"You don't want to rush back from an oblique Nico Horner specifically. Similar situation in my mind, he came to camp in 2021, noticeably stronger and bulkier, suffered a few muscle injuries that year. One was a noble tried to come back at around three and a half weeks. It minor league rehab stint immediately re injured himself was out another three and a half weeks at total of 7 weeks. I think I don't want to guarantee anything, but I think the worst case scenario without setbacks is probably missing the first month. And I think that's fine. I think if that's what ends up happening, you want him to be a 100%. You don't want him. You can talk a lot about what are the rosiest scenarios for the cubs offense. And those rosiest scenarios include, say, Suzuki turning into a superstar level offensive player, which I think he's got some of the traits that you look for. Obviously it needs to be healthy and stay on the field. But he, I think he could miss anywhere from two to four weeks of the regular season. And you know, it'd be great if it was like 5, 6 games. I think that comes would be thrilled with that, but they're not going to rush things. There's no reason for them to do that. The options. I think Trey Mancini may get a shot at right field. Mike tuchman has a really good chance of making this team now. Patrick wisdom will get some shot at right field, which then opens up playing time at third base. So there's a lot of moving parts here and with Mancini that may open time up at DH. So who else makes the team fans could get excited about a prospect like Matt mervis, maybe making the team because of this I'd be surprised if that happens. I wouldn't count on Brennan Davis being ready to make the opening day roster, although he certainly part of the future, someone they believe if he can stay healthy, he's a big part of their future. And then something opening up at third base, if wisdom is playing more right field, suddenly always Nick madrigal at third base, not as big of a look at this weird experiment the cubs are running and is this a reality situation because I've talked to people that are really excited about him offensively because they freely admit now he shouldn't have been on the opening day roster. He should have stayed back in Arizona continued to rehab, not pushed so hard and he just wasn't a 100% maybe they were like two weeks in the season where he was healthy and looked like the guy that was drafted forth by the White Sox years ago. I want to believe in Nick madrigal. So holding out hope I would enjoy it if he were good. I'd want to ask about two potential infield weak spots. So with Wilson Contreras last season, the cubs ranked 6th in catcher war without him, they project to finish 28th, so why let him leave, particularly to go to your biggest rival, that's one spot. Another one is for space, which unlike catcher was a weak spot last year too, and still looks like one this year, at least according to the projections, 5th lowest war in 2022, projected for fourth lowest in 2023, Eric Hosmer is here. There's a correlation there. So tell us about what happened and what didn't happen at catcher in first base this winter. Yeah, so catcher, I think this is a nuanced topic that essentially the cubs want to go in a different direction with how they handle that position. I think yon Gomes is a perfect example of what they're looking for. They're go look at how the Astros handled a position, the Yankees post Gary Sanchez, just most of the good teams, the way they handle catcher is offensive secondary, right? If you have a guy in a rookie contract like Will Smith in LA, then sure, go for it. Ride that guy. If he does all the little things as well as being a great offensive player, then sure, the cubs would love that. That's not the situation they have. It's just, they don't have that prospect ready at Miguel Maya, maybe someday will be that guy. Maybe at some point this year. But Jan Gomes talked to pictures about Jan Gomes and you just get over the top praise about how much work he puts in in between the games, whether it's meetings with the coaches and catchers and pitchers or showing up for bullpens and breaking down all the little things and giving little advice, being able to adjust on the fly in game because he sees certain things and it's like, you know what? The game plan we had is great, but I think if we tweak it slightly here, he gets a lot of praise for constantly being on top of things during a game. He's in the coach's ears. He's constantly thinking and I've had multiple people say he's going to be a manager. And I think they look at Tucker barnhart similarly. I think offensively, Jan Gomes probably has more upside than Tucker. I don't know how real this is, but I was looking at Jan Gomes offense. And it seems to always go down when he goes to a new team when he's trying to get to know new pitchers. And he's admitted to me that he's like, oh, my only focus when I come to a new team is trying to understand these pictures and get the best out of them. So I'm curious to see if the offense is a little better this year for him because it was in the second half last year. I don't know if randomness, if it's just completely random and I'm falling for it or what, but I'm curious to see if he can be close to a league average bat. I'd be surprised if Tucker is. But yeah, that's what they want from their catchers and the reality is they didn't feel that Wilson was giving them that. He's a great offensive player and to be a consistently great offensive player. You need to spend time working on that. A lot of time working on that and that can take away from the other responsibilities that come with catching. And sometimes that works fine. Sometimes it doesn't when you have a really veteran pitching staff. Great. He could catch the 2016 cubs pitching staff because there was nobody young on that staff.

