I think this is what ultimately might have gotten to the president. And then also non-political type saying that and CEO's of the airlines jet blue. I think the delta CEO commented have said, hey, we're a couple of weeks away from the system being crippled or a potential partial collapse. And I don't think Trump wanted that on his watch because he would fall on him. You couldn't push that off on Chuck Schumer, and and Nancy Pelosi. But again, the president today could have and should have said that we're having these air traffic issues, and we're reaching a critical mass. He could have said that this is too taxing for the department of homeland security in the FBI, the president could have said that the border patrol, for instance, is stretched too thin because of the furloughs could've said that the economic impact too high. He could have said that because of. National security and public safety. And that is his top priority. That's why he wants a wall to begin with. But that's why he's opening the government backup because of national security, and I had said this earlier in the week that here, I agree with the president on national security border security and having a physical wall in many, hundreds of miles to augment other types of border security, but imagine if there were a catastrophic event either terroristic event a mid air collision because of stress the air traffic controllers. So you know, what thirty four days in much too long already. It's unreasonable and it's reckless air. Traffic controllers main job is to prevent planes from hitting each other. Yes, that is given them turns giving them climbs and descents to miss other planes. They need to be focused on doing that job. One hundred percent of the time. They shouldn't be driving for Uber before their shift. They shouldn't be waiting tables. They should be getting. Rested fatigue, matters stress matters. They're not sleeping at night now because they're worried about not just the paycheck. They've missed and the next one they're going to miss tomorrow. But how long is this going to go on are they going to have to sell their house? So they going to have to sell cars or they're going to have to keep their children out of college. What are they they don't have any idea when they're going to get their life back? Their life is on hold and they're making day to day decisions for something that they did not ask to be part of their political pawns in a reckless game of chicken, and they need to be pulled out of that game. They need to be able to do their job and do it with one hundred percent of the people that are furloughed that need to be there to support them quality assurance specialist training specialist airspace procedures people..

Because what the establishment has done to Brexit is exactly what the swamp would like to do to Donald Trump. If you remember the people in the United Kingdom voted to exit the European Union, the people of the United Kingdom. So we don't want to be ruled by a collection of elites from other European countries in some distant capital that are not us. So they voted to withdraw from the European Union from the moment that happened British elites have been trying to sabotage it. They've been trying to undermine it. They have delayed further votes. They've delayed programs coming up at policies on how to actually do it. It has been obvious from the get-go that this that this vote by the people was being undermined. This hasn't been difficult to see all this. Brexit vote was two years ago. They're still not out and they can't come up with a plan for getting up. So the Prime Minister Theresa may came up with a plan that ostensibly followed through on what United Kingdom voters voted for. I get out of the European Union. So he created a plan. That essentially did not pull the UK out of the EU extensively. Did. But it was not designed to pass the true backers of Brexit. Would vote against it as well. As the leftists who wanted to stay in the European Union. That's exactly what happened her plan suffered the largest lopsided defeat in parliament in British history. And after the vote Theresa May agreed to hold a no confidence vote on Wednesday. That's today. But the kicker is that she probably gonna win that vote because she's actually done what everybody in the establishment wanted. And that is all they wanted was to delay and delay and delay and screw up Brexit so much that it'll never happen. And that's what she did under the guise of trying to follow through on the will of the people. It is it is a microcosm of what the left is attempting to do with the Russian investigation. The Muller investigation to undermine Trump and to nullify the twenty sixteen election, the the equivalent of of stalling the Brexit vote would be impeaching Trump. And the elites of both countries. Are attempting here to deny the will of a majority of voters it really interesting more complicated than that. Now, you may have heard that that Theresa May was simply trying to do what the voters are the UK wanted. She was trying to come up with a plan got a Brexit because that's what the voters wanted. But nobody in the elite establishment wants to get out of the European Union. They all opposed the whole Brexit idea. And they're in the process of undermining it I mentioned earlier, ladies and gentlemen, CNN's trying to scare the hell out of people. Airplanes are going to start falling out of the sky. Traffic controllers are having a drive Uber's and so forth in their spare time I happen to think this is the height of irresponsibility. And I'm just going to tell you point blank, Donald