"It's clear that he's going to seek some support from conservatives. So as I said with the speaker's raise if you never fall in love with personalities and you fall only in love with outcomes i .e. how do they vote and do they do conservative stuff you will never have a problem. But that being said, the fact of the matter is this, that mister show Chu or whatever he wants to say, we know for a fact that at the CCP, once access to any of these databases to any of these servers, they are going to have full and complete access to it the parent company ByteDance, which was the creator of TikTok. Trey Gowdy Criticizes In-Fighting Between Trump & DeSantis
"I want you to hear Trey gowdy last night. Good guy. Former prosecutor out of South Carolina, U.S. congressman, now he's got his own show on Fox and he is uncomfortable not with the Santos attacking Trump, but he doesn't like Trump's attacks of Ron DeSantis. Ron has been taking on taking on weaponry, taking on attacks for weeks now. I mean, you mentioned he had an overwhelming victory in November and yet when a president Trump surrogates accused Ronald fixing the vote. Another one of president Trump's surrogates said that he was backed by George Soros. So I mean, at a certain point, whether you're running for president or not, you have to defend yourself, I don't know. I have not asked Ron, we serve together. I have not asked him if he's running for president. I think other people are going to get in, but you know, they know me, the whole process is really so degrading. I mean, you've got allegations of grooming high school students when you were a teacher, all this fixation over nicknames. I mean, we're picking the leader of the free world. The leader of the most important country in the world, and we are debasing ourselves with having these little quarrels over nicknames and allegations to go back 30 years that are really preposterous. I just think we ought to do better than that.

It wasn't a road most kids would be walking on and the kids that did live on that road. Well, they didn't have to walk to school. Looked at that child in the rear view mirror as we passed him moving this fast is his little feet would go Dropped our daughter all but I couldn't get the image of that child out of my mind. So instead of turning towards the courthouse Went back towards him and there he was still walking down the road. I pulled up beside him. Roll the window down and said, Don't be afraid. I have Children about your age to do you need a ride somewhere? Well, where you trying to get to son? He called the name of the school when it was a school. Miles and miles away. Said, son. You're you're not gonna make it walking. Do you want to ride? They didn't answer And frankly, I didn't blame him. Here was a strange man asking him to get in the car. And I said, son, I'm not going to hurt you. But by the time you get to school, it will be over. Let me help you. He got in the car and said My mom overslept. I missed the bus, but I didn't want to miss school. Did the math in my head that child had already been walking. For about an hour. And he had hours yet to go. But that was how bad he wanted to be in school. That is the power of education. It could change your life. It can change generations of lives after yours. Even at his young age, this child understood the power of education. My wife teaches first grade. She gets up every morning at 4 A.m. to go teach other people's Children. I would rather roof houses in July barefoot And teach six year olds, but I couldn't do it. She loves it. She has never once said a word about her own health. During this pandemic she puts on her mask and she goes to school because she loves the Children, and she knows the power of education and every day missed hurts. The Children. I want you to contrast that with what is happening in Chicago and other places where it seems like the teachers have all the time in the world for dance videos and union meetings, but no time. For the Children. Then they can give you all the reasons not to go back in the classroom, but they can't seem to find a single reason to go back in the classroom. Teaching is hard work. Even what Allah penned in it. It's hard work, I get it. But if you don't want to teach Don't do something else. John Kerry and Kamila Harris. And may repeat. They got lots of employment advice. You could go build solar panels, you could go clear landmines. I wonder what advice they have for the teachers in Chicago who aren't willing to follow the science and go back to the classroom. Because he understood the power of education to change his life. Now contrast that with the image of those dancing teachers in Chicago That child knew the power of education and being in school. The tools in our own government? And it makes me wonder. Like, How is it possible that you know so many people from all over the world, they look to the United States as a beacon of light. They look to the United States as a place where the justice system actually means something where corruption is outed where people pay the price. Yet what we've seen over the last four or five years. Is that nobody has answered for any of this. Nobody that was involved in the Russia hopes paid the price and then they're going to do it again. Okay, now explain to everybody what that means. So the impeachment trial