"A cocoon. And that gets us to this. Episode's big idea so let's power up the arc reactor and the story. The defining team in this episode is scars about as we always do the film's development. This man three came out in may. Two thousand thirteen is the kickoff. Which somehow is seven years ago now which is like truly shocking to me. The kickoff film for phase two of the mcu one year after the avengers says the first film in that in that segment of the evolution of the mcu and the conclusion of what is the mc. Use iron man trilogy through robert downey genius. Tony circus obviously an absolutely crucial pillar in the film's going forward to face. Two and three inches inch voltron kept american civil wars spiderman homecoming infinity war and presumed game. And it brought a director. Change to the franchise. Shane black just absolutely titanic figure throughout the eighties and early nineties Wrote lethal weapon came onto direct. He also wrote this film along with drew. Pearce and this change of course makes iran through the first ironman movie. That jon favreau did not direct though as we've noted he remained a part of the project. Happy hogan boy ditty in december of two thousand ten so two and a half years before iron man three came out vulture reported. That fabs would not return to direct. That's how far out this swap upon and this change began just just interesting to think about in terms of the timing of all of us as pharaoh told los angeles times is jeff cook. Marvel and i both came of age together of age means ultimately. What moving on to new things eventually right. Enter as jason mentioned. Shane black who had fallen out of favor. Fallen out of the active hollywood cycle and resurfaced with kiss kiss bang bang in which he had cast rob engineer and as rda and and others have spoken about in the press quite a few times that performance from downey in. That film is part of a cau- favelas. I and led to casting choice in the first place as black down told the hollywood reporter benjamin suspect in two thousand sixteen black was promoting his at that time new film. The nice guys downey could salted with shane. Black while working on the original iron man movie in two thousand eight and then asked him to come on a drier man three once it was clear that fabric wouldn't be helming that felony more quote in two thousand ten. The phone rang spec. You wrote it. Was robert downey junior says black. He told me. I want you to write and direct in ironman picture and everything changed again again. Just in the context of our ongoing discussion of how rapidly things evolved in the mcu. We've gone from fabio having to work to convince the studio to cast robert downey junior in the first place not having the biggest contract of the actors on the cast list even though he was in the lead to him being able to in essence determine who was gonna come on to conclude his franchise really remarkable that leverage baby. You got that. He had the he had perfectly designed contract for this series blowing up. And guess what movie smash it. Domestic box office. Four hundred and nine million which you know when you look at it with the other marvel movies as as the universe expanded doesn't seem like much but it's pretty great eight hundred six million international which is fucking nuts one point two billion globally. There we have at our b. But as as we've mentioned divisive it netted seventy nine percent among critics. Seventy eight percent among viewers on rotten tomatoes and often a point of contention amongst people who would critique. This film was the twist the reveal that the mandarin is not the supervillain with the ten magical rings from the comic books but rather a struggling english actor named trimmer something else that fabric. Who told boucher in that. La times interview that we said it was quote. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world. This is notable in the context of discussing the mandarin twists. That it was really altered kellyanne putting trevor slattery in front of a screen. Fava's kinda famously in. Mcu media circles feature the mandarin his ironman films but was was prohibitively worried and ended up not doing it. The mandarin was in the original manuscripts scripts. You can read a lot about this. You're kevin feige you talking about this. And ultimately they him out and never found a way to do it for a couple primary reasons first of all the comic book canon. The character from the comics is racist is a racist caricature flat and can not be brought in as is to modern day movies. Without adjustments asian representation in bronze and silver age comics marvel comics in particular not create tony's origin story original origin story. Pretty racist even shang cheese going to have a movie Soon and has turned into a really really interesting character for marvel. And who's you know late. Seventies run as the master of kung fu was really puppy. Some interesting Artwork was pretty racist even for that time it was just a really at it was a blind spot for very very tough and the other obviously vastly less important factor. That farrow had has cited in interviews of the year is the mystical elements associated with the actor in the shape of those ten rings that you just mentioned that the character from the comics found no crash spaceship featuring contains the spirit they each differ power the power but as chabrol told mtv news back in two thousand ten. This is a an interview in a comment that we started in our first ironman pod. It's germane again here. Before he formally walked away from the project and the prospect of directing our met three and was talking about what may be would be in his ironman three. He said he wanted see the mandarin. Enter the cannon once the fcc had reached this point of widening in scope to the point that it incorporated not only the ironman cannon but more supernatural elements quote. You've got to do the mandarin. He told mtv news is larry carroll in may two thousand ten amid at that point ironman. Two's debut.

"America called this number Mr President and just like all these voices and like knowing. It's just tricked trevor. The whole time filled with glee. I thought it was fun. Rate and a very shane black. And I'm just I like Shane. I like the Way Shane. Black mostly tells the story take his his Predator movie that he did recently was Gar by year. Note that there is a lot of issues with that movie. I feel like the parts of credited I really liked. Were all Shane Black. Yes that's right that's right. I don't want to drag him for that. He also wrote the original. Predator and lethal weapons created lethal weapon. You know this is a guy who knows his way around this genre so I think for him to step up to the plate and do something playful within that space having like delivered a lot of like mustache twirling bad guys and ominous bad guys and stuff and to like us that veteran experience that he has within being being at the heart of a lot of action iconography over the course of decades. Getting this chance to do something. Subversive really works for me though. I understand why it doesn't for other people like to. There's like a level of people who I think quite just can't enjoy like a funny thing and then there's like a level of people that have I think valid criticism about it people who are like who had just doesn't land for and I think that if that if that describes that's totally fine for me more and more I've just started to like unashamedly fall deeply in love with trevor slattery as a character and I sure and I think I certainly hope that they do like a thunderbolt movie someday and he's like an integral part of the. Oh my God. That'd be amazing. Absolutely incredible I think I think you're you know again like I think we're in agreement here. I think that character is hilarious. I love to play 'em then feeds into it even more know for sure and I think it is tough with this character and I can understand someone being disappointed. It's just like they were setting this up but again it's really hard for me to just look at this. I mean it's it's really difficult. Th the idea like it's hard for me not to look at something without thinking about race because I always look at something and think about Reps. It's sort of my mo but like that again that characters origins made it. I think impossible to really do the character in this movie or with iron man specifically in a way that would be right and I think the right place to do it i. It's it's like when the comparison for me you know is with Batman begins. There are people there were some people. I remember being really like I think there are some people who were like trying to be offended on like you know like not my behalf but like you know the racial behalf of being like Oh man you cast racial Golan's Liam Neeson White Guy or you know like like like or just upset over the fact that they just whitewashed the character or whatever but for me I was actually super okay with that because otherwise what. The one brown character in Batman is a terrorist. Cool happy that that they changed the race to be a wipers..

