"trevor lawrence" Discussed on ESPN Daily

"That was Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence speaking to College Game Days Tom Rinaldi yesterday about what it's like being the most visible player in college football when so much about the sport and society as a whole is under scrutiny. It's not a role that Lawrence went looking for, but it found him as suddenly fell players the media even the president of the United States are all asking the twenty year old for his thoughts on everything from playing football alternate pandemic to questions of racial inequality. Today USPS Halley. Grossman. Explains how Trevor Lawrence became the center of everything. In the College Football Universe and how he's using the enormous platform he's been given. I'm Pablo Torre. It's Friday. September eleven. This. Is, ESPN. Grossman thank you for joining US ESPN daily. Thank you for having problem. Excited to be here. We're bringing you on today because you have this huge story. On ESPN. Dot Com and it's timely because preseason number one clemson is kicking off their season tomorrow against the wake forest and I think it's safe to say that no player has more is on them this season than the person you profiled junior quarterback trevor. Lawrence. He's currently the favourite to win the heisman trophy. He's also widely expected to be the number one pick in next year's NFL draft. And in any normal football season, he would be under tremendous scrutiny just based on what he does on the field but this is not an ordinary year and you write the following passage. Lawrence's captured us in a way that feels new and a little radical and more than a little paradigm shifting. He is the face of college football. In this turbulent twenty, twenty season. He's the face of all. That is tectonically shifting in the sport this fall. So what did you mean by that? What feels different about trevor is that he is more than just the preeminent player in college football. Is He a Heisman frontrunner? Yes. Is there a pretty good chance? He's going to be playing on the national championship stage for the third time in his career? Absolutely the truly he is more than just the face of the sport. He is also the agent of change his sport. Sees really just jumping into the fray when it comes to the biggest issue surrounding college football this summer, the pandemics, systemic racism amateurism, all those `Isms, right? He is just not shied away from any of them and along the way he's jumped on a phone call with the president of the United. States to really just put an exclamation point on what has been an eventful historic summer. Yeah. We're GONNA dive into each one of those one by one but I want to. Just, pause for a second. It is so much to place on anyone let alone this kid who was twenty years old so disturbing Lawrence understand the magnitude of the scrutiny that he's under. Oh, I think unequivocally the answer is, yes. I had the chance to talk to Darien venture is twenty twenty. So we talked over zoom, but daring is a running back at Clemson and he is one of Trevor's closest friends on the team. They go to Bible study together travelled together basically live at each other's homes even though they're not officially roommates and Darren I talked about that same question what does Trevor Make? Of that scrutiny and daring told me it's more than just trevor being aware of the attention paid to him. He gets that like I said, it's impossible to not get the trevor also understands the responsibility that comes with that attention. Trevor himself said just a few days ago that he doesn't consider himself an activist. He considers himself a person who has a lot of eyes on him at all times I know that. There's a lot of eyes on me. You know critics but also younger generations and people look it up to me I guess in a way I am conscious of that. I WANNA I WANNA, use my platform the right way in and try to impact people not about an activist of any sorts. But I do think I have a responsibility to move quality and to help people I love. So the notion of all of this attention being something that he is articulating embracing thriving. I want to figure out how we got to this point and it seems like to the casual football fan halley. He's always been this kind of anointed golden boy is well. Has It always been this way kind of it has. Trevor Lawrence looks like a generational talent. Laura gets it away. into. He. Broke a whole bunch of Georgia high school records previously set by a guy named Shawn Watson. And then he goes. Goes to Shawn. Watson scully, the cleansing five games into his true freshman season there. So back in two, thousand, eighteen, he takes over as starter. Lawrence. He's out of the game was sixteen for the Tigers, the brush cutters Georgia. I taste college football for Lawrence. And he reads constant the National Championship? Game Against Alabama where he just harv Nick Sabin Defense. Lawrence shutdown failed betty. Tigers force big. Orange. With Iraq. Touchdown. Ever think you'd save. Team. Beaten down like this and a championship game. When he went from being eight college quarterback to feed next rate NFL quarterback and he's been anointed a surefire number one draft pick ever since. So, let's get into the buzzsaw that is twenty twenty because it's been shredding pretty much everything but Trevor Lawrence back in March as the US is becoming this epicenter. Now of a global pandemic, he acted with a particular purpose and a strategy. What did he do? Trevor became the headline. This off season was when he started gofundme campaign, he started it with Marissa Murray who was his girlfriend at the time and is now is fiance they set out to raise funds to offer financial relief for people impacted by the pandemic they posted the campaign on a Monday in late March they race twenty, six, hundred dollars in a matter of hours and then the same. Day they were asked by the Clemson compliance office to take down the fundraiser because of NCWA rules around using players, names, images, likenesses for things like crowdfunding and doesn't go over well at all the idea that a compliance officer at a school what actually think hold on you doing something good may be in violation of NCAA rule is a reason why people give the NCW benefit of the doubt. Against very quickly releases a statement clarifying they hadn't asked trevor or Marissa to take down the fundraiser, and that indeed they were working with schools to be flexible and allow trevor and students like driver to raise money for charity. During the pandemic anybody who follows college football, we'll tell you the NC double. A. Is not necessarily a nimble organization they've offered exemptions in the past, but would they have acted so quickly come out. So publicly for the fundraiser, if doesn't have Trevor Lawrence's name attached I, don't know with this I. If you want to attract attention to something, it doesn't hurt to how Trevor Lawrence his name alongside it. And so. A couple of months later, that Dynamic Trevor Lawrence lending his name to something. To. Bring attention to a cause he cares about. It all speeds up because of the killing of George Floyd. How did Trevor Lawrence Process that? I think to understand how trevor was impacted by George, Floyd's death how.

Trevor Lawrence sparks united #WeWantToPlay movement, players association goal as 2020 season hangs in balance

"Let me ask you. You've seen this trending some of the biggest players in college football. Justin Fields, Trevor Laurence. We want to play. We saw Trey Lance at NDS you their quarterback who's going to probably be a top 10 pick. He wants to play. What do you think about the players and certain programs coming out saying Let us play, But yet here we're gonna have the conference is probably cancel it. I'll start with the players. I have a ton of respect for Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields in trail and to be honest for guys to speak out, because those guys probably more so than anyone. That plant on playing college football in 2020. They have the most to lose, right. I mean, I would say they're probably all top 10 picks. I haven't seen anything on Justin feels lately, but I know he's talented as they come. Trevor Laurence and obviously Trey Lance, but You look at those guys to speak out and use their platform for their fellow college athletes. I have a ton of respect for that, but at the same time I don't really agree with them because for two reasons, the 1st 1 being They obviously want to play the same way that I have friends that wanted to have their wedding this summer. I have you know people that want to go on trips and people that want to go visit their parents without fear of Dean, asymptomatic carrier and passing covert along to them, so people want to do a lot of things. That doesn't mean we should or that doesn't mean that we Are allowed to right now because during a global pandemic times are just different. Like I want to hop on a plane and go visit friends. But guess what? I cannot do that right now. At least I should not be doing that right now because it's in the best interest. Or of the general health of myself in the population and those around me, So we're making those sacrifices in college football is not immune to to those things, and at the same time if you're a college athlete I feel like if I was a charge of the College Football Players committee, not that they have one of those, but they had a union or something. I would have waited until the conference schedules said Hey, do you know what we are going to play football this year? And then I would use that as leverage to Seo so are being treated differently than normal students who are all at home doing virtual learning. I feel as if we should be compensated for this. And if they were gonna pay, they should be paid to play because they're essential employees now at this point, right? You have normal student at home taking classes on mine, but you're going to ask the players. To travel to pay rent to live on campus and then you know, go risk their health and their livelihood on the field. That's what in central employees, in fact is, so I don't know. I understand the competitive desire. I feel like I would probably have the same mentality. A 20 Thinking you can't touch me. I want to play college football is my senior year. But at the end of the day, I want to do a lot of things. But much smarter People tell me I shouldn't do those things.

