Will Congress act on guns after Sandy Hook, Buffalo, Uvalde?
"Senate democratic chief Chuck Schumer is pushing Republicans to finally act on guns after the Texas shooting With 20 little kids dead Please damn it please think if it was your child or grandchild But Schumer notes the prospects of GOP senators shifting course in helping pass substantial laws to curb gun violence are very slim even as leader Mitch McConnell blasted the shooting It's literally sickening Alabama Republican Tommy tuberville said regulating guns won't solve anything This is a mental health issue Guns are not the problem okay People are the problem New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker says that's the problem Mines are made up It doesn't matter if more kids died This is just going to be the same thing as it was after Parkland after newtown Here nothing is changing Sagar Meghani Washington

U.S. Senate Passes $1.5 Trillion Gov't Funding Bill With Ukraine Aid
"So I want to get into a story here that broke late last night. The United States Senate has approved the $1.5 trillion spending bill that expands the power of the IRS and dramatically increases the size and scope of government last evening, but also it sends $13.6 billion to Ukraine. We're going to get into that. Now Senate Republicans voted for this 18 of them voted for it. Senator barrasso from Wyoming, Roy blunt from Missouri. Shelley Moore capito from West Virginia, Susan Collins from Maine, John cornyn from Texas, Joni Ernst from Iowa, Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, chuck grassley from Iowa. Kathy Hyde Smith from Mississippi, Mitch McConnell from Kentucky. Senator Moran from Kansas, Lisa Murkowski from Alaska, rob Portman from Ohio, senator Shelby from Alabama, John thune from South Dakota, Tommy tuberville from Alabama, a senator wicker from Mississippi and senator young from Indiana. Approved Nancy Pelosi's $1.5 trillion omnibus bill. What good are Republicans when we have Republicans doing the work of Democrats? So I want to focus on one part of this, which of course is us spending $13.6 billion to Ukraine. Now, I'm not going to get into whether or not we should send the money. I've already made my position clear on that. I'm going to ask a couple of questions about this. How about leaders thought this through? What does success look like with this sort of funding appropriation? What is an acceptable result? So a rational way of going about spending money, any person that we have here at NRB would ask the question before you spend $13.6 billion before you embark on a mission, you just have to say if it's the right or wrong thing to do, but also weigh the reality of pulling off that task. And the track record associated with the entity or the organization proposing it. So I have a question for all of our listeners that support sending money to Ukraine. Do you have trust in the CIA? Does mark milley and Lloyd Austin give you confidence? Because that's who we just funded. Does giving foreign aid to other countries give you confidence or does it give you skepticism? So just to be clear, these Republicans and a lot of people that are pushing for sending a to Ukraine. And it might be the right choice, by the way. I have said I don't believe it is. I could be corrected, but it's already

"Politics podcast. I'm scott detro-. I covered the white house. I've ever keith. i also cover the white house. And i'm dominica montenero senior political editor and correspondent. So i mean. I think it's clear what we're going to talk about today. Suddenly the pandemic seems like it is not in the rear view mirror. The delta variant is surging particularly in places with a lot of unvaccinated people and now the centers for disease control and prevention has revised its guidance. On wearing masks the agency is now recommending that fully vaccinated people wear masks in indoor public spaces if they live in areas with significant or high spread. Tam what is going on here and there are actually a lot of areas of this country with significant or high spread. And what's happening is things have changed The delta variant is now the dominant variant in the us. It is significantly more contagious than earlier. Variants and dr rachelle wolinsky. The cdc director said that they needed to make this change in guidance. Because they have new data showing that people who are vaccinated and get a breakthrough. Infection may actually be able to transmit the corona virus which they didn't think earlier When they put out that earlier guidance it's pretty big change. yeah it is and It results in a bit of whiplash. And you know the politics of it. I think are possibly more complicated than the science of it. So this is a recommendation and i think you know one of the biggest trend lines if the last year is that these recommendations have have carried a lot less weight with people over time for a wide range of reasons burnout frustration. People feeling like they don't trust the cdc or they just never get the message to begin with What are we seeing in terms of how these recommendations are turning into new local rules that people would see in their lives about about mask-wearing. Well here in the bubble that is the white house that the signs have gone back up and masks are required indoors at the white house for white house employees but out in the real world. It's not clear exactly how this is going to be applied. You've seen California bring back mask mandates you you've seen it in some other areas but it isn't widespread and immediate and In in some states they are actively saying no you can't have a mask mandate amassed mandates or a thing of the past and we're not bringing them back. You've seen republican governors basically say. Yeah no that that time in our lives is over. Domenico this is this is obviously a huge political problem for for president biden right