"But just like even like spy fair where you're right like twenty four like leaning into very racist You know characterizations of terrorist leaders and stuff and it's like ugh awful awful stuff. It's very come on. You tell me then why. Why do you have to do that to you? You know very pervasive yet all season. Six right yeah. That's bullshit. I just thought can talk about it yet. I think that like shamed black is playing with a lot of that stuff with not just the mandarin character but also with the Guy Pearce character to a certain degree when he has that line of like. You wanted the real mandarin I am. I was always the mander and then he just gets immediately ripped by pots with Williams college once again. Just really like underrated is Gwyneth. Paltrow as pepper potts throughout all of these hundred percent. She's very very very very very great. The two eighty of this entire and it's really fun to see her kickings and asks you know not that not that we absolutely need it but it is really really fun and also emily passions watching with me and she was like. Yo G pouch. What's going on here like it was very goop play. There's a lot of finding it's going on there but I think like even in that moment it's like a Guy Pearce gets reveal. I'm the real men. And then he just get sucked black doing something that is using like the really big canvas of marvel to like take shots at superheroes structure and story structure of these kind of big epic modern myths and having a gas and like turning this. This big hype like reddit villain right of like these are my theories about the Mandarin and ten rings was being seated at all these movies and then it's just trevor. It's just like the washed up actor tr- Being Trevor slattery. That's WHO's being propped. Up on like coke zero and cocaine keep to keep him alive and keep him method and not even knowing that he's actually contributing to real people dying. That's that's GONNA disappoint a certain type of fan and I don't necessarily think unfairly and I do think that there are valid arguments and conversations and debates to be had about. Did they change? Course you know they were setting up the ten rings for a very long time. Obviously now we know they are still playing with that. Based on the fact that they're gonNa make the Shanxi movie like setting up unfair expectation and when is when is like pulling the rug out from under someone a worthwhile story move to me? That's like lying to the audience being like intentionally deceptive in your messaging can be worst wild to me if what you're actually messaging is great and if the surprise is worth the secret keeping and deception and the lying. It's your story protected I that is that a stance that I've come around to and I know not everyone is there or people will think that's bullshit and it's totally fine. It just happens to be how I feel about it and for me. The Mandarin joke works so well. I just think it's so funny in this time around was like I think maybe only like the third time I've ever seen this movie and watching all that trevor stuff and seeing like I am a teacher..

"It hasn't always been smooth. It hasn't always been this tide in as I'm sure they would like to be and I think the hope is that now we get. It's something that really ties in textually. Works really interestingly across both whether they can do that I don't know because the as I found out with agents shields the production schedules are way different from these TV so it might still not be possible but it's an interesting goal from from a storytelling perspective. I think I ah. It makes sense to me. It feels satisfying to have one consistent universe with one overarching person. Essentially Kevin Feige aggie overseeing it all if you look at what's going on in DC. Where I will always irked me that there was a flash on TV and a flash in cinema and these are the same character but these two different versions of the character at the same time? And now you've got this crisis on infinite Earth thing which I'm sure is very exciting exciting balloon if you were new to that franchise and you went in this late. Seventeen Superman's no idea. What's going on I it? There's something in the consistency assistant. See though I think makes sense. I mean the interesting thing about crisis it was always designed to deal with the exact problem. The reason they did that in the comic books in the first doc plays with like we have all of these competing realities. Nobody knows which way is up right. Now we've all been going off in different directions for years. Let's try and slim it down and they've they've done it a few times since it was not a one off on marvel's had slightly similar things So it it you know this is essentially I guess a sort of crisis Isis Point for Marvel TV. I'm on board with this. I have no problem with it but then that's politics. I don't really watch any of the other shows in I've watched gifted runaways. I've watched take them at one point or another and giving up on them we show them reason or another. We should point out but this is in reaction to the to the news at yes marvel TV to the two different branches at the moment of his marvel studios. which is the cinematic arm of of Marvel Rumba Kevin Feige and then it was marvel? TV Run by Jeff Lope and that branch branch is now effectively being shut down now this week that runaways. He's going to finish with his third and final season cloak and dagger was was eighty six which was owned in one thousand. That might have been the best of all of those shows. Clicking data was actually decent sith. Yeah I didn't watch it. I didn't watch many shows. I watched A. I watched them. The netflix shows news. And then I just got a little bit of an influx is roughened down as well. The netflix shows did. And this is the main pit. Sadness the Netflix show has had a very different tone wound especially the early Daredevil Jessica Jones in particular punish very much so and I really liked the second season the punisher as well You know they had a very distinct ton I enjoyed the texture that that you could enjoy. These appears in a different way in a much more adult way that you would never get on in. NCAA movies however otherwise well potentially kitty or stuff. Theoretically I feel like you know while we might not be getting from marvel it exists else. Well Amazon's the boys is fantastic and really adult and really really dark. And I'm trying to think that scratches that itch formula bit so I think while we you