The Fate of College Football's 2020 Season

"Ridden Berg thank you for taking a little bit of time after what is zoom is an incredibly chaotic day to chat with me. GREAT TO BE WITH IT'S A. Very historic and like you said wild and crazy time right now in college football, we figure out whether there'll be a season if there is who way. Adam Ridden Berg is scrambling to cover college football including the big ten. conference. For ESPN. Adam I want to start by rewinding a little bit actually from your perspective. What last week looked like because as a Friday, it kind of looked like we were GonNa have some college football. There was this path moving forward on that front and so if you had to make a chart. Of how things stood last week of who is in who is out who was on the fence for actually playing college football what would that chart have looked like? It's like an optimistic chart going back to two marsh but certainly even last week I still felt fairly optimistic about the possibility of a season. We had Yukon that announced on Wednesday that they weren't gonNA, play but they're independent. They're not connected to these television contracts like others are even these these group of five. Leagues. And then Thursday into Friday. He was hearing from sources around the sport that, Hey, this Mac meeting that was on Saturday in the mid American conference that was to be significant. That, there was a chance that at least one school was not going to play and others might be in the same boat and the whole league might decide at that point to postpone the fall season and football. It Yo it became clear that we were heading a lot closer to a you know a national postponement or at least a large groups of the College Football Leagues deciding not to play this fall. And so Adam you and I are talking at about six Oh five pm eastern time right now on a Monday so. What happened today and it will I guess what was the first thing that happened today on your feet? Well, again a lot we reported ESPN and others that the the big ten presidents were strongly leaning towards postponing that was on Sunday, and then you're the news that broke overnight was significant that this crash tag we WANNA play movement From Trevor Lawrence of Clemson and Justin fields of Ohio state. Some of the most prominent players in college football were getting real traction I mean this is your became the number one trending topic on twitter for a little while that was sort of the big story overnight and then today it's just monitoring. You know what's going on in the big ten. There's been reports that they've already canceled. That's not a at least as this recording that's not true. The Mountain West. Late, this afternoon did decide to postpone their seasons. So that's the second FBI's conference after the men American to decide not to play football and other sports this year. and You specifically cover the big ten that's your beat, and that's the conference. Everyone seems to be waiting to see what move comes next. So what exactly as we speak now is happening with the big ten this evening. Right. So it appears that the athletic directors are or speaking that's not a huge deal because they talking all the time now in the League but th, there's a sense of when they'll be a formal vote among presidents that hasn't taken place. I haven't heard from many sources that vote among presidents it's imminent but in theory I, it wouldn't take very long for that to take place if the League was ready to move forward with the postponement. So I think the discussions now are regarding timing whether some of the positions have changed around the conference. You've had a number of prominent coaches speak out about their desire to have. A season the big ten Pablo has always been a league. I I've covered it for a number of years that's been largely unified on the big topics and I can't remember a time where you've had a group of presidents that seem ready to postpone for the most part. But then you have many others loud voices in the league like the coaches like the players saying this isn't right. You can't do this. This is a wrong thing to do at this point and so that that's that's a unique spot for a conference has always prided itself on your equal revenue sharing and you're trying to be unified in its messaging.

Top 2021 draft prospects may bail on 2020 college football season

"All right that he's heard. College officials quietly talked about maybe approaching the NFL. Disease may be moved back to draft thought there is. Unsurprisingly, not interested from the NFL. That would be Spring College football in the Athletic Ben Standing, talking to agents, many think top prospects would bail. To season with push the spring Franken firesale. Tony let's face it the DNA. Out there and play, but I think the smart thing to do remember Leonard for net after the second season we were saying you know what don't play third year. Just wait hold out and wait for the NFL roll around I. Think the same thing for Trevor Lawrence. He's only going to hurt himself if he plays that late year. Speed. The only thing that would be good about this would be that time between when they stop playing and the draft when everybody decides that all of the not playing in the middle, there is important to how they'll be drafted. I'm ready to get done with that, but I do think people like Trevor Lawrence and others are GonNa realize that this could be a very messy. And the likelihood of looking worse than they did last year is much higher than looking better.

