"It's hard debris and a time when this is what Donald Trump was best known for his reality show the apprentice but the New York Times chief television critic says is exactly what we we need to think about in order to understand donald trump how it shaped his for the American public long before or coming to the presidency at how he continues to do so today. James Pun was had new kids or EMC ONE DONALD TRUMP television and fracturing America. I spoke with him Tuesday morning James. I want to go back to when trump is elected in in two thousand sixteen there is this passing reference to his television career and I gathered it really baffles you yeah when trump was running but particularly after he was elected you know because this was sir shock to a lot of the pundit class and arguably even to trump's own campaign and and his opposition but we started seeing all these explainers cleaners you know how do we get from How did this momentous moment happen and I would see him disgust as you know a political demagogue populist a Manhattan Real Estate Mogul description was used very often and certainly his career as a TV star was mentioned but it was generally treated as you know sort of you know ancillary it was it was it was it was a secondary thing that evolved out of those other pursuits as somebody who has written about and covered Donald Trump as as an author and a TV figure for a couple of decades now and has known him as a popular culture figure for a couple of decades before that to me that that was entirely backwards. Donald Trump was always first and foremost a celebrity who sought to be a celebrity who cultivated and and sought out a presence in the media and became a TV and talk show Cetera et Cetera figure and then learn because he realized quite accurately that in a media culture one can leverage that celebrity into other fields. What's the business be licensing your name as a brand to other people to develop things be it television stardom be Fox News stardom and and ultimately of course as we saw into politics you know to me a TV wasn't an interesting sidelight of Donald Trump success. It was the entire point of him and I didn't see anybody really delving into that with a deep understanding of the medium and and what did you think it is that makes trump so well suited for television. He likes conflict. His personality is about aggression. He has a sense of what the camera wants which is sensation which is a show. He knows that a television Russian camera is this sort of hungry beast that always want something spicier than the last thing that you fed it and we've seen that demonstrated in in stage after stage of his career going back to the nineteen eighties when he had the perfect timing to be coming up as sort of this swaggering braggadocious emblem of the repay ships money hungry Reagan era going through his heyday on NBC and on the Apprentice and certainly going into the two thousand sixteen presidential campaign where much of his success owed to the fact that he knew how to keep camera on and when you do that you make yourself the protagonist of the election and that helps you control it's story you know it so so interesting. Even the faces he makes when is on television seem to somehow grab that much more attention yeah you know that's that's why he lends himself so well to gifts and little memes on Social Media you know many of which were made out of the faces that he would poll during the debates. He is very conscious of his presentation. He is very much camera aware a great story story that I came across while I was doing the various research for the book was that when he was running for President what he would do at an interview with a news outlet Atlit he would ask them to play back sound off so that he could see how he would look to somebody who you know just had the TV on but wasn't doesn't necessarily paying attention to the sound that was coming out of it because that picture you present within those those four corners that is you know ninety ninety five percent of who are in today's media sphere but James Take us back to August twenty one nineteen an eighty and trump's television appearance on that day. I was a simpler time. We were we were. We were so much more innocent. That was the day that Donald Trump first appeared on national television on the today show with Tom. Brokaw take a look at my next guest. There's a report Puerto Around Wall Street that this is what he has in mind. This is Donald Trump thirty three years old and as I say in the book that was when quote Unquote Donald Trump the TV character essentially was born the multimedia performance that that he would inhabit for years afterwards and broke out wanted to talk to him that day about his plans for trump tower and those were being written up around the time in the New York City tabloids where Donald Trump had made himself a fixture. This was the first sign of his you know talent for feeding the media beast you get attention in the tabloids that gets you on TV you get on national TV. Suddenly you're national presence in all these people's homes and and broke out was asking him about trump tower building the plans. There were some controversies around it. They destroyed some art deco freezes on the old Bangalore Taller buildings that replaced place to the consternation of New York preservationists the thing that I found interesting about this if I can detail it. A little bit is that on the one hand in the broad strokes. It's it's very much the Donald Trump character that we've seen on television for decades after swaggering confidence you know little cocky but in in sort of in entertaining kind of devil-may-care way but it's also much more soft-spoken much more calming homing reassuring trying to sort of defuse controversies rather than court them. Mr Trump was left in your life your thirty three years old. You're worth all this money you say you didn't. I'd say that you want to be worth a billion now. I really don't I just want to keep busy and keep active and be interested in what I do and that's all there is to life as far as I'm concerned. I really am not looking to make tremendous amounts of money. I'm looking to enjoy my life and if that happens to go with it that's fabulous and part of the argument of my book is that that's important not just has to show how donald trump kind of changed his presentation changed over the years that is big part of how media changed over the years that was the way you would present yourself on television back then because the kind of television you had in nineteen eighty in the mid twentieth century was the three network medium medium monoculture where tens of millions of people watch the same thing and you had to present something that was broadly palatable and part of the story of how we got from there to here. It's not just the story of you know. Donald Trump's life in the media but it's the story of how media itself has changed from that today when we have thousands of cable channels thousands of social media feeds leads you know millions of social media feeds all these media created niche markets and bubbles which create a more polarized audience since and in many forms in many different genres allow for more polarizing characters to emerge develop followings and Donald Trump we see kind of evolved evolved with that media the question I have is did he evolved naturally by his own instincts or did he have some coaching did he simply have a sensibility of where the idiom was going. I think it was more instinctual than than coaching. I mean Donald Trump has always tended to be his own media coach and his own media handler. I mean going back to the nineteen eighteen eighties when he famously liked to get on the phone with the reporters and say that he was John Barren press spokesman for Donald trump to today when he basically his his the big part of his job is he's basically his own press secretary. His press secretary doesn't give press briefings anymore but Donald Trump jawbones with reporters on the White House lawn. Ah instead so you know I think it was more having an intuition for how people become celebrities and and what the camera wants and when I say that he did that. I want to be clear number one. I'm not interested in Servino psychology ising who you know the real real deep down. Donald trump is because I honestly feel that in somebody who is such a public figure that media performances by far the most important thing about him but number two. I don't suggest that there was a master plan then he sat down at some point in the nineteen seventies and sketched out his his his his path through New York real estate to prime time TV to the White House but I think he knew on a gut level what TV wanted and TV is very much a gut medium. Yeah something else happened back there. In nineteen eighty the movie caddyshack and in it is a character in the you said he perfectly illustrates don trump this is Rodney.

