So in just a few weeks had to master the scientific gardening art of Arrow, politics. So. Soil normally already has all the nutrients the plans need, and when you water, the soil, water dilutes the nutrients and make them available for the roots of the plants can use the nutrients to grow, but with their opponents things were differently. The roots are basically hanging free in the air and are sprayed with water and nutrients every two minutes, so it turns out Paul. Skills as an engineer were perfectly suited to the task of Space Garden. We have a very technical greenhouse, the control the climate, the temperature immediately you the CO two level all systems that keep the plants alive so that they can produce food for the crew. Animal Slander! Debunking 'Birdbrained' And 'Eat Like A Bird'

"All right first up bird brained again. People say this when they're implying somebody needs to get it together or they're scattered. Yeah clearly not a compliment right so for more on this you talked to Corinna newsom. Hello Hi Emily. Yeah Hey how are you? I'm good how are you good? Good my name's emily. Corinne is a Grad student at Georgia Southern University studying birds and before that she was zookeeper she's got a deep well of experience to draw upon for today's episode. What's your relationship with that phrase bird brained? I usually get a little bit offended when I hear the word bird brained as a person who spent a lot of time training birds For the purpose of education and showing off natural behaviors. I've gotten a chance to look very closely. At how birds think and understanding the way that they think and being very impressed with their cognition and so when I hear people use bird brained as an insult. I am. Dan Personally insulted. You gotta stand by Your burs. Starting off strong. I mean you gotta set the tone. Okay trusted expert. Witness Carina newsom approaching the bench. Hit us with that sweet sweet evidence. Carina SAYS BIRDS ARE OVERALL PRETTY SMART. Cognition depends on the species of course but birds in the Corbett family like crows and Ravens are wicked smart. Oh Yeah Yeah Yeah. They can memorize faces. They were Super Cool. Experiments on that in some crows can make tools which is usually associated with primates. Correct and you know what other birds are. Smart Parrots. They are incredibly social animals. They are also very skilled at mimicry. At recognizing even memorizing patterns At picking up on behavioral cues from humans. Corinna says that parents are tough pets precisely because they're so smart you have to give them mental stimulation and if you don't they're going to occupy themselves which oftentimes may end up looking like biting your furniture tearing apart your shoes wreaking havoc on your home here. It's need constant mental stimulation or else. It's just havoc and all of this has to do with connections inside their brains. Do I smell little data? Kwon Oh you. Do you better believe you do so a couple of years ago. This study came out that looked at brains across different types of birds songbirds parrots various birds of prey and the study looked closely at this part of the brain called the medial spira form nucleus which helps connect the Sara Bellum to the Tel and south one. Zero Bhalla is at the back of the brain deals with muscle movements balance. That kind of stuff. Do you know what that is yet? Yeah I know stuff kwong. Okay fine well do you know at the Telegraph. Alana's I yes. Go read do go right ahead. What is it okay. All right Gimme second. There's a lot of stuff in the brain Yeah it's this really intricate set up structures in the brain that are required for some of the most complex and evolved functions. Yeah you clearly. Google that With I can't you're breaking up on going through a tunnel. Ma'am you're in a closet? You can't be gone through the same time all right anyway. Moving on the key here. Is that the bridge connecting these two parts. The medial spire form. Nucleus and birds is a mark of strong cognitive abilities and parrots have an unusually large medial spiral form nucleus for their size so the birds have small low noggins but really advanced Lil Naga. Oh yeah good point. That was my follow up question to this research. Carino was talking about two and so despite the fact that birds have like very very small brains Usually like the size of a walnut forest and even larger Brain Bird. Those brains are the most effective at packing neurons compared to any other brains including Mammalian brains. So you hear that birds punching above their weight when it comes to neural density honestly. I'm not surprised. So some birds have about as many neurons in therefore brain than like a primate so because their brain has some complex folding and the the neurons are closer physically closer together inside of the brain. They can have a large number of neurons accomplishing a lot of the same goals that animals with bigger brains and their but fewer neurons have. Okay Kwong the verdict on bird brained. Oh you know what it is Mattie. Do I even need to say it slander? Getting so good that you taught me how could Lord okay? Okay my turn so I looked into the phrase eat like a bird. Oh yeah very curious about this. People will say that it suggests. Someone doesn't eat very much that they're like peckish right. Which you know the official. Npr shortly position is that just. Don't comment on how much or how little somebody eats you know what I mean. Generally speaking yeah mine. You're on food business. Yes so okay. Let us start our examination of eat like a bird by considering the simple hummingbird. Do you know how they eat. Deer Kwan no no I do not dear Mattie but I fear but I fear you are about to tell me in excruciating detail first of all let me start off by saying you're welcome second introduce you to Alejandro Trico. He is an assistant professor of biology at the University of Washington on curator of birds at the Burke Museum of the University of Washington. But before that when he was a graduate student at the University of Connecticut he was part of one of my favorite bird. Eating related experiments ever so humming. Birds have really long tongues that dart out to get nectar and for a long time scientists. Thought that the tongue worked like a tiny tiny little tube so small the nectar. Kinda just shoots up the tongue on its own by what's called capillary action Ali in his boss Margaret Ruby. The did not by this capillary action. Theory Oh We were discussing. How the equations and the predictions from those capillaries don really made sense in terms of what the actual the hummingbirds in nature look like. But here's the thing on one does not simply eyeball a hummingbird tongue. These little are as thin as a fishing line and they dart in and out of the beak at like fifteen to twenty times per second. Whoa so to solve these problems. What we devise were tiny transparent flowers with flat sides so we could film through it and see the action happening on. We needed high speed video because it's happening so fast so we were filming between a thousand and two thousand frames per second just to see how long would interact with the nectar. So cool all right so. They made little glass flowers so they could film through them. That's that's pretty genius. Yeah and what they saw kwong. It changed the Hummingbird game. What we saw is that the Humbert on when he touches the nectar. I the portion that is inside the liquid on falls on it has little fringes on those tubes on those open up. Oh so it definitely isn't just a static little tube no not even close as the tongue is shooting out of the beak. It's compressed by the beak but when the tip of tongue hits the nectar it splits into two like a little snake tongue and those tips. They have these little flaps that hoping an those flaps fill up with nectar. That is so amazing.