he. He has his put so much of his political future betting on getting the pandemic under control and back to normal and that you know big football spiking july fourth events and parties of the white house and ice cream trucks around the country from the dnc and many other things. I mean it kind of looks bad. Obviously the situation has changed. The did not know variants. We're going to search the way they had but this is a huge political problem. Well i mean they can't control the delta variant and they've seen the pattern from other parts of the world Were sort of behind what's happened in other parts of the world and they've other parts of the world have had it far worse than the united states because the united states has higher vaccination rates than most other places in the world. Still in the united states Only sixty percent of the adult. Us population has been fully vaccinated. So it does have the chance to be a potential political problem for president biden. A because this has been his strength so far you know. Six months into his presidency. He gets very high marks for his handling of the current virus. Pandemic you know and it's a little iffy on some of the other issues. If this starts to slip it's an even bigger problem for him just to be honest with both of you. I think you know this. Because i've i've a moated he about this but like this is just been a particularly tough twist to to process. I mean you feel like life is almost entirely back. You feel like this is in the rear view mirror and this comes back but at the same time i feel like it's morphed into this other incredibly depressing story that defines are political times and that is just the trench political warfare identity politics viewing every single thing in the world through the prism of politics and just to wrap up the conversation on washington in particular dominica. How is this going to play out in the house of representatives where i feel like every day. Expect another fight to break out like it did in the eighteen fifties now now there's mass mandates again in the house. I mean that's not going to go over. Well no it's not and you know that's obviously a place where we see this partisan trench warfare as you call it taking place First and foremost ever-present That happening there people calling each other names not really wanting to follow guidance and in fact not following guidance in some corners of this country is actually seen as a political plus. So when you have that it makes public health very difficult. Public health is not the kind of thing that is supposed to be political. You know unfortunately over the past year and a half it has become so and like everything else just partisan and makes it that much more difficult to get something like a pandemic over with. Yeah i was talking to an infectious diseases expert today about this mass guidance and sort of the evolution on mass guidance and he said you know they they get an a for basic science and following what the science tells them but they get an incomplete. He argued for social science. And the fact is that social science is just as important in tackling a pandemic getting people to get vaccinated getting people to do take public health measures. The social science is almost more important than the basic biology. I think the country as a whole probably is getting an f. In social science at this point people want to believe what they believe first and foremost and it makes it hard. I've a lot more thoughts about that side for now tam before we take a break though there isn't important next step to come and that's what the white house does when it comes to to the powers it has to issue mandates to federal employees among other things..
GOP Senators Claim 'Unequal Justice' in Capitol Riots Compared to Protests
"Justice must be administered equally. Republican senators demand answers for 2020 riots and Capitol Hill riot from Department of Justice. Group of Republican senators sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding answers regarding punishments for those who stormed the capital in January six and those who ride it over the spring and summer 2020. So the daily caller first obtained the letter, in other words, was leaked to them. Which was sent to the Department of Justice by these senators. Ron Johnson, Ted Cruz, Tommy Tucker Field at Tuberville. Excuse me, Mike Lee and Rick Scott. The letter, the group of Republicans Why only five? Let's 123 where all the rest of the Republican senators, every damn one of them should be signing this letter. In the letter, the group of GOP senators draw parallels between the treatment of the capital riders to the treatment of riders throughout the spring and summer 2020 and call for clarifications on punishment. At the spring and summer 2020. There were nonstop protests and riots after the death of George Floyd cities were set on fire in companies in small businesses were looted across the country. Republican senators Asked, among other questions, how many people were arrested for committing crimes during the 2020 spring and summer riots in federal law enforcement used Geo location data. For defendants cell phones to track riders down how many of the rioters were released on bail? The federal law enforcement utilized Geo location data from defended cell phones to track prosecutors associated with the unrest in the spring and summer 2020. If so, how many times and for what locations and riots? How many individuals who may have committed crimes associated with protests in the spring and summer 2020 were arrested by law enforcement using pre dawn raids and SWAT teams. These are damn good questions. But you only have 10% of the Republicans who signed this letter. Where's the other 50? Excuse me 45