"Ballpark and pick up Slim Jim and Mike sells potato chips at Kroger stores. Throughout Reds country. 700 WLW. It is just about time for baseball in Chicago. As the Reds and Cubs wrap up seasons play against each other back to regularly, we go now and with all the play by play, here's Tommy thrown All right. Thank you. Yet another beautiful night for baseball. We've got a pretty good breeze blowing from left to right here. Wrigley Field tonight and once again, the windy city living up to its reputation. Let's take a look at tonight's starting lineup for This series. Wrap up we begin with David Bells visiting Reds. The Reds are to tie for that second wild card spot after the Padres lost last night and the Reds one Reds are 74 66. Heating things up is the second baseman Jonathan Indian hitting second end in center field. Tyler Nay Quinn. Nick Castellanos plays right field. He bats third, batting fourth at first base. Joey Votto Mike Moustakas at third base bats, fifth. Six. The shortstop Kyle Farmer, Tucker Barnhart, catching bats, seventh, hitting eight the left fielder Matt Chirac and batting ninth, pitching Vladimir Gutierrez again for the Reds. It'll be India Quinn Castano's Votto Moustakas farmer. Heart Heart truck, and Gutierrez, now for Andy Green's Chicago Cubs course. They're managed by David Ross. He remains out. Quarantining with Covid. Cubs are 64 76 there in fourth place in the central Division 21 games back, leading off the center fielder Rafael Ortega. Frank Swindle snapped his eight game hit streak. Last night. He plays first base and bats, second, hitting third in left field, Ian Happ Willson Contreras will catch and bat fourth batting 5th and 3rd base, Patrick wisdom. Hitting six. The right fielder Jason Heyward, batting seventh, the second baseman David Body. Hitting eight the shortstop Sergio Up Contra and pitching and batting ninth. Alec Mills again for the Cubs. It'll be Ortega swindle Hap. Contreras, Wisdom Hayward Body Al Contra and Mills, Alec Mills pitching Least once again to be joined by Chris Welch. I'm Tommy throw great to be with you tonight from Wrigley Field in Chicago. Alex Mills, Chris comes in with a even six and six record. The Reds have face him twice this year. When he has started, Reds beat him both times. This is a guy that really doesn't have a lot of flash, but when he's on he can. He can beat you because he seems to have pretty good command, a pretty good idea what he wants to do Well, they better have good command because he doesn't throw very hard, but I would call him a garden variety right hander with a limited upside. As far as as below. In fact, he's one of the slowest pitchers in the league will get to that later on, but he's legitimately has five or six different pitches. He's got good command and his his games always tried to get the hitter a little bit off balance. So they hit it on the end of the bat rather than swing and miss it. Jonathan India hit his fifth leadoff home run of the year last night. He leads off here standing in Reds and Cubs. Hope you enjoy it. Let's play first pitches, a called strike on the outside corner and east to India and were underway and one Count on Jonathan India game getting started right on time at 6 40 this evening. Here's the one pitch, Sandy just off the outside corner, One ball and one strike. Mills loves to live down there lowing away all night long..

"The dodgers have lost a couple and the giants too. But if i were an nfl team staring down one of those teams in wildcard. I would feel not confident. Maybe i would maybe not feel confident. So there's that yeah well we will return to the raise. A little later on in a step last segment wanted to follow up on something. You sort of idly mused about when we were talking about mika cabrera's five hundred home run. You mentioned that he had hit his five hundred home runs off of three hundred forty six different pitchers which yep sounded like a lotta pictures. But it's kind of hard to tell his that a high ratio or low ratio. Not necessarily the sort of thing you can answer off the cuff as you are recording a podcast. Fortunately we have very smart and industrious listeners. Who are able to look these things up in motivated to look these things up so we got an email from erin who looked into this question. He says i'm trying to learn python. And i decided to mix this interest with my favorite podcast generate some compelling problems to solve and thanks to the amazing work at retro sheet dot org. I was able to lend a little insight into megs question. Miguel cabrera's pitcher to homerun ratio is point six nine going back to nineteen fifteen. The average pitcher to home run ratio for all players is point seven one. That's calculated by taking the sum of unique pitchers for each player in the set divided by the sum of runs for each player in the set. So he's close to that pace but erin says. I thought this list is likely skewed by many players with just a few home runs after all every time someone hits a home run against a unique pitcher. They increase the chances that their next home run. We'll come against a pitcher. They have already taken deep breaking down the pitcher to home ratio in one hundred homerun segments shows a predictable trend. More home runs lower pitcher to home run ratio. The five hundred homer club has an average ratio of point. Four eight so for someone who homered as much. As miguel cabrera he has hit homers against a comparatively large number of pitchers. So if you have fewer than a hundred career homers over the course of baseball history. Aaron finds that the average pitcher to hoberman ratio is point eight two but if you have say seven hundred plus home runs and it's a small group than the average ratio is point five one however aaron rights. While doing this research i also found it fund that the player with the most home runs without touching up the same pitcher twice is roberto perez with forty six metre sheet database doesn't include twenty twenty one games and roberto has homered six times this year. Aaron didn't check to see if he has a duplicate so far. If so keith. Lockhart will own that distinction with forty four. He shared that number with tucker barnhart heading into the twenty twenty one season but he has not checked tucker barnhart seven homers this year. Aaron says he also wondered