" The shooting death of reps start take off was a shock to the hip hop community I got the gangs had it on me. That's forever it isn't the first time a rap star has been shot to death at a young age and goodness knows you do not have to be a prophet to say that the death of takeoff likely won't be the last. This one somehow felt different with the word of many deaths in the hip hop community come stories about gang ties, beefs with fellow musicians and criminal records, but when takeoff was shot to death at a bowling alley in Houston, even the city's police chief Troy finner noted, but that was not the case this time around. And every once spoke of what a great young man this is, how peaceful he is. What a great artist. Want to know my moves and all my spots, but I move clever. Kick off was just 28 when he was shot to death in Houston, but as AP entertainment correspondent Jonathan landrum junior reports, he had already carved out for himself a fairly rich musical legacy. He's not known as will as much as quavo and offset. He has done a lot on the music and he was really looking to prove himself. Take off what's the youngest and most laid back of the rap trio Migos made up of him, his uncle quavo and his cousin offset, they were all raised together by takeoff's mom, but while the other two got attention with high profile collaborations and other celebrity stuff, take off did his talking through his lyrics as AP's lantern tells us. Even though he was the youngest out of the group, he was a person that really kind of pushed that forward because while quavo and offset, they were getting all their claim and getting a whole lot of notoriety, take off was the one who was still grinding and still trying to prove themselves to run through it. Get that bag. Come on. Titanic yacht big enough but that did not mean that tank off wasn't trying to increase his musical profile, just last month he teamed with quavo to drop a new album only built for infinity links. It was designed to help him to get more respect for his rap lyrics, and that was something he seemed too sense himself in a recent addition of the podcast drink champs took off said it's time to give me my flowers. I don't want them later on when I'm not here, but sadly and take off's case just as in many others, those flowers were just starting to blossom before a bullet claimed his life. A Moscow's Gabriel

The mission is the first step in getting American astronauts back to the moon. There's a reasonable chance that Democrats will retain control of the Senate following the midterm elections. That's according to senator Bernie Sanders, appearing on ABC's this week, the Vermont independent pointed to divisive issues like abortion rights and gun control, as he predicted Republicans could lose some traction with voters. Four people are dead, including a suspect after a man set a fire in a house in Houston early today and shot the residence as they fled. It took place at a home that was being used as a multi rental property. This suspect a very sadly and very evilly set fire to several residents laid weight and fired up on them. Houston police chief Troy finner says the suspect was a resident who was reportedly about to be evicted from the property. That's the latest I'm Julie Ryan. And I did his Pellegrini in the Bloomberg newsroom. Messages at senator Elizabeth Warren as we've been reporting responding to fed chair Jay Powell's plans to keep hiking interest rates to fight inflation and Warren says the fed's rate hikes could tip the U.S. into a recession. She's also praising President Biden's move to cancel up to $20,000 in student loan debt per borrower. 40% of the folks who have student loans do not have a college diploma four year diploma. These are people who are truck drivers and who are nail technicians and nurses, aides, they are actually going to get their debt canceled out. And Warren also telling CNN State of the Union, this means middle and working class families can build stronger futures for their children. Brabant senator Bernie Sanders meantime calling GOP criticism of the student loan break, a double standard. Because he says Republicans have been giving breaks to the wealthiest taxpayers all along, and not to the working class. Sanders says the richest Americans get even bigger tax breaks. I don't hear any of these Republicans walking when we get massive tax breaks to billionaires when we have an effective tax rate today such that the 1% I have a lower effective tax rate than working people. And senders commenting on ABC's this week heard here on Bloomberg radio. Investors this week likely to turn some of their attention to the jobs data coming out, including a report on job openings Tuesday, and then the August employment report coming out Friday. Rice University political analyst Mark Jones expects the GOP to drive the issue because political maps can be drawn without federal oversight. This is probably going to be the most hyperpartisan re just 15 cycle in recent memory. In part because we no longer have the