It came out in September. It's changed from the original formulation of the COVID shot and that it covers the omicron variants that are circulating in the community. So it is recommended to get that updated booster to be up to date and to protect folks from getting severely ill from the COVID strains that are circulating right now. One of the things that we've seen some evidence of is shortage of some medications. I mean, internationally, antibiotics as I understand it are short. We also have some flu medications that are short. And maybe even some over the counter. Correct. So we have been hearing reports of local areas that have shortages of Tamiflu, which is the antiviral medication that is used to treat influenza. However, there's not nationally a shortage. What we do recommend for physicians and practitioners is to use those antiviral medications and reserve them for individuals who are at severe at risk for severe disease from influenza. So those that have other medical conditions, lung conditions for conditions, we also give Tamiflu to everyone that's hospitalized with influenza as well. You can get on and find an old Corvette for 10,000 bucks. You can look for old Broncos, you can look for old BMW wagons, which actually are kind of going up in value. You could there's something for everyone again, and I think that's why it's so popular. Even if you're not actively fitting, you kind of think you could because not everything is that expensive. And it's really fun to get on and just live vicariously through whatever auction you're following at the moment. Like I said, with something that is really accessible, easy, you get instant gratification and it has forced the other auction houses like RM Sotheby's bottoms to come up with their own ways of selling cars online. He really showed this is a lucrative endeavor and it's forced the other guys to kind of hurry up and follow suit. All right, wrap and around. Yes or no. How do you buy a car this year? More on that from Bloomberg's Charlie pellet. Denise drought and war cut production and eroded inventories keeping global food inflation simmering. The Bloomberg agriculture spot index, which tracks 9 of the world's top selling corn products, was up about 6 and a half percent, the fourth straight yearly increase. In the newsroom, I'm Denise Pellegrini. This is Bloomberg. Bloomberg radio on demand and in your podcast feed. On the latest edition of the tape podcast, a conversation with Ethan debit, chief investment officer at monetta. Ethan, talk to us about earnings risk that is certainly a risk that a lot of people are calling out as it relates to the 2023 outlook. How do you think about that? How do you quantify it? And how much is it kind of in your calculus? Once you get back to that telegraphing point I made earlier, what we saw very much in 2022 was actually earnings surprise on the upside because they'd been worked down so much in terms of expectations. So when a company gets the bad news out of the way, the expectations are low, when you're on the floor, it's not easy to surprise on the upside. And we still saw 75 to 80% of companies beat expectations. So the key is for expectations get set. So I actually am not that pessimistic about earnings, the prizes on the negative side coming in 2023, simply because companies know how to play this game now. There certainly will be a threat to margins though. Even talk to us about energy. We've been talking about commodities a lot today and energy has been such a great story for 2022, one of the few areas where investors equity investors can make real money this year. Is that trade kind of played out or do you think there's more room to go there? There will be a little bit of room to go. We're still seeing quite a bit of rhetoric around the energy complex and this energy terrorism. We're seeing some statements coming out of Russia. It does seem, though, however, that Europe is getting its supply in shape at least for this winter for sure and equally for next winter. We're hearing about stocks increasing and just finding alternative sources. We have this energy trilemma and a new security energy pricing energy sustainability that all policymakers are juggling right now. It has seen that the sustainability piece has been on the back burner this year as we've been focused on pricing and security. But however, the sustainability piece is going to continue to come to the fore. So I'm very optimistic about

A country moving to limit Chinese travelers that don't have an impact on the economy there. The U.S. will start requiring negative COVID tests for travelers from China starting this Thursday. And Bloomberg's Jordan Fabian says the prospects of waves of people with COVID coming to the U.S. has health officials here skittish because what they're actually really worried about is the possibility that new variants are being created in China because of the level of infections and the possibility that that variant will be spread overseas including to the U.S.. So that's why they're imposing this testing requirement for travelers from China. And Fabian also says U.S. health officials are worried about a lack of reliable COVID data from Beijing. A lot of key economic data coming out this coming week in the U.S., especially for those trying to second guess on inflation. And the fed, we get more data from Bloomberg's Tracy junkie. Tomorrow, it's a report on construction spending. Economists we surveyed say that probably fell even more in November than in the previous month. Wednesday, the institute for supply management's manufacturing gauge for December is also expected to show more slippage. We'll also get the minutes from the last fed meeting that could give more hints about the size of the expected spread rate hike in early February. Then Friday we'll get the jobs report. It's expected to show a slowdown in the pace of hiring in December and an unemployment rate holding steady at 3.7%. In Washington, tracie jockey, Bloomberg radio. Thank you, Tracy. And consumers and retail, also in focus. Dana Telsey, chief research officer at Tulsi advisory group, says when it comes to consumers and retailers just about anything can happen. I think the positive surprise would be a consumer that's stronger than expected where you have look at the jobless rate and you have people going to work again. The labor costs are running higher so they can invest in discretionary goods, not just experiences. The negative part of it is you look at the retailers who are still going to have over inventory and are we going to have margin pressure in the first half of the year. It's up in the air right now. And of course all that consumer spending tells he's talking about can end up being inflationary. Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake, powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than a 120 countries. In the newsroom on Denise Pellegrini, this is Bloomberg. Bloomberg radio on demand and in your podcast deed. On the latest edition of the Bloomberg businessweek podcast, a conversation with morning consult economist Caleb Brown about the strength of the U.S. consumer headed into 2023. My big concern is that consumer budgets are just starting off 2023 in a much weaker position than they did in 2022. We've seen in our surveys that we collect from among consumers that it's been rising all year, the share who are saying that their monthly expenses, total more than their incomes. So they've been working away at their savings debt levels have been increasing and getting more expensive with interest rates. So all of those factors, I think are making the consumer a bit weaker. What's been surprising is how resilient spending has been so far, but the question now is kind of our income is going to close the gap enough with inflation to kind of allow them to keep spending or we're seeing more price sensitivity, the holidays were a big toll on many. So are they going to be able to sustain positive growth in 2023? Well, I'm curious, Kayla, when you look at the data that we've gotten so far, have any of those ratios given you concerned because when you point those out to certain people and you say, this could be bad. They say, well, you have to compare it to the financial crisis and other sort of recessionary periods that we went through. And they say, well, is that bad when you stack it up against that? What worries me is that, you know, you think about what do consumers use to spend, they have incomes, they have savings, they have debt. And where we are now is they worked their way through the savings through their savings to a larger degree than they did at the start of last year. Incomes are still not keeping up with prices. If that changes, that could help, but for now purchasing power is going down. And then debt levels is that final piece, which has not been a big concern in 2022. Get more of
