Good St. I used to go out with a girl. Steve. Apparently everyone liked it because she was hitting fifty members of week. Maybe shatter own version of the fifty mission cap and on the subject of the Leafs. I'm so pleased. They're out. You predicted the blue team to win it all this year. So I'm doubly glad that again the blue team that I hate is out. And you're totally wrong. Now, I did last night. I did a special mini bonus episode of the project felt like the anti leaf nation demanded it and so when head and did that very, and you can actually still I mean, obviously, it's up there as episode number nineteen just sitting there waiting for you. But yeah, did a little of that. But you and I have not talked about it. And I thought it was absolutely fantastic theatre. It couldn't it couldn't have been any better for you was it that the trolley dotted eliminated. The problem. I had was that. I didn't get to see as much as of it as I'd like. Because while I'm in the middle of the game. Remember, the vehicle that I was fixing up the other day getting all the rust taken off of it. And I'm covering all this Bondo, and this Gooby gone, and I do a couple of shows ago in that state, well that very vehicle unfortunately, had a family member last night who went out and got in a Fender bender with it. So I missed a big chunk of the blue team's ultimate demise. Oh, no Ono. Everything's everyone's safe. All good. Just a Fender bender. I got a daughter is the worst driver in the world every every every week or two she's scraping up against some parked car. You know, bumping into the one in front of her shit like that, you know, my mother. My mother was the worst driver in the world. Steve I would go home to visit her in Ottawa. She had her car parked in a little single garage that they have in his townhouse in hunt club, and she was awful shoes off. 'cause when you get really old they they don't actually turn their head around to check while they're backing up, you know, and I'm so I jumped in the car with my mom in the garage. And I'm looking at the rear view mirrors the casing on the river mirrors has a bunch of yellow paint on it on the site. And her her garages Trimdon paint, the trim around the garage doors trimmed paint, and she's backing up she scraping this thing gets the trim. And she's she's going. I don't know what all that is on the side of the mirrors. You know? I don't know if someone hit me. No, no, you're you're you're driving into the side of the garage. You know, stop it. She tried to back out of her stride to back out of her driveway. One time it's like ten in the morning. I'm with her and they lived on a on a like a little horseshoes street, you know, a little cul de sacs radio. And there's no traffic. There's no traffic at all. And that she's backing up. There's a car coming down the road that you would normally just let drift by Steve. And then you would proceed backing out of your driveway. So my mother sees this car about twenty five yards away from her coming down the road. She goes, I think I can beat that. Right. Rips the current reverse and full on T-Bone Jaguar heartbe across. Oh, yeah. Terrible. Terrible drivers. But one of the great NFL prognosticators of our time. Certainly I think I still get asked about every once in a while like was that for real? She's absolutely one of the best NFL prognosticators like Jimmy the Greek on steroids Levin and one she went in for three games a week. I four weeks Levin one against the spread unheard of. It's a joke. She didn't become more famous than she did while she was she she's to get upset because she'd walk, you know, she's nailed these NFL picks and she'd walk through her Gulf Cup gonna play bridge. And all these men would run out her saying, what do you think of this game berry? What did they? She had no idea. What are you gotta listen Fridays. Friday, mornings K before we jump in in earnest. I wanna remind everybody that were sponsored by faces magazine. There are title sponsor next month's issue. Now, you have another game against the team that you are far superior to. How do you come out what kind of energy? Do you bring like? The not got beat them by Alonso tonight. I totally agree. Rebound down to Millsaps. Whistle foul on the floor after the shot. In that is going to be against Osman. I believe on jetty. Yeah. Interesting call too because he he seemed like he had position there on Paul Millsap with the box out, but the nuggets game possession, Tori. Craig looks in shock clock. Reset a fourteen Denver will have another crack at lobs. It into cola yoga yoga's gerbils around the perimeter hand off the Murray turns the corner gets the pay turn around fadeaway nine hundred jumper is. Scrapped the scoreboard cursor on top here. Throws it the paint digits hook shot is on the way in in areas. The