"And Nick foles a franchise quarterback of anybody right now. Why is this is thirteen and three years because he's not a franchise quarterback, we all we all seem to agree. That Nick foles isn't a franchise quarterback yet. He wins the Super Bowl. So just because you want. A Super Bowl does not mean you're a franchise quarterback in my opinion, Trevor Lawrence a franchise quarterback. In fact, he's A. A generational quarterback prospect, so if you WANNA do into kind of a tearless right. There's the high level quarterbacks starters, so you can win games with you can even want super. Bowl with the Ryan Tannehill Jared Goff's the Matt. Ryan's the Jimmy Garoppolo mentioned my last episode. Then there's the next level. There's the franchise quarterback skies to elevate your program. W win total everything like that. Keiler Mary. Who else you know. Justin feels I would even put in that category next year. The Joe Boroughs the to a ton of Lois people like that, and then you go to the next level, which is people who can win who he will, he will walk in Dame one in your win. Total will double. That's when you get into the Russell. Wilson's the Patrick Mahomes the march accents, and that's where I put Trevor Lawrence Watch the team who lose. Let's say the Jacksonville Jaguars go to and fourteen, and they secure Trevor Lawrence, so the ones who get the. The number, one overall pick I guarantee you. The Jacksonville Jaguars will at least when four games whichever lawrence their starting quarterback that year bearing any injuries. He is that good. He will double your win total. As soon as he walks in several orange doesn't need the greatest receivers doesn't the greatest offensive line doesn't need the greatest coach can plan. The toughest division can plan the big moments, and he elevates to that level, and he elevates your team to that level. That's what makes Trevor Lawrence so special. I don't understand the argument or the debate. How Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence wouldn't be the best quarterback in this draft and shouldn't go number one. If Trevor Lawrence came out not even this season, he'd be the number one overall pick. He would have gone way before to a ton of L. Away before Joe Borrow, he would have been number one of the bengals. Even the year before that your camera came out after Trevor Lawrence is true freshman season when he won the national championship. I guarantee you. The Arizona cardinals were taken trump arts. That's how good he is. He could have played in the NFL two and a half years. Years ago, that's how special he is I. Don't understand the debate. How Justin fields could be better than knock on Justin fields? He's not trevor. Lawrence travelers as a special type of talent are doesn't do it for this segment when we come back on the other side of the break. We're GONNA stick with football. I'm going to be going through each AFC team giving you the record prediction. Who I think will win. The Division will do AFC today and my next episode. "Sports podcast brought by the GMC podcast network. Thank you so much for listening so far just got finished talking about hopefully that new baseball deal that will be in place shortly between the players, union and the owners and the commissioner, so we will be able to see baseball here shortly. Hopefully, that gets through in the next couple of days. If not later today are I. Want to switch gears now to some college football specifically Trevor Lawrence. Because I saw something yesterday. That absolutely blew my mind a couple days or weeks ago. Pro Football Focus, which is a football analytics, you know website and tool that you know and the US from the NFL. You've seen all over ESPN things like that. They say that there is a good chance if not they completely believe that Justin fields the quarterback for. St Is a better quarterback prospect than Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence that, but a couple of weeks ago Mel, Kiper who is the lead draft analyst for ESPN said that there's a good chance or even just a chance at all that you know. Justin field is taken ahead of Trevor Lawrence in the twenty twenty one nfl draft the next NFL draft in line, and it absolutely blew my mind. Because I think we're forgetting who Trevor Lawrence is now trevor. Lawrence has one bad game you could, you could say. You could call it a bad game against the greatest college football team arguably of all time last year Lsu team, which had I believe between twelve and fifteen players drafted from that team. Now has an okay too bad game against them in the National Championship game after not losing a game in his collegiate career but I'll get into that and then. And everyone now now the discussion starting is is Trevor Lawrence. All that is Trevor Lawrence this generation quarterback prospect prospect. People were having up to be his freshman year. It was just in fields better than him. Maybe Trevor Lawrenceville. Go you know top Tan, but he won't be the first quarterback taken. Just stop it. Trevor Lawrence is one of the best quarterback prospects of all time. He is arguably the greatest quarterback prospect. We have I have ever seen in my lifetime, and it will be for a lot of people's lifetimes. He is better than show borough. He's better than to tongue of I a better than a lot of other quarterback prospects. We've seen the last quarterback prospect that I can. I can remember. That was maybe as good as Lawrence was. J Andrew Luck out of Stanford. He was also obviously really good and one of the best quarterback prospects of all time. And what do you see when that happens now? Obviously I'm telling you right now. Somebody I don't know who probably Jacksonville Jacksonville Jaguars is going to tank for Trevor Lawrence, and you might have think you. You know tanking. You might have thought the Miami Dolphins last year. We're tagging for to. You might have thought that you know. The Cincinnati bengals towards the end of the season were taking for Joe Borough. You might've even think that the cardinals Josh Rosen. We're going after Calamari towards the end of the season. Maybe maybe not. I will tell you right now. You don't know true tanking until you see what a team does for Trevor. Lawrence this year. It will rival what the Indianapolis Colts did. In Two thousand twelve for Andrew Luck, which is after Peyton, manning went down with the next surgery. The colts did not look for a viable backup option that inside a veteran and try to keep the season live. They completely were okay with having a terrible season I. think a lot of people called it the suck for luckier that that is what is going to happen for Trevor. Lawrence I. I am you right now? One a team is going to win two games max to secure them. There might be very well. Good chance that a team goes Owen Sixteen for Trevor Lawrence. Let's get into it. The Trevor Lawrence Versus Justin feels debate, which in my opinion is in a debate at all now I want to start off by saying Justin fields as another incredible quarterback prospect I would put him right up there with the to talk by LOAs the boroughs the calories you know things like that, but he's just not on the same tears Trevor Lawrence. Now Trevor Lawrence started his freshman year right away for Clemson one of the powerhouses college football multiple time What's it called College football champion? That's what Clemson has been working with. You know they weren't like this bottom to your program. Whichever Lawrence came in, they had to Shawn Watson for those years. De'andre Hopkins came through that program. Things like that, but our players like that, so his freshman year trevor! Lawrence has a completion percentage of sixty five throws for three thousand two hundred eighty yards thirty touchdowns foreigners. Wins. The national championship absolutely obliterates to its uncle by Loa in Alabama. One of the better college football programs. One of the Better College Football Teams in college football history completely dismantled blown out of the water by Trevor. Lawrence Clemson, tigers. Trevor, Lawrence gets all this high generational qb prospect best player in college football all warranted I agree with all of it now. Let's move to his true sophomore season Chew Sophomore season. So this kid is what twenty years old nineteen twenty years old, and he throws for more yards has a higher completion percentage. More touchdowns had a little bit more interceptions, but still only eight interceptions. It's ridiculous, so he threw for three, thousand, six, hundred and sixty five yards, thirty six touchdowns, eight interceptions and had A. A completion percentage that was higher at sixty six. That is ridiculous stuff, so he he followed up a true freshman. National Championship run with a better season wins the ACC yet again. Blows out. Everybody in the in the ACC goes to the national championship game has a rough game where he throws for almost two hundred fifty yards, which is considered a rough game, no touchdowns, no picks obviously loses to one of the greatest college football. Program's all time, and now we have Trevor Lawrence under a microscope. He's not all that over hyped overrated things like that and let me give you. Some players who did not start their true freshman year at least in play in every single game, their freshman, your travel. Chevron's putting all fifteen. All Right? Let's compare that to some of the other players. Some great NFL quarterbacks, and some grey college people who did not start every game in their freshman year. Patrick mahomes not start every game of his freshman year. He's pretty good. Kyla Murray sat behind. Baker Mayfield transferred from Texas am. He's pretty good to a of I. Lo- obviously is one of the best quarterback prospects we've. We've ever seen. When the second quarterback taken last year to the Miami, dolphins, he didn't play every game. Especially, your didn't play National Championship Game Joe. Borough did not got beat out by Dwayne Haskins J. T. Barrett at Ohio state had. Had to transfer to else. You didn't really pop until his fifth year senior season. That's when we talk about job or he didn't start his freshman year. Justin field apparently everybody is saying is better than Trevor Lawrence now did not was not handed the keys. At Georgia People Forget. He committed to Georgia Georgia, said No. We still like Jake. FRAHM will turn over to you problems and NFL quarterback now for the Buffalo Bills and Justin fields obviously transferred to Ohio state. All those players did not start their freshman year including the Shawn Watson so to Shawn, Watson was obviously I. Clemson only played half of his freshman season. All of these players Justin Fields Joe Borough to some people are believed I believe I'd rather than Trevor Lawrence. Specifically Justin Fields. Let alone the fact that Trevor Lawrence started his freshman year, but to start your freshman year throw thirty touchdowns four interceptions over three thousand yards, sixty five percent completion percentage in national championship. What is there to nitpick what is there to not like? He be out Kelly Bryant, who was a great quarterback for Clemson had them ranked in the top to every single year. They're. Dabo Swinney, one of the Better College quarterbacks college. Excuse me, college football, head coaches, said no Kelly Bryant. You've done great for this program. Travelers can take the next level. He wasn't rock. That is how Special Trevor Lawrence's. He is.