NFL Power Rankings: Projected wins and playoff chances for top 6 picks

"So ESPN dot com today. They put out the twenty nineteen NFL power rankings. They project the wind totals and the playoff chances for each team in the NFL. They used ESPN's football power index. It's the FBI you see it all the time on sportscenter during the NFL and college football season F B I. So they go through and they project the amount of wins. And then they say the purchase the chances of percentage that you make the playoffs. Who do you think is the number one team in the national? Football league for projected wins and their chances to make the playoffs for this season. Well, Chris I'm not gonna lie the audience. I'm looking right at it. And it is the Kansas City Chiefs, you could just play along. They don't know looking at I don't act like you're smart truthful with our listeners Kansas City Chiefs, number one. I don't do bits FBI projects their win total the ten point three which I believe is under their win. Total in Vegas. I believe their windows at ten and a half. So they win ten point three games. That means you go under. Yeah. I mean, it's pretty close. So it's dead. It's dead on. It's kind of a you just say they win ten games. I would think but yeah, I think that they and the chiefs chances to make the playoffs at eighty percent per ESPN dot com. FBI who's number two number two the New Orleans Saints and the saints are projected to win ten point ten games. Seventy six point nine percent chance to make the playoffs. According to. FBI number three on the list. The Los Angeles Rams at ten point one wins tied with the saints. And they are for chances to make the playoffs. Seventy six point four for the Los Angeles Rams number four seed, they're not just going by the projected win total because number four they have the New England Patriots. And they have actually the highest projected win total at ten and a half they do. But who's number four in their power rankings? The New England Patriots. Go five. That's what I'm saying. They're not making them by. Wins giving them the powerful power. I index they're saying these are how are rankings are because the doing the patriots. They have rate fourth. But by the football power index. They have the highest amount of wins in Vegas, though. The the patriots are set at eleven wins because everybody's betting that over who's number five. That would be the Indianapolis Colts the young upstart Indianapolis Colts whose whose quarterback who's this young new quarterback. I had everything was like hold up. We we haven't gotten to the Chicago Bears. We're talking colts. Okay. So F FBI is saying nine point two wins for the colts. Yeah. Fifty seven point nine percent chance to make the playoffs. Indeed. And coming in at number six. This is your bears fans not the Chicago Bears. But they have less projected wins than the Chicago Bears. They have a lower chance to make the playoffs. Then the Chicago Bears, and those would be the hoity toity, Los Angeles chargers and with their west coast, avocado toast, what I don't know. Point eight wins. Forty nine point seven percent chance to make the playoffs. So they have in the power rankings. Chargers ahead of the Chicago Bears because the bears are seventh. Yes. Projected by FBI the projected win total and be nine point one which would be under the nine and a half and the chance to make the playoffs at fifty five point six percent. Yes. And they have listed where the team improved. It says obviously Jeff Dickerson wrote this bears reporter for ESPN dot com. He wrote running back, obviously, they improved at running back by signing. Mike Davis grafting, David Montgomery, more touches for Trico and get him more involved in the offense getting rid of Jordan Howard trading him to the eagles. He says that the most of the TV improved the most at the running back position. They basically revamped that entire running back room by getting rid of a lot of guys. I think take one as L. My also be a camp casualty? We'll see how their other running

