johnson reclamation projects or giving him guys that used to be good, but haven't been good before, like Sonny Gray, seeing what he could squeeze if you can squeeze even more out of a guy like Trevor Bauer, seeing what he could do with guys that you know you sign on the cheap and maybe Derek Johnson can get something out of them. Condemn Eric Johnson Fix Luis Castillo If he's as good of a pitching coaches. Everybody claims the answer has to be yes. There's moving him to the bullpen. Uh, I guess I would ask fine.