guard rails of Section five of the Voting rights Act. Whichever maps end up getting approved, are almost certain to be challenged in court. The first lawsuit is brought against a Texas doctor accused of violating the state's new abortion law. A doctor who openly flaunted the six week ban and wrote about it in the Washington Post is being sued. "Saying we actually all came from doing stop punk and reggae. And you know we never really set out with the intention to be a soul band. But i think that had a big part to do with me not really understanding who. I was just as a vocalist. And as i got older i learned that no matter what i think over. I'm a soul singer. And so once i got that hurdle i realized. Okay you know. People are going to put this label on us back and a large part of it has to do with my voice as if i'm singing over punk. They're going to be like new punk band if i'm hanging over country country solo artist. You know so. I've gotten over. You know letting genres define me and as i get older i more of a focus on just singing and getting better with my bandmates. And we're at the tail end of wrapping up our third record right now and none of it. Sounds like anything from our first or second. Release however i feel like fans of our newsmaker still gonna love it in a large part has to do with us just being ourselves which is naturally so full. That's such an important thing for all of us in our lives is whatever it is you do find your voice find what what works for you and not worry so much about labels right yes have have. You always had a passion for music. I have my father was a singer. My grandmother's saying a lot of my cousin. Saying i got my start singing at age. Five in public I went to church with my mom. And the pastor at our church had this sunday music program with all the little kids and so he put the microphone in front of each kid and kind of how to call and response going and then when the microphone got to me. I did it give it back to him and i just went on as if it were my concert that i been waiting to give my whole little five year old life so since then it's just been Music and figuring out how to get better at it figuring out how to grow within it and how to make it a career. How much does does houston and the gulf coast. Influence your music and your bands music. I was say completely from i in honestly because we've spent such a long time touring yes you know. We've contest amazing places and We've met some some beautiful and wonderful people. However the diversity exists within houston the culture. The kindness and the opportunity is something that i feel constantly inspires us to a point. Where even though you know my friends that live here you know would be like oh camp nights but she can be a bit. Sassy whatever you know. I leave plexus. Everyone thinks we're like some kind of like disney angel wonder band or something and and i realize it's because we're just naturally nice we're just not jerks and so that energy translates and it's it kind of spoiled me as far as how i interact with people and so i try to let the low that constantly emotes from my time in houston channel into my lyrics and The band i most of them really having gotten gotten their teeth in the scene here in. Houston i feel like that. Just all translates into what we do. And when you listen to us you hear. Houston you hear the gulf. Coast not jerks. I don't think you've quite caught on. I don't think you've captured what the music lifestyle is supposed to be. That's cam franklin lead singer. The suffers we spoke last august as we heard earlier. This make music. Not just singing. Along to the hits he recorded as a solo artist. Or is the front man for. Ben folds five but also in improvisations. He performs when he plays alongside major symphonies. I asked ben folds about his unique approach to the piano and developing. Ben folds five sound. I i heard one of your songs played on a college radio station. Back in nineteen ninety-five it was the the song brick from whatever mets six day after christmas. Throw some clothes on our that. Prompted me to buy the album. When i popped in the cd. The first thing i heard. Was you wailing away on the piano on one angry dwarf into hundred solemn faces. I had never heard someone attacked the piano quite like that before. Where did you learn to play like that. Well i was at first. And when i was a kid i really loved these old little richard records bam bam. That was before my time. But when i was a kid those records were available and my mother had stack forty five them all the time. Only richard people living crap out of the later on always held the elton john record eleven. Seventeen seventy a live record piano bass drums as the gold standard for how you would rock on the piano. You know in the nineties. No one was playing piano dot com. You know what if we can do this for the grunge era. That would be pretty cool. So that was what we wanted to do. A song like brick was an afterthought this happened with elton. to it happens with all.