who has taken the most pitchers deep and as you would expect. It is usual suspects. Barry bonds four hundred forty nine albert pujols four hundred. Twenty eight and alex rodriguez four hundred twenty two anti-pc showed his work in linked to it. As i will. However i had a follow up for erin i said there must be an era effect right because miguel cabrera's ratio is high. Forty five hundred homer guy. He has homers against a comparatively large number of pitchers because they're so many pitchers used per game. Think and so. Many pitchers used per season these days. And they're just more teams and everything. I mean if you were playing in an era where there were like sixteen teams. And all of the starters were pitching complete games all the time right. Then you expect that your ratio would be different from today where there thirty teams and you're facing multiple pitchers per game. So i asked him if he could check how the career ratios vary by career. Start date and he has looked into that and i will link to what he found there. Basically when you adjust for the era effect. Miguel cabrera's pitcher to run ratio is pretty normal especially if you look at the number of home runs he has hit so if you just for both how many homers he is hit and when he is hit them he is actually not that unusual. I mentioned that his ratio is point. Six nine well. The average ratio for players who debuted in the pd era and have three hundred or more homers is point seven so he has right there and for players who debuted post pd era and have three hundred plus homers. The average is point seven four so again it pretty much tracks. He has pretty much average. It was hard to tell at the time but yeah it sort of fits and he has a breakdown by when they debuted. So if you debuted say in the live ball era as he calls it. Nineteen twenty to nineteen forty one than the average ratio was like point six. That's for all players league wide expansion era nineteen sixty one to seventy six. It was point six one free agency era seventy seven to ninety three. It climbs two point seven five. Pd era which he's defending is ninety. Four to two thousand five than its point. Eight one and now post. Pd era two thousand six to present. The average ratio is point eight six. So it's a lot different from how it used to be but cabrera Kind of what you would expect if you do all of that. Research that aired did presented to us so thanks to him for that. Thanks to him and surrey mega. You're not special at all just some just some games with five hundred home. Yup so that was sort of step last but it was not actually the stat blessed. But thank you for that anyway. Erin so just the less thing before we get to some e mails. We talked about how the as had fallen behind the mariners in the al west and wild card races. You know who the as could use is frank sh- mundell i think if the as had frank swindell. Lp player of the week in new jersey native they probably would not be behind the mariners. Now and the as very recently did have freshmen. Tell but like everyone else said the world they did. That suspect that frank wendell was about to be one of the very best hitters in baseball over the past month or more so for those who have not followed the frank the pinks when del story he has powered the cubs to seven straight. Wins as we speak and he is done so in sort of historic fashion so according to espn stats and info. He is the first. Mlb player with a go ahead. Rbi in the sixth inning or later of four straight games over the past forty years so that sounds impressive. But if that's too many qualifiers for you then you can just look at french. Dell's stats for the cubs. Because he has now played thirty three games and had one hundred thirty three plate appearances for chicago. And he's hitting a cool three seventy four four twenty one six.

"That is among the best in baseball. And so i wanna talk about tucker barnhart in tyler stevenson. Because i think the last time i talked with you tucker had just gotten a cincinnati. You had been teammates with him. You had been mentoring him. What has it been like to watch him. Evolve into a gold glove catcher. Somebody who is among the best in his sport at handling pitchers and this year at least somebody who's been Productive with the bad as well. He's putting the work man i mean. He's he's always been a defensive guy. I Allow the new things that have come out as framing and stuff like that is put him into a different category. But you know he's always always take your in with something and we talked I think it was about seven years ago when i still was playing. You had mentioned some and he kind of just shrug it off and five years later. He he comes up to look. I'm gonna do this. And i really know you told me about five years ago. But you know he. He's he's a veteran guy. Now that knows what he has to behind the plate and and knows what he has to do to get ready. And and he put it together. And for tyler's be up there with them you know is just is great for him to continue to build and become a better catcher. Yeah let's let's talk about tyler. I'm of the belief this guy's going to be an all star and one of the most highly touted reds prospects in decades. Going all the way back to johnny bench. He certainly has helped out with the bat but but his his his role tools as a catcher have have been refined in the reds organization. You've had something to do with that. So walk me through what it's been like to watch the development of tyler stevenson. You know when got him that was a catcher but you know was just he. He wasn't as mature as that. You want somebody back. There say gynecology and there was active. We but every.