know we might miss seeing an adult punisher And things like that. I think other people are moving into kind of that's fair and you know they may not be sort of marveled canonical characters. But they're doing really good job. There's so much other stuff out there that I don't think it's necessarily you know not bigalow off. Do we know for sure that Disney plus won't do kind of theon rated stuff. I mean. I'm pretty sure. Yeah we're kind of coming you hugh Lou who browser a who can never pronounce that. Who apparently will be the the kind of compulsory? Oh yeah overall of all kind of fake B. R. rated stuff In fact there was a rumor. This week that the Netflix and marvel shows might be resurrected on Hulu Down the lines. We might get see. Charlie caucuses assistive once again and Kristen Rhetoric Jessica Jones. My culture is Luke Cage and the other one as well and His name aren't something anyway. Him and Oversee what was the John Burnt. All my birthday buddy love as opponent. Yeah corden exactly the same day last week did we okay. Did you US nice okay. I'm sure he did so. Many Randy is lemon. Here's a man. But Not Sixty six seventy seventy six. Wow Anyway To lay my come back down the line in a couple of years time I still be okay with that I'm largely okay with this. I've been nipping good marvel shows Told I haven't seen it. And but agents of shield is completely bonkers and is is worth watch just is now going to be seven seasons and I. I just don't have the time to sit down and watch it. Aging Carter was great So that you know they. They've also there have been true. True stinkers the worst thing that marvel put their name into cinematic until eventually was in humans and that was on Jeff Loeb's launch and I suspect nothing bad will will be allowed to err on Kevin. Vikings watch the idea in the also going back to the original question is a big marvel TV van. The idea of all Marvel Studios MC sound so small and sat. I don't know leave announced she. Hulk Miss Marvel Moon Nine Moon Knight's In in in addition to all the other shows that we are going to feature features some of the big names from the new What if all sorts of stuff? That sounds tremendously exciting to me. maybe down the line the Candu damage control or or or is Helen. Says you know Louise Show or cooking our trevor slattery. IBM their fall. Sort of stuff I don't think that I think the universe there's GonNa expand if anything and it was really frustrating Watching Netflix shows kind of dance around the fact that they were in the same universe but not really really so there is mentions of people with hammers and green green guys but that started to dissipate as those shows went on and agents of shield as you no is that has had all sorts of problems fitting in So hopefully that'll that'll change that. These these are these shows are now being custom made to fit into into and set up the movies and vice versa. Foggy confirmed maybe last week. The these characters that Disney characters will be seen in in the movies later down the lines. And that's really exciting. Yeah you want see someone like Miss Marvel Garin movie lineup on the night. We don't know where these shows are going to be like we don't what's they're gonna be like totally we don't know what they're gonNA be like visually. We don't Wan divisions going to be likely how the hell is vision coming coming back and not for example we've seen concept art from the Hawkeye show which indicates at as an adaptation of the Matt Fraction Brilliant Matter Fraction run in which he is the basically the the owner and landlord of building with all its with a motley crew of people in Kate Bishop is his young protege and Lucky to pizza dog. And you know that's going to be a smaller scale slightly more narrow focused I shall and I'd say something like doctor strange multi about this The one thing we can guarantees that Martin Scorsese movie watching any of it with us to his His detriment and Google will find a cinema TV while as question. Isn't it the had survey question. Missing anything out. Maybe maybe a little bit of other stuff that he's done and I think he did something. wasn't cinema but it was more of a rollercoaster movie Black Panther a winless theme park ride. I didn't like it very much Yes he is of course to child King of a Kinda in the marvel cinematic universe Black Panther Captain Marica civil war I'll what else on those two silly avengers movies that come I'm out as well And now he is teaming up once again with the Russo brothers Joe and Anthony and he is going to star in. This week's Thriller Twenty Bridges which they have produced you said and he. It's a thriller old-fashioned Cop Thriller in which something goes down in the island of Manhattan and the Twenty One bridges. Who usually initially this move films was called Seventeen Bridges and someone realize twenty one so they could be changed the film so the Twenty One bridges that go into Manhattan are all shutdown and his character? Jeff furrowed brow. I think his name Jeff police tough. Maverick Cop Jeff. Policemen must somehow save the day So John here choppy just a couple of weeks ago. I had a good old railroad time. Enjoy more consider empire put costs. Thank you I'm Dogra all great man. Thank you for being here. We're hits talk about twenty one bridges which is amazing new COP thriller. I kind of reminded me of the Seventies Cup Bruce Preece thirteen or taking penalty three It that was the thought you know when when I read it. Put Me The mon- of of those types of films You know it definitely It gives me a chance to play in that space Will you have the hero anti hero type of character that you can you can. Dive into opposite is before but it. It reminds me of movies. Lake like heat and Collateral and Mystic River has sort of that intensity to it so angry. Yeah Yeah Yeah. I mean. It's amazing premise. He played this NYPD. Detective who is chasing these cop killer has to shut down the island of Manhattan Ray It's it's it's quite what. What was your first impression when when you read the script will debt that conceit was the thing that grabbed me In I think you know we. We continuously tried to work on the script. And make sure that this was the case. The fact that you have these two sides sort of working there there there is it just once there's like a parallel storyline when My side and then the guys were chasing which I felt like it was just as strong long and You know at times I feel like even that side takes over in a way that steps..