I think he's I think he's remarkable. Okay, We're gonna go to your phone calls in just a minute. But one of the things that they were attempting to do was to take the words of Donald Trump. On that day and previously the tweets of Donald Trump on that day in previously the lack of remorse that he showed after the event was over, Um They were attempting to show his lack of action. On that day to stop the violence when it was going on. It took him two hours to make any comment whatsoever. He did not respond to desperate calls to do something to call off the goons. On Benny of these calls came from Republican lawmakers asking the president to speak up and tell them to back off and he didn't do it. I think that's a weak argument, though. I mean, it would have been nice if he did that. But I don't know that at that point, there was a state of mind. He knew what was going on. He was watching what was going on Howard to tell them to do it doesn't mean they would listen. They were the ones committing to climbing is a matter of fact. Let's go to that, as a matter of fact. While this was going on while this this was going on, and, um, Pence was being taken out of the chamber, so they were trying to it's already been breached. People have already gone inside the violence is being perpetrated. They're on the hunt. They're looking for lawmakers. We saw the video images of the vice president being removed from the chamber. President Trump Calls Senator Tuberville He called Senator Tuberville. He's talking it Senator Tuberville on the phone, and, uh and when to River was asked about it. He said that he told the president, I said, Mr President, they just took the vice president out. I've got to go. So they have a time stamp on the call because Pence was quickly removed from the Senate chamber taken to another location with the Secret Service. He has a secret service detail and Capitol police working to secure an exit route. That means that the moment he hung up with Tuberville, he knew that his supporters were there. He knew they had entered the capital. He knew Mike Pence was in danger. He knew that they had taken him out because there was danger and the next action That he perpetrated and we know this because there's time stamps on all these things, the phone call and his tweets. He tweeted. Um, about Mike Pence and somehow, somewhere here I have what that tweet says The tweet of Mike Pence..

I'm glad you heard a fight. Yes, thank you. So I just wanted to mention to you about the interview that you spoke about earlier with the CDC and about the rise in cases of covert and self arda having to do with in Northern influx and my husband and I just looked at each other. Because we have eyewitness that for at least a month in South Florida. We live in Delray Beach and the downtown I I wouldn't want to say that one out of every four cars or three cars is from a northern state. So we have definitely been seeing that here for at least a month. And finally someone has said it. Well, that's an example of being on a cutting edge. See Europe the right place. You either had something you know, Valid David. Which is what happened in his case, or it could have been that you learned something you didn't know. Either service that we provide is extremely valuable. If you're wondering what this is about the Centers for Disease Control said that it's not in Florida and Texas and some southern other Southern states at Georgia. This increase in new cases is not now this is the CDC. And this place is not full of trumpets. Okay? The CDs, he said. It is not the fact that the States opened early. That's not why the massive number of new cases it's because a bunch of people from Florida Rather from the Northeast left over the Memorial Day weekend and came south and brought A virus with them. Now that is a profound admission, or you could say assertion. I mean, For the CDC to come out and say it's not because the states opened early. Or too early, And it's not because the states have been irresponsible in policy. It's because a bunch of people who have been infected and it's not there. They're sick now, but they tested positive. They've brought it with them. As they have come down over the Memorial day week. The vacation. I just found it was a stunning admission for the CDC to make Because the media and the Democrats are trying to blame the Santis. And camp governor in Georgia and Greg Abbott, the governor in Texas, trying to blame all these guys for irresponsibly opening the state's early to get their economies going and has not at all What had what had happened. Thanks very much. Robin. By the way, Dr Ronny Jackson. The White House doctor for Trump. He was also victorious. He ran in Texas. Last night. For a House seat. And he was victorious. Might the president over the last month or so has endorsed a couple of candidates who did not win in Colorado in North Carolina. So was the pressure on you to win. Over. Jeff Sessions. I'm a huge Donald Trump fan. I think he's done a great job with 45 people hanging. He's a quarterback. He's in the pocket. He's got people hanging out all over, but he's still completing passes. This country's in trouble. That's the reason I'm running. Now. I want to be a part of what's going to happen in the next few years. We get President Trump reelected. President Trump knows he's got to get jobs back. He's got to get people jobs. And he's doing that. He's working hard as on Air Force one with him not long ago, said Mr President. I don't know what you're taking. But I want to take it on the energy in this guy's unbelievable. Tommy Tuberville is a good guy and I more You hear him speak. I think the more confident I like him. You will be look while I have time Grab sound bite number 12. The Trump. Oval Office Rose Garden address yesterday was announced as a press conference at 5 p.m. And Trump came out at 5 30 is half hour late. The drive bys. They're sitting there and they're all got their masks on, and her socially distanced and Trump launches