"What I'm looking for Blue. Amen. It works fast, and you won't take the official partner of Major League Baseball and the Cincinnati Reds. It's Tommy through the voice of the Reds. A crack of one of the ballpark usually indicates a solid base hit at your home or business, though a crack of wood could mean termites rose Pest solutions founded in Cincinnati over 160 years ago, safeguards against pests like termites, ants and mosquitoes. They're always ready to prevent pesky intruders and have even been named an official partner of the Reds. Got a pest problem. Rose is the solution. All the pros at rose at 809 66 rows or go to rose pest solutions dot com. Here we go. The bottom of the second inning. Brewers have a one Nothing lead, and we are visiting now, with Mark Sheldon, our good friend from MLB dot com who Decided he would kindly swing by and chat with us for a bit. Vladimir Gutierrez returns the mound to face routed to less for pitch on the way is a strike called Backdoor Curveball. Starting off this is bad, too rowdy to last. The count is owned one Mark. How's Milwaukee treating you so far? Extremely well. I understand. You went for a little bit of a run today. Pitches high One ball one strike. You may have heard of that. Yes, uh, got to do three miles by the lake, and it's been It's been a challenge getting back into running these last few months as Ran a lot for many years and then didn't for pandemic. I've found it. So much of a challenge to get back into running that I haven't got into running to begin with. That's a good move. Yeah, well, you know, Mark the only running I remember you doing Was when you There we go. Oh, boy. He is he is. That's what ruined me. That's why I stopped running. Picking girls. Seriously old scabs. Hear the pitches up and in that was the best. That was outstanding entertainment for us that no, you stash stash stash stash ruined my running career. Those of us didn't know you and that we can actually see you the next day and tell you how good you look. It was fun. I don't regret doing it. Okay, well Something to be said for that. I'm not sure what foul down the left headline. Better better than the rest of us because none of us are out there running. And there's a reason for that. Yes, we didn't want to do that. Yeah. And bring back the stash stash. You noticed? Not yet. At least not yet. I may maybe I ruined it. You might have. They said, Well, you have hit an all time low. I bet it will be back. That was fun to watch. Here's the 22 pitch down and in Now it's a full count on rowdy Tellez. Three balls, two strikes account. Nobody on nobody out. And Gutierrez through the signs with his catcher Tucker Barnhart. Here's the right handers payoff pitch. Albeck. Mark get some injury updates to pass along. I believe it seemed like David Tuck a little bit about Nixon's L Today and a few others. Yeah, Nixon's L sounds like he's making some progress the last few days. He's been running with something he hadn't done since our last report, and he's been doing some running, doing some fielding, some hitting back in Cincinnati, and so far so good. They feel like he might be at the point where is turning a corner payoff down the way Ball four leadoff walk. Rowdy Tellez, who is just one for six in his brief tenure with the Brewers, not the guy that you want to walk to start an inning. It's not as though rowdy Tellez is a big burner on the basis, but Just a guy that's been a struggling hitter and You give the Brewers a base runner? Here's Jackie Bradley Jr. Hitting just 1. 67 6 homers 23 R B. I's That seems like that could be some good news with They're not ready to put a timetable on him. Yet they've kind of thrown out late July is a kind of in the ether as a possible return, but I think once he starts really running and doing it, that things might come quickly. Other guys that have been out. Of course, we've been talking about Lorenzen and Bullpen guys like Lucas Sims, TJ Antone. I I think it seems reasonable right that Lorenzen will be here to start the second half Correct Barring any Odd stuff that happens in Louisville during the All Star break. He's supposed to pitch on back to back days, but I would imagine he will be activated on the Friday the 16th to start that second half. The Oh one pitch to Jackie Bradley Jr swinging into miss and the count is open to how long before the Reds have to make a decision regarding Jeff Hoffman. Uh, also, I would think Friday the 16th. I don't. I don't know what is. I think you get a 30 day rehab assignment, and I'm going to guess that at some point Maybe on day 30 might be close to the date of the 16th as well. I think you'll see him in the Reds uniform. I'm going to. I'm going to predict the bullpen. Ground ball pulled foul right side. I'll go right there with you. I think that sounds pretty reasonable and I would imagine there's gonna be some changes in that bullpen. There's a couple guys are not going to be here that are here right now. You get the sense that a guy like Sean Doolittle. As Really have you seen enough here over his last few games on the move to first base that he's kind of saved his Positioning on this scene. That's a tough one. He's had been better, that's for sure. And he's been working on it. But I would say he's definitely still hasn't moved up from those bottom. Number six or number seven or eight guys. Jackie Bradley Jr swings and it's a lazy fly to center field. Wait. The ball is not carrying even a little bit in this place tonight, which is good news for Vladimir Gutierrez. I thought Bradley might have got that one pretty good, and it just died out there in medium depth center field. That's not the first one I've seen do that tonight. Sound good. It did. Look pretty good off the bat, and then just Faded into the glove of Tyler and a queen. One man out here in the second inning. And now the pitcher Freddie Peralta. This is not a guy that is known for. His aptitude at the plate. Peralta has just one hit. He'll be bunting here with rowdy to less at first base until is not a burner. Lob the first check on to less and less looks back to Gutierrez thinking what in the world makes you think that I would be running? Certainly isn't is built. Just keeping them honest, I guess Here's the stretch and the pitch breaking ball and a beauty over the inside corner. He had Peralta bailing out on that pitch and the count his own one. It'll be really interesting Mark. I think to see how the Reds handle the bullpen around the All Star break in with guys coming back. Gives David maybe some flexibility to things that he wasn't able to do. Some of the guys he's had because of struggles. But now that he's got a sense on what art warrant can do it, some other guys line drive caught by India flipped the first safe. Thank India might have been able to get it over hand throw, or maybe even a little side arm flipped at first. Instead, he tried along Underhanded scoop and couldn't get anything on it. But now they know what art Warren can do..