"Weather, you need from Alexa, just say Alexa, play eleven ninety on iheartradio. So the New York Times just started to report. Now that the, the word is the reason why the strike was called off is because Donald Trump was notified that maybe one hundred and fifty people could be killed in this strike as high as one hundred fifty and he didn't feel that was equal to a drone. He felt that was too high of a price, which kinda again, hurts the left's warmonger kind of story, but everything, hurts the left's warmonger story on this most importantly, Donald Trump's long lifetime record against the stabilizing the Middle East. It is my contention also that, that is something that the Pentagon has been against for a very long time. Don't go into Iran. Don't go into Iran. It's why said in two thousand four the real target was not Saddam Hussein the real target was the regime in Iran. We. We know who ran is in the idea was to put freedom on both sides. It didn't work but to put freedom on both sides, and then squeeze Iran from both sides, and be able to pop the head of that snake, because you do not want to go in and have a war. So. What's really happening? I think that's what's happening. I think the president is just trying to send the message to Iran. I'll go to war, but I really don't want to stop this right now. We brought Pat gray in get his opinion. And also love to hear some commentary from stew on this as well. Yes. I I'm kind of fascinating as you guys mentioned at the beginning of the hour that we're hearing about this now that I can't recall a time where. And maybe there has been one, but I can't remember a time where the next day we heard it was going to be a strike yesterday. But they called it off. And so no, no. It wasn't. It was it was last night. Yeah, yeah. It was almost immediate. Crazy. Strangely. I mean, there's so many open questions. I think with it, I mean, it does definitely to me feel like a direct administration leak to say, hey, this is exactly this is what they want Iran to here, which is we're you are this close to this line. Don't keep crossing our president happens to be the guy who just is giving you a break here. But you better not keep crossing these lines. And I think that is kind of the foundation of this. But it's, it's interesting, I think to and that, you know, there's this sort of two sides of Trump and that like Trump, obviously wants to portray strength. He you know, he wants to he would many things he gives the tough talk. He is a guy who wants to show you that he's in control. And if he has to hill wiped off the map at same time, you're right. You know, in most conflicts going back as long as Trump has been in the public eye. He's been on the side of not doing them. Right. I mean in almost every circumstance, very, very briefly at the beginning of Iraq, he supported it, but then turn very quickly to one of the biggest critics of Iraq. He no. Livia even that one. He said, no, I and then he said, yes. Are you talking about when when he was on what he was on stern first interview he did about four and he said, initially that he supported it? But then it wasn't for it. Actually can't remember if he was a he was against it, then for it, then against it again, he does not like these things. You know, it's one of the nukes, doesn't it's one of the ways he sort of breaks with the orthodoxy of the Republican party over the past thirty and forty years. And it's one of the things he's not changed. I mean he he has been consistent over that. You know, we talked about tariffs all the time, Donald Trump loves to threaten tariffs any loves implementing tariffs. It's not like that he loves threatening war, but he does not like implementing it at all. I mean he does not run to do this. I think that's a really good case his whole life. He has been for tariffs. So, you know, he can say, look. I'm just threatening. I'm just using bargaining chip. I'm not so sure he I'm not so sure we would see the end of these tariffs until the next president in two thousand twenty four because the president does believe in tariffs. You're exactly right. He does not believe in war. He doesn't like it. He's the opposite of walk. Softly and carry a big stick. He's carry a big stick, and walk in. Install your way into the room, make sure everybody knows you're there, but his history, if you look at Donald Trump, and my favorite example of Donald Trump is how he got the Trump Tower built on Fifth Avenue. And every time I tell this story people are like I had no idea Donald Trump, if you want to understand how he negotiates and what's happening with Iran right now is he went to his architects, he knew that the airspace of the building that he just bought on Fifth Avenue. He only had like, three or five stories, and the airspace was owned by either, Cartier, Tiffany, I think it was Tiffany. And, and they owned over his building all of the airspace. So you not only have to buy land in New York, you have to buy the air above the land to be able to put a skyscraper up. Well, he wanted to put one up and everybody said, we'll Tiffany won't allow it. They don't want that. And he said, okay. And he talked to his architects, and he said, I want you to drop two buildings. I want you to drop the most beautiful luxuriance goldfield building anybody's ever seen. Then I want you to draw up another building the ugliest monstrosity in four stories you could ever possibly imagine. So he walks into a meeting with Tiffany's, and he rolls out the beautiful luxurious right here on Fifth Avenue. It's going to be a beacon for the world that Trump Tower and Tiffany's listened to him and said, yeah, we're not doing that. You know we own the airspace. That's why I'm here. But I think you're going to be reasonable because this is a beautiful luxuries. It's going to be a beacon for the whole world. Okay. Tiffany wasn't moved by that argument. He said right before we left. Okay. I tell you what, if you don't sell that to me. What I'm gonna do is I'm going to build this building. And he rolls out this ugly monstrosity, and he looks at them in the eye and says, and I mean, it don't tempt me. I'll do it. I want to do it. Please make me do it. And what happened by the time he got back to the office. They had called and said, okay, build your big huge tower. That's how Donald Trump negotiates. He never actually has to go to war. He negotiates in a way like you don't want to do it. But I do I really wanna do it. Please make me do it. Oh, I'm crazy. I'll spend billions just to just build on straw city out to it. I wanted to it. I wanna bomb you around. I want to I want to, oh, the Pentagon is begging me to do it. I want to do it domain make. Me do it. But I'll do it. Think about doing it right now. I might do it. I might have before we get back to the White House, please. I wanted to into make me too. It would it be a beautiful your. I think it would I think if you as a beautiful jurist bombing. Listen to listen to what he's actually saying. Join the nation's joined a world come to the family of nations. Look, this is going to be wonderful. We'll all live together and you'll be able to sell your oil, and we'll be fine in it'll be wonderful. It's a big beautiful thing, and we'll be known as the big beautiful peacemakers for all time to come. I want I want that. But sometimes I want a bomb you more than that. And I think that's an effective strategy in most circumstances. Right. I mean as long as people believe that you're twitchy enough to actually follow through your, you know it works. You know, they respond to. Yeah. In the Middle East. That's what this scene to understand those spun to. Yes, they don't understand peacemaker. No. They think that's a sign of weakness. This is pretty well publicized here. Here's a guy who's already pulled out of the Iran deal. Right. Like Bronco Bama crafted the Iran deal, they already know this guy is twitchy testing like this. It is amazing to me, like, for example, like this, this drone, which is one hundred and thirty million dollars in cost that we lost one hundred thirty million dollar drone was specifically designed to be able to avoid surface to air missiles, so how exactly is Iran? Have the technology. To be able to knock one of these things out of the sky. It's a really interesting open question Russia. Yeah. I mean is there technology more impressive than we think? And, you know, look, I. I want to do it. I want to. Let me push the tell me not to push the button. I want to push the button. We should spend time on this next week on that, like, you know, the, the idea of war with Iran is not the idea of war with a few missiles into Syria. It's not a few missiles into Libya. It's not it's not even a rock, like this is this is a this is the us, but it's a relatively advanced military that could give serious problems. I don't even think that I'm, I'm I, I agree with you. But that's not what concerns me what concerns me most is the, the power of the terrorist network that Iran has that they would employ all throughout Europe, the power that they have in the in the in the straight to be able to really dramatically shift the resources, and to stop resources from going into our allies of oil. And the biggest thing is they have an ally and that allies big Russian bear who also want to destroy, but I love him. A love him. He's great. But I'd like to. Destroy. Please. Let me destroy. It is. I believe that Iran could be the key to the next global war that Iran could be the one that, that is the house that you have to topple over. And then we go into World War, three I do know that scripture's tell us that when the bear, and the an Iran. Sign a treaty together, which they already have and become allies, that, that, that is that is the Armageddon. The team that's Gog and may Gog. I say we stay away from Gog and Magog. I'd like to stay away from that one. I think that's not a good thing. I think that's not a good thing. But then again. Kinda like I'd like to see him come together. It's like the gate keeper. And the key master. Oh, yeah. Make me let them come together. All right. Thanks..