nuggets to focus on defensively tonight is in the paint. That's where the Cavs to score. They're not as strong Upendra teams. They're going to try and get easy buckets. Inside Murray has it on the high right side it out there by chain inside the arc Obita cola. Yokich Yokich Murray Murray one on one with pain here on the shot clock coastal stops. Whistle offense of foul on Murray. I'm not sure I saw. Our smaller hers. First Fallon Jamal Cleveland basketball, coming back the other way to look at the replay here. I mean, not down the lane Sexton, reverse layup. No good. But a foul on Denver. And that'll be two free throws. I'm sorry. That was Cameron Payne. Not Sexton free throws coming up here. For is a very big difference between handling physicality and just moving within the flow of the offense and having an offensive foul there. And I think Jamal was driving on a on a defender that was being very physical with him. Has Tony the call that exactly say that a lot number one for the lefty that one is no good. Now, the sweat Cianci Murray defending six five on the timer baseline step back. Martin's jumper is missed a week Cycorp pulled by Clark quickly ended up front court. Zach bell has his shot. Josh Martin who was not going to allow Zach doorbell the dunk on the Broncos in the opening minute and forty three seconds Martin. But Josh racing back. We'll send Norville to the line. Josh Martin way to wake everybody up in the gym. Well, normally that's an easy dunk. It is it is he looked like he had a clear lane and Josh back and. Wow. That was way up there. I mean the refs called it. I think it's fifty fifty. You got a whole lot of all thought beautiful block just branded Clark can jump out of the gym Josh Martin. I think just showed folks here at Spokane. He's equal to the task at least early here. First free throws missed Norville makes the second. And sometimes when you're a referee pay the contact, and you call it, even though there, it's a clean block. And that's unfortunate full court pressure Taiji dribble and get to the front court after the passer trae words and a foul is touch jumps into the air double team by patchy Moore and Perkins near half court and the foul will be an Josh Perkins. And that'll be perkins's. I and Gonzaga's we talked about trying to speed up the pace a little three quarter court press, they had EDNA trap. And hachi morale builders bail this out with the foul. It's not as if players get out on the floor teams get out on the floor, and they're shocked at what they see from Gonzaga. Because a lot of what they see is on film. But as we said experience at first. Hand is a whole different story. Trae works has a floater right handed floater at trae works knocks down the basket. His first of the game. And the Broncos are on the board. It's three to g you. This is my first opportunity and watching trae play person. He was smart. He was in the mismatch. He went for the flop the rest spotted there at home that helps sack doorbell seventy points per game. Josh Perkins holding there's a screen and now spinning to the basket hachi Mer up and under William rather Willie Caruso, the true freshman for Naples, Italy, not much. He could do. I good news. Is he wasn't called for a foul foul on the spender was a little lost their he's discovering a whole 'nother level here. Five to to the score BULLDOGS lead. They have. Had an average margin of victory. Their last four games of forty three point seven five points and near turnover. Ball is loose Perkins. Picks it up. The front court behind the back to Boura and Josh Martin steps had brought achiever flying to the rent the dunk and Martin picks up the foul that is his second. And just like that herbs. To the bench for Keyshawn Justice. And really I mean, they talked about it at shoot around today to get back in transition d. Yeah. Absolutely. And Martin caught as the last man back twice now. But what started this whole thing was a turnover at the top of the key for the Broncos. We have got to avoid these at all costs because they launched into five five-second for second baskets the other way. So now, the Broncos will have three true freshman on the floor actually had before or correction. They had to on the floor. Now. Keyshawn Justice cubs in for Josh Martin first free throw by patchy Moore is good. Start at each and every game this year makes the second. Teashops not been playing like a freshman. The Broncos can do here. He's just to the patient on his drives really physical. Well, her upset at his seen. Not what he's wanted to see because I think he thinks Santa Clara can control the mistakes they're making right now. And we have a timeout sixteen nineteen remaining here in the first half from the McCarthy center. It's the BULLDOGS nine at the Broncos to we'll be back after this. This is Santa Clara basketball.