brief, basically is a document that lays out The case that you are going to make For any trial. This is the We are accusing the defendant of if it's a robbery, battery, blah, blah. And and in this case, if you want to read the brief, the full brief is up a judiciary dot house dot gov. I went there. It's 80 pages Nice. And if I want to read 80 pages of fiction, I can guarantee you it's gonna be about Star Trek. But Manu Raju The congressional correspondent for CNN did a really nice job of kind of breaking down the four key parts. Okay? Yes, I get it CNN, But when it comes to the impeachment of President Donald Trump, you know they're gonna be buttoned up. And, honestly, anyone who will spark no 80 pages is good in my book, whether or not they we left or right, if you're making our jobs easier, and you're cutting out the crap we're onboard, So these were the four Key parts of the impeachment trial. Brief one Trump's actions pre election where he claimed mass fraud. So free speech free speech. Okay, got it. To quote unquote stopped the steel and disinformation after November, 3rd. Disinformation, as in things they disagree with. Okay. Got it. Free speech again. Free speech together, okay? Number 3 January sixth and his comments at the rally. The march peaceably and let your voice be heard. So free speech again. Excitement free speech yet again, okay? Here, arguing its constitutionality. The election. I'm assuming Okay, So I'm glad you brought this up, jerk and I'm not trying to hone in on Producers picks Absolutely not. Trump's what Trump could possibly do with this impeachment, And he said, Why Trump should press his case on voter fraud? Which I was surprised by because David Marcus is usually, um He's I don't want to say he's a late in life, Trumper, but he's been open the past that he's been skeptical of Trump. And now he really I think he really is on the team of Trump has to keep fighting. And he broke down like three possibilities of what Trump might do, He said. The ability to lay out the case on why he didn't incite a riot and that there is widespread fraud may seem irresistible Trump on all three counts. Trump has a very reasonable arguments to make As far as the question of incitement. I made a longer argument in these pages, but it boils down to the idea that Trump's actions were way too broad and indirect to be considered an incitement. Like we said free speech. That's hard dependent. I'm just skipping around here. Number two We also now know that the writing had started a mile away from Trump's speech before he finished speaking, and that elements were pre planned. The case for incitement is far weaker than the media would have you believe? Finally comes the most controversial potential defense that there really was massive voter fraud. Too many Republicans too many Republicans and not being shamed now into not making a very important argument about election security will be the most trump thing in the world to show up in the Senate and fight the fight. They refused to. Trump seems poised to get a win. When the votes are cast in his trial. The question is, how big will the wind be? I think your answer is based on how broad the scope of his acquittal is. Trump doesn't want to win on a technicality. He wants to win on the merits. I won Now This is what I find very Nerve racking because the the safe part of me wants to say, fight it on constitutionality. I mean, you can't impeach somebody who's already out of office. And was there a breakdown in intelligence? Because we're hearing that there was warning given that this was going to be a large crowd, and there were potentially some very unruly people. They didn't just react to his speech became with full intentions of attacking the capital, and so who who decided not to call out the National Guard ahead of time. Think about that if they had been there ahead of time. There would be no impeachment based on what they're talking about, right? Because it would not have happened. It would have been squelched almost immediately. And so now you see the president there and, yeah, you know, Look, I'm a soldier, and I know how these things work. And when you're called up and you're going to work you you have a break. You have played place to sleep. And you know what? Soldiers. They're tough. We'll sleep on concrete. You've seen it during war. We'll sleep on mats who doesn't really matter. But you know, the important thing about everything is you've got to be healthy and you've got to make sure that you have your wits about you. So having a little bit of reprieve is part of it and what you're seeing pictures of his people getting that chance to reprieve so they could be the best they could be on their job. They are all over Washington. Right now. It is a A. For those of us that work. There were very glad to see it. In fact, your leader Kevin McCarthy, The Republican House Minority leader said yesterday that the president is responsible for what happened at the Capitol. Do you believe that? Well, I will say that he bears some responsibility or there was a lack of responsibility in his in his response, they're going back to what? I didn't want him. Peaches. I don't have all the facts. And I would like to know who the people were the people that were getting arrested and no more of the details of what they were what they were doing and how they