"They go into public service. Think of the millions who are public school teachers, local police officers, workers at local charities. Members of the military and the National Guard. Biden says not increase inflation because it will be paid for by the inflation reduction act, but Bloomberg's Anna Wong says it may make a difference. You look at the forecast currently in the market about where inflation would be next year. Many people think that it will fall back to three or even two. So if you add .1 to .4 percentage point to that, it's a pretty big difference. And now this is a campaign promise fulfilled for mister Biden. And the president has won a case now filed by the Department of Justice against Idaho, the state of Idaho, saying that doctors could not be held liable or prosecuted for performing abortions warranted by an emergency. Now, this is developing, so we'll get you more as the day goes on. Tropical storm Ana is skirting closer to Hong Kong, the observatory says about 200 kilometers south southwest, but it is moving in, says that it is expected to bring showers and may bring some violent wind gusts. It has a signal 8 warning in effect, but says it expects it could lower it sometime between 9 and 11, but it's too late for the morning session, which at the very least has been delayed. And Hong Kong says it can not rule out further limits on social distancing if the case COVID numbers continue to rise. The health department says the current situation is a rising trend and is worried about the healthcare capacity. And congressional report that Donald Trump pressed the FDA to reauthorize the drug hydroxychloroquine after the clearance had been revoked because the risks outweighed the benefits. The report says it was one of several drugs pushed by Trump. In San Francisco, Ahmed Baxter, this is Bloomberg, right? Juliet. Thank you so much. Ed, let's get to our guest Jim McAfee is joined head of apec equity research at Nomura joining us from Hong Kong. Obviously want to get your outlook for Asian stocks, but on the broad macro pictures we're awaiting from Jackson for Jackson hole and what we're going to hear from J pal. The key point here is to whether or not we have seen peak inflation and just how hawkish Jay Powell is going to be. What do you expecting? Okay, well I think it's not so much the U.S. inflation picture at that point of discussion. It's what's going on in the rest of the world. Be mindful that this meeting will be populated from central bankers from other geographies. And we saw this week that inflation in the UK inflation in Europe is approaching or has gone through double digits. So this, I think, is going to be quite impactful for how decisions are made and what sort of time frame we're going to get for interest rate hikes. And in terms of that time frame and then all that weighs through into the dollar and the impact two on Asian equities do we continue to see that dollar strength and how does that kind of change your view here? Well, I think that the major currency we watched quite carefully at Nomura is the Japanese yen. And so far this year, the yen has been weak Vis-à-vis the dollar and much of that can be explained by the size of the bank of Japan's governor Corona fan has made it clear that he wants inflation to get through that 2% target threshold. And that's beginning to be achieved despite that achievement. There is no indication from the DoJ that there is intention to increase rates. Now one thing that may be an outlier which may happen at the beginning of next year is the Corona sign will resign as the Central Bank governor in Japan. He will then have a successor appointed and I think the market will be thinking does that successor abandon this zero interest rate policy and start thinking about normalizing in line with what's happening in western economies and that could result in some of the strength we think. The other key point is China's economy and we've been seeing more measures here to try and stabilize that. It didn't kind of be, it wasn't really reflected. I should say in market action, particularly when you look at property players this week, what further kind of moves are needed from authorities and do you think we've seen peak China pessimism? I think the thing in the market is looking for is some opening up in terms of the COVID restrictions. In this part of the world that I'm in Hong Kong right now, it's incredibly difficult to travel around the region relative to traveling in Europe. And going back to Japan before we touched on China. In Japan, Japan has restricting arrivals just to 20,000 per day. That's down 80% of what Japan was at its peak pre COVID. And in the case of China, China has many, many policy tools and it's also in order to we might have

"It's happening, right? I just don't know that. It doesn't get worse. And then it gets better and then it gets worse. And then it gets better. So here's the thing about the tropical storm for the past seven years, named storms have arrived ahead of the official June 1st. The official June 1st start of hurricane season. Including this year with Tropical Storm Ana, which formed in May. 23rd and last year tied 2016 is the hottest year recorded by humans. Record. 30 named storms, including six major hurricanes formed up I found it had a lot to do with El Nino years and La Nina years. Yeah, well, that's all part of the environment. The climate Uh, you know, maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't. I don't know. But, uh People are saying the climate. A climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said, Uh The main warming meaning like average, not exactly, But, you know, average warming in this region so far has been between two and four. F. He's talking about the Pacific Northwest. And the West Coast, he said. I think it's fair to say that at a minimum climate change contributed at least that much to the severity of this heat wave. We're in Litton, British Columbia. It was a scorching 121 degrees on Tuesday. We talked about that on Wednesday and said, Look at this place in British Columbia, where it was 121. It doesn't exist anymore. And then they had a wildfire that swept through the town. Mayor Joep Alderman told CBC News. The town burnt down He said. The whole thing went, he said. 90% of Litton was lost in the fire, One resident says are poor little town is gone. This is so devastating. We're all in shock. They lost everything. I've never been able to make the connection between wildfires and And the weather and heat. I understand lot of them have started by people, right? Sometimes started by lightning