"Is that the that's that's where black widow hail from the red room is where our trade basically not grown but oh traded groups okay so that's that's the thinking behind that and then also seems like we're getting taskmaster. Yes black widow. There's been some concept art and I don't know taskmaster very well Kevin. My understanding is taskmaster is just like is basically a copycat people's physical abilities. Yes you're also great great Qasim. I've seen the costume and it's awesome. I'm really excited to see how asking to translate especially. They just go full face but yeah task messner is a character whose ability is that he can copy other people's physical ability so if you are a master kung-fu he can immediately we learned concrete just learn various floor South Asian copying captain America's ability to use that she'll outs at all things he's able to mimic that so he has a very big huge threat because of his ability to copy other people's prowess so it's a really interesting character. That's not super utilize a lot of the amish so I'm really interested in seeing a light on the screen marvelous done a lot they take characters that are a super well known and don't really cool with it. Mysteriously is actually a great example for that Lake Nova Syria with the general public that well so and even fancy not utilize on so the job with doing stuff like that ideas on paper taskmaster as aimed at as editor south ridiculous but it is anyone that's been able to marvel it will be super interesting to see something where I think is essential for dote by seeing with you know the black widows and Ardian for taskmaster who is just taking the tax ask so to speak well speaking of characters that sound ridiculous on paper read the the names of the main characters of one of Marvel's next upcoming feature films and that is Fina Hickories Ajak Kinko macari three fast sprite and Gilgamesh. These are the internals they're going to be played by the likes of Angelina Jolie Salma Hayek Richard Mad in the king and the North is here Dr Ryan tyree Henry is going to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Kumail. Nangiani is going to be in the marvel cinematic universe. Lauren rid lock is Connie on the walking dead if you're still watching the walking dead which is this season. I thought was really actually very good. She's going to be an eternal. What what is this? I don't know what the eternal is our. I have to admit if I if you need to take my gi card away. Kevin is surrender it here. I don't know anything about the eternal is this is going to be direct by Khloe. Zhao is the filmmaker responsible for this one. Help me help me out. Help me understand what the internals are. The seems very odd to me. Hey Josh here's something interesting. If you're going to give away your heart and you can have because he is hurdles are also very unfamiliar to me this fight the bag. I like. I'm a huge as a comics. I know that created by game but I'm not Super Sir Leon Aren't they isn't there. There's a Jack Kirby element to this was a curvy male. See this is a little I know this is how little wow okay so blind spot blind spot for our resident copybook experts. This is bad news thing. I don't think this terrible news because all of a sudden most of the band are going to be in a position of the regular audience who goes in you remember. I think this shows were marvel has been were Disney has taken as franchises to this point is that went ironman for showed iron is is probably a list or a legendary status character now when he showed up he was like B._C.. Lists in the comics and in the general public probably a little bit lower people did not know who iron it was and they took him to a level level that now people know ironman oddly as much as they know which is crazy. I think we're hitting again. We're taking the eternal who you know going with Ireland Polychaete g lists at this point when Glenn doesn't be fans on the Internet and come after me but I think it's they're doing something for taking a risk in their introducing characters like the Guardians for example a great example guardians of the US a lot of people don't know those characters and they introduced them in the carbon way that made the other characters now in comics so we have an opportunity to do the same <hes> that they're able to take risks and take this job because they've proven that they're allowed to that. We're going to trust too so yeah you and I are. I've no idea I've no idea they're like thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of years old there are eternal dairy eternal they walk. They walk among us but they are not us Sir to quote Jack's tattoos so I don't know I don't know anything beyond that I have no idea. Why didn't they help out with Thanos is probably my number one question well thousands of thousands of thousands of years? I think they may have they talked about. According to five year blimp was like that's nothing. That's one of the things I do. The comments is that they had established as idea that problems are not the galaxies and beyond the universe <hes> we had to introduce Guardian Sue <unk> who they as being a celestial and you know being this ancient being that existed I think that's where we're headed US overlay pint of after that locate where it was open <unk> more the bigger universe at large and how huge Bassett like insane it is so I didn't like why the hell another so there to them like this as your thousands of thousands of years the oldest meaningless you got to imagine though with the ending Spiderman far from home in nick fury being in space and that being like our first clue of like what's out there what what are we. What are we building towards with base for that? The eternal should give some clarity like the eternal is kind of like potentially like our next big cosmic epic. Everybody's GonNa see it. It's got a ridiculous cast. It's got the marvel branding like I'm not concerned about that like any concern that I would've ever had about that was raised with guardians at the galaxy which was at the time again like nobody knew at that was now everybody in the world knows that the Guardians of the galaxy are so the eternal. That'll be the exact same thing no problem. That's going to be great. I I like that. It's a little bit mysterious to me and I'm not GONNA do too much digging around until I get to the movie Kinda just WanNa see what they've got but I I would just guess with the premise being that these are these are like ancient creatures that are protecting the universe from <hes> ancient cosmic bad things that they're probably going to be a gateway towards whatever that next big ancient bad thing is so I feel like well if black widow doesn't quite give us like the next big shot in the arm of what's going to happen the broader scheme of Marvel Post Endgame. I feel like eternal is going to give us a fairly clear direction of that. There's going to be a threat. That's going to acknowledge bring Brady attention of the oldest beaten galaxy a multi <unk> would be it like the entire multipurpose danger. I think that would make them pay attention so I think there is there that could be exactly that like the threat like you mentioned is GonNa be hybris all the turtles debt as the reason the show be like okay we deal with us guys okay so that's November twenty twenty which takes us to February twenty twenty one Shanxi and legend of the ten rings and we're finally getting the actual mandarin none of this Ben Kingsley nonsense get Outta here trevor yet done ah triggering for some people out there. I hear you Antonio. I know what you're thinking. People didn't like the Trevor slattery of it all. I feel like we'll probably see him like get like killed