"But I didn't think about it as someone that is also Crean that's had a hard time justifying my own history with being Korean. Until I'm actually at the lympics about to go on TV, and I'm not a trained journalist. I don't know what the hell I'm doing. And right before I go on. I realized it was with my Trico, and it's live, and I am petrified. Because it's finally dawned on me as dumb as I am that. Oh my God. That whatever I'm doing. I need to make sure that I do at the best of my abilities because whether Korean people want me to talk about cream culture, and I'm probably the last person to talk about Korean culture, because I know so little about it. It was an overwhelming sense of emotion. And I felt all of this before I went on to speak to my Trico. And I think that the first two minutes I almost had a brain freeze. I don't even know what I was doing because the producers like, oh, yeah, you're gonna talk to like, basically twenty million people or I don't how many hundreds of thousands or millions of people were were watching. And I was like this might be their first introduction to cream culture. And I was just overwhelmed with that sense of responsibility. And something that I shied away from my entire life sort of came full circle is like shit. I gotta do this. Right. Even though whatever's happened in the past it's the past. I have to do the best thing possible. And I took it incredibly seriously. And I began to think that was a lot about how I thought about the food that I cook there's a lot more Korean things. There's a lot more things that I'm trying to explore. So when Steve with where he's at in his life. We got pretty emotional when we realize our upbringings that sense of awareness that whatever you did in your past. However, you were raised it is what it is. And there's nothing you can really do about it. But understand it. You can't fight it. You gotta accept it. And I had that realization in Korea for NBC and Olympics. And I was so proud to represent like Korean culture for NBC. It was something that I still can't believe happen. And I I find it odd that it was me someone that. Didn't really fit in with either culture, either America or create. So when Steve talks about how he feels about being in American and the acceptance of it, particularly with how we were raised, and I was really grateful that Steve came here to talk about it. And I don't know if I've done a good job explaining anything other than I guess to summarize at the age of forty one at the time of place that I am in as lucky and fortunate. I have been in blessed with these opportunities. I realized that I have to be a better role model I have to embrace things that I might not have done before in. Ultimately know that people are looking out my moves, and I need to be the best representation for myself and for anyone else because I can't tell them to follow my lead. That's not what I need them to do. And Steve expresses this a little bit later that just do you? And ultimately, I think the most powerful line, and then this podcast to think about into ponder about is this cream. And phrase losing is winning. And I won't unpack that now let you guys listen to it. But this is my conversation with Steve Yun talk about burning and a few other things. Enjoy..

"Is never the same. A loved one dies. The experiences like a small death. One moment of person is alive and part of the world and in a flash they're gone and it's a change. So irrevokable that in the immediate aftermath, the heart in the mind simply can't accept it from the book. Harry felt as though he too were hurtling through space, it had not happened. It could not have happened. The world has Harry knows it has essentially ended. And yet just as when he lost series, it spins on in the months and years to come Harry, we'll have to grapple with what the events of this night mean, but that's simply all too much now. And so it kind of shocked. Clarity takes hold. Harry takes him out with impediment. He's he's Ron and macgonagall lupin battling a death eater, a piece and Tonks engage in a battle. Just beyond them. The castle is crumbling around them. Spell shattering walls and windows. He. He passes an injured never once again, briefly involved in the fight. The nearly chosen one tells Harry that sniping Malfoy just passed. I know I'm on it, said Harry in any other circumstance. Harry would stand here with his friends and fight. Yeah, but not now he's carrying the knowledge of Domo Lewis demise at the hands of snake, the responsibilities of waging not just this battle, but the war beyond this. All those things have been passed down to him. Now he plunges on after sniping Drako ignoring the cause of his friends and classmates come back. The pursuit winds Harry through the halls of the castle. There is so much blood on the ground that he's able to track sleep. "That bring the doorbell and leave and pretend like know somebody else gave him the doughnuts and then i got yelled at and either event the happiest retirees tend to have between three and four core pursuits activities or interests that their passionate about uh the urban institute economist barbara view trico studied retirement satisfaction and she found that retirees who both worked and volunteered were more likely to say they were satisfied than those who janet i'd rather work i just did my wife and i volunteered our church and we just went through this massive fundraiser and i can tell you created way more stress than it was worth but hey we raise a lot of money for the church so we wanna stay active and engaged we want to have a lot of friends we wanna make sure that were getting enough assured income and this is one of the things i want to talk with mr pass through about because that in combat guaranteed source of income um is something that really really is important and so many people ignore it in particular financial advisers they don't think it's that cool because they don't get paid some feed managed the money for you but let's talk about the research that's been done on this very saw subject inadequate nest day he says is important but there's an even deeper satisfaction that comes from guaranteed income the comfort of knowing that whatever the financial markets may do regular income will continue to flow in no matter how long you live sounds obvious sounds logical why than just financial advisers by and large ignore guaranteed income i don't i talk about it every week on this program almost daily because i believe in it it's so strongly that it's so important not because it's a great investment what is a great investment can you define what a great investment is something that goes up and never goes down well then it's not an investment because the only way to do great is to make sure that you have something that also as the potential to go down if it just went up substantially there would be no such thing as an investment because everybody would jump on the bandwagon and a couldn't work forever simple as that he goes on so it's no surprise that research has shown that retirees received guaranteed income whether.