"By declining his fifth year option. Foles big favorite to get the nod. According to Fox bets FOLES IS AT MINUS ONE thirty three to be the starter in two thousand twenty. Bisky as is at plus two thirty five so foles is looking like he's going to be the starter. Which is I mean. That's that's what we are certainly what I'm expecting. I don't know what necessarily to make of Nick. Foles on probably higher on him than most people I also. I feel feel like we know what by now. We know what both of these guys are. So if Nick foles is what he is and Trubisky as we should ceiling. I would rather go with Nick. Foles in this situation again. Having a quarterback competition to me is that means. You don't really have any faith in either one of these guys. If that's the case I very much believe in saying this guy's starter even if it can change later on in the season at least you you up designated a clear leader. The team knows who they're supposed to be following who they're supposed to be getting their direction from as opposed to well the rest of us are just going to get ready for the season and then they'll figure out let us know who are guy is. I don't like that mentality going into a season fair enough. I get joy with news. That's the news and thanks for stopping by heard lying so Thursday the NFL releases its schedule eight PM Eastern so. We already know who everybody place. You can. Google your favorite team. The teams are there. You know where they plan home or away so it's all there you just don't know the order of it. The order matters. I think one of the things that really unraveled Baker Mayfield was In in year two was the beginning of the season. He faced so many elite defensive coordinators or defenses that just unraveled the entire season. He lost confidence. People lost confidence in him. And you just couldn't they just couldn't get going the placement of when you play Games Matters. I'll give you two teams Cincinnati's very interesting. There's already enormous pressure on jober start immediately not TA's probably a shorten camp start in a great division with the worse roster in the division. That's not debatable. That's a lot of pressure but if you look at the bengals opponents they face similar teams they face the Jaguars who are tanking the giants who are building Washington's rebuilding Miami's rebuilding. Houston's had a noisy off season if they could play those teams earlier September early October. Big Advantage for Joe. Borough what you don't want is that game against Baltimore Philadelphia at Philadelphia at Pittsburgh. I don't even think you WANNA play Cleveland early or Tennessee last year. Cincinnati couldn't stop the run Tennessee early. So Cincinnati schedule is going to be very easy. Does it slowly allow Joe Borough to two and one three in? Oh they can be competitive people now. You get certain momentum we all know. Football's always been about momentum. The big play changes the game. Also the Green Bay Packers Green Bay schedule has got four teams that now have either a new quarterback and renew system they face Carolina new coach new system new quarterback they face the bears. Nick foles probably going to start new QUARTERBACK TAMPA BAY new system for Tom Brady. Indianapolis Philip Rivers if Green Bay could get Carolina Chicago at least once Tampa and Indianapolis earlier than later. Big advantage for green bay because Aaron Rodgers and Matt Leur are now in their second season together so And you could say it. It may only mean one or two wins. That wouldn't have been wins but I'd rather face Brady in September than I would in December it matters so I think the order of it is why I get so freaked out about the first thing. I always look at with NFL schedules. It's always been this way I look at. How many of quarterbacks do you face that are better than yours? So the good news for Joe. Borough is Gra Cincinnati. Schedule isn't loaded with a lot of pro bowl. Quarterbacks Lamar Jackson twice Big Ben Twice Carson. Wentz wants to Shawn Watson wants then. It's old Philip rivers. We don't know. Baker may feel Daniel Jones Gardner Minzhu so that Cincinnati's got the one thing I like Joe Borough if he's as good as everybody claims I don't think he is. I think he's fine. He's a B Plus Prospect. Not an a plus. But they don't face a lot of rigorous pro bowl quarterbacks so if they get a break was scheduling to. They're on that five and a half over under. I probably take the over right now. I say under 'cause I don't think they're going to get the scheduling break. John Middle Cops former. Nfl Scout Friend of mine on the heard podcast network. Why can't Cam get a job? Why wouldn't Jamus fetch much either on the market? We'll talk about that. And Borough Mel Kiper saying Oh did job role would be number. One of Trevor Lawrence came out. I just don't see it. That's not what any. Nfl General Manager Scouting director told ME OVER THE LAST YEAR. Not One even after the lsu hammering clemson be sure to catch live editions of the heard Weekdays at noon eastern nine am Pacific John middlekauff former NFL scout for the Philadelphia Eagles. He has a podcast three out with John. Middlekauff on the heard. Podcast network a buddy of mine and You know we were talking about Just a second ago. The importance of schedules the first thing I look at. Who's your quarterback? And how many quarterbacks will you face probably better than yours? So Joe Borough the the bengals. Ross dingle schedule. There's not a lot of pro bowl quarterbacks there's Carson wentz there's big band layers the Mara couple times and it's a bunch of kind of guys in developing teams but I. I do think schedule matter some for team like Cincinnati. Do you. Well you know. We all love the schedule release. It's really fun. Nfl unlike definitely basketball and even baseball. There's so much turnover every year right. So many teams go worst. I you think a team is going to be good. And then they they go from twelve wins. The seven wins or vice versa. But I think for borough in that division where you play the Ravens who we know are going to be good the steelers won eight games with duck. Hodges and Mason Rudolph. They have an excellent defense. So that's going to be tough. So do you play them early? Play them late. When do they stack up? And even the browns. I mean they then a dumpster fire for years but they do have a lot of talent. I I do think it matters a little bit for a young quarterback where he kind of starts out. Does he get to start out. A couple games at home. It on the road especially this year Colin think about it the OT. As are you know not happening? I know they're doing virtual meetings two hours a day four days a week or whatever but that that is just not the same. I mean listen as or not bear Bryant Double Days but there is a lot of learning and for a quarterback taking in a new offense learning some new teammates. Getting some timing down with guys. He's never played with is really important. And that's just simply not going to take place over the next couple of months. Ob J said he said this is going to be my time in my season. And I look at. Oh bj anything. Okay Cleveland Acquired Hooper. Jarvis Landry is of volume Guy Kevin. Stansky doesn't throw the ball. A ton of some of that may be the directive of Mike Zimmer but kirk cousins was only twenty fourth in pass attempts so I look at Lbj. And I think to myself listen. Happiness is tied expectations. If he had seventy catches I'd be I would actually be a little surprised right. I would tend to agree. It'll be hard for him to have the production from those first couple years from the giants when he was clearly their. Go to guy and you know you know head and shoulders above the rest in this offense you know one thing was the fancy last year Minnesota when Dalvand Cook was healthy and on the field they they slammed it down your throats and this team has multiple running backs but what cousins did have some big moments throughout the year when digs was had his mind right and was playing He had deep several times so I think they use the deep threat in this zone. You know offense Kyle. Shanahan does McVeigh has Kyle did when he was in Atlanta. When you have a speed guy and you're running you can hit some big shots but the volume of targets to me probably will not be there because like you said the tight end. They love the tight ends in this offense and Jarvis Landry is just consistent guy assuming he's healthy you know when the season starts just over the middle. It's an easy target for quarterback. Let's face it Colin coming off a terrible year and just needs to kind of get the train back on the track. John middlekauff joining US former Scout. Done talk show stuff. He's a part of the heard podcast network. He was a scout for the Philadelphia Eagles. jalen hurts for the eagles goes second round little high but I get it I if I think he'll be fine over time. If there a first round you know less we know this that we just had half the first round and get their fifth year option picked up. There's GonNa be a lot of bus in the first round. Are there one or two first round guys that you just don't know if they fit because to me fit is so crucial in this league? Isaiah Simmons that could be a bus. Because I'm not sure what the FIT is right? I call and he's just not a plug and play player. I I get the media you know thought as the next night. I don't know Lawrence Taylor meets Ed read. But he's the guy that all my buddies in the NFL just said when you really studied them. You better have Todd Bowles or bill. Belichick moving him around his defensive coordinator at Clemson makes over two million dollars the highest paid coordinator in the country. Why because he's elite Bread Venables Well Vance Joseph? The last three years has led atrocious defense for two years when he was the head coach in Denver. Unlike when Wade Phillips running the defense fell off and was bad last year in Arizona. I it was. It was really really bad now. Steve Time historically has hit on a lot of you know kind of a versatile players like this Dion Buchanan The Honey Badger have had success with that type of player. Bad Todd Bowles moving those guys around. I don't see it with Vance Joseph and it's not like Cliff Kingsborough can add much Colin. He is not a defensive guy. He's an offensive guy. Only in historically his defense defenses then terrible. So who's WHO's helping? Isaiah films to be put in the right position in Arizona. I'm not disputing his physical attributes because they're special rights. All we can run. You can move all over the place but those guys sometimes need the right coordinated. This is a coaching league. We've seen a lot of talented players. Go to the wrong scheme or the wrong team and not play. Well I got that one a little red flag for sure. I've said what Joe Borough. Yesterday Mel Kiper said He and Trevor Lawrence if they came out in the same class you'd take Joe Borough Slam Dunk and I think we're getting to the point. Now where the hype the mythology of Joe? He could not beat out. J. T. Barrett or join haskins. Trevor Lawrence came in as a kid and essentially they sat the Clemson quarterback who was twelve and to just sat him. Said this kids better when I look at Trevor Lawrence and I talked to my guys in the NFL. They're like. Oh this is like Andrew luck stuff. This is he's got to be a little more command. At the line of scrimmage but it looks like no myths are we over hyping borough now like is it becoming a to me. It feels like pump. The brakes borough. Well I think he just had such a historic year at a just a massive program in a you know I think I. I read a staff the SEC West had more first round picks. Then I think the ACC in the big ten combines so what he did in that conference and and on that side of the conference against the best talent was remarkable and then it from really wants the SEC championship and the in the two playoff games. But we act like Trevor Lawrence has played football. He's he's also played in four playoff games. Now the game against lsu he was he was atrocious. But you know Michael Jordan at bad games right I mean Mickey Mantle struck out. And I'm not saying he's going to be those guys football player but you can have bad games. He's going to have three or starting when it's all said and done. I think Trevor Lawrence would have been in this draft for example the bengals. I know you've talked about. This are such conservative organization. It would still be easy to take Joe Borough but I think if you gave a lot of the younger general managers the more aggressive teams. They would have no problem. And I mean none taken Trevor Lawrence Number One. I still think he is in line to be the top pick but we see something's change you know. I thought SAM DARNOLD was locked to go one and Baker. Mayfield going over them. We'll see how justin fields comes out. But I I say. At worst case scenario coming into this season he the top to pick and I I would still lean. He'll be the number one pick When the draft comes around next your minute left Dak Prescott. What's he supposed to make the Andy Dalton Move? What do you make of it? Why just at Worst Dak Prescott Leverage who who's Jerry Jones being against we James Winston Cam Newton? These there's nowhere for them to go whereas if he rescinded the Franchise Tag. Where's he getting thirty? Five plus million in Andy Dalton had an awful year last year but he's had a lot of success when he was on really good teams. I like Dak Prescott is and I would love him for twenty five million. I just I have a hard time paying thirty five million dollars when he's already proven. He can't really carry the franchises team. So good when you pay a guy that much money. The rams are a good example. You have to get rid of guys at you know next year the following yet..