Trip. But you scare me. Oh, come on. Now. You know, why do I scare you, Mike? Nice avail Trump. Well, either they're nice things to say about any lies all the time, and whatever, but you know. Media. What about the media will like what walking into what it was the media that said that that he had the largest inauguration was that the media that said that who said the the the Trump that was the media that said that Trump's changed my mind, and then he said I'm going to close the border though. I said, no, I never said that was that the media that said that the problem with the media is that they record it. Anyway. Whatever they don't record themselves. But he I think my opinion one Trump is he does the best that he can doing the job. He was elected to do. But one of the problem is is the other previous administrations, and it's not a democratic or Republican previous ministration do that that that was so bad compared to him. You mean like like w George W Bush getting into Iraq and Afghanistan was at the one is that the one that that that was so bad. It was. Hussein. No, no, no, no, no, no, Saddam Hussein did not have weapons of mass destruction describe it to destruction. Got rid of them. That's a good line. They were there. Just just before the Americans came in that he got rid of them. Anyway. I don't wanna revisit George W Bush. I don't want to revisit Obama. The reality is, you know, the issue today is Trump. Then the crap he's getting why would I ever released? My tax returns. Wendy IRS is keeping the under perpetual, the MAC the matter is that that why would he do it because he has something to hide. Democrats like not doing it. Because they're not making me. I I would imagine her her tax returns are public. I have no doubt that they are. I have absolutely no doubt that they're they're public. Just like they were for a bomb. Just like they were for Clinton. That's the only person who is not releasing his tax return is is Donald Trump. Now, my question is why and I said to one the other callers tonight that I hope there's absolutely nothing in there. But he's made some policy decisions that have been favorable to the Russians. He's made some positive visions that have been been favorable to to to particular the Russians and how well he wanted right? When Obama had before Obama left he put in these very restrictive sanctions. And Trump said that would when I came into office. His first thing was to lift some of those sanctions, even now he has the only reason sanctions were put back on is because congress pushed him to it. So. And as been made very clear that during the election. He was negotiating to to have a Trump Tower built in Moscow. Nation the nation. He made a lot of stuff that Russia was doing very hard for them to continue to get away with only because NATO and others have pushed him into. The fact the matter is if he had it himself. He even said he took a Putin's word over his own intelligence people in regarding the Russian meddling in the election. Then he is part of the deal that's part of the deal. That's basically it. He's he's siding with with Putin relatives compared to his own intelligence people. Why? And that's my only question is why and maybe tax return show a reason for it. Let's make them public and find out if it's nothing, and I truly hope there isn't anything there. But let's find out. Let's try you can't take his word for it. Well, you also can't take the fact that the wall has been left an ice against him. And. What what's what laws against him? Well, start with the same people investigating him giving Hillary a break come on. You gave the IRS gave Hillary a break you mean with with with Komi announcing nine days before the election that he's reopening an investigation her that's a break for Clinton. I think that was a political ploy a political ploy by by to- Komi to get Trump elected. It had been. Try to be a foil. So that Hillary gets all come on come on. He knew he knew that that was going to have a detrimental effect on Clinton's possibly being elected. He he stays that statement very clear anyway, Mike, pre shut the call. But I, you know, it's not just just Trump minute tax returns. All want to know is what's in there. Let the MAC Merican people make judgment, anyway, let's change gears. We got about a few minutes. Let's go to to Jefferson in. He's waiting fourteen minutes. Jeff in Glen Burnie. Welcome to show. Jeff. Professor. How are you? Beverly Evan talked to, you know, while I've been actually I've been I've been out of commission for the last six weeks. I have my knee replaced. So what's happened over the past couple months? Yeah. A lot. Well, the drought in California being over. It's that. Yeah. This certainly, I'm guessing. NBC haven't been ho curly have. No, it doesn't actually. "Great to have you as the weekend with joepags things Lavrov stopping by. I wonder what you think. The alleged collusion is I really do. I wonder what you think the alleged collusion is. Does again people think that well with the collusion was Donald Trump and his sons and the whole family they were trying to get at Trump Tower built in Russia. And so therefore they colluded with Putin to get president did to get Donald Trump the presidency Steeler for Hillary Clinton. Just we could line his pockets with money. Wrong answer. That's not what the allegations are matter. Matter what the left says, no matter what these politicians say, no matter what the media says that's never been the question. Those at about it was about emails. And now somehow. Donald Trump and his family colluded with Russia to get to hack, the emails of the DNC and hack Hillary Clinton's emails or John Podesta's emails, get them do Julian Assange zones, Julian Assange over at WikiLeaks and have him leak them because that would would cause Hillary Clinton to lose. So let's break down a couple of angles of that. Now, that's what I said is verifiably true. That's what the alleged Russia collusion is. So let's break it down. Is there any proof whatsoever? On any level by anybody that one person who was gonna vote for Hillary Clinton? Switch that vote to Donald Trump in two thousand sixteen because of emails is there any even Bronco about. Oh, you know that one vote was was changed. Vari-? So the election was above reproach. Now one vote changed by any interference. According to former President Barack Obama. Not one person has ever made a case for how votes were changed or screwed with. One person. With the allegation of Russia collusion is that the emails were so bad that people who were staunch Democrats, staunch progressives and staunch pro Hillary people actually voted for Donald Trump because of the emails. There is nothing whatsoever anywhere in the mainstream. That would suggest how that happened or that actually did happen. Now, one person says that's viable now. One person says even a vote was changed because of the emails being released. So that's alive for the beginning. Just a flat out lie that there was some sort of vote changing or Hillary Clinton did worse because of the horrible collusion between Russia and Donald Trump. So what does this whole thing about Trump told a foreign power to hack an American citizens emails? I can't remember if it was NATO might have been might have been something else. But the president standing there and somebody's asking him about the about the emails. The Russia has the emails and his answer was why hope so I'd like to see him. Would you like to see him three three thousand missing emails? Does that sound like he says, I hope Russia goes in hacks them 'cause I'd like to have them hack them. Sweat can release them and hurt Hillary Clinton. No. They asked if he thinks Russia has them he says, I hope so because I'd like to see them. He doesn't tell any foreign power to hack any any emails of an American citizen that just didn't happen. It's untrue. It's like whole Charlottesville thing. He didn't say, you know, white supremacists. Are very fine people. He didn't say that. What he said was they're very fine. People on both sides, the very bad people on both sides. And he was talking about both sides of the argument about whether you take down confederate memorabilia and an historical statues. Never wants to President Donald Trump say they're very fine. White people who are the white supremacists. The very fine people in those white supremacist people. But that's what's being reported. That's a stupid. It is. So when it comes to this investigation, and why it was started. It was started by James Comey. The the former FBI director because he dared have the president dared have dinner with Komi allegedly asked him for his loyalty. How horrible is it that a boss would say hair you loyal to the cause here? You loyal to what we're doing the executive. Kobe's answer was no he should've said, no with his big six foot eight Weasley s said Martin is other Weasley ass. I don't know. That's fine. I just wondered. The president asks Jim Komi to have dinner with them Kobe's accepts. But he's scared in these nervous. He's the leader of the FBI. He's scared and nervous over dinner. It might be prime rib or something crazy. They have the dinner the president allegedly asked for his loyalty, president says he didn't. But I could I could see him say in it. And then as they're leaving the dinner, and he's very comfortably. Shaken his bocce. No six foot eight little baby. And the president says, hey, can you see your way to to to drop this Flint thing? General Flynn's a good man Kobe's response because he was scared. The deputy couldn't believe with this was saying. Covy says he is a good, man. And then, of course, continue the investigation continued the prosecution general Flynn lost his house just about all his money losses rank, and he's probably going to prison. So the president didn't make the investigation stop, which by the way is well within his rights as the leader of the executive. He's the boss. He's the boss. Of the department of Justice. Therefore, he's the boss of the FBI. He could have said, hey, glad we had dinner dropped the case against.

"Well Anderson I can't get into the specifics of what has been discussed. Now, the two days in which Michael Cohen has testified before my committee. But remember that statement that is in question. Here the statement that was used by the special counsel to get Michael Cohen to plead guilty to lying to my committee was a deep and rich statement with all sorts of dates, and and and and people and mentions, and of course, at the time as you know, Michael Cohen was part of a joint defense agreement. Right. And so it's not crazy to infer that a lot of people would have looked at that statement. But obviously Michael Cohen when he gave that statement to the congress. He knew that that was incorrect. So any of the president's attorneys who reviewed Cohen statement, do you or does your committee plan on calling them to testify? Well, at least chairman said today, it was very productive day. And I know this is frustrating, but we wanna keep. You can't say this subject as private who can partly because by the way, as a result of today's testimony the committee may very well. Call in additional people, and if we call an additional people we don't necessarily want them knowing exactly what it was that Michael Cohen said so when the chairman said it was a productive day. I think it's I think what he meant. And I think what is fair to say is that we learn new things Michael Cohen said today that he brought new documents the German confirmed that we saw new documents that pertained to to when Michael Cohen told the committee the Trump Tower building had stopped being the project had stopped. So we did see a lot of new information as a result of that new information, we may very well. Call additional witnesses. What do you have a sense of what the timetable of the investigation for the committee is I mean, the plan to wrap this up in a matter of months or weeks or longer? Well, remember, we started when we regain the majority of the Democrats regained the majority, we restarted the. Investigation, which then chairman Nunez had ended prematurely..