in the first scene of Shank inch. They'RE GONNA kill O.. Begley specifically the beginning this moment right there but to plug the Hollywood reporter again again. There is a really great article on H._R.'s heat vision interstitial that was that was talking about how yeah we're done with Thanos and Thanos was the villain that they were building up all along throughout the first wave of marble throughout the Infinity Saga but really commander in has roots dating as far back as the very first marble cinematic universe movie. We've been talking about the ten rings since iron. Man and Mandarin is traditionally at least from the comics hammocks is iron man's arch enemy slots of like racially charged problematic reasons why they didn't bring the Mandarin in back then when they could've brought the mandarin in and now mandarins showing up in the form of of Shanxi which is not just a Shanxi movie. It seems like this is going to be the tie in two Mandarin and I wonder if this is a setup for if not quite our next thanos maybe our next Loki even though we're going to have a low-key show <hes> I I wonder if that's sort of <hes> the the deal that we're getting with manner and then just some facts on on on Shanxi it's coming from director destined Daniel Cretin who is the director of short term twelve which Kevin featured Brie Larson in Wuxi wonder if we'll get some Carol Danvers here in our in our Shanxi there is the really fun reveal of actors Sima Lou as as Shanxi at Comic Ani's of Kim's convenience. He's also at twitter twitter superstar if you're not following him very asked to be. It's it's awesome yeah on twitter like when Shanxi was first announced months and months and months ago I report in Ah in the news he tweeted hey marvel. Can we talk and then after he was revealed on stage at COMECON. He replied to his own tweet being thanks for calling so so great. There's a new you mean out there right now of like you know do your Best Sima Lou and call your shot. Put something positive out there into the universe and see if the universe response to that end I would like to be the show runner of loss to to consider consider this me calling that shot and willing that into existence Damon. I know you're listening. I'm here. I'm ready. Let's make it oh you're listening well. Yes he's a big fan of poster recaps. Tell us about Shanxi as best as you can because there's a character that I don't know very well shake. She is an interesting. What's fascinating about doing this characters? I think there's a lot of <hes> historical context Taksin baggage that existed very similar to iron-fist in a way but in Shanxi is essentially a master martial artist. He doesn't have superhuman abilities. He just real good all the <unk> specifically I think like <hes> <hes> would you wanna say or are Chiampou but he is a master martial artists that may deal <hes> that's amazing. I know about introduce you know around the same time ah stay in all these characters were which this historical context complication but there was a lot of Asian American Asia Care has introduced her to sign here who was just like I really good at kicking punching which is a not doc great stereotype and so similar manner and there's a lot there that plays into like serotypes like out they addresses that said. I think you know if you do the Mandarin. This is probably the place to do it. I think having the you know insight they have now and and approach the intake. I think I trust to do it right <hes> so yeah. It's really interesting because you had to like this. You had like Oh man. What's his name karate? Just superheroes based safety just wrote a karate really yes so if I'm not mistaken that is chain cheese deals actually obviously meyers this because you know it's an actual inheritor who as opposed. Do you know a white guy who comes into that writing <hes> so yeah it really. It's so weird I I. I'm excited because you having Asia Severo the Asian character. That's leading Phil from really pumped about that. I know there's a lot of mixed feelings that I don't want to speak for offers -ly <hes> in terms of characters who it was created as a like like stereoty time so that's as much as I say about changing just because it sounds like well. It sounds like they're trying to really trying to do it right and they're getting a lot of Asian talent involved in this in both on on the cast and crew from the director to the writer and I think that they're really i. I really trust marble to to do this. The the right way. I believe that Shanxi into comics was the son of kung-fu Villain Fu Manchu which is not something that they've got access to for four for the films and that's going to be a piece of why they're going to do it with with the Mandarin as well. I'm curious but I I think that they've got the right people involved..

"Kevin Feige responded. Yes. That's all we getting, but it's very affirmative. Yes. Which means we're going to be getting the real Mandarin likely showing up at some point in the MC you. So the ten rings if you remember I peered in iron man, and the Mandarin as played by Ben Kingsley appeared in iron, man, three but and Kingsley's version was a fraud in a twist that many fans are still angry about but I found incredibly brilliant in Larry's. And it was presumed that the Mandarin was just a, a fictitious fictitious them invention of a guy Pearce his character, Aldrich Killian invention. And so butts in a marvel one shot that was shown on the dark world. We see a Ben Kingsley's, Trevor Slattery whose real name of the Mandarin. He comes face to face with the real mannered who's not very happy with him using his name. So that was just a tease and it wasn't really known if it was Kenan or not. But it seems like Kevin Feige saying that the real Mandarin does exist and will show up at some point, the MCI presumably will rather this base on fan theory, showing up in the first Asian lead superhero movies, Shang, Chee or Shane cheap, because a the Mandarin is a in this, in the MC is rumored to be changed his father. So that's a possibility. There's been this guy on four Chan that has been releasing Intel or maybe just rumors for marvel movies for the past couple years. And he's been dead on on some of his. Predictions. I guess you want to call them and one of his recent things that he, you know, quote unquote, leaked was that the mentoring would be would be shamed cheese father. So, so I guess that's where this whole thing came from. I guess that makes sense, maybe that's way of doing the Mandarin without it being offensive. I don't know. I feel like it could still be offensive just because the name itself is so oriented list, I will reserve judgment in that way. Like at least it's like you know, it seems like it'd be a minor character. Yeah. I don't know. We'll see. I mean, the thing is with this characters, and I think our three disagreed with it is that it took what was essentially a character who is a caricature of orientalist stereotypes out creating the sixties and turned it into, like the subversion of what we think like terrorists, stereotypes would be. So I don't really know how I feel about the real Mandarin showing up..