"Line news. One of my favorite all time players marshawn lynch came out of retirement, rejoined the seahawks for the end of last season. The little spark, and he said on Sportscenter last night that it's possible. He comes back again for twenty twenty. Almost on that expect the unexpected, but I mean just as far as right now. What I do know is I'm Akiva Charlotte Nike is? My agent have been at talk with a with Seattle Show said we'll see what happens to work out and they I mean, and I give back dipped here and is what it is and I mean if not I'm living good so I really trip to. The best it's it's not out of the realm of possibility I mean. Nobody really thought he was coming back last year, and he came back in. You know. Did we need to do for a short amount of time? Frank? Gore to signed a one year deal with the jets. He turns thirty seven this month. you know there's there is no age anymore and he also. Star if marshawn can common the you know like Frank Gore. He's a good blocking back. You can catch the pass occasionally. I mean you're not asking marshawn lynch to be a twenty-seven. Kerry game back right. Of course there's there's many different roles especially at the running back position. He came back before week seventeen of last season after all the injuries to the seahawks Backfield Rashad Penny towards ACL, Carson under fractured hip, and he just turned thirty four in April, so he's actually much younger than Frank. Obviously Frank is You know in a different category altogether. He's he's. Just unbelievable career, but I'm excited to see this happens. It's you know. Keep keep playing long as you can. Marshawn Lynch is is a you know he's A. He's his own man. He's GonNa. Do whatever suits him the best, but looking forward to see if that is seeing if that happens, so peyton manning has been preparing for a potential management role in the NFL since his retirement, he's visited various teams and pick the brains of coaches in GM's about what it takes to run a team, but the right opportunity just hasn't come yet. He told bleacher report I've had I have had conversations with different people, but I've never had a formal contract offer nothing writing. I've had football conversations that I. Think are probably gauging my. And, I'm asking them questions about what their direction is just not something that I have moved on yet. I I don't I don't even know if does he have to work? I'm sure he doesn't have to work, but just because he doesn't. He has the funds to not work doesn't mean he doesn't want to not have work to do for the rest of his life. He's still you know a a young man as far as. The workforce goes, but you WANNA have something to channel your passion and competitiveness and energy into but I mean there's been a lot of talks about him going into broadcasting as well which would be you know incredible on you know calling games, but I I don't know it's a lot of pressure in a lot of work to run a team. It's very different than than you know being. Being in the booth calling a game once a week. That's a whole different workload. That's that's your life. That's your whole life running, and if money was the same and people will be surprised by this I'd much rather be general manager than a football analyst. Really if money was the same. Oh I the idea of building your building business like to me, you know my brain works i. I probably should have majored in architecture building stuff the idea that I could run an NFL franchise. Is You know I'm not qualified. Never GonNa get that opportunity obviously, but I to me. I think I have the best job in America I really do I. Talk Sports I can literally go home and watch games, and that's where they get paid for it. I think the second best job in America is an NFL general manager. So, much word I. will you know what it's everybody? I'm not saying it's not an amazing job and very rewarding, but it is not like you're you're a phone is on twenty four seven. You have to answer to the owner. You have to answer to fans. You have to answer to season ticket holders. You have to deal with players you have to put together plans with coaches. You have to stay on the same page with coaches. You have an organization to run that so much responsibility I don't think I'd be great deal with fans, but I would deal well with. Your paycheck as a GM A. PAYCHECK right here. For listening to I'm saying you're going to work the extra hours. If you are an NFL jam, which is like a big commitment which is why paid meetings taking his time to decide where he wants to end up doing that if he does decide to do that, so the bears are planning to have an open competition between Mitchell trubisky Nick foles to be the team started this year, but now the bears of moved further away from Trubisky by declining his fifth year option. Foles is a big favorite to get the nod according to Fox bets foles is at minus one, thirty three to be. Be The starter in two thousand twenty Bisky as is at plus two thirty five, so foles is looking like he's going to be the starter. which is I mean that's that's what we are. Certainly what I'm expecting I. Don't know what necessarily to make of Nick. Foles on probably higher on him than most people I also i. feel feel like we know what by now we know what both of these guys are. So if Nick foles is what he is and Trubisky as we should ceiling I would rather go with Nick. Foles in this situation again, having a quarterback competition to me is. That means you don't really have any faith in either one of these guys. If that's the case I very much believe in saying this guy's starter, even if it can change later on in the season, at least you you up, designated a clear leader, the team knows who they're supposed to be following. Who they're supposed to be getting their direction from as opposed to well the rest of us are just going to get ready for the season, and then they'll figure out and let us know who are guy is i. don't like that mentality going into a season. Fair enough. I get joy with news. That's the news and thanks for stopping by. Heard lying so Thursday the NFL releases its schedule eight PM. Eastern, so we already know who everybody place you can Google your favorite team? The teams are there. You know where they plan home. Or away, so it's all there. You just don't know the order of it. The order matters. I think one of the things that really unraveled Baker Mayfield. Was in in year two was the beginning of the season he faced so many elite defensive coordinators or defenses that just unraveled the entire season. He lost confidence. People lost confidence in him and you just couldn't. They just couldn't get going the placement of when you play games. Matters I'll give you two teams. Cincinnati's very interesting. There's already enormous pressure on jober start immediately. Not? Ta's probably a shorten camp start in a great division with the worse roster in the division. That's not debatable. That's a lot of pressure, but if you look at the bengals opponents, they face similar teams. They face the Jaguars who are tanking the giants who are a building Washington's rebuilding Miami's rebuilding. Houston's had a noisy off season. If, they could play those teams earlier September early. October big advantage for Joe Borough. What you don't want. Is that Game Against Baltimore. PHILADELPHIA, at Philadelphia at Pittsburgh I don't even think you WANNA play Cleveland early. Or, Tennessee last year, Cincinnati couldn't stop the run Tennessee early, so Cincinnati schedule is going to be very easy. Does it slowly allow Joe Borough to two and one three in. Oh, they can be competitive people. Now you get certain momentum. We all know football's always been about momentum. The big play changes the game. Also the Green Bay packers. Green Bay schedule. Has Got. Four teams that now have either. QUARTERBACK and renew system. They Face Carolina, new coach new system new quarterback, they face the bears nick foles probably going to start new quarterback Tampa Bay new system for Tom Brady Indianapolis. Philip rivers if Green Bay could get Carolina Chicago at least once, Tampa and Indianapolis earlier than later big advantage for green bay because Aaron Rodgers and Matt Leur are now in their second season together so and you could say it. It may.

