"The newspaper carrier who ran into Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer a few months ago. The story was that Ed Troyer was at his home about one A.m. saw a car driving down his street in his neighborhood, and he said it was stopping in front of different homes, and he wanted to make sure that nothing untoward. Was happening. So so Ed Troyer gets out of his home and he goes up and he confronts the guy and the guy's a newspaper carrier, he says. Or he was Cedric Alzheimer's 24 years old. And so Troyer says that the confrontation that the guy was really upset Detroiter was was asking him who he was and what he was doing. And then Troyer called 911 and and said that, you know, accused all timer. Of being hotheaded two blocks from my house. I cut some in my driveway. Just practice. Kill them, and they blocked them in here right now, okay? So now they say that to come, Please respond because Ed Troyer asked for just, you know, one or two units to come out to check this out. I really need to one or two people here at first. Absolutely. I'm getting the car or not to let me leave. Cantor says the guy was blocking him in Then after that, and, uh and you know, he kept saying that this guy says, threatened to kill him suddenly quite to him, and he just says, I'm a racist film itself. Okay. I don't want anything other than him. What? Just let me go home. What's it came out of the house so to Cologne police came out. They took a report. They say the Troyer in the report backtracked. The accusation that the guy said he was going to kill him. Troyer told me right after the story broke that, uh he never said the guy threatened or you never backtracked on the kill me, but that the guy said, Take me out or some other verb E edge. And and Some are saying Well, Troy walked back that he threatened to kill me. There's a little bit of the body camera audio. Okay, black? No. In a white neighborhood. They don't work that has nothing to do with that. Yeah, no following me. Okay, So that's said Recall Timer, the newspaper carrier who was obviously very upset that police and there was a big, huge police response because it was the sheriff who called it in. TROIA asked for one or two cars, but It was a massive response from several different agencies. Okay, now here's what's notable about this. Cedric Alzheimer. He didn't Report the encounter with Ed Troyer. He just let it go. It seems like And then about two months later, two months after the incident, the Seattle Times heard about this thing that happened and the Seattle Times, which has a bunch of reporters who hate cops. Either. There's no question about that that there is a strong anti cop bias at the Seattle Times. So a couple months later, the Seattle Times where it's a big story about this racial confrontation. Between Ed Troyer and Cedric call timer. And you know, a court will likely end up deciding this because Alzheimer has now filed A $5 million at least. $5 million legal claim against Pierce County. The attorneys representing said recalled Timer submitted the claim this week. They said that Troyer violated Alzheimer's constitutional rights and caused him severe emotional. Distress. A couple of questions if he if he endured severe emotional distress, Why didn't he file a complaint? But he didn't for two months. The story was nothing until the Seattle Times got a tip about it. And then the Times writes a big story, and then that's when Alzheimer Suddenly says that he suffered severe emotional distress. I would think that he would have reported it immediately or the day after sometime that week. If If he thought that it was such a, You know if it was worth $5 million, but I'm so tired of and a court will decide if there is anything wrong. The transpired there. But just the idea that people are asking for $5 million in this case from the taxpayers of Pierce County. For for one, he says. One gun was pointed at him when the police responded, but they sorted it out. They found out he was a newspaper carrier, and they let him go. He went on his way. Now I understand that a lousy thing to have experienced But Just unseen like a $5 million emotional distress. Claim to me. And they said in the tort claim That Alzheimer has been working as a newspaper carrier for the Tacoma News Tribune for six years. And he is the primary support for his five Children. Okay? Well, $5 million is like An infinite number of years working as a newspaper carrier, which is a job that's going to be around for maybe another year or two at most, but, uh, It used to be. It used to be. That Legal awards. Monetary Awards were based on what somebody's earnings were. And you know, right or wrong if somebody who made a million a year Was was killed somehow. And his family lost that income that factored in, and if somebody was making 100,000 year, the jury's would usually awards considerably less because they were trying to replace income. And this, you know, emotional distress for somebody who didn't even report the incident and who Had seemingly moved on until the Seattle Times gets the tip. Two months later. Five million just seems a little excessive. You know, I talked about this earlier this week. Tip where? A guy was shot down in White center. And he's a suspected gang member, according to the police, and the streets are is posting a go fund me So this guy can get out of the region and his son was shot and killed a chop. And you know his His mom. The mom of the kids shot a chop is seeking many, many, many million dollars from the city of Seattle. And I I understand you ask for the sky and you try to scare them into settling for what is still a big number..