"Drive. San Francisco New York all the way to New York long drive. And we pretty much get to the point that they come to the conclusion that they have time travel, and which just that's something we all saw coming. Can we take a second to just appreciate the amount of time travel movies? Given shout outs during this one movie. I love how they poked fun at it. And it's funny that you mentioned Zayn rival because. Not critic reviews, but you know, the entitled comic book fan guess how they're questioning how they use time travel. Like, it's a real fake like those not real time track. There is no real time travel. I love though, that people are actually calling these entitled fans out this time around, and they're like, oh, so tell me about the time you time travel, then how does it make any sense? Yeah. I'm sorry. You know, like, I I felt a lot of people are saying it's more back to the future issues. What the I feel like it's more back to the future part two. Okay. Because I'm back to feature partout you see mardi go back to nineteen fifty five. And you see him doing what he needs to get back to nineteen eighty five. You kind of see the same thing in this movie where the avengers go to three different three different locations, or if you actually count the Tony cats. Oh, yes. Yes. True. So you got four different locations. But they go back to the kind of the greatest hits. Yeah. Well out of one. Oh, yeah. We say Dr quarreled is one of the greatest hits one of the greatest. I will say this movie absolutely made watching dark world worth it. So if you were staying away from dark world, it's worth it. You know, what movie didn't make worth it age of Altron? No, you're right. Actually there anything age of this because it's not great. It's no Pia trophy. It'll I wanted maximum to come back that would have been cool. Yeah. I will say I the one thing that I noticed is that they took a lot. They they made sure to kind of call back to the movies that maybe weren't as liked the dark world. References perfect world was I think there's a lot of dark world in here. The nineteen seventies thing is the one that I'm a little because that's for movie. I guess it's just a sumptuous that they're they're. So it's funny. It's not for a movie, but I did know unless you watch the TV shows you wouldn't catch it. The nineteen seventies is actually a really big throwback to the agent Carter TV series. So there you go. Because even when Howard's to all those the Trevor Slattery Howard stark and not the Dominic Cooper Howard stark. But when he's going into his car, he sees you see his driver Jarvis. Yes. That actor play Jarvis on the TV show agent Carter. So unless you watch the TV show, you wouldn't have caught that. Okay. So that's probably because I actually because Carter went on for a season only. So yeah, it's probably like because actually never those cute. The New York stuff was fantastic. So for any fan of the of injures, he we get a throwback to two thousand twelve and the events that go on from there. Oh, one thing we didn't mention actually which I guess. We don't wanna get into character shocks yet. And character surprises yet. I guess. Yeah. Sure. So I guess this coincides with the big characters that were changed for the movie. So right when they get two thousand twelve it is it's captain America. I remained at man. And the hulk who is now professor hopes. So a lot of people seem, and I know g I know Leo was one of them that they're you kinda wanna Thanos and hope to go at it. Absolutely. I wanted a rematch. So we didn't get that we hoped that is very docile and chew and smart. He said that he he try I think he did a trial for eighteen months to get himself to merge, so pretty much emerged himself to from Bruce banner and Holck into one one being who is now known as professor whole. I think it's hilarious right at the beginning where they get into twelve that you see the old whole smell hoax mashpee. And he's like it's so permit of. So I actually really did like that. I I love them Mark Ruffalo was really in this movie like the CGI that the way they merged 'cause they always use his face as like a base for the hall. Yeah. Like with this. But you saw a lot more Ruffalo in this version of hulk. And I think he had a lot more to do this time around absolute. That's the one is one huge huge. Takeaway for any fans of the original sixes that everyone had something to do. Yeah. This them how to really fleshed out arc wasn't just about Tony and iron man, Tony cap. And then in two thousand twelve we get the one of the great call backs for recent comic book, ARC's is captain America. Oh, yeah. You see character from winter soldier appear? And then who are not ages. She'll they are hydra and you see cap in the elevator. Callback to one of those controversial reveals in book. Greece and time that captain America is a worked for hydra. Yeah. And then in the there's a scene in elevator where he's with quote unquote shield, but really hydrant. He was Spurs hail hydra, which is a great callback for those that know that particular storyline. And then also captain America fights, captain America. Oh, yeah. Which is for us fans. We are is just like opened up like that's the phone go to movie movements and Funchal pop singles show to funk. Oh, and marvel for not giving a fuck about our pockets and lying about every single fungal that they released waving Funchal. Funchal collectors that now have watched the movie and realize that most of the Funchal pops. You got never happened in the movie. Yeah, that's rough. The biggest one that didn't happen shows shows its face next when they go to Asgard in two thousand thirteen is Thors no longer sleep and spell, we now all have Thor bodies. Yes. If it started with the Castro, and now, it's he is I would say like a close to three hundred pounds. He's a big belly. He got a big belly. He doesn't give shit which I I'll of people don't like that either. You know, the comic book, you know, titled fans, but I look at it as this is guy that blames himself everything that happened because he didn't he got he let the his arrogance. Get the best of him shadow to hymns worth to because he did a fantastic any chance he had to like show that emotional range of being tortured and failure. And like letting everyone down like killed it. You can even see right away. In the opening shower and everyone's back adventure headquarters, and you see him just sitting there reading. So that's really great. Even when he goes he goes for the head. And all yeah. And even then he says he says he did it. But it's more like I should have done this earlier, I failed everyone, and then we get to him and ask guard in a moment. You like his mom. Yes. As a as a self-proclaimed mama's boy, I'm not shamed. At all of. Yeah. Man. Again, this this scene to me was super immense. Oh, much because of the whole dark world thing because stark world, I really hate dark world with passion dark world is not a it's not they're not. None of these are terrible. I'm not saying, it's a horrible movie. But it's just like one of those movies where I wanted to much more from it. When we go over our list of our top ten list ranking yet you'll see where I ranked it but with dark world, like whatever it has a little bit of like a stain on it. It's one of the more boring of the films. But honestly seeing him having that last one what his Ma like he realized oh while my mom's still alive they're in this time period. Like, I wanna see her. I wanna see Jane too. But you know, you know, he forgot about Jane mom. Yeah. That meant so much likes chain. Now, toy shuts Natalie Portman getting up. Yes, do a cameo her just sleeping bed. Hey, look, then she came back. She came back for like a five second a lot of people thought she was in it at the premiere because she showed up to the premier. So that's funny when she came to the premier I thought she was just being the bigger person not a fan of things anymore by still going to show my support not she got a paycheck. She got out of it. But no. Yeah. Thor with his mom the Rene Russo. I mean, fantastic actress to that is I'll come on for because I forgot who she was. And I'm like watching it. I'm like she had super q like connection. With Hans words, I loved it. And her last line was great. She's like ESL.