Trump can win this. If he hangs on it's going to be a few more weeks. It's going to be risky. But I actually folks I really believe that if he hangs on and continues down this road at at some point there's going to be a shift in public opinion. And the vast majority of the American people are going to end up with him on this. If he hangs in there. He's got a good start. There's all kinds of really good long overdue things happening that we've wanted to have like ninety five percent of the EPA furloughed. A lot of nonessential government workers on furlough. This is exactly what we've wanted to de-emphasis of government. The shrinking of government illustration of the of the redundancy in the number of people and policies and so forth. The idea that people can function that their lives can go on even in the midst of a partial government shutdown. Can just hang on a few more weeks. There's one more on this. Poppy, Harlow the info babe at CNN following up on the dire. Warning that we're just days away from airplanes falling out of the sky Trish, that flying is less safe today than it was a month ago. I would say it is less safe today than it was month ago. Absolutely. We do not have the professionals on the job. We are working with barebones crews. This is a horrible game of chicken that were in the middle of. And we need to get out of it today. You said it all you said fine is less safe now than it was a month ago. That is the thing every American and every member of congress and in the White House should be thinking a lot about. I don't think a plane crashing upset these people to you. I know it's a heck of a thing to say, but. This is this is Trump was elected to disrupt we have a major disruption of all kinds of things that have not been good for the people of this country. It's a it's a it's a really great start. It's gonna be hard because this is the kind of stuff that's going to be in the media over and over and over and over again, people dying people choose between insulin and our mortgage people running out of food people running out of the horror stories are going to intensify. They're never gonna end it largely most of them are going to be exaggerated or made up. And Pelosi here trying to cancel a state of the union that is one of the greatest opportunities that she has presented. She got a close the house chamber. Tell Trump is just not we don't have enough security to do this. Let's come up with a different date winless shutdown over into Trump should just find an alternative place if she's not going to host it. If the house is not going to invite him in welcoming, and he can do it anywhere. He wants and he can call it whatever he wants. But he can give the state of the union. He can do it with a friendly crowd. Read in a bunch of freshmen Democrats protesting and mooning and probably hanging up a bunch of protest signs of the house chamber shouting at him who needs any of that? I got an Email rush the week you came back from your two week vacation you talked about apple and the plunging stock price, and you never talked about it. And I'm curious what you think about apple. And the fact that eleven million people chose to replace their batteries in phones rather than get new phones. You know, this actually is a. It's an instructive thing in and of itself apple was blindsided by this. Let me give you a brief history of what this was. Apple had begun throttling. The processors this is via software. You weren't aware. It was happening. They were throttling processors in phones that were eighteen months older and older. The reason is battery degradation batteries wear out. They start to lose their efficiency and their power after a year and in a year and a half something seriously and people in that circumstance too often were encountering phones that would just temporarily shut down and restart. Or shut down permanently and require manual restart. All because the battery had lost enough power that it could not drive the processor as designed. So apple was throttling. The process and meaning they were slowing down the speeds of the central processing unit another things. So as not to cause the battery to shut down the phone. Well, this led to people accusing apple of doing this on purpose to make people think their phones were wearing out. So that they would replace them in buy new ones, and they may have been I don't know. But that was such a bad PR hit. They couldn't withstand that that. At the beginning of two thousand eighteen they announced a special one time battery replacement program price of twenty nine dollars normally replace a battery in an iphone you're gonna spend depending on the phone from say sixty to eighty bucks, but they offered anybody who wanted to replace. A phone battery the opportunity do it by December thirty first two thousand eighteen at twenty nine bucks. So the year goes on. And apparently, there's not a very big increase in the number of people taking advantage of the program. The number of people change their batteries in an apple iphone every year is between one and a half million. That's the average and people were not replacing batteries it anywhere near at increased rates over that. Then apple announces their new phones. Three new phones in September. And october. And by the time, November December came around eighteen million additional or seventeen million additional iphone owners decided to switch batteries. Instead of by new phones. Now ample had already issued their quarterly projection their guests. So what the Christmas quarter would be. And they didn't see a whole lot of people taking