Ojibwe Historian Discusses the Problem With America's National Parks

"This week. A conversation between tracy hunt and david troyer about how to make america's best idea better. I'm julie longoria. This is the experiment. A show about our unfinished country. David grew up on the leech. Lake reservation in northern minnesota. It's near what they call the mississippi headwaters region and it's about one hundred miles from the border with canada. The border lakes are basically how we travel and have traveled for centuries for generations. Native people would use these waters to visit each other and trade among different villages. It's basically a highway a watery highway and when he was growing up a new national park called voyagers was opening up right near there. Basically the part was plopped down in our yard. And david says that's the way a lot of national parks were created all throughout history. You know i think. Many americans imagine these national parks are made out of these. Untouched pristine natural landscapes. That's not true. People were living there. I like glacier. National park was established. Exactly a black homelands and the black feet reservation. Boundary was pushed off of what became glacier so they took the land directly away from black. Beat the black. People weren't allowed to hunt or fish or trap or harvest timber or worship within the confines of glacier the parks were set up in such a way as to deprive native people of our homelands and our treaty rights. The parks were just another way of taking. At least from native people.

Black men in Puffy Jackets had his wallet, but during a struggle, he was able to get it back. By the time Troyer called 911. The suspects were gone. They're gonna come back, but I just got one years. Officers arrived but found no suspects. They declined to file a police report. The incident has come to light in the wake of a separate 911 call Troyer placed in January in which the sheriff said he had cornered a man who either tried to kill him or had threatened to kill him. Troyer phrased it both ways. The man turned out to be a black newspaper carrier on his regular route. That incident has led some to charge Troyer with racism and call for his resignation. Troyer has denied race played any role. Corwin HEADACHE Cuomo News Democratic Party leaders in Tacoma

You want me a farmer you probably will be if you want to be a faithful keenum worker than you probably will be that again. It's going to be based upon you desire what you want. I've often told god that he knows best. So just in case. I pray something that he knows. I don't really want the answers. My fear different way to ask me at all. So would i give him god the authority in my prayer life to actually redirect the energy the the prayers afraid to what he knows. I really want in what he wants. Were scheme sake I'm reminded of palmer song. I want to To quote is teach us to pray when cold. Our hearts in far from the are wondering spirit. Stray and thoughts and lips move heavily. "As i've said before and perhaps you've for this the areas. I believe the water. We know the engine the magnet the fire the sole to access to power behind every victory. He is himself said without me. Do nothing period. Nothing prayer connects with the source of life in power and allows for that source of life power flow in us in europe the soul and overflow to influence the world for eternity fasting. Also i should know has become a regular part of my prayer life for a number of years. Now i believe if we really want wanna move mountains we wanna plant churches. We wanna win souls. We want to change the world swimming me because we have a deep desire to do whatever it takes to get what we want. And what god wants Whatever we stop eating and start praying tells. God's something tells were serious. Fasting though includes more than just not eating it also includes things that you enjoy doing that you sacrifice and then replaced with prayer also believe that prayer can be hindered by number of things on top of that is you know the things that spares relationships How your relationship with your wife or your dad or your boss or brother. Misuse on maintained us. That relationship with god Are legitimate god in how we answer our prayers having direct correlation with what our lessons ships are with those around us so we have a poor relationship with our a sardine can Then we need to work on this relationship before it can expect great things from god. I really just doesn't always work perfectly. But if we have done our part in working with her relationship than god wanted that in by the way we can never fool god you know we can try to patch a relationship superficially and not mean but god sees exactly the way we feel deep down inside and I think it's very important. Their listen ships around us are clear. Nobleman forgotten working alive also learned that new more recently than technology is more of a hindrance to to my pro-life than a health Withings to determine do is actually power off line devices before i pray so they don't beat personal proton. What about wondering. Mind as we pray so keep like i said it updated prayer list that i have in front me that i can use to guide me to pray and keep my mind from wondering. That's a string more fair in as as i pray. I listened to the spirit guide to prompt me on how to pray for these things. Pray for other things as i praise you my for time I think what you want in life yet. And i worked for the builder program and i often tell callers when it comes down to us. What you really want is what you get. If you don't want god he's never forced himself into your life but if you do want him your honor that she'll began to open up away in real himself.