"trevor lawrence" Discussed on The Herd with Colin Cowherd

"Meals on the ground, we were approaching it from the vantage. Point of it's not just meal served its jobs saved, and those are the two metrics that really mattered in this, and they also really mattered to Bank of America. We're so grateful to Bank of America for supporting. Here's something good and for supporting organizations across the country who are on the frontlines addressing medical response capacity food insecurity access to learning and providing support to Bonobo populations. I'm Kim. As a rally listened to hear something good on the iheartradio APP apple, podcasts, or wherever you listen to your favorite shows. So Joe Boroughs a nice quarterback prospect. He's not nearly as talented justin fields or certainly. Trevor Lawrence the Clemson quarterback. But. It's an remarkable to me. That because Joe Berle on a significantly better team. At twenty three years old, he'll be twenty. Four soon beats a twenty year old Trevor Lawrence with an inferior team Clemson. Lsu was a better team they had fifteen guys drafted five in the first round or fourteen guys drafted this year five in the first round. That's insane. And, there's an argument to be made and I don't have a lot of pushback. That Lsu is the best college football team for a season. Ever I don't have a lot of pushback. They beat seven top twenty five teams or Something? I don't have it in front of me, but it's it's. It's hard, argue they beat everybody and often convincingly, but Mel Kiper was on ESPN show this morning. Get up and he's talking about well. Because of that game, you saw Berle's way better than Trevor Lawrence as a prospect avenue see those on the field, and that final game Saint Joe Borough wouldn't have gone number one over Trevor Lawrence Lawrence struggling and the game prior to that against Ohio, state until I can say. Left that football game that game turn so I think no, no question. Joe Borough would have been a lot guaranteed to be the number one pick the bengals. were. Not a single GM I know thinks that not one. Joe Boroughs of fifth year, twenty three year old senior. Who didn't do, anything could not beat out. Jt Barrett, Dwayne Haskins. Couldn't beat out J.. T. Barrett so scout team guy in the League Trevor Lawrence was so good. that. He goes to Clemson The coaching staff says Kelly Bryant your twelve and to last year. Sit down. Nineteen Year olds better. Trevor's. He's twenty now. It night team, he walked into a program that was on fire. That in one a national championship here's Kelly. Bryant goes twelve to the next year. They sat him for a nineteen year old. Highschool not close I saw trevor. Lawrence play Nice school bigger than barreau stronger better arm bigger hands, better athlete everything. This is totally unfair as a freshman Trevor Lawrence Thirty touchdowns for picks. No redshirt year. Just go play. It's not close. To say that Berle beat Trevor Lawrence head-to-head proves anything is Nick foles better than Tom Brady because I. Watch the Super Bowl. What does that prove Larry Bird's team beat Michael Jordan lot so did Isaiah Thomas. His team doesn't prove anything Michael is better. So this. Downgrading Trevor Lawrence because he lost a probably the best college football team ever makes no sense. In fact, there's article today. Joe Borough draws concerns from anonymous NFL general, Manager. He's Alex Smith like according to Mike Sando, Mike's really good. The athletic the GM compared borough to Alex Smith. He said quote. He doesn't have a lot of power. Strengthen his arm at all. He's a one year producer. Love his brain his short accuracy. He's Alex Smith. In fact, burroughs six four to twenty, smith was six four to thirteen. They're even built like I've said boroughs more Tony. Romo, but I think Raimondo Alex Smith. Talent wise pretty darn close I take Romo by an inch. So I, just think it's incredible. That because of a singular game trevor, Lawrence had never lost a football game till Lsu and people say well, you know. He struggled against Ohio State. Against Ohio State Trevor Lawrence threw for two hundred sixty yards to TD's. No picks rushed for one hundred seven yards, and a touchdown and they won. That struggling and that was the best Ohio state team. People said ever people were saying that was the best big ten team ever. So, I think it's incredible. How unfair we are to this kid! He's a really Nice quarterback prospect. Trevor Lawrence. is almost four years younger than him. He's a kid..

How "Lil' Ol' Clemson" Overcame the Odds

"Here today to talk about Little Clemson. First of all where where did that name come from. Davos swinney has been using it basically since he took over as the head coach back in two thousand eight and I know we're not supposed to be here. We're does willow beer but we about the Tigers man. I'm so proud and just quickly remind us. How much has little clemson accomplished in the last five years? And how do those accomplishments stack up against some of the all-time great teams. This will be their fourth national championship game in the past five years and obviously they have won. Two of the past three national championships backpedaling Lawrence flips absorb open wide open just native. Where's the pen strengthens? Its the championship game really witnessing one of the all-time great runs right. After or maybe you know in conjunction with the dynasty that Alabama has had attack territory with very likely a victory formation and a fifty fifth win but this clemson senior class. The Tigers Tigers reclaimed their crowd by four Alabama. We are really truly talking about one of the great runs. We've seen in this sport and yet they seemingly get no respect at least if you listen into what Dabo Sweeney has to say we win to the team that beat South Carolina. And it's we we get clemson out. It's the dad gummed state so it's big because you know they can't vote us out. I mean we gotta we gotTA WE GOTTA go thirty. You know I mean we got no choice forced but Stewart I wanted to talk to you about some of the things Clemson has had to overcome to get where they are today because in some ways it makes her accomplishments even more remarkable. So let's start with the schools location. This is a school that is in the tiniest towns announced in college football. The main drag is a half mile if that they have one of everything and only one of everything one starbucks Fox Walmart. You've got this eighty thousand seat stadium hundred fifty thousand people rolling into the town on the weekends. it's incredible bull and but then they all leave. You know Monday through Friday. We kind of have our own world and it's named Clemson. It's not named university. University of their state and Frankly University of South Carolina has a much bigger fan base in that state. CLEMSON's not even the biggest Followed team in their own state. And I imagine it's harder to build that fan support when you don't have the state name in your school's name 'cause fans can identify so strongly with the state there from. Yeah I mean obviously the one big exception in College Football History Notre Dame that has a true national following but that goes all the way back to the nineteen twenties and and new rockne is taking them on the train and playing games all around the country. It's truly unique when you think about the kinds of programs that we're used to seeing at the top of the polls the Alabama is the Ohio states. It's the US's these are schools with big huge national fan. Bases Clemson truly is still even with all the success mostly a regional school well and a lot of people might not realize this but clemson has had to recruit locally for the most part I mean. It's remarkable if you look at their roster. How many of the guys as our from North and South Carolina Georgia in Tennessee every program? You know the the core of their recruiting class is going to be in their backyard. But clemson's up until recently. He was almost entirely from their backyard. And really that mirrors Funston as a school their alumni base something like seventy percent of the alums live in three states South Carolina North Carolina and Georgia. This is not the kind of place where anywhere in the country you go. You're going to find clumps in Bar And one other big thing. That's working against Clemson. Is They play in the ACC weaker conference where where they don't really have a rival and it's almost like people forget about clemson during the regular season because you know they don't have very many marquee games. Yeah everybody watched. Trevor Lawrence and Travis E. T. N. and and T- Higgins in last year's national championship game and saw how great they they were and then the season starts in people. Stop watching the game. They played against Texas. Ain't ammon week to was the most watched game they played this season A little over six million viewers. That was not even one of the top twenty most watch games in college football this season. And if you look at that list of the top Twenty Games Ohio Hi oh state was in five of them. LSU was in four of them Michigan. who wasn't even all that good was in three of them? When talks about lack of respect the thing that bothered him most is this year? was that none of those star players Trevor Lawrence WHO everybody assumes will be the number one pick when he's coming off his junior season travis? CTN has been one of the best running backs in the country the last three years. None of those guys made the heisman ceremony. And none of those guys were even finalists for the award for the best is player at their position in. That's not because they're not great players. It's because nobody watched them this season. How has clemson been able to overcome some of these kind of systemic? Systemic challenges. The fact that they aren't this historical powerhouse. The fact that they're in this tiny town in the middle of nowhere South Carolina would have been the keys to to them building this program into what it's become. Yeah well it really all starts Dabo swinney. He is a extremely unique personality in college. Football one moment along the way that I think have stuck with everybody was Dave beat Notre Dame in practically a monsoon in twenty fifteen regular season and they interview him after the game on. ABC what nine listen. We're giving scholarships give you stipends in tails in a place to live. We're giving nice uniforms. I give you good service tonight. It was big. Well Gee Bring Your own God put some dads and to me that personifies daboh like. That's not something. Most coaches coaches would say in a post game interview and kind of set the tone I think from their Dabo. Swinney is the fun coach. He's the coach who when they built their new football facility. They put in a PUTT. PUTT course welcome to the outdoor pavilion miniature. Golf Renfro just happened to catch the game winner in the National Championship Against Alabama. We'll see what he's got here. Your place on Punsalan rest for the weary. We'll at hunter and so that became their brand there. The Fun School there the place you want to go if you WANNA play college. Football get an education education and have a lot of fun doing it and to amplify that message. Clemson was really ahead of the curve. I think With how they used social media to appeal to recruits they are constantly putting out videos And other images that show exactly that that show that take you inside side. The Locker Room and inside the facility in show you how much fun they're having Show you Dabo swinney dancing in the locker room after a win Stewart. How would you describe Devil's dance? Moves dance moves are about a clunky and awkward as you'd expect from a middle aged dude but but certainly in keeping with his his personality. There's also a video that they posted of Disney filming a football ball movie at Clemson last night. Any five thousand people here. We have to shoot three plays and the entrance from valley in a half of a half time. Half time the real players went off the field and a whole bunch of actors and Clemson. Uniforms came running onto the field and the and the the crowd cheered them on. And and you know made it seem like a real football game and the footage is going to be spectacular. It's one of the three loudest crowds in Clemson visit history. And what role has the rest of the Clinton coaching staff played in the rise of the Tigers when Dab oh I started getting a going at Clemson they weren't a national powerhouse yet. They were starting to get better. He did something that was a little unusual at the time and basically took a lower salary for himself in order for them to spend more on. assistant coaches. Because at that time. They weren't necessarily rolling in money like some of the programs that they were trying to compete against. They they were paying their coordinators top dollar money and those coordinators played a huge role. I mean they were the ones that certainly Chad. Morris was the one that recruited and coach Sammy Watkins Skins and certainly does Shawn Watson. The guys that got this run started now. They are rolling in money. An data was making nine million dollars a year. And that's you know that there's no longer a disadvantage for Clemson. But they were very smart about how they went about managing that in the early years of this run.