into a campaign type rally. Attack on on by do And he started to how great he's been on China and how wonderful he's been fighting the virus. And I said to myself, Ah, lot of people are going to be nervous about this because this is ah. Because is not what presidential press conference Zobel office addresses or foreign? I said people but rush Obama did it all the time. And Clinton did it. Yeah, I know. And it's it's still So what we've done we Assembled most of what the president said about Biden and put it in one sound bites over two minutes in this if I don't play it now, I'm not gonna have time. And here it is. This is Probably the best two minute example of what this appearance yesterday, Wass Biden in President Obama freely allowed China to pillage our factories. Plunder our communities and steal our most precious secrets. Biden's entire career has been a gift to the Chinese Communist Party. Biden supported China's entry into the World Trade Organization, one of the greatest geopolitical and economic disasters in world history. Biden was a leading advocate of the Paris climate accord, which was unbelievably expensive to our country. Would have crushed American manufacturers. America lost nearly 10,000 factories. Well, Joe Biden was vice President. Biden personally lead the effort to give China permanent most favored nation status. Biden wants to defund our military. Biden opposed Tariffs Button didn't just side with China on the virus. He called me. Xena phobic. He said that the idea that China is our competition is really bizarre. He's really bizarre, he said. China is not a problem by expressed more fawning praise about China on an ordinary Day than about America on the Fourth of July by this pushing a platform that were demolished the US economy I don't think Texas is going to do to. That means Tuberville will challenge Democrat Doug Jones in the fall, and it may be the Republican Party's best chance to take a Senate seat. NPR's Debbie Elliot has been covering the race. Good morning, Debbie. Good morning sessions used to be pretty popular in Alabama, but it looks like this will be not just the loss, but a pretty substantial one. What happened? Right more than double digits, reflecting what the Poles had indicated was goingto happen Throughout much of the campaign, you know, Tommy Taber Ville was really able to capitalize on President Trump's endorsement. Making his allegiance to trump his number one selling point. He promised that unlike Jeff Sessions, he won't let the president down when the going gets tough, you know session struggled to overcome being ousted his attorney general after he recused himself from special Prosecutor Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. Something that Trump went to great lengths to berate sessions for time and time again. He even made this robo call the night before the election in support of Tuberville. He's gonna have a cold direct line into my office that I couldn't tell you because, you know, we had the Jeff Sessions thing. We gave it a shot. I had no idea it could be as bad as it was, but he had no clue. No love lost between Trump and sessions. That's a parent sessions, though, did hold that Senate seat for 20 years before he joined the Trump administration. What's he saying this morning or last night? Right. He was certainly a fixture in Alabama politics. He was a former attorney general of the state had been a U. S attorney in Mobile. He made a somber speech from the Hampton Inn in Mobile last night. Hey 73 years old now and said he ends his political career with no regrets and his integrity intact. I was honored to serve the people of Alabama in the Senate, and I was extraordinarily proud of the accomplished that accomplishments we had as attorney general. On recusal followed the law. I did the right thing, and I say the president's bacon in the process saving his bacon, meaning he maintains that he if he had done anything to somehow squash the investigation, things would have turned out much worse, but he didn't take that tone against the president until pretty late in the campaign. Andi. I think that hurt him. He he largely ran a campaign up until the very end based on his alignment with Trump's agenda, making the case that he was all about tougher immigration laws and some of the same issues that Trump pushes long before. Trump even got into politics. Tommy Tub Orville the winner. He does not have a long history in politics. What do we know about him? Right? He is new to this game, but he generally gets the celebrity treatment anywhere. He goes in Alabama. He is the former football coach at Auburn University. Early in his coaching career. He earned this nickname the riverboat gambler for Risky play calling, But he took very few risks in this runoff campaign, especially after the vote got pushed from March until yesterday because of the Corona virus pandemic. Taber Bill had refused to debate he largely avoided the media. His ads would hit these familiar themes that resonate with conservative Republican voters here in Alabama religious freedom, border security law and order gun rights. "What's coming up with the conventions. Democrats going to Milwaukee and Obviously, Republicans have now moved to Jacksonville, Florida Bill. Welcome in, So we're still trying to, you know, we threw the confetti and streamers around here, with Coach Tommy Tuberville beating Jack positions. Quite handily. By the way. I don't know if you saw the numbers, but it was not a close 1 61% of 39%. So it'll be. Ah, yeah, Jeff Sessions backing Tommy Tuberville to take on Doug Jones and supporting the party, he said. I'm in. Let's get this done so Republicans are on their way. To another good seat in the Senate here in Alabama. Yeah, It certainly looks that way. And, ah, it's going to be interesting to see how these conventions come off this summer. Because, you know, we