You're not pulling my leg I'm hundred percent serious. But. Sizing, does it make sense? Well, it burnt traders listed as alien son. So I'm trying to wrap my head around what other character was an alien son in that movie and that's the only one that jumps to mind. This. Washington state's stay-at-home order at a glance

"Right here is where the state of Washington is in terms of covert nineteen as of now there are two hundred two thousand four hundred and sixty nine positive cases with a hundred and twenty three fatalities all state parks wildlife areas and water access areas in the state have been closed for the next two weeks after governor Jay Inslee's declaration that the state would impose a stay home stay safe order counties throughout the state are determining exactly how to enforce that order because initially did say it was punishable by law make a mistake this order is enforceable by law can be enforced Susan Holmes county sheriff Adam Fortney called into Katie T. H. to talk about their police departments reaction to the order and sheriff for Nick claims that they will not be harshly enforcing this order if you think we're gonna be out there in neighborhoods checking for people who are violating a stay at home order no absolutely not we're not going to be doing that kind of stuff but he did claim that Snohomish county police would be breaking up large group gatherings if they saw them I think it could be something as simple as drive up and get on your P. M. say okay guys I'm done trying to get in your houses and things like that we're just not going to be out you know actively looking for single violations are taken or something like that that's just not what we give the law is it can be a pretty rigid words so Pierce county sheriff ed Troyer talk to Cairo radio and he said that the order should be considered a request as opposed to a law that point we will not be taking anybody in jail and not doing any enforcement because it's not a mandatory order it's all about education for these guys they're gonna come up to you they're going to talk to you well hopefully not you because you're staying at home but go up to people talk to people explain to them what's going on maybe they haven't heard some news a slow to some people but that seems to be the path they're going to take in dealing with people who are not following

"Well I'm is on being today with the typically writer David Troyer well well here's another thing I noticed in your radio talk about their namesake the word sake that's important that's really important culturally and that's also connected to the word for body yeah you when you're given an inch of a name you have seven eight nine name sixty of one person who's running the ceremony in and the others are participate in the ceremony and the word for a name sake both the person running the ceremony and these other attendants in the ceremony is is me away and neo is my body the idea being that when you're giving somebody a name or receiving when you're partaking in their soul you're basically gifting somebody portion of your soul which will reside van in that other person's body and that is something that's a boom a piece of knowledge sends piece of your identity that you carry with you through your life do you have all those names because you can get anywhere from just one to six or seven in it at that sermon which usually occurs of course when you're ideally when you're quite young so when you give someone a name you're giving them part of your soul and when you accept the name you're both accepting the soul given in your given part of your own and so you're connected in ways that are theirs were profound and meaningful and communicated by the very word which the English translation namesake doesn't really cover no and so those the kinds of understandings which are obvious to Jewish speakers in your novel the translation of doctor Apelles he is described as a different person when he's feeling like a different person speaks languages his tribe's and others that he can joke you can flirt and then there's very evocative phrase you said these languages lend themselves to memory explain that very well myths and ideas about Indian people often obscure the true dimensions of our of our lives and that's very much the case for for doctor Paley's he's kind of shy and not very stoic and a little pudgy and super smart but not very personable and lives in the city and works as a librarian of sorts every strange library his life does not conform to any of the ideas that most people have about Indian lives and the reason is that those ideas are ideas that people have in at least in this context of America in English so English is almost the language that we have for storytelling about Indians is almost almost his enemy or it certainly not helping him express his his truest self and it's it's these other native languages which he both had as a child and acquired as someone studying linguistics that he feels more comfortable and because he doesn't have to do combat in those languages with the trove of notions and icons and images and ideas that attends Indians in English in his native languages he's on burden of all of those things and he is he becomes a newly made in them and it's easy for him to more accurately remember his past the dangerous for native people to and also for it for that my character that that way where is likely to misconstrue ourselves perhaps in English and that does speak to this idea that a language carries more than words I mean I think what you're saying also is that while English can tell some of the narrative and the story of what happened to native people certain memories are only going to be kept alive and that those tongues that's true and and in the age of a context two other things are kept alive and this tongues two very important things one is the ceremonial life the jury ceremonies are are very rigidly enforced in this runs counter to the idea of native spirituality is kind of a emotional and spiritual free for all where you just have to feel it you can just feel it be it and do it and it took a ceremonies run counter to that notion were there to really tightly controlled in some ways and ends orthodoxy plays a big part in the ceremonies which really isn't jive with me an example of what Ford oxy would be in a ceremony to two examples like one in search of a ceremonies you can not to do the ceremonies in any other language than a chip and two you can not use any kind of modern forms of technology to preserve and you can't talk about them either outside of the ceremony but we can talk about the reasons and rationale and that the substance of the ceremony itself is largely concerned with the idea of transmission end of human to human and spirit to human transmission of knowledge healing as communicated to legends and songs and procedures so those ceremonies can be done in any other language they can't be written down they can be recorded you can't videotape them and so if the language goes those ceremonies which are central to who we are.