College Football Playoffs

"We mentioned were three three and a half hours away from the College Football playoff show on. ESPN where will everyone follow so much. Interesting where Alabama is going to be because I think we know who the top three are going to be joining us on the day of once again. Always great to have south on so seth. Let's talk about the the the elephant in the Room Alabama. What what do you know about them? And what are the are the projections. Now we think that Alabama is still very much in this playoff race and they're actually not in a bad spot at all we give him the fourth best shot to reach the playoff at forty one percent. And if you're an Alabama fan what he cares if they win out. Where where do you stand and at eleven and one we put Alabama Emma at a sixty nine percent chance to get into the College Football playoff? That's according the playoff predictor and I think it really comes down to their schedule which a lot of people knock it. We're we're saying is really really not as bad as people think if you compare that to say Oklahoma schedule Alabama. We'll have three games. that are tougher than Oklahoma's toughest games and toughest office game. And if you compare the two if Alabama eleven one and Oklahoma's at twelve and one according to our numbers is about twice as hard to go eleven to one Alabama schedule as it is to go twelve and one with Oklahoma's take that boomer sooner. Listen let's get to the next most asked question on this program Ken to SEC teams get into the playoffs. Yeah absolutely in fact not only absolutely we put at fifty six fifty seven percent chance of big thing the happened over the weekend was not just the Lsu Alabama game but penn state going down. That really helps open the door for the to put two teams in so there's a few different ways. He's this could happen. I mean I think the obvious one is is the one that most people think of. LSU continues to roll they win the SEC. Alabama gets at eleven to one but there are other scenarios. What of Georgia tr? You know what if they went out and they end up winning the SEC and And be an otherwise undefeated. LSU So there's a couple different paths for the SEC. And we think that some combination of those teams teams is a decent shot. The two of them will get in. So let's talk about Ohio State no issue because I was just gonNA use myself an example ask you to psychoanalyze. I analyse me and be nice to me. I had Ohio state number one all of a sudden. I go to Tuscaloosa Saturday win and I checked the box next morning. LSU number one. Explain the differences between these two teams. Paul I'm with you so I don't have much to offer. I can't call you crazy here today. I look here's the difference right so. LSU In Ohio state or wanted to record but if you look at that doesn't tell the whole story so Lsu and average top twenty five team to be undefeated with LSU schedule. We only think there's a one percent chance an average top twenty five team could pull that off whereas for Ohio state is a sixteen percent chance they had an easier road so much more They LSU tigers have accomplished much more than Ohio state and so to me they deserve to be number one Given the win in over Alabama. Now I want to get to Clemson for a second. Because they are the forgotten team of twenty nine thousand nine. They started Out as the reigning Champs Trevor Lawrence and and you know they play these Games on Saturday night and we all go okay. Is there anything else on. Because they're so dominant ever since that Early Season Sneeze against North Carolina so I mean they have any chance of missing plus so I mean. Obviously they'd have to lose wouldn't they. Yeah they have to lose but I think that if they do you end up with Clemson really being a lot of trouble. I'm with you. I feel like I've ever even talked about Clemson. Their schedule is so easy that If I was looking at it just now from top teams perspective. You look at Clemson's schedule it's easier than like Yukon schedule or two lane. I I mean you're talking about a bunch of group of five teams. Have easier schedules. Someone you know said to me and I so I ended up looking at. HOW WOULD UCF schedule two years ago? Compared to Clemson uh-huh in this year Clemson's is harder. Don't get me wrong. It's the eightieth hardest schedule by that measure and UCS was ninety six. But you're not talking about something that's that far off and so the point is look if they went out fine. They're one of the best teams in college football but if they lose we would almost be very unlikely at that point for Clemson actually get in so we don't have wiggle room speaking of unlikely the fact that we are talking now about Baylor in Minnesota might be the longest shot of the college football season so help us understand do either one of them have a clear path to the playoffs assuming they check all the boxes I think they have a clear path in terms of winning. The problem is just that it's really unlikely. That either GONNA win Minnesota specially we give them just a one percent chance to win out. They have a tough game at Iowa before having to go Face Wisconsin and the big ten championship game so Minnesota would be an underdog at three of its final four games. Here's the good news for the GOPHERS. Though it was I was just running the numbers if they were to lose to Iowa and then went out right so then that means beating Wisconsin and going and beating probably Ohio state in the big ten championship game. They would still have a shot at twelve one which stunned me. But at twelve and one in that scenario they would have beaten Penn state. That would have been Wisconsin and they would be no Haya state so we think they actually would have a chance to get get in the problem. Of course is what I go back to what I said at the top. It's just so unlikely that they're going to be able to pull that off that they have a lot of work to do before consider them realistic contenders. Just one more thing before you go. Let's talk about Georgia and I know they have a very tough game this weekend. At Auburn Auburn they get to Atlanta. I mean there are a couple of combinations about Georgia that say lose to Auburn and then they beat. Lsu where are they. Yeah that's a really fun. Scenario right I if they do that well. We think that Georgia probably would not get in as a two loss as he C- champion. What I think we'll be wild is that you could have a situation where to SEC? Teams could get into the playoff and neither of them would be the champion in that situation because Lsu can get in an Alabama could get in given the two losses for Georgia there. We think it would just end up holding them out with any other. Good teams Can they win if they win the SEC. With one loss there are there are almost guaranteed a spot that second loss would probably be the end for them in other words. You're saying Alabama fans are GonNa Screaming War Eagle Saturday afternoon. I think they ought to be absolutely always great to have you on your next Tuesday. Thanks Paul thank you and our most of our most anticipated guests of the week breaking it down okay. We don't make this stuff up a lot of people said you're just doing roll. He was criticized during like he was always not trying to get an extra yarder to but as i looked down and it came up because of all the injuries and not being they will get out of bounds and doing the right thing. What was he just way ahead of his time or do you cover football. Then emmett smith made east ended his career running out rebounds like crazy yeah so look if you play this game gives you plenty tough trying to. There'd be the time that i need to get that yard. "What's going to happen to them? But, but I have empathy for these recruits who come in and honestly want to choose a school. And so k this is where I wanna play. And then it apparently the the strategizing that you thought was over when you made your. Choice just begins when you get there. And if you say you're Tate Martell in Ohio State, even really played yet. And you already transferring out because now they're bringing a guy from Georgia who's coming into a place 'cause he got replacement Magai Georgia. So that's all I'm saying is is introducing. I'm just trying to understand when you say the you worry about vogue game the players are the game. And they now have greater options to move than they ever had before in the old days. Mitch you were stock and by the way, I don't think Trevor Lawrence you'd have to spend three years at Clemson. If he doesn't want to I think Trevor Lawrence wanted to come out this year, he ought to come out this year because guess what the game which survived that to look this phenomenon is not. Now, I understand what wh- what Mississippi, but, you know, this this also all this discussion, you know, puts the rest any any naievety. Did anyone should have about what the nature of this whole enterprise is not once that we mentioned that a kid might like to go to school because of the academic circumstance and one around just because the schools better than the school that he's the other school Xs a better school than school. Why in this is a better life path for him? No, it's all at that level. There are kids that are doing that. But not meant that that level. These kids are all trying to get to the next the next level. And this is their path to do it. And it's it's not gonna you know, it's not it's not going to change. It's just not. All right. We're going to we're going to sit on different sides of of that. "But now feels is gone. He's gone Ojo state one more thing on fields. When it got fields Trevor Lawrence. I don't I don't remember the timetable. Trevor Lawrence may have may have already committed but Trevor Lawrence coming from that state. So we ended up with fields Trevor Lawrence grows to Clemson. And the difference of those two outcomes. Oh, Paul can you can you imagine right. Absolutely. Would have been different, and you know, related to all this go back to the last year's off season. Let's not also forget the judgments that were made by some of the D lineman from Clemson who could have gone to be NFL, right? And right. Jalen hurts said, you know, what we we want to go back. We want to go back and play if all those guys had gone to the NFL we have a very different outcome. And so we can't just look at what happened Monday night in isolation. You gotta trace back and look at a series of events that ladder these contributed to that outcome. And you know, a lot of people made some really good moves. But of course, a lot of people didn't. Couple of those Alabama guys that went out they'd they'd been in the defensive backfield on Monday night, we might have had a different outcome as well. Can you imagine it makeup Fitz? Patrick was running the Alabama backfield Monday, you think Trevor LARs would have all the freedom that he had. No, you wouldn't have been a disaster. But is different. Yeah. And that's that's college football. This isn't the NFL decides someone into internal. That's exactly I don't criticize any of those players, by the way. I want them to make the decision that's for them. But you have to remember that a lot of what we see on the field near the end of the season. Started many many months people with decisions made by players, and coaches, I wanna go back maybe generically because there's no way to know what someone goes through when they self evaluate. But the you've been a CEO in an executive, and you know, and you've studied this when someone whether's Brian Kelly or or Nick Saban or or anyone for that matter comes off of disappointment. A major setback. What's the process like? First of all Paul really starts. How that person's wire around the side there, many many people, in fact, I would argue the vast majority of simply incapable really looking in the mirror and being honest with ourselves. And if you can't be honest with yourself, and you can't improve it's like the alcoholic. We've got a case in beard for him. But he keeps telling me that he's not an alcohol. All right. Why can't help that person? Neither can anybody else. But most of these guys have not gotten to where they are as coaches without that sort of painful, look, that's number one painful thing number two. Is you got coaches in particular that have been with you this year or maybe for many years, and the reality may be that they're not cutting it anymore at the level. You need them to cut it out. And you gotta make hard decisions on them. You know, obviously affects them it affects their families etcetera etcetera. And and sometimes it's harder to make the tough call on another person than it is. Is to make the tough call on yourself. Remember last year, Paul what was it ever the national championship victory? I think saving turned over about half his staff that after after a win after a win. And so he's demonstrated that I get into you this about dabbled Swinney. I don't care how much of the sheriff. Andy Taylor accent. Clemson would dabble what he did with Trevor Lawrence Kelly. Bryant was a hard nose..