"All things considered from NPR news. I'm Ari Shapiro, and Mary Louise Kelley it is now five weeks since opposition leader one Guido declared himself, the rightful president of Venezuela. Also five weeks since the US declared its support of Guido. The Trump administration has imposed sanctions targeting Venezuela's oil sales as part of the effort to oust president nNcholas Maduro. And yet Madero remains firmly installed in the Palacio de Miraflores that's Venezuela's equivalent of the White House, which prompts the question is US policy working let's put that to Elliot Abrams. Here's the US special envoy for Venezuela. And he joins us now from the State Department. Welcome. Thank you. Glad to be doing this is. So you have testified before congress that you are confident nNcholas Maduro will go, but that it could take awhile. So my first question is how long how long you willing to give it? Well, we're willing to give it whatever amount of time. It takes because this is not primarily in American question. This is a question of the Venezuelan people wanting a democracy wanting to get rid of corrupt dictatorship. But are you are you thinking about this in terms of days weeks months? No, I mean, you know, when searching unveil asked me to do this. You did not say why don't you come on instead of three weeks, and then we'll be done with this. We will support the Venezuelan people for as long as it takes the question. Mark is how much staying power Madero has. And I wanna let you respond to a comment from someone who unlike the rest of us actually sat down and interviewed him at length this week. This is where he Rama's the university on journalists who interviewed him and was briefly detained at that presidential palace. Then expelled from Venezuela on Tuesday. We caught him NPR caught him as he was flying out and asked is there any sign Madero is backing down that he's ready to leave office. Here's what Roma's told us not at all. He feels very powerful at this point in my conversations with some members of the government. They tell you that they have been underestimated they think that they'll stay in power. And the only problem for them, the real only problem for them would be a US invasion, Elliot Abrams that word underestimated are you underestimating Nicolas Madura. I don't think we're underestimating him or the regime. They do have a certain small amount of farm support from Russia and China saw on the United Nations Security council you were trying to get a resolution through at the UN this weekend and weren't able to get through. Well, we did get nine votes which meant that the Russians and Chinese had veto, whereas the Russian resolution got four votes, which was actually pathetic. And that's a measure the. Support in the international community for quite Dolly for democracy in Venezuela. We are not underestimating the regime, but I would say to you that frequently regimes look solidly in power until the day comes when that whole edifice crumbles, and it will come in Venezuela to another point that Jose Ramos made which is his sense from his interview in Venezuela. Was that the the real thing that concerns them as a US invasion? President Trump has said that is on the table some form of military intervention. How on the table is it? I mean is the US seriously planning for some sort of military action in Venezuela. The policy of the United States toward Venezuela. I think is very clear to us diplomatic and economic political pressure to try to see how much international support we can get and fifty four countries have recognized one Widodo already. I think really every president says should say all options are on the table. And they always are. But that is not the path we are pursuing. So if I'm hearing you correctly, you're saying military intervention is of course, an option it's on the table. But it would be a tool of last resort. That's correct. So what would it take to trigger that let me just say? The talk about military action does not come from Washington. It comes from the regime in Venezuela. It comes from Moscow. It comes from people who are trying to diminish support for democracy in Venezuela. Now, you asked what would it take the, you know, we don't get into hypothetic like that. When we're thing that raised my curiosity before we move on John Bolton, the national security advisor was spotted at a news conference last month. And he had the words five thousand troops to Colombia written on his notepad. It was clearly visible. It was photographed. Yes. Is there a question there? Why is John Bolton writing about five thousand troops to Colombia? If this is not seriously on the table. You know, I I'm not gonna speak for my friend John Bolton, I'm not going to speak for his yellow pad. I have described the policy of the United States, which is to pursue all of these various forms of international pressure on the regime in supportive of Venezuelan people and their struggle for democracy on a personal note. I want to invite you to respond to concerns raised about you. Specifically in this on voyeur all given your role in the Iran contra affair in the eighties and support of Central American governments than that were committing human rights abuses. You've got baggage in this region. You know in the Reagan administration came to power virtually every country in Latin America was a military dictatorship. Costa Rica was not and ironically enough fan as well. It was not when we left office in January nineteen ninety nine there had been a number of transitions. I think record we compiled in supporting democracy and to change for military dictatorship to democracy around the world. But particularly in Latin America is an exceptional one. And I think anybody in the Reagan administration participated in that effort should be proud of it. I know I am. But does your background provide an excuse for people now to be suspicious about US, motives and Venezuela? I don't think that anyone who looks at American policy could seriously doubt that we are supporting democracy in Venezuela. Elliott abrams. Thank you. You're welcome Elliot. Abrams is the Trump administration special envoy four Venezuela. Speaking to us from the State Department. Michael Collins testimony on Capitol Hill this week was revelatory at it gave Democrats are roadmap to broaden their investigation into President Trump, can you suggest who else this committee should talk to for additional information. Who else knows that the president's at the Clinton? Where would we find business records that explain the president's relationship to the convicted Russian mobster Felix sater's? As many names as you can President Trump's former lawyer and fix her did not disappoint. Allen Weisselberg, Ron Liebman and Matthew Kalomo, David pecker Toan Howard LeVine of AM is was miserable. No, what is miss Ronas? Rhona Graff is the Mr. Trump's executive assistant. We're going to dig into the stories behind some of those names now with NPR Justice reporter Ryan Lucas. Hi, Ryan, either the of the name that came up more than twenty times in Collins public hearing somebody who we know is going to testify before congress Allen Weisselberg who is he. Well, he is the chief financial officer for the Trump organization. He actually started off working for Trump's father back in the nineteen seventies been around for a long time one of the highest place people in organising, he's been described as Trump's money man, somebody involved in basically every financial decision including Cohen says in that now infamous one hundred thirty thousand dollars hush money payment made to stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about an alleged affair with Trump and Cohen told lawmaker. How that payment went down? I had gone into Mr. Trump's office is I did have to each and every conversation. And he had told me that he had spoken to a couple of friends one hundred thirty thousand it's not a lot of money, and we should just do it. So go ahead and do it. And I was at the time with Alan Weisselberg where he directed us to go back to Mr. Weisselberg office and figure this all out now Weisselberg signature actually appears on one of the checks that Cohen presented house investigators as evidence this week. Now Weisselberg has spoken about this payment with prosecutors in New York as part of their investigation into Cohen, and he was granted immunity in that pro. And of course, that payment is one of the reasons that count is going to prison now yesterday, I asked a member of the house intelligence committee, democrat Eric swallow. Well, what he wants to ask why Solberg about and he named a lot of issues connected to Russia from Trump Tower Moscow to other Trump family cash flows in and out of Russia. Congressman swallow told me his big question related to Weisselberg is whether the president is financially compromised by Russians is that the heart of it here. We'll all of those issues are on the table. But there are also. So domestic financial questions for Weisselberg involving a Trump's taxes. Trump allegedly inflating the value of assets, including to an insurance company, and then efforts to suppress stories about Trump's alleged misdeeds like extramarital affairs, and those are operations notice catch and kill. Okay. That brings us to two other names that came up several times in Coen's testimony, David pecker and Dylan Howard both worked for American media Inc. The parent company of National Enquirer, which was involved in those catch and kill stories. Right. Pecker is the head of AM. I he and Trump our friends going back years and years. Dylan Howard is the VP the chief content officer at the company Cohen confirmed in his testimony that Packer and Trump had a long standing agreement Packer would contact Trump or his people about a negative story involving Trump, and then am I would