"Craig thank you and Glad to be here honored to be here And thanks for what. Y'all do every day at the campus of uh And sending out information to our community. So i appreciate. What are the trends. We've experienced violent crime over the last year especially. Yeah just as many other major cities. I hear echo in. I'm sorry but we'll go forward. But just as other major cities we are experiencing an increase in homicides and also aggravated assaults Involved in handguns. We're at forty two percent increase from this time last year two hundred and twenty homicides Pretty alarming but again Other major cities are seven experience with some of the same numbers as well any idea. What's behind these trends. Well let's look at Harris county a lot of people don't know and don't realize natural disasters we hurricane harvey rolling here a few years ago and wrecked our entire criminal justice complex no trials and then something name covert nineteen rolled into not only our city kit the whole world pandemic files so two years holly no trials so we're backed up hundred thousand jury trials are are court processes that need to get through our court system. That's one problem okay. Look at the social services that have been closed down over over the last two years as well. You have a lot of domestic violence. You have street violence. You have individuals that normally traditionally wouldn't be committing crimes. So it's it's a number of things but the question is what do we do about. It and the police can't do it alone. Everybody has to pull in there together. I've been really clear about this. And i'm not gonna be one that points saying that other plots of the criminal justice system we all need to come together and see collectively. How do we dig out of this whole. How do we suppress Some of this violence. I'm gonna tell you. We have to put the very violent the very few individuals that committed violent crime out the violent crime. We have to come up with a plan. Collective plan in houston harris county to identify and get those individuals into court and then to jail period. Let's dive right into some calls. We have berry on the line for midtown barry. What's your question for chief. Inner yes go ahead chief. I'm not hearing him. Scream from the rooftops law and order but quick questions. One that bind to the broken windows theory. That smallest of crime encouraged times. Does he gonna get rid of the sanctuary city daily eight commit crimes to be fair and before it and he support the reform bond law from state that people rexel crime as we. Violent crimes should not be out on bonnet. No time okay. There was a little bit of echo. I heard him say that abban reform and and if if you're saying that violent criminals shouldn't be out on the streets i totally agree with you but with regards to undocumented individuals in our city. They're not committing a whole lot of crimes. Okay but my measuring stick is the same for everybody documented undocumented our citizens if you're committing violent crime you go to jail and that's where should be but i'm not gonna just single out a group of people and saying immigrants are you know some other groups and saying well they're responsible for for all of island crime or a large number violent crime when they're not. I think we should be working with individuals because if you look at them. Grant population a large population here in houston harris county. We need them as witnesses. We need them as good complainants if if they're a victim of a crime so Again we all need to work together and make sure that we're doing everything. We can decrease a violent crime and not singling out groups of individuals when he's really not justified. His other question was whether you subscribe to the so-called broken window theory that that if you start to see smaller crimes in a community that it will over time lead to larger craps absolutely but you know what it's hard for me to plot right now because of covert and and what i described to you what happened With hurricane harvey the whole system the whole infrastructure because of those two events. really decimated. You know. I'll systems all around social assistance in in in in criminal justice systems alike so we do have to begin to reveal and you gotta look at broken with one. Those theories and rebuilding. Make sure that we go block by block and making sure that we're building healthy communities. And when i mean that viable employment good education support systems so I do understand what he's saying. But it's not gonna happen overnight. Liz is in houston heights and asks now that permit. Louis carry will go into effect on september first allowing texans to carry a handgun in public with no training or background check. What is the houston police department or the city doing to educate businesses that This is liz writing that they will need to post a new thirty dot o. Five sign in their entrance windows if they want to ensure that people carrying a gun without a permit. Don't enter we are. We talked about that last week. And we're going to do Some educational campaigns and and you should see that rolling. i Right away but a lot of people. Ask me as chief chief. How you feel about this new law is gonna hit september one. I don't think it's going to help us at all. We had a way that people could get apartment and carry but if you have to get driving license to drive a car my goodness shouldn't you be able to at least get apartment where you get some signs of some type of training to pack a gun. I don't think it's a good thing for major cities julie asks. How important is it for gun owners to keep their guns locked up both at home and in their cars. Well i think we ran. The numbers Last week and i don't have them in front of me. So i'm just kinda going off of memory but i think that we're over sixteen thousand four hundred Incidents where they were Taken out of out of vehicle so That that's that's something that we really. We really need to educate owners gun on owners by safe. If you're going to have that that gun in the car please get safe. And and and and secured some kind of way and if you have home care a gun in into your home and security in the home as well and safety for the kids. That's that's gonna be in the home we're talking with houston police. Chief troy thinner. We welcome your for the chief at talk at houston matters.