James, Fred Engelberg. I mean, I I know the name simply from his association with the mind-blowing Vietnam documentary hearts and minds, but he was obviously much more than that. Fred was very much a figure who associated himself with the counterculture the fifties. If you're in a number of sort of be movies and can't movies about the beats was a close friend of Ginsberg and a collaborator near locker. With a lot of the folk musicians around that scene and then released two solo folk records in the early nineteen sixties before relocating to Los Angeles in nineteen sixty three. So would these films originally have had some kind of sound accompaniment whether speech or him playing guitar or something like certainly part of where the trim been ascetic comes from the fact that. Fred himself was a fan of this sort of indeterminate strategies. And so Fred's earliest films were often intended a silent films, which he would then screen with accompaniment from vinyl records to his own folk music to found sounds that he was acquiring on magnetic tape, and all of these materials are now part of his collection and the name Trimdon trimbe was actually the name of angle production company, and it was the moniker under which he uttered, many many materials, and as we see at the beginning of his career, this meant everything from educational films to stock footage of rodeos to industrial commercial tapes. And then as the decade wore on by the late sixties Engelberg is increasingly politicized and acquiring footage of race riots of student protests of embedded and uninvited cinematographers during the Vietnam conflict. And so just as we've seen. Composers working with found sound he was working with kind of found visual elements. Absolutely. And and Michael for you guys as a band. I mean that lasted of music was kind of an example of fan sent right? You base that on a John Fahey piece? Yeah. And I think that influence comes from. Certainly from William who invited invited us to come and be part of this and and being a big fan of Williams guitar playing style, and it's and that particular John Fahey song sunflower verbally has just been a favorite of mine has that quality that I find so evocative and inspiring from Fahey, and as far as it being a found sound it was just sort of like we took the idea of this outsider American cultural provider. Sure, let's go for it. But now as as Quinn, Dr the two of you are named after another sort of big cultural content provider of the nineteen sixties. Right. Yeah. I mean Quinn. Dr is. Is the sound is the name of the the beeps? You would hear transmissions from the spacecraft to ground control mission control. This is, you know, late sixties science NASA technology, where they were, you know, I'm sure everybody has at least seen or most people have at least seen footage of Apollo launches. And there's just this gigantic room filled with machines and instruments and displays knobs and dials and meters and the Quin Dr box was literally a module that would plug in to this greater control panel. And it was in essence a an actual analog synthesizer that would generate two pitches. One was a transmission. And it would say, hey, are you there and the Quin Dr the sort of like companion Quinn, Dr box on the spacecraft would say, yes, I received your signal. Here's the confirmation signal and those are two different pitches. And I just thought that there's something beautiful about a synthesizer. Sort of singing into space. Are you there? And then someone says, yes, we're here. And as soon as I did, and I asked James about it, who's, you know, he's a very sort of learning academic historian about these sorts of things like now, what are those beeps called any like, you know, like three seconds ladies like those are called Quinn, Dr tones, and I was like, oh, well, there's the name of our group. Yeah. And this is what that group sounds like Quinn, Dr making up half of the trim been banned, James, Merle Thomas, and Michael Jorgensen also of the band Wilco. "Uh-huh. Started controlling chicken controls and then started feeling the at that point in time. And then it looked over and saw no pressure in the right engine. And that's when I realized that I had an engine till you not control. Welcome to another edition of there. I was a podcast where we put you in the cockpit with pilots in interesting situations, and we learn how they flew out of them. I'm your host, Richard McFadden. My co, Kristen Bodmer is on maternity leave Tyler, who's our guest this morning. All right. We have very special guests for our audience today, and that's our very own Mark Baker president and CEO of. Marcin flying for over thirty five years with more than ten thousand hours in the left seat and a commercial pilot certificate with single and multi-engine