"Players and add that onto the fact that the rector in July and as good a position as they've been since 2014 and Charlie, you know in the rookies Jonathan India and Tyler Stevenson fast becoming The fans are just falling in love with these rookies and their producer. Both rookies have adjusted to the adjustments. They both went in slumps kind of a different points in May. But since then India has exploded and become one of the more productive table setters at the top of the line up at the Reds have had since since he Ju on top of that, Stevenson. He's the rare player who Doesn't start every day. But when he does you better enforced because you're that comfortable in what he brings to light up, um and again having two of those guys to have babies about five rookies in the entire National League on the same team together. It's kind of that new wave old waves with some of the veterans I mentioned early. You know, the trade deadline is coming. I'm often asked. Are they buyers? Are they sellers? Will they stand Pat? Hey, The next 2.5 or three weeks will tell us that And David E. Armbrister arm. Brewster asked me a question today on since the 3 60 on ESPN 15 30. Hey, come trade deadline if a team really wants Tucker Barnhart with the emergence of a Tyler Stevenson Charlie. I don't want the chemistry of this team to get upset, but Man if somebody really came hard after a guy like Tucker Barnhart I might have to look at it. You. Obviously you obviously have to get something up Good to get something good. That's the number one rule of making a trade. But it is worth noting that Tucker Barnhart numbers while it ticked below. Stevenson's are as good as they've been in Tucker's career, and not as far as which, as you would think. As far as Howard Stevenson. And then again what Stevenson is developing and working and building himself into a veteran presence as a catcher, and he has had those moments this season. You look at all the truly gold glove moments the Barnhart has had that you're the one that stands out to me is his double play to virtually win the game on a Thursday in ST Louis, Barnhart is one of the more harder to replace players and leaders on the Reds. My perspective on the situation. I I appreciate that, and man I've got to agree with you because every time we watching play what a phenomenal defensive player and then just batting from the left side Up. He's really, really improved there. Now, with this trade deadline, and you know, we all know that Nicosia who signed a four year $64 million contract, but the first two years opt out clauses. So I think reds fans, pins and needles that you know. Will he come back next year, man? Don't you just wish the Reds could hopefully tear up his current contract? And I mean keep this guy because he's the heart and soul of his team. You'd hate to lose him after this year. Nick Castellanos quietly as one of the best hitters in his age range. In all of baseball. You look at the players his age who have done what he has done, and there's the game superstars and from Scott's perspective from the plate make cost the others. Has performed extremely close to that level during his career, and on top of that is arguably the best hitter in baseball this season. So my perspective on Castano says he creates an urgency to win. It's almost as special of a season as Trevor Bauer season on the mound last year. Now the Reds are getting that at the plate. Which is even harder to to replicate and again cast the others creates. I think a sense of urgency to win this season and with the Reds Royals tonight eight 11th pitch Vladimir Duty, Ariz. On the mound against Mike Minor lefty. I mean, this is a critical stretch. They have to at least win two out of three and Casey and then you march into Milwaukee for for Charlie. Man, this is hi. This is high tension here. I mean, what more could you want in seven games upcoming against the Brewers? The only reason the Brewers are as far in front as they are right now is because of how they just beat up on bad teams over the last few weeks. Well, now read here you go. A team that isn't in the playoff race. That you can build some winds up upon gain more ground. All the birds heading into those pivotal games that pivotal start to the season. Oh, this is great stuff, Charlie. Thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to join us. We love Rayna. And thank you so much. This is great. Love it any time I'll talk to you soon. "Leading off. He flew out to left in his first at bat tonight. He is de aging again tonight. I would think, um, I don't know if it's by tomorrow. I doubt he plays in Game two. Tonight. They're playing a double header. Aquino is not in the lineup in Game one. But I would think, um, by the weekend, Votto would eventually try. He's going to have to try first base because what? What? What has been the hang up to this point is As he told Tommy Thrall and Chris Welch last week when he was in the in the radio booth. Um, he can swing the bat with a fractured thought. In the way it's healed. He experiences pain catching balls in the MIT at first base. Um, now there's some, you know, Jerry rigging the mitt you can do with with the cushion and padding. But he's going to have declared that hurdle before he's back up here in the first. This is is now third game in rehab, and he's done the D H thing at each of those. So you would think maybe an attempt over the weekend at first base tonight after the game Chick with extra innings time permitting. I was in his spot last night. It went right down to the wire. I think it was at 11 49 that Austin Elmore pulled the plug ins says Nope. You're not going to be needed. We're not going to have time for the extra rating shows like Bummer. Done in by the 34 minute first inning last night, and then the pace kind of picked up and I thought, all right, I might get on after the game before midnight, and then at the end, I was not on after the game. Because it ran right up until midnight with the postgame show all right back to a couple of things, and these are all leading up to As much as I opened the show by saying last night, I would argue was one of their better wins of the season. Based on everything that went into it, who they beat where they beat them. The loss they were coming off of and the way they performed in all facets Last night, Um there were a lot of reasons to be To be excited about last night's performance. But all this is going to lead me into after the news why it also leads to the frustration of this team. We talked about Vladimir Gutierrez. I want to talk about Tucker Barnhart because I don't think he gets enough credit and last night was a perfect example of two things he did for this team. He had a huge R B I double in the eighth inning, he added. The insurance run. They were up three to He made it 42 with the R B I double. It was a nine pitch at bat, found off pitch after pitch. After pitch. After pitch. And then line the double to add the fourth run. Then, in the ninth, the defensive play of the game the Cardinals put two on with nobody out and you're thinking Oh, and then, you know, give Mike Schultz enough chances and the manager of the Cardinals will but himself out of a chance, and he sure did last night, But Tucker took advantage of it on the butt out in front of the plate with two on and nobody out and Paul Goldschmidt on deck. Thank you, Mike Short. Um Tucker pounced on the bunt, and I mean like cat. Quick reflexes out of the Crouch Pound start. It throws to third for one. Suarez throws across the diamond for two from two on and nobody out to to out like that. And that's the value of Tucker Barnhart defensively, and he added the value offensively he now is hitting 2 73. He's getting on base 35% of