had planned it because it seems to me That there was nothing, the president said. That meant that the people then went out and started making pipe bombs. They came with them. So it was even before the president's rhetoric or whatever he had to say during his speech, there's a former attorney general that made the case and he's done a lot with Violations during protests, and he said he didn't do anything to incite it. That remains to be seen. And I think that there was a lot of discussion to be had. But we didn't have that discussion. And that was a big part of the problem. You know the president, I think, as Trey Gowdy, I heard him say this on TV said, You know, the president kept over promising and under delivering when it came to We're going to, you know, turn this election around this and that, And so that gave a lot of people hope was that a criminal act? It was that treason. Was that something that's impeachable? I don't know. I don't think it's wise. I think it's always smart to to not do that do not over promise and under deliver, And so I think that did have a lot of influence on people's. The mindset about where this was all going to end. But I don't know that you can say that it inside. It's something because I think people personally responsible for their behavior. Look when, when, When we got shot at the baseball field, there was the potential to kill about 30, members of the House Republican Party. Tell me that wasn't attempted overthrow of a portion of the government and you know you didn't hear all this from the people. This man was inspired by Bernie Sanders. It was well thought out. It was calculated. We held him responsible for his actions, not Bernie Sanders. And you know you could make the case that Bernie Sanders inspired him and therefore it's burning Sanders fault. But to me, I'm staying consistent is the responsibility of the people that perform the exact same with rights during the summer, saying during this But I do think that what people say matters and if you're going to make that case, Democrats, then take a look at yourself. Take a look in the mirror and we can go down a long, long list. When they were advocating violence. You know, I always say to young folks, I see a lot better than I hear and that I don't pay much attention to what someone says. I pay attention to what they do. And in this case, Joe Biden and the Democrats want to turn the page have a fresh start, like Jerry Ford did After Nixon and according to media accounts, the at this point, they say one thing they do another How is it in the national interest for have a full blown impeachment trial in which due process has to take place the president or ex president, we have the right to confront his accusers that have to be hearings and judiciary committees have to be depositions taken, and then I'm told from one of the president's acolytes that he wants to testify in the Senate. Because he wanted to testify in the Senate in January, and he was for failed upon not to do it by Mitch McConnell and others Because they already we're gonna win and why mess it up by testifying, But this time he'll be out of office. He won't be the president and his legally disputed whether you can have an impeachment trial for an ex president, as opposed to a president, president. And how's it in the national interest not to take up the Biden so called agenda for the 1st 100 days and instead deal with the circus atmosphere of an ex president coming into Washington with all of his high powered attorneys and living again and again and again through what happened on last Wednesday. How is that in the national interest for Democrats, Republicans And for those who don't vote at all. And for the people. How about that? How about for the American people? There is so much that this body is responsible for on behalf of the American people. And look at what we're going to be spending time on. You know, for Ford did it with Nixon, he goes, the country needs to move forward. We can't be bogged down with this. It doesn't help us it divide this more than united. And, you know, just go back to what I said in my statement towards the end, and we're on a course with this. It's only going to cause more division and what we should be working on each and every day each and every member of Congress. And maybe for that matter each and every American keep working towards a more perfect union with peace, prosperity, liberty and justice for all. If we're doing that, and keep those tenants in mind, then we can. We can do a lot of great things in this country. This is not the way to do it. We're going to debate policy. That's normal. I would I would love for for Washington just to be a think tank and we come out with good ideas and what works best for every American. But this is the stuff that people want to be bogged down with. I don't expect Them much to really be done on behalf of the American people and a Congress that is controlled by Democrats right now that on Lee, seemingly especially in the last four years on, Lee seemingly could be out to try and be raped their colleagues try and tear them down and tear the country apart isn't last question. "There was no Capitol police being attacked. There was no vandalism. There was no breaking and entry. Everybody on that side was waffle and had no idea I had no idea what was going on the