advantage of the battery replacement program because it didn't start 'til after their phones came out. So what essentially has happened is apple got blindsided by this. The majority of the eleven million people who switched batteries waited until December to take advantage of it because the program expired at the end of this number this is long after apple it issued its next quarter guidance to Wall Street. Up until December only usual one to two million people and replace batteries during two thousand eighteen so the problem for apple is twofold. Ten million or so people decided they didn't like the new iphones that were announced in September and October and didn't buy them. Facility. So now when you shut down the pipeline, meaning hiring stopped and training. Stop for the most part. You don't have that new pipeline coming in to relieve this this very short staff workforce. In addition to that, we have about two thousand eligible to retire right now out of a very small workforce ten thousand five hundred which I mentioned was a thirty year low if they were to decide to retire immediately following the shutdown because many of them aren't able to to do that right now because there aren't people in place to process their paperwork, then we can then we feel the effects of being short staffed the effects for the flying public on that when we are so critically staff is capacity. They'll start to see delays when we're not able to staff our radar rooms in our towers across the country, they'll put less planes in the air, they'll they'll keep them further and further apart. So they passengers will start to see delays system, potentially very negative consequences. If this keeps going your association has been very vocal about believing that this shutdown is a bad thing. He says he might invoke emergency powers to order construction of a wall at the US Mexico border. The fact is that the total number of people believed to cross each year is far down from historic highs. That is true despite an increase recently. But here's how the president described the border situation over the weekend. And we have an absolute crisis and criminals in gang members thumbing through it is national security. It's a national merge. So do emergency powers. Let him order a wall here to help answer that question is NPR White House. Correspondent Scott Horsely, Scott. Good morning. Good morning, Steve. So what are the president's emergency powers? The president does have some power under the national emergencies act to shift money from say one account the defense department to another this is designed to give him flexibility to deal with an. Urgent situation. It's not designed to cut congress out of the budgeting process. Okay. So does the president alone? Get to decide when there is an emergency. That would allow them to do this. He is allowed to do that. But he is expected to inform congress and if he were to try to use his emergency powers in this situation. It would almost certainly invite a legal challenge. Oh, okay. So there is some question there as to whether he has that kind of authority, but he can at least start the process. So is it clear that these powers would then allow him to shift that money from one budget one budget pod to another as you say in order to order construction of all lots of questions would come up, for example, which military project would he leave unfunded in order to move that money over to wall construction? And how would a wall actually addressed the real situation we're confronting at the border, which is a surge of asylum seekers in family groups coming from Central America, most of whom turn themselves in to border patrol agents. Oh, the now this is an interesting point that you're making your Scott there. Multiple problems multiple complications at the border, and this wall doesn't necessarily address the one that has made news recently, you're saying, that's right. So this is all a backdrop in a sense to a discussion over these negotiations to reopen. The government the president has said he will not sign routine spending bills that would open parts of the government that had been closed for a number of weeks now unless he gets some kind of funding for this border wall. There were talks over the weekend. The two sides make any progress. No, not really. In fact, the president said on Sunday before those talks even began that he didn't really expect them to this was more political theater than actual negotiation. One thing we did see though is the White House put into writing its budget asked. That's something the Democrats had been seeking they want five point seven billion dollars for Trump's wall, which the president now says can be made from steel not concrete. Okay. That would be enough to build two hundred thirty four miles of barrier. And that's works out about twenty four million dollars a mile. In addition, the administration is asking for hundreds of millions of additional dollars to build more detention beds to hire more. Border patrol agents and immigration judges to install new drug detection technology at the ports of entry and to deal with what it says is a humanitarian crisis. You know? It's really interesting, Scott Horsely. It sounds like some of the items on that list are things that a lot of Democrats would sign onto like more immigration judges just to give one example. It's the wall. The symbolism of the wall that is sticking point here the symbolism and the five point seven billion dollars, and when will more members of the public began to feel the effects of the shutdown which federal workers are already