land and sea plane ratings. He's also got a rotorcraft rating and type ratings in the Cessna citation, five hundred and five twenty five pretty impressive history for shirt. Thanks Tyler. Let's listen into the hangar playing with Mark. Mark welcome. Thank you for joining us on there. I was podcast. Thanks Richard. Great to be here. Good to have you here. So you have flown owned over one hundred airplanes in your thirty five year flying career. An interesting. You've got ten thousand hours all of that in general aviation fly. Yes. I have what's fuel along the way, but it's great almost now forty years of flying and and have had the opportunity a lot of different variety of generally visionary plans still not satisfied that done them all, learn them all. But I, I have the question of trying find a way to touch just about every generalization your plane that's that's around in across the board views. Generally VA Shen in your business. You've commuted with it. You've done it for fun. You've done back country flying. You've done high altitude jet flying you. You've been across the spectrum and Joel aviation and used the airplanes for all they're meant to be used for. Yeah, this is the thing that is interesting is there is no one, perfect airplane, plano one, perfect kind of outcome. How user craft to the commute across the variety of life, but not to forget the the valuable. Just fun factor. Yeah. So all the airplanes you you've own, what's your favorites? Well, I've got a couple of favorites in again, depends what you're doing, but I've used my super cab. I've only a half dozen different super comes. But this one particular when I. Bought from the original owner bought new nineteen, fifty three. And I've had that airplane for nearly twenty five years had restored once floated from the bottom Mexico to the Hudson Bay, Florida, New York, all over the rocky mountains on everything from fatigue floats to wheels and snow skis. Yeah, great, great airplane, I'm a fan. I know you're. And so now you're in? Yeah. Well, I've always had an affinity for round engines. I've owned a number of airplanes with round engines. An I think that technology design in twenty. If you want to call it technology, the the big round, Pratt Whitney Motors and how good they are. I've owned a with the the ninety, five Pratt, and Whitney, which is twenty is on everything from beaver to currently. I a Howard beach eighteen thirteen thirteen forties on t. sixes over the years. And I even had a walk-o that had a, I remember around Jacobs on that one. So I have an affinity for the sound of round motor. Yeah, yeah. It is quite a sound. Certainly the romance of flight in that in those round engines. So Mark in all those airplanes you've owned in flown, can you talk just a little bit about transitioning from one airplane to another and and how do you do that in terms of to make sure you're the safest pilot, you can be whenever you step up or step over around. Into a different airplane. You know, I think it's a it. Served me well to talk to people that have been around that particular model have a lot of experience on ninety nine point, nine percents people share with you in five seconds, key factors about those aircraft. So I've learned a lot from Hillary eaters in the night. Try to read as much as I can, whether it's from the h. or whatever it exists them some of these nineteen forties place on much h, but you can still there a lot from people have been around them. And then it becomes virtually with, of course, walk around which is standard to most aircraft, but everyone has a little nuanced understand those nuances and where to look for the where things that could be a risk to flight. And then you know getting inside of to your your who walk around again, familiar with it is just getting from with layout. And I sit in an airplane for pretty long time actually before take that first model for a ride and kind of understood the what I call critical ingredients were were fuel. And how would you read it? What where's the engine monitoring where that, and then finally, you know, what are the fly. Controls were to the trims that you know from Trimdon flaps and it replays seems similar in that regard that they have some form of that and become a familiar with that and go easy. It's sort of reinforces the value of of hangar flying sitting around talking to other pilots who flown in the air. You're gonna fly in or flown the airplane you flowing in and just sort of informal conversations. A lot of learning that goes on there, don't you think I do. I tell you, you know, Saturday afternoon at the airport, never waste. They'll tell you that on top of all the things you do garner from other people are willing to share back country experiences or case rotorcraft. I've learned more from fellow helicopter