"You know what I mean? Right. Strong's Denzil in their man. That's cool. But my heart was war from all the way over here. If I if I had to go to seeing it into theater, Mahar woulda guy. So Dan warm out of blew up. So I just chose not to do it. Right. I never got around to watching it. So I finally saw with sunshine looked like on the Twitter, and you have to understand the is a bit of a to American sort of thing, you say sunshine. I think about some else. Anyway, I look at sunshine. Look nothing like Trevor Lawrence. Did they play similarly or something like wash moving but such onto quarterback? He was a QB. Okay. Did he play 'cause 'cause driven Laura's somebody sent a picture of Roger waters? Why does the Pink Floyd? And I'm like, oh, yeah. Okay. There is Trevor laws. My man sent me a text this morning and said he thought Trevor laws look life, ready teddy teddy Perkins off. Lanta? It's not wrong. It's not wrong. I k- believe as somebody who was consistently told. He looks like all kinds of people. Don't look like may. I was out here having Trevor laws look like air, white, dude and world. I can't imagine how frustrated is beat Trevor Lawrence Tom about it. I looked like he'd better. Hope. None of these cats never committed. No crimes. They come get Trevor Lawrence. I if you look like anybody there was one comparison that that was pretty spot on. And if you see the movie dazed and confused, yes is a little guy in there. Mitch Kramer, eight Mitch Kramer. I think that one is. But it's also it's your point too. It's like, it's kinda just the hair thing. Yeah. Well, also think like when you started getting today's diffuse and stuff Trevor laws is is don't open that for. He's more of the Matthew, mcconaughey them. Yeah. Yeah. So I think that people like put him in places, you know, what I mean, they they take him to places and then they draw their own conclusions about who. And what he is. But he. He is cold. They made the decision to move off from Kelly. Brian. I don't think it was especially courageous to be honest because I don't think that even if they lost the game. Trevor Lawrence out of the backlash was really going to be severe. I think everybody understood what the deal was in that situation, but you still removing on from your senior quarterback to a true freshman. True. Freshman is a true freshman is true..

"Six in survive, clemson's doing something that few teams a few coaches would ever even tried to do which is a two headed quarterback while you're trying to win a national championship. But it's working enough Kelly Brian Trevor Lawrence, I think what Davos doing here is giving Trevor Lawrence Cimarron because if they need downfield passing stretching the defense, something they did not have the college football playoff last year. He wants to have that ammunition at the ready with a young Trevor Lawrence, Clemson, though under dabble has done an amazing thing. They've completely rewritten their reputation. This is always the game that Clemson stubbed toe. Big game at night on the road against a good fo top plays. This is where Clemson got the Clinton sitting tag. And instead now a complete opposite. You go into last night ego Clinton's gonna win this game. And in it, of course, they did. And the sales are still set for college football playoff at a potential run into national championship game. Look at Clemson schedule. They might not play a rank team all season. After Texas ATM, they've got Georgia Southern Georgia Tech. Syracuse wait NC state, Florida state, Louisville BC Duke and finally the rivalry game against South Carolina. The ACC is so down this year. I think they needed a game. Like that last night to show that they're a player on a national level is just beating up the sisters of the poor. Even.