"Good morning everybody to try to figure out exactly who Julian Assange, just he's being. I said perp locked, but they're kinda dragging them. Like one of those Golan protesters out to the the little Pattie Wagoneer from the Ecuadorian embassy. It was the actual embassador Ecuador thrown out, and he was Yellen. Something. And so you can hear you kind of part of it. I'm sitting here trying to figure it out. And then I realized what he's yelling and simultaneously. I realized who he kinda reminds me of. Ross tell me tell me if you think this is correct. I I've been Hance the audio. So I think this will give some idea of what's up. Some people call me a terrorist. I consider myself teacher. It's the Mandarin. They cut the Mandarin. Oh, man. That's was Trevor Slattery or whatever's real name is doing so either the Mandarin for Meyer, man, or Leonardo dicaprio's character from the revenue right after the bear raped him. He's it looks like he's been living in a cave somewhere in the middle or the woods which apparently exists in the Ecuadorian embassy illicit deal prospector guy you paid for goal. Yeah. That's what he's been doing seventy codes. Vo. Ye it's like, okay. We don't need western Ross again. Brigham young. He looks Brigham Young does. I'm with the Mandarin. Only because in a way that quote almost works. Some people call me a terrorist. I consider myself to teacher because you know, that that that's kind of where his heads at anyway. Judging by some of the tweets we've seen there. So yes, Julian Assange and custody, I don't know. I don't know whether going to one I don't know whether Sweden's going to once again reopen the rape case which couple years ago, they said they were they were not pursuing that anymore. But that was because they couldn't serve him. But the woman who filed basically went to police in Sweden saying the join us on raped her. Has a literally already held a little mini press conference demanding that Sweden reopened it. So I don't know they're going to and again, I don't know what happened there whatever I people getting angry at me for even bringing it up. Seriously. We're we're here to tell stupid stories give you fart studies and occasionally provide the information as it exists, and then you can make up your mind. And that's where we're at will the US extradite him. I don't know of the things she is yelling. And I mean this seriously. The there's part of it you can make out and the boosting the idea is not going to work. So I encourage you to really curious to watch some of the videos that are out there believe you say in the UK has no sovereignty the UK must resist. And it all and it also sounds like he said something about Trump. But all you can really make outage the Trump. You can't tell what he's saying. So I don't know. But and that serious that's not the the and somebody does look like as Ross put the old-timey prospector because what I heard was. Gold. But I mean, you have a good point to it could be the thing could be probably the gold. Oh, okay. I'll tell you what. We'll leave it up in the air. We'll let people decide for them fair enough. All right. Yeah. Well, then you know, you can go figure it out on your own. Let's see we got that for you. Where's this? There's one other story. I wanted to kind of pair with this. You do. I literally was just holding a story in my hand. And then I got sidetracked last minute pulling audio from Liron, man. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Speaking of well, I guess it's not criminal charges anymore because he's dead. But are you? Remember, everyone was like, oh, leaving nether land the documentary these two guys detailing her findings, and or excuse me, their experiences and. Big discussion. You know, this is this is this will finally laid arrest. Whether Michael Jackson was getting frisky with the kids. So apparently in the documentary one of the claims that's made by one of the men is of a. A an counter. Guess multiple encounters that he had with Michael Jackson when he was of twelve to fourteen years old at Neverland's train station has never land, of course, has to have a little mini train station, and it was secluded little area. And he said that Michael Jackson molested him there. Well in a New York Times piece. One of the things one of the things that there's a British journalist actually broke the story. Pointed out is that when that accuser was the age that he said he was when Michael Jackson molested him in the train station. The train station didn't exist. It wasn't built. It wasn't built until about two years after. So. The people did the film say, well, you know, the mistake here is not that the mistake is the time line of this man now, but I think that perhaps maybe somebody's owed an apology because if I remember correctly someone on the show took a very innocent picture of Michael Jackson. Where he's just showing off the wonderful art that he's installed as an archway in his house and using that to impugn his credibility. Right. It was a boy scou-. Creating an arch with like a looks like a British British toddler firefighter yet. They're high fiving and their two hands create the arch and Michael Jackson's standing underneath it and their crotch is a right at his face. Correct. And it's not a good, look and you read into that. It's bizarre. Yes. In your to your house. It'd be like that's weird. Well, I think in light of this new information, obviously, you owe somebody in apology, so well, I also, you know, high tweet out the stories, right? Yeah. When you're talking about him, so sometimes sometimes the Twitter screws up here. Yeah. And it'll post the pitcher on when I tweet at a story sometimes accidentally it'll attach the pitcher from the previous story with the story. Right. So I tweeted out report leaving Neverland discrepancy found a key part of denouncing Michael Jackson. Yeah. But the pitcher is from the story from before. So the pitcher with the Michael Jackson Temel station story is a guy cupping his butt. Goaty style. Yeah. So I apologize for that. But if pretty damn funny, how wonder what you were Iran. I looked overripe for just die bring it in. So you can see what tweeted hold on. Okay. Hold on do waiting. All right here. We go. Oh..

"What's your piece in how did that come together, my pieces for guardians of the galaxy volume two, and basically just gave me a pick and said that one I love that movie. I think it's a lot of fun James guns usage of like color and just his static value in a movie is so vibrant. And so I really wanted to do something that was filled with color and Representative of the character. There's any excuse. I get to draw for us all take it. Have you done any other recipes I've drawn every curve imaginable. Big trouble that thing overboard, whatever favorite cart Jack burden for sure hundred percent. It's hard to go around there. I love that you touched on the coloring of the film because it really fits when I think of your pops a purples, the pinks and the blues, and the greens and just explodes off of whatever piece you're doing is. It always been that way. When you've been thinking about the things you wanna do always going sort of that high contrast color. I think so vacillate between soft pastels and bright me on my favorite colors are purple and pink, basically, those colors made me happy. Now, we have a pins emojis many of those are there. There's going to be sixteen. You had to have done more than sixteen though. Oh, yeah. I've done almost every marvel characters that you care about just did a commemorative few months ago that had every single character on a, you know, everybody from Trevor Slattery to the red school to captain America to does to the black order everybody who's your favorite to draw. I really liked joined vision. He's always been kind of one of my. Favorite characters. But I always give them kind of a blank expression. Because you know, he's still learning motions and stuff love. Join captain America. I've drawn like tiny Steve before the serum. I did an animated gif of tiny serum. Steve transforming into both Steve got buff. Yeah. That's my buff stance is moral studios. Guardians of the galaxy volume to your favorite of the slate of films. It's up there. I would say like my current favorite rhinos. Maybe throw rag Narok, but that's probably a good one. And I I'm a huge fan of the first iron man when I saw the first ironman movie theater. I was kind of blown away that they had pulled it off. I was hopeful. But I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was much less kind of be the ground level foundation for what they build the whole studio on, you know, it's pretty amazing. Yeah. For sure we are later ten years truck where can fans find your.