"We have it today. Not just between tribes. But among tribes Troyer tells of reservation, life and urban migration. Economic change and political movements naming a more nuanced approach. One example, the forced removal of young natives from their homes to attend boarding schools. Kids were prevented from speaking their languages are punished for practicing their religions, they were forcibly Christianize those things were painful on the other hand, you took all these native kids from all these different tribes spread across the country. You shove them in school together in these kids foreign relationships and friendships romantic relationships networks, and then they carry those out into the world when they left school. So if you told the story boarding schools as only a tragedy. Well, you would miss quite a bit. You'd miss a lot. So yeah, I'm not interested in the tragic narrative, not interested in the story of hope, I'm interested in a story of complexity and depth wise at the narrative is that continue. I think it's a way of dealing with national guilt. I think America always takes her temperature by by looking at what it thinks of as the native American corpse. But the fact is we're still alive. We're doing much more than suffering in many ways native lines are hard. We suffer from access to health to education to capital to credit depowered. So all those things are real problems for sure, but we're more than just a some of a number of conditions were more than just a collection of problems. But people don't really tune into that all that off. Our new voices emerging to tell their own native American stories, including writers Tommy orange. David Troyer anthropology who teaches literature and creative writing at the university of southern California. And is a member of the Ojibwa nation tries to revitalize that view in a new book the heartbeat of wounded knee native America from eighteen ninety to the present David Troyer joins us from Los Angeles. Thanks so much for being with us. Thanks for having me chapter after chapter. It's like one shattered myth after another. And I say that with great respect let let's begin with this one many if not most native American communities today are urban not tribal. How how has that changed? Oh my gosh. Yes. So one thing that I was trying to tackle in the book was this idea. And it's a pernicious idea that that Indians are in America, but not of America that native communities are predominantly reservation based and like little islands in the American see. And and one thing that I've known to be true. And that many other native people have always known to be true is that we are as much a part of the country as as the country is bent shaped by us to and as such we've been a part of all the biggest moments in migrations in American history. We joined the armed forces in World War One in great numbers and again in World War Two after World War Two like a lot of populations. We moved from rural areas to urban areas. But the fact is we've been living Indian and American lives for for decades. Previous I've got to get you to talk about your background, your family background. It's fascinating. Wasn't fascinating to me when I was a kid. I couldn't wait. I couldn't wait to leave. It all behind when I was a disaffected in morose teenager. And as soon as I left for college. I couldn't wait to get back. I wanted what I thought of as a normal family. I wanted to kind of a stern sort of emotionally unavailable father. I wanted to I saw that show. Yeah. Okay. I wanted to mother who made me cookies and what I had. Instead was this fearsome brilliant American Indian mother, Margaret Sealy Troyer, my mother who survive lots of neglect in abject poverty in our village on the Leech lake reservation in Minnesota and went on to nursing school. And from there to law school and became eventually, the first American Indian woman judge in the country, my father and other hand wasn't a stern emotionally distant Scandinavian fathered. Like the ones I knew growing up. He was this wildly emotional intense, Jewish Holocaust survivor and in his life. He suffered so many hardships. He lost his country. He lost his language. He lost his customs. He lost his culture. He lost his family. And yet he was ever hopeful. I asked him once shortly before he died. I was asking him about America, generally and asked him, how can you? Stand the things that this country does. And he looked at me like, I was an idiot. And he said this country saved my life. I've found refuge here from Europe. And without this country. I wouldn't exist. I'd be dead. He said, so so I I love I love America. And I love her so much that I spend every day thinking how I can help her be better. And I really thought about that. As I started writing this book..