buy the rights to it with zero intention of ever publishing it now like Weisselberg am I struck immunity deal with federal prosecutors in New York? As part of the coin investigation. Okay. There were gasps in the newsroom yesterday. When the chairman of the house intelligence committee said his panel is going to have a public hearing this month with Felix sater's reminded us who that is people would gasp about a hearing with them. There are a lot of colorful characters in the in the in the cast of Trump world Seder may very well be the most colorful of all his in his fifties now, but he was born in the Soviet Union came to the US as a kid grew up in Brooklyn started off his career on Wall Street, and then things took an unexpected turn here. He is describing that to NBC's Chris Hayes metaverse successful career on Wall Street is the young man, unfortunately, one night in a drunken, Barbara all. One guy went for a beer bottle. I went for Margarita glass, and that changed the trajectory of my life Sator served a year in jail for slashing the man's face with that Margarita glass when Seder got out of jail. He got involved in a stock and money laundering scheme that had links to the mafia. He pleaded guilty to racketeering one thousand nine hundred ninety eight he Kwok rated with investigators in around that time the details of his life. Get a little fuzzy, for example, he has said that he worked as an informant for the US government, including American intelligence agencies fast forward. Several years Seder finds himself in the real estate business with Trump, and it was Seder who worked closely with Cohen on trying to get at Trump Tower built in Moscow, Brian we didn't even have time to talk about the president's children vodka. Don, jR, Eric the son-in-law Jared Kushner, but suffice to say they're on the list to absolutely NPR Justice reporter Ryan Lucas. Thank you. Thank you. "Tears for fears. This is democracy now democracy now dot or the Warren peace report, I'm Amy Goodman. We're broadcasting for the week from the Sundance film festival here in Park City, Utah as we continue to look at the new documentary. Where's my ROY Colin it looks at the man who mentor, Donald Trump and Roger stone? The film just premiered here at the Sundance film festival after ROY calling left Washington in disgrace in the nineteen fifties. It became a prominent attorney in New York. A prominent mob. Attorney his clients included the mob and the future precedent. Let's go back to my interview with director about Karen, our let's leap forward to. His relationship with Donald Trump how he came to know Donald Trump. So Cohn has an immediate success is a lawyer New York and people have said to me journalists have asked me how could someone so discredited worm his way to the top echelons of New York society after having crashed and burned so badly and humiliated himself and everyone around him in the McCarthy McCarthy period, my answer is have you ever met New York society. It's the most transactional place in the world and ROY Cohn was the king of transactional relationships. I call him the CEO the favor Bank, and that's the way he operated and to great success all through the sixty s all through the early seventies. And there comes a day a fateful day when ROY Cohn powerbroker mob lawyer meets a young man who was the just starting. Out son of a major real estate developer in queens, and Brooklyn, and Donald J Trump Trump was pure outer borough material the had the money, but he didn't have the status he was considered to be very uncouth and was not welcome in the important places in New York City business in society, but he had a burning aspiration to rise to those levels. He did find his way to a Sheik nightclub at that time called LA club on midtown east in Manhattan which existed until relatively recently. In fact, in that kind of swinging proto disco environment he meets the famous war Cohn at that precise moment, the Justice department was going after Trump's father and Trump himself who was a junior partner in the Trump family real estate business for racial discrimination. At the time. It was very provable that the Trump housing company was taking the rental applications of minority applicants and marking them with a code word, which was C for colored and then denying them rental apartments. The Justice department was going to come down very hard on them. And Trump was worried and wanted to help his father and help himself out of this nasty predicament. He explained the predicament ROY Cohn night and said, hey, can you help me get out of this and cone said absolutely come see me tomorrow morning. Trump did and cone in the room with him outlined a strategy for conquering this Justice department suit against them, which really was the game plan. The Trump followed every day for the rest of his life and into our own law in our daily lives now fully provable that they were engaging in racist practices. But they never admitted it that's. All right. So they settled. Settling is not technically an admission of guilt. Now, Trump says he never settles. But of course, he settles all the time and Cohen says he never settled or never pleaded. And he pleaded and settled all the time. The Colin's premise was never admit guilt. And a settlement is an admission of guilt. And if you don't admit guilt, you can go to the process and claim victory pure ROY Cohn. So ROY Cohen was not only his lawyer that he turned to one of his lawyers, but he was considered considered him one of his best friends. He was constantly airy and best friend in cones. Is he in the film on on an interview that he gives them the early eighties brags that Donald Trump in a letter to him says that he's his best friend when Trump buys the bond with teller building, this massive concrete building historic and then in its place builds Trump Tower talk about the blueprint basically that involves the mob and ROY Cullen the Trump Tower story is exemplary it's just sets the pattern for the way Trump and the Trump organization did business and again, it's torn. The playbook of ROY Cohn. Probably didn't need to be this way the corners were cut to generate maximum prophets. And I think it was also in that time in New York. Just part of what you did as a skull Dogar to kind of get them off you involved and get special privileges to speed up construction and cetera et cetera et cetera. So this was a really corrupt project in I want to give credit to the journalist David Johnston who was doing this reporting in real time back in the eighties and has been chronicling the. The bad business dealings of the Trump organization for years, and we rely on an interview with David Johnston. The film to explain how something was very peculiar about the construction of Trump Tower, which ROY Cohn help Donald Trump achieve an engineer. In Trump rather cone, a shows off a letter from Trump thanking him for allowing the fast realization of the Trump Tower project a few things in particular, though, Trump towers built of concrete. Buildings in the eighties in New York. We're very rarely built of concrete. They were built of structural steel, usually, which is a much more efficient way to build. And one reason it was more efficient was that the mob at the time controlled the poured concrete. Contract business, and you need to pay off the mall and also the mob in a bit of subtle skulduggery control the unions. The unions could close the construction fences and keep the cement mixers waiting to come into the construction site and ruin your cement and cost you millions of dollars, basically. But indeed this building went up made of concrete because ROY Cohn, according to Johnston's reporting. Introduced Trump to all his mafia connections that allowed this project to go forward without any interruptions. There was another very famous thing. Which also I believe Hillary Clinton brought up in the campaign, which was that the bomb would tell her building which was the building that preceded Trump Tower on that site was demolished by a group of illegal immigrants called the polish brigade that were brought down in New York City from Rochester, New York, Trump never paid them. So not only was he employing illegal immigrants and not being appropriate taxes and having any accountability on that way back in the seventies and eighties, but he was also stiffen people again pure ROY Cohn. Cohn was expert tax evader and stiffer of contractors. He Trump Donald Trump early. Learn this it's thought from Cohn we. This story decades later to just this week where the New York Times in Washington Post reporting on undocumented immigrants who work at the West Chester golf course of President Trump, and though they were honored for being best employees repeatedly one by one they were called in. And they were fired. They are speaking out and saying Trump's full well knew that they didn't have the proper documents. Yes. It means so much of the film really is connecting the dots and giving even more truth to the famous George Santayana aphorism, those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it also like to quote Gorby doll. He used to say we live in the United States of Asia. All of this has president and sometimes very liberal precedent. The same people perpetrating the same misdeeds or crimes or telling the same lies and untruth. They've been proven and reported on for years, and yet it's occurring again now on a international scale with really terrifying. Long term consequences. So let's go back to your interview with Roger stone and two thousand seventeen where he once again quotes, right? Cowan. Famously argued that all the expenses of his law firm were deductible. The IRS did not see it. This way, ROY told me the whole point of dealing with the IRS was to die owing them as much as possible. That's Roger stone matter now..