other side. It was almost like WalMart on Black Friday morning years ago. So for all the people over there peacefully protest Ng And being maligned as traitors and insurgents that that's very hard to hear. Because people standing up for this country hold wife Gretchen's people in their sixties grandparent's I stood there with them. And there was people that infiltrated that crowd in causal that problems and they weren't trump supported by no. Wait. How did they come with gas masks? They brought Nope. With them. How did they know to bring note with them to port in their eyes? When they got sprayed? They were in combat here. They were in Trump supporters goes that was Iran, Tiefer or somebody? There were no barricades on that back side. We just walked right up the street and right into the back side of the Capitol, where the car's pulling with the Senate is when they drive in in in the Congress, Congress, people from Congress. Everybody just walked up to the back, and I saw one moment of video that went viral on Twitter. Where literally the people that were at the gate. They just they opened it themselves to let people in. I saw it with my own eyes. I mean, I know And I'll tell, you know, of course, is agitators in these groups. You don't we? I'm waiting for till I can get a full and comprehensive report board beginning to get a good picture an idea of people that were there to purposely agitate that had agendas and Some know they weren't Maga people, but listen, you know the fight for liberty and freedom. I talked a little bit about it talked about it yesterday because I was on a college campus and I saw the agitators and I saw how it only took ah handful of them to get a crowd really into a frenzy. I saw it, Um, Mass Psychology is a lead somewhere. Well, it's a funny thing how people reacted in crowds so If he had done over this is this is the other problem I have. I understand. People are not constitutional scholars, but they say they're quick to say I'm for the Constitution. Well, then at least peruse it and find out that the Congress has no way to change. The vote. It's insurrection. World's watching President Trump took to Twitter posting a video calling for calm. We have to have peace way have to have law and order. We have to respect our great People in law and order. We don't want anybody hurt. But the president maintained his claim of an election that he says was stolen from him. It was all part of a scene that those who have legislated from the U. S Capitol found disheartening. I am a law and order person. Trey Gowdy is a former member of the U. S. "Good evening the house impeachment inquiry that has gripped Washington was jolted this week by two major developments essentially to do cross currents that could affect the debate for weeks to come first America's top diplomat in Ukraine ambassador William Taylor gave damaging testimony behind closed doors testifying at the White House did threaten to withdraw military aid and less Ukraine announced probes that would politically benefit president trump the testimony by Taylor an army veteran and respected diplomat undermine president trump's insistence that there was no quid pro quo then late Thursday came reports that Attorney General William Barr has opened a criminal investigation of the F. B. I.'s conduct during the twenty sixteen campaign even as the DOJ inspector general is wrapping up his own investigation of related issues those proceedings have been cheered by the president and by Republicans who see them as a counterweight to the house impeachment probe house democratic chairman Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler released a statement in response quote if the department of justice may be used as a tool for political retribution or help the president with a political narrative for the next election the rule of law will suffer new an air repairable damage joining me tonight card the margin compression on national security reporter for The Washington Post Catherine Lucey White House reporter for the Wall Street journal I'm none of us national correspondent for the PBS newshour in Jonathan swan national political reporter for axioms corn you've been following this impeachment inquiry all week at the capitol but for the DOJ to now be opening a criminal investigation what's the significance of that development I need all the other impeachment news for the timing has to be pleasing the president because it presents a counter narrative for what's been going on you have he he's been investigation which we know right now looking at that the Ukraine connections and you have the investigation into the origins of the Russia probe which Russia Ukraine are not that separable let's say that given the president something to focus on something that he can now double down on as the focus is heating up on impeachment look that Durham has been a criminal prosecutor who's been in in charge of this investigation for a while in a way he is always had because of the role he plays the ability of the panel grand jury or to you you know issue indictments against individuals we don't know that he's actually taken those steps yet so the actual significance of what this means does this actually end up pulling in career investigators from the FBI or elsewhere for some sort of felt form of malfeasance or does this just end up