the time. And his O P s is almost 800. Those are career best numbers in all three categories. Now it's June. We'll see what the wear and tear of a season does and what the other 100 121 115 Plus games do. But the numbers right now offensively have been impressive. He reworked his swing in the offseason. He is fully committed to not hitting right handed anymore. That has something to do with it, but it also and it's not a conversation as much for tonight, but it's hard not to have it. Enter your mind. It also raises the interesting question that the Reds are going to face at the end of the season. Tucker is going to be 31 in January. They have an option on him at the end of the year. They pick up the option. They owe him. 7.5 million. If they buy it out. It's a half million Obviously they have Tyler Stevenson. So do you. How much value do you put on Tucker's leadership, his defensive abilities, his ability to call a game. His ability to frame pitches, his ability to control running games, his leadership in the clubhouse. How much value you do you put on that. When the option would be 7.5 million versus how much could you take that money? And here's a word, reallocate it someplace else in the off season when you've got a rookie catcher, and the The bonus of having a rookie player is It's the minimum it's about $550,000. Could you have two catchers on the roster and look at it as we've got to really good catchers, and both can play first and will pay $8 million for two catchers. Rather than Half million for one. I think there will be an interesting conversation to be had after the season. The other guy I I continue to be very happy for is Jonathan India. Jonathan Indy had two hits last night. And if you noticed one was to left, and one was too, right. He went the other way on one of the two hits. India to me is finding his way and he's adjusting and I love it because you get off to the hot start. Throw him a lot of fastballs. He crushed fastballs, but he was like he was 10 for his 1st 21. It seems like every time he came up, he had runners on and he drove him in. He was like the best thing going with runners in scoring position. And what happened? Well, the word got around like, Hey, Why are we throwing this guy fastballs, throwing something with.

This has not been very good defensive team but it was last night. Here's david bell. David that play in the ninth inning jesse winker described it as a game. Changer it certainly was. "Malli goes to the mound tonight. He's too and one with a 3.0 E R. A And he is his mouth opponent is Jolie's shot. Seen a pair of right handers shot Sena's Oh, in one. With a 5.84 e R a now Malli. He went five and a third innings on Monday when he gave up one run in a win against the Pirates in all, but one of his seven starts this season, Malli is pitched at least five innings. What's crazy is he struggled at home, posting a 4.32 e R. A in three home starts. And first shot scene. We've seen him before he but he's making his first start of the 2021 season after having already made six appearances out of the bullpen for the Rockies. And in his career as a starter, he's posted a 4.3 e R A and 226 career starts. He has a 75. And 86 won loss record as a starter. Nice producer. Always appreciate his help is Jeff car and you could follow him on Twitter at J. E. F F F three efs car and he is the author of Locked on Reds podcast, and we've been talking off the air, all kinds of concerns injury concerns with the Cincinnati Reds, Of course, pitching concerns. They're already down a mirror. Garrett serving his five game suspension for inciting that on field incident against the Chicago Cups. And now Mike Moose, Takis. And Nixon's L both have healed contusions and a contusion is a bruise, and it looks like sends. L could possibly come off the bench tonight. But move stock is Is out again and man, just a tough break here with the injuries, Jeff and with his deepest this roster isn't ah, whole lot of injuries. We're going to be a problem. For the Reds, especially trying to get back to 500 remain in contention for this division that the Cardinals are seemingly starting to build a lead with you. No, no doubt, and I wrote down some notes here. Just Winker. Oh, my God. She leads the National League in hitting at 3 64, and he's got his what eight game hitting streak still intact and second in all of major League baseball behind yet her mean Mercedes of the Chicago White Sox is bad 3 74, but wink Incredible. And last night hey, show go Akiyama shots of speed. He got two hits. So did Jonathan India and Tucker Barnhart in India went deep with a 451 ft home run, which is an awesome sign for this kid. Was good to see him Go. Yard is also good to see Tyler Stevenson go, he argues. There's been some good signs from the young guys on this team, and you were talking about Jesse Winker and his amazing streak. He was on a streak of. I think it was that least 21 at bats in a row without a swing and a miss. That's exactly right. It was a least 19. I remember it. It went up from there, but that's just can you imagine? Yeah, swinging at what 20 or 21 consecutive pitches and hitting the ball every time well, and that's the thing. It's not even 21 consecutive pitches. This 21 consecutive it back at batch. Jessie Winkler can building that Batman you're talking about like 89 10 pitch it bad. There's not a picture in this league right now that once Jesse Winker to come to the plate Now we saw a U N e O swore is hit a home run last night, his seventh And of the season and then Tyler Stephenson, playing some first base after pinch hitting. I'm liking it, because the dude has power, and that's what this lineup needs right now. In the short term, he seems like a pretty good option there. The interesting thing will be if they decide to put a U. N. E O back at shortstop. I know that the fielding metric outs above average It's from baseball savant. Statcast had him as the worst and I don't just mean the worst shortstop. He was the worst fielder at minus 10 outs above average, So can he go back there and figure it out? Maybe. But does he even want to do that? At this point? That's kind of the question that everybody should be asking. He certainly looks a lot more comfortable at third base. But with Stevenson at first base, that is an interesting it kind of opens an interesting door. Because Tucker Barnhart's been hitting the ball really well this year, and he's always been and continues to be an amazing defensive catcher. Let me ask you something. They've got a team option for next year with Tucker Barnhart. You explore. Tyler Stevenson is the first baseman whenever the D H comes to the National League next year. Absolutely, Yeah, interesting. It really would be probably prolong his career a little bit, too. He's got a great back. The more I think of Tucker Barnhart. Wouldn't there be half the league wanting this guy? I would think so. I would think he would have many suitors if he became a free agent, and he's going to garner a big deal. If you can keep him for one more year under that team option team option is 7.5 million, So they're gonna have to weigh that and hopefully it's not a penny pinching situation. Because starker Barnhardt has been one of the heart and souls of this team. I know that they haven't had a ton of success. But he's one of been one of the bright spots over the last since he's been called up. No doubt his defense alone is just unbelievable and his his back. Strictly from the left side has been fantastic this year, And tonight we have the guy on the mound that really early on this season has been the stopper for the red. So I'm looking for a good night tonight. No doubt in Hey, just a reminder fans out there if you are headed to a.