And sterling k. Brown. The aforementioned sterling k. Brown as Quinto anyone else if I miss anyone. Yeah, Jeff. I mentioned Jeff, have you? Yeah, let you the second person. I wasn't isn't as fine droop. Here's came into this freight booth. Again, talked to me Jenny, Jenny slate. She was not here, but it was drew. Peers came into this free talk to me about month two months ago, and we had a good old at listen, a very long interview. I'll have to say I did think about cutting down into a special ultimately decided leave within the pot. But we talk about a lot of stuff and hopefully you will enjoy it here. We are me talking to droop. Here's enjoy. We're delighted to be joined on the podcast by writer and director of hotel artists. Mr. drew Pearce. How are you, sir? I'm very well, will the bet of seeing you'll charmer you'll smoothing likewise, in fact, but I'm going to start off with an appeal drew because you're you. Mr. appears for reason because that's what you used to be on Twitter. You're now Instagram, you're an active force on Instagram, but you have given Twitter to swerve and you're really good at Twitter, and I know that there were reasons why. Lift better. Saying it's been a while. So maybe now it'd be time to come back a yeast saying to me that the in the five years, since I laugh Twitter, it has become a peaceful peaceful place where people sign nice things. Each other people are so into Trevor Slattery on Twitter. That is a change. You have no idea. It's changed so much landscape, but here's the thing you can do so much these days with muting. You can do so much with the people that you filter on your feed all the all the batons you can. You can filter c. Chris, this sounds like a lot of hard work for thing that will ultimately only suck up my time. Perhaps caused me emotional dissonance. I, it's an interesting thing I managed to not be on any social media, three years, which I won't lie. I can't wonderful. Okay. But in promoting the, you know, in hotel awesomeness and kind of starting, then I least ventured onto Instagram, which I find just be a much more peaceful place. Well, as you know, I'm a big fan and I, I mentioned in three every so often on Twitter. Thank you for keeping the dream alive. Well, I think those small independent movies needle helping. I mean, we kicked off at that thing. Only made one point, three billion. One point. Two billion just between the two. Two one, five. I don't know. It wasn't one point. And now in the Gandhi. That's good. I mean, I'm still I'm still incredibly proud of that film. I think Shane and rubber and Kevin and Stephen, Bruce, who the producer and myself it was. It was really what people don't realize that marvel movies is Dell. They're like the tiny movies at haunt that made by a giant army of people veasley. But certainly in the case of three, there was a nucleus of five of those for tuna, three years, the just made that film. And so because of that easily personal it is oddly, I think he's a very Easter teric movie for a marvel movie and you know, for good for bad this some really weird shit in there as well. But I'm I, you know, I'm really proud of the fact that we made. We made a, I think we made a classic shame black movie and we did in the mobile universe and that was. Was the intention, plus I smuggled an idea that was straight of Adam. Curtis's the power of nightmares into one point, two billion dollar tempo, and that's that's something to, you know, be a good day the office, which is specifically that would be the idea that this is a spoiler Chris interns I, the ma'am during movie who is portrayed by the Bank Kingsley. It turns out he isn't the criminal terrorist mastermind that we suspect he is, but is in fact an active from Croydon. Cool..

"The next year for release next year and incredibly, they've got the cast of the original movie back together again. So that is Abigail. Breslin Jesse, Eisenberg Woody Harrelson and this actually has bloom mind little given that she is now an Oscar winner Emma stone. So they're coming back and I really liked the first film. But again, this is film I've not revisited. I'm slightly scared if I go back and re re wanted the scales befall. My is really real question is, will they have another. Celebrity Comey. Oh, dot is the big question. I do wonder about that. It's these. No, I hope as well. It's the same writers. Rhett reason, Paul were the guys who wrote the two deadpool movies with Ryan Reynolds and same director Ruben Fleischer who has lined up this movie for after phantom fracture fem does well at the box office in received critically printing supernova critically. But you mentioned Bill Murray. He was an amazing you in samba land and he is part of the cast, didn't spoil him, but you go ahead. Did you not appreciate it? Bill Murray said celebrity, did you say the bitten somebody when they go to Bill Murray, stressed, opposites on be an is hilarious bit where he. Around this house and an end. Jesse iceberg kills them things real be. That's right. And then at the end they ask them TV any regrets. He goes, no. Well, maybe Garfield. You didn't spoil at bit. I didn't know came well, I'm glad no one's here to spoil that bit then because Bill Murray is part of the cast of, I can't believe saying these words, the Jim Jarmusch directed some becoming the dead's don't die, which when it when I I listened to it at this week I was pretty sure it was a joke and I'm sure it is a joke, but I'm everyone's on. So Jim Jarmusch is directing a psalm become ADI an stars Bill Murray. Adam driver khloe seventy Tilda Swinton steeper, semi and Selena Gomez here for this details released hip out next year. There will be no plots. The whole joy of Jim Darvish movies you go in and there's no pause. I mean, deadman a guy dies for three days. That's literally Patterson. I guy goes to work and comes home for a week. That's it. Literally, nothing happens is broken flowers at a. Coffee and cigarettes, people drink coffee and smoke cigarettes, well, that about than smoking coffee drinking cigarettes, that would be more difficult, certainly, logistically. But you know. There won't be a plot and I can't wait for it. Yeah, it's, I think it's gonna feel unlike any movie we have seen previously. So he say that and and leave it at that. And it's the steps while I haven't even mentioned Evan, Rachel wood. Sterling k. Brown who are in talks to join the cast of frozen to very exciting, exciting to frozen. Very couple of teasers came out this week. One is for God Silla to with which was quite frankly nothing. They turned up to eleven. They they did. They. That's good, but that I'm sure there's going to be a full teaser trailer by the time you're out, and it's gonna be full Akron one as well and glass. We know there's a glass panel at Sunday coming home this year as well. And there was some news as well about Mark Millar's. Mila world is has announced its first slate production slate at Netflix. There's two TV shows. One is based on American Jesus, and they're three films three films as well, including empress Huck and another one that that skip to my mind. So Sharkey bounty under Sharkey bounty hunter is another one's any relation to sharpen George, the private detectives under the, I guess. So lots of stuff happening in Hollywood is you just need to take a week off every now. And again, I thoroughly recommended and just let us catch up. Can head of resolve, but that's a movie news wrapped up in a nice little bow time. Now, for our second guest, hey, is a British writer who made his Mark on blockbusters in big fashion by co, writing two thousand thirteen ironman three, depending on what that is is my favorite MC film certainly has my favorite MC, you twist. And we discussed that twist and the character that is at center flat twist. Trevor Slattery in this interview, but drew Pearce for it is he has been spending the last few years dabbling with big budget blockbusters like Sherlock Holmes, three and mission, impossible rogue nation..