being you know a political give to the president at a time at which he's feeling like people aren't really behind him and he wants his troops to rally around him what's the significance of the Attorney General being involved in this kind of investigation doesn't raise questions about the independence of the DOJ I think president trump has always been pretty clear about the role that he thinks the traditionally independent department of justice should play which is that he should be able to direct the work that they're doing and by extension the work that the Attorney General is doing we know Attorney General Barr is involved in this investigation that's being led by John Durham is the US attorney in Connecticut and so they're obvious questions there about what exactly was the motivation for opening this investigation in the first place but bar message of this very very early on right he said before Congress I do believe spying occurred on the trump campaign I would be willing to explore the origins of the Russian investigation and he's also been part of some of the efforts to protect the president politically is pushed back on the subpoena efforts to try to get at the president's tax returns as well so this fits perfectly in line with that raising it to a criminal probe now ups the ante right it kind of turbochargers and it kicks it up a notch I don't have any other medical as Kerr mentioned gives them all of those powers now we don't know what evidence led to that you can't just in the department of justice they were suddenly going to make this a criminal investigation some piece of evidence had to lead to that we don't know what that we usually don't understand Jonathan there's the DOJ probe led by the Attorney General investigating the origins of the Russia pro and then you have the inspector general also within DOJ doing his own report how did they align if at all we don't know we don't know what the IG reports going to say we don't know when it's going to come out and I think we should be very cautious about saying that this is counter programming in terms of when when learning about this criminal investigation of being elevated a grotesque issue number one we don't know when they made that decision when he said okay it's pasta threshold way I believe is that their crimes could have been committed dharma is a serious prosecutor sincerest guy with a serious reputation he's not seen as a partisan hack he has a storied career now in terms of the white it kind of program will would mean the Adam called in okay better than New York times we used in this sort of way and I bet two of the best justice department reporters so I think it's quite possible this could have been opened we don't know when it was opened could be up and you know weeks ago and it could be as simple as a leak investigation we know there was so much classified information leaked in the early if the Russia investigation Sir this is all just to say there's so much we don't know and people are going to spend this in the ways that they want to do you know they can be hysterical about it but I think that it could it could be as simple as by doing what trump wants to do and and our own following the facts and keeping the family up in mind Catherine let's take a stroll down from the DOJ on Pennsylvania Avenue to the capital and you had ambassador Taylor behind closed doors give this damaging testimony about a quid pro quo arrangement inside the trump administration how is the White House reacting is this something that they see as a major turning point well this is a significant moment in in this process this is the most detailed some of the detail of bay has money we've seen so far was a fifteen page opening statement really laying out the cinematic terms it was give me I think that the loss was beautifully written the the way that the Taylors and takes us into taking the job it reminded me of movies where someone is brought into a different world like saying like Goodfellas or I recently saw hustlers forgive someone to take it into a totally different world and they sent me Sir to realize what's going on and we're trying to figure it out and he comes to realize there's two different farm policies going on and and and then of this beat into his explanation of what he understands to be happening with the president's engagement on Ukraine the White House is continuing with a messaging that is a lot focus on process they are attacking of the the process on the hill they are and they are also trying to discredit all the witnesses so you heard the present today criticizing Taylor you know and we'll see if that sticks this is a decades long your career diplomats in came forward and who is hired by this by this administration and you're standing outside notebook in hand of the skiff the secure area inside of the house well all these people testified but a **** Taylor in particular we heard there is a reporter take me inside the room what were you hearing from members about how it went and why it matters and investors tellers testimony has had the most impact of any of the people have come and thus far in this impeachment pro and it's because of the details of his testimony it's also because he names names and connects dots in other ways that people have not he even when he was in the room he was in touch with the people who