forget in the midst of everything. Here. J T. This was to have been the week that the Democrats gathered. In Milwaukee to formally nominate Joe Biden. Initially, it was scheduled for this week in July earlier, it was pushed back to August. And now, as it turns out, this is going to be mostly a virtual event for the Democrats. They say that all official business the setting of rules the adopting of a platform, the formal nomination will all be conducted. Remotely. In fact, they will hold two weeks of voting from August 3rd to the 15th. Ah, remote voting on on these issues, and there will be some party officials and I'm sure State Party officials Joe Biden will be there in Milwaukee in mid August. But other than that, this is going to be a virtual gathering. For the Democrats. Know what with that event in in, you know, set up that way. How will America get Teo? See all of this? Will there be? You know, we'll be just I mean, day after day of Jump online to catch this. Yeah, you know, I imagine some of it will be broadcast. However, it's certainly gonna have not. Yeah, I would think so, Especially when Joe Biden excess accept the nomination and things like that, But it certainly is going to lack the enthusiasm and it's something the Democrats frankly need. To generate enthusiasm around Joe Biden because even Democrats JD that air pulled at this point saying, Yeah, Yeah, OK, They're lukewarm on Joe Biden. So, you know And a convention is something that normally would whip up some enthusiasm. So that's going to be lacking for the Republicans. It's also going to be interesting. The RNC says they're committing committed to holding a safe convention, although now they're talking about holding some of the events in Jacksonville. Not in the arena there, but outdoors which you've been there, Florida. August thunderstorms not exactly the best place to have outdoor events. Ah, but they're planning on forging ahead with this. There are a couple of other issues as well. There's a growing list of Republican politicians who say They're not going to Ah, to the convention in Florida for one reason or another, whether it's fear of covert 19 or whatever. Ah and the other thing J T is you talk about Ah, just not being able to get it by a break here the day that President Trump is scheduled to accept the nomination formally August 27th is known as ax Handle Saturday in Jacksonville, the 60th anniversary of race riots in that city. Oh, my God. I mean, what else can 2020 throw And I know you saw this, but squirrels with the plague and colorized dots, Bionic plague? Yeah, I know. I know. We'll have more on that coming up. But, you know, Bill, I got to tell you the the Democrats, first of all with their convention. Joe Biden. And it's just like, Oh, my gosh, We've got to get him out there. He's gotta come out in front of the public again and speak. My God. Right. Stick to the teleprompter. Joe, just please pull it off for us. I mean, it's really getting embarrassing and almost, you know, frightful to think that this is the guy they're presenting out there like this, and as far as the other convention goes And both of them really unprecedented times. Normally. Yes, these conventions look like you know, the Wall Street trading for their so crammed excited. You know, this is gonna be a crazy crazy time, but Either way. There will be an announcement as to who the nominee is, and they'll have their troops around him, and you know all of that pomp circumstance, But it's going to come off like a firecracker instead of a big or the July celebration. It's just going to be Well, we hope well, I think especially the Democrats are hoping there's some type of fireworks involved. There may not be and the Republicans I mean, now, with the covert situation and Florida with all these numbers going up. I mean, that's the hotbed right now in the country that could all change. I think we're all in a fluid situation with us and you and I may be talking about. Oh, wait, not we've got new plans to talk about J T one morning, so All right. Well, I appreciate it. Thank you for the update this morning at 6 18 Alabama's morning news Coach Tuberville is moving on. Take on Doug Jones in the big Senate. Race your thoughts on this 8889105105 Come on in here. "How it it it does not value your truth as an entity itself and obviously they don't even really concern himself about humanity the whole world is suffering as a result on Wall what they did general sessions couple quick political questions if you win the primary and that the run off and then the general can you work with president trump with him you've had your obvious arguments absolutely I mean president trump's been strong on China we talked about it during the campaign I don't really yeah I would love to work with him on that and because the immigration on trade although the huge issues that allow the Republicans have been dragging their feet on and not being sufficiently supportive of the president I'll be is ally I'll be at that because I think I will be able to work together nicely do you expect him to endorse either you or your opponent coach Tuberville repeat that do you expect him to endorse either you or the coach he did he endorsed our our our coach solvable yeah he did and so what do you make of the lay of the land we got a minute here right up to the July runoff how's it look to you well we feel good about it I think people begin to realize that you need a senator who and I hit the ground in the Senate knows what's going on can get things done he has not sold out to the establishment of our own special interest on big money but is always been loyal to the values of Alabamians that's what I've done people are I feel I really feel good about where where the momentum is heading in this campaign we intend to win this race and be able to continue to advance as I have in the past with our integrity.