feeling you know, it is mounting day by day. There's some talk now that tax refund checks could be delayed. If this stretches on much longer, we are starting to hear anecdotal reports of sick outs by TSA agents, and that's causing longer lines at at airports. This Friday is supposed to be payday for the federal workers. So if it's not so by then that would be the first time, those eight hundred thousand federal employees would actually miss a paycheck. Scott Horsely said there one area that is being hit hard by the shutdown airports. You may have seen footage of those long lines. You may have experienced them the airline Pilots Association has written President Trump critical letter in it. The group urged the president to take steps to immediately end the shutdown that is quote adversely affecting the safety of our national airspace system and the national air traffic. Controllers association is also calling for an end to what it calls an unacceptable shutdown Trish Gilbert is the executive vice president of that group. She's with me now in studio, thanks for coming in. Thank you Noel. So how are air traffic control is being affected by the partial government shutdown? The profession is requires a workforce that is highly skilled and highly trained needs to be focused one hundred percent of the time and this uncertainty around and this threat to their livelihood is making it very very difficult for them to. To continue forward. If this indeed will become months, if not years as was previously reported, they they're they're people just like you and me they have obligations to meet. And and that's concerning when they don't know when they're going to receive their next paycheck. In addition to that support structure is not there. They're all furloughed. So just like you wouldn't send a surgeon in without his support her support team, you shouldn't expect air traffic controllers to Kenya continue to do their job without the support structure in place to support what what is very important for the United States economy, which is the movement of aircraft point eight to point B and doing it safely. So those were done disease are being pulled away with the shutdown occurring day after day after day, and and that is going to cause harm to the system. And even when we do eventually come out of the shutdown. There will be a lot of things that have to be done and effects that will be felt for many many months afterwards should travelers be worried about their safety. I mean, air traffic control as you mentioned. This is a very serious job. You don't want distracted. People. You don't want people calling out sick. I mean is this something that that your average person flying needs to worry about right now? Well, I don't think there's a safety concern at the moment, we are concerned about the redundancies being pulled away and not being in place. And when you pull those away eventually something's going to give. So we have concerned there. We also have redundancies being peeled away. What do you mean? There are some there's some level of security in each in each step that an air traffic controller takes and so what I mean with redundancies. I mean, our inspections aren't occurring trainings not occurring the quality assurance. Teams aren't onsite to make sure that that all of those things that are normally placed in this very complex a system that we run that that those are the redundancies I'm talking about in addition to that we are at a thirty year, low and staffing fully certified controller. So we're already working overtime in most of our facilities, especially in our very high complex and heavy traffic. Facilities. So now when you shut down the pipeline, meaning hiring stopped and training. Stop for the most part. You don't have that new pipeline coming in to relieve this this very short staff workforce. In addition to that, we have about two thousand eligible to retire right now out of a very small workforce ten thousand five hundred wartime mentioned was a thirty year low if they were to decide to retire immediately following the shutdown because many of them are able to to do that right now because there aren't people in place to process their paperwork, then we can then we feel the effects of being short staffed the effects for the flying public on that when we are so critically staff is capacity. They'll start to see delays when we're not able to staff our rooms in our towers across the country, they'll put less planes in the air, they'll they'll keep them further and further apart. So they passengers will then start to see delays system, potentially very negative consequences. If this keeps going your association has been very vocal about believing that this shutdown is a bad thing. Have you heard from the White House? Have you heard from congress has anyone gotten in touch with him? And said we hear your concerns we've heard from congress that they hear our concerns and we've heard from from both sides of the aisle, both the house and the Senate as well. They we believe they are trying to figure this out. Unfortunately, it time is critical. And we need them to do what they can't negotiate a resolution in this shutdown now, our employees in the members that we represent because our employees at knack are also affected without support as well that they need to not be held hostage to this shutdown. They need to be able to do their job. And then they need to be able to be compensated for the job. They are doing will. They get back pages. Quickly, those that are working definitely will at some point get their back pay those that are furloughed.