"Reds are looking to snap a two game losing streak against the Rockies at Coors Field in Denver tonight after falling 13 to 8 on Thursday and 9 to 6 last night Friday. Wade Miley, who pitched a no hitter Friday a week ago was not as fortunate. Last night is he got lit up early and often. He lasted just three plus innings, yielding 11 hits and eight runs to go with three walks and five strikeouts to send his e R a 23.69. There are some big time injury concerns for the Reds, with both Nick Sand's L and might boost stock is out of the lineup with hell contusions and without further ado, and I'll mention it later in the show, but tonight's lineup Jesse Winker. In left field. Nick Castillo Janos in right, Tyler Nay Quentin Center. That's 123. And a U N e o Suarez. Third base, Tucker Barnhart, catching and Kyle Farmer at short, That's 45 and six and then the bottom third of the order. We will check the scoreboard for tonight's in today's games. And We'll give you a couple of reminders. We will dissect the Cincinnati Reds, who are looking to snap this two game losing streak. If they can win the next two, they'll keep the streak alive of not losing a Syriza's. Wouldn't that be nice? Because looking at the Rockies and the Reds dare I say they're almost identical. "Bolts and pitches and I think you would tell you the same, but you made a lot of really good pitches. Specifically with his fastball into righties into lefties. I thought going in, we really wanted to try to do that. And just because We feel like it. It makes all of his other pitches better. Yeah, and he did that He did. He made a lot of really good pitches. Just not enough of them. That's Tucker Barnhart last night talking about Luis Castillo, who couldn't get out of the fourth inning last night and look give up 10 hits If if you watched her listen to follow the game, and not every single hit that he gave up was an absolute rocket. But The home run that he gave up the kind of set the tone by Josh went is that was certainly hit hard, and a number of balls were struck pretty well. And more than anything, you just watch Luis Castillo. You see his inability to put hitters away. You see an inability to consistently work ahead. You see an inability I believe that I know Chris. Well, sure, Jeff Brantley, but but to Ah, you see an inability to put the fastball Where he wants. It all added up to a three and two thirds inning effort. Last night, 10 hits eight runs and an E R a Now of 7.71. Here we are, midway through May, the guy that we thought was least likely to be the staff ace is has pitched like anything but so far. Here in 2021. Good evening on my leg. This is sports, talking A Friday night in for Lance McAllister on 700 wlw in. It begs the biggest question of the season so far, And frankly, this question has been asked And with with each passing bad Louise Castillo outing, it becomes a louder question and a more important question. It's really kind of become two questions. If you think about it, Number one. What's wrong with Louise Castillo? We've explored whether or not there are chemistry issues between he and Tucker Barnhart well Tyler Stevenson has caught him as well. The results have been the same. Ah, Is it the selection of a certain pitches? He throwing his changeup too much? Is he not throwing his changeup? Enough? Is he throwing a slider too often? What's up with his fastball? I don't know what I do know Is this this team, which I think still does harbor postseason aspirations doesn't go anywhere. If Luis Castillo continues to be as unreliable as he's been so far this year, he has struggled at home. He has struggled on the road. He has struggled when he's given runs early. He has struggled when he has to pitch in close games because the team doesn't hit. He has struggled regardless of who the catcher is. He has struggled in all but one start so far this season. The other question is, what do you do with him? It's worth pointing out. Louise Castillo does have options. Can you imagine how jarring it would be? Who take the guy. Former All Star who was your opening day starter. And send him to Louisville. It also seems somewhat over reactionary and it does feel like that. There are some steps in between doing nothing. I'm sending him to Louisville. One of those steps is Derrick Johnson. One of the best pitching coaches and baseball. We've given you a lot of dudes like the CNO Perez and Jeff Hoffman and guys like that. Pitchers who, quite frankly, are not that central to this team Success. You've got to get Luis Castillo fixed. Luis Castillo is a cornerstone of foundational piece off this franchise. We've talked a lot over the last two years about giving Derek Johnson reclamation projects or giving him guys that used to be good, but haven't been good before, like Sonny Gray, seeing what he could squeeze if you can squeeze even more out of a guy like Trevor Bauer, seeing what he could do with guys that you know you sign on the cheap and maybe Derek Johnson can get something out of them. Condemn Eric Johnson Fix Luis Castillo If he's as good of a pitching coaches. Everybody claims the answer has to be yes. There's moving him to the bullpen. Uh, I guess I would ask fine. If if you don't want Luis Castillo toe start What else you got? There's having him skip a start. That's gonna be kind of hard to do because this team doesn't have another off day for about a week and a half. There's out writing him to Louisville. There is a lot of things that involve him not getting the ball every fifth day. But what else should God like legitimately? What what other for for a team right now. That's giving the ball to Jeff Hoffman every fifth day and has run Jose daily own out there and doesn't have Michael Lorenzen filling out a spot in the rotation. Right now, The news has been good on that front. And is cycling through in the front end