were in the room and he lays out a narrative exactly how the Giuliani campaign led to strategist at the group on the crane policy start to diverge from the more traditional roots how when you had the secretaries of state and defense and CIA and the national security adviser all saying week we should be sending that aid there you then had the Maldini camping like maybe not and he actually has a timeline also of when the freeze on the funding came when to him it seemed like there was a quid pro quo going on here when he was told specifically by people in the administration that yes the money is being leveraged in order to secure a promise from Ukrainian president to conduct investigations into the energy company that Joe Biden's son was on the board of and this twenty sixteen to hack this conspiracy theory around the DNC server that was hacked in twenty sixteen the theory says that it's somehow ended up in Ukraine and if it were found it would prove the Ukraine interfere in the twenty sixteen election is not Russia that's been widely debunked already the fact that there was so powerful though his is is I think the reason why you saw at a direction of political action the next day let's talk about that right that political Russian because you you're there covering it and you see the testimony itself it is a game changer for the house Democrats as they build their case against the president but his current setting house Republicans decided to take matters into their own hands trump loyalists forced their way into a secure in a room view room on Capitol Hill blocking witness testimony for hours we're going to go in there today and demand we get our rights remembers of Congress what what what what was it like when they actually stop the testimony from happening well I mean a delay the testimony for about five and a half five five and half hours from starting that was the day that Deputy Assistant secretary of defense lawyer Cooper who eventually talked about kind of the nuts and bolts of how the Ukraine military aid works on there are a lot of interesting parts of this it was certainly a display that we we we watched as as they stormed into that room there's nothing that actually prevents those lawmakers from walking into the skiff this gift is not like a locked box members of Congress have enough security clearance to go in also about a dozen of the people who were storming into that skip already had the right to be there because they are members of these three panels and just finally I should make the point that you know a lot of the argument that that has been about processes captain was referring to the Republicans are a part of this process they have the right to ask questions in these interviews they are getting equal time they don't like the fact that this is happening but they're not being iced out the way that claimed that they were it's also worth pointing out that entire spectacle took place the day after president trump is calling on Republicans to take off the gloves and show up and fight for him he wants to know that members of his own party are actually showing up in on his side of this fight and this was one the one way they could display that it's also worth pointing out the obvious hypocrisy because a few years ago when Republican Trey Gowdy was leading closed door investigative sessions into the U. S. attack that the attacks on U. S. facilities in Benghazi he argued they should be closed door for a reason those reasons are that if there's national security interest I play and also it gives witnesses a chance to be open and honest about their testimony was pause for a second talk about the house Republicans and Republicans in general making process the issue Jonathan is that because they don't feel like they're able to engage on the substance of the testimony they rather make it about the process there are some house Republicans I think of a small group that would be quite happy to fight on the substance but a small group and where there is no that that types to fight on the substances in the Senate noun so the backstory to this resolution that Lindsey Graham you know I'm sold you say that was actually very tame it was really just what was it was a process occupant it was a very soberly rescind tame argument against the process no substantive defense of Donald Trump the backstories that was Lindsey Graham wanted to write a letter to pelo see that was actually fairly bombastic and yet this is a sham at citrus address he pitched the lead out to the Republicans that they launched last week and the response was not good and the reason I did want to do it even people who support trump two reasons number one you write a letter like that anyone who doesn't sign on you've created an enemies list for trump's immediately number two you don't get many signatures it's very embarrassing he looks weak so what ends up happening Instagram shifts to a resolution he writes this resolution it's still a little too hot Mitch McConnell cools it down and you get this very milquetoast document that everyone can agree on but it's a very clear sign of what's going on in the Senate why this matters is Republican senators to not want to defend Donald Trump on the substance and the most they're willing to go is this sort of finicky process argument to say that you know they should change the way