lightning by cars by people throwing cigarette butts out the window. The idea that it's so hot, you know, well, it's like a tinderbox spontaneously combusts. It's kind of silly, but but also I don't know in California if they manage their forests like they should. You know, that's the subject of controversy has been for many years. Being the subject of controversy. Kamala Harris is getting some seriously bad press this week. And it has less to do with politics as a way that her members of her own staff say they're being treated. Yeah, Some people are calling it a very chaotic operation. Harris's team reportedly experiencing low morale. Four lines of communication. And diminish trust among aides and senior officials. Most of the blame being placed on Chief of staff Tina Flournoy. So the vice president also takes a fair share of of criticism. Story relies on interviews with 22 current and former vice presidential aides, administration officials and other associates. Say that Flournoy in an attempt to protect Harris has created an environment in which suggestions are ignored or harshly dismissed and decisions get bogged down, and one anonymous source said. People are thrown under the bus from the very top. There are short fuses. It's an abusive environment. It's not a healthy environment and people feel mistreated. On the flip side of all this. There are many defenders of Harris and Flournoy, who say that women in power, particularly black women, like them are often held two different, unfair standards. Harris spokesperson. We always have to turn it into a race thing, right and and a female thing now. Well, sometimes I mean, you know, females are considered the B word when men are just What's the word I'm looking for? Um I don't know. I understand what you're saying. You know, I don't see how that has anything to do with this that they're set to unfair standards. Simone Sanders rejects the negative portrayal, saying We're not making rainbows and bunnies all day. What I hear is that people have hard jobs, and I'm like Welcome to the club. It could just be. "I think I asked if these storms are coming earlier and getting stronger. Andrew was back in the very early nineties, and at the time there was a strong El Nino that was in effect. So what happens during an El Nino year for the Atlantic Sea surface temperatures are very minimal and wind share values begin. With Andrew. That year was particularly cool in all of the Atlantic, so a lot of people became what I like to call hurricane amnesia that they don't recognize that you're still vulnerable. Even if the hurricane season isn't starting until late August that significance. A lot of people were caught off guard with Andrew. And plus it evolved and grew so rapidly. And we can get into this for hours. But there were a lot of forecast that we're wrong, saying that it would turn before it would hit the Florida coastline. But now let's go all the way to where we are now seven consecutive years, and it's including this year that we have seen an early start to the hurricane season. Hurricane season generally runs from Jean first all the way to November 30th because during this time period these are the prime conditions form sea surface temperatures, minimal vertical wind share. You know the story Prior to these months we see cooler temperatures were coming out of winter, and it takes time for the ocean to warm up. Well, we just saw sub Tropical Storm Ana form northeast of Bermuda just a few days ago. And sea surface temperatures are already prime for additional activity. We're looking at sea surface temperatures that are already over 80 degrees in parts of the Gulf of Mexico and in the Caribbean. So to give you a sense of what an average hurricane season is. It has changed. Unfortunately, over the past year, so it is a little bit different for 2021 coming in. In 2020. We were still using the old 30 year. Statistical data set that hurricane forecasters YouTube's during an average hurricane year and this still included the year that Hurricane Andrew impacted. We would generally see in the Atlantic 12 named storms, six of which would become hurricane so wind speeds of at least 74 MPH. Category one to Category five. Three would be major hurricanes. Category three and higher Now with 2021. We have a new 30 year data set that starts from 1991 and goes to 2020. We're now increasing our names. Storms by two. So 14 named storms for an average hurricane yer seven hurricanes. That's an addition of one from the previous set and still three major hurricanes. Yes, we have seen a change in an increase in hurricane activity over the past 30 years. A lot of it can be related to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. It's an oscillation that occurs every 30 years, and it involves two cycles positive and a negative cycle. Positive cycle, which we have been in since 1995 shows an increase in sea surface temperatures, minimal vertical wind share and that allows for an increase in hurricane activity. This was seen back in the fifties and the sixties was another spike in activity before we went then into a negative cycle for the seventies and eighties. Not a lot of hurricane activity when you're looking at the stats of those hurricanes during those years. 1995 comes along. We're back into this very active period. And we could be stuck in this period until the 19 thirties.

"And our guest today is Dr Athena, Mass. In a meteorologist and hurricane specialist at the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network at the University of Florida. We are talking about the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season and how science is helping predict where these storms might go and how strong they might be. Earlier, Dr Madison talked about Hurricane Andrew. That storm was began with a obviously the first storm of the season. And it hit the U. S Coast in late August. When Dr Madison and I recorded our conversation, it was May 26 a tropical storm had already formed in the Atlantic. I asked if these storms are coming earlier and getting stronger. Andrew was back in the very early nineties, and at the time there was a strong El Nino that was in effect. So what happens during an El Nino year for the Atlantic Sea surface temperatures are very minimal and wind share values begin to increase, both of which do not favor the development of hurricanes. Hurricanes like it very warm, Very tropical sea surface temperatures need to be at least 80 F and warmer and minimal vertical wind shear in the atmosphere so that these thunderstorms can progress and grow into the higher layers of the atmosphere.