"So one of the big stories, it's kind of been cloudy, and so many other obvious Gatien's news, and politics and culture is what Rudy Giuliani said about. Well, let's go back to the BuzzFeed story. So the BuzzFeed story came out and said that again, Jason Leopold one of the one of the and they and the editor they still stand by their story. Even though mothers team said that there were parts of it that weren't accurate. They said that Trump through some sort of documentation encourage Cohen to lie about the Trump Tower meeting. Am sorry about the Trump Tower acquisition. So sometime, you know, going back to I mean till the nineties Trump became obsessed with having property in Moscow. And I think one of the reasons why is he he believed that that was a much easier way to get cash and to get money outside the. Federal government. This is what other people have said. I don't know. As time went on and on. He couldn't get it. It was increasingly difficult. So in in two thousand fifteen eight became an obsession of him to get this Trump Tower built over there. It would mean hundreds of dollars for him. But then he decided he would run for president. Now, whether you believe he did it simply to build his brand never thinking he'd win or that. He really wanted to win while he was pursuing this deal in two thousand sixteen he came out and said that he wasn't. He said I have nothing to do with Russia. I didn't do anything. They said I wasn't talking to Russians in two thousand sixteen. Well, it turns out he was even though Cohen lied. Cohen went before congress and lied about it. Now Giuliani says oh, yeah. He was in Guiliani says it could have been right up until the election. So while Trump was pursuing a deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars in Russia. He was advocating eliminating sanctions worth billions to Putin. He was asking Russia to hack Clinton's emails of that. Love wikileaks. His son was meeting Russian officials to get dirt on Clinton and Rudy says it's no big deal. Here's Rudy Giuliani today or today. Well, just one or two tapes here saying the same thing that this is from the weekend, excuse me. This is him saying that well, the meetings doesn't really matter anymore when they had this. It doesn't really matter anymore when Trump was dealing with Russia. Listen up are standing that it that it went on throughout 2016 won a lot of them. But there were compensations can't be sure the exact date, but the president can remember having conversations with them about it throughout twenty six. Yeah. Probably up to could be up to as far as November are anxious cover until the election. I think that's Jake tapper from not mistaken. So put this in in your pipe and smoke it for a second. He's running for again. This is for you people that that support Trump on not you're not racist. You just support. You think he's good for the country and business? Okay. Let's put this in here. Okay. The guy that you voted for that we've been talking about Russia forever. Was trying to negotiate a deal with Russia while publicly saying he thought we should drop the sanctions against them sanctions for a lot of things, but most notably human rights violations and invading other countries. Chechnya Ukraine, whatever. So these these these are pretty strong saying sanctions to we can't go to war with Russia for obvious reasons, but we can hurt them economically, and we have, but we don't hurt Putin. And we don't hurt the oligarchs an oligarch would be a captain of industry like over here like the CEO of like Google or something that'd be an oligarch except that the oligarchs cut deals with the government, and they throw a little money, a Putin, and they get to keep even more. This is how it works. Maybe that's how it works over here too. I don't know. But the question is is like if Trump offer for that whole time he said he was running for president. He was actually negotiating with a murderer ahead of a foreign state that has nuclear missiles aimed at us via summaries and land-based and through bombers. Doesn't that bother you? Does it does it bother you? That he has been laundering money for them. And here's a good example of laundering money. Trump Tower was selling condos to Russian oligarchs or call him kleptocrats, and they steal the money. We call him a kleptocrat, and he was selling condos for three times what other people paid for them. That's money laundering. He gets ten million dollars for condo that's worth five or four. And he gives of of that money. He'll get of of money over the asking price. He'll give eighty percent of that back. But he gets a keep that other money for laundering the money for those Russians. A Russian purchased a piece of property from Trump in Florida. For one hundred million dollars. Interestingly Trump had purchase at Saint property two years before for forty million what happens to that money. There's a funnel back. We don't know. Because we can't see his taxes. We want to know what happened to that money in two thousand and four Abe, regardless of its within the statute of limitations. You see this is the problem. So when Rudy talks about this, and he throws it. He's being a lawyer. He when he said, and it's not on the tape. You just heard at one point. He said, I don't know what Trump and Cohen talked about, dammit, you know, yours lawyer. Of course, you know, you have attorney client privilege, you can tell you anything with Cohen really was told the why we're told to change a story like he did. Well, I mean, we will find out that sooner or later one hopes right one hopes that this is the kind of thing that we'll get to the bottom of. So Trump also called on Nancy Pelosi, apparently, not realizing she doesn't live in San Francisco, but to clean our filthy streets. And commonly Harris has a comment about that. But I love it that he would tell us to clean our streets. We'll get to that coming up next. I'm chip this GO..

"Put in motion Donald Trump's impeachment. Let's talk of impeachment. Impeachment. To impeachment. How close are we getting to impeachment? But yeah, so so that no one else reported anything different this president. Say that one more committed a federal crime time, congress we are at a turning point here. Individual number one is in big big trouble. Okay. So we have that s the first part of it. Then Chris Matthews gets very disappointed as he reads. Peter cars spokesman he's a spokesman for the special counsel. Peter cards statement from these special counsel's office buzzfeed's description specific statements to the special counsel's office and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this August regarding Mr Collins congressional testimony are not accurate don't hang on. Limiting. They did they did you. Did you see that? Let me read a little slower little more clear buzzfeed's description. This is a special counsel's office buzzfeed's description of specific statements to the special counsel's office and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office regarding Michael Cohen congressional testimony or not accurate. Meaning they are false. Buzzfeed reported that their sources told them that Michael Cohen told the special counsel. Trump told me to lie. About the time frame where I was in Moscow because he was running for president did want people to know, I was in Moscow. Trying to get a deal to get Trump Tower built there, and you know, people can spend then we're trying to sweep things from Ladimir Putin. Maybe that's why he's owned by Russia, which of course, is not true. So they said it's just it's not accurate yet. The media doesn't wanna accept it. So I was regarding Mr Collins congressional testimony. Accurate. Don't fall for what these politicians there want you to do they want you to think we're all crooked. We're not the record of the press in reporting story. I don't actually pretty spectacular saying it's false as saying not the overall all accurate. In term of art for flax. Doesn't mean it's not certain I owed. Is it wasn't quite true story published wasn't quite twenty two hours later. We got this statement. That's a strange great. That's a weird fact better audience at home. Even more frustrating than it was last night. It's frustrating. The special counsel did not specifically say what was inaccurate strategy of saying anything ever even off the record is very frustrating Muller? Didn't do the media any favors tonight. And he did do the president. This is what liberals do something happens. There's some pushback there's some nuance and liberals go into this like backpedaling, I just think this is a bad days for so it reinforces every bad stereotype about the news media. Yes. It does about that. Would you heard? I mean, we have multiple montages the medium peach peach beat visit is it does it. And it turns out they were all wrong. They were all wrong. Democrats went on the media. They went on TV. All day long on Friday. This is it we got him. He must be impeached. You gotta do it. Of course. This reminds me of the whole, you know, if the gloves don't fit, you must acquit, but doesn't matter not here. Not here. Democrats were all over the media. And they were all about we're going to investigate this based on this story. This is it for the president. That's it. I mean, Adam Schiff led the way Adam Schiff tweeted out the allegation. The president of the United States may have suborn suborn perjury before our committee in an effort to curtail the investigation and cover up his business dealings Russia's among the series to date. We will do what's necessary to find it. If it's true. Apparently, it's not another congressman democrat, Ted lieu nutjob talking about bombshell. This is obstruction of Justice. Eric swale will never nutty congressman from California more evidence of collusion. It actually turned out to be not true. Not true. How many more things can they get wrong, by the way, how many more there's a whole? This is stories. I have all these stories that the media has gone wrong about Russia things like that. But there's something else. That's really good. I thought it was actually I mean, he didn't want to admit it. But he nailed it. Jeffrey Toobin at of all people number seven, if you don't mind Michael Jeffrey Toobin legal analysts on C N N can't stand. Trump at times has moments of honesty. Listen to what he said people are going to think about the median listen to this. I have a different view of the implications of all this. My view is this is the larger message that a lot of people are going to take from this story is that the news media are a bunch of leftist were dying to get the president. And they're willing to lie to do it. Yeah. And and I don't think that's true. Oh by but is that is that different? I'm focused on the media side, preach talking about the law enforcement side. They're not they're not contradictory. But I just think this is a