of the bullpen. Ah, whole slew of guys who have been ineffective from Carson Fulmer tow the newly DF aid Sal Romano, too. The aforementioned CNL Perez. What do you got? That's better than Louise Castiel. What do you have? That's better to fill the role of a guy who's supposed to be your staff face. Mind you this. We're not trying to find somebody here to make a couple of starts and fill out the back of the rotation and occasionally pitcher Jim but usually just keep his team in games. Luis Castillo is on this team Police. Castillo is a big part of this franchise because the idea is he pitches that are high enough level that you can give him the ball and feel really damn good about your team's chances of winning. The problem now, though, is Give Louise can steal the ball and you almost expect the worst. I'm kind of a track record guy. Luis Castillo has a really good track record. I'm wary of overreacting to small sample size is this is not an apples to apples comparison, but I think of Jesse Winker. But a lot of time in this room and down the hall on ESPN 15 30 listening to people tell me how the Reds needed to move on from Jesse Winker. Right now. There are not three better hitters in baseball than Jesse Winker. By the way, Jesse Wanker prior to last year, had no real big league track record to speak of Luis Castillo does. He was great down the stretch last year. He was obviously very good in 2019. He was an all star that year. The problem is this year, the regression has been real. The other problem is I don't know what you have. That's better. I don't know what the viable alternative right now. I do know what it probably isn't and we'll get to that. Coming up. It's 705. Your phone calls are welcome. What do you do with Luis Castillo? And if the answer is send them somewhere else remove him from the rotation. What do you got? That's better. What do you got? That can replace Luis Castillo. 513749 15 30? No 513749 7000. Do that all the time. 5137491 7800 the big £1 as 700 is a free call on a TNT. Your phone calls are ahead. Malli went five innings, nine hits and six runs. But I am tonight on the pirates, right handed hitters and how well Tyler Malli affairs against right handers tonight. Coming into the game. Left handers are batting 1 23 against Malli. Right handers are hitting 3 26 against Tyler Malli. That means keep it on Maura. The bottom portion of the order for the Pirates tonight. Mitch Keller, the opposition for the Pirates, the 25 year old right handers two and three. By way of record. They earned run average 6 29, although he pitched well, his last start Went over the Padres last week. Five and two thirds innings of shutout baseball. Let's take a look at the light up tonight. There's something treat to this because it's the first post Joey Votto injury lineup. Without the D H for David Bell to use Vados injury last week officially went on the injured list when they were in Cleveland with the D H. So what does David Bell do tonight without the D H. "Sad, you're just like man I mean Paul Dougherty the, other day doc on basically said do you care Bengals season starting the worst thing that you can say is I don't care I. Think is worse I think you gotta go in with some. Degree of optimism you have. To be realistic you have to know that they're certain things that are never going to change with the franchise and. This and that but I think, as I've said you've could look at some of the potential positives and get a degree. Of optimism Lisa's how do I think it sucks especially doing. This every day if I gotta go, in, with like oh it's going to be terrible incident that. That's no good I. Can't do it it's not good. For my life seven four nine seven thousand. Eight hundred pounds seven hundred on AT and t. your thoughts on the, season coming up Sheila. Your first step what? Are you thinking my take on the Bengals I I'm going to go at thirteen and three this year thirty three. Thirteen, and thirty Andy Dalton all run run and more touchdown and he's ever had. In a season Well what was? A two thousand fifteen was the stats in front of me that was arguably his his best season he played very. Well, and, look a lot of last year, he was looking at getting killed right And so he was gun shy and look everyone knows it's no secret he's not a guy that's going to lift the rest of, the team on his shoulders and succeed in, spite of them he needs a lot of things working well and when a lot when the lines going well. Providing them time and there's a. Lot of weapons around him he can be a sufficient quarterback and I hope. That happens this year absolutely but I I. Think Marvin Lewis I think he's mingle tied Jonathan Marvin Lewis came in and it was like he was just. Bingo-type any control or his at all All right well Sheila the thirteen and three I got about Some money up I'll bet you. On that. One a Greg How. Are you, feeling, about the Bengals I feel pretty good about I mean there's you know what they showed, a lot of promise last year they make some great mood and then. We got the offensive line coach. From Dallas Greg I'm, sorry to. Interrupt, you but. The point you. Just made the offensive line coach there's people around. That team that are saying they tell me this. Was the best free agent acquisition they had. This whole forget the players. Forget cordy Glenn forget okay Billy price. That's all good but this is the most impactful off season, change this club is made and I couldn't agree more I was never a fan of. Of Alexander I thought he was he? He didn't teach the things. The mentality, I, believe that you? Need to be a great offensive. Line which, is to nasty and firing, out and coming off the ball and taking the fight He was. More of an occupy college kind of way of. Blocking and by all accounts this dude is. The real deal hopefully hopefully. It works out so your thoughts seven.