bad day for us. And you know, there's no I mean, I don't know. Ryan disagree a little bit. I, but I just think it reinforces every bad stereotype about the news media. Yeah. It does. We're rights again again. Due to get this special counsel, which they everything the special counsel. Does they are all about oh, always gonna get Trump all Robert Muller, just blew his nose. That means he's about to wrap up the investigation. Oh my God. Robert Muller got a new haircut. He's getting ready to get out there. And then Robert Muller, basically says calm down. This is not true. Which by the way, remember going back to last week. Giancarlo ABC news said my sources are telling me don't expect any bombshells. This report is going to be anti-climactic. And the media basis had shut the hell up, man. And you haven't heard a peep from him since have you? So the media once again is proven to be a bunch of jackals that they're not journalists. They're just out. There are their job is to just get Trump thrown at office. They might as well be Democrats at the Democrats think their job as let's investigate Trump till we throw them out office. We'll find sudden they'll throw him at office. This is embarrassing. Isn't it for them at least eight eight zero eight eight zero five six seven eight. I have a whole bunch of stories founders area, a whole bunch of Russia stories that are just not true. Not true that they keep getting away with over and over again every week. They have something against the wall last week. It's what I was brought on Fox News for can you talk about this on your time story that the FBI had the president under investigation as possible puppet to Russia. We what why? Approves the FBI was crooked as hell up top. What? So we'll get to all of this. You can comment as one what are the president say he had a nice strong reaction to this very good, very professional. That's why they're not saying anything about it. We'll get to that. Coming up seven twenty morning ritual. Gary Lewis Canas team, seventy two sites. Most stimulating talk the morning ritual with Garrett Lewis good feet arch supports new year. Start off the pain son of a year on the right foot, by the way. Pain-free don't start the year. This is day five of the teachers strike UT LA and LA USDA officials met yesterday at city hall. Now the way that KBC wrote it up is that era Garcetti mediated the talks. But as I understand it. He was not there wasn't even there. Now. He's like, hey, you guys wanna use my room? So they sat down about an hour ago right now as we speak. So they've been at the table for about an hour. They met for what twelve hours yesterday. I through midnight almost thought when I when I realized that Monday will be a holiday Martin Luther King junior will be honored on that day that I think gives them enough. Space. I guess I think they'll get something done in class will resume. I hope. So I mean, I hope for the people who have kids in LA unified. Now, giant headache? This is a giant just ridiculous. Well, and the fact that that principals can can punish kids who are marked truants. Don't think it's ridiculous. They could I don't I don't know anybody that would. But we'll find out in a couple of days, I suppose thousands of police officers arrived in Davis today to pay their respects to officer Natalie corona ambushed last week while responding to a routine car crash. So is a horrible story. This memorial service started about an hour ago. It's continuing right now an arc pavilion on the UC Davis campus. We've talked many times, unfortunately, many times. About law enforcement funerals for officers killed in line of duty. And it's something that is it's incredibly powerful. It's an incredibly powerful image to see men and women in uniform from law enforcement agencies literally around the world that come and honor their fallen brothers and sisters at these at these memorial service. It was Natalie's third week on the job on January tenth guy by the name of Kevin Limbaugh rides up on a bicycle and opens fire as she stood on the street investigating a car crash. He shot her multiple times. And she was the first officer killed in the line of duty in almost sixty years and back then in nineteen Fifty-nine was also very young police officer who was killed at Twenty-three-year-old killed back in nineteen Fifty-nine. The Michael Cohen story is interesting in that the latest BuzzFeed article about President Trump and Michael Cohen suggests. That the president back when he was a candidate encouraged Michael Cohen to work on a deal to get a Trump Tower built in Moscow. And then when asked about it by members of congress that Trump supposedly told Michael Cohen to lie about it. We'll talk more about that. We get into swamp watch. But Michael Collins showed up to his Manhattan apartment today with his arm in a sling and a black eye. Yeah. And had a small bandage on his right hand, the kind used to cover a small wound made by an IV. Did he get his asked handed to him? He could have and who did it probably women for Cohen that Twitter account that was set up to talk about what sexy beast that guy was the Twitter account that was set up by him. Will do the IT firm that he paid up the Twitter, but come on, wouldn't you? If I am the if I'm setting up a Twitter account. Count. If Blake sets up a Twitter account through me called women for Blake. And he wants me to write nice things about him. Like what a hot pizza man beef. That is I would say, hey, Blake. Is there a particular tone? You want me to take with these tweets the talk about you like that one. What's the second tweets? I. I would only get through one. The new are women for Blake. We've got a video of Blake up on our Instagram page at Gary and Shannon. He invented a new game. It's called scooter darts, skirts, skirts, skirt skirt skirt. So if you want to check out skirts Blake and his natural habitat are Kelly continues to trend. I don't know if you've seen this. But the lifetime was replaying their series called we're going to take our Kelly down. And it was all about this story about R Kelly in the allegations of not just child pornography, which is what he was tried on in Chicago, but ongoing persistent relationships with girls who were underage sex with underage girls. Sexual abusive behavior towards young women that date back twenty years Sony Music has finally finally dropped our Kelly. They didn't do any external announcement of the move. They say they're not going to talk about it, but to avoid legal ramifications. They are going to drop R Kelly removed from the RCA website. Which lists the label signed artists, they did it just about ten o'clock this morning. So they're not sure if they're saying the back catalog would remain with RCA Sony the last release that he did with this this label was a crisp. She's a Christmas album that are Kelly put out a couple of years ago. Those are two things that shouldn't go together. That is by the way that if you haven't seen that that is hard to why don't want to see it. I feel like I've I've read enough about R Kelly and the and the sex hostages, or whatever you wanna call them. I I don't really want to watch that for entertainment emphasis and the the original videotape. You see the aunt of the then teenage girl who was involved in that videotape because the aunt used to be a backup, dancer and the aunt was the one who introduced them in the first. "I don't know why that song makes me laugh so much, but I joined. It's very very chill could handle today. It's great. It's it's. It feels like sort of like. The the lounge music like the the the lounge music that hit like about five years ago. No it was but that came back a little bit. It's an artist name Jim warr who was in that sort of style. Is that right? There was also like some other whatever we let's not get too caught up in this. But what is old is new again? Isn't it Digby we were going to? I it feels like Donald Trump wants to hit all three of the same articles of impeachment that Richard Nixon was faced with and this story in BuzzFeed. We we we gotta be a little bit careful because there's this stuck out for me in this BuzzFeed story, and I and I wanna get your take on this, obviously. But. It was reported by to law enforcement officers who are familiar with the investigation. I guess that that Donald Trump specifically told. Cohen to lie to congress about Cohen's repeated I guess, you know, contacts over this Trump Tower building in Russia now, the Trump Tower building in Russia itself, you know, could be just as a knock you as you know, the, you know, you wanted to build a Trump Tower and in Russia. He's perfectly allowed to do that for some reason he didn't want that to be known, and he told his lawyer to lie to congress about it is lawyer, I guess did lied congress about it. And I just read this before you came on. But it's worth reading again. I mean, I think you know, this is that the third article of impeachment. Nixon was specifically the words were counseling witnesses with respect to giving false or misleading statements to lawf- lawfully authorized investigative officers and. False and misleading testimony in duly instituted judicial and congressional proceedings check, right. I mean, if this story is true from BuzzFeed check. Absolutely. I mean, this is and you know, I this isn't the the I we've heard of this. It just has some new detail that we hadn't heard before. And one of the reasons why I think it's got so much credibility is that this this charged turned up in the Michael Cohen the Muller sentencing agreement for for Michael Cohen for his lying to congress and this. So we we knew that this sort of was out there. But what we didn't know before what this adds to. It is the fact that that this is been confirmed by to law enforcement representatives. When assumes this must be from the southern district of New York, which is interesting and itself because we assume that this stuff was sort of centered in the Muller investigation. But it's possible that they're both kind of looking at this Trump Tower Moscow deal for different reasons. And that's how the information is being shared among the two offices. But there's also this detail that there is documentary evidence. Now what that is. We don't know. I heard Leopold on TV this morning reporter, right? Jason Leopold saying that they were very confident they wouldn't say that they had seen it or not seen it. They'd been briefed whatever it is. But they're very confident that it exists. You know, I guess you can think they're lying about that. But it wouldn't make sense. And what that means is is that it's either tape which would be except extremely, you know, you wanna talk about the Watergate parallels, or, you know, at some kind of in order that came through on paper. Now, that's not how Trump does business. He's generally a guy who does who gives his orders verbally..

"You can see it for yourself. Second thing that I think you need to know this fake news story. The media is trying to push every week. There's a fake news story about Trump any breaking the law going to jail and never sticks. That's why it's hard to take any of this stuff. Seriously. Some BuzzFeed writer BuzzFeed story. Claim Michael Cohen says Trump told me to lie congress about my visit to Moscow to see if we can get a Trump Tower built. So on CNN Alison camera to ask the author. Did you actually see the evidence for yourself that this happened? He said, no. But my to and anonymous sources claim it did. Awesome. Awesome stuff right there. Right. Third thing. I think you need to know is that House Republicans put together a measure that would actually pay all federal workers being furloughed while the government remains closed. So they could just get people paid. They don't they don't go broke. And and. And at the same time, you still can talk about border security, and the Democrats rejected in the house only six voted Republicans who was rejected two twenty two to one hundred five. So don't give me this thing that Democrats care about people because they don't now like this. No, no, no three things. I think you need to know. I guarantee that Ogun gone right through to the Senate. They would have passed it Trump signed it and said, all right? Let's get this thing done. So we have that. All right. So I've been telling you about these these you haters, I played the one earlier, right? They're all part of this. There are some of these these new Jewish leaders to Labe. You have you have to labor you have this Alon, Omar. From Minneapolis Minnesota somewhere. Minnesota Alexandria, Casio Cortez is in this group. Remember what she said about Palestine you remember we played along. I mean when she was running. She had no idea what she was talking about when it came to Israel and Palestine and admitted that even though she major to be you an economics and international relations. She had to find out more from experts. Yep. Find out more from experts. Well, these and there were others the Tucson ties coming. They have formed the Justice. Democrats definitely not the Justice league. Justice Democrats have progressive political action committee. Right. Justice democrats. It says here twenty six seventy nine candidates endorsed by Justice Democrats won their respective primary. Elections. Primaries seven of them, one of the general election who were the seven Justice Democrats. I told her a sheet where to delay the when they called Trump loves hates Jews loves hanging out with the the ju-, Hayden Palestinian HAMAS. Loving people Ilan, Omar, you just heard her Alexandria ocasio Cortes, another one Premila giant, Paul. We played her a few days ago. She's one that claims that Trump wants these policies to make America pure. Row Khanna Ianna Presley, and you ready. Who grover? Raul Grijalva is teaming up with these haters. You know, I wonder what mayor Rothschild since he's Jewish like me. I wonder what he would think about this. So in Tucson representation, you have your congressman hanging out with a whole bunch of people that hate Israel. Don't like the Jews. This is where it's frustrating trying to find a a congregation. Because you'll have you'll have Jews here in Tucson that will raise Raul Grijalva because they're clueless because they're they're they're ignorant to these things. My former rabbi right here in Tucson. I'm sure he would praise Raoul Rolv, again, it'd be awesome. If maybe, you know, maybe Tucson news now but foster high pants bud yesterday. Played a story from bud where he went to an oral valley elementary school. To show how horrible. The partial government shutdown is because these elementary school kids couldn't get a tour in the desert to see some cactus. Terrible hitting home here. Oh, the humanity is an Email that I got maybe if good old bud could actually hike his pants up go over to relatives office. Call him say Raoul. What's your take on you, teaming up as Justice Democrats with these members of congress that don't like Israel and don't like Jews? Your constituents would like to know. Nothing. Nothing at all. This is why Raoul when I come on this show. Yep. Listen, I thought that that's something. That's very important. And we need to talk about these kinds of things. And unfortunately, the rest of the media will not do the job here. Which is why they're news is boring, and it stinks. And it has no impact. And it be would it be. You can comment if you'd like eight eight zero eight eight zero five six seven eight. You have. That's now. I also you something. You something interesting threw me up over there real quick if you don't mind Goodrich. Chris matthews. With a unique take on the Trumpster stopping the Democrats Nancy Pelosi from get on a military plane headed to do a little worldwide tour while the government's partially shut down. Listen to this you like the nature Bisco Dell. The fact that was going to have ghanistan hardly a pleasure trip for the Paris air show or something like that they weren't bringing their spouses with him. You know, what you know, a real could Cadel versus a junket. This was not a junket. Let's talk about that shot part of it. They were in the bus heading to joint base Andrews he made him. Look like fools coming back sitting there at the capitol in the driveway. They're basically trying to figure out what's coming next quantum in the act as if they were sneaking out of town look stupid. I mean, clearly, well, it looks like a political dirty tricks. Even Chris Matthews. I mean, he doesn't like Trump, you know that. But he there'll be down over there. Make sure there's no there's not coming out of that. But he's in the he made them look stupid. He caught them in the act. Yes, exactly. What happened? A rare glimmer of honesty from Chris Matthews. Rear glimmer of honesty. Yep. Now, there's there's much more that we need to get too much more that we need to talk about. And I'm running out of time to do it where do people want the wall where do they want that ain't spent a lotta time on this? But you know, what will come back you what I wanna do. I forgot about this the president because you think the people that work for the government or are against the president. He gave a speech at the Pentagon yesterday. I want you to hear exactly what happened the applause what he said what somebody was doing while they were there. We've time. Also, we'll talk about where people want to put the wall because the people who are against the wall. But they actually went more in more detail. Where people think the wall needs to be. "I know we're all sad that the donald trump junior's marriage could did not hold together vanessa haydon trump the wife of president trump's oldest son donald trump filed for divorce thursday afternoon in manhattan court ms trump who is forty is seeking an uncontested divorce to end her twelve year marriage with the president son mr trump who is also forty the eldest of five children from president trump's loins and but again the speculation is it's it's an uncontested quick divorce where assets can be swiftly transferred on the same day an independent special counsel subpoenas the family business and i i find that curious yeah it is curious i think they're trying to set their setting something up because things are going to start tumbling apart because robert mueller the special counsel as not just asked for politely he has subpoenaed trump holdings and he has subpoenaed any documents that from trump holdings that might relate to the thirteen russians that he indicted that are under now an and i don't know i think those guys are not around they're they're probably in russia but they you know so you ever come back here buddy we're gonna put on trial which they know but he's he's obviously looking for relations between donald trump's businesses and russian the russian oligarchs and ladimir putin and and i don't know how really how dp has to look when we know that before the election representatives of trump holdings were in moscow trying to get at trump tower